Publisher’s Notes Fall Fashions and Passions. We had so much fun shooting at the stunning, Carrollwood home of Jim and Lori Gibson. Photographer Ryan Gautier, along with a hard working team, rose to the occasion and you can see the results on page 52. Thanks to our clothing partners - Neiman Marcus Tampa Bay and numerous boutiques — Deborah Kent’s, Georgette’s, JC’s Boutique, Clothes Friends, Paradise Island, Love That! and Tresca Italia. This year’s charity feature profiles four people who are following their passion and making a difference in the community. Our charity events guide is available online at tampabaymetro.com. In this issue, we also focus on Women’s Health. As we know, women are caretakers and seldom put themselves first. Mary Lou Janson talks to a few local experts and has suggestions for women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. We also had some fun nights on the town. METRO was a proud sponsor of CITY for the Tampa Museum of Art, and CONCEPTBAIT’s ten year anniversary celebration. We have a photo essay of both events in this issue. With the slightly cooler temperatures, area fresh markets have started this month. Located throughout the community, plan to support the local vendors and get the freshest produce, along with unique arts and craft items. Finally, don’t miss the Junior League of Tampa’s Holiday Gift Market to be held Nov. 9, 10, 11 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. There will be more than 140 specialty merchants offering unique and trendy items with 100 percent of the proceeds supporting the work of the JLT and their mission to improve the lives of children and families in the Tampa Bay Community.

Glamour & Grandeur Pavilion XXVII By Nancy Seijas-Kipnis

Grandeur returns to the Tampa Museum of Art on Nov. 3 as the Museum unveils its signature fall fundraiser, Pavilion. Regarded by two generations as a hallmark in Tampa’s cultural and philanthropic calendar, Pavilion celebrates the 27 year old tradition that its founders envisioned: a spectacular night of fashion, food and entertainment amidst the beauties of the Museum. All proceeds benefit the Museum’s education and exhibition programs. The Museum has relied on the leadership of a fearless chairperson, a strong committee and an amazing cohort of volunteers to produce a unique and trendy soiree. “Pavilion is about creating something innovative and modern that keeps with tradition, but offers an element of surprise that engages and delights guests and Museum lovers,” says Pavilion XXVII Chair, Carrie Brown. What to expect from this chameleon in November? Details are still under wraps, but think glam dusted with James Bond, a dash of Mad Men and a hint of Truman Capote, all in black and white. Guests can expect to revel in five-star atmosphere, high fashion and glamour, dinner by Mise en Place, either in your own lounge or at a seated table, live entertainment by 18-piece modern big jazz band, The Helios Jazz Orchestra, late night dancing with a DJ, and the Museum’s current exhibition The Man, the Image & the World. The Power of Color Terry Blachek – Founder and Partner Orangetheory Fitness By Brooke Palmer

“Launching in Tampa Bay over the last two years has been nothing short of incredible. The workout does just that — it works!” —Terry Blachek

10

October/November 2012

www.TampaBayMetro.com

When Terry Blachek was looking for his next venture in the fitness world, color him surprised when he landed with Orangetheory Fitness. With over 25 years of marketing and operation of large scale heath clubs, including Crunch Fitness and Lifestyle Family Fitness, a boutique concept was the something different Blachek was looking for. “In Orangetheory, I found that.” Partnering up with the team that launched the franchise concept for Massage Envy, the Orangetheory Brand was born. “It was a natural progression to start the concept in Florida,” Blachek said. Orangetheory Fitness is a one-of-a kind fitness experience that combines two concepts: heart rate based-training and group personal training. The one-hour, ever changing workout was formulated by an exercise physiologist, Ellen Latham, and consists of diverse components including high-energy cardiovascular and strength training using treadmills, rowing machines, suspension training and free weights with short bursts of intense exercise. “It is exciting what we have planned for Tampa Bay and beyond,” said Blachek. “With almost 50 new spots on the horizon, the country is about to see a whole lot of orange.” For more information, visit www.OrangetheoryFitness.com.

The Bounty Outdoors By Ronda M. Parag

Cooler temperatures and lower humidity bring lots of outdoor activities to the Tampa Bay area. Now through May, it’s time to enjoy many of the area’s outdoor markets and festivals. All are focused on providing the freshest produce, local artisans and crafters, food vendors and music. “The Tampa Downtown Market is designed to bring fresh, local goods not regularly available to our downtown constituents and visitors,” says Angela Ruth, Director of Marketplace Development at the Tampa Downtown Partnership. “Our residents no longer have to get in their cars to go purchase their produce, fish, baked goods and specialty foods.” “The Tampa Downtown market is also an opportunity to foster business development for local entrepreneurs with unique products, interested in testing the downtown market,” says Ruth. “It is the beginning of an incubator process to bring in new businesses who can grow into a more permanent downtown presence.”

