Dalí and Duchamp Friendship and Mutual Influences The latest exhibition, Dalí/Duchamp, at the Dalí Museum, explores the relationship of two great friends, father of Surrealism, Salvador Dalí and the father of conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp. These two artists broke new artistic ground through a lifelong friendship and surprising mutual influences, while having completely different personality profiles. Dalí was a self-proclaimed genius and a defender of traditional paintings, while Duchamp believed the idea of art is more important than the completed artwork. Duchamp is famous for creating the first “readymade,” an everyday object presented as a work of art. While gaining popularity for his painting, Duchamp made the decision to stop painting. Duchamp refused to make a living as an artist and dedicated himself to playing chess. “Each artist fell out of love with painting — Dalí only temporary, and Duchamp forever,” said Curator Dawn Ades. “Art is about getting to experience life,” said Dr. Hank Hines, Dalí Museum’s Executive Director. “Both artists reveal ideas in the most efficient ways, due to their skills.” Both artists thought the idea of an artwork was of prime importance. In the groundbreaking exhibition, more than 50 works showcase the correspondence and collaborations between the two artists. There is a shared human dimension and both artists’ works showcase their panache for fun and games. The artists were great supporters of each other and admired each other immensely since the 1930s. Both artists believed that human beings need to connect through art. Many of the pieces in the exhibit highlight Dalí and Duchamp’s world of shared ideas and interests including humor, skepticism,

Tampa Bay is a top destination for those who enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle. With the promise of year round sunshine and the best beaches in the world, it’s easy to see how we continue to attract top experts in their fields. Dr. James St. Louis is an internationally known minimally invasive spine surgeon, who could live anywhere in the world. Known to thousands of patients from around the globe, he was the surgical founder of Laser Spine Institute. In January, he joined Physician Partners of America in Tampa, Florida. When he’s not in the PPOA office performing procedures, the Belleair resident describes himself as an outdoor guy, turning his six children on to active vacations. Last summer, he and his son trained with Laird Hamilton, considered the world’s best wave surfer and paddle board expert. But water sports are only the beginning. Born in Norway, a tiny town in northern Michigan, he grew up on ski slopes and hiking trails. “I’ve always felt alive in the outdoors,” St. Louis says. As a college athlete at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, and during his long military career, St. Louis says, ”I learned to love hunting during my career in the U.S. Army,” while his many worldwide adventures continued. And new adventures are just beginning, professionally speaking, as he joins one of the state’s fastest-growing healthcare companies.

Colorful, Bold and Creative With a flair for fashion and love of art, Compass Land & Title owners and founders, Phil and Valerie Yost, designed the new St. Petersburg office together. Rather than a stuffy and conservative law office feel, the Yost’s inspiration was to create a gallery experience with local artists and make the space interesting. Compass Land & Title recently celebrated their colorful new 4,000 square foot office in downtown St. Petersburg, located on Central Avenue on the 4th Floor of the First Central Tower, with a ribbon cutting and celebration with champagne and bites by Il Ritorno and ASIE Pan-Asian, for clients and friends. Chamber of Commerce President Chris Steinocher welcomed the guests and cut the ribbon. A colorful installation of glass art by Zen Glass adorns the entry way as a greeting to clients. Inspired by Chihuly’s work at the Morean Arts Center, the artists at Zen Glass created a reef as a focal point at the entrance. On the adjacent wall is a surf board created by Greg Noll, a pioneer of surfing who surfed on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii. It is said that he rode what many believe to be the largest wave surfed in December, 1969. “I surfed when I was younger and now a hobbyist,” says Yost. “It’s how I stay in touch with my youth.” The walls are painted with bright colors of yellow, green and pink. The break room has a mural of flamingos. “It’s a shout out to the heritage and colorful birds at Sunken Gardens,” said Phil Yost. Large metal letters spelling out Compass adorns another wall next to the reception desk. The back-lit panel in the conference room was salvaged from the now-closed Z-Grille restaurant, and a vinyl octopus is etched on the glass. Yost says that one of the biggest purchases anyone will ever make is the purchase of a home and he wanted to create a WOW experience for his clients. “Plus, it is an excuse to collect more art,” Phil says with a laugh.

