Publisher’s Notes The Fall season is in full gear and METRO has been out and about at numerous charitable events. There are so many worthwhile causes that are doing good works in our community. All of the mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts and grandmothers out there need to take care of themselves, for themselves and their families. So often the female of the house is so busy taking care of others, she may neglect her own needs. It is important to take charge of one’s health and Mary Lou Janson interviews three local experts in the area of nutrition, exercise and prevention in the feature A Healthier You. Photographer Stacy Larsen captured the light and airy interior of Steve and Patti Kruger’s home in South Tampa in METRO HomeTour. Katie Gagnon, owner of Blue Moon Trading Co. assisted Patti in creating a coastal feel with lots of light, airy colors. We hope you will be inspired to update and refresh your home’s interior. In Home Details, we’ve found a few updates with Autumn Adornments. In the photo essay, Spirit of Nature, photographer Shannon Kirsten Couch captured images that are casual and connect to the land, sea and sky. The Tampa Museum of Art hosted a fun and fashionable event last month, CITY Fashion + Art + Culture, and METRO highlights many of the models and guests in attendance. The museum also kicks off the fall season with three new exhibitions and will be hosting Pavilion XXVIII on Nov. 2. We have a glimpse of this year’s Pavilion chairs, Lea Beard and Allison Beard Luzier and a look at one of the exhibits, Fragile Waters in METRO Art. METRO will also once again partner with the Junior League of Tampa at their 10th Annual Holiday Gift Market on Nov. 8, 9, 10 at Florida State Fairgrounds. More than 150 merchants will be offering unique gift items, clothing, jewelry, toys and cookbooks, with 100 percent of the net proceeds supporting the programs and mission of the League.

An Italian Renaissance Has Begun With The Revamped Maserati Quattroporte By Ronda M. Parag
10
October/November 2013
The re-designed and improved Italian, luxury four-door Maserati Quattroporte, delivers power and impressive handling as a refined daily driver. With the body of a luxury sedan and engine performance of a sports car, Quattroporte has two base models, S and GT S, with either a V6 or V8 engine. Highlights of the new 2014 model include a new V8 engine, eight-speed transmission, and improved electronics and interior. Now that Maserati and Ferrari are sister companies, there have been improvements in both styling and performance to the 2014 Quattroporte. The interior is roomier with luxury detailing that you would expect from Maserati, but the engine is Ferrari-tuned for performance. With a switch of a button on the dash, the suspension can be changed from

“normal” mode to “sport,” creating two unique feels to the car, depending on the mood of the driver. The interior offers touchscreen navigation and iPod interface, surround-sound, digital music and satellite radio. There is also a rearview camera that assists in backing up. The back seat area is roomy and provides plenty of leg room for rear seat passengers. Cabin trims and leather upholstery colors can be mixed and matched. The Quattroporte is a great family car that has all the required features of a luxury sedan, while still retaining its heart as an exotic sports car. For more information or to test drive the Maserati 2014 Quattroporte S or GT S at Reeves Import Motorcars call 813.933.2811 or visit www.reevesimportmotorcars.com.

Flashback. The year was 1981 and on a crisp evening in early November, a young Allison Beard watched her parents with much fascination. Her father Dick donned white tails, while her mom Lillian (affectionately known as Lea) appeared in a glamorous ball gown. They were heading out to the first ever Pavilion at the original Tampa Museum of Art. Fast forward to November 2, 2013 where this Tampa tradition endures. The mother and daughter have now joined forces and are serving as co-chairs of this year’s Pavilion XXVIII. “As a kid I watched my parents dress up and go to these elegant Pavilion Balls, and I would listen to their stories about the museum,” said Allison Luzier, Pavilion XXVlll Chair. “It was natural for me to get involved after moving home Lea & Dick Beard ‘Early Pavilion’ from New York City in the late ‘90s. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to become more involved in the museum and to attend and volunteer with many Pavilions.” “Our family has been involved with Pavilion since the beginning,” said Lea Beard. “The museum was an integral part of the downtown becoming what it is today, and the new museum has become a key landmark. Pavilion is a celebration not only of the tradition of the museum, but also its bright future ahead.” On November 2, Pavilion celebrates 28 years of Tampa tradition; one that unveils an evening of New Orleans glamour, fine dining by Mise en Place, live entertainment by Acme Jazz Garage, Helios Jazz, USF Jazz , a late night after party, and the Museum’s current exhibitions: Arp, Calder, Miro: Modern Masters from the Albright-Knox Museum, Fragile Waters, and Sea of Tranquillity.

