arker mornings, cooler temperatures and trees turning from green to gold; there’s no denying autumn’s arrival. Personally, early-autumn is one of my favourite times of the year: The slightly chillier evenings makes sleeping that much snugglier, but it’s not quite time to get the puffer jacket out of hibernation. The trees lining my street look resplendent in every gradient of red, but not enough have fallen yet to wreak havoc with the drains. Easter is just around the corner with its promise of a long weekend, chocolate and baked goods (but the effects of overindulging are yet to be felt). The turn of seasons is often an apt time to reflect on the one just been and look ahead to what is to come. So, as the sun sets on a summer marred by both seesawing Alert Levels and a countrywide gratitude for freedom, we’re now looking to an autumn and winter of vaccinations, and the benefits that may bring. Perhaps by the time summer comes again, life might look a little bit more how we remember it, before a pandemic came to town. The days may be getting dark, but the near future is looking much brighter.

WORDS MORGAN TAIT

The Pop Up Penguins art trail brought fun and colour to the community as 50 giant penguin statues decorated by the country’s leading artists were displayed throughout Canterbury. And now, the initiative has raised more than $1million for charity.

T

he penguins – adorned in artistic themes such as steam punk, a buzzy bee, the ocean and other New Zealand

birds - were displayed at iconic locations for the public to visit over summer, before being auctioned last month.

PHOTOS BY DICE SALES PHOTOGRAPHY

The final hammer price total at the auction, which was run by presenting partners Harcourts, was $1,005,500. Event producers Wild in Art will be giving 75 percent of the proceeds of the auction to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, which is the total money raised minus production costs. Event Producer of Pop Up Penguins: Wild in Art, Claire Cowles says she is over the moon with the outcome. “I am absolutely delighted with the result of the Pop Up Penguins auction and the money it has raised to support families in Canterbury through the work of Cholmondeley Children’s Centre,” she says. “We’re so grateful to all the sponsors, artists and schools that made the project happen. It’s been great to run a second art trail in Christchurch – thank you for hosting our colourful colony of penguins.” Two penguins proved especially popular on auction night, fetching $36,000 each. Shy-no-more by Deb Harrison saw the not-so-little hoiho

encrusted in diamantes with a spiffing rainbow blazer and baby pink flippers, and Mischievous Penguin by Rebekah Connor was splashed with bright fluro Resene paint. Other designs included the steampunk Punk It Penguin by Laura Hewetson, which was won by a local steampunk fan who outbid Waitaki District Mayor, Gary Kircher, who was hoping to get his flippers on the statue for steampunk HQ, Oamaru. Cholmondeley Children’s Centre helps more than 500 children each year, and relies on the generosity of donors to keep its services running. Children receive respite and care at the centre, for issues such as mental health, poverty, family violence or cancer diagnosis. The Pop Up Penguins were installed in libraries, supermarkets, museums and public places in December and January, with more than 10,500 people downloading the app to locate and vote for their favourite penguins.

I am absolutely delighted with the result... and the money it has raised to support families in Canterbury.

SUP-stream on Otakaro Joe Jagusch launched Aotearoa’s first through-city paddle float experience on the Avon River/Ōtākaro in October 2020. Since then, Airborn Paddling has been offering a unique perspective of the river and its surroundings.

J

oe says watching Ōtākaro’s natural state springing into new life from recent plantings along its banks is inspiring and his dream is to share this with more Cantabrians.

He says the river is the lifeblood of the city and there’s so much to learn from Ōtākaro. “And paddle boarding is a great way to tighten the body and free the mind from the grind!”

Airborn Paddling has a range of paddling choices - upstream and downstream. “The Avon/ Ōtākaro moves very slowly, so this enables upriver paddling”. Inflatable boards are the

simplest craft to get on and off, they’re light to carry and you won’t end up sitting in a pool of water from a dripping paddle blade. Joe has big plans for the future of Airborn Paddling. How about a warm up in a portable sauna after your winter paddle? There’s a range of trip options, including one called the Eels’ Pathway - a trip that takes over an hour. Local gems WORDS JESS MURRAY

Both household names in their own right, Anika Moa and Boh Runga are two of Canterbury’s most loved local gems. And their lastest ‘bohlaboration’ could be adorning the necks of your near and dear. Metropol talks with the women about their jewellery range, a sucessful friendship and what the next 12 months have in store. Congratulations on the beautiful collaboration! Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration and significance behind the design? Anika: I had just had my beautiful baby and I wanted a locket to put her hair in and searched everywhere online and couldn’t find anything that caught my eye. So, I texted Boh and said, ‘Oi! kotiro, we need to Boh-laberate on a Marigold locket’ and she text back straight away and was like, ‘When do we meet?’ So cool. I love Boh’s energy and enthusiasm for new, fresh and crazy ideas. Boh: Thank you, such a fun thing to do. Anika’s wee girl was the inspiration with her name Marigold lending itself to a floral motif, naturally. The end result with the locket is a nod to a classic flower design with a bit of a modern twist.

Initially you planned to release the locket on Mother’s Day 2020 but opted for the end of last year instead. Can you tell us a bit about the serendipitous launch and the decision to release when you did? Boh: Covid-19 put a stop to everyday life let alone launching a new range with Anika. I think when we did eventually launch, the realisation of what we were all going through really brought home how much we are sentimental at heart and a locket to hold a treasure really resonated with people.

They are the markers of your life. It’s nice to have those special things to pass down to your family too or share with your friends.

In an age where it’s so common to capture and keep memories online, in your opinion, why is it important to have tangible mementos as well? Anika: When I am holding something that is dear to me in my hands it sends me back to those times of love, loss, a memory of a parent who has passed or in my case, the birth of my daughter. Something that I wished for for so long. I feel like she is a treasure and I feel grateful she chose me as her mama! It’s a very real, long lasting love. Boh: They are the markers of your life. It’s nice to have those special things to pass down to your family too or share with your friends. Physical pieces can jog your memory and bring back the time, place, the laughs and tears. All should be valued.

out & about

This isn’t your first collaboration, after performing together for more than 20 years and forming an unbreakable friendship? What’s the secret to working so well together? Anika: Well, we both grew up in Christchurch so that’s where the amazingness comes from, also, we both love to have a good laugh so there go those endorphins and lastly, we both love creating things whether it be music, lyrics and now, jewellery. I love and admire Boh. She has designed a wonderful piece of art and I’m grateful. Gush gush gush. Boh: Not seeing each other very often [laughs]! 2020, in short, was a strange year for everyone. Looking to the future; be it music, jewellery or more collaborations, what does 2021 have in store for you both? Anika: 2021 is my year to be calm, quieter and more in the present moment. Also, more to come from Boh and I. Oh, and listen to The Hits with Stace, Mike and Anika Monday to Friday 4 to 7pm [laughs]. Boh: More Marigold additions are on their way, in not just jewellery but in other fun products for children. I’m excited about that. And of course, just more designing in general. Music-wise, I have a fun project brewing which will incorporate the design aspect of what I do but that is under wraps.

