Grenadier. The new local in Cashmere.
4 August 4, 2022 Metropol
“People are seeing real value in hillside property again, and that’s creating genuine demand.”
ie n a l e M
On the 1st of July, after months of planning and behind-thescenes work, Harcourts Grenadier Cashmere – the newest office in the Grenadier network – officially opened its doors for business. It’s an incredibly exciting time for Branch Manager Melanie Webb, who joins the team following a successful period in management at Grenadier’s large City office. “There’s so much going on in their vibrant part of town right now”, she says. “People are seeing real value in hillside property again, and that’s creating genuine demand.” Those thoughts are echoed by Business Owner Andy Freeman, who feels the diversity of the area makes it the perfect spot for agents to grow their careers. “There’s such a wide audience in Cashmere”, says Andy. “From young professionals and growing families to blue-chip purchasers and older buyers, people from all demographics are gravitating to the area. The opportunity to be a part of those journeys is something we’re all looking forward to.” The new office has already attracted some high-quality talent, with a number of experienced agents having joined the team. That includes several Cashmere locals, all of whom are determined to see the business make a real contribution to the area.
“We’re much more than just a real estate office”, says Melanie. “We want to be an active part of the community; a group of high-energy individuals immersing ourselves in local events, supporting local businesses, and helping out where we can. An example of that commitment is the meeting room in the new office, which will be available for local organisations to use for free. “It’s a big space”, says Melanie. “And, when we’re not using it, we’d love for someone else to be utilizing the space. Local groups just need to get in touch if they want to book it, and we’ll make it happen.” While Grenadier Cashmere’s agents will be working with buyers and sellers right across the city, there will be a definite focus on the hillside (and surrounding) suburbs, something which Melanie believes is critical. “Property transactions on the hill come with their own layer of complexity. Buyers and sellers alike need to know they’ve got an expert in their corner when it comes to navigating that. We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our team have all the knowledge, and all the resources, they need to provide that peace of mind.” Harcourts Grenadier Cashmere is located at 81 Cashmere Road, above Zeroes Café. 81 Cashmere Road | 0800 15 30 30

Think independent lifestyle with help on hand. You’ve worked hard all your life, so you’ve earned the right to kick back a little. Why not lose the chores you don’t enjoy, so you’re free to spend your time exactly how you want? Love the lifestyle that assisted living in a serviced apartment can bring. Instead of cooking and cleaning, you’ll have time to finish that puzzle or for catching up with friends over a coffee.

Recyclable paper You may notice that this issue of Metropol is on gloss paper. Unfortunately the world-wide paper shortage has caught up with our printer, and our usual matt paper did not arrive in time for this issue. Rest assured, the gloss paper is recyclable. We will be back to NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019
matt which is also recyclable for our next issue. Meanwhile shortages of materials, and rising interest rates have some pundits predicting a recession even though many businesses locally are enjoying a resurgence and expansion in trading. This week I spoke with a central Christchurch hotelier who told me he’s been run off his feet. He’d expected business to start taking off, but not so fast or so much. “What recession?” he asked. National and global event bookings for the Garden City are filling fast, and hospitality businesses are clamouring for new and extra staff. Admittedly some businesses
are struggling, or experiencing downturns, yet that is always happening and there may be several factors that are influencing this. Not everyone is good at business, and not every business shutting up shop during the last two years can link it directly back to the Covid-19 pandemic. During a normal recession, people lose their jobs, yet we are seeing the reverse happening, with too many jobs and insufficient people. Yes, the cost of living has risen, and yes, interest rates are also jumping up, but neither of these, on their own or even together, mean we are in a recession. Stay positive!

extravaganza The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will perform a selection of the most exciting and beautiful works of the baroque era in Christchurch, at the James Hay Theatre on 26 August.
E
xtravaganza features works by 17th Century baroque masters Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Pietro Locatelli and JeanBaptiste Lully, groundbreaking composer Claude Bablon and Romantic era violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. Directed by NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matt Leppänen, and featuring NZSO Assistant Concertmaster and First Violinist Yuka Eguchi, Extravaganza is also performed in Wellington, Invercargill, Dunedin, Oamaru, Nelson and Blenheim in August. “I am thrilled to be playing two solo caprices by Paganini in the upcoming Extravaganza concert tour. I am sure
audiences will enjoy the synergy between Locatelli and Paganini,” Eguchi says. Italian composer and musician Locatelli is considered one of the first virtuoso violinists, who extended what the instrument could do. Extravaganza highlights Locatelli’s technical flair with two short pieces of music, known as caprices, from his Art of the Violin. Inspired by Locatelli, the great 18th and 19th Century violinist Paganini wrote 24 Caprices for Solo Violin. Among Italian-born French composer Lully’s many achievements, he was a major composer of comédie-ballet, a genre which fused a traditional comedic play with large chunks of music and dance. Extravaganza features several works from
Lully, including his best-known Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, with text by his good friend and frequent collaborator, the great French playwright Moliére. Fellow Frenchman Charpentier, who also worked with Moliére, was considered the most important French composer of his generation. Extravaganza features several of his works, including the revered Te Deum. The concert opens with a groundbreaking timpani work by Claude Bablon, written for the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV. It is one of the first pieces of music written for the timpani drum as a solo instrument and in Extravaganza it will be performed by NZSO Section Principal Timpani Laurence Reese.

Key to our city For three years now, Ross Steele has had the task of bringing Te Pae Christchurch to the attention of the rest of the world, especially those in the market for conferences. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch checks in to see what he’s been up to.
R
esponsible for successfully marketing Te Pae Christchurch as an international conferences, functions, and events venue, its general manager Ross Steele is always a busy man. Designated Ōtautahi Christchurch’s ‘gathering place’, the convention centre is deemed to be a key part of the regeneration of the city. Signs are there already that it is a catalyst for growth and development of the city, and a means of building lasting social, cultural and economic connections between the region and the world. Ross comes from a finance background, working with for the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, and then the Cairns Convention Centre in Queensland, before crossing the Tasman. “I was given the opportunity to be the inaugural general manager of Te Pae Christchurch,” he explains. “I have been in this role for over three years now from pre-opening through to our opening and have really enjoyed the challenge. “The people I have met in Christchurch

have been warm and welcoming and made my family feel very welcome here. This has been the most satisfying part of our journey to date,” he says. The proximity of Christchurch to everything that is beautiful in the South Island is a bonus for Ross. “From the beaches, the mountains, the Port Hills, to the towns around us including Lyttelton, Akaroa, Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs to name a few.” MARRIED TO A KIWI The Cardrona Pub has a special significance in the Steele family. “I married my Kiwi wife Vicki there, more than 25 years ago, and we have been coming annually to the South Island of New Zealand for over 30 years now, so we have seen a fair bit of the region,” he laughs. “To have the chance to live here has been wonderful. “I love visiting Diamond Harbour and Banks Peninsula; I love the ruggedness of the beaches around Waimairi, the walks up the Port Hills and the multitude of golf courses. I also love the fact that the inner city is starting to evolve and liven up post Covid-19, and will continue to do so in
the future. Christchurch is really coming of age.” Looking ahead, Ross says it is important that we are all proud of our city. “We need to puff our chest out and let everyone know how great it is, and what it has to offer. “It has all of the great infrastructure that you need, including a progressive international airport, some really nice hotels, restaurants, new bars, good shopping and the amenities are being added to continually.” ECONOMIC PROJECTIONS Ernst and Young have projected that Te Pae Christchurch will inject about $600 million of economic impact into the regional economy in its first 10 years of its operation. Ross says they are already hearing from businesses around Te Pae who are benefiting from the delegates and visitors coming to events at the centre. “Local cafes and restaurants who have told us about a significant upswing in business, hotels who have had an increase in room nights when there has been an event on, and others.”
ABOUT ROSS STEELE Ross was appointed general manager of Te Pae Christchurch in early 2019, bringing more than 20 years’ convention centre experience to the role. Prior to joining Te Pae Christchurch, Ross managed the Cairns Convention Centre in Queensland for 12 years. Cairns Convention Centre was regularly voted among the top convention centres in the world (AIPC World’s Best Congress Centre Awards), including World’s Best Congress Centre in 2014. Te Pae Christchurch is one of six international finalists in this year’s innovation awards category for its Activation Hub Initiative.

