It can be a daunting feat producing a magazine every fortnight. Our hardworking team puts a lot into finding stories, getting in touch with all the required parties, organising imagery - and then designing it all into what you hold in your hands. And before the finished copies are even delivered to letterboxes, cafes and stands - the next one is already underway! One thing never lacking is the number of interesting and valuable local stories vying for position on Metropol’s pages. And this issue is no different. A few weeks ago we heard a whisper that Cantab and Hollywood bigwig, Phil Keoghan, was in town. We reached out to The Amazing Race host, and were over the moon when he was keen to be interviewed and grace the cover of this issue. So, I do hope you enjoy reading about his new reality competition which was inspired by none other than his hardworking West Coast grandparents. The series has another local tie, too – it was edited, in part, from he and his wife and producing partner, Louise’s, MIQ hotel room in Christchurch during their recent trip home. Bringing even more magic to our pages is the touching tale of New Zealand’s assistance dogs, chronicled in a new book by local author, Sue Allison. Add to that our round up of the Canterbury Earthquakes commemorations, art show Van Gogh Alive, an Italian classic car show, commentary on seasonal fashion, health, beauty, home, and design trends – and you have something wonderfully, uniquely local to read this February.

elevision audiences and reality competition contestants - the world over owe a lot to Phil Keoghan’s upbringing. His father’s work as a plant scientist and mother’s teaching skills saw the family live around the world, contributing to the adventurous spirit Keoghan has harnessed as host for all 32 seasons of The Amazing Race. Now, it is the practical skills of his West Coast grandparents

which inspired Tough as Nails, a celebration of the physical and mental strength of tradespeople. Born in Lincoln, Keoghan moved around a lot as a child - spending time in Canada, Australia and the Caribbean before returning to Christchurch as a teen to board at St Andrew’s College. but this show is really about acknowledging the people who make sure we can turn our lights on, that the toilets flush, that the roads are smooth, that we have food on our table and the world keeps working!” The show’s first episode aired earlier this month, making it one of the only pieces of fresh television created during the pandemic - a tough challenge in itself. Beyond the physical challenges of filming while observing social distancing and increased hygiene practices, the Keoghans were also responsible for the health and safety of hundreds of people working on the show. The reality of which didn’t sink in until they landed in New Zealand in early December. “Once we got into a quiet spot the weight of responsibility hit me. I was hugely relieved we were able to get through Covid19-free, but I couldn’t shut my brain down from thinking what could have gone wrong. “It was this horrible feeling of relief and also anxiety - it’s very hard to explain.” Keoghan acknowledges such challenges are “first world problems” compared to those endured by healthcare workers and millions of people around the world who have faced health issues, or lost family members of livelihoods during the pandemic. He says the idea of filming a future season of the US series in New Zealand away from the stress of shooting in Los Angeles while there is a pandemic, would be incredible. “If I had my way I would love to make a Kiwi version of Tough as Nails as well, after all, it’s where the idea came from.”

he learnt how to use tools and tackle practical tasks. “I got an appreciation for people who work in the trades, and the idea that people had these skills they could use to fix things and make the world work,” says Keoghan, who not only hosts the show, but cocreated and produced it with his wife and producing partner, Louise. The second season - in which tradies compete in a series of challenges to win $276,000NZD and a Ford F-150 Truck - was filmed in Los Angeles during the Covid-19 pandemic and edited, in part, from the Keoghan’s MIQ hotel room in Christchurch. His paternal grandfather, Jack Keoghan, was a particularly strong influence. He passed on an education scholarship to start working as a mechanic at just 13, and went on to become an aero mechanic in World War II, as well as representing New Zealand in target shooting. “It always irked me hearing people talk down about people like my grandfather,” says Keoghan. “That somehow intelligence is measured by where you went to school, or in order to be well read or to be smart you have to have a tertiary education. “My grandfather was very well read, he was very smart, top of his class, and one of the brightest people I have ever met. “Sometimes circumstances restrict a person’s ability to follow a certain path but that is not a reflection of their intelligence or contribution to society. “I see so many people who are being honoured for being able to sing or dance well...

Aging in style Studies show that by 2051 there will be 1.18million people aged 65 and over in New Zealand, an increase of 165 percent since 1999. It’s an unchangeable fact that we are all going to age, so why not do so in style? Metropol caught up with Arvida St Albans facility manager Symone Bruhns to hear how the aging experience is being transformed.

How does someone know if it might be time to look at retirement village options? “We all want to stay as healthy and well, both mentally and physically, for as long as we possibly can. As the natural process of aging occurs, people start to evaluate their quality of life and to assess if they need assistance with their day-today living.

Living a life with soul

As the natural process of aging occurs, people start to evaluate their quality of life and to assess if they need assistance with their day-to-day living.

“Living independently at home may start to feel challenging. A retirement village, or community as we prefer to call them, provides a good option for when factors like maintaining the family home, security concerns, companionship, access to services, day to day living and health issues become a challenge. St Albans Retirement Village offers a continuum of care from independent living options right through to palliative care.”

Tell us a bit about Arvida’s values. How do you want residents to feel in the community? “Our vision is to improve the lives and wellbeing of our residents by transforming the aging experience. We do this though our attitude of living well pillars which are: Eating well, moving well, thinking well, resting well and engaging well. Quality of life is important

for all of us and at Arvida our attitude of living well is revolutionary in aged care.” What’s on the cards for Arvida St Albans in 2021? “St Albans will have completely finished its construction in 2021 involving the opening of the new wings in March with serviced apartments including spacious north and west facing two-

bedroom apartments, and an expansion of new care rooms for people looking for rest home and hospital level care. St Albans prides itself on continually working to better resident’s day to day living and so in 2021 we also have a gym for independent residents and a new communal area in the Totara Living Well Apartments scheduled for completion.” www.arvida.co.nz

In dogs we trust WORDS TRACEY EDWARDES

The bond between human and dog is unmatched. And when a dog’s role is to help their person, intriguing tales are to be told. Love for animals was Sue Allison’s inspiration to write the book Friends Indeed: Assist Dogs and Their People. However, it was the human connections that captured her heart.

