Stadium green light Arguably some of the best news this month was the Christchurch City Council’s vote to proceed with the construction of the multi-use stadium. The majority of councillors voted in favour of the project with only three against it. NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019
This is great news for Christchurch and the wider region, with the new arena certain to add to the many world-class attractions it already has. The business community had previously indicated its overwhelming support for constructing the stadium. The Quarterly Canterbury Business Survey conducted by the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce indicated that 90.4 percent of businesses within the region are in favour of completing the construction of the stadium. Additonally a massive 86.5 percent of businesses based outside of the Christchurch City Council boundary are

supportive of their local councils making a financial contribution. Christchurch City Council (CCC) voted 13-3 to sign a fixedprice $683 million contract to build the multi-use arena, already named Te Kaha. The price means the CCC will have to invest an extra $150m, a cost that will be recouped through a rates increase. Christchurch has not had a world-class stadium for more than a decade. Its construction will go a long way towards rebuilding the city’s reputation as the “sporting capital of New Zealand”, and also as a top class entertainment venue. It will cost ratepayers more, but the benefits will be reaped far into the future.

BACK TOGE TH ER AGAIN B orn right here in Christchurch, Julia Deans was always destined for a creative life, with her father Paul Deans the well-known sculptor, and grandfather Austen Deans a painter. But it was music that would steal Julia’s heart. She was given her first guitar at age 15 and the rest is history. After a move to Wellington in the 1990s, Julia soon joined Fur Patrol, which would go on to become one of the most wellknown New Zealand bands of the early 2000s. Julia made her mark in the music industry with her killer vocals, supercool and effortless guitar style and deep, intuitive lyrics. She was and still is a musical force to be reckoned with. And now, after having to reschedule three

times due to the pandemic, Fur Patrol is finally getting back together to celebrate the 21st birthday of their much-loved record, PET. Julia will be joined by bandmates Simon Braxton (drums) and Andrew Bain (bass). The tour will be visiting Christchurch, as well as Dunedin, Nelson, Napier, Mount Maunganui, Auckland, and Wellington. Looking back, her memories of the years performing with the band were some of the best. A particular favourite stands out. “Standing on stage at the Kings Arms (RIP) with Simon and Andrew, surrounded by sound, simply lost in the music with my band brothers.” It is this exact feeling Julia can’t wait to replicate on the upcoming tour. Since her Fur Patrol days, Julia has
clocked up a long list of musical projects, collaborating with other Kiwis including The Adults, SJD, and Neil Finn. She has performed in an impressive array of art festival shows paying tribute to the likes of Jacques Brel, Joni Mitchell, and Shakespeare, as well as releasing her solo albums Modern Fables and We Light Fire. Julia is looking forward to the upcoming tour not just to be back on stage with her bandmates, but to also visit many of her favourite places around the country. She’s most excited to visit “everywhere!” and wishes they could make the tour even bigger than it already is. “It’s been such a long time since we’ve done any shows, let alone an actual tour, and we seriously wish we could be doing more. We’ve had so many people leaving sad emojis and the names of their towns
one on one Fondly known as the talented front woman for Fur Patrol, Julia Deans is getting the band back together for a reunion tour this August. Georgia Summerton catches up with the rock and roll star ahead of the tour.
“It’s been such a long time since we’ve done any shows... we seriously wish we could be doing more. We’ve had so many people leaving sad emojis in our social media feeds... but we only have so much time.”
in our social media feeds, but we only have so much time.” Getting prepared to tour and play multiple shows to crowds of people is a mix of excited and nervous emotions. Even more so after going through the last few years of not being able to perform or
travel, Julia explains. “It’s been strange, stressful, and kind of relaxing at times. After two years of having very little to do, suddenly having lots going on is challenging – my time management has never been particularly great, and it’s become even worse following lockdowns! I am a work in progress.” With more time away from performing over the last few years, Julia found herself picking up a new hobby. “I took up paddleboarding a few years ago. I just love being on the water, and I’m not rich enough to own a boat, haha.” Fans of Fur Patrol will be familiar with all of the hits and looking forward to seeing them live once again. Favourites include Lydia, Andrew (I’m Sorry), Pet, Spinning a Line, and Collider. As for Julia’s
favourite to perform? It’s a tough call to make… “That’s a bit like asking someone to name their favourite child, but yes. Well, actually, there are a few. There’s an obscure song called “Counting Upside Down” that’s been floating around since “Pet” days. It’s frenetic and at times chaotic, but super tight – I just love the rhythm and energy of it, and it’s one of those songs that always takes people by surprise when it ends. “And of course, anything that people sing along with. That’s like the greatest compliment when people know the words to your songs.” There is no doubt the crowds will be singing along, as fans have patiently waited for the time they would see this iconic band back on stage. A mural showing a colourful, abstract journey of growth and recovery is now on show at Ōtautahi’s child and youth mental health outpatient unit, at The Princess Margaret Hospital in Cashmere.
T
he mural, titled The Pōhutukawa Pathway, was designed by teenage Christchurch artist Ella Ward, and was unveiled by her in conjunction with mental health advocate and Westpac ambassador Sir John Kirwan, during his visit last month. Ella is passionate about mental health and youth, and having seen the outpatient facilities where local young people are treated, she knew just how much they needed uplifting. “They [unit rooms] are dark and unwelcoming, but I’m hoping my design and injection of colour will go some way towards improving that and making our young people feel valued and supported through their mental health journey,” says Ella. Prior to the mural, her largest artwork was A3, so to go from that to a 3.6 by 2.4 metre mural was a little overwhelming,
she says, adding that being mentored by mural artist Kyla Kuzniarski was a huge help. “Painting this mural every day for three weeks has been such an incredible experience and seeing it installed is really special. I hope that for those who use this facility, whether they are staff, patients or someone else, that they can get enjoyment from its colour, patterns and its story of growth,” says Ella. Her mural features two different pathways that lead to an abstract version of the sun. “My design shows the concept of growth depicted through leaves, while I’ve included elements of New Zealand nature as nature is calming and it relates to our unique culture and identity. “The journey to mental wellness isn’t one-dimensional. Through this artwork I’ve tried to visually show that while there may be ups and downs during the journey to wellness, we can reach sunshine at the end,” she adds.

