Buy NZ made As Christmas draws ever closer, retail therapy often increases, so it is timely to think about what you’re buying, and to support local, and New Zealand-made. Big business may arguably be the backbone of New Zealand retail, yet it is small businesses that are the heart, and there is no doubt many of these are suffering. Several data points paint an
unfavourable picture for small businesses in the lead up to Christmas this year. Company liquidations are up 40% on the same period last year and online retailers currently have the highest rate of business failure (Centrix). According to RetailNZ, just 57% of retailers are feeling confident or very confident that their retail business will survive the next 12 months. Small business sales figures have declined for the first time in two years (Xero), and just under 70% of New Zealand businesses think that the next 12 months are going to be tougher than the last 12 months, according to MYOB. Many small businesses are optimistic about what the new Government will bring, but lowering inflation won’t happen overnight. We can all help in the meantime, especially in the mad rush to Christmas, filling stockings, sorting presents, and stocking the pantry. Many small businesses rely on the Christmas trading period to survive and thrive, so show them some love and support them by choosing to buy New Zealand-made products. Christchurch, and the pages of Metropol, are full of local businesses who value your support, invest in the local economy, and give back to their local communities. Check them out as a first resort, not a last.

No luck to it Few artists truly encapsulate the characteristics that come with a Kiwi music legend. Years of experience, song longevity and lyrical genius under his belt, Jordan Luck built his way to the top of the charts, and Kiwi hearts. Metropol writer Nina Tucker catches up with him about the landscape of music and what he’s up to now.
“L
ove.” That’s what keeps the Jordan Luck Band playing stages across the country, bringing music to everlistening ears. He says he’ll never stop. “Musicians don’t retire. We just keep singing and writing.” That’s what he’s been doing for over forty years. From the beginning with his local and Canterbury-loved debut band Basement, to The Dance Exponents and soon after, The Exponents, to now with his namesake Jordan Luck Band. The current lineup, Jordan, Beaver, Rich Mixture, Bryan Bell, and Joe Walsh, have been together for over 14 years. When the 1983 classic, Victoria, was just 10 years old, Jordan wondered if it would still be a hit in another decade. There’s no clarification necessary. Fans still chase his shows. “Humbled,” he says, on the response the band continues to receive from the public. The songs have survived all kinds of music periods, from the violent 80s to the adoring 90s, and the communal, cross-age audiences of now. “Being a good live band is kind of useful.” Like the longevity of each song, Jordan says a loyal following develops over time. “You’ve got to last 10 years. music in five years. He adds he’s felt like that since early The Dance Exponents days. “There’s lots of self-examination, it’s that confidence thing.” His first taste of music with Basement showed a fascinatingly enjoyable and doable future, and Jordan explains they still “have as much fun as the audience does.” Jordan’s songs simply find him. “The songs, for me, come out of the ether. They’re there and you grab them. I’m not sure if it’s attacking me or invading me or if I’m just able to catch it, I just know it happens.” Even with the advances in technology, Jordan explains he avoids recording each melody as it comes to him. When a song reaches him once, it’s great, when it comes twice, it’s a sign. Only then will Jordan reach for his phone to record it. While his music mind spins, so do that of the young. Jordan recalled watching a younger man at a recent show completely spiral into awe watching the band play. “His jaw dropped.” Jordan remembered it was like watching someone discover music for the first time: “Is that what makes that sound?” It happens often, Jordan adds, because live music is an entire experience of songs, volume, beat, rhythm, and interaction with the artists. He’s offered his time to inspire and encourage the music of others, outside of the songs he produces. The Play it Strange Secondary Schools Songwriting Competition, of which Jordan adjudicated for years, introduced him to new music from budding artists. “The song writing is way up there,

Caring and sharing A huge field, palliative care is at the forefront of Kate Reid’s working career. She talks to Metropol writer Céline Gibson about how, and why.
O
ne of Kate Reid’s favourite pleasure pursuits is classic motoring in her MG sportscar. She can be seen, kitted out in helmet and overalls, completing laps around a race track, a huge contrast to her day job lecturing at the University of Canterbury (UC). Kate’s story starts years ago, with a change of mind about her career options. “I was boarding at Christchurch Girls’ High School and was thinking of becoming a physiotherapist. Quite a few in my class were opting to become nurses, so I decided to investigate nursing as well.” After completing her three years training, Kate worked as a junior staff nurse in Christchurch Hospital’s Oncology ward. “I often asked whether we were doing a good enough job for those people who were not going to survive their cancer. In those days it was a lot (not so today). I didn’t know the answer. The ward sister and three of the oncologists told me I needed to go away and come back when I had the answer.” They supported Kate to go to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, a hospital solely dedicated to cancer. It was here that she discovered the hospice concept of care and what was known as the Hospice Movement. Returning to New Zealand at the beginning of the hospice movement here proved fortunate. “Internationally, and in

New Zealand, was largely being run by religious orders. “Mary Potter Hospice in Wellington and Auckland’s St Joseph’s Hospice were quietly getting on with the job, but it wasn’t formally known.” In 1984 Kate was contacted by the Matron and Medical Superintendent of Burwood Hospital, where the austere former Male Nurses Hostel was operating as a hospice. “The Cancer Society put money into carpeting, and rotary clubs rolled up their sleeves with paintbrushes and wallpaper. Something unique was happening there that families appreciated, a home away from home feel,” Kate recalls. As the hospice movement started to grow, so too did the need to protect what it did. “We needed a national body. The Cancer Society, nationally, stepped up, contributing funding and its Wellington office space for Hospice New Zealand to set up its base.” All went well until health reforms resulted in the closure of the Burwood hospice. The Nurse Maude Association took on the contract to continue hospice/palliative care in the community, although without the education component. “Because I’d served in the national role of Hospice New Zealand, I could see what other training was going on,” says Kate. “I felt it was a way to streamline that opportunity.” With strong support from Victoria University in Wellington, a sub-education group of Hospice New Zealand was formed.

“We worked on education, and were initially supported through post-graduate study at Victoria University, and then also through Whitireia Polytechnic in Porirua.” In 2007, Kate began her palliative care lecturing role at UC, a full-time role she continues to this day. Her students are predominantly nurses, but also encompass physios, doctors, social workers, occupational therapists, counsellors, and chaplains. “That more interprofessional way of learning is therapeutic on a number of levels. It gives permission to toss ideas around and see where they land, and the initiatives they come up with for improving practices in their services are fabulous.” Outside of UC, Kate sits on a number of boards, such as the Cancer Society, which she joined in 1987, and has chaired since 2012. Kate also chairs the Akaroa Trust board, is on the board of Akaroa Health, and the board of Governance New Zealand. Tūwhana, a recently established Business Events Advocate Programme that brings together influential thought leaders from multiple sectors to promote Christchurch as an international business destination, is another organisation Kate contributes her expertise to. Her wish for palliative care in 2024, is for end-of-life care to return to the community. “Caring for the dying is not a medical event; it is a societal event, with a small amount of medical intervention. The majority of caring for the dying happens outside of institutions,” she explains. “When I look at how palliative care came about, it was because
we deserted the dying. When I became involved in the hospice movement, the government at the time decreed that every New Zealander had the right to a good birth and a good death.” Kate lauds the huge advances made in medicine, but feels that those diagnosed with a life-threatening or life-challenging condition are viewed as being “a bit awkward, because it is that end of the spectrum. We’ve left this group behind and I think we’re letting people down.” Kate says the palliative care movement believes that people have the right to a good quality of life, despite a life-challenging or life-limiting diagnosis. “My need is to put palliative care back into the hands of the community, back into families where it belongs, and not make a speciality out of it. Dying is a normal, natural part of life. As a human being, it is innate in us to care for another person, but we think it ought to be professionalised, for some reason, and it doesn’t always need to be.” Kate brings the interview to a close with a beautiful reflection for those experiencing the grieving process: “Grief is the price you pay for loving someone – it is the cost of love.”

