Ending on a high note Award-winning Canterbury performer Ali Harper is not letting a year of pandemic postponements stop her. She is determined to end the year on a high note by performing two shows in December.

he first show, Christmas Joy will be held on December 5, followed by four performances of The Look of Love on December 17 to 19. Both shows will be performed at The Piano. In previous years, her Christmas concerts have sold out – and she promises 2020 will be better than before as she shares the stage with special guest and much-loved violinist Fiona Pears, Connor Hartley-Hall on guitar and 70 glorious voices from the Cobham Intermediate School Chorale all led by Musical Director and pianist Andy Manning. “I adore this time of year and this year’s Christmas is focusing on love and gratitude,”

she says. “The fragility of life has shown up for all of us this year. By creating a little bit of magic and lightening hearts through the beauty of music is what I think we all need at this time.” Then it’s third time lucky for The Look Of Love - a musical feast for the heart and soul via the full spectrum of Burt Bacharach’s hit songs with muysical arranger Tom Rainey. “Before lockdown Tom and I were able to record and release The Look of Love album and debut the show at Nelson’s Theatre Royal,” says Ali. “Then our Christchurch dates had to be postponed due to Covid-19, not once but

The king’s coming to town

Tūranga is set to become alive with the sound of music when the New Zealand Opera’s critically acclaimed Eight Songs for a Mad King comes to town.

Eight Songs for a Mad King explores the complicated relationship between mental health and power. This rendition reimagines Maxwell Davies’ king as a corporate everyman. Actor, screenwriter, theatre-maker, wife, supermum – Sophie Henderson wears a lot of hats. But as comfortably and effortlessly as she wears them, it took some time to get used to the ﬁt of the latter. 12 26 November, 2020 Metropol

was terrified of becoming a mum and losing myself so tried to live nine months like it was my last,” she laughs about unexpectedly falling pregnant with Matilda – now four – while living in Melbourne. While some find comfort in a large tub of ice cream and others start nesting, Sophie wrote a script! Now, another whole baby later, that script is playing out across cinemas throughout the country. Baby Done stars Kiwi comedian Rose Matafeo opposite Harry Potter star Matthew Lewis and was executive produced by none other than Taika Waititi. Like the little people that inspired the storyline, the film too was a joint effort, with Sophie’s husband Curtis Vowell directing. The stellar line-up of supporting cast includes Madeleine Sami and Emily Barclay. You know the movies where the lead characters fall in love, get married, get pregnant and it’s smooth sailing from there on in? Baby Done is nothing like that. “My hope is that Baby Done surprises

and delights audiences, pushing their limit of what’s acceptable for a pregnant woman to do,” Sophie says. “I was not a well-behaved pregnant woman, and this is not a well-behaved film.” Greenlit when Sophie was pregnant with number two (Silvie, now two-yearsold), Baby Done is a “warm-hearted, edgy and comedic take on an old problem in new times”. “We were excited to have a baby,” husband Curtis says. “But we were also completely and utterly unprepared. The unknown of how we were going to prepare for a child and what impact it would have on our lives began to sink in and we basically freaked out!” Their experience of impending parenthood was “a comedy with a quiet streak of despair,” Curtis laughs. “We promise not all of Baby Done is about us, but we relate to the self-denial that comes with growing up and the feeling that you might lose yourself when you turn into a mum and dad. And like Zoe, Sophie thinks she can do anything pregnant!” We think she probably can, based on the simple fact she has just brought a film to fruition, while juggling not just one, but two little “life changers”. Written over more than two years, the film was then shot over six weeks in April 2019 before heading into post-production for a year – then of course Covid-19 held up the release. There’s not a lot of time for rest yet either, with other projects in the works for Sophie (including a film called Workmates about her time working at Auckland’s Basement Theatre) and Baby Done set to be released in the UK and US in January. While the storyline was written to put her concerns about the possibility of losing part of herself when she became someone’s mum, its production actually gave Sophie a special part of herself to cling onto. “I’m not gonna lie, it was really hard work,” she says of making a film with little people underfoot. “Part of writing the film was to prove to myself that I could still fulfil my dreams as a filmmaker. I felt like I was running out of time to do these things and didn’t want to lose my old self. But those irrational fears come true in the first year; you do lose your sense of self and I was really holding onto this film to hold onto that. “I also wouldn’t recommend making a film with a two-year-old and a threemonth-old,” she laughs. But much like parenting itself, the hard work of creating a world from your imagination is worth every single sleepless night. “It brings me absolute joy,” Sophie says. “You fall in love with the characters, you want to do whatever it takes to look after them and you just don’t want it to end.”

