“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee Dear Friday night emailer, I usually start my email responses with ‘thank you for your email’. Unfortunately, in this case, I cannot do that. I’m unsure if I’m more shocked or saddened by what you chose to email me; a complete stranger and someone for which you had no idea of what was going on in my life at that moment. You mentioned your letter to the editor was not ‘publishable’ and I agree, but it was also not ‘send-able’. Yet for some reason, you thought it was OK to send it to me. Is it because the act of emailing de-humanises the recipient? Because I suspect – or at least I hope – that the email you sent me wasn’t how you would speak to your own family; your own friends; even your own acquaintances. If you’re about to click ‘send’ on an email you wouldn’t want someone sending your own child, then don’t click send. I’m not sure whether it was Tiki Taane’s tattoos or mohawk that offended you so. Had you read the associated article, ABC youAUDITED would have found that there is so much more to Tiki than tattoos and a mohawk. In fact, you would have found the back story of one of this country’s most prodigious talents; the story of a father; of a partner; of someone’s son; the inspiring story of how music saved him and of the beautiful way he proposed to the love of his life, with theirAUDITED children alongside. I’m not angry with you for sending that email. If anything, I’m sad for you. I’m sad because the world is a big, vibrant melting pot of diversity and you’re never going to see the beauty in that.

A global odyssey By Tracey Edwardes
It was a “life is too short” moment that led a photographer from Loburn on a journey to meet the people who have lived on earth the longest.
L
ast year, Katherine Williams of Tandem Photography travelled to some of the world’s most interesting crevices, which culminated in her winning New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) Nikon Photographer of the Year 2019. After a back injury that kept her out of the action for 10 months, she realised that saying “we’ll do it in three years’ time” just meant continual postponement. Katherine committed to take her husband and business partner Neil – also an award-
winning photographer – and her two daughters, on an educational worldwide odyssey. The goal was to capture the essence of her chosen photographic subjects – centenarians. Deciding on the ambitious project came after one of those unexplainable eureka moments. “I knew it was something I just had to do.” The creative couple refinanced to fund the trip. “But it wasn’t until literally the week before leaving that everything came together including renting our home out to make it possible.”

One of the first stops was the lush jungle of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, where the family slept on bamboo slats with no mattress or pillow, the patter of piglets and roosters outside – and the odd snake wriggling across the path. The seven-month journey then traversed the likes of Japan, Alaska, Cuba, Costa Rica, Croatia, Mexico and Montenegro, and the less-trodden paths of USA, Italy, France and the Greece Isles. “I was confident my daughters would learn immeasurably more about life, not by just having conversations about different cultures, but by walking amongst them. The only way was to show them, not just tell. I wanted to empower my children – completely and utterly – with an appreciation of experience and basic street smarts. Nothing beats that immersion.” She enlisted locals as interpreters to help her extract the stories behind the well-lived faces. “These people all had something special to share,” she says. “It’s not just a life story engraved into their facial lines, but their surroundings I capture to tell the story too – inviting a peek into their environment.”
Katherine has curiosity and deep empathy for the people she photographs. “One of the common threads for the reason of their longevity was tenacity for life, the ability to ride the storms – those hardships, trials and tribulations.” Dramatic landscapes, such as daunting mountains tumbling into frothy seas, didn’t escape her lens either. On harnessing courage to embark on an adventure, Katherine says, “You need the fortitude to jump in head first, then back that up without needing to know every detail. It will just fall into place.” Back home, an enchanted heritage building in Ferry Road houses the studio for wedding and portrait photography. However, for her evolving creative project, Katherine is looking for more centenarians of different nationalities to immortalise in a website, book and exhibition. “Some of my subjects have already died, so it will be in honour of them and their families. It’s nowhere near complete yet – but I’m comfortable with it being a slow project.” www.katherinewilliams.co.nz

