From the Editor
EDITOR MORGAN TAIT
Each fortnight at Metropol we’re privileged to showcase the new and noteworthy. On our pages, across cuisine, fashion, home, beauty, health, hospitality, architecture, motoring, events and travel we aim to bring a definitive collection of what’s worth knowing about in Canterbury and the South Island. And in this issue, we start as we mean to go on: With a stunning front cover relating to an exciting addition to the city. It is a shot from one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded designer’s latest collections, because that designer, Juliette Hogan, has just opened her first South Island store at The Crossing. She speaks with our assistant editor, Jess Murray, about why she chose Christchurch (during a global pandemic), and the importance of supporting local. Further into the magazine, we cover an innovative new sport gaining traction globally and running in the red zone – drone racing. Then, in our Cuisine section, we showcase an old favourite making a new return. Viaduct was a fixture on Oxford Terrace’s The Strip and its delicious multi-dimensional menu, large sunny balcony and exhilarating nightlife is now reimagined on The Terrace. These physical additions are not the only newcomers to the city, though. Because as Mayor Lianne Dalziel outlines in her monthly column on page 66 – we’re attracting some new residents, too. The appeal of Christchurch has long been known to those of us lucky enough to call it home, so there is little surprise it’s catching on, really.

Nathan van Slooten. Like any sport it takes skill and practice to finesse, requires specialist equipment, and rivals compete for titles and glory. “They’re pretty quick – they have a top speed of 160kmh when going in a straight line and you’re still pushing 100km/h around corners,” says Nathan. “Crashes are a part of it – if you’re not crashing, you’re not pushing yourself hard enough. Of course you’re not intending to crash but you’re always pushing to go faster and faster. It’s a good thing that most of us build our own because that makes it easier to sort them out.” The Christchurch club formed in 2016 – about a year after drone racing emerged as a sport globally – and it’s growing in popularity as technology improves and drones become more affordable. “The drones we use are different to usual ones – they’re built for speed and for flying around courses. This means that most of the drones used in our club are built by the people flying them.” Those without their own

racing drone can even use the club’s drone racing simulator to get a near-real experience. “The simulator is pretty much like the real thing and is a great way to see if you like it,” says Nathan. Club members meet regularly at the site to practice and every few months an event is held to encourage more people to try the sport. The club’s twilight racing season is just finishing up for the summer, and in November night flying - where LED lights were attached to the gates – was trialled. “Night flying hadn’t been done in New Zealand before and overall it was a great success,” says Nathan. East x East is a collaboration between LINZ and Life in Vacant Spaces, located on nine hectares of red zone land. As landowner of this Crownowned red zone land, LINZ considers short-term leases and licences to use the area for up to six months and since 2016 has facilitated more than 2800 transitional land uses, including about 150 short-term projects and events.

Strait for Christchurch WORDS JESS MURRAY
Her eponymous brand is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable fashion labels, and has long been inspired by the landscapes of the south. Now Juliette Hogan has put down roots here with a new store The Crossing. Metropol catches up with the designer about bridging the Cook Strait, where her love story with our city started, and navigating an industry in flux.
What made you choose Christchurch to open up your first store in the South Island? “The Juliette Hogan brand has always had a strong affinity to the textures and palette of the South Island landscape, and it has been a longstanding dream location for a store. The more we travelled looking for the right location, the more perfect Christchurch felt. I have to admit, it’s my favourite store so far. I absolutely love the curved oak wall, to me it feels so welcoming and protective, and hope this is how our customers respond to it as well.”

You’re a business owner and a mum – which must be busy enough without lockdowns thrown in the mix! What’s your philosophy or approach to making sure you have the time, space and energy you need and want to balance your business and family lives? “My life is what I have made it and I feel so fortunate that I get to do what I love. For me that means being challenged and busy as a mother, partner, and business owner. I do work hard to keep a balance making time for family, work, and myself. I walk every morning; podcasts keep me learning and motivated and good books and travel give me both escape and creative inspiration.”
I have to admit, it’s my favourite store so far. I absolutely love the curved oak wall... JULIETTE HOGAN
The pandemic has fuelled the movement to support local. You manufacture almost all your garments locally, why is it important for you to be New Zealand made, and why should Kiwis get behind this? “At Juliette Hogan, our clothes are predominantly NZ made (97 percent). I’m proud to be part of Mindful Fashion NZ. Cofounded by Emily Miller-Sharma of Ruby and Kate Sylvester in 2018. We are working together on a number of initiatives to help create a thriving and sustainable future for Made in NZ clothing including developing a meaningful garment manufacturing apprenticeship programme to fulfil skill shortages and create more jobs within our clothing industry.” Can you please tell us how the last 12 months has impacted the Juliette Hogan brand, and how this is reflected in your latest designs? “2020 certainly presented us with some extraordinary challenges, but the surprising outcome for me has been the genuinely rewarding learning and growth opportunities that the year has provided. In the 17 years since I launched Juliette Hogan, I have never had such a strong impetus or the opportunity to really step back and make big decisions on where we wanted this business and brand to be, and how we were going to evolve to get there. Reflecting the timeless and enduring design aesthetic of Juliette Hogan, 2021 sees a new approach forgoing the constraints of traditional seasons and what is yet to come. In addition to reworking our seasonal calendar, we also launched our JH Lounge collection in June 2020. This collection had been in development for some time; however, the timing was really perfect to launch to market.” So, looking forward now. What does 2021 have in store for you, and the Juliette Hogan brand? “We have lots of exciting projects in the pipeline including new product lines and working closely with our wonderful brand partners Amisfield, Audi & Bobbi Brown on exciting events and experiences. We are looking forward to being more connected to the South Island with the new store to have a deeper understanding of what our South Island customers need. Personally, I’m looking forward to spending time with my family exploring our beautiful country.”

