In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture.

Ending on a high note Award-winning Canterbury performer Ali Harper is not letting a year of pandemic postponements stop her. She is determined to end the year on a high note by performing two shows in December.
T
he first show, Christmas Joy will be held on December 5, followed by four performances of The Look of Love on December 17 to 19. Both shows will be performed at The Piano. In previous years, her Christmas concerts have sold out – and she promises 2020 will be better than before as she shares the stage with special guest and much-loved violinist Fiona Pears, Connor Hartley-Hall on guitar and 70 glorious voices from the Cobham Intermediate School Chorale all led by Musical Director and pianist Andy Manning. “I adore this time of year and this year’s Christmas is focusing on love and gratitude,”
she says. “The fragility of life has shown up for all of us this year. By creating a little bit of magic and lightening hearts through the beauty of music is what I think we all need at this time.” Then it’s third time lucky for The Look Of Love - a musical feast for the heart and soul via the full spectrum of Burt Bacharach’s hit songs with muysical arranger Tom Rainey. “Before lockdown Tom and I were able to record and release The Look of Love album and debut the show at Nelson’s Theatre Royal,” says Ali. “Then our Christchurch dates had to be postponed due to Covid-19, not once but

twice - but the upside is the songs resonate even more now with all that everyone has been have been through this year.” The Look Of Love, captures the intimate Manhattan cabaret club vibe to transport you back through the ages, the ‘50s to the ‘80s, celebrating a long line of Bacharach muses, from Marlene Dietrich to Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick to Aretha Franklin and Cilla Black. “Burt’s melodies are utterly gorgeous, timeless and abundantly beautiful whether they are about heartache or hope. I can’t think of a better way to uplift us into Christmas,” she says. www.aliharper.co.nz/upcoming-events

Another fortnight, another opportunity to showcase the talented people and businesses which make up our region. This issue we have some incredible stories from all corners of the region which highlight, celebrate and champion those who give our locale its unique and special character. On page 16, we learn about the inspiring musical journey of Christchurch teen, Analise Twemlow, who doesn’t experience the involuntary tics caused by Tourette’s syndrome when she sings and performs. Her new single, ‘Made in New Zealand’, is raising money for other Kiwis diagnosed with the disorder. Through our cover star, Canterbury fashion icon Bridget Hope, we keep the spirit of Cup Week alive by learning about her race day look, style tips, and her wider approach to the art form of fashion. In our Fashion, Health and Beauty section we learn about the wide range of beauty treatments and health services to indulge in for the social season, or to treat your loved ones with as we enter the gifting period. In Cuisine, we give the lowdown on the region’s new and noteworthy hospitality hot spots, and in Home we share some festive design inspiration. Our monthly Build section is a chance to salute our ever-evolving cityscape – and this issue is no different as we not only hear from our region’s most influential thought leaders, but also get a look inside local winning architectural designs. Afterall, there’s always plenty worth celebrating around here.

The king’s coming to town
Tūranga is set to become alive with the sound of music when the New Zealand Opera’s critically acclaimed Eight Songs for a Mad King comes to town.
T
he rescheduled season is positioned for December 3, 5 and 6 at the Cathedral Square library, where audiences will be treated to the highly regarded performance. Eight Songs for a Mad King explores the complicated relationship between mental health and power. This rendition reimagines Maxwell Davies’ king as a corporate everyman. This concept is reinforced by a double performance that will see audiences, split into two groups of 50, experience the work once inside and up-
close to the performer, and once outside listening through headphones. South Island Baritone Robert Tucker is pushed to the very limits of a singer’s endurance as he sings across five octaves, accompanied by Stroma New Music Ensemble, conducted by Hamish McKeich. It is directed by Thomas de Mallet Burgess and designed by Robin Rawstorne. Tickets are onsale now as part of New Zealand Opera subscription packages or as standalone tickets on sale at www.nzopera.com.

was terrified of becoming a mum and losing myself so tried to live nine months like it was my last,” she laughs about unexpectedly falling pregnant with Matilda – now four – while living in Melbourne. While some find comfort in a large tub of ice cream and others start nesting, Sophie wrote a script! Now, another whole baby later, that script is playing out across cinemas throughout the country. Baby Done stars Kiwi comedian Rose Matafeo opposite Harry Potter star Matthew Lewis and was executive produced by none other than Taika Waititi. Like the little people that inspired the storyline, the film too was a joint effort, with Sophie’s husband Curtis Vowell directing. The stellar line-up of supporting cast includes Madeleine Sami and Emily Barclay. You know the movies where the lead characters fall in love, get married, get pregnant and it’s smooth sailing from there on in? Baby Done is nothing like that. “My hope is that Baby Done surprises

and delights audiences, pushing their limit of what’s acceptable for a pregnant woman to do,” Sophie says. “I was not a well-behaved pregnant woman, and this is not a well-behaved film.” Greenlit when Sophie was pregnant with number two (Silvie, now two-yearsold), Baby Done is a “warm-hearted, edgy and comedic take on an old problem in new times”. “We were excited to have a baby,” husband Curtis says. “But we were also completely and utterly unprepared. The unknown of how we were going to prepare for a child and what impact it would have on our lives began to sink in and we basically freaked out!” Their experience of impending parenthood was “a comedy with a quiet streak of despair,” Curtis laughs. “We promise not all of Baby Done is about us, but we relate to the self-denial that comes with growing up and the feeling that you might lose yourself when you turn into a mum and dad. And like Zoe, Sophie thinks she can do anything pregnant!” We think she probably can, based on the simple fact she has just brought a film to fruition, while juggling not just one, but two little “life changers”. Written over more than two years, the film was then shot over six weeks in April 2019 before heading into post-production for a year – then of course Covid-19 held up the release. There’s not a lot of time for rest yet either, with other projects in the works for Sophie (including a film called Workmates about her time working at Auckland’s Basement Theatre) and Baby Done set to be released in the UK and US in January. While the storyline was written to put her concerns about the possibility of losing part of herself when she became someone’s mum, its production actually gave Sophie a special part of herself to cling onto. “I’m not gonna lie, it was really hard work,” she says of making a film with little people underfoot. “Part of writing the film was to prove to myself that I could still fulfil my dreams as a filmmaker. I felt like I was running out of time to do these things and didn’t want to lose my old self. But those irrational fears come true in the first year; you do lose your sense of self and I was really holding onto this film to hold onto that. “I also wouldn’t recommend making a film with a two-year-old and a threemonth-old,” she laughs. But much like parenting itself, the hard work of creating a world from your imagination is worth every single sleepless night. “It brings me absolute joy,” Sophie says. “You fall in love with the characters, you want to do whatever it takes to look after them and you just don’t want it to end.”
POINTE Christchurch-raised ballet dancer, Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson, has returned from ten years dancing in the US due to Covid-19 and taken up a position with the Royal New Zealand Ballet. He tells Morgan Tait what it’s like to be a performer amidst a pandemic.
“T
he biggest way that Covid-19 has affected me is that it has brought me home. It has always been hard to be away from my family, so once Covid-19 hit I got on a plane to come back very quickly. “The impact of losing shows this year has been really hard. I joined the Royal New Zealand Ballet for the rescheduled season of Venus Rising. The show was ready to open. It was gut-wrenching to have it cancelled and slip from our grasp like that. Some of the dancers had been working

