Looking out for neighbours, thinking about others ahead of ourselves, and giving a little when needed have all become part of daily life. Long may it continue. The coming weeks also bring

Check in to Isolation Hotel Cantabrians are encouraged to put themselves in the frame in a new exhibition at Canterbury Museum. Isolation Hotel is a unique, immersive art experience by Auckland artist Heather Straka, brought to Christchurch by the museum in collaboration with SCAPE Public Art.
V
isitors to the exhibition will check in to a speciallyconstructed set designed to evoke a once opulent but now run-down 1930s German hotel. The set forms the backdrop for a series of Straka’s own photographs, which feature a diverse cast of mysterious characters seeking sanctuary in the hotel. These images recall the epic history and mythology paintings of Caravaggio, Rubens and Rembrandt, hinting at soap opera-esque backstories, secrets and dates with destiny. Straka hopes visitors will be able to find a character to
identify with in her photos, but also use the set as a backdrop for their own photos that tell their unique stories. A series of public programmes organised by guest curator Audrey Baldwin will see the set brought to life in a variety of ways throughout the exhibition. Planned programmes including life drawing, poetry, theatre, artists working in the space, film screenings and a cabaret performance. Straka hopes museum visitors embrace the opportunity to express themselves on her set. “I feel that a lot of art can alienate the viewer, but I

hope Isolation Hotel does the opposite. I’ve left the experience open-ended and enigmatic so people can project their own dreams, desires and anxieties onto the scene. Isolation Hotel can mean whatever you want it to.” Canterbury Museum Director Anthony Wright says Isolation Hotel is a unique experience and he’s thrilled to be hosting it. “Heather Straka has created a totally wacky experience – it’s certainly unlike anything we’ve had at the museum before! I’m sure it will generate a lot of fun.” Isolation Hotel runs until March 20 next year.

Celebrating ‘Tis the season to be jolly, and Christmas means different things to different people. Metropol asked a few of our well-known locals about what it means to them.
O
Lianne Dalziel Christchurch City Mayor Lianne Dalziel plans to spend her Christmas in town catching up with family.
I
may slip away for a few days afterwards, but a ‘staycation’ is definitely on the cards,” she says. “Last Christmas I helped serve meals at the City Mission lunch, but Covid-19 has put paid to that this year. “People seemed to get a real kick out of having the Mayor serve them, so I had been looking forward to doing that again. It would have been my last time in the role of Mayor. Hopefully an ‘extinguished’ Mayor will be good enough in the future!” For Lianne the Christmas spirit is about coming together with family and friends. “The Christchurch Dalziels connect with the Wellington, Perth and Tokyo Dalziels and chat about the year that was. This is something I always look forward to. And the cousins always put on a Boxing Day barbeque, which is another family get together – except for the cricket fanatics who always watch the Boxing Day Test.” And her most memorable Christmas “was actually the first time I went to England, Scotland and France. I went with my relatively new boyfriend, Robbie, who I fell in love with, and married five years later! That was definitely the best”.

ne thing I have noticed though, as I get older, is it seems to come around quicker! It’s a time for me to get all the year’s projects together, wrap them up and clear my desk. It’s amazing what you can do in the office in the last three weeks, before Christmas. “In the final countdown of five days, like many others, I rush around buying all those last minute gifts. The final week is very social with drinks and lunches. “Now we have a caravan we’re thinking of all the last minute, “can’t do with-outs” that have to be installed before we head north.” For Mike, Christmas day is generally a long lunch, in the sun, by the pool with the family. “Regrets and guilt, on excessive food intake, generally set in about 5pm when I’m still scoffing 4th and 5th helpings of dessert. Boxing Day we’re on the road with the caravan, wife Rachel and our three dogs. “Golden Bay here we come. Generally two weeks in the region of Motueka and Kaiteriteri. We spend most days (road) cycling, mountain biking, coffees, BBQs and a few gins. “Christmas is friends, family and fun times.”
Mike Pero Businessman Mike Pero says Christmas is always a special time for him and also his family.

Chris Parker Comedian and actor Chris Parker is excited to come home for Christmas.
I
will be spending this Christmas with my family in Robinsons Bay in the Banks Peninsula. “As someone who has been locked in Auckland for most of the year, the prospect of being anywhere that isn’t my flat is extremely exciting.” Born and raised in Canterbury, Chris has lived up north for years now, but still considers Christchurch a special home, which makes returning for Christmas all the sweeter. “To me, Christmas is all about the family coming together and sharing our love for one another. “My most memorable Christmas was maybe memorable for the wrong reasons, but I was 10 years old and there was a strong nor’wester blowing through which always gives me a hell of a migraine. “I was very sick in my bedroom, while my cousins and siblings played with the new board game Mouse Trap. “I still want to buy myself that game as I feel robbed of the experience all those years ago.”
love Christmas and all of the good will that it brings,” she says. “I’ll be spending Christmas in our happy place with whānau at our home in Rapaki, although the mother in me will miss that extra seat at the table usually filled with our son Nicholas who is working overseas, and, like many, unable to be with us. “It will be days of cooking and entertaining whānau and friends in the garden with my husband Nuk, enjoying our three sons who are here, reflecting on the year and watching kererū get fat on our plums. “To me Christmas means the sharing of love, food, giving and togetherness. It’s a time to reflect on those who are no longer with us and those who can’t be with us, a time to be thankful and a time of new beginnings. ”My most memorable Christmas is a hard one to choose from, however my memory lands at a Christmas table, when my parents were still with us and our four sons were little, my mum beaming as she served Christmas lunch to all 26 of us, so happy to have us all there together. That is exactly how I feel on Christmas Day – happy. “Wishing you a Meri Kirihimete - Merry Christmas.”