or Kerry Jackson, founder of M.M Linen, it was a challenge she was up for. With more than 20 years’ experience as head buyer of bed linen, furniture and textiles for prominent New Zealand retailers, such as Ezibuy and Ballantynes, she figured it was time to make the move. “My senior buying role transitioned from commuting to Auckland on a fortnightly basis to having to live there permanently. But I loved Christchurch — my family and friends were there — so I knew the only way to create my own destiny was to utilise my career experience to its fullest potential,” Kerry explains. M.M. Linen is renowned for its lush botanic themed prints that evoke the desire to fall into a fantastical world where flowers and nature soothe weary spirits and bring a sense of tranquil contentment. Kerry has the highest praise for the brand’s artists. “Each of our artists have their own unique “hand-writing”, even when briefed by me, their works stand alone.” She shares some insight as to the process involved behind the scenes, from point of conception through to the finished product. “Our Christchurch-based team discuss colour and designs trends regularly, and every six months collections are curated and designed by our amazing artists who are based around the globe. We love working in a creative space surrounded by mood-boards, colour, and gorgeous fabrics.” “As our artwork is so beautiful and unique, we are always looking at new product ideas to feature the designs, or we might add striking textiles of velvet, or linen and cotton, to complement them and create exciting
seasonal collections.” Available in 100 NZ stores and over 150 in Australia, including Myer, M. M. Linen has forged further afield to the USA, South Africa, John Lewis in the UK (with Next and Marks & Spencer recently added to its UK outlets), along with several high-end stores in the United Arab Emirates. Kerry shows no signs of slowing down on the global scene either. January 2023 sees M.M. Linen showcasing at the prestigious Heimtextil, in Frankfurt, Germany. “This is where we hope to attract stockists from other countries we are not currently selling into. “For a New Zealand brand to feature alongside renowned world leaders in home textiles is fantastic.” Fiercely proud of her Cantabrian roots, Kerry hasn’t forgotten where she learnt her trade and is thrilled that a second M.M. Linen store will soon launch in her own hometown, the first was in Auckland two years ago. “It’s super exciting. Not only is it in my local area, but it brings together our head office and wholesale studio. With our new retail store right next door, the synergies will be amazing.” Not shy to share the fact that at 60 years of age she has achieved major success in her career, it seems fitting to ask Kerry what advice she would give to all those people out there who have a grand business vision, but don’t know how to realise it. “Do your research and have a fabulous team of supporters to give you the confidence and advice to just do it! Be bold. It’s never too late, and you are never too old to realise your dreams,” she says. And then, with pure Kerry panache, she cuts to the chase: “The grass is greener where you water it”.

90 Nine decades helping youth
Youthtown turns 90 this year; a celebratory milestone as the organisation continues its work to help young people throughout Aotearoa.
R
enowned for before, after school and holiday programmes, Youthtown today supports young people with a wide range of programmes from camps, sports teams, expeditions, to physical training programmes, job skills and learner driving. Working with more than 2500 young people annually, it partners with local schools and community spaces across New Zealand, including in Christchurch. The organisation’s Chief Executive Fay Amaral says that without Youthtown’s services, many children and their families would face
barriers to connecting with positive care options and stimulating youth development programmes. “Young people today have a whole lot going on, and we want to walk alongside them to ensure they have the best opportunity to thrive. We invest in spaces, hubs, and resources to build a sense of belonging and community, with fun and creative environments.” Youthtown originated in 1932, in Parnell, with a small gym set-up aimed at getting boys off the street and into learning a new skill.

Job hunting can be daunting, especially if you’ve been unemployed or in the same role for a long time. It’s easy to forget your value, question your skills and lose confidence — mindsets that ChristchurchNZ has identified as a key reason why approximately 20,000 women in Canterbury are either underemployed or underutilised in the workforce.

that led her to her job as a software engineer at Jade Software in Ōtautahi. “I knew that retraining would give me the foundation I needed and an advantage to secure a job I loved. Especially in tech, it’s always changing and you need to keep up with the current trends.” Although the tech industry is maledominated, she says there is a good balance at Jade and it’s a really supportive environment for women – in fact, she feels empowered.
“Mums probably get more done in a day than a lot of people get done in three. We’re really driven. We’ve got a set amount of time and we just get on with it. And that is starting to become more valued and appreciated.” For Angela, going back to work after having kids wasn’t a decision she made lightly. Having time for family and her community was a top priority and she assumed her type of role in architecture wouldn’t allow for a work/life balance. But as she discovered, times have changed. She took a part-time role at Warren and Mahoney who embrace a family-friendly
culture and provides Angela the flexibility she needs. “Mums probably get more done in a day than a lot of people get done in three. We’re really driven. We’ve got a set amount of time and we just get on with it. And that is starting to become more valued and appreciated.” Angela says you have to back yourself. Women are prone to imposter syndrome so it’s really important that you get the right support and information to help get back on your feet. ChristchurchNZ CEO Ali Adams says PowerUp comes at a critical time for employers as the city is experiencing a labour shortage. “The campaign was a direct result of businesses crying out for more staff and the enormous untapped potential of attracting more women into the workforce. Our research shows that practical adjustments, such as flexible working or meaningful roles, can be real drivers for women when choosing employment,” says Adams. The deep pool of female talent available in Christchurch has the potential to help many employers ease the squeeze of the tight labour market, making PowerUp a campaign of significant value for Ōtautahi. omen who want to re-enter the workforce after an extended break, who’d like to work more hours, or who would like to change direction often lack the information and inspiration to take the first step on their career journey. And it’s not just about finding a job. It’s about finding a career that’s right for them, filled with value, enjoyment, and purpose. This is the driver for ChristchurchNZ’s PowerUp campaign that is focused on supporting Canterbury women into work and arming them with knowledge and tools to make informed choices along their career paths. It is centred around a regionalised information hub full of expert advice from a career coach, easy-to-read information on support agencies, networks, and opportunities plus relatable stories led by four women who have overcome various challenges on their career journeys. Gazelle, originally from the Philippines, spent eight years in a nursing career while becoming mum to a daughter and stepson. After moving to Christchurch in May 2016, she discovered a passion for tech but thought it was too late to start all over again in a career that she didn’t have any clue about. celebration Saying goodbye to a loved one by celebrating their life has become more common during recent times.
A
celebration of life service is usually a ceremony where people gather to celebrate the unique life of the deceased, and they are commonly held after physical remains have been cared for through burial or cremation. More and more families are choosing to hold ceremonies that celebrate the life and personality of their loved one, as an alternative to a traditional funeral ceremony,
although the latter are still a popular way to say goodbye. The best way to start planning a celebration of life is to begin doing so while your loved one is still with you. This way you have the chance to ask them, “How do you want to be remembered?”, “what are you most passionate about?”, and “what would you like your celebration of life to include?” This way you are not left guessing what your loved one would’ve wanted when it comes time to plan the celebration of life service.
of life
Personal choice Both funerals and celebrations of life serve as a way for families to acknowledge the passing of a loved one and say goodbye. However, there are many contrasts between the two ceremonies which commonly lead a family to choose one over the other. A traditional funeral follows common rituals and customs, and tends to be a more structured ceremony. Usually, it has four main parts: the visitation, the funeral
service, the committal service, and the funeral reception. For those looking for a sense of spirituality, religion, or tradition, a funeral service fits the bill. A celebration of life ceremony, offers more freedom in the planning process, and can include whatever family members think is appropriate to represent and honour their loved one. It tells the story of their life, and what made them special.
The freedom to do things your way Mainland Crematorium specialise in direct cremations, providing excellent service and care at an affordable price. A Direct Cremation is when the deceased is taken directly to the crematorium and cremated, surpassing the need for a traditional funeral director. Not only is this the most economical option but it is also the simplest.
With the increasing cost of funeral services, many people are now choosing to simplify this process with a direct cremation. At Mainland Crematorium we offer a direct cremation alongside the flexibility and freedom for families to customise a service their own way.