WORLDWIDE MUSICAL PHENOMENON By Tracey Edwardes
A Postmodern Jukebox (PMJ) show is a toe-tapping banquet for the senses and it’s returning to a venue that befits the sumptuous performance.
T
he timely Welcome to the Twenties 2.0 tour will touch down at Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal on Saturday 19 October. Scott Bradlee, founder of the Postmodern Jukebox legacy, has crafted a worldwide phenomenon with modern songs transformed into the style of classic genres, such as the razzamatazz of the roaring ’20s. “And here we are, entering the ‘20s again,” says singer Aubrey Logan. Aubrey is one of the

favourites in the revolving cast of dozens, featured in this spring’s Antipodean tour. It’s her first visit to New Zealand, but the fifth time for PMJ, “and I just can’t wait,” she says. The unique band has reached 3.5 million YouTube subscribers Bad Blood and Benny and Jetts being among Aubrey’s claim to fame. As well as a mellifluous voice and spine-tingling fouroctave range, she plays a mean trombone. It’s not important to be impressive, she says.

hard on your voice and body. “I say to the band after the shows, ‘guys, I can either have bad sleep or alcohol – pick one!’” she laughs. “I don’t have balance; I have an extreme life – so it’s all about prioritising.” She has huge gratitude to Scott Bradlee for her success. PMJ is family to Aubrey. “We all have our own projects, but we have that bond to be able to lean on each other. “I’m always inspired by my peers’ talents. Each one of them, on every tour, has a superpower – there is no one that sounds like anyone else. “Ariana Savalus is my best friend, even though we’ve nothing in common. I learn from her and she’s so freakin’ funny. And Casey Abrams is a free spirit. I’m an organised-toa-fault Type A, but he’s taught me to enjoy music and my life.” Audrey loves to connect, meet and be with the audience – the only reason for performing live, she points out. “I’m really looking forward to being back on the stage, as there’s nothing like a PMJ audience – they dress up like us, and even better!”

“I just want to inspire and move people and connect emotionally; that’s what counts.” After being away from PMJ for two years, rocking it in jeans and leather jackets on her own solo album tours, Aubrey says, “I get to dress up!” “PMJ really encourages us to go all out – sequins, costume changes and colour co-ordinating trios. I’m ready to wear some fancy dresses again and go back to the glam!” Her voice is a genetic blessing, but Audrey says she still has to work at it. A natural at acting, she grew up in musical theatre. “I’m thankful of some of the boredom of being an only child. Being alone in my room with the door shut gave me the opportunity to practice and experiment with my voice, make weird sounds, listen to my parents’ CDs and try to emulate everyone I could.” The Seattle-born, L.A-based 31-year-old has a phenomenal knack for scat singing – that funky, nonsensical jazz improv. She doesn’t deny it; she says they travel a lot, so performing and talking with fans can be

What is your ‘invisible load’? Each of us carries with us a weight that silently drives the stress we feel. We may not realise it is there, just as others may not know the load we carry, which is why I call it your invisible load and it might be physical or emotional, or both. How much impact is the invisible load having on our health and our happiness? Physically, your invisible load is your body’s manifestation of the stress you feel. It’s likely your body’s invisible load in action (as long as diseases have been ruled out) when you suffer with symptoms such as exhaustion, weight gain, digestive complaints like bloating, uncomfortable periods or menopausal transitions, frequent headaches, or even sugar cravings and restless sleep. However, we aren’t always aware that stress has been kicking on in the background for years so we may not realise this is what it is. The invisible load on your emotions is somewhat harder to pinpoint because you will probably feel that it is just part of who you are – it’s been fused with your identity. Constructed from your life experiences and the beliefs you have created from these experiences, it filters across every thought you have, affecting how you react and respond to the situations in your life that you face on a daily basis. Essentially though, it has an incredible impact on how we feel about our body and our life as well as significantly affecting our overall health.
A common theme that seems to run through a lot of your books is the idea that the thoughts we feed ourselves are just as critical as the nutrition we feed ourselves. Why is this such an important theme for you to get across? We can’t control what happens in our day, but with awareness and practise, we can begin to catch a glimpse of how we’re thinking. This is the ribbon we need to grab hold of in order to unravel our stress once and for all. It’s catching these perceptions, thoughts and beliefs that will ultimately alter our biochemistry, transform our health and our experience of stress, as well as how we live. What are some of your favourite ways to feed your soul? I love to watch the patterns of nature, especially watching the sun rise or set or looking up at a sky full of stars. I’ve recently gotten back into tennis and playing this is another soul-nourishing activity for me. I also love to read and there isn’t much I find more nourishing than losing myself in someone else’s words. If there was one key message you could get out to the overwhelmed working mums out there, what would that message be? Prioritise your own nourishment and self-care. So often mums put themselves at the bottom of their own priority list, not realising that they’re actually doing a disservice to the people in their life they put ahead of their own needs. As the saying goes, we can’t fill from an empty cup. Everyone around you will benefit from you making time for your health and happiness. When we take good care of ourselves it has an immense ripple effect. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? After my spring tour around Australia and New Zealand which comes to the end in October, I will run my Essential Women’s Health Weekends, put the finishing touches on a new online course, and have some days not doing much. I can already feel the next book buzzing around in my head so I will likely start that soon too. And, in between those things, I will spend lots of time doing whatever feels right for me at the time. Anything from pottering in my garden and playing tennis to devouring some good books. www.drlibby.com.