he 63-year-old Christchurch journalist and freelance writer lives on a lifestyle block in North Canterbury where she and her husband have raised four children as well as a menagerie of animals. “It’s a city girl’s dream,” she says. “So writing about animals as well is nirvana!” Sue has written two children’s books and recently Secrets of Small Gardens published by New Holland, who was keen to publish her next inspiration. “I have a background in anthropology. I’m not a newshound but I love writing, especially about humans and animals,” says Sue, who chose to write about dogs helping people in a health-related capacity such as sight, hearing and mobility impairment. She travelled around the country interviewing people with assistance dogs. “Everyone had a story. I thought it would be a hard job choosing which ones to include in the book but everyone I talked to is in it.” There are 41 chapters, each about a person, a dog, and their bond. The profiles include Cantabrians with heartwarming twists to the waggly, often hilarious, tales. “People loved telling me the naughty things their ‘goofy’ dogs did when off duty. These are serious stories but there’s plenty of light heartedness.” Errol from Christchurch certainly attracts children’s attention with a teddy bear riding the back of his guide dog, Prince. When Christchurch musician John Hore got his first guide dog, Brindy, in place of a cane, he felt like he was flying.

CHRISTCHURCH

The Carnahan family’s life changed when Lady walked through the door to help their son with autism. Young Juno’s reading flourished when she joined the New Brighton library’s Reading to Dogs programme, because “The dog doesn’t notice when I get a word wrong.” As an animal lover, Sue secretly feared the dogs would have a limited life. “But it was quite the opposite. They have 24/7 company, their own person, and a job. That’s a pretty perfect life for a dog. These dogs are so eager to help their people, and the trainers harness that desire.” While labradors leap to mind as the most common assistance dogs, there is a growing diversity of breeds. With their amazing sense of smell, spaniels make excellent diabetic detection dogs, while small breeds are perfect for the elderly and there is a move towards dogs such as poodles which don’t shed hair. Strong and amiable, golden retrievers are great for mobility assistance. While most assist dogs undergo rigorous training and are bred for their jobs, several dogs in the book are rescue dogs, including three saved from death row at the pound. “The dogs do so much more than their official roles,” says Sue. “For people with special needs, their dogs are a visible sign of often an invisible disability. They are also often a portal to more kindness, bringing out the best in everyone and acting as social conduits for people who can feel quite isolated. These dogs, and their people, are all heroes.”

From 12.30pm, patrons can picnic on Lansdowne’s immaculate lawns (or book lunch in the restaurant at Lansdowne’s gate, The Bicycle Thief). There will also be a Thursday performance, on 18th March, at 7.30pm. This year’s chosen opera for narropera presentation, ‘Der Freischütz’ (1821), is one

of the most beautiful and possibly the most influential opera ever written. an Gogh Alive has received rave reviews from around the world, as the artist’s timeless masterpiece are projected onto every surface of an exhibition space – taking viewers quite literally inside the artist’s work. An evocative classical music score adds even more atmosphere to the event, which showcases thousands of the Dutch artist’s post-impressionist landscapes, still lifes, portraits and selfportraits. Christchurch is just one of three New Zealand cities to host the event which has been highly acclaimed the world over, receiving kudos from The Guardian, The Sydney Morning Herald, Forbes, and others during tours of Shanghai, Rome, Dubai, Paris and many more. While much of the world remains in lockdown, not only are local art lovers lucky to attend any public event – but they can also see the European cities which inspired Van Gogh, through his eyes. Created by Australian Bruce Peterson, the idea came around when he was living in Europe and taking his children to incredible museums, only for them to get bored five minutes in. Van Gogh Alive has been created to engage audiences of all ages and all levels of interest in art.

Works on display include The Starry Night, his vivid nightscape of the sky from his bedroom in an asylum; a collection of self-portraits; Irises, and many more. The exhibition includes those inspired by his time spent in Netherlands, Arles, Saint Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise. Live Nation New Zealand Managing Director Mark Kneebone says the event is for all ages, and has been set-up to allow for contact-free and socially distanced viewing. “Over six million people around the world have experienced this incredible immersive experience, including sold out seasons across Australia. We can’t wait to share the magic of Van Gogh with Kiwis in 2021.” On now until March 19 at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, Wigram. Buy tickets at www.ticketmaster.co.nz.

The Pandemic Pivot

Celebrating small Canterbury businesses innovating in hard times

Casting the net wider Pandemic-induced closed restaurants meant casting the net wider for Christchurch’s Oceans North Seafood, which quickly whipped up an online ordering and home delivery service for Kiwi foodies and families keen to join the ilk of the country’s top chefs and restaurants.

long-time preferred wholesaler for premium and sustainably sourced seafood from around the South Pacific, Oceans North Seafood made a quick pivot after Covid-19 saw eateries around the country close their doors during lockdown. Now, the 100 percent family owned and operated business’ retail offerings are as fresh as its seafood products. “From Fiordland and the Southern Alps, through Kaikoura to the Chatham Islands and New Caledonia, we cast our net far and wide to bring the freshest tasting and most sought-after varieties of seafood,” says Bruce Keenan, who bought the business with his wife, Lisa, in 2016. The new online marketplace offers customers transparency and comfort in knowing where their food comes from because

sustainability is a core value for the Keenans. “New Zealanders love sea food and we love serving the Kiwi taste for our ocean’s bounty. But without proper protections, future generations may not have the luxury of dining out on this precious — internationally recognised — resource.” “Quality assurance for Oceans North Seafood is not just about freshness and taste — it’s also about quality of life and environment. That’s why we source our diverse range of seafood from companies that safeguard marine habitats through sustainable fishing practices, adherence to strict national quota rules and conservation efforts.” On that note, Bruce recommends getting in quick for the upcoming Bluff Oyster season! www.oceansnorth.co.nz

Protecting your privacy A recent Apple update is being touted as big news for consumers, who can now opt out of brands using their data. It’s just the latest move by the tech giant to give users more protection for their ever valuable data, and is being labelled as “seismic” for consumers and digital media alike.

Athol McCully and Cecilia Xiao Athol and Cecilia are experienced Business Brokers as a part of New Zealand’s largest team of NAI Harcourts Business Brokers. If you are seeking to buy or sell a business contact Athol or Cecilia.

