Hello Metropol people, I thought it was going to be at least a decade before I had a chance to express my perspective to you all in this editorial spot. I was honoured when Lynda put forward the idea to put a “face to the name”. But while this is my first… it will also be my last; a Metropol swansong if you will. The last 22 months have been a riveting rollercoaster, luckily, I was tall enough to ride. I was able to live out my Carrie Bradshaw fantasy (without the terrible personality traits) and use my words for good. Nevertheless, a new and exciting opportunity knocked on my door in the form of a position with a PR agency in Brisbane, Australia. Bring on better weather! A big thank you to the team at Metropol who took me in with open arms, my

A skilful storyteller Actor and director Martine Baanvinger takes centre stage in Lyttelton next month in a new one-woman play ‘Aperture.’
D
ramaLAB founder Baanvinger, who wrote and starred in the awardwinning play Solitude, showcases the life and work of Ans Westra, a New Zealand Arts Foundation Icon photographer. In 1957, Westra emigrated from the Netherlands to New Zealand and began to take photos of her new homeland. Fascinated by Maori culture in particular, she created an intimate and uniquely historical documentation of Maori life
which led to a successful career capturing the essence of the people of Aotearoa. DramaLAB’s visually stunning and intimate portrait focuses on Westra’s childhood in the Netherlands, her immigration journey to New Zealand and the start of her photography career in the 1960s. Her first publications, including the controversial ‘Washday at the pa’, offered insight into the Maori way of life in rural Aotearoa at a time of urbanisation.

Making music together Christchurch businessman Martin Brennan has teamed up with Nelson Tasman songbird Aly Cook to bring music to Aotearoa and Australia.
M
artin first met Aly just over two years ago, at a Sharon O’Neill at the Hornby
Club in Christchurch. Aly was the promoter for Sharon’s tour and singing backing vocals in
the band. Now she’s managing director of his company Tasman Records Ltd and the two of them are brightening up the airwaves. The company’s first release is a licensed title, Keeping the Light on - The Best of Gerry Beckley. Gerry is one third of super group America, which brought us songs like Sister Golden Hair, I Need You, Horse with No Name, Muskrat Love and You Can Do Magic, to name just a few. His new album has five previously unreleased tracks, including the single (I’m Your)

Exciting times are ahead for one of Canterbury’s well-loved television personalities, Petra Bagust.
C
anterbury holds a special place in her heart. Petra attended the University of Canterbury, where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995. “I will be forever connected to Christchurch, because lots of my favourite humans live here, and I fortunately get to visit them because of my work throughout the year,” she enthuses. Petra’s first TV gig was hosting five nights a week at local music station, Cry TV. After graduating from uni, she made the move to national TV with the cult youth programme - Ice TV. The next 18 years cemented her as a TV3 personality, with numerous primetime programmes, including What’s Really in Our Food and Christmas in the Park. A change of networks then saw her copresenting TVNZ’s Breakfast for two years, alongside Corin Dann. Petra has been married to freelance cameraman Hamish Wilson since 2000 and the couple have three teenagers. “To be honest, parenting three teenagers is the biggest learning journey,” she says, “They surprise and teach me things all the time.” Alongside parenting, Petra spends much of her time these days as a media industry commentator and being a chaplain as part of the Media Chaplaincy NZ team. “To help with this role, I’m currently also doing postgraduate study in chaplaincy and loving it. It’s very mind and heart expanding - I just wish I didn’t
leave my assignments to the last minute! A habit I formed in Christchurch as a university student.” Petra’s role as a Media Chaplain involves supporting, encouraging and drinking coffee with a range of people working in radio, TV and journalism. “The media is a high-pressure fast-paced industry to work in, where you can find yourself caught in a storm of controversy, covering heart-breaking stories, and so much more. Sometimes just sitting down with someone who ‘gets it’ is healing.” Her soon-to-be launched project is a new podcast called Grey Areas, in which Petra “interviews wonderful women and men about challenges that growing older creates. It’s an honest, raw podcast where we chat about things most people are too scared to talk about in public. I’ve always had a limited filter to what’s appropriate or not to discuss, so we just talk about it all,” says Petra, with a knowing smile. “Topics such as menopause, sexual intimacy with the same partner of 20 years, grief and loss, all of which we tackle with kindness and curiosity.” “I love to see people move towards wholeness. My new podcast isn’t about solving global issues it’s about relating one-on-one with others on their personal journey. vents Manager at Spectrum Lighting and Sound, Sheena has been leading one of the teams responsible for several aspects of Ōtautahi-Christchurch’s first ever Matariki light and fireworks display! Proudly produced by Christchurch City Council, Matariki fireworks spectacular will deliver a cracker pyrotechnic display set to sweet-as Kiwi hits, thanks to Sheena and a huge team of sound and lighting technicians from several local companies. Canterbury has some of the best lighting technicians in the world, she says, and being involved in such a project post-Covid-19 has been awesome.
The Tirama Mai Matariki fireworks spectacular runs from 6pm to 7.30pm at the New Brighton Pier, Christchurch. Postponement date is Sunday July 11.

