FROM THE EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Counting down the days

D

ecember always seems an unusually busy month with business and office parties, putting in extra hours leading up to taking a festive break and sorting out what to do

NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

with children when schools end for the year. This is a time when the adage ‘keep calm and carry on’ may be put to good use. Remember most work colleagues, clients and friends are all experiencing similar stress levels, so the trick is to try and not add to it. Stress kills. Hundreds of scientific studies have shown this to be the case so at times when we know we will be facing extra stress, try and find ways to alleviate it. Think of the coming days, lazing at home or on a beach, catching up with friends and family, and importantly not a digital device in sight.

Yes, I’m suggesting ditch the cell phone, unplug the computer and have a few days free from the internet and technology. Take the family along on the same journey. Life threatening it isn’t. Youngsters will survive without their internet fix for a few days and so will you. Embrace the outdoors, play cards, cricket or charades. Go somewhere – and such places do exist – where there is no internet or cell phone reception. All too soon your break will be over and you will be back into the reality of today’s busy lives, so plan to relax even just a little.

brighten,” says Lonnie. “The work has been inspired by the Ngāi Tahu creation story and the concept of Ahikā or keeping the home fires burning. These illuminated yellow and red

beads will combine to draw people into Te Pae Christchurch and help them feel welcome. “Each koru is made up of 109 individual strands, some as long as four metres. So, it has taken an army to thread them onto the wires. I’m so grateful to volunteers from the Christchurch Art Gallery who were able to lend a hand and a critical eye to the project.”

comedy, Flagons and Foxtrots, promises a nostalgic feel-good time for all. Penny Ashton’s Sense and Sensibility is a light-hearted romantic comedy that stays true to the classic Austen novel, with some gentle twists! The mood then changes dramatically with the international blockbuster thriller Girl on The Train, which takes the mainstage in May. The eagerly anticipated Potted Potter, which sees all seven Harry Potter books comedically ‘potted’

down into 70 hilarious minutes, returns for 2022 after its 2021 postponement. This is followed by the 2010 Pulitzer Prize and three-time Tony Award winning Rock Musical Next To Normal. Another Kiwi favourite saved from the 2021 line-up is The Māori Sidesteps who will bring soulful harmonies, satirical skits and superb song parodies to the mainstage in September. During this time kids (and big kids) can let it go with the international hit Disney’s Frozen JR. The Court Youth Company return to the stage with the thoughtprovoking drama Katzenmusik and, to lighten the mood a little, the legendary Court Jesters will also be back with their improvised comedy shows Scared Scriptless and The Early Early Late Show, the latter offering up regular hilarity for young audiences. The 2022 season concludes with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, featuring the soundtracks of many of her hit songs including “I Feel The Earth Move”, “It’s Too Late”, “You’ve Got A Friend” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”. Subscriptions are on sale now from courttheatre.org.nz and individual show tickets go on sale on December 13.

A woman with strong designs Multi award-winning Christchurch designer Angelique Armstrong talks to Metropol editor Lynda Papesch about juggling work, family and her ongoing love affair with interior design.

A

love of art was the catalyst for Angelique Armstrong to dive headlong into the world of interior design. A decade on from starting her own business, she’s well and truly earned her place at the top of her field with numerous accolades and awards. Even she admits 2021 has been an exceptional year for her and her business, with a string of outstanding achievements among her peers. This year alone, the trophy haul includes the Trends International Design Awards (TIDA) 2021 Bathroom of the Year award, the New Zealand Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) 2021 Commercial Design of the Year award, NKBA 2021 runner up for kitchen renovation of the year, and TIDA 2021 Home Renovation Award. The frontwoman for her own business and brand, Armstrong

Interiors, Angelique says her work fills her “with joy each and every day.” I have always loved art, design, fashion and interiors. I am 10 years in business and it has been a fantastic journey for me. I have grown on a personal level as well as in business.” Always good at art, and with an astute understanding of colour and composition, she uses her skills to create dream interiors for a multitude of clients. “I am passionate about what I do, and about creating the best possible interiors for each and every client. Creating multi-award winning interiors is based not only on my talent, my passion, my vision and drive but by teaming up with the best tradespeople and having good relations. “Supporting local is a big part of who Armstrong Interiors are.” As her business and reputation have grown, she has

never taken for granted the need for a personalised oneon-one interior design service. “Getting to know clients and being there for them every step on the way is paramount to designing award-winning interiors and family homes,” she says. “I also never take for granted the wonderful team that keeps projects on track and manages to source unique and one-off design pieces — thanks team!” Family and friends play an important role in her life. By far her biggest loves and successes are her children. “I never take my mother hat off so juggling business and family keeps me very busy.” When there’s time for rest and relaxation, Angelique says that chilling out and simply spending time with family and friends is a big part of who she is. “We are all pretty driven, and resting for us usually involves

keeping active, cooking and sharing a meal together, or simply all snuggling up, on a nice comfy couch of course, and watching a movie. Bliss.” She also finds it hard to stop creating so this too is a big part of her ‘me time’, usually in the form of painting with acrylics and oils, scenes and still life, and also doing up houses. Her latest project has been her family home, a timeless mid-century home, currently featuring on the front cover of

NZ House and Garden magazine. The house is also the project for which she won the TIDA 2021 NZ Best Renovation Award. Now that’s been completed, and will soon be put on the market (February 2022), she’s already on the hunt for a new project and plans to share that journey digitally. “For people who are interested in the how renovation and where do you start, I will be covering this renovation step-by-step on my Instagram, so watch this space.”

Angelique’s three top tips for interior design 1.

Be original to what you love and how you want to live in your home.

2.

Keep a neutral colour palette, changing accessories such as duvets and cushions for a new look.

3.

Do not over clutter.