Christchurch desperately needs a modern outpatient facility for child and youth mental health outpatients to replace the outdated facilities at The Princess Margaret Hospital, and Hillmorton. Māia Health Foundation is raising $6 million towards a modern, fit-for-purpose facility, which is due to open late next year. Ella’s mural will be relocated there once the facility is complete.

TAP DANCE TO THE TOP In a cut-throat New Zealand entertainment industry, emerging young Christchurch performer Bayley Graham has found himself in the spotlight, thanks to hard work and dedication. The tap-dancing talent chats exclusively with Metropol writer Nina Tucker about his recent win on the New Zealand talent show ‘60 Seconds’, what tap dance means to him, and the challenges of the entertainment industry. 12 July 21, 2022 Metropol
A
s a six-year-old, Bayley Graham experienced his first dose of tapdancing through a televised talent competition. It caught his attention and became a dream he wanted to pursue. “As a young boy, making a bunch of noise sounded like a great time.” Bayley joined a tap-dancing studio and watched his love for tap prosper. After tapping his way to the win in 60 Seconds, Bayley now has a platform to showcase his skills nationwide. The show, where each act had only one minute to impress the audience and judges, exhibited New Zealand’s latest talents. The journey was hectic for Bayley. “There were plenty of late sleepless nights rehearsing and perfecting my acts so that I could show off my personality as well as my tapping talent.” While Bayley honed his routines, countless other acts did the same, all in a bid to win the grand prize. With the ability to feed energy off the crowd in 60 seconds as New Zealand returned to somewhat normal regulations, Bayley hoped to “re-programme the general public on their perception of tap dance” with his acts, while paying homage to those great tap dancers before him. Each performance welcomed smiles, including his own. “It's a way to communicate with people and give them an escape from mundane, everyday life. Making music with my feet just makes me happy.” Since winning the show, Bayley has been entertaining across the country, including performing at his first sold-out show at the Nelson Fringe Festival, ‘Rhythm Is My Business’. While the public love to be entertained, the small performing-arts scene in New Zealand makes a stable income in entertainment difficult. “The chance of making an impact as a performer is a challenge especially when you are competing for attention with a virus.” Bayley continues to recreate the landscape of tap dancing in New Zealand. Studying graphic design by day to provide stability during uncertain times, Bayley continues to envision new ways to wow the New Zealand public. Metropol July 21, 2022 13

he newest foodie adventure is the brainchild of Ex NZ Masterchef finalist and renowned Chef Fiona Read and her husband Chris. They recently launched their cooking school, Hāpuku Kitchen in stunning Kaikōura, focusing on getting people to reconnect to the kitchen and celebrating the abundant larder of natural produce sourced from the wild Kaikōura coast. Based in their home and specially designed kitchen, they are promising
culinary adventures that celebrate the season. They enable guests to have a hands-on experience, foraging in the garden for fruit and vegetables, collecting the eggs and feeding the cows and pigs all before going back into the kitchen to learn the tricks and techniques in the creation of the dishes that day. Their cooking classes are small and hands-on which enables them to host and provide guidance to each and every guest. These culinary experiences are for cooks of all levels.

FABULOUS
fishing EXPERIENCE
Few places can boast of such natural wonders as Kaikōura, and the adventure does not stop on dry land.
Y
ou may have heard about the ocean activities that abound in Kaikōura, and fishing charters sit firmly on that list. A morning with Top Catch Fishing Charters will be an unforgettable experience during your visit, according to its many satisfied customers. Heading out at sunrise makes for calmer waters and passage to the cray pots in the shallows. Pull up your first catch of the day as the sun peeks over the horizon, and start collecting your dinner early.
Crayfish are famous in this town, and Malcolm knows how to cook one, so grab some recipe ideas on board. Cast your line and wait for the local blue cod and perch to take the bait. Any catch is filleted on board, meaning you can leave with your dinner for the next night or two or three! Or, if you feel like dropping into Coopers Catch, the team will cook your fish to perfection, accompanied by some of the best chips in town. Kaikōura is peppered with fishing charter
companies. Depending on the size of your group, the team at Kaikōura Fishing Tours & Charters and The Rodfather will be happy to take you out. Did you know that the English translation for Kaikōura is “to eat crayfish”? If you’re not crazy for crays, Kaikōura is also home to many cafes, restaurants and eateries offering a wide assortment of other delicious foods, especially those sourced directly from the ocean. Take time out. Explore, eat and relax in style and comfort in Kaikōura.

