arker mornings, cooler temperatures and trees turning from green to gold; there’s no denying autumn’s arrival. Personally, early-autumn is one of my favourite times of the year: The slightly chillier evenings makes sleeping that much snugglier, but it’s not quite time to get the puffer jacket out of hibernation. The trees lining my street look resplendent in every gradient of red, but not enough have fallen yet to wreak havoc with the drains. Easter is just around the corner with its promise of a long weekend, chocolate and baked goods (but the effects of overindulging are yet to be felt). The turn of seasons is often an apt time to reflect on the one just been and look ahead to what is to come. So, as the sun sets on a summer marred by both seesawing Alert Levels and a countrywide gratitude for freedom, we’re now looking to an autumn and winter of vaccinations, and the benefits that may bring. Perhaps by the time summer comes again, life might look a little bit more how we remember it, before a pandemic came to town. The days may be getting dark, but the near future is looking much brighter.

The Pop Up Penguins art trail brought fun and colour to the community as 50 giant penguin statues decorated by the country’s leading artists were displayed throughout Canterbury. And now, the initiative has raised more than $1million for charity.

The final hammer price total at the auction, which was run by presenting partners Harcourts, was $1,005,500. Event producers Wild in Art will be giving 75 percent of the proceeds of the auction to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, which is the total money raised minus production costs. Event Producer of Pop Up Penguins: Wild in Art, Claire Cowles says she is over the moon with the outcome. “I am absolutely delighted with the result of the Pop Up Penguins auction and the money it has raised to support families in Canterbury through the work of Cholmondeley Children’s Centre,” she says. “We’re so grateful to all the sponsors, artists and schools that made the project happen. It’s been great to run a second art trail in Christchurch – thank you for hosting our colourful colony of penguins.” Two penguins proved especially popular on auction night, fetching $36,000 each. Shy-no-more by Deb Harrison saw the not-so-little hoiho

encrusted in diamantes with a spiffing rainbow blazer and baby pink flippers, and Mischievous Penguin by Rebekah Connor was splashed with bright fluro Resene paint. Other designs included the steampunk Punk It Penguin by Laura Hewetson, which was won by a local steampunk fan who outbid Waitaki District Mayor, Gary Kircher, who was hoping to get his flippers on the statue for steampunk HQ, Oamaru. Cholmondeley Children’s Centre helps more than 500 children each year, and relies on the generosity of donors to keep its services running. Children receive respite and care at the centre, for issues such as mental health, poverty, family violence or cancer diagnosis. The Pop Up Penguins were installed in libraries, supermarkets, museums and public places in December and January, with more than 10,500 people downloading the app to locate and vote for their favourite penguins.

I am absolutely delighted with the result... and the money it has raised to support families in Canterbury.

SUP-stream on Otakaro Joe Jagusch launched Aotearoa’s ﬁrst through-city paddle ﬂoat experience on the Avon River/Ōtākaro in October 2020. Since then, Airborn Paddling has been offering a unique perspective of the river and its surroundings.

Both household names in their own right, Anika Moa and Boh Runga are two of Canterbury’s most loved local gems. And their lastest ‘bohlaboration’ could be adorning the necks of your near and dear. Metropol talks with the women about their jewellery range, a sucessful friendship and what the next 12 months have in store. Congratulations on the beautiful collaboration! Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration and significance behind the design? Anika: I had just had my beautiful baby and I wanted a locket to put her hair in and searched everywhere online and couldn’t find anything that caught my eye. So, I texted Boh and said, ‘Oi! kotiro, we need to Boh-laberate on a Marigold locket’ and she text back straight away and was like, ‘When do we meet?’ So cool. I love Boh’s energy and enthusiasm for new, fresh and crazy ideas. Boh: Thank you, such a fun thing to do. Anika’s wee girl was the inspiration with her name Marigold lending itself to a floral motif, naturally. The end result with the locket is a nod to a classic flower design with a bit of a modern twist.

Initially you planned to release the locket on Mother’s Day 2020 but opted for the end of last year instead. Can you tell us a bit about the serendipitous launch and the decision to release when you did? Boh: Covid-19 put a stop to everyday life let alone launching a new range with Anika. I think when we did eventually launch, the realisation of what we were all going through really brought home how much we are sentimental at heart and a locket to hold a treasure really resonated with people.

