NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS
2013 - 2019
ecember is undeniably a month synonymous with spending quality time with friends, family and loved ones. And in a year which did its utmost to keep us all apart, there is no doubt we will all be appreciating these opportunities should we be lucky enough to have them. But, as with many things, it can be easier said than done. With all the joys the festive season brings, it all too often comes with its fair share of stress as we succumb to pressures to do it all: Attend all the events, buy all the presents, host all the guests, cook all the food - and the list goes on. In a bid to find some calm amongst the storm of the holiday period, we’ve compiled some tips throughout this issue to help you find your zen amidst the Christmas calamity. On page 43 we look at expert advice like the Mental Health Foundation’s Five Ways to Wellbeing (connect, give, take notice, keep learning, and be active), to the art of delegation, practising gratitude and getting out and about in Mother Nature. The therapeutic benefits of baking having been widely noted throughout 2020 - but if you’re sick of sourdough, we have Annabel Langbein’s delicious recipe for a festive panforte on page 45. Or, if you’re more into the equally soothing art of crafts, we’re helping you get creative for your Christmas table on page 60 and with gift wrapping on page 75. Perhaps it’s as simple as kicking your feet up with a cup of tea (or something stronger), reading a book or watching a cheesy Christmas movie. However you choose to take your time out this hectic month, just know you deserve it.

MUSICAL HOMECOMING
WORDS MORGAN TAIT PHOTOS KAREN INDERBITZEN-WALLER
Bic Runga is one of Canterbury’s finest entertainment exports. This summer she is set to headline two noteworthy local performances, Nostalgia Festival and Ōtautahi Together, a free concert to mark 10 years since the February 2011 earthquake. Metropol catches up with the talented musician ahead of a bumper summer season. You have two hometown performances coming up. What does it mean to you to perform in your hometown and, for the memorial, at such a meaningful occasion? “I always love performing in Christchurch, it’s always a really cool audience and I love playing in my hometown. I’m really looking forward to Nostalgia, I’ve heard it’s really great, and being asked to perform at the memorial is a huge honour for me, I was really humbled to be asked.”

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since the February 2011 earthquake. What does this milestone signify for you? “Ten years is a really long time, I found it hard to believe it’s been that long. Speaking to the [Christchurch City] Council about it, they want the concert to feel healing and positive and those kinds of things, because it is such a milestone for the city. “In many ways, it’s given Christchurch a chance to rebuild in a way that’s modern and interesting and really represents how Christchurch has changed.”
I always love performing in Christchurch, it’s always a really cool audience and I love playing in my hometown.

Your Christchurch performances are two of many for you including your own Spring Tour, Rhythm and Vines, and Summer Sounds. Is this a busier than normal summer season for you? “I haven’t played this much in summer in many years. A lot of international bands can’t come into New Zealand, so it’s kind of a big moment for New Zealand music this summer. A lot of bands are getting shows and festival slots which might have gone to internationals in the past. It’s such a good opportunity for New Zealand bands.”
You hold a special place in Cantabrians’ hearts – many people feel they have watched you grow up since your first album release at just 20. What has been happening for you off the stage recently? “Well, I am so middle aged now. My kids are five, seven and 13...and I am just looking forward to being a little old lady making music – which doesn’t feel like it will be too far off. Lockdown was a positive time for our family in lots of ways, it showed me what matters and what doesn’t; there was no sitting in traffic in Auckland trying to get my kids to school, but there was lots of time spent together and that’s what’s really important.”

CoCA was an important space to visit particularly through my teens, so I’ve obviously got really strong memories of it in that way...
n idea born out of lockdown, the new collaborative project is thanks in part to Canterbury expat, Kim Paton, whose love of art grew at CoCA and who is now the director of Objectspace. Kim says the collaboration pools resources across locations to bring more ambitious exhibitions to more people, by more artists. “The partnership will express a kind of marriage between CoCA’s focus and Objectspace’s discipline focus. Another key focus is really trying to think about how to engage and attract diverse audiences. I really believe in the democracy of a public gallery, as a public space for everyone. “With doing that work with Objectspace, we’ve learnt a huge amount and it’s a good footing to take that knowledge and be able to hit the ground running in Christchurch.” The partnership will see four seasons of exhibitions delivered across CoCA’s Mair and North Galleries and Objectspace’s Ockham and Chartwell Galleries. Highlights include major exhibition Hostile Architecture that will open simultaneously across the two venues in late 2021. “The partnership particularly
focuses on creating good and well-resourced opportunities for artists in the midst of not ideal conditions,” she says of the impact Covid-19 has had on the arts. “I think without a doubt the cultural sector is underfunded, so certainly the pressures Covid-19 has placed on that make these incredibly testing and challenging times for big and small institutions throughout the country.” Kim says CoCA was an important influence in her love of art as a teen which grew into her career. She holds a First Class Honours degree in Sculpture and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management, has held academic positions at Massey University and Wintec School of Media Arts, and has curated and written extensively on craft and contemporary art. “CoCA was an important space to visit particularly through my teens, so I’ve obviously got really strong memories of it in that way, but I also love the architecture of the building. “It’s a beautiful example of regional modernism and that is an incredibly exciting architectural space for exhibitions due to its scale and natural light.”

Loving Ellie’s belly WORDS JESS MURRAY
Summer is here, a time of year where pressure to look a certain way is amplified and when our inner saboteurs thrive. Twentynine-year-old Christchurch woman Ellie Haines has gained a notable online following for challenging these beauty standards. Metropol catches up with the hilariously honest and refreshingly real activist about self-love and redefining the status quo.
12 10 December, 2020 Metropol
In New Zealand, if you are size 12-plus you are plus size, and those words have such a bad stigma. There is nothing wrong with being plus size because in fact the average Kiwi women’s size is 12 to 14.
There’s been a big movement online surrounding bodypositivity, body-normativity and stopping body shaming. You call yourself “plus size” in your online bio – what does this movement mean to you? “In New Zealand, if you are size 12-plus you are plus size, and those words have such a bad stigma. There is nothing wrong with being plus size (or as I like to call it, extra luscious) because in fact the average Kiwi women’s size is 12 to 14. So, by putting that in my bio, I want to instantly break the barrier for anyone new that comes to my page to know I am proud of my size, and so should we all be.” Pop star, Lizzo, recently told Vogue body positivity has become “too commercialised and cool”. Can you talk a little bit about the commercialisation and hijacking of this message?
“There are so many people that will post about body positivity because it’s a trending hashtag but really don’t have self-love. Inspiring yes, but you can’t promote something if you don’t believe it. I would share photos of my body, say in togs, and women would comment saying I was ‘brave’, and it makes me sad that a woman standing there at a beach in togs is considered brave. Why is that brave? Because society has destroyed our thinking to make us believe we are not good enough as we are? One of my favourite quotes is, “If we started loving our bodies, imagine how many industries would be out of business” - and it really makes you think, doesn’t it?”
one on one
Your Instagram account started to document a weight loss journey. What inspired the transition to @lovingelliesbelly, a place to celebrate body positivity? “I was around 23 when I first started ‘Losing Ellie’s Belly’. At that point I had a ‘need’ to lose weight and thought that I would be happier when I did. I was spending several hours each day at the gym and sharing all the meals I was eating trying to, I guess, ‘inspire’ others to lose weight with me. I tried to make myself vomit and not eat. I was asked by an ex-boyfriend to delete the page as he could see my unhealthy addiction to it. I deleted the page - but then he dumped me! So I began the blog again, this time I was on a mission to ‘get a revenge body’, which I documented for a few months, until I went to the live premiere of . El t Embrace: The Documentary o lie ho be s and I met the director, Tarryn. o t hind o the scenes at a ph Afterwards in the car with my mum and sister in law I said, ‘I am changing what I do, I want to inspire people to love themselves as they are’. And I did exactly that! Here we are today with an amazing community of women and men who inspire, uplift each other, and let me be me.”
A lot of the above movement seems to be driven by younger generations. Have you noticed anything generational about your journey, or your supporters and critics? “I have actually found my biggest supporters are a few generations above. Many women my mum’s age say it’s helped them and how they wish they had someone back in their day to help inspire. They then recommend me to their daughters! I fear the younger generation actually have it harder. On Tik Tok, they are editing their faces with extreme beauty filters and living in this [false] reality that that is ‘beauty’. We’ve got a big fight ahead of us to ensure we protect the younger generation from what’s online!” Coming into summer we see a lot of “how to get a summer body”type messaging. What would your advice be for women at this time of year when facing the tide of body image-related content? “Oh gosh, isn’t it sad at this time of the year how much advertising goes on to achieve the ‘perfect bod’. When you already have the perfect body! That’s where that quote above comes in handy, right! Just wear the togs, or change from pants at the beach to shorts, or t-shirt to a singlet - enjoy summer and don’t let the worry of what you think others are thinking, stop you from living your life. My favourite quote is, “nobody is actually looking” - and it is so true because everyone is in their own lane, fighting their own body confidence issues at the beach or just simply having too gooda time, to even care what others are doing!” Metropol 10 December, 2020 13

