id you know that an event is neither positive or negative and that it is through our perception that we assign feelings to it? It’s a powerful concept, because it is extremely easy to hear of a break-in and to make an assumption about the perpetrator. But imagine if you knew of the extreme hardship that perpetrator came from; that they were resorting to what they thought was the only way to provide for the young children in their care or if you knew of the mental health difficulties, abuse or trauma they themselves had suffered? What better time to choose to re-frame our narrative than a time when we’re surrounded by negativity? Yes there are some extremely sad stories out there right now, but I like to think that things happen for a reason. Because I’ve also heard some incredibly uplifting ones; people who have discovered their passion and created successful businesses from redundancy; those who have become aware of their health and embarked on a new fitness regime; and those who Metropol Circulation have simply become more empathetic and got to know their neighbours. Sometimes we just need to remember that regardless of whether the glass is half full or half empty, the fact is, it’s refillable. Michaelee-Jayne McDonald may look at home on the rugby ﬁeld or out in the Sumner surf, but this beautiful local is

She broke both her jaw and her nose, requiring about 80 internal stitches. Doctors told her she was lucky not to be paralysed. “I realised that you can’t take life for granted and really do have to make the most of every opportunity,” Michaelee says. “Which is why I put myself into the Portfolio Model search and say yes to every gig/do all the castings that I can!” But that wasn’t to be the last of

the daredevil’s injuries! “In early 2018 I decided it was a great idea to skateboard down a paved hill in Blenheim!” she laughs. “This ended with me once again waking up in hospital. At the time they only did an ultrasound to check if I’d fractured my skull, but there was so much blood they couldn’t see anything!” With constant headaches and worsening vision following the accident, Michaelee’s mum demanded a CT scan. “I actually still remember the look on the lady’s face coming out and saying that the specialist needed to talk about something but then coming out again saying they’ll send it

She had already seen a neurologist in after her 2015 surfing accident and was concerned about wasting the doctor’s time when she was called in the following day. “But this time she said ‘it’s actually not good news, they’ve found a cranial tumour’.” Two years ago she had a craniotomy to remove the tumour. “This meant I had to leave the New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS), I had to pull out of my touch Canterbury team going to nationals, I wasn’t allowed to play rugby, I was unable to do anything related with modelling and I lost all my muscle/general strength,” she says. “I was constantly tired for months, could not stand noise and was unable to eat. I’m a very active person so, as anyone would be, I was gutted. Especially because at the time I was so fit both mentally and physically; feeling like I had to start from scratch was tough.”

After her operation, Michaelee’s right eye was permanently looking right out to the side because the tumour was putting pressure on her orbit. Then, when the part behind her orbit was removed, it lost its support and there was a risk that her eye would not be able to re-adjust itself. Now she says one eye protrudes out more than the other. “This used to make me selfconscious but I’ve learned so, so much since I first began modelling that I now take no notice of it and just enjoy the moment rather than focusing on those thoughts at the back of my mind!” she says in true Michaelee fashion. There is also a distinctive shape on her forehead from the surgery. “I’m constantly getting asked if I’ve hit my head, but it’s actually my bone! I could get filler put in to make my forehead symmetrical if I wanted/needed to but I love the way I am! “Every time I look in the mirror I smile because it’s such a great reminder

of how far I’ve come and what I’ve achieved! You can decide to be a patient, think the worst and ask for sympathy but, for me, there’s no point drowning yourself in sorrow. Regular MRI scans and multiple tests are all a part of my current journey now, so the best remedy by far is to stay positive and set your mind towards something you’re passionate about!” Michaelee is now enjoying the lucrative opportunities coming her way with Portfolio and recent bookings include a television commercial for an international client and a New Zealand fashion label based in Christchurch. “Michaelee is quite a hard case with a personality that is larger than life,” Mel Radford-Brown says. “Michaelee is one of those beautiful girls, inside and out, who truly sparkles and leaves an impact on everyone she meets, she is a very special girl, and without a doubt, has been ‘one to watch’ with us.”

Lockdown is lifted, but it’s going to be some time before life gets back to normal. So although that long haul exotic destination might be on the backburner for the foreseeable, we’ve pulled together some of our hot picks for domestic travels that will make you want to use up all your annual leave. MUST SEE MILFORD SOUNDS: If you’re looking for a truly eye-catching destination, then this is one to add to your itinerary. The breath-taking scenery makes it one of New Zealand’s top visitor attractions. Day tours, cruises, scenic flights, kayaking and fishing… do we need to go on?

BEAUTIFUL BAY OF ISLANDS: There are 144 islands in the subtropical micro-region, so we’re not recommending you visit all of them! What we do suggest however, is that you check out the hotspots like the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Cape Brett or the hole in the rock at Piercy Island. Making your way around the Bay of Islands in a campervan is a pretty great way to burn through a couple of weeks.

BAY OF ISLANDS

QUEUE FOR QUEENSTOWN: We have no doubt that the already popular tourist destination will become a hit with the New Zealand locals. It really is a town that has it all from nightlife to the highlife on the gondola and luge – there’s something for everyone. Not to mention it’s a thrill seeker’s paradise with skydiving, white water rafting and ziplining all available. And for those that just like a quiet getaway, there’s a variety of awesome restaurants for you to try (just make sure to leave a bit of time if you’re going to check out Fergburger). Find plenty more reasons to head to this southern favourite on pages 26-31.

MAKE WAY TO MOUNT ASPIRING: Located in the Otago region, Mount Aspiring National Park has a mixture of everything; remote wilderness, high mountains and river valleys. What’s definitely worth looking at is the Blue Pools track; it’s clear blue pools are truly magnificent.