Likeminded and agile
Modern workplaces have evolved significantly during the past three years, catering for different work styles, hours and needs. Enter the hybrid – or agile – workplace.
E
ssentially these digitally enhanced spaces support hybrid workforces and also new workstyles. “Many businesses are grappling with solutions to cater for flexible working environments,” explains Duane Smithson, Ricoh NZ Christchurch branch manager. “To support those environments, today’s workplace demands require a new approach to organising and right-sizing business real estate, whether you need to bring everyone back or implement a hybrid
programme.” At Ricoh, we design, configure and roll-out your digital workspaces, enabling your teams to collaborate effectively and get more out of their day, wherever they work. “Our customers understand a modern, flexible working environment increases staff productivity and satisfaction whilst making it easier to engage with customers remotely using Microsoft Teams and Zoom technology,” he added. Reach out to Duane to improve your agile workspace.
www.ricoh.co.nz WHY GO AGILE? Recent research showed that many businesses globally are using as little as 20 percent of their office space, now that more people are remote working. Approximately 64 percent of business premises were found to be the wrong size, or not designed efficiently, indicating huge inefficiencies in use and related costs. A separate survey, by a commercial real estate firm, found 85 percent of the traditional office workforce wanted to return to the office for between two and five days a week, with the ability to work remotely.

Preparing your property
Our homes are individual, an expression of who we are and how we love to live. They’re a genuine manifestation of our lives, our families, our friends and our lifestyles. Our homes are a place for us to cocoon, feel safe and a place to articulate our personalities.
T
he memorable homes aren’t cookie cutter designs, bland replicas of each other. Instead, they’re evolving spaces that focus on the happiness of the inhabitants, meeting their needs and enriching their lives, turning a house into a home. It’s this unique sense of individuality that real estate agent, Kathryn Picton-Warlow, is instinctively drawn to, particularly the attributes and selling points that make a property enticing to potential buyers. More so, she believes it’s an eye for all aspects of a property that separates the top agents from the rest, ensuring the home stands out to achieve premium house sales. There’s an expression that ‘Clutter Eats Capital’, often a challenging concept for homeowners preparing their property for sale. Encouraged to declutter, over-purging can reduce homes to an uninteresting shell. However, failing to effectively declutter can mean your home’s strongest aspects are secreted behind a host of personal belongings. Kathryn is categorical that a tactfully honest approach is the only way forward and an effective agent will have
vision and clarity that vendors can trust, ensuring your home appeals to the widest range of buyers. Likewise, a property needs to be clean, deeply clean, and a candid agent will support you to see your home as a potential buyer might. Time taken to ensure your home is looking its best during set up will allow you to gain the most from your marketing campaign.
“I care about what I do and I pride myself on achieving exceptional results.” Largely, an exceptional sale is achieved through planning and preparation, not luck, and your marketing plan is paramount to achieving premium results. Kathryn says every home needs to be represented and marketed wisely with vision and clarity. A talented real estate agent will possess enhanced knowledge of the market, probing where your marketing budget is best spent and assessing whether you are spending your money wisely.
Just as our homes are individual, so too are our real estate agents and an experienced agent who is invested in the process, not just the outcome, will ensure the best conclusion. For Kathryn, it comes down to diligence and assiduousness. “I care about what I do and I pride myself on achieving exceptional results. “For many people, navigating the sale process can be an emotional process, one fraught with expectations and hearsay. However, pragmatic planning with an informed agent who genuinely cares will negate the grey areas, ensuring you enter the process with refined knowledge and a property that celebrates its unique attributes.”

An often-overlooked accessory, adding a belt is the fastest way to pull together basic pieces or quickly elevate a casual outfit. Belts can help accentuate your figure, add colour or be a full statement piece. Here are a few ways to use a belt that will add a little more flair to your outfit.
DEFINE
TUCK
Try a belt over loose dresses or tops. Belts don’t just need to go through the loops on your pants, but they can also just sit on your waist to give greater definition to your silhouette or add a pop of colour to your outfit.
Belts don’t need to be visible to add impact to an outfit. Place a thin belt around your waist, over a sweater or jumper, and gently pull some of the material up and over the belt. It will hang over slightly, covering the belt and instantly creating shape.
MATCHING
STATEMENT
Belts are a fabulous way to bring an outfit together using colour, material, or patterns. Match your belt to another element of your outfit, such as your handbag or jewellery.
A statement belt, something with a large buckle or interesting design accent, can serve as a centrepiece for your outfit. It can add personality and fun to an otherwise plain outfit.

