From the Editor As we begin to descend into something resembling pre-pandemic times, all the opportunities to gather with and celebrate those we love, seem even more momentous. Every year, Metropol publishes its bridal issue which showcases the array of local wedding vendors who can pull together your Canterbury nuptials, as well as highlighting the global trends influencing modern-day marriages. After the highly disrupted wedding season that was, the tentative promise of normality on the horizon may bring some peace of mind to engaged couples currently planning their big days. And if you fall into this group of loved-up readers, then this issue is for you. This issue includes everything you need to know: Venues, event styling ideas, bride and groom fashion is covered off, as are catering, cakes, rings and ways to preserve the memories. And, because a big day is not a big day without those specially chosen guests, there is lots of reading for you, too. Like most things in our world, the way we think about love Metropol and relationships Circulation has changed in the last unforgettable year since our previous bridal issue was published. Hotere comes to town

A free exhibition of one of New Zealand’s most important artists is showing at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. Ralph Hotere: Ātete (to resist) is co-curated by Christchurch Art Gallery and Dunedin Public Art Gallery and brings together works from collections across the country.

6 15 April, 2021 Metropol

hristchurch Art Gallery Director Blair Jackson says the exhibition has been a huge project to bring together. “Hotere’s art is enormously significant in Aotearoa – particularly now in these politically charged days,” he says. “It’s been more than 20 years since the last survey of his work, and we’re pleased to be able to show so many of these important and deeply meaningful works to a new generation. “The show charts Hotere’s journeys throughout Aotearoa and the world, and is a reflection of his experiences, identity, concerns and politics. It includes formative abstraction, strident works of protest and landmark works such as Black Phoenix and Godwit/ Kuaka.” The exhibition has already been on display in Dunedin – where Hotere lived for many years. Blair says the exhibition has sparked many visitors to share their own memories of the places, moments and issues that feature in his work. “I’m sure it will have the same effect on those that visit here in Ōtautahi,” he says. It runs until July 25, and is free to attend.

The show has gone on FOR 50 YEARS

Back in 1971 when The Court Theatre was founded in Christchurch, other professional theatres were also springing up all over the country for the first time. Yet from that era, The Court is the only one to survive, and will celebrate its 50th anniversary on April 21.

A

new book – The History of The Court Theatre by Felicity Price (with Derek Hargreaves) has been written to mark the 50th anniversary. The pair say they wanted to write the book because, “The Court gets under your skin – the drama onstage and off, the love and respect with which it is held by so many in Christchurch and above all, the people who work, act,

create and volunteer there.” Mayor Lianne Dalziel echoes Felicity Price’s sentiments saying, “From small beginnings 50 years ago, The Court Theatre has grown to become a treasured institution in Christchurch.” Founders Yvette Bromley and Mervyn Thompson took a leap of faith back in 1971. Their new enterprise was indeed small and humble without even a permanent theatre to call home. Over the first

out & about A cast of hundreds has nurtured and developed the theatre over its long history.

10 months of its existence The Court Theatre operated from three locations. The first was the Stone Chamber of the Canterbury Provincial Council Chambers where the debut production The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was staged. The peripatetic theatre then moved to the Durham Street Art Gallery, to the Beggs Theatrette and then to relative stability at the Orange Hall. It was not until 1976 that The Court Theatre moved to the Arts Centre, its home until 2011 and the venue where many people will have had their first experience of the magic of a Court Theatre performance. A cast of hundreds has nurtured and developed the theatre over its long history. Of course, the founders themselves and later artistic directors and chief executives Elric Hooper and Stuart Alderton (1980s – 2000), Ross Gumbley and Philip Aldridge (2006 – 2018) and currently Barbara George and Dan Pengelly. These double-acts have married art and commerce to work together to run a highly successful theatre operation. What else is behind The Court’s

success and longevity when so many others have fallen by the wayside? The answer is that the programme has been varied, the standards always high and above all the theatre and its artistic directors have been astute in knowing what the audience wants. The latter was a consistent theme during Elric Hooper’s 20 year tenure.

He declared from the outset that his intent was to balance the theatre’s repertoire with “three main thrusts – the classic, the contemporary and the indigenous.” Come 2011 the Christchurch earthquakes saw The Court out of its Arts Centre home and looking for a new space, which was found in Addington. Fondly known as The Shed, this is where the theatre is today. But the story of The Court has another act to play out – its move into a new $39 million purpose-built theatre in the central city, opposite Tūranga, on the corner of Gloucester and Colombo streets. Due to open in late 2023, that will be The Court’s home for the next 50 years.

Over the weekend of April 23 - 25, The Court Theatre is celebrating 50 years of treading the boards with a number of special events for past company, volunteers and the public. A black-tie gala with dinner and spectacular entertainment is planned for April 24. Tickets are available at The Court Theatre.

sold!

Going, going,

Experienced Mike Pero Real Estate agents Annette Pendergast and Sahab Hussain know a thing or two about selling property. They share five key elements which help to ensure the best outcome in a quality campaign and successful sale.

