A Grand Beginning to Happily Ever After

Publisher’s Notes Congratulations! Now that you are engaged, let the fun (and planning) begin. Whether it is a small, intimate wedding or an extravagant affair, there are lots of ideas and inspiration within the pages of Tampa Bay Weddings. From Bridal Style to Groom Style to Cake and Flower ideas, our goal is to provide a variety of looks to make the process easier. In Real Weddings, local brides shared their beautiful and romantic stories. Although reluctant at first to have a planner, these brides agree that having a wedding planner certainly reduced stress and made the entire process more fun. The Gown Guide offers suggestions on the latest trends from Tampa Bay area bridal boutique owners and top designers, so each bride-to-be will look her best on the big day. The spectacular waters and exotic location of Mexico with sunny skies and warm temperatures, is a wonderful location for a honeymoon. The RIU resorts offer numerous locations in Mexico, but we discovered the RIU Palace Mexico in Playa del Carmen region. The all-inclusive resort has recently been renovated and provides great service and amenities. Several local photographers and a team of talented individuals created four spectacular Inspiration shoots. We were fortunate to have Jonathan Fanning’s Game of Thrones inspired images. As a team concept with Sandy Rule, of Sandy Rule Events and Stephanie and Marty Prenatt, of FH Weddings & Events, the images are stunning. Burkle Events and photography by Esther Louise produced the Mod Shoot. Two local hotels the Epicurean in Tampa, and the Birchwood in St. Petersburg, are featured in Inspiration shoots by Theresa NeSmith Photography and Limelight Photography. We received some expert tips from Puff ’n Stuff’s executive chef, Cathy Michaud, in Ask The Experts. Chef Michaud provides great ideas for hosting the bachelorette party, bridal shower, or tea party brunch. For the latest bridal information and ideas, be sure to visit our website at www.tampabaywed.com and be sure to “Like Us” on Facebook at Tampa Bay Weddings. We aim to inspire and provide ideas for your big day. If you have any ideas or suggestions on features or articles that you want to see in the next issue, please contact us. Cheers,

It’s All In The Details Gown Trends | By Ronda M. Parag

Romona Keveza

Searching for the perfect bridal gown can be overwhelming and exhausting. Every bride we’ve ever asked, says they know it is “the dress” the moment they put it on. Kerrie Hileman, owner of The White Magnolia Bridal Collection offers these suggestions: “When picking a gown, be open-minded and don’t over think it. When looking for a gown it’s important to find something that fits your everyday style and is going to complement you, not overwhelm you. Bring the people who mean the most to you and who understand your style and vision for your big day. And most importantly, remember to pick a gown that you will want to look back on thirty years from now, and know that you will still love it!” There is something magical that is hard to describe. Many girls continue to search, but most come back to the gown that made them feel simply beautiful. MaryIsabel Rooney, owner of Isabel O’Neil Bridal Collection in Tampa, says that sheer or illusion necklines and low backs with lots of detail are the current trends in bridal gowns. “I have

20

www.TampaBayWed.com

also seen the incorporation of new fabrics with more texture, like mohair and hammered silks, along with different variations of lace,” Rooney says. There is interplay of delicate textures, sheer layers and soft washes of color in the White by Vera Wang collection, at David’s Bridal. “We are seeing a lot of beading in detailed patterns … sometimes on the bodice and sheer illusion neckline, but even more so on the sheer open back,” agrees Megan Bubalo, owner of Malindy Elene Couture for the Bride. “Gowns are moving, even more, towards the delicate intricacies of last season. The back detailing has become a favorite among brides as they search for sleek sophisticated looks, but fun details.” The gown must reflect how the bride wants to look and feel on her big day. Whether a ball gown with a modern edge or a draped lace column gown, there are styles, designs and fabrics to make each bride-to-be feel that she is the star of the day.