Your latest book The Invisible Load has just come out. This is the book everyone needs to read! Why was this one so important for you to write? So many people tell me that they feel stressed or overwhelmed by their everyday lives. Not only does this mean that for too many people, life has become a pressure cooker with very little space for anything outside duty and responsibility that brings them joy – but knowing what I know about biochemistry, I understand the true impact that this is having on their bodies and their health. It is possible to live a busy and fulfilling life that doesn’t have you feeling up to the eyeballs in stress and I wanted to help people to experience this for themselves.

TAKING THE BULL By Clementine Page
Nineteen-year-old cow lover, rescuer and devotee Jasmine Hubber has always had an aďŹƒnity with the bovine species, owning three cows at the mere age of seven. Now she dedicates her days liberating calves and cows who are destined for the abattoir.

E
ven when I was little I was like ‘I’m going to have a place where cows never get eaten’.” And she does. That place is ‘Til the Cows Come Home’, a cow sanctuary on a 32-acre lifestyle block in the heart of the little North Canterbury town of Cust, where vegans are rare and cow sanctuaries are entirely unprecedented – until recently. For over two years this sanctuary has been a haven, an oasis where these rescued beings happily and healthily live out their days, basking in the sun and roaming the fields. All 108 – and counting! – of these beautiful beasts, all breeds and sizes, have been saved from their inevitable demise from farms all over the country – from Northland through to Oamaru. Jasmine is often contacted via her Facebook page, social media and other connections by people who have information about cows and calves that are due to go the abattoir and can be rescued. She is also contacted by a few local farmers when they have bobby calves available for rehoming. Each has its own name; Nellie, Templeton, Luna and Russell are just a handful of the happy herd. And although cows are Jasmine’s primary focus, she doesn’t just stop there; other animals feature regularly, with lambs and goat kids the latest additions to her backyard, alongside a newborn calf. So why cows? “I grew up and I saw exactly what happened to them, I saw that they didn’t mean anything to anyone except for the price tag that was on them,” Jasmine says. “They are so peaceful, they have amazing personalities and they just don’t get enough credit.”
Jasmine was born in Christchurch and raised in Springston until age eight before her family moved out to an 1100-acre plot in Amberley, where they ran a commercial beef and dairy grazing farm of around 900 cows. After moving to Cust four years ago, Jasmine began to take cows in one by one, and soon she had 10. The year 2017 saw the rescue haven really taking shape, particularly after popularity for the ‘Til the Cows Come Home’ Facebook page skyrocketed. Fast forward two years and Jasmine’s life is nothing short of busy! But not only is the sanctuary an ongoing 24hour commitment, there are substantial associated costs; grazing fees, vet bills and stockfeed costs, to name but a few. Winter is obviously the most expensive time of the year, and extra costs come in like blankets for the babies, milk powder
and bottles and extra feed. “Cows keep warm by eating and if they don’t have enough food, they can’t keep warm because their blood sits so close to their skin. A hungry cow is usually a cold one too. We feed out a lot during the winter so they can keep nice and warm.” The sanctuary’s bills are partly funded by Jasmine’s own income from her full-time job, and partly through donations and sponsoring acquired through her thriving Facebook page. When unexpected costs arise, such as vet bills and extra feed, Jasmine requests donations via Facebook or Give-A-Little – these kind contributions, however small, help to keep head above water. Regular and random donations vary from $1 to $50, but some extend into the thousands. “One time we got $6,500 from a vegan restaurant in Thailand, which was really cool!” Jasmine’s favourite thing about what she does is watching the cows grow into their own personalities. “They feel really comfortable and relaxed… they start to get really excited about things like food, and when we put them on the big grazing and it’s just hills and grass, they are so happy. Now they’ve filled out and they’re so fat!” she laughs. “That’s the best thing… knowing that once they’re here, that’s it, they don’t have to worry. It’s their last stop.” Jasmine offers sponsorship starting at $10 per week and sends the sponsors regular photos and updates of their chosen cow. Mind Matters: Stroke Awareness
The first part of the 2019 Alpine View Neurological Talk Series - in association with the Neurological Foundation. Alpine View is a new generation retirement village, with its own Wellness Programme (called TRILife) developed to enhance the lifestyle of residents through a focus on exercise, nutrition and state of mind. As part of this programme, they host TRILife Talks with expert speakers, to talk about the multiple aspects of Wellness. Alpine has been working with the Neurological Foundation to present further talks, focusing on different neurological conditions and research. The first presentation related to Stroke Recovery and Research. In the recent talk, Rich Easton, CEO of the Neurological Foundation, joined Alpine residents to introduce the guest speakers. They included Professor Maggie-Lee Huckabee, a world leader in communication disorders, and Emma Burnip, who is studying for her PhD at the University of Canterbury. Both are currently researching at the Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research - a state-of-the-art facility at St Georges Medical Centre in Christchurch. They are working to help individuals who have swallowing and communication disorders to recover function, or improve sufficiently to gain a better quality of life.
They were joined in the talk by Eric Knapp, with his own personal story of stroke recovery and rehabilitation. Eric was a strong, handsome, young firefighter, who woke up one morning unable to move or communicate. He had suffered a devastatingly severe stroke. Eric spoke of his life before and after the stroke – when he was unable to swallow and how he improved when referred to the Rose Centre for rehabilitation. His brave story of survival, hardship, and recovery was truly inspiring – and he is now employed at the centre as a Patient Consultant… while at the same time hoping his story will help other similar stroke recoverees on their difficult journey. Mind Matters: Stroke Awareness - was the first in the TRILife Neurological Talk Series at Alpine View. You should keep your eye out for guest speakers later in the year, as members of the public will be invited to attend.
Alpine View is dedicated to helping residents lead a life worth living, focusing on health and wellness.