Find your festive style With Christmas just around the corner, Metropol deputy editor Georgia Summerton chats to Superette co-founder Rickie Dee about wish lists, favourite trends, and top styling tips for festive parties.

What are some of your favourite summer trends in the new collections? • A pop of colour! • Feminine dresses are making a comeback. Excitingly, we’re starting to see flowing and voluminous dress shapes coming into the mix this season. The babydoll shift dress is back and perfect for that feminine daytime summer look. We also love bias-cut slip dresses for a sleek and sophisticated feel. • Oversized shirting is another big trend at the moment. They look great when worn loose and paired with a pair of pants or jeans. To complete the look, add a chunky gold necklace, a bold pair of sunglasses and a pair of heels to elevate your look instantly. What are your fashion musthaves for the festive season? • A special festive dress. We’re loving dresses in bright colours, metallics and dresses with fun cut-outs. • Classic gold jewellery works with any outfit. There’s lots of beautiful jewellery this season - big earrings, chunky gold chains and more understated, fine jewellery. I’m loving the full Superette x By Charlotte Christmas collab with the festive star detailing. • An elevated sneaker. A pair of Golden Goose sneakers are always my go-to. They can be worn casually during the day as well as in the evening with a more elevated, glam dress. • An oversized tote bag. A tote is always a go-to item to take you from place to place throughout summer - whether a picnic or barbeque - you can carry your whole life in there!

What’s on your fashion Christmas wish list? • The Leblon Delienne Mickey Mouse figurines - I love them all. • A pair of Bottega Veneta sunnies is for sure on my list - I love the new green colourway. • The Baldwin Blazer by Camilla and Marc is a beautiful investment piece. • The C&M Capri Striped Bag is such a classic tote and another great option for Summer. • The Superette letter necklaces are really beautiful - they make for the perfect gift for that someone special as they are personalised and feel extra meaningful.

Favourite options for a New Year’s Eve outfit? I think this year we’re all especially excited for New Year’s Eve. Our Chloe dress from our new Superette Poolside collection is the perfect summer party dress, paired with a pair of Golden Gooses or heels. Alternatively, for something a little more elevated, our new Manning Cartell Flame Tree Dress with a slide or heel is a winner.

Best advice for those who struggle putting outfits together? The biggest thing is not to overthink it. You want to be in something that’s comfortable and feels right for you. A great piece of denim is always a good place to start. A denim short, skirt or jean paired back with a tank and an open shirt over the top always works and is a good all-round outfit no matter your age or stage. Annie Bing is always great for these everyday styles - her pieces can be worn from work to the weekend. C&M tees are such a staple and are always a key favourite, this year in some beautiful sorbet tones.

Karen’s attitude enables her to deliver proven results time after time. I enjoy building relationships with my clients of all ages. I want to be by their side for the long-term and help them to protect & grow their wealth

T

he public art season opened last month and runs until January 14 next year. Eight new artworks from leading international and local artists are included, along with 15 legacy artworks via SCAPE’s public art walkways. The opening weekend saw the new works emerge in central Ōtautahi, based on the theme Shadows Cast, interpreting the shadow as a space of potential and mystery. Artists Louise Palmer and Aroha

Novak responded to the intertwining botanic and political histories of the Hagley Park area; Sione Monū, Janet Lilo, and Nabuqi transformed ready-made objects into new and promising things; and Bona Park, Olivia Webb, and Kate Newby all investigated the material of local built environments and the ways in which people move through them. Throughout their works, the shadow is ever present, either as a metaphorical force of the past, or as an echo of the material world we inhabit. This year will showcase two walkways. The first takes you around eight inspiring new artworks, winding through the city’s Cultural Precinct, Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park. The second lets you meander through the city and river paths and focuses on our 15 established legacy artworks. There’s an abundance of creativity to be seen, so grab a map, jump on scapepublicart.org.nz or download the SCAPE Public Art App, and take to the streets to see where the journey will lead you. For a deeper engagement, the app includes easy-tolisten audio from curator Jamie Hanton, reflecting on the artwork and the artists’ intentions.

Straka, an Auckland photographer, has recreated the look and feel of a once opulent and now run-down 1930s German hotel foyer on an elaborate stage set inside the museum. This set forms the backdrop for a series of Straka’s photographs, which feature a diverse cast of mysterious characters seeking sanctuary in the hotel. It also provides an opportunity for visitors to take their own photos and tell their own stories, to project their own dreams, desires, and anxieties onto Straka’s set.

Bookshop of adventure When a small independent bookstore consistently maintains an online inventory of every book in stock, with a full description of each book, you know customer service is its chief priority.

W

hen this same bookstore receives customer feedback, such as “It feels like a library here,” and “It wraps around you,” you know you’ve entered a bookshop like no other. The Page and Post Booksellers may be located in Geraldine but its name has grown well beyond the district, thanks to owners Joe and Belinda Roberts.

Belinda’s strong librarian background is reflected in the physical set-up, with dedicated sections for children, young adults, classics, adult fiction, poetry, memoirs, non-fiction and NZ focused. Artists and calligraphers have access to quality products here, such as paints from Maimeri, Classico, and Derivan, and exquisite European stationery, calligraphy

sets and inks. Unusual jigsaws challenge puzzle enthusiasts, and children love exploring the latest book releases available in the dedicated children’s section. “There are things here you won’t see elsewhere – lots of beautiful things displayed in a thoughtful, caring manner. It’s an adventure. That’s why we are a destination shop,” Belinda says. For a wraparound adventure, visit The Page and Post Booksellers, located at 26 Talbot Street, Geraldine or shop online. www.thepageandpost.co.nz

Looking at eye fatigue Tired? Wearing your glasses may help.

hat’s the advice from Dharshie Hughes of Anstice Optometrists Christchurch, for adults and youngsters too. Dharshie, optometrist and company director, says not wearing prescription glasses all day when advised to will make the eyes work harder. “You could be missing out on feeling fresher, more head focused, and in general less tired during the day,” she says. “Imagine gaining some of that energy back by just wearing your prescription specs as recommended by your optometrist. Dharshie advises to check with your optometrist to see if your eyes can make you feel tired if you don’t wear your specs as recommended. “Your solution could be staring you in the face!”

