The Tampa Museum of Art presents a survey of paintings and works on paper by artist Mernet Larsen (American, b. 1940). Larsen’s work alludes to a range of art historical references, from 12th-century Japanese scrolls, 15th-century Italian paintings, to the geometric abstractions of Russian artist El Lissitzky (1890-1941). Her early abstract compositions, such as Duccio’s Saint (1988) in the Tampa Museum of Art’s collection, reflect her ongoing formal explorations of experiential time, space, and color. Perception, perspective and experience, playful and witty, yet oddly clunky, make Larsen’s paintings endearing and dispel a moment in time. Mernet Larsen: Getting Measured features never-before-seen early drawings, a select group of studies and works on paper, and a survey of paintings. Larsen’s art resides in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Walker Art Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. Larsen divides her time between Tampa and New York City. Larsen’s work Raft (2017), as well as, Lion Couchant for the antiquities collection, have joined the Museum’s permanent collections by an inaugural vote of the Tampa Collects. Tampa Collects is comprised of Museum members that assist Museum curators in recommending artwork to add to the permanent collection.

Everyone loves a party and New Year’s Eve is a great reason to get dressed up and celebrate the season. Inspirational Performances Under The Big Top

Cirque du Soleil’s “VOLTA” Cirque du Soleil announces its 41st original production, VOLTA, a new touring show under the big top. VOLTA tells a spellbinding story about the freedom to choose and the thrill of blazing your own trial. The name refers to a sudden about-face, a change in emotion or idea often used in poetry. It also speaks to the jolt of energy delivered through the show. Inspired in part by the adventurous spirit that fuels the culture of action sports, the show weaves the adrenaline rush of acrobatics into a visually striking world driven by a stirring melodic score. Written and directed by Bastien Alexandre and Jean Guibert as the director of creation, along with the international electronic group, M83, as composer and musical director, they bring their space-age future pop sound to the Cirque du Soleil stage for the first time ever. Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Unveils Calendar and Benefitting Charities It was a night of celebration, as it was revealed which local charities will benefit from the partnership at Seminole Hard Rock Tampa during 2018. The event was hosted by WILD 94.1. The benefitting charities were Ruth Eckerd Hall, Inc. – January; Best Buddies Tampa Bay – February; Humane Society of Tampa Bay – March; Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo – April; Special Operations Warrior Foundation – May; The Florida Aquarium – June; Tampa General Hospital Foundation – July; Tampa Bay History Center – August; Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, Inc. – September; Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – October; Jackson in Action 83 Foundation – November; Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay, Inc. – December. Each charity will be featured alongside a 2018 Seminole Hard Rock Calendar Girl in connection with her month and assist in volunteer and fundraising opportunities. The Seminole Hard Rock Girls Calendar, annually features 20 of Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa’s hand-selected female team members. The 2018 calendar showcases iconic neighborhoods of Tampa Bay including Downtown Tampa, Ybor, SoHo and Hyde Park. The calendar was shot by nationally recognized photographer Joey Wright and the Seminole Hard Rock Girls were styled by Amber Flowers, owner of the Glam Squad, who partnered with The Bikini Boutique to custom fit the models in a bohemian chic wardrobe. The calendars are $12 each and 100 percent of the funds generated from sales through 2018 will be distributed evenly amongst the selected 12 local charities. The stunning décor was created by Ian Prosser and the outstanding team at Botanica International Design & Décor Studio, where the table scapes were designed to create restaurant-style dining spaces for each group and center pieces made with brussel sprouts, broccoli and cabbage. Mise en Place catered the delicious passed hors d’oeuvres and dinner and each course was paired with outstanding reception and dinner wines. The Rio de Carnaval themed event found homes for more than 31 pets and netted more than $400,000 for animals in their care. Guests drank, dined, and danced into the night, making it one of Tampa Bay’s biggest events of the year. “We are so proud to throw one of the best parties in town,” said Humane Society of Tampa Bay Chief Executive Officer Sherry Silk. “Our staff, volunteers, sponsors, and committee members work exceptionally hard to make this event successful and it is all for one thing, the animals. The money raised will go to them. A contemporary architectural style, features that include tall glass walls, wide windows and light-inviting skylights are mixed with a monochromatic color scheme. The lines and design of this sophisticated Southern California home were as striking as they were stunning. Yet, impressive as it was, something was lacking. The all-white exterior and interior walls and floors exuded polish, but no pizazz. When a Tampa couple decided to make the hillside house their personal California getaway, the first order of business was to introduce color. Not just any color, but lots of color and in lots of ways. “I kept a lot of the white, but I knew that I wanted it to be bright,” said Nikki DeBartolo, a Tampa-based businesswoman who shares the Benedict Canyon home with her husband, Chad Chronister, and son, Asher. “Los Angeles is a happy place for me, so I knew that I wanted our house to reflect that. The more color, the better.” With the help of interior designer Enrique Crespo, who also collaborated with DeBartolo on her South Tampa residence, Crespo brought bold, brilliant and beautiful touches ranging from patterned wall treatments and commissioned art installations, to custom-made rugs and designer drapes and dramatically transformed the 6,000-square-foot home. “Enrique makes every aspect of working on a house so much fun and his eye for detail is incredible,” said DeBartolo. “I could never do it without him.”