A lighting designer with more than 30 years’ experience, Sheena learnt her craft at the Court Theatre, where she worked for 16 years, lighting more than 100 productions and touring extensively with Mark Hadlow for his one man show Sensitive New Age Guy. She left the Court in 2004 to become Events Technical Coordinator for the Christchurch City Council, project managing Classical Sparks, Anthony Harper Lawyers Summer Theatre, Feb 22 Memorial, ANZAC Day and creating and producing popular lighting event Botanic D’lights. A move to Spectrum followed three years ago, having been impressed with the passion and problem solving expertise displayed by the team while she was their client. of lighting and our beautiful Botanic Gardens.” A driving force behind such events is the opportunity to showcase the talent of local lighting companies who are world class in what they conceive, says Sheena. “Tirama Mai is such a showcase event. Spectrum is providing multiple installations and we have enjoyed creating the stories through lighting to fit in with the theme of the event. We are doing some dancing fountains in the old fountain side in Scott Park, as well as creating some bees!” she explains. “My background in theatre and in lighting is all about telling a story and I feel it is very important to tell and celebrate our New Zealand stories, so I am excited to contribute to that.”

ome countries make the process of becoming eco-friendly easier for their citizens than other countries do, and according to new research just released, New Zealand ranks among the world’s top 20 most caring countries. Nature group Outforia delved into World Bank data to reveal which nations are taking the most sustainable measures overall, ranking New Zealand 13th in the world. Heading the list are Sweden, Norway and Finland, followed by Iceland, Andorra, Palau, Suriname, Bhutan, Canada and the Central African Republic to make up the top 10. Research showed seven countries around the world whose entire population is exposed to levels of air pollution that fall far below the World Health Organisation’s guidelines and New Zealand is one of these countries. Alongside Brunei, Canada, Estonia, Finland, the Maldives, and Palau, New Zealand scored an impressive zero percent air pollution rating. With 80.08 percent of renewable energy being produced and used, New Zealand is arguably one of the “greenest” countries in the world. The research looked into CO2 emissions, air pollution, forest land, agricultural land, renewable energy, and threatened species of mammals, birds, and fish to reveal not only the overall most ‘caring countries’, but the locations with the lowest CO2 emissions, the lowest air pollution rates, the most renewable energy and much more. The research concluded that greener countries have better outdoor knowledge and understand how to effectively use their natural geography and resources to create a more efficient and green nation.

Head to the moon Christchurch will host the inaugural South Island Moon Festival from September 30 to October 2.

he city’s newest cultural event is set to illuminate it with a vibrant display of art, lanterns, performances and food this spring. The Moon Festival is a traditional time of celebration in China and many East Asian communities, where families gather to watch the full moon, eat moon cakes and recite moon poems. The inaugural festival will feature an exciting and diverse range of local artistic talent, with a focus on both traditional and
contemporary cultures of Christchurch. Audiences will enjoy spectacular lantern displays, food and beverage providers and free outdoor entertainment for the whole family. The festival will be run by Strut & Fret NZ, the team behind the revitalisation of the World Buskers Festival, which famously takes over the streets of Christchurch each summer. The festival programme will be announced on August 17.

