A little kindness

If there was ever a time to show a little kindness, it is now during the festive season.

My dad always told me to put myself in “their” shoes, meaning that when we see or hear others, we do not actually know what is going on in their lives, or why

they sometimes act as they do.

Christmas and New Year are not always fun-filled holidays for everyone, and that’s where a little kindness, or understanding may help.

Just looking at someone is no indication of how they are feeling, or if they are su ering although sometimes there are obvious signals. The festive season is stress-filled for many with extra pressures on family, finances and friends. Be aware of those who may be alone and show a little kindness.

For those celebrating Christmas and New Year in Christchurch, there is plenty to do and some of it is covered in the following pages. Read on.

NEW

YEAR

For many of us, ringing in the New Year means gathering and celebrating.

HIT THE STREETS TO PARTY

Slip into your sparkliest dress, sprinkle yourself with glitter, and hit the town. On Oxford Terrace and down St Asaph Street, a variety of venues will be putting on NYE bashes, so you can sing and dance your way into 2023. You can seek out a rooftop bar to watch Christchurch City embrace the New Year or head into a buzzing venue to chant the iconic countdown with 500 of your closest friends.

WATCH THE FIREWORKS

For spectacular fireworks and a family-friendly event, during the early hours of the evening, head to North Hagley Park for the annual NYE party. This event will have interactive fun for the whole family, including food trucks selling delicious treats, music icons performing throughout the night, and, of course, a midnight fireworks display.

HOST AT YOURS

If you are planning to host a New Year party, collect sparklers, a nice bottle of Champagne, and Polaroid cameras to up the ante. Maybe even opt for a costume theme. Black and white or gold and silver are fabulous combinations, or for something really fun, as 2023 will be the year of the water rabbit, get your guests to dress up as bunnies. It’s a fun way to see in 2023.

celebrating CHRISTMAS

PhilMauger CHRISTCHURCHMAYOR

“Christmas is a special time of year that I really look forward to because it’s usually the only time when I get to relax with all the family around, and I just love that.

Chrissy and I like to keep things simple, so this year we’ll be up at the family bach with all the kids and grandkids. I’ve being going to the bach for 62 years.

There are 16 of us so there’s a bit of planning that goes in before we head away as you can imagine. We always open presents round the tree in the morning. There’s no sleep-ins for us because the grandkids are up at the crack of dawn.

Then I’ll be in an apron cooking up a storm on the ‘barbie’ and we’ll have our Christmas lunch at a big table set up outside on the deck. We’ll be hoping for a nice, Kiwi summer’s day so after lunch we can head out and play some beach cricket and run around a bit, and then have a swim or two to cool o .

It’s been a busy year for me with the mayoral campaign, and I’m looking forward to spending time with my family, recharging the batteries and coming back refreshed and ready to serve the people of Christchurch, which I’m so proud to do.

Happy Christmas to each and every one.”

“Iknow it’s cliché, but I LOVE Christmas. I always have, but since becoming a mother it’s added an extra level of anticipation as the Christmas magic comes alive through my three kids. You can’t help but smile as the excitement builds in their world – Santa, cheeky elves, advent calendars, Christmas Eve service, nativity dress ups, Christmas parties – you get my gist.

The thing I find can get lost in their Christmas fairy tale is the true magic of the season – selfless giving. It’s so easy to get caught up in the commercialised story (and general busyness) and forget to prioritise the joy that comes with simply serving and giving to others.

It’s scientifically proven that the joy of giving lasts longer than the joy of receiving, but convincing my children of that is a slow [ongoing] process.

I need them to know that their Christmas experience is a privilege not everyone has, so we have some traditions in our household - including a kindness advent calendar (each day they donate a pantry item to our local foodbank), buying gifts for less privileged children their own age, and delivering Christmas care packages to the hospital.

It doesn’t feel like much, but I’m trying to enhance my children’s Christmas experience, in the hope that it will bring about an even truer Christmas magic.”

Christmas means different things to different people, yet many who celebrate it share the same feelings about why and how. Here’s what some of the Cantabrians Metropol has featured this year have to say:

Christmas messages

“A

common plaintive cry at this time of year is “Where did those 12 months go?”

Is it me getting older, or is this complex, complicated and challenging world of ours spinning faster and even out of control?

If possible Christmas should be a time to ‘opt out’ or ‘hop o ’ and really chill, take stock of the year that has been, and plan for 2023 to be better and more fulfilling.

Christmas is an opportune time to strengthen and rebuild family ties. Strong and stable families are the basis of healthy communities.

It is certainly a time for giving,

but priority should be given to giving love and time to all those who are, or should be, close to us, and small yet pertinent gifts that reflect that love, but like all matters re Christmas, in moderation.

More importantly this is a time to recognise that not everyone is as fortunate as you, so it is a great opportunity to share some of that good fortune with the various members of our community who would otherwise face a bleak Christmas season and beyond.

I am o to the lake to escape commerce and screens, so I will see you in 2023.”

“The biggest thing for me at Christmas is quality family time, catching up with all my whanau. Then it is all about the Rs – resting, relaxing, recharging, and realigning. Reading is one of my Rs. This is the only time when I can escape into a good book, and maybe even finish it.

I especially enjoy being out in the sunshine and warmth with family, and being able to give to others, whether it is my time or something else. I love the whole giving process, especially making time to help others. Time is such a beautiful thing to give.