Tips for Hosting Pre-Wedding Gatherings at Home Cathy Michaud, Executive Chef for Puff ‘n Stuff Catering With over 25 years of culinary and catering experience, this expert has all the answers to help you create a scrumptious and stress-free event, in the comfort of your home. Bachelorette Party | Every bride deserves a “cheat” day, and what better way to spend it than with your girls. If she loves BBQ, consider mini sliders and pigs in a blanket. If she’s a pasta lover, introduce a chef-attended pasta station, like lobster mac ‘n cheese. If chocolate is her weakness, then go bold with a sweet treat that’s worth the cheat, like the CX7 (chocolate 7 ways). EXPERT TIP: Target your selections to the bride’s absolute favorites and pair them with a few less indulgent options.

food is a fun trend we are seeing a lot of recently. For this kind of at home event we recommend serving childhood favorites with an elegant twist, such as soup and sandwich featuring a tomato bisque shooter topped with grilled cheese, or one of our favorites, The Chicken In The Egg, which is a delicious combination of deviled eggs and spicy Southern fried chicken. EXPERT TIP: Build a cohesive menu that complements the bride’s taste and style, as well as the theme.

Megan and Matthew (Matt) met through a mutual friend, like many couples. They were introduced to each other during a group outing at Hula Bay, in August 2009. They started conversing and things were going well. The group proceeded to the next place, where Matt’s car was subsequently towed. Luckily for Matt, Megan had a friend who offered to drive Matt to the impound lot, where Matt discovered he had a flat tire. Luckily, Megan’s friend also knew someone who ran an all-night tire shop. Ultimately, Matt was able to get home. Megan, being impressed by Matt’s extreme patience, decided to give him a call, but not until two weeks later. A date was arranged with Thai food followed by dessert. Matt was impressed with Megan’s beauty, wit, and laid back approach to life. Megan was impressed with Matt’s hair. The happy couple bought a home in December 2010 and had a daughter, Brooklyn Rose on March 1, 2011, the same birth date as her dad, Matt. Prior to the proposal, Matt did ask Megan’s father for his blessing and he proposed on the roof of their home. With no clear direction on what they wanted, the couple reluctantly met with wedding planner, Christina Craft from Ideal Design Events. “I didn’t think I needed a planner,” Megan recalls. After meeting for hours, they hired her the next day to assist with their wedding. The couple searched for the perfect venue to suit them and eventually decided on the JW Marriott in Orlando, where the couple enjoyed many wonderful family trips. Many of the vendors including the planner, photographer, DJ, floral designer, and hair and makeup team, all traveled to Orlando for the wedding. The bridal party was filled with family and friends. Megan had eight bridesmaids and Matt had seven groomsmen. Megan’s bridesmaids consisted of college and medical school friends and a sister-in-law. Megan’s daughter, Kayla, served as a junior bridesmaid and daughter, Brooklyn, as a flower girl. In keeping with wedding tradition, Megan borrowed her grandmas hankerchiefs for the bouquet. I borrowed by my cousin’s blue shoes. “The night before the wedding, Brooklyn was walking around in shoes and she was potty training and peed in my shoes,” laughs Megan. “We spent an hour cleaning them.” Megan says that her wedding was a wedding weekend, it wasn’t just a day. “Friday, as guests arrived they were welcomed to the resort with welcome baskets full of snacks, info and gifts. Friday night the bridal party and guests took a luxury coach to the Columbia Restaurant at Celebration for rehearsal dinner, but when we came back, we had a huge welcome party in the lobby bar,” said Megan. “Matt (with Craft’s help) surprised me with a birthday cake and gifts (it was my birthday — he said this was why he wouldn’t forget our anniversary) and the welcome party turned into a birthday party.” Saturday, guests enjoyed the lazy river in the resort pool, before heading to the wedding. The party didn’t stop ’til 4:30 a.m. Sunday, a five-course brunch was served with an open bar at 10 a.m., and all the guests had breakfast, then went to the resort pool. “We all said our goodbye’s around 4 p.m.,” said Megan. The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in New York City.