A fairy tale Christmas Grab your godmother and touch up your tiara - Cinderella is coming to town! Magical transformations, heaps of hilarity, sparkling song and spectacular scenery is set to fill the stage of the Isaac Theatre Royal for nine shows this festive season.
F
rom December 15 to 20, the fairy godmother of all pantomimes, Cinderella, will deliver a new imagination of the enchanting rags-to-riches fairy tale – a timely gift for those who’ve missed out on live theatrical entertainment for much of the year. GMG Productions, the team behind hit international productions of Disney’s The Lion King, CATS, Singin’ in the Rain and more, is assembling New Zealand’s top talent to stage this timeless tale. New Zealand theatre royalty and star of the Hobbit trilogy, Mark Hadlow (The Hobbit series,
Meet the Feebles) will play The Baron, father to Cinderella and her supercilious step-sisters. Channelling their inner mean girl, Broadway and West End favourite Hayden Tee (Les Misérables, Matilda), will pair up with The Voice Australia finalist Caleb Jago Ward (We Will Rock You, Jesus Christ Superstar, The 10 Tenors) as the wickedly nasty Step Sisters. TV personality and well known What Now? host Erin Wells is preparing to slide into her glass slippers and dazzle audiences as Cinderella. After a public search, her Prince Charming has been announced as London-based Kiwi performer, J. R. Ballantyne. Musical direction will be under the baton of innovative maestro Andy Manning, while the cast will be under the spell of director and ingenious improviser Gregory Cooper whose writing and directing credits include That Bloody Woman, MAMIL and Rumpelstiltskin. The Isaac Theatre Royal is working harder than Cinders herself to make sure the theatre is spick and span for audiences expected to fill the auditorium. “After the year we’ve had, it will be wonderful to see so many smiling faces in the theatre experiencing pantomime on our stage for the first time,” says Bob Mangan, Isaac Theatre Royal CEO. Some big birthdays are being celebrated with some big sounds at Lansdown Homestead this month. The Tai Tapu venue will come alive with the sound of Beethoven in celebration of 170 years of Canterbury being settled, and 250 years since the composer was born.

Composing celebrations
he four hour-long daytime concerts on December 16 and 17 will celebrate the 170th anniversary of the settlement of Canterbury and the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven. This December, audiences can enjoy the music with four soloists from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in the spectacular Golden Room in Lansdown Homestead. On December 16, there
will be two concerts. At 11am, CSO concertmaster Dr Martin Riseley and Professor Terence Dennis will play Beethoven’s sonatas 7 and 10 for violin and piano. The performance is dedicated to the morning arrival at Lyttelton of the ship Charlotte Jane and the birth of the Canterbury settlement on December 16, 1850. At 2.30pm the same day, CSO violinist Cathy Irons and pianist Jeremy Woodside will present a delightful programme in a style familiar to early settlers. The two daytime concerts on December 17 feature music by Beethoven, exclusively. At 11am, Jonathan Tanner plays sonatas 5 and 8 for violin and piano with Woodside. At 2.30pm Tomas Hurnik plays sonatas for cello and piano with Woodside and the delightful variations on ‘Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen’. A Major success WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
She’s the self-professed “small woman with a big voice”, who went from a three-year-old country crooner to one of the highest accoladed performers this country has seen. But recognising the big voice coming from the small Malvina, it wasn’t long before her mother was pushing her into opera, despite a personal penchant for Broadway. “It was a career that happened
because I had the voice to do it in the first place, not because I wanted to be an opera singer,” says Dame Malvina. “I was kind of led along by the success of it and ended up in a place where I didn’t know I wanted to be, but I kept getting contracts and it became my life. “And in the finish, I loved it; the satisfaction of singing at that incredibly high-powered level, learning the required

I wanted to do something to make sure New Zealand students going abroad had a connection and didn’t feel the loneliness I had felt.” The Dame Malvina Major Foundation was launched in 1991 at Premier House in Wellington, an event hosted by then Prime Minister, Jim Bolger, and his wife, Joan. Almost three decades on, the foundation continues to provide support for talented young performing artists to achieve their potential, through financial assistance, performance opportunities and professional guidance, helping them to prepare for professional careers. Dame Malvina – who has been a Senior Fellow in Music at the University of Waikato since 2012 – isn’t resting on her laurels. “I’m supposed to be retired,” she laughs. “I keep saying they have to rename ‘retirement’. I’m certainly not sitting at home knitting or playing golf, though I do that, too! I’m very involved with youth; their future and progress, masterclasses and helping young people, attending performances, helping with the foundation.” She’s also busy working on plans to create a training school within the foundation that has been in the back of her mind for 20 years. “The idea is to enable the foundation to become a steppingstone to the world, so rather than sending young people to other parts of the world to train, doing it right here in New Zealand.” She’s also got 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren that play a big part in her life. “They’ve become hugely important to me and, as I get older, it’s even more important that I see them and show them my love.”

precision – that’s what stimulated me and I enjoyed that. Then after every mountain you climb you feel the rewards of reaching the top.” Just before she reached the very top, with the world at her feet, Dame Malvina Major walked away. A young Taranaki farmer, Winston Fleming, had won her heart and the couple married in 1964, before moving to England where their son Andrew was born. Dame Malvina was poised for an exceptional international career, but it was home soil and family life that she craved, and, by the turn of the century, she was home. “I was 15 years off the international scene and walked back in like it hadn’t happened. By then I had three children,” she says. “When I look back at my career, I think of the words of Frank Sinatra – I did it my way.” There have been plenty of highs throughout her career; she sang an outdoor concert at the pyramids in Egypt with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, she collaborated with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, she gave concerts to open and close the 2007 Rotary International Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah and she performed at the Covent Garden where she replaced Dame Joan Sutherland in Die Fledermaus. She has sung for kings, queens, princes, princesses and even an empress! But perhaps her proudest achievement is the foundation which bears her name. “Like a lot of things in my life, it happened by chance,” she laughs. Dame Malvina had been talking with the New Plymouth West Rotary Club about how lonely she was heading overseas to establish