Celebrating 30 years Three special concerts for music lovers round out the Christchurch City Choir’s 30th anniversary year programme.

ot to be missed on July 3 is the Voices Found concert with soloist Adrian Lowe at St Andrew’s College Chapel in Normans Rd. Celebrating works by female composers from throughout the centuries, it will be the choir’s first performance in the chapel and its first with Lowe. Then on October 9, the choir will perform A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms at Christchurch Town Hall with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, two international soloists and recipients of Peter Barton Student Scholarships.
Three decades after its formation, the choir is going strong, says Music Director and Conductor Dr John Linker. “We are also seeking new members, especially basses and tenors,” he says, adding that prospective members could attend some rehearsals before auditioning. Board member Joanna Dodgshun is particularly excited about October’s Brahms concert. “It is a major choral work which usually forms an important part of the repertoire of a symphonic chorus such as our choir,” she explains. “It is exciting,

challenging in parts, and is a fabulous work to sing.” John agrees, adding that the work is also offered as a memorial for those who died in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. The final concert for the year will be Handel’s Messiah on December 4 at Christchurch Town Hall. says practice manager, Lauren Harvey. “If you suspect an animal has eaten bait then you need to act immediately; get them to a vet so they can be administered an emetic or antidote.” Some baits are more toxic than others, and some have antidotes. Common anticoagulant rodenticides that there are antidotes available for include brodifacoum, dopaquinone, warfarin and bromadiolone, she says. Another key factor in saving a pet is to make them vomit within an hour of ingesting poisons. Symptoms of toxicity are delayed by about four to
five days and include lethargy, pale gums, and a moist cough. Investing in a post Covid-19 world Covid-19 has impacted on investing and not necessarily in the ways we might have expected.
ance Dawber-Ashley of Saturn Advice says, in March 2020 when it became clear Covid-19 was likely to affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide, share markets did what they usually do in times of uncertainty and fell sharply. “In the United States, markets fell more than 30 percent by March 23. The drop in our local share market was similar.” However, no one could have predicted what was to follow; a strong rebound fueled by supportive government policies. Fast forward to June 2021 and he says many international share markets are at or near record highs, and interest rates at or near record lows. “A surprise to many is the strong rise in house prices over the last 15 months to record levels. In March 2020, some commentators predicted a significant fall in house prices due to the ‘enforced recession’. Low interest rates, expat Kiwis returning home and reduced housing supply means the opposite is the case.” So where to from here? he asks. “Investors who prefer the safety of term deposits are hurting from low interest rates. Today, a six-month bank term deposit is likely to pay interest at around 0.8 percent per annum. Just three years ago, the rates would have been close to four times higher. “The bad news is this situation is unlikely to materially change any time soon.”
So, what are investors supposed to do? “Firstly, we don’t suggest trying to time markets. Those investors who cashed up in February/ March 2020 fearing the worst from Covid-19 likely paid a heavy price. Secondly, create an investment strategy consistent with your financial goals and stick to it. Thirdly, ensure your investments are diversified across assets and asset classes. Finally, the reality for conservative investors is returns from fixed interest investments are likely to be modest for the foreseeable future. That creates a dilemma to either stick with a conservative approach or to take additional risk in expectation of better returns.” “Vast amounts of often contradictory investment information is available to the public which can be confusing and challenging to make sense of. “This is where a financial adviser can help. What are the ‘breast’ reduction options? 1. Breast Reduction by Tumescent Liposuction (BRTL) performed by dermatological surgeons such as Dr Bellaney. 2. Breast reduction by surgery (SBR) typically performed by general or plastic surgeons.