Bring on the pearl girl Pearls have been adored for millennia. They are the only gemstone to come from a living creature, making them one of the rarest jewels in the world. This traditional treasure is making a stylish and classic comeback, just in time for the holiday season.

B

aroque, blister, Tahitian, seed, cultured and paua pearls are just a few of the types that are found around the world. No matter where you are, they are the crème de la crème in style. Metropol shares the most on-trend ways to dangle, drape and wear your precious pearl pieces.

Single strand:

Wearing a single strand of pearls is the embodiment of less is more. Pair with a basic black dress for a look that is sharp and sophisticated or add to your denim-on-denim ensemble for an element of softness.

Layers:

Seen on many recent runways, this dramatic effect is bold and looks brilliant. Add multiple lengths of pearls as layers to achieve a true statement of style.

Accessorise:

Adorning your wrists, ears and hair are ways to express that extra pearl flair. Keep accessories to a minimum because small pearl pieces can make a big difference. A good pair of pearl earrings can last a lifetime.

The power of perfume

fashion

Winning fashion stakes PHOTOS BY JANE WYLES & IBK PHOTOGRAPHY

Despite looming Covid-19 restrictions and a day that started out with rain clouds en masse, the sun shone on Andree Callaghan who walked away as the Ladies Racewear winner at Riccarton Park Racecourse Fashion in the Field.

A

ndree received a deluxe prize package that included a night at The George Hotel and luxury vouchers to Lynn Woods and Nicola Quinn. Metropol’s Kia Dirkson caught up with Andree off the runway and on her horse, Truffle in North Canterbury.

What do you do for a living?

I work for Ravensdown as an Agri Manager servicing customers between the Waimakariri and Hurunui rivers in North Canterbury. I absolutely love my job thanks to all my awesome farmer customers.

What is your first horse racing memory?

My first memory of the races was going to the Orari races which are held pre-Christmas. I remember getting amongst the “Kiddies Tote” which paid out winnings in lollies. Understandably this got me hooked from a young age!

What are your hobbies and passions?

My love of horses and clothes is why I have fallen in love with races fashion. A day at the races combines two of my favourite things. I was very happy to buy my own horse this winter named Truffle. I have also picked up millinery and earlier in the year I did a course through Papanui High School Adult and Community Education run by Christchurch based milliner

30 9 December, 2021 Metropol

Roz Wilmott-Dalton. I went on to win at Wingatui Racecourse wearing the custom made hat I had made myself.

Tell me about your winning outfit inspiration and design.

I was inspired by Laura Campbell’s winning 2021 Ned Prix de Fashion dress and she advised that I needed to find an outfit that made me happy and that really resonated with me. Two months after purchasing the gradient tiered skirt (thanks to Covid-19 and shipping issues) I was immediately in love with what I pulled out of the courier bag. The quality was amazing, and the skirt certainly had that fun factor. My hat was made by Millinery by Mel based out of Queensland.

What advice do you have for future FITF other contestants?

If you’re considering entering a races fashion competition, I would really encourage you to do so! Although it can be quite a long and timeconsuming process to find the right pieces and pull the outfit together, it all pays off on race day when you’re excited to finally wear something you’ve been planning for months and you feel proud to showcase your final “look”.

2. 3.

Natural-looking makeup for older women includes a good foundation and some subtle enhancing, rather than trying to hide flaws. Here are some tips from Metropol.

4. 5.

When selecting a foundation or concealer, go a shade or two warmer to ensure you don’t look washed out. Extend coverage beyond the face. Use a foundation brush and blend very slightly around the neck so it doesn’t look obvious. Then add bronzer on the cheeks, under the cheekbone, down the sides of the nose, across the forehead, and under the jawline.

Sculpt and lift subtly

Instead of applying blusher on the apples of the cheeks, apply at the top of the cheekbone and then blend inward. Try muted rosy shades, and for extra impact, start with a cream formula then finish with a powder.

Play up the eyes

Make eyes look as big as possible, for a youthful look. Curl the lashes with an eyelash curler, starting right at the root. Then pick the right mascara. Avoid thickening formulas and clumpy lashes. Create a contrast between the eye colour and liner. Some browns can make you look tired, if it’s not the right shade. When applying eyeshadow, use a small eye brush, start from the outer corner of the eyes and work inwards, so that the colour gets gradually lighter. It’ll give you a bigger, wide-eyed look.

Go easy on brows

Focus on keeping the brows full naturally. You want to save every eyebrow hair you have, so instead of tweezing, fill in arches using a brown pencil, or visit one of the local beauty salons and brow specialists.

Balance out the lips

As you age, lips can become asymmetrical, and it can appear aging. You can balance out the mouth by using a lip pencil in a similar shade to your lips, using a soft ‘slip’ formula. To create symmetry, draw on four separate strokes, always starting from each of the four outer corners and drawing towards the Cupid’s bow or to the centre of the bottom lips. Apply lipstick in the same fashion, and then use a lip brush to slightly diffuse the edges for a softer look. Add a gloss if desired but not one that is too heavy or sticky.

Warm up the skin

beauty

The sooner the better As we age, so too, unfortunately, does our skin. For women, the complexion tends to lose its youthful radiance and can look dull and sallow.