WALK AROUND WELLINGTON: This destination is our beautiful capital, so it makes sense to add it to the list of must-see places. If you’re a political nut, you can check out the Beehive; film geeks can see Weta Workshops (creators of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit); and anyone can enjoy the Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa Tongarewa). Aside from the attractions, there are plenty of great shops, restaurants and bars both in the city and along the waterfront.

CHECK OUT CHRISTCHURCH: You don’t have to travel very far to find a destination worth visiting. In fact, Christchurch is all that and more! Why not pretend to be a tourist in your own city; you’ll see it in a whole new light! The central city is thriving, the adventure park caters for the ‘outdoorsy’ folk, the ski fields are on our back doorstep and the Botanical Gardens are always pleasant to walk through or picnic in. eter Rowley is an actor well-loved by those who were glued to the telly in the 70s, 80s and 90s. He was the straight guy in many a Kiwiana satirical series, such as McPhail and Gatsby, and most notoriously, the Billy T James Show, of which Peter also wrote the scripts with his late, great best-bud Billy. More recently he stared in 2018’s Mortal Engines. This eternal funny guy still rocks the enthusiastic energy he’s infamous for, even at the suave age of 68. During Stage 4 lockdown he got up-close and personal with his ‘lockdown comedy’ on Facebook every single day. The rendition of traditional funny-bone ticklers, showcased his repertoire of impersonations, accents and elastic expressions – adding the odd sound effect with a click of a talented tongue. He does a Billy Conolly arguably as good as the Scotsman himself. Being too PC or polite doesn’t feature in a Rowley script. It’s comedy in its riotous raw. “I resonate with today’s straight-shooting comedians like Ricky Jervis and I admire Spike Milligan for introducing absurdity into comedy.” Being exceptionally observant is his recipe for creating good comedy. At this year’s World Buskers Festival, he took to the Spiegeltent stage for the Palaver Grand show. “My happy place is stand-up comedy, so I’m all for its resurgence.” Born in Timaru and Christ College schooled, he became the “funny boy” so people would like him – and his grandmother was also a comedian. Peter’s been ensconced back in Christchurch where he grew up, since 2018, after a stint as a Central Otago radio jock. Prior to that, Peter

lived in Melbourne, acting in shows such as Underbelly and Neighbours… and even a Viagra commercial! “I was pretty much an unknown over there, until I walked into a pub and mentioned I was the voice of Dog in the movie Footrot Flats: A Dog’s Tale. It was all matey hugs and beers after that! The Aussie’s love it.” Son of a wartime fighter pilot, Peter’s other passion is flying and he’s also enjoyed MCing and livening up many a corporate event. A voluminous CV of screen and stage stints has led to opportune moments, like having a cuppa with Joan Collins and smoking a cigar with Tommy Lee Jones and Dudley Moore. This comedic character once owned a Russian Vodka bar. And recently he conjured up the recipe to his own gin label. Unsurprisingly christened Laughing Club Gin, the tasteful tipple of London Dry style botanicals, has a beguiling backstory involving Singapore’s Raffles Hotel, sea voyages and British Kings – well matched to its rather glam Art Deco logo. And why gin? “Because you can always have a great laugh with friends over a really good gin – responsibly of course!” A boutique Marlborough distillery is preparing for production. “We’ll use a traditional copper still to produce a top-quality mellifluous mouthfeel, which will be PH perfect.” Peter, who bounced back from a heart attack in 2005, is even more in tune with his creative life mission. His advice to artists and entrepreneurs? “It’s courage. When you don’t have fear, then you can allow yourself to be brilliant.

Wig-ging out Gin Wigmore is using her extraordinary gravelly voice to speak up for the underdog. She tells Melinda Collins about a cause close to her heart.

ritty, powerful and just a little bit badass could equally be used to describe Gin Wigmore’s music or her aesthetic and, while singing is still her first love, the Kiwi powerhouse who wrote her first awardwinning song Angelfire at just 14 is now using her distinctively raspy voice to speak out and speak up. Free for the first time of the constraints of a major label since her debut album, 2009’s Holy Smoke, the Auckland-born, now USbased singer and songwriter is “elated!” “Truly elated. It feels like I have come loose from the pack to ride on my own. And I love it!” Symbolising the milestone, her newlyreleased single Hangover Halo, is about finding contentment in one’s self, its inspiration drawn from “The lessons I have learned from youth into adulthood and in turn having a reflective moment on how simply being granted the opportunity to be born and exist on this amazing planet is one of a humbling and wonderful experience,” she says. “So for that alone, I must raise a toast to being alive.” Putting money where her mouth is, a portion of the proceeds of Hangover Halo are going to support Panthera – an organisation solely devoted to the conservation of the world’s wild cats and their ecosystems. “For this specific single I am focusing on big cats, specifically tigers, as they are facing near extinction,” Wigmore explains. “On a real basic level, I just think tigers are super rad and I don’t want them to die out due to human exploitation. If we are the problem, we are also the solution. We must be vigilant in their protection against poachers. We must be vigilant in protecting their natural habitats and making room on this planet for all other beings so we can co-exist in freedom and peace. And this is exactly what Panthera does; they work to protect the natural habitats for these beautiful animals as well as implement intensive training programs to prevent and apprehend poachers.” The rest of 2020 will see Wigmore release a stream of music which will also support and highlight different endangered animals of the world and the animal charities that will be set up for donation in support of them. But supporting the underdog has recently taken a literal turn for the long-time vegetarian. “I actually took the next step into a fully vegan lifestyle just a few months ago,” she says.