Athol 0274 338 052 Cecilia 021 0256 3311 Grenadier Real Estate Ltd MREINZ. Licensed Agent REAA 2008

he iOS 14 update – which powers iPhones - allows users to control how they share their data, as well as who and what they share their data with. With the change, iPhone users will need to be asked by apps - like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - for permission to share their data. They will see a pop-up window in each app to warn if their data is being tracked for advertising purposes, and give them the option to opt in – or out – of this practice. Such data tracking has come under fire for ethical reasons, and been linked to election interference and spreading controversial conspiracy theories and misinformation, as outlined in hit Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma. It is also the foundation of digital media models which connects advertisers to consumers based on personal data like age, location, gender, interests and other insights.

Such insights are often collected when signing up to and using an app. An article from CNBC labels the move “seismic”. “Apple is making a huge change to settings on users’ iPhones in the name of privacy, and it will fundamentally change the way apps track your data in order to create targeted ads,” says the article. An article on the same topic, on Digitalmarketer.com, says the change is “groundbreaking.” “While most people, consumers and tech giants alike, would agree that an increase and focus on personal data security is a good thing, it does have a very massive effect on one thing in particular: advertisement personalisation. “Simply put, it could be harder for advertisers to reach their target audience like they do. That means online advertising, at least to iOS devices, could become significantly less effective.”

Q: I’m thinking of selling my business, how should I prepare for that? A: That’s a very good question, and we recommend attending

a free seminar entitled “Preparing Your Business for Sale” which will be held on Tuesday 23 February at 4 – 5.30pm at the Auction Room, Harcourts Grenadier, 98 Moorhouse Avenue. Three speakers with real expertise in this will speak on the legal aspects, financial aspects, and on governance structure of a business and succession planning. If you wish to attend please register by emailing claire.savage@ naiharcourts.co.nz. If you are unable to attend, please contact Cecilia Xiao (ph 021 0256 3311) or Athol McCully (027 433 8052) for a confidential discussion on this topic. Metropol 18 February, 2021 21

LINK Buiness Brokers at the recent REINZ Awards

Business sales set to grow

Low interest rates, retiring baby boomers, returning expats, migration and growing business confidence as New Zealand remains Covid-19-free is contributing to a “cautiously optimistic” Canterbury business community, according to LINK Business Brokers’ latest market update.

L

INK Christchurch Sales Manager Katherine Shepherd says local Canterbury businesses have found themselves in a better position than they were

twelve months ago, despite the uncertainty and fear experienced during the Covid-19 lockdown. In fact, the company recorded the busiest year in

its 24 year history to October 2020. LINK also had a clean sweep at the latest REINZ awards - winning all available business brokerage industry

awards. The Christchurch office won Small Business Brokerage of the Year. So what’s fuelling the activity? Key indicators include: Low interest rates; government policy creating potential for more focus on business lending; baby boomers retiring and selling up; returning expats looking for small business ventures over employment, and business confidence building the longer we remain Covid-19 free. Other factors include: Migration (especially to the South Island); the lack of a Capital Gains Tax, and a growing attitude to the security building equity by running your own business can bring. Katherine says New Zealand is very much the envy of the world at the moment. “If you are looking to sell up and retire or buy that perfect business, 2021 could just be the year to make it happen.”

The leaves are almost turning, and we are absolutely falling (get it?) for a new autumnal colour palette destined straight for our wardrobes. Bottega Veneta feature the happy hue in their pre-fall collections, and Pantone named Illuminating (a vivid yellow) one of 2021’s colours of the year. Stretch it out WORDS ELLA SOMERS

Meghan Markle does it, Vogue has given it the tick of approval and now #faceyoga is gaining millions of views on TikTok. So, is this a beauty habit you should be implementing into your routine?

F

ace yoga uses special facial exercises, stretches and massage techniques to apparently give your facial muscles a workout. According to Vogue, face yoga helps build stronger facial muscles which in turn helps with facial elasticity, draining excess fluid from your face, reducing puffiness, and tired lines from creeping in. Who doesn’t want to feel like they’ve been to a masseuse the moment they roll out of bed in the morning or just before going to sleep? Taking the time to stretch your

face may help your skin appear firmer and more supple, as well as give a mental boost via creating a regular mindfulness practice – especially when combined with applying your favourite serum or moisturiser. You can even try a tool like a gua sha or roller to aid your face yoga and massage. If you’re interested to try face yoga, check out @faceyoga_monna on Instagram, the Face Toned app, or search the #faceyoga hashtag on Instagram, Facebook or even TikTok.

Does concussion stop the brain cleansing? A clean brain that is well fed and nourished is a healthy brain that fights off dementia and other cognitive disorders.

C

oncussions occur as the result of a traumatic blow to the head. This causes the brain and supporting membranes to bounce, twist and get damaged inside the skull. Developments in the longerterm effects of concussion have featured in the news recently, as new brain research illustrates just how long-term and wide-ranging effects can be. After one of the largest ever investigations into the link between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cognitive decline in later life, Danish and US researchers concluded that the younger a person was when sustaining a head injury, the higher the risk of developing a form of dementia. The study looked at the health records of 2.8 million people over 36 years and found that individuals who sustained a TBI in their 20s were 63 percent more likely to develop dementia

in the next three decades than someone who did not sustain one. Gill Redden, of Gill Redden Cranio, specialises in actually treating concussion symptoms rather than monitoring and forming plans, effectively treating patients sometimes months or years after the initial injury. “It is better, however, if people seek treatment immediately after their head or tailbone trauma, certainly not waiting 6 weeks to see if they ‘come right.’” says Gill, “Some of their cranial bones will definitely be jammed up!” Using CranioSacral therapy, Gill provides a post-concussion treatment programme that helps nurture the bones, membranes, organs, tissue, nerves and blood vessels back to free movement, helping enable people to be pain and dysfunction-free. Spinal fluid can’t move freely if bones

and membranes are jammed up. This fluid feeds and also detoxifies the brain. It is critical that the spinal fluid is flowing and CranioSacral therapy supports to ensure it is. Gill also works directly with the brain scars that form when a trauma occurs. Some troublesome symptoms are not actually concussion, and can be relatively simple to treat through freeing jammed or twisted bones and membranes

which in turn enables the brain to heal more easily. Gills comprehensive concussion-focused website allows people to gain a better understanding of concussion and its consequences, provides a concise description of what CranioSacral therapy is and is validated by testimonials of clients sharing their experiences of recovery and a pain and drug-free life.