The Pandemic Pivot
Celebrating small Canterbury businesses innovating in hard times
DEAN MORETON IN HIS WORKSHOP
Carving out change What do you do when all your business instantly stops? For one Christchurch business, Moko Pounamu, it meant completely changing business models and moving from a wholesaler of beautiful greenstone and bone carvings - to a retailer.
T
he greenstone and bone carving specialists have supplied beautiful New Zealand keepsakes for the country’s souvenir gift shops since the early ‘90s. When the Covid-19 pandemic saw the end of international tourism, founder Deane Moreton knew he had to act quickly to save
not just his business – but the jobs of his carvers, sales reps and distribution staff, too. “When the announcement was made that borders were closing, everything just stopped dead,” he says. “People stopped ordering; the orders just stopped. “Over lockdown I put a lot of
MOKO POUNAMU PRODUCTS
thought into what I was going to do next and how I was going to keep the business going for my staff for the next year or two until the tourists come back.” And so, a retail website and store were born. Moko Pounamu now sells directly to consumers online and at a bricks and mortar premises on Durham Street. “There is a lovely sense of patriotism in New Zealand at the moment to support New Zealand businesses and New Zealand-made products, and we have seen that people want a piece of pounamu to give to their family members. “It’s not just in New Zealand either, though. We have had
orders from Switzerland, Hungary, England, Australia and the US.” The shift has also meant the business has been able to employ more local carvers making more bespoke, one-off pieces. “We’ve always had production in New Zealand, but one thing we have found is there’s lots of talented carvers who don’t have their own marketing or sales channels, so now we can provide that for them while offering customers beautiful one-off designs.” Visit the Moko Pounamu retail store at 340 Durham Street, or online at www.mokopounamu.co.nz.

Q: I am thinking of selling my business in the future. What can I be doing now to prepare for sale?
A:
It is excellent to plan ahead for any sale. In this way you can ensure that the financial information for the business looks at its best by paying attention to maximising sales and minimising expenses. It makes a lot of sense to work with your professionals (accountants and solicitors) on this. Just like selling a home, it is also important to ensure that the premises you are operating from are well-presented and maintenance is up-to-date for the premises and any equipment used. All paperwork associated with any licensing or supply arrangements should also be in order, so it can be shown to prospective purchasers when the business comes to the market – again ensure that your professional advisors have input in this area.

beauty brand which gives a damn BEHIND THE
Hannah Duder is the Christchurch-based co-founder and CEO of Indigo and Iris, an ethical beauty brand which donates 50 percent of profits to restoring sight to people in the Pacific Islands and to empowering New Zealand women to achieve financial independence. Metropol catches up with Hannah about what drives her in business. because it is companies and business people who have only been concentrating on their profits that have caused some of the biggest social and environmental issues our world faces today. The hardest lesson I’ve had to learn in business was you can do anything, but you can’t do everything. You must focus and be lean and not try to do too many things at once. The best advice I’ve been given was you need to focus on your own personal self to be truly successful in life. If you are broken you can’t fix the world. Not in those exact words, but my mentor and an investor in my business, Rob Woodward, tell me this all the time. I try to approach my work with heart because it will mean that if my heart is in it I will do what I love but also make decisions with heart. That means considering the planet and the people on it when making any decision in my company.
The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome as a woman in business was confidence and imposter syndrome. I luckily overcame this while I was at university through having female role models that I could look up to and people who made me realise my age and gender did not need to hold me back from anything. My business philosophy is you must think about the impact your business is having on the world
I’m currently reading and enjoying the book, Her Way by Jaqui Thomas, a recent release from a New Zealand author. It is stories of women in New Zealand succeeding in business and doing so with love. I also love listening to podcasts After Work Drinks, How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, Whatever I Want by FlexMami and Fletch, Vaughan and Megan on ZM. My advice for other women coming in my field is: Make sure you care about what you are doing. It seems so obvious and has been said but it is really hard to keep going if you don’t care.
You can do anything, but you can’t do everything. You must focus and be lean and not try to do too many things at once.

Take a leaf out of London Fashion Week’s book and try some stick-on gems or foil to accompany or replace eye shadow. The March shows saw model after model embellished with the materials. Makeup artist Deja Smith told Bustle gold foil is an emerging trend, and can be achieved with gold leaf purchased from a craft store.
All that glitters is not gold – but it could well be some embellished holiday beauty. The party season is nothing if not an excuse to have some fun, makeup included. Glitter and sparkles have had a makeup moment in a year that needed some brightening up, so we’ve compiled three ways you can trial the trend this holiday season.
GLITTER BOMBSHELL Forget individual flecks of the sparkly stuff and use a glitter gel pencil or shadow to add a literal glint to your eyelids. If statement shades are not for you, more subtle holographic pigments can be found in neutral shades and with lower glitter ratios. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna’s Liquid Diamond Bomb Glitter Highlighter comes highly recommended.
NAIL IT If facial sparkle is a bit too out there, consider an iridescent manicure instead. Adorn your hands with some shimmering lacquer to bring some festive spirit to any outfit. Try a simple clear lacquer with added glitter, or the plethora of coloured options, too. To tone it down even more, add just one glittery feature nail to your DIY or salon set.

One of the first things you notice about someone is their smile. Being a focal point of the face, it draws many an eye. That’s why for a lot of people losing confidence in their grin, the move to dentures is a saving grace, or more appropriately, saving face. Metropol catches up with Richard Greenlees from Lovebite, to get the downlow on dentures.
Absolutely not! I work closely with each patient to reclaim their smile. Each case is unique, combining skill, experience, knowledge, and revolutionary techniques, I can create beautiful bespoke dentures that reflect each patient’s individuality.
What services to you offer?
A full denture service, this includes full dentures, metal partial dentures, implant supported dentures and firsttime immediate dentures. In addition to dentures I also do crown and bridge work, veneers, and implant work in conjunction with likeminded dental surgeons.
My face appears to have lost volume, can this be corrected?
This is possible, the structure and shape of a patient’s face can be transformed. To attain this top level of treatment (Oral Lift) and for best results I need the patient to work with me. Some people have had their teeth taken out when they were young, over time bone loss can happen (losing volume in the face) this is what I work on to recreate a more youthful appearance. This is a treatment that requires patience as it is a big change and when a patient first sees the transformation it can be a big surprise for them but once they look at the whole picture i.e the improvement to facial structure they are really happy. This Oral Lift is not for all people but more the discerning patient who is looking for a transformation and something special, a change and a lift.

Face the freckles You’re not imagining it, freckles have become a trending beauty look recently. While once these cute lil’ spots were covered, they are now showcased (and faux-cased) loud and proud. We all know these wee guys have a tendency to present themselves after some sun exposure – but please, don’t let your skin guard down in the name of freckle fashion. Instead, here’s expert tips on how to protect your freckle-prone skin this summer. Sunscreen - This is a nonnegotiable daily skincare product. Choose a UVA/UVB 50+ for everyday wear. Niacinamide – A form of vitamin B3, this is a pigment inhibitor which helps to reduce the formation of pigment. Vitamin C - Not only does vit C help to target pigment and increase light protection, it can also stimulate collagen and elastin and fight free radicals.