Move it mama WORDS MORGAN TAIT

Fitting workouts around four young children is no easy feat, but Lisa Fong has not only nailed the task – she’s turned it into a successful global business. She tells Metropol how she built an international online workout community from her Christchurch home.

he challenges of motherhood can be far reaching, and for Lisa Fong, exercise was her antidote. Now, she shares the medicine of movement with more than 4500 people around the world who subscribe to her inspiring online fitness platform. “Move it Mama was born because I was struggling,” says the mother of four. “I’d lost myself in the depths of motherhood, and exercise saved me. I feel extremely passionate about helping those just like me.” Originally a Wellingtonian, Lisa moved to Christchurch with husband, Dan, seven years ago. The couple have four sons Rico, 10, Louis, 8, Carlos, 6, and Tei, 4. Originally a school teacher, Lisa had given up her job to be a stay-athome mum. At the time, a gym membership was out of her price range – let alone finding time and childcare to attend. So, she would do quick, 20-minute home bodyweight workouts. A concept which impressed the other school, mums – so in 2017 they started joining in, too. “They couldn’t figure out how or where I found the time,” she says. “One day it rained, so instead of getting them over - we had to do it on the driveway because my house was too small for all of us - I streamed the workout to a private group of two via Facebook Live. “This group grew to over 5000 people in about six months.” Then, in February 2018 Move it Mama was born. Subscribers pay just $10 per month for 10 live workouts per week. “When I first started sharing my workouts we were a one income family...

and I knew exactly what it felt like to have no spare money. When it came to launching the business, I wanted to break down as many barriers as possible. “There were times when I couldn’t afford a coffee so I wanted the weekly amount to be cheaper than a latte!” Lisa’s twin sisters have also come on board to help. Jess, a personal trainer, has joined as operations manager and also teaches three work outs a week. Char also teaches workouts and weighs in on other areas of the business. Joanne Cameron is marketing strategist, and other friends helped with the website and branding. While Move it Mama began to give busy mothers their workout fix, don’t let the name fool you – the format is popular with a much wider demographic of fitness lovers, too. “We naturally appeal to busy, stay-athome or working mothers. But we also have a large portion of our membership who are not quite so knee-deep in nappies. We get a thrill at the crosssection of our members… we love it when non-mothers, partners, husbands, kids and grandmothers thrive off our workouts, too!” With no prior business experience, Move it Mama is an ongoing learning experience for this teacher. “I’ve learnt as I go and am still learning every single day. It’s funny because when people came to me to say I had to turn this into a business, I had no idea what to do. Zero. “I managed somehow; by lots of talking and connecting with people that could help. I asked a lot of questions.” But the biggest lesson has been about finding her purpose. “I found my passion and that was helping people feel good, to regain a sense of control we can so often lose, and to reclaim our sparkle that can get lost along the way. “The whole business thing still feels a bit like a dream. I feel so lucky to be in this position and to now be doing it alongside my beautiful sisters. “It feels like I’ve found my place in the world.”

A song to belong A new exhibition at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū by a local artist gives a glimpse into what five New Zealand families with a wide range of cultural and ancestral connections feel about place and belonging in Aotearoa.

A

rtist Olivia Webb, whose own Christchurch-based family is part of the exhibit, worked with five families – who have ties to Kiribati, Zambia, Samoa, the Philippines, England and

the Netherlands – to create their own songs about living in Aotearoa for her exhibition named Anthems of Belonging. In life-sized video projections, each family is seen performing their anthem from their own lounge room, emphasising both the personal and political qualities of using one’s voice. While they are not professional singers, music is an important part of each family’s culture. Gallery Lead Curator Felicity Milburn says the exhibition illustrates the diversity of contemporary New Zealand culture, and shows how varied cultural backgrounds and traditions can shape the experience of living and belonging here. “The face of Aotearoa is constantly

THE FAULALO BULL FAMILY, 2019

changing – for the benefit of us all, I think – and this exhibition is a perfect illustration of that.” Olivia says the anthems reflect the personal values, concerns and aspirations of all involved. “These songs have different vocal qualities, musical structures and lyrics, often including ideas that do not feature in New Zealand’s current national anthem ‘God Defend New Zealand’ – a musical setting of a poem written by Irish-born Thomas Bracken in the 1870s.” Webb is currently working to develop two new anthems with Christchurch families, and these will be added to the exhibition as they are completed. Anthems of Belonging is on at the Christchurch Art Gallery from March 13 until July 11, and contains several public programmes including a floor talk and multiple workshops. isit the mountains, watch whales and dolphins, and take in the beautiful sunset while indulging in fresh, locally caught seafood – all in one day. Just a two-and-a-half hour drive from Christchurch, two hours from Picton and 45-minutes from Hanmer Springs and Waipara – this local gem is practically on Canterbury’s doorstep. Accessible on the Coastal Pacific train or via bus and with quaint camping and accommodation options, make your stay an overnight one. Make the most of the captivating scenery with adventure activities like whale watching, kayak tours, e-biking, llama trekking, 4WDing, mountain biking, escape rooms, helicopter rides, mini golf, fishing charters and white water river rafting. Stay in coastal campgrounds or luxury lodges, and enjoy the local hospitality scene at wineries, breweries and cute cafes. Famous for the quintessential Kiwi fish ‘n’ chips on the beach, Kaikoura is also home to cool local breweries, wholefood cafes, delicious fresh ice cream and woodfired pizzas. Seafood is the hero of most fare served in Kaikoura (which is named after the delicacy), with its famous crayfish available freshly caught and cooked, or to-go in an ice bin. Wildlife spotting is also a popular

pursuit in the coastal settlement, where New Zealand fur seals, Blue Penguins and albatross can be seen in their natural habitats. Or, for a more up close and personal encounter, join a whale watching tour to see the Giant Sperm Whale, as well as Humpbacks, Orca and Blue Whales or jump in the water to see Dusky Dolphins. Kaikoura is also a hot spot for romantic getaways or family trips, with secluded glamping and bed and breakfast options ideal for couples, or campgrounds, motels and rental houses for family groups. Experience the mountains with an array of nature walks, or check out lesser known attractions like hidden art trails, the Kaikoura museum and cool little, local coffee shops and cafés. Or, indulge in a luxurious massage or beauty treatment. A daily sheep shearing show is a popular attraction for children and those not familiar with rural life, and easy bike trails snake along the Kowhai River through native bush. If you’re driving to Kaikoura, explore the coast and countryside on the Alpine Pacific highway, where 450km of spectacular scenery winds past the wineries of Waipara, the alpine thermal pool of Hanmer and the wild surf of the east coast.

The Pandemic Pivot

Celebrating small Canterbury businesses innovating in hard times

New destinations After Covid-19 left long-time flight attendants Tom Noonan and Sam Main out of work, the pair spread their wings to new horizons – and are set to open a new furniture store in Christchurch. Interior Warehouse will stock affordable luxury furniture and homewares when it opens on Moorhouse Ave next month.

T

om says his position was disestablished almost straight away when Covid-19 arrived in New Zealand last March. He had worked for Air New Zealand for about 10 years, and at Emirates and Qantas before that. Sam’s position was disestablished about six months later after 19 years of service. “We both consider ourselves flyers at heart, so it was quite a blow,” says Tom, who grew up in Christchurch but has been based in Auckland and overseas in more

recent times. He found work quickly, filling online grocery orders for Countdown, but the owner at Interior Warehouse in Auckland got in touch with him to offer him a job. “I said I was okay with this job until flying started up again, but then it became quite apparent flying wasn’t coming back and I needed to think longterm. During that time, Interior Warehouse’s business was going really well and they were looking

at expanding.” With recently opened Gore and Napier stores performing well, the men jumped at the opportunity to franchise a Christchurch store. “Even though it means saying

goodbye to flying, we’re really excited about this.” Interior Warehouse sources furniture directly from designers around the word, ensuring not only unique and modern designs, but lower prices for customers. www.interiorwarehouse.co.nz

Q: What is the process involved for listing my business for sale? A: The initial step is for a Business Broker to provide a written current market appraisal of the business. To do this, 2–3 years’ Profit & Loss Statements for the business will be required. The market appraisal will normally be a price range. If accepted, you will then complete an Agency Agreement. The Broker will also need to undertake anti-money laundering (AML) approval (required by law). Next, the Business Broker will, with you, prepare an overview of the business which will be used in an Information Memorandum, as well as a draft web advertisement for you to approve. Once the documents are in order, and all is approved, the business can be placed on the market. Metropol 18 March, 2021 21

Solving the people puzzle People, and problems – or more specifically, helping the former solve the latter – is what drew Ashley-Jayne (AJ) Lodge to law. The employment law specialist has recently joined Anderson Lloyd’s Christchurch office as a partner, and tells Metropol how she navigates the complexities of the field.