Why opt for the alternative (BRTL) option over surgery? It is able to give a significant reduction and comes with a much lower complication rate than traditional SBR. It’s also a form of keyhole surgery so leaves very little visible scars.
Is there an age restriction? Over the age of 40 most women will have at least 40-60 percent or more of their breast tissue composed of fat and significant reduction by BRTL is almost always possible. That said, they have found that younger women’s breasts are still
able to be reduced by BRTL but the technique’s success is definitely less predictable in women under 40. Most practitioners proficient in this technique believe that BRTL is the procedure of choice for most women seeking a breast reduction – particularly if they are over 40 years old.
What is the recovery time like?
Apart from heavy lifting, most normal duties can be resumed within a week for most people. There is usually a ‘bruise like’ discomfort for 2-3 weeks after the procedure and temporary lumpiness of the breast can persist for 2-3 months. followed by four years in London, gaining experience in a strong international market, and working for a hair, fashion and styling agency. This in turn helped her accomplish her true passion of acquiring a booking role within a model/talent agency and stood her in good stead when she returned to New Zealand and bought Portfolio. Mel says that modelling can be all about timing and developing into a person’s maturity, such as looks, height, size, body shape etc. It is also important that models have a good understanding of the local market, know what the mainstream briefings are and their suitability for the market. Her advice for aspiring talent is to ensure they sign with an agency that is passionate about what it does, and to work with some wellestablished clients within their portfolio. “That an agency has a strong reputation and has been in the industry for a substantial amount of time with credentials to back it up is important. And management needs an in-depth knowledge of the industry and a good business understanding; after all they are representing you,” she adds. “An agency and model should work together as a team to succeed.” Her agency offers ‘Confidence/Deportment/ Modelling Workshops’ on a regular basis for children, teens and young adults (male and female). If you had to choose between good physical health or good cognitive function, which would it be?
I
t may surprise you to learn that more people fear losing their mind than their physical health, yet according to the Research & Development Director at American-based ChivaSom, Dr Jason Culp, there are five simple ways to help avoid this. A naturopath doctor, his focus on primary care is intended to help treat and prevent chronic or acute diseases using a combination of conventional medicines and traditional holistic philosophies. “Those of us who have witnessed a loved one slip away through Alzheimer’s disease, understand too well about the major detriment that cognitive decline has on all aspects of health and wellbeing,” he says. “Although we cannot be certain of the future, the great news is there are simple and practical ways of promoting your brain health and cognitive function. Additionally, there are specific lifestyle practices that can help to ‘grow your brain’ (or at least form new nerves and neural connections in the brain),” he says. This phenomenon is known as “neurogenesis” (neuro meaning nerve, and genesis create new), and Dr Culp says there are five simple and effective ways to promote brain health and help preserve cognitive function. They are:
A diet that is high in unsaturated fats, such as Omega 3, 6, and 9, can help promote the production of new neurons in the brain. Omega fats can be found in salmon, tuna, raw walnuts, cold-pressed olive oil, and freshly-ground flax seeds. Aerobic activity has been shown to elevate moods and improve cognition as well. Research studies have shown that 30 minutes per day of sustained, aerobic activity has a positive impact on nerve growth and brain function. Adequate sleep (six to eight hours uninterrupted) is crucial for learning retention by promoting the growth of new nerve connections. This process is called “neuroplasticity” and takes place each time we learn a new skill or habit. Non-dominant hand exercises (neurobics) such as brushing your teeth, drinking your coffee, or messaging on the phone, can help you form new nerve connections, and improve emotional health and impulse control. Playing an instrument has been found to develop greater connectivity between different brain regions in musicians. The combination of movements with sounds and visual patterns has led to enhanced neuroplasticity as well.