since 1964 – just four years after the very first laser was invented. Jenny says the Glow and Go facial works by the laser focusing energy under the surface of the skin all over the face and neck. “This doesn’t burn the skin – the body’s reaction to the energy is to produce more collagen and elastin and this gives you fresher tighter skin,” she says. “The treatment is a pleasant one, the sensation is like prickly heat, the same feeling as the sun on your skin. You can go back to work straight away – your skin glows, hence the name Glow and Go.” Transform Clinic offers a wide range of appearance medicine and laser treatments, from cosmetic injectables to laser skin and hair removal treatments, medical procedures including varicose vein treatments and skin cancer checks, and beauty treatments. We have said from the very beginning that every person who walks through our doors should feel comfortable and completely welcome, no matter what age or fitness ability. Down-to-earth mums and qualified instructors, Lyndal Woodham and Katrina Buchanan, are proud co-owners of On Pointe, a boutique fitness studio that focuses on your health and wellbeing and specialises in Bootybarre , Pilates and yoga. Metropol sat down with the girls to hear more about the barre and wellness studio.

NOW SCREENING:

New dedicated aneurysm ultrasound At the new offices at 256 Papanui Road, Consultant Specialist Vascular Surgeon Peter Laws and the team at Christchurch Vascular Group (CVG) are now offering a dedicated vascular ultrasound service.

neurysm screening is just one of the many services available. Metropol asked Peter, “What is an aneurysm?” He says: “Simply put, an aneurysm is a dilated blood vessel. However, if it remains undetected as it dilates, there is an increased risk of rupture. Such a rupture, if it happens in the community, can often prove fatal.” Thankfully, the risk of rupture is low for small aneurysms but the prevalence in the community is relatively high and increases with age, ranging from 5 to 22 percent as age increases. This is particularly true for the male population. Currently in New Zealand - unlike the UK, America and Sweden - there is no available national screening programme which means there is no way to exclude an aneurysm, unless it is identified incidentally. The easy alternative provided at CVG is a simple, non-invasive, inexpensive test that can be performed in minutes. With health on everyone’s mind, now is a good time to get yours in check. Speak to your GP to obtain a referral or simply call CVG on (03) 365 4502 to make an appointment. CVG is currently accepting patients over the age of 65 for consideration, or younger if there is a family history of aneurysmal disease. www.veinsnz.com

Health and wellbeing that lasts Wondering how to achieve health and wellbeing that lasts? Want to do this naturally, without processed foods, meal replacements or fad diets? Taste Success at Unichem Cashel Pharmacy is a holistic approach to health and wellbeing that celebrates simple, fresh and easy meals which taste delicious! Head Pharmacist Annabel Turley.

Y

ou won’t find processed foods, meal replacements, calorie counting or fad diets as part of Taste Success, says Head Pharmacist Annabel Turley. “Your diet plays a massive part in your health and wellbeing,” she says. “Taste Success provides a realistic, nonjudgemental approach. “We meet you where you’re at and encourage you to practice loving kindness toward yourself as you gently change your eating habits.” Designed by an experienced naturopath, Tracey Loughran, there are three programmes under Taste Success – Foundation, Skin and Refresh. Each programme includes support from a holistic nutritionist as well as one-on-one support from the pharmacy’s passionate and caring team.

The 12-week Foundation programme gives you a solid, easy-to-follow plan to get your eating right on track for a “healthier, more energised you”, says Annabel. It includes recipes that are tasty, easy to prepare, family-friendly and varied; meal plans that do the thinking for you and make meal preparation a breeze like lunches that are left over from the night before – and all of which are nutritionally balanced to prevent cravings which can drive unhealthy food habits. The specialised six-week Skin programme has been developed to naturally improve skin health through nutrition. “The recipes not only taste delicious, but also contain nutrients that are

aimed at supporting healthy skin,” says Annabel. “Whether you have eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, dryness, itchy skin or other conditions, this programme nourishes your skin from the inside out. It is based on easy recipes made from clean wholefoods, so it not only works on your skin health, but your whole wellbeing.” The Refresh was developed due to popular demand as a further twelve weeks of delicious meals and weekly menus. “A slight step up from the Foundation programme, Taste Success Refresh includes more high quality, nutrientdense foods to keep you moving in the right direction for optimising your health and wellbeing.”

Heroic herbs WORDS MORGAN TAIT

Fragrant and flavourful, herbs are a secret weapon in any cook’s culinary arsenal. If you’re tempted to pass on these aromatic, tasty stalks because they require some TLC to grow, or can seem superfluous to requirements when browsing the supermarket shelves, we urge you to reconsider. Here are Metropol’s tips for adding these pint-sized powerhouses to your next meal.

MINT

BASIL

Bring any salad to life with some mint leaves, or add a refreshing zing to dressings, drinks and sauces. Add to a pitcher of water with a quill of cinnamon and lemon slice for instant refreshment.

The defining feature of pesto and many a pasta, most are familiar with Italian basil. But what about purple basil, which is a fragrant and colourful addition to salads?

ROSEMARY

THYME

Aromatic and warming, rosemary is a superstar of roast anything. Add to a tray of roast vege, leg of lamb or the stuffing of your chicken or turkey. Or, pop a sprig in your G&T.

Thyme straddles the sweet-savoury divide like a champ; making sauces on both sides of the flavour profiles that much punchier. Try it in a cream and wine sauce, or in a sugary orange syrup.

Tastes so good you don’t need sauce!

4/1004 Ferry Road, Ferrymead. Ph 03 384 2226

1 tsp olive or canola oil, for greasing 200g feta, cut into roughly 1.5cm cubes 200g frozen peas, thawed 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced 6 large eggs 200g full-fat crème fraîche 1 heaped tbsp finely chopped fresh mint

Method 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C and lightly oil a shallow round 20cm ceramic pie or quiche dish. It should be around 4cm deep.