How much is my property worth? “After viewing your home, a market appraisal using a comparison of properties of a similar age, size and presentation, and what they are selling for is provided.” What documents do I need? “Depending on the legal structure, we need to verify the identity of each owner. We source the title, LIM and council property documents for you, and need any EQC and insurance claim details, along with your current insurance policy. Building and testing reports may also be required.” How do I prepare my property for sale? “Presentation is key, however it may not mean capitalising on renovations. Based on expectations of buyers, banks and insurance companies, we can advise on preparation to ensure the smooth sale process. And we guide on presentation for photos and open homes to drive the best selling price.” How long does it take to sell a home? “Every property has a different campaign, and we provide a timeline for preparation, photography and presentation, open homes, offers, contracts and settlement date.” How does the advertising work? “Every property is considered uniquely and not just offered an off the shelf package. We discuss the ideal method of sale – auction, deadline, price by negotiation etc, to reach of your potential-buyers first home buyers to down-sizing retirees, families to investors or developers, and ensure invested advertising reaches the correct demographic.” Contact Annette and Sahab on the details below.

rom its five-acre, purpose-built adoption centre in Bromley, Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust rescues, cares for and rehomes dogs that have been abandoned at pounds throughout Canterbury, or surrendered from private situations. The registered charity relies entirely on donations and fundraising to finance its operations and has a dedicated group of about 80 volunteers who help care for the dogs, clean and maintain facilities, and match dogs to adopters. There is also a network of foster homes and families. Manager Kelly Burt says demand for the charity’s services is always high, but with donations and volunteers there can be wider education and improvements for Canterbury’s dogs. “There has always been a high demand, I have been

here for eight years and it has never not been busy. We are here to improve dogs’ lives, whether that’s in our care or in the community. We have an outreach programme which provides food or helps with subsidised desexing.” Its network of volunteers work across its shelter, as well as its variety op shop at 90 Beresford Street, New Brighton. If you want to support Dogwatch you can donate high quality, clean goods to the store or keep tabs on other fundraising events like market days on its Facebook pages. You can also sponsor a kennel or make a direct donation to the bank account, or via credit or debit card, on the Dogwatch website below. Q. Beth, when you began your research on how to help your son, Harry, you had an epiphany. What was that? A. When I researched dyslexia, I saw similar traits in myself. Dyslexia exists on a continuum: one person may have a mild spelling difficulty, whereas someone else can’t recognise one syllable words. My dyslexia is mild. Many adults only discover they have dyslexia when their child or grandchild gets a diagnosis. Q. Dyslexia is too often associated with a lack of intelligence or poor parenting. How does your book address this misconception? A. Most people with dyslexia are highly intelligent. Poor parenting isn’t helpful for any child’s learning, but it does not cause dyslexia. Q. Primary schools focus on teaching the child to read and write, but how should the dyslexic child be taught? A. Children with dyslexia require a multisensory structured language approach, such as the Orton-Gillingham method. Dyslexics need small group or individual instruction with lots of repetition. Q. What hope does Dyslexia: Wrestling with an Octopus offer to parents of dyslexic children? A. My book is easy to read and humorous. It takes the form of a conversation between parents at a school gate. I offer 10 tips backed up by research and over a decade of personal experience. I discuss how to tackle learning challenges, the social effects of dyslexia, the importance of finding your child’s strengths and how to nurture their talents. Q. Can you explain the significance behind your wonderful book title? A. Dyslexia is more than a problem with reading and writing. I list eight areas of difficulty which I have likened to the arms on an octopus. For more on this, see www.dyslexiaoctopus.com/welcome. The book can be purchased via the website. The book launch is Tuesday May 11 at Canterbury University, with guest speaker Professor Gail Gillon.

Dealing to dyslexia WORDS CÉLINE GIBSON

The Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand estimates 70,000 schoolchildren in Aotearoa are affected by dyslexia; that equates to one in 10 of us. Beth Beamish is the mother of one such child, and recently she published a book on the subject, Dyslexia: Wrestling with an Octopus.

course, the business needs to continue to operate well, and if appropriate, be fully stocked.” The business broker team at NAI Harcourts Grenadier can ensure your business is presented to the market in the most positive light, ensuring the best possible result achieved for you.

The team deals with enquiries, while ensuring confidentiality and prepares all offers for your consideration. “The benefits of utilising a professional business broker will be many, and you can expect the process to be completed in a stress-free manner, with a great result.”

Q: What should I look for in relation to a lease of business premises? A: 1. Location: A highly visible main thoroughfare site should promote

better performance and brand awareness than more obscure premises. Surrounding yourself with complementary businesses can make it more convenient for customers to shop with you. 2. Condition of premises: Well-presented, or money to spend to bring them up to standard? 3. Term of lease: Choose premises which have a long (10+ years) lease, or a shorter lease with rights of renewal to provide a longer total term. Normally a lease can be exited at a time of renewal without penalty. Conversely, a longer lease term is advantageous if you consider selling in future. 4. Check rent, operating expenses, marketing and maintenance requirements are sustainable. A lease guarantee and bond may be required. ALWAYS seek legal advice to ensure that you understand your obligations, and your needs are being met.

Cash-free coffee

One Christchurch café is putting the “e” in coffee, making a post Covid-19 decision to use only electronic payment. Allpress Espresso has made the call to accept no notes or coins at its Montreal Street café.

oastery and café manager James Nightingale says the cashless system has been largely well received, with staff and customers feeling safer about hygiene. The café was also broken into in mid-2020, so Nightingale hoped having no cash on site would provided added security, too. There is no legal requirement for a business to give out or accept cash, except if it is payment for a debt. The café just one of a small – but growing - number of businesses going cashless in New Zealand, where less than two percent of New Zealand’s money is held in notes and coins. According to Retail NZ chief executive Greg Harford, a preCovid-19 survey revealed a very small number of businesses keen to be cashless, but the same survey post-pandemic saw a large shift.

hether you prefer a flirty feminine feel or more of a beautifully bold style, finding those clothes starts with impeccable design. And it is the only Christchurch store to stock Mela Purdie from across the ditch. Each piece is carefully chosen for its place in the store, considered as much

There’s a certain princess who would approve of the Anne Mardell Leia Tee in French Provence print (exclusive to the brand). Viscose spandex knit paired with a scoop neck and slim, a beautiful combination.