Time there prepared Markus well for when it came time to join his family’s business, in its 100th jubilee year, 1999. Next year Miele celebrates its 125th anniversary and is still performing well. When Markus joined the team, its annual turnover was €2 billion. By last year that had increased to €5 billion. A Miele ambassador, and NKBA’s 2023 Designer of the Year, Davinia praises the brand’s appliances for their performance, craftsmanship, sustainability, and longevity. “Miele works for small through to high-end budgets,” she says, adding that the cost of the appliance is counterbalanced by their longevity and sustainability. “I love that it is such a fantastic product on multiple levels. The appliances are expertly designed, they are innovative, and sustainably manufactured, and Miele is a family-owned company that continually strives to maintain its quality.”

Colour Your Christmas Classic shades
Rich burgundy and hues of green are never too far away when it’s Christmas. These classic colours, with a touch of simplistic white to mellow them, create the finest Christmas ambience. Add a few nutcrackers, lanterns and wreaths to continue the classic look. A quality tartan in Christmas colours strewn across the sofa adds a pop of elegance.
Modern and minimalistic
Growing in popularity, this colour scheme leans on a white Christmas for inspiration, with golds, whites, and silvers. Make a statement with snowy white trees and silver tinsel, and top them with dusted flowers and shining ribbons. Sprinkle snowflakes, fairy lights, and a white sheepskin about your home for an extra touch of glam.
Tempted by the trend
Hi Barbie! If you haven’t noticed, pink is in. Lean into the colour of the moment by dotting it around your space. Pink candy canes, baubles, and stockings are easy ways to incorporate this trend without overdoing it. Pink and white wrapping paper makes for a cotton candy, and undeniably fun, tree base.
Canterbury colours
True Cantabrians bring red and black into their wardrobes, but a Canterbury Christmas is for those truly committed. Decorate your tree with ribbons, Canterbury-coloured ornaments, and a hint of silver for a stylish appearance. A plaid red and black Christmas tree skirt base keeps your presents cosy and coordinated.
Eco-friendly
If you’ve adopted eco-friendly Christmas wrapping this year, such as brown wrapping paper and sprigs of pine, you might wish to extend the nature theme in your home. Fill your spaces with greens, browns and earthy tones, and pops of gold if you’re after some cohesive sparkle. Dried flowers draped with fairy lights are a chic option. Metropol December 7, 2023 17

On the
crest of a wave The pūteketeke, pictured, also known as the Australasian crested grebe, is New Zealand’s Bird of the Century.
T
he native bird was awarded the title after American-British comedian John Oliver launched his own campaign for it to win, garnering 290,374 votes (83%) out of the total 350,000 in the competition. The crested grebe is found on up to 100 lakes, mainly in the Canterbury and Otago high country. According to the Rare Species website, the species suffered a major decline in many New Zealand regions, except for parts of inland Canterbury. Numbers hit a low of c.200 in the 1980s, but are slowly increasing and the population may now number 1000 birds. They have recently been recorded breeding on the Canterbury coast, and numbers are increasing in this region.
Interesting facts • • • • •
Crested grebes require lakes surrounded by vegetation for breeding. They are native to New Zealand, although also found in Australia, Europe, and central/southern Asia. The Lake Wānaka Grebe Project has seen more than 500 chicks hatch from its nest platforms. They build floating nests, and ferry their chicks on their backs. Crested grebes mate by approaching prospective partners with a mouthful of wet grass before chest bumping each other.
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas & thank you for your support during the year.

Business grants for women Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) has announced a new grant of $5000 to assist projects and initiatives that support rural communities.
T
he Cynthia Collier Grant will be awarded annually for the next three years with the first grant being awarded in mid 2024. Applications for the 2024 grant are now open, and will close on 30 April 2024. The grant will support projects and activities that focus on children, the elderly, community, or conservation projects, counselling, and education initiatives. Cynthia Collier lived on Wakarua Station near Taihape until her passing, and was a passionate supporter of her community and the work of RWNZ. This month marks her birthday and this year marks the 10th anniversary since her passing. “Mum would love to know that she was being remembered through the continued work of people like her to build community connection and support,” says Cynthia’s daughter, Jo Romanes. This grant adds to the existing philanthropic funds administered by RWNZ, including relief after adverse events, a range of educational grants, bursaries, and community project grants. “Women like Cynthia are the backbone of our rural communities,” says National President, Gill Naylor. “We are delighted that this generous bequest from Cynthia’s family will enable us to honour her memory in this way, and support the wonderful work that happens in our communities every day.”
Q: BUSINESS IS BLOSSOMING!! A:
Despite the recent election, or maybe because of it, we are very busy currently dealing with both buyers and sellers of businesses. We usually find that during a holiday period (e.g. Christmas – New Year) enquiries for businesses ramp up significantly, and we believe that’s because people have some time to consider what they would like to do next, and the thought of buying a business has strong appeal. We are already fielding a lot of enquiries from people who see Christchurch as an excellent location to live and own a business, and we expect even higher

