Lace, Peplums And Color Are Top Trends For Spring 2013 Gown Trends | By Ronda M. Parag
S
Searching for the perfect wedding dress can be lots of fun, but also very stressful. The number of designers, colors, styles and prices can be overwhelming. The spring season offers plenty of fashionable trends to help a girl find her style. Megan Bubalo, owner of Malindy Elene, recently returned from the bridal market and said everything was opulent. “Whether done via a stylish peplum, illusion neckline, over the top and intricate beadwork, lace on lace on lace (including sleeves), hints of color or all crystal gowns, this season was not for the faint of heart,” said Bubalo. “I loved that every designer had gowns like I had never seen before. Even short dresses were shorter and sassier this year.” Inspired by Duchess Kate, a trend that continues to flourish is lace. Every runway and every designer included lace in their collection says Bubalo. “I love the illusion neckline and lace sleeves that make every girl look long and lean,” Bubalo adds. Lace continues to offer a feminine, romantic, old world feel. Designers including Anne Barge, Ivy and Aster, Badgley Mischka and Reem Acra were showing lots of color beyond basic white including blush and darker champagnes along with blues, pinks and greens. Each dress makes a statement for the bride and the trend of the season is to complete the look with bold head pieces including veils and hair pieces.

In March of 2001, Michael Tow’s family planned a vacation to Gulf Shores, Alabama to get away from the cold weather of Illinois, however the 10 day forecast several days prior to the trip saw cold weather predicted for Gulf Shores. Michael and his family were determined to find warm weather, so they decided to drive as far south as needed and stumbled upon Clearwater Beach with forecasted highs in the mid 80s. Michael fell in love with Clearwater and moved in March of 2005, shortly after graduating from Illinois State University. In June of 2008, Jackie Passanante visited her brother Rich in Palm Harbor, who had moved to Palm Harbor from Long Island several years earlier. Jackie concluded her trip by having a drink with Rich and his partner, Tony, when they suggested she move to Florida. Jackie jumped at the chance to begin a new chapter in her life by becoming a Floridian in March of 2009. Fate brought Michael and Jackie to Florida, so they could meet at a Clearwater Threshers baseball game, just two weeks after Jackie moved to Florida. They have been together ever since, and Michael proposed during a romantic getaway to Sanibel Island. The couple’s first official date was spent at Clearwater Beach, so it is only fitting that Clearwater Beach is where they would say “I Do.” The couple wanted to give their families a weekend they would never forget and found the perfect location at the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach. The Hyatt’s Sky Terrace provided an outdoor setting for the ceremony with breathtaking views, 16 stories high, of the Gulf of Mexico and intercostal waterway. Guests watched Michael and Jackie exchange vows as the sun set in the distance over the Gulf of Mexico. It was followed by a cocktail hour where guests enjoyed beverages and hors d’oeuvres while listening to island sounds played by the Island Boys on steel drums. It was time to party after the cocktail hour and the Bellaire Ballroom on the second floor provided a romantic setting for the reception. Everyone danced the night away, taking breaks only to take hilarious pictures wearing funny props in the photo booth set up by Snapshot Photobooth. Jackie knew she met her prince charming in Michael. She wanted to create a wedding centered on romance so all of their guests could feel immersed in love the way Michael and Jackie feel about each other every day. This meant lots of candles and lush flowers. Jackie knew immediately that she found the florist to bring her vision to life when she stepped into La Vie En Rose and met Nicholas and Nga Plakotoris. “Everything, from the flowers to the décor, exceeded our wildest dreams,” said Jackie and Michael. “It was visually stunning and took our breath away.” Every little girl dreams about her wedding and fantasizes about her wedding dress and Jackie was no different. She found the perfect dress at CC’s Boutique — the last one of the day and one her mom, Madeline suggested. It went perfect with Jackie’s “something old” — her great grandmother’s diamond heart necklace that her mom wore on her wedding day. “The entire day was perfect,” said Jackie. Life’s Highlights created a video that the couple shared with friends and family. “The video is amazing and truly captures a beautiful wedding that brought two people together into marriage.”