Sustainable Style
It will always be on-trend to recycle your clothing – it adds a sense of sustainability to such a fast-paced and ever-changing market. Kelly Dobby of Mini Moocher agrees and thinks it’s great people are starting to understand the amount of clothing that goes to landfill.

the constant flow of recycled clothing means new garments are coming in every day and given a second chance on the runway of life. When deciding what pieces are right for the store, Kelly
believes, “some pieces of clothing are timeless.” “I base my stock on what I know my customers will love and on the merits of each piece rather than the brand although I especially have a passion for New Zealand-designed and made clothing which is also abundant in the store.” So, what’s trending this summer? “In-store the trends seem to be bright and colourful prints, summer dresses that are easy to wear matched with sneakers or dressed up for an event/evening occasion.” Mini Moocher has moved into a fresh new store at 300b Lincoln Road. www.facebook.com/mini.moocher

Meet Marion This recently launched online jewellery boutique is Marion McKellow’s latest creative venture back into an industry she left almost six years ago.
M
arion moved to North Canterbury to renovate an old farmhouse, however, her passion for Sterling silver, semiprecious stone and baroque pearls never died. “I am happy to be back in such a creative field that I find inspiring,” she says. Marion’s passion for the craft grew from a love of antique jewellery, and evolved into her love of and eye for sourcing stones and gems. With her new collection, some of which is online now, her range includes simple and statement Sterling silver necklaces, pendants, earrings, bracelets and rings, as well as pearl necklaces and pendants, and semi-precious stones set in necklaces and rings. She also has beautiful one-off pieces she intends to retail at her own events or by appointment. With over 20 years in the jewellery industry Marion has established many wonderful
relationships with silversmiths, gemologists and pearl suppliers which she says are really valuable to her. As her new venture progresses, Marion plans to continue handselecting everything herself and intends to become more involved with design, too.

Merry Stress-free Christmas
It’s a time of cheer and festivity. But unfortunately, the holiday period can come with its fair share of stress, too. From pressure to attend events, spend money on gifts and time with loved ones to organising the perfect day and having guests to stay: The festive season can too easily come with a hefty mental load. Give yourself the gift of peace of mind this Christmas with Metropol’s round up of tips from the experts. FIVE (FESTIVE) WAYS TO WELLBEING
THE GIFT OF DELEGATION
FATHER CHRISTMAS, MOTHER NATURE
The Mental Health Foundation advises Kiwis to keep its Five Ways to Wellbeing in mind: Connect, give, take notice, keep learning, and be active. Especially the give bit. “Try to keep in mind that the true gift of the season is our presence, not our presents,” advises the foundation. “Giving our time, our words and our presence makes others feel great, but it also lifts our own mood and makes us feel our lives have more meaning.”
This year, deck the halls with delegation. Don’t give into out-dated expectations to do it all. If you can, buy pre-made or delivered menu items and invite guests to help by not only bringing their own contribution on the day, but also with preparations and clean-up. Kids and grandkids can also get in on the action with small jobs. Big family? Why not introduce a spending limit, or pull names from a hat to get one nice gift each.
Getting out in nature is another science-backed mindfulness hack endorsed by the Mental Health Foundation - and what better time to do so than during a Kiwi summer! Head to the beach, on a nature walk or even just out into your backyard. And, why not combine this mindful activity with other proven pick-me-ups by doing so with friends and family, exercise or relaxing with a book, podcast or music?
GRATITUDE CHECK Cultivating gratitude – where you focus on what’s good in your life – is widely acknowledged by psychologists as a powerful mental healthiness tool. Evidence from too many studies and experts to list here shows those who regularly practice counting their blessings are happier and less depressed. Start writing down a few things each day you’re thankful for this festive season, and watch the stress melt away. Check out www.begreat.co.nz for resources and tips. Metropol 10 December, 2020 43
cuisine Festive feasting WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
Christmas; it’s almost inextricably connected to food. And, while there will no doubt be the traditional ham, fruitcake and mini mince pies on the table this year, the festive season is also an opportunity to mix things up. We’ve pulled together our favourite ways to do just that.
W
hen it comes to Christmas feasting, not everything has to be elaborate. Why not make simple pleasures just a little bit more special? Roasted carrots – boring! Lemon-maple roasted carrots, on the other hand – divine! Roast chicken and vegetables too can get a flavourful twist by adding a simple mustard-tarragon sauce and garnishing with summery pomegranite. Hasselback potatoes look fantastic, right? They’re also incredibly simple. Why not try your hand at mini hasselback potatoes with chive butter for a clever looking appetiser that is so tasty it isn’t likely to just be relegated to festive feasting!
When you’re done with that, give hasselback butternut squash with maple-brown butter sauce a go. It’s a unique spin on a classic vege, but the addition of mustard, sweet maple and aromatic brown butter transforms an otherwise boring side dish into something exquisite. Take your mashed potatoes to the next level by loading them up! Crispy smashed potatoes with cheese and bacon crumb is a great way to level up a plain vegetable. And why not roast your kumara with coriander this year and drizzle it with a mix of yoghurt and lemon juice to give it a tangy finish? It will feel like all your Christmases have come at once.
Tastes so good you don’t need sauce!

Gluten Free | Keto & Low Carb Nitrate-free Bacon Preservative-free sausages and meat products
4/1004 Ferry Road, Ferrymead. Ph 03 384 2226
Ready in 1 ¼ hours
Serves 20
1 cup skin-on almonds 1 cup hazelnuts 21⁄2 cups dried fruit, such as mixed peel, raisins, chopped dried figs, dried cranberries or dried cherries 2⁄3 cup plain flour or gluten-free flour 2 tbsp cocoa 1 tsp cinnamon 1⁄2 cup honey 1⁄2 cup sugar 60g (2 1⁄4 oz) dark chocolate, chopped Icing sugar, to dust
Vegan
I always don a clean pair of dishwashing gloves to mix this dense festive Italian fruit cake, as it’s very heavy to mix with a spoon and you need to work fast so the toffee mixture doesn’t set before it’s mixed through the fruit and nuts. The recipe scales up easily and you can play around with different types of fruit and nuts as long as you keep the ratios consistent.
Method 1.
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) fanbake. Thoroughly grease a 20cm (8in) diameter springform cake tin or line it with baking paper. Line a shallow roasting dish with baking paper for easy clean-up. Spread almonds and hazelnuts out at either end of prepared roasting dish and roast until nuts are fragrant and skins are splitting on hazelnuts (12 to 15 minutes). Cool. Place hazlenuts in a clean tea towel and rub between your hands to remove most of the loose skins (don’t worry if they don’t all come off). Transfer nuts to a large bowl, add dried fruit, flour, cocoa and cinnamon, and stir to combine.
2.
Boil honey and sugar in a pot until mixture reaches ‘soft ball’ stage. You’ll know it’s ready when it reaches 112 to 116°C (234 to 241°F) on a candy thermometer, or when a small drop of mixture dropped into a glass of cold water forms a soft ball when rolled between your fingers.
3.
Remove from heat, add chocolate and stir until it is melted and the mixture is smooth. Pour into dry ingredients and, working quickly, mix with gloved hands or a very strong wooden spoon until combined. Press evenly into prepared cake tin and bake until set (about 35 minutes). Remove from tin while still warm. When cool, dust liberally with icing sugar.

Trail-er blazer Over the last few years, there has been a growth in the popularity of food trailers. And it’s easy to see why: Low start-up costs, no ties to bricks and mortar leases in these uncertain times - and the freedom of being able to take your meals on wheels anywhere you go.
f you have been umming and ahhing about taking the leap to a succulent side hustle or fulltime foodie venture, Peter Lord of The Affordable Food Trailer Company knows what it takes to get your gastronomical idea off the ground. Trailers vary from 2.3- to 5-metres long and come in a kaleidoscope of colours and array of styles - some of which are exclusive to Peter’s fleet. If you are wanting to add that little bit of personalisation – customisation can often be done at no extra cost. The trailers come with hot and cold-water systems, a full stainless-steel fitout, cash drawer, rangehood with splashback, fridge and freezer. The company can also recommend and supervise installation of any extra equipment required. Not from Christchurch? That is okay! The trailers can be supplied across the country. Start on the trail to your next adventure. For more information contact Peter on 021 025 94977 or via peterlord@live.com, or online.