veryone is different, so it is never a one product fits all. You may notice some skin care products are oil-based and others water-based. So what’s the big difference, and what’s best? Let’s break it down. WATER-BASED FORMULAS The active ingredients in these formulas are water-soluble and are best known for their featherlight, ‘barely-there’ texture. With these lightweight formulas, the finish almost disappears on your face. This means that once applied, you’ll be left with a shine-free, nongreasy finish. They usually deliver good hydration but also absorb quickly, with no residue. When it comes to skin types, waterbased formulas will often be ideal for oily, combination, or teen skin types, because of their shine-free finish. Dehydrated skin types may also enjoy water-based face cream formulas because they offer a good dose of hydration.

oil-based skin care OIL-BASED FORMULAS These formulas contain active ingredients that are oil-soluble. And while your water-based products are light, an oilbased formula is rich and will feel heavier on the skin. The finish of an oil-based formula also tends to be more glowy and dewy.
This makes them ideal for anyone who wants their skin care to give them a big boost of radiance. When it comes to skin types, oil-based formulas will often be good for drier skin types, ageing skin, or anyone who enjoys the feeling of a richer moisturiser.

luscious lock in
We all want healthy, luscious hair, and winter can be especially damaging on our locks. Here are a few tips from the experts at Lush on how to beat the cold and maintain beautiful hair all winter. LET YOUR HAIR DOWN A major key to ensuring minimal damage to your hair this winter is restraining from the use of heat. From straighteners to hair dryers, any heat on your hair can be damaging. For better hair health, try letting your hair air dry this winter, an easy way to avoid unnecessary heat. Worried about frizz and flyaways? Try a moisturising product to help style and shape while also locking in hydration.
SCALPS NEED LOVE TOO We often forget that great hair starts at the roots. In times when our hair and scalp starts to dry, turn to a scalp nourishing shampoo. Lush recommend their Wasabi Shan Kui shampoo. A bold blend of stimulating herbs, horseradish and wasabi exfoliates and invigorates the scalp leaving you with healthy hair, and happy scalps.
WASH LESS REGULARLY The longer you leave in between washes, the better. In winter with conditions doing a number on our locks, excess build-up of natural oils gives hair better protection. If you wash everyday, try slowly extending the amount of days between washes by one, then eventually two, then three days. Your hair might take a little while to get used to the change.
GREAT HAIR WITH ONE CONDITION As the weather starts to cool down, we know our hair becomes more vulnerable to damage as the dry hair strips it of its moisture. Add a superpower condition to your routine and you’ll have the winter hair of your dreams. Look for moisture, gloss-giving gloss giving formulas.

Protein Powder DELICIOUS IDEAS
Many people use a protein powder or supplement as a part of their diet, and not just those wanting to build muscle.
P
rotein powder can be one way to keep you full for longer, up your daily protein intake or assist with weight loss or other fitness goals. While you can just shake them up with water or milk, or add to a smoothie, there are some more interesting and delicious ways to use protein powder. Here are a few suggestions.
BLISS BALLS
A healthy raw treat, bliss balls are perfect to have on hand for that afternoon energy dip. Usually made with blitzed-up nuts and seeds, you can add a scoop of protein powder to give the snack more sustenance. Just make sure to adjust the liquid amount, as it will make a drier mixture.
YOGHURT BOOST
Mix in a scoop of protein to your yoghurt for an extra boost. You can mix and match flavours, for example a vanilla protein powder with berry yoghurt makes the perfect sweet treat or light breakfast. Have by itself or top with fresh fruit or granola.
CAFFEINE ALWAYS
Try adding a scoop of protein powder to your milk of choice before making your iced coffee. This will thicken up the texture, almost like a frappe. There are options for coffee or chocolate-flavoured protein powders, making a great addition to your morning iced latte or mocha.

earing loss develops slowly and admitting to a hearing loss can be difficult. The good news is there’s help out there if you or someone you care about is experiencing
hearing loss. Hear Again is a highly rated clinic in Christchurch, with a team of experts ready to assist you on your hearing journey. Proudly New Zealand-owned and fully independent means they offer unbiased, honest advice and solutions. With so many options out there now for hearing devices, it can be difficult to know what’s best. Often people can think top-ofthe-range hearing devices will give the best results, but Hear Again owner Steve Foster explains that this is not always the case. “With the advances of technology now, even the lower-cost hearing aids can give a great result. What is more important is how they are set up and programmed, as they are massively flexible.”

There can be many underlying reasons as to why an individual suffers hearing loss; one common cause is an excess of ear wax, resulting in blocked ears. With the aid of micro-suction, Hear Again clinicians can gently and painlessly remove ear wax and debris. Get in touch to hear more. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, Hear Again is located at The Hub in Hornby. Call 03 974 1658, or book an appointment online. For information, email info@hearagain.co.nz.