2

Arrange the cubes of feta and the peas in the dish and sprinkle over the spring onions.

3

Beat the eggs and crème fraîche together in a bowl, then stir in the mint and season well with ground black pepper. (You probably won’t need salt as the cheese is salty already.)

4

Pour the egg mixture over the feta and peas and bake for about 35 to 40 minutes, or until just set. (Test by inserting the tip of a knife into the centre – there should be no liquid remaining.)

5

Leave the quiche to cool for a few minutes before cutting into wedges to serve.

All fired up A century-old Lyttelton fishing boat is the centrepiece bar for a pizza joint that’s authentic to the core. Arbour Woodfired Pizza and Bar is rustic simplicity and intense perfection in the same bite.

M

egan Hancox-Hammer and arbourist husband, Ra, dreamed of woodfired pizza set amongst native timbers, using local produce in Italian-esque tradition. It’s now a community hangout with a menu conjured by two seasoned pizza maestros, who are given free reign. Originally a pop-up pizza

truck, it now permanently fills a gap in Lyttelton. Megan and Ra’s brother Mario run the business under its transparent roof, with indoor plants, a picturesque courtyard, and timber fit-out by Troy of Aridium Design. Since December’s opening, diners from both sides of the tunnel have experienced pizza as

they’ve unlikely tasted before. The New-Zealand-made wood-fired oven is fired by logs from Ra’s arborist business, The Tree People. Sustainability is imperative, and the business even recycles used oil for Ra’s chainsaws. As a lockdown project, he began raising pigs for the tasty pancetta, and curing

their own meat. Megan eats plant based and shares her passion delectably in the menu choices. Supporting locals from farmers market produce to wines from across the harbour, many surprising stories lie behind the details, from a family who keep enhancing their epicurean adventure. www.arbourbar.co.nz

Highway haven When Kevin and Gaye Monson decided to retire from their long years of running a take-away and grocery store in Mayfield, their daughter, Deborah McCormick, bought the business and immediately got to work on updating it, beginning with a name change to Café Mayfield.

n those three years since the purchase, Deborah has worked very hard to update the business by providing a relaxing setting for people to rest up, relax and dine in comfort. Open seven days, the dining-in menu features everything from full breakfast, waffles, eggs benedict, and fish basket to toasted sandwiches, paninis and bagels. Here is where gourmet coffee is created exactly as you like it, and to go with that meal, a scrumptious slice, biscuit or cake, baked fresh and onsite by the super-talented team. Take-aways of fish and chips, burgers, pies and savouries are perfect for commuters on-the-run, and to burn off all that pent-up energy, the kids can take an ice-cream out to the fenced playground

and lick away to their heart’s content before clambering over the junglegym. Life’s sweetest pleasures are all found here at Café Mayfield – the gem of Highway 72. Visit Café Mayfield at 1992 Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road, Mayfield or phone ahead on (03) 303 6210 www.facebook.com/cafemayfield

All you can eat waffles!

Treat yourself!

O

This new dessert dynasty on New Regent Street stands by an important motto: “Go ahead, treat yourself”. And the Waffle Haus is quickly building a reputation for delivering on that brief, with a mouthwatering menu of waffles, gourmet shakes, ice creams, coffee and tea.

ne of the newest additions to the ever popular, colour-happy street, the Waffle Haus owner Jamie Stewart says the store brings even more flavour to the “coolest street in New Zealand.” “Our service philosophy is to make people happy and give them a great experience in our store,” he says. “We always love the reactions of often wide eyes and gasps when we serve the waffles to them.” As well as excellent hospitality, the increasing popularity is likely down to the lip-smacking food and beverage offerings (including 30 gourmet shake flavours) – and a loyalty card which promises your sixth waffle for free.

Try the Death by Chocolate, waffles with Whittaker’s chocolate pods, chocolate sauce and chocolate flakes. Or, the Berrylicious, which features strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and berry sauce. Even better yet, embrace your inner Augustus Gloop and treat yourself to the all you can eat waffles and coffee. But be prepared for some gluttonous competition: The record currently stands at 13 waffles. With seating for up to 40, upstairs or outside, the Waffle Haus can be a tasty destination of choice whatever the weather and time of day. Open from 9am daily. www.wafflehaus.co.nz

On trend WORDS MORGAN TAIT

The fast-moving field of interior design is always awash with new ideas and inspiration to pluck from for your own homely spaces. And for all the irregularities of recent times – this fact remains unchanged, so Metropol has scoured the mood boards of the world’s most style-minded to discover what’s trending in interior design for 2021.

BIOPHILIA FANATICS

VIBRANT VASES

MID-CENTURY MODERN

A collective obsession with houseplants looks set to keep skyrocketing as fans of biophilic design continue to embrace bringing the natural environment indoors. Being in nature is scientifically-proven to boost our mental health, and when combined with the visual appeal of greenery and flowers – it’s an interior win-win.

If you’ve noticed architectural and artistic vases around the place, it’s probably because these furnishings are among the most covetable furnishings of modern aesthetics. Not just perfect for holding fresh and dried (also trending) blooms, these receptacles are sculptural artworks on their own.

A hit on the home circuit last year, appeal is not waning for furniture that makes you feel as if you should be in a bungalow overlooking the Hollywood Hills. Argued by some as timeless, there is little doubt these low slung lines, natural woods and retro vibes are everywhere right now. And don’t pair too badly with a houseplant (or seven) either.

Rain or shine, you and your kids or grandkids will never get tired of looking at cheerful room adornments. And you, too, can create your own accessories to dress your child’s room with your favourite colours.

Make your own mobile A popular nursery accessory of the 1950s, we think it’s high time for mobiles to make a comeback. Start by cutting a classic scalloped cloud and a dozen or so raindrop shapes out of your sheet of plywood. Then, using a drill, make holes in the tops of each of your raindrops, the top of your cloud and a line of holes across the bottom of your cloud – this uses five holes along the bottom. Paint your cloud and raindrops using Resene testpots

in your favourite colours – used here is Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream for the cloud and Resene Vintage, Resene Just Right, Resene Quarter Frozen, Resene Thor, Resene Safehaven, Resene Laser and Resene Sandal for the raindrops. You can even paint patterns onto some of your raindrops, if you wish. These raindrops use stripes and ticks. Using sparkly silver string – though twine, thread, wool or ribbon will do the trick, too – thread through the holes of your raindrops, knotting them on at even intervals before knotting the end to one of the holes in the bottom of the cloud. Then, thread a long length of string through the top hole in your cloud, knotting it securely. Hang your mobile from your ceiling using the appropriate hardware and high enough that it will be safely out of reach of little hands.