Bringing the show to you Last week TVNZ viewers may have seen Christchurch-based reporter Ali Pugh in a special programme, The New Zealand Agricultural Show. She talks to Metropol about the feelgood and educational aspects of agricultural and pastoral shows.
roadcaster Ali Pugh has been presenting and reporting for TVNZ for more than 10 years. These days the mother of three girls, and former Breakfast host works as a producer and journalist for One News. Ali has covered many of the major events of the last few years - including the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes, the Pike River Mine disaster and the Covid-19 pandemic. Last Sunday, together with Tangaroa Walker, (pictured) a South Island farming social media personality, she co-presented a new TV special to replace Canterbury’s NZ Agricultural Show, canned for the last two years because of Covid-19. As a child. Ali went to numerous agricultural shows. Now she’s sharing the love. “I love how they get town children, including my own, to interact with animals, which is one of the main reasons the show exists,” she says. “Filming of the show meant we could keep the Ag Show alive. “We met some real characters,

from boar breeders to a guy who made a kayak from wool. “It was amazing seeing some of the guys from A Dog’s Show era, when sheep trialling took the country by storm in the ‘70s and ‘80s, meet the new young guns. It was a lot of fun.” The hour-long special gave people a chance to come together and meet some of today’s great agricultural characters as well as some from the show’s 158-year history. “I helped get a bull ready for a virtual beef competition, Tangaroa learned how to milk goats and joined a regional farmers surfing group striving to make a difference,” says Ali. “This [show] celebrates the diversity of New Zealand’s rural community, giving farmers and New Zealanders of all ages something to enjoy at the end of another challenging year.”

Holiday art and culture With two new exhibitions, The Moon and the Manor House and Leaving for Work, visitors to Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū this summer can enjoy a mix of new acquisitions and old favourites presented in a new context.
T
he Moon and the Manor House showcases the aesthetic and arts and crafts movements of the late 19th to early 20th century. “The Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements came about partly in reaction to the uninspiring type of industrial production of the Victorian era,” says curator Ken Hall. “Artists at the time made the pursuit of beauty and ‘art for art’s sake’ their highest goals, and this ambition included fostering an appreciation for handmade items. More and more, art schools encouraged students to take inspiration from nature. The work we’re showcasing here is very beautiful and evocative of an era that takes us from the late Victorian to the 1930s and 40s – as well as paintings, it includes printmaking, ceramics, fine metalwork and architectural design,” Hall says. The flow of culture between hemispheres saw many British artists and teachers coming here, and New Zealand-born artists studying, working and living abroad. Notable artists with work in The Moon and the Manor House include Charles Kidson, a teacher at the Canterbury College School of Art at the turn of the century, as well as Christopher Dresser, Gertrude Demain Hammond and Sir Alfred East. Charles Kidson’s work is also showcased in Leaving for Work, which is running alongside The Moon and the Manor House. “It’s a sort of artistic career expo – Leaving for Work presents the work of a variety of artists, all of them exploring the aesthetic and expressive possibilities of everyday working life, and giving dignity to labour,” Hall says. A selection of mainly historical and modernist works follows a path established by mid-19th century French artist Jean-François Millet, represented by two exquisite etchings. Leaving for Work presents different perspectives on those who had to earn a living, from rustic labour to factory work, keeping shop, making repairs, domestic servitude and performance on stage. Kidson’s portrait of Christchurch potter Luke Adams in his workshop adds a local view. Complementing the selection is an engaging, large-screen digital presentation of little-known images by early Christchurch photographer Steffano Webb. The images, from the Alexander Turnbull Library collection, give an evocative sense of working life in early Christchurch. Both exhibitions are open until May 1 next year.

Using a polymer blended with wool fibre, and featuring a patented locking system, the UV resistant batten is designed specifically for use on farms and to replace treated wooden timber

combining natural fibre with polymer - ultimately reducing the amount of plastic consumed in long life recyclable products.” The use of wool fibre in a fencing batten heralds an exciting new direction for fencing products and sustainability, as well as providing another much needed avenue for the often undervalued resource of wool. “The highly engineered matrix of wool fibres embedded in the batten provides added strength and durability,” says Thomas Nye from Shear Edge, adding that the Batten SE remains 100 percent recyclable and will not rot, splinter or leach like treated timber products.
Styx Solutions Ltd and Shear-Edge. “We have long been dedicated to developing a more cost-effective and environmentally-sustainable fencing batten product for the rural industries,” says Styx Solutions Ltd director Darryn Ross. “While our original metal Easy Batten was a success, we were driven to continue striving to develop a product that ticked even more boxes – labour saving, user friendly, long life and recyclable. The Styx Batten SE is the result of that journey and we are super excited to be partnering with Shear Edge in the development of what is the first of many products