“One person’s music is another person’s noise” Steve says that when someone is struggling with their hearing devices, it is often because they are unsuitable for them or haven’t been optimally programmed for their individual needs. Having a wealth of experience in selecting and setting up hearing devices is critical. Each client’s needs are individual, and there is no one size fits all fix. “We can see 10 clients with the exact same hearing loss and they all need something different,” says Steve. “One person’s music is another person’s noise.” Because of this, the team at Hear Again pride themselves on taking the time to get to know their clients. “We are passionate about listening,” says Steve. “Clients come to us saying they feel like they haven’t been listened to by other clinics: they have been rushed through the process, or they never see the same clinician twice.” It is important for each person who walks Metropol July 21, 2022 39

he explains that “community is expressed in fostering a spirit of generosity, building equality and oneness.” At the opening of the new Flow Wellbeing Centre in 2021, Farhi reiterated her belief and passion for community. “Entering any of the studios feels like moving into a sacred space; an ancient cave, a forest glen, or the ocean’s edge. This centre sets a new standard for what a good yoga and wellbeing centre can be.” Flow Wellbeing incorporates both Flow Yoga and Flow Therapeutics. Flow Therapeutics specialises in pregnancy and women’s health. Includes massage, craniosacral osteopathy, life coaching/trauma therapy, nutritionist, herbalist and a dietician. Services include facials, midwifery, LED Light Therapy with NZ’s only full bed, FlowPresso (lymphatic drainage suit) and Hañsa Yoga Therapy. Terrific Truffles Truffle season is here and it’s the perfect time to add this delicacy to your culinary efforts.
G
rated, shaved, in butter, oil and salt, truffles are a versatile luxury fungus. Add them to your scrambled eggs, mashed potato, cheese and pasta. Truffle salt* is really popular with chefs because it is such an easy way to add magic to any dish. You can either preserve a whole truffle or thinly slice it and distribute it throughout the salt.

2
Thinly slice the truffle. Put the truffle in the container and add half the salt.

The gin to your tonic D
Daniel Stapleforth is passionate about gin. In fact, he is so passionate about it that, along with three childhood friends, he has set up his own gin distillery.
aniel spent many years working in breweries and distilleries around the world, loving the creation of different beer and spirit flavours. Back in New Zealand, just as the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he had a lightbulb moment. “I was tired of big cities,” Daniel says. “I wanted the clean air of the New Zealand countryside and I found it, high on a hill near Cust in North Canterbury. It’s a place totally conducive to the creation of gins full of wonderful botanical flavours.”
50 July 21, 2022 Metropol
Starting a new business in the middle of a pandemic takes courage, but Daniel and his friends have persisted. THEY NOW PRODUCE THREE DIFFERENT GIN STYLES: • Chic Gin (their take on pink gin with flavours of juniper, angelica, orange, strawberry, raspberry and hibiscus) • NZ Dry Gin (consisting of eight different botanicals including juniper, coriander, liquorice root and citrus) • Premium Gin (a modern contemporary
gin very forward on botanicals as it contains 10 different floral and herb elements). Each of the styles is hand-crafted in small batches by Daniel as much as possible using organic locally sourced ingredients. Everything is natural without any enhancers or sweeteners. The result is a prestige product worthy of a place on the shelves of any liquor store in the world.

oing so has created more of a desire to makes homes calming, peaceful spaces where we feel more relaxed, and this has in turn led to a few new trends, and some re-visited. Top designers have highlighted numerous current trends for 2022, including more earthy brown colours in textiles, furniture, homeware and accessories, an increase in nature-inspired surfaces and accents, and also in soft, curvy furniture.
TACTILE TEXTILES
Rough woven linens, sumptuous velvets and patterned jute bring texture and depth to spaces. An easy room refresh comes from revamping curtains, cushions and furnishing upholstery.
BRING NATURE INDOORS Connect with nature through natural surfaces such as wood, stoneware, terracotta, marble, and travertine, used in backsplashes, furniture, and decorative objects. Accessorise with natural crystals, curvy mushroom silhouettes, exotic flora and fauna textiles, and art.
CURVED AND SCULPTURAL FIGURES Softer curved shapes and angles are to the fore in furniture and architecture. Sensual shapes, curved edges and deep, luxurious seats work well to create cosy spaces.