In meeting the needs of a hybrid workplace, digital experiences hinge on doing things automatically, and at scale.
I
n today’s business environment, the digital transformation imperative is embrace automation today, or go out of business tomorrow. In other words, automation is critical to success in the modern world, and those who don’t take advantage of it will quickly find themselves struggling to keep up. What’s sobering is that over 50% of businesses don’t have clarity around their systems and processes, and they know it’s holding back efficiency. A lack of automation can lead to missed opportunities for cost savings and process improvements. It can also result in competitive disadvantage, as companies that have adopted workflow and automation solutions can do more with less. By streamlining workflows and processes through automation, businesses can consistently handle large quantities of information. This improves operational efficiency and eliminates the time spent handling tedious, time-consuming manual work. I can help streamline how your business completes everyday tasks so your employees can focus on higher value priorities. Getting rid of unnecessary, repetitive work helps employees feel more engaged with their jobs. At the same time, this provides a base for your employees to provide great customer experiences. The market and political landscape of New Zealand is looking steadier and steadier as we head towards Christmas.
O
ne of the most promising global trends is the gradual ease in inflation rates, signalling potential relief for the economy. While we hope for a downward trajectory in 2024, the next 6-9 months will paint a clearer picture. For those considering restructuring or refinancing their mortgages or contemplating new loans, our advice is to fix for 1-2 years. This will position you to seize more affordable longterm rates when they arrive in the market, reducing the risk of taking high breakage costs. This year has witnessed an amazing surge among first home buyers. Moving into 2024, seasoned property investors are starting to come back into the market, which will mean aspiring first home buyers at the under 700k price mark will face more competition, and the market between 750k and 1.1 million is anticipated to buzz with activity. Looking ahead, our team stands fully equipped to support your aspirations in 2024 and beyond. Whether you’re a first home buyer, looking to sell and buy, an investor, or a developer, we are committed to helping you make informed financial decisions. Trading political values
Your brand matrix
The Coalition agreement has been signed, and what I find interesting is the message this sends: principles and values are no more than an optional extra to be traded away at will.
Thinking about global brands that have mastered the art of branding, those that jump out at me are the likes of McDonald’s, Apple, Nike, and Cadbury.
N
o real surprise here, given that we are talking about politicians. Given the enormous amount of borrowing Labour did in their last term, and that many people accept there has been huge underinvestment in infrastructure for the last few decades, I was - very foolishly - hoping that there would be an emphasis on the long-term future of New Zealand. The coalition agreement put an end to that; a few superficial headlines and nothing that will make any real improvement to the long-term future of New Zealand. We simply need to find more money to catch up on the underinvestment in infrastructure, whether we are talking about children’s education, or about a hospital; they all need a huge investment. Playing with tax rates won’t achieve anything; New Zealand needs to join 99% of the OECD and bring in a capital gains tax (CGT) - on all forms of property. It seems we are very happy to pay tens of thousands of dollars to a real estate agent, when even a small portion of this going to a CGT or sales tax, will make a huge difference to most New Zealanders over the long-term. Just look at KiwiSaver - opposed by National - which now has something in the region of $4 billion in it. Imagine the difference a decade of CGT could make. adbury had a unique branding campaign a few years ago. They packaged their chocolate bars in a plain purple wrapper, with no logo or words. The takeaway from this was that everyone recognised that the chocolate was Cadbury, just from the colour alone. So, while you may not be as big as these brands, there are four key things to a brand matrix that can ensure heightened brand awareness and long-term success. 1. Your logo Your logo must be simple, scalable and recognisable. It should be something you use in all areas of your brand communication. 2. Your brand colours You must choose your brand colours carefully, as your target market will recognise them first. Don’t stray away from them. 3. Your tagline A tagline is important as it gives your audience a sneak peek into who you are. You can use a tagline in advertising campaigns, and it should be something that your audience sees first on your website. 4. Your people Your people are the friendly faces that your customers will deal with. Showing the people behind your business creates an element of trust and familiarity with your brand. Stick to these four components to simplify your marketing and make your brand recognisable. Use this matrix and implement it across everything. Call me today to get your marketing on track.

hat’s where Rentworks Property Management comes to the fore. In the five years since Brent Manderson and Steve Hawker took over the business, their extensive property management experience has helped them navigate this distinctive environment, and achieve significant growth, doubling the number of properties under management. The team at Rentworks, which has now expanded to include four property managers, takes pride in simplifying the property management process. They handle everything from tenant selection, rental fee determination, rent collection, and maintenance inspections. “Our background as property managers and investment property owners means that we are well-equipped to provide advice on market rates, and stay updated on everchanging legislation and regulations that impact the rental property market,” they say. Upcoming regulation of the property management sector is on the horizon, and Brent and Steve welcome these changes with open arms. Their proactive approach has positioned them well, as they have already diligently implemented virtually all of the required measures so far announced, assuring that they maintain a leading edge in delivering exceptional service to their clients. One of their core principles has been to develop personal relationships with property owners and tenants, setting them apart from the corporate, hands-off approach. They’ve remained highly visible in the business, meeting with owners regularly and encouraging visits from clients. This emphasis on the personal touch has contributed to their success. In the ever-evolving Christchurch rental market, Brent and Steve have adapted to the changes, and their expertise is proving invaluable. “The local market is thriving, experiencing a surge in enquiries and applications for specific properties,” says Brent. “Rental demand is on the rise, and tenants’ heightened expectations for healthier living spaces have prompted significant enhancements in the overall quality of available housing options.” Rentworks’ competitive fee structure, free rental assessments for property owners, utilisation of the latest technologies, and a deep understanding of the Christchurch rental market make them the go-to choice for both owners and tenants. “Our commitment to personal service, and staying ahead of the curve in property management, has propelled our growth, and we continue to be the leaders in the Christchurch property management industry,” adds Steve. Casual chic CURATED BY NINA TUCKER
Quiet luxury, and the rise of Victoria Beckham’s namely ‘posh’ style have brought a resurgence in comfortable and casual, yet utterly chic dressing.
L
iving a casual chic lifestyle all comes down to styling and a complementary colour scheme. Neutral tones ooze elegance, navy, browns, beige, and creams, splashed with gold to accessorise. Avoid more than three colours in separate pieces to keep the cohesion, and pair with sleek, clean hairstyles. Build a wardrobe of well-fitted tee shirts, tailored pants and simple dresses, with vests and blazers for layering on those brisker days.

ebbie’s training and early career as a nurse made it a natural progression into starting up Total Body Concept and specialising in skin care. Multi award-winning clinic, the Total Body Concept mantra has always been ‘to enhance natural beauty, care for the body and create a freedom of spirit in the best way possible’. No matter who works at the clinic, this mantra has
remained vital and ensures confidence in the clinic for years to come. “Cantabrians who have moved to Auckland fly back to get their treatments; they trust us,” Debbie says. In line with the mantra, in 2010 Debbie and Rob had a purpose-built clinic constructed, the only one of its kind in Australasia. Design plays a crucial role in creating a relaxing experience, and the clinic stands as a testament to this, with
ample parking and a calming atmosphere. The team and loyal clients got together earlier this month at The Christchurch Club to celebrate the 30-year milestone. Visit the website today to see how the Total Body Concept team can transform your skin.

sunscreen savvy Every year, 80,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with skin cancer; the highest incidence in the world.
W
hat’s worse, our ‘she’ll be right’ attitude makes this fact unsurprising. Just last year, a new law was introduced, cracking down on the criteria that sunscreens need to meet, to be sold to the public. This means some of the products we’ve been using haven’t been safe enough, and it’s even more reason to start using a safer one. Using sunscreen is a growing trend in the skincare world, but few of us understand what is important when buying and applying. Practising safe skin health doesn’t just start and end with sun protection factor (SPF) products. Ensure you also get regular mole mapping too.
DO:
DON’T:
• Search for UVB and UVA when purchasing sunscreen. This will help protect against ultraviolet-B rays causing skin damage and sunburn, and ultraviolet-A rays, which make your risk of skin cancer skyrocket. Look for UVA and UVB-blocking zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in the ingredients for ultimate protection.
• Settle for anything lower than SPF30. SPF reflects sun rays back, keeping your skin protected. Always ensure your sunscreen has a sun protection factor of 30 or more for the best results.
• Think ahead. Skin can take more than 30 minutes to completely absorb all SPF products, by which time it may have all washed off if you’ve been swimming. Apply lots and apply it early.
• Expect sunscreen to do all the work. Sun rays are harsh and sunscreen shouldn’t be your only means of safety. Pack your hats, cover-ups, sunglasses, and SPF lip balms, to protect your entire body. • Apply on wet or damp skin. Water may dilute sunscreens, so dry skin is best.