on it for nine months. “A ballet can quickly become a part of you. When you learn a ballet you spend 40 hours a week working on it, and often take it home with you to study at night, you condition your body to be ready for the most difficult steps — it becomes your world. “There’s also a really big physical and emotional release you get when you finally open a show, it’s like the dance has been bottled up inside you for months and then you finally share it with an audience and
the experience is no longer just yours, it’s electric. It is funny because I usually forget the steps of many ballets soon after we finish performing them, but with Venus Rising, I still feel like I could do that program right now if I was asked to perform it tonight. It’s unfinished business. “It’s my fourth time performing the iconic ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, and each time I’ve gotten to tackle different roles, so it is fun to keep coming back to it from different angles.”

I love performing, it’s my favourite thing ever and I actually feel proud of myself, as I sing, so it’s a good feeling. When I play music and when I sing, I don’t really tic at all so it’s just that kind of safe space and when I play, I just feel relaxed.

nalise’s single, Made in New Zealand, was made in lockdown. With the help of her mentor, high profile New Zealand musician and producer, Tiki Taane, the 15-year-old used the time and space to write and record the song about Aotearoa’s efforts to stamp out Covid-19. “I actually really enjoyed lockdown, I went for walks and I was really productive. I made lots of music,” she says. Released last month, the pandemic prompted piece – which even features a cameo of Dr Ashley Bloomfield in its video – will donate all royalties to the Tourette’s Association of New Zealand (TANZ). The Christchurch-based organisation was founded by Analise’s mother, Robyn, to support those with the complex condition and their families, as well as educating the wider community. “I was really proud of New Zealand,” says Analise. “We’ve overcome

earthquakes, fires and Covid-19, and look at us now, we’re doing great.” Although lockdown allowed Analise to spend lots of time listening to and making music, the uncertain period triggered the involuntary movements and noises caused by the disorder. Diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome at nine, Analise says she has a love-hate relationship with it. “It’s not like anything that people see on TV or social media, there is so much more to Tourette’s than what people say. It’s not just swearing at all. It’s like you don’t have control over your body.” Analise is passionate about helping people with Tourette’s and educating others so children do not grow up with the same misconceptions she experienced – and she wants to use her music to help do so. “If I work with music, I also want to work with mental health and Tourette’s,” says the Hagley School of Music student who picked up a guitar for the first time at the age of seven. “I love performing, it’s my favourite thing ever and I actually feel proud of myself, as I sing, so it’s a good feeling. “When I play music and when I sing, I don’t really tic at all so it’s just that kind of safe space and when I play, I just feel relaxed.” Amid a pandemic, charitable donations are harder to come by, so Analise’s single will raise money for TANZ’s annual Camp Twitch. And, if possible, allow for two camps to happen in 2021. It was attending the camp where Analise met four of her best friends, who now form the band, The Lunatics. Robyn says she started TANZ after Analise’s diagnosis revealed a lack of information about the disorder here. Camp Twitch is a special priority. “It’s a safe place for them and no one’s judging them. It’s a place where they are ‘normal’ for a whole week, and that’s just what they need, they just need that support.” Listen to Made in New Zealand at www.itsanalise.com, or make a donation to TANZ at www.tourettes.org.nz.

You not only looked phenomenal at Cup Day, but you were a judge for the fashion competition at the New Zealand Cup Meeting on Saturday. In your opinion, what makes a winning race day outfit? One word – effort. It’s about that perfect recipe of dress or separates, hats and accessories. I always admire the time, energy and often, money, people put into their race day fashion to achieve a polished look. What trends or new looks did you see coming through this year, and why did those stand out for you? Every year hats are getting bolder and bigger: Fascinators are now taking a back seat and almost look wimpy compared to the large hats and highly decorated headbands. I thought Covid-19 may see a quietening of race day fashion, but I think the reverse happened everyone went all out!
Canterbury’s Bridget Hope is behind beloved boutique Magpie Style, and her Cup Day look inspired our cover. She chats with Metropol about all things style.

When you’re not turning heads at the track, you’re running a fashion empire. Tell us about your business and your exciting new Rangiora store. We run three businesses from our new location in High Street, Rangiora; Magpie Style fashion boutique, 27/05/20 11:47 PM magpiestyle.co.nz and paularyan.
com. I am so happy to be in Rangiora, it has been wonderful working from a smaller town, and the people are so welcoming. How would you describe your personal style? My personal style is all about prints, I often complain that my own wardrobe has so much action and not enough quiet! I am a total magpie in that I love anything sparkly, bright and printed. We’re at the start line of summer. What are some of the seasonal styles you’re observing, or predicting, we will see for summer 2020/2021? I continue to be surprised as to how animal print continues its reign every year and this summer is no different, but with cheetah and right through into accessories and scarves as well. I am also seeing a lot of white coming through. A top to toe white look can be so fresh for the festive season. As we mature, our tastes and personal preferences evolve, too, but there have long been conflicting stereotypes around women dressing “too young” or “too frumpy”. What is your advice for women to help them embrace new stages of life, without losing their style? The only thing we really need to consider as we age is very short hemlines and cleavage. Other than that, I think women don’t need to be too worried about dressing their age. I have sold some of our most flamboyant looks to women over 70. It’s about having a level of confidence to own it and not apologise. Confidence when it comes to fashion is half the battle. If you have the confidence, I say own it! What is your go-to style tip for anyone, whether they are already a fashionista or someone looking to evolve their wardrobe? Buy the dress, but own the look!

You looked incredible! Describe your raceday outfit – from hat to toe and what inspired the look? Thank you! Cup Week is such a wonderful opportunity to dress up, and this year was no exception! Dame Trelise Cooper made me my dress, and we were so happy with the results its been added to the Trelise Cooper holiday collection in two colours, which we will be selling in-store and online. My hat was designed by Sydney milliner, Neil Grigg, to match the dress.