Crazy for catnip Drooling, purring, vocalising, zooming or even dozing are all signs cats can show after exposure to catnip. Ourvets Halswell Practice Manager Lauren Harvey gives Metropol the lowdown on the perennial herb, which can be a handy tool for cat owners.
C
atnip (Nepeta Cataria), a perennial herb, is known to produce euphoria for cats due to containing a chemical called
nepetalactone. Sensitivity to catnip is an inherited trait, says Lauren. “Even bigger felines like
tigers and lions can be sensitive to it. Although around one third of cats may not be affected at all by catnip. “When your cat sniffs or chews the plant (or even rolls around in it) they may show all sorts of interesting signs. Your cat may drool or purr, they may vocalise or zoom around like they’re on a mission – or all the above!” She says how your cat reacts depends on how they are exposed to the plant. “If they sniff the plant, they may become excited or go crazy. However, if they eat the plant this may have more of a sedative effect and they will likely be more peaceful and relaxed.” Catnip is relatively easy to grow outdoors or as a
houseplant, and it can also be purchased in toys, sprays, scratching posts or dried specifically for cats. “If your cat is affected by it, you can use it to help make their things that they may have otherwise ignored, like a new bed or scratching post, more interesting to them. “Luckily, catnip is not harmful or addictive to our cats. In fact, our Kitty City Hotel and Cats on Cranford catteries often use toys containing catnip or may even have a plant on occasion to give the cats some fun and entertainment while they enjoy their stay.” To book your cat’s stay in the aformentioned catteries or for more infomation on Ourvets, visit the website below. www.ourvets.co.nz

Book in to break out You are locked in a room with an hour on the clock where the only way out is through a series of codes and puzzles. Whether you’re a team leader or clock watcher, Isaac Neeley manager of Escape Artists Christchurch says everyone plays a role within the team no matter how small they think their contribution was.
D
ecember 2015 was when Dan Varcoe and his wife opened the first escape room in the city. They too were the masterminds behind the trials and tribulations of the rooms. Isaac says escapees are pushed to the limits to make their way out, with every person a crucial piece of the puzzle. “Escape rooms require a wide range of different thought processes, this allows different teams members to shine through and express their strengths and skills by solving puzzles that some other players may not.” This all-ages activity is great
for children’s parties through to corporate team building. Although, children 11 and under require an adult to assist them in solving the puzzles. “We want escapees to have a sense of accomplishment and be proud of themselves that they managed to escape our rooms. We strive on making sure all teams escape the room. Everyone is a winner here and we want them to feel like that,” says Isaac. Lock in (pun intended) your timeslot on the website below. But get in fast because getting in, (to break out) is a popular pursuit.

We are one: Remembering March 15
Two years on from the Christchurch mosque attacks, people will come together at a national remembrance service, Ko Tātou, Tātou We Are One, to remember and honour those who died and build on the spirit of unity that came out of the tragedy.
K
o Tātou, Tātou We Are One will be held at Christchurch Arena at 3pm on Saturday March 13 and jointly led by the local Muslim community, Christchurch City Council, the government and Ngāi Tūāhuriri as mana whenua. “It will be an opportunity for people to come together in unity, to show compassion, love and support for all our communities, and the value we place on being an inclusive and diverse country,” says event organisers. The programme for this year’s service has been based on what was planned for last year, which was cancelled due to Covid-19, and was put together with input from those most affected by the attacks, including survivors and families of the victims. “The service provides a chance to acknowledge the unity shown in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, New Zealand and the world in response to the tragedy, and to express appreciation for the responders and all those who helped and to stand in solidarity with the bereaved, injured and all those affected.” Students from Burnside High
It will be a good opportunity for people to come together in unity, to show compassion, love and support for all our communities, and the value we place on being an inclusive and diverse country
School and Cashmere High School will perform music at the service. The two schools were heavily impacted by the mosque attacks. Cashmere High School lost two students and a past student in the attacks, and one student from Burnside High School died. The service is free to attend, however due to limited capacity in Christchurch Arena, bookings will be required. More information on how to book will be released closer to the time at ccc.govt.nz. The service will also be live streamed for people to view worldwide. In the interests of sustainability and minimising waste, people wanting to leave tributes around the city are asked to make sure the tributes are entirely compostable, with flowers left unwrapped, and any ties or attachments able to be composted.

business of farming The oldest university in New Zealand, Lincoln, has a long connection to the country’s primary industries and is at the forefront of agricultural research and business. But not only does the institute teach the country’s future generations of farmers – it also partners with people, government and entities to offer advice, research and solutions.
L
incoln Faculty of AgriBusiness and Commerce will be attending the Wanaka A&P Show this month, connecting not only with prospective students – but with farmers and agriculture businesses. “We work with farmers and agriculture businesses to connect them to researchers,
scientists and advisors on any and all aspects of agribusiness,” says Rob Reynish, the faculty’s business development manager. He says the school is well placed with a range of experts and research opportunities to help not only solve farmingrelated problems, but to increase performance of successful operations, too.
“We can help with financial advice to providing scientific insight into new farming techniques like precision agriculture.” The faculty’s advice is so highly sought-after, its Farm Budget and Farm Technical manuals – which started life at student study aids – are now used around the world