Seeing what my mates get up to at Christmas and New Year is a pleasure and can inspire me and

“F

or any fellow retailers reading this, you will totally relate that Christmas can feel like one big finish line.

This year I am not hosting Christmas at my house, and I am so, so happy about it.

I just get to eat it, drink it in and enjoy - with close family around me. I am so looking forward to sitting back, taking stock and relaxing - like so many of you after such a full-on few years.

For many, Christmas Day can be quite a lonely time and I always think about that on 25th.

People who have recently lost loved ones or may be estranged from their own families, for

help me to inspire others.

On another front, I enjoy all the sparkle of Christmas, such as getting the tree, putting on decorations, and wrapping all those presents.

With Christmas comes family traditions and fond memories of times gone by, happy times such as making ham sandwiches, and drinking Baileys Irish Cream with my late father, who was Irish. It’s about keeping those traditions alive, appreciating the highlights and helping people to overcome any lowlights.

We’ve been stuck in New Zealand the last years, so this year I’ll be in Noosa, enjoying an Aussie Christmas with prawns on the barbie, Champagne and family.”

whatever reason.

I think it’s a good opportunity to reach out to those people so they don’t feel so alone on what is such a family-focused day.

I always find that on Christmas Day you find yourself reflecting about the past year, and thinking about what you would like to do di erently next year.

For me, it’s going to be spending more time with the people I love, injecting fun moments into my every day, and having a laugh with colleagues.

I’m also hoping for a team movie night, planning a date night, making time for friends, and stopping to smell the roses a little more. We will see.”

Lea Stening has motivated some of New Zealand’s top cricketers, rowers, Para Olympians and many more. Georgia Summerton caught up with her, ahead of her latest book launch.
SPORTS

Dietician, columnist, author and motivator, Lea Stening is a household name in many sporting homes, having worked with dozens of adults and children. Her latest literary o ering focuses on children, and her own concerns about the lack of nutritional education in schools and sports.

As a result of this, she believes that too many children are dropping out of sport and no longer having fun, many with injuries and health problems.

“Working with growing children and their families, I see many getting tired, their food intake out of sync with their needs for growth, development and activity,” she explains.

“There is a real need for parents, coaches and teachers to work together, to have a better understanding of children’s daily nutrition needs and how to vary food intake to match their goals for training and performance.

Lea hopes to fill some of those gaps with How to Grow an Athlete. If nothing else, she hopes they will learn how to fill the nutrient and energy gap when growing children exercise, and learn how nutrients protect the brain, improve mental health, cognition, sleep and self-regulation.

“Kids loving sport helps them to enjoy life,” she says. “By nourishing them well on that journey we all contribute to enabling them to live their best lives long into adulthood.”

She is passionate about health promotion as a result of seeing the way people’s lives are transformed

when they stop dieting and learn about the power of food to fuel, adapt and repair their bodies.

Her advice: “Appreciate your body more. It’s deserving of your love and respect. It’s very easy to put on weight even eating ‘healthy food’. Find out what you need. See a dietitian for a nutritional assessment, your GP to get blood tests done and find out what you may be missing in nutrients and understanding.”

Children need to eat similar food to their parents, but the serving sizes and consistency will vary with their age and development, says Lea. “Physiological di erences between adults and children a ect their nutritional needs, hydration and performance.

“Our bodies are constantly regenerating cells, and it is never too late to make healthier decisions to build healthier lives. Nutrition education can give you the knowledge and freedom to enjoy a wider range of foods and improve your personal power, mental and physical performance.”

“By nourishing them well on that journey we all contribute to enabling them to live their best lives long into adulthood.”

Lea Stening was born in Auckland, grew up in a state house in Palmerston North with her supportive solo mother and older brother. Her mother taught her to work hard and never give up.

She completed a Dip Home Science Otago, married and moved to Christchurch in 1975 for Dietetic training (PG Dip Diet) then worked for four years in Melbourne and London, specialising in paediatrics.

TWO DECADE ART SPONSORSHIP CELEBRATED WITH SCAPE 2022

Sweat Equity is the theme of this year’s SCAPE Public Art Season.

Guaranteed to be the highlight of Ōtautahi Christchurch’s cultural calendar, eight local and international artists will showcase their unique interpretation of this year’s theme, Sweat Equity. Available for all to experience until 29 January, Sweat Equity is the third in a three-part opus titled Fictions – the mastermind behind which is SCAPE’s Managing Curator, Jamie Hanton.

Artist Hye Rim Lee’s 3D dreamscape animation, White Rose, is where you can find TOKI, a character beautifully isolated in a fantasy world, twirling and floating through various textured spaces representing purity, love, death, and a new beginning. Lee is a true mulitimedia artist, whose work spans across digital, sculptural, and performance dimensions.

Proudly backed by law firm Anderson Lloyd, White Rose is a digital piece of artwork that can be viewed at di erent vantage points around the city. Catch TOKI twirling on screens on the hour every hour at the Christchurch Casino foyer entrance, or immobilised on billboards throughout the city.

Richard Greenway, Anderson Lloyd’s CEO, says the firm is proud to yet again be a SCAPE Silver Sponsor. “Continuing an over 20 year partnership, we want to show support for the Christchurch arts community and access to art for everyone

to enjoy. Partnerships like this are an important way businesses like Anderson Lloyd have been able to contribute to the city’s post-quake recovery and renewal.” Anderson Lloyd has played a practical role in securing many permanent pieces of public art that form part of SCAPE’s legacy collection, with the firm’s resource management team providing pro bono legal services including resource consent support for many of the SCAPE works. These works include Regan Gentry’s towering wheat sculpture - Flour Power, and the well known Antony Gormley piece, STAY, which cuts a striking industrial humanoid form in the Avon River.