Here are Nicole’s tips for starting the ball rolling. Now, Where, How? It’s pretty simple really – you need to know where you are now, where you want to be and how to get there: • Now – this is your starting point. Consider your current financial position, how many hours you work, what roles do you take on in the business, and how business profit and cashflow are looking? • Where – next think about what your vision for the future is? What does your ideal future financial position look like and what kind of working life do you want? • How – this is about how you get to where you want to be.
Perfect time for planning One positive related to the events of the last two years is the opportunity we’ve had to think about what’s important now and in the future.
B
usiness-wise, we should be regularly redefining our plan and goals, to ensure we are on the right track to achieve our goals, says Nicole Hague of NH + Associates. “Business planning can easily get bumped to the bottom of the to-do list. It never feels urgent enough or maybe we are too busy to do it. “During Covid lockdowns, some business owners have had the time and probably a better perspective on why this planning is so critical. In a business-as-usual environment, being dynamic and nimble, able to adapt quickly and effectively is always important and this ‘new normal’ has made flexibility even more critical.”
Nicole says that a well-considered Business Plan gives a competitive advantage. “It’s essentially a map and an important decision-making tool that helps us know where we’re going. It’s also a working document, something to be referred to daily; not something that sits in a drawer collecting dust. “Business goals are inextricably linked to personal goals so business planning can take you on quite a journey. Do you want more time, or more money? Do you want to step back or step up? From a business perspective do you want to diversify or become more profitable within your existing range?
Thought starters: • What is your business purpose? • Who is your ideal customer, your market? • Are any operational changes needed? • Do you have the right team? • Do you have enough funding?
Set Goals Once you have considered the Now, Where and How, you can start to set goals and think about: • Annual personal and business goals • Strategies to achieve your goals • Identifying revenue targets and key performance indicators • Identifying opportunities and vulnerabilities in your business that need to be managed It’s a good idea to have a business plan in development before the start of the new financial year. Don’t put off ‘til tomorrow what you can do today. Over the summer, think about your goals, put them down on paper. Then come and see us - NH+A can help bring your vision to fruition. we-inspiring. There really is no other way to describe the Mackenzie Basin landscape. Yet comfortably hunkered down among the tussocks and surrounded by the soaring Ben Ohau Range rests the surprise that is Skylark Cabin. Named for the birds that nest on the property, Skylark Cabin is architecturallydesigned accommodation built in 2020 in a wonderfully secluded location and with many thoughtful features. Its isolation, stillness and peace cannot fail to soak away the hubbub of the world outside. It’s so quiet at night you can hear frogs croaking from over a kilometre away. And at night there are the stars too. This is a star-gazer’s paradise as the cabin is nestled within the world-acclaimed Aoraki/ Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. Lie back in your king size bed and observe the Milky Way through the massive skylight. Or watch the stars while relaxing in the outdoor bath. You don’t need to leave the cabin and its facilities to experience the magic of the region, but if you can tear yourself away there are plenty of other activities close by. Aoraki/Mt Cook, Twizel, lakes Pukaki, Ohau and Tekapo are all just short drives away for swimming, fishing and walking or action and adventure. If retreat and chilling–out are on your agenda, Skylark Cabin isn’t just a stunning place to stay – it’s an experience in itself. elcome to the private luxurious experience that is Annandale in Pigeon Bay. In an area of outstanding beauty and off the tourist trail, Annandale is a coastal farm escape offering four award-winning luxury villas coupled with relaxed Kiwi-style informality. Developed in 1843, Annandale was one of the earliest farms in New Zealand’s South Island. The centrepiece of this historic farm is the restored five-bedroom Annandale
Homestead overlooking the ocean. Rustic and thoroughly charming, the authentic Shepherd’s Cottage provides a rural retreat for two. Scrubby Bay, a luxurious 4-bedroom beach house in its own bay is the perfect location for a celebration of family and friendship. The jewel in Annandale’s crown is Seascape, an ultra-modern retreat in another picturesque private bay providing a truly romantic experience for couples.
Fresh and delicious local produce is a hallmark of a stay at Annandale with whichever dining option you choose – from a private chef dinner to cuisine created and delivered directly to your villa. Of course it is also the outside activities that really set Annandale apart. The most popular activity is the farm tour as it is the essence of what Annandale is about, while the waters surrounding the property are perfect for guided kayaking. Or guests can relax with spa service in their villa. From sunrise to sunset your experience at Annandale will be unforgettable. www.annandale.com
Indulge yourself T
ry to wrap your head around what comes above 5-star excellence and your imagination will soar to Queenstown’s first 6-star hotel. It is the latest project for Kevin Carlin, a US-born entrepreneur and creative who has called New Zealand home for more than 30 years. The Carlin Boutique Hotel opens in
February 2022 and will offer a new level of opulence and service for people who have a taste for the finer things in life. Kevin regards each guest as distinguished and his staff truly know the meaning of service. “Like me, they have made careers out of service,” says Kevin, whose background includes being a qualified chef and butler to Hollywood stars. His observation is that New Zealand is evolving from its tall poppy past and
Queenstown is embracing a true luxury hotel, of a world class standard, providing butlers, chefs, massage therapists, mixologists, hotel ambassadors and concierge. And a grand piano in the Presidential Suite, if you choose to tinkle the ivories as your host Kevin does. The Carlin overlooks Lake Wakatipu, is spread over seven floors and offers a range of spacious suites in 1, 2 and 4-bedroom configurations with indoor and outdoor living space.