“For me, being vegetarian was not enough. Dairy farming is equally as cruel and f***ed up in its treatment of animals to be able to satisfy the demand on a global scale, so I decided I wasn’t going to be a part of that demand any longer.” Singing was always her first love and despite now adding ‘hotelier’ to her list of professional credentials with the purchase of a hotel in the desert in Palm Springs, it is singing that still has her heart. It was music through which Wigmore first connected with her nowhusband, musician Jason Butler, who heads artist-oriented collective 333 Wreckords, and released Wigmore’s latest music. “It’s very comforting to be in a creative collective that I love, respect and share similar beliefs with,” Wigmore says. “I can 100 percent focus on my art without compromise and then completely trust the people working with me for their guidance, constructive criticism and approach to it all. It really is an awesome crew to be in.” Together Butler and Wigmore have been heavily involved with the #BlackLivesMatter protests recently. “It has been a very big and monumental moment in time on all fronts!” “LA is showing me what it’s made of right now,” she says of her new homebase. “It’s loud, it’s free and it’s very powerful. The diversity, the perseverance for growth and change, the public outcry demanding justice for all and throughout all of this, there is a true feeling of community amongst the city. This is the precise reason I moved to LA and the reason I will continue to enjoy living here for many years to come.” Wigmore has always packed more into her life than most. On top of the hotel and musicmaking, she’s balancing a two-year-old, a newborn and an incontinent German shepherd rescue dog she added to the family just before the US went into lockdown. “It made my world shrink overnight,” she says of lockdown. “It made me realise, almost instantaneously, the seemingly mundane outings were the ones I took for granted the most. Something as simple as a walk along the beach to see the horizon and the expanse to our lives was taken away; something as easy as popping into the store to grab a loaf of bread was now a fear-inducing exercise of patience, rules and restriction. “It has been tough mentally more than anything, but it has provided me with a huge amount of gratitude for my two healthy boys, loving husband, awesome dogs and generous friends.”

Why weight matters Bella is a wonderful example of how a successful weight loss programme can lead to a major improvement in wellbeing. Bella’s owners love her but as she crept up to a biggest ever weight of 48kg there came a turning point when she became lame in her left hind leg. A tough love conversation was needed.

t her current weight, Bella was a very poor candidate for a surgical repair of a ruptured cruciate for instance. Bella had tried several diets, but Labradors have a food drive that defies any but the most well-organized of plans. Bella is now a curvy 39kg and is on a happy path to her goal weight of around 32kg. “We have achieved this with a combination of clever diet and exercise in our underwater treadmill. Her transformation is amazing,” says Wigram Vet Geoff Mehrtens. Underwater treadmill exercise has many benefits for overweight dogs. Even elderly arthritic dogs enjoy exercising in a carefully managed warm water environment. Underwater treadmill exercise is a great way to rebuild wasted muscles. Muscle mass rapidly increases with minimal risk of injury to stressed ligaments and joints. Geoff says, “Bella is more lively, enthusiastic and her skin has improved. She has literally shed years off her life and is looking forward to getting back to her previously active lifestyle.” Obesity is a sensitive topic and unfortunately the clear benefits of a healthy bodyweight are often lost in a

Big battle for At the age of four, Lachie Connell and his family spent 229 nights at someone else’s house. WORDS MELINDA COLLINS

he day before this mammoth sleepover, everything was relatively normal for the West Coast family of five, that includes younger brother Malachi, older brother Silas and parents, Pat Connell and Jeanna Abelson. That is, apart from the regular fevers, the unusual bruising and the lethargy Lachie was experiencing. “He’d been having some pretty random fevers, off and on,” Jeanna says. “The doctor would say it’s just a virus. It would go high then go away, but quite regularly. Then maybe two or three weeks out from diagnosis he got tired and lethargic at school and wasn’t quite himself. Then he started developing bruises. He was an active little boy but nothing that explained the bruising.” So, on 30 August 2018, Jeanna took him back to the local GP where she had

been able to secure an appointment with a nurse. That nurse pretty quickly brought in the doctor and that doctor took one look at him and sent a shocked Jeanna straight to Greymouth Hospital. “She said there were some pretty serious illnesses that displayed like this and one is actually leukaemia,” Jeanna says. Blood tests immediately showed cause for concern and from there, the family went straight to Christchurch with just the clothes on their backs. Lachie was admitted to the ward at Christchurch Hospital at 7pm that night. The following day he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). “From there he was in hospital for a month,” Jeanna says. “He had a very intense round of chemotherapy; he had a total of nine

months of intense chemo, but the first round is particularly hard where he couldn’t walk for a month. But he got through it, he carried on. “Now he’s in maintenance treatment.” The aim of maintenance treatment is to get rid of any remaining leukaemia cells. An intense regime, it involves daily chemotherapy medication, antibiotics to prevent lung infections, steroids to help destroy leukaemia cells and prevent reactions, Intravenous chemotherapy (IV chemo) and Intrathecal Chemotherapy (IT chemo) delivered by lumber puncture every three months to kill any leukaemia cells that might have spread to the brain and spinal cord, along with regular tests and check-ups with his oncologist. The brave little battler just turned six earlier this month.