Greenway explains that “it’s a privilege for Anderson Lloyd to be able to use our skills and abilities to support our community and the placement of public art that brings delight to those who live in and visit the garden city.”

The SCAPE Public Art season is not to be missed and runs until 29 January 2023. Visitors and residents can explore the eight new installations and the 14 legacy artworks that have a permanent home in the central city. The entire SCAPE Public Art Season presents plenty of opportunities to connect and interact with the artworks, artists, and the central city.

Whether you are bound to the city for work, find it too hard to travel with children, or have family coming to visit you, here are some of the top things to do in the Garden City this summer.

WINE & DINE

Have an outdoor get-together at one of Christchurch’s parks that boast free barbecues. No need to stress about having a small garden to be able to host a fantastic Kiwi barbecue for extended family and all your friends.

Roll out a picnic blanket, grab your favourite foods from a supermarket, and have a lovely date at the botanical gardens.

For a view of Lyttleton Harbour, pick a lunch spot that overlooks the boats and also the ocean.

ARTS & CULTURE

Many music events will be taking place at Hagley Park, Hidden Lakes, NYE party, and Electric Ave to name a few. Keep these bars on your Facebook events radar for local live music bands; 12 Bar, Fat Eddies, Darkroom, Space Academy, and O.G.B to name a few.

Make a point to tour Christchurch’s vibrant street art scene. Weave your way through the inner city to admire the large-scale masterpieces. Take it a step further and look up each artist, to keep an eye on what they are doing in Christchurch in the future.

Dust yourself off Christchurch, it’s time to dig up fossils and forgotten putting skills for the city’s latest attraction. Cantabrians no longer need to travel for top-quality amusement.

Now, Christchurch’s very own theme park has come to life, and so have the dinosaurs.

Pondering a theme, Aaron and his business partner Peter Gatonyi decided on dinos, filling Jurassic Adventure with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs of the exact scale and colour to the prehistorics.

The only entirely wheelchair accessible mini golf course in New Zealand, challenge yourself to 18-holes amongst the dinosaurs, or brave New Zealand’s only ride-on T-Rex. While the marketing of any real estate can be difficult to predict, the time for marketing a business has never looked better than now.

For those looking to sell their business, the number of potential buyers out there is on the increase, while for those who have long harboured an ambition to own their own dream business, the opportunities are plenty.

“We have a full range of businesses on the market, from accommodation to retail, and everything in between,” says Athol McCully, Business Broking Sales Manager, NAI Harcourts Grenadier Commercial.

“Alongside the interest from locals, we also have a lot of inquiries from out-oftowners looking for businesses in and around Canterbury.”

Athol emphasises that having the biggest broker team of any Harcourts franchise in New Zealand brings added benefits to the marketing process.

“The diversity of our business broker team ensures a good working rapport with overseas clients.”

Athol also stresses that the guidelines for

marketing a business, so far as the physical and financial aspects, are the same as for marketing a residence.

“Aesthetically, the business should look as presentable as possible, and financially – all financial information should be up-to-date.

“We need the ability to access that information quite quickly.”

The company’s editor-inchief Louise Waterson says that for the majority of businesses, Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns impacted heavily on daily operations, yet the Quality Service Award winners for 2023 rallied, building success by placing their customers’ needs at the centre of all business responses.

She says that while the pandemic may have shifted the standard markers of business achievements, customer service and corporate social responsibility has remained core among those success markers.

“This year has witnessed a greater focus and determination among customer service teams to ensure their customers’ needs, no matter how complex, are resolved quickly and with troublefree solutions. For the awardwinning businesses this means successfully delivering assistance in an innovative and savvy manner, while at the same time remaining approachable simply

by upholding levels of kindness and understanding as central to assisting individual customers properly.”

Animal prints have stood the test of time, often associated with an exotic, sexy look.

Options include leopard, zebra print, cheetah and tiger prints, alongside snakeskin. Less is usually best, opting for one fabulous print item, and then styling it with classic add-ons, and metallic accessories. At one time considered evening wear, animal prints have made the transition to daywear also, showing up in o ces, at restaurants and all manner of functions.

The key to looking good is balance. Don’t overdo it. Coordinate casual neutrals to tone down the fierceness of jungle prints.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS:.

1. BLOUSES

Wear with black (or blue) jeans, black dress pants and strappy heels.

2.

COATS AND JACKETS

A statement coat or jacket looks amazing

with all black underneath. Coordinate black top and pants, a jumpsuit, dress, or skirt and blouse with your favourite jacket in summer and coat in winter.

3. DRESSES

Current sneaker trends work amazingly well with prints and dresses. Try a wrap dress with flats, or white sneakers.

For a more sophisticated look, pair a ru ed or layered dress with strappy sandals.

according to new research from the University of South Australia.

Examining how almonds can a ect appetite, researchers found that a snack of 30-50 grams of the nut could help people cut back on the number of kilojoules they consume each day.

Published in the European Journal of Nutrition, the study found that people who consumed almonds – as opposed to an energy-equivalent carbohydrate snack –lowered their energy intake by 300 kilojoules (most of which came from junk food) at the subsequent meal.