POINTE Christchurch-raised ballet dancer, Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson, has returned from ten years dancing in the US due to Covid-19 and taken up a position with the Royal New Zealand Ballet. He tells Morgan Tait what it’s like to be a performer amidst a pandemic.

“T

he biggest way that Covid-19 has affected me is that it has brought me home. It has always been hard to be away from my family, so once Covid-19 hit I got on a plane to come back very quickly. “The impact of losing shows this year has been really hard. I joined the Royal New Zealand Ballet for the rescheduled season of Venus Rising. The show was ready to open. It was gut-wrenching to have it cancelled and slip from our grasp like that. Some of the dancers had been working

on it for nine months. “A ballet can quickly become a part of you. When you learn a ballet you spend 40 hours a week working on it, and often take it home with you to study at night, you condition your body to be ready for the most difficult steps — it becomes your world. “There’s also a really big physical and emotional release you get when you finally open a show, it’s like the dance has been bottled up inside you for months and then you finally share it with an audience and

the experience is no longer just yours, it’s electric. It is funny because I usually forget the steps of many ballets soon after we finish performing them, but with Venus Rising, I still feel like I could do that program right now if I was asked to perform it tonight. It’s unfinished business. “It’s my fourth time performing the iconic ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, and each time I’ve gotten to tackle different roles, so it is fun to keep coming back to it from different angles.”

I love performing, it’s my favourite thing ever and I actually feel proud of myself, as I sing, so it’s a good feeling. When I play music and when I sing, I don’t really tic at all so it’s just that kind of safe space and when I play, I just feel relaxed.

nalise’s single, Made in New Zealand, was made in lockdown. With the help of her mentor, high profile New Zealand musician and producer, Tiki Taane, the 15-year-old used the time and space to write and record the song about Aotearoa’s efforts to stamp out Covid-19. “I actually really enjoyed lockdown, I went for walks and I was really productive. I made lots of music,” she says. Released last month, the pandemic prompted piece – which even features a cameo of Dr Ashley Bloomfield in its video – will donate all royalties to the Tourette’s Association of New Zealand (TANZ). The Christchurch-based organisation was founded by Analise’s mother, Robyn, to support those with the complex condition and their families, as well as educating the wider community. “I was really proud of New Zealand,” says Analise. “We’ve overcome

earthquakes, fires and Covid-19, and look at us now, we’re doing great.” Although lockdown allowed Analise to spend lots of time listening to and making music, the uncertain period triggered the involuntary movements and noises caused by the disorder. Diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome at nine, Analise says she has a love-hate relationship with it. “It’s not like anything that people see on TV or social media, there is so much more to Tourette’s than what people say. It’s not just swearing at all. It’s like you don’t have control over your body.” Analise is passionate about helping people with Tourette’s and educating others so children do not grow up with the same misconceptions she experienced – and she wants to use her music to help do so. “If I work with music, I also want to work with mental health and Tourette’s,” says the Hagley School of Music student who picked up a guitar for the first time at the age of seven. “I love performing, it’s my favourite thing ever and I actually feel proud of myself, as I sing, so it’s a good feeling. “When I play music and when I sing, I don’t really tic at all so it’s just that kind of safe space and when I play, I just feel relaxed.” Amid a pandemic, charitable donations are harder to come by, so Analise’s single will raise money for TANZ’s annual Camp Twitch. And, if possible, allow for two camps to happen in 2021. It was attending the camp where Analise met four of her best friends, who now form the band, The Lunatics. Robyn says she started TANZ after Analise’s diagnosis revealed a lack of information about the disorder here. Camp Twitch is a special priority. “It’s a safe place for them and no one’s judging them. You not only looked phenomenal at Cup Day, but you were a judge for the fashion competition at the New Zealand Cup Meeting on Saturday. In your opinion, what makes a winning race day outfit? One word – effort. It’s about that perfect recipe of dress or separates, hats and accessories. I always admire the time, energy and often, money, people put into their race day fashion to achieve a polished look. What trends or new looks did you see coming through this year, and why did those stand out for you? Every year hats are getting bolder and bigger: Fascinators are now taking a back seat and almost look wimpy compared to the large hats and highly decorated headbands. I thought Covid-19 may see a quietening of race day fashion, but I think the reverse happened everyone went all out!