A

ging skin becomes more transparent and fragile, and takes on a sagging appearance, due to loss of elastin. However, Wendy Barker of Beauty Progress says if women seek the right skin advice and the right products, much can be achieved in maintaining a healthy complexion. “Often women will visit the doctor with skin issues, rather than getting quality advice from skincare specialists.” Wendy says women can waste money cherry-picking products, many of which aren’t prescriptively formulated to work in synergy with the face or body, and can do more harm than good. Starting early is also crucial. “Women need to change their thought patterns and start looking after their skin in their 30s; leaving it any longer really is too late. Start early to keep skin soft, radiant, firm and wrinkle-free.” Wendy has had over 35 years in the beauty industry and trained in France under Dr. Albert Laporte, a pioneer in the field of cellular anti-ageing. For quality skincare advice, visit Beauty Progress at Unit 1 – 171 Waltham Road, Christchurch. www.beautyprogress.co.nz

Snoring versus sleep More than one-quarter of all adults aged 30-70 suffer from sleep apnoea (the leading cause of snoring) and men are twice as likely as women to have the disorder.

S

noring is a serious health condition, and taking that tough first step to recognise that there is an issue can cause anxiety for many people. Oraltech’s Denise Lim has been the sole South Island franchise owner for SnorexTM since 1995 and she will quickly put you at ease during your consultation and the wider process. “I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of people over the years to get a good night’s sleep, not to mention saving a few relationships,” she says. An initial appointment will answer your questions about the process, the

SnorexTM device, and involve taking impressions of your upper and lower teeth to create the specialised cast. No surgery is needed and a seven-day turnaround makes this an effective way to solve a big problem. The final product is high-quality German-engineered plastic that you place carefully in your mouth to keep the airway open and you sleeping soundly. Give yourself the gift of good sleep this holiday season. Book in early for the holidays to secure your customised SnorexTM device. Researching your gift Ongoing medical research is critical the world over and now, more than ever, as scientists battle to find vaccines and cures for all manner of conditions, diseases and one particular pandemic.

C

ovid-19 and all its variants – Beta, Delta and Omicron – have shown how important medical research is, and how much it is needed. At the forefront of such investigative study and analysis is the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF). A non-profit organisation, its focus is investing in world-class research to achieve better health and well-being outcomes for people through the prevention, treatment and ultimately the cure of life threatening and debilitating conditions. Earlier this year, CMRF awarded $865,000 to research topics such as Huntington’s Disease, tuberculosis, mental health, prostate and breast cancer. Record number of applications highlight the demand for health and medical research funding. Foundation Director Melissa Haberfield says researchers rely on securing funding to undertake their projects. Supporting Canterbury-based health and medical

research has been our mission for over 60 years. CMRF has proudly funded over $30 million in research projects, many of which have received global acknowledgement. Many of the researchers are eager to share the outcomes and breakthroughs of their projects and partner with CMRF to speak to community and service groups and at professional functions. “It’s testament to the hard work of our team and the dedication of our loyal supporters that CMRF is able to continue to offer our full range of research grants despite the Covid-19 related limitations in fundraising activity. Our donors and members know that research has a critical and long term impact on the health and wellbeing of our people and often choose to support CMRF’s work because a family member or close friend is suffering from a condition which research hopes to improve or cure. We welcome all donations, especially over the festive season, if you are looking to invest in life as a Christmas gift this year.”

The eight recipients of the CMRF 2021 Major Project Grant Round

CMRF in brief Since its beginnings in 1960, CMRF has funded more than $30 million in research into conditions such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart disease, bowel disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. The foundation is reliant on the goodwill and financial support of generous individuals, trusts and businesses. This support during the last 60 years means the foundation is able to award research grants in the order of $1 million, annually. Currently more than 37 CMRF funded research projects are underway, which are producing important findings and interim results.

Blending tradition with time WORDS BY LYNDA PAPESCH

Many families still celebrate long-established traditions such as Christmas pudding, with brandy sauce, trifle, Kiwi favourite Pavlova with whipped cream and strawberries, and classic fruit mince pies.

T

he origins of some, such as the Christmas pudding, date back to the 14th-century. In those days it was a sort of porridge known as ‘frumenty’, thickened with eggs, breadcrumbs, dried fruit and beer or spirits. The Victorians took it to the next level, fine-tuning it into the pudding many of us make today. Traditionally it has 13 ingredients – representing Jesus and his 12 disciples. These include raisins, currants, suet, brown sugar, breadcrumbs, citron, lemon peel, orange peel, flour, mixed spices, eggs, milk and brandy, the latter

being poured over the pudding and set alight. The flaming brandy is said to represent the passion of Christ. Christmas puddings were originally boiled in a muslin pudding cloth, although today they are often steamed in a bowl. Traditionally, every family member stirs the pudding three times and makes a secret wish. And a favourite tradition was to stir in small trinkets (some people still do). Whoever found the sixpence was said to have good fortune coming their way; a small crown denoted king or queen for the day.

If you like a pun with your blend, and let’s face it who doesn’t, ‘Tequiling me softly’ will get you humming. The wine selection is sourced from global wine producing regions large and small, and you will find something new to try and old favourites too. However, here in down under the warmer months are the season of bubbles and rose, and the team have excelled with the collection. Bubbles come from Reims, Epernay, Tours-sur-Marne, Côte d’Or, Piedmont, and Veneto while Central Otago steps up for New Zealand. In rosé, we Kiwis dominate with offerings from Hawke’s Bay, North Canterbury, Marlborough, and Nelson, with France close behind bringing Languedoc, Roussillon, and Côtes de Provence to the table. Days off mean leisurely brunch and Fiddlesticks has ensured theirs is delicious, creative, and yes, photogenic. The mimosa and espresso martini are optional, but you’ll be keen to try the kumara waffles and if it’s

Whisky is the go-go

Johnnie Walker Blue Having first tried this while interviewing French chef Manu Feidel, I was blown away by how fantastic a simple whisky shared with someone can be. This is top range from the world’s biggest whisky distiller. It earns its place and is worth the price.