Dr Sharayah Carter, from UniSA, says the research provides valuable insights for weight management.

“Rates of overweight and obesity are a major public health concern, and modulating appetite through better hormonal response may be key to

promoting weight management,” Dr Carter says.

“Our research examined the hormones that regulate appetite, and how nuts –specifically almonds - might contribute to appetite control.”

The study found that people who ate almonds had 47 percent lower C-peptide responses.

These could improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

It also found that pancreatic polypeptide responses were 44 percent higher, indicating slowed digestion which would in turn may reduce food intake, both encouraging weight loss.

FAST FACT: Almonds contain vitamins, minerals, protein, and also fibre, suggesting a number of health benefits.

The bugs in our tummies are being put under the microscope to see how they influence bowel cancer. This is one of eight research projects underway thanks to $824,037 of Major Projects Grants recently announced by the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation.

Director Melissa Haberfield says investing in world-class research is critical, and the Foundation is proud to be supporting emerging talent as well as experienced researchers.

“It is a privilege to be able to financially support some of the brightest talents in our region. The research this funding enables will result in better health and wellbeing outcomes for the people of Canterbury and the world,” says Melissa.

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, with approximately 3000 people diagnosed every year and 1200 deaths.

Canterbury has almost twice the national average with 113 cancers found per 100,000 people compared to a national average of 65.7.

Postdoctoral fellow Dr Annika Seddon, a biochemist/cell biologist who has received a $110,000 grant from the Foundation to study bowel cancer, says New Zealand’s bowel cancer statistics are a major health concern.

“The funding from the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation will enable us to better understand this disease in a New Zealand context, which will have a major impact on prevention and treatment.”

Annika says there is mounting evidence to suggest gut bacteria and inflammation play a role in bowel cancer.

Her research will investigate if compounds produced by gut bacteria enhance production of oxidants in immune cells and how these oxidants change chemical signatures on the DNA of bowel cancer cells that a ect their function.

“We hope this research will lead to new strategies for preventing or slowing the progression of this devastating disease. The ultimate goal is to save lives,” says Annika.

ONGOING FUNDING

The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation is the largest independent notfor-profit funder of medical research in the South Island, o ering Canterbury-based researchers more than $1 million annually.

“Over the last 62 years, the Foundation has funded more than $32 million of health research. This incredible investment in the health and wellbeing of our community is made possible thanks to our loyal supporters, donors and members whose gifts enable world-class research to take place, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations,”

says director Melissa Haberfield. L-R: Geo Cranko CMRF Board Chair, Christoph Goebl, Ruqayya Sulaiman-Hill, Ruth Benson, Martina Paumann-Page, Annika Seddon, Michael Currie, Michael Maze, Melissa Haberfield CMRF Foundation Director (absent Kaaren Mathias)

Whether we blame that extra helping of barbecued beef, the siren song of the trifle bowl, the fizz of overexcited young ones, or another type of fizz, a cup of tea and a lie-down are often on the agenda.

There is another overlooked reason for why the day catches up with us. If our hearing is not what it used to be, the e ort of the auditory focus is exhausting. It is one thing having a quiet co ee with a friend around the kitchen table, but it is a di erent ball game with a room full of chattering family and friends, new toys squeaking or beeping, and Mariah Carey giving it her all through the speakers. Oh, the cacophony!

Listening hard and trying to fill in the gaps of what is being said for several hours is an ordeal, but it needn’t be.

Sam Sloane of Bellbird Hearing, recommends you take action as soon as possible.

“We find that people take seven to 10 years to address their hearing issues,” he

says. “People often state that they ‘can deal with it’ and ‘I hear what I want to hear’, but clients are thrilled once they are fitted with a hearing aid.

“Instead of dreading the prospect of socialising, our clients rediscover how much they like to be out and about.”

BBQ WHOLE

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 4) 2 whole fish, approx. 800gm each 2 lemons 4 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped 1 medium red onion, diced 4 tbsp capers, drained

METHOD

2 tbsp olive oil

Flaked sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper 2 large handfuls of mixed fresh herbs - parsley, dill, tarragon, basil

Tin foil for wrapping each fish in

Scale and gut each fish carefully. Wash the fish inside and out, then gently dry with a paper towel. Finely grate half of the zest from the lemons, then slice both thinly. 1

Place the grated zest in a food processor with the garlic, onion, capers, herbs, olive oil and seasoning, and process until finely chopped.

Score some shallow cuts into the outside of each fish then rub the sea salt and pepper all over the outside of the fish so that some goes into the scored cuts. Pack the mixture into each fish along with a few lemon slices around it to hold the stu ng in. Grease the tin foil with some olive oil then wrap each fish tightly in the tin foil and leave for an hour before cooking if possible.

Cook the fish on a hot barbecue for 15 minutes on each side but don’t unwrap to check how well it has cooked until after both sides have been done.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. What will you serve for Christmas dinner? For many readers that may depend on where you are, what your budget is, and your favourite celebration foods.

F

estive food is described (Collins dictionary) as ‘special, colourful, or exciting,’ especially because of a holiday and celebration.

Christmas without pavlova, strawberries and whipped cream, while in Australia prawns on the barbecue are almost mandatory. Americans love their turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, and sweet potato pie, in contrast to Kiwis who enjoy new season’s potatoes and cold salads.