HOLIDAY HEALTH ADVICE
F
or over 20 years, globetrotting Kiwis have turned to The Travel Doctor for
tailored medical travel advice, vaccinations, medication and more. Their experienced team offer the following top tips if you’re planning overseas travel:
Water Filtration/Purification
Contaminated water can spread a number of diseases and waterborne illnesses such as Cholera, Hepatitis A, Typhoid and most commonly vomiting and diarrhoea – not a great way to spend your holiday! Ensure your drinking water is clean by purifying with a reliable filtration system.
Vaccination
Immunisation can protect you from a wide variety of illnesses that are more common overseas. Before you leave, make sure all your New Zealand vaccines are up to date and seek advice from The Travel Doctor on what additional vaccines may be required for your trip. Important factors they will consider include your age, personal health, itinerary and whether you require proof of vaccination to cross any borders.
Blood Clots
Travel Medicine
Malaria, Dengue Fever and Zika Virus are just a few of the potentially life-threatening diseases transmitted by insects such as mosquitoes, ticks and more. You can protect yourself by using effective insect repellents, mosquito nets, clothing treatment etc. The Travel Doctor will give thorough advice on how to avoid getting bitten and what to do if this should happen.
Preparing a medicine and first aid kit to take with you will save the stress and expense of finding a trustworthy clinic to attend at short notice if you become unwell. Each kit is tailored to your individual requirements and The Travel Doctor will provide thorough advice and instructions for the use of your kit.
Long-haul flights can increase your risk of blood clots (such as Deep Vein Thrombosis) and certain people are more susceptible than others. Compression socks aid your blood flow and prevent leg swelling, making your flight more comfortable. Medical grade compression socks are recommended and do require a fitting.
Insect Protection