Have you noticed the recent boom in Pilates Studios opening in Christchurch? Have you been interested in giving it a go but not sure if it is right for you? Metropol talks to Cath Julius, Clinical Director of Freedom Health Physio & Pilates, about Clinical Pilates and how it can help you.
Pilates for everybody
Since opening its doors in 2017, Freedom Health has helped thousands of people rediscover the joy of movement and exercise. “I am incredibly proud that we have created a system and environment that allows more people to keep fit and active. “So often we hear that people have tried different exercises, they’ve even tried
In a nutshell, Clinical Pilates is Pilates exercise with registered Health Professionals. Pilates Physiotherapists have expert training and knowledge in movement, injury assessment and Pilates exercise. It is a winning combination for people looking at exercise options that support their health and injury recovery.
Move smarter, not harder
One of the key mantras for Clinical Pilates Therapists is to help people work smarter, not harder, which flies in the face of most fitness advice that promotes that you need to push hard to get results. “We love helping people find ways to move with more ease and freedom. It doesn’t mean that we don’t challenge people. But by using our training and expertise, we can work with individuals to find more efficient ways to move”, says Cath. “There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone find a way to perform a movement that they previously thought impossible to do”.
Pilates, but they are frustrated that they keep getting injured”, says Cath. “That is the key difference with Clinical Pilates. We know how to adapt to make the exercise work for any individual. From postnatal women to cancer survivors, to active older adults wanting to keep fit and mobile, we can find a way to make Pilates work for you.”

This is particularly true for males. Aneurysm screening is one of the many services available at CVG. Currently New Zealand does not have a national screening programme, meaning there is no way to exclude an aneurysm, unless it is identified incidentally. The easy alternative provided at CVG is a simple, non-invasive, inexpensive test that can be performed in minutes. Speak to your GP to obtain a referral or call CVG on 03 365 4502 to make an appointment, especially if aged over 65, or younger if there is a family history of aneurysmal disease.

onsultant specialist vascular surgeon Peter Laws and the team at Christchurch Vascular Group (CVG) offer a dedicated vascular ultrasound service, that may save your life. What is an aneurysm? In Peter’s words, “Simply put, an aneurysm is a dilated blood vessel. However, if it remains undetected as it dilates, there is an increased risk of rupture. Such a rupture, if it happens in the community, can often prove fatal.” He says thankfully, the risk of rupture is low for small aneurysms but the prevalence in the community is relatively high and increases with age, ranging from five to 22 percent as age increases.

The final flourishes From traditional and elaborate dinner tables to casual and rustic lunch settings, here are a few tips on creating your perfect festive table. Choose your theme
Decide on a few core colours, and use those to keep the table looking cohesive. This could be traditional red and green, all things gold, or something more neutral with pops of bright orange or yellow. If you are setting up an outdoors table, then leaning into a more summery, rustic look works well. Alternatively, an inside dinner table is an opportunity for twinkling lights and candles.
Layers on layers
The best way to add impact to your table setting is with layers. It instantly separates a standard table setting to a celebratory, festive one. Start with a tablecloth, then add a table runner that fits with your theme. Add your bowls and plates, layered up in the order of courses. Napkins and cutlery can be placed next, with beautiful decorative elements last to finish the table.
Festive flavour
Ornaments aren’t just for the tree and can be the perfect addition to the Christmas table to give it the final festive flourish. Try some baubles in bowls, decorations along the table runner or tinsel wrapped around vases. Christmas themed candles and lights work here well to bring the whole setting to life and add some romance.

1. 2.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. Line a 20x20 cm square baking dish with baking paper.
3.
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the egg and egg yolks. Add the sweetened condensed milk, lemon zest, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt until combined. Pour the mix over the cracker crust. Return to the oven and bake for 15-17 minutes, until just set. Allow the bars to cool in the pan, then place in the fridge to cool completely, at least 2 hours or overnight.
4. 5.
Cut into bars. Just before serving, spoon over the browned butter raspberries. The bars can be kept chilled in the fridge for up to 4 days.
In a small bowl, mix together the cracker crumbs, melted butter, and brown sugar. Press the mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Transfer to the oven and bake 15 minutes, until light golden on top.
To make the raspberries, add the butter to a skillet set over medium heat. Allow the butter to brown lightly until it smells toasted, about 2 minutes. Stir often. Remove from the heat and add the lemon zest. Gently toss the berries with the butter and spoon overtop the bars.

Hop along to Gebbies Valley Follow the three lop eared rabbits to a place just far enough away and still close enough for an easy day trip in the school holidays.
T
he White Rabbit Garden Cafe is adored by children. It is home to Carrot, Blue and Basil who live in their own cottage, at the bottom of a run. As with many in the property market, the trio are planning improvements. Owner Theresa Temesvary says the rabbits have their hearts set on an Alice in Wonderland garden. “What the rabbits want, the rabbits get. We would love to have input from the kids about
what would be fun for children and the rabbits. So, come out and let us know your ideas.” Fanciful ice creams with edible rabbit ears and cherries for noses, could be another reason that the children love the cafe. There’s a dedicated kids menu that includes Humpty Dumpty Eggs and Soldiers, Munchkin Platter and Bunnycakes. The adults can treat themselves to an ice cream
spider, or a milkshake. There are so many delicious options for brunch, fresh sandwiches, salads and yummy home baking.