E

mployment law is the intersection of the legal rules of a workplace, and the people who work there. Which can make for some multifaceted problems. Luckily, AJ thrives on diving into these issues to find solutions. “I have always been fascinated by people – what motivates us, human behaviour, how we interact with others, and psychology,” she says. “I’ve also always loved solving problems, and being an employment lawyer gives me the opportunity to work with both, helping businesses through challenging situations by being able to take an objective view and find a solution that works within the legal framework.” When it comes to solving

these problems, AJ takes a people centred and innovative approach. “I aim to offer innovative, tailored working solutions to my clients that best suit the organisation’s requirements. A strict legalistic approach doesn’t work in employment law, and often doesn’t get the result you want, because it is all about people. Different personalities, motivations, and emotions do not sit nicely within a black and white set of legal rules. “I do the best job when I understand the culture, structure, and feel of an organisation, so I can best support clients through difficult and often complex workplace issues.” Becoming the youngest female

partner at a mid-sized law firm at just 30, AJ is highly regarded in her field and says she was drawn to Anderson Lloyd for its stellar reputation and “ambition to have a supportive, inclusive and highperforming culture.” “I felt the firm’s values align with my own, particularly the focus on creating a sustainable, agile, and lean and connected workplace. I was excited about the firm’s commitment to continue to innovate in these areas. “Anderson Lloyd aims to represent the communities in which we operate. We have one of the highest percentages of female equity partners of any New Zealand law firm, and have clear and measurable

diversity objectives from graduate recruitment to board representation.” She is also not afraid to speak out about issues within the legal industry. “Despite there being more women than men in the legal profession as a whole, there is still an imbalance in the top jobs. The #MeToo movement kick started cultural change, but there is still work to be done. There continues to be a need for diversity of thought and experience around partnership and board tables.” As well as her law qualification, AJ also has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, moonlights as a group fitness instructor at Les Mills and has a young family.

WORDS NIKITA MORRISON

Regular visits to the beauty salon sounds like a fabulous idea, and is a fantastic way to not only look after your skin but doubles as a relaxing selfcare ritual. With so many salon treatments available, it can be tricky choosing which to invest in, but luckily, it’s becoming easier to take care of your skin at home, too. Here are Metropol’s picks of some tried and tested beauty tools designed to help bridge the gap between salon appointments.

THEY SEE ME ROLLING

BUZZ OFF PEACH FUZZ

COOL IT DOWN

We wish we discovered this sooner! This tool has hundreds of tiny needles which pricks the skin. This prompts the skin to repair itself by stimulating collagen which is proven to help reduce scarring, acne, and fine lines. Results won’t happen overnight but when used frequently, this device will be your new best friend! It does hurt to begin with but not for long and the benefits are so worth it!

More commonly known as dermaplaning, getting rid of that very fine facial hair (peach fuzz it’s called) may seem like a fad but this tool is more than meets the eye. The fine gaps in this blunt blade gently remove the fine hairs that may carry dirt and oils. This also helps remove any dead skin, which in turn allows your makeup to go on smoother.

Skincare fridges are the new must haves! The benefits you ask? Keeping your skincare products in a cool temperature helps prevent any bacteria or fungal growth and allows the products to last a little bit longer after opening. Cold products also help de-puff the eyes faster which is much needed when we’re feeling tired.

Looking deeper Do you have injuries and niggles that seem to keep recurring? Or a pain that just never seems to get better despite seeing numerous health professionals? Cath Julius, Physiotherapist at Freedom Health Physiotherapy and Pilates, tells Metropol how we need to look beyond the surface for long term solutions.

his is a common issue for many people, and too often it’s because we only look at the surface of the problem,” she says. “I have a theory about effective and long-lasting treatment called the ‘Iceberg Theory’. It is easy to assume that weak muscles are the cause of ongoing issues. But it is rarely that simple.” Cath likens assessment of injuries to an iceberg. Whilst you can only see the iceberg that is above the water’s surface, the majority of it actually lies beneath the surface. The same goes for an injury. Whilst you can see weak muscles and stiff joints, the underlying reasons that have led to this often lie beneath the surface. “For example, a phenomenon known as muscle inhibition is often the underlying cause of muscle weakness,” says Cath. “In this case, the muscles are being told by the nervous system not to work, so no

amount of strengthening will actually improve the situation until we establish why they aren’t firing in the first place.” This is why Freedom Health has set up a strong collaboration of experts with skills ranging from movement assessment, pilates therapy, breathing, dance and women’s health physiotherapists. “Our body is such a complex system that there is no way that one person can be an expert in all the underlying factors,” says Cath. “Having a team approach helps us to open our eyes to all the underlying factors and ultimately helps ensure that we can help more people find long-term success for their injuries and symptoms.” If you want to go beneath the surface and find longterm solutions for your body, contact the team at Freedom Health on (03) 355 6699, via reception@freedomhealth. co.nz or visit the website below. www.freedomhealth.co.nz

this delicate area. The Ulthera machine can deliver results in just one treatment. It uses microfocused ultrasound to deliver energy into the tissue below the skin, tightening the area around the eyes, leaving it looking smoother, giving the upper eyelids a lift and reducing bags. Reassuringly, Ulthera is an FDA approved treatment. The eye area also responds well to radiofrequency which can give you an “instant lift” by using heat to cause an immediate contraction of collagen. The lift becomes longer-lasting by stimulating the natural repair response. For optimal results, a combination of radiofrequency treatment options - skin needling, fractional skin resurfacing and 3D heating, are used. Turn those “tired” comments into “you look great” comments with smoother skin around the eyes from the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. he team covers all aspects of everyday beauty and is always looking to improve to create the best possible experience for you. To help with your beauty concerns, services on offer range from spray tans to skin treatments, manicures to massages. All of which are done with a smile, purely down to passion for the craft. When asked how she wishes clients at the parlour to feel, owner Angela McCarthy-Coffin responds: “It sounds cliché, but I want them to be treated as a friend. And, come in knowing that the services and products we provide, we wouldn’t be offering unless we’d use them ourselves.” In efforts to upskill, the parlour looks to the passions of staff. Senior Therapist Michelle suggested the Plamere Plasma Pen, which has become a perfect new addition to the parlour’s beauty belt. ust because it’s dentures, it doesn’t mean they can be neglected. Dentures can harbour bacteria and build up plaque and tartar much the same as real teeth,” he says. Ryan recommends that those with a complete set of dentures have a check-up every one to two years, while those with partial dentures have a yearly check-up. Another thing to be aware of as regards to denture oral health is any unusual lesions or abnormalities presenting in the mouth. “If oral cancer is discovered, for example, the earlier it’s detected, the better,” says Ryan. Dentures Plus offers a cleaning service that treats dentures with the Australian made Caldent, a denture cleaning product that’s only available at denture clinics, and which Ryan attests “makes dentures look really good!” For a daily cleaning regime, products such as brushes, baths and soaking solutions can be ordered online from Dentures Plus, ensuring all denture wearers have complete confidence that their smile is little short of fabulous. Call (03) 385 5517 or visit the website below to make an appointment.