Traditional western Christmas food includes ham, turkey with cranberry sauce, trifle, and plum pudding with brandy sauce, although many countries have developed their own options especially in warmer climes. In New Zealand, for example, it wouldn’t beWhatever your taste, why not try something di erent this Christmas and start a new family tradition?

Pour the first measure of hot water into a heatproof container, add gelatine powder and stir until dissolved. Add elderflower cordial and boiling water, and stir to combine.

Dining out this summer doesn’t come any easier than making a booking at The Athens Yacht Club in central Christchurch. Its name hints at its Greek origins, and its mouth-watering seasonal food leaves patrons in no doubt of them. In Greek culture, food is not only about sustenance – it’s about culture, comfort, family and life itself.

Cantabrians have no need to travel to Greece to experience the flavours of the Mediterranean. The Athens Yacht Club brings you the total Greek experience with authenticity being a top priority. In Victoria Street in the central city, it is the epitome of a Greek family restaurant, with owners Emilios and Rebecca Kotzikas taking their inspiration from his Greek Cypriot heritage.

Family get-togethers, group functions, and couples dining are all catered for. “We strive to bring you the total Greek experience with a ordable quality, authenticity, and hospitality being our top priority,” says Emilios.

Both he and Rebecca believe that dining out should be a memorable experience, every time,

and hospitality helps dictate that.

“People forget what hospitality means. We look after them, greet them with a genuine smile, and make sure they have a great experience,” says Emilios.

The club’s success is a tribute to its sta , he adds. “All of our sta genuinely care; they are the heart and soul of the restaurant, plus this year we have a new restaurant manager Rose, and a new bar manager Marko. Both are helping us create ‘The Athens Experience’.”

Emilios is a keen wine bu and happily lists some of New Zealand’s most sought-after labels on their bespoke wine list. There is an emphasis on New Zealand made wines, and an extensive list of Champagnes. If you’re not into wine, the drinks list includes specialty cocktails, mocktails, craft beers and craft ciders.

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR CLOSURE

The last day for dining at The Athens Yacht Club this year is 22 December. It will re-open on 11 January 2023. 179 Victoria Street | Call 03 365 0435.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Make your festive season a merry one, sharing drinks with friends and family. There’s still time to stock up on essentials for eggnog and Christmas punch, sherry for the trifle, brandy for ther pudding sauce (and the cook), and to even sort a few spirited Christmas gifts.

Eggnog is a classic holiday drink. Typically made from milk, egg yolks, rum (or whisky), and spices. It dates back to medieval Britain, and is usually drunk hot. It became popular among monks and the wealthy around 1700.

Don’t forget to stock up for New Year’s Eve festivities while you are at it. Champagne is an obvious choice and there’s a plentiful selection, alongside whiskies, brandies, a multitude of gins, and any other spirit that tickles your palate.

You will find plenty to celebrate with this festive season at Big Daddy’s Liquor. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all.

Bathrooms are a unique space. They’re one of those places that don’t need to match or coordinate with the other rooms in your house –which makes them ripe for having some real fun with decorating.

One way to go about coming up with your look is to create a theme. Nature is a great place to seek inspiration if you’re looking for an idea that will appear to everyone who may be using your bathroom, regardless of their age or gender. Plus, tropical plants have been a massive trend over recent years – with potentially no variety more popular than the highly-recognisable monstera, so you likely won’t struggle with finding décor to coordinate with your design if you look to this motif.

Rather than sticking to typical earthy greens for the basis of your bathroom colour palette, put a playful twist on it with refreshing blues, cloudy greys and

pretty pinks. The walls of this bathroom are in Resene Longitude, a chalky and soft pastel grey blue that’s particularly easy on the eyes and lends itself well to being paired up with a range of other colours.

Floorboards in paler Resene Midwinter Mist add even more neutrality to the base of the room, leaving room to have more fun with statement accent colours.

Since small bathrooms are often short on counter space, this bathroom has a painted peg stool in Resene Streetwise that can be moved about the room to wherever and whenever it’s needed.

If you are looking for a statement pendant, try a single bulb chandelier. The latter traditionally has more than one bulb incorporated into a single fixture, while a pendant light is always one bulb, however contemporary design often merges the two, hence a pendant chandelier. Statement lighting is an excellent way to display your personality and style, so give it a go.

Love Light Soy Candles fragrances, such as Ginger Cookie, Noel and Fresh Pine, bring an unforgettable Christmas scent into your home.

Candles in crystal bowls and glasses cast a magical Yuletide ambience, as do exquisite Christmas containers.

For those special people, create a personalised candlegift of glassware and fragrances or choose a beautiful pre-wrapped gift. Wedding candles become cherished keepsakes, while room and car di users make life heavenly.

“Bring in your empty candle containers for refilling and enjoy browsing our cute and gorgeous studio,” owner and candle-maker Tania Mitchell says. Visit Love Light Soy Candles at 185 Brookside Road, Rolleston.

The best time to install lighting is when building new, renovating or landscaping, but if that ship has sailed already then here are several options for addon or add-ins. A few string lights might work temporarily, yet not last longer than Christmas celebration.

Buying quality, weather-proof lights will make a di erence. Most experts agree that the best type of lighting, outdoors and in, is LED which use less energy than incandescent and halogen bulbs. This means they can be left on for long periods

without adding major costs to your power bill. They also have a longer life than other types so don’t need to be replaced as often.

To create ambience in your outdoor spaces, you will need three basic types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent.