WHAT IS YOUR UNIQUE APPROACH TO REAL ESTATE? “I care. I know that sounds really corny, but I actually take a real interest in my clients and their next step in the process. From meeting them to seeing them settled in their new home, I want the best possible outcome for them and really do go the extra mile. Once a lady needed a piece of paper signed, so I picked it up and drove it across town, got it signed, and then drove it back again.”
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND? “I come from a retail background, and also worked for nearly 20 years as an office administrator in schools. I have always been in a role in helping people in some way shape or form. I truly want the best for people, and believe in doing the best by people.”
HOW CAN YOU HELP PEOPLE BUY AND SELL THEIR HOMES IN CHRISTCHURCH?
The business of caring Karen Glassey has spent her career helping people, and it is this caring philosophy which drives her approach to real estate. The Mike Pero Real Estate agent chats with Metropol.
“I have been a residential real estate agent based in Russley and Avonhead for three years, but can help people buying and selling houses all over Canterbury. There aren’t enough houses for the number of buyers at the moment – so if you’re thinking of selling, now is definitely a great time.” Contact Karen on 027 567 8605, 0800 527 364, via karen.glassey@mikepero.com, or at the website below. www.karen-glassey.mikepero.com

Protecting your privacy A recent Apple update is being touted as big news for consumers, who can now opt out of brands using their data. It’s just the latest move by the tech giant to give users more protection for their ever valuable data, and is being labelled as “seismic” for consumers and digital media alike.
he iOS 14 update – which powers iPhones - allows users to control how they share their data, as well as who and what they share their data with. With the change, iPhone users will need to be asked by apps - like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - for permission to share their data. They will see a pop-up window in each app which needs to warn if their data is being tracked for advertising purposes, and give them the option to opt in – or out – of this practice. Such data tracking has come under fire for ethical reasons, and been linked to election interference and spreading controversial conspiracy theories and misinformation, as outlined in hit Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma. It is also the foundation of digital media models which connects advertisers to consumers based on personal data like age, location, gender, interests and other insights.
Such insights are often collected when signing up to and using an app. An article from CNBC labels the move “seismic”. “Apple is making a huge change to settings on users’ iPhones in the name of privacy, and it will fundamentally change the way apps track your data in order to create targeted ads,” says the article. An article on the same topic, on Digitalmarketer.com, says the change is “groundbreaking.” “While most people, consumers and tech giants alike, would agree that an increase and focus on personal data security is a good thing, it does have a very massive effect on one thing in particular: advertisement personalisation. “Simply put, it could be harder for advertisers to reach their target audience like they do. That means online advertising, at least to iOS devices, could become significantly less effective.”

Perms have come a long way! Hearing the word perm probably conjures up thoughts of big bubble perms (or Dolly Parton in the ’80s!) but the reality these days is far removed from this
P
erms are not just for the older generation; whether you want a looser, loppy curl or tight ringlets are more your style, perming techniques can be used to create a look that is fashion-forward and on-trend. Even Hollywood is undergoing a perm revolution, with many celebrities such as Emma Stone, Jonathan Van Ness and
Olivia Munn rocking beautiful bouncy curls! Perms can also be used on short hair to add body and volume without adding curl. Perming in 2021 is also much gentler than perms of the past – as technology has advanced, the products used for perms are kinder on the hair, and are less likely to cause damage on otherwise healthy hair. Due to the shape of the hair
shaft, curly hair is more prone to dryness, but your stylist will be able to recommend you suitable products to care for your new ‘do. The team at H&B love fashion perms, as they are a fabulous way to live your curly girl dreams. For more information or to see if a modern perm is right for you, phone (03) 381 8939.

Fancy footwear for fall It’s a sizzling summer at Rangiora Shoe Lines as customers up and down the country (yes, both South and North Islands) are snapping up sandals, shoes and sneakers in the end-of-season sale. But that’s not all that’s happening at the “best little independent shoe store in North Canterbury” - owner Rebecca Barker has had a sneak preview of the first autumn arrivals and here’s just a little insight as to what she saw…
K
nee-high boots, courtesy of Minx, in a galaxy of colours – think pink, orange, purple and winter white. Wow! Bresley brings the winning combo of neutral tones and classic design with shoes tailored to meet the work/ leisure lifestyle, in timeless shades of black, navy and the still oh-so-hot chocolate. Yum! Speaking of yum, Gelato sneakers in white, and white with pops of colour, remain firm favourites, as does the EOS sneaker, which has every wearer walking like a Greek goddess! In the nine months since Rebecca took over the business, she cannot believe the support she has received, both locally and nationwide, thanks to online shopping. “Rangiora Shoe Lines can’t thank New Zealand enough for that. It’s amazing to know how far, and how well, the business is known and appreciated. It’s wonderful!” Visit the store at 162 High Street, Rangiora between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm Saturdays and 10am to 3pm on Sundays, or check out the website below.

Facing the facts Don’t let your smile be the reason for your frown. If you’re feeling self-conscious of your teeth, maybe it’s time to make a conscious decision to improve your smile. Metropol catches up with Richard Greenlees from Lovebite to get the downlow on dentures.

Soon your feet won’t be on display in strappy sandals, but before you tuck them away, take the opportunity to give them some pampering or address any more serious issues.” Agata specialises in the cosmetic side of podiatry with her medi-pedis (medical pedicures) trimming toenails, reducing any hard areas of dry, dead callused skin, removing any corns from your feet and toes, and treating and reducing any cracks in your heels. Simply irresistible This is a true story of the enticing allure of the pickled onion. Picture The Picklery at Gordon’s as two customers enter...
I
t’s a personal crisis,” the man says as he heads to the shelves filled with product. “We’ve run out of pickled onions!” He selects a jar of onions and leaves the shop quickly, unscrewing the lid of the jar as he goes. “He’s addicted to them,” the man’s wife says. “They’re so sweet, crisp and tangy and made even more delicious with Gordon’s own special vinegar. And of course they
do contain high amounts of good probiotics and digestive enzymes.” Gordon’s Pickles actually makes two kinds of pickled onions to satisfy that craving – a traditional and a chilli and honey-flavoured variety. They also sell the raw material for people to pickle their own (the onions are already peeled), because many people have old family recipes, like this one for a Gordon’s Cheese Ball.
Gordon’s Cheese Ball 1 cup grated cheese 1 pottle cream cheese ¼ cup chopped walnuts 4 chopped Gordon’s “Outrageous” Chilli and Honey flavoured pickled onions 1 lemon, juiced Ground black pepper Mix together and form a ball. Roll in chopped parsley