Grieving with dignity Experiencing the loss of a loved one can leave you in shock and unsure of what you need to do. Contacting a funeral director can relieve some of this stress.
C
harlie McKenzie of SI Funerals says that many times after his initial contact with family members, they thank him for taking so much stress from them. Charlie explains that a funeral director has the resources to gain access to medical certificates as to the cause of death. If the death is subject to a coroner’s investigation, the funeral home has to wait for the coroner to grant the release of the loved one before a family’s wishes can be carried out.
If the loved one is at a hospital, the mortuary staff there notify the funeral home as to when the deceased can be taken into their care. Should the death have occurred at a rest home, or private residence, a clearance from a doctor is required prior to the uplifting of the loved one. “A funeral director has experience of all of these scenarios and can look after each situation leaving a family time to grieve with dignity,” Charlie says. Your chosen funeral director will seek
your wishes as to the way you would like to celebrate the life of your loved one. Financial help for a funeral may be available through a WINZ grant or through ACC.

uneral Director Betsy Williams is the kaitiaki of Manaakitanga Funeral Services. Of Ngāi Tahu descent, she is a well-known identity amongst a number of iwi. It is not uncommon for Betsy to receive a “haere mai ki te kaput ti” from a whānau member saying “a Māori Funeral Director - just what we needed”. Inherent in the name of the company, “Manaakitanga” means the process of showing respect, generosity and care for the people who use their services, their whānau and communities. It also means showing respect and care for their information and stories.

Betsy is more than happy to visit groups or any marae to korero on what the company can offer and on her experience as a Funeral Director. “We provide low-cost funeral burial packages and cremations. Prearrangements are very welcome,” says Betsy. Betsy’s colleague, Funeral Director Charlie McKenzie serves on the executive of Tuhoe ki Waitaha. His wife Diane (a director of the company) is of Ngāpuhi descent. Rangihau Te Moana serves as the kaumātua. Care and T compassion Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be one of the hardest things someone will ever experience. At such a difficult time it is comforting to be offered care and compassion through the professional experience of qualified funeral directors.
he team of Jamie, Mike, Nick and Nina at Simplicity Funerals, Christchurch all have a passion for helping people to honour lives. “We bring families, friends and communities together to say goodbye on their terms and within their means,” says Jamie Harvey, manager of Simplicity Funerals. “We work closely with families providing gentle guidance and respect at a time when it is needed most. This includes a range of pricing plans to suit the individual needs and means of a family and that certainly relieves a good deal of stress.” Indeed Simplicity Funerals can help arrange whatever style of funeral a family may want, in any
venue people feel comfortable. “More and more these days families are looking for simple, cost effective options, but they also want to create unique and personalised farewells. “A home, a church, a crematorium chapel, the graveside at the cemetery, or someplace quite different – it’s all possible. We can also have family gatherings in our on-site ‘Memories Lounge’ for a small group,” says Jamie. Simplicity Funerals has its own range of caskets and urns as well as a lovely range of keepsake mementos and jewellery. The company is a member of the Funeral Directors Association.

hen the hammer goes down on this wellestablished Cust business, the lucky new owners receive the key to an address that has seen one hundred years of shopkeepers plying their trade. Route 72 Café Bar Emporium began as a butchery, built in 1922 for Samuel Wood who, 24 years later, sold the butchery to his son, Garth. Johnny Dekker bought the business in 1960 but a fire closed the premises in 1965. In 1973 it reopened as a fibreglass factory under the ownership of Mr A. G. Carter. Mr W. Greenaway bought the business in 1977 and it became a rubber band factory. Present owners, Annette and Steve Thomson, opened The Country Provedore in 1992, selling herbal oils, teas, dried herbs, plants and giftware. A café was added in 2006, which prompted the name change to what it is known as today. Annette says their 30 years stewardship is down to the great people they meet every day – both regulars and travellers. “But it’s time to have a rest now and choose how to spend our time on a daily basis; it’s time for our kids and grandkids.”

he dynamic real estate mother and daughter duo, Marijke and Amy Sheppard, are a driving force in providing that next level of service, commitment and professionalism. It is not often you find team members so in tune, their personalities complementing each other while matching skills and strengths. Marijke entered the Real Estate industry seven years ago while looking for her next challenge in life. Previously her working accomplishments consisted of four years plus in telecommunications, a stint in hospitality while living in Hanmer Springs, and most recently 16 years as a teacher. Along the way she has gained skills hard to emulate. You’ll also find she’s probably taught you or one of your children at some point! Amy, on the other hand, has completed a Bachelor of Design which led to her building websites and dabbling in some coding. However, this was not enough for this outgoing creative young person. She found working in the IT industry lacked the people connection she needed, and after a conversation with Marijke decided to join the team and bite the bullet to complete her licence. Three years later and the team is still going strong!

d chugging pints of Marienbad water as penance for his fivecourse breakfast. Or it might invoke modern day Baden-Baden, where the Beckhams could run into Beyonce, with the Obamas due by boat across the lake any minute. Whatever your vision of a mountain spa town, chances are it screams luxury, and chances also are it whispers, “not this year anyway”. The proud tradition of “taking the waters” and relaxing in the crisp mountain air has been on our very doorstep since 1859. And what’s more, our mountain spa town is very dog friendly too. For those of us of a certain age, Hanmer Springs is home of the day trip. The ride in the back seat of the Holden or the Falcon, the soak in the hot pools, and the ritual scaling of Conical Hill. For us, the town has always been there, resulting in a teensy tendency to take it for granted. That’s a mistake, because Hanmer Springs is a natural wonder. It is redolent with history, and more capable than ever of soothing weary bodies, boosting sagging spirits. Its cheery holiday atmosphere helping with the very clear and present reality of recovering from whatever Covid-19 has thrown at you. The hot springs of the Hanmer Basin were
well known to Māori, and then stumbled upon by local runholder William Jones in 1859. The first baths were opened in 1883. Considered a healthier option, it transpires patrons swam in their birthday suits in separated sessions. A skirt or pair of trousers was hoisted on a pole by the dressing shed, to avoid awkward errors. A sanatorium was built in 1897, and visitors could bathe, inhale steam, or drink water from the springs. The Sanatorium burnt down in 1914 and was replaced with Queen Mary hospital, a facility idyllically located for the recovery of wounded and shell-shocked veterans of WW1. The facility extended its care to those with joint disorders, psychiatric illnesses, and alcoholism. Today Hanmer Springs is still a sanctuary, with the bonus of gorgeous dining choices, many with outdoor dog-friendly areas. The accommodation on offer is extensive, ranges in price, and there are plenty of dog-friendly options for overnight stays. Wedding and conference venues abound. The thermal pools have changed beyond recognition since the early days. The whole family is catered for, plus The Spa carries on the therapeutic tradition. The mountain biking is sublime, and the forest walking options seem endless. And of course, that iconic walk up to the top of Conical Hill? Your four-legged friend can tag along too.