A variety of markets on various days are available throughout the community on Tues. at the Gulfport Fresh Market, Thurs. at the Safety Harbor Farmers Market, and numerous markets on Sat. and Sun. including the Seminole Heights Morning Market, Fresh Market at Hyde Park Village, Fresh Market at the Shops of Wiregrass, Fresh Market at Westchase Town Center. The Saturday Morning Market in downtown St. Petersburg has been going strong since 2002. Henri Cartier-Bresson at the Tampa Museum of Art By Megan Voeller

October/November 2012

Few photographers left as deep an imprint on the 20th century as Henri Cartier-Bresson. Born in France in 1908, Cartier-Bresson found himself witness to a series of seminal events in modern life: World War II (during which he was a prisoner of war in Germany), the death of Mahatma Gandhi, the rise of communism in China, and the imposition of the Iron Curtain. Through January 13, 2013, the Tampa Museum of Art celebrates Cartier-Bresson’s legacy with an exhibit of more than 300 black-and-white photographs by the famed image-maker. Titled The Man, the Image & the World. Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective, the exhibit makes its first U.S. stop at TMA after visits to Berlin, Zurich, Brisbane and Seoul. Selected by Cartier-Bresson before his death in 2004, the images represent the most important of his works, displayed as prints that the photographer himself approved.

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Cartier-Bresson got his start as a photographer inspired by art world movements including Surrealism before landing work as a photojournalist. In 1947, he founded Magnum Photos, the photographic agency, with fellow photographers George Rodger, David Seymour and Robert Capa. Together, they championed the creative projects of individual photojournalists and broke away from the conventions of magazine photojournalism. For Cartier-Bresson, that meant a devotion to seeking out the human moments in everyday life as well as historical events, and locating a “decisive moment” within a composition remarkable for its geometry and visual interest. The Man, the Image & the World: Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective runs through Jan. 13, 2013, at the Tampa Museum of Art, 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. Junior League Tampa’s Holiday Gift Market Fun Shopping Makes Big Local Impact The growing “shop local” movement has many in Tampa Bay seeking out local merchants to spend their dollars on helping Tampa businesses in the path to recovery. On November 9-11, shoppers will be able to make their dollars go even further in the community at The Junior League of Tampa’s 9th annual Holiday Gift Market held at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Money spent at the Gift Market makes a local impact in multiple ways, says JLT President Stephanie Wiendl. “Not only are nearly 90% of our merchants from Florida, but the money the League raises from admission goes directly back into projects and programs helping disadvantaged children and families in the Tampa Bay area,” says Wiendl. “So this fun and festive shopping weekend contributes both to local businesses’ bottom line and to the welfare of those most in need in our community.”

Legal Tips

Whether A Personal Injury Case or Divorce: Health Insurance Matters In instances of personal injury or divorce, the question of health insurance requires understanding your legal rights and careful planning. Someone else’s negligence causes you injury. Per Florida law your automobile insurance will pay the first $10,000 of your treatment costs. After that, you have the right to pursue your claim against the person who caused your injuries. If you have health insurance, you may submit your medical bills to your health insurer. Most health insurers maintain a contractual right to be reimbursed for costs they cover that are caused by the negligence of another person. Therefore, the health insurer will advance the money to pay your bills, but will expect to be reimbursed if or when you recover from the negligent person. It is important that your attorney considers the health insurer’s right to be reimbursed as part of the damages in

SPECIAL SECTION

your personal injury claim. Additionally, health insurance may also be a major issue to consider when you are getting divorced. If you are covered by your spouse’s health insurance plan, then you may need to explore what is called “COBRA” or you may need to find yourself a new individual health insurance plan. If you are receiving alimony, then your health insurance may be part of your “need,” and your spouse may be required to pay for this expense. In almost every case, when a divorce becomes final, one spouse’s employer’s health insurance coverage will no longer provide for the other former spouse. In this world of every increasing healthcare costs, these are serious considerations in analyzing a possible settlements and in preparing for litigation related to alimony. Not only must alimony be calculated to cover any health insurance

expense, but also the tax consequences of that alimony must be factored into the equation to make sure that there is enough money to actually pay for the health insurance premium after taxes are paid on the alimony. If there are any questions you have related to the topics raised here, or as to any issues related to Personal Injury or Family Law in general, please call us. We are always available.

Is it Fall already?