Effective breathing feels easy, your breath is smooth, quiet, steady, and controlled. You feel relaxed, as though you are receiving enough air without any physical strain.
I
“
neffective breathing causes a range of unhealthy symptoms most commonly experienced as breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations, anxiety, and the feeling of not getting enough air in,” says Catherine George from The Lung Mechanic. These symptoms occur due to changes in the balance of carbon dioxide, adrenaline, and cortisol levels, resulting in muscle memory and joint changes. Before you know it, a pattern of dysfunctional breathing is established, materialising in an acute or chronic form. Similarly, this pattern spills over into exercise performance and instead of the breath adapting appropriately and returning to a neutral baseline, it cannot. our job can take up a large portion of your day, and therefore your everyday life. Equally, success and happiness at work, can be measured by the comfort and optimism you experience daily in your chosen professions. Situations where physical pain or discomfort occur at work directly affect an employee’s physical capability, drive, and personal well-being. The most common work injuries include slips, trips, falls, overexertion, or hazardous contact with equipment. Statistics show that 80% to 90% of all workplace accidents are caused by human error. Stress or fatigue increases the likelihood of these injuries among workers. EnableWorks is passionate about creating sustainable productivity for businesses, says Occupational Therapist and Clinical Director, Randa Abbasi. “Injuries are mostly preventable through appropriate industry compatible safety precautions. When measurable and sustainable injury prevention structures are implemented, employees have an environment in which to thrive, a winning formula for success-driven organisations. The skilled physiotherapists and occupational therapists at EnableWorks can help businesses establish specific injury prevention norms for individuals, as well as for specific work-task teams. This reduces the chance of injuries occurring before employees are unable to perform their job. Staff can undergo an Ergonomic and Safe Work Assessment, where environmental factors, equipment, work positions or working methods are taken into consideration to resolve and revise specific workstation set-up protocols. The objective is to create healthy habits for posture, thereby maintaining the correct neutral spinal alignment. This prevents musculoskeletal disorders or repetitive health related issues from developing, as a result of extended hours spent at the computer. Both remote and on-site staff can gain from this, and its long-term impact relies on ongoing, proactive self-management. An Early Intervention Assessment helps staff identify and address pain or discomfort before it becomes a bigger problem. This is a vital process and key management tool for any organisation,” says Randa. A valuable Workplace Clinic is a staff wellbeing programme, managed onsite. Specialised therapists meet with the health and safety representative once a month. Any staff members experiencing pain or discomfort can be assessed and given self-management tools and strategies, including ergonomic solutions for problematic work areas. “This unique, and cost-effective approach establishes trust between staff and their employers, which is key to fostering a positive work environment,” advises Randa, adding; “Investing in staff well-being elevates company productivity and unlocks greater business potential.” Enabling safe work; Enabling great health. in Sumner Rumour has it that Christchurch is in for a hot, dry summer, thanks to the El Niño weather pattern.
T
hat’s welcome news after a dull, overcast, and wet spring. Cantabrians will definitely want to get outdoors and there is little that speaks of summer more than a visit to a seaside restaurant. Enjoy a drink overlooking the water, or a delicious evening meal, as the sun goes down over the sea, leaving its fingers of pink on the majestic Southern Alps. Beach Bar on the Esplanade at Sumner offers just that idyllic setting and atmosphere. This is a delightful destination that has been popular with both locals and visitors for many years. It’s open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and its huge sheltered deck is the ideal place to socialise with family and friends, and to enjoy the beauty of nature. Such a magical environment deserves food prepared with equally exceptional care and attention. Beach Bar’s menu has an international flavour, with a focus on fresh seafood. There are the classics you would expect for breakfast and lunch – smashed avo and heirloom tomatoes, or seafood chowder, and tempura fish and chips. There’s also the unexpected – seared scallops, or sticky Szechuan eggplant. At dinner the chefs pull out all the stops with lamb shoulder, salmon, or grouper, presented with interesting and tempting vegetables and sauces. Gift cards are available to buy online, and you can follow the restaurant on Facebook for the latest updates.

aches come in many architectural styles, from quaint, cosy, and classic, to contemporary, modular, and open plan. Comfort is a prime consideration if building or renovating, followed closely by functionality, both inside and out. You’ll want to invest in comfortable beds and some lounging furniture for those spots that catch the sun, but don’t neglect the rest. Small trinkets and bigger additions that tempt you away from your natural style, there’s plenty of space to mix it up. The way you style your bach will play a big part in your holiday’s vibe. Natural textures and colours are a great way to make your space homely for a holiday. Sage greens, sky blues, and sandy tones create a cohesive atmosphere, capturing the essence of a summer getaway. environment you’re in. Choose soft interior linens and rattan furniture but keep it classy with crystal glassware. Simplicity is important, but those shiny, glistening glasses are an exception. Blending your indoor and outdoor environment is effortless, and natural elements make great table decorations. Some fresh or dried flowers bring natural aromas, while large potted plants add greenery. A bach needs to be timeless. Avoid trends or passing fads, your styling needs to hold longevity so that it’s a space you love for years, especially if you only visit a few times each season. That said, a bach is a place to
experiment in ways you wouldn’t at home. Make sure you create a space that truly feels like you’re on holiday from your everyday home. Think patterns or prints that reflect the environment you’re in, beachy and natural. Wallpapers are a classy way to tie in prints or patterns. To make a space livelier, add a few pops of colour in each room. A few select pieces of grandparent memorabilia will bridge old memories and new, and give your space a warm, familiar feel. Then, balance it all out with a neutral lounge suite, and organic coffee table.

Summer fun and life in the backyard pool, or at the beach, doesn’t have to result in a trail of wet footprints tracked through the house or bach.
S
etting up an outdoor shower may be as simple or as stylishly integrated as you choose. From a rainfall shower head mounted in a private location, to a more elaborate garden shower room, options are endless. The best time to factor an outdoor shower into a home or bach is at the build
stage, when it can be hooked up to existing plumbing. Alternatively there are plenty of ways to create an amazing looking add-on. Finding a spot that provides privacy but is also connected to both indoor and outdoor spaces is important. It may be a corner of the garden, under a pergola, or on the back of a garage wall.