The 100 percent wool Brigit coat from Anne Mardell is both stylish and snuggly. The cocoon shaped piece offers a flattering silhouette for the wearer. Take your pick of peacock, olive (pictured) or red.

Bittermoon offers a shirt that hugs you in all the right places. The Sylvia swing top is sculpting, giving that subtle cinch effect at the waist. We’ll take one in every colour please!

health

Healing from concussion Gill Redden constantly sees the consequence of concussions or bad head knocks that were never identified at the time of the initial accident. That’s because an impact anywhere always sets up a chain of events, which the body tries to accommodate for as long as it can.

G

ill uses the internationally accepted practice of full body Cranio techniques combined with nearly two decades as a professional CranioSacral practitioner. She helps loosen up head, tail and other bones, the membranes surrounding the brain which then form the spinal canal, organs, blood vessels and nerves. By treating the whole body, it assists the nervous system to stay healthy or for people to repair in a non-invasive

manner. This can potentially help with a reduction in pain or problems even decades after an accident, head or other trauma, major dental work or even a bad infection. “Any head knock can mean that head bones, membranes, organs, blood vessels or nerves may no longer be moving well, potentially leading to anxiety, depression, brain fog, poor decision-making, dizziness or other problems – sometimes immediately, but other times years later,” explains Gill.

Gill treats people with a wide range of symptoms including migraines, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, doublevision, fatigue, poor sleeping, vomiting, neck pain, nerve problems, poor concentration, aggression, depression and anxiety.

Her comprehensive website lists positive testimonials, ranging from rugby players who suffered head knocks to others suffering ongoing issues, who have all found relief after attending the Bealey Avenue clinic. For more information, phone (03) 365 7801 or visit the website below.

Tailored to perfection There’s a new pairing in Canterbury and their mutual love for detail and implementing a client’s vision to perfection is what saw the two joining forces. Tailor Mark van Roosmalen or MvR Tailoring and artisan shoemaker Louise Ayling of LA Shoemaker are masters of their respective crafts.

L

ouise honed her craft training and working as a bespoke shoemaker for 10 years in London and is now a welcomed addition to the city bringing her traditional talents with her. Why does she love it so much? “The best part of my job is seeing a customer walk out smiling,” says Louise. Meanwhile, Mark has been helping

clients suit up for over 30 years. He believes there is nothing quite like the confidence that comes from looking your best in a beautifully crafted suit. Add a personal touch to your wedding by investing in a custom-made suit or give an older “sole” a new lease of life with an alteration. But much like the rest of the day, there has to be some planning.

Make sure to get in six months (minimum) before your big day. Because no two bodies are the same, sometimes a millimetre can determine the fit, says the duo. Both artisan crafters are available by appointment and situated conveniently at 140 Durham Street, along with multiple parking options.

Six months Your skin is the canvas on which makeup artists will do their magic. Many brides opt to prepare their skin for the big day by going on a professional plan which addresses any concerns like acne, pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles.

Three months Check in with your skincare specialist to see how any products and treatment are working. Now is the time to get the low down on injectables, and to try out anything new like brow tints or microblading, fake tanning and lashes.

Before the (ever) afters WORDS JESS MURRAY

Now you’ve said, “I do”, it’s time to get onto the to-dos. Because nobody turns up to their wedding looking flawless without a little bit of preparation. Metropol has pulled together your beauty checklist leading up to the happily ever after.

Making perfect scents

Most injectables start to look their best a few weeks (up to six) after the treatment, so you will want to time this just right. Hair conditioning treatments should be done about a month before the big day, and colour about two. Teeth whitening is recommended three weeks prior.

Hi Michaela, so nice to chat with you about AW21 at Mikko! Tell us, in footwear this season, what is the key colour palette? Se nd a l

“I think this has to be my favourite season to date, when it comes to colour. Ultra-luxe and ultra-wearable, our focus is on indulgently rich shades of green, understated but chic tones of grey, decadent hues of vanilla, nougat, biscuit and toffee, and, for a pop of colour, a wardrobebrightening maraschino cherry.”

Exquisite new season edit

How about new styles – what’s a must-have this season?

As the leaves begin to fall around our beautiful city, Mikko Shoes presents an exciting collection of quality European footwear and handbags for the cool weather to come. To give us some wintry wardrobe inspiration, we spoke with Mikko’s founder, Michaela Longstaff, about what key pieces we can expect in store this season.

“Those who love flats will adore our edit this season, as there are many silhouettes to enjoy with a lower heel. As fashion takes a less corporate tone with a reflection on world events, it’s about comfort, versatility and practicality whilst still feeling sophisticated in the process – think combat boots, ladylike loafers, and metallic embellishments for elevated everyday style.”

And for off-duty moments, can we expect your renowned offering of sports-luxe footwear options? “Absolutely, our Sporty Chic collection houses a number of versatile and edgy wedges, lace-ups and new takes on the classic tennis shoe. With a polished play on tones and textures and the perfect combination of form and function, sporty can indeed mean sophisticated!”