They are the markers of your life. It’s nice to have those special things to pass down to your family too or share with your friends.

In an age where it’s so common to capture and keep memories online, in your opinion, why is it important to have tangible mementos as well? Anika: When I am holding something that is dear to me in my hands it sends me back to those times of love, loss, a memory of a parent who has passed or in my case, the birth of my daughter. Something that I wished for for so long. I feel like she is a treasure and I feel grateful she chose me as her mama! It’s a very real, long lasting love. Boh: They are the markers of your life. It’s nice to have those special things to pass down to your family too or share with your friends. Physical pieces can jog your memory and bring back the time, place, the laughs and tears. All should be valued.

This isn’t your first collaboration, after performing together for more than 20 years and forming an unbreakable friendship? What’s the secret to working so well together? Anika: Well, we both grew up in Christchurch so that’s where the amazingness comes from, also, we both love to have a good laugh so there go those endorphins and lastly, we both love creating things whether it be music, lyrics and now, jewellery. I love and admire Boh. She has designed a wonderful piece of art and I’m grateful. Gush gush gush. Boh: Not seeing each other very often [laughs]! 2020, in short, was a strange year for everyone. Looking to the future; be it music, jewellery or more collaborations, what does 2021 have in store for you both? Anika: 2021 is my year to be calm, quieter and more in the present moment. Also, more to come from Boh and I. Oh, and listen to The Hits with Stace, Mike and Anika Monday to Friday 4 to 7pm [laughs]. Boh: More Marigold additions are on their way, in not just jewellery but in other fun products for children. I’m excited about that. And of course, just more designing in general. Music-wise, I have a fun project brewing which will incorporate the design aspect of what I do but that is under wraps.

Fitting workouts around four young children is no easy feat, but Lisa Fong has not only nailed the task – she’s turned it into a successful global business. She tells Metropol how she built an international online workout community from her Christchurch home.

he challenges of motherhood can be far reaching, and for Lisa Fong, exercise was her antidote. Now, she shares the medicine of movement with more than 4500 people around the world who subscribe to her inspiring online fitness platform. “Move it Mama was born because I was struggling,” says the mother of four. “I’d lost myself in the depths of motherhood, and exercise saved me. I feel extremely passionate about helping those just like me.” Originally a Wellingtonian, Lisa moved to Christchurch with husband, Dan, seven years ago. The couple have four sons Rico, 10, Louis, 8, Carlos, 6, and Tei, 4. Originally a school teacher, Lisa had given up her job to be a stay-athome mum. At the time, a gym membership was out of her price range – let alone finding time and childcare to attend. So, she would do quick, 20-minute home bodyweight workouts. A concept which impressed the other school, mums – so in 2017 they started joining in, too. “They couldn’t figure out how or where I found the time,” she says. “One day it rained, so instead of getting them over - we had to do it on the driveway because my house was too small for all of us - I streamed the workout to a private group of two via Facebook Live. “This group grew to over 5000 people in about six months.” Then, in February 2018 Move it Mama was born. Subscribers pay just $10 per month for 10 live workouts per week. “When I first started sharing my workouts we were a one income family...

and I knew exactly what it felt like to have no spare money. When it came to launching the business, I wanted to break down as many barriers as possible. “There were times when I couldn’t afford a coffee so I wanted the weekly amount to be cheaper than a latte!” Lisa’s twin sisters have also come on board to help. Jess, a personal trainer, has joined as operations manager and also teaches three work outs a week. Char also teaches workouts and weighs in on other areas of the business. Joanne Cameron is marketing strategist, and other friends helped with the website and branding. While Move it Mama began to give busy mothers their workout fix, don’t let the name fool you – the format is popular with a much wider demographic of fitness lovers, too. “We naturally appeal to busy, stay-athome or working mothers. But we also have a large portion of our membership who are not quite so knee-deep in nappies. We get a thrill at the crosssection of our members… we love it when non-mothers, partners, husbands, kids and grandmothers thrive off our workouts, too!” With no prior business experience, Move it Mama is an ongoing learning experience for this teacher. “I’ve learnt as I go and am still learning every single day. It’s funny because when people came to me to say I had to turn this into a business, I had no idea what to do. Zero. “I managed somehow; by lots of talking and connecting with people that could help. I asked a lot of questions.” But the biggest lesson has been about finding her purpose. “I found my passion and that was helping people feel good, to regain a sense of control we can so often lose, and to reclaim our sparkle that can get lost along the way. “The whole business thing still feels a bit like a dream. I feel so lucky to be in this position and to now be doing it alongside my beautiful sisters. “It feels like I’ve found my place in the world.”