• Ambient lighting can be achieved through hanging lights, post lights, and wall lights.

• Task lighting includes pathway lights, plus deck and security lights.

• Accent outdoor lighting comes via landscape kits and spotlights. Try a landscape lighting kit that plugs

directly into any outdoor outlet. Such kits usually comprise several ground spot lights strung together on a single cord that can be arranged around a garden or the perimeter of a patio to create a festive mood.

Solar lighting works well too, placed in the ground, gardens and even strategically around patios.

The buxus really is a “garden hero” and a must for the formal garden because its compact growing habit makes it easy to shape and maintain.

Brent and Edwina Bailey are devotees of buxus plants. They began growing them in 1990 at their home in Ashburton. Inspired by an article in Gardens Illustrated in 1995, they decided to establish a nursery for buxus topiaries. At first they transplanted the topiaries they already had on to an acre of land at Mt Somers and developed that for several years.

Subsequently, when moving to Christchurch, they brought the precious plants with them and established their topiary nursery – St George Boxwood

Nursery – in Prebbleton.

Those topiaries are now between 20 -30 years old, with some exceeding three metres in height, extremely rare for buxus in New Zealand.

The nursery now specialises in potted topiary and has some quite stunning architecturallyshaped ornamental specimens available. Visit the website below to view the range and select the ideal feature for your garden. You will be in excellent company as plants from the nursery have gone to several award winning homes and gardens around the country including a collection of 40 to a New Zealand Garden of International Significance.

Topiaries from the St George Nursery have also featured at a number of garden shows around the South Island.

A pool in the backyard is a perennial Kiwi dream. Having that relaxed resort feeling without leaving home, a ready source of fitness, and hot bothered children all cooled down and ready for bed on a nor’wester night.

With friends and family gatherings on the rise during summer, food is often unthinkingly left within easy reach of cats and dogs, and not always to their benefit.

Now is an ideal time to brush up on what foods it is imperative to keep out of the reach of beloved pets.

Aside from the hygiene factor, many everyday foods palatable to humans will cause major health problems, and even kill, some pets.

The list is long, especially for dogs which often hoover up any food they find. You can find some of the toxic foods listed on pets.webmd.com, but some timely advice to visitors may also help.

Give yours pets their own special food to keep them occupied, and request that guests do not feed the animals. Here are some of the food especially toxic to many pets:

THE SWEETENER XYLITOL found in candy, gum toothpaste, baked goods and many diet foods.

AVOCADOS (FRUIT & TREES) which contain percin, a substance that causes vomiting and diarrhoea in some species of animals.

ALCOHOL is a no-go for animals so if a drink is spilt make sure to not let them lap it up.

ONIONS & GARLIC are known to kill red blood cells, causing anaemia in some animals.

CHOCOLATE is an absolute ‘no’ for animals so don’t leave it lying around and beware of low-hanging Christmas tree chocolate ornaments.

GRAPES in any colour or stage may cause kidney failure in cats, dogs and other animals too. Keep those party platters out of reach, and remember the same goes for dried grapes such as raisins and sultanas.

over-exercising dogs

The health issues that come along with under-exercising your dog are well-known, the detrimental outcomes of over-exercising are less known.

It’s important to know the signs of over-exercising, the ways you are exercising your dog, and what the weather conditions are to make sure you keep your pet happy and comfortable all summer long.

SIGNS

Dogs are not able to tell us when they are in pain or uncomfortable, yet there are a few signs we can look out for to tell if we are overexercising them.

Signs include if they are resistant to exercise, appear anxious, pant continuously, have visible joint pain, and wear and tear on paw pads.

EXERCISE TOOLS

A current hot topic for debate is the popular ball flinger, a plastic tool that launches a tennis ball far into the distance for your dog run after and fetch.

Some vets are voicing their concerns about the e ects of continual running on dogs’ joints, muscles, and cartilage, saying it can lead to long-term issues such as arthritis.

A ball flinger may be the current choice for dog owners, but trends come and go. Frisbees or sticks will keep your dog just as happy and fit

Whatever you do use to exercise your dog, remember moderation.

HEAT

Keep in mind, too, that as the temperatures rise, dogs can become overheated or fatigued. When it’s hot, walking on sand or pavement can burn your dog’s paw pads. Bypass these issues in summer by avoiding the hottest mid-periods of the day and instead opt for morning or evening strolls and play.

While all these tips are important, the number one thing to remember is to be truly kind. When out with your dog consider if you would get tired running for that long, or is it too hot for you to exercise?

Imagine yourself in a coat, how would you feel?

Just like we take our supplements, Newflands is the precisionharvested, sustainable pet supplement brand giving our furry friends a better life.

Newflands was “born out of the passion and love” for her dogs, but qualified vet nurse and owner Fiona Robertson’s mission wasn’t just to improve

the quality of life for her pets.

“I really wanted sustainability at the forefront. If I was doing this I was going to do it properly.”

So, Newflands became New Zealand’s first sustainably, ethically and locally produced pet supplement brand and the first hoki oil supplements on the New Zealand market.

Newflands supplements increase the life of cells and tear

production, support the immune system and reduce symptoms of arthritis for your pet, all while protecting the environment.

Hoki oil provides the extra omegas our pets need that are not found in normal food. Shop online or call Fiona direct at 027 288 5358 for your nearest stockist.

Chairman of the TIDA judging panel, Paul Taylor says this year saw an easing of supply and construction di culties, resulting in large numbers of entries.