Home away from home

n the first month of treatment in Christchurch, Lachie was in the hospital almost full-time, so it was critical for the family to be close by. Jeanna and Pat did sleep shifts and play-time shifts to enable them to be with Lachie and keep their youngest Malachi – who turned two the month following Lachie’s hospital admission – occupied in the Children’s Haematology and Oncology Centre, where Lachie was being treated. That’s when Ronald McDonald House South Island (RMHSI) stepped up. A registered charity, RMHSI supports families with food and accommodation in one of their centres when their child is in a hospital away from home, free

of charge. Having left their lives on the West Coast to begin treatment in Christchurch, RMHSI took the stress, worry and cost out of the equation for the young family. It enabled them to stay close by the hospital during the initial treatment and allowed them time to make Christchurch their permanent base for the longer-term treatment programme. The boys named RMHSI the ‘party house’ from the fun environment created when all the families in the 26-bedroom Christchurch House get together for dinner. In Lachie’s first round of treatment, the 6pm dinner was the only thing that would entice him out of his room, even when he wasn’t up to eating. Having lost her first son when he was a baby, Jeanna is aware of just how extraordinary this service is. “He became unwell at three months old. Same thing happened, we were rushed to hospital, but there was no Ronald McDonald House back then, just an old janitor closet that was small and uncomfortable,” she says. “Ronald McDonald House became

something so special to us. It feels like home. It’s a warm and friendly environment which makes going through treatment less stressful. “There’s a real family feeling there, it’s a loving environment. All the staff are so incredibly warm, they become your family… your Ronald McDonald House family.” Last year, RMHSI became a ‘home away from home’ to 1281 families, saving them more than $1.2 million in accommodation expenses. Already, the organisation has helped more than 200 families this year. However, like many charities, RMHSI has had to cancel its major fundraising events this year – Invercargill, Christchurch and Queenstown Supper Clubs. So the organisation is hoping to raise more than $50,000 to support Kiwi families via its Host a Roast™ community fundraising event which launched this month. During the month of July, host a roast and invite your whānau, friends or colleagues to attend for a $20 donation. This will go towards supporting families who require a ‘home away from home’ while needing hospital treatment for their child. “Host a Roast™ is all about celebrating the precious moments created with family and friends around the table. Now, more than ever, it’s an experience we can all appreciate,” RMHSI Chief Executive Mandy Kennedy says. “Our commitment to serving families who must travel to Christchurch or Invercargill for their child’s medical treatment is unwavering. My tenure as Headmaster at Nelson College began very recently, in June 2020. My educational philosophy is simple…to make amazing young people even more amazing. t’s worth the ride alone on the Skyline Gondola, to drink it all in. The gracious old lady of the lake, TSS Earnslaw, will resume faithfully plying Wakatipu’s waters in early July, but if you’re after a fresher scoop of floating pleasure, board Southern Discoveries’ gleaming catamaran. They operate daily excursions to Mt. Nicholas Station, one of New Zealand’s most historic, family run merino sheep stations. Spanning 100,000 acres of golden high country terrain, the 45-minute scenic cruise down Lake Wakatipu affords glorious vistas of Mt. Earnslaw, Cecil Peak, and the tucked away valley beneath Mt. Creighton, where the Hollywood set have previously purchased homes, including Arnie Schwarzenegger and John Travolta. Arriving at Mt. Nicholas Station, you have a variety of add-on sightseeing options including a 4WD Safari, a two-hour high country walk or the Woolshed Experience. I opted for the latter, which was a wonderfully hands-on exposition of merino wool’s journey from fresh fleece to top-end clothing. All Mt. Nicholas Station merino wool is sold to Icebreaker. As a premium wine-growing region, swooned over for its pinot noir, a swirl of wine trail tours can whisk you across the vineyards of the Gibbston Valley and beyond. I cheated and headed straight to The Winery, a one-stop-tasting shop in the heart of Queenstown and also Arrowtown (the Queenstown site is yet to reopen). It’s indulgently effortless, where you can taste over 80 wines, including several dozen delicious pinot noirs, at the press of a button. All of the industry’s rockstars are showcased, including Valli Bannockburn, Mt. Difficulty, Black Ridge and Amisfield. Complement your wine sampling, by grazing from a flavourful platter of local cheese, salami and olives. Speaking of food, if the billowing tangle of humanity, pre-Covid, spilling along the footpath of Shotover Street, outside Fergburger, turned you off from sampling the gourmet delights in buns – now’s your chance

without the crowds. One of my favourite noshing spots is Akarua Wines & Kitchen by Artisan, just up the road by Lake Hayes. On Steamer Wharf, graze heartily from the share plates at Public Kitchen & Bar, a convivial celebration of local produce overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the gazillion dollar views. Another recommended fuss-free experience is the Ballarat Trading Company, stunningly outfitted in the style of an 1850’s trading post, with lip-smacking gourmet food. Walking options abound and heading east from the town centre, the Frankton Arm Walkway is a heart-stealer, with its unobstructed lake and mountain views. A coffee stop beckoned at Boat Shed Café & Bistro. Its backstory is fascinating, set in the restored New Zealand Railways Shipping Office after beginning life as a store in the 1870s. In 1936 it was bought by Frank Duncan, a Dunedin lawyer, who moved the building from the town centre to its current waterfront location. From The Boat Shed, the gravel walkway wends its way along the shoreline to Frankton, passing a quaint parade of rustic Kiwi cribs – a laid-back world away from the pretence of some of Queenstown’s more recent glamour pad developments. They’re anything but flashy. It is such a great antidote to savour this unmolested vestige of old Queenstown. Ten kilometres west of Queenstown, on the road to Glenorchy, I enjoyed a brisk hike in the Mt. Creighton Scenic Reserve. After a steady climb, the peaceful trail through native bush steeped in goldmining history leads to Lake Dispute. There’s a variety of options, but this 90-minute loop circuit hits the sweet spot. Not only does it give you the chance to gawp at some of the under-theradar celebrity hideaway trophy houses, strung across the valley, but the elevated vistas across the lake to Cecil Peak and Walter Peak are supreme, delivering a fresh scoop of Queenstown’s unstoppable beauty.