Reinventing spaces In the world of business, it’s an irrefutable fact that longevity is everything. Longevity knows what it’s doing; longevity earns trust and confidence. Douglas Furniture have a proud and long history here in Christchurch – nearly 65 years in fact.

F

or a little under seven decades, this business has been producing commercial joinery, and more recently has expanded into domestic design and joinery. The timing couldn’t be better, for Cantabrians are now recognising there’s much potential to be mined from their living spaces and are making the most of the heat in the property market to transform their homes into their castles.

Dated kitchens, unworkable wardrobes and laundries, and cramped or non-existent storage areas are being revisited and recreated into fresh, modern and exciting spaces. Douglas Furniture recognises that home improvements aren’t just about the house. The garage, too long relegated as mere shelter for the car, the kids’ bikes and a few tools, also gets reconfigured to become the

ultimate utility area with the kind of storage space you’ve spent half your life dreaming of. There’s no better way to kickstart 2021 than by making your home into the functional, blissful space you always knew it could be. Douglas Furniture can’t wait to help you achieve that. estoring high calibre furniture made of beautiful woods, by revered designers and which can save owners thousands instead of buying new is what Mike Fullen has been doing for more than 30 years. “It’s all about craftmanship,” he says. “We can bring something back to life and restore it to its original quality, or alter it to suit your modern needs.” Recent examples include a buffet sideboard resized and its exquisite walnut brought back to life; as well as an antique dining table and six chairs – the restoration saving the owners $10,000 on what

it would cost to buy the same set new. He began returning furniture to its original glory – or reinventing it – at the business in 1987, and bought it himself in 1991. The refurbishment gurus moved from an original Addington site to St Asaph Street last year, where it now resides next to McDonald & Hartshorne expert upholsterers. Together, the businesses can turn weathered furniture into modern masterpieces. Visit Seaton’s at 430 St Asaph Street, or phone 027 558 1477 to discuss your furniture repair requirements.

Ferm Living Ripple Glass

It’s our best heat pump … ever!

Cheers to that! WORDS MORGAN TAIT

As interior styles evolve beyond the Scandi-simplicity which dominated for the last decade, there is a resurgence of vintage-inspired decor, and Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics. These trends extend into the kitchen cupboards, where glassware is getting a nostalgic revamp and ceramic mugs look straight from a kiln in Okayama. Here are Metropol’s picks of inspiring drinkware to quench your thirst for impeccable homeware.

MIND THE HEIGHT Short lawns are popular for an appealing, manicured appearance. But, the shorter your grass the more susceptible those green stalks become to disease and pests, as well as to dryness and dead patches. Instead, consider letting things go a little (to between 5 and 7cm) and only trimming by a third. This should leave you with a soft, carpet-like look – perfect those late summer picnics and games of BYC.

SHARPEN UP Your hairdresser sharpens their scissors regularly for a reason: Blunt blades make messy cuts. When it is grass being cut, a blunt cut can also open up the chance for disease to set in. For push mowers, you can purchase drill attachments which sharpen blades (so you don’t have to remove them from the mower). Have a ride on? Talk to your dealer or refer to the manual for sharpening instructions.

Lawn in order A luscious lawn is the pride of many gardeners; an ongoing challenge of which the results signify habitual care, attention, and expertise. If you’re a green thumb who thrives off having a thriving lawn, Metropol has compiled some lesser-known tips to help you on your quest.

ALL CLIPPED UP Freshly mowed grass not only smells delicious, but is entirely reusable. Before you chuck it in your green bin, why not consider…nothing? Leaving grass clipping where they land as mulch feeds the lawn and helps retain moisture. Or, pop it in the compost (turning often) and use it as mulch for other plants.

Designing wellbeing WORDS MORGAN TAIT

Creating homes which are sanctuaries from the uncertainties of current life is top of mind for many, and the driving force behind a movement named, “wellbeing design”. Which is, as the name suggests, curating spaces to promote wellbeing. Metropol looks at ways you can incorporate some well-designed wellbeing in your own spaces. TACTICALLY TACTILE

LIGHT IT UP

WORK VS HOME

NATURAL HABITATS

Home habitats should be a full sensory experience. And while attention has long focused on colour and shape (sight), delicious aromatic candles and diffusers (scent) with atmospheric music playing (sound) – incorporating touch into lived spaces is trending. Textured wall papers, plush upholstery and raw woods are being celebrated for invoking the comfort of touch.

Make the most of the healing powers of vitamin D by boosting the natural light in your home, especially ahead of winter. If you have a remodel or new build on the cards, consider installing additional windows or a skylight to maximise those healthboosting rays. Or, if such a dramatic change is not on the horizon, use a clever mirror system to reflect the natural light and make the sunlight, quite literally, go further.

The non-negotiable working from home enforced by lockdown resulted in many employers more than happy for staff to continue working away from the office. With less distractions, many are seeing a rise in productivity and wellbeing. However, it’s important to ensure work and home zones are kept separate – if you can’t close a door to keep the home office hidden, use plants and furniture to zone it off.

We touch on biophilic design on page 49 as an interior trend to watch in 2021. This act of incorporating elements of the outdoors, in, is so popular in part because of the positive effect nature has on our wellbeing. Plants help calm and relax us, as well as reduce anxiety and increase focus – so incorporating stunning greenery into interior design is a wellbeing no-brainer.

Metropol 18 February, 2021 57

SPICE IT UP Herbs don’t just give any recipe an edge – they can give your garden beds one, too. Lavender looks lovely lining any garden or path, and onions, garlic and chives can be planted as edging to protect other edibles from hungry birds and animals.

FRUTTI TUTTI Fruit trees look stunning in every landscape. Supposedly nothing tastes better than the fruits of your labour, but just make sure you monitor excess fruit to keep hungry rodents and possums at bay. We especially love the look of an immaculately groomed citrus tree – and not just for the G&Ts.