t’s quirky and innovative and located in the tranquil natural beauty and peacefulness of Banks Peninsula. The tall, silver corrugated iron structures of SiloStay are unmissable. Their design is unique and ingenious and while the silos may be industrial in look, they are definitely luxury in feel. That’s because these buildings are now luxurious self-contained accommodation units that guests refer to as “amazing” and “SiloCosy” in the winter and “SiloCool” all year round. There are nine silo apartments in total – eight suitable for couples and one which is fully wheelchair accessible. Each one is set up for self-catering with a kitchenette of a small fridge microwave and two-element cooking, all custom-designed for the novel curved walls. Prefer not to cook? “SilOwners”, Rob and Helen Fowler can organise a SiloFeast platter and there are also dining options to walk to on either side of the accommodation complex. Importantly for its owners, SiloStay is ecofriendly with a low footprint and it utilises sustainable wastewater and heating systems. There is even a worm farm on site. This is accommodation like no other – bespoke and stylish – the perfect base to explore all that Banks Peninsula has to offer.

n recent collections, the handbag has been reinvented in a way that strays from simple monochrome designs to fun, colourful styles that represent a new era of fashion freedom. Fashion houses such as Jacquemus and Bottega Veneta have given eccentric handbags a platform, which has now been passed down through designers to offer not only the must-have classics but bags with more character. The right work bag is a must-have for making every boring day better. A tote bag large enough for the office, plane, or a weekend shopping spree is essential in your handbag collection, leaving you feeling confident and ready to power through whatever comes your way. Opt for classic hues that are easily paired with your wardrobe such as black, beige, tan, or white. This handbag will see a lot of wear, so be sure to invest in good quality and spacious pieces to avoid the damage of cramming your
belongings. For day-to-day wear, think classic yet detailed, a timeless handbag that suits your style with the ability to fit all of your everyday accessories. Features such as quilted or crocodile leather, chains, or embellishments are a great way to give off a look of sophistication and elegance while keeping it classic. Consider a handbag with both a shoulder strap and a handle for multiple ways of use. The final handbag in your collection should be the one you are most excited to bring out and show off. A mini bag with flair is the perfect pair for date nights, drinks, and special occasions. Ensure your choice is bold and has space for the necessities while keeping it on the smaller side to balance the tone. A different shape, style or colour is an easy way to incorporate character into your outfit while ensuring your handbag is of leather or similar material to maintain sophistication.

ressing for work doesn’t need to mean plain pant suits and all neutral colour palettes. You can still have fun with your corporate wardrobe while looking smart and put together. There are a few key tips that will help you build a wardrobe that is suitable for the office but also has some of your personality and style too. Keeping things tailored and well-fitted is always going to ensure you look put together. Baggy and oversized clothing is best kept for casual outfitting. Good trousers and a blazer are essential, and by keeping one of them neutral, you can opt for a bit of colour or pattern with the other. Shirts and blouses are also essential, and it’s handy to have a few to rotate with. Try some in bold colours, or some with details like a neck tie or balloon sleeves. green Wonderful winter locks Ready to take care of all your hair needs is the friendly, experienced team at Haar Design.
Peridot, spinel and sardonyx are the three birthstones for August.
T
he first of these, peridot is known for being formed under extreme conditions, found in hardened lava and also in meteorite fragments. The preferred colour is a pure “grass” green without any hint of yellow or brown, although peridots range in colour from yellowish green to greenish yellow. The gem variety of the mineral olivine, it is sometimes mistaken for other gems such as topaz and emerald because of its colour spectrum. The word “peridot” comes from the Arabic faridat, meaning gem, and in times gone by it was used as a protective talisman, shielding the owner from evil spirits and “terrors of the night”. In addition to being an August birthstone, it is also the gem given to celebrate a 16th wedding anniversary. Most of the peridot used in jewellery today comes from a variety of sources, including China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Tanzania, Vietnam and Arizona in the United States. Peridot has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it softer than many gemstones, and not suitable for hard wear. Cleaning with steam or an ultrasonic cleaner is not recommended. Use a soft bristle brush and warm soapy water to clean.

Did you know… When it comes to skin care, hyaluronic acid is touted as a panacea for helping skin to look and feel more supple, and youthful.
H
yaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is a clear, gooey substance that is naturally produced by your body. The largest amounts of it are found in your skin, connective tissue and eyes. It has a variety of uses, and many people take it as a supplement or use it in their skin care regimes. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist, and in doing so improve the appearance of skin. When applied to the surface of the skin, hyaluronic acid serums have been found to reduce wrinkles, redness and dermatitis, in addition to making it soft and smoother. Hyaluronic acid has been found to help increase skin moisture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while injections can make skin appear firmer.

apple a day... “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a common English-language proverb that appeared in the 19th century, advocating the consumption of apples for good health. These days the health benefits of apples are well documented, as is their culinary versatility in recipes, as a snack on their own, smeared with nut butter, and even in smoothies.

Resolve Sleep Anxiety & Stress Symptoms
Stunning Lip Colour
FLOWpresso® A SCIENCE BASED SOLUTION
Flow it away Resolve sleep, anxiety and stress symptoms.
F
LOWpresso® combines three distinct therapies into one easy, efficient, and effective restorative treatment, via a comfortable and snug state-of-the-art bodysuit, using revolutionary technology. New Zealand company, Medella Health initially started offering therapy via FLOWpresso®. Using compression massage; often used to stimulate the lymphatic system and increase detoxification, it found this new combination of technologies helped people feel better, sleep well and decreased their stress and anxiety. The impact of this therapy was recently researched, and validated through the University of Waikato. In Dunedin, Dr Elizabeth Harris had heard about the research on FLOWpresso® and started offering sessions in her clinic. In Christchurch, Katrina Menzies was looking for an answer for her teenage daughter, suffering from post-viral fatigue after a bout of glandular fever. Katrina starting taking her daughter to FLOWpresso® sessions, and quickly saw the difference it made. “I could actually see the change in mood and energy after her sessions,” she says. Katrina and Elizabeth are both passionate about offering this technology to the people of Christchurch, hence Reflow Therapy Ltd was born. Based at FLOW Therapeutics, purpose-built premises housing complementary practices in Fitzgerald Avenue, the centre’s restful feel adds to the experience, says Katrina.
A SCIENCE-BASED SOLUTION When the FLOWpresso® development team noticed outcomes after people had left the innovative technology they had created, the FLOWpresso® suit, they realised they were on to something that may considerably aid people. Being science-based, they organised a formal study, using New Zealand first responders. Sleep, stress, and anxiety symptoms were measured before and after three sessions in the suit. The study (to be published soon) was validated through the Waikato University, and showed impressive results. More than 70 percent of the participants experienced improved sleep, and reduced stress and anxiety symptoms. The results were so lifechanging that some of the first response units continue to use the FLOWpresso® when needed. So many people in Christchurch have been affected by stress and developed sleep, stress, and anxiety symptoms, says Dr Harris. “Reflow brings you a beautiful solution, now providing FLOWpresso® sessions to the people of Christchurch. It’s a solution that is both luxuriously soothing and relaxing at the same time,” she adds.