There’s a somewhat erroneous train of thought out there around the subject of dentures as to maintenance and cleaning, with some people believing that once their dentures are fitted, they can more or less forget about them. Ryan Carlton of Dentures Plus cautions against this casual attitude.

yan says it was his involvement with sport that introduced him to podiatry. “I played several sports and did a lot of hiking. Unfortunately, that led to some foot problems and I needed to visit a podiatrist,” he says. “The relief from the treatment was immense and determined my career direction. I’ve loved every minute since.” Ryan adds that podiatry is a very rewarding career because of the difference even simple procedures can make for patients. He enjoys all aspects of the work from palliative care to orthotics, from medical pedicures to nail restoration, from working with children to older patients. “The work is all so varied. It really gives me a buzz because I never know each day just what will come through the door to test my skills and knowledge.” Ryan is also very excited that Footprints’ Ilam clinic where he will mostly be based will next year be in a state-of-the-art new facility along with other health professionals. “It’s going to have everything a podiatrist dreams about.”

There’s a fresh new face at Footprints Podiatry. It belongs to Ryan Primrose, the latest New Zealand- trained podiatrist to join the clinic. “He comes from Auckland,” says Senior Podiatrist Howard Nicholas, “but we won’t hold that against him!”

Does concussion stop the brain cleansing? A clean brain that is well fed and nourished is a healthy brain that fights off dementia and other cognitive disorders.

C

oncussions occur as the result of a traumatic blow to the head. This causes the brain and supporting membranes to bounce, twist and get damaged inside the skull. Developments in the longerterm effects of concussion have featured in the news recently, as new brain research illustrates just how long-term and wide-ranging effects can be. After one of the largest ever investigations into the link between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cognitive decline in later life, Danish and US researchers concluded that the younger a person was when sustaining a head injury, the higher the risk of developing a form of dementia. The study looked at the health records of 2.8 million people over 36 years and found that individuals who sustained a TBI in their 20s were 63 percent more likely to develop dementia

in the next three decades than someone who did not sustain one. Gill Redden, of Gill Redden Cranio, specialises in actually treating concussion symptoms rather than monitoring and forming plans, effectively treating patients sometimes months or years after the initial injury. “It is better, however, if people seek treatment immediately after their head or tailbone trauma, certainly not waiting 6 weeks to see if they ‘come right.’” says Gill, “Some of their cranial bones will definitely be jammed up!” Using CranioSacral therapy, Gill provides a post-concussion treatment programme that helps nurture the bones, membranes, organs, tissue, nerves and blood vessels back to free movement, helping enable people to be pain and dysfunction-free. Spinal fluid can’t move freely if bones

and membranes are jammed up. This fluid feeds and also detoxifies the brain. It is critical that the spinal fluid is flowing and CranioSacral therapy supports to ensure it is. Gill also works directly with the brain scars that form when a trauma occurs. Some troublesome symptoms are not actually concussion, and can be relatively simple to treat through freeing jammed or twisted bones and membranes

which in turn enables the brain to heal more easily. Gills comprehensive concussion-focused website allows people to gain a better understanding of concussion and its consequences, provides a concise description of what CranioSacral therapy is and is validated by testimonials of clients sharing their experiences of recovery and a pain and drug-free life.

Why All Concussions need Cranio Even if you have an old concussion without symptoms People from overseas come to have my treatment.

Healthy hair, healthy you Much like visiting the dentist, periodic check-ups for your hair and scalp health could benefit you long term. Why wait until visible signs of hair loss, baldness, or alopecia emerge? Metropol caught up with Dr Padmaja Redekar of Hairmantra to find out more about how to keep on top of your up top.

Y

ou should especially visit the clinic if there’s a known genetic heritage or if you’re experiencing any hair issues. But, sometimes it’s as simple as just needing a helping hand with basic hair hygiene, for example what type of comb to use, how climate effects your scalp. So how can Hairmantra help you? It all starts with a

consultation, followed by a microscope (60x and 150x) analysis where the clinic will look into your hair bulbs and strands. From there, low level laser therapy or appropriate hair products and supplements will be suggested. Dr Redekar’s goal is to educate and provide her clients with the proper knowledge on how small changes, according

to their lifestyle, can make a big difference. After treatments, clients may start seeing changes as soon as 15 days, she says. Curious if Hairmantra is the right fit for you? Dr Redekar is happy to have a free no-obligation conversation. Contact her on 021 069 0058 or email hairmantra@yahoo.com. www.hairmantra.co.nz

Work out your workout WORDS JESS MURRAY

They say the early bird gets the worm… but sometimes it can be hard to leave the nest in the morning. Maybe you’re struggling to find the motivation to go to the gym – again – this week. It’s all about working out the workout that best fits you.

T

he Ministry of Health recommends two and a half hours of moderate (or one and a quarter of vigorous) physical activity spread throughout the week. So, Metropol has come up with a variety of ways for you to hit your weekly move goal.

SPLASH! Swimming is a great cardiovascular activity that works your whole body. If you’re heading to a pool, a good starting point is three times a week for around 20 minutes. Naturally, it will be easier to get in the water during the warmer months, but indoor pools allow for year-round swimming. The best part? Exercise with no sweat!

DIRTY DANCING Pole dancing is a topic often danced around in conversation because of the industry it derives from, which seems ironic considering that’s exactly what the exercise consists of. Making it’s way into the mainstream, pole fitness is another complete body workout (particularly your upper body, core and thighs) that requires dancers to hold up their own body weight.

READY PLAYER ONE Whilst it’s always great to exercise outdoors, we’re not going to pretend like lockdown didn’t happen last year. Using a fitness video game can be a fun way to switch it up, games like Just Dance, Wii Fit and Nike+ Kinect Training. Not to mention it can be an inclusive, hilarious way to get the whole family moving indoors.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN It may not be possible for everyone to run away to the circus. But there is a way to live out your Cirque du Soleil fantasy – ariel arts classes. Whether you opt for silks, hoop or the trapeze, these are all full body workouts that will build strength in your arms, shoulders, upper body and core.

FIGHT CLUB Fitness boxing is a great way to punch out your weekly recommended physical activity, without having to take the hits from an opponent like in traditional boxing. It improves endurance, strength, gets your heart going and not to mention there is the hidden benefit of learning some form of self-defence.

The art of

jewellery

Via Sollertia is Latin and means the way of expertise, skilfulness, artfulness and dexterity.

Ringing in autumn WORDS MELINDA COLLINS

For better or worse, we’re waving goodbye to summer. But don’t fret, we’re ringing in autumn with a look at what we can expect to see adorning fingers in 2021. Yes, we’ve got clarity on all the latest ring trends.

GOOD AS GOLD We might have been looking at gold through rose coloured glasses, as rose gold had its moment, but nothing will ever replace the illustrious sheen of yellow gold. It has claimed back the spotlight with its rich, warm and timeless appeal.

THREE STONE SETTINGS Popularised by Meghan Markle, the three stones symbolise a couple’s past, present and future. Experts are seeing a rise in unique shapes for these trios, along with contrasting cuts or diamond sizes, to create something completely unique.

BANDING TOGETHER Dainty and slim ring bands are becoming a thing of the past as wider bands are poised to have their moment in the spotlight. If you want a ring that stands out in a crowd, a wide band is definitely one to consider.

