Gown Guide
Passion and Grace Gown Trends | By Ronda M. Parag
As a bride walks down the aisle in her gown, the goal is to make her feel exceptional. From the luxurious fabrics and unique designs, a woman in the gown of her dreams feels beautiful and spectacular. This season, color is not just for the bridesmaids. There are lots of color options from peach to rose that are showcased on the designer runways. “For Spring 2015, I saw a continuation of the use of subtle color like blush along with the mixing of fabrics, including detachable options like tulle trains or overskirts,” said MaryIsabel Rooney, owner of Isabel O’Neil Bridal Collection in Tampa. “Compared to the last few seasons, the Spring 2015 collections feel softer and more romantic than ever before.” Ombre wedding dresses are also strutting the catwalk and are a daring way to break the rules and stand out on your special day. Many brides are choosing to take the plunge and have open, draped back detail on the gown - it is both classy and sexy with details of lace and beading. “This bridal season it is all about the low backs,” said Megan Bubalo, owner of Malindy Elene, located in Tampa. “Whether it’s lace appliqués on a sheer illusion, or just plunging down as far as the gown will go, every single girl wants to add a little sass to her wedding day look.” In order to lower the back and not compromise structure, designers are moving away from the strapless and adding straps. “This look is so stunning and such a surprise to guests, as a bride walks down the aisle,” Bubalo said. The team at The White Magnolia Bridal Collection located in Old Hyde Park Village agrees. “Our expert team of buyers at The White Magnolia are definitely seeing a comeback with straps and sleeves,” said Kerrie Hileman, owner. “Brides are looking for a little more modesty and support, so they can feel comfortable throughout the night. We are also seeing a lot of designers combining classic elements with modern twists into their new designs. We’re talking lace, tulle, and classic shapes combined with slits, sparkly boleros, and even studs for the bride searching for an edgier look,” Hileman said. “Also, staying tried and true with the past couple seasons is the romantic theme,” agrees Bubalo. “Lace, soft embroidery, soft fabrics like tulle or organza, and soft colors like champagne or blush, are being done by every single designer. We love that brides are choosing unique, soft, glamorous gowns for their wedding day!”

Two Blissful Honeymoons. One Plane Ticket. Adventures in Panama at the Riu Playa Blanca and Riu Plaza Panama | By Ronda M. Parag

Riu Playa Blanca – Waterfront Terrace Views
Panama is becoming a hot vacation spot with plenty of activities in the rain forest and other action adventure activities including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, river rafting and zip-lining. While typically tourists might think of The Panama Canal or Panama hats, an escape to Panama offers so much more. The country of Panama is located between Costa Rica and Colombia, bordered by the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, and is ideal for a romantic getaway. When a bride and groom want two different types of honeymoon, a trip to Panama with a stay at the RIU’s Playa Blanca and Plaza Panama hotels, is a match made in heaven. The newlyweds can begin their adventure with a relaxing escape to the beach and end up in the city, before heading home. The recently opened all inclusive 24-hour resort is located on the Pacific coast of Panama, in the province of Cocle. Currently, Copa Air flies direct from Tampa to Panama, with a flying time of approximately three hours. The drive to the property is about 2

hours and 15 minutes, so staying in downtown Panama at the Plaza Panama on the backside of the trip is suggested, to be closer to the airport. The 573 room hotel offers two pools and sunning decks with complimentary WiFi in the lobby. There is a buffet restaurant (Balboa) that offers tasty meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. RIU also extends its culinary offering with optional dining of an Asian, Italian and Steakhouse restaurant. Reservations are required for the select restaurants. Relax with a cocktail from the swim-up pool bar and enjoy the sun. There is no shortage of fun with the variety of activities, sports and entertainment offered. The evening offers a nightly show, live music and a night club. The on-site concierge has suggestions and will arrange off-site trips with the assistance of the Cacao Travel Group. An adventure-filled day trip should include a visit to the waterfall “Chorro Macho,” for zip-lining thrills. The adventures include multiple platforms within the forest and

