There is no denying our homes have taken on new meaning in the last 13 months. While always places of sanctuary and shelter, we had no choice but to reassess our relationships with these habitats while being contained inside them during alert level 4 lockdown. In the months that followed, we may have been less restricted in our movements outside the home, but we were hyper aware that that could – and did – change at any moment, seeing many people choose not to stray too far from their local territory. This close proximity to home has influenced a surge in renovations around New Zealand; from large scale remodels and extensions to lowerlevel licks of paint, appliance upgrades and furnishing replacements. The upcoming Christchurch Home Show pays homage to this phenomenon, with the annual show featuring more exhibitors and seminars than ever before when it takes place on April 16 to 18 at Christchurch Arena. It really is a great opportunity to pick the brains of local experts – and those from further afield – and see how you can make those much-anticipated changes at your place. In a city resplendent with street art, the newest mural adorning the back of Riverside Market rises to the challenge of bringing something new. This depiction of a row of heritage shops is painted onto a ﬂat façade, yet tricks the eyes into seeing a multi-dimensional historical scene.

he project was produced by George Shaw of Oi YOU! and painted in six weeks by local graffiti art collective, DTR Crew - Dcypher, Ikarus, Jacob Yikes & Wongi Wilson. The mural was co-funded by Riverside Market and ChristchurchNZ, and is the largest and most complex ever delivered in the city.

Sarah hopes her book will teach people new, delicious and easy ways to use leftovers and food scraps.

hen an eight-year-old tells you your soup made from leftovers is, “so good you need to do a cookbook” - you know you’re onto something. And so, Christchurch cook Sarah Burtscher’s book, Fridge Cleaner Cooking: Waste Not Want Not, was born. “I don’t think he realises how healthy it is,” laughs Sarah. Growing up on a high-country station near Tekapo, Sarah absorbed her mother’s approach to food which ensured nothing was wasted. “She was of that generation where nothing was wasted, but also being quite remote we just had to make do.” This philosophy has underpinned Sarah’s lifelong career in the food industry. Starting as a waitress at the legendary Dux de Lux as a 15-year-old, she has worked in cafés and restaurants ever since. “I am very much a home cook,” she says. “I’m not professionally trained but I love cooking and have been in the industry since I was at school.” Upon returning from her OE, Sarah bought a café on Victoria Street and later headed up and sold two establishments in Tekapo, too. “I love what food represents, it gets people around a table talking and sharing - sharing food, sharing conversations - and it’s a way to express how you care about people. “I love entertaining. Some people can play music or express themselves in other ways, but I do it by putting food on the table and seeing people enjoy it.” Now living in Christchurch with husband Michael, and children Louis, 15, Phoebe, 12, and Nick, 11, she has spent the last year working on the book which chronicles her food journey - including recipes created over lockdown. “With each recipe in the book there is a personal connection, it reminds me of a family celebration or friends’ get together, its parts of your life in a book, really.” Those recipes chosen for the book include popular items from her cafés,

but the main thread tying it all together is sustainability. Kiwis throw away 157,389 tonnes of food each year, according to international organisation Love Food Hate Waste. That equates to about $1.17billion in perfectly edible food being left to rot, which is not only fiscally wasteful – but produces more than 400,000 tonnes of harmful carbon emissions. Sarah says people are not intentionally throwing away food (and their money), but she hopes to share the art of cooking with leftovers. “I’m hoping people will connect with the sustainability angle,” says Sarah. “I hope it helps people learn how to not waste food and be greener with fridge cleaner.” The recipes in her book are based on the top ten wasted food items in New Zealand (bread, leftovers, oranges and mandarins, apples, bananas, potatoes, poultry, rice, lettuce and beef). And also contains tips for reusing offcuts and scraps. For example, banana peels soaked in water can double as plant feed, aging potatoes can be cut up to bulk up a soup, the remains of jam in a jar can be thrown into a smoothie and cheese scraps can go onto a pizza. Standout recipes include the original endorsed-by-an-eight-year-old fridge cleaner soup, Grain It Up; a Basque Burnt Cheesecake “so delicious you don’t want it in the fridge for long because you will keep going back for it”; the easy to make Fast Ice Cream; and a kid approved blue cheese, spinach and pear calzone. Publishing a cookbook is a feat in itself, but the fact Sarah is dyslexic adds another dimension to the achievement. The book is dedicated to like-minded people. “I’ve always shied away from writing anything down for the fear of writing it wrong or misreading it. “So I am really proud that I [have written a book], and that’s why I dedicated it to all dyslexics, because if I can write a book, anyone can.”