ZEALOUS TRELLIS If you’re using trellis to adorn a wall or to create a pergola or space divider, add interest and function with tasty additions. Runner beans and nasturtiums both have eye-catching blooms and enjoy a climb. The leaves of beans are also more attractive to pests than the veges – win, win!

Edible landscaping

FLOWER POWER

WORDS ELLA SOMERS

Take your landscaping a step further by giving it an edible twist. A boost for your palate as well as Mother Nature’s, this flavourful endeavour will brighten up any space. Here are Metropol’s tips to incorporate edible plants into shaping your outdoor spaces.

Pansies and calendulas make beautiful touches to your landscape and can be added to your cooking in the way of salads and baked goods. Plant in garden beds, pots of hanging baskets – and then pluck away to garnish your meals.

Cirebon is situated about 250km east of Jakarta, Indonesia and has become a bit of a superstar in the world of outdoor furniture. Establishing itself as the rattan trade centre and manufacturer over time, it is here that WovenVeranda products begin their lifecycle before ending up on the shores of little old New Zealand.

A

ll products are expertly completed by hand. The range can be used for both indoor and outdoor settings, and features natural fibres like rattan wicker alongside reputable and sought-after synthetic options, too. The polycarbon strands are woven upon commercial grade aluminium framing and manufactured specifically to cope with New Zealand’s harsh and varied weather conditions, from high UV rays to extreme cold. Topped with

sumptuous cushions that are, quite literally, made for lounging. Sales Administrator Lisa LloydThwaites says many customers return to WovenVeranda to add to their collections, or refer family and friends. “It is the highest compliment to our products and service when we have returning customers, or they refer their friends and family,” she says. WovenVeranda also wanted to take the time to thank customers that

have been loyal and patient during the uncertain times that the last year brought with it. Coastal cool Rising out of the farmland and up from the idyllic beach, this sophisticated holiday home overlooking Waipu Cove, north of Auckland was masterminded by Jessop Architects and incorporates the warmth and uniqueness of natural timber throughout.

A

rchitect Darren Jessop says the project arose after he and his team renovated the owner’s Auckland villa. The resulting modern coastal holiday home on the generous elevated site fulfils the brief for a simple, low-maintenance getaway which capitalises on sweeping views and maximises indoor-outdoor

entertaining areas. The L-shaped form of the house points east out to the Hen and Chicken Islands along the bedroom wing, and north up the coast to Marsden Point and Whangarei Heads along the living wing. Extensive 3.2m joinery can be opened or closed to cater

for wind direction, without compromising on panoramic views. The team delivered a dream holiday home in a restrained material palette of concrete, cedar and aluminium: both unpretentious and durable against the marine environment. The stunning home separates living and sleeping to take advantage of the sweeping coastal views, and free-flowing outdoor entertainment spaces are protected from onshore and prevailing winds. Multiple options for opening and closing the indoor spaces, together with a covered outdoor room, complete with kitchen and fireplace off the north side of the living wing, create possibilities for all weather conditions. Inside, the home reflects the

simplicity of the exterior, with materials enhancing the indooroutdoor flow. Cedar sarking on the ceilings carries through uninterrupted to the soffits, and is matched with wide-planked oak on the floors. The Western Red Cedar interior sarking and exterior soffits were sourced and machined by JSC Timber. “We were lucky enough to be involved, and for us it’s wonderful to deliver high quality products and see it used like this,” says JSC Timber’s Johnny Dobbyn. “The chosen species of timbers used will help ensure longevity or sustainability and look of the build with minimal maintenance.” Likewise, the ethically sourced Iroko hardwood decking is nonleeching and stable, making it ideal for withstanding the seaside environment, says Johnny.

he undulating façade and building form reference movement and transition from the motorway into the airport precinct, thereby creating a strong complementary structure to the Gateway overbridge. For first-time visitors to our city, the FMG building could be described as an “architectural appetiser”, an introduction to what lies beyond Memorial Avenue - the

The FMG office building sits adjacent to the Memorial Gateway Bridge and is prominently situated at the entrance to Christchurch Airport. new, bold and daring architecture that is rapidly becoming the signature of Ōtautahi Christchurch. The designer behind the FMG building is Matt Gutsell, Associate Director of Sheppard and Rout Architects. Matt’s interest in the use of natural materials and the tectonics of detailing modern buildings while incorporating passive environmental design is very much

in evidence on the building. The FMG office building comprises 1700sqm of high-quality office space, with on-site car parks, and a bike park and green space that’s shared with tenants from adjacent buildings, including ANZCO and PGG Wrightson. It’s a well-known fact that some of the greatest and most beautiful cars ever produced hail from Italy. Brands like Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat, Lamborghini and Iso are synonymous with the Italian’s penchant for art, 11/02/2021 3:18:46 PM design, engineering, and above all passion.

n February 20, fans of Italian cars will descend on Christchurch’s Art Centre Carpark off Worcester Boulevard for the biennial Belle Italiane Italian Car Festival. Hosted by the Canterbury Fiat and Lancia Club, Belle Italiane has always been a must-see event for those with a deep love for Italian cars. “The original idea came as a result of club members envisaging Italian cars and their owners getting together for an informal picnic in a relaxed environment,” says club president John Hayman. “The plan was to get cars that we never really see out of garages and on display,” he says. Lovers of Latin machinery would not want to miss this.

The combination of petrol and electric power working in harmony resulted in a car which was livelier, and more fun to drive.

he new IS consists of seven different variants. The base IS300 and IS300h, moving to the higher spec IS300 and IS300H Limited, and on to the performance-charged IS00, IS300h and IS350F Sport. Prices start at $70,900 for the entry level IS300 and finish with the IS350F Sport at $101,800. In typical Lexus fashion, petrol and hybrid powertrains return, with the IS300 getting a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to an eight-speed automatic box with 180kW/350Nm. The IS300 Hybrid gets a 2.5L four cylinder with 164kW and combined torque figures of 521Nm. Fuel figures? Try 5.1L/100km. The IS350F Sport naturally gets the most grunt, with a 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 with 232kW and 380Nm. Looks wise, the new IS Sports has an entirely new spindle grill, redesigned head and taillight cluster, and a more swooping coupe-like roofline. For what is essentially a heavy facelift, the new IS certainly looks good, especially with the blacked-out accents and 19-inch BBS matt black alloys of the F-Sport. Inside, you get a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The leather seats are just as sublime, and all the switchgear feels so well put together.