com. I am so happy to be in Rangiora, it has been wonderful working from a smaller town, and the people are so welcoming. How would you describe your personal style? My personal style is all about prints, I often complain that my own wardrobe has so much action and not enough quiet! I am a total magpie in that I love anything sparkly, bright and printed. We’re at the start line of summer. What are some of the seasonal styles you’re observing, or predicting, we will see for summer 2020/2021? I continue to be surprised as to how animal print continues its reign every year and this summer is no different, but with cheetah and right through into accessories and scarves as well. I am also seeing a lot of white coming through. A top to toe white look can be so fresh for the festive season. As we mature, our tastes and personal preferences evolve, too, but there have long been conflicting stereotypes around women dressing “too young” or “too frumpy”. What is your advice for women to help them embrace new stages of life, without losing their style? The only thing we really need to consider as we age is very short hemlines and cleavage. Other than that, I think women don’t need to be too worried about dressing their age. I have sold some of our most flamboyant looks to women over 70. It’s about having a level of confidence to own it and not apologise. Confidence when it comes to fashion is half the battle. If you have the confidence, I say own it! What is your go-to style tip for anyone, whether they are already a fashionista or someone looking to evolve their wardrobe? Buy the dress, but own the look!

Hallelujah! For 30 years Christchurch City Choir (CCC) has enchanted audiences with its annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, and following a year of disruption, this exultant masterpiece returns to the stage – with the presence of some returned overseas talent. NZ based soprano, Anna Pierard, and mezzo-soprano, Catrin Johnsson, will perform alongside overseas based tenor, Oliver Sewell, and bass-baritone, Paul Whelan, who have both returned home due to Covid-19 restrictions. These four internationally renowned soloists will sing

with the 100-voice choir (including members of the Christchurch Youth Choir), and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), under the baton of Dr John Linker. The history of CCC is 125 years strong, culminating in the 1990 merger of the Christchurch Harmonic Society and the Royal

Christchurch Music Society. Paul Whelan’s CCC association goes way back. His mother toured Europe with the Christchurch Harmonic Society when Paul was a baby. “CCC has been going for a long time; it’s provided a strong sense of community and friendships. Choirs are so good for health – to make harmony with other people is a fantastic thing. For audiences, a choir going full blast, especially something like Messiah, it’s a deeply visceral experience.” Some of the biggest names in New Zealand music have performed with CCC, including Dame Malvina Major, the Choir’s Patron, Simon O’Neill and CCC’s first conductor, Brian Law. Board member Jo Dodgshun joined the choir in 1972. She

remembers when Brian Law took over the choir 30 years ago. “One of the attractions in taking on the role was his being able to conduct at the Town Hall; Brian’s first concert there was Messiah.” Jo says planning the performance programme through 2021 and beyond is nearing completion and there’s much to look forward to. “What I love about CCC is that it gets to tackle big symphonic works with the full choir and orchestra. We do incredible concerts, like the Proms with the CSO…and to be singing Messiah in our beautiful Town Hall again… that’s absolutely wonderful!” Handel’s Messiah, 7.30pm, Saturday December 12 at the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium, Christchurch Town Hall. www.citychoir.co.nz

So, you’ve spring cleaned your home, re-organised your wardrobe and sorted your summer skincare – but it might also be time to declutter your makeup bag. We look at what to keep, what to chuck (and when), and what to add.

f you’re a lover of makeup, chances are that you have more than one type of mascara, lipstick and any other beauty product in your makeup draw. And if so, there is an even higher chance your makeup mountain is looking a bit cluttered. Which is all very well (a

ROAST CHICKEN SALAD Toss shredded roast chicken with fresh thyme, a dash of lemon juice, cherry tomatoes, garlic, cooked streaky bacon, green beans, croutons, parsley, mint and spring onions. Dress with extra virgin olive oil, the wholegrain mustard and a few good swigs of apple cider vinegar.