anterbury is well known as a cycle city, producing a growing number of big names in the sport. And Anton Cooper is one of those which stands out. His impressive resume includes winning the U19 World XCO Championship making history as the first Kiwi to win a world championship in cross country cycling; win the U23 UCI Moutain Bike & Trials Championship; hold five straight New Zealand cross country mountain bike national championships (seven overall) and over 60 race wins. Not to mention his recent second place in the hotly contested Christchurch to Akaroa Le Race. Anton has been largely based outside of New Zealand, training from Europe and competing in countless international competitions. “Having a good base in Europe is one of the biggest

parts about have consistently strong performances at the world cups,” he says. So, what happens when someone who is so used to being on the move was forced to press pause with a global pandemic cancelling or postponing races? “It was great! I hadn’t been at home during April, May or June for over 10 years. I really enjoyed laying low for a bit, spending more time with my family and just taking life day by day.” In fact, it’s far from the first time something outside of his control has derailed his sport. In 2016, he missed out on his shot at the Summer Olympics at Rio de Janeiro due to a diagnosis of chronic fatigue. “I had my adenoids removed as they were constantly inflamed and causing me to have a lot of upper respiratory infections.” Now more in tune with how much his body can handle, he’s hungrier than ever and has sights set on the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics in July. A training schedule which involves a lot of time on the bike and in the gym. “I’m on the bike six times a week and in the gym twice a week,” he says. “An average of around 18 hours per week on the bike and about three hours per week in the gym. A big week for me might see me close to 25 hours on the bike and a light week around 14 or 15. It all depends on the intensity of my training and time of year.” While the sport does require a lot of hard work and determination; being the fastest and the fittest isn’t what’s going to get you to the finish line. “Being mentally strong kind of goes hand in hand with that,” says Anton. “You also need a good combination of natural talent and a huge will to succeed and work ethic. “But, purely having that is not enough to become the best in the world. You need a good amount of everything.” And that is something he says he learnt at a young age. The Christchurch Boys’ High School alumnus competed in various sports as a teen and after some encouragement from his parents, he gave competitive mountain biking a go. “From there I climbed through the national ranks and then went on to compete internationally.” There’s not many teens who had to balance NCEA with a professional sporting career! “My parents were the ones who fought hard to create opportunities for me to succeed and I had a lot of support from generous sponsors and financial backing from some very kind people along the way,” he says.

There is plenty of fun to be had at home. From baking to playing games, doing puzzles and getting creative with arts and crafts – the options are as endless as your child’s imagination. Why not build a hut to watch a movie in, turn the recycling into a new invention or get messy with some paint? If you’re stuck for ideas, Pinterest has you well and truly covered!

SHARING THE LOVE

Why not teach your child about community by signing up to volunteer at local organisations – this could be helping out at an animal shelter, cleaning up at an early childcare centre or park, or simply helping out neighbours with household chores and tasks. This not only keeps them busy, but gives them the gift of giving back, too.

Arrange play dates for your kids, and host their friends in return. This way, you can share the childcare with other parents, while also outsourcing the entertainment to the littlies themselves. Kids can play for hours, using just their imaginations – so with their powers combined, they have the fun all covered off!

What’s breast for you? If you’ve recently been thinking about getting a breast reduction, it’s important to do your research to ﬁnd the best - or breast - option for you. Metropol catches up with Dr Grant Bellaney from Encorė Cosmetic Clinic, to discuss breast reduction by Tumescent Liposuction.