he Southern Lakes ski areas are all set to open in coming days, with Coronet Peak and Cardrona Alpine Resort scheduled to open on 26 June, Treble Cone scheduled to open on 27 June and The Remarkables Ski Area set to open on 4 July. Destination Queenstown interim chief executive Ann Lockhart says snow fans should start digging out their ski gear, tuning skis and snowboards and booking flights to visit Queenstown this winter, joining visitors from all over New Zealand. “Winter at Alert Level 1 means that Queenstown’s ski areas have very few restrictions—skiers and boarders will be truly free to

Thoughtful and ﬂexible additions to a 1950s midcentury home in Sumner, originally designed by architect Paul Pascoe, have earned Duval O’Neill and his team at Herriot Melhuish O’Neill Architects a place on the shortlist of the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ 2020 Regional Awards.

nderstanding the eminence of Paul Pascoe (himself an NZIA Gold Medallist) in mid-century New Zealand architecture, the home owners knew they needed to find an exceptional architect who understood and appreciated modernist properties. Hearing that Duval had his own midcentury home, they realised they wouldn’t do better and the finished property reflects the empathy of its designer with the principles of the modernist movement. The small three-bedroom, one-bathroom house is now transformed into a much larger

four-bedroom with ensuite and a new laundry, as well as a second living room that can double as a sleeping area. The bedroom addition frames a new sheltered internal courtyard while also acting as the end point for the gallery link and a portal to the contained garden. Central to Duval’s design concept is the rationalisation of circulation and entrance areas, retaining the long garden view as well as repeating the roofline and choosing materials which respected the essence of the original Pascoe design. The addition features the same cedar boards, copper nails, door

handles, recycled rimu flooring, window frames, eaves, interior and exterior colours, and overall proportions. The HMOA team has ensured a clear division between adult space and the children’s bedrooms and play areas. Owens Building partnered with HMOA on this special project and Director David Owens enjoyed both the clients’ and Duval’s commitment to the original architecture of the home. Owens Building places a premium on integrity, ensuring every project represents its commitment to excellence. “Our delivery style and our

relationships with clients and designers is of utmost importance to us, and often leads to great friendships forming,” David says. “Also, as enthusiasts of mid-century architecture ourselves, it was a joy to be part of the project team,” David says. Owens Building relocated to Wanaka in 2016 and has since become involved in a number of projects involving passive house principles. David and family are soon to move into a newly constructed home which incorporates these principles and elements of mid-century design, so offering the best of both worlds.

The seemingly unsolvable challenges of adjacent sites were the ultimate inspiration for NZIA shortlisted Hofmans Architects, when designing these two striking homes in their home village of Arrowtown.

uitable for a family of five, each home makes the best of the uplifting views and embodies spatially efficient floor areas, while making a virtue of the site restraints. The finished homes are not simply a visually pleasing counterpoint to an iconic landscape, but express virtuosity in design as well. The very steep slope has a no-build line as the top twothirds of the site, a schist seam running through the middle of the site and a tight five metre maximum height plane. These factors demanded an efficient design set within the lower portion of both sites. The usual 4m separation was successfully reduced to 2m, which allowed the houses to sit independently of each other whilst increasing the buildable area. By tilting the side wall and dropping the roof pitch of one property, this allowed the other to achieve good winter sun. “We are always inspired by our

local environment and like to use natural materials that sit well in our surroundings,” Director Maarten Hofmans says. “The Chinese miners were masters in using local materials that came to hand and creating shelter in an efficient as possible form - something that we have drawn inspiration from. We strive to achieve simple and easily understood solutions. These homes are two simple sculpted shaped forms that nestle into the hillside.” Corten clads the firewood storage walls and folded cedar wraps the forms, while pushed in recesses define the entry points. MWH Construction brought the designs to reality and Maarten says, “It was a pleasure to work with MWH, their enthusiasm for a well-executed product always makes us happy as Architects”. Director of MWH, Myles Herschell says, “the aesthetic of this project was a real drawcard for our team – the houses resemble folded cedar origami. Also, the opportunity to work with Hofmans Architects: their creativity, receptiveness to change and solutions is always a pleasure.” The philosophy at MWH is to push boundaries, reinterpret styles and challenge notions of what construction can be. Transparency, adaptability, teamwork plus Myles’ own design degree enable MWH to work at the boundaries of architectural inspiration.

Lockdown lowdown How has the team worked together during and after lockdown? We have a work group chat ‘Earth Matters’ and we use this regularly anyway to keep in touch. During lockdown we shared recipes, what we were doing that day, TV inspo etc. It was good because we could still talk about how we were all feeling, which changed on a daily basis. When you spend so much time together you really miss those connections. We had a couple of video staff meetings which were hilarious, none of us

You’re originally from Christchurch before hitting it big on TVNZ 2’s Project Runway, where are you based now? Auckland! I love both Auckland and Christchurch so will always live between the two but needed to be up here to get a head-start in the fashion industry. It was the right move. It’s an industry that’s said to take no prisoners, how have you been able to take your reality TV success and turn this into a long term business? It’s definitely a tough industry but I think the way I handled being on the show is true to how I handle the industry – ruthless positivity and by working with like-minded people that share the same problem-solving and forwardthinking attitude!