passes over streams and waterfalls. After relaxing on the beach for several days, it’s time to head back to the city. Located in the heart of Panama, Riu Plaza Panama is the ideal spot for honeymooners to experience the thrill of the city, and only 25 minutes from the Panama City International Airport. The hotel offers spacious rooms, exquisite dining and RIU’s distinctive service. While the hotel is not all-inclusive, a daily breakfast is included. Be sure to visit one of the seven wonders of the modern world — the Panama Canal, opened in 1914 and celebrating its 100 year anniversary. A historic tour of the city Casco Viejo, the oldest sector of modern Panama City, was founded in 1673. Don’t miss the beautiful churches, monuments and other detailed architecture on the walking tour that takes about two hours. For RIU travel packages, visit www.vacationexpress.com. Brook Sneath and Sherwin P. Simmons II met while working for the same company and have known each other over five years. Over the course of time, the couple realized that their lives were so much more enriched by being together. The proposal happened in February 2012 for a Valentine’s Day celebration at the Loews Don CeSar Beach Resort. “We go to St. Petersburg every year for Valentine’s and the proposal was completely unexpected,” said Brook. “It was a total surprise.” The planning didn’t start immediately, the couple enjoyed being engaged for awhile. When they got serious, they enlisted the help of Stephanie Crona with Table 6 Productions. The couple wanted a formal wedding with a big party to celebrate with all their family and friends. “I knew I wanted a “winter sparkle” wedding with it falling in-between Christmas and New Years,” Brook said. “We had a lot of fun working with Stephanie and her amazing vendors in choosing the finishing touches.” The color theme of the wedding was a “mix of metallics” including gold, silver, champagne and blush. After several months of dress shopping, Brook found her dream gown at Malindy Elene located in Tampa. The bridal party had six bridesmaids and six groomsmen, along with honorary/junior groomsman, and four ushers. The couple were married by Sherwin’s brother, Stephen Leal. “We spent a lot of time putting together the ceremony in terms of the reading selections and verses that meant something to us,” Brook said. “There was also a special reading by Sherwin’s eldest son, Sherwin Palmer Simmons III, who read a special dedication at the start of the ceremony to his grandfather (the groom’s father) who is no longer with us.” The florals were beautifully created by Stephanie Prenatt of FH Weddings & Events. The bouquet included a mixture of white flowers, including roses and some orchids with blush roses incorporated throughout. Brook followed the tradition of something old and included her grandmother’s broach attached to her bouquet. “I think we both felt a little anxious about the “big day” as there is so much that goes on with preparation, getting ready and photos, but were mainly excited to have it all come together and be surrounded by people we love so much, as well as, officially become husband and wife,” Brooke recalled. The reception was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Renaissance Vinoy, with nearly 200 guests dining on cooking stations of cubans, mac & cheese, sushi, sliders and other delectable bites. The groom’s cake was pirate themed, as Sherwin has been involved with the Gasparilla parade since he was a little boy. Cake designer, Elise Garcia, created a peanut butter chocolate cake (the Groom’s favorite), with pirate figures of Sherwin, Brook, the boys and Sherwin’s father looking over the crow’s nest. The couple are fans of Pearl Jam and the first dance was to a song off the new album, “Future Days.” Brooke and Sherwin even used “SimmonsFutureDays” as their official wedding hashtag. The couple passed out glow sticks for the last bit of the reception and the dance floor was filled with a colorful glow, until Brooke and Sherwin left to Pearl Jam’s “Yellow Ledbetter,” which they end most of their concerts with. As huge Seminole fans, the couple modified their honeymoon to go to Las Vegas for a few nights, followed by a trip to Pasadena to see the National Championship game. Upon the Nole victory, the couple flew to the Caribbean for a stay at the Viceory in Anguilla, followed by five nights at Sugar Beach in St. Lucia.

Raelyz Palmero was born in Caracus, Venezuela and moved to Key West, FL in the third grade. After completing high school, she moved to Tampa to attend college at the University of South Florida, and started working for Chris Rogers’ family business — Reeves Import Motorcars. What initially began as a friendship blossomed into something special. Raelyz says, “It took some convincing, but Chris never gave up and I finally gave in. He’s such a hopeless romantic.” Chris proposed to Raelyz while on vacation with his family in Montana during the Christmas holidays. The couple had been dating about three years and Chris had asked Raelyz’s mother for her hand in marriage, while she was visiting Tampa during Thanksgiving. On the trip, Chris surprised Raelyz with a reindeer drawn sleigh ride in the snow and a proposal. “He drew me away from the other people in the group of about 10 people,” remembers Raelyz. “Before I knew it he was down on one knee, with a small box in his hand and asked me to marry him. I was in shock, and totally surprised and over the moon with happiness.” Like most girls, Raelyz envisioned her fairytale wedding many times. The couple took plenty of time to plan their dream wedding during their two year engagement. “I couldn’t have done it without my mom, mother-in-law, and amazing wedding planner Brooke Palmer of R.S.B.P. Events — they were absolutely amazing,” Raelyz said. “We were fortunate enough to work with the best vendors in the Tampa Bay area and it showed!” The happy couple arrived at the ceremony in a stunning horse and carriage held at Lange Farm. The ceremony was outside in front of a huge old oak tree just before sunset. There were crystal chandeliers hung from the branches of the tree and the seating area was decorated in a vintage theme. Raelyz decided that they would go with traditional vows, because she didn’t think she would be able to hold it together if she had to read something super mushy. “It was so amazing to walk down the aisle and see all of the close friends and family that came to share this special moment with us,” remembered Raelyz and Chris. “The sun was shinning through the trees in the most divine way, it was just perfect.” The reception included 200 people in the Garden House at the Lange Farm. One large head table and two family tables surrounded the dance floor and the guests were spread out on either side of the room. “Lauren Baldwin and her team at Puff n’ Stuff Catering delivered a fantastic plated dinner,” said Raelyz. “We served a mixed spring salad and country biscuits with crispy fried chicken, braised boneless short ribs, and au gratin potatoes as the main course. It was delicious!” The four-tier custom cake was incredibly detailed created by Elise’s Pieces. “It matched the theme of our wedding perfectly,” said Raelyz. Fun was had by everyone dancing to music by DJ Coro. To begin the reception, the happy bride danced with her brother to a special song that their friend Rolando Rojas wrote for the occasion, and Chris danced with his mother, Kim Rogers to “I Love You Aways Forever” by Donna Lewis. “He’s simply beyond caring, loyal, patient, kind, funny and I just love him and he loves me more than anything in the world,” Raelyz said. “I always have to thank him for loving me the way he does. It’s truly like out of a movie!” The couple plan to take a European honeymoon around their first anniversary.