Hallelujah! For 30 years Christchurch City Choir (CCC) has enchanted audiences with its annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, and following a year of disruption, this exultant masterpiece returns to the stage – with the presence of some returned overseas talent. NZ based soprano, Anna Pierard, and mezzo-soprano, Catrin Johnsson, will perform alongside overseas based tenor, Oliver Sewell, and bass-baritone, Paul Whelan, who have both returned home due to Covid-19 restrictions. These four internationally renowned soloists will sing
with the 100-voice choir (including members of the Christchurch Youth Choir), and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), under the baton of Dr John Linker. The history of CCC is 125 years strong, culminating in the 1990 merger of the Christchurch Harmonic Society and the Royal
Christchurch Music Society. Paul Whelan’s CCC association goes way back. His mother toured Europe with the Christchurch Harmonic Society when Paul was a baby. “CCC has been going for a long time; it’s provided a strong sense of community and friendships. Choirs are so good for health – to make harmony with other people is a fantastic thing. For audiences, a choir going full blast, especially something like Messiah, it’s a deeply visceral experience.” Some of the biggest names in New Zealand music have performed with CCC, including Dame Malvina Major, the Choir’s Patron, Simon O’Neill and CCC’s first conductor, Brian Law. Board member Jo Dodgshun joined the choir in 1972. She
remembers when Brian Law took over the choir 30 years ago. “One of the attractions in taking on the role was his being able to conduct at the Town Hall; Brian’s first concert there was Messiah.” Jo says planning the performance programme through 2021 and beyond is nearing completion and there’s much to look forward to. “What I love about CCC is that it gets to tackle big symphonic works with the full choir and orchestra. We do incredible concerts, like the Proms with the CSO…and to be singing Messiah in our beautiful Town Hall again… that’s absolutely wonderful!” Handel’s Messiah, 7.30pm, Saturday December 12 at the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium, Christchurch Town Hall. www.citychoir.co.nz

Holistic, healthy Hanmer WORDS TRACEY EDWARDES
Simply escaping from the craziness of the city is holistically beneficial for us, so Hanmer must be a wellness bundle with bells on! Even driving through serene Waipara valley, on route to the heavenly haven, renews and relaxes all the senses.
W
e can’t take a pilgrimage to famed spa sanctuaries of the world just now, but Hanmer offers very comparable health and happiness benefits to lure us – world class in fact. It’s the alpine air, therapeutic hot springs, peace and a woodland abundance of exotic trees such as Norwegian Spruce and black pine. Simply breathing in that Christmaslike scent is beneficial. Add a spa treatment or therapeutic massage to unwind the stress clock, then nourish with healthy local cuisine. Back to Roman times people bathed in mineralrich thermal waters for wellness. Hanmer Springs
Thermal Pools and Spa is born from rainwater seeped deep into the mountain rock, and drawn up to create rich therapeutic mineral pools. A soak will soothe aching bones and many an ailment. The slightly higher altitude of 358m encourages beneficial deep breathing of fresh alpine air for those who stroll or cycle through this North Canterbury hot spot. It has also been smoking and vaping-free since 2018. Whether you’re heading for an overnight (or multiple) or a day trip – a soujourn to Hanmer could be the holistic, healthy escape you need to see out the year, or in the new one.

Feline friends indeed Visiting a vet can be stressful for our feline friends, which can put owners off taking them. One local clinic, Ourvets, has received global recognition for its attention to cat care and wellbeing to ensure a stress-free visit, every time.
O
urvets has achieved accreditation as a Cat Friendly Clinic to recognise its high standard of care which promotes wellbeing for all cats visiting or being hospitalised in its veterinary clinic. The global programme is developed by the International Society of Feline Medicine, the veterinary division of leading feline charity International Cat Care. Ourvets Riccarton Team Leader Catherine Daniel says the accreditation reinforces the team’s dedication to caring for
their cat clientele – and ensuring each visit is as stress-free as possible. “The criteria includes having separate dog and cat waiting areas, feline-friendly hospitalisation cages, and veterinary equipment specifically for treating cats,” she says. “It also recognises our approach to handling cats sensitively and respectfully, as well as staying up to date with the latest knowledge of feline medicine.” Under the programme, a clinic must prove rigorous adherence
to a set of criteria including provision of facilities and demonstration of staff activities and attitudes aimed at reducing stress in cats, both as in-patients and out-patients. “We always want to make sure a trip to our clinic is as stress-free an experience as possible for our cat patients and their owners. By undertaking Cat Friendly Clinic accreditation, we’ve committed to delivering high standards of cat care, with compassion and expertise.” Ourvets has clinics in St
Albans, Halswell, Parklands and Riccarton, which cater for all animals – not just cats. Ourvets has one of the South Island’s only veterinary CT scanners, as well as digital radiography, ultrasonography, in-house diagnostics and a team of highly experienced and dedicated vets and veterinary nurses across animal medicine, orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries and oncology. Plus two luxurious catteries – a must-book for the pending festive season. www.ourvets.co.nz

Makeover your makeup WORDS JESS MURRAY
So, you’ve spring cleaned your home, re-organised your wardrobe and sorted your summer skincare – but it might also be time to declutter your makeup bag. We look at what to keep, what to chuck (and when), and what to add.
I
f you’re a lover of makeup, chances are that you have more than one type of mascara, lipstick and any other beauty product in your makeup draw. And if so, there is an even higher chance your makeup mountain is looking a bit cluttered. Which is all very well (a
lady’s got to have options), but besides the obvious hygiene reasons – makeup’s expiration date can impact its performance. And no one has time for that. Not to mention the catharsis of a good, oldfashioned clean out. Here are our tips for keeping your cosmetics under control.
1.
WHEN TO SAY GOODBYE
2.
WHAT TO TOSS
Look for the use-by symbol. This resembles a wee opened jar icon and should have a time like either 3M, 6M, 12M, 24M or 36M inside. Yes, the M means months!
Have a product that looked cool in the packet but didn’t work that well for you? Throw it away or donate it, there is no point hanging on to something you are not going to use.
3.
HOW TO DO IT
4.
WHO TO KEEP
5.
WHERE TO TAKE IT
Investing in a YouTube-worthy makeup storage system doesn’t absolve you: too much (or unnecessary) stuff, is too much stuff. Instead, find your product faithfuls, and stick with ‘em.
When collating your arsenal of makeup bag heroes consider; concealer, foundation, a smudge-proof mascara, neutral lipstick and a basic blush. Then, build in a primer, setting spray, highlighter and one heroic palette.
Don’t send your pre-loved products straight to landfill. TerraCycle offers a makeup and skincare packaging recycling scheme, as do some brands. Unopened, nonexpired goods can also be donated to Women’s Refuge or Dress for Success.
Handy tip: De-cluttering is good but so is regularly cleaning the products you hold onto. Experts say a couple of times a month, whilst others say every seven to 10 days. It just depends how frequently you use them.