Reintroduce sound to your life
We all know someone who needs to do something about their hearing. It could be a friend, or family member, and the signs can sometimes be obvious — turning the television volume up to higher than usual levels, asking you to speak up, or asking you for repeats.
U
nfortunately most people will delay seeking help for about seven years after a diagnosis of a hearing loss. If a hearing loss is diagnosed, then there is no better time to treat it than now. Technology has come a long way and hearing aids can be adjusted to suit the individual user. It can take time and effort to become acclimatised to hearing some sounds again, but it is worth the effort. Once your brain has adjusted to the amplified sound, you will wonder why you waited so long. So, once you are ready to start the process of improving your hearing, why choose Bellbird Hearing? “We are 100 percent locally owned,” explains audiologist Sam Sloane. “We are experienced and take time to understand your individual hearing needs.” Bellbird’s expert clinicians can select the most suitable type of hearing aids to best meet your needs from the more than 1000 options available. Their clinicians now have the ability to take measurements of sound levels from your hearing aids inside your ear canals to
make sure they are working correctly. “We teach you all the practical tips and tricks required to use your hearing aids in the real world,” says Sam. “We provide care and attention when you need it by offering six years of after sales service with all hearing aids. Regular checkups will ensure you keep hearing happily with Bellbird. “Our clinicians believe in educating our clients,” adds Sam. “If our clients understand their hearing loss and are well informed, they will feel empowered to choose the best possible treatment option to match their hearing goals and objectives. “Comprehensive hearing evaluation goes beyond playing different sounds at different volumes and asking you whether you can hear them.” Bellbird’s hearing testing focuses on gathering information about your hearing history, medical history, injuries, lifestyle, and other factors to produce a broader picture of your overall condition. The information gathered allows them to customise a hearing rehabilitation plan designed to improve hearing and, in turn, quality of life.

Good business F O R
Conferences are big business these days. They are also good for business, bringing together like-minded people to learn, generate new ideas, network and to refresh motivation.
T
he benefits of attending a conference are different for everyone. Visiting a new place is part of the appeal for many attendees (and their partners), and most conferences and seminars include a social aspect. Dinners, sightseeing trips, and parties are fun, and also help with making friends, and networking. Fun aside, they offer an opportunity to gain a fresh perspective, and to learn about the latest trends in the different academic and business arenas. Issues and indepth industry knowledge are presented, discussed and disseminated, with sessions led by the best influencers. Regardless of where a conference is held, guest speakers are usually prestigious national and international speakers. By attending these events, you get to meet these industry influencers and learn from their recommendations first-hand. Another benefit is that often competitors will be at the same conferences, providing an opportunity to find out what they’re up to, and if it has any application in your business. Often programmes include the success stories and the strategies that have led to company growth; and different tips on how to grow. Events usually include time for networking, during which attendees can create new connections with other professionals in the industry, and renew contact with those they already know. This one-on-one contact is a great opportunity to generate leads and new potential customers for your business; as well as turn current customers into brand ambassadors and increase customer loyalty.

Developing ideas Conferences are an essential part of academic life, providing the chance to present, listen to and review important and cutting-edge ideas, theories and scientific finds. If you want to know about the very latest findings in your field, sometimes before they are even published, then a conference is the place to be. Many researchers will present preliminary findings or work which has not yet been published, and these ideas can be great inspiration. Of course, if you are a presenter then getting in front of the crowd is a chance to improve your presentation and communication skills. Soft skills are important for every career, and in academia or research then your skills in presentation and communication are particularly important. Rehearsing will make you more comfortable in front of an audience, and you’ll learn things like the speed at which you should talk and the amount of detail which you need to give in your explanations. Answering questions after your presentation and chatting with other attendees will help hone your communications skills. Spirited debate is an opportunity that should be grasped with both hands. Listening to and participating in lively discussions at conferences can give you new ideas, help refine your existing concepts, and maybe even change your mind about emerging or key issues in a specific field.

Love that gin All you need is love … and gin. So the popular saying goes, and no-one embodies that age-old adage more than Humdinger Gin creators Andrew and Saskia Lewis, pictured above, of Geraldine.
C
elebrating two years, in September, since its inception, Humdinger Gin is proving to be a popular success in the awards game, and with a continually increasing fan base. Last month it expanded further, signing with distriubution company Kahurangi Estate to distribute its gin nationwide. Quality is the key, explains Andrew. That, and its close proximity, just two hours away,
to Christchurch. “We’re ideally situated for a day visit from Christchurch, and fast gaining a reputation as a destination distillery. Our big glass doors allow visitors to experience our gin, and learn about the processes in a very transparent way.” “We have won medals in every competition, and every one of our gins entered has won a medal,” he explains. Those same award-winning gins are
now available as corporate gifts, for use in Christmas gift boxes and for gin aficionados everywhere. Cheers.

These days it might take a little more than a couple of fish and some loaves of bread to fill up a lot of hungry bellies, especially with all sorts of dietary requirements to consider as well. Hiring a professional will take all the stress out of it, and ensure yummy edibles for all. Here are a few options to consider. BY CHARLIE FOX
GRAZING TABLES
BUFFET
Perfect for smaller more intimate events such as a launch event or workshops where a smaller meal or snack will suffice between sessions. This option is more relaxed and opens the floor for mingling.
Big events, whether wedding or corporate, often work well with a buffet option so that there are plenty of options available to suit most dietary requirements. It will need an organised plan of serving though as guests usually go table by table.
FAMILY STYLE
PLATED / PLATE DROP
Similar to a buffet, but the set menu is delivered to the table in bigger portions for everyone to share and self-serve, just like a family dinner. This style catering works well for a more intimate setting such as weddings.
Add a touch of formality to your event with a sit-down meal. Usually the catering choice at weddings, this can be predetermined by guests choosing their protein on the RSVP or the servers alternate the options on the table. This is a great option for formal events where less disruption is needed.

eddings all over the South Island are a speciality, and owner and chef Chantelle Quinn can conjure the feast of your dreams anywhere, often with just two ovens and a barbeque. “We are very versatile and we have said yes to every location so far.” Chantelle works closely with couples to ensure the logistics work and menus are personalised to each wedding. Chantelle remembers a groom who asked for his grandmother’s adored salted caramel and pistachio cheesecake, so she created it in minis for his guests. The food is classic French with Kiwi flavours, rustic, with often a lot of protein. Six different meats could feature throughout the reception, which goes down extremely well with more rural weddings. “I love seeing a wedding guest in an exquisite dress and fascinator tucking into a lamb cutlet and going back for more!” Chantelle’s bespoke menus cater for all dietary requirements. hen it comes to hospitality, entertainment and social activities, the Kaiapoi Club has been an integral part of the Kaiapoi community for more than 130 years. It’s not a club that rests on its laurels of established longevity. “We are always looking for new activities, for new ways to attract different age groups and families to the club,” says manager, Trudi Marshall. Indeed, the variety of activities offered to club members is very wide. Billiards, cards, creative arts, darts, fishing, golf and indoor and outdoor bowls are just some of the many group pastimes available. Of course, the club has bars and restaurants as well – all extremely popular, especially on Housie and Quiz evenings. “We really want the local community to know that our Bistro restaurant is open to the public for meals,” says Trudi. “Diners do not have to be members, so it’s a great venue for family dining, both in the evening and at lunch time. There is an excellent range of both main and light meals to suit both adults and children.” A feature of the Kaiapoi Club is the musical shows it offers. “We have put on Abba and Queen Tribute shows and are working on an Elton John one,” explains Trudi. “These shows have certainly brought in the crowds with people itching to have an enjoyable time post Covid-19,” she adds.