A song to belong A new exhibition at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū by a local artist gives a glimpse into what ﬁve New Zealand families with a wide range of cultural and ancestral connections feel about place and belonging in Aotearoa.

rtist Olivia Webb, whose own Christchurch-based family is part of the exhibit, worked with five families – who have ties to Kiribati, Zambia, Samoa, the Philippines, England and

the Netherlands – to create their own songs about living in Aotearoa for her exhibition named Anthems of Belonging. In life-sized video projections, each family is seen performing their anthem from their own lounge room, emphasising both the personal and political qualities of using one’s voice. While they are not professional singers, music is an important part of each family’s culture. Gallery Lead Curator Felicity Milburn says the exhibition illustrates the diversity of contemporary New Zealand culture, and shows how varied cultural backgrounds and traditions can shape the experience of living and belonging here. “The face of Aotearoa is constantly

changing – for the benefit of us all, I think – and this exhibition is a perfect illustration of that.” Olivia says the anthems reflect the personal values, concerns and aspirations of all involved. “These songs have different vocal qualities, musical structures and lyrics, often including ideas that do not feature in New Zealand’s current national anthem ‘God Defend New Zealand’ – a musical setting of a poem written by Irish-born Thomas Bracken in the 1870s.” Webb is currently working to develop two new anthems with Christchurch families, and these will be added to the exhibition as they are completed. Anthems of Belonging is on at the Christchurch Art Gallery from March 13 until July 11, and contains several public programmes including a floor talk and multiple workshops. Solving the people puzzle People, and problems – or more specifically, helping the former solve the latter – is what drew Ashley-Jayne (AJ) Lodge to law. The employment law specialist has recently joined Anderson Lloyd’s Christchurch office as a partner, and tells Metropol how she navigates the complexities of the field.

Luckily, AJ thrives on diving into these issues to find solutions. “I have always been fascinated by people – what motivates us, human behaviour, how we interact with others, and psychology,” she says. “I’ve also always loved solving problems, and being an employment lawyer gives me the opportunity to work with both, helping businesses through challenging situations by being able to take an objective view and find a solution that works within the legal framework.” When it comes to solving

his is a common issue for many people, and too often it’s because we only look at the surface of the problem,” she says. “I have a theory about effective and long-lasting treatment called the ‘Iceberg Theory’. It is easy to assume that weak muscles are the cause of ongoing issues. But it is rarely that simple.” Cath likens assessment of injuries to an iceberg. Whilst you can only see the iceberg that is above the water’s surface, the majority of it actually lies beneath the surface. The same goes for an injury. Whilst you can see weak muscles and stiff joints, the underlying reasons that have led to this often lie beneath the surface. “For example, a phenomenon known as muscle inhibition is often the underlying cause of muscle weakness,” says Cath. “In this case, the muscles are being told by the nervous system not to work, so no

Another thing to be aware of as regards to denture oral health is any unusual lesions or abnormalities presenting in the mouth. “If oral cancer is discovered, for example, the earlier it’s detected, the better,” says Ryan. yan says it was his involvement with sport that introduced him to podiatry. “I played several sports and did a lot of hiking. Unfortunately, that led to some foot problems and I needed to visit a podiatrist,” he says. “The relief from the treatment was immense and determined my career direction. I’ve loved every minute since.” Ryan adds that podiatry is a very rewarding career because of the difference even simple procedures can make for patients. He enjoys all aspects of the work from palliative care to orthotics, from medical pedicures to nail restoration, from working with children to older patients. “The work is all so varied. oncussions occur as the result of a traumatic blow to the head. This causes the brain and supporting membranes to bounce, twist and get damaged inside the skull. Developments in the longerterm effects of concussion have featured in the news recently, as new brain research illustrates just how long-term and wide-ranging effects can be. After one of the largest ever investigations into the link between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cognitive decline in later life, Danish and US researchers concluded that the younger a person was when sustaining a head injury, the higher the risk of developing a form of dementia. The study looked at the health records of 2.8 million people over 36 years and found that individuals who sustained a TBI in their 20s were 63 percent more likely to develop dementia