Leaving Lexus New Zealand HQ in Palmerston North, we made our way to Taupo for our overnight stop at The Hilton. First was the IS300 Limited Petrol, which performed well, but you did need to give it stick to make some brisk progress. Steering was well weighted, and it felt very planted on the move. Also, the 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system gets a big thumbs up. Next up was the IS300 Hybrid. This is a much more engaging drive. The combination of petrol and electric power working in harmony resulted in a car which was livelier, and more fun to drive. Leaving Taupo the next day, it was time for the IS350F Sport. However, the IS300H feels just as sporty on twisty roads heading for the Waikato. But, despite the larger alloys, improvements in ride comfort over the previous generation F-Sport was a nice surprise. We then made our way to Hampton Downs Raceway, which this writer enjoyed at the wheel of the sublime LC500 Convertible. What amazed me the most is the new IS can still thrill on track, then again, the new IS was the first Lexus to be developed on their new, Nurburgring inspired, Shimoyama Test Track. Based on this taster, the IS300H just edges ahead of the F-Sport as being my top pick of the range. I’m looking forward to putting the new Lexus IS through its paces on Canterbury roads over the coming months.

including V6 and V8 petrol, four-cylinder hybrid and V6 diesel powerplants, with rear-wheel and four-wheel drive, there’s pretty much something for everyone. Then there is the MC20, named China Performance Car of the Year

2021. The highly anticipated awards were officially announced recently in Guangzhou. Closely followed by both industry insiders and consumers, the awards aim to promote the continuous improvement of China’s automotive industry and market. A jury comprised of 41 authoritative judges from the automotive media measure each vehicle against overall and market performance, as well as other key factors. The MC20 is a very sexy beast though and, like you, I would love to get behind the wheel to get the full experience. Developed by the Maserati Innovation Lab and produced at the historic plant in Modena, MC20 is 100 percent made in Italy. Its superb looks conceal an uncompromisingly sporty soul, with the new 630 horsepower V6 Nettuno engine that delivers 0 to 100km/h acceleration in under 2.9 seconds. Let’s say that again, 2.9 seconds! With a top speed over 325km/h, that’s Christchurch to Ashburton in 16 minutes. “Sorry officer, was I speeding?” The patented engine has been developed, designed, and built entirely in-house. With the new super sports car MC20, the trident brand officially started a new era. The more I look at the images, the more I think I have a Maserati sporty soul.

comfy ute Marvellous,

WORDS BEN SELBY

Mazda’s new BT50 is finally here. Available in 2WD and 4WD, the range starts with the double cab GSX and ends with my test car, the flagship 4WD double cab limited.

A

t $47,490 and $60,990, respectively, the price is up there yes, but this is somewhat justified when you step inside. The minimalist cues of Mazda’s Kododesign philosophy is riddled throughout the cabin. Switchgear feels solid, and the level of tech on-board is very generous. The infotainment system is first rate and the leather seats are some of the most comfortable I have experienced in any ute.

All models come with a 3L turbodiesel four-cylinder engine with 140kW and 450Nm of torque mated to a six-speed auto box. While it does require a firm boot to get going, it settles down to a quiet hum while on the move. The steering is almost perfect, allowing you to coax it freely into each corner. The BT50 doesn’t try to blind you with off road gizmos, but its simple 2H, 4H and 4L drive modes do their job well. However,

I would be somewhat wary of taking that svelte nose through a muddy riverbed every weekend. The new Mazda BT50 is unlikely to appeal to the blood, toil and sweat of the farmyard or worksite. Its unparalleled levels of comfort, refinement, and handsome lines will most likely appeal to someone wanting something which will tow and occasionally rough it if need be. Either way, the BT50 is still a marvellous ute.

Mega motorcycles, mega service

D

For Dennis Charlett, motorcycles are a way of life, whether on a Saturday ride, or competing in the New Zealand Superbike Championship, of which he has multiple national titles under his belt.

ennis knows the bike industry inside and out, which led to him purchasing Budget Motorcycles Spares Ltd, and transforming it into Mega Motorcycles Centre. “I have been in the industry for a number of years, but I have always wanted to own my own motorcycle business,” he says. “The opportunity came to buy Budget Motorcycle Spares, from there it evolved into Mega Motorcycle Centre.” What started as a shop specialising in tyres, parts and riding accessories, is now a fully fledged motorcycle one stop shop.

“We still retain all the services of Budget Motorcycle Spares, like tyres, parts, helmets, riding gear and accessories. However, we are now a one stop shop with tuning, dyno testing, and other mechanical work.” Dennis’ competitive nature on the track is also evident when it comes to giving his loyal customers the best experience and service possible, regardless of what they ride. “My team and I always ensure our customers leave with what they want. It doesn’t matter what they are into, Harleys or Japanese Sports Bikes, we welcome any brand or style.”

The perfect fit WORDS NICHOLAS HENARE

The name Kamiq originates from the language of the Inuit people, native to Northern Canada and Greenland. It means, “something that fits perfectly”. And I think that says it all.

I

live a pretty busy life, which means I need a car that is easy-to-use and equipped to deal with all my requirements for passengers and cargo. When I went through the briefing of the Skoda Kamiq with the team at Miles Continental, the word “compact” kept getting used. Now, compact means small but that’s

not what the Kamiq felt like at all. Comfortable and easy to drive, Skoda really do nail simplicity with style and at a very competitive price. There are three variations in the range, starting with the Ambition at $30,990 with 85kW up to the Monte Carlo, at $42,990 with 110kW, which is what I got to play with. It is a turbo petrol and

has 250Nm of torque and a five-star safety rating - which is always a good thing. My love started with my 2018 car of the year being the Superb, so adding another good car to the Skoda range makes sense. What’s left to say if you’re hunting for a fun, compact SUV? This fits perfectly.