What are the ‘breast’ reduction options?

Either the breast reduction by Tumescent Liposuction (BRTL) performed by Dermatological surgeons such as Dr Bellaney, or the breast reduction by surgery (SBR) typically performed by general or plastic surgeons.

Method Heat a large pot over medium heat with oil. Add bacon and chorizo, cook until sausages turn golden brown. Add the onions and cook until softened. Add celery, green and red capsicums and garlic. Cook for another five minutes, stirring occasionally. Add rice, turmeric, cayenne, and bay leaf and stir continuously for one minute. Add the ½ cup wine, tomatoes and chicken stock. Increase heat to high and bring the liquid to a boil. Reduce to low heat, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.

While the rice is cooking, season the prawns and squid with salt and pepper, and remaining wine. After the rice has simmered, fold in the prawns and squid. Cover again, continue to cook over low heat for another five minutes until prawns and squid have just cooked through. Turn off the heat, keep the lid on to let everything rest for five minutes. Fluff the jambalaya with a fork, garnish with parsley and serve with toasted garlic bread.

While the Easter holiday means different things to everyone, there’s no doubt the long weekend as we know it is about indulging with loved ones. So, Metropol has gone on an Easter egg hunt for the chocolatey cocktails to try this long weekend.

SHOOT THE EGG, NOT THE BUNNY

A DREAMY CHOCOLATINI

HOT AND CROSSED

The ultimate adult chocolate egg is here, thanks to culinary writer Sara McCleary’s Easter egg shots. All you need is 30ml Kahlúa, 30ml vodka, 30ml Irish cream liqueur, 30ml full cream milk, one cup of ice. Blend ingredients until smooth and serve immediately in hollow Easter eggs with the tops sliced off.

Put that chocolatey spin on a cocktail classic. Add 60ml vanilla vodka and 30ml crème de cacao into a cocktail shaker half filled with ice. Shake in a Bond-like fashion (not stirred) and serve in a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an Easter egg, and “salt” the rim with sugar and cinnamon (or chilli for an extra kick).

If you’re not so chocolate inclined, try a tipple inspired by the other Easter treat, a hot cross bun. Shake 40ml spiced gin, 15ml cinnamon and saffron spiced syrup, 60ml pressed apple and a lemon twist together. Pour into a martini or rock glass, leaving the lemon twist in, and garnish with star anise.

Quiche, whether served hot or room temperature, is a versatile vessel for abundant autumnal ﬁllings. Packed for a picnic, prepared for a party or famished family, local seasonal ingredients come alive when encased in a ﬂaky or buttery shell.

ith origins in Germany and France, it’s the Kiwi-as ingredients that have revitalised the classic quiche. Think a juxtaposition of at least three, for texture and taste, with these autumnal pairing partners. Butternut pumpkin, sage or fennel, with roasted pinenuts or hazelnuts, are synonymous with falling leaves. Ripened pears are eagerly awaited this time of year. A local blue cheese becomes their ultimate bed partner atop pastry sheets and toasted walnuts complete the romance. Whether you call them zucchini or courgettes, they make a fine filler in an autumn quiche. Mild in taste, yet adding zing with the likes of feta, mint, parmesan, and sweet little cherry tomatoes. Autumn hails the arrival of foraged fungi, whether plucked from the woodlands, farmers markets or local deli. Mealy field mushrooms, Italian porcini, paler-fleshed delicate oyster mushrooms, and meaty shiitake all add their magic. Quiches are a wonderful way to sneak in the health benefits of April’s flourishing super greens, such as kale, parsley or even nasturtium leaves. And laden with the piquancy of local cheeses, they will rival the South of France - banishing any preconception of eggy blandness. Even the burgeoning vegan versions are divine. Go generous on fillings and flavours. Aotearoa’s autumn harvest is abundant. And thanks to the inspirations of our artisan foodies, a quiche is an epicurean open book to go wild with.