What’s the most fulfilling part of what you do? Oh goodness where to start!? It’s the little things like sitting in my studio in the early hours of the morning thinking, “this is my space, this is my business, how amazing!” And then the obvious ones such as seeing customers and loved ones wearing and feeling amazing in my designs, coming up with new ideas and working with beautiful fabrics. Sewing and completing garments is a really fulfilling activity in itself!

What attracted you to the design field? It’s one of those things where when you know, you know. According to mum I was dressing myself before I could talk! But I have also always been interested in the construction and technical side of producing clothing, so it all grew from there.

What do the next 12 month have in store for you and the brand? I try to separate the two where possible (it’s impossible!), but for starters, we have a great summer collection coming with our first exclusive print! I’m very excited for that and often find myself wearing the samples around the studio. I hope to pick up a few new stockists and do my best to get through what I’m sure is going to be an interesting year ahead. At last! I can Hear Again! During the recent COVID-19 lockdown, we experienced a huge change to our daily lives. The normal buzz of activities and work slowed to a more pedestrian pace and it gave most people a chance to return to a simpler, family life. That is, if both of your ears were working!

hen your main activities are chatting to the family and watching TV, you very quickly realise how important your hearing is and how much we take this for granted. While locked down, Hear Again received many calls from desperate people whose ears had become blocked with wax and had no options for getting this removed. For some people, this meant a very frustrating several weeks wait until clinics were allowed to re-open and provide the relief they needed. This resulted in many people saying, “At last! I can Hear Again!”.

Managing Director Steve Foster explains, “Wax production in your ears varies greatly from person to person”. “Wax is your ears’ natural cleaning mechanism and is mostly made up of dead skin cells. Some people never have wax blockages forming, but for others it is a regular occurrence. This will not normally cause much of a problem until the ear canal becomes fully blocked, at which point it sounds like you have gone underwater in that ear! It is always best to have excessive wax removed before this occurs, as it is the difference between a routine and pretty urgent procedure.”

Hear Again can remove earwax easily and comfortably using the very latest microsuction techniques. This involves using a small vacuum tube to gently pull the wax out of your ear canal. The procedure takes only a few moments and gives instant relief from a blocked ear. For anyone who has had ear syringing previously, this is very different; as it places no pressure or strain on your ear drum. Ear blockages can also be things other than wax. Steve recalls, “We have removed many interesting things over the years: sand, insects, glitter, beads, seeds and even some 20 year old Play-Doh! Ear infections are also quite common and tend to

stick around for many months if not treated correctly. These can cause itching or burning sensations in the ear and can result in a rather unsavoury discharge leaking out of the ear. Medication to cure these infections rarely work well if the ear is blocked with discharge, so removal of the blockage by micro-suction is the best way to prepare an ear for effective medication.” The friendly team at the Hub in Hornby are happy to check your ears at no cost to see if you need them cleaned and the cost for two ears micro-suctioning is only $45. In a wok, heat the vegetable oil until really hot and fry the chilli flakes, garlic and ginger for two minutes.

400g NZ pork fillet, finely sliced 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp chilli flakes 3 garlic cloves, finely diced 1 knob ginger, finely diced 1 cup small broccoli pieces 1 cup sugar snap peas 1 red pepper, finely sliced 1 cup bean sprouts 1 bunch asparagus, sliced 1 carrot, finely sliced into matchsticks

Add the sliced pork and fry until cooked – about five minutes. Add the broccoli, carrot and asparagus and fry until soft. Add the red pepper and snap peas and fry for a further two minutes. Add the seasoning sauces and bean sprouts, then toss together and serve immediately.

You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief from the country’s hospitality operators as we moved into Alert Level 1. Gathering restrictions have been removed and all current COVID-19 rules on businesses and services have lifted.

he move to Level 1 means that many hospitality operators can now begin to reclaim a sense of normality and this will provide customers the much-needed confidence to go out and safely socialise (and spend) again. Hospitality New Zealand Chief Executive, Julie White, says our team of five million should be proud of the significant achievement we’ve made in getting to no active COVID-19 cases. “The hospitality sector has also shown incredible resilience throughout this difficult time banding together to ensure that the health and safety of our communities remains paramount,” she says. “They’ve been forced to adapt to different ways of operating

as each level has decreased, and the restrictions that hospitality operators (and their customers) have had to wrestle with have been incredibly challenging – so, we’re very excited to be getting back to business.” Hospitality New Zealand expects that with restrictions such as social distancing and table service restraints lifted, businesses in the hospitality and accommodation sectors will start to recover and slowly return, over time, to profitability. While some accommodation providers and leisure hotspots saw a return to normal visitor and occupancy levels over Queen’s Birthday weekend, the following day’s return saw a huge dip – with a mere five percent occupancy rate in

the accommodation sector, demonstrating the long road ahead to recovery. The full year forecast predicts 30 percent occupancy (at best) for accommodation and hotel providers. Similarly, the challenges of COVID-19 have also led to a 30 percent reduction in employment across the hospitality sector. While the recently announced changes to the Wage Subsidy extension is expected to assist an additional 40,000 businesses across the country, this alone won’t be enough to save many operators, Julie says. If you’re financially able to, perhaps it’s time to consider taking a domestic ‘Staycation’ (booked through a local travel agent, of course!), heading

out for a much-needed date night at a local restaurant and grabbing some gift vouchers from your favourite venues so you can share the love! “The hospitality sector relies on people – tourists, office workers, social gatherings and foot traffic,” Julie says. “With Kiwis now encouraged to go back to their workplaces, this presents a huge opportunity for people to support their local hospitality businesses. “As a nation, we’ve shown solidarity and performed incredibly well to fight this health crisis. With the transition to Level 1, we can all step up and play our part in supporting the full recovery of Kiwi businesses which have been hit so hard.”