“One of the key aspects of good design is how it takes the challenges that each project presents and works through solutions that seemingly turn a negative into a positive,” he says.

“On one level, this may mean working within a restrictive budget. Or the site itself may have challenging aspects

– such as a steep slope or awkward orientation or di cult dimensions.

“Or there’s pressure to develop a home that fulfills the owners’ space requirements in a cohesive way that complements the home’s architecture – whether the project is a new build or a renovation.

“Our TIDA Homes entries come from architects and designers who have had to address some, or all, of these factors, resulting in a collection of very impressive homes from all around the country,” he adds.

The Trends International Design Awards were announced recently, showcasing some of the best builds in New Zealand.

The council is committing $46 million towards the development of the Performing Arts Precinct, which includes the construction of The Court Theatre, the public realm and also landscaping.

The Court is fundraising $10 million towards the move to its new home, with $7 million a direct contribution to the construction. The Crown has provided the land and $3 million under the terms of the global settlement agreement with the council.

Additional funding was allocated by council to the project, after tender prices for construction came in significantly higher than the original budget, due to world-wide construction cost

escalations. With $6 million already spent on development and early works, the total cost of the project is now looking to be $56 million.

The Court Theatre’s new home will be located on the corner of Colombo and Gloucester streets, opposite Tūranga. Theatre chief executive Barbara George says the new three-storey building will include a 375-seat playhouse theatre, a 130-seat theatre, an education studio and a number of multipurpose spaces.

“All the aspects of a working theatre, such as set building, costume making and rehearsals, will be based on site – it’s always fascinating to look behind-the-scenes at the entire Court Theatre industry,” she adds.

Future of work

ChristchurchNZ’s latest Ōtautahi Economic Insights Breakfast focused on the Future of Work. With the word ‘future’ involved, it is no surprise that rangatahi were a major part of the conversation.

Rangatahi are our future employees and employers, ensuring that they are supported and equipped with the skills they need to fully engage with our workforce is fundamental to our region’s future success.

The future therefore, is now. A digitally-driven future means businesses need to adapt to new ways of thinking and doing and minority and diverse rangatahi should be involved in the design of the workplace culture. We must develop new mind-sets to drive future job satisfaction by ensuring roles hold value, inclusiveness and are purpose-led. Rangatahi are well aware of the world they are inheriting and will not be content to sit in their

9 to 5s – they want their mahi to be meaningful and they want their passions and values to align with it.

Growth mind-sets should be part of our everyday. Leaning on rangatahi to help shape the future is not confined to the workplace.  Being openminded to the ideas of our future innovators, leaders, teachers and change makers, and considering things through novel eyes is kind of like a partnership with the next generation - beneficial teamwork to help form a positive future for all.

I look forward to next year and continuing to work to make it a bright one for Ōtautahi. Meri Kirihimete and wishing you a wonderful break with your friends, whānau and loved ones.

Reflecting on 2022

As we head towards the end of the year – our first as an operational venue – I’ve been reflecting on the past 12 months.

It’s been a hell of a ride, starting the year in virtual lockdown to all go when we reopened in May; but despite the challenges of opening a convention centre during a pandemic, our team has risen to the challenge, and I couldn’t be more proud.

The stats are remarkable. Over the past seven months we’ve hosted 62 conferences, 47 banquets, five exhibitions, a live event, and 40-odd other meetings.  We’ve had incredible support from our local community, and we’ve welcomed around 60,000 guests from throughout New Zealand and overseas who have contributed to our city’s economy.

While it has certainly been busier than anticipated, to see the di erence Te Pae Christchurch is making to local businesses, to

our suppliers, and to our industry makes it all worth it.

This Christmas, our team will be enjoying a wellearned break, spending time with loved ones, before gearing up for another busy year.

While our events will be taking a short break, there’s plenty of fantastic happenings taking place around the city in January, from Bread & Circus to sports games, music festivals and food and wine gatherings. There’s also a host of great hospitality venues and other small businesses city-wide to support.

On behalf of the Te Pae whānau, we wish you safe and happy holidays. We thank you for your support in 2022 and look forward to welcoming you through our doors in 2023.

Resilience and determination

As many of us start to wind down for the year and some of us, particularly in the hospitality sector, start to ramp up for what will be quite a busy period, the Canterbury business community has demonstrated again throughout the year the resilience and determination that sets us apart from many of the rest.

This year has not been without its challenges as the economy continues to contract and distort in response to both domestic and international events, yet the Canterbury region remains in a relatively good position.

The borders have reopened, we have more visitors in the city now than at any point in the three years prior, and despite 2023

expected to be di cult, it will bring with it many opportunities also.

Throughout the summer break, if you’re choosing to spend your time in the Canterbury region, I encourage you to get out and explore, see our sights, visit a small town you haven’t yet been to, and eat out at many of our amazing restaurants and bars from time to time.

Next year is expected to bring further economic challenges for households and businesses alike, and it is important to support local where possible so businesses in turn can invest in their sta , and in the city.

Whether you choose to kick around at the beach or head further afield, I wish you and your families an enjoyable festive season and a happy New Year.

See Christchurch this Christmas

New Regent Street, Cashel Mall, and Cathedral Square have Christmas installations, the banners are up, and shop windows are all looking extremely festive and bright.

The Christchurch City Council is supporting a whole range of entertainment and events in the lead up to the big day, so do come in and get behind our central city.