On Exhibit at the Tampa Museum of Art By Ronda M. Parag
Fall brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity and three new exhibitions to the Tampa Museum of Art. On display is a showcase of Modern Masters, Contemporary showcase of black and white photography and a new media film. With its location along the Hillsborough River — just yards before it empties into Tampa Bay (Florida’s largest estuary), the Fragile Waters exhibit was a natural exhibition to feature at the museum. Organized by photokunst, LLC and curated by Jeanne Adams, the Fragile Waters exhibit calls attention to the importance of water in our lives, documented by the 119 black and white photographs by three photographers and environmentalists: Ansel Adams, Ernest H. Brooks II and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly. From Ansel Adam’s first magical trip to Yosemite at 14, Ernest H. Brooks II’s first scuba dive at 13, and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly’s infatuation with the salt marshes at 18, each of these photographers have lived their conviction, passion and commitment to documenting and helping to preserve the environment. “Fragile Waters allows us to consider the role of photography in documenting and calling our attention to one of the world’s most precious commodities: water,” said Todd Smith, Executive Director at the museum. Ernest H. Brooks II and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly have each been referred to as the “Ansel Adams” of their genres, and like him, they have spent their lives near an ocean. The exhibition focuses on the beauty of pure free-flowing water, of reflections and light, of water forms such as rain clouds, ice and icebergs, and of life in water, providing us access to a world we may never otherwise know.

Master Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian Inspired It took Francis Kurkdjian 18 months to create his latest offerings, a new scent Aqua Vitae, a fresh and crisp scent for fall, as well as a new body care line, which consists of shower gels and body creams in Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris signature scents. Aqua Vitae means the water of life and is a unisex fragrance. In Tampa to promote his new line, Kurkdjian says fragrance has a wardrobe. “It is not right to ask a woman to wear the same perfume every day,” Kurkdjian said. “Just like a woman would not wear the same dress or color. It doesn’t make sense.” He has chosen only the finest materials to create the scent — Lemon from Calabria, mandarin from Sicily, tonka bean from Brazil, vanilla infusion, hedione and guaiac wood, the wood of life.

The Art Of Letting Go The Kruger family’s relocation from New England to South Tampa, brought about the slow process of letting go of many dark and dated keepsakes. The results were a coastal flair with lighter colors and creative flourishes.
By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Stacy Larsen
Family heirlooms, formal furnishings and an interior defined by a deep, rich color scheme, perfectly suited Steve and Patti Kruger and their four children while living in a colonial-style New England home, nestled on a twoacre parcel. Longtime residents of the Boston area and life-long New Englanders, the Krugers loved the lifestyle and living space that marked their more than 18 years in Duxbury, MA. When a chance to advance Steve’s career required relocation, family members faced uprooting their lives for the first time. New job responsibilities re-assigned his regional territory from the Northeast to the South, and a long distance commute was not an option for the close-knit family. The two oldest children, daughters Geralyn and Meredith, were away attending college but their sons, Nick and Zack, were about to start high school. Decisions were made, the house was listed, belongings packed and the search for a permanent home in Tampa was under way. Determined to live in the Plant High School district, the family had to act quickly to be ready for the first day of the new school year. “We put our house on the market and it sold at the first showing,” said Patti. With the school enrollment deadline looming, there was no time to cull through the contents filling 11 rooms of their former home so everything was packed, moved and stored while the family rented a furnished home on Harbour Island for three months.

“It was all pretty fast and furious but Steve is a hands-on dad and we wanted to stay together, Patti said. They were fortunate to find a lovely home on a tree-lined street in the Bayshore Beautiful neighborhood, that had a similar architectural look to their previous house. The familiar design, overall feel and open flow made the Krugers feel right at home right away. What didn’t quite fit were the leather couches, four-poster bed and numerous family

heirlooms that had been handed down for generations that followed them to Florida. The basic bones of the house remain intact but, since purchasing the home in 2005, the couple have made many improvements including kitchen and bathroom renovations, adding plantation shutters, French doors and new hardwood flooring upstairs, and interior painting that dramatically updated and rejuvenated what had been a bland interior appearance.