he coffee industry is very competitive. Many homegrown coffee roasteries are facing increasing costs and a saturated market. Trying to compete with multinational coffee companies with a large market share, and even larger marketing budgets, can be a real challenge, says Coffee Worx Co-owner Deborah Riach. “Small local businesses are having to battle being squeezed out by these large corporates, especially in supermarkets where shelf
space becomes more difficult to secure against the ‘big boys’,” she says. There are a number of Christchurch-based roasteries that have sold to large national and multinational businesses and all the profits are now being re-directed away from Christchurch to larger cities in the North Island as well as overseas. “The Covid-19 crisis has made us realise we can look closer to home for high quality products that keep our local economy moving.

Time for an upgrade! In a year where best laid plans were thrown out the window and there was no choice but to embrace uncertainty, Red Post Café co-owners Trent and Carolyn took a bold step.
T
he pair have run the Culverden café since July 2008, and while most of us were negotiating what sweats to wear in lockdown, they were in negotiations to purchase the building the café is in - and were successful. So, what does that mean for the café’s future? “Owning the building has now freed us up to undertake
some long overdue TLC,” says Trent. “Customers should look out for internal upgrades in the form of carpet, curtains, and a paint job. Externally, there are changes to the garden and later in the year – new paint.” But luckily for Red Post regulars, business will not be interrupted during the upgrade. Neither will their commitment to maintaining high standards
of service and food offerings to customers. Keep an eye out for seasonal changes to the café’s menu like warming soups for autumn and winter, and weekly menu specials, too. Check out Red Post Café on Facebook or add the café to your next day out. Open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Thursday, and 8am to 5pm Friday to Sunday.

ACCOMMODATION WITH STYLE!
cuisine
Scrumptious dumplings WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Bite-sized flavour dynamos, dumplings are a crowdpleasing snack or meal that are fun and surprisingly simple to make at home. From Korean mandu to Japanese gyoza and Chinese-style wonton, here are some tried and true flavour combos to try - whether you like them boiled, steamed or fried.
D
umpling wrappers can be found at Asian supermarkets for – usually – much cheaper than the big brand stores, and keep well in the freezer. Whichever dumpling style you choose to make, a damp tea towel will prevent them drying out while you finish pleating the whole batch.
FERMENTED FAVOURITES Kimchi and tofu dumplings are a comforting, flavourful and plant-based mix. Stir fry 2/3C shallots, 3 cloves of garlic, 2Tbsp ginger, 1 grated carrot and 2 chopped spring onions. Cool, then add 400g crumbled tofu, 3/4C kimchi and 1tsp ground coriander.
POT STICKER WINNER
BOILIN’ BROTH
Pork and cabbage is a classic combo, and pairs deliciously with a chili and vinegar dipping sauce. For the filling, combine about 500g pork mince with 120g finely sliced Chinese cabbage, 1Tbsp ginger, 2 cloves minced garlic, 4 slices spring onions and ½ tsp miso paste.
Try your hand at delicate chicken and prawn wontons, cooked in a toothsome broth. For the filling, mix 300g minced chicken, 200g uncooked and chopped prawns with 15g chopped ginger, 4 garlic cloves, 2Tbsp soy sauce, and 2tsp sesame oil.

says many businesses are unaware of their requirements, or not receiving the right verification advice, after new laws came into effect between 2016 and 2019. “We have specialist evaluators and verifiers across the entire food industry, we’re approved by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and are really proud of our constructive and open approach to working with clients to ensure compliance.” The national team of 14 evaluators and verifiers are not only tertiary educated but have to undergo strict and regular training with MPI as well as continuous professional development. An old favourite made new One of Christchurch’s most well-known restaurant and bars is back. Viaduct was a fixture on Oxford Terrace’s The Strip. Now, its delicious multi-dimensional menu, a large sunny balcony and exhilarating nightlife is reimagined on The Terrace.
I
ts sister bar, di lusso, is also due to make a comeback as an adjacent rooftop bar when work is completed. The establishments’ returns are at the hands of former founder and hospitality maestro, Jonny Botherway, Viaduct’s mouth-wateringly well-balanced menu is at the core of its casual upmarket offering, and is designed for all palates and occasions by Botherway and head chef, Robert Kimi. Heroing seafood and smoked meats, the extensive and considered menu also includes lighter gourmet salads and sharing options. All of which can be enjoyed on the gloriously large balcony – the largest in The Terrace
complex - overlooking the Avon River, or at indoor seating with window views to the bustling laneway and riverside street below. “We’ve kept the same names, Viaduct and di lusso, as before because they were so popular for what they delivered on: Dining during the day, and nightlife after dark,” says Botherway. “In this new location, these elements are amplified: The al fresco dining is now on the largest and sunniest balcony in The Terrace complex, di lusso will be open air when it is finished, and we have come up with a menu which modernises old favourites and caters to new tastes and trends, too.”
Fine smoked meats, seafood, salads and platters. Local and international brews, specialist cocktails and a discerning wine list. Come relax and enjoy with us on our fabulous balcony overlooking the Avon River. Level 1, 134 Oxford Terrace, Chch Tel: 021 260 8956 42 04 March, 2021 Metropol

