Publisher’s Notes Moving forward with a balance of physical, mental and financial health. Lately, it has been the norm to adjust our lives to new realities. This change has many of us feeling isolated, out of touch and disconnected from each other. Let’s face it, the Zoom thing can only go so far. Now is the time for us to safely reconnect with our community. A community that METRO has been part of for nearly 20 years. We’ve made some adjustments ourselves and will publish a scaled back issue over the Summer, with regular issues resuming in the Fall. Like you, we are looking forward to the rebound and reconnecting face to face with our friends and favorite places. In this issue, we are focused on METRO Home + Design. With everyone staying home, it gave everyone the opportunity to take in their surroundings and see what needs to change or be adjusted. In Home Tour, designer Enrique Crespo transforms a vacation home with bright, bold colors and textures. In At Home, we chat with homeowner Cheryl Adams and how she found the perfect home built by Modern Home Capital that has allowed her family to be relaxed, and together, during this time of quarantine. After nearly six weeks of the Safer At Home order, we are slowly seeing businesses reopen. In our feature, Reopening & Rebounding Tampa Bay, we asked top leaders throughout Tampa Bay to tell us what they are most looking forward to as life returns to our new normal. It is certainly a challenging time, but we can’t allow ourselves to panic and live in fear. We must remain strong in spirit, mind and body. We need to inspire positivity, and be the good for those around us, as well as ourselves.

Ron Sell, CEO – Spark Membership Solving Challenges and Providing Hope METRO: What inspired you to start Spark Membership? RON SELL: I wanted to help martial arts schools, like my own, succeed. Martial arts instructors impact their communities in a powerful way. They teach focus, respect, communication skills, leadership skills and help get their students physically fit. M: What has been the greatest challenge during this COVID-19 crisis?
Ron Sell
Business owner and martial arts instructor Ron Sell created a software management company in 2016 that helps martial arts studios, and other student-based businesses, manage their business. Sell had opened a new martial arts school in Tampa in 2003 and soon realized that growing his business would be a challenge without a software specific to the ins and outs of running a martial arts business. He admits to knowing little about programming at the time. “I went to the University of Barnes and Noble (Wesley Chapel Campus) and bought about $5,000 of computer programming books,” says Sell with a laugh. “I just bought them all, because I didn’t understand at the time what I
10
www.TampaBayMetro.com
needed, I just knew I had some challenges, and wanted to solve them.” Slowly, Sell built the software feature by feature and in early 2015, Sell approached longtime friend and fellow school owner, Cheong Park to expand the software to others in the martial arts business. In six short months, together with Park’s help, the software launched to raving fans. “Today, we have 2,100 customers in all 50 states and nine countries using the software,” said Sell. “What we have done for martial arts schools has related well to other student-based businesses.” METRO had a chance to chat with Sell about his company and how he adapted his business during COVID-19.
S: Right before the country was put on lockdown for COVID-19, I saw what was about to happen. All of our clients are store front locations and students go to our client’s schools to train. We started going through the “worst case” scenarios and knew if our clients were going to survive this, they needed all new tools. They would need a platform to conduct virtual classes, communication tools and more. We created a full email and text message campaign for them to get out to their students. We called it the COVID-19 RESCUE KIT. We now have schools that are teaching new students all over, they are teaching students virtually that would never have stepped into their school, because they were in another state or even another country. The biggest thing we did was lead these business owners down the right path, we provided leadership, daily communication, and insights. M: When you are not working, what do you do for fun? S: My wife and I have four boys. We live on a lake and spend our time playing. I’m blessed to enjoy time with them by jet skiing, boating, tubing and beaching!

Let’s Not Forget We’re All Human Beings A Message from Michael Lundy During this time when most of us are practicing social distancing and feeling isolated, irritable or scared, our firm has received a lot of calls, emails and memes about how all of this time at home will cause the divorce rate to rise because people are stuck at home together, forced to face the problems they are able to better ignore when they leave the home every day for work or other obligations. As an attorney, let me say that it is never a good idea to make huge decisions in the middle of a crisis unless a decision MUST be made. We all need to practice patience and kindness during a time like this. We truly need to endure this situation one day at a time. As a husband, let me say that this is a great time for some self-reflection and to focus on all of the things for which you should say “thank you” to your spouse or partner. Think about all of the things in your world that just work because your partner handles them. Whether you are the person who makes sure the car insurance bill is always paid on time or you are the
person that makes sure there is always food in the fridge, you are important to your family and you deserve to be appreciated for it. As a father, let me say that none of us is likely to ever have the opportunity again to spend this length of time with our children during the school year, and this is a great time to understand what your children are learning, how they are learning it and to be a part of it all. My kids have devoured every educational and other activity we have given to them. It reminds me that their minds really are like sponges. This, in turn, made me think (again) about what happens to kids in a divorce. Keep in mind that those little minds, like sponges, will sop up whatever they touch, so if you are in a divorce case or headed into one, please remember that every decision you make will impact those little people. Finally, as a member of this community and as a proud American, let me say that this is a great time to ask what you can do to help someone else that is really in need. While the biggest struggle most of us will face during this time is with obtaining toilet
paper or managing our own anxiety about COVID-19, there are people who will be or are already unable to pay their basic bills because their workplace has been forced to close; there are people who are sick and cannot get proper medical care; and, there are people that are victims of domestic violence whose abusers are now in the home with them all day every day, stressed out and anxious like most of us, and those people’s lives are at risk. As a member of the Board of The Spring, I ask you to consider making a donation, in any amount, to support The Spring during this difficult time. Please visit www.thespring.org/donate-now/ to contribute.