Spring
into action
From the daffodils that frame Hagley Park and the blossoms that line the Avenues, there really is nowhere quite like Christchurch in the Spring. And, as the Garden City comes into bloom, the local property market is looking full of life too! Despite winter’s reputation as a quiet time in real estate, the median house price in Christchurch was up in both June and July, compared to the corresponding period last year. The total volume of sales increased across that two-month period as well, with more than a thousand properties changing hands. These results seem to fly in the face of the narrative circulated by the media in recent weeks. But, it’s important to remember that most of the data used by industry commentators is based on national figures – and those figures are heavily influenced by the Auckland market. If you’re buying and/or selling in Christchurch, the only numbers which really matter are much closer to home. Given the current momentum of the local market, the coming months are shaping as the ideal time to sell your home. The onset of spring is always the catalyst for an increase in sales, with purchasers hustling to complete transactions before Christmas. New job prospects and schooling requirements for 2020 fuel this even further, while the warmer weather and the sunnier days mean homes just look, and feel, that much more appealing. If you’re thinking about buying or selling, or are just after some friendly advice, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch – the team here at Holmwood are ready to ‘spring into action’!

WORKPLACE FUTURE? OF THE
The use of co-working spaces is on the rise, but should you accept a job in a co-working space or move your employees into one? According to recruiting experts Hays, there are several pros and cons to consider before you embrace this new trend.
C
ommunal workspaces are not just for start-ups anymore,” Hays New Zealand’s Managing Director Adam Shapley says. “Big business is embracing the co-working phenomenon, but it’s not for everyone.” According to the latest Hays Journal, which explores this issue, co-working chains have grown rapidly. GCUC, a co-working conference company, and Emergent Research, a research and consulting firm, found that there were 11,790 co-working spaces globally in 2017, with 1.74 million members. They expect membership to rise to 5.1 million by 2022. It is thought that co-working will increase by 15% over the next five years – indeed, in Australia alone, the number of co-working spaces grew by a staggering 297 percent between 2013 and 2017 according to AllWork.Space. THE BENEFITS “The opportunity to network is a big attraction of co-working spaces,” Adam says. “Most co-working companies want to
foster a community and many use openplan desks, as well as hosting regular social events, wellness sessions, product launches and investor meetings. “The open layout of co-working spaces also leads to a more collaborative, personal and socially dynamic culture within an organisation. Just make sure you find out which other businesses are in the space before you sign up, and whether they align with your goals,” Adam advises. Another benefit is the opportunity to spot emerging business opportunities. According to the Hays Journal, professional services firm KPMG is one example of an organisation working alongside start-ups in co-working spaces to spot emerging trends and opportunities to support them earlier in their life cycle. Kirsty Mitchell, Director of Growth for KPMG in the UK, says, “By placing small KPMG teams into co-working spaces, we are part of a fast-paced ecosystem, working daily with businesses to help them as they grow, and to identify key issues and opportunities for them as they arise”.
She believes these environments could help KPMG project teams come up with new solutions to problems as well, rather than internal project rooms which, she suggests, can stifle creativity. THE DOWNSIDE “We are not all the same, and to be effective, a co-working space must therefore be able to adapt to the needs of individual tenants and their staff,” Adam warns. “This includes ensuring there are enough meeting rooms and private areas in which to meet clients or have private conversations. “If you don’t take the appropriate steps, the culture of the co-working company can become more dominant than the employer’s. Regular video conferences with your head office team and private offices within co-working spaces can help to minimise this risk.” A private office within a co-working space also addresses some of the other common drawbacks of co-working: overcrowding, noise, mess and lack of privacy. rench musical-theatre composer Claude-Michel Schӧnberg, of Les Misérables fame, came across a photo in a magazine of an 11-year-old Vietnamese girl about to board a plane from Vietnam’s Tân Sơn Nhất Air Base for the United States to join her American father, leaving her mother behind. Schönberg considered this mother’s actions for her child to be “The Ultimate Sacrifice”, an idea central to the plot of Miss Saigon.