True Love Reigns A CINEMATIC PROPOSAL
Tiffany Rodriguez and Robert Coburn
Teenagers find love and more than 12 years later dreams come true as the couple celebrate their vows at the Powel Crosley Estate. Edited by Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Pure Emotions Photography

Clockwise (from top left): Tiffany and Rob celebrate their wedding day with a beautiful sunset on the Sarasota Bay. The three-tier wedding cake was simple and delicate using a lace pattern around the edges. The spanish architecture and old world feel of the Powel Crosley Estate inspired the ceremony and reception. The blissful couple share a sweetheart table at the reception. Guests wrote wishes for the bride and groom on the wishing tree. The reception tables are elegant with purple accents and delicate centerpieces. Rob and Tiffany share a dance to their first song “For You by Kenny Lattimore.
T H E
T
Tiffany Rodriguez and Robert Coburn met when they were in high school in Connecticut. Although they went to different high schools, they met at their first “real jobs” at Marshall’s. Tiffany thought Rob was cocky and full of himself, but he did have a car. Rob wondered if he should get tied down to one girl. In the end, they started dating after celebrating Rob’s 17th birthday at a bowling party. They each attended each other’s proms. “We fell in love before we knew what hit us and became high school sweethearts,” said Tiffany. “In the end, I never regretted my decision to go to that Marshall’s interview or giving the cute, sarcastic guy a second chance. It was meant to be.” “Our love runs deep and it’s times like now, when I reflect on those early days of our relationship, that it makes me appreciate having her in my life for all these years, and makes me realize how lucky I am to marry my true love,” said Robert. Fast forward 12 years later as a romantic getaway to The Ritz-Carlton, Naples served as the weekend for the proposal. Out kayaking on a beautiful sunny day, Rob found a small, secluded spot where they beached the kayak. Holding the ring in his hand, Rob got down on one knee and spoke from his heart asking Tiffany to be his wife. Tiffany, of course said yes, and the planning began for the wedding day. Tiffany wanted a Spanish style, old-world feel wedding in Columbia, South America, but soon realized the logistics of arranging an out of country wedding would not be feasible. So, the couple began looking for a place with an old world feel with a spanish element. Since most of the family and friends were going to be coming from out of the area, Tiffany and Rob wanted a location that would offer a variety of activities. They found the ideal location at The Powel Crosley Estate in Sarasota. “We wanted the wedding to be intimate and romantic surrounded by the people that were most important to us,” said Tiffany. Tiffany chose a strapless gown with a lace overlay along with a floor length veil with lace detail on the edge. For Tiffany’s “something new” she wore a necklace given to her by Rob. Tiffany chose her favorite color purple for the gowns of her bridesmaids — Lauren and Kelly; while Rob’s groomsmen included Tiffany’s brothers — Edwin (Omar) and Irvin along with his best friends — Jarrod and Paul, who wore black tuxedos. The cake design picked up the lace pattern of Tiffany’s gown. The all white, three-tiered cake, designed by Cakes by Ron was simple and understated. Each tier had different flavors with a layer of chocolate with peanut butter filling, vanilla with strawberry filling and red velvet with cream cheese filling. The cake was topped with sugar flowers matching the David Austin Roses in the bridal bouquets. “I was so ready to get married, but then I got super emotional right before I walked down the aisle,” remembers Tiffany. “The day was beyond what we ever expected with my dream dress, location and surrounded by family and very, very close friends. Everything was perfect.” The couple enjoyed a two week honeymoon to Rome, Italy along with a Mediterranean cruise to Greece, Turkey and Egypt. “We were able to have the wedding of our dreams and do things just like we wanted. It was amazing,” said Tiffany.