Big moves, little café Covid-19 has been the unavoidable buzzword of 2020, especially so for hospitality hotshots like Cameron Gordon at Little Rive Café and store. Metropol caught up with the café owner to see what a “Covid-19 summer” will entail.
O
ur summer days are generally dominated with international travellers
who aren’t coming this year, so it will be interesting to see whether domestic travel will
offset this. We are entering an unknown chapter... and that’s a bit exciting,” he says.

But it seems as if the unknown chapter was a perfect place in the novel to make some adjustments to the café, something that has been on the cards for over four years. With renovations already underway, the interior will be spruced up with new tables, seating, artwork, plants and paint. So, why make the short drive out there? Only 35-minutes from Christchurch, the café is a perfect halfway stop on the way to Akaroa and surrounding bays – it is even short enough to make a round trip for lunch. Add a walk, visit to the beach or trek along the rail trail and you’ve got yourself a great day out. The ever-increasing range of homemade keto low carb options are what’s helping put the little café on the map. With popular items such as filled keto bagels and keto cheesecake selling out most days of the week. For more information, contact the café and store at littleriverstore@xtra.co.nz.

Luxurious lakeside lunching
A stop at this lakeside restaurant, bar and venue is a gateway to experience the best of local produce, wines and hospitality. As the name suggests, The Lake House is appropriately situated right on top of Lake Hood - making it the perfect lakeside lunching spot this summer.
M
ultiple private dining rooms can cater for 12 to 30 people, making the venue suited for extended family or friend get togethers. Or for something a bit more special, like a wedding, you can hire out the whole venue. Walk-ins are also welcome – no bookings necessary. But why walk in when you can pull up in style via boat? For foodie fanatics, the restaurant has just started a new low and slow American barbecue menu and experience. Aptly named, Smoke, the carnivore’s dream is an additional experience to The Lake House menu and catering options, and features
12-hour smoked cuts of brisket, pork and beef ribs and Texas jerk chicken. Smoke’s slow-cooked American barbecue menu has already proven so popular it is opening at a second location in Rolleston this February. Overlooking the picturesque lake, The Lake House is a destination in itself or an idyllic stop while exploring central Canterbury. A courtesy shuttle bus can collect and drop off guests in Ashburton. Book via the website, phone (03) 302 6064 or email info@lakehouselakehood. co.nz. Or if you’re more of the spontaneous type just pop on in. www.lakehouselakehood.co.nz

home HANGING ARRANGEMENTS
Christmas table WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Tableware has been stealing our homeware hearts in 2020, so what better meal to embrace the trend than a Christmas Day feast. Often one of the few meals of the year enjoyed with so many loved ones, Christmas mealtimes embody the beauty of food to bring people together. Enhance that mood with an exquisite tablescape. Here’s our inspiration round-up.
Like the stunning design pictured by BoConcept, a hanging arrangement adds a wow-factor to your celebratory meal – and leaves more room on the table. Fashion a hanging display from pine branches and cones for a traditional, wreath-inspired take, or mix in modernity with toi toi, eucalyptus or dried flowers. The addition of hanging decorations, like here, brings a definitive Christmassy touch.
TRADITION CALLS If you love the charm of classical Christmas style, embrace greens, reds and golds. A white tablecloth can set the scene, overlaid with table runners, linen napkins and polished cutlery. Crystal, (or crystal-look) glassware and candle holders will add a glint of occasion, especially with the lit candles themselves. Employ pine, or pine-look, greenery adorned with ribbons, mini-cones and the odd ornament.
NATURE’S CALLING
BOCONCEPT
Stylists and interior magazines are showcasing contemporary takes on this traditional day which include more pared back table themes. We’re seeing natural, terracotta and forest green coloured linens alongside jute placemats and ceramic serve ware. Festive colours are being delivered with gold cutlery and candlesticks, and baubles used as napkin ties. Dried flowers endure, but perhaps with a pop of fresh red for some floral festivity.

Mates making a splash Both are from farming backgrounds, who became best mates when they met at boarding school, aged ten. Their friendship continued through to adulthood, and when the opportunity arose to begin a business venture together, James Wightman and Mathew Pooley grasped it and launched Freedom Pools last November.
he points of difference about Freedom Pools is they come with a 35-year warranty; the fibreglass has strong seismic resistance; it’s gel coat protection exterior creates a barrier that’s completely impervious to water, and because it’s easy to work with, a pool can be installed in one week,” says Mathew. This indomitable duo come with skills aplenty and aren’t afraid of hard work, evidenced by James’ background in engineering within the dairy industry, and Mathew’s former career as a farm manager for Ngāi Tahu farming. With Mathew overseeing operations and installations, and James handling sales and marketing, clients are assured the truly twoman band are with them every step of the way, from the initial site visit to pool completion. “Honesty, transparency and providing a great product is everything to us. Emails and texts are convenient, but to really understand what clients want, a face-to-face consultation can never be underestimated,” says James. This rich warm dining space is a sophisticated take on a classic citrus. Rather than use the fresh, light colours normally associated with a citrus-inspired scheme, this one opts for a richer, full-bodied look instead.
Despite deep orange being such a striking colour, it is surprisingly adaptable to a variety of interior styles. Here, it has a clean architectural look but change out some accessories, colour accents and furniture for different looks:

The sideboard they sit on is painted in Resene Swiss Caramel, the chair is in Resene Moccasin and the pendant light is in Resene Spanish White. The room is fresh and appealing but escapes being too pretty and light. It’s a citrus scheme that will transcend the seasons and not be locked into summer or spring. Curtain c INSIDE CANTERBURY’S CURTAIN BANK
The Christchurch-based Curtain Bank, one of the flagship offerings of Community Energy Action Charitable Trust (CEA) has been helping to keep Cantabrians (and more recently West Coasters) healthier for over 25 years. The first of its kind in New Zealand, it has provided over 6000 homes with good quality, recycled window coverings - as well as insulation and energy advice. Metropol catches up with the charity as it works through pandemic-induced higher needs for its services. 64 10 December, 2020 Metropol
call Curtaining is expensive, and not everyone can afford it. So instead of throwing good curtains away, they can be donated and re-used.
uring uncertain times the need in the community increases. CEA and the Curtain Bank are looking towards autumn and winter with a view of ensuring as many in the community are warm, dry and healthy as possible. “Windows are one of the weakest links when it comes to energy efficiency in a home,” says Caroline Shone, Chief Executive of CEA. More heat can be lost through uncovered single glazed windows than through an uninsulated wall.” And considering how many homes throughout Canterbury have single glazed windows, this is a lot of cold, damp and in the worst cases, mouldy, homes. In New Zealand, it is estimated a third of homes are considered unhealthy, a figure which costs the country $145 million per year and results in 35,000 nights in hospital, according to a University of Otago study. Those national figures are reflected in the Canterbury communities serviced by the CEA and Curtain Bank, which is Kaikoura to Ashburton, and across to the West Coast. “In the aftermath of both the Canterbury and the North Canterbury earthquakes, CEA services, including the Curtain Bank, helped a large number of households who had earthquake damaged properties. We worked alongside councils in Christchurch, Waimakariri, Hurunui, Selwyn, Kaikoura and even Marlborough during that period,” says Caroline. “Now our attention is to support families in the community through another challenging period: the Covid-19 pandemic. We want to let people know about CEA and the Curtain Bank and everything else we do. “Curtaining is expensive, and not everyone can afford it. So instead of throwing good curtains away, they can be donated and reused. That doesn’t just help other families but also the environment by reducing what goes to landfill. “We know that the Curtain Bank has saved many tens of thousands of kilos from going to landfill, conserving energy and reducing emissions,” says Caroline. Once received, donated curtains are cleaned and stored at the bank until an application is received. If the Curtain Bank has the size required, curtains can be given out straight away. Where required
curtains can be resized and another layer can be added to create a double layer. The Curtain Bank has also helped set up others like it across New Zealand. Several years ago the Curtain Bank added a mobile service to get out to the more rural areas and to help those unable to get to the Christchurch premises. However, it cost tens of thousands of dollars a year to keep the Curtain Bank running. Aside CEA’s own funding, the Curtain Bank is supported by individuals, soft furnishing stores (donating excess stock) and a few key sponsors including NZ Lottery Grants, the Christchurch Casino and for over ten years, its long-time supporter and funder, Genesis Energy. Genesis Energy’s Community Investment & School-gen Manager Jenny Burke says CEA has done an outstanding job in reaching out to people in the community who need their support. “As a major energy generator and retailer we believe in doing our part to help those people in the community who struggle to make their homes energy efficient. “Working with CEA enables us to support those people in our communities who, for whatever reason, can’t afford insulated curtains. Hopefully with a warmer and drier home these families will suffer fewer respiratory illnesses – keeping kids in school and the elderly out of hospital.” CEA is a charitable trust that also works as a trusted and established service provider for the government’s Warmer Kiwi Homes programme through EECA, for subsidised insulation and heating for low income homeowners. “We also provide non-subsidised insulation,” says Caroline. “Any surplus money made from the non-subsidised insulation goes back into our services such as the Curtain Bank to help those that need them.” • You too can help! By either donating to CEA’s Givealitte page, making direct donations or dropping off your good quality used curtains, longer than 1.8m, free of mould and not ripped or faded. See CEA’s website below for making donations in other ways and dropping off curtains.