“I was so appalled by the image of this deliberate ripping apart that I had to sit down and catch my breath,” Schӧnberg said. Based on Puccini’s Madame Butterfly but relocated and reset in war-torn Vietnam of the 1970s, Miss Saigon also draws parallels with the story of Fantine from Schӧnberg and Boublil’s Les Misérables, in that both Kim and Fantine sacrifice all for the sake of their children. Both are stories of passion and exploitation, which reflect the jarring reality of life during pivotal moments in history shaped by French nationalism and colonialism. As one theatre reviewer said: “these shows brim with images and scenes that incite reactions and provoke questions”. As with the 2009 Miss Saigon, Stephen Robertson is once again to direct and choreograph this year’s production and Richard Marrett returns as musical director. In Miss Saigon, Schӧnberg uses music to underline the conflict between the two distinct cultural worlds of Kim and Chris. Richard says this show is among his favourites to conduct. “Its score is wonderfully orchestrated and is at times soaring, passionate and epic, and at others delicate, intricate and beautiful.” Former New Zealand resident Tina Bergantinos-Panlilio, who has played the role of Kim in the Hamilton Musical Theatre and Dunedin Operatic productions of Miss Saigon, returns from the Philippines to reprise the lead role. Jack Fraser plays American GI Chris Scott; this will be his third role this year with Showbiz Christchurch, having had major parts in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and We Will Rock You. Jack has also performed twice in Les Misérables. Filipino/Australian countertenor
SHOWBIZ CHRISTCHURCH | DANIELLE COLVIN Marcus Rivera performs the role of The Engineer, a role he is very familiar with, having played it three times previously. Two performers from Showbiz’s 2009 production of Miss Saigon, Ena Azuma and Eric Wong, return to play in the ensemble of the 2019 production. The live orchestra features 19 expert musicians playing orchestrations of diverse musical styles. “There is a fusion of Western and Asian influences, as well as some saxophone-infused Broadwaystyle power ballads,” says Miss Saigon percussionist Craig Given. He and international ethnic percussion specialist Doug Brush will have an impressive setup of traditional and ethnic instruments, such as gongs, prayer bowls and a ‘damaru’ or Tibetan skull drum, which was
traditionally made from the cranium of two human skulls. Showbiz Christchurch had NZ Vietnam Veterans and NZ Vietnamese, who escaped before and after the fall of Saigon, share their stories with the Miss Saigon company and theatre patrons. With such meticulous and in-depth background work put into delivering the best audience experience, we have much to look forward to in this sensational production. Miss Saigon opens 27 September at the Isaac Theatre Royal. For bookings, freephone 0800 842 538 or visit www.ticketek.co.nz/showbiz. From a musician fronting one of the most successful New Zealand bands of the past two decades to a Kiwi fashion icon, Boh Runga is a creative force to be reckoned with. We catch up with Boh about her latest jewellery collection and getting an international nod from the Duchess of Sussex.
is given with love is special for both parties. I like the jewellery to carry positive messages. What do you love about what you get to do for a job? There’s quite a bit of freedom with what I do. I like the creative aspect of it and I like that I am not a slave to the regular, like travelling in peak hour traffic every day. But with a small business there’s a lot of responsibility (we’re a team of four now) so it isn’t all hearts and flowers. I’m lucky to have such a great business partner and such a great team around me. How much do you still get to dabble in your first love – music? Not enough in the last few years since taking over the jewellery brand but we have a pretty great studio at home as my partner is a musician and has good ears and technical abilities so he’s offered to record some tunes that have been rattling around for a bit. It’s also the stellar* Mix album’s 20th anniversary this year so I’ll definitely get to do some playing soon with the guys which will be very fun!
The Duchess of Sussex has been spotted wearing your 9CT Gold Discologo Studs gifted to her from the PM, Jacinda Ardern who is wearing your Egglet pendant in the upcoming British Vogue, which Meghan Markle herself guest-edited. How does it feel to get such a high-level international nod for your work? Our site www.bohrunga.com went mad!… all these people from all over the world were so curious to see what the Duchess had been given. We sold out in a couple of days in each metal choice. Every time she wears them we get another flurry online. The earrings have been featured in Harper’s Bazaar Australia, Harper’s Bazaar US and I did an interview for Japan Vogue which was very cool. I see the brand as a gifting brand first and foremost and having them given as a gift by our very own PM was very humbling. The Egglet represents new beginnings and since the focus of this particular Vogue issue is about positive change, I love it!
How does a day in the life of Boh Runga look these days? Monday is the only locked in day for me to be in the Boh Runga Bohtique in Ponsonby, Auckland, as most of the time I ‘work’ and ‘dream’ at home. That day is all about deadlines and scheduling new releases and additions, marketing and upcoming events, working out budgets for various things, brainstorming styling for photoshoots or planning trips to retailers etc with the team. You grew up down our way with your younger sisters Pearl and Bic, what do you love about Christchurch? Christchurch people are so resilient. They have been through some terrible times of late, devastating natural disaster and the most appalling act of hate but they’ve come together in a way that has made the whole country and even the world admire their heart and community spirit. It’s beautiful to see and I am proud of my hometown.
Do you have any favourite pieces you’ve designed or is that like picking a favourite child? I love all my children equally and without bias! The pieces I wear the most often, pretty much all the time, are the Karearea wing bracelet swapped out with the Miromiro feather bracelet. Earrings-wise I love the Huia earrings, they are large statement pieces that are my take on the Huia feather and they are a bit of departure from what I’ve done before. I like to wear the Gentlemen’s Club signet ring that has the motto Kind, Brave, True and the accompanying story with that collection is what I believe are the qualities of a good man.
Boh Runga Jewellery’s new collection ‘Shapes’ will be released September and is available in Christchurch from Silvermoon or visit www.bohrunga.com to find stockists throughout New Zealand. Head to Instagram and regram the Metropol cover, follow and tag @bohrungajewellery and @metropolmag to go in the draw to win a necklace from the new collection!
Where do you get your inspiration from? From the natural world, from living here with our amazing wildlife and environment. I also get inspiration from different cultural beliefs and ideas. And the love people hold for each other and how something that