Can you believe that we are already at Turkey time? As the summer wrapped up, there was no shortage of star sightings with a little event in town. Maybe you heard about the Republican National Convention? B Scene was lucky enough to get in to a few exclusive events including Liberty Plaza, The Warehouse, The Republican Governors welcome event, as well as being tasked with the Huffington Post Oasis and a few private events, all wrapped into one LONG week. But there was a whole lot of charity going on too, these past few months. Lightning Captain Vinny Lecavalier didn’t let the lockout keep him from holding his annual Texas Hold ‘em Tourney. Hyde Park favorite gastro pub Irish 31 added to their star power with a Summerfest that capped off the summer nicely, and The Lions Eye Foundation scored big at their annual Eye Ball, breaking records in money raised and attendance. When Dick Vitale agrees to host your event, you already know it is AWESOME BABY! But this year, Vinny and his friends set a new standard for giving at the 6th Annual Vincent Lecavalier Foundation Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament. Vincent Lecavalier, Marty St. Louis, Teddy Purcell, Steven Stamkos, Ryan Malone, and others from the Rowdies, Bucs, and Rays, went all in for a big night for the foundation. What really made the evening special, was Dickie V’s speech. Rousing the crowd, in TEN minutes he raised nearly $130,000. A truly magical moment for the foundation, and all the children at the Pediatric Blood Disorders and Cancer Center at All Children’s Hospital. The Voice’s Juliet Simms, Platinum recording artist Edwin McCain, and American Idol David Cook, all came together to headline the first annual Irish 31 Summerfest. Hosted by Jay and Bianca Mize, Irish 31, and Mize entertainment, the day featured 7 bands to benefit the ALS Foundation. More than 1,000 people came out to share in the fun, including Kat Lanford, Jane McKee, Domingo Quintero, and Carlos Padilla. Chef Mike Swords and General Manager John Tatone spearheaded the delicious fare from Irish 31, capping off a great day. Plans for a Super Bowl Party are in the works so stay tuned to irish31.com. Lastly, for the 6th year in a row, the Lions Eye Institute Foundation has been raising funds to give the gift of sight. Kelley Sims, Executive Director and Jason Woody, President and CEO, strive to bring awareness to the Tampa Bay community that the largest eye bank in the world is at our doorstep. More than 350 people turned out for an exotic themed evening at TPepin’s Hospitality Center. The foundation welcomed Mrs. World, April Lifriu as their keynote, as well as many important donors including Lisa Butler, event Chair June Suermann, Scott Fink, Lorna Taylor, and Michael O’Rourke. CONCEPTBAIT Global Events + Floral Design Group’s Anniversary Bash When: September 13, 2012 Where: Postcard Inn, St. Pete Beach The unlikely pair of Frank Clemente and Lynn McGhee met in Miami. One was designing interiors for some of Miami’s finest, the other, was designing costumes for some of Miami’s most outrageous. But their lives merged and brought the two best friends to St. Petersburg, where they were forced to reinvent their talents. CONCEPTBAIT was born. After being primarily a spandex linen rental and design firm for events, they saw their clients needing other services. “It was a very organic progression for us,” said Clemente. “Clients we served were asking us to expand our creativity to other areas of events including production, floral, event design, and creation of everything from a bar mitzvah to a ball.” CONCEPTBAIT recently celebrated their 10th birthday with a huge party at the Postcard Inn on the Beach with an explosion of color. “All of our staff and event partners are amazing,” said McGhee. “We are back to creating outlandish, attention grabbing design,” adds Clemente. More than 400 of their friends, colleagues and clients were “lured” in to revel in celebration. METROHome Tour

In Harmony With Nature And Florida Heritage Thompson Family’s Moderrn Shell Point Oasis

By Mary Lou Janson Photography by Raif Fluker Old growth oak trees majestically covered the grounds of the site Shannon and Jack Thompson first visited more than two decades ago. Architect Walt Chancey of Chancey Design Partnership introduced the couple to the undeveloped Bayshore Boulevard lot located in a highly desirable neighborhood, knowing they were looking for a place to build a home and raise a family. It proved to be the ideal location for the Thompsons. They could easily envision children gleefully playing in a large yard, friends joining the couple for casual dinners and parties as well as afternoons spent enjoying the waterfront before docking their boat at the nearby Tampa Yacht Club. “We were living in a townhouse in Hyde Park but needed a larger space so decided to build,” Shannon Thompson recalled. “That’s when we found this South Tampa acreage with 2,500-yearold oaks.” After acquiring the Shell Point plot, the couple called on Chancey to create a single family residence featuring characteristics reminiscent of Florida’s history and heritage, but fully outfitted for a contemporary lifestyle. The resulting design was named “Home of the Year” in 1991 by Florida Home and Garden, and successfully combined the amenities of a luxury resort with the location’s naturally beautiful surroundings. “It looks like a Florida Cracker