Glenmorangie ‘The Cadboll’ Dessert-like flavours set the scene, evocative of the taste of sweet wines. Matured in superior French barriques which previously held wines such as muscat and semillon grapes, the resultant whisky is a delectably rich single malt.

Metropol writer Nicholas Henare enjoys a wee dram, especially on special occasions. Here are his picks from the wide selection at Big Daddy’s Liquor.

Growing up, I used to hook into grandad’s liquor cabinet, like most inquisitive children who are told not to touch that. Grandad liked peaty/ smokey whisky. I did not. It wasn’t until I’d matured a bit myself that I discovered that I’m a Glenmorangie man, Macallan if somebody is buying it for me. This month’s specials cover most people’s tastes. Summery, festive flair One of the joys of Christmas in New Zealand is the warm weather, and time spent outside soaking it up.

U

nlike most of the world who rug up inside and indulge in warming dishes, a Kiwi Christmas lunch or dinner is often a muddle of traditional dishes, barbeque, vibrant salads, fresh crayfish and seafood, and pavlova with beautiful season berries. Because of the summery spin

we give Christmas, it can be fun to stray from the traditional red, green and gold decorating and opt for something a little more rustic and relaxed for the table setting. If dining al fresco is an option this Christmas, try these tips for creating a beautiful, summery festive table.

Go green

Use a selection of greenery weaved into your table set up. Find some beautiful vines to place along the table runner, olive branches or Pohutukawa would work nicely as well.

Bright colours

Choose a few favourite colours and use those to brighten up your table. This could be in the form of flowers, placemats, a table runner or napkins. Pops of orange or yellow will lift the whole setting.

Fruity fun

Bowls of lemons or mandarins as decorative elements add a summery, almost Italian, look to a table setting. You could also try vine tomatoes for some pops of Christmas red.

Lights

Twinkling lights automatically give a festive feeling to a setting, so fairy lights woven down the table or candles spread out along the set-up are a must.

Your outdoor sanctuary Kiwis love the outdoors, especially during the warmer months when the sun is out, the barbeques are sizzling and we can sit back with family and friends to enjoy a cool, refreshing drink.

I

f you’re fortunate to have your own outdoor area, treat it as an extension of your internal living space. Big or small, whatever size your outdoor zone is, celebrate it! Consider what works for you and your family’s lifestyle – do you need an area where kids can entertain themselves? What will you use it for - if cooking is part of the brief then allow a safe, secluded space for a barbecue. Where does it receive the most sun? Do you need shade? Where can you place floor cushions or bean bags? Efficient seating is key to attracting people to this space so plan your seating, even if it’s with two chairs or an outdoor couch. Maybe you want to arrange it around a fireplace or garden feature? Whatever your design is, comfort and easy flow are your friends. creamy backdrop to the pink ombre outdoor lounge. Timber floors stained in Resene Colorwood Riverstone (Resene Woodsman Tiri if outdoors) lend a raw-look finish that resembles the rippling sand of the beach. This ombre screen is the focal point, its waterfall can be changed easily when you tire of them. Here we’ve used (from top to bottom) Resene Ebb, Resene Soothe, Resene Paper Doll, Resene Coral Tree and Resene Merino. The screen itself provides a decorative element, visually breaking up the space, and protection from the sun and shade if need be. Your outdoor area is likely to be private from the street, so treat it like your own sanctuary where you can sit with the birdsong and the sunshine, stamping your own style with paint in the way you like best.

reMarkable

Simply

If your desk is anything like many of the team at Metropol, there are bits of paper and sticky notes everywhere. Tech guru Ian Knott discovers that the reMarkable 2 paper tablet lives up to its name.

N

othing is quite like the tactile feel of pen and paper when it comes to taking notes, whether in a board meeting, doodling while on the phone, or making a shopping list. But paper gets lost, messy, torn and dog-eared, and not to mention the possible environmental repercussions. Then there’s tablets, some of which come with styluses and can also be used to take notes. But then you have to compete with screen glare, lack of sensitivity, and added distractions. Enter reMarkable, and more to the point, reMarkable 2 - the paper tablet incorporating the best of both worlds. The wafer-thin, 4.7mm thick reMarkable 2 looks and feels like actual paper, and writing on it has a textural feel that accurately mimics writing on paper with a pen. Think Kindle Paperwhite, but bigger (10.3” non-colour screen) and far more versatile. Take handwritten notes, and convert them into text if you want, review and mark-up documents including PDFs and

save them to Google Drive or Dropbox. There’s no backlight, so a full charge (USB-C) lasts two weeks, but you can’t read anything in the dark. Two types of pen (stylus) are bought separately. One has an eraser on the end, and the other requires selecting the eraser tool on screen. The only other must-have is a cover, and there are several stylish options available. It is important to note what reMarkable can’t do, and that’s surf the web, watch Netflix or any video whatsoever, or play any games (apart from noughts and crosses of course). It’s purely a digital replacement for your paper notepad, and will demand attention wherever you go. Granted, it’s a pricey notepad at just over $700, an extra $90-$180 for a pen, plus a protective cover on top of that, but once you start using the reMarkable 2, you’ll genuinely wonder how you ever survived without it. Clean up your desk, and save a tree or three.

reMarkable 2 PROS Looks and feels just like paper. Replaces the scraps and notes all over your desk. Demands attention from others. CONS Essential items are “add ons”, which really boosts the initial outlay.

Creating a brilliant first impression in your home often starts with your entrance hall or passage.

Colours are personal, so what’s right for one person may not be right for you. For inspiration, have a look at the colours elsewhere in your home, and those that feature most in the clothes you wear. Talk to an interior designer.

painting, a chandelier or an antique piece of furniture, and should be sympathetic to the rest of the home interior colours, style and era. Here are some suggestions from Metropol.