gin gin back on New Regent Street! With a nod to tradition, and the colours of today, gin gin serves not only amazing cocktails, but also a local beer and wine list. Head along to the heritage of New Regent St, sit back, relax, and enjoy the comfort of this all-new beautiful bar and kitchen. 4 New Regent St, Christchurch www.gingin.co.nz for bookings.
Oysters, Kokonda (a Pasifka-style ceviche), Hawaiian poke and seafood chowder (available as both entree and main) standout amongst seafood offerings. Smoked brisket, pulled pork and barbecue ribs are the champions of the smoked meats selection, and are served as mealsized platters with refreshing sides available to match. Viaduct’s famous Caesar Salad also makes a modernised return alongside a smoked beetroot carpaccio, and a farro and charred broccoli salad. Small and sharing plates include buckets of prawns, clams with smoked tomato bisque, smoked beetroot arancini and fish croquettes. When it comes to ordering something to drink, a rich wine list, popular tap and bottled beers sit alongside a classic cocktail menu featuring a sloe gin Negroni, New York sour and espresso martini. Botherway says the menu is designed to be served for lunch from 11.30am until 3pm and dinner from 5pm, with a separate snack menu of more charcuterie-styled platters for those in-between times. “But the action doesn’t stop when the kitchen closes,” he says. The fit out of the first-floor bar is cleverly designed to transition from daytime and early evening dining to a late-night
dancefloor – bringing back Viaduct and di lusso’s famous after-dark atmosphere. “The ambiance is a careful mix of class and location,” he says. “We’ve designed the bar and restaurant layout so dining and imbibing can naturally progress into socialising and dancing as our guests see fit.” The interiors are a sophisticated mix of natural wood and on-trend textured furnishings – from plush seating to indoor plants. Quirky artwork in frames adorns the walls, and ample windows allow for natural light and panoramic views – another unique feature of the corner site. Di lusso will have an open air feel but be protected from the elements with a roof, louvred walls and heating. The reimagined Viaduct and di lusso are the 32nd and 33rd establishments “built or bought” by Botherway, who has previously owned The Pegasus Arms, Aikman’s, Zanzibar and 205 locally, with others owned and operated around New Zealand
and Australia. He hopes the Viaduct will become a versatile destination for those seeking a laid back, high quality hospitality experience – whether that is for a long lunch, after work drinks and everything in between.

SIGN, SEALED, DELIVERED When it comes to a meal kit delivery service, options are ever-expanding. Why think, plan, and shop your weekly meals when My Food Bag, Woop or Hello Fresh could do it for you? All you need to do is paint, or cook, by numbers. It really couldn’t get easier.
BE PREPARED Meal prep is the spray and walk away of cooking. Preprepare entire meals and divide them into individual portions, or just get ingredients ready for their night of the week. There are even playlists on Spotify, such as Meal Prep Mega Mix, to help you groove through the task.
Mealtimes made easy
MAN (OR WOMAN) WITH A PLAN The downside of doorstep delivered meal kits is they can be quite pricey, especially if it’s just for one. A handy meal-planner app may be the perfect sous-chef to ensuring you are not stressing over lastminute meal ideas. Try Prepear, Mealime or BigOven.

Bright alright If you can’t experience the colours of the world at large, paint your house in them. Or so is the thinking behind an emergence of bright, vibrant colours adorning the interior décor of homes around the globe.
C
olour psychologists and interior experts alike are attributing the rise of abundant colour choices – like blushing pastels and intense natural shades of greens and blues – to people trying to bring more emotion, joy and happiness into their homes. Apparently, this gives residents of colourful abodes
the stimulation which is hard to come by as their regular, non-pandemic adventures are curtailed. Those trending natural tones are also taking a more neutral earthy turn, with warmer clays and muted mustards and smoky, stony greys also popular; providing a calming balance to more
sanguine shades. When it comes to incorporating these hot hues into your own rooms, if you’re not bold enough to paint your lounge pink or your bedroom moss green - experts suggest choosing a neutral shade with a faint undertone. A cool beige with a green undertone can still have a calming effect, and
a more muted, dusty pink still imparts comforting optimism. Likewise, kitchen cabinetry or skirting boards can be painted in a deep moody navy to invoke grandeur and contrast, or colours reinterpreted into the paint finish itself. Choosing a gloss or matte paint can achieve added texture and interest in any shade.

Subdivide & conquer The housing market is full of opportunities right now, with many people thinking about what they own and the best way to grow wealth from their existing property. Designer Homes believes that subdividing is an attractive option. It can provide you with a solid investment and it’s one way to help increase the nation’s desperately needed housing stock.
B
uilding a new dwelling on your existing property gives you the choice to sell it or to keep it and rent it out, says Designer Homes Managing Director Rajesh Thakur. “If it’s something you’ve never done before, it might seem a bit daunting. All the paperwork, all the legal stuff.” He says this is when it’s time to take a deep breath and talk to them. The business has decades of knowledge in the design and build industry and will guide you through the subdivision process. It’s a five-step process, starting off with getting your initial subdivision resource consent. This means finding out if the property can be subdivided (in some areas there are bans or limits on subdivision). Once this is confirmed you
can then apply for your resource consent. The rest of the process covers infrastructure (such as road access and drainage), the lodging of various documentation with the Registrar General of Land, LINZ, and obtaining new titles to replace the existing land title. Rajesh says the cost of subdivision can vary depending on the number of subdivisions you are planning on doing, the number of size of the subsections, which region it is in, and what infrastructure is required. “A straightforward subdivision to create one new title might cost anywhere from $50,000 to $90,000,” says Rajesh. An important consideration when thinking about subdividing is whether you’ll be required to pay tax. For most property-owners your subdivision will
not be taxable, if you didn’t have the intention of selling when you initially bought the undivided section and the sale didn’t occur within the bright line period. It’s best to be on the safe side and talk to a tax professional first, though. To top off the positives for subdividing, Rajesh says the profits can be very good: “A section of land that’s been subdivided into three, is likely to earn the owner a profit of 15 to 20 percent.” Once you’ve done your subdivision you and the Designer Homes team can then get together to design and build your brand-new home. Get in touch to talk about your project from beginning to end on (03) 222 2344, 0508 DHOMES or via engage@designerhomes.kiwi.nz. Metropol 04 March, 2021 53