GOING GREEN

Now 21 years in business, through good times and bad, Via Sollertia has always been committed to leaving no stone unturned to design, create and supply the perfect piece of jewellery just for you, no matter your budget.

10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 3pm Saturday Via Sollertia Jewellery 11 New Regent St, Christchurch 03 366 8001 www.viasollertia.co.nz 40 18 March, 2021 Metropol

Engagement rings are going green – and we’re not just talking about sustainability. Yes, emeralds are having a serious moment right now, with many experts labelling it the “it” stone of 2021. With the colour closely associated with new beginnings, it’s no surprise why!

CUTTING SHAPES There are the classic cuts you know and love — round, princess, cushion, emerald. And they’re not going anywhere. But have you heard of hexagon, shield or trillion cuts? When it comes to your centre stones, you can expect to see these cuts and more.

Boredof boards? WORDS JESS MURRAY

If you’ve been to any form of social event you’ve most likely come across the everpopular charcuterie board. But with changing times, aka a global pandemic, cuisine connoisseurs have had to get crafty. Jarcuterie is truly taking the internet by storm and putting the cute in charcuterie.

F

irst posted by Instagrammer Suzanne Billings (@nobelgraze) in July, the single serve grazing boards were an instant hit. This option offered a Covid19-friendly way to entertain safely, whilst also ensuring everyone indulged equally. Not to mention, no more sharing with double dippers. Much like a traditional charcuterie board, there is no recipe. Whether you’re throwing items together from your panty or creating the perfect list weeks in advance, your guests are probably going to be distracted by the re-branding of the soirée staple in front of them. Why stick to savoury? Themed jars are starting to emerge online with creators posting candy, fiesta and even holiday season jarcuteries. Talk about inventive. This latest foodie trend proves that good things do come in small packages.

A serendipitous lion The lion may well sport a monocle, and the décor of mosaic tiles and lush greenery certainly has a postcolonial feel to it, but food at The Fine Lion, though downright delicious, is definitely not posh nosh, assures owners Matt and Belinda Lion.

I

think people hear the name and immediately conjure up silver service and Irish linen napery,” chuckles Matt. “But the truth of the matter is the

name’s a play on our name, and the building we’re in just happens to have a lion crest on the wall, so put it down to serendipity.”

Matthew defines The Fine Lion as a warm, welcoming eatery that offers casual, relaxed dining, a friendly bar, and for those wanting fabulous food in the comfort of their own homes, there’s also a takeaway service. The restaurant boasts a wrap-around balcony that seats up to 70 and overlooks the tree-lined thoroughfare of Ashburton’s main street below; it’s redolent of café life along Ōtautahi’s The Terrace, and Matt agrees. “Absolutely! We’ve bought a wee bit of Christchurch to Ashburton.” As Matt and Belinda also own the well-renowned Kelly’s Café & Bar, only 50 metres away, it’s fair to say there’s little they don’t know about the hospitality trade. Key to their success is having the

best people on board, such as former MasterChef NZ contestant and local caterer Chantelle Quinn. It was Chantelle, with the help of her chef brother Kinnear, who created the menu and helped set up the kitchen for The Fine Lion’s opening launch last November. She remains its business consultant and is to plan future menus, including winter and seasonal menus. Kinnear came from a restaurant in Melbourne to take up his position as Head Chef at The Fine Lion; yet another feather in Matt and Belinda’s entrepreneurial caps. Preheat oven to 200°C fan bake. Line two shallow roasting dishes with baking paper for easy cleanup. Arrange chicken, bacon and truss tomatoes on one tray. Sprinkle chicken with lemon zest, drizzle everything with oil and season with salt and pepper.

2

Arrange bread chunks on second tray, drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper to make croutons. Bake until chicken is fully cooked through (20 to 25 minutes). Allow to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. While chicken bakes, make Caesar Dressing. Heat oil and sizzle garlic and anchovies over a medium heat for about 30 seconds, mashing up anchovies to a paste. Add all remaining ingredients to pan and boil hard until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 2 minutes). Cool before use. The dressing will keep for a few days in a jar in the fridge. It thickens on cooling, so warm gently to loosen, or thin with a little water as desired.

Hilltop hotspot Comfy café by day and family-friendly restaurant experience in the evening, Sign of the Takahe is a destination neighbourhood local on the Port Hills. Soak in panoramic views across the city to the Southern Alps from the tranquil garden, or cosy up inside the beautifully renovated heritage building.

S

ign of the Takahe is everything you hope for when visiting a neighbourhood restaurant; a friendly welcoming atmosphere which delivers on exceptional taste and service. No matter if you visit the Hackthorne Road destination for brunch, dinner, a coffee or drink – you’ll keep wanting to go back. Owners Andrew and Kay Male started and invested in the business in 2019, and have changed it from a fine-dining restaurant to open it up to all with an upstairs bar, comfy seating and a more chilled out and relaxed vibe. “It’s a place where you feel naturally at ease; be it for a casual coffee, a business

brunch or a celebration of epic proportions,” says Andrew. “We have a welcome to all approach with a family friendly dining experience using local ingredients. “It’s a seasonal mix of Kiwi and European style cuisine, with some international flavours thrown in and all beautifully presented on the plate.” Earlier in the day, you’ll find crowd favourites like eggs benedict on potato hash with mushroom, bacon or salmon, as well as Belgian waffles and smashed edamame. In the evening, embrace the Kiwi- European fare with fresh seafood, generous steaks, New Zealand lamb, as well as favourites like gourmet burgers

and delightful pizzas. A fine selection of local beers and wine are served, too. Andrew says his dedicated head chef, Ryan, has created exceptional menus. “Ryan has been with us from the very very beginning and has put his heart and soul into making our dinner, wedding and function menus a tribute to the timeless New Zealand and European classics that people have come to know, love and adore.” As well as the menu items, 99 percent of the cabinet offering is baked in-house. The heritage building’s founder, well known naturalist Harry Ell, had a philisophy for the Takahe to be open to all. And Andrew and Kay have taken on this approach by providing a unique welcoming vibe. With scenic views over the city, it’s no wonder this is a popular spot for families and takes on a beer garden feel, especially at the weekends. Andrew says time stands still at the Takahe, and he’s not wrong; as soon as you walk in you melt into the relaxed, cosy vibe – and it’s easy to see how you could while away the hours over a coffee, drink or meal.

Weekly Central Bark Café regular Canterbury

Eco-friendly

Fluffies for fluffies The aptly named Central Bark Café is a haven for customers who wish to relax, indulge and meet likeminded pet owners. Locally owned and operated by Cantabrian Linda Ashworth, her goal is to create a destination café like no other in Christchurch.

Pet-friendly

Puppaccinos

ere you’ll not only find a tempting cabinet bursting with fluffy cheese scones and mouth-watering cheesecakes, but a menu awash with vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegetarian options. The café’s skilled baristas offer a wide selection of coffee (Halo Coffee), teas, smoothies, cold drinks, New Zealand wine and craft beer. And that’s just for humans - the real point of difference here is the doggy menu; pupcakes, freshly made dog biscuits, puppaccinos and made-to-order doggy birthday cakes! Paw-fect! Linda says Central Bark takes the role in helping to save the planet seriously, so you can dine at the café with a clear conscience. “We designed our café furniture couches from old 44-gallon drums which we had environmentally cleaned of their oil and then we recycled the drums into amazing comfy couches, we have minimised our plastic usage wherever possible using such items as eco-friendly coffee cups and vegan straws made from rice,” she says. Being part of Pet Central, this 11 Langdons Road locale also offers retail, grooming, daycare, training classes and even a luxury cat boarding hotel. Venture over for a dose of culinary cuteness! petcentral.co.nz/central-bark-cafe.html

Made from scratch It’s a place where nicknames are celebrated. Derek Morris, known as Bunco by his mates, thought that name was the perfect one for his new cafe in Amberley.