Top three things I’m looking forward to as the Tampa Bay area begins to re-open: 1. In-person human connection is important to me as I am a HUGE extrovert. I’m looking forward to having dinners with friends at my favorite places in Tampa. Anyone who knows me well knows I love to have lunch at Season’s 52. 2. When it is safe to go, I can’t wait to go to the gym. While I have loved exploring online apps and videos, I miss my local gym. Having group class teachers pushing me to go harder! 3. This time has shown me powerful ways that businesses and nonprofits have supported one another and partnered. I am looking forward to keeping these partnerships long term and creating even more synergies between our sectors… in person.

Family is so important to me and it has really been difficult to social distance from the ones I love. 2. Seeing the six stages at the Straz Center with performing artists and grateful audiences. My staff and I are working diligently and are hopeful that we can bring live performing arts back to our stages soon. 3. Getting my hair done. Enough said!
Bob Glaser
President & CEO, Smith & Associates Real Estate Top three things I’m looking forward to as the Tampa Bay area begins to re-open: 1. Being with family and friends: I can’t wait to see my family and friends together again. Zoom has been fun- but it is not the same as sharing a meal and each other’s company. 2. Community arts: Being in quarantine has made it even more obvious how valuable local arts are. I have enjoyed the outdoor murals and the sculptures that I see on my walks, but miss the creative energy of coming together with our arts community for a new performance or an art opening. 3. Exploring our city: I’ve made the most of the solitude, appreciating Tampa Bay’s natural scenery and supporting my favorite local restaurants during this difficult time. With the re-opening will come more ways to explore and have adventures in the town that I love. www.TampaBayMetro.com 25

DRG has been waiting for the right time to open a location in that area and we’re hoping to give people a sense of fun and safety as we all emerge from quarantine. 3. We’re thrilled to see all the events that make Tampa Bay unique come back, from sporting events at the Trop to concerts at the Amp to First Fridays in the ‘Burg. While we understand that these will happen slowly and over time, it’s fantastic to know that with a careful, planned reopening, the Bay Area will be up and running. 26

Top three things I’m looking forward to as the Tampa Bay area begins to re-open: 1. Seeing restaurants opening their doors allowing some of my favorite people to get back to work, and being able to enjoy some of my favorite foods including the pasta at Forbici and oysters at Ulele. 2. Joining my Orangetheory classes. 3. The reopening of barbershops, salons, spas and gyms, especially the Rock Spa & Salon at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Reconnecting with our Junior League of Tampa members by hosting an open-house at my home (once it’s safe to do so). I miss our JLT members terribly, and I cannot wait to celebrate them. 2. Attending live sporting events, especially Rays Baseball! I’m a huge all-around sports fan, but have family ties to Major League Baseball. My older brother, Johnathan Knight, is the Director of Facilities & Fields for the Chicago Cubs Spring Training in Mesa, Arizona. Hopefully, the MLB and the MLB Players Association will come to an agreement about reopening the 2020 season soon! 3. Witnessing how our local--both large and small--businesses, governments, and civic and community organizations will continue to apply lessons learned during the COVID-19 crisis to lead deep and impactful community work and achieve systemic change.

et amongst mature landscape and a sparkling pool, the Wadsworth family (Eric, Traci, Brenton and Tess) created an outdoor oasis. “The concept for the BARn began almost two years ago,” says Traci Wadsworth. “After several renditions and a few life hiccups, we finally had a design. It was just a simple structure that we could enjoy, build and decorate with worry free materials, that will look even better when used, like a good leather purse.”
32
www.TampaBayMetro.com
Shortly after the final decision to proceed with the BARn, COVID-19 hit and the family was quarantined at home. “Unfortunate circumstances brought the four of us together, and allowed us to put on our hard hats and became craftsmen in our own right,” says Traci. There are a couple important design pieces that have meaning to the family including a painting by their daughter, Tess, an old light used by shrimp boats that was purchased in Mount Dora, Eric’s first fishing pole, Blackhawks and Lighting memorabilia, along with a Corona neon light. “As the BARn brought us together to build, it has also brought us together almost daily to be outside by the pool for drinks, dinners, or just family talks,” says Traci. “It has already given us memories that we will cherish and a time we won’t soon forget.” M