planning is key
When planning a social-style celebration, there are a few essential steps to follow to ensure success.
C
lear communication is important, as is making other people’s responsibilities clear from the start. Whether it’s for an 80th birthday party, a wedding or anniversary, family reunion or a ladies
lunch, some planning is needed, although how much will depend on the type and size of the gathering. The occasion, theme, budget, venue, catering, entertainment, and number of guests must all be taken into consideration.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS FROM METROPOL
1
Decide on the type and size of the event. Planning a wedding may take much more effort than a birthday celebration
2
Determine the theme (if any) and budget.
3
Find the perfect venue. Sometimes it may be as simple as booking a favourite restaurant, other times it may involve having sufficient space, on-site catering, liquor licence etc.
4
Stick to your budget. It dictates what is and isn’t possible throughout the planning process.
5
Work out a schedule and timeline even if it is in informal event, so nothing is missed out.
6
Enlist others to help, especially if there are a lot of moving parts.
7
Make sure everyone knows their specific responsibilities.

heesecake is believed to be of Grecian origins. On its journey through time and around the globe, it has seen a delicious transformation from humble beginnings using just basic ingredients such as cheese, honey and flour. Pastry chefs worldwide have created marvellous flavour combinations that celebrate classic vanilla, combine exotic fruit and jelly, and let’s not forget those decadent chocolate versions. Eat up.

B
ut do you ever find yourself throwing away uneaten fresh produce because it has gone bad before you were able to cook with it? This is a common issue, that not only is wasteful but expensive. Some simple storage hacks can help keep fresh produce good for longer.
HERE ARE A FEW: HERBS Keep the stalks of herbs in water. Much like flowers, herbs will shrivel up quickly if not placed in water. Jars or water glasses are a good option, simply fill with water, place herb stalks in and store on a shelf in your fridge. CELERY Keep celery heads whole, wrap them up tightly in foil, and then store in the fridge.
WYNDHAM GARDEN IS NOW OPEN
MUSHROOMS Store in a dry, breathable package such as a brown paper bag. If in plastic, glass, or Tupperware, moisture gets trapped too quickly. A paper bag allows air circulation, keeping mushrooms good for longer. CARROTS Chop the tops off your carrots before storing in the fridge.
ONIONS Store in a dark, well-ventilated area. Hanging baskets or sacks work well. keep away from potatoes, as this can cause them to sprout. LEAFY GREENS Store leafy greens in a container or bag, with a layer of paper towels. This helps absorb any moisture.

green W I N T E R
Bringing the outdoors inside is easy, even if you’re not known for having a green thumb. There are several hardy plants that thrive indoors, even during the colder winter months.
HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS FROM METROPOL
1
SPIDER PLANT: an old favourite that is almost impossible to kill. They thrive in moderate light and with slightly damp soil, so weekly watering should be sufficient.
2
PHILODENDRON: These grow well in shady areas with indirect light, and don’t need much attention. Grow in an easy draining pot, and water every few weeks when the soil feels dry.
3
ALOES: Practical and pretty, aloes hold water in their thick leaves so can go long stretches between waterings. It prefers to be near a source of light, so try and keep it close to a window or sunny spot.
4
SUCCULENTS: Succulents come in a huge range of colours, shapes and sizes, and can easily be grown together. They love a dry room on the windowsill, and during winter usually only need to be watered monthly.

Original art and hand-crafted items can make all the difference in adding a wow factor and comfort to your home.
T
he “artisan home” is a concept that whole-heartedly embraces this ethos, with soft linens, textured walls and unusual accessories. From wall art to one-of-a-kind furniture, it’s about originality, quality and artistic expression. Investing in quality such as linen bed sheets and napery is a start, along with keeping an eye out for artisan furniture, and amazing art works. Artisanal products can be anything from a comfortable living room sofa to decorative wall art. There’s no one style, varying from modern to mid-western, rustic to bohemian, and casual to chic, depending on personal preference. The common factor is they’re all designed and handmade by artisans. Consider a piece of furniture or a home decor product, for example. Adding a hand-crafted, authentic design element can turn a space in to a work of art. Avoid mass produced. Design should be distinct, unique, and highly personal, made by an individual for an individual.
1 Custom-made and well-crafted woodwork is integral to the artisan style, and can elevate the more mundane into the exceptional.

2
Find unique and extraordinary pieces that showcase your personal style and charm. This may be custom-made furniture, an exquisite coffee table, a large piece of artwork, or a stunning light fixture.
82 August 4, 2022 Metropol
Hand-made, custom and well-crafted pieces will stand the test of time. Don’t just think contemporary. Antiques work just as well as latest trends.
4 Think longevity. Artisan homes are not only for looks and for show. They’re also designed with durability and quality materials that last, balancing superior beautiful finishes in flooring, benches, walls and fittings with interesting and organic accessories.
5 Art you love. Choose paintings, sculpture, and furniture because you love it. Remember you have to feel comfortable living with it.

Squiggle minimalist lounge The Memphis Movement is back and better than ever.
K
nown for its use of bright primary colours, geometric shapes and dynamic patterns, the Memphis style was developed by the founder of the Memphis Group, designer Ettore Sottsass in 1981, Milan. The group of designers and architects blended Pop Art with Art Deco to create a distinct Postmodern style that still has bearing in the design world today. This minimalist lounge is Memphis at its most sophisticated. With walls in varying strengths of Resene Concrete, a frosted silver grey, the space is both elegant and interesting. A minimalist approach utilises bold achromatic interpretations of original Memphis designs. This allows freedom of experimentation in the space, alluding to original designs whilst powerfully contemporising them. By paring down the design to incorporate a monochrome look, it stops the space from becoming overwhelming and allows the eye to move freely between the striking architectural pieces. A highlight of this stylish room is the wall design, in which free flowing lines in Resene Concrete wind there way toward the ceiling from the lower half of the wall. A classic Memphis trend, this design presents the signature curves of the Art Deco era in a decidedly postmodern way. Subtlety is achieved thanks to the very minor differences in tone between the Resene Concrete lines and the Resene Half Concrete wall, adding a sense of movement without detracting from the space. If you’re a lover of colour but not ready to go fullblown Memphis just yet, Resene has a wide range of muted pastels perfect for incorporating into designs such as these. Start with a monochrome palette as your base, think crisp Resene Half Merino and deep Resene Double Foundry, then add in splashes of colour through décor and DIY artwork.