Christmas makes scents WORDS TRACEY EDWARDES
It’s that extra sensory month when taste buds rejoice in the season, eyes are bedazzled with tinsel-adorned trademarks, and ears are jiggle-belling to the jolliest day of the year. Our sense of smell too is in festive frenzy. Sniffing seasonal reminders will awaken happy memories and raise our spirits - this Christmas especially.
XMAS FLOWER X-FACTOR Christmas lilies give a room, an instant Kiwi-Christmas smell. Flowering on cue in December, with blooms held high in snowy white, the pretty scent wafts headily through the air.
EXOTIC OILS
CHRISTMASY KITCHEN
DIVINE PINE
AOTEAROA AROMA
Mysterious Frankincense and Myrrh both have origins from three very wise men. These therapeutic essential oils added to diffusers or even bath water, create a very mesmerising merry mood.
Sprinkle cinnamon, anise, ginger, cardamom and allspice, and try the traditional orange pokedwith-cloves for Santascented decorations. Whiffs of brandy and rum are a big yuletide nod.
The most magical Christmas scent of all is the smell of a real pine Christmas tree. Pine essential oil does the trick too. With antiseptic, and healing benefits, pine also invigorates the mind.
Coconut oil, sea salt and sand, and a sizzling BBQ combined with these more clichéd Northern Hemisphere Christmas scents, is a joyous olfactory overload that we cannot overdo!

2021 in colour WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
Colour has long upheld the ability to soothe, to comfort, to uplift and even to enliven, making its use in the home critical to the psychology of a space. As we prepare to wave goodbye to 2020 and welcome in a new year, we look to the colours that we will be embracing in 2021.

NATURAL BEAUTY We’re all about natural beauty as we optimistically eye-up 2021 and all it has to offer for the home. With a collective longing for earthly connection stemming from increasing technology use, we can expect to see plenty of natural tones within the home, from soft, earthy neutrals and muted greens to gentle mauve-greys. Top picks include turmeric, terracotta, and touches of tan and ochre.
SWEET LIKE CHOCOLATE Beige and taupe are quickly becoming the new goto neutrals for 2021, as we crave the comfort of chocolate. Offering the ultimate escapism, there’s little to frown about when it comes to brown. From beige and burnt umber to chestnut and cocoa, this composite colour was a favoured colour choice in the ‘70s and it has stood its ground.
SHADES OF SUSTAINABILITY It’s not surprising green is the colour most closely associated with envy, because when it comes to the colours of 2021, the green-eyed monster in us is running rampant. With a general shift towards sustainability, plantbased materials, healthy homes and conscious consumerism, any shade of green goes, but expect to see plenty of soft, neutral grey-greens such as sage and olive.

SUNNY SIDE UP If you’re all about the bold and the beautiful, never fear! It’s not all greyed out, muted tones in 2021. The colour experts are clear… no hue expresses hope and reassurance more than yellow. It is, after all, the colour of sunshine, sunflowers and happiness and is an easy way to bring fun and energy to enliven and invigorate your space.

FREEDOM
Al fresco Christmas WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Our fashion-forward friends in the Northern Hemisphere have long shown us a holiday season dusted in snow and fireside festivities. But downunder, we know a summer Christmas is a time to embrace the outdoors with our loved ones. So here’s our tips for al fresco entertaining this holiday season.
1.
2.
3.
FAIRYTALE CHRISTMAS
PEACEFUL PICNIC
INSIDE OUTSIDE
While Christmas light displays around the country have been scaled back or dimmed altogether this pandemic year, there is no reason you can’t create some lit up magic at your place. String up some fairy lights, lanterns (and the odd citronella candle) to create some fairytale Christmas atmosphere. Whether that means decorating your tent poles, pergola, or shade sail – soft lighting creates ambience as you entertain into the night.
Shirk the traditional Christmas day meal altogether by packing up a picnic and hitting your favourite beach, river, lake or park. Set up blankets, cushions and some makeshift low tables (crates, trays and chilly bins should do the trick) and settle in for the day. Or, go all out with tables, chairs and awnings. Opt for portable feasting options like a leg of ham, madeat-home salads and platters. Capitalise on public barbecue facilities, or BYO.
There’s no reason why you can’t recreate your interior holiday aesthetic, outdoors, like this inspired set-up by Freedom, pictured. Increasingly indoor-styled outdoor areas have been centre stage in 2020, as attention turned to renovations and remodels in the places we spent so much of our time. Louvre systems create easy access to the sunshine, and protection from the elements while exterior furnishing emulates those indoors, from dining and lounging suites to outdoor art, rugs and décor. So, if the weather allows, just set up your festive indoors, out.

Holiday blues Just because our overseas escapades have been taken off the calendar for 2020, does not mean we have to deprive ourselves of all things European. In fact, Catherine Matthews of French Blue has a beautiful selection of homewares and furnishings from the continent.
n Northern Hemisphere newness, aptly named A Taste of Paris cooking products have snuck onto the shelves just in time for the gifting season. A few notable mentions being the love elixir - a wild strawberry French syrup - and olive oil with black truffle and balsamic. But the drawcard of the range is French organic extra virgin olive oil that is made to resemble a Chanel No. 5 bottle – talk about kitchen couture. A selection of other French goodies are available such as the ever-popular French country diary for 2021, hand creams and soap, and Espadrij shoes. There is also an array of limited-edition silk and cotton scarves from Amsterdam, Mexican Tibor and glassware, and gorgeous candles, diffusers and room sprays. Top off any purchase by supporting local with an exclusive Christmas card, featuring an Angel designed by It’s Lucy Speaking. This little European escape is located at 9A Normans Road in Elmwood, where even just a quick browse transports you overseas.

his year, why not pass on non-recycled paper altogether and opt for more sustainable gift adornments. A favourite idea is to use fabric – or even tea towels like the Citta ones pictured – to swaddle the present. Purchase fabric off cuts from your local fabric or second-hand store, pop it in the wash, and get creative. If the fabric doesn’t lend itself to being tied, use yarn or pegs to hold it in place. For gift tags, explore items around home which can be repurposed: Cardboard with a lick of paint, more fabric with cardboard glued underneath, or a coffee sack from your local coffee shop. After all, sustainability is the gift which, quite literally, keeps on giving.