Liquorice allsorts One of the lovely recipes in ‘Harbour Kitchens Another Helping’ cookbook, published by the Lyttelton Education Charitable Trust as a fundraiser for Lyttelton Primary School. CONTRIBUTED BY RITA NORRIS
Makes 120 pieces
T
his recipe came from Ann Stanaway through a Christmas workshop in the late 1990s run by the Well Women’s Group. It has become a family tradition to make these every Christmas! I sometimes make half from raspberry liquorice for colour contrast. Combine 600g dessicated coconut and 400-600g icing sugar with enough condensed milk (usually a 400g tin) to get a pliable mixture. (I use a 60 percent coconut/40 percent icing sugar ratio).
1. 2. 3. 42 16 December, 2021 Metropol
Divide mixture into three parts and add food colouring of your choice to each one. Take a small handful of mixture and shape it into a rough rectangle, place a piece of liquorice (try RJ’s Soft Eating Natural Liquorice, 2 x 300g bags) in the middle and fold mixture around the liquorice to form a log. Roll in coconut. Place in fridge to firm, and then cut each log into 4-5 pieces. Available at Lyttelton retailers or at www.harbourkitchens.org

hanks to Little River Cafe and Store, those on the keto diet can take off spontaneously as well, no need for a palaver around preparing food to take in advance. Filled keto bagels and keto cheesecake are two of the popular bites on offer that tick all the keto boxes. Keto is just part of the story, there’s something to please all tastes, including a growing range of gluten-free and vegan options. For early-birds, there are many hearty breakfast choices such as the classic big breakfast, and a creamy coconut and almond porridge. At the end of the day, takeaways are available for a picnic dinner. Don’t forget the essential coffee. The coffee bean of choice is from Mojo, beautifully smooth coffee served by baristas with flair. Pamper your beloved pooches Bonds between dogs and owners have been well researched, and the benefits of owning a faithful companion extolled regularly.
C
ompanionship is one of those and heading into the season of giving, it’s nice to give them something back. Here are some suggestions from Metropol to pamper your pooch, not just at Christmas but all year long.
1.
The French Bedroom, posh pooch pet bed
A soft bed to snuggle down in
Dogs sleeping on owners’ beds is not too hygienic so why not give them one of their own. Options range from squishy bean-bag styles to plush designer beds.
2.
A day at a doggy spa
3.
Their own wardrobe
Many pet owners have their pooches washed, dried and clipped regularly, but have you thought about a getting them a massage, a pedicure and styling too?
Animals feel the cold in winter and heat in summer so if you do dress them, adapt their outfits to fit the seasons. Choose from sparkly studded collars to bandanas, and full-on designer dresses.

ThinkPink CURATED BY LYNDA PAPESCH
from blush to fuchsia
P
ink is a shade that can work in any home no matter what your style so long as you pick the right colours to complement or contrast with it. The pink renaissance started back in 2017 with Pantone’s Millennial Pink and has stuck around. While most pinks can work in almost any colour scheme, there are some loose rules when it comes to finding the best colours to go with pink. Different combinations will suit different styles – a dark navy blue and deep pink works well in more contemporary spaces for example, whereas a sage green and light blush pink would have a more subtle feel. Here are some ideas on what colours are best to pair with pink and how to bring these combinations into your home.

PINK AND GREEN Pink and green is a versatile pairing that can have completely different vibes depending on the shades chosen. Go soft and subtle with a sage green and pale pink or pick a bolder scheme with an emerald or olive green and a more vibrant pink.
3.
build
1.
PINK AND GREY For a sophisticated look, soft pinks work well with a generous touch of grey to counteract any potential sugariness, or for a more edgy look try taupe with neon pink. If using lighter pinks, try adding a few darker accents with black or a very dark grey.
PINK AND BLUE Opposites attract and pink works well with blue, especially in bedrooms. Soft pinks and light blues harmonise with all-white colour schemes, while pairing navy with fuchsia adds energy to a room. Add a third colour – yellow maybe – for pops of interest.
4.
PINK AND WHITE Simple and subtle, pink and white create crisp, fresh feeling rooms that still have warmth and feel inviting. Most whites will work with most pinks, and pure white will work with anything from baby pinks to bright fuchsia.
5.
PINK AND BLACK Pairing any shade of pink with black creates a sophisticated, moody space. Even just a touch of black in an all-pink space will add some depth and drama. Adding a pink pop of colour to an all-black room will stop the space looking too gloomy.

Walnuts on wood
home
Getting rid of watermarks and scratches on wood by rubbing them with pieces of walnut works a treat. The oil in the nuts soaks into the wood, filling scratches and refreshing it.
Shifting stubborn stains
Oil on stainless
Try using a small amount of olive or similar oil on a soft rag to clean fingerprints and grease smears off stainless steel appliances. Don’t use too much, just a smear.
Copper cleaner
Try using tomato sauce and a toothbrush to clean copper pots and ornaments. Coat the copper with tomato sauce and leave overnight, before washing off. The acid in the sauce will remove the tarnish.
WORDS BY LYNDA PAPESCH
Old wives tales are full of suggestions about how to deal with tough stains using natural ingredients, nuts, oils and combinations of those. Here are some of those that I have tried and found actually do work.
Toothpaste on silverware
Put a dab of toothpaste on a soft cloth, rub it onto the tarnish, then rinse with water and dry with a clean cloth. Silver polish is quicker but if you want to go ’au natural’, this will get results, and smells nicer.
Vinegar and dishwashers
To clean the food trap and filter in your dishwasher, put two cups of white vinegar in a jug on the top rack, and run the otherwise-empty dishwasher on the hottest cycle.