Owner Prue Macdonald says the new Diode Laser is making waves with clients seeking hair removal. The Diode Laser – which is only available in a few salons across the country - works on more hair colours and skin types than other lasers used for traditional IPL and has a cooling tip for increased comfort. She says dermal planing – which removes final facial hair to give a smoother appearance – is also very
popular and is currently being offered half price with every facial booked. “We also have beautiful spa packages which make the perfect gift for Christmas – even if that gift is to yourself,” says Prue. “Not to mention our no-appointment necessary nail bar; a quick mani or pedi (or both) is a delicious pick me up to brighten your mood, and your look!” Clients at the spa will be treated with Image products, a range of high-potency results-driven skincare that comes from the United States, to rejuvenate skin. A summer stunner As more and more clothing manufacturers worldwide are stepping up to planet responsibility, it’s heartening to see producers of swimwear are contributing significantly to issues around environment.
D
eborah Lewthwaite, owner of bra specialist boutique The Fitting Room, says many of the swimwear brands in-store are developing a range of swimsuits of recycled origin. “We see swimsuits that have been made from fishnets, while others, such as all of the Zoggs range, are made from recycled plastic,” she says. Another big and necessary advancement is swimwear made of fabric with higher resistance to chlorine; no longer need we face the depressing sight of a much loved but also much perished swimsuit.
The Fitting Room specialises in fuller cup bras (sizes C to K), and swimwear, such as Jantzen, Sunseeker, Seafolly and Freya, also come in fuller cups. For a welcoming, private, one-onone consultation, Deborah recommends booking an appointment online. With two locations, Fendalton and Sydenham (the latter has great behindstore parking), make this a stunner summer in something fabulous from The Fitting Room…and while you’re there, why not gift the girlfriends a Christmas voucher? reating fantastic, stylish results, while keeping prices affordable, is always the goal at local salon, Haircuts for Haircuts, which has been producing haircuts for everyone from pre-schoolers to pensioners – and all ages in between – for more than 30 years. Owner and operator Michelle Butterfield says the friendly and experienced staff, who are all fully qualified hair stylists, have been receiving excellent results with the Nak range of vegan and cruelty-free styling and finished products. Sulphate and paraben-free Nak products include shampoo, conditioner, styling products and hair and scalp treatments. Which not only help ensure Haircuts for Haircuts excellent in-salon results, but make great Christmas gifts, too. low Hot Yoga’s beginnings took root in February 2011, in response to a city badly in need of a sense of community – a place where people could gather and regain a sense of calm, balance and stability in their lives through yoga. The team learnt a lot from that time, so that when the Covid-19-induced lockdown happened, free Zoom classes
were quickly put in place to ensure the community continued to be nurtured during yet another stressful period. Those Zoom classes were gratefully received. Flow Hot Yoga closes December 23

Healthy hacks WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
We’re quickly heading into the social – and too often, stressful – season. So, what are some simple seasonal habits we can adopt to keep fighting fit for the festivities?
There’s a clever way to eat well that means you can have your cake and eat it too – not that we want you thinking of cake! But if you are, why not think of a healthy wholefood one? That’s right, you can make nutrient-dense sweet foods using vegetables! Think rich beetroot mud cake or kumara brownies. It’s a thing! So why not let you fingers do the walking and find some sweet swaps of your own?
health
A SWEET SWAP
HEARTY HABITS The key to heart health is to keep moving and that doesn’t just mean getting an extra kickboxing class in after work. From building a fence to mowing the lawn, all physical movement plays a role in keeping your heart healthy. So why not schedule some time in the garden or get your DIY hat on and paint the kitchen? Or maybe it’s just a matter of parking a couple of blocks away from the office in the mornings.
THE POWER OF PREP Packing your lunch – it seems so simple and yet this small change in your daily routine can help control your mood, your calories and your spending! When you’ve got a healthy lunch to hand, you’re much less likely to find your hand in the company snack box when low sugars hit. Stay energised and productive throughout the day with nutritious options such as nuts, dried fruit, roasted chickpeas and bliss balls.
VEGE UP, NOT OUT ULTIMATE ELIXIR It’s time to take the work out of working out. Soak up the sun – and a healthy dose of vitamin D – on the tennis court, in the pool or on a hike around Hagley. Known as the happy hormone, vitamin D has been shown to regulate mood and ward off depression, but it also helps support strong bones, muscles and overall health. Combined with fresh air and exercise and you’ve got the ultimate elixir.
It’s time to vege up, not out, by increasing your vege intake. Aim to have fruits and vegetables make up half of each meal. Why not make half of breakfast fruit and half of lunch and dinner veges? Better yet, throw some green smoothies in the mix and you can have the best of both worlds! For simple summer dinners, combine a marinade with fresh grilled veggies and your favourite low-fat protein for a great-tasting, healthy weeknight meal.

Something new… WORDS TRACEY EDWARDES
As the world transforms, wedding trends in 2021 are taking on a dramatic new life, seizing every precious opportunity to tie the knot and live it up in the moment with loved ones. WEDDING DRESS – OR PANTS?
A SMALLER RECEPTION
FULL ON FLOWERS
From flowing frocks to modern and edgy pant suits, no one look is dominant for the new year. UK’s Hitched has us drooling over dramatic necklines and backs, embellished sleeves, big bows, sequins, and modern lace. Flattering, fun jumpsuits and pantsuits in slender silhouettes, and mini-dresses or suits add statement. Equally, demure, simple flowy gowns are romantically 2021.
Small and special has superseded large and lavish due to tightening budgets, travel restrictions and precautionary measures for any alert-level surprises. This only means more quality time with guests, less stress, easier arrangements, and adventurous, quirky location choices perfectly suited to a more tight-knit party.
We’re not skimping on the flora. Trails of flowers and greenery from the ceilings, floating whimsically across tables to the floor, through to the still-popular livingwall trend. Conversely, the bouquet is shrinking in size, but easier to hold for the photos, showing off the bride’s silhouette instead. Flowers in her hair is 2021’s natural beauty.
RINGS WITH AN EDGE
CAPTURING THE MEMORY
CAKES AND CUISINE
Pastel pinks and blues sparkling with iridescent romance are representing true love for the new decade, cites Harper’s Bazaar. However, equally it’s the go for gothic with dramatic depth and attitude. The solitaires, three stones, and halos are back - but as a different dazzler with changedup settings. Also, chunky solid settings are boldly carrying precious rocks.
Wedding videos that capture the whole day and thereafter – as well as live streaming. Relaxed photography and drone shots capture those magical impromptu moments and nuances before, during and after. A bit of creativity and imagination, and it’s just like being present for far away whanau and friends.
Mini mouthfuls from a macaron tower, in wedding-theme hues, and other individual, portion-sized, while-you-mingle desserts are it. For colourful cakes, faves like chocolate are beating traditional fruit cake. Adorn with floral, whether real or sugar. Classic kiwi comfort foods such as cheese boards and decadent local fare is the new flexible feast.