in the next three decades than someone who did not sustain one. Gill Redden, of Gill Redden Cranio, specialises in actually treating concussion symptoms rather than monitoring and forming plans, effectively treating patients sometimes months or years after the initial injury. “It is better, however, if people seek treatment immediately after their head or tailbone trauma, certainly not waiting 6 weeks to see if they ‘come right.’” says Gill, “Some of their cranial bones will definitely be jammed up!” Using CranioSacral therapy, Gill provides a post-concussion treatment programme that helps nurture the bones, membranes, organs, tissue, nerves and blood vessels back to free movement, helping enable people to be pain and dysfunction-free. A serendipitous lion The lion may well sport a monocle, and the décor of mosaic tiles and lush greenery certainly has a postcolonial feel to it, but food at The Fine Lion, though downright delicious, is deﬁnitely not posh nosh, assures owners Matt and Belinda Lion.

We’ve bought a wee bit of Christchurch to Ashburton.” As Matt and Belinda also own the well-renowned Kelly’s Café & Bar, only 50 metres away, it’s fair to say there’s little they don’t know about the hospitality trade. Key to their success is having the

best people on board, such as former MasterChef NZ contestant and local caterer Chantelle Quinn. It was Chantelle, with the help of her chef brother Kinnear, who created the menu and helped set up the kitchen for The Fine Lion’s opening launch last November. She remains its business consultant and is to plan future menus, including winter and seasonal menus. Preheat oven to 200°C fan bake. Line two shallow roasting dishes with baking paper for easy cleanup. Arrange chicken, bacon and truss tomatoes on one tray. Sprinkle chicken with lemon zest, drizzle everything with oil and season with salt and pepper.

Arrange bread chunks on second tray, drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper to make croutons. Bake until chicken is fully cooked through (20 to 25 minutes). Allow to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. While chicken bakes, make Caesar Dressing. Heat oil and sizzle garlic and anchovies over a medium heat for about 30 seconds, mashing up anchovies to a paste. Add all remaining ingredients to pan and boil hard until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 2 minutes). Cool before use. The dressing will keep for a few days in a jar in the fridge. It thickens on cooling, so warm gently to loosen, or thin with a little water as desired.

Tray-bake chicken Caesar salad

Cut each chicken thigh into 3 to 4 pieces and each bacon rasher into four pieces. Arrange evenly over salad with tomatoes and croutons. Drizzle with more dressing, then serve the remainder in a small jug or bowl on the side. Garnish salad with basil or parsley and grated parmesan to serve.

Caesar salad is one of those timeless recipes that everyone loves. Throwing everything into the oven to cook makes fast work of this fabulous recipe, and the dressing can also be made ahead of time.

Caesar dressing 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed 5 canned anchovies, with a little of their oil 1 cup cream ½ cup grated parmesan (about 40g) Finely grated zest of ½ a lemon Ground black pepper, to taste

To prepare the salad, cut lettuce into wedges or cut leaves in half and pile onto a serving platter. Drizzle with ¼ cup Caesar dressing and toss to coat.

Made from scratch It’s a place where nicknames are celebrated. Derek Morris, known as Bunco by his mates, thought that name was the perfect one for his new cafe in Amberley.

And everything means everything – bread, brioche, sauces, pies, slices, custard squares, biscuits and cakes – even ice cream. “A true chef shouldn’t be opening bags,” says Derek. “I have a real passion for food

Part of that is interacting with my customers and getting to know them, as well as giving them delicious things to eat.” Derek caters for all tastes from the big appetite to the more health conscious, with a large gluten-free range too. Pick a piquette

One old drink is gaining new popularity for its low alcohol content and fresh, light ﬂavours. Meet piquette, the Centuries-old mellow and humble wine-ish beverage having its moment in the sun (again).

his drop is a low alcohol wine made from the second pressings of grape pomace (the pulpy residue after grapes have been crushed), mixed with water and left to ferment – creating a refreshing, earthy flavour and subtle fizz. Steeped in tradition, the brew dates back centuries where it was widely enjoyed throughout Europe, and in the 19th Century, was popular with farm and winery workers for lunch. More recently, piquette has taken off around the world as winemakers look to reduce waste and reuse the pomace created during winemaking, and consumers have – quite literally – lapped it up. In New Zealand, beer behemoths Garage Project have whipped up its Little Crush range, and Alex Craighead Wines’ canned Kindeli is gaining a following, too. Fans of pét-nat, another trending wine-but-not-as-you-know-it, may be drawn to piquette – but those who have never heard of either should also consider giving it a try, too. Watch this space, piquette is picked to become a trending drop of this year and beyond.

his design shows the key lies in using deep, warm tones, and adding plenty of natural textures and layers. Bulbs love pots and with careful selection and large pots you can get successive flowerings all through spring. Or plant violas and pansies on top with bulbs underneath and let them pop up through the annuals. Plant in bulb mix and ensure good drainage with a few stones over the drainage holes. How to plant?