N

ot only that, but some of the mates get their own nickname recognition in the various brioche bun burgers that are the signature dish of the cafe – the Just Jon Burger, the Stiffy Burger and the Dirty Burger. Derek, a chef for many years in New Zealand, Australia and Canada, had a vision when he set up Bunco’s cafe last year - for tasty, home-style meals with everything made from scratch, just as mum does. And everything means everything – bread, brioche, sauces, pies, slices, custard squares, biscuits and cakes – even ice cream. “A true chef shouldn’t be opening bags,” says Derek. “I have a real passion for food

and hospitality. Part of that is interacting with my customers and getting to know them, as well as giving them delicious things to eat.” Derek caters for all tastes from the big appetite to the more health conscious, with a large gluten-free range too. You could have Bunco’s Big Breakfast with all the trimmings or the Vegan Smash for breakfast. For lunch; steak, egg and chips or a falafel bowl. You can’t miss Bunco’s on State Highway 1 in the middle of Amberley. The cafe is open seven days for breakfast and lunch up until 4pm. Pick a piquette

One old drink is gaining new popularity for its low alcohol content and fresh, light flavours. Meet piquette, the Centuries-old mellow and humble wine-ish beverage having its moment in the sun (again).

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

T

his drop is a low alcohol wine made from the second pressings of grape pomace (the pulpy residue after grapes have been crushed), mixed with water and left to ferment – creating a refreshing, earthy flavour and subtle fizz. Steeped in tradition, the brew dates back centuries where it was widely enjoyed throughout Europe, and in the 19th Century, was popular with farm and winery workers for lunch. More recently, piquette has taken off around the world as winemakers look to reduce waste and reuse the pomace created during winemaking, and consumers have – quite literally – lapped it up. In New Zealand, beer behemoths Garage Project have whipped up its Little Crush range, and Alex Craighead Wines’ canned Kindeli is gaining a following, too. Fans of pét-nat, another trending wine-but-not-as-you-know-it, may be drawn to piquette – but those who have never heard of either should also consider giving it a try, too. Watch this space, piquette is picked to become a trending drop of this year and beyond.

lassic clear and crystal styles will always have their place in the home, but a new breed of vase is well and truly on the scene: and it is structural, artistic and in-demand. As dried blooms continue their reign on interior aesthetics, we have more need for vases which remain on display. And, oh boy, have designers delivered. And

hell, forget the florals altogether if you must. A chic vase needs not some occupants to bring intrigue and artistry to your home. Excessive

vanity WORDS MORGAN TAIT

Few spaces in the home can induce as strong sense of sanctuary as a well put together bathroom. A space to unwind, wash off the day that’s been or prepare for the one ahead; bathrooms are often where we compose ourselves. So, it’s no wonder then, that what our bathrooms are composed of is so important.

nd when it comes to bathroom ingredients, one especially can be picked out: the vanity. Not just a countertop, vanities anchor the look and performance of a considered bathroom. Encompassing both functional storage and acting as an artistic centrepiece, you can let your vanity run away when choosing, redecorating, or styling your bathroom vanity. Floating vanities give off a pared back minimalistic feel, and heavier wooden styles play into French-country aesthetics. The use of natural stone like marble and granite amp up tranquillity and spavibes, subtle tones of pastel pinks, blues and greens adds refreshing, fun art deco elements and all-white aesthetics show us why Scandi-chic was a thing. When matched with chic tapware, stylish basins, and terrific tiling, your bathroom vanity quickly becomes an idyllic part of your daily routine.

Feeling blue The concept of a blue and grey colour scheme may seem a little chilly to many people, particularly for a living area. But, the finished result in this living room is charming, cosy and oh-so-modern in a strong blue and grey look, thanks largely to the dynamic, diagonally painted feature wall.

T Resene Athens Grey

Resene Stack

his design shows the key lies in using deep, warm tones, and adding plenty of natural textures and layers. It is painted in, from top, Resene Indian Ink, Resene Athens Grey and Resene Atmosphere, with flooring in Resene Stack. A velvet armchair and deep blue patterned rug warm up the look, with a bench in Resene Blue Night in semi-gloss – perfect on which to stack mid-century modern-inspired vases, decorative plants and the latest reads on architecture and interior inspiration. While triangles are one of the simplest feature wall effects, the structure and

colours of these triangles keep it from being overly cliché, giving a modern look to the room. Using the darker toned blue at the top of the wall, also adds cosiness by appearing to lower the wall height – imagine the difference if it was just one clear wall in white or grey. For an even more dramatic effect, the dark blue could also be used on the ceiling. The use of textured, tactile fabrics such as knits, rope, velvets and wool bring an immediate sense of warmth to the room, while the freshness of the plants and grey accessories keep it from being too dense and dark.

PAINT: Wall top triangle in Resene Indian Ink; middle triangle in Resene Athens Grey; bottom triangle in Resene Atmosphere; flooring in Resene Stack; ropey side table in Resene Indian Ink; bench in Resene Blue Night semi-gloss; small pot in Resene Eighth Tapa. ACCESSORIES: Candle, cushion, string of pearls and silver dollar vine plants from Shut the Front Door; chair, rug, vases, throw, fiddle leaf fig and Monstera leaf stems all from Freedom Furniture; Hydrangea Tassel cushion from Thread Design.

All these experts are on hand and ready to answer your specific questions.

E

xhibition Manager Bridget De Goldi says organisers are bracing themselves for huge demand as frustrated homeowners get stuck into their renovations. “Last year taught us that our homes are more important than ever,” she says. “Having a home that you love, as opposed to just having a house that you live in, are two totally separate things. “The Christchurch Home Show is here to help inspire and educate you on the best way to transform your home into an amazing place where you and your family can live, work and play.”

Passive Housing is really coming to the fore at the moment, says Bridget. “People want products in their houses that are thermally efficient, recyclable, and eco-friendly and to know they’ve made a good decision for themselves and for the environment. There’s a range of these products at the show to satisfy any thrifty, or greenmotivated homeowner.” And she says there is a huge move towards sustainable products throughout the show; renewable energy including solar, doubleglazing and high-performance glass – all things that can save you money while reducing your impact on the planet.

EXHIBIT NOW If you’re keen to exhibit in the Christchurch Home Show, it’s not too late to book some space to show off your home-related product or service to a motivated audience. The Christchurch Home Show is free to attend! See the website below for details, maps and timetables. www.canterburyhomeshow.co.nz Metropol 18 March, 2021 61

What about pots?

What to plant?

Bulbs love pots and with careful selection and large pots you can get successive flowerings all through spring. Or plant violas and pansies on top with bulbs underneath and let them pop up through the annuals. Plant in bulb mix and ensure good drainage with a few stones over the drainage holes. Check out our colour packs with four varieties in mix ‘n’ match colours to give coordinated colour flowering in succession – daffodils, freesias, hyacinths, and tulips.

Spring bulbs herald the start of the new season and you can extend the season easily by choosing the right bulbs daffodils, tulips, scented hyacinths and freesias, anemones and ranunculas, grape hyacinths, and snowdrops.

Where to plant?