PREPARATION:

To make the labneh, combine the yoghurt, garlic, oregano, thyme, chilli and salt in a bowl. Stir well to combine.

Set a sieve over a large bowl. Within the sieve, lay a piece of cheesecloth or new, clean kitchen cloths. Pour the yoghurt mixture into the middle of the cloth, then bring the cloth edges to the centre and secure with a peg or clip.

Place in the fridge and leave to drain for at least 24 hours, and a maximum of 48 hours. Carefully remove the mixture from the cloth and place into a container and keep refrigerated.

Moroccan ﬂavours are the ultimate way to add ﬂavour to chicken and we’ve got a nice, easy recipe for you to follow.

INGREDIENTS: Labneh: • 400g tub The Collective Straight Up Unsweetened Yoghurt • 1 clove garlic, minced • ½ tsp dried oregano • ½ tsp dried thyme • Pinch of chilli flakes • ½ tsp salt Chicken skewers: • 500g chicken thigh, diced • 2 tsp Moroccan seasoning/Ras el Hanout • ½ tsp turmeric powder • ½ tsp smoked paprika • Extra virgin olive oil • 1 tbsp runny honey • 1 lemon • 2 pita breads, toasted • Fresh pomegranate, mint and rocket to serve

To make the chicken skewers, marinate the chicken by combining the diced thigh, Moroccan seasoning, turmeric, paprika, a drizzle of olive oil, honey and zest of one lemon. Season with salt and pepper, then stir to coat. Cover and marinate in the fridge for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Thread the chicken pieces onto eight metal or soaked wooden skewers. Bring a BBQ or frying pan to a medium high heat, then cook for 5-7 minutes on each side or until lightly charred and cooked through. Cut the zested lemon in half, and place flesh-side down onto the BBQ to caramelise.

To serve, spread the labneh down the side of a large plate, board or platter. Lay the chicken skewers alongside the labneh, with fresh rocket beneath. Garnish the labneh with olive oil, pomegranate, chopped mint and pepper. Serve with the caramelised lemon and toasted pita bread immediately.

Tavern ticks all of the boxes Marty and Naomi Fuller are the proud owners of The Elmwood Trading Co., a locally loved tavern that has an amazing community around it. Metropol caught up with Marty about how they’ve been getting on since taking over the reins 22 months ago.

ith a massive grin on his face he tells us that they’ve been “Absolutely thrilled with the response! “We wanted to create a friendly, value for money, local tavern – almost like a home away from home. The Elmwood was already going well, it was established but had a lot of potential in its food operation. So, we brought our chef, Henry Liang, his kitchen and some front of house staff from our previous hotel Trevinos,” Marty raves. A new space meant undertaking the creation of new menus and the addition of daily specials; not to mention adding to their extensive wine list. Some notable newbies are the garlic prawn hot pots and (a personal favourite of ours) the red curry lamb shank – both pictured. The Elmwood is extremely versatile with a separate function area as part of the restaurant, where “we can host meetings, seminars, fundraising quiz nights and birthday parties,” Marty says. “If the event is big enough, we can utilise the whole restaurant.”

If you’re just popping in, they also have a gaming lounge with 18 gaming machines, TAB, huge tv screens and a great outdoor area with year-round heating. Walking into those double doors you can feel the warm energy radiating from the restaurant, the staff and the lovely owners. A cut above the rest Making the most of the lockdown, Douglas Furniture took out the mirror to reﬂect on its processes and how the team can better improve them. After operating in Christchurch for more than 65 years and being one of the more established joineries in New Zealand, they managed to ﬁnd uncharted territory. We caught up with Howard Nossiter about their latest expedition in the furniture world.

and then throughout the build speaking almost daily to them about the finer details.” The clients met a few builders before deciding to build with Fleetwood. “We felt like Sam is totally honest, we definitely got that vibe from him. Plus, we visited a friend’s house that Sam had built and they are really happy with it. The house is a mix of modern and traditional design, featuring crisp clean lines. Nine aluminium columns run the full height of both floors, making the home feel grand and telling a strong architectural story. Signature touches abound, starting with the blush pink front door which hints at the stylish interior throughout and leads to the kitchen/living area with its stunning views, balcony, and custom balustrade. “The team really enjoyed seeing all of the finishing details come together at the end, when the build became a home for our excited owners,” Sam says.

It has been the darling of recent times – millennial pink has appeared in all walks of life from clothing (men’s and women’s), products, accessories, hair and makeup, and interiors.

t’s a colour that may not be going away anytime soon but the sweeter truer shades of pink we’ve been seeing in recent years are morphing in two directions – to dusky peach/nudes and to soft fresh lilacs. In this room, using two muted peachy pinks together means that the space doesn’t become overpowering. The lighter colour, Resene Sorbet, is used as a

neutral, leaving the darker colour Resene Just Dance, as a feature wall to frame the white linen sofa. Adding to the soft, weathered look is a distressed floor where Resene Poured Milk is used over a basecoat of Resene Rebel, then sanded back in random areas. The pendant light is in Resene Despacito, the tall vase is Resene Irresistible and the small vase is in Resene Rose Gold, a new

metallic from Resene. As with millennial pink, this newer colour is not one specific colour but can be many. Think salmon, wafer, biscuit, nude and pale coral. In combination, these colours are like a pale, glorious sunset. The surge of smoky pink and peach into our current culture has opened the door for androgynous and adult pinks