Some of our best memories are made at our baches and holiday homes. Together with close friends and family, these spaces bring out the happiest, and least work-crazed, versions of us.

o, make it something to be proud of. There are plenty of luxury additions to consider if you want to level up your holiday home, although they are not exclusive to the bach. The outdoor areas of our everyday homes need extra love too, especially when it’s summer. Pools and spas are perhaps the most popular extension to any holiday home. Aside from the health benefits, fun factor, and convenience, a swimming or spa pool increases the value and attraction of any home. Plus, a personal pool and spa is an intimate space, offering more privacy to bathe and lounge in peace and comfort. Consider adding a towel storage cupboard to really impress your guests.

any homeowners are investing in outdoor kitchens, giving them more entertaining space, increased value in their home, and various health benefits that come from fresh air, and sunshine. Valuers estimate that homeowners can expect a return on investment of 100-200% on the resale of their homes when they build an outdoor kitchen. Other benefits include keeping cooking smells outside, extending living spaces, and interaction while cooking instead of being stuck in your inside kitchen all alone. From simple to complex, outdoor kitchens will also add to the functionality of your home. They don’t need a large space, and can be built-in, or a more informal barbecue style. From outside your back door to a separate purpose-built enclave, an outdoor kitchen is a space for year-round enjoyment. Costs for creating an outdoor kitchen will vary depending on size, style, and features. If you enjoy spending time with friends and cooking outdoors, building an outdoor kitchen could be a great investment that will add value and convenience to your home for years to come.
Here are some suggestions: • Site undercover if possible, for all weather use. • For simple convenience, consider a classy barbecue, mini-fridge, and prep area. • Put in lights, plus a sound system, for all of those after-dark occasions. • Add a fire pit, and blankets for keeping warm in autumn and winter. • Include built-in bench space, cupboards, and a sink and running water. • Go all out with an oven, dishwasher, and refrigerator. • Don’t forget an outdoor table and seating.

PLAN FOR
sustainability When aiming for a sustainable build, planning is essential.
W
ork together with experienced architects and designers who share a passion for sustainability to ensure a smooth process and that no materials are wasted. When designing or renovating, consider adaptive reuse of existing structures. Transforming old buildings into new spaces may be more sustainable than starting from scratch. Seek out salvaged materials where possible. At local salvage yards you’ll be able to find cabinets, doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and flooring to incorporate in your build. Where you can’t find it salvaged, vote for a greener future with your wallet and seek out suppliers who prioritise the environment in their entire production cycle. Also ensure you choose building materials that are easily re-generated, such as bamboo. Consider avoiding these materials as much as possible: steel, aluminium, PVC, fiberglass insulation, treated wood, and glass.
“
When planning your build, also take time to consider renewable energy. Incorporate energy sources such as solar power, and use passive design strategies. Explore the possibility of incorporating green roofs, which involve growing vegetation atop your building. Green roofs contribute to insulation, absorb rainwater, provide additional green spaces, and as a bonus make for an eye-catching feature. Design your landscaping with native, drought-resistant plants. Local flora requires less water, enhances biodiversity, and supports the natural ecosystem. Conserve water by using low-flow bathroom fixtures and dual flush toilets. Install energy-efficient windows with double glazing to enhance insulation, reduce heat transfer, and minimise the need for artificial heating or cooling. Invest in smart home systems that enable energy monitoring and
Architecture at its best is an expression of individuality, serving and supporting a unique way of life and designed for site and context.

T management. This includes programmable thermostats, smart lighting, and energy-efficient home automation systems. For the furnishings of your home, seriously consider natural fibres. Great for environment, their subtle neutral colours mean your house will be a relaxing space, no matter the current trends. Think wool carpets, rugs, and blankets, complemented by rattan and wicker chairs and shelves. Use linen for curtains and bedding. Linen doesn’t only have a core sustainable aspect, it provides excellent cooling when sleeping. An alternative to consider is opting for a prefabricated home, the fast construction of which will save time and material waste. With some careful planning, a simple goal, and these tips, you’ll be right on track to create the most sustainable home on the block, and to inspire others to do the same.
hey engaged in fellmongering and pickling sheepskins and lambskins for export to the UK, as well as tanning cattle hide leathers for the local trade. Destroyed in a fire approximately 20 years later, the Bowron Brothers Tannery moved to Woolston and operated as a cattle hide processor until the late 1950s. After World War II Fred Bowron’s two sons, David and Nigel, joined the business. At this time they produced floor coverings and slipper-type footwear, and had around 40 employees. As tourism opened up in the country, wool-on lambskin rugs were a unique souvenir, and in the 1960s the company’s production of these grew. Their specialisation in the wool-on lamb and sheepskin products continued over the years and their range expanded to include car seat covers, furnishings and bed underlays. Today, Bowron Sheepskins’ team of 50 focus on the New Zealand market and are still crafting premium-grade sheepskin products. They take pride in delivering unmatched excellence in their products, which will help to transfer any space into a statement of style. bees LOOK AFTER OUR
New Zealand’s bees and natural pollinators are critically at risk, and some species are already listed as endangered, says Organic NZ.
H
oney bees are responsible for more than 75% of all global pollination – the whole world relies on honey bees for food. Yet, the same species that rely on honey bees for pollination and food production – humans – are responsible for killing them. How we can help our bees so they can help us? Bees need food. One of the easiest and best ways to do our bit and create a buzz in our gardens, on our decks, balconies and patios is to plant food for our bees. Bees that are well-fed are healthy and have a better chance of fending off sickness and disease. Here are some suggestions to help: Let your weeds and garden veggies flower and go to seed for the bees and butterflies to feast on. Throw seed bombs into any area of your garden, or into a lonely pot, and watch your garden grow. Skip the weed killer and garden chemicals, and opt for organic cider vinegar, which can address a wide range of garden concerns organically, and with zero toxins. Buy certified organic honey from reputable, registered organic beekeepers, who have to meet the strictest environmental criteria that protect and nurture our honey bees. Support your local organic artisans and producers where possible. Organic farming practices are the way of the future and will help us protect our precious natural resources. Learn more about living an organic lifestyle by following organic New Zealand icons such as Organic NZ.

ou can help by putting a bee hotel in your garden. Good bee hotels mimic the natural cavities that solitary bees would use, such as holes in wood or hollow plant stems. The bees you will attract to your bee hotel may include wool carder bees, leaf-cutter bees, and white-faced bees.
Top tips • Make sure the hotel has a roof to keep rain and other weather elements out of the holes. • Position your bee hotel in a sunny area at least one metre from the ground, and securely hang it from a wall or fence. • Keep the bee hotel dry to prevent mould. • Plant bee-friendly plants underneath the hotel. • Clean your bee hotel once per year in spring after all of the eggs have hatched.