Space to stash Many homes don’t have a dedicated mudroom, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need a place to stash your stuff right after you walk in the door. This simple and stylish entryway is designed to keep things tidy and takes up next to no floor space.
T
his soft and understated scheme with walls in Resene Moonlight and floors in Resene Grey Olive, looks warm and inviting to guests and the door in Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta offers a cheerful surprise with edges painted Resene Influential. The vintage bench was given an update in Resene Chorus Line
and Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta and offers seating for those heading out to tie their shoes with plenty of space underneath for painted baskets to keep footwear that’s still waiting to be worn out of sight. These hooks are handmade using a small piece of pine painted Resene Quarter Pearl
Lusta – to match the door, picture frame and bench legs – with a few simple hooks painted in Resene Influential so that there is always a place to hang coats, scarves and umbrellas. Kate has also brought in plenty of natural textures like the Sahara Weave entrance mat from The Ivy House, which plays
off the colours in the artwork; the woven kete baskets painted Resene Grey Olive and Resene Influential, which provide extra storage to keep smaller bits and bobs like keys and sunnies; and the old fashioned broom with a handle painted Resene Influential is at the ready for a quick clean-up.

Planning for Change
Bu siness planning takes on ne w impor tance in a t ime of unce r taint y.
So here we go again. Intermittent déjà vu and another period of challenge and change with Alert Levels altering and patience slowly eroding in places.
The literature pointed out that this group requires great character and commitment to service, technical expertise, physical ability and the capacity to cope with enormous stress.
It’s the life all of us have come to know and the reality is that it’s likely to be with us all for a long time yet, and what I’m referring to are the effects of a lengthy pandemic on our own individual journeys and psyche.
All of these attributes are found in successful teams and businesses, and I’m reminded of how essential these strengths are when I think about the times we are working in. So much evolution, from the 2020 lockdown, corresponding fears and market consequences, to the never-predicted-by-anyone pre-Christmas property grab where spectacular auctions and strong results for owners fuelled an incredible platform for prices never seen before, to another period in Level Two right now (as this article is written).
It requires resilience and fortitude to manage yourself, your life, your family and your business during all of this, so it’s important to spend time working on these capabilities. Personally, I do this best with a plan in my sights and a team by my side, which takes me to our annual business planning session. With the benefit of guidance from extraordinary mentors Gilbert Enoka and Paul Wright, our leadership team and I have been able to think deeply about what’s needed in our business over the next twelve months (24 months is too far!) – and also what constantly distinguishes great teams. You could easily think that there’s nothing new to consider or develop when you’ve worked on this for over two decades, but the opposite is true and good mentors will push you to enter that space, reminding us that “it’s about movement, not judgement.” So, to what I’ve learnt. Any planning session I’ve been party to – and with the initial plan always followed by quarterly reviews, there have been a lot of them – has always been preceded by an educative session. This year’s session involved a study I knew of but hadn’t considered in depth, and strangely enough it was the second presentation in a week that referred to this same organisation: the US Navy SEALs. Although I don’t personally relate to the tasks this elite group undertake, I’m now more aware of the incredible trust required for them to function, making them one of the highest performing organisations in the world.
It’s hard to know where the market’s going to go as we navigate the year, but all of us have got to get used to constant change. Something that is always made better with the wind in your sails and a team by your side. I’m grateful that our team and our people have the character, resilience and technical ability to keep delivering, and I want to keep assisting that process. As a leader, assisting the process takes all these skills, and the function of business planning is to provide a forum to develop them even more. Have you done your own plan for the year? Have you challenged yourself to be better? If so, all the best, if not yet, then take some time to look at the example of the US Navy SEALs and consider how far trust, character, work ethic and consideration can take you. The journey is waiting and then … be happy this March!

Autumn garden
Soil away In your edible garden, replace the nutrients lost during the heavy growing season and provide a healthy foundation for your autumn and winter crops by adding in compost, blood and bone and sheep pellets. In your flower garden, mulch flower beds to suppress weeds.
Mighty micros Autumn is a wonderful time to plant microgreens. Sow the seeds into your chosen container with a light coverage of potting mix and a healthy dose of H2O, then cover with plastic. Sit somewhere bright – like a windowsill – and wait for the sprouts to appear.
As the leaves begin to turn, we welcome in the new season of autumn with its chillier temperatures and spectacular showing of red, oranges and yellows. Perhaps you’ll be wrapping up warmer as you head out to enjoy the colour show, but when it comes to your garden – it’s time to get planting!
Palatable plantings It’s a great time to plant broccoli, cauli, cabbage, beetroot, spinach and Chinese cabbages. Lettuces should still prosper in early Autumn, too. It’s also time to sow seeds for winter crops like carrots, swedes, turnips and radish – remembering to protect them with a cloche or growing tunnel should your garden be frost-prone.
Flower power Autumn is a time for potted plants to thrive, and blooms like pansies, violas and polyanthus are go-to colourful friends which can tolerate the cooler temps. It’s also, of course, the best time to plant bulbs in preparation for spring flowering.