When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, it’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.
“J
ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based in hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!”

in the freezer, where they will keep for up to four months. When you are wanting to eat a slice, allow about 10 to 15 minutes for it to thaw.
To make the base, place the coconut, almonds and buckwheat into a blender or food processor, and blend until you have a rough flour.
Pour the filling over the base and bang the tin on the bench top a couple of times to get rid of any air bubbles and get a smooth finish.
Add the remaining ingredients, and blend until you have a cookie-dough consistency. Line a tart tin with beeswax wraps or cling film, and press the base into the tin, using the back of a spoon.
Spoon the passionfruit pulp over the filling, and with the handle of a spoon or a wooden skewer gently make a ripple effect.
Press the mixture up the sides to create a crust. Set aside. To make the filling, place all of the ingredients, except for the passionfruit pulp, into the blender or food processor, and blend until smooth.
Place the slice in the freezer for two hours, to set. Once the slice is set, remove it from the freezer, and top it with coconut yoghurt, passionfruit, and a drizzle of honey. Cut it into slices and enjoy. Store the slices in an airtight container

BETTER FOR YOU
Not only does our produce taste better when in season, but the fresher the fare – the higher its nutritional value. Studies show fruits and vegetables stored, for example while being transported long distances, can lose nutritional value.
WALLET FRIENDLY
Prices tend to be lower with inseason produce because there is more of it and it doesn’t need to travel far to arrive still fresh for your plate. And as we head into summer, that means no more extortionate courgettes.

A revitalised abode A bespoke kitchen and bathroom Fendalton makeover cleverly merges two worlds – sleek design and functional family life.
T
he 20-year-old architecturally-designed home has had a lifechanging renovation of meticulous detail by DJ Hewitt Builders. This was in close collaboration with local Spatial Design firm Detail by Davina Sutton, who says the tired bathrooms and a closed-in kitchen needed an inviting revamp, with a nod to the home’s original features. A kitchen of streamlined contrast is now more open to appear larger and visually
flows to the living room. The integrated fridge and breakfast bar are concealed behind bespoke softly textured cupboards. The extra-wide island creates room for both the induction hob and sink. The striking Caesar Stone benchtop was framed to stand out, by a matte dark-stained veneered surround. The result, a feeling of freshness and space, with plenty of hideaway storage features. Davinia says people are really reflecting on how they use their kitchens and re-designing the
busy family hub to be so much easier to work in and keep tidy. Clean lines, without appearing cold, was the kitchen and the bathroom brief, utilising contrasting neutral palettes. The bathroom, ensuite and powder room received a refined and elegant makeover with excellent use of space. Whites against the charcoalgrey Italian tiles added moody layers of depth to sharp lines. The European moulded solidsurface basins, vanities and undermounted bath were custom-made for a quick easy
clean. These bespoke features befitted a high standard of craftmanship. “Daryl and his subcontractors were fantastic,” Davinia says. “They take on a vision with excellence of workmanship and problem solving, while working as a team to respect and appreciate the design.” She highlights a perfect outcome is where the designer and the builders collaborate well together for the client, and a common outcome. “I couldn’t ask for better, and the results show this.” www.djhewitt.co.nz

Rug up for summer It’s not very often you’re told to rug up for the warmest season. But, as soft furnishings continue to blur the lines between the indoors and out, rugs are just one of a number of typically interior provisions making the trip outdoors.

The Wisd m of
Happiness
After a long year, a lot of change and an extraordinary property market, it’s time for me to take a breath.
Devote time to family and friends – I’ve found family and friends to be absolute saviours and having a son who can’t return to his occupation in the Northern Hemisphere is a cause for celebration for myself and John!
November, the month where I normally start to wind-up, plan and prepare, has found me weary and eager for the end of the year to arrive.
Express gratitude – yup, be grateful. It’s hard, but the entitlement I’ve observed at times in 2020 is not nice. It’s time to show some grace – and it’s worth it.
Planning for summer – planning full-stop – has always been an integral part of my life. Lists, always lists, long ones that would follow me around … and me ceaselessly working through them, adding large double ticks to indicate tasks that had been completed. I know I’m not alone in this listmaking habit and the weariness that comes as a result is equally noticeable in friends and colleagues.
Make physical activity a habit – nothing to add here, we all know it’s a good idea.
This year has seen so many changes. In fact, 2020 has been the most unusual of years and all of us will have learnt from it. I’ve decided, out of wisdom and a certain fatigue, that this summer I’d rather rest than rush. I’d also like to focus on a number of insights and strategies that I learnt recently whilst participating in a wellness seminar facilitated and attended by some magical people. The topics of self-awareness, compassion and connection all came under review. As did the observation that happiness springs from several simple elements (so simple that we tend to overlook them) that contribute to a good life. Now I’m not only practicing them; I’m sharing them with anyone who cares to choose more happiness.
Instead, many of us spend more time on social media than on exercise and more time looking at our cellphones than at the faces of the people we’re with.
So here are a couple according to Lyubomirsky (2007) whose studies have identified that the happiest people usually practice the following:
Lynette McFadden
Finally, happy people are often the first to offer others a helping hand despite having their own share of issues. How simple are these habits? So simple, in fact, that we often forget to practice them ourselves.
So prioritise and practice these habits, as will I whilst I balance and move through the 100 plus auctions our company still has ahead of us before the end of the year in a market that continues to roar. 2020 has delivered some enormous personal challenges as well as some professional highs, but rather than shout ‘next’, I’m choosing to whisper ‘thanks’.