Ladies were encouraged to wear all white and hats, while men and children were to wear all-white sporting attire. Amid the professional cricket league’s instruction to those unfamiliar with the classic English sport, gourmet British/Indian cuisine and specialty cocktails were served to the nearly 150 patrons in a room of tables, adorned with vintage teapots full of orange and green flowers. A silent auction table filled with fabulous prizes and priceless experiences, excited the Tampa crowd dressed in all white ensembles, along with the hopes of winning the 50/50 raffle cash prize; both of which counted for thousands of dollars raised for the Tampa-based non-profit. The American Heart Association Celebrates 60 Years of Progress in Tampa Bay

Todd and Karen Wanek

Ken and Jenny Jones

The 2018 American Heart Association Tampa Bay Heart Ball chaired by Todd and Karen Wanek of Ashley HomeStore, and Ken and Jenny Jones of Third Lake Capital – marks the community’s 60th annual gala.

The Heart Ball is known for combining fun and philanthropy for a matchless night that raises funds to support the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. “Most Americans have been impacted by heart disease or stroke in some way – including my own family. My goal as co-chair of the Heart Ball is to help the American Heart Association – locally, regionally and nationally – further invest in meritorious research with the hopes that one day we can beat heart disease,” said Todd Wanek. While guests at this year’s Heart Ball can look forward to a special video that paints a picture of what the future would look like without heart disease, it will also be a time to reflect on how far we’ve come in eradicating the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Americans.

“The American Heart Association was founded in 1924 and is approaching its 95th birthday but here in Tampa Bay, we’re proud to support 60 years of Heart Ball – a legacy I’m honored to be a part of. It’s astounding to see, through events like Heart Ball, how much change we can make through funding research and educational programs,” said Ken Jones. For those wondering what 60 years of change looks like, here is a glimpse: 2017: The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology redefine high blood pressure for the first time in 14 years. High blood pressure is now considered any measurement at or above 130 systolic or 80 diastolic. These guidelines serve to help with detection, prevention, management and treatment of high blood pressure.

2008: The AHA releases a statement about Hands-Only CPR, saying that bystanders who witness the collapse of an adult should dial 9-1-1 and provide high-quality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the middle of the victim’s chest. This is a departure from traditional CPR that requires rescue breaths. 2004: Go Red For Women – a national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women – begins. Go Red provides the education, awareness and tools women need to prevent cardiovascular diseases and live a heart-healthy life. 1997: The association’s Stroke Division forms. The next year, it’s renamed the American Stroke Association and begins work raising awareness, and striving to improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of this disease. 1985: AHA-funded researchers Drs. Joseph Goldstein

and Michael Brown are awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their research on how cholesterol enters cells, helping us understand how to control cholesterol levels. 1970: The AHA runs its first public education campaign on early warning signs of heart attack, spreading lifesaving messages to help people pay attention and take action. 1966: A project funded by the AHA leads to a technique to correct septal defects in newborns, showing that major heart procedures can be performed with a catheter. 1958: Radioactive potassium and rubidium are used to measure regional blood flow in research led by Dr. Lewis Sapirstein and supported by the AHA. The findings help advance knowledge of blood flow throughout the entire circulatory system.

Snapshot A REAL ESTATE SNAPSHOT OF FOUR BAY AREA NEIGHBORHOODS Compiled by Ronda M. Parag

Beaches or Burbs, Town or Country, Tampa Bay Metro takes a snapshot of what homebuyers can expect to get for their money, in four Tampa Bay area real estate markets. The four regions of the Bay area that are desirable and offer great quality amenities include Carrollwood / Lutz, South Tampa, Old Northeast / Downtown St. Petersburg and Pinellas Beaches. Experts agree the real estate market in the Tampa Bay area is hot right now and each of these areas offer their own unique advantages and lifestyle amenities. According to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties combined real estate market sales grew 11 percent in 2017, while listing inventory shrunk by 4 percent. Bob Glaser, President, and CEO of Smith & Associates Real Estate, said 2017 was a healthy year for the Tampa Bay real estate market, despite low inventory. “We are bullish on the Tampa Bay Real Estate Market in 2018 and beyond,” said Glaser. “Florida’s population continues to grow, and there are no signs of it slowing down in the next few years. I still believe there are great values to be found because we are lagging behind other coastal areas.”