Christmas tree keepers
Thousands of Christmas trees end up as landfill each year. Planting a potted Christmas tree and reusing it annually will reduce this number significantly.
T
rees have extensive lifespans for a reason, and instead of cutting one down each year, consider growing your own. Invest in a versatile and durable pot, and make your Christmas tree lifelong. Christmas is not constrained to chopped down pine tree branches, or fab fake tinsel varieties. Choosing a conifer, for example, will add a whole new dimension, including ongoing tree care, to your gardening repertoire. Once a Christmas tree, doesn’t mean always a Christmas tree. While it may have a designated purpose during the festive season, your tree can be redecorated to suit your garden during the quieter months. Lacing it with fairy lights is a simple yet effective alternative.
Here are some trees to consider: Douglas fir
The Douglas fir’s dense foliage and soft needles make it a great option for a forever Christmas tree. Fabulous for landscaping later
LANDSCAPE SUPPLIES
in life, this tree will provide a simple transition from Christmas to a regal garden showstopper.
Dwarf Alberta spruce
A common Christmas potted tree, the Dwarf Alberta spruce starts off as a cute miniature to decorate. It’s a slow grower, but can reach up to four metres, making it an easy continual Christmas tree for years before it finds a spot in the garden.
Patula pine
The Patula pine, or weeping pine, is an incredibly elegant version of the average pine tree. Small or medium, with reddish-brown bark to suit the season, the Patula needles are long and thin, but droop downwards, creating a unique look.
Care
Caring for any flora is a task, as any plant lover will know, yet it is most rewarding. For growth and strength to last more than one Christmas, keep your trees colder during the off-season. When inside, use a basin or secondary pot to capture water, and make sure to irrigate every few days.

My Strengths
With the year racing towards the Christmas break and Santa dusting off his red suit I thought I’d outline something I took part in recently that’s been enlightening, and I hope worthy of sharing. I’ve just completed a character strengths survey. No big deal, I can hear you say. Surely you know your own strengths. But sometimes you don’t – or the things you perceived to be strengths aren’t as high up the list as you’d envisaged. The actual survey was the VIA Character Strengths Survey. It’s easily accessible online, deemed to be psychometrically validated (which is a term that attests to a tool’s accuracy and meaning) and all very necessary when you consider the information you’ll be receiving. You can choose the free test, like me, rather than joining up to anything greater and after answering some 90-plus multi-choice questions you get your five top strengths. In fact, you actually get each of the 24 strengths identified as Top, Middle or Lesser. The strengths themselves are derived from Virtues originally defined by Peterson and Seligman, who co-authored Character Strengths and Virtues. These virtues are Wisdom, Courage,
Humanity, Justice, Temperance and Transcendence. Hailed as groundbreaking, this book was the culmination of a three-year research project involving 55 social scientists and was described as “descriptive not prescriptive, endeavouring to classify ingredients of goodness in humans across all cultures and nations.” I really like this idea and although it all sounds fairly lofty, the actual survey, once taken – and I’m encouraging everyone I know to do just that – shines a light on what makes you, you! So here were some of my top strengths, starting with number one. Drumroll and no surprise: Leadership followed by Kindness and Bravery. Bravery resonated deeply with me because it is deemed as acting on conviction, even if it’s unpopular, something that’s been a constant in my career. And here I’ll switch to the least of my strengths, Humour. Although I’d love to feign surprise, it’s a definite reminder to work on having more fun and trying to see the lighter side of life. And the benefits of knowing all of this? Quite simply, to build resilience and reduce stress and anxiety, whilst increasing your wellbeing. To continue to nurture the qualities that allow you to flourish and work on attributes that, once identified,

could be further developed. There you have it. With 24 strengths there’s more than enough for all of us to find the right fit and I’m sure if you decide to do it you won’t be disappointed. Now some reflections based on the year that’s been.
Travel I’m deeply committed to learning more about the world and this year I’ve seen lots of it. I’ve observed changes in climate and habitats, and seen up-close some of the consequences of this with travel to the Amazon, Antarctica and South Africa.
Family and Friends They are worthy of prioritizing and I’m so grateful for the love I share with both.
Kindness A little goes a long way and whether in business or in life I’m sure all of us could benefit from more. So, with that can I wish you a happy Christmas, encourage you to follow your heart at least a little and live your strengths. Who knows where they will take you. Lynette McFadden

Economic ambition
Christmas is just around the corner. Can you believe it! Every year seems to disappear quicker than the last.
A future that is good for people and planet drove our work on the Christchurch Economic Ambition, which sets out a long-term goal for Ōtautahi Christchurch to move towards being a regenerative economy.
A
s 2023 draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect that there is so much we can be proud of as a city. I was chuffed to see the figures from ChristchurchNZ which show hundreds of new people arriving each month wanting to call Christchurch home. We’re becoming the place to be. It’s great to see the city rolling out the Christmas decorations, setting up Christmas shop windows, and putting up fantastic Christmas installations in Cashel Mall and New Regent Street. December is a busy time for many of us, with a lot to do between now and Christmas Day. It’s a time when we get together and celebrate the year’s end with colleagues and friends, and share the year’s ups and downs before a well-deserved summer break. If you’re out shopping for gifts for your loved ones, make sure you try and support local businesses where you can and keep in mind it’s the thought that counts. For those staying around Christchurch over Christmas, be sure to visit some of the great walking tracks around the hills and coastline. We’re very lucky to live in a city that’s so close to nature and all that it offers. I’m looking forward to relaxing with my family and coming back refreshed in the New Year. Wishing you all good health and happiness over the summer break.
W
e currently live in an economy where most growth is powered by burning fossil fuels - a reasonably cheap, accessible resource that has also increased the standard of living. A transition will initiate new industries, technologies, jobs, and innovative ways of doing things - circular systems based on ‘reuse, repair, and repurposing’ resources rather ‘taking, making, and disposing’. It’s an ambition that we can’t accomplish alone. We need to band together, tell the same stories and inspire the community to embrace the same vision. We need city leaders to champion its purpose. We know that this will be an intergenerational journey and that even then, it is more a state of constant improvement than a fixed end goal. People and organisations need time to adapt and implement change, and our ambition is designed to support that. The good news is that Ōtautahi Christchurch is the best-positioned city in Aotearoa to achieve this transition. We, as a city and a community, have faced challenges and built back better with new infrastructure, a world-class city centre, and substantial potential for investment and growth. A balanced future that embraces people, nature, and innovation is going to be a team effort wrapped in resilience and collaboration. I couldn’t think of better place to do it.