Edible summer garden WORDS MORGAN TAIT
The cold is (meant to be) behind us, which means in the garden, it’s time to look forward. Look forward to our homegrown fruit and vegetables, that is. From basil to beetroot, lettuce and zucchini – it’s all happening in the fruit and veggie patch this December.
SOW WHAT?
PASSION FOR FRUIT
The end of the cold means it’s finally time to sow veges from seed. In particular, basil, beans, beetroot, carrots, corn, cucumbers, lettuce, parsnip, pumpkin, radish and zucchini can all be popped straight into the soil as seeds.
If you are a Kiwi gardener in possession of a warm, sunny fence – you must consider planting it with passionfruit. It’s also a great time to plant subtropical fruit like natal plums and tamarillos – don’t forget compost and sheep pellets, or to keep well-watered.
MULCH ADO All summer gardeners know how important it is to conserve water during these hot months, as we all must do our part. So gardening becomes smarter. Enter mulch, it keeps the soil damp for nowater days.
FLOWER POWER If you prefer petals over produce, or want to produce something ornamental alongside your edibles, sow seeds of ageratum, cosmos, cyclamen, rudbeckia, salpiglossis, and zinnia. Or, visit your local garden centre for some already-flowering options.
CITRUS SEASON Prepare now for citrus season by planting citrus trees throughout summer. Or, add instant tang to your summer menu by planting an already flowering, large-grade lemon or lime tree. Your 5pm G&T will thank you for it.
BUG OFF Don’t sacrifice the fruits of your labour by letting the bugs, or poor care, compromise your crops. There’s plenty of organic options for keeping summer slimeys, like caterpillars, or fungus at bay – as well as nets to dissuade birds. Water – and mulch – will prevent fruit drop.

Passive energy, exceptional design For the owners of this home built with passive house principles in mind, energy efficiency came before beautiful design. However, a fortuitous introduction to Susanne Schade of Architecta ensured they received not only a home that achieved a 1.27 rating on the Blower Door Test, but is stunningly beautiful, and cost effective as well.
O
n entering the house, a striking timber feature provides some separation of the kitchen from the open-plan living area. Leading you through
the house, the timber feature continues along the staircase and upstairs to the gallery destined to become a library. Energy efficient features
include double-glazed and argonfilled PVC windows with Low E glass that are recessed into the thermal layer of the walls, 140 LVL timber framing that is highly insulated and is accompanied by a Pro Clima airtight layer and an insulated 45mm service cavity. Air movement and heating is managed by a decentralised heat recovery and ventilation system. Corrugated metal cladding changes from vertical to horizontal on gable ends, and combined with plywood at the front gable, creates an interesting and welcoming façade. Aaron Stewart Builders brought the plans to life, and with
it their history of constructing energy efficient homes. “I can only say positive things about Aaron and his team,” says Susanne. “They absolutely embraced the concepts in the design, and went above and beyond to get the airtight layer to its maximum.” “We have extensive experience and knowledge in building architectural homes that are constructed using passive principles,” says Director Aaron Stewart. “Energy efficient building is an absolute passion for us and our team has worked hard to become leaders in this field.” “Susanne designed the home to have consistent internal temperatures and the integration of European design principles with energy efficient systems has resulted in a really well-considered project,” says Aaron.

Hillside haven This Richmond Hill home is a dream realised for its owners who had lived through postearthquake flooding at their previous site. Designers of this dream are AO Architecture, and Michael John and his team are awardwinners for this design that is totally at one with its surroundings.
I
t is a unique site, and we took our cues from the Port Hills,” says Michael. The grass is often browned off which generated the idea of using Corten steel, with its burnt brown finish. The
jagged outcrops above the Architectural Designers New Zealand house in grey basalt colour were picked up in the board formed concrete, while the dark cedar and roofing were used as a silhouette
back drop to the Corten and concrete features. “A pitched form was desired even though this was harder to create due to planning height restrictions, however this did play well with the jagged hills surrounding the site,” says Michael. “The gables also were utilised to their full potential forming vaulted interior spaces in the living areas and a study above the garage.” Exposure to the wind was a major consideration. This led to the house being U-shaped, which provides an outdoor area that enjoys the views, but is protected from the elements. WD Build took great pleasure in the architectural styling of the home, says founder Mitchell James.
“It was an interesting job with its cedar cladding, Corten steel, and great detailing such as on the seamless garage door, the cast concrete chimney and boxed Corten features around the windows,” he says. “Michael’s plans were easy to follow, clean with detailed specifications.” Architectural builders since the 1970s, WD Build is a small family-owned business on its third generation “We are hands on, oneon-one with our clients, and have a great network of experienced, skilled subcontractors. We enjoy keeping up with building innovations, and on every job, small or large, we bring our emphasis on quality.”

Functionality was key to the brief: The kitchen needed to be large enough to be

used by multiple occupants simultaneously, with several access points and easy access to the outdoor kitchen and BBQ area. Entering the home illustrates a generosity of space with a double height, light filled entry where shadows are cast from the timber internal and aluminum external louvred screens. Sustainability runs through the design with detailing for energy efficiency. and Director Patrick Coughlan says: “It was great to be part of this project from the very start, and helping the owners through the complete journey meant we were able to provide a more client focussed home that meets their current and future needs.” Patrick’s project management systems combine with the personal touch, which leads to a total living solution. For the team, the build reinforced the importance of creating a partnership approach. The result is a home with a great open plan flow - high doorways give the spaces a sense of connection when the doors are open, and this holds true not only internally but from inside to outside as well.

MAZD POWERING UP THE
WORDS BEN SELBY
Mazda’s Skyactiv-X powertrain has been making headlines all over the motoring world. There is a good reason for this, as it has boldly gone where no internal combustion engine has gone before. We had a play with the new Mazda CX-30 Takami thanks to Blackwells Mazda.
T
he CX-30 is one of two models in Mazda’s range to benefit from Skyactiv-X, the other being the Mazda3 hatch. So Skyactiv-X, what exactly is it? Well, the 2L

four-cylinder petrol engine is worldfirst in commercial engine design, combining petrol power with all the benefits of a compression ignition you would find in a diesel. So you
get high-end power, and all the lowdown torque, resulting in the best of both petrol and diesel engines in one petrol unit. Let’s break it down a bit further.
DA
While that is a bit to take in, one can safely say you notice the fruits of Mazda’s labour when one is at the helm. Moving off and you quickly notice the more immediate delivery of 224Nm of torque. From idle to high in the rev range, the Skyactiv-X works its magic, providing you with crisp throttle response and top end power. At cruising speed, there is no droning to speak of and if you keep it in the sweet spot of around 1800rpm around town, it’s almost electric quiet. Plus, with Mazda’s G-Vectoring steering on hand, you can slice and dice through traffic too. Also, being the range topping Takami, the CX-30 gets all the niceties like heated leather seats, premium Bose stereo, 360-degrees reversing camera, heated steering wheel, and power tailgate. Also, everything you touch and operate has a very satisfying click to it. The CX-30 Takami Skyactiv-X can be yours for $54,990 plus ORC, making it $4000 more than the regular petrol CX-30 Limited. However, once you get a chance to experience just how clever this revolutionary new engine is, you would be hard pressed to go back to a regular petrol engine. If this is the future evolution of internal combustion, then count us in.