Discerning collagen consumers understand that many supplements on the market contain just collagen and vitamin C and are often made from cheaper sourced bovine (from cow) and porcine (from pig). They also know that some collagen supplements have bigger molecules (3000-5000 Daltons) which make it much harder to absorb the collagen. In contrast, Qt’s collagen is professional-grade, finest quality (2000 Daltons), meaning the collagen is bio-available and can be readily absorbed in the body, stimulating new collagen.

Qt have also added an array of unique beauty ingredients to work in synergy with premium collagen for optimum anti-ageing results. For example, Qt’s beauty formula ‘Bellē’ comes in an easy-to-use powder form and includes the wonders of Tremella, a mushroom which can hold up to 400 times its weight in moisture, drawing moisture to the skin and adding volume, softness and elasticity. This humble mushroom is even said to be more effective than Hyaluronic Acid! For good measure, Bellē also contains: the antioxidant stand-out ingredient, Lotus, which eliminates harmful free radicals to help the skin appear brighter and keep proteins strongly bonded; natural Silica for the synthesis of new collagen formation, structure and repair; and Vitamin C which optimises absorption of the collagen and its beautifying effects. For men, Bellē’s counterpart product is ‘Beaū’, a rejuvenating, detoxifying and energising formula. In combination with ‘Encorē for Him’, with Beaū you can be sure your man will be feeling in tiptop condition, not just for the Wedding…but also for the honeymoon! Manufactured in New Zealand, Qt is the world’s first Internal Cosmetic, and we love it.

What can your genes say about your health? Head Pharmacist Annabel Turley.

T

Did you know your DNA can provide a blueprint for your health? And a new genetic testing service at Unichem Cashel can help people make better choices about their health, with trained pharmacists able to offer personal advice based on your genetic makeup.

he inner-city pharmacy is now home to Ingeneous DNA testing, which uses specialised sequence testing to provide insights and information that you can act on to improve your health and wellbeing. Head Pharmacist Annabel Turley has completed specialist training to bring Ingenous to Canterbury, as she herself has used genetic testing to improve her health. “One of the reasons I got into genetic testing is because there is some inherited conditions in my family, and identifying those at a genetic level allows me to make

lifestyle changes which can reduce my chances of the conditions developing.” Ingeneous is designed to help you make better choices with personalised advice, designed for your unique genetic makeup. Its founder, Dr Libby Lindsay, developed the service after years of battling eczema, migraines, lactose intolerance, depression and infertility. “Understanding your genetic blueprint can have a profound impact on your wellbeing,” she says. “When I finally did a DNA test I learnt how I could improve my

health by understanding how my body responded to diet, exercise, lifestyle and supplements. Having this personalised genetic roadmap changed my life.” While our genes are fixed, environmental and lifestyle factors can influence how they are expressed, which is why Ingeneous reports and recommendations are designed to be useful and practical, says Dr Lindsay. “I want to get the word out that your quality of life can be improved. One of the best ways of really knowing our health potential lies within our genes.”

‘H

Weddings all over the South Island are a speciality, and owner and chef Chantelle Quinn can conjure the feast of your dreams anywhere, often with just two ovens and a barbeque. “We are very versatile and we have said yes to every location so far.” Chantelle works closely with couples to ensure the logistics work and menus are personalised to each wedding. The food is classic French with Kiwi flavours, rustic, often with a lot of protein. Six different meats could feature throughout the reception, which goes down extremely well with more rural weddings. “I love seeing a wedding guest in an exquisite dress and fascinator tucking into a lamb cutlet and going back for more!”

Especially in this market, finding an agent with an energetic, work hard, work smart personality, can achieve incredible results.”

She advises when choosing an agent, don’t just focus on fees. “Ask the question: Who is open and honest with the passion, perseverance, and skill to get real results? Leaving no stone unturned leads to a house sold - for the best price possible; and that’s what my clients receive.” Tanith offers advice and obligation-free market appraisals to help guide you on achieving a stunning result.

Location, location, location So the proposal is locked in, and you’ve set the date. But now another question arises: Where should you tie the knot? 50 shades of silver

When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, it’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

J

ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based in hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!”

Coming to a shelf near you Local purveyors of clean (the only filler is love), low-allergy meat and small goods, Bangers ‘N’ Bacon, is coming to a shelf near you in supermarkets and retailers.

ounder Pete Nolan started the business when his sons’ food allergies and intolerances meant many of his favourite foods were off the table. With the challenge of not using any gluten, dairy, wheat, soy, corn, egg, tomatoes, artificial preservatives, nitrates, colourings or flavourings – he has produced a delicious range of clean meats. Minimally processed and created using only top quality, locally sourced meat, herbs and special homemade seasoning blends, products include all meat sausage, dry cured smoke BBQ pork belly strips and streaky bacon, sirloin steaks and loin steaks. “We have been getting such good feedback from the market from people who are gluten-free and coeliac, people who have Crohn’s disease, people who have preservative intolerances,” he says. A recent Ministry for Primary Industries registration means Pete can now sell the delicious products to wholesalers like supermarkets. Baked with love Wedding planning has got some sweet relief as the side effects of the Covid-19 pandemic look to be slowing down. And when it comes to choosing one of the sweetest parts of your big day, Metropol has rounded up some of the biggest confections trends for the wedding season ahead. EDIBLE BLOOMS According to wedding experts, edible pressed flowers are shaping up to be a major cake trend. That is, actual real flowers which can be eaten. Playing into the refined boho theme, edible flowers look especially beautiful when pressed into the icing.