Ingredients base ¾ cup dried coconut ½ cup almonds ½ cup buckwheat or rolled oats ¾ cup dates, softened in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes, then drained 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted 1 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp vanilla bean paste or extract Pinch of sea salt filling ½ cup cashew butter 1 overripe banana 3 tbsp coconut oil, melted 2 tbsp honey ½ tsp vanilla bean paste or extract Pinch of sea salt Pulp of 3 passionfruit to serve Coconut yoghurt Pulp of 1 passionfruit Drizzle of honey

PREP TIME: 25 MINUTES SETTING TIME: 2 HOURS

Method

in the freezer, where they will keep for up to four months. When you are wanting to eat a slice, allow about 10 to 15 minutes for it to thaw.

To make the base, place the coconut, almonds and buckwheat into a blender or food processor, and blend until you have a rough flour.

Pour the filling over the base and bang the tin on the bench top a couple of times to get rid of any air bubbles and get a smooth finish.

Add the remaining ingredients, and blend until you have a cookie-dough consistency. Line a tart tin with beeswax wraps or cling film, and press the base into the tin, using the back of a spoon.

Spoon the passionfruit pulp over the filling, and with the handle of a spoon or a wooden skewer gently make a ripple effect.

Press the mixture up the sides to create a crust. Set aside. To make the filling, place all of the ingredients, except for the passionfruit pulp, into the blender or food processor, and blend until smooth.

Place the slice in the freezer for two hours, to set. Once the slice is set, remove it from the freezer, and top it with coconut yoghurt, passionfruit, and a drizzle of honey. Cut it into slices and enjoy. Store the slices in an airtight container

INGREDIENTS Lamb 2 x Quality Mark 8 bone lamb racks, trimmed of any silver skin oil for rubbing Smoked paprika mayonnaise 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 cup olive oil lemon juice, to taste 1 teaspoon good quality smoked paprika (we used bittersweet smoked paprika)

TO SERVE 1 punnet watercress micro greens Smoked paprika mayonnaise Place the egg yolks and Dijon mustard in the bowl of a small food processor. Process until combined, then very slowly drizzle in the olive oil. Add lemon juice as the mixture thickens. Season with salt and more lemon juice to taste. Stir through the smoked paprika. Transfer to a bowl, cover and keep in the fridge.

Lamb Heat a barbecue plate until hot. Rub lamb racks with a little oil and season. Place on the barbecue, fleshside-down and barbecue for 3-4 minutes. Turn racks (on to bones), cover each with foil and barbecue for a further 15 minutes, for lamb that is only slightly pink. he 20-year-old architecturally-designed home has had a lifechanging renovation of meticulous detail by DJ Hewitt Builders. This was in close collaboration with local Spatial Design firm Detail by Davina Sutton, who says the tired bathrooms and a closed-in kitchen needed an inviting revamp, with a nod to the home’s original features. A kitchen of streamlined contrast is now more open to appear larger and visually

flows to the living room. The integrated fridge and breakfast bar are concealed behind bespoke softly textured cupboards. The extra-wide island creates room for both the induction hob and sink. The striking Caesar Stone benchtop was framed to stand out, by a matte dark-stained veneered surround. The result, a feeling of freshness and space, with plenty of hideaway storage features. Davinia says people are really reflecting on how they use their kitchens and re-designing the

busy family hub to be so much easier to work in and keep tidy. Clean lines, without appearing cold, was the kitchen and the bathroom brief, utilising contrasting neutral palettes. The bathroom, ensuite and powder room received a refined and elegant makeover with excellent use of space. Whites against the charcoalgrey Italian tiles added moody layers of depth to sharp lines. The European moulded solidsurface basins, vanities and undermounted bath were custom-made for a quick easy

clean. These bespoke features befitted a high standard of craftmanship. “Daryl and his subcontractors were fantastic,” Davinia says. “They take on a vision with excellence of workmanship and problem solving, while working as a team to respect and appreciate the design.” She highlights a perfect outcome is where the designer and the builders collaborate well together for the client, and a common outcome. “I couldn’t ask for better, and the results show this.” www.djhewitt.co.nz

Happiness

After a long year, a lot of change and an extraordinary property market, it’s time for me to take a breath.