A Word On
Waiting
Have you ever gone past a line of people and wondered what exactly they were waiting for, especially when the conditions for waiting were uncomfortable? It was either unbearably hot or inclement, yet the line continued to grow, confirming the belief that some things are worth waiting for. There’s a psychology to waiting and it’s been studied as part of business management and client services, with some of the most significant findings coming from Harvard Business School professor David Maister. I’m interested in his studies because one of the most common statements I’m hearing in the current market is “we’re waiting” … for the right home, right time, right price, the right circumstances. Everything has to be perfect and yet the chances of perfection, I’ve learnt from experience, are rare and that wait can become an infinite one. Waiting is one of the most dominant of human frustrations, so it makes sense to identify what makes the wait more acceptable. Here are some of his findings: 1) The more valuable the service, the longer you’ll wait. An easy example of this is that people will wait longer for a doctor to attend to them than they would a shop
assistant, perceiving the doctor’s service to be more valuable and deeply integral to their wellbeing. Equally, in real estate clients will wait for the right consultant to manage their property needs in the knowledge that this could give them an advantage by reaching more buyers, having their price expectations upheld through superior negotiation skills and giving their properties a better profile. There’s literally a ‘waiting list’ of clients for consultants of this calibre, and it makes sense to want to work with them. Some factors make waiting feel even longer and this realization gives the service industries – and real estate is one of these – a chance to rectify this inconvenience. 2) Uncertain waits are longer than quantified ones. Someone who knows that their wish list home is coming to the market in approximately one month’s time is more likely to wait knowing this is definitely happening versus never having an actual timeframe communicated to them. The lesson here is consistent communication by an agent to keep in touch with their clients around timeframes – and for those clients wanting to be notified to show loyalty and commitment to that consultant. It’s a two-way street with significant benefits to both parties. Here’s a final ‘waiting’ scenario that

also gets played out regularly and affects most of us: 3) Unfair waits are longer, much longer than equitable ones. Here’s the scenario. You’re waiting to be attended to and the service you receive (or hope to receive) is interrupted by someone’s phone call. The sense of unfairness this engenders can make the wait intolerable and I wonder how much business is lost chasing the call over helping the actual person standing in front of you. I personally struggle with this the most and will usually move on if I find myself in this situation. So, what are you waiting for? What lines are you physically or figuratively standing in? I’m currently waiting for spring; I’m waiting for a full office without the burden of excessive illness. I’m not waiting for the market to change greatly for some time, but I am working with the awareness that it will, as they always do. So you’re aware of the most recent market statistics, I can tell you that 491 properties sold in June, averaging 33 days on the market and for an average price of $700,000. If you’re waiting for that right time, place or home, know that it’s out there and the right person will guide you to it.

Fit and healthy felines Cats may seem lazy with all of the lounging around in the sun they do.
B
ut keeping your cat active and healthy is important, as overweight cats are more likely to suffer from health conditions such as osteoarthritis and diabetes. Here are a few tips to keep your favourite feline fit and healthy.
LASER LIGHTS
KEEPING HYDRATED Similar to humans, cats sometimes feel “hungry” when they are really just bored. This makes it important that they always have fresh water available. Then if they get bored, they can consume water instead of boredom eating.
SWITCH UP THE FOOD
A quick and easy way to get your cat active is with a laser light or pointer. They are a fun tool to keep your cat both physically active and mentally stimulated. Just ensure you are careful to not shine it in your cats eyes and to limit play time to 15 minutes.
CAT TREES/SCRATCHING POSTS
One of the most crucial factors for maintaining a healthy cat is diet, and since cats are carnivores, they need to consume a lot of protein. Buy food that is at least 35 percent protein, with the fats and carbohydrates combined not making up more than 50 percent of your cat’s diet.
Cat trees help to satisfy a cat’s natural urges for climbing and scratching, and are also perfect for keeping your cat strong, fit and healthy. When selecting a cat tree look for one with platforms, hiding holes, and sturdy posts that the cat can scratch.

WINNERS Thirty buildings took home prestigious prizes at the peer-reviewed Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Canterbury Awards, held recently.
F
ive winners also received Resene Colour Awards. Canterbury Jury convenor, Jane Rooney of Architectus, said the judges were spoilt for choice, and were impressed with the creativity and commitment of architects, especially given the challenges presented by Covid-19 during the past two years. “Luckily, we were able to visit the short-listed projects in person, and were able to experience how the spaces felt. This was an important criterion in the judging process, and we often asked ourselves did the project excite us, did it spark joy,” she said. Take a stand
A critical mission
Yes, it is that time again. Nominations have opened for the local body elections and close on 12 August.
Previously with the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, I viewed the key to our country’s future as being “the successful application of technology to leverage our Natural Capital on a platform of product and service integrity”.
W
e already have a couple of high-profile candidates for the Mayoralty, which is great – turnout always increases with such a contest. Were you thinking of putting your hat in the ring too? Or could you see yourself filling one of the 16 seats at the council table? Or is a Community Board role for you? Do you have what it takes? Would you bring innovative thinking to the table? Do you add some perspectives that could be under-represented? Do you care about future generations? Now is your chance to represent Ōtautahi, Christchurch. This year we are losing some of our diversity.
Councillor Jimmy Chen spearheaded the development of the country’s first Multicultural Strategy, while also championing the needs of the wider community and ensuring everyone had a voice. Why is this important? Every piece of international research into corporate boards tells us that diversity matters to the success of the company. A council is not a corporate board, but the same principle applies. Tackling problems with the benefit of different perspectives helps with making better decisions. If that sounds like you and you’re up for a challenge, then stand up and be counted.
I
n this context, Natural Capital is our resource base including our people, and integrity has connotations of environmental impact, sustainability and being able to transparently justify what we are doing. Now, as Independent Chair of Te Papa Hauora the Health Precinct, I can see that sentence equally applies to the pursuit of good health outcomes. Applying technology to support those in health has never been more important. In a health sector that is under enormous, unabating pressure, we have to keep getting smarter when utilising scarce and finite resources, including our people. Continuous improvement through innovation and new technologies is critical to
improving health outcomes. The irony is that a health system under strain understandably tends to retrench, and concentrate on basic needs. That can work against the pursuit of new ways of doing things, potentially stifling innovation. Under pressure people can be simply too busy to think beyond the status quo and immediate needs. The problems of the day dominate. At Te Papa Hauora we are determined to do whatever we can to encourage and support innovation, and the application of new technologies, through collaborative research, education and communication, to lock in a better future for all. That is a critical mission.