The backyard was transformed from a basic screened porch overlooking a lackluster lawn to a lush setting filled with fruit trees, flowering plants and an inviting pool and hot tub, and the family has expanded to include two lively Schnoodles, a breed that is a cross between Schnauzers and Poodles. However, a smaller floor plan and lack of both an attic and basement forced the overflow furniture initially to be stored in the garage, until decisions could be made about what to discard. “I felt like much of the furniture was dark and dated and I wanted to move in a new direction,” Patti recalled. “But there were possessions with emotional attachments that reminded us of the friends and family members left behind.” Fortunately a friendship was struck with - and a helping hand was offered by — Katie Gagnon, owner of South Tampa’s Blue Moon Trading Co. With Gagnon’s guidance, the pair carefully sorted through the accumulation of keepsakes, collectibles and furniture to identify what should be kept and what could be eliminated. Letting go of formal pieces and letting in re-purposed furniture featuring natural woods, lighter colors and an artistic flair has been a gradual process lasting eight years. The interior design will always be a work in progress, as pieces are periodically added and subtracted, but the vision Patti always had for the home has been realized. “It has much more of a coastal feel, with light colors. It’s created a really comfortable feeling that makes every room homey,” said Patti. “This is where we live, where we put our feet up and where we have friends over.” M

A Healthier You Nutrition, Exercise and Prevention
Eat well, exercise enough and make sure signals and symptoms your body sends are heeded before serious damage is done. Sounds simple enough, so why don’t more people follow those basic steps to keep their health in check? As individuals take increasing responsibility for managing their health care coverage, they likely will be more attune to their personal health. Maintaining a balanced diet, following a regular, well rounded exercise routine and participating in a wellness program that includes routine exams and tests, may go a long way towards being well, controlling health care costs and enjoying a better quality of life for a lot longer.
Food Can Be Both the Cause and the Cure
What we eat can affect how well we sleep, how much pep is in our step and help maintain our immune systems so our bodies can ward off fatigue and even disease. Ironically, food may be the culprit of these disorders as well as the cure, according to Linda Baldwin (C.P.C.E., C.H.H.C., A.A.D.P), member of the American Association of Nutrition Consultants, International Association of Health Coaches, certified holistic coach and professional chef for more than 30 years. Baldwin owns the Tampa-based Intelligent Gourmet, that helps clients manage their diets, digestive systems and disease defense through the foods they consume. This is accomplished with individual counseling, weekly meal selections of prepared, nutritionally balanced dishes she creates, and a juice fast program she’s developed designed to cleanse systems of chemicals and toxins. “From my extensive study of nutrition and food, I know there are problems that food is uniquely able to solve,” Baldwin said. “Changing the way you eat will completely change the way you feel. Managing weight, treating diabetes, keeping cholesterol levels and blood pressure in check can all be accomplished by changing your diet.” “While nutritional needs may vary somewhat for men and women, with women typically requiring more iron and more prone to calcium deficiencies, both genders generally need to monitor the quality of food they consume as well as the quantity,” Baldwin explained.
That means selecting meats, eggs and poultry that are free of hormones and antibiotics, purchasing fruits and vegetables that are organic and pesticide-free, avoiding processed foods, eliminating fast food, white flour, sugar and alcohol, and maintaining blood sugar levels by selectively nibbling on small amounts of foods that balance fats and carbohydrates. “Keep your blood sugar steady by eating a protein and carb-balanced breakfast, as well as healthy snacks throughout the day. But stay away from caffeine, sugar and simple carbs which can over-stimulate the adrenal glands and leave you feeling tired,” she said. Changing what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat can be a fairly simple fix that will pay off in improving how people look and feel, as well as how efficiently their bodies function. “Your digestive tract is your first line of defense against autoimmune illnesses. If you boost your digestive health, you’ll improve or even prevent problems,” she added. One way to quickly get your body back on track is through juicing. Baldwin recommends giving your digestive system a much-needed break while satisfying nutritional needs through juicing. “It’s an easy way to substantially increase your intake of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) which, when combined with fish oil and adequate vitamin D, can reduce inflammation and symptoms of autoimmune disorders like Hashimotos, Lupus and Chronic Fatigue,” said Baldwin.