Just about anywhere, from full sun to under deciduous trees where they’ll still get plenty of sun before the trees come back into leaf when the bulb season winds down. Avoiding midday sun helps the flowers last longer. While they don’t like drying out, good drainage keeps the bulbs firm and healthy. Note: scented hyacinths can even be grown indoors in bulb glasses over water – a great way to introduce children to easy gardening.

How to plant?

Generally, plant two to three times their own depth and two bulb widths apart, as soon as possible after purchase while the bulbs are still firm. Plant in drifts which gives the appearance of naturalisation. Which way is up? If in any doubt the guideline is to plant with the flattest side of the bulb down, and if you’re still not sure, plant them on their sides and they’ll sort themselves out. When planting in flower beds, use the purpose-designed bulb baskets to avoid digging them up all the time.

Spring bulbs herald the start of the new season and you can extend the season easily by choosing the right bulbs - daffodils, tulips, scented hyacinths and freesias, anemones and ranunculas,

What to feed and when?

Feed at any time the bulbs are showing growth above ground, right from when they emerge to just after flowering, using specifically formulated bulb food and bone meal. Later feeding builds up the reserves for the dormant season.

When to cut the foliage back?

Definitely not until it’s turned brown and dying off because the foliage builds up bulb reserves for next year.

Putting heart into homes The kitchen means so many things to so many people, and while the basic function of every kitchen is to serve as a food preparation area, the only limit is imagination when it comes to design. With 36 years in the joinery business, the team at Advanced Joinery has created every type of kitchen imaginable.

A

dvanced Joinery are proud winners of 2021 Canterbury Master Joiners, Joinery and Design Awards, Kitchen Design by Joiner Edward Bowden of Advanced Joinery, and Best Kitchen $40,000 plus, designed by Ingrid Geldof, both manufactured by Advanced Joinery. Managing Director Greg Ayers says: “We’ve been at the forefront of kitchen joinery while fashions change, lifestyles alter, and materials evolve. Our in-house designers listen to our specific clients’ needs and wants and every kitchen is bespoke, but the common element is that our kitchens fit the space, the space does not fit them.” Once the dream design is settled on, Greg and his team of craftsmen with their award-winning skill and experience

set to work bringing it to life. “Our kitchens stand out for their quality of build and materials. We are proud that nothing leaves the workshop anything less than excellent,” he says. The company is recognised within the industry, by the design and architecture profession, for their consistent excellence in producing quality joinery, says Greg. “The whole team’s focus is on service, extensive knowledge, professionalism, and a commitment to delivering on time.” Proud members of the New Zealand and Canterbury Master Joiners Associations, their craftsmanship is available in all internal joinery: kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and walk-in wardrobes, as well as internal doors and timber windows.

The art of joinery WORDS CHERLY COLLEY

It’s been an exciting few weeks for the Canterbury branch of Master Joiners with their inaugural awards taking place. “Our national body has been holding awards for a number of years and so has the Nelson branch,” says Canterbury President Nathan Busch.

S

o we thought it was high time Canterbury showcased the work and talent of the joiners in our region to raise the profile of our craft. It took some organising, but it has been worth all the effort with the quality of the entries we received.” Over thirty entries were submitted in nine categories: best apprentice; best benchtop;

best staircase; best speciality fit out; best door or window; best kitchen under $20,000; best kitchen $20,000 to $40,000; best kitchen $40,000-plus and best kitchen design. A panel of three judges – an architect and two interior designers – will use a range of criteria to determine the category winners - the level of workmanship and skill, the use of materials, the complexity of the project and the visual appeal of the completed work. Great photography, dressed and styled work, and the ability to tell a story about a project will be key to the success of the various entries. “We are delighted that members have embraced the opportunity to present some of the finest work from the industry in Canterbury and celebrate their innovation and excellence of design. This has also been a chance to encourage all members to use sustainable material in their work and to follow best practice.” The names of the winners in the nine categories will be released later this month.

Mastering joinery M

aster Joiners belong to one of the world’s oldest trades, dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries. Most of us have heard of Master Builders and Master Plumbers, but Master Joiners are perhaps not so well-known. A joiner is a skilled tradesperson who works with timber and board products to create constructions such as kitchens, doors, windows, staircases and counters. It is an area of professionalism and craftsmanship. Joiners are represented in New Zealand by the Master Joiners Federation which has 10 regional associations, including one in Canterbury. As a group they aim to promote the Master Joiners brand encouraging customers to use joiners who are masters of their trade, producing high standards of workmanship. Membership of the Federation has benefits not only for customers, but for the joiners themselves. It bestows credibility and the interaction and sharing of information with fellow joiners is also invaluable.

No pane, no gain! Autumn is the perfect season to ensure you’ve got your condensation under control, and if that means new windows – it’s important to choose a joiner who can preserve the look of your home while ensuring drafts and moisture are kept out. Bates Joinery follows the highest possible standard in New Zealand when it comes to manufacturing windows.

wner Mark Allworthy has run the business since 2008, and says his team is well known for their kitchen work, timber stairs and shop fit outs – but specialise in manufacturing windows and timber doors, too. “A lot of people in Christchurch have old character villas with timber frame windows,” he says. “If they are doing renovations, we can ensure the frames protect from moisture and drafts while retaining the original character of the home.” In new builds, Mark and his team follow Master Joiner New Zealand’s highest protocol of window manfacture, JMF4211, which in some instances can be the difference between the home passing its council building inspection. The protocol is only available for members of the industry association, which holds members to the high standards of overall skill and professionalism. “I’ve become fascinated with art history and the idea of curatorial work. I’d like to find a way to continue pursuing these and to find a balance between teaching and my own art practice. I think the two things feed into and complement each other. Painting, for me, creates a deep sense of joy, which I try to bring into teaching. WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TEACHING AT ART METRO, AND WHAT BRINGS YOU THE MOST JOB SATISFACTION?

T

Down by the river In the four years Narielle A’Court ran her market stall at Akaroa, too often customers related their experiences of buying so-called New Zealand made from giftshops, only to find when they got home that it wasn’t.

heir stories inspired the glass jewellery artist to open The Artisan Lab at Little River. “I thought there had to be an easier way to showcase genuine New Zealand works. We’ve so many talented people out there,” she says. True to its business ethos, The Artisan Lab is 100 percent Kiwi made, with over 30 Banks Peninsula artisans showcasing their woollens, ceramics, paintings, glass jewellery, earthquake-recycled rimu ware and so much more. She also offers a variety of clothing spanning from babies to girls and boys, ladies’ bags to children’s accessories. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that supporting local is essential in creating thriving communities. So, make your way over to Little River to browse the bespoke boutique and with a purchase take solace in the fact you’ll be supporting talented local artisans in the process. nside, Mazda’s simplistic Kodo design philosophy is everywhere. CX-9 Takami benefits over the standard Limited spec with niceties like the option of either pure white or walnut brown nappa leather heated and ventilated seats. These seats also feature a new design with quilting, piping and stitch colour change. You also get shift paddles, wireless charging, and a larger 10.25inch multi-information display housing the latest generation MZD touchscreen infotainment system. It is very intuitive and easy to read. Also, the Bose stereo system sounds sweet.

Driving to Balcairn and back, the 2021 CX-9 Takami feels so planted. Plus, a lack of road noise and sumptuous ride comfort was very impressive. The 2.5L turbo four pot with 170kW and 420Nm of torque was also very quiet. Keep it in the sweet spot between 1600 and 3000rpm, and it pulls quite nicely. At $70,890 plus ORC, the CX-9 Takami is quite well priced considering the level of refinement you get is usually reserved to high end SUVs costing twice as much. You could do a lot worse than this one.