The fun doesn’t stop at Christmas with our New Year’s Eve event in Hagley Park shaping up to be a cracker with Dragon performing as the headline act and lots of entertainment for the kids in the early evening.

Sparks is celebrating its 40th anniversary on 21

January at North Hagley Park, and Anthony Harper Summer Theatre returns to the Botanic Gardens on 26 January.

HOWZAT! The Complete History of Kiwi Cricket promises to be a very funny and relaxed evening of outdoor theatre. I can’t forget Kite Day at New Brighton Beach on 4 February, a great day out with kites from di erent cultures and beach activities as well.

After having events cancelled due to Covid-19 the past couple of years, it is really wonderful to be getting back into the swing of things.

Hasn’t this time of year come around quickly?
LEEANN WATSON PHIL MAUGER MAYOR

There’s a song, a very old one, that goes something like this: “Where do you go to my lovely / When you’re alone in your bed / Tell me the thoughts that surround you / I want to look inside your head.”

And in this crazy world we all inhabit, it’s the things in our head that provide our greatest challenges and opportunities.

Here are some of the themes underpinning my thoughts over the course of the year – as we approach the time of traditional Christmas celebrations and with a new year pending, I thought I’d share them.

Nothing lasts forever.

That’s right. Not the market we enjoyed over the 2020/21 period, with its crazy abundance and astonishing results. Not those neverseen-before interest rates that made us all rush out to purchase more of everything.

It’s now a different time and a different world. There’s been a switch that’s seen investors settle back into the shadows due to difficultto-achieve returns and increased funding costs. Homeowners are seeing sharp reductions to their price expectations and buyers are having a bigger say in where the selling ‘sweet spot’ is.

Travel has re-emerged as a longawaited option: flights are full, holiday destinations over-subscribed and people are coming back to our own fair shores, bringing a much-

A Moment With My Thoughts

needed boost to our economy.

I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some incredible cities this year, including Sydney, Paris, London, Buenos Aires and Santiago, and I’ve noticed how hardworking and appreciative people are, especially in service and hospitality industries.

Nothing is too much. Special touches like complimentary wee canapes to accompany drinks or biscotti at the end of a meal, again complimentary, to say, ‘thanks for coming’. It makes a difference to feel appreciated and even in the simplest of businesses there was always a gesture saying, ‘thank you for your custom’. I know you will probably be thinking ‘I can’t give away my profits’, but the act of giving is often rewarded with loyalty and appreciation. I’ve tried to stay true to this principle in my life, both personally and professionally, and I believe in its ability to be inspire and encourage.

Our world, our environment, needs help, and we all have a part to play.

Sustainability is a concept we can’t simply ignore, and I’d like to incorporate a much greater emphasis on this in our business and at home as we move into 2023.

Less waste, mindful consumption, less paper, more education around the topic … it’s a big list but it’s a powerful one with major benefits for the future and the planet.

Health is everything.

Stress, long hours, poor nutrition, no exercise or over-exercise harms us.

Maybe this Christmas is the right time to rethink your own personal plan, which you can then try to apply incrementally.

I’ve started mine this year by reading every morning rather than starting the day scrolling on my phone, followed by daily walking at ungodly hours.

It’s helped, and if I quieten the voice inside my head saying, ‘do more work, do more work’, I know it will keep helping.

Family first.

I have been blessed with a close and loving family.

Although that is not the case for everyone, I hope that you find some time with family or friends this Christmas and may the year ahead bring you the time and space to move forward.

Finally, thank you for letting me share a little bit more than a perspective based on sales statistics and financial pondering. Just like that song …

There’s so much more in the thoughts that surround me.

Happy Christmas and a wonderful 2023!

The former laundry building, on the outskirts of Hillmorton campus, is being transformed into a purpose-designed facility for children up to the age of 18 to access specialist mental health community outpatient support.

Hann Construction expects strengthening of the foundations and core of the existing building will take six months. Currently the detailed design of the internal spaces

and the extensive, therapeutic landscaping plan are being finalised. “With the builders on site, our vision for a better space for our children and young people is coming to life,” says Māia Health Foundation Chief Executive Michael Flatman. Māia is working alongside Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury on the project, and has so far raised $3.5 million towards its $6 million goal. The tender for the main contractor for the fit-out of the building will be released

once design is completed and it is expected construction will begin on this next phase of the project in 2023.

Kahurangi will include state-of-the-art spaces for assessments, play and family therapies, spacious group therapy spaces, purpose-built clinical rooms for physical needs, a dedicated outdoor space, a welcoming environment and sensory room, and a whānau room. It is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

The club was o cially opened in early December by Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger. The project was developed through the pandemic, amidst construction material shortages and several compulsory club closures due to nationwide lockdowns.

General Manager Tim Mathews says the club has overcome many challenges during its redevelopment. “The completed club

is phenomenal, and is a significant step for the organisation as it sets to ensure its future viability and success,” he says.

“Clubs throughout New Zealand have faced many challenges in the past few years as the way New Zealanders like to dine and socialise has changed. In fact, many clubs have sadly closed as they haven’t moved with the times quick enough.

“The new generation of patrons want

variety and a place which the whole family can attend. This has meant a shift away from traditional ‘Club Life’ was required to attract new members to ensure a strong future,” he adds.

The new club has three bars and restaurants, a 450-person events centre, two children’s playgrounds, a family bu et, live music venues, and multiple private dining and meeting rooms.