Making the Right Moves with Exercise
There are major benefits to working out at any age and any stage of life, but one key to success is consistency. Even after long gaps between workouts, whether due to injury, illness or inability to find the time, it is vital to engage in a comprehensive exercise program that includes strength, flexibility and aerobic training. “A good guideline to follow is the FITT Principle that addresses frequency, intensity, time and type of activity,” said Nicollette Starnella, whose background includes a degree in exercise science and sports from the University of Tampa, experience teaching group exercise and certification with the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). Starnella, a head wellness coach for Fitlife Foods in the South Tampa area, works closely with clients who want to improve their overall conditioning, combat disease and prevent injuries by combining exercise with a well balanced diet. Fitlife Foods is a Tampa-based business with locations throughout Tampa Bay, offering customized weight loss and wellness programs featuring seasonal selections of prepared dishes that make it easy to enjoy delicious, healthy, properly balanced meals on the go, along with fitness assessment and counseling. “Maintaining flexibility, mobility and strength are essential
52
October/November 2013
www.TampaBayMetro.com
to achieving and maintaining overall functional health,” said Starnella. “The more often you do an exercise or stretch, the more comfortable your muscles will become with the movement and the stronger and more flexible you will become. This, in turn, reduces the risk of injury during exercise and and can minimize injuries resulting from day-to-day activities.” “Beginning or resuming an exercise program can be as basic as walking at a brisk pace that raises your heart rate to an aerobic level for 30 - 45 minutes per day at least three or four times a week,” she added. Other ways to effortlessly incorporate more mobility into your life, include parking far enough from your destination that you must walk more than just a few feet. If given a choice, opt for the stairs whenever possible. To develop better balance and tap into abdominal muscles, swap a chair for a stability ball that forces you to use your core to balance and encourage proper posture. “The main benefits of maintaining mobility and flexibility are injury prevention, overall posture, sensory reception, muscular endurance over time and disease prevention throughout your lifetime,” she said. “Exercise keeps your blood flowing smoothly and your muscles consistently active, which helps manage and prevent conditions like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease or hypertension.”

Be Proactive About Your Personal Well Being Tests
Trust and tenacity may be the best tactics to engage when it comes to taking better care of your personal health. Screening, monitoring and measuring will only go so far if you aren’t also asking questions of your primary care physician, following through on prescribed care and making sure on a daily basis you consume nutritional foods, engage in sufficient exercise and enjoy adequate sleep. “You have to be an informed person and take responsibility for your health. That means asking your primary doctor questions and undergoing a comprehensive approach to health care,” said Madelyn Butler, MD, founder of The Women’s Group, a Tampa-based obstetrics and gynecology practice, as well as a physician affiliated with St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital. The yearly checklist of preventive exams and tests recommended for women changes over time as needs vary, based on age and risk factors. For example, younger women may need to be diligent about reproductive issues and sexually transmitted diseases. Women in their 30s and 40s should undergo annual pap smears as part of their
pelvic exams as well as mammograms. More mature women may also benefit from shingles shots or pneumonia vaccines. “The medical care you need depends on factors like your age and your risk factors. You need to see a doctor who is going to take a comprehensive approach to your health care and discuss what needs to be done specifically for you,” Butler said. Knowing what to do and when to do it can be confusing. That’s why it is critical for individuals to maintain detailed medical histories providing physicians with valuable insights into any treatments, surgeries and tests they have undergone, pathology reports from procedures, a list of current medications and details about relatives who have a history of life threatening conditions. Mounting a more proactive, preventive approach to maintaining good health can result in early detection or even prevention of health-related problems, that requires establishing a relationship with a medical professional you can trust to assess and address your individual issues and concerns. It is as much fun for the parents, as the kids, to enjoy birthday games, snacks and theme-inspired activities. Themes drawn from the latest books, movies or tv shows, such as Dr. Seuss or Alice in Wonderland, allow the party to come alive creating memories of a lifetime.

icole Hubbard loves to plan a party and celebrating the birthdays of her children are no exception. Nicole and her husband, Matt, threw a combined Cat in the Hat Party for their children, Austin and Ansley, who were born literally a week apart. The cakes were created by Sylvia Cakes, with each of the 3 cakes a different flavor, and the main cake (the cat) with different flavored layers. “It’s such a whimsical and fun theme with bright, cheery colors. Really, the sky was the limit with options using this theme and it was a blast to do! I did it all by myself, but it took a lot of searching, planning and set up took a bit of time too, but they loved it,” said Nicole. “We had a bounce house, face painter (who painted patiently painted all 65 kids!) etc. My motherin-law is a retired elementary school teacher and dressed up like Cat in the Hat and read a book to the kids ... they loved it!”