are so desirable. In just a short 15 minute drive, there is an international airport, world class shopping, and three professional sports venues. All of the convenience comes at a higher in price, as compared to other areas away from the city central, but most would say it’s worth it. The revitalization in north downtown includes the Heights and the newly opened Armature Works, with dining options and event space. Downtown Tampa offers numerous apartments and condos and more continue to be built to meet the demand. Popular communities in South Tampa include Bayshore, Davis Islands, Hyde Park, SoHo, Palma Ceia, Culbreath Isles and Port Tampa.

The area has a variety of housing types, including single-family homes, townhomes and apartments. Average commute time is 26 minutes and median home cost is $176,500 according to Sperling’s Best Places. in Vinoy Park and Straub Park, brick streets, granite curbs, sidewalks, brick alleys, mature trees and a variety of architectural styles of historic homes. The ONE area has 4,100 households and has some 10,000 residents, according to the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association. The downtown area offers numerous spots for dining, shopping and fun, with Sundial serving as a focal point with its restaurants and shops, including Locale Market, Sea Salt and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

Pinellas Beaches It’s what we all move to Florida for, the beautiful sun, sand and surf. Three of Pinellas County beaches have been named #1 in the nation, Clearwater Beach, Fort DeSoto County Park and Caladesi Island State Park. Pinellas County has 588 miles of coastline with 35 miles of beaches. From beach cottages to condominiums to luxurious beachfront mansions, it is easy to see why Pinellas County is the most densely populated county in Florida.

The Look of Love

Building and designing a family’s dream home By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Susan Carnes

D

esigning a new home for their family of five was truly a labor of love for Benjamin and Nadia Heldfond. Their former South Tampa residence, located off Bayshore Boulevard and south of Gandy Boulevard, lacked the space they needed and amenities they desired.

When a waterfront parcel became available in a Westshore neighborhood, that also moved them closer to other family members, they quickly bought the lot and began planning the house of their dreams. To accommodate style preferences, Benjamin likes dark colors while Nadia

is drawn to lightness and brightness, the couple collaborated with David Seidenberg, a principal with Bayfair Custom Home builders. Results reveal stunning spaces and flowing layouts featuring dramatic wood beams, window frames and floors that contrast with neutrally shaded walls and ceilings.

“This was a blank slate that I was able to create into a home that is comfortable and livable, yet stylish and current,” Crespo said.

To fully furnish and finish the five-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bath home, the pair turned to interior designer Enrique Crespo, founder of Crespo Design Group. “This was a blank slate that I was able to create into a home that is comfortable and livable, yet stylish and current,” Crespo said. The custom-built, two-story, 7,000-square-foot residence was designed with the demands of an active family in mind, providing functional pieces and places, as well as areas suitable for entertaining. Furnishings and fabrics had to be durable enough to accommodate the wear and tear of day-to-day demands from the household that includes son Asher, 14, daughter Izzy, 4, and the youngest son, Jackson, 2, as well as the family pet, a mixed breed bulldog and pit bull named Alabama; and the floor plan needed to fully embrace the waterfront it overlooks. “One of the things I expressed to the builder was that when someone walks in, I wanted a wow factor,” Benjamin Heldfond recalled. Twelvefoot high ceilings, wall-to-wall windows and folding glass doors flood both floors with natural light, while framing beautiful bay views.

“I wanted to bring out the colors that you see least in the painting,” Crespo said.