2. Include the ceiling and trim

A pop of colour on the ceiling or painted moulding will add a wow factor, especially when coordinated with a feature wallpaper. Another trick is to mix and match semi-gloss and flat paint finishes, the latter on the walls and the former on panelling and trim.

3. Embrace your dark side

While pale colours create a relaxing, harmonious look, darker dusky colours can soften the edges of the space and help blur the boundaries, also creating a sense of spaciousness.

Beautiful bathrooms to enjoy Decisions, decisions. There are five wellknown steps to making a decision. 1. Identify your goal, 2. Gather the information, 3. Consider the consequences, 4. Make the decision, 5. Evaluate your decision.

T

hese simple steps can be applied to practically anything. From what you’re going to wear today, to what you want in a new bathroom. That’s where Martin Lodge of Butterfield Bathroom Renovations comes in. He is the designer at the Christchurch company that has been creating beautiful bathrooms for 40 years. “There are a lot of things to bear in mind when renovating your bathroom. The size, shape, light conditions, the type of shower or bath, the fittings and fixtures,” says Martin. “We really are spoilt for choice as far as designs and colours and fittings go, but sometimes this can be overwhelming for people.” Martin and the rest of the team will guide customers on all the aspects of getting a bathroom that’s achievable, pleasing to the eye and has all the functionality they need.

Here are some things Martin says to think about in your bathroom decision-making process:

Planning. Before you start, if you’re considering DIY, think about the complexity of the job. Can you handle it? Think about whether you’ll need help with tiling, plumbing and electrical. • Know your budget and stick to it. • Hire a reliable and trustworthy project manager. • Accuracy. If you are doing the purchasing of fixtures and tiles, make sure you get the correct measurements.

Small space. Martin says it’s all about getting the balance right - the size and positioning of cabinets and the shower. Let lots of light in to open up a small bathroom. Install a skylight, if this is possible.

Simple bathroom renovation. Not all renovations have to be a massive undertaking. Martin has these quick and simple tips. • Know your budget and stick to it. • Change your fittings, not your fixtures. You can make a significant impact on the overall look and feel of your space. • Instead of replacing your vanity, try refurbishing your existing one by giving it a new paint job. • Limit the number of tiles and use paint instead. This is cost and time efficient.

Selecting the perfect shower. Before deciding on the shape and size, Martin says to think about these things: • The amount of maintenance and cleaning you’re willing to do. • How much will the shower be used? • Do you want a luxury shower experience, or are you an in-and-out shower user? • Who will be using the shower? Children, people with disabilities, or older people? There’s a lot more to consider and discuss about a bathroom renovation. Call Martin at Butterfield Bathroom Renovations 027 351 1601 or email martin@butterfield.co.nz. www.butterfieldbathrooms.co.nz Metropol 9 December, 2021 61

Culture What is it? At its best or most vital, I think of culture as a heartbeat – a pulse – providing purpose and substance for the people comprising the group. I imagine a massive tapestry in which every person has contributed to the pattern, leaving a distinct impression, and that all of this creates something tangible and recognizable for others wanting to be part of that culture. We are all influenced by culture. In the sporting arena, culture is easily evident in the polarized extremes of winning and losing. A great team will often demonstrate a strong culture enhanced by equally strong leadership – our national rugby team often comes to mind – whilst a team that is struggling to win or even connect will have nothing binding the players together. Perhaps it’s due to a preference for individual game plans and personal glory rather than teamwork based on shared success. Business is no different. Cultures within workplaces are critical in establishing values and beliefs, shared traditions and an identity based on songs, symbols and stories. When this goes well, it looks like a picture of personal responsibility combined with collective

success, feelings of being valued and the absence of a sense of entitlement. In an industry like real estate, collective group success can sometimes get replaced by more individualized pursuits, and leadership becomes an essential element in ensuring the culture isn’t altered because of this. Obvious success can be a sign that a culture is robust, but it’s what sits under the success that really needs identifying: Preparing and training – this means knowing what the goal is, having the right tools and being supported in your journey. This also requires agility. Sometimes the gameplan needs to change and you must be astute enough to do that. Caring about the person next to you – it seems obvious, but for some individuals this is really hard and it’s not on their radar … though it needs to be if the culture you are striving for is about lifting everyone and not just the chosen few. Having standards and values – ‘this is how we do it’, then doing it proudly and in the absolute best possible way. Remember, these levels won’t stand

still. They must be continually reviewed and improved on. Culture benefits from being dynamic; the opposite would mean stagnation. I’ve learnt even more about this lately, having spent time with some of New Zealand’s most renowned sporting leaders and legends. To a man, of which there were two (and one incredible woman), they confirmed the importance of culture, vision, leadership and mateship. And, finally, ‘what you do off field reflects how you play on field’. After all, life itself is a field, so to speak. So, there you have it. A tiny snapshot of what culture can mean. But the story needs one more question: what are you as an individual doing for the culture of the group or groups you belong to? Are you adding to its pulse or tapestry, or taking from it? Life is made better when you add.

he other week we were working on a classic courtyard garden with raised beds and irrigation, pavers and intensive massed planting. Today our focus is a pre-school activity area installing steps and platforms, bark, rocks and plants and even a race-car and bike track. We like to think outside the box, to be different. Anything a client can dream up we can build.”

Chandelier work of art Hana, a new artwork by Lonnie Hutchinson, will soon welcome visitors in the foyer of Te Pae Christchurch, ahead of the Convention Centre’s opening later this year.

T

he three koru-shaped, chandelier-like installations are made of 11,000 glass and acrylic beads and have a combined weight of just over a tonne. “Hana means to illuminate or

brighten,” says Lonnie.