So popular are hazy beers, that a new category had to be created for them at the recent 2021 New World Beer & Cider Awards. Featuring flavours of tropical fruit with a typically creamy body and sweet finish, these brews are flying out of craft and established brewery taps countrywide.
Hard seltzer, a fermented and carbonated fruitbased alcohol, has taken the world by storm in the past year. Some are made from wine, beer or cider bases, while others springboard from vodka. Ingredients 800g of venison medallions, cubed 2 quinces (peeled and quartered) ½ lemon 1 cinnamon quill 2 cloves 2 cups of pinot noir (or red wine) Mash 4 medium potatoes 1 tsp freshly grated horseradish (or ½ tsp pre-grated horseradish) 1 clove of cooked garlic 50g butter 1/3 cup of milk 1 pinch nutmeg Salt & white pepper Sauce 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp butter Salt 2 shallots, minced 1 clove garlic, minced ¼ cup brown sugar 1 cup pinot noir ½ cup of quince syrup from cooking liquid 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 cup of strong venison stock

Cook the potatoes until soft. Peel them and mash in a bowl. Add the horseradish and garlic. Mix with the butter and milk and season with nutmeg, salt and white pepper.

Season the venison cubes with pepper and sear in a hot pan with oil and butter, for a couple of minutes.

When venison is cooked medium rare, put aside in a warm place and season with salt. Add butter to the pan and cook the shallots and garlic until soft.

Add the sugar and the remaining wet ingredients and reduce to the desired flavour. Beat cold butter into the sauce so that it becomes an emulsion.

Huawei? Yes way While it may conjure up concerns about privacy for some, there’s one thing for sure – the biggest electronics company on the planet, Huawei, produces a quality product. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott looks at its latest fitness band.
W
hen it comes to battery life, Huawei absolutely wipe the floor with the competition. Most smartwatches, even the most expensive, get two to five days out of a full charge. Huawei boast two weeks and having been a Huawei GT watch user for a couple of years, I can confirm that I still get 10 to 14 days usage. Its latest smartwatch/fitness band, the Huawei Band 6 brings a heap of mid-level features at a very attractive entry-level price. The sleek rectangular design weighs in at 18g and measures 43 x 25.4 x 10.99mm so it sits well on most wrists – especially with the silicone rubber strap – which is one of the most comfortable I’ve encountered. The Band 6 is water resistant to 50m, so don’t worry if you forget you’re wearing it and jump in the shower or pool. Being at the more affordable end of the market ($129), there are some
trade-offs when it comes to features. There is no built-in GPS tracking, so you’ll need your phone handy if you want to track those long runs or cycles. You also can’t answer calls (you can decline only) or reply to messages in any way. Despite those relatively minor limitations, the Band 6 has everything else you’d ever need, including 96 different workouts and sleep/stress/ menstrual and blood oxygen monitors. Simply download the Huawei Health app to your phone (Android or iOS) and you are introduced to a world of information about yourself that you didn’t even realise you wanted to know. You can also choose between a range of watch faces to suit your tastes and what information you want to see. As a footnote, I hear ‘Huawei’ get pronounced differently by so many. It’s actually quite straight forward – make sure you pronounce the ‘H’ – as in ‘Hwaa way’.
Pros: Almost fully featured at an entry-level price. Huge battery life. Extremely comfortable.
Cons: May lack a couple of features for the high-end user.

This was helped enormously by the support of our long term mentor Stephen Collins. His believed strongly in playing life forward and backing the underdogs (which is what we definitely were). His belief in us and what we could accomplish sustained us in the darkest of moments, and we can never thank him enough.
Our initial start saw us take on a company with only five consultants (the majority having walked out the door when we walked in), and only 17 listings between us. With more debt than we could imagine but a deeply held desire to succeed, we worked to build the business and our profiles. There were four partners then (as there is again now) and although two have since moved on to other ventures, I am grateful to both of them for their commitment over those early years. To be brutally honest with you – what I do remember from those years is a bit of a blur. Work and people, people and work, more people and more work. Debts paid off, larger debts gained, sleepless nights, and the birth of my first child, who recently has turned 21. Success followed, albeit quietly at first but it soon became loudly acknowledged within the Harcourts brand nationally as well as internationally. Over the last financial year (April 1, 2020 – March 31, 2021) the Harcourts gold team wrote $1,016,266,237 worth of property sales and listed 1,422 properties. We are a company of 140 and have an incredible business comprised of four offices, an outstanding international team, a property management division, and a bespoke home staging company.
We grow people, we give back and
we’re still writing our own individual story. It’s a story that no bar graph or set of statistics could convey. It’s deep, personal and the essence of who our ownership team of John, Chris, Cameron and I are. Thank you for letting me share some of it with you.