Devote time to family and friends – I’ve found family and friends to be absolute saviours and having a son who can’t return to his occupation in the Northern Hemisphere is a cause for celebration for myself and John!

November, the month where I normally start to wind-up, plan and prepare, has found me weary and eager for the end of the year to arrive.

Express gratitude – yup, be grateful. It’s hard, but the entitlement I’ve observed at times in 2020 is not nice. It’s time to show some grace – and it’s worth it.

Planning for summer – planning full-stop – has always been an integral part of my life. Lists, always lists, long ones that would follow me around … and me ceaselessly working through them, adding large double ticks to indicate tasks that had been completed. I know I’m not alone in this listmaking habit and the weariness that comes as a result is equally noticeable in friends and colleagues.

Make physical activity a habit – nothing to add here, we all know it’s a good idea.

This year has seen so many changes. In fact, 2020 has been the most unusual of years and all of us will have learnt from it. I’ve decided, out of wisdom and a certain fatigue, that this summer I’d rather rest than rush. I’d also like to focus on a number of insights and strategies that I learnt recently whilst participating in a wellness seminar facilitated and attended by some magical people. The topics of self-awareness, compassion and connection all came under review. As did the observation that happiness springs from several simple elements (so simple that we tend to overlook them) that contribute to a good life. Now I’m not only practicing them; I’m sharing them with anyone who cares to choose more happiness.

Instead, many of us spend more time on social media than on exercise and more time looking at our cellphones than at the faces of the people we’re with.

So here are a couple according to Lyubomirsky (2007) whose studies have identified that the happiest people usually practice the following:

Finally, happy people are often the first to offer others a helping hand despite having their own share of issues. How simple are these habits? So simple, in fact, that we often forget to practice them ourselves.

So prioritise and practice these habits, as will I whilst I balance and move through the 100 plus auctions our company still has ahead of us before the end of the year in a market that continues to roar. 2020 has delivered some enormous personal challenges as well as some professional highs, but rather than shout ‘next’, I’m choosing to whisper ‘thanks’.

Repetition & rhythm While there will always be artistic styles that experience waxing and waning popularity, the artwork you choose for your space should feel very personal. Whether you opt for an investment piece or simply want to display something that holds sentimental value, the key is picking something that really speaks to you – or something you at least enjoy looking at.

nce you’ve found a piece that you really love, why not use it to inspire a colour palette for the room in which you’ll be hanging it? This modern garden room or conservatory features an original artwork by Hannah Jensen, one of many artists who paints her works using Resene products. If you are unsure what colours are used in the artwork you own, you can always upload a photo or scan of your piece to the Resene Colour Palette Generator, www.resene.com/ palettegenerator. The generator creates a Resene colour palette based on the most common colours in the image and advises

a proportion for colour use. From there, you can download swatches to start fleshing out your design scheme. One clever idea is to use the shape of your artwork to create similar shapes on your walls. In this space, an arch has been painted in Resene Alabaster over a background in Resene Flotsam. Then, repeat the same shape throughout the room to create a sense of continuity. Here, the rice paper lantern, the table, the vases and the wheels of the cart carry the theme throughout the space. In the same way round shapes have been repeated, so have colours. The wall at the right in Resene Polo Blue and the vase on the table in Resene Time Out bring the main colour of the artwork further into the space. To bridge the gap between the lightest colour in the room (Resene Alabaster), the darkest colour (Resene Bunting) and the grey of Resene Flotsam, Resene Link Water was used on the chairs, small vases and plant pots to link together the entire colour palette. And, the decision to stick to a tonal scheme gives the artwork more visual space to shine.

Summer is so close you can taste it. The festive season is almost upon us with holidays and of course Christmas. As holiday mode takes hold, enjoy relaxing evenings in the garden with a hose in one hand and a drink in the other!

KITCHEN GARDEN 1.

This is a time of rapid growth so ensure you pay attention to watering, weeding, feeding and spraying.

You can still sow seeds such as beans, beetroot, parsnip, radish, lettuce, spinach, and sweetcorn directly into the soil. Sow seeds every two weeks to ensure you have a continuous harvest.

Plant seedlings of lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, tomato, pumpkin, courgette, capsicum, and cucumber.

Plant seedlings such as chrysanthemum, dianthus, portulaca and salvia.