Best Friends In Love
Lauren Wald and Matt King
Lauren and Matt met while working together and quickly realized they were meant to be together forever.

Clockwise (from top left): The cool chic location of Postcard Inn allowed for the decor by MMD Events to be casual and comfortable. Throughout the wedding dĂŠcor, Lauren and Matt incorporated unique and fun ideas including signage that announced their names. Comfortable chairs with pillows were placed throughout the court yard. The trees sparkled with chandeliers and lights hung to create a romantic setting. Into the evening the guests enjoyed a romantic and fun reception. Vintage furniture provided comfortable seating areas for the guests to relax. Old postcards were used for the table seating assignments. A vintage blue suitcase held the wedding programs that also served as a fan. The cake table included a variety of flavors and frostings created by The Cupcake Spot.

Working together does have a few benefits. Lauren and Matt met at the country club where Matt is a golf instructor and Lauren is a fitness professional who specializes in golf. Working with the same clients allowed them to quickly become friends and led to romance. “Right from the start, we were able to talk easily and laugh about everything, which was a great base for friendship,” says Lauren. “We knew pretty quickly that we wanted to get married. Neither of us has ever been able to fully be ourselves with anyone else — we are best friends and we are always having fun.” Lauren grew up in the area and decided that Postcard Inn was the ideal location for their ceremony and reception. “We loved the laid-back feel mixed with the quirky and inventive décor,” recalls Lauren. “We didn’t want a country club (we work there!), and weren’t about to pretend we were “black tie” when we really just wanted everyone to feel comfortable and at home at our event.” The wedding décor included the colors of navy, kelly green and hot pink. MMD Events created the design and decor bringing Lauren’s abstract style preference into a tangible vision. Through the use of color, texture, furniture and lighting, MMD Events brought Lauren’s visions to reality. The reception offered a homestyle meal of pulled pork, tenderloin, mashed potatoes, and caesar salad, which everyone enjoyed including the bride. The day was beautiful and guests danced the night away under the strings of lights and lanterns hung from the trees. The couple recalls that they didn’t want a stressful wedding day. “It should be the best day of our lives,” said Lauren and Matt. The couple played volleyball and enjoyed sitting by the pool with guests all day until it was ceremony time. Before the wedding weekend, Lauren made a trip to Tampa to meet with Priscilla from Destiny and Light for a hair and makeup trial. “I fell in love with the style that she gave me, but the true winning point was how at ease my mom and I felt with her,” said Lauren. “Throughout the process, even from a distance, I felt like I was working with a friend, not a vendor.” On the day of the wedding, Priscilla and two assistants met Lauren at Postcard Inn, and made the bridesmaids feel just as comfortable. Scott and April Patterson from Life’s Highlights shot the photography and video. Lauren was so comfortable with the Pattersons that she said she had to resist the urge to invite them as guests, instead of for photo and video. “As they filmed and took photos, poor April even got pulled onto the dance floor by one of my guests,” Lauren remembers. “The real magic was after the wedding when we received our photos, full video, and highlight video,” said Lauren. “We even got extra dance footage, which was priceless. The highlight video was the coolest I’ve ever seen — in part because it’s mine, and partially because it is so well done.” RJ Vida provided the entertainment and dance music. “He is my age and “gets” what I was looking for, and was able to mix sounds and background music beautifully,” said Lauren. “His music selection was so good that it prompted a dance-off between a groomsman and my coworker — a sight we will never forget.” “We had a truly unique look for our wedding that was unforgettable,” said Lauren. “Our guests also told us that our wedding was one of the most fun, and beautiful, yet welcoming events they have been to.”