From its new home on candy-coloured New Regent Street, the local favourite’s intriguing and delectable menu compliments its playful and fun interiors, and extensive drink selection.

hen the popular bar began to outgrow its former Victoria Street home, Luke Dawkins, moved the operation to iconic New Regent Street with his business partner, Brett Giddens, and transformed it into a hospitality hot spot! Spread across two storeys, marshmallow pink and forest green walls lead from room to plantfilled room. Through each arched doorway lies another seating area; a pink leather booth with a matching fringed light hanging above; low and curvy green velvet benches and pouffes; a marble topped bar with velvet stools, and sunny outdoor picnic tables.

“We want to give an experience and help people make memories,” says Luke. “We’ve tried to create a space where people feel super relaxed and have a nice time with nice food and nice drinks.” And the experimental yet well thought out, seasonal menu certainly reflects this aim. Head chef Jackson Mehlhopt selects ingredients not only for the impact on the plate, but for their impact on the environment. “We have some amazing produce and local suppliers we work with,” he says. “All of the fish we have is Gravity Fishing from Bluff. It is long line or spear-caught to order by the fisherman,

Nate, and everything is delivered the next day. “He catches only what is in season, which guarantees that there is no overfishing but also that the fish is guaranteed to be used.” This results in fresh, sustainably caught Albacore tuna, native blackfoot paua, deepsea scampi appearing on Gin Gin’s menu. “A lot of our food matches with gin,” says Luke. “A lot of our gin reflects the ocean, with sea kelp gin from Scotland, and Dancing Sands from Golden Bay uses sea kelp, too.” Jackson uses Black Origin Wagyu, which combines ancient Japanese breeding genetics and techniques with New Zealand’s incredible grass, grain, water and air. “The combination of traditional techniques used to raise the beef and so much care being taken to ensure they get the right nutrition, combined with New Zealand grain and New Zealand pastures, it creates a really unique to New Zealand product that we haven’t necessarily seen before,” says Jackson. While the ingredients might sound exotic and intrepid, the dishes are not intimidating. “The menu is approachable,” says Luke. “It’s not too out there or gastronomic, we want people to feel like they are trying something new, but we’re not pretentious or intimidating about it.” In the kitchen, the carefully selected ingredients are transformed into seasonal dishes using zero waste principles. “Zero waste means maximising the product and giving the product the most respect we can,” says Jackson. For example, beautiful stocks are created from leftovers likes fish heads and bones, which is in turn used for sauces. Foraged flowers and herbs are used for garnishes, and in-house fermentation makes perfect pickles. The result? A beautifully unique seasonal

menu which, for autumn, features sharing plates and standalone mains like scampi donuts, burrata, fried paua bites, red wine poached octopus, hand stretched pizzas and a sweet Weet-Bix slice. When it comes to a drink match, options really do seem endless. Over 120 gins from every corner of the world are complemented by local tap beers and a wine list peppered with the best of

North Canterbury drops, as well as those from farther afield, and its own house red, too. The gin renaissance of recent years means Gin Gin’s offerings are popular with a wide demographic, something Luke attributes to what started as a pop up concept in 2018, becoming a now permanent fixture in the city.

Ingredients 4 hot cross buns, cutting tops from bottoms 50g butter, softened ½ cup chocolate chips/leftover chocolate Easter Eggs (yeah right!) 4 eggs 2 egg yolks (save your whites) 60g caster sugar 250ml milk 350ml cream Icing sugar for dusting

Method 1

Preheat the oven to bake 180C

Roughly coat the hot cross buns with the softened butter, I use my fingers to smear it over.

Place the bottom half of the hot cross buns in the dish, squishing them in, snug is best.

Scatter most of the chocolate over them, then put the tops on with the rest of the chocolate scattered over the top.

Whisk the eggs, yolks and caster sugar together, then add the milk and cream, mix, then pour over the buns. Wait for about 10-minutes for it to settle.