After carving a pop career fronting your charttopping, multi award-winning band stellar*, you moved into jewellery design. Has that creative process always been something you’ve been attracted to? I love jewellery and accessories so when the opportunity came up, I definitely jumped at it. Designing jewellery is different from songwriting, obviously, but I approach each collection as if I’m writing a song or telling a story. I like to try and bring meaning to each design, something for the wearer to connect with as jewellery can be very personal.

Bobs and beehives We’re heading back to the 60s, when bigger was better! Yes, bobs and beehives have both been spotted on the runways this year and we’re excited to see what comes of it. Cherry blonde It’s the tastiest hair colour trend to hit 2019; cherry blonde is the new rose gold of hair colours and we’re welcoming it with open arms with the warmer months in store. It’s the modern incarnation of the classic strawberry blonde and sounds just as delicious!

The blow-dry is back The blow-dry – that had once blown right on by – has hit the style consciousness again. Where we have previously seen undone, messier hair, we’re now craving a sleeker, smoother, more polished look and, whether that look is wavy, curly or straight, the blow-dry can get us there.

Types of Hernias The abdominal wall plays a critical role in in our bodies, creating the boundary lines of the abdominal cavity and holding everything together. So, when it is compromised by a combination of muscle weakness and strain, it can lead to problems.
“A
hernia is the protrusion of the abdominal contents through the abdominal wall,” hernia specialist Mr Ross Roberts from The Hernia Clinic explains. “They can arise spontaneously or following previous abdominal surgery. “While a hernia will usually exhibit as a lump in the groin, sometimes it is not noticeable and will only be picked up in a routine examination.” Risk factors for hernias include obesity, pregnancy, muscle weakness or previous
abdominal surgery. “There are several types of hernias that can occur – for instance, diaphragmatic hernias can include congenital hernias (present at birth due to failure of diaphragm to develop), or hernias which are acquired due to wear and tear, for example the hiatus hernia, when the stomach bulges up into the chest through the diaphragm, causing reflux.” The most common hernias are inguinal or groin hernias, which are most often seen in men. Femoral hernias are more common in women and
happen when a weakness develops adjacent to the major vein draining the leg, with protrusion into the upper thigh. Umbilical hernias occur through a weakness in the belly button, while incisional hernias result from a weakness in a previous abdominal scar. “These are more common after major abdominal surgery, particularly where there have been wound complications, or an infection which has prevented proper wound healing and results in long-term weakness,” Ross explains.
Hernias of any type can be dangerous, with the risk resulting from the possibility of them getting trapped and twisted in the weak spot in the abdominal wall. This is known as a strangulated hernia. If the intestinal loop gets damaged, its contents can leak out, leading to gangrene and peritonitis. Although most hernias aren’t immediately life-threatening, they don’t go away on their own and require surgery to prevent potentially dangerous complications. Importantly, repair is relatively easy and straightforward in most cases. “Most of these hernia types can now be repaired with keyhole surgery, however, small hernias, such as umbilical hernias, are still often best repaired using open surgery through small incisions. “The only effective treatment for adults is surgical repair and, when the hernia is suspected, it’s advisable to discuss treatment with one’s healthcare professional.” Contact The Hernia Clinic on 03 961 6666 or email info@ herniaclinic.co.nz.