Roses and perennials can still be planted. Just ensure the new plantings are well watered. Remove dead flowers from roses to encourage new blooms.

Lift spring flowering bulbs once the leaves have died down completely and store in a cool dry place.

A layer of mulch around the base of garden shrubs will conserve moisture and protect from the sun.

Protect plants from caterpillars with Derris Dust or an organic caterpillar control. Be aware of slugs and snails in both the kitchen and flower gardens and keep an eye on any nasty insects on plants as they will multiply in warm weather. Be vigilant in removing the laterals off your tomatoes once a week or you will end up with out of control plants. Ensure the plants are firmly staked and water regularly.

Growing a summer garden

Fill pots with flowering annuals such as petunias, marigolds, or impatiens for a bright Christmas and summer display. Keep up watering in warm weather.

LAWNS 1.

Don’t forget the lawn. Raise the lawn mower up a level for the summer season. If cut too short lawns will dry out more quickly.

Water the lawn early in the morning so it can absorb the water during the day.

Apply fast acting lawn food to keep lawns fresh and green.

Through our Canterbury Business Champions campaign, we have heard some amazing stories of innovation, nimbleness, determination, collaboration and kindness, and together celebrated what it is that makes our business community so unique. While in a “normal” year we would showcase our local champions at our Westpac Champion Business Awards, given the uncertainty of running events during Covid-19, this year we evolved the celebration and took it online to collectively champion all businesses – as there has never been a better time to share positive stories about our business community than right now. This provided a great platform to be able to share some of the region’s best kept secrets. Such as 27Seconds, a local wine producer that gives away 100 percent of the organisation’s profits to help survivors of slavery. Or out-of-school care provider MASH Kids that during lockdown adapted by creating MASH Nannies and Babysitters. And motorcycle touring company South Pacific Motorcycle Tours which used to cater solely to international tourists, but now offers motorcycle servicing and repairs, rentals, and a maintenance workshop, as well as organising events and tours. These stories demonstrate the innovation and drive that Waitaha Canterbury has become known for. November is always a big month for us with the Bloom Festival embracing a range of activities, including NZ Cup and Show Week. We certainly missed the A&P Show, which had to be cancelled earlier in the year, but the fact that we are able to celebrate all the other festivities and look forward to Christmas and the New Year with confidence, means we have got something right. And that’s the approach we took as a team of five million. We are bearing the fruits of our collective efforts where others in the world are returning to lockdown conditions. For the first time since March, we’ve been able to celebrate our new citizens in a more memorable way than a certificate simply arriving in the mail. The resounding applause spoke volumes of how much we mean to each other, and what we can achieve when we work together for the greater good. So, as we begin moving into the Christmas season and start looking forward to end-of-year parties and festivities with work colleagues, friends and families I urge you all to keep up the good work that has got us to our fortunate position. Keep up the hand washing and keep tracking where you go with the Covid-19 tracer app. If you feel unwell, stay at home, and if you have symptoms, get tested. If we, as the team of five million, do all those things, then we can continue to come together and celebrate the occasions and the events that mean so much to us.

On St Asaph Street, outside the Metro Sports Facility site, we now have work underway to install New Zealand’s first Wastewater Heat Recovery System. Showers, sinks, dishwashers, washing machines and even toilets all result in hot water going down the drain. This lifts the temperature of the major wastewater pipe running down St Asaph Street to a useful 17°C. With this system we will be able to capture and recycle this otherwise wasted energy to help heat the pools and building. Part of the St Asaph Street wastewater pipe flow will be redirected into a building in the Metro Sports Facility’s car park. The sewage will be “screened” to filter unwanted material and enable the flow to pass through a heat exchanger. By using an exchanger, fresh warm water can be supplied to the Facility’s heat pumps while ensuring there is no contact between the sewage and the pools. This waste heat recovery project will provide significant benefits to the Christchurch community by re-using waste heat energy that has already been paid for to produce approximately 3500kW of energy per annum for heating at the Metro Sports Facility, which is the equivalent of powering up to 2000 homes per day. This will result in a saving of around $100,000 a year compared to groundwater sourced heating and help lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Too often in Christchurch and Canterbury we underestimate our performance and influence, as a city and a region. We also have a tendency to understate our achievements. I think this comes from the natural conservatism of our people. When you get outside Christchurch and look back in, it’s easy to gain an appreciation of all the good things we have going for us. Being conservative is not a bad thing, but there are times when a community needs to stand up and openly celebrate its place in the world. That time is now for greater Christchurch. We are poised on the edge of being recognised as a city of choice in New Zealand. A special place where people choose to come to live because of what we have to offer. Our high performing health sector is a vital ingredient in that mix of attributes. An important component of our health offerings is Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct. Te Papa Hauora is unique. Nowhere else in Aotearoa is there such strong collaboration between health providers, educators, researchers and commercial players in health. The physical presence of the major players, juxtaposed to our main hospital and various health support services, gives us an opportunity to explore and share exciting new ways of doing things in health. That is critical in our rapidly changing environment. We are just at the beginning of realising the potential of Te Papa Hauora. It is something we can build on, take pride in, and celebrate now and into the future.