Pop in oven for 20-minutes, or until tops are browned.

Take out, cover with foil (recycled if possible) and put back in oven for another 20-minutes: you are making a custard as such, and it should be set.

Washing up on produce As tempting as it may be to bite into a freshly bought apple straight from the bag, it’s long been known produce should be rinsed before consumption. But, just how much washing is required?

isible dirt on your potatoes, the thought of all the hands that have touched your tomatoes and the various sprays used for growing healthy, delicious produce – the reasons for washing before eating seem obvious. While New Zealand’s strict food safety rules ensure our produce is safe to eat, if you’re not convinced running under water alone will get your goods quite clean enough – you may wish to consider a fruit and vege wash. These can be purchased at the supermarket, perhaps at the same time you stock up on fresh fruit and veges, or, you can channel Martha Stewart and make your own at home. Most recipes for a homemade fruit and vege wash use one

cup of vinegar and three cups of water in a spray bottle with 1 Tbsp of lemon juice. Or, 1 Tbsp of lemon juice and baking soda with one cup of water. Spray fruit and veges, rinse under cold water, using a soft bristled scrubbing brush to remove any dirt and dry off with paper towels. For extra Martha points, do this before loading the goods into the fridge and fruit bowl. For leafy greens, wait until just before you plan to use them as extra moisture can speed up decay. Fill a bowl with one cup of vinegar to four parts water and 1 tsp of salt, add the greens and let soak for five minutes. Rinse thoroughly and dry using a paper towel or the salad spinner.

So how can we expect to see kelp on our plates? Pundits suggest looking out for kimchi made from kelp, a kelp cube for your next smoothie, kelp-based broths and soups, and even kelp-centric salsas. And, as kelp becomes more mainstream, who knows what form this functional food may take.

Zesty Ziggurat If you have a long span of wall, such as in an open plan living/dining room or hallway, you might be at a loss for how to make it interesting. While adding artwork is one option, it could be difficult to find enough pieces – or the right mix of pieces – to fill the space and also create the right balance.

nother option is to add tongue-and-groove panelling or wainscotting, which have both recently resurfaced as trends. Be it timber or MDF, this option adds to the natural shape of a room, and it can even help protect your walls from the wear and tear that comes with more time spent indoors. However, traditional wainscotting can be pricey and time consuming to install. Plus, the look might not be the right fit for newer homes, and being sensitive to the period of your home is key when you’re looking to make changes to your interior. One idea is to put a unique and contemporary twist on it by

creating ‘reversed’ panelling. In this look, the often ornate nature of wainscotting has been pared down and simplified to straight squared edges, and elements that would normally be inset have been given protruding dimension. The walls and panelling are painted in Resene Ziggurat, a soft and warm blue with a subtle grey undertone, and floor in Resene Mountain Mist, a soft cloudy grey. However, you could choose to paint your panelling in a contrasting colour. To finish the look, layer in some other tonal Resene blues and greys, with painted plant pots, bowls and trays.

Stone in the home is a design trend that just won’t quit. Inside and out, the natural material projects character, opulence and moodiness which is starting to go beyond benchtops and bathroom tiling.

nterior experts are predicting stone – and stone-look - to be big in home design this year, as the appeal of biophilic design (things which imitate nature) and textured materials continues to take hold. Stone is popularly used in kitchens and bathrooms, for counter tops and floor and wall tiling. Marble and granite are especially prevalent, as the dense and hardwearing materials resist stains, withstand heat and refuse to lose lustre over time. However, the material is also starting to be used in flooring in living areas – and especially to seamlessly integrate indoor and outdoor living spaces. Stone splashbacks, basins and sinks are also having a moment, as are stone homewares like serving and ornamental plates, vases, ornaments and candleholders. Outside, stone is of course universally applied as paving, or when broken up, as garden fill. Some designers are even creating modern takes on mosaic designs by breaking up slabs and laying the pieces in haphazard patterns. Not only does stone look fantastic, but according to the psychology of interior design (which looks at how our subconscious reacts to our surroundings), experts say stone represents stability. Moving from seaside to city was smooth sailing for a retired Christchurch couple, who had DJ Hewitt Builders at the helm the whole way through. When Marilyn and Neville Tiller’s Redcliffs home was earthquake damaged, Daryl Hewitt was the well-respected builder chosen to create their sanctuary on Carlton Mill Road. “His work was perfection, the mastermind of building!”, says Marilyn.“Daryl showed us ideas for various design styles, ideal for the chosen site. The brief was for simple and easy living for the two-bedroom home, on one level with access to decks on all sides. “Neville loved looking out at the