All electric Jag

WORDS BEN SELBY

Jaguar have announced it will become an all-electric brand. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced last month its Jaguar arm will cease production of petrol and diesel cars by 2025, producing only electric powered vehicles.

T

he move to go full electric comes after JLR management outlined a zeroemission business plan, named Reimagine, which it hopes to achieve by 2039. The plan comes after pressure from many countries for mainstream car makers to severely reduce their carbon footprint and emissions. As a result, Jaguar have

announced it will be spending a hefty $4.8 billion NZD a year on electric only platforms and technology for its new car line up. Jaguar have also announced its XJ saloon will not be renewed as an EV, stating the iconic luxury car will be discontinued after 50-plus years in production. A statement from JLR says: “Following

a thorough technology review against the exponential change in the automotive industry, we concluded that the planned XJ replacement does not fit with our vision for a reimaged Jaguar brand.” JLR have also announced Land Rover will follow suit by also producing electric only vehicles by 2030.

HYBRID MINDS Since 2018, Lexus sales of hybrid vehicles have pretty much doubled. Last year saw close to 70 percent of new Lexus buyers opt for a hybrid over petrol. And it’s no surprise - the gains for going hybrid are considerable.

U

nlike plug-in electric cars, you have the benefit of the battery constantly charging as the petrol and electric motor work in harmony together. It doesn’t matter whether you are cruising, slowing down, or braking, the system is constantly recovering and storing energy for use later. You can also remain in silent full electric, or EV mode up to speeds of 50km/h.

Delivery of power, thanks to hybrid drive, is more linear thanks to that extra helping of the low-down torque electric drive can provide. The hybrid system also reduces your carbon footprint by emitting significantly less emissions than a conventional petrol engine. Add all of these features together, and you aren’t dipping into your wallet as

much when at the pump. Lexus have a knack for getting the harmony of petrol and Hybrid power pretty much spot on. This tech has been part of the Lexus SUV family for almost two decades now, debuting with the original RX400h in 2004. It’s a small wonder sales of Lexus Hybrid vehicles are on the up. www.lexus.co.nz/en/dealers/christchurch

Go Further

The driving position is still nigh on perfect and those Recaro sports seats provide racing car like support while still being very comfortable

he current generation has been with us since 2017 and was the first Type R to be sold new in New Zealand. It also quickly set the standard which all would-be hot hatches were judged against. For 2021, there have been subtle changes, but all of them welcome. A bigger front grille increases cooling for the 228kW/400Nm 2L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which happens to be a real peach. There are also redesigned front and rear carbon splitters to aid with downforce at speed. Underneath, you get remapped engine software, improved dampers and tweaked suspension bushes, making for a more comfortable ride around town. You can also have your Type R in the new Boost Blue paint scheme, which looks simply epic from all angles. The driving position is still nigh on perfect and those Recaro sports seats provide racing-car-like support while still being very comfortable. Also, the interior is awash with added Type R-ness, including red seat belts, a new alcantara wrapped steering wheel, and a new gear lever for the six-speed manual box which harks back to the classic EK9 Civic Type R and DC2 Integra. In Comfort mode, the Type R actually rides a bit better than before. Also new is Active Noise Control which increases the turbo four pot engine note through the stereo speakers. In Sport, you can still have

serious fun, but where the Type R really shines is in R Plus mode. Each throw of the six-speed box is like loading a bolt action rifle. Every down change is accompanied with a blip of the throttle to simulate a heel and toe shift. Honestly, with so many hot hatches deferring to an auto box these days, it’s so refreshing, and so satisfying swapping cogs around yourself. Build the boost up to around 4500rpm and hang on. While not violent by any means, it still surges forward with enough power to give you the giggles. The Brembo brakes have also been improved, allowing you to pull up quicker and smoother than before. While you can devour the twisty stuff at a considerable rate in Comfort mode, naturally Sport and R Plus are best. The Type R constantly coaxes you to push harder and turn in sharper. Keep it in the sweet spot between 2500 and 5000rpm, work that delightful manual box, and this road going adrenaline pump just flies. The Type R also comes with a new performance datalogger system. Called LogR, it allows you to monitor your driving in terms of performance, both on track and off, via the LogR App on your smartphone. The $62,990 Civic Type R is still capable of getting under your skin. Make no bones about this one, it’s just as intoxicating as ever.

MAKING ART OUT OF

WORDS NICHOLAS HENARE | PHOTOS JACK MORGAN @SHOTSBYJACK_

As you are cornering the hill section from Akaroa to Christchurch, you are very aware there is something special at play. Perhaps it is the monster M twin turbo V8 engine with M differential and electric power steering, or perhaps it’s the luxury cabin. It’s probably everything.

I

The eight speed M steptronic transmission is so smoother than silk.

guess that’s why BMW sales have jumped 50 percent in the year to December, and why it’s the only premium car brand to register 2000plus cars in New Zealand last year. The BMW X6 has 460kW of power with 750Nm of torque. That is something similar to the top line of any luxury sports cars and wow, you can really feel it. The eight speed M steptronic transmission is so smoother than silk. The luxury cabin has leather merino seating, lumbar support and cooling system meaning your journey is done in pure comfort. That’s the package you’re getting for $231,900 though. Everything is top of the line. With high roof rails in high gloss shadowline, the 21-inch bi colour alloy rims and that beautiful downward slope on the tail - you’ve got an SUV which almost overloads the senses. The team at Christchurch BMW joked about telling the police I was on the road and to keep an eye out for me. But you really do need to keep an eye on your speedometer. New Zealand is getting a great variety of BMWs hitting our shores, I caught up with Karol Abrasowicz-Madej, Managing Director at BMW Group New Zealand, to chat about it. “2020 has been an extraordinary year for all of us, but we adapted to the times,” he says. “Our team pivoted our campaigns to boost the spirits of New Zealanders even as we entered lockdown, and further extended our offers to give customers more value.” The X6 is just one of a plethora of great vehicles heading our way and who can’t get

excited by the M3 and M4 heading our way with new kidney grills and flared rear tails. Love it or hate it (I love it) the new changes are just pushing a great brand forward and when you’re sitting at the top of Sugarloaf watching the sunset behind a beautiful piece of machinery like the X6 M competition, you really are grateful that there is a designer out there making art out of a machine.

Crossing the Yaris WORDS BEN SELBY

The trend of turning small hatchbacks into small SUVs just keeps growing. It was only a matter of time before Toyota did the same thing to the Yaris. This brings us to the Yaris Cross, a Yaris hatch with a difference.

W

hile sharing the same TNGA-B platform, the Cross is 240mm longer and 90mm taller than the Yaris Hatch. You also get 30mm

more ground clearance too. My test car was the range topping Limited Hybrid. Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre three pot petrol engine with 88kW mated

to a hybrid electric system with 85kW. Toyota claim combined fuel consumption figures of 3.8L/100km, although the best I managed to average was around 4.7L/100km. The interior is pretty much identical to the hatch, and you get a tonne of kit as standard, like a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitor, lane tracing assist, radar cruise control, emergency steering assist and crosswind assist.

With the Limited, you also get additional goodies like electric heated front seats, leather steering wheel and extra USB charging ports. On the move, the Cross is not quite as entertaining as the hatch, but it’s still very comfortable and happiest when cruising. The range starts at $29,990 for the entry level GX petrol, whereas my Limited Hybrid retails for $38,990. The Yaris Cross is a Yaris SUV we never thought we needed but glad exists.