As schools and tertiaries wrap up the academic year, students are facing a very different outlook to what they ever could have imagined. In December approximately 7000 school leavers and 10,000 tertiary graduates will complete their studies. So what are we doing to help them? ChristchurchNZ is not just looking at those exiting education but all groups experiencing the impacts of a tough employment market, including those in lower skilled roles, Māori and Pacific populations and those in longterm unemployment. We are mapping support available so we can target areas most in need. This is creating a regional resource to help people find out where and how they can get support. We’re developing a Regional Workforce Plan to identify skills needed now and, in the future, this will inform government investment, policy and education priorities. A recession means more people choose to study, so we are supporting Ngāi Tahu’s development of an iwi skills hub creating pathways for young Māori into tertiary education and skilled jobs. From a business perspective, we’re investing in our city’s innovation ecosystem to support start-ups (expect lots more on this to come soon) and working to attract additional businesses and jobs to our region. Despite the uncertainty, there are many green shoots and opportunities. It may require a different approach, particularly for our rangatahi looking to forge careers in a radically different environment, but we have bold ambitions for our city, a resilient population and we are dead set on supporting those impacted by the recession into sustainable, future-focused jobs.

After years in limbo, the rebuild of one of Christchurch’s most iconic landmarks is yet one more step closer after concept designs for a $154 million reinstatement of the Anglican Cathedral in Cathedral Square were revealed recently.

The new buildings make up a Cathedral Visitors Centre, including a café, landscaped garden and

museum and retail stores, as well as a Cathedral Centre providing gathering spaces, offices and amenities. The renderings show use of glass and timber to complement and contrast with a reinstated stone cathedral. Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited Chair Justin Murray says the vastly improved aesthetics and landscaping of the overall quarter will be a point of pride for the city and a revitalised New Zealand attraction.

he 2020 ceremony held at the Christchurch Town Hall and beamed to miniceremonies in Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown and Whanganui saw 27 projects by Kiwi architects take home awards as part of the annual Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects awards programme.

Winners were whittled down from 46 finalists, which in turn resulted from hundreds of regional winners. All 46 finalists were visited by jury convenor Auckland architect Michael Thomson and fellow judges, Auckland architect Lynda Simmons, Christchurch architect Fiona Short, and University of Auckland architecture professor Anthony Hoete. “The jury was impressed by the standard of work presented to us,” says Michael. “Many of the projects we visited seem particularly relevant in a year in which we’ve all had time to consider what’s important in our own lives, what matters in our communities, and what is special about our country.” On awards night, the esteemed Sir Ian Athfield Award for Housing went to Toto Whare, a Lyttelton state house re-designed by Bull O’Sullivan Architecture and re-constructed by its builder-owner, Alistair Toto of

Riverside drew attention for not only scooping Auckland’s Westfield Newmarket, but for “providing a benchmark for the ‘new Christchurch’.” The Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub submitted by AECOM was awarded excellence for the Holmes Group Tourism and Leisure Property Award, and He Puna Taimoana swimming pool complex in New Brighton submitted by the council received a merit in the same category. For the Greenstone Group Education Property Award, the Beatrice Tinsley Building at the University of Canterbury Christchurch submitted by the University of Canterbury received excellence and Shirley Boys’ & Avonside Girls’ High Schools submitted by ASC Architects took home merit.