Feed the native birds Setting up a feeding station in your garden is one way to attract native birds, and also to ensure our precious feathered friends have enough to eat during the harsher months. New Zealand Forest and Bird encourages residents to supplement the feed of native birds – many of which eat nectar, fruit, and insects – by giving them their own feeding tables. Getting used to eating at the table might take some birds a while to learn, but it is important

to ensure that any feeding stations are topped up regularly in winter and early spring when natural food sources are more limited. Keep an eye out in the garden for kererū (wood pigeon), korimako (bellbird), kōtare (kingfisher), pīwakawaka
If you want to attract only native birds then do not use seeds and grain. They attract introduced birds that out-compete natives. Avoid bread as well, and milk. The latter cannot be digested by birds and causes stomach upsets. Fermented dairy products such as cheese are okay. Never put out honey or honey/water for birds. Birds love it, so do bees, so this practice can spread bee diseases. Cooked oats or porridge are not a good idea as they can harden around a bird’s beak, says Forest and Bird. Uncooked oats are okay.

Native birds that you are likely to attract to your garden prefer to eat fruit, nectar, insects, and foliage. The kererū (wood pigeon) prefers to eat the fruit and foliage of native plants, while others like different food. One way to build up a food supply for them is to leave the leaves on the ground when they fall off plants and shrubs. Over time, a thick layer of mulch will build up. This boosts insect populations, which provides a great food source for insectivorous birds. Try hammering some nails into a board and securing pieces of fruit to the table. Half-cut oranges, apples, and pears can attract tauhou, korimako and tūī.

Aerospace momentum
Most of you will have seen or heard reports from the Climate Change Commission’s recommendations to Government to get New Zealand to carbon zero by 2050.
With an estimated $360 billion value, the global aerospace sector represents a huge opportunity for our region.
The recommendations summarise neatly into more EV, more public transport, less gas, fewer sheep, and better dairying practices, but let’s not forget about innovation and its role as a high impact weapon against pending climate disaster. We must galvanise our Kiwi innovators, entrepreneurs, and visionaries to individually and collectively develop innovative solutions to the myriad problems that must be resolved if we are to avoid disaster. Backed by Orion Group, Ministry of Awesome and Ara Ake, the Orion Energy Accelerator aims to identify and support our most promising energy innovations and help move towards a carbon neutral future. The
programme offers two startup grants worth a combined $25,000 plus potential equity investment from Orion Group. We’ve hit our first milestone with 11 startups from across New Zealand joining the accelerator this month. From electric tractors to powering the energy poor, each of the startup ventures are innovations that will help achieve our carbon neutral future. We can’t think of any bigger problem to solve than climate change. We are so grateful for the leadership that Orion Group has demonstrated alongside Ara Ake in looking to innovation for potential pathways for our low emission future.
Canterbury has the perfect geography and airspace for testing aircraft and autonomous prototypes, and is home to the best in engineering, tech and precision component manufacturing. Aerospace and future transport is one of our key growth sectors – we’re working with iwi, industry, tertiaries, and research bodies to build on the region’s geographic advantages and existing talent pool to ensure sustainable growth for our economy, environment and community. The world is taking notice. NASA has recently partnered with New Zealand under the Artemis Accords to guide the safe and sustainable exploration of space and to explicitly seek international collaboration and outsourcing of key technology solutions. This will enable start-ups, such as Kea Aerospace which
is developing an unmanned high-altitude solar aircraft, to make the most of international connections and information sharing. Closer to home, the Crown and Katōrete Ltd are progressing a joint venture, Project Tāwhaki, which will see Kaitōrete Spit protected and rejuvenated and the development of aerospace R&D facilities, including a possible launch facility. This will enable high-growth businesses such as Dawn Aerospace, which has just received a major funding boost from New Zealand’s largest tech investment firm, to continue its growth and expansion from here in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The momentum of the aerospace and future transport sector is building here in Waitaha Canterbury and we’re here for it.