36

October/November 2012

house that has been there a long time. It has an authentic look and feel,” Thompson said. “There really is a lot of character in this house because of the hardwood floors, tin roof and wrap-around porch.” Elegance and ease co-exist comfortably here. The exterior was initially painted red, giving it an appearance similar to a farmhouse. Now the all-white structure exudes a cool, inviting demeanor. The interior boasts a free-flowing, open and airy design accented by 14-foot high ceilings, lots of windows and multiple sets of French doors overlooking the fully enclosed pool and deck. The three-story, 6,100-square-foot home occupies less than an acre that it shares with a stand-alone guest house, heated, in-ground swimming pool, two-car garage, lots of yard space encompassing a courtyard and badminton set, plus a 400-foot driveway. One of the home’s most surprising and endearing touches is the “tree house” tower that solely occupies the third floor. Within these walls is a private massage room that overlooks the treetops, creating a supreme sense of solitude and sanctuary. “I really thought that it was an extraordinary location. With the oak trees, it was like entering a grand plantation,” said Chancey. “You immediately felt like you had left suburbia and had gone to the country.” In addition to his architectural expertise, Chancey’s wife

and business partner, Sandra, has contributed to the home’s interior design throughout the years. From the front porch, visitors immediately enter a formal foyer that opens into a luxurious, gourmet kitchen outfitted with high-end appliances including a six-burner range and sub-zero refrigerator, a walk-in pantry sporting a chalk wall for making shopping lists, breakfast bar and food prepping island. Sharing the first floor is a family room/great room that includes a fireplace and opens into the kitchen from one end while extending to the porch adjoining the resort-style pool on the opposite end. The ground floor also includes a media room and a spacious master bedroom suite, featuring his-and-her master bathrooms plus abundant closet space. A stairwell leads to four more bedrooms and bathrooms and a large laundry room on the second floor. The guest house, which was later added, has served as a fitness room, an activity room for the children and a place for overnight visitors to stay.

Now that the Thompson children are grown, Taylar is 22, and Chandler, 19, the time has come for the parents to leave the only home they have known for 22 years and enjoy a simpler lifestyle that may include a home with a private dock. And those original oak trees? Still standing and providing a lush, lovely overhead canopy as friends, family and guests drive on to the property. M

Autumn Décor By Ronda M. Parag A change of season serves as an inspiration to host a memorable Thanksgiving dinner by setting a beautiful table. Warm and rich hues serve as color accents while layering of plates in all shapes, colors and sizes adds visual interest and depth. Create warm and fascinating centerpieces by bringing the outdoors in. Using colorful autumn leaves will brighten each place setting. The popular trend of being green instills a philosophy to reuse, repurpose and recycle. “I get most my inspirations from things organic,” says Traci Wadsworth, who created the tablescape on the right. “Whenever I’m decorating there’s always something I use from my yard, the beach or from a trip we’ve taken. For this Thanksgiving table, I used sticks from the yard to create “pumpkin tree” name cards, cut up cardboard boxes for the menus and packing twine for napkin rings.” The variety, size and color of pumpkins or gourds are a natural addition to incorporate. Top the table with a burlap covering and by mixing china, stemware, silver and candles on a wooden, distressed dining table will add plenty of rustic, fall charm.

Personal Passions The People Behind Bay Area Charities

While the charitable needs of the Tampa Bay area are many, METRO found three organizations and the passionate people striving to make a difference. Meet power couple, Tim and Elaine Sweeney, who founded a charity to help drug addicted professionals, Vicky Westra who created Art for Autism and developed Artistas CafĂŠ, and Debbi McCarthy, who as development director for Feeding America Tampa Bay, helps with a basic human need of satisfying hunger.

Turning Lives Around, One Person at a Time Tim and Elaine Sweeney, Founders HealthCare Connection Foundation

A new foundation started by Elaine and Tim Sweeney to raise funds to help save the lives of addicted and struggling professionals and get them back to work, is the core mission at HeathCare Connection Foundation (HCCF). “Most people give freely for children's issues or diseases like cancer, but when it comes to addicts, people don't understand that it is a disease too and not a choice,” says Tim Sweeney. “After working in the treatment field for over fifteen years, I have learned that a truly needy and tragic group of our population suffering from drug and alcohol problems, are indigent professional persons, those most highly trained and capable, but, because of their addiction, face losing everything, their careers, their families, their lives,” said Tim Sweeney. For the past two years, the Sweeneys have been actively raising funds to treat these “professionals” at HealthCare Connection. The candidates must fit very strict requirements and there is no shortage of seekers. The Foundation is currently treating its fourth patient. HCCF’s first patient, Nelson C., an attorney, was destitute and living in his old pickup truck. He reached out for help and the Sweeneys responded. “HCCF saved my life, helped reunite me with my children, and gave me hope for a better future,” says Nelson C. “It costs almost $30,000 to treat each person and to provide the counseling, medication management, intensive therapy, food and housing to help turn around a life in crisis and propel them toward recovery,” said Elaine Sweeney. Over time they hope to treat up to five patients a month, and believe that increasing awareness will certainly lead to others joining this noteworthy cause. www.hccfi.org