A Tranquil Seaside Retreat By Ronda M. Parag

scaping the craziness of day-today life was the inspiration for Bee Studios to create a Master Suite retreat for a family with four young children. The design and build coordination was handled by Brooke Eversoll, CMKBD of Bee Studios, Inc. “My inspiration for the whole design began with this most amazing water jet marble in blues and whites, which I envisioned as a custom “rug” in the center of the bathroom,” said Eversoll. “I wanted to evoke a light airy space to let the marble sing. I balanced the rug with neutral walls and floor tiles, and added a pop of

blue in handmade artisan tiles. My design concept was to create his and her furniture vanities, a freestanding tub, an open concept shower, and a private commode area.” Once the original design was approved, the demolition of the space began and as luck would have it, there was an unforeseen obstacle – a structural issue that added additional expense and time to the project, but allowed Eversoll to re-think the design and suggest improvements that the client excitedly agreed to. The changes allowed for a flip of the closet and the bathroom to capture larger windows for the bathroom
and allowing for the tub to be centered under the windows and the linen cabinet to be a focal point standing at the end of the tile rug. “I am so grateful for a team that was able to pivot and help turn this expensive and stressful situation into something positive and worthwhile,” said Eversoll. “This master bath is ready for relaxation, with the freestanding tub gracefully sitting under the windows, it was always meant to have.” M

HOME TOUR Bold Patterns, Colors and Textures For A Vacation Retreat By Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Nicholas Ferris

he desire to add color to a home with a clean, transitional, modern interior is what the owners of this Boca Grande home wanted when they sought out interior designer Enrique Crespo, Principal of Crespo Design Group. Although the owners live out of the country, it wasn’t difficult to present, design and complete the project. Now more than ever, we realize that although that personal connection is essential, there are ways to work remotely, and virtually, to get the job done. The design process started in Fall 2019 and the bright, bold and colorful Boca Grande vacation retreat was recently completed. “It was easy to make virtual presentations and we would mail samples of finishes and suggested fabrics,” said Crespo. “It is not difficult to work with a designer virtually.” Throughout the three-story, single family home, Crespo Design Group sought to add splashes of color and whimsy through the furnishings, window treatments, beddings, lighting fixtures and rugs. The main living space is on the 2nd level with stunning waterfront views. “The previous living area was congested and I wanted to open it up,” said Crespo. “It needed a statement piece and I found the perfect semi-circular sofa by French luxury furniture company, Roche Bobois™. The neutral gray fabric is accented with colorful designer pillows, a custom waterscape rug and a circular wood and ceramic topped coffee table. The rooms are accented with colorful Missoni window treatments. The dining table offers seating for 10 with a walnut, two pedestal offset cube and rectangle stacked base. The rectangular box-shaped chandelier above the table was sourced in Italy.

One of the most striking pieces above the stairwell is a vintage 1960s Murano glass chandelier made in Italy. The chandelier has been re-wired to meet current electrical codes. Leading to the third floor, the stairwell has been covered with a Missoni stair runner to bring in the blue, pink and orange hues throughout the home. The iconic motif of Missoni adds harmony with the chevron pattern and vibrant color tones. Most of the artwork existed in the home, including the bamboo art installation. “We created pops of color, as you move through the home from room to room,” said Crespo. “Wallpaper has made a come back,” said Crespo. “With the home on the water, we used the grass cloth in the bedrooms to add a layer of texture that you wouldn’t be able to achieve otherwise.” The bedrooms are relaxing and cozy, yet contemporary and perfect for a restful nights sleep. The bone inlay geometric, black & white night stand in one of the guest rooms combines both style and function. The bamboo and cane headboard compliment the nightstand and the contrasting stone base of the lamp. “The use of grasscloth on all the angled walls adds that tropical feel,” said Crespo. The color palette of creams, blacks and grays pop with splashes of orange in the plump pillows.

The hand wall sconces above a bench in the first floor foyer add a touch of whimsy and certainly a great conversation piece. “They are so fun,” said Crespo. “I presented some different suggestions and these clients liked the ideas and were able to think outside the box.” One of the unique pieces in the foyer is the floor lamp designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. “The statement piece console came from London and the teal inserts are vellum,” said Crespo. “We created the custom area rug to complete the space with splashes of pinks, teals, creams and grays.”