MINI DELIGHTS As ceremonies and celebrations become more intimiate to avoid possible Covd-19 restrictions, cakes are also taking a downsize. According to theknot.com, micro and single tier cakes are in vogue, and may be used just for cutting as guests enjoy an array of other desserts.

TEXTURED TIERS Piping is nice, but texture is looking to be on the wedding cake agenda this season. Created by imperfect markings (pictured), artistic patterns and designs, and detailing, texture is tipped by theknot.com to stick around for a while, too.

Another level of events “Level One Events caters to traditionalist couples through to the wild ones who want anything but!” says Wedding Planner Kate Grater. Level One Craft Beer & Coffee Bar launched Level One Events in 2020 so couples can have it all.

T

he boho beach style is rich décor, dark green foliage, bar leaners, plush sofas and comfy relaxing nooks for guests to converse. Kate says while weddings are changing with the times, traditional affairs hold the same grace and style as ever. “Embracing the new wave in the ‘I do’ department leads way for niche pop-up, micro, elopement, and bespoke wedding services.” Level One Events hosts and creates beautiful events, unique to each couple. “Every couple envisions the look and feel of their day. We match their requests with our services, based on taste, style and budget. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ wedding package,

because no love is the same. “We’ve heard complaints of confusing price structures, too many options and overwhelming correspondence between involved parties. Our straight forward wedding planning is a no-fuss approach, so you can focus on what’s important.” Level One provides all or part of the venue, catering, décor and planning, all year round. “We’re here to assist in making magic happen, not breaking the bank - to really enjoy the planning process, right through to ‘I do’.” Visit Levelone.nz or pop into level 1/217 Marine Parade, New Brighton. The broad menu has something for weddings, birthdays, meetings, seminars, anniversaries and fundraisers, with à la carte, set menus, buffets or drinks and nibbles. home TASTE OF LUXURY As the happy couple have likely splashed out for their big day, they may not have the budget to buy anything luxurious for a while. So, why not set them up for their new life together with something useful which will last a lifetime. Some favourites include; luxe throw rugs and bed linen, fine glassware and cookware; and beautiful ornate picture frames.

Something new… Choosing a wedding gift can be a daunting task; you want to purchase something special which will be well used and loved by the loved-up couple, but there is so much to choose from! So, here are Metropol’s tips for picking a winning wedding gift.

VOUCH FOR IT Of course, many modern couples already have their homes and have filled them with items they love. So, why not consider gifting an experience? Travel may be off the cards for now, but it will be back eventually. And in the meantime, NZ is full of bucket list worthy destinations and activities to tick off which can all be purchased with a voucher.

REGISTER YOUR INTEREST

So Cosy Cusco Hand Woven So Cosy Blanket

Many couples choose a wedding registry for guests which contain the items they most covet. Choosing these items is a sure way to gift something the couple wants and loves, while still picking something personal, too. If your couple doesn’t have a registry, browse the “most popular” lists on sites like Mildred & Co. and tyingtheknot.co.nz for gift ideas.

Natural attraction Encourage sweet soothing sleep with a bedroom painted in soft character neutrals, filled with natural texture and a warming palette of colours. Bohemian-style has really enjoyed its time in the sun. Traditional boho style is a delightful mix of pattern and bright colour to create perfectly undone – but totally done – spaces.

W

hile this jumble of eclectic goodness is still popular, bohemian-style has taken a slight U-turn into a more minimalist realm of interiors. This new take still celebrates the relaxed, natural appeal of traditional boho looks but tones it down with a more neutral colour palette. This room has done just that by utilising a base of character neutrals. These, as the name suggests, are neutral hues. But they’re much more intriguing than your typical true neutral, which can end up looking cold or flat. Thanks to their subtle undertones, these hues with soul bring that extra little something

to a space. In this room, Resene Eighth Canterbury – a warming character neutral – dons the walls while Resene Eighth Joss covers the floor. These two hues provide the perfect base for other colours and textures to be layered on top while still adding to the atmosphere of the room themselves. If you want to go further with natural textures, you could also bring in raw wood finishes, dried flowers or clay ornaments – the different grains and materials will add that little bit of extra character. A crisp white, like Resene Quarter Black White, is needed in this space to prevent it being too beige and too soft. Here, it’s brought in through the fresh white linen bedding – again, achieving that balance of edgy but soft. Soft apricots, such as the linen cushions, provide sweet pops of colour and work particularly well when paired with dusty pinks, such as Resene Just Right. To achieve this look, be cautious of veering too close to vibrant coral hues. Instead, keep your palette of oranges and pinks relatively muted – they’ll be gentler on the eye and won’t overwhelm the room’s quiet calm.

In good Gracefield

We are accustomed to seeing the perfection of the hill and architectural builds for which award-winning construction company Jim The Builder is renowned. A lesser-known string to their bow, however, is their expertise in earthquake repairs to existing homes.

A

picturesque and historic bungalow in the central city was lucky enough to come to the attention of the team at Jim The Builder. “It was a failed repair which needed to be redone, right from foundation

Having lived there since the early 1980s, the home owners had no intention of moving on from their cherished home, either before or after the repairs were completed, and were keen to ensure the home retained its authenticity. “The most challenging part of any earthquake repair is the upfront paper work and agreeing on a scope of works with the insurer. After that, the building work is comparatively easy,” says Jim. “We have a very strong compliance team working with us including quantity surveyors and project managers as well as lawyers, to ensure correct interpretation of the client’s insurance policy.”

reparation and relevelling through to the finishing character details. We needed to retain as much of the original structure as possible, such as the skirtings and architraves,” says director Jim Stenberg.