No moulding? No matter! Interesting architectural features like moulding, cornices can add a lot of character to a home. They can be amplified by painting them in a colour that complements or contrasts with your wall, ceiling and floor colours or downplayed by painting everything in a single uniform hue.
I
f your home doesn’t have interesting architectural features and you can’t stomach the investment of the pricey materials and installation, you can create a similar effect through contrast simply by using paint. In this room, wide borders that run across the tops and at the corners of each wall are painted in Resene Eighth Spanish White and stand out from the main colour blocks that cover the remainder of each wall in Resene Double Spanish White. These complex creamy whites, while classic, are trending for their ability to bring warmth to your home and their flexibility – blending beautifully with a whole range of accent colours and design styles. To get the look, first paint the entire room in two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to the lighter of your two chosen hues. Allow the first to dry fully before applying the second and allow the
second to dry fully before moving on. Then, use a pencil, ruler and a level to lightly mark an equal distance down from the ceiling and out from the corners so that you will have lines to follow when you apply your masking. Be sure to use high-quality ‘washi-style’ painter’s masking tape, available from Resene ColorShops, and press down the edges of your tape firmly to ensure you get a sharp, clean line once it’s removed. Then, paint the inside of your masked area in two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to your darker chosen hue. Artwork is another great way to create character in a space, but it doesn’t always need to be on canvas or paper. If you, a family member or a friend are handy with a jig saw, try cutting out some interesting shapes from a sheet of 5mm thick plywood. You could choose to paint your shapes in one or more solid colours; however, if you would like the texture of the wood’s natural
grain to show through, you could choose to use a wood stain to colour them instead. We alternated Resene Colorwood Meranti and Resene Colorwood Dark Oak to stain our four shapes. PAINT Walls in Resene Double Spanish White with borders in Resene Eighth Spanish White, floor in Resene Quarter Spanish White, timber shapes stained in Resene Colorwood Meranti and Resene Colorwood Dark Oak, cabinet in Resene Quarter Spanish White, plant pot in Resene Double Spanish White, deco table in Resene Clay Creek. ACCESSORIES Fuzzy chair from David Shore, golden knot from Freedom, wooden birds and turned wooden bowl from Good Form, plant pot stand from Cane Collective.

Sophisticated security for TVNZ For intruders plotting a break-in, outdated security technology is a gift, for they will have already sussed its weaknesses, plus, they will have the latest tech to crack a dated system.

ith security system technology now providing more user-friendly software packages and/or smart phone applications, it makes sense to be one step ahead of the bad guys. Combined Security Solutions were recently contacted by TVNZ to evaluate its existing security system. The goal was to future-proof the office complex for both staff and visitors, but also provide real-time streaming of the cameras
to remote locations. Everchanging technology and higher resolution and licensable features, such as human detection and crowd detection alerts, determined the company on an upgrade. Mike Fitzgerald, TVNZ News Operations Manager, described the upgrade as magnificent. “It was an easy, no hassle change-over, with after-hours work enabling us to carry on with our normal busy working days.”
“By the time of commissioning and the user training on the new system, we were over the moon with the end result and love our new 5mp and 8mp cameras.” Discuss your security needs with Paul, call 027 433 7997, or email paul@combinedsecurity.co.nz, and follow the team on Facebook.

You might think a building company that offers an incredible spectrum of services, with sister businesses in glass and glazing, and steel and fabrication, would not be particularly interested in bespoke home building and traditional craftsmanship. Its focus would be spec home building, cookie cutter style, and liberal use of the nail gun, right?
W
rong! There is a building company that can offer a huge range of services in a truly one-stop shop way, but which places traditional craftsmanship at the heart of every project. DGI Morgan Ltd not only brings the traditional can-do approach, but Director David Morgan is also a shipwright and boatbuilder by training. “I’m all about quality work, detailing, and high-end finishes,” says David. With carpenters ranging in age from 22 – 67, versatility and in-house training is intrinsic to the company and evidenced by the sheer range of recent projects. A threeyear staged renovation project began with demolition and replacement of outbuildings and was completed with the replacement of all bathrooms inside the home.
READY TO GET YOUR PROJECT STARTED?
“The home is a Warren and Mahoney-styled concrete veneer house, and we built so as to completely match that,” says David. A new build 1000 square metre North Canterbury home in stone and masonry, the full renovation of a home in Hornby, and six architecturally designed relocatable pods under construction at their base at Rangiora to be trucked inland to their forest site, are just a few recent examples. “Our portfolio includes residential and architectural new builds, alterations and renovations, design and planning, project management, commercial construction and maintenance, high-end interior fitouts, custom timber joinery and insurance work. No job is too big or too small for the teams, and they are available for emergency call-outs too.”