“At night we can see the lights of the bridge and the reflection of the water from our bedroom. It is so peaceful here, it is a game changer. We trusted Bayfair and Enrique and we could not be happier,” he added. Strategically placed pops of bold colors, distinctive light fixtures, patterned rugs, textured walls and works of art the couple collected over the years, that include a prominently placed commissioned painting by artist Gregory Siff, combine with custom furnishings, select pieces from the Heldfond’s former home and family heirlooms to create a captivating interior. The contemporary paintings also served as inspiration for the color palettes Crespo incorporated into select rooms. The more minimal colors featured in a canvas drove his design decisions, enabling him to bring both balance and beauty to the space. “I wanted to bring out the colors that you see least in the painting,” Crespo said, noting the use of yellow silk on the dining room chairs and the accompanying amber, blue and yellow drapes. Because this home was the first the couple designed together, it provided the perfect way to portray their love for each other. www.TampaBayMetro.com

A neon light installation, custom-made for this residence, was installed at the entrance to their master bedroom featuring words from the Coldplay song “Green Eyes.” “When that song first came out, Ben and I were (in the early phase of) dating. The lyrics were so applicable on every level, except neither of us have green eyes. Imagine having the most perfect love song but the hook doesn’t fully make sense,” Nadia recalled. “We actually both had burdens when we met and we truly helped support each other and give calm to each other’s storm. It’s like he is my anchor and I am his rock.” That same song was played at their wedding and today the lyrics serve as daily reminders of their mutual devotion. Mounted on the wall is the verse: I came here with a load And it feels so much lighter Now I met you The remainder of the chorus, which is not on display, continues: And honey you should know That I could never go on without you Even the reference to green eyes eventually gained relevance when their youngest son arrived, revealing eyes of a greenish and hazel hue. “Total recessive miracle,” Nadia said. One Happy Island for Romance

Aruba | By Ronda M. Parag

R

omance abounds on the island of Aruba that is unique among the Caribbean Islands. The beautiful island has unique topography and vegetation due to the constant trade winds. With Dutch influences, Aruba is located only 16 miles from South America. Aruba is a great destination for a romantic getaway or anniversary trip, with its beautiful azure waters and beaches, luxurious hotels, fine dining and adventures. A recent visit to the “One Happy Island” provided an opportunity to scout out a few romantic spots for relaxation, dining and sight seeing. The Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino offers luxurious accommodations with both all-adult and more family-centric rooms, with one bedroom suites available in the heart of Oranjestad. The private beach and private Renaissance Island, are stunning spots to get away from it all. The pink flamingos at the private beach make for great photos and memories. The hotel offers exceptional service to create a magical vacation and memories for its guests. Another option to stay and feel

pampered is The Ritz-Carlton Aruba, located on the Caribbean island’s Palm Beach. The fantastic Spa with 13 treatment rooms, offers personalized massages and salt scrubs. A day at the Spa will help the spirit, mind and body get into vacation mode. Don’t miss the opportunity to sail the seas aboard the Tranquilo. The private catamaran tours are ideal for exploring the waters around Aruba. Known for its crystal clear waters, snorkeling and scuba diving are not to be missed. For a day’s adventure, the captain and crew provide delicious cocktails, snacks and lunch or even a sunset cruise. To get a feel for the island, discover a jeep tour with De Palm Tours. There are several options, but we opted for the two (squeezed in three) seater jeep for a rugged and wild discovery of the island of Aruba. It is like playing follow the leader, with the main guide forging a trail through the landscape and all the other jeeps following along. The desert-like terrain with lots of cacti, secluded beaches, natural pools and wildlife, including goats and iguanas, were amazing.

As a multi-cultural destination, Aruba offers a vast selection of dining options that will satisfy the most discerning diners; from a romantic brunch at The Restaurant at Tierra Del Sol, to dinner on the beach at Barefoot Restaurant or Quinta del Carmen on the courtyard under the stars. One of the most romantic experiences for dinner was at the Screaming Eagle Restaurant. Couples can have Dinner in Bed and actually dine on an elevated bed surrounded by sheer draping for privacy. The menu offers a selection of French-fusion cuisine, over 300 wines and service that is superb. Enchanting. Edgy. Alluring. Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront | By Ronda M. Parag

I

n the heart of Savannah, along the Riverfront, the Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront is a great place to stay, while discovering the historic town. Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and is steeped with history, being one of the original 13 colonies. It is also known for having the second largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the United States. Perhaps one of the best things about staying at the Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront is that once you arrive, at this jewel of a hotel, there is no need for a car. Between various trolley tours, horse drawn carriages, and pedi bikes, you will manage to get everywhere you want to go to explore the city. Take a step back in time to the city that was established in 1733 and tour historic mansions, shop, dine and visit the 22 town squares.