Wedding Checklist Congratulations you’re engaged! Wedding bells will be ringing soon, but in the meantime it’s all about the planning. Here’s a helpful 12-month itinerary to make sure your big day goes off without a hitch.
10 to 12 Months This is the period of research and exploring, what kind of wedding do you want? Pretend you are a detective seeking the best of everything: style, venue, honeymoon, the works. ❑ Schedule engagement photos ❑ Mail out engagement announcements ❑ Set a date ❑ Meet clergy, especially if one of you is converting so you can start classes immediately ❑ Start making bride/groom guest list ❑ Decide on a budget ❑ Decide on indoor or outdoor wedding, be sure to keep in mind weather conditions for outdoor weddings and it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan ❑ Begin scouting locations for ceremony, reception and rehearsal dinner. ❑ Begin researching caterers, florists, photographers, musicians and bakers ❑ Make a list with fiancee of honeymoon destinations and songs for your first dance ❑ Decide on members of the wedding party ❑ Begin shopping for your wedding dress
7 to 9 Months Now it’s time to start narrowing things down. In order to have time for the details, it’s important to get some of the big stuff out of the way. ❑ Send engagement announcement to the local paper ❑ Order your wedding dress ❑ Decide on venue ❑ Choose clergy ❑ Choose your colors ❑ Take bridesmaids shopping for their dresses ❑ Take mom shopping for her Mother of the Bride dress ❑ Meet with florist and decide on flowers for venue, wedding party and reception ❑ Meet with caterer to decide on menu and schedule menu tasting ❑ Book photographer ❑ Meet with musicians to discuss play list ❑ Meet with travel agent about honeymoon ❑ Book reception venue and make deposit
4 to 6 Months Ok, take a deep breath and relax, but not too much. Look at all you’ve accomplished; now it’s time for the details. ❑ Finalize menu with caterer ❑ Finalize guest list ❑ Order wedding invitations ❑ Start shopping for wedding rings ❑ Make appointment with jeweler if want to custom design rings ❑ Meet with baker to view and taste cake options ❑ Order bridesmaids’ dresses ❑ Shop for and order fiancée and groomsmen tuxes ❑ Book honeymoon
64
www.TampaBayWed.com
❑ Make sure passports are current if going out of the country
2 to 3 Months Now things are beginning to take form and your dream wedding is unfolding right before your eyes. Just keep focus and have fun. ❑ Order wedding rings ❑ Confirm with florist all flowers for ceremony and reception ❑ Order cake ❑ Register for gifts ❑ Shop and order party favors ❑ Pick song for your first dance ❑ Finalize play list with musicians
4 to 8 Weeks Everything is locked in, your dress is being tailored and everything is ordered. Now is the time to CONFIRM, CONFIRM, CONFIRM. ❑ Mail wedding invitations ❑ Order programs for the ceremony ❑ Go with fiancée to get marriage license ❑ Obtain, fill-out and mail all necessary forms for your name change ❑ Pick up wedding rings and check fit ❑ Final fitting for wedding dress and wedding party ❑ Make appointment with hair and makeup stylist ❑ Make nail appointment ❑ Start shopping for honeymoon clothes ❑ Purchase wedding party gifts ❑ Purchase wedding gift for your fiancée ❑ Pick up your dress and start wearing shoes around the house to ensure comfort on the big day ❑ If traditionalist–make sure have something old, new, borrowed and blue ❑ Plan rehearsal dinner ❑ Pay final payment on reception hall
1 Week Can you hear the wedding bells? That’s right in just one week you’ll go from bride-to-be, to wife! Now just a few minor details before you walk down the aisle into happily ever after. ❑ Confirm with EVERYONE, caterer, photographer, baker, florist to make sure everything is on schedule ❑ Confirm wedding party picked up dresses and tuxes ❑ Get everything packed for honeymoon ❑ Pick up plane or cruise tickets and travel itinerary for honeymoon from travel agent ❑ Hold rehearsal dinner and handout wedding day schedule to wedding party ❑ Take bridesmaids out for brunch and a spa day for the last time as a single gal ❑ Attend wedding rehearsal ❑ Schedule two days for yourself, one for family and one for friends