The living areas encompassing two stories now emit a much more vibrant and vivacious vibe. “When we set out to find the perfect place I wanted it to be the opposite of what I had in Tampa. So I was gravitating to anything modern,” DeBartolo explained. “I wanted it to be bright. I thought that was more fitting for the type of house that it is. I don’t do well with monochromatic. I definitely did not want this house to be boring.” A strategically placed free-floating bar separates the dining and living rooms. Its location is static, but not its appearance. Decorative pink, orange and yellow tiles forming the backdrop for the stylish piece appear to change color, based on the angle from which they are viewed. “It is a big room, but I wanted to keep it very light so I used glass and designed the acrylic cubes and kept the front of the bar white, so that it would blend in with the rest of the room,” explained Crespo. “When you look at the area you don’t feel cramped.” While some of the home’s original white surfaces remain intact, entire walls within some rooms became canvases for color. Multi-colored rugs made the terrazzo floors more of a focal point. And ceilings became showplaces for fabulous light fixtures and large, three-dimensional works of art.

Still, color alone could not complete the makeover of this ultra-modern space. “The house was very square and angular and I wanted to introduce some curved elements,” Crespo said. “In the living room Missoni sheer drapes go all the way around the room and, from there, I built off of them.” The look is rounded out by a circular rug and curved couch prominently placed beneath a circular chandelier. The floor plan provided the family with the space they needed for their lifestyle, but also easily accommodates visitors staying at the L.A. area residence. With five bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths, guests are welcome, particularly close friends and family. That is, when it is not being used as a private retreat for Nikki, her husband and son. Keeping the overall look and feel casual and comfortable and creating a home that reflects their personalities, was another design consideration. “In the family room there is a huge painting by (artist) Mr. Brainwash called ‘NOT GUILTY.’ It is of a policeman and a young boy. I had this painting made larger for this space because it reminded me of my husband, who is the sheriff of Hillsborough County, and my son,” DeBartolo added. M

Hosting A Gasparilla Party History, Traditions and Advice For Hosting A Pirate Party | By Krayl Funch

he tradition of Gasparilla goes back to Jose Gaspar, “last of the Buccaneers,” who terrorized the coastal waters of West Florida during the late 18th and early 19th century. Gaspar served as a lieutenant in the Royal Spanish Navy for five years until 1783 when, upon seizing command of a Spanish sloop-of-war, he, with his fellow mutineers, set sail for the Florida straits. And so the young Spanish aristocrat-turned-pirate, began an adventurous life as outlaw of the sea. When Jose Gaspar died, he supposedly left an untold fortune in buried treasure somewhere along the Florida coast. Though that treasure has never been discovered, the story of the swashbuckling Gasparilla was revived in 1904, when Tampa’s social and civic leaders adopted the pirate as patron rogue of their celebration. The first invasion was so successful and well-received by the people of Tampa, that a city-wide demand was voiced to replicate the carnival each year. Despite two lapses, first during an economic downturn between 1907 and 1909, and then in 1918 and 1919 when America entered World War I, the holiday continued to grow with abandon.

Fast Forward To Modern-Day Gasparilla Held each year in late January or early February, the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival is now one of the biggest events in the area, with tens of thousands streaming into the downtown Tampa area to watch the annual parade and attend concerts and parties.

Pirate gear abounds for the weeks leading up to the celebration – it can be found on painted finger nails, t-shirts and proudly flown flags on most homes – and of course, the colorful wreaths adoring doorways all around town. For many, heading to neighbors is the choice on parade day, for others it’s a time to break out beads and throw a pirate-themed party, starting on their front porch and inevitably spilling into the driveway and sidewalk. Luckily, there are plenty of choices to pick from when decorating your home for the big parade or simply for the season.

Decorating For Gasparilla Good news, the only rule when it come to Gasparilla is that there are no rules. Generally speaking how you choose to decorate is not limited by choice, but by budget. Stick with “traditional” black, red and white, gives a nod to your neighbors to the west and weave in the more colorful tones of Mardi Gras, you really can’t go wrong as long as there are pirates and beads included. Local and on-line retailers offer pirate-themed party kits that provide cups, plates, napkins, tablecloths and banners with images of the Jolly Roger, eye-patch wearing pirates, treasure chests and maps, making it an easy one stop shopping for those of you planning last minute. If you have a little more time to plan, party favors abound once holiday décor is cleared off the shelves. Pirate-themed cups, ribbons, inflatable coolers, temporary

tattoos, beach balls, “gold” coins, flags of all sizes, and of course no home would be complete without its own Gasparilla wreath. Gasparilla wreaths begin to appear mid January in the Tampa area and each is as unique as the homeowners themselves. Typically, the wreaths are adorned with coconut pirate heads, faux parrots, oversized dyed ostrich plumes, gold coins, skull-and-crossbones flags and of course, the beads.