Getting a green light

With the countdown to Christmas, many of us are looking forward to time off, and catching up with friends and family. This Christmas though is going to be different than in the past because it will be the first under the new Covid-19 Protection Framework – traffic lights as well as Christmas lights. Hopefully you will have received both doses of the vaccine – this is the key to being able to enjoy an as ‘normal’ as possible Christmas. If you are double vaccinated and have downloaded your vaccine passport, it will be much easier to enjoy festive catchups at our great hospitality venues across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. You will still be able to go to music festivals and other summertime events where

they are set up to scan you in. I encourage you to get out and support our hospitality, retail and tourism businesses over the summer. Many are still doing it tough and need our support. Whatever your plans over the holidays, and whatever the colour is on the traffic light where you are, make sure that you continue to use the NZ Covid tracer app to scan into places and wear a mask where you can’t keep your distance. Doing this will help limit the spread of Covid-19 and help keep our friends and whānau safe. My sincerest wish is that everyone has a safe, healthy, and holiday, returning refreshed for the year ahead.

Turning a corner

As I write my final Metropol column of the year, the last 12 months seem to have flown by. While 2021 has not been without its challenges, it is a source of great pride that the Canterbury business community continues to be seen as one of the most connected, collaborative and resilient regions in the country. That is because it is driven by the determined and innovative businesses that make Canterbury one of the leading regions for business – as reinforced by the record number of entries we received for our recent Westpac Champion Business Awards. Congratulations to our winners: visit westpacchampionawards. co.nz As we head toward the end of the year, it feels like we have turned a corner. I am optimistic that with most of the population now double-vaccinated against

Covid-19, the new ‘trafficlight’ system will enable us to get our businesses and economy back on track, and for us all to return to the way of life we enjoy as we embark on a new year. To keep our businesses open, and people employed, the key will be to ensure an enabling business environment – and with local Government elections, and policy developments such as Fair Pay Agreements and reforms to the Resource Management Act on the horizon for 2022, our work at The Chamber to advocate for local businesses has never been so important. Ki a koutou o te wā Kirihimete. Best wishes to you all for this Christmas season.

Accolades and advice

New centre opening

Ka rawe te mahi to the finalists and winners in the Westpac Champion Business Awards! Also ngā mihi nui to The Chamber for producing Aotearoa’s best business awards.

Christmas has come a little early at Ōtākaro as we get to open Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre on December 17.

It’s fantastic to see another crop of Canterbury businesses showcasing innovation and leadership. Many finalists have a focus on improved social and environmental outcomes, which tangibly grows competitiveness and business resilience, and contributes to regional prosperity. Every day, ChristchurchNZ’s economic development team works with businesses and people who challenge the status quo and explore a better future. We support them to grow innovation, collaboration and sustainability, and ultimately create highvalue jobs. Look at Christchurch’s innovation ecosystem. The 40+ businesses who received ChristchurchNZ funded support at Te Ōhaka

and ThincLab have attracted $17m of investment in the last financial year, grown more than 100 jobs and no doubt will be up for a Champion Award in the future! Our business attraction team provides Ōtautahi a head-start on attracting high-value employers and innovative businesses, currently working with around 50 organisations on potential relocation or expansion. We want to ensure their success is inclusive and enduring. An example is ChristchurchNZ’s mentoring for 60 Haeata and Linwood College rangatahi, helping them realise their aspirations of tertiary study and employment in Waitaha’s future-focused industries.

At close to $450m, this facility represents the Government’s single biggest contribution to the regeneration of the central city, and we are excited about letting people inside. With capacity to host 2000 people, Te Pae Christchurch will attract large events that our city hasn’t been able to host in the past. It also has the flexibility to hold multiple smaller events simultaneously, with 24 meeting rooms, a banquet hall and a soundproof dividing wall in the auditorium to hold concurrent 700-person sessions. Many other big event venues are vast shapeless, boxes located on the outskirts of cities. Here we have created this state-

of-the-art, purpose-built venue, right in the heart of our city centre. Located within walking distance of hotels, shops, bars and restaurants makes this very attractive for an event organiser. At the moment, Te Pae Christchurch has 100 confirmed events that will collectively bring more than 128,000 people into the city. Even allowing for the impact of Covid-19 on the travel and meetings sectors, it’s anticipated that Te Pae Christchurch will inject about $60m a year into the local economy. We’ll be holding a public open day at Te Pae Christchurch in the new year, and I encourage you all to come and have a look.

Double award for South Architects Christchurch-based South Architects took out two top honours at this year’s Architectural Design Awards.

n the Residential New Home over 300m2 category the award went to the Folded Roof Home by Craig South of South Architects. Built on a narrow street façade, this home was recognised for its use of a folded roof form to guide visitors up through the interior spaces toward a view of the Southern Alps. “This is a thoughtful and inventive design,” said the judges. “Dynamic space planning has been employed particularly well to resolve issues and exploit the full potential of this challenging site. The folded roof planes are set up to complement the spatial planning. “This is a scheme where three dimensions are needed to tell the story and where the elevational drawings struggle to illustrate how the folded roof form has been employed with great poise,” the judges said. The second award was in the Multi-Unit Dwelling Architectural Design category for the Peterborough Housing Co-operative. Built following the Canterbury earthquakes, the co-operative is based on the philosophy of co-housing, which emphasises

community space and connection while isolating car parking. “What we have here is a project that is both very wellexecuted and very timely. The result is a particularly wellconceived co-housing scheme that exemplifies the potential for an increasingly important approach to multi-unit living in New Zealand,” judges said.