MEET THE DEVELOPERS
Hedgley Corporation is very clear about their focus, “We are a company that builds architecturally designed homes with spec sheets that we have upgraded,” says Director Kian Clements-Ormond.
W
e have ensured there is a wide range to choose from, and our fundamentals are client care and relationship building. We make every part of the selection and building process enjoyable.” Further, every home they build receives a rib-raft foundation even if regulations do not require it. “We are about building homes our clients love to live in, and having piece of mind is central to that,” says Kian, “and of course a strong foundation is great for resale too.” The Hedgley team includes an architect and an interior designer, while project manager Jason Ashton is a secondgeneration builder with years of experience. “We have four teams of builders who are only ever working on 2 - 4 projects, so we are hands-on every build and very available to clients,” says Kian.
Homes in Leeston, Darfield, Amberley, and Te Whariki are going through different stages of the process at the moment. A variety of services are available, from full house and land packages, building on a client’s land, or taking on projects near completion. “Whatever we take on, we ensure it is concluded in good time, and with our materials orders going in at the stage of working drawings, we have no difficulties there,” says Kian. The most popular designs from the company’s own portfolio are Glasshouse I and Glasshouse II, incredibly stylish architectural designs that are perfect for Kiwi lifestyles. “We are all about affordable quality homes. We offer superior finishing and good customer service, and this is reflected in the repeat business we receive,” says Kian, “if that sounds like what you need, give us a call.”

Golden Meadows NZ helping build dreams
Amit Srivastav, Golden Meadows NZ
It is a classic Kiwi dream to build a new home or renovate, to create a house that suits your lifestyle perfectly and in a design that reflects exactly who you are. Getting started, however, can be daunting.
B
uilding company, area, house style, specifications... the list of decisions goes on and on. It would be fantastic to have that ‘fairy godmother’ figure, someone experienced, understanding and a great communicator to help you navigate through the process. That is where Golden Meadows NZ steps in. “We are independent, unbiased, new house and land package consultants,” says director Amit Srivastav. “We assist new home buyers in getting their dream home built by quality builders and help them in getting the
best deal. I make the building process hassle-free for first home buyers.” Pricing systems on new subdivisions are evolving. Amit is well-informed on the different approaches and can negotiate on your behalf. Working across New Zealand, Amit offers services that begin with educating you in preparing your budget, formalising your requirements checklist, narrowing your builder choice to a shortlist of three, arranging quotes from the shortlisted builders in a way that enables you to compare ‘apples with
apples’, assisting with loan approval, arranging a solicitor if needed, signing the contract with the chosen builder, finalising the floor plan and helping with appliance and colour choice for your new home. “If you are renovating, we can offer a bespoke package of assistance whether your job is large or small,” says Amit. “It will be exciting and so worth it if well planned, but being a big emotional and financial investment, it’s important to get it right, stick to the budget and get the outcome you envisaged.” www.facebook.com/GoldenMeadowsNz

If there’s one thing our lockdowns brought about, it’s the desire to reconfigure our living spaces into a visual delight.
A
long with this need for change is an equal need for a move away from the beige and bland. We want interiors that celebrate life, not shy away from it. Opulence is the new black. In décor terms, the word epitomises luxuriance, splendour, magnificence, grandeur, and sumptuousness. Kit and Caboodle is a long-established décor business that pays homage to opulence in all its finest forms. Wallpapers from Mind the Gap evoke memories of distant travels to exotic places and encompasses all periods, from contemporary through to ancient times. With its artistic identity rooted in its homeland of Transylvania, Mind the Gap takes its inspiration from the region’s diverse ethnic heritage and rich cultural history. These wallpapers are saturated in dense
colours and bold designs that laud the arts, architecture, artefacts, culture, and people. With your interior walls now looking so sublime, consider favourite furniture pieces reupholstered in an eye-catching fabric, or a sweep of new curtains that clothe the room in a stunning ambience. Nine Muses fabrics hail from interior designer and textile house founder Tigger Hall. Her collections are inspired from her years travelling and researching textiles in Turkey, Morocco, Greece and India. The hand-painted designs are printed digitally onto Belgian Libeco linen, using reactive dyes. Hand-painting lends the imperfections and colour variations typical of traditional textile processes. Nine Muses is exclusive to Kit and Caboodle and can’t be found anywhere else in New Zealand. The finishing touch to complement and
carry your chosen décor theme through to its most splendid completeness, will be key furniture pieces, paintings, sculptures and objets d’art. This is where Alex and Andrea of Kit and Caboodle can put their combined 40 years of interior decorating experience and knowledge into action. “We love changing things up, whether that be painting or reupholstering furniture, or reinventing pieces to give them a new lease of life,” Alex explains. “Those pieces that look dated or don’t fit the surroundings anymore, we can repurpose them into something that our clients fall in love with all over again,” Andrea adds. For inspiration on how to reconnect with your inner opulence, visit Kit and Caboodle, 7 Elgin Street, Sydenham Christchurch.