Keeping the Pantry Stocked Debbi McCarthy, Director of Development Feeding America Tampa Bay

Debbi McCarthy tends to shy away from the spotlight. Her humbleness beguiles her many career and personal accomplishments. But McCarthy is no stranger to Tampa Bay. For years, she worked as the community relations director of the Tampa Tribune. From there, it was on to Clear Channel Radio, where she was the director of special projects. But McCarthy's current position is her most rewarding. As director of development for Feeding America Tampa Bay, her job is to ensure that the agency can keep shelves stocked at food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens in West Central Florida, as well as rally support for its popular Kids'Café program. It's a daunting task when you consider that more than 400,000 people in West Central Florida are“food insecure”and unsure of their next meal.“The deep need for food in our community is almost a weight on your shoulders,” says McCarthy. “But being able to reach hundreds of thousands of people is enormously rewarding.” When she’s not in the office, you’ll find McCarthy in the kitchen cooking, working on her first novel, or writing country music lyrics she dreams of hearing on the radio one day. McCarthy is also busy planning a labor of love: Feeding America Tampa Bay’s annual Empty Bowls on Nov. 15 at Lykes Park in downtown Tampa from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. For a $10 donation, guests will receive a lunch of soup, bread, fruit and water; as well as a hand-made ceramic bowl created by local school children. Proceeds will ensure that as many families as possible will have food on the table this holiday season. For more information, go to www.FeedingAmericaTampaBay.com.

Making a Difference One Cup at at Time Vicky Westra, Coffee Diva, Founder Art for Autism and Artistas Café

When Vicky Westra and her husband, Pier, received the diagnosis that their child, Gabrielle (Gabby), was autistic they went through the normal range of emotions — anger, fear, despair. After leaving a job in corporate America, Westra felt she had a calling to do something else, “something bigger than me” she says. She started a coffee company and with part of the profits, funds the nonprofit, Art for Autism and Artistas Café. Facing 90 percent unemployment, Westra developed an innovative program for young adults with autism. Nearly two years ago, Westra began a partnership with Mercedes-Benz of Tampa and the Artistas Café was born. Serving up jobs for people with autism—Artistas Café is a first-of-its-kind café that provides job skills training, internships and employment opportunities. Through extensive coaching and role-playing, the training program teaches the skills necessary to secure meaningful employment—both within and outside of the organization. “With the right things in place, people with autism make excellent employees,” Westra says. “We build self-confidence by teaching communication and multi-tasking skills, as well as the ability to read and interpret social cues.” Through the concept of social enterprise, Westra strives that each café will be profitable to pay the team members and be self-sustaining. Other projects Westra is launching involve Art in the Community, and in January, Westra plans to begin a culinary program with three local chefs to continue her mission of creating diversity and acceptance. www.artistascafe.com

egin by looking within. Self-awareness and setting goals for adequate sleep, managing stress levels, meeting nutritional needs, maintaining healthy hydration, always applying sun protection and participating in regular exercise, can go a long way towards maintaining a strong, healthy body, a positive mental outlook and overall well being. Also, consider new treatments and techniques offered by leading Tampa Bay medical professionals who work closely with women to address age-related health issues. Regular visits to dermatologists, obstetrics-gynecologists (OB-GYNs), and primary care physicians are important to incorporate into your lifestyle and long-tem health goals, but may not be enough. A broad-based approach addressing internal functions to mental alertness could prove more valuable for your physical, mental and emotional condition. “A comprehensive, more integrated approach will make sure your gut is working right, your thyroid, adrenal glands and hormones are in balance and can aid your body to get rid of deep-seated chemicals and toxins that are in our foods and environment,” said Dr. Lisa Koche, M.D., of South Tampa’s Spectra Wellness Solutions. “What may be expressed as only subtle symptoms in our twenties becomes increasingly severe over the decades. We don’t feel as vital and learn to live with the headaches, pains, stress, bloating, cramps, fatigue and brain fog.” “Sometimes people don’t seek help or their physician may not pick up on what is causing them to feel tired, feel pain or be depressed. It can be a process,” Koche added. “It may be a matter of you having to feel bad enough before you begin. Then it’s like an onion. We start peeling away the different layers to get to optimal health.” The thirties are a critical time for women who want to have children, but postpone that decision for too long and eventually pass their peak fertility point. “The ability to freeze eggs is a relatively new and exciting technology. Ten years ago the technique was less advanced and there was only limited ability for the egg to successfully survive the thaw,” said Dr. Sandy Goodman, a board certified Reproductive Endocrine/Fertility specialist with Tampa Bay’s The Reproductive Medicine Group.