Food and Beverage Ideas Focus on local favorites for your Gasparilla food offerings: A Traditional Brunch – items to give parade goers the base they need to endure the full day of party crashing. Bagels, frittatas and mimosas are always a fan favorite. Cuban sandwiches – so many amazing local options to pick from. Paella – a popular local favorite perfect for mid parade grazing.

A Pirates Beverage If your party is geared toward adults, setting up a self serve bar is the way to go. Most party goers are accustomed to bringing their drink of choice, however, the staples such as rum, vodka, mixers and plenty of ice are a great place to start. Or, embrace the booming craft beer industry in the area. Shop local, and fill your cooler with cans of your favorite local brewery. I also spoke with my patients, including parents who don’t know each other, but who all spoke highly of Corbett Prep,” said Maureen, a dentist and the owner of Ideal Dentistry in Citrus Park. The search for the right school was not limited by geographic locations. What mattered more to the parents than proximity to where they live or work, was the ability of the educational experience to help their sons fully realize their potential. “We were looking for the right school for our kids. We wanted a place where teachers would stretch children to their highest potential without the kids feeling pushed,” she recalled. Family ties, a feeling of camaraderie among students, faculty members and families and a caring culture, were among the criteria Chad and Sarah Harrod considered when deciding where their sons, Lee and Hank, would attend school. Chad knew firsthand the excellent foundation and quality education provided during his years at St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School. Sarah, who attended public school in her home state of Texas, recalled glowing reports from other Tampa residents, who either were students or had students enrolled at the South Tampa, independent school that was originally established in 1953. “We wanted to enroll them where they could start in Pre-K (kindergarten) and go through the entire program,” said Sarah. “I was excited about St. Mary’s because every person I met who went there talked about it with such happiness and fond memories.” Fourth grader, Lee, 10, and first grader, Hank, 7, are part of a student body that numbers fewer than 450 students. It is conceivable that a majority of the students who start attending classes at St. Mary’s Pre-K level, will continue to progress together until they graduate from eighth grade.

The emphasis on intellectual and personal growth provided in a Christian environment really appealed to the Harrods. And the opportunities for students to participate in performing arts activities, as well as both varsity and junior varsity sports, that include track and field, tennis and soccer, contributed to the well-rounded environment they sought. Programs designed to build bonds and eliminate barriers between students are another benefit of being part of the student body at the eight-acre campus. For example, Chapel Buddies encourages older students to serve as mentors to their younger counterparts, providing the opportunity for those in the know to assist others and for those who are earlier in the educational careers, gain guidance from a trusted ally. “Where I grew up, you stuck with your age group but that is not the case at St. Mary’s,” said Sarah. “Here, the children interact with each other and that trickles down to activities outside of the school. We see a lot of the parents and students at the grocery store, restaurants and sporting events. These children know each other beyond campus and I love that.”

It was an important decision that was years in the making and involved input from the entire family. Jacob Solomon and his younger sister, Victoria, were attending elementary school when their family launched a concerted effort to determine where to enroll both youngsters for their post-secondary education, sixth through 12th grades. Parents Jon and Margarite dutifully attended open houses at various schools, questioned faculty and staff members and even conducted online research to identify their best options. Tampa Preparatory School emerged as the family favorite. Today, Jacob, 17, is finishing his senior year at the school where he has distinguished himself academically each semester, while enrolled in Advance Placement classes, competes in basketball and track and performs in musical theater. Victoria, 15, is flourishing in the 10th grade, while playing on the school’s volleyball team, being part of student council and participating in the arts. “Even though our kids were young, we involved them in the decision,” said Jon. “It was interesting to hear their thoughts about each school after an open house. For our kids, Tampa Prep felt very comfortable. It wasn’t like they knew a lot of students so I think it was due to past summer camp experience (at Camp Terrapin, a day camp run by Tampa Prep) and the positive shadowing day they had. They welcome parent involvement and value our voices,” added Margarite, who has volunteered on various committees, participated as a grade level representative and offered help at every opportunity. “The faculty is warm, caring and dedicated and they are always asking what is best for our students,” said Margarite.

or those that frequent the latest restaurant and bar on Harbour Island in Tampa, the place is referred to as simply, AmSo. Opened in late October, American Social has become a great place to meet up with friends, grab a handcrafted cocktail, or enjoy a glass of beer from the large selection of craft beers on tap, and catch the latest game playing on one of many large screen TVs. The Tampa location is the third establishment created by two college buddies from FSU, Rick Mijares and Paul Greenberg. The original American Social opened in Ft. Lauderdale on Las Olas in 2012 and Miami in Brickell in 2014, and now the third location in Tampa. Fresh east and west coast oysters are on the menu daily, along with shrimp and grits and grouper fingers and cheeks. The bartenders are friendly and talented and the Strawberry Honey Smash made with Absolut Elyx, Agave Nectar, Fresh Citrus, Strawberry and a Sugar Rim on the glass, was certainly delicious. Other creative cocktails include the Smoked Old Fashion and The Cam — made with Milagro Silver Tequila, Agave, Fresh Citrus and Passion fruit Puree. The wine list offers wine by the glass or bottles and there is selection of Champagne on the menu too.