On the first floor, the bar and lounge area offer comfortable seating to relax on the sectional covered with blue hues drawn from the palette of the nearby pool and water views. Belly up to the bar to sip a cocktail from the modern, brass bar stools. The glass topped coffee table base is reminiscent of ocean waves. Through the use of color, fabrics and furniture, the design reflects the tropical location and maximizes the waterfront views and the owners could not be happier with their vacation retreat. M

AT HOME Finding Calm In A Modern Traditional Design By Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Tony Sica

heryl Adams was walking by the single-story home under construction and decided that it would be perfect for their large family. Their current home was just too small, having sold their previous waterfront home in Culbreath Isles. This home was spacious and large enough for their family to spread out, with every room serving a purpose. Built and designed as a spec home by Steve Rogai, President of Modern Capital Development Group, the timing could not have been better, as Cheryl was able to select all the finishes including flooring, lighting, tile, countertops and fixtures. With the help of designers Allan Domagas and Effie Griffith, who Cheryl has sought their design talents for over 20 years, Cheryl created a home that is both a combination of modern and traditional design. “It was effortless,” said Cheryl. “Steve has great taste and with the help of Allan and Effie, the process was stress free.” The screened lanai is one of her favorite features of the home. Across the back of the home, the lanai can be accessed through pocket doors that slide completely out of the way, creating space large enough for both living and dining areas. “It’s where we spend most of the time,” said Cheryl. “We couldn’t pick a better quarantine home.” Along with husband, Harvey and their two daughters, Cheryl’s son and his fiancé from New York are currently staying at the home. “Everyone has their own space,” adds Cheryl. The main color scheme of the home are shades of gray and black that lend to a contemporary feel with the furnishings of comfy sofas, graphic floor coverings and sleek lighting fixtures. Cheryl describes the design style as Modern, French Farmhouse. “The home is perfect for entertaining,” said Cheryl. “Our home is where we gather as a family.”

Cheryl also opened up their home for the LAMPLighter’s annual Silver Coffee. The charity event raises funds for the children of Metropolitan Ministry and Joshua House. It was one of the most successful events for the charity, and Cheryl and Harvey’s home was filled with guests, that explored every room in the home. The open floorplan easily accommodated all the guests. One of the biggest draws of the 5,000 square foot home for Harvey and Cheryl was that it was a single story home, which is rare in south Tampa. Most developers want to maximize the lot and go up with multiple stories. “We definitely use every room and there is no wasted space,” adds Cheryl. “We were in Canada during most of the completion of the home. I came back once or twice, but otherwise we did Facetime. It was easy and there were no mistakes. It was better than I would have dreamed,” said Cheryl. “Steve is so particular and communicated great with my design team and his team. His word is good.” “I enjoyed the entire process with Harvey and Cheryl,” said Steve Rogai, Luxury Builder/Developer. “I don’t build just a home, I strive to build a relationship. I cared, as much as they did, about building their home.” Regardless of the home budget, it is important to develop a trust with your builder. “It is all about the process and trust,” said Rogai. “It’s the relationship, the human factor, that makes all the difference in the end.”

“It is a give and take process,” said Rogai. “Each party has to respect and trust that the other will do the right thing.” Building a custom home can take a year or so. “It’s like a mini-marriage,” said Rogai. “Everyone needs to be comfortable working together. It is not “if” something goes wrong, it’s “when,” and how the issue is handled is what sets us apart from the competition. I always strive to make things right. I can’t stand for a client leaving dissatisfied.” One of the highlights of building the Adams’ home for Rogai was the experience. “We were able to work with the design team through the completion and staging,” said Rogai. “With custom clients, we were able to take the luxury designs and finishes to meticulous detail and finish to their liking.” “Steve builds an amazing home with attention to detail,” said Cheryl. “It’s personal to him. I’ll still call with something, and he takes care of it so quickly.” “I believe what sets Modern Capital apart is my direct involvement, and our internal management teams,” said Rogai. “From accounting to the field, we have all the pieces in place to create that custom dream home. I consider every home we build as part of my legacy that will still be standing, long after I’m gone.” Cheryl is thrilled with her new home, but says with a laugh, “I would definitely be up for building another home with Steve and Modern Capital. Never say never.” M

Last year, Baisden gallery installed a permanent installation of 54 Audrey Phillips paintings in the new Southard Family Building at the University of Tampa. Baisden has also formed a collaboration with The Current Hotel. As part of the Autograph Marriott Collection, The Current Hotel created a dedicated gallery space to feature local artists. The first featured artist is contemporary artist Alberto Murillo. “We are ecstatic to partner with the