“There have been significant improvements in the success rates of thawing, fertilizing and creating the embryo. These exciting breakthroughs make this a realistic option for women who want to preserve their fertility.” Harvesting eggs while still 30-something will generally yield more eggs and increase chances for conception than if the woman delays having it done until her 40s, Goodman explained. “One egg may not be reliable so you need to have a reasonable number of eggs available. A woman in her thirties is at a key time in terms of her fertility. You don’t want to lose that window,” Goodman added. “Freezing eggs is also a viable option for women who may have certain disorders that cause fertility to decline more rapidly, such as auto-immune disorders or endometriosis.” The thirties is also a pivotal period for skin. Women need sun protection at any age, but there is encouraging news regarding ways to better protect the skin, and even un-do some long-term effects of sun exposure that can lead to a leathery look or cause premature aging. New federal guidelines now make it easier to identify broad spectrum sunscreens that “reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging as well as prevent sunburn,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “The risk of skin cancer is on the rise. We are seeing more of it every year and the latency period takes years,” said Dr. James Spencer, MD, of Spencer Dermatology Skin & Surgery Center in St. Petersburg. For mothers in their 30s, that means making sure their children are also getting the protection they need now. Once skin shows signs of wrinkling, roughness and discolorations like red blotches or brown spots, you can try covering up with make-up, or you can consider a new laser technique that uses precise micro-beams to resurface and regenerate skin. The procedure, fractionated resurfacing, should be done by a medical professional trained in this technique, Spencer urged. The minimally invasive technology selectively treats the skin while leaving parts untouched. That enables faster recovery times that typically may take four to five days. And

because the areas treated are replaced by new skin cells, the results are not just cosmetically appealing. The dead skin removed may include cancer cells and the results can last for years. Another new development that is proving promising is Celfix DNA, a cream applied to sun-damaged areas that helps the body restore and repair the skin. Early in adulthood, women focus primarily on taking care of everyone else in the family, and often barely manage preventative measures such as annual pelvic exams and birth control. “In their late 30s, 40s, and early 50s, women reach a new paradigm — the wisdom of taking care of themselves, too,” says Dr. Jennifer Hayes. Hayes, the first board-certified gynecologist to introduce Cosmetic Gynecology to the Tampa Bay area, offers minimally invasive procedures that cause little discomfort and heal quickly. That includes a range of procedures such as robotic operations for hysterectomies, prolapse and fibroid removal. The midlife issues of heavy periods and incontinence can easily be helped. Likewise, vaginal relaxation and the visual changes that come with it can affect our quality of life. We often feel older than we are. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation turns back the clock. This and other Cosmetic Gynecology procedures address the youthful sexuality some women desire, according to Hayes.

“As we age and come into our own, we want to take care of ourselves,” Hayes said. “Thankfully we live in a time when a minimally invasive approach is available for most procedures, which means less down time in our very busy lives. This can help boost our self-esteem and really create a healthy, comfortable and vibrant approach to life.” Managing weight, or attacking fat that has stubbornly settled into one area and just won’t budge, is a battle woman often face in their 40s or 50s. Spencer offers an alternative to surgical procedures like liposuction that fight fat by spot-freezing it so that it literally dies, dissolves and disappears while being absorbed by the body. “The ideal patient is a person who may be thin but has that roll or muffin top that just won’t go away. Cold is the answer,” says Spencer. “Fat dies in temperatures that the skin is able to survive. If you pull the problem section into a hand-piece to chill it — a technique called cool sculpting — the skin remains undamaged and the dead fat goes away.” Menopause is a major transition period for women as they advance in age, generally occurring as early as 40 or as late as 55. And that can mean mood swings, hot flashes, sleeplessness and diminished sex drive from loss of testosterone. “It is a natural occurrence for all women. We have

“Sexual intimacy is an important part of our lives and our health. We need to work on different ways to get our mojo back.”