boats on the estuary, but now it’s the ducks on the river. He says he’s now the Mayor of the Avon!” Daryl would always listen to us and then deliver and keep us informed of the progress. With attention to detail, he never forgot an item. Neville wanted an outdoor shower, and we got it. Daryl’s wife and interior consultant Tara was really good, she shared so much of her knowledge and advice. Marilyn acknowledged all the wonderful consultants and subtrades that were fully managed throughout the project. “The site was always left tidy. Everything was just top notch. He had the whole process covered – from A to Z.” “The Hewitts have made the whole process very, very simple for us. We have had no problems. I can’t praise them enough. We are very proud and happy to be in a DJ Hewitt home, now we are experiencing the joy of living here.”

Every week in our auction rooms I get to see a huge range of emotions playing out. I’m often very moved by the drama that a competitive process can create for attendees and my heart goes out to them. There are tears about missing a muchwanted but very sought-after property, there’s elation at successfully purchasing, there’s a genuine pride at finally getting on the property ladder and, for some parents, there’s the realisation that without them the purchase would not have been possible. These are tears that I can definitely relate to. It seems more and more parents are seeing withdrawals from the trusty, rusty or even crusty ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ and as we personally get a little bit nearer to that time ourselves, I thought I’d take a closer look. Obtaining funds from family is not a new phenomenon, but it is a very important one for some first-home buyers – and with lofty deposits often required, it can involve big numbers. It’s essential parents are aware of this and that’s why we will often see parents not just on auction day but throughout the whole process, including open home attendances, and second and third visits. Being part of a very close family, I imagine that I’d want to do this as well and whilst some real estate professionals struggle with large family viewings – and

even larger post-visit family debates – best you get used to it! During my research, I’ve also discovered that providing funds is not as straightforward as it once was. Originally the main means of assisting were, firstly, contributing to the deposit, to a level the lender was happy with, and, secondly, supplementing additional funds to ensure the debt-servicing criteria were met. It’s often referred to as a guarantee. This second method needs to be carefully thought through by parents, as a default by their son or daughter (and much as we don’t like to imagine it, this can happen) could see them shouldering the responsibility for the loan themselves. This can become extremely uncomfortable, especially if they have their own financial commitments and pending retirement. To address this, there have been changes to the legislation deeming that any and all guarantors to a loan need to demonstrate the ability to meet the required loan payments to avoid the worst from happening. As much as we all love our families, if you are considering helping in this particular way it’s essential to get independent advice. So, what are these purchasers buying? It seems they are trying everything.

First-home buyers with limited budgets are thinking outside the square and in some cases the market is giving them a robust education in looking at properties that buyers might have had the luxury of excluding in the past. Varied locations, new subdivisions made infinitely more desirable due to improved motorway access, new schools and communities, are all hugely popular. We are also encountering parents looking on behalf of overseas offspring with British Pounds and American Dollars burning a hole in their pockets and those budgets are extraordinary when compared with what was once considered necessary for making a purchase in our local market. So much of what we achieve as human beings relates to how we have helped or been helped by others, and I imagine one day I’ll be in an auction room helping one of our family members make a withdrawal from the trusty bank of Mum and Dad too! So, to all those parents in the same position, well done, without you a whole generation wouldn’t get to enjoy what we thought of as a right – and that’s home ownership.