Artistic garden additions A garden is a home’s oasis, it is a tranquil place to experience the art and wonder of nature and science. As industry experts, Grow Landscapes & Lifestyle know all about this - and also stock an impressive and unmatched range of water features and pots to elevate your natural habitat.
B
huddas, urns, bowls, tiered waterfalls and infinity designs are amongst the impressive array of water features on show at Grow’s Moorhouse Avenue store. The artistic and sophisticated designs showcase craftsmanship from Vietnam
and Bali, with designs made from a range of natural and man-made materials like concrete, fibreglass and cement. “Water features are our speciality,” says the showroom manager. “We have more than 25 models on display all working. We carry many
different sizes and styles in a range of colours – there really is everything you can imagine.” A recent arrival of concrete designs from Bali has proved especially popular during the summer, and there are still a number of items in store. Special orders can also be made. Water features can be delivered and installed by Grow’s team, or it is a simple process for customers themselves. All that is needed is a level surface, water supply and 240-vault power supply. In most cases many homes will have an outdoor power supply, otherwise an electrician can install one. Aside from water features, Grow‘s vast range of pots cater to gardens and outdoor areas of all shapes and aesthetics. The store have everything you can imagine. Lightweight fibreglass and cement models are especially
popular, as are rectangular troughs, and shallow and dish planters – some up to 2m wide – which are an option for showcasing special plants like Cloud Trees. These come in black, white, coffee bean brown, cement colour, glazed, and glazed terracotta. Aside from these garden adornments, Grow has been working in Christchurch for more than 10 years with a team of 13 landscapers. In more recent times, its artificial lawn has become a very popular option – with many customers reporting back how many compliments they are getting on their “healthy, luscious-looking lawns.” Pop into Grow Landscape & Lifestyle at 69 Moorhouse Avenue from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday or 10am to 4pm Saturdays, call to discuss the range on (03) 365 9945, or check out the website below.

CHRISTCHURCH CITY MAYOR
CANTEBURY EMPLOYER’S CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE
Welcome to Christchurch!
Spotlight on Covid-19
I was in a coffee shop the other day when someone asked me if I was the Mayor. Turns out she had recently moved from Auckland to take up a job here, and it was her chance to let me know how much she was enjoying the move.
The last few weeks have intensified the spotlight on Covid-19. We have seen changes in Alert Levels, which have again caused disruption in our community. However this time we were all better prepared, with systems and practices in place to be able to respond.
The rent she was paying was much lower, and the pace of life was a welcome change as well. She thought the city was great and was only going to get better. It was fantastic to hear a young person speaking about what this city represents to her generation. She said she knew others her age who were moving here as well. This conversation represents the real opportunity our city has at our fingertips. We have enormous benefits that flow from having more affordable housing options and a relatively easy city to get around. We have fantastic facilities and will have several more that exceed anything
a city of our size would normally have. Facilities like the Margaret Mahy playground and our city library, Tūranga, make us a really child-friendly city, and we should never underestimate the value of that for residents and visitors. I know that the pandemic has caused major challenges for many residents and businesses, especially those that rely on international visitors, so we need to ramp up the domestic market. It’s time those of us who haven’t, to invite family and friends to come to the city and have a good look around. It might even make some think about Christchurch as a place to live.
SPRING GROVE, BELFAST
This was foreshadowed by the announcement of the arrival of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine and planned roll-out throughout the population. The vaccine is positive news because it provides a degree of certainty and confidence for the community as well as businesses. It is also an important milestone in moving towards operating in an environment with Covid-19 given the likelihood of this pandemic being around for the foreseeable future, following the latest outbreaks offshore. As the roll-out progresses, we will be working with government to ensure there is good science and evidencedbased information around the vaccination for all employers to

pass on to their employees, to ensure we are all able to make well-informed decisions. It will be interesting to see the impact of the vaccine on how we manage our borders and Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) facilities and how this will evolve as we learn more about the virus and continue to develop technology and systems for rapid tracking and tracing of cases. As the reality is that we need to learn to live with Covid-19 and in such a way that businesses can continue to operate, trade and travel in a Covid-19-safe way to continue to support our economy and the livelihoods of all New Zealanders.

New developments
Having wrapped up a fantastic summer of events, capped off with the biggest coup of all – securing Christchurch as host city for global sailing event Sail GP 2022 – it’s worth a look at why major events form a key part of our economic recovery.
In what might be the best gauge of current developer confidence in Christchurch, we have just gone to market with our largest central city land parcel.
If you were one of the 13,800 people at the Blackcaps v Pakistan test, you’ll know the vibrancy family-friendly events bring. If you were one of the 1.1 million broadcast viewers watching the T20 Black Clash at Hagley Oval you’ll have seen the exposure this gave our city and heard international commentators compliment our hospitality, urban culture, amazing street art and new experiences. If you attended one of the 30 Bread & Circus Backyard Buskers Festival events you’ll have felt the sense of resident pride and community alongside the
laughs and acrobatics. If you’ve invited friends or whānau to visit our city to attend one of these events – or any of the other sporting, music, art or cultural events on show – you may have reflected on how far we’ve come in the last decade and just how much Christchurch has to offer. We’re looking forward to an even bigger and better 2022 – Covid-19 levels allowing – drawing more visitors, adding fuel to our economy, creating jobs, supporting livelihoods and demonstrating why Ōtautahi Christchurch is a city of exploration and bold ambition.
At over 8000m2 the site bordered by Madras, Armagh and Gloucester Streets is the biggest blank canvas development opportunity you will see this close to Cathedral Square anytime soon. The site’s most significant neighbour is Fletcher Living’s One Central, where homes are selling fast, with close to 200 now purchased. Naturally this burgeoning neighbourhood will need and support further commercial developments in the area. So, we look forward to seeing a range of proposals for the Madras Street land. Having recently divested some other significant sites around city, we know there’s a renewed appetite
for development in Christchurch. Our sale of the former IRD building late last year will lead to the creation of a nationally significant centre for research, training and the development of dementia care related opportunities. A stunning new medical services facility is also on the way as a result of our sale of the former Oxford Clinic site last month. So, I will be sure to let you know how we get on with the Madras Street site. I am hopeful a successful sale of this size will also be a call to action for others who have been waiting for the right time to move forward with plans for their own vacant sites around this city.