Mining essential
International Chefs Day
The new Government needs to understand the role of mined minerals, including coal, as it picks up the renewable energy mantle.
As we countdown to Christmas, it is great to see our city buzzing with national and international delegates attending a variety of events we’ve hosted in our venue recently.
T
here will be no energy transition without minerals and we make that clear in our submission on Measures for transition to an expanded and highly renewable electricity system. We fully support the move to more renewable electricity generation. However, that doesn’t mean that New Zealand’s total electricity supply will, or should be, 100% renewable. We support cutting red tape to drive a surge of investment in renewable electricity generation, which we understand is likely to be a policy of the new Government. The Government also needs to recognise New Zealand has the potential to supply some of the minerals needed to build renewable electricity capability, and to signal to global investors that New Zealand is open for business when it comes to mining. Wind turbines, solar panels, and batteries are all made from mined minerals. The global demand for minerals to reach decarbonisation goals far exceeds supply. That means New Zealand needs to develop an appropriate critical minerals strategy, as many other countries have done, sooner rather than later. It’s important also that New Zealand coal production isn’t disrupted, as it is necessary to provide back-up to renewable electricity. This is needed for the times when the rain does not fall, the sun doesn’t shine, the wind doesn’t blow, and for when there are gas outages.
W
ith that comes the opportunity for our chefs at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre to showcase Canterbury’s finest food and beverages to the world and to form meaningful partnerships with these local businesses to support our community. In celebration of International Chefs Day in October, our chefs hatched a plan with our local free-range pig farmer from Poaka to invite Cholmondeley Children’s Centre tamariki for a fun day out to meet the pigs and explore the farm. For our chefs Des, Courtney, and Nick, this was the ideal way to share their passion and give back to a wonderful charity that works directly with families and children in the Canterbury region to provide short-term respite care at times of stress or crisis. This day was an opportunity to learn how a free-range pig farm runs, sustainable farming practices, and what their pigs are fed, including acorns and sweet chestnuts. Highlights for the tamariki were riding in the trailer around the farm and meeting Boris, the farm’s largest pig. It was a pleasure for our chefs to share this farm experience with these children and to prepare and enjoy a delicious lunch together. It’s heartwarming to see our team are genuinely dedicated to making a positive impact in our community. Christmas is a time of giving, and volunteering time, talent, and resources can truly make a difference. On behalf of the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre team, I wish you and your loved ones an enjoyable and safe festive season - Meri Kirihimete!

Top awards forTe Pae Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has been acknowledged with a 2023 New Zealand Public Architecture Award.
T
e Pae was funded by the Crown and delivered by the Government infrastructure delivery company, Rau Paenga. Kirstie McNulty, Rau Paenga’s General Manager of Te Pae Christchurch, emphasises the significant contribution by architects Woods Bagot in association with Warren and Mahoney, and Matapopore. “In a globally competitive sector such as conventions, and business events, first impressions matter. With its braided river façade, the architects have created a facility that is not only memorable for visitors, but also enhances the natural beauty around it for those walking past every day. “Having hosted over 400 events and attracted 160,000 people to date, it’s gratifying to see Te Pae’s appeal to the events industry matched with this recognition from the architectural
community,” she says. The Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects panel noted Te Pae Christchurch stands out for its focus on community building, rather than on being just a ‘big box’ convention centre. The convention centre was opened in December 2021 , at a cost of almost $450 million, and represents the Government’s single biggest contribution to the regeneration of the city. The centre has also been shortlisted in the Completed Buildings: Culture section at the 2023 World Architecture Festival Awards. Adding to its honours roll, the centre won two awards at the Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand Awards Dinner held in Dunedin in late November. Te Pae was awarded Medium Venue of the Year, and its Food and Beverage Operations Manager, Marzena Orlecka was awarded the title ‘Rising Star of the Year’.

Almost 300 entries were in the 2023 competition. Judges say that the calibre of entries continues to grow, and the level of quality and innovation continues to rise. Spanning across different price brackets, the awards recognise the best homes, renovations, and builders the industry has to offer In addition to pushing the boundaries with exquisite design, the judges observed several trends amongst this year’s entrants including strong mid-century modern architectural influence, the integration of the home office, and a rise of the window seat. House of the Year Judge and Architectural Designer Faye Pearson-Green comments, “Mid-century modern architecture is having a resurgence, we saw this a lot through the selection of materials, as people are gravitating to timber and plywood for their interior linings. “This influence was clear in many of the kitchens we judged, which featured plywood kitchen joinery and more in-built furniture throughout, rather than stand alone. Colour palettes, external architectural designs, and tile size for bathrooms and splash backs, are all further indicators that mid-century modern architecture is making a comeback. “We are also continuing to see a flow on effect from time spent at home during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Work from home set-ups are no longer make-shift offices at the dining room table, but areas designed specifically to encourage productive working. While window seats are being utilised as a place to escape and relax in the home.” Frost Architectural Builders

These include Freshwater Management in Aotearoa, Strategic Leadership, Integrated Farm to Catchment Scale Planning, GMP and Mitigation Tools and Technologies, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Engagement and Storytelling. “Whether a seasoned professional or a newcomer in catchment management, this toolkit offers a wealth
of information, knowledge, and tools, consolidating a comprehensive online library. It serves as a one-stop shop for everything catchment-related, and is regularly updated to provide the latest information. Dr Edgar expresses enthusiasm for the project, noting that it “strengthens the Trust’s 26-year legacy in Aotearoa. “The ACE program, with a focus on building the capabilities of catchment groups, is set to create a lasting impact on sustainable land management practices, and water quality improvements for generations to come,” he says. Strong foundations Building on Christchurch’s housing heritage, Brooksfield is helping to shape the future of the city for decades ahead with its classical Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian architecture.
B
rooksfield managing directors Vinny Holloway and Oli Hickman believe that to get the best homes, you must have the best architects and planners. That’s why they work with some of the best known architects in the world, first and foremost London’s Ben Penreath, who The Times of London called King Charles’ favourite architect, and whose accolades include residences for several British royals. Underpinning their design approach is the idea that everyone should LOVE where they live. Vinny, originally a builder, and Oli, a valuer, teamed up initially to help with the rebuild of Christchuch after the 2010-2011 earthquakes. They formed Brooksfield when they saw developers ‘robbing’ Christchurch of its beauty with thousands of mass-produced cookie-cutter houses, and selling them off to would-be investors. Brooksfield build new standalone homes and townhouses that echo the styles of decades long past, while at the same time are warm, comfortable and architecturally correct – inside and out – to the period that they represent. Incorporating modern technology and conveniences, Brooksfield’s homes are better for living in and for the environment, says Design & Experience Director Vinny. “Far too many people settle for a home that is just a

cookie cutter box like thousands of others. “That’s why we started Brooksfield. We set about building new homes, but not just any homes, homes you’d love to live in.” Inside every Brooksfield home you’ll find stone benchtops, tiled showers, plant-based paints, and argonfilled windows, New Zealand wool carpet, and wool insulation, to name just a few premium features. “We include solar power in almost all of our homes, saving you over 50% of your powerbill,” adds Vinny. That’s all part of Brooksfield’s commitment to creating sustainable homes that exceed people’s expectations without costing the earth. “We don’t cut corners. Your beautiful home will last for generations. This means premium and natural products such as Christchurch-made bricks (real clay, not just concrete like all the others), timber weatherboards (not synthetic look-a-likes), wool carpet, and insulation. We use quality fixtures and fittings inside that won’t be hanging loose in a couple of years.” Another advantage is the homes come turn-key ready. “At Brooksfield ‘ready to move in’ actually means that”, says Finance & Construction Director Oli. “All our homes are ready to live in or rent out at completion. Everything is included right down to the curtains, and landscaping.”