Ongoing shovel projects
Illuminating our city
In addition to the Anchor Projects that I’ve been updating you on in this column, our company is overseeing the Crown’s support for 18 local ‘shovel ready’ infrastructure projects that will provide real benefits for our community.
Tīrama Mai – meaning to illuminate or bring light – is an exciting new lighting event celebrating Matariki in the heart of the city.
You may recall that after last year’s Covid-19 nationwide lockdown, the Government announced that it would help stimulate the economy with a Shovel Ready Project Fund for well-advanced infrastructure initiatives. Ōtākaro is administering $137m of support for a variety of projects that, together with other funding, have a total value of $248m. Two of these projects have already been completed. The new Taylor’s Mistake Surf Life Saving Clubhouse opened in February, the South Brighton Surf Life Saving Club’s new facility opened in May, and the neighbouring New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club’s new premises are progressing well. Six projects are major cycle routes being undertaken by
Christchurch’s City Council and, continuing with the recreation theme, there are softball, tennis, and other sporting and community facilities in the eastern suburbs. There are two medical projects: accommodation for Bone Marrow Cancer Trust patients and their families, and an accommodation and support services building for the Cancer Society’s Canterbury West Coast Division. Two other projects, the Ashburton District Council’s new Library and Civic Centre, and stormwater and flood prevention improvements at Kaiapoi, are also under way. It’s satisfying to see progress with these varied and worthy projects.
From 6pm to 11pm every night until 10 July, we will get to enjoy a series of innovative lighting installations, projections and illuminated artworks created by some of Canterbury’s best lighting artists. The Arts Centre, Worcester Boulevard, Victoria Square, the Ōtākaro Avon River Precinct, and New Brighton will all have lighting displays to brighten up the winter nights. Lighting events have proved popular in the city in the past, and we know that this new festival will be something the public will embrace and enjoy. So take the opportunity to head to town or New Brighton and see the installations and support the hospitality businesses that will be open
during the event. In addition to the lighting installations, there will be talented entertainers performing on the weekends in the city during the lighting festival. There’s also the Matariki Fireworks Spectacular happening in New Brighton on Saturday 10 July to mark the end of Tīrama Mai and the beginning of KidsFest. We have also installed panels in the central city that have been created by Waltham-based Maui Studios to help tell the story of Matariki. And the highlight for me is knowing that all the installations and artworks have been created by local artists. So this another chance to showcase local talent. Enjoy!

Winning heritage builds This month’s Canterbury Heritage Awards celebrated nine winners across six categories, with Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House taking home the Supreme Award.

ame Anna Crighton, Chair of the Awards, commented that “The occasion was to applaud, acclaim and celebrate the work from all entrants. The benchmark of the entries was set really high – even to make the final is a major achievement this year against stiff
competition. The judges had a difficult dilemma in making their decisions. If left to me, everyone would be a winner!” Kate and Walter Sheppard’s 1888 kauri villa was purchased by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga in 2019 for the 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in
New Zealand. The house has been adapted to a visitor destination to celebrate Kate Sheppard’s life and achievements, the suffrage movement and its legacy of social change. A structural remediation project was followed by the development of an exhibition conveying layered stories and timelines in the front four rooms of the house. This exhibition balances respect for the heritage fabric of the house with inclusive and engaging 21st century interpretation. The rear spaces of the house have been carefully adapted for public education and space for gatherings. This project has balanced a respect for tangible and intangible heritage that will resonate with, and inspire, all who visit.