Of course, building regulations have become more rigorous over time, and it is important that the clients receive a settlement including cover for those costs. Jim The Builder ensure that claims are settled in a nonadversarial way. “We are working completely for the client’s interests and a big part of the job is understanding that clients have been on an emotional roller coaster for ten years,” says Jim. “We keep that in the forefront of our minds on every project – that there has been pressure in clients’ lives and in their relationships. Only those that have gone through this process in Canterbury, as our team have, can really understand that.” www.jimthebuilder.co.nz Metropol 15 April, 2021 69

Complex repair, made easy Apartment blocks and townhouse complexes have proved a tangled skein for many a frustrated and exhausted owner working through the repair process under the auspices of a body corporate management structure. A welcome ray of light comes in the form of local construction experts Jim The Builder.

T

hrough word-of-mouth referrals and from lawyers working in the field, Director Jim Stenberg and his team have been bringing their experience and expertise in complex builds to the apartment and

townhouse earthquake repair sector. They address complex management, liability, damage, and apportionment issues, and knit together solutions which lead to happy and grateful homeowners.

The ability for people to move on with their lives after having been trapped in the situation for so long was very rewarding.

Each of the four apartments had reacted differently to the shaking. “It seems random and unexplained, but it results in the need for individual repair strategies,” says Jim. “For the apartments we implemented a tight plan to make the site restrictions work, and new compliance regulations meant the use of newer technologies such as flashings to ensure weathertightness but getting down to the repairs themselves is usually very straightforward for our team and that proved to be the case on this project.” Jim’s favourite thing on the project was seeing three of the four apartments sold on completion. “The ability for people to move on with their lives after having been trapped in the situation for so long was very rewarding.” Jim the Builder has also been involved with the government’s On Sold programme since its inception, and are now help several homeowners through the process. A group of four standalone three storey apartments in the central city involved multiple owners. The apartments were managed through a body corporate, and each of the four units had suffered different types of damage and to differing degrees. Each unit had suffered through failed repairs in the past and Jim the Builder was engaged to put things right, once and for all. “The Insurance policy settlement was made as a lump sum to the body corporate, administered by Thompson Wentworth,” says Jim. “We then worked to apportion the settlement between the units.” Together with Anthony Thompson and his team, Jim the Builder mountaineered through an Aoraki of paperwork, liaising with owners and ensuring their requirements were met. “There is no doubt that body corporate repairs can be challenging, but Anthony and the owners were great to work with. It can be an emotive process and were able to ensure that transparency was key, pricing was crystal clear, and our communication was precise.”

NOSTALGIC VIBES Embracing rustic and vintage vibes is nothing new when it comes to wedding décor, but the style endures. Mismatched and kitschy glassware and crockery create a fun yet fashionable atmosphere, and when applied to furniture and furnishings can make attaining the tables and seating easier than taking a more uniform approach.

COLOURS A PLENTY More and more couples are leaning into bold colourful weddings themes which feature less creams and white and more fresh, nature-driven hues. Said to be bright, fun and happy – these palettes are present on everything from invites and stationary, to décor, tablescapes and food.

Setting the scene

FLOWER POWER This might sound silly, given that flowers are synonymous with weddings, but blooms fresh and dried really are taking centre stage in nuptial styling. From large roof hangings and table centrepieces to more modest bouquets and bunches - the power of flowers is unmatched.

A defining feature of planning and organising a wedding is choosing a theme or style for the big day, which underpins the details on everything from invitations, to ceremony set-ups, reception tablescapes and venue styling. Metropol has rounded up three trends tipped to influence weddings in 2021 and beyond.

MARQUEE-ING THE OCCASION

home

No matter how outdoors a wedding reception is, many couples opt for some kind of roof just in case. And these come in the forms of marquees. Designs in recent years have included contemporary clear, bohemian giant teepee-style as well as repurposing less temporary structures like old barns or woolsheds.

GAME ON While the bridal party take photos and guests are left to their own devices, add a fun element to the afternoon with some lawn games. From croquet to pétanque, corn hole, kubb, giant Jenga and ring toss – there is nothing like having some competitive fun in the afternoon sun. Especially if there is some music, canapés and champagne involved, too. You can even make them yourself!

LIGHT IT UP Festoon, fairy, chandeliers, and lanterns – ideas for creating a romantic glow when the sun goes down can be as endless as your imagination. While candles create the ultimate atmosphere, these come with obvious caveats (wind, hazard), but many electric options mimic the desired soft glow and can be hung from trees, tents or poles for height, or arranged as part of table centrepieces.

ZONING OUT A seated dinner of course provides tables and chairs for guests to rest and soak in the speeches and their table’s company, but pre- and post-meal it can be a convenient (and cute) idea to create seating zones. From antique-style furniture, to hay bales and bean bags – get creative to create interesting chillout zones.