For younger looking skin — faster. Multiple signs of aging need to be addressed simultaneously. Aging is an inevitable part of life. With that universal fact, most people don’t simply address a single age factor— they look to address everything that is causing them to look older such as: exercise for a youthful figure, hair color to mask grey hair, healthy diet to prevent age related disease, and anti-aging products for younger looking skin. Instead of focusing on the individual concerns related to aging skin, Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Cream takes a multi-functional approach by targeting multiple key signs of aging. With Kiehl’s cutting edge formula and proprietary Tri-Active Technology, Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Cream is clinically demonstrated to simultaneously lift, firm, visibly redefine skin contour and re-texturize skin within 2 weeks and double efficacy within 4 weeks. Toast the Season with a Bottle of Ferrari ‘Methodo Classico’ Sparkling Wines from Italy | By Kevin Pelley

as Champagne found its equal? For years the Champagne region of France and the sparkling wines produced there, have been considered the gold standard for sparkling wine throughout the world. Champagne’s cold climate, chalk soils and long tradition have made the region untouchable and the undisputed king of this style of wine. I’ve tasted sparkling wines from around the world including Spain’s fine Cava producer Gramona, Domaine Carneros and their “Le Reve” bottling and other well made sparklers from the Loire, Alsace, Sekt from Germany and countless other attempts. However, as good as these wines were, none could compare to the acidity, minerality, depth and ageability of

Champagne, until the revelation of tasting Ferrari’s methodo classico wines. Ferrari is a winery located in Italy’s Trento DOC, an appellation for sparkling wine located in Trentino, set in the shadows of the snowcapped Dolomites Mountains. In this subset of the Southern Limestone Alps, is where the Lunelli family produces sparkling wines that rival the finest bottles from Champagne. Ferrari was founded over a century ago by Giulio Ferrari. Giulio had a dream that he could produce sparkling wines, made in the ‘methodo classico,’ or ‘Champagne method,’ which could compete with the best Champagne had to offer. After studying enology at the School of Viticulture in Montpellier, Giulio returned to Italy

with Chardonnay vines to pursue his dream. Chardonnay, along with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, are the only allowed grapes in the Champagne region. Giulio was the first to plant Chardonnay in Italy. After fifty years and numerous awards, Giulio Ferrari chose Bruno Lunelli as his successor. Since then, the Lunelli family has continued to produce some of the world’s most sublime, precise, and ethereal sparkling wines on the planet from vineyards located in the Trento DOC. How has the Lunelli family achieved wines of such quality in Trento? First and foremost, all of Ferrari’s vineyards are located on the higher slopes of the Trentino Mountains. DOC incorporates the hillside as well as the valley floor, none of their vineyards are located in the valley floor where rainfall collects and grapes swell, with an overabundance of water. The Lunelli family owns significant land in the Trento DOC, but also incorporate fruit from over 400 grape growing families throughout the region. Both the estate and sourced grapes are sustainably grown with no use of pesticides or herbicides. Only miniscule sulfur and copper are allowed in the vineyard, along with green manure and composting. The Ferrari wines actually contain less than half of the sulfites that are allowed in organic wine production. Another important factor aiding in the quality of the Ferrari wines, is the soil composition of the Trento DOC. The soils are a mixture of calcareous limestone, clay and volcanic rock. There is also limestone runoff from the Alps, which helps provide minerality to the wines, much like the chalk and calcareous matter found in the soils of Champagne. Climate is another important factor for Champagne’s supremacy. Located on the 49th parallel, the Champagne region is
cold, which contributes high acidity in the wines of the region, allowing them to age for decades. This is a major factor that separates the Champagne region from almost every other sparkling wine producing region in the world. However, the Trento DOC is actually cooler! A recent study revealed the region Champagne had 1550 degree days, while Trento had 1498 degree days. Given that Ferrari’s vineyards are located on mountainsides, their sites are even cooler, thus attributing high acidity in all of their wines making them fierce competitors to their friends in Champagne. Ferrari produces eleven different sparkling wines. Though they grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they are
mostly a Blanc de Blancs house, (white wine from white grapes), meaning Chardonnay is their specialty. They are famous for three wines: non-vintage Ferrari Brut ($25), vintage dated “Perle” Brut ($35) and a vintage dated Giulio Ferrari Brut ($120). All three are 100 percent Chardonnay and each represents superb value given the quality. The Giulio Ferrari is a bucket list wine that must be tasted by any aficionado. It is made only in the best vintages and is aged a minimum of 10 years on the lees. Lees are dead yeasts cells that are trapped in the bottle as a by-product of fermentation, and add a nutty, toasted bread and textural component to the wine. The current release is the 2001 vintage and it is a complex and amazing sparkling wine that rivals any tête de cuvée or special bottling by even the best champagne houses. During this upcoming holiday season, why not toast with Italy’s finest sparkling wine by enjoying a bottle of Ferrari. Salute! M —Kevin Pelley, Certified Sommelier Wine Merchant: Bern’s Fine Wines & Spirits www.bernsfinewines.com