mixed feelings because it marks the end of our fertility. It also marks a time when we know more about keeping ourselves healthy,” Goodman said. “Some transitions are easier than others but a healthy lifestyle — exercising, eating well and managing your weight — can really help.” While hormone treatments can increase risks related to breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and blood clots, Goodman acknowledges that estrogen can offer some temporary relief that could significantly help women better manage menopause. “You may need a bridge through this difficult time. But you need to discuss what is appropriate with your physician. Look at all of the individual risk factors and symptoms. In appropriate cases, hormone therapy is not completely off the table,” Goodman added. For help with intimacy issues and maintaining sexual vitality, Hayes encourages women not only to seek treatment, but to comply with the recommended procedures and follow-up with their physicians to ensure they are getting the desired results. “Conditions like vaginal dryness and loss of sensations and arousal due to testosterone levels can be undertreated and underserved,” said Hayes. “Sexual intimacy is an important part of our lives and our health. We need to work on different ways to get our mojo back. Furthermore, when

we optimize our hormonal balance, we feel more like we used to.” While no single solution addresses all of the health concerns women experience while aging, they can enjoy the years ahead by adapting their lifestyles accordingly. That may mean taking nutritional supplements, practicing meditation or deep breathing techniques, or trying holistic medical practices in addition to more traditional treatments. “A mind-body approach can help women to feel better, have more energy, enhance their auto-immune systems and decrease risks for heart disease, dementia and cancer. If they are functioning on a more balanced level, we can prevent these problems, get the body to work the way it is designed to work, and keep it that way,” Koche said. M

According to the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons, one of the most common surgical operations undertaken in the United States is a cholecystectomy, better known as gallbladder removal operation. A Great City On A Great Lake Milwaukee, Wisconsin | By Ronda M. Parag

appy days are here again with a trip to Milwaukee, the city that was the setting for the iconic TV show Happy Days. The city boasts the only “Bronz Fonz” as a tribute along its RiverWalk. As the largest city in Wisconsin, Milwaukee is a vibrant city with ethnic heritage and warm hospitality. Located on the bluff overlooking one of the bays of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee hosts numerous festivals and cultural events. Yes, there is Polish Fest, German Fest, Irish Fest and a host of others, but the signature event is Summerfest — billed as the “world’s largest music festival,” the event runs 11 days and hosts today’s top artists as well as newcomers (scheduled June 26 - 30, July 2- 7, 2013). There are plenty of adventures and exciting activities when visiting the city. For art lovers, be sure to visit the Milwaukee Art Museum. The permanent collections showcase more than 20,000 works including masters Warhol, Monet, Picasso, and O’Keefe. The museum also offers dining with a spectacular lake view. Motorcycle enthusiasts should know that Milwaukee is the world headquarters for Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

74

October/November 2012

Opened in 2008, the Harley-Davidson Museum displays 450 motorcycles and exhibitions, that tell the culture and lifestyle of the famed motorcycle. Dine at the Motor Bar & Restaurant or shop for the latest t-shirt design. Be sure to visit the spectacular Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum & Renaissance Garden overlooking Lake Michigan. Exhibits change offering a glimpse into 15th - 18th century architecture and decorative arts. With more than 160 cultural resources or properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Milwaukee is committed to historic preservation. Among the top buildings to visit are the Pabst Theater, the Iron Rock building and The Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion, home to the famed beer baron, built in 1890 at a cost of $254,614, or in today’s dollars, approximately $32.7 million. The home is the epitome of America’s Gilded Age splendor in Milwaukee. Foodies should experience the Milwaukee Food Tours and the Milwaukee Public Market. Taste your way through the old Italian, Polish and German neighborhoods to discover

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Milwaukee’s rich heritage and immigrant past on the food tour. Opened in 2005, The Milwaukee Public Market is an indoor market promoting Wisconsin food and agriculture. Taste locally-grown organic items from cheese to coffee to chocolate. During the summer months, there are lots of energetic outdoor activities including boating and urban kayaking along the Milwaukee River. A visit to the S/V Denis Sullivan educates learners of all ages to the Great Lakes, oceans and waters of the world. The S/V Denis Sullivan is the world’s only re-creation of a 19th century three-masted Great Lakes schooner and floating classroom. Stay downtown at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. The AAA Four Diamond art deco hotel built in 1927 provides superior service and comfortable accommodations in the heart of the city. Regardless of the season, a trip to Milwaukee is rich in heritage, culture, arts, food and fun. M www.visitmilwaukee.org www.travelwisconsin.com www.milwaukeecitycenter.hilton.com

METROGuide Wine orty years ago it was rare to see a female winemaker. Though there were women who were proficient and capable, they were likely to be given lab analyst positions rather than winemakers. It is still a field dominated by men, but the tides are turning, and today more and more women are making wine. There is a strong argument that women make some of the finest wines. And why not, science seems to have proven women have better palates than men as evidenced by numerous studies from universities such as Yale, Harvard and the University of California at Davis. These studies suggest women are more capable of detecting flaws in food or wine than men. One common