Plan your kitchen make-over
I
Many discerning consumers have two major prerequisites for their purchases. Naturally they want quality products, but increasingly they also want products that are environmentally-friendly and sustainable
t is a smart company that recognises these consumer non-negotiables and incorporates them into their business and manufacturing processes. M F Turnbull has been the go-to destination for surface coatings in Christchurch for over 30 years now and has always been ahead of the curve with its longstanding reuse, repair and recycle ethos. This company has been further enhancing its green credentials of late by working with coatings that are as ecofriendly as possible. “Finishes now are far more eco-friendly than they were even ten years ago,” says co-owner Monique Turnbull. “Most of our paints, lacquers, stains and clears are manufactured in New Zealand and are as environmentally and humanly-safe as we can make them. We have no hesitation in assuring our clients that they are getting the very best finishes that can be produced because we have the latest in prep bays and bake ovens.” So if you have a tired-looking kitchen
that would benefit from resurfacing and re-spraying with quality products look no further than Kitchen Renewal by MF Turnbull. The company finishes new joinery, but a staple of their work is refinishing and refurbishing. Making-over kitchens by resurfacing cabinetry is hugely popular.
“Most of our paints, lacquers, stains and clears are manufactured in New Zealand and are as environmentally and humanly-safe as we can make them.”
“People realise that they don’t need to do a full replacement. They can make a radical change just by using new colours or they can do a slight shade adjustment, or simply freshen up the existing colour. They save themselves money and, of course, volume
going to landfill and the energy used in manufacturing new. We find that aspect of the work very satisfying.” says Monique. Resurfacing old furniture is also a favourite with the team. A client will bring in an unusual piece; it might have lovely proportions and be beautifully made, but the appearance no longer suits. Refinished, the piece can anchor a new interior design scheme. Upholstered items with timber parts can be resurfaced and then the piece can be taken to your upholsterer for recovering. Monique suggests you send them photos of your kitchen or your furniture with a description of what you would like and they will quote for you. You can do that either by email info@mfturnbull.co.nz or upload directly through their website. Please include your contact number in case they have questions. You can also call them on 03 365 2519. Peaceful simplicity sums up Japan’s traditional architecture and interior design aesthetic, evolved over centuries into clean and uncluttered living, balancing order, ancient customs, and a love for natural beauty. Here are some suggestions on how to achieve the look and tranquillity that goes with it.
1
Bring nature indoors by adding traditional Japanese plants such as bonsai and bamboo. Use greenery too, but keep it simple.
2
Add a water feature. The serene sounds of water have a calming effect.
3
Add a Japanese-style sliding door. An authentic Japanese door is called a shoji, and slides back and forth, saving space that a swinging door would take up.
4
Make use of screens. Japanese screens comprise translucent paper held inside a wooden frame. Modern versions are often glass panels inside a wooden grid.
5
Combine elements of wood and bamboo in walls, doors, screen grids, and frames. How about a bamboo floor?

sitting
pretty CURATED BY LYNDA PAPESCH
Adding new counter or island seating in a kitchen is a great way to instantly update the look and feeling of your home.
T
he choice today is vast, ranging from stools and barstools through to tall leg luxury dining chairs. Choosing the perfect one is not only about the aesthetic; it is so important to find the correct height and quantity when purchasing new stools. The kitchen is the heart of any home and it’s nice to have a comfortable spot for sitting and entertaining in it while you work away creating culinary delights. And who wants to dine with their food level with their face or have to lean over because their legs don’t fit? One of the first choices will be to decide if you want counter or bar stools. Yes, there is a difference and it is height. As a rule, bar stools are higher.
The kitchen is the heart of any home and it’s nice to have a comfortable spot for sitting and entertaining in while you work away creating culinary delights.

new things HERE ARE A FEW GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICE:
Original & custom watercolour paintings by Charlie Jane Art.
Handpicked unique and quirky home and giftware at Ratbag Home & Gifts.
Always measure from the floor to the underside of the surface, not the top of the surface. Some countertops are thicker than others, giving less leg space. Allow for 66 to 72cm between the centre of each stool so you don’t overcrowd the seating arrangement.
Proudly restoring your loved pieces of furniture. Seaton’s French Polishing & Furniture Repairs.
Style depends on personal tastes and the size of your space. In a smaller eat-in kitchen with a breakfast bar, think about a narrow, backless stool to avoid overcrowding.
Gorgeous scented Circa candle range available at Coco Gifts.
Consider an upholstered stool that will add more cushion and comfort. Think about cleanability. Acrylic is easy to wipe clean, as are leather and metal. Luxuriating! Mouse in the Tub by Maileg, Denmark available at French Blue.

A carpet worth 1000 words
The interior of Rolleston’s new award-winning library imparts an important story for all to see.
W
inner of a prestigious Public Architecture accolade at the recent Canterbury Architecture Awards, Te Ara Ātea celebrates the region’s rich heritage, diversity and unique landscape. Seven years in the making, the $22.7 million, 2200 square metre library is an exceptional visual and functional civic space. Awards judges complimented the “beautiful spaces and moments” carefully curated throughout the interior, offering places to rest, work and ponder. The stunning interior displays are thanks to a clear creative vision and collaborative approach shared by experience design company Workshop e and the architects Warren and Mahoney. Workshop e collaborated closely with the Selwyn District Council

Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning team, Canterbury Museum, heritage groups, artists, and community members to design and produce integrated experiences through the building that explore the district’s stories of people, places and journeys. Notable elements include a specially designed carpet that illustrates the mountains to sea, providing a sensory experience in collaboration with Christchurch rug makers Dilana. The complex large-scale, immersive projection on the ground floor, celebrates the district’s environment and seasons, and includes the work of Nathan Pohio and imagery inspired by artist Cath Brown. It is representative of a co-design process with Te Taumutu Rūnanga, Workshop e and Warren and Mahoney.