Repetition & rhythm While there will always be artistic styles that experience waxing and waning popularity, the artwork you choose for your space should feel very personal. Whether you opt for an investment piece or simply want to display something that holds sentimental value, the key is picking something that really speaks to you – or something you at least enjoy looking at.
O
nce you’ve found a piece that you really love, why not use it to inspire a colour palette for the room in which you’ll be hanging it? This modern garden room or conservatory features an original artwork by Hannah Jensen, one of many artists who paints her works using Resene products. If you are unsure what colours are used in the artwork you own, you can always upload a photo or scan of your piece to the Resene Colour Palette Generator, www.resene.com/ palettegenerator. The generator creates a Resene colour palette based on the most common colours in the image and advises
a proportion for colour use. From there, you can download swatches to start fleshing out your design scheme. One clever idea is to use the shape of your artwork to create similar shapes on your walls. In this space, an arch has been painted in Resene Alabaster over a background in Resene Flotsam. Then, repeat the same shape throughout the room to create a sense of continuity. Here, the rice paper lantern, the table, the vases and the wheels of the cart carry the theme throughout the space. In the same way round shapes have been repeated, so have colours. The wall at the right in Resene Polo Blue and the vase on the table in Resene Time Out bring the main colour of the artwork further into the space. To bridge the gap between the lightest colour in the room (Resene Alabaster), the darkest colour (Resene Bunting) and the grey of Resene Flotsam, Resene Link Water was used on the chairs, small vases and plant pots to link together the entire colour palette. And, the decision to stick to a tonal scheme gives the artwork more visual space to shine.

FLOWER GARDEN
WORDS CHERYL COLLEY
Summer is so close you can taste it. The festive season is almost upon us with holidays and of course Christmas. As holiday mode takes hold, enjoy relaxing evenings in the garden with a hose in one hand and a drink in the other!
KITCHEN GARDEN 1.
This is a time of rapid growth so ensure you pay attention to watering, weeding, feeding and spraying.
2.
You can still sow seeds such as beans, beetroot, parsnip, radish, lettuce, spinach, and sweetcorn directly into the soil. Sow seeds every two weeks to ensure you have a continuous harvest.
3. 4. 5. 6.
Plant seedlings of lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, tomato, pumpkin, courgette, capsicum, and cucumber.
1.
Plant seedlings such as chrysanthemum, dianthus, portulaca and salvia.
2.
Roses and perennials can still be planted. Just ensure the new plantings are well watered. Remove dead flowers from roses to encourage new blooms.
3.
Lift spring flowering bulbs once the leaves have died down completely and store in a cool dry place.
4.
A layer of mulch around the base of garden shrubs will conserve moisture and protect from the sun.
CONTAINER GARDENING 1. 2.
Protect plants from caterpillars with Derris Dust or an organic caterpillar control. Be aware of slugs and snails in both the kitchen and flower gardens and keep an eye on any nasty insects on plants as they will multiply in warm weather. Be vigilant in removing the laterals off your tomatoes once a week or you will end up with out of control plants. Ensure the plants are firmly staked and water regularly.
gardening
Growing a summer garden
Fill pots with flowering annuals such as petunias, marigolds, or impatiens for a bright Christmas and summer display. Keep up watering in warm weather.
LAWNS 1.
Don’t forget the lawn. Raise the lawn mower up a level for the summer season. If cut too short lawns will dry out more quickly.
2.
Water the lawn early in the morning so it can absorb the water during the day.
3.
Apply fast acting lawn food to keep lawns fresh and green.

Through our Canterbury Business Champions campaign, we have heard some amazing stories of innovation, nimbleness, determination, collaboration and kindness, and together celebrated what it is that makes our business community so unique. While in a “normal” year we would showcase our local champions at our Westpac Champion Business Awards, given the uncertainty of running events during Covid-19, this year we evolved the celebration and took it online to collectively champion all businesses – as there has never been a better time to share positive stories about our business community than right now. This provided a great platform to be able to share some of the region’s best kept secrets. Such as 27Seconds, a local wine producer that gives away 100 percent of the organisation’s profits to help survivors of slavery. Or out-of-school care provider MASH Kids that during lockdown adapted by creating MASH Nannies and Babysitters. And motorcycle touring company South Pacific Motorcycle Tours which used to cater solely to international tourists, but now offers motorcycle servicing and repairs, rentals, and a maintenance workshop, as well as organising events and tours. These stories demonstrate the innovation and drive that Waitaha Canterbury has become known for. Congratulations to the winners of the $18,000 of spot prizes, including three advertising vouchers worth $5000 each from Mediaworks and The Press, and three $1000 Air New Zealand Travel Vouchers. Finally, a big thank-you to everyone who shared a story – you can view the collection of stories at canterburybusinesschampions.com.
November is always a big month for us with the Bloom Festival embracing a range of activities, including NZ Cup and Show Week. We certainly missed the A&P Show, which had to be cancelled earlier in the year, but the fact that we are able to celebrate all the other festivities and look forward to Christmas and the New Year with confidence, means we have got something right. And that’s the approach we took as a team of five million. We are bearing the fruits of our collective efforts where others in the world are returning to lockdown conditions. For the first time since March, we’ve been able to celebrate our new citizens in a more memorable way than a certificate simply arriving in the mail. The resounding applause spoke volumes of how much we mean to each other, and what we can achieve when we work together for the greater good. So, as we begin moving into the Christmas season and start looking forward to end-of-year parties and festivities with work colleagues, friends and families I urge you all to keep up the good work that has got us to our fortunate position. Keep up the hand washing and keep tracking where you go with the Covid-19 tracer app. If you feel unwell, stay at home, and if you have symptoms, get tested. If we, as the team of five million, do all those things, then we can continue to come together and celebrate the occasions and the events that mean so much to us.

For the last few weeks, the Ministry of Awesome team has been working hard alongside New World to launch this year’s FoodStarter competition. We’re so excited about getting this underway because it is the ultimate opportunity for Kiwi food and beverage entrepreneurs to launch right into national success. And - if ever there was a year to give our locals a boost - 2020 is that year! The competition is a search for New Zealand’s food and beverage product superstars. There are two categories; existing New World small suppliers and brand new startups who have never had their product on New World’s shelves. There’s also a supersized prize package that includes the priceless opportunity for the winners to range their products in all New Worlds throughout New Zealand, get incredible business support, product development, and a whole new brand look. Supporting the scale up to a national competition, Foodstarter 2021 is welcoming two new partners, Foodstuffs North Island and Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED). These newbies add their weight to founders Foodstuffs South Island and Ministry of Awesome, and existing partners Food Innovation Network, economic development agency ChristchurchNZ and brand design agency Strategy Creative. Last year’s Foodstarter winner Ananda Simply Wholefoods are about to feel the full effect of winning the competition with their Italian Style Vegan Sausage debuting on all New World South Island shelves just in time for BBQ season. Love your locals all the way team New Zealand and spread the FoodStarter word to anyone you think could benefit.