All year, all weather outdoor entertaining With daylight saving over, the nights are longer and cooler. But that doesn’t mean you and your guests can’t still enjoy outdoor living all year round. Contact the team at Louvre Solutions, and ensure your outdoor entertainent area provides shade and protection from the elements. Make your place the centre of attention in summer and winter with the perfect louvre solution. www.louvresolutions.co.nz | Ph: 0275 356 286

Long-lasting flower power Bridal bouquets and floral arrangements are often a crucial element of the big day as modern couples pay homage to traditional wedding day accoutrements. Canterbury is home to many talented florists who can make your floral fantasies come to life, but you can also take the reigns to make the blooms last, long after the reception ends. Here are Metropol’s tips for preserving your big day blooms.

IM-PRESS-IVE PETALS Some professional framers and florists can press and frame your flowers for you; and they look timeless in a classic glass frame, hanging on the wall or resting atop a side table. Or, if you’d like to get crafty yourself, simply select the blooms you’d like to press and spread them out wax paper. Then, pop the wax paper inside the pages of a heavy book, sandwiched between another piece of wax paper. Dry for seven to 10 days. Remember, you only have one shot at pressing so make sure the blooms are arranged as you want them in their final form.

SILICA SOLUTIONS

NEW FORM FLORA

DRY IT OUT

A solution used by professionals, silica gel removes moisture from flowers, preserving the shape and colour. Done professionally, this returns exceptional results – but you can also try a DIY version, too. Available at most craft stores, simply cover your flowers in the silica and leave in an airtight container for up to a week. Make sure to layer the silica so it doesn’t crush the petals!

Once flowers are dried or preserved with silica gel, combine bouquets and arrangements into an impressive new form which can be used as a wall hanging or table arrangement. Combining the flowers together helps your memories live on, while adding an exciting new and on-trend feature to your interior design scheme. Display in an architectural vase, or suspend from the ceiling.

There is no need to bid adieu to your bouquet and flower arrangements when you can tap into the floral trend that just keeps keeping on: dried flowers. Professionals can help you out with drying, as there are techniques and tricks like painting which add aesthetic appeal. However, if you want to DIY, simply hang your desired stems upside down (one by one is best) in a dry and warm area, such as a cupboard, and let dry for a week or longer.

Tree-mendous mill Timber; its versatility is unsurpassed and it is tasked with everything from keeping us warm in winter to forming the very framework from which we build our homes.

B

ut our love of timber is based on so much more than its aesthetic value. Of course, it looks good, but it’s also strong, long-lasting, durable and easy to work with. And, as a natural, renewable building material, it gets the sustainability tick as well. Supplying Macrocarpa, Oregon, Larch and other minor

species of timber, Loburn Sawmill is your local home for milled timber, firewood and gardening supplies, located at the end of Fletchers Road in Loburn, North Canterbury. Established in 2016 and run by fourth generation sawmiller, Matt Stuart, alongside his local team, the company specialises in beams, stress graded timber and landscaping supplies, with dry firewood also available. More recently, portable Larch cabins have proven a popular drawcard for the local business. Suitable for offices, sleepouts, additional bedrooms and Air BnBs, they look as good as they perform. The cabins can also be stained with coloured wood oil tints to suit any location or back drop. Strong and durable, the quality solid timber cabins are manufactured at the sawmill at 32 Fletchers Road, Loburn. Loburn Sawmill takes pride in supplying quality products in bulk, but also in its ability and drive to complete custom and one-off jobs for clients. Visit the website to check out the range of products and order firewood. Phone (03) 312 8963 or email sales@loburnsawmill.co.nz. www.loburnsawmill.co.nz.

A luxurious symbol of time

A defining feature of one of the world’s most luxurious cars has celebrated a notable milestone recently. Rolls Royce’s official emblem, the Spirit of Ecstasy, has turned 110.

he intellectual property of the design was registered on 6 February 1911, establishing what would go on to become an icon of luxury around the world. Almost unaltered throughout her long and storied life, the Spirit of Ecstasy graces the bonnet of every Rolls Royce motor car built at the home of Rolls Royce, Goodwood in the UK. The symbol was born after one of Britain’s motoring pioneers, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, commissioned a bonnet sculpture for his own Rolls Royce. Soon, others began following suit – much to the displeasure of Rolls Royce General Manager at the time Claude Johnson. So, he commissioned artist and illustrator, Charles Robinson Sykes to make an official version. Originally a statuesque 18cm tall, the Spirit of Ecstasy today stands a more petite 9.5cm high. In 2020, the Spirit of Ecstasy took on a new life and appearance as part of a wider update of the Rolls Royce brand. Known as The Expression, she appears ethereal and regal, yet now with a more contemporary, technological edge that reflects the company’s modern vision.

WORDS BEN SELBY

The Lexus LC500 Coupe caused quite a stir when it was launched. Now Lexus have chopped the roof, resulting in the LC500 Convertible. However, is it any better topless? After being on display at Lexus Urban Polo, Lexus New Zealand gave me the keys for 28 hours to find out.

he LC500 Convertible’s 5L V8 is shared with the RC F coupe and GS F saloon. It is also naturally aspirated with power rated at 351kW/540Nm. A 10-speed automatic box with paddles sends drive to the rear wheels. All in all, Lexus have kept it brilliantly simple. No turbos, no AWD, just a tonne of power and V8 thunder. Inside it is probably one of the most attractive places to sit of any car I’ve seen on sale. Lately, all the toys found in a car of this type can be found, even the epic 15-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, though the mousepad control is a bit vague at times. You quickly forget that the second you lower the roof, and press that starter button. The sweet sound of a naturally aspirated V8 engulfs your surroundings before settling to a soft burble at idle. Pointing the LC500’s nose to Akaroa, it shows itself to be a sublime tourer. In Comfort or Eco mode, you can devour kilometre after kilometre in almost electric quiet, and despite being so low to the ground, ride comfort is pretty much perfect. Every bump is soaked up and you sit low and far back, resulting in the perfect driving position. Rear visibility is so-so with the roof up, but most of the time you want that roof down, especially as you can raise and lower it at speeds of up to 50km/h.