High school sweethearts, AnneMarie and Michael, find love and planned a beautiful romantic wedding at the Avila Golf & Country Club, despite the demands of Michael’s career as a Navy Fighter Pilot. Both AnneMarie Talladira and Michael Edmonson were born and raised in Tampa and met at the tender age of 15. They dated on and off through the years and finally decided to get back together after Michael’s return from deployment, aboard the USS Harry S. Truman in 2010. The couple moved to Oak Harbor, WA for a year, but are now back in Florida stationed in Pensacola. Prior to proposing, Michael asked AnneMarie’s father for her parent’s blessing and her father helped plan the engagement surprise. While both families thought they were enjoying a joint theme park trip to Walt Disney World, Michael had other ideas. He got down on one knee and proposed by the rose garden in front of Cinderella’s Castle. “They had no idea they were going to witness a proposal,” AnneMarie said. “It was truly a magical moment.” The couple started planning, but then stopped and started several times due to Michael’s commission to become a pilot in the US Navy. Finally, finding a venue and time that fit their schedule, AnneMarie decided she needed a planner. Through a friend’s recommendation, they met with Christina Craft, owner of Ideal Design Events. “We met for five minutes when I knew this was the girl to help me,” said AnneMarie. “She made wedding planning fun. If I was stressed, one call calmed me down. I had no idea how much went into a wedding. It was difficult at the end because I had to move two months before the wedding, so we did phone meetings and Skype for décor and anything visual.” Several things that could have been disastrous were easily remedied by having a planner. Just a few days before the wedding ceremony, the officiant had a family emergency in the Philippines, so Craft contacted another pastor, who in a short time wrote a beautiful ceremony, after a conference call with AnneMarie and Michael. At the last minute, AnneMarie’s sister and maid of honor, who serves in the U.S. Marine Corps, was called to participate in training exercises and she could not leave her base. As a surprise to the bride, Craft arranged to Skype her into the wedding line up. “It was amazing that my wedding planner was able to plan that for me,” AnneMarie said. “I was balling when I finally realized she could see the whole thing and I could see her.” When the big day arrived, AnneMarie recalls that she could not stop smiling. “Michael looked so handsome in his uniform and I just stared at him the entire time. I was so ready to become husband and wife with all our loved ones there to witness.” Following tradition, AnnMarie had her something blue, which was Michael’s name tape off of his navy blue camo uniform sewn into the inside of her dress, a new piece of jewelry, and a borrowed hair clip from her cousin, who wore it when she got married early in the year. Due to Michael’s training schedule for flight school, the couple delayed a honeymoon, but do hope to go to Europe in the future.

Rachel McCarthy met her future husband, Ryan Carlock, online and dated for a year and was engaged for two years before becoming husband and wife in November 2013. “I wanted to wait until I graduated from law school at Stetson and took the bar before we got married,” Rachel said. Ryan says that after their second date when Rachel took him to a baseball game and then ordered wings and cheese fries for dinner, she was the girl for him. Ryan proposed on one knee just two days before Christmas 2011 and asked Rachel to open one of her presents — it was a pair of champagne flutes to toast the engagement. Another present was a stack of wedding magazines to start the planning process. “We are both fairly traditional, so we knew that we wanted an elegant and classic feel for our wedding day,” Rachel said. “As soon as we walked into Armani’s at the Grand Hyatt, we kew that was it and developed the feel of the wedding around it.” Rachel and her mom became shopping buddies for her gown. “We searched for almost 8 months before I decided on my dress,” Rachel said. “Because I’m small, I knew that I wanted something a little fitted so that I didn’t get swallowed up by yards of fabric, but I knew I had found my dress, because after all of the dresses I had tried on, it was the dress that I felt most beautiful in.” Florals and decor were important to Rachel and she had followed many bridal blogs, even before she became engaged. Rachel knew that she wanted FH Weddings & Events to do their flowers. “Everything that I’ve ever seen them do has been beautiful and when I spoke with Stephanie Prenatt, owner, we mostly talked about the feel of the bouquet and the colors,” Rachel said. “I trusted her to make something beautiful. We did talk about peonies, but because I got married in November, I didn’t think we would be able to get them because they were not in season. I was so happily surprised on my w edding day to see that Stephanie had found some beautiful pink peonies, to include in my bouquet.” A traditional wedding ceremony was held at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at Armani’s. The 70 guests enjoyed a sit down dinner with an option of steak, salmon or chicken. DJ Cory from Grant Hemond provided the reception music and Rachel says he played exactly as we asked. The couple danced the first dance to “These Arms of Mine” by Otis Redding. The couple ended the evening by enjoying conversation and cocktails with the bridal party on the terrace and a view of the Tampa skyline. The couple enjoyed an active honeymoon in Napa Valley and San Francisco and ended with four nights in Cabo San Lucas, with a stay a Capella de Pedregal, where the blissful couple were able to relax and unwind.