Generally, plant two to three times their own depth and two bulb widths apart, as soon as possible after purchase while the bulbs are still firm. Plant in drifts which gives the appearance of naturalisation. Which way is up? If in any doubt the guideline is to plant with the flattest side of the bulb down, and if you’re still not sure, plant them on their sides and they’ll sort themselves out. When planting in flower beds, use the purpose-designed bulb baskets to avoid digging them up all the time.

What to feed and when?

Definitely not until it’s turned brown and dying off because the foliage builds up bulb reserves for next year.

It’s been an exciting few weeks for the Canterbury branch of Master Joiners with their inaugural awards taking place. “Our national body has been holding awards for a number of years and so has the Nelson branch,” says Canterbury President Nathan Busch.

o we thought it was high time Canterbury showcased the work and talent of the joiners in our region to raise the profile of our craft. It took some organising, but it has been worth all the effort with the quality of the entries we received.” Over thirty entries were submitted in nine categories: best apprentice; best benchtop;

best staircase; best speciality fit out; best door or window; best kitchen under $20,000; best kitchen $20,000 to $40,000; best kitchen $40,000-plus and best kitchen design. A panel of three judges – an architect and two interior designers – will use a range of criteria to determine the category winners - the level of workmanship and skill, the use of materials, the complexity of the project and the visual appeal of the completed work. Great photography, dressed and styled work, and the ability to tell a story about a project will be key to the success of the various entries. “We are delighted that members have embraced the opportunity to present some of the finest work from the industry in Canterbury and celebrate their innovation and excellence of design. This has also been a chance to encourage all members to use sustainable material in their work and to follow best practice.” The names of the winners in the nine categories will be released later this month.

Mastering joinery M

aster Joiners belong to one of the world’s oldest trades, dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries. Most of us have heard of Master Builders and Master Plumbers, but Master Joiners are perhaps not so well-known. A joiner is a skilled tradesperson who works with timber and board products to create constructions such as kitchens, doors, windows, staircases and counters. It is an area of professionalism and craftsmanship. Joiners are represented in New Zealand by the Master Joiners Federation which has 10 regional associations, including one in Canterbury. As a group they aim to promote the Master Joiners brand encouraging customers to use joiners who are masters of their trade, producing high standards of workmanship. nside, Mazda’s simplistic Kodo design philosophy is everywhere. CX-9 Takami benefits over the standard Limited spec with niceties like the option of either pure white or walnut brown nappa leather heated and ventilated seats. These seats also feature a new design with quilting, piping and stitch colour change. You also get shift paddles, wireless charging, and a larger 10.25inch multi-information display housing the latest generation MZD touchscreen infotainment system. It is very intuitive and easy to read. Also, the Bose stereo system sounds sweet.

Driving to Balcairn and back, the 2021 CX-9 Takami feels so planted. Plus, a lack of road noise and sumptuous ride comfort was very impressive. The 2.5L turbo four pot with 170kW and 420Nm of torque was also very quiet. Keep it in the sweet spot between 1600 and 3000rpm, and it pulls quite nicely. At $70,890 plus ORC, the CX-9 Takami is quite well priced considering the level of refinement you get is usually reserved to high end SUVs costing twice as much. You could do a lot worse than this one.