ARCHITECTURAL GEM Designed by architects Warren and Mahoney, Te Ara Ātea was built by Armitage Williams, with the internal fit out also by Warren and Mahoney. Sustainability is to the fore in the design, which includes intelligent performance membranes, both inside and out, to control moisture. The clever façade allows just the right amount of light inside, via external louvres.
Show-stopping design
T
For interior and architectural design lovers, it’s always an exciting time seeing the Trends International Design Awards (TIDA), and the 2022 awards were no exception.
he 2022 TIDA Kitchen of the Year was awarded to Christchurch interior designer Davinia Sutton. The winning kitchen is described as both sophisticated and rustic, and perfectly matches the relaxed and serene seaside setting of the home. Davinia, of Detail by Davinia Sutton, says, “Our homeowners envisioned a kitchen space with a natural feel that complemented their architecturally designed beachside holiday home. They desired a relaxed yet functional, uncluttered kitchen that stayed true to
both the boldness of the striking modern architecture and the serenity of the seaside location.” The kitchen had to accommodate everyday functionality as well as the requirements of regular entertaining. “Taking advantage of this spatial placement, the kitchen design is set out in a galley format, extending into a working pantry beyond,” Davinia explains. “The critical pantry area offers the luxury of separating food preparation from the main space when entertaining.” “Its design also creates a defined and
clean block form and perspective from the living space. A raised timber bench provides privacy from the living area and brings an interesting natural element to the design. “The striking warmth of this form draws the kitchen into its surroundings, using a crafted combination of colour, light and texture to create visual unity and to increase the illusion of space.” The TIDA judges felt this kitchen displays a beautiful balance of colour, light and texture, enhancing the space and creating a bespoke kitchen that is both sophisticated and refined.

Torque Talk
Imagine this. You are commuting home from the office on a day like any other. The traffic on the multi-lane street you are driving on is starting to display the usual signs of the 5pm crawl.
S
uddenly, without warning, the car in the next lane cuts across in front of you to avoid the traffic backing up in its lane, all without so much as a blink from its indicators. These days such occurrences are not uncommon. I have heard many stories from others having experienced similar situations. Whether slowing and turning without previously declaring their intentions to the car behind, or bounding into another lane on a whim, one could argue there are plenty of people on Canterbury roads who
just don’t think to use their indicators. This is a pet peeve of mine. The road code clearly states that one should signal for at least three seconds before turning left, right, as you exit a roundabout, or when changing lanes. Signalling by way of vehicle indicators or hand gestures has been iron-clad since the pioneering days of Kiwi motoring. So please, do your utmost to let others know of your desired direction on the road at all times. Otherwise, you may receive another kind of hand gesture from the driver of the car behind.

Keen to beat the rush hour traffic? Looking for an electric moped? Then check out the LIMA M9 Electric.
T
he latest data from The Motor Industry Association of New Zealand (Inc), listed it as top of the list of electric mopeds (up to 50cc or equivalent), and ranked 4th overall. The LIMA M9 has a single charge range of 45km, a charge time of six hours from flat and a charge cost of less than $0.50. It was introduced by motorcycle parts and accessory distributor Whites Powersports. Company RIDE division manager Brendan Mayall says its popularity comes from providing consumers with an option to go
electric on their daily commute without the huge investment other electric vehicles carry, all while being able to be ridden on a learner car licence. Mayall adds, “With congestion issues, excessively rising fuel costs and growing environmental concerns people are looking for ways to reduce their costs and their carbon footprint. Motorcycles in general are a fantastic option, but the LIMA M9 ticks all the boxes for a lot of people, making the choice easy. However, it would be great if the government considered including motorcycles and EV motorcycles in their clean vehicle rebate scheme.”

New Zealand Drives a Ranger
The wait is over. Next-Gen Ford Ranger is now on-site here at Avon City Ford! The smartest, most capable and most versatile Ranger yet.
TEST DRIVE TODAY
72 July 21, 2022 Metropol
BY BEN SELBY
Go anywhere in Canterbury and you will see a Ford Ranger within the first five minutes. No one can deny the popularity of Ford’s big selling ute, and things are looking very much the same for the latest Ranger to hit our roads.
T
he 2022 Ranger does have a more American stance, with its new LED C-clamp headlights and its 50mm larger wheelbase and width. The wider track also allows tradies to store a standard wooden pallet in the rear. Buyers can option a 2.0L single turbo or bi-turbo four cylinder but my test car, the range topping Wildtrak, supplied by Avon City Ford, gets the eagerly awaited 3.0L V6 turbo diesel. Mated to a 10-speed automatic box, it is essentially the same unit Ford US put in the iconic F-150 pickup. It is also a very refined unit at that. When hoofing it along, it gives a seamless delivery of power and torque from low in the rev range. It doesn’t come in one big lump, but is evenly spread throughout.
The Wildtrak gets multiple 4WD drive modes such as 2H, 4H, and 4L. The newest is 4A or automatic which evenly distributes power between the front and rear axles to get the best performance possible in all road conditions. It’s a clever system and allows the new Ranger to munch up the rough stuff quite well. Inside, the Ranger has been given an overhaul, with a new and very intuitive 12-inch LED touchscreen infotainment system taking centre stage, literally. This screen displays all your usual tech, but also sports a dedicated off-road screen which displays the pitch, steering and roll angle and a 360-camera giving the driver a panoramic view of the rough terrain. My time with the Ranger was brief but one can safely say there is much to like here.