April is when autumn really gets going. The days are noticeably shorter and night temperatures cooler, so we need to be preparing the garden for winter. Here are Metropol’s tips for what to focus on in your mid-autumn garden.

Spring bulbs may still be planted now, if space is lacking plant them in containers and pack them in. Bulbs in pots can be planted much closer than those in the garden to achieve a full display when flowering.

Tomato plants will be getting to the end of their season so remove the old plants and dispose of the vines especially if they have had any disease. Best not to compost them. Dig potatoes if the ground is likely to get water-logged and store them in a cool dark place.

Fallen leaves literally smother lawns, preventing light and oxygen from penetrating. If you don’t want patchy lawns this spring, collect the leaves and pop them in your compost bin or in a separate bin to make leaf mould.

Flowering and fruity

In general

Cut back perennials. Prune berry fruits. Do clean up spraying on fruit trees so that any pest or disease will not be carried over to the next season. Any frost tender plants need to be moved inside if in containers or else covered for protection once the harder frosts start.

It is important to cut back any over-hanging branches on trees or shrubs near pathways and to treat paths for moss so that we are safe when the weather is wet and cold.

Over a year after the first cases of Covid-19 hit our shores, we continue to see considerable strain on our global supply chain, which could have significant long-term repercussions for both businesses and consumers.

For as long as I can remember, the need to improve the interface between education and the workplace has been an issue. How can we better equip those in education to be as well prepared as possible for life beyond the classroom?

he concern around freight is a “perfect storm” of supply chain challenges. The global surge in demand for goods teamed with factory supply issues has seen shipping lines changing tack – putting containers geographically out of balance around the world. National ports too are struggling with issues around skills shortages and infrastructure. This has caused cargo operators to re-think their services to Aotearoa. So how does this impact us? The products we see on shop shelves and the price we pay for them; our agriculture, manufacturing and construction sectors, and exporters who need certainty around delivery. It also

puts strain on the transport industry – costing everybody more to do the same job. That increase will need to be passed on to the consumer. As a small nation reliant on international trade for our way of life and to help turn the cogs of our economy, we need to ensure everything is being done to provide a long-term, resilient supply network. The key will be taking a more collaborative approach between businesses and government to ensure our location doesn’t put us in the too hard basket, impacting our country’s trade competitiveness and consumers’ pockets long-term if left unchecked.

According to Boston Consulting Group, for every $1 of funding, female founded start-ups generated an additional 78 cents versus the 31 cents of their male start-up founders. Furthermore, 2020 was the year of female unicorns (billion dollar start-ups) achieving a new record of 21 female founded start-ups compared to only four in 2013. At Ministry of Awesome, we are seeing increasing numbers of female founders with side hustles and bold ambition to take on the world. This is an excellent sign for the future of Aotearoa.

experience over the past decade that we need to plan for the unexpected. We have established a good track record of building on what we know and adapting to challenges we face. In many respects we are a new city with new infrastructure and community facilities that exceed what a city our size would expect. That is the legacy of investment decisions made in the wake of a crisis. The legacy of the investment in relationships has also paid off. Don’t let the dream vanish down the drain

hen it comes to buying or selling a home, drains are not necessarily something many of us consider. However, as Josh Mackey, owner of MHR Drainage, explains—damaged drains are a constant problem for both buyers and sellers in the greater Christchurch area. “Following the earthquakes, we were flat out doing emergency drainage repairs,” he says. “These repairs — which were only ever designed to be temporary — may well be failing now. Combine this with the fact that thousands of homes in Christchurch still have undiagnosed problems with drains, creates a big red flag for buyers. “Our team carry out diagnostic tests daily and about half the homes we visit show earthquake related damage to the drains.” Josh points out there is good news: “Damaged drains are covered by the EQC, even if your 2010 or 2011 claim has been settled. Plus, there is no cut-off date for lodging a claim relating to drainage. “So, the best solution for vendors is to have an inspection done prior to listing your home on the market. Then if there are problems these can be rectified through the EQC system.