Jaguar have announced it will become an all-electric brand. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced last month its Jaguar arm will cease production of petrol and diesel cars by 2025, producing only electric powered vehicles.

he move to go full electric comes after JLR management outlined a zeroemission business plan, named Reimagine, which it hopes to achieve by 2039. The plan comes after pressure from many countries for mainstream car makers to severely reduce their carbon footprint and emissions. As a result, Jaguar have

announced it will be spending a hefty $4.8 billion NZD a year on electric only platforms and technology for its new car line up. Jaguar have also announced its XJ saloon will not be renewed as an EV, stating the iconic luxury car will be discontinued after 50-plus years in production. A statement from JLR says: “Following

a thorough technology review against the exponential change in the automotive industry, we concluded that the planned XJ replacement does not fit with our vision for a reimaged Jaguar brand.” JLR have also announced Land Rover will follow suit by also producing electric only vehicles by 2030.

he current generation has been with us since 2017 and was the first Type R to be sold new in New Zealand. It also quickly set the standard which all would-be hot hatches were judged against. For 2021, there have been subtle changes, but all of them welcome. A bigger front grille increases cooling for the 228kW/400Nm 2L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which happens to be a real peach. There are also redesigned front and rear carbon splitters to aid with downforce at speed. Underneath, you get remapped engine software, improved dampers and tweaked suspension bushes, making for a more comfortable ride around town. You can also have your Type R in the new Boost Blue paint scheme, which looks simply epic from all angles. The driving position is still nigh on perfect and those Recaro sports seats provide racing-car-like support while still being very comfortable. Also, the interior is awash with added Type R-ness, including red seat belts, a new alcantara wrapped steering wheel, and a new gear lever for the six-speed manual box which harks back to the classic EK9 Civic Type R and DC2 Integra. serious fun, but where the Type R really shines is in R Plus mode. Each throw of the six-speed box is like loading a bolt action rifle. Every down change is accompanied with a blip of the throttle to simulate a heel and toe shift. Honestly, with so many hot hatches deferring to an auto box these days, it’s so refreshing, and so satisfying swapping cogs around yourself. Build the boost up to around 4500rpm and hang on. While not violent by any means, it still surges forward with enough power to give you the giggles. The Brembo brakes have also been improved, allowing you to pull up quicker and smoother than before. While you can devour the twisty stuff at a considerable rate in Comfort mode, naturally Sport and R Plus are best. The Type R constantly coaxes you to push harder and turn in sharper. Keep it in the sweet spot between 2500 and 5000rpm, work that delightful manual box, and this road going adrenaline pump just flies. The Type R also comes with a new performance datalogger system. Called LogR, it allows you to monitor your driving in terms of performance, both on track and off, via the LogR App on your smartphone. The $62,990 Civic Type R is still capable of getting under your skin. Make no bones about this one, it’s just as intoxicating as ever.

guess that’s why BMW sales have jumped 50 percent in the year to December, and why it’s the only premium car brand to register 2000plus cars in New Zealand last year. The BMW X6 has 460kW of power with 750Nm of torque. That is something similar to the top line of any luxury sports cars and wow, you can really feel it. The eight speed M steptronic transmission is so smoother than silk. The luxury cabin has leather merino seating, lumbar support and cooling system meaning your journey is done in pure comfort. That’s the package you’re getting for $231,900 though. Everything is top of the line. With high roof rails in high gloss shadowline, the 21-inch bi colour alloy rims and that beautiful downward slope on the tail - you’ve got an SUV which almost overloads the senses. The team at Christchurch BMW joked about telling the police I was on the road and to keep an eye out for me. But you really do need to keep an eye on your speedometer. Crossing the Yaris WORDS BEN SELBY

The trend of turning small hatchbacks into small SUVs just keeps growing. It was only a matter of time before Toyota did the same thing to the Yaris. This brings us to the Yaris Cross, a Yaris hatch with a difference.

hile sharing the same TNGA-B platform, the Cross is 240mm longer and 90mm taller than the Yaris Hatch. You also get 30mm

more ground clearance too. My test car was the range topping Limited Hybrid. Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre three pot petrol engine with 88kW mated

to a hybrid electric system with 85kW. Toyota claim combined fuel consumption figures of 3.8L/100km, although the best I managed to average was around 4.7L/100km. The interior is pretty much identical to the hatch, and you get a tonne of kit as standard, like a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitor, lane tracing assist, radar cruise control, emergency steering assist and crosswind assist.

With the Limited, you also get additional goodies like electric heated front seats, leather steering wheel and extra USB charging ports. On the move, the Cross is not quite as entertaining as the hatch, but it’s still very comfortable and happiest when cruising. The range starts at $29,990 for the entry level GX petrol, whereas my Limited Hybrid retails for $38,990. The Yaris Cross is a Yaris SUV we never thought we needed but glad exists.