On St Asaph Street, outside the Metro Sports Facility site, we now have work underway to install New Zealand’s first Wastewater Heat Recovery System. Showers, sinks, dishwashers, washing machines and even toilets all result in hot water going down the drain. This lifts the temperature of the major wastewater pipe running down St Asaph Street to a useful 17°C. With this system we will be able to capture and recycle this otherwise wasted energy to help heat the pools and building. Part of the St Asaph Street wastewater pipe flow will be redirected into a building in the Metro Sports Facility’s car park. The sewage will be “screened” to filter unwanted material and enable the flow to pass through a heat exchanger. By using an exchanger, fresh warm water can be supplied to the Facility’s heat pumps while ensuring there is no contact between the sewage and the pools. This waste heat recovery project will provide significant benefits to the Christchurch community by re-using waste heat energy that has already been paid for to produce approximately 3500kW of energy per annum for heating at the Metro Sports Facility, which is the equivalent of powering up to 2000 homes per day. This will result in a saving of around $100,000 a year compared to groundwater sourced heating and help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Too often in Christchurch and Canterbury we underestimate our performance and influence, as a city and a region. We also have a tendency to understate our achievements. I think this comes from the natural conservatism of our people. When you get outside Christchurch and look back in, it’s easy to gain an appreciation of all the good things we have going for us. Being conservative is not a bad thing, but there are times when a community needs to stand up and openly celebrate its place in the world. That time is now for greater Christchurch. We are poised on the edge of being recognised as a city of choice in New Zealand. A special place where people choose to come to live because of what we have to offer. Our high performing health sector is a vital ingredient in that mix of attributes. An important component of our health offerings is Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct. Te Papa Hauora is unique. Nowhere else in Aotearoa is there such strong collaboration between health providers, educators, researchers and commercial players in health. The physical presence of the major players, juxtaposed to our main hospital and various health support services, gives us an opportunity to explore and share exciting new ways of doing things in health. That is critical in our rapidly changing environment. We are just at the beginning of realising the potential of Te Papa Hauora. It is something we can build on, take pride in, and celebrate now and into the future.
As schools and tertiaries wrap up the academic year, students are facing a very different outlook to what they ever could have imagined. In December approximately 7000 school leavers and 10,000 tertiary graduates will complete their studies. So what are we doing to help them? ChristchurchNZ is not just looking at those exiting education but all groups experiencing the impacts of a tough employment market, including those in lower skilled roles, Māori and Pacific populations and those in longterm unemployment. We are mapping support available so we can target areas most in need. This is creating a regional resource to help people find out where and how they can get support. We’re developing a Regional Workforce Plan to identify skills needed now and, in the future, this will inform government investment, policy and education priorities. A recession means more people choose to study, so we are supporting Ngāi Tahu’s development of an iwi skills hub creating pathways for young Māori into tertiary education and skilled jobs. From a business perspective, we’re investing in our city’s innovation ecosystem to support start-ups (expect lots more on this to come soon) and working to attract additional businesses and jobs to our region. Despite the uncertainty, there are many green shoots and opportunities. It may require a different approach, particularly for our rangatahi looking to forge careers in a radically different environment, but we have bold ambitions for our city, a resilient population and we are dead set on supporting those impacted by the recession into sustainable, future-focused jobs.

WORDS MORGAN TAIT
After years in limbo, the rebuild of one of Christchurch’s most iconic landmarks is yet one more step closer after concept designs for a $154 million reinstatement of the Anglican Cathedral in Cathedral Square were revealed recently.
R
eleased by Warren and Mahoney in association with international firm Snøhetta and heritage specialists Salmond Reed, the designs acknowledge the Anglican Cathedral’s rich history supported by modern buildings which will play a wider role in the city – and square’s – offerings. The new buildings make up a Cathedral Visitors Centre, including a café, landscaped garden and
museum and retail stores, as well as a Cathedral Centre providing gathering spaces, offices and amenities. The renderings show use of glass and timber to complement and contrast with a reinstated stone cathedral. Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited Chair Justin Murray says the vastly improved aesthetics and landscaping of the overall quarter will be a point of pride for the city and a revitalised New Zealand attraction.

“It is a wonderful piece of design work, by Warren and Mahoney and Snøhetta, that is distinctly Kiwi. The new modern buildings serve as a link to the contemporary buildings around the outside of the square and are complementary to the Cathedral. “This great looking plan offers a vibrant, attractive, functioning Cathedral Quarter that we are convinced will stimulate social, economic and tourism activity in Cathedral Square and the wider central city.”

Green Builders are a dedicated team of skilled craftsmen who believe exceptional projects are accomplished through the teamwork of exceptional people. “I never view anything as a problem, just a challenge that I can find a solution to,” says Reuben Green, Director of Green Builders. Architectural and hill builds are a specialty for Green Builders, but Reuben is equally enthusiastic about renovations. “Renovations are great. They can vary from a small extension to a second storey, but the fun of the challenge is to make the end result look as if we were never there, as if the new part is intrinsic to the original structure,” he says. “We have real expertise in adapting modern materials to look original. and the unique, making new windows to match the original, creating unique stair treads, it really is our thing,” says Reuben. “Homes built anywhere from the mid-50s to the mid80s, often in weatherboard are a personal favourite, but any renovation is an enjoyable project, figuring out the best methods and combining that with the ideal modern materials.” Reuben ensures every element of the build is geared towards high quality: “Excellent subtrades are essential, otherwise the whole system falls over. I get on very well with all my subcontractors, everyone we use is really part of one big team.”

he 2020 ceremony held at the Christchurch Town Hall and beamed to miniceremonies in Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown and Whanganui saw 27 projects by Kiwi architects take home awards as part of the annual Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects awards programme.
Winners were whittled down from 46 finalists, which in turn resulted from hundreds of regional winners. All 46 finalists were visited by jury convenor Auckland architect Michael Thomson and fellow judges, Auckland architect Lynda Simmons, Christchurch architect Fiona Short, and University of Auckland architecture professor Anthony Hoete. “The jury was impressed by the standard of work presented to us,” says Michael. “Many of the projects we visited seem particularly relevant in a year in which we’ve all had time to consider what’s important in our own lives, what matters in our communities, and what is special about our country.” On awards night, the esteemed Sir Ian Athfield Award for Housing went to Toto Whare, a Lyttelton state house re-designed by Bull O’Sullivan Architecture and re-constructed by its builder-owner, Alistair Toto of