he joint venture has bought 1000ha on the Kaitōrete Spit, looking to protect and rejuvenate its unique environment and to develop aerospace R&D facilities, including a possible launch facility. Pundits view it as a significant step towards developing key infrastructure to support the region’s aerospace and future transport industry, one of four “supernodes” deemed to
have enormous potential to boost Canterbury’s economy. The region is already home to a critical mass of aerospace and future transport businesses, with a current global value of $360 billion, estimated to increase to $2.7 trillion by 2050. New Zealand’s space economy was valued at $1.7 billion in the 2018/9 financial year, employing 12,000 people.
NEW HORIZONS Ōtautahi Christchurch is already one of five Antarctic gateway cities, and was the New Zealand region to develop an aerospace sector plan, building on Canterbury’s geographic advantages such as clear skies, flat plains, and easy international access. Nearly a third of national aerospace engineering graduates come from Canterbury universities providing a local talent pool.
GATEWAY TO SPACE Companies such as Kea Aerospace, which is developing an unmanned high-altitude solar aircraft, Dawn Aerospace, which makes reusable rockets to carry small satellites into space, and Wisk, which is a self-flying, electric aircraft that rises like a helicopter and flies like a plane, are part of that aerospace eco-system and could potentially use Project Tāwhaki’s facilities.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE The Kaitōrete Spit is an area of significant cultural importance to the two rūnanga involved in Project Tāwhaki. During the next two years, 5000 native plants and trees will be planted and the land will be fenced to help protect it. The spit also has a history of aerospace research, being used by NASA for suborbital rocket launches in the 1960s.

f you have a building project on, one of the things you will need to think about is how to keep your site, well, on the site, when it starts to rain. You don’t want to be wondering what to do while the mud and sawdust is washing into the creek, and that’s where MBC Environmental Solutions comes in. Amongst its impressive
array of environmental services, the team offers management of erosion and sediment on construction sites. “We are experts in maintaining stabilised sites while projects are on the go, avoiding muddy trails off the site and runoff getting into waterways,” says Director Mark Hamilton. Mark and his team can come on board your project right from the beginning and this makes for efficiencies in the consenting process. “With our erosion and sediment control service, we tend to work with small to medium contractors on residential sites across Canterbury, who don’t necessarily have the in-house expertise,” says Mark. “As well as taking on the paperwork for our contractors, they get to avoid the headache of neighbour complaints or a visit from an unhappy inspector.” However, far from being office-based pen-pushers, they also offer boots on the ground. It’s the MBC team onsite building the sediment fences and fitting the sediment control socks. “We apply the techniques that Environment Canterbury includes in its Erosion and Sediment Control toolbox,” says Mark. During construction, full monitoring is also available. “We visit each site regularly and consult with the main
contractor and subbies,” says Mark. “If anything comes up, we can resolve it ‘on-the-hoof’, and we pack it all up and take it away at the end of the job.” That’s only the beginning of the company’s environmental expertise though, as its impressive new website demonstrates. The diverse team offers know-how in a broad range of environmental issues and can often combine everything required on a complex site. “One of our really popular services is licensed asbestos removal,” says Mark. “Post-earthquake demolition has so often left sections contaminated with asbestos. We assist with investigation, removal and remediation so that the site is safe to work on again.” So excellent are its work practices, the team at MBC recently received full international standard ISO 45001 accreditation for Health and Safety, and nationally it has achieved an impressive SiteWise Gold Status thanks to exemplary results. Heritage building lives again Yet another of Christchurch’s lost heritage buildings has come back to life in model form.
T
his time it is the historic Canterbury Jockey Club building that has been recreated as an incredibly detailed model to become the latest new exhibit at Quake City, Canterbury Museum’s special exhibition about the Canterbury earthquakes. The model, crafted over five weeks by local artist
Mike Beer, aka Ghostcat, recreates in miniature one of the many heritage buildings that Christchurch lost after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The Canterbury Jockey Club building on Oxford Terrace was designed by brothers Sidney and Alfred Luttrell in the Edwardian Tudor style and was completed in 1912. Between the 1920s and the 1980s the building also housed the Christchurch Stock Exchange. In later years the building was occupied by hospitality businesses and was home to Liquidity Bar and Restaurant when the earthquakes hit. Although it remained open after the September 2010 quake, the building was badly damaged on 22 February 2011 and was demolished later that year. The Canterbury Jockey Club building was classified as a Category II Heritage Building by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. Quake City is open seven days a week from 10.00am to 5.00pm at 299 Durham Street. Admission charges apply; accompanied children under 15 years visit free.