With a total planning time of nine months, a beautiful celebration joined the lives of a doctor, Sneha and Ajay, an attorney. “Being a modern day Indian woman with strong traditional roots, I was determined to make our special day a refined blend of culture, tradition, elegance, romance and fun,” Sneha said. Traditional elements included Sneha’s mom’s choice of a Wedding Sari from Bangalore India, and white jasmine florals woven into the bride’s hair. The jasmine interwoven into Sneha’s hair is meant to give the bride luck, good fortune and prosperity in her married life.

Wedding Checklist Congratulations you’re engaged! Wedding bells will be ringing soon, but in the meantime it’s all about the planning. Here’s a helpful 12-month itinerary to make sure your big day goes off without a hitch.
10 to 12 Months This is the period of research and exploring, what kind of wedding do you want? Pretend you are a detective seeking the best of everything: style, venue, honeymoon, the works. ❑ Schedule engagement photos ❑ Mail out engagement announcements ❑ Set a date ❑ Meet clergy, especially if one of you is converting so you can start classes immediately ❑ Start making bride/groom guest list ❑ Decide on a budget ❑ Decide on indoor or outdoor wedding, be sure to keep in mind weather conditions for outdoor weddings and it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan ❑ Begin scouting locations for ceremony, reception and rehearsal dinner. ❑ Begin researching caterers, florists, photographers, musicians and bakers ❑ Make a list with fiancee of honeymoon destinations and songs for your first dance ❑ Decide on members of the wedding party ❑ Begin shopping for your wedding dress
7 to 9 Months Now it’s time to start narrowing things down. In order to have time for the details, it’s important to get some of the big stuff out of the way. ❑ Send engagement announcement to the local paper ❑ Order your wedding dress ❑ Decide on venue ❑ Choose clergy ❑ Choose your colors ❑ Take bridesmaids shopping for their dresses ❑ Take mom shopping for her Mother of the Bride dress ❑ Meet with florist and decide on flowers for venue, wedding party and reception ❑ Meet with caterer to decide on menu and schedule menu tasting ❑ Book photographer ❑ Meet with musicians to discuss play list ❑ Meet with travel agent about honeymoon ❑ Book reception venue and make deposit
4 to 6 Months Ok, take a deep breath and relax, but not too much. Look at all you’ve accomplished; now it’s time for the details. ❑ Finalize menu with caterer ❑ Finalize guest list ❑ Order wedding invitations ❑ Start shopping for wedding rings ❑ Make appointment with jeweler if want to custom design rings ❑ Meet with baker to view and taste cake options ❑ Order bridesmaids’ dresses ❑ Shop for and order fiancée and groomsmen tuxes ❑ Book honeymoon

❑ Make sure passports are current if going out of the country
2 to 3 Months Now things are beginning to take form and your dream wedding is unfolding right before your eyes. Just keep focus and have fun. ❑ Order wedding rings ❑ Confirm with florist all flowers for ceremony and reception ❑ Order cake ❑ Register for gifts ❑ Shop and order party favors ❑ Pick song for your first dance ❑ Finalize play list with musicians
4 to 8 Weeks Everything is locked in, your dress is being tailored and everything is ordered. Now is the time to CONFIRM, CONFIRM, CONFIRM. ❑ Mail wedding invitations ❑ Order programs for the ceremony ❑ Go with fiancée to get marriage license ❑ Obtain, fill-out and mail all necessary forms for your name change ❑ Pick up wedding rings and check fit ❑ Final fitting for wedding dress and wedding party ❑ Make appointment with hair and makeup stylist ❑ Make nail appointment ❑ Start shopping for honeymoon clothes ❑ Purchase wedding party gifts ❑ Purchase wedding gift for your fiancée ❑ Pick up your dress and start wearing shoes around the house to ensure comfort on the big day ❑ If traditionalist–make sure have something old, new, borrowed and blue ❑ Plan rehearsal dinner ❑ Pay final payment on reception hall
1 Week Can you hear the wedding bells? That’s right in just one week you’ll go from bride-to-be, to wife! Now just a few minor details before you walk down the aisle into happily ever after. ❑ Confirm with EVERYONE, caterer, photographer, baker, florist to make sure everything is on schedule ❑ Confirm wedding party picked up dresses and tuxes ❑ Get everything packed for honeymoon ❑ Pick up plane or cruise tickets and travel itinerary for honeymoon from travel agent ❑ Hold rehearsal dinner and handout wedding day schedule to wedding party ❑ Take bridesmaids out for brunch and a spa day for the last time as a single gal ❑ Attend wedding rehearsal ❑ Schedule two days for yourself, one for family and one for friends