Mazda’s new Spark Plug Controlled Compression Injection, or SPCCI, allows the 2L Skyactiv-X petrol engine to get the right amount of fuel and air mixture into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke of each cylinder. Petrol is then injected directly around the spark plug, creating a bigger bang. This results in a richer and more immediate surge of power when the spark fires after combining the air and petrol, instead of the gradual build up you would get with a conventional petrol engine. Skyactiv-X models like the CX-30 are also a mild hybrid thanks to Mazda’s new M Hybrid system. This works by storing up electricity from the starter motor generator when you lift off the throttle. It then sends the electric drive to wherever it works best, meaning less stress on the petrol engine. Put these two ground-breaking systems together, and you get a petrol car which produces less carbon emissions, 135g/km, and greater open road efficiency. There is more power under the bonnet too, with the CX-30 Takami Skyactiv-X producing 132kW of grunt, 18kW more than the regular petrol CX-30. Fuel consumption is less too, at a claimed 6L/100km.

Style personified WORDS NICHOLAS HENARE PHOTOGRAPHY JACK PREBBLE MEDIA.
When it comes to style, BMW have been pulling my heart strings for years. It was my second car and there is just something special about every new design model that comes out. This year is seeing a plethora of change, a shift personified in the 2 Series Gran CoupĂŠ.

I
t is bold in character, stylish and refined all at the same time. I picked up the M 235i xDrive from Christchurch BMW and straight away noticed its agility, even in inner city driving. M Performance means this car has a bit of bling: M sport brakes work stunningly, M sport seating in Dakota leather adds fit and comfort, and M sport steering handles with ease. It really is the finer things. Not to mention, 0 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds on an 8-speed automatic, four-cylinder engine. And a running torque at 45Nm. I called it my little rocket ship, because that’s what it felt like driving up to Mount Somers for the weekend. The open road was sublime in sport mode. You feel like you’re in a race car and that can be a problem as you look at the heads-up display and realise you should perhaps be going a bit slower.
But you get lost in it; the smooth, effortless drive of an amazing performance vehicle. After being couped up with Covid-19, getting on the road with the Coupé is the ultimate driving experience. With a cost of $91,400 its performance felt closer to $150,000. I had it in the Seaside Blue hue, which was not everyone’s cup of tea but when we photographed it, you realise that that colour really does pop. But there are also nine other colours to choose from, just in case. A phone app allows the car to automatically unlock when you exit or enter a prescribed unlocking zone. Which may sound a bit silly, but this was one of my top features. Did I lock the car? Who cares?! I never have to worry about that again! Lastly, the panoramic sunroof makes it feel wide and open in the cabin. A stunning option to test

I can be accused of being a bit of an automotive snob. Most of the time I’m reviewing high-powered style machines where we are looking at 0 to 100km/h in under six seconds. This is not one of those reviews.
A
s I sighed at the spec sheet that stated 58Kw and 102Nm torque as David Boyd from Mitsubishi on Moorhouse Avenue sat in the passenger seat giving me “highlights” I drifted back to the memory of the Mitsubishi Mirage of my youth. It has been around for many a decade and I still remember the iconic shape of the late ‘80s. Introduce the new Mirage 2020 and what do we have? The new facelift gives it a change from our last model, but the biggest changes lays in its rear bumper and front grill. The 7-inch touch screen display is very functional and to be honest, I was

Putting the car in care
quite surprised by the amount of bang you get for buck on this. Lane departure system and revision camera, 1.2L, 15-inch alloys and Apple Car Play with quite a comprehensive interaction. I mean, I’m sitting in a car that comes in under $22,000 right? This has got systems cars twice its price struggle for. Hmmm, time to take the test drive. The thing that really blew me away is I spent days driving it around the city and then took it to Hanmer Springs for the weekend. When it got near empty, I filled it up – for $60! That can’t be right, but it was. This is not the usual rip-snorter high specification luxury car that I am used to driving and it is not aimed at me. This is the great car that is reliable, cost effective and easy to drive, protecting you with features designed to keep others safe as well. This is the car you want your kids to drive, your grandma or someone you want to look after. The protection and systems are built to look after people who want to get from A to B with little effort and cost. It’s got enough room to do most things, but this is not an SUV or luxury sports car. This is a car, plain and simple. For $21,990 plus on roads you’ve got a not just good, but a great, little get around vehicle. My car snobbery put aside, this isn’t a car for me - this is a car for someone you care for.

SUPRA SPEEDY,
SUPRA SLIC WORDS BEN SELBY
The Toyota GR Supra has been the subject of plenty of gushing reviews by the motoring press since its launch in 2019. There is a good reason for this mind you, it is a properly fantastic sports car and continuation of the Supra name which laid dormant within Toyota’s family for far too long. Now, within a year of being on sale, Toyota have powered up the GR Supra even more for 2021. We went to Hampton Downs Raceway to have a play.

T
he GR Supra has been the spearhead of Toyota and Toyota Gazoo Racing’s efforts to reinvigorate the performance arm of the brand. Power from the GR Supra’s 3.0L twin scroll turbo straight six has been increased by 35kW, bringing the power figures up to 285kW. This is the result of manifold redesign and relocation of those meaty twin turbos. Torque figures stay the same at 500Nm, but a piston redesign means you get it all from idle right up to the north side of 5000rpm. Add this together, along with the eight speed ZF automatic gearbox and kerb wight of 1570kg, and the GR Supra will reach the New Zealand speed limit in 4.1 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than before. Little else has changed over the outgoing car, the GR Supra still comes with Active Differential, Variable Ratio Steering, Active Sound Control, Performance brakes package with red callipers and Toyota’s Safety Sense Package. However, a GR Supra Limited edition is available in a rather tasty looking Horizon Blue paint scheme. The standard car is now $98,990, whereas the Limited Edition is the same $99,990 as the outgoing car. So, out onto a rain-soaked Hampton Downs we went, first in the outgoing model, then in the new car, and boy can you tell the difference between the two. That extra 35kW becomes apparent once you give it what for. From a low 1650rpm right to the redline, the next corner arrives much sooner than first expected. Up shifts from the ZF auto box are still very slick, and that turbo six pot gives you a sweetsounding bellow when shifting down. Despite the wet weather, we were able to see the far side of
180km/h before standing on those performance brakes and turning in. The steering is still so communicative and when the back comes out to play, which it often did during our wet laps, you can catch it again with relative ease. The new GR Supra is not a hard car to drive fast, and very easy to handle when you get near the limit. So, has extra grunt made the Toyota GR Supra better? You bet. Can’t wait to test it off track on Canterbury roads in the new year.

Locked and loaded The way we keep our cars locked up, secure, and still in our driveway has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Two men who know this better than most are Roger Barriball and Richard Nind, who established Access Lock Specialists Ltd in 2007. At that time, laser cut transponder keys and keyless
entry into vehicles were just starting to take off, but so
many cars were yet to fully embrace the technology.
Today, just about every new car comes with these kinds of keys; where the car simply recognises you have your key with you to be start the car. However, while this technology makes fumbling in our pockets for our car keys a thing of the past, it still can’t prevent keys being lost or stolen. Access Lock Specialists know transponder keys and smart key fobs better than anyone and can help if you require a new smart key or spare for your car. Able to programme and chip the required key to match your individual car’s on-board computer, Richard and Roger also recommend having two key fobs handy. Operating from their showroom and workshop at 170 Waterloo Road, Hornby, the team will come to your rescue, not just for automotive keys, but also the supply, service and installation of safes as well as home and commercial locks.