Beautiful classic homes

As pretty as a picture, and with all the architectural correctness of their predecessors, Brooksfield offers contemporary yet classical style living.
rom how they sit on the land, to how you live in them, each Brooksfield home – townhouse (terrace house) or standalone – is architecturally designed and comes on its own title, with a private carpark and/or garage and heavily planted outdoor courtyard. “Our homes celebrate you and enhance your lifestyle,” says Vinny. “We continually strive to create beautiful homes, completely different from the run of the mill ones – with flexible floorplans and an abundance of features to help you make the most of your home and the life you live in it.” Vinny adds that Brooksfield clients find it very refreshing that they are allowed to make changes. “It’s one of the many advantages of building with us. “Outside, mature plantings and thoughtfully designed paths and fences create private spaces with an established feel. Hundreds and hundreds of people tell us that we pour more care and attention into our homes than any other developer.” During the past five years, the company has built 450 homes, working on around 120 at a time.
Occupy or investment
C
urrent projects include nine ‘Cottage Revival’ homes at 15 and 17 Bishop Street in St Albans, and four at 195 Geraldine Street (pictured above). Designed with owner occupiers in mind, each home includes comfortable living spaces, well thought-out floor plans, and abundant amounts of storage space. Oli says that the banks are noticing that more and more investors are opting for a Brooksfield home, and ignoring the ‘experts’ who tell them investment is just about ‘the numbers’. “The smart investors are seeing that the most beautiful homes are a better investment. They value higher, and also have a higher resale value. “Each home features a private, sunny courtyard, and has a private car park, or internal access garage. They come with established plantings that include native flora to attract birds and enhance street appeal.

Go Georgian in Fendalton Restoring pre-quake, old-English style to Christchurch sets the scene for future heritage.
L
ooking for a classic character house a few years ago, Brooksfield managing director Vinny Holloway realised he could have a new house designed in an old way, and competitively priced. He also realised others had a similar vision. These days Brooksfield specialises in exactly those types of houses, producing future heritage homes, with attention to classic details, and the functionailty to cater for all manner of modern lifestyles. Brooksfield’s townhouses are priced from $600,000 to $800,000 for two-to-three bedroom builds. While in the past the company has built several multi-housing projects, now its focus (and the current trend) is for stand-alone, and also for single-storey homes. Another current project is a series of seven Colonial Georgian Revival homes in Fendalton, at 104 Glandovey Road, pictured top right, and centre. Brooksfield has worked in partnership with London-based architect Ben Pentreath to restore the spirit of pre-earthquake Fendalton with this series, says Vinny. The Greystones project is located between Fendalton and Merivale Mall. “Fendalton is a great option for essentials while Merivale offers highend fashion and lifestyle retail as well as bustling local bars and eateries,” explains Vinny. “The demand for property in Fendalton is driven by the convenient location and locality to amenities, particularly schooling. Fendalton is zoned for the best schools in Christchurch; Christchurch Boys’ High School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, and Fendalton Open Air School (primary). All of Christchurch’s private education options are also located nearby.” Fendalton is well connected to Christchurch International Airport via Memorial Ave, only a 10-minute drive. Vinny adds that the site’s existing character with its trees, shrubberies, and lawns, and its location beside the Wairarapa Stream, puts it amongst the city’s best and the houses have been positioned to make the most of it. “The existing significant trees and shrubberies will be the key to the design of the new gardens and each will have its own character. They will be sheltered, private and peaceful.”

Why we love our new homes
Colonial-style kitchen in Terrace House at Bishop St
I’ve recently moved into my Brooksfield home and I could not be happier with it; it has all the benefits of a new build but with the character and style of a well established property. “Brooksfield have been great to deal with from start to finish and I would highly recommend them. They’ve been so responsive throughout the process, providing regular updates and keeping me informed of progress, as well as being available for any post settlement queries. They’ve also be super accommodating with some customisations which has enabled me to put my stamp on it and make the house my perfect home. “Having looked at a number of different town house developments, I’m so pleased I chose Brooksfield. Their properties are definitely timeless and elegant and they really care about providing a quality end product. Thanks so much for my lovely home!” - Amie Robinson

I couldn’t be happier with the exceptional work done by Brooksfield property developers on my heritage home. They’ve truly created a piece of the UK right here for me in Christchurch, and I’m incredibly pleased with the result. I have had lots of compliments on the build, it turned out to be everything I wanted and more. I want to give a special shout-out to Laura, Mark, and Hamish for their outstanding dedication and expertise throughout the project.” - Stacey Lismore

Creating home-based memories Moving into your new-build home is really only the end of the first chapter. The story continues with the moments lived there, moments that translate into memories, which build on one another to create the tale of your life.
T
his is the philosophy that drives Ben Knudsen, owner of Canterbury building company Knuddy Homes. “We are a family business, and it is certainly not simply a 9-5 job for us,” says Ben. “We are all about creating the basis upon which your family fashions its lore and memories.” Keen to take his partner and their two-year-old daughter on adventurous expeditions, Ben built a maimai, complete with power and gas hot water. “I know how central it is for my family and friends to create memories, and in my business I seek to translate that to the homes of other families. For me, your home is not just somewhere that you sleep. It is where your heart is.” Ben and his team are based in Clarkville. “We have a rural and lifestyle block focus, and I definitely bring a farmer vibe to the process of creating new homes,” he says. Having an old school farmer style upbringing, Ben likes to do things on a handshake. “That’s how I am, and I believe in adding fun and joy to the serious technical side of building houses.”
While it’s all about the lifestyle for both Ben and his clients, “we don’t necessarily move slowly”, he adds. “We work hard, and then we play hard. We make memories in both areas, and we have time to smell the roses along the way too. It is important you really see what you have been working for.”
Bringing visions to reality A goal in launching the company was to show a different type of building; one that celebrates the process, as well as the result. “I also want to play my part in raising the next generation of young builders. I want to see that they are well trained, well paid, and looked after,” says Ben. His team enjoys building in a wide range of styles. “I personally love the architectural, and massive country style builds,” says Ben, “anything that is quirky, hand-made, and brings the apprentices to the next level.” Ensuring clients get what they dream of sees Ben sitting with his clients at the beginning. “I hear their vision, talk about what they love and the life they live. I’m focused on making sure there is an OMG in every corner. I want them constantly thrilled as they move around their new home, and that there is a wow factor that lasts.”

LIGHT UP your night
T
Outdoor lighting is an important aspect of overall design, and also safety.
he right fixtures or features can add ambiance, while also providing functional lighting for use and safety purposes. It can illuminate walkways, outdoor dining rooms, patios, pools, and structures such as pergolas. Pools, spas, and steps are key areas to illuminate for safety reasons. Highlighting architectural features, outdoor rooms, and feature plants also helps to add character. Purpose will dictate what type of lighting and fixture is needed.
Some may be permanently installed, others decorative for special occasions. If necessary, hire a registered electrician to install them.
Small spaces:
Try downlights such as illustrated here for a permanent fix, or create a wow factor for special occasions. Light them up with a string of small bulbs or fairy lights, either in rows, or crisscrossed. The intensity of illumination is determined by the bulbs you choose and the number of lights you use.
Wall sconces:
Permanent sconces provide illumination and décor, and are good for feature walls, and home entrances, and also for outdoor kitchens and dining areas. Look for cylinder lights that cast upward and downward beams of light.
Pool lighting:
Consider having LED lights installed underwater if you are having a pool built. They will add to its allure, and make it more easily visible for safety purposes.