Wedding Checklist Congratulations you’re engaged! Wedding bells will be ringing soon, but in the meantime it’s all about the planning. Here’s a helpful 12-month itinerary to make sure your big day goes off without a hitch.

10 to 12 Months This is the period of research and exploring, what kind of wedding do you want? Pretend you are a detective seeking the best of everything: style, venue, honeymoon, the works. ❑ Schedule engagement photos ❑ Mail out engagement announcements ❑ Set a date ❑ Meet clergy, especially if one of you is converting so you can start classes immediately ❑ Start making bride/groom guest list ❑ Decide on a budget ❑ Decide on indoor or outdoor wedding, be sure to keep in mind weather conditions for outdoor weddings and it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan ❑ Begin scouting locations for ceremony, reception and rehearsal dinner. ❑ Begin researching caterers, florists, photographers, musicians and bakers ❑ Make a list with fiancee of honeymoon destinations and songs for your first dance ❑ Decide on members of the wedding party ❑ Begin shopping for your wedding dress

7 to 9 Months Now it’s time to start narrowing things down. In order to have time for the details, it’s important to get some of the big stuff out of the way. ❑ Send engagement announcement to the local paper ❑ Order your wedding dress ❑ Decide on venue ❑ Choose clergy ❑ Choose your colors ❑ Take bridesmaids shopping for their dresses ❑ Take mom shopping for her Mother of the Bride dress ❑ Meet with florist and decide on flowers for venue, wedding party and reception ❑ Meet with caterer to decide on menu and schedule menu tasting ❑ Book photographer ❑ Meet with musicians to discuss play list ❑ Meet with travel agent about honeymoon ❑ Book reception venue and make deposit

4 to 6 Months Ok, take a deep breath and relax, but not too much. Look at all you’ve accomplished; now it’s time for the details. ❑ Finalize menu with caterer ❑ Finalize guest list ❑ Order wedding invitations ❑ Start shopping for wedding rings ❑ Make appointment with jeweler if want to custom design rings ❑ Meet with baker to view and taste cake options ❑ Order bridesmaids’ dresses ❑ Shop for and order fiancée and groomsmen tuxes ❑ Book honeymoon

86

www.TampaBayWed.com

❑ Make sure passports are current if going out of the country

2 to 3 Months Now things are beginning to take form and your dream wedding is unfolding right before your eyes. Just keep focus and have fun. ❑ Order wedding rings ❑ Confirm with florist all flowers for ceremony and reception ❑ Order cake ❑ Register for gifts ❑ Shop and order party favors ❑ Pick song for your first dance ❑ Finalize play list with musicians

4 to 8 Weeks Everything is locked in, your dress is being tailored and everything is ordered. Now is the time to CONFIRM, CONFIRM, CONFIRM. ❑ Mail wedding invitations ❑ Order programs for the ceremony ❑ Go with fiancée to get marriage license ❑ Obtain, fill-out and mail all necessary forms for your name change ❑ Pick up wedding rings and check fit ❑ Final fitting for wedding dress and wedding party ❑ Make appointment with hair and makeup stylist ❑ Make nail appointment ❑ Start shopping for honeymoon clothes ❑ Purchase wedding party gifts ❑ Purchase wedding gift for your fiancée ❑ Pick up your dress and start wearing shoes around the house to ensure comfort on the big day ❑ If traditionalist–make sure have something old, new, borrowed and blue ❑ Plan rehearsal dinner ❑ Pay final payment on reception hall

1 Week Can you hear the wedding bells? That’s right in just one week you’ll go from bride-to-be, to wife! Now just a few minor details before you walk down the aisle into happily ever after. ❑ Confirm with EVERYONE, caterer, photographer, baker, florist to make sure everything is on schedule ❑ Confirm wedding party picked up dresses and tuxes ❑ Get everything packed for honeymoon ❑ Pick up plane or cruise tickets and travel itinerary for honeymoon from travel agent ❑ Hold rehearsal dinner and handout wedding day schedule to wedding party ❑ Take bridesmaids out for brunch and a spa day for the last time as a single gal ❑ Attend wedding rehearsal ❑ Schedule two days for yourself, one for family and one for friends