Zero to 100km/h in five seconds isn’t rapid fire by today’s standards, but the LC500 Convertible isn’t about acceleration and top speed that can re-arrange your fillings. It’s more about big power under control. Many have made the mistake of regarding the LC500 as an out and out sports car. It isn’t, it’s a sporting tourer, but when you want to have some fun, the LC500 Convertible will still give shots of adrenaline the moment you give it stick. Plant boot and a butterfly valve in the exhaust opens up. Weighing in at a snip over twotonnes, the LC500 is no lightweight, but it can still dance the sports car dance really well. Downshifts at high RPM are accompanied by a crackle and boom from the exhaust like a far-off battlefield and despite not being super sharp, it isn’t long before you are giggling as you blast out of another corner with that V8 on full song. At $234,000, the LC500 Convertible is considerably less than its nearest rival, the new Aston Martin Vantage Roadster. All in all, the LC500 Convertible gets the blend of long-distance cruiser and back road blaster just right. This one is very good indeed.

It seems every day is the same story: “You scratched my alloys.” “No, you did it yourself.” Before the bickering of who did what to who turns nasty, these disputes can be resolved quickly and conveniently with the aid of Wheel Magician’s mobile wheel repair service.

hristchurch is often a minefield of high curbs and traffic islands, which if you are not careful, can instigate the sickening sound of alloys wheels scraping against them. Before you know it, you have parked closer than you thought and your alloys look somewhat worse than they were before. Rather than giving up your car for the day to have your alloys repaired, The Wheel Magician can come to you. They are able to operate anywhere in the greater Christchurch area, whether it

be your place of work, or your front door. The Wheel Magician removes the damaged wheel and brings it back as close to factory fresh as possible, with all finishing done onsite in a professional manner. All work is carried out with the utmost attention to detail and to the highest quality. So the next time the sound of metal on concrete makes your stomach churn, the wheel repair specialists from The Wheel Magician are only a phone call away on 022 658 2957 or 0800 537 233.

radiator, with electric cooling fan and electronic ignition for everyday usability, as well as a polished stainless steel exhaust system. This new exhaust system is dimensionally identical to the standard mild steel system but produces a slightly deeper tone and offers greater longevity. In addition to the centre console, the bonnet badge, clock face within the tachometer, fuel cap and chassis plate are all finished with a commemorative E-type 60 logo created by Jaguar Design, featuring the years 1961 to 2021. A light beech-rimmed steering wheel, as fitted to 1961 cars, features a 24-carat gold horn push. Every car is supplied with a tailor-made E-type 60 car cover, tool roll and jack storage bags to complete the enhancements and exemplify the attention to detail lavished on each vehicle. In summer 2022, the six customers and their guests will take part in the ultimate E-type pilgrimage, creating their own set of E-type memories in classic English style. Now, if someone could loan me one, there’s a loaf of bread in a supermarket in Timaru I need to go and get.

N

ow I am an Avengers fan. The 1961 English TV series, not the Marvel version, and that’s where you first see the E-type in the marketplace. Fast at 240km/h and sexy as hell, this isn’t your go to the supermarket to pick up a loaf of bread…or is it? Jaguar Classic has unveiled its first matched pair of E-type 60 Collection cars and revealed full specification details for the 12 expertly restored and sympathetically uprated 3.8-litre E-types built to celebrate 60 years of the iconic sports car. The E-type 60 Collection cars are restored and refined by the experts at Jaguar Classic in Coventry, and combine flawless quality and exceptional engineering know-how. The most significant mechanical upgrade is a specially developed five-speed manual gearbox which features synchromesh on all ratios, helical cut gears and a reinforced cast aluminium casing for enhanced reliability and greater durability as well as closer gear ratios and smoother changes. The 265bhp 3.8-litre sixcylinder XK engine benefits from an authentic 1961-style alloy

A SPACIOUS ODYSSEY The Honda Odyssey has been a dark horse in the Honda family in recent years, but as far as multi-purpose passenger vehicles (MPVs) go, it has always been a trendsetter.

T

he 2021 Odyssey comes with an array of kit as standard, including Honda’s sensing advanced safety suite, blind spot monitoring, cross traffic warning system, LED headlights and fog lights, smart entry, push button start and a new generation 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The Premium I tested also gets goodies like a hands-free power tailgate with kick sensor and gesture control power sliding

doors. The latter of these is pretty cool, as you can swipe your hand across this light bar to get the rear sliding doors to open or close. Inside, the Star Trek vibes continue, with the captain style chairs giving plenty of legroom and room to slob out. The Odyssey is something one would be more than happy to be driven in as opposed to driving. That said, it is still a refined drive. When you engage the 2.4-litre iVTEC

four-cylinder engine it provides a refined delivery of power and a very linear torque curve. On the Southern Motorway, that refinement continues by giving you a very sumptuous ride and road noise is kept at a minimum. The new Honda Odyssey is a delightful eight-seater MPV. It is also more car like in the way it drives. Basically, this boldly goes where no Odyssey has gone before.

The New 2021 Odyssey is here now available in selected colours.