The Town Hall recognised the work of Hawkins, Christchurch City Council, Octa Associates Limited, Warren and Mahoney, Holmes Consulting, Cosgroves, Tonkin and Taylor and Emily Fryer Conservation, while Riverside Market’s entry was
submitted by Riverside Limited. Judges recognised the onbudget and on-time delivery of the Town Hall’s refurbishment, which was less than building a new facility. Riverside drew attention for not only scooping Auckland’s Westfield Newmarket, but for “providing a benchmark for the ‘new Christchurch’.” The Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub submitted by AECOM was awarded excellence for the Holmes Group Tourism and Leisure Property Award, and He Puna Taimoana swimming pool complex in New Brighton submitted by the council received a merit in the same category. For the Greenstone Group Education Property Award, the Beatrice Tinsley Building at the University of Canterbury Christchurch submitted by the University of Canterbury received excellence and Shirley Boys’ & Avonside Girls’ High Schools submitted by ASC Architects took home merit. The awards, hosted by the Property Council New Zealand celebrate excellence in design and innovation in the built environment.

From paperwork to completion You might be thinking you’ve done the easy part – registered before the deadline on the EQC website for on-sold, over-cap properties – but are dreading what comes next: preparing the paperwork, communicating with the Christchurch City Council, and of course coping with the stress and upheaval of the repair itself.
R
elax! Mitchell James and Paul Hardy, Directors of WD Build and Hardy Projects have been at the forefront of this programme since its inception. They help owners
with the process from the paperwork at the very beginning, to handing over beautifully finished homes at the completion of the project. “We have so much
experience with the EQC process, as well as bringing our building expertise from engineered foundations to architectural finishes,” says Mitchell. Client Ben McLean is delighted with the result he received. “Working with Mitchell and Paul was so easy – they made the process really straightforward when we didn’t have a clue about what was required,” he says. The house required foundation repair, a partial relevel, new flooring, tiling in the bathroom, internal painting, electrics brought to code, and the underfloor insulation (which had been non-compliant) all replaced. The garage had its foundations
dug out and replaced as well as blockwork repaired. “The house looks amazing,” says Ben. “And the estimate of four to six months work was actually completed in 12 weeks!” With Mitchell and Paul on the job the work was very well planned, started quickly, ran smoothly and was completed to a very high standard. “I’d recommend WD Build and Hardy Projects to anyone in a heartbeat,” says Ben. Paul says: “For home owners who have registered with EQC and now need to engage a contactor to get things moving along, just pick up the phone and talk to us about an initial free assessment of your home and we’ll make a plan from there.”

It took 20 years for Graeme and Joy McVicar to obtain consent to transform their picturesque Cashmere farm into a residential housing paradise. Thanks to their tenacity and the recent endeavours of the new owners Cashmere Land Developments along with design engineers Inovo Projects and contractor CCL Construction Contracting, Cashmere Estate now awaits.
N
estled into the foot of the inimitable Port Hills, the subdivision offers the tranquillity of rural living with the convenience of city life. “Just ten minutes from Ballantynes,” is how Cashmere Land Development’s Hamish Wright describes the prime location of the partly sold out premier development. The 140 hectares of gently elevated and green-bordered land will house approximately 380 sections across its six stages, and is widely regarded as one of the last remaining hill areas set aside for development in the city. Surrounded by 100 hectares of nature reserves and walking tracks with land packages starting from just $375,000 it is a boutique one-off opportunity. Stationed below the Christchurch Adventure Park, the gradually sloped sections offer a very rare chance to reap the rewards of the coveted suburb of Cashmere. Favoured for its easy access to the outdoor-lover’s playground, the Port Hills, the leafy suburb is family-friendly and zoned for sought after primary and secondary schools. Cashmere Estate offers residents the best of both worlds. Not only does it boast an outlook to the hills and nature reserves and have Halswell Quarry and Victoria Park right on the doorstep – it’s close to local hospitality and retail offerings. Cashmere’s much-loved local hospitality offerings like the Sign of the Kiwi and Sign of the Takahe, The Cup, The Birdwood and Protocol are within walking distance, with the city’s everburgeoning café, bar and shopping scene a short drive or bike away.
“This carries appeal not only for families looking to establish themselves in the local community,” says Hamish. “But also for young professionals who want to be close to both the action of the city and the peacefulness of the Port Hills. “Empty nesters or retirees will also be choosing a lifestyle location perfect for outdoor pursuits and socialising with friends and family – everyone will want to be invited over for a drink or barbeque here!” Sections range from 470m2 to 1160m2 in size, with development currently at stage three for an estimated July 2021 completion. The estate’s main road and access to Christchurch Adventure Park was recently paved and named McVicar Drive to pay homage to the family which farmed the land and first saw the potential to give hundreds of Cantabrians the opportunity to live in this idyllic location. Lucky purchasers can follow the development’s progress on a dedicated Facebook page, as well as regular email updates from Cashmere Land Developments. “So far, we’ve seen the reserve land be established and existing residents of Cashmere and Worsley’s valleys are enjoying the new flora and fauna in the area,” says Hamish. WindsorCare is a charitable trust which provides independent living and care options for resident through their retirement years, and Sales and Marketing Manager Alison Fleming says the brand-new villas are custom built to accommodate older residents. Level entry into the units and the showers, means safe and easy access for the residents. Wider doors and hallways allow for wheelchairs and walkers, and lower, shallow cupboards ensure easy accessibility. Fully insulated, double-glazed, and fitted with medical call bells and heat pump – the sunny homes have intelligent landscaping to offer aesthetic appeal, with no lawn mowing or laborious gardening. “They are directly opposite The Palms shopping centre, so it is just a quick walk across the road to do the shopping, see a movie or have a coffee,” Alison says. HQ Construction founder Huntley Quinn says the build was initially disrupted by Covid-19, but his team made up the time since – handing the project over three weeks earlier than expected. “There was really good collaboration between the board, the GM the architect and the builder. It’s been a transparent and open relationship right through.” Huntley says the aluminium windows, Rockcote cladding and iron long run roofing make for easy maintenance, and interior features like tiled bathrooms make it easy clean and sleek looking. “They are all maximised on the north facing site so the sun is shining into the living areas. The internal access garages with in-built laundries also adds extra convenience.” Visit an open home on Saturday November 28 or Sunday December 5 from 1pm to 5pm at 16 Golf Links Road, Shirley.