of so many different shades. It’s gentle, compassionate, composed, free-spirited nurturing and youthful. It can be used as an accent colour or as a neutral depending on which version of the colour you choose – the muddier versions work well as neutrals. How do you make small spaces feel bigger? When decorating a small room, ‘less is more’. If furniture and accessories block the view into a room, it will look cramped. Moving furniture away from walkways will open up the space and make it feel larger. Use a few large, simple pieces of furniture or accessories in place of several smaller pieces, which make a space look cluttered. With open space and large blocks of colour, the room will appear to be more calm and comfortable. At such a time as this and now more than ever, it is prudent to seek the guidance of a registered professional architect with the training and experience to add value, so that your project potential can be maximised. Of course, working with an architect does involve a cost, but it pays to remember that the architect’s fee is only a small part of the total cost. With a professional architect comes peace of mind that the design process is in the best possible hands. They will take the time needed to understand your priorities, what’s important to you and how you want to live, with the site and environment also feeding into the design process. In times of austerity, this is still the best way to protect your investment. Update a tired kitchen For many of us, a stretch of time to reﬂect and plan was an unexpected addition to our year, a rare positive effect of our lockdown experience. With time on our hands, all to be spent in our homes, we were able to think about what we would like to change, and take the time to consider and research options.

By changing the colour, you get to reuse and so reduce waste going to landfill and energy used in manufacturing new.”

This year the longstanding company is further enhancing its green credentials, working with suppliers to start phasing out solvent based products in favour of waterborne applications. “We find that many kitchens are already well laid out and some are kitchens by name designers. They often only need minor alterations such as changing a cupboard to drawers, removing or replacing cupboards over fridge, microwave areas or oven surrounds,” Monique says. “A fresh surface and adding new handles can be all you need to bring a kitchen up to date.” The team can strip back surfaces but it is not usually

necessary. “We can recolour any type of kitchen surface that manufacturers can make. Even doors where the plastic coating is breaking down, we can remove the coating and apply the colour you want to the underlying substrate,” Monique adds. Often clients are happy with the existing colour of their joinery but some parts of the kitchen have become a little tired. “A refinish to match the original and its like a new kitchen again. It is also an easy way to refresh the kitchen if you are looking to sell, or if you have just moved in and are looking to make your new home ‘feel like you’.”

Local shops get upgrade Earthquake strengthening work has started at the block of shops on the corner of Straven and Riccarton Roads.

towards the end of the project. “It’s being brought up to 100 percent of the building code. We’ve been working with the building owners for the last eight months through the design and consenting process, and property managers and tenants.” The Christchurch City Council has worked alongside Priority Projects to allow the utilisation of parking spaces to help minimise disruption to pedestrian and traffic flows in the immediate area. His Rockinghorse Road project encapsulates this holistic approach: attention to detail has produced a home that performs to a very high standard, is energy efficient and does not require heating during winter. An enhanced timber frame utilises thicker timber and an airtight membrane with interior service cavities to reduce thermal bridging and achieve airtightness and provide well above standard thermal

performance and triple-glazed windows are a feature. Clad in a combination of macrocarpa vertical timber board, and batten and shiplap profile, the three distinct volumes within the home are simple in their shapes, but the subtle complexity of Max’s design means the house marries with its natural setting at sea level on the estuary. “The main idea was to minimise the visual scale of the building through fragmenting mass,” Max says. The flood prone situation next to the estuary needed a solution and Max responded to the challenge by creating a small hill as a base for the

second volume, with each volume connected by a bridge, smaller in scale, this volume includes the entrance. “I love the way the three volumes relate to each other, it is a real accomplishment of creativity meeting context,” Max says. Peter Bielski Managing Director of Ethos homes built the house. “He was thorough the whole way and communication was clear – it was good to talk through issues on site,” Max adds. Peter says, “working with Max was a good fit: his design was stunning and building high-performance homes is our forté”.

t was Skoda that produced the velocipede bicycle and the later Czechdesigned Panzer 38(t) armored vehicle became one of the world’s best at the time. The 1960s saw an increase in exporting from Czechoslovakia, with models like the Octavia Super and in the 70s and 80s it was the Rapid and Estelle that were the big sellers. Today Skoda is one of the world’s best car developers, with revenue in the billions. Now part of the Volkswagen family, Skoda is at the top of its automotive

game. The 2018 Superb was my personal car of the year with some outstanding features and ‘bang for buck’. It’s a theme that has continued with the new Skoda Karoq 110kW MY20. With a price point of $44,990 for petrol and $50,990 for diesel, you can start going over the list of features and it’s got everything it takes to tick the box as a great value, strong performing family SUV. Automatic tail gate opening is also a good start. The turbo petrol version seems to be quite economical on gas.

The 110kW provides enough power and 250 Nm, enough torque; 0-100 in 8.8 isn’t a Ferrari but it’s not meant to be one! The cabin has a simple but elegant interior with lots of room and expansive windscreen and Apple car play and connectivity are downright easy. The lines are so good, it took me a good five minutes to find the USB point hidden under a cover near the centre console. With a five-year warranty up to 150,000km, it seems like a pretty simple buy. Electric folding, heated side mirrors are great for the winter days and the Skoda carpet lighting on the doors allow you to look for the puddles when stepping out after a good rain. Leather seating isn’t standard, but you can up spec the whole car including alloys and steering wheel for an extra $3,500. The breaking assist is nice and gentle too, airbags, side assist and reversing camera are all there, so for the safety conscious, you get a lot for this low price point.