Huadu sees the Health Precinct as an important part of the social and economic infrastructure of Christchurch and the region delivering better health services and attracting talented people to our city. “This project builds on Huadu’s existing commitment to the precinct and with [this] announcement we can now advance discussions with other parties wanting to be part of this project and the wider Health Precinct. “It will assist with the everincreasing health needs of the garden city and New Zealand for generations to come.” Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive John Bridgman says it is a positive development for the city’s rebuild. “This is a good outcome for Christchurch as the facility
will build on the success of the Health Precinct in this important corner of the CBD.” A consent application Huadu filed to Christchurch City Council last year proposed a seven-storey building for procedure rooms and luxury recovery suites, with spaces for retail
or services on the ground floor, conference space, and basement car and bike parking. Huadu built the precinct’s Manawa research building and is also behind an international language school in the old Christchurch court building, luxury accommodation on

Accommodating a new build Ten years after the Canterbury Earthquakes destroyed the Cancer Society’s Christchurchbased accommodation and support services building, the $20 million rebuild is set to go ahead.
T
he project, at 74 Langdons Road, Papanui, is due to begin in May and be completed
by early 2023. It received a $6.5 million boost from the Crown’s Shovel Ready Project
Initiative Fund, set up as part of the government’s economic response to Covid-19. Cancer Society CanterburyWest Coast Chief Executive Elizabeth Chesterman says the charity was thrilled to receive the funding for the “longawaited rebuild”. “Over the past ten years we have had to react quickly and frequently relocate our operations to ensure we could keep providing the services that people with cancer from around our region rely on,” she says. The accommodation facilities provide a “home away from home” for people from around
the South Island and the Chatham Islands who need to come to Christchurch Hospital for cancer treatment. The new building will include modern, welcoming facilities away from the hospital environment designed for overnight accommodation, as well as facilities for support groups and education, with ample carparking. Further funds for the project will be raised via a fundraising campaign. Sponsorship enquiries can be directed to Janice PorterHoare, Fundraising and Events Manager, on 021 198 5392.

Renovation appreciation It’s a big win with the very first entry for local company Urbane Construction in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Regional Finals. The judges awarded Gold for the sympathetic extension to an existing home.
D
irector Tom Aiken says this build was special for its use of four species of timber which tie the addition to the original home. “The design of the extension is in complete harmony with the original home, but it brings an
extra openness and warmth,” he says. Built in the late 1980s, the Eyreton home was designed by the owner’s father. The extension by Vernon White creates a seamless transition from new to old by using
similar design features: raking ceilings, rimu windows and trims, balau decking, rusticated weatherboards and reuse of original bricks. The result is a home at one with its setting within parklands cultivated by the owners over 30 years. Tom’s favourite features are the solid timber beech flooring that runs from the new extension through the altered kitchen and dining room areas, into the new wet/tack room as well as the cladding in rusticated weatherboards which were custom run in New Zealand Larch. Every project brings challenges; access to the site and the weather during excavations required Tom’s careful management, with consideration for the owners
who lived on site for the duration of the build. Future projects are just as exciting with extension projects in St Albans and on the Port Hills, a full reclad and repair in Cashmere as well as several smaller projects throughout Canterbury. “We specialise in extensions and large renovations where design and execution is critical,” says Tom. “But we also build unique, architecturally designed homes throughout the region.” Every project receives Urbane Construction’s customised communication with the clients. “All of our clients are special to us and we make sure that their new home or renovation project exceeds their expectations in both quality and delivery.”

Proud by name and result An entire exterior replaster transformed this earthquake damaged house into a beautiful, healthy home. Greg Proudfoot Plastering worked with other contractors to not only repair this home, but ensure its long-term maintenance – while looking brand spanking new.
G
reg and his team were engaged to replaster this ‘90s home in Christchurch – but it was not a straightforward job. “Before we could start the remediation of the house itself, there were a few building and roofing details which needed to be sorted,” says Greg. “Attached pergolas were removed,
straightened and new brackets put into the wall by Ben Rogatski at Onform Building, who did an outstanding job. The original design didn’t have parapet cappings, external rain heads or an overflow system, so Iain McPhail from DCM Roofing worked his magic adding that as well as custom made saddle flashings and parapet caps.” When it came to the exterior replaster,
Greg says he chose Resene Construction Systems’ RMAXX, a strong and durable coating which was applied entirely by hand before being finished with Rockcote Acrylic Quicksand and Resene X200 Acrylic Paint. “RMAXX has incredible flexibility with excellent adhesive properties to provide cover and protection to your most important investment,” he says. Our homes are often our most important assets, so when choosing the right person to make earthquake repairs, track record is imperative. “We’re really proud of the quality of the work our staff do and the results we continually achieve for our clients.” Phone Greg and his team to discuss your EQC, insurance or other plastering needs on 021 611 663 or via info@proudfootplastering.co.nz. www.gregproudfootplastering.co.nz

he latest products, identifying the right product for the job, new skills, and a variety of challenging projects are what drive these five craftsmen. The brief for the project in St Andrews square had the team on fire: a unique and bespoke exterior plaster finish for the garage to complement the cedar-clad home. It required a spectre finish acheived with Rockcote product, a waterbased exterior plaster. “It was our first time using the product and we thoroughly enjoyed the learning process,” says Director Scott. “The broom finish required the lines to be absolutely straight but hand done in one motion. We mastered it and the result speaks for itself.” The team specialise in both interior and exterior plastering in everything from heritage buildings, new builds, EQC work, whole buildings or feature walls. “Whatever the project large or small, we deliver and our clients are happy.” Phone Scott on 021 940 945 to discuss your plastering needs.