Eileen Crane, the winemaker for Domaine Carneros

theory is that throughout time, women have been the gatherers of nuts, vegetables and berries and responsible for sampling or smelling food items to determine if they are safe for the family, while men have been off acting as hunters. Either way, it is an exciting time for women in the field of winemaking. Here are four of the most respected, influential and talented women winemakers that any serious oenophile must put on their bucket list of wines to try. Eileen Crane is the winemaker for Domaine Carneros, the domestic property owned by the French Champagne house of Taittinger. Crane has been making sparkling wine in California for over thirty years, making her the most experienced sparkling winemaker, whether male or female, in all of America. Her style favors elegance and finesse with the use of a predominance of Chardonnay in her wines. Domaine Carneros makes a very special bottling entitled ‘Le Rêve’ or “The Dream,” a reference to Claude Taittinger’s dream to make a sparkling wine in California that could rival the finest wines in Champagne. The 2005 Domaine Carneros ‘Le Rêve’ $89.95 does just that with flavors of spiced pear, brioche, lemon meringue, chalk and hazelnuts. The wine is aged six years before its release and is an astonishing achievement exemplifying just how good California sparkling wine can be, and undoubtedly crowning Eileen Crane the queen of sparkling wines. Merry Edwards is one of the first woman winemaker’s in California, starting her career in 1974. She has had a long, successful career making benchmark wines for Mount Eden Vineyards, Matanzas Creek, Liparita, Fritz, Lambert Bridge and more. Today Edwards has her own wine label and produces many different single vineyard Pinot Noirs from vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley area of Sonoma. She did extensive clonal research on the Pinot Noir grape during her time at Mount

Eden Vineyards, and as a result has a clone named after her work entitled UCD 37, also known as the Merry Edwards selection. This clone is widely planted throughout Sonoma and is found in her 2008 Merry Edwards ‘Meredith Estate’ Pinot Noir $65.95, a wine with flavors of rhubarb, pomegranate, black cherry, black tea, cinnamon, clove and vanilla. Edwards is without a doubt the leading woman of Pinot Noir varietal. Helen Turley is famous for starting the Turley Wine Cellars label in 1993, producing mostly old vine Zinfandel wines characterized by long hang time on the vine, full ripeness, intensity and high alcohol levels. Turley Wine Cellars developed a cult following making their bottles very sought after and difficult to find. After turning the winery over to her brother Larry, she has had an impressive history making wines at some of California’s finest wineries including Peter Michael, Pahlmeyer, Colgin, Bryant Family, Marcassin and Martinelli. Helen’s influence in the wine world can be felt through the influence her protégé’s Mark Aubert, Heidi Barrett and Philipe Melka have had on the industry over the last decade, making wines at dozens of the best wineries in California and Washington State. Today, Turley has returned to her roots by acting as consulting winemaker at Martinelli Winery and producing some of California’s most collectable and cherished Zinfandels. The 2008 Martinelli ‘Vellutini Ranch’ Zinfandel $59.95 is a prime example of why fans clamor for Turley’s wines, with its ripe briary fruit flavors of boysenberry, black plum, fig and raspberry intermingled with black pepper, licorice and anise. Just 375 cases were produced making it a challenge to find. Not only is Turley the most historically important woman winemaker of

Zinfandel, it can be argued she is the most influential winemaker alive today. Celia Welch Masyczek has been making waves for over 30 years in the wine community. She made her mark producing some of California’s most legendary Cabernet Sauvignons at wineries such as Staglin, Scarecrow, Hartwell, D.R. Stephens, Bucella and many more. Her most recent venture has been at the Napa Valley’s Hollywood & Vine Cellars, a boutique label started by two entertainment moguls who’s desire to produce Napa’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon lead them to Masyczek. She has crafted an absolutely knockout wine with the stunning 2008 Hollywood & Vine ‘2480’ Cabernet Sauvignon $89.95. Rich, ripe and powerful, the wine offers a sweet cordial like character of black cherries covered with chocolate, blackberries, cinnamon, vanilla and lushness on the palate, yet still displaying enough balance and grace to be considered elegant. Before the work of Eileen Crane, Merry Edwards, Helen Turley and Celia Welch Masyczek, women did not have many opportunities in the field of winemaking. But because of their impressive output over the last thirty plus years, women are being considered, and perhaps favored over men in the roll of winemaking. Cheers to these trailblazing women and the fabulous wines they produce. M —Kevin Pelley, Certified Sommelier Wine Merchant: Bern’s Fine Wines & Spirits www.bernsfinewines.com