A merry and bright coastal Christmas With festivities falling into our summer season, most of our time is spent at the beach. It’s natural to bring these blues of nature indoors when we’re celebrating. Styling by Vanessa Nouwens | Photography by Bryce Carleton

W
ith the hustle and bustle of Christmas being stressful for many of us, decorating our homes in calming, tranquil blues will lend a calming, serene feel – the ideal medicine for a busy time! A crisp, upbeat blue in Resene Cut Glass is a hue that will boost the energy in the room, refreshing and energising, like the sea. This shade coats the floor and tongueand-groove wall, ensuring a light, serene base from which to layer your Christmas theme in varying levels of darker blue tones to master visual contrast. Look beyond your walls and floor when being creative. Get your artistic juices flowing with paint, scattering the blue tones across furniture and accents such as vases, bowls, throws and cushions. A cabinet can store presents and games
on Christmas Day, and any cutlery or crockery that you’ll use for your festive meal. Painted in Resene Kumutoto, its deep aqua is full of personality and shows how complementary colours lend bright character. Find your inner artist and create your decorations this year. Crafting them is a festive fun project of its own, transforming your house into a wonderland – a summer version! Swap out the traditional decorations and extend your beach décor theme on to the tree, presents and tabletop with homemade shell ornaments. Their curves sit perfectly amongst the traditional baubles, breaking them up with their unique shape – don’t forget the star at the top! Let the tonal blues flow further on
to your gift wrapping, with present boxes painted in tonal blues for an impressive effect. Finish with delicate blue ribbons and homemade shell gift tags. Take the shells and paint a letter on each, spelling out a word that evokes a Christmas meaning. Link each shell with twine to create your garland, hanging it on the wall for a personal touch that emphasises your blue tones. Touches of glistening gold in the cutlery, the earthy hue of the rustic twine and the timber legs in the side tables bring the scheme down to earth. Layering your tones from light to dark blues ground your festive space in a relaxed setting in which to soak up the festive fun.

Planting trees that count
Known for their ingenuity and DIY solutions, Kiwis constantly find ways and means to better our country. Among those are initiatives designed to help mitigate New Zealand’s carbon footprint by planting native trees, and another that helps to save our native kiwi species.
N
About Signature Homes Signature Homes is a privately-owned New Zealand-based company, working with franchise and construction partners. It offers design and build packages, plus a range of house and land packages and pre-designed homes.
66 16 December, 2021 Metropol
ow helping both those initiatives is Kiwi housing company Signature Homes, partnering with both the Trees That Count movement and the Save the Kiwi organisation. Trees That Count plants native tree species to help reduce emissions, strengthen New Zealand’s biodiversity and help forest ecosystems to thrive. Signature Homes approach to delivering better for the environment building methods is already underway, focusing on counteracting their emissions by planting native trees. Under their current build programme, they expect to be planting around 45,000 trees per year, which will absorb approximately 19,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions over the next 50 years as those trees continue to grow. Company Chief Executive Paul Bull expects Signature will plant around 45 native trees for every home it builds. It commissioned its own research to determine how many trees would be required to counter the emissions from building a three-bedroom home, from supply chain and material-
sourcing to transport and fuel. “We currently sell approximately 1000 homes a year, and realised that results in a significant carbon footprint,” he says. “We were determined to make our contribution to New Zealand’s goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050 and build a better future for Kiwis.” The company also plans to lead the industry in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from housing construction. “We have been building homes since 1983 and our name is synonymous with quality and continuous improvement. This is part of our commitment to New Zealanders that building a new home should not cost the environment.” To support the native tree initiative, Signature Homes has also signed on as a sponsor of Save the Kiwi, the national kiwi recovery programme. “They [kiwis] are a strong indicator of the health of our natural environment. More kiwis in our native bush means there are fewer predators around and few predators means more opportunities for other native birds and insects to thrive,” says Mr Bull.

Award-winning solution for extreme site Low key and timeless, the award-winning Black Quail House in Central Otago is both home to its owners and also a wine tasting room for their business.
D
esigned by Barcelona-based Bergendy Cooke Architects, the contemporary masterpiece nestles into a rocky hillside on a site dotted with wild thyme and rosehip. Located within historic mining tailings in a craggy, dry and at times inhospitable landscape, this house recently won the HOME magazine House of the Year Award for 2021. Needing protection from the elements without hiding from its extraordinary surroundings, created a unique home. “We wedged the house into the hillside (like the former stone miners’ huts still visible further up the valley) for protection from the elements, and opened up views to the river below and to the family’s vineyard above,” says Bergendy. A courtyard located to the south of the main living area has dictated a typically orthogonal floor plan, offering
an essential, secondary, protected exterior area and an opportunity to grow a lush garden, directly contrasting the harsh environment outside. Smaller courtyards to the east and west offer varying extended living scenarios and enhance the transparency throughout the building. Inspired by the rocky terrain, precast concrete walls were chosen as the main form of wall construction. A gentle sloped roof covered with shingle from the site accentuates the idea that the house is firmly imbedded in the landscape. Stone from site interspersed with precast concrete creates the outlying walls. Weathered steel cladding around the entry and garage make up the exterior palette, while to the interior wood panelling and wooden joinery items offer a warmer contrast to the robust exterior.