As part of the Autograph Collection of The Kessler Collection, the 75 room hotel boasts luxury accommodations with vintage dĂŠcor designs with British furniture, brass and leather design elements. The original artwork and rich dark woods and leather chairs in the lobby area, seem to invite guests into a living room. There are several types of guest rooms, but if available, go for the River View and enjoy the picturesque views of the Savannah River, and watch as the barges and ships pass along the riverfront. All the rooms offer complimentary Wi-Fi, luxurious bath amenities, plush bathrobes and unique artwork. The bathroom areas have marble vanity tops and feature striking seashell lighting fixtures. All rooms have a shower, no bathtubs.

Rocks on the Roof offers stunning views of the river and has become a great place for guests to gather and enjoy the scene. Guests can enjoy tapas-style bites and craft cocktails, along with music five nights a week. On the weekends, there is a direct elevator to the roof top for non-hotel guests to enjoy the views and nightlife. On cool evenings, the fire pit will keep everyone nice and toasty. Rocks on the River offers a comfort spin on Southern classics for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a romantic weekend getaway, Savannah is a little over a 5 hour drive from the Tampa Bay area, or fly to the nearby Savannah International Airport. Chef-Driven American Classics

The Rez Grill at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino | By Ronda M. Parag

I

nside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is a gem of a new restaurant that will tantalize your taste buds, even if you are not a big gamer. The Rez Grill located on the Mezzanine level, opened in mid-December 2017, under the direction of Culinary Director, Frank Anderson. Anderson has run the kitchens of LA restaurants — Animal and Son of a Gun, and both are James Beard-awarded. The contemporary and casual interior was a collaboration between designer Lawrence Lee Associates and architect Klai Juba Wald. Driftwood beams and modern mosaic tiles create a comfortable, not stuffy feel. Booths surround the exterior of the dining room, while the communal tables and dining spaces showcase the open kitchen and the wood-burning grill. The grill is fired by cherry wood from Florida, that will give depth and add a woody flavor to the dishes. The American Grille menu is very approachable and includes Anderson’s take on some favorite classics. As much as possible, the menu sources local seafood

and sustainably farmed ingredients. “My cooking style is straight forward and approachable,” says Anderson. “Classic technique, done right by using seasonal, high-quality ingredients.” Currently, the most popular menu item is the King Crab. It is served with grilled bread and grainy mustard butter. It is a great starter for the table. The Benton’s Ham served with the house biscuits and cherry-pepper jam and red eye aioli, is large enough to share with a group. For a fresh and light salad, try the Cucumber and Heirloom Tomato salad, flavored with pickled red onion, yogurt, dill, garlic and red wine vinegar. The menu has a nice selection of steaks and the Ribeye-Cap is delicious and cooked to perfection. Meant to share are the Table Participation menu items that include St. Louis Ribs, Fried Chicken (a whole bird, complete with waffles), and Veal Chop Milanese. For seafood lovers, Florida caught grouper, snapper and shrimp and grits are on the menu. If you are looking for a sandwich,

the Lobster Roll or The Rez Burger will not disappoint. The center bar area is the ideal spot to meet friends, or a date, for a made-to-order drink. The mixologists are skilled at making the perfect cocktail with house-made juices and syrups. In addition, there are four micro-breweries on tap, three local to Tampa. The handcrafted Nacho Libre is delicious – a prickly pear vodka, house-made sour mix, hibiscus and mezcal ice. The signature cocktail, The Rez Cocktail, is house-infused pineapple tequila, mint, lime and club soda. “I want to use as much from Florida as we can, on the drink and (dining) menu,” says Anderson. “We have great produce and citrus coming from our backyards. We need to use more of it.” Open for dinner only on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. 11 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