Premium wall lining

Engineered by Juken New Zealand, Triboard TGV is a three-layered panel, with a wood strand core, sandwiched between MDF outer “skins”. The result is a clean-lined panel that has great resistance to impact. The dimensionally stable core provides superior screw holding ability, and the tongue and groove system allows for fast and easy installation. Award-winning interior design The Christchurch Style Revival by Greg Young and Andy McLeod of Young Architects has won the 2021 Resene Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award.

nfluenced by The Christchurch Style of architecture, the project was recognised by the ADNZ judging panel for updating the use of technology and engineering to the best practice wherever possible. “Careful and well-controlled articulation of a rich material palette has contributed to a very successful interior in this project that both respects and references the Christchurch style with a clear authority and understanding,” judges noted. “Concrete and timber sit alongside each other to set up the primary visual experience. Timber adds to the warmth and richness and this is successfully contrasted against the harder bleached surfaces that the concrete provides the base for. “Planning is also controlled particularly well. Interior to exterior flow is carefully crafted with a continuation of materials and excellent attention to detailing. Careful control of natural and artificial lighting is a final key to a very well-articulated solution that creates a set of refined interior spaces,” the judges said.

he project has also previously won an award for architect Craig South. A distinctive copper roof undulates across three separate wings of the house, catching the changing light, sun and shadows beneath it. The judges commented that the interplay between the freeform roof and the concrete create “an architectural drama that enlivens this house inside and out”.

Judges were also impressed by the craftsmanship in the home, saying that the curved plywood ceilings interacted flawlessly with the window joinery, and the wall-to-floor finishes were of the highest standard. “This building is inspiring; it features a clever design, meticulous attention to detail and an accurate construction,” they added.

Ready for change? Too much time spent staring at the same four walls can be a strong motivator for change. Buying is an option, but building or renovating are great ways to avoid a hot real estate market and make those changes too; even if the process can seem a little daunting.

S

andra Davies, an architectural designer, and Dean McFarlane, a project manager, both with engineering consultants Cook Costello, offer these suggestions to make the process less intimidating. “A great way to reduce that overwhelmed feeling on a renovation or build project is to delegate the management of it to someone else, someone who can take the project from concept to completion,” says Dean. “That’s where the likes of Cook Costello come into it. It’s a key part of my job to guide you through the consent process, work through any exemptions, all that sort of thing. I know the ins and outs of what the council requires which can be tricky for someone not dealing with it all the time. I am also able to recommend and manage contractors and specialist consultants.”

It’s important to work with professionals who can bring all your ideas together, working with what you have and what you want. “For me, that means working alongside the client giving them a personalised design experience while keeping within budget and site constraints,” says Sandra. Dean agrees, “I would say it’s key that regular updates are provided to the client; that we listen to their needs and wants and work with their best interests in mind.” Make sure that those offering advice and professional services have all the right qualifications and are backed by their industry groups. “Between Dean and I, we have over 40 years experience and are both licensed building practitioners. I am also an accredited Homestar Assessor and can provide design solutions to ensure your home is warmer, drier, healthier, and the running costs are lowered,” explains Sandra. For those who are worried about the money involved in a building or renovation project, Dean gives this final piece of advice. “Make yourself aware of the expected timelines and where the money is being spent and when it’ll be needed. I can work with you on this, helping with budgeting for bank progress payments or loan applications. Call us at Cook Costello. We have engineers across multiple disciplines and can collaboratively provide site analysis and planning, feasibility studies, concept design and detailing through to building consent submission taking your project from a plan to reality incorporating these ideals through the journey.” www.coco.co.nz Metropol 9 December, 2021 75

Christchurch pilot Iain McPhail likes to combine business with pleasure. He has been known to fly his aerobatic plane to provide quotes for roofing customers who are further afield.

he advocate for the Canterbury Recreational Aircraft Club is keen to get more people into the cockpit and is also keen on setting people straight on what to expect from a roofer. The dreaded C-word (Covid-19), has had a big influence on most businesses, but it’s good business practice that gets you through the hard times, not good luck.” Iain says that you have to make sure that you deliver what you say you’re going to. “It’s no secret that building supplies are an issue, but we have good relationships with our suppliers, so we know where the stock is. A unique riverbank perspective PHOTOS ANTHONY TURNHAM PHOTOGRAPHY

R

Change is the only constant and that is true for the city of Christchurch. However, the Avon/Otakaro River is a continuous presence as the landscape evolves around it, and for Marcus Stufkens, Director of Stufkens and Chambers Architects, the site on the riverbank where Cambridge Terrace meets Manchester Street needed a special and striking design.

iverbank Quarter is nestled within the green space of the PGC Memorial site, and the Avon River Precinct with its historic Edmonds Band Rotunda, wide boulevard, seating, and artworks. The Margaret Mahy playground and the famous poplar avenue is just across the street. A mixed-use project – 70 percent residential and 30 percent commercial – it’s a standout in urban design, inspired by the historic terraced houses of Melbourne. “We used brick in off-white painted

grit render, with splashes of stained cedar, and black eyebrows and perforated screen highlights,” says Marcus, “the planters set within façade recesses echo the classic narrow porch of the terraced houses.” Riverbank Quarter sits seamlessly within its environment and reflects Marcus’ philosophy that every project should have a unique perspective. It needs to reflect and balance clients’ desire with architectural flare. “This has been a satisfying project for us as architects, and for the Christchurch CBD.” www.sarchitects.co.nz

New Zealand faces challenges in meeting demands for key construction materials for infrastructure, with a risk of delays to major projects.

T

hat is one of the findings of a Te Waihanga Infrastructure Resources Study, published last month. The study looks at four key materials: aggregates such as gravel and stone, timber, concrete, and steel. Te Waihanga Chief Executive Ross Copland says New Zealand is blessed with an abundance of natural resources, but over time various constraints have emerged which are limiting the supply of these resources creating cost pressures, environmental challenges, and access issues for important infrastructure projects.

“New Zealand has a wealth of physical resources at its fingertips, but this study highlights the need to better manage them to ensure they are available for our critical infrastructure projects. Without ready access when they’re needed, we risk creating an unnecessary handbrake for the construction sector.” Te Waihanga has included recommendations for ensuring a secure supply of key materials in its recently released draft New Zealand Infrastructure Strategy. The full study and recommendations can be found on the Te Waihanga’s website.