Raising the bar Designing and developing an inner-city health club proved an opportunity not to be missed. The end result is a Supreme Award-winning, resort-like facility, thanks to Christchurchbased Wilson and Hill Architects.
P
roviding architecture of a high calibre, Wilson and Hill is driven by a consistent philosophical approach, not a predetermined style, says director Stuart Hay.
Its philosophy to embrace modernist architecture and produce clean, spacious and light designs came to the fore in IHF Health Club, located in The Crossing in Cashel Street,
in central Christchurch. Turning three separate buildings, from the 1930s to 2016, into a relaxing health club was an “amazing opportunity,” says Stuart. Health club director Dan Hood agrees. “There’s never been a well-thought-out health club here before and now there is. Even though it has its activity zones, it still has a resort-like feel,” he says. Having different identities for each space was an important part of the project, both in its design and the end
look and feel. The club blends heritage and contemporary features throughout, and includes a yoga studio, various exercise apparatus areas, and a full members’ lounge that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. At the New Zealand Exercise Industry Awards this month, the IHF Health Club Christchurch won the Supreme Award and was named Idependent Facility of the Year. Judges noted that the club “is at the pinnacle of high end facilities”.

hat’s exactly what happened at Italian Restaurant Tutto Bene Christchurch, as two Ferrari Dino 246 GTs and one yellow GTS and their owners came together recently to celebrate the red Dino’s 50th birthday. While the Ferrari Dino road-going sports car itself was launched in 1967, the birthday Rosso Corsa Dino 246 GT of John Skevington and Jo Ruane left the Ferrari factory in Maranello, in October of 1971. Styled by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, it is arguably one of the prettiest sports cars ever built. “I reckon they are the most beautiful Ferrari ever made,” says John. “I saw one brand new for the first time at the 1971 Canterbury Court Motor Show and declared that I would own one someday.” John has owned his red Dino for 34 years. It started its life in the UK before John brought it to New Zealand. The Dino could also be described as an “Italian Matchmaker” for through the car, John and Jo had their first meeting. “The Dino was getting some bodywork done at Raxworthy’s Panel Beaters where I was working at the time,” recalls Jo. “I had admired the car for sometime and found out it belonged to John. I saw him and the car again at the Classic Car Concours at Pioneer stadium. We met, got chatting and it pretty much went from there,” she says with a smile.
NA
What makes the Dino unique in the Ferrari story is it was never originally supposed to carry the prancing horse Ferrari emblem. Named in honour of Enzo Ferrari’s late son who passed away from the effects of muscular dystrophy in 1956 aged only 24, the Dino range would be its own brand underneath Ferrari’s bigger V12 cars such as the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Leon Witte is the original owner of the white Dino. The combination of a mid-mounted 2.4L V6 producing 195hp and that gorgeous lightweight body made the Dino the perfect sports car for he and his wife Lois to enjoy. “I bought it new in 1973 through PDL who were the Christchurch agents for Ferrari at the time,” Leon recalls. “I lived in the hills and wanted something which would handle the turns well. The specification matched my criteria of what I wanted in a new car and after a test drive, I bought it, providing the dealer threw in a spare set of tyres,” he says. The yellow open top GTS was the rarest Dino on show. Owners Lindsay and Christine O’Donnell have had the car for 24 years. “It’s been a wonderful car,” says Lindsay. “For me it’s the styling and the fact it is now highly collectable.” The appeal of the Ferrari Dino 246 GT is a timeless one. Like a fine Chianti, every sip is utter delight. Happy Birthday Bella Macchina.

A great escape E
The Ford Escape comes in five variants with a PHEV and ecoboost versions and the ST line versions of those too.
ach gives you the option to choose what suits your lifestyle. The hands-free power tailgate is only available in the top two versions but you get what you pay for. What I’m enjoying about the new Fords is their connectivity app. Using it, you can lock the doors if you think you forgot to or cool/heat the cabin before you get in, the
latter a great winter feature. The 12-inch LCD screen had great connectivity; my friend in the passenger seat had loads of fun scrolling through the options. Other niceties include ambient lighting and a stylish cabin in the ST. I couldn’t fault the interior on what is apparently a smaller SUV. I found it spacious and fun to drive.
The sports steering wheel and the funky alloy sports pedals gave it a nice look, and it boasts plenty of power and some sleek lines. If you are after an SUV that gets you from A to B and is easy to use, the Ford Escape ST is simple. In these modern days, simple can be really satisfying.

Dreaming of a Honda WORDS BY BEN SELBY
When it comes to heritage and sheer diverseness of product, Honda is well and truly king of the hill.
W
e ran the first Honda Expo in 2016 and due to its popularity with customers and Honda fans, we decided to make it an annual event,” says Honda Store Christchurch Marketing Manager Gladys Chung. “Every year since, it has become bigger and bigger with more cars and
products being lent to us to display as part of our celebration of all things Honda,” she says. From the smallest N360 and S800 sports car, to a duo of original NSX supercars complemented by the only second generation NSX in New Zealand, there were cars for every Honda fanatic. This collection also included a Honda Integra with only 25,000km on the clock. There is more to Honda than just cars however. Motorcycles, ATVs, generators and four stroke garden tools, Honda’s range of engineering prowess is incredibly diverse. Company founder Soichiro Honda famously said, “We only have one future and it will be made with your dreams, if we have the courage to challenge convention.” Attending this year’s Honda Expo at Honda Store Christchurch would be enough to make anyone dream big.