Learn from others
Emissions pricing ahead
I recently returned from an amazing trip to Adelaide, Ōtautahi’s Australian sister city, to mark the 50th anniversary of our partnership.
The Climate Change Commission has recommended that a basic farm-level emissions pricing system be introduced as soon as it is possible.
can honestly say that of all my delegation visits, this was the most relevant, inspirational and practical one. Adelaide has abundant parallels to Christchurch and we can learn a lot from working collaboratively with them. Like Christchurch, Adelaide is also a city where everything’s right on your doorstep. It wants to become one of the world’s most liveable cities and has implemented some inspiring strategies to build this. One strong parallel is the innovation eco-system, particularly in the Aerospace sector, an area where Christchurch is growing quickly. Former South Australia Premier Steven Marshall had a vision that Adelaide was going to be famous for aerospace, and his tenacity led to the creation of Lot
Fourteen, an inspirational innovation precinct right in the heart of the city. Lot Fourteen houses small to medium enterprises, big players such as Amazon and the Australian Space Agency. A Capability Centre, designed to ensure there are people to service the growth sectors, is also being built. It’s all very connected and is great inspiration as Christchurch has many similar foundations already. Strategic placemaking has also brought Adelaide to life. Their Riverside Precinct seamlessly links the sport and entertainment facilities with the CBD. With Te Kaha recently approved, I am excited to see how Christchurch can ensure our new stadium is connected to our own city centre, and what we can learn from Adelaide as this work progresses.
T
his would help to lay foundations, which could then be rapidly developed into a more responsive and effective policy. The best approach to pricing agricultural emissions would be a detailed farmlevel pricing system outside the NZ ETS. This system would be best able to recognise and reward the good choices farmers make to reduce their gross emissions in line with the statutory targets. Even though government and the sector won’t be ready for a detailed farmlevel system by 1 January 2025, pricing agricultural emissions must not be delayed. Any set back will make it more difficult for Aotearoa New Zealand to meet its emissions reduction targets and increase the likely cost of meeting our Nationally
Determined Contribution to global efforts to address climate change. Our analysis shows that eligible farmers can be ready to effectively participate in a basic farm-level system by the 1 January 2025 deadline that Parliament has set for pricing agricultural emissions. The time for action is now - we can’t afford to wait for the perfect policy. A lot of hard work has been put in - by farmers, the He Waka Eke Noa partnership, and by the agriculture sector more broadly - to make progress towards meeting the primary sector climate change commitments, and getting ready for emissions pricing, The progress that has been made is enough to keep the sector on track for a basic farm-level pricing system by 1 January 2025.

his is particularly the case with Te Raekura Redcliffs School by Tennent Brown Architects, a winner in the Education category. The school reopened in June 2020, nine years after it was forced to close. “The story of the school community’s long battle to be rebuilt is well known, and I think the architecture has delivered a great result for them. It’s really of its site, history and community,” says Canterbury Jury convenor, Jane Rooney of Architectus. Also back in the community now are Kohinga St Albans Community Centre by Christchurch City Council, and two famous surf lifesaving clubs in the Public Architecture category; South Brighton Surf Life Saving Club Rebuild by Sheppard & Rout Architects, and New Brighton Surf Lifesaving & Bathing Club, by South by Southeast and Snøhetta in association. “It is great to see that the passion and drive of the people involved, has been rewarded with great community facilities that they are rightly proud of,” says Jane. The jury members - Jane Rooney,
Jerome Buckwell of Croson Architects, Jane Peddie of JHA, Tim Dewar of Athfield Architects, and Danny Kamo of Kamo Marsh Landscape Architects - were also highly impressed with the Housing category, where nine awards were presented, including one for South Architects’ multi-award winning Concrete Copper Home. In the Housing, Alterations and Additions category, Beach Barn by C Nott Architects received an award, plus a Resene Colour Award. “This was just a really fun, quirky project. It was obvious that a successful collaboration between architect and client has led to a clever, warm family home,” says Jane. Gustorob by Bull O’Sullivan Architecture was awarded in the Housing - Multi Unit category and received a Resene Colour Award. The house is an extended multi-generational family home, with grandparents at one end and toddlers at the other. Gus is one of the toddlers, and Rob the Grandfather who built the home. shone as the new home for the collection of philanthropists Jim and Dr Susan Wakefield, whose Scarborough Hill home was destroyed in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Instead of rebuilding in situ, they worked with Local Government and iwi and commissioned this House Museum in the city centre, honouring their intention to gift their home and art collection to the people of Ōtautahi Christchurch. Jane describes the end result as “exceptionally well resolved”, adding that it was an awe-inspiring place. • For full results visit the NZIA website.

Built to save energy
xperienced builder Martin Smith from Ultimate Homes became disillusioned with building to the current building code standard, “it’s too low, new homeowners are often hit with huge heating costs to keep warm.” Martin then discovered eHaus – a performance-based building method and jumped at the opportunity to take up the Christchurch licence for the region. The science is built around the Germandeveloped Passive House principles and the computer-based energy modelling software (PHPP). “This sets us apart, and once you see the results it’s hard to ignore,” says Martin. The PHPP modelling is done at the preliminary design stage, accounting for the local climate, site, and orientation. It tells the designer, builder, and client if changes are needed to ensure the house is going to perform. The average energy savings of every eHaus is 86 percent when compared to a similar build. That’s a saving of $258 on an average monthly heat bill of $300. Are you intending to build, and want to feel confident your home is comfortable, healthy, and energy efficient? Contact Martin about building your home the eHaus way, 027 227 4423.
Christchurch has climate extremes – icy cold in winter and long hot summers. Living in a home that remains at a constant healthy temperature range all year round without the big energy bills, is a reality when you build an eHaus.

for new theatre
T
With the main contract about to be awarded, construction will start soon on Christchurch’s new three-storey Court Theatre.
ender documents are currently with the shortlisted contractors, with the theatre to be completed by 2024. Its multipurpose facilities will include a main theatre with 360 seats, a family theatre seating 120 to 150, several flexible studios and a dedicated education, outreach and wellbeing space. It’s to be a sustainable theatre that responsibly addresses its energy consumption and carbon footprint, built to the strictest ecological principles. The theatre will be the cornerstone of central Christchurch’s Performing Arts
Precinct. It features ground-breaking architecture by Athfield architects (NZ) and Haworth Tompkins (London, UK) a new standard in international theatre design. Athfield Architects make architecture that responds with spirit and ingenuity to the pressing challenges of our time: the need for sustainable design and public spaces that reflect the community. Haworth Tompkins is the world’s leading architectural theatre specialist, having designed theatres for The National and Theatre Royal Drury Lane, among others. The architects have made all spaces flexible and functional to suit all kinds of shows.
DID YOU KNOW? The theatre’s original location was in the Canterbury Provincial Council Chambers, opening in 1971. The theatre was occasionally pushed out to the Durham Street Art Gallery when the Māori Land Court needed the chamber. The gallery became an interim home in 1971 and 1972. Over the following years The Court found temporary homes in the Beggs Theatrette and the Orange Hall before settling in the Arts Centre in 1976.

While the home is fitted with in-slab hydraulic heating powered by the heat pump, and a log burner, these units get to take it pretty easy given that the heat is so effectively kept inside the house. as status quo by the New Zealand building code. Our clients never regret choosing an airtight envelope.” Single storied with a floor area of 267 square metres, the home features a 35-degree pitched roof, a modern style timber clad soffit, and eyebrow detailing wrapped around and over the gables. “I’d describe it as modern industrial in style, featuring long-life metal cladding with a stack-bond concrete block entrance. And Macrocarpa is used to great effect to soften the overall look,” says Angus. conventional underpinning
Ground engineering experts Mainmark suggest it’s time to move away from conventional underpinning, and adopt a more innovative approach.
S
teve Piscetek, divisional manager, Mainmark Civil and Mining, says conventional steel and concrete underpinning have long been the go-to solutions to support or strengthen existing structure foundations, but alternative solutions are fast gaining favour. “With a more innovative approach, modern methods of stabilising and lifting structures are streamlining restorative
projects, lowering budget estimates and decreasing site sizes by removing the need for heavy machinery.” Steve says that technology has produced arguably superior alternatives to invasive and costly underpinning. This includes computers that can manage the delivery of cementitious grout mixes that have enough compressive strength to relevel large structures and buildings up to 10 storeys high.
One example is JOG Computer Controlled Grouting (JOG), which allows technicians to send more grout to areas that need additional material. “The outcome is a uniform lift that does not damage the structure, and minimises disruption to the structure and its occupants. With techniques like JOG already available, the future of structural remediation is no longer speculative,” he adds.