Retirement Ready By Céline Gibson
If you ask a retired person for advice on how to have a good retirement, more often than not they’ll recommend you start planning well ahead to ensure a happy and stress-free retirement.
S
o, keeping that word ‘plan’ in mind, the simplest place to start your research on retirement is online. Punch ‘planning for retirement’ into your search engine and reach for your reading specs, because there are a number of extremely helpful sites dedicated to guiding you through the process. Early midlife (35 to 50) brings many financial strains, but it’s crucial to continue saving as much as possible. The combination of earning more plus utilising this time to invest and earn interest makes these years the best for saving. Later midlife (50 to 65)
generally sees financial constraints, such as mortgages, student loans, credit-card debts etc., being paid off, leaving people with more disposable income for investment. While there is no official retirement age in New Zealand, many people aim to retire when they are 65 years old, which is when the New Zealand Superannuation starts to pay out and, with people now living longer – on average 80 percent of 65-year-old men can expect to live to 90, and 65-year-old women to 94 – there’s every reason to look ahead early and make sure you are retirement ready so you can live comfortably for longer.
Below is a summary to help you start your plan. • Estimate how many years you’ll be in retirement and think about the lifestyle you want. • Your budget – one of the best tools for managing money, whatever your age. There are free budgeting booklets available online. • Where to live:

Opting to stay in your own home: - Modify your house with ramps and rails and get homehelp - but take into consideration the costs involved. - Take on a boarder – gives added financial security, as well as companionship. - Downsize to a smaller home – preferably close to shopping precinct and medical facilities, but remember that should you opt to move house, take into account the costs of moving – legal and real estate fees, plus the move itself. Opting to live in a retirement village: - Differs from buying a house in that the financial arrangements are more complex and villages vary in their accommodation and facilities, services, support and care, legal and financial structures, philosophy and management. - Retirement Vvillage living offers security and provides social interaction on a daily basis; they’re maintained by the village operator and should any problem arise, there is someone to call for assistance; many villages have in-house care facilities, assuring peace of mind and an easy move, should that day come. Life insurance and disability insurance: - Don’t neglect these because you want to know that family can survive financially without pulling from retirement savings should something happen to you. - Make an appointment with your lawyer to draw up your will. It’s not surprising, after all, everything you would expect from a great cocktail bar and restaurant is here. The resident mixologist has an encyclopaedic knowledge of cocktails, as well as creating his own delicious concoctions. Happy Hour is 4pm-6pm every day while between 9pm-10pm during Ivory Hour, you’ll find cocktail and spirit specials. On the menu there is something to suit all tastes
from tapas and shared platters to burgers and chips, blueberry cured salmon or the signature Ivory Chicken with its secret herbs and spices. Friday evenings feature talented local musicians; monthly on a Sunday afternoon is the time for jazz. Coming up on 31 August, James Daniels and Sue White from The Breeze will host a retro 80s Neon Night; a fantastic opportunity for a party and to dance “like no-one’s watching”. The combination of glitz and glamour with a casual modern vibe gives Ivory Bar universal appeal. The best interests of the sheep, the land and people lie at the heart of this business. The sheep are raised on pasture in a
biological farming system. Their milk is smooth and creamy, has superior nutritional qualities to cow and goat milk and is highly digestible. It offers a unique and delicious food choice for the many people who struggle to consume cow’s milk products. It is highly versatile for use in a range of delicious products. The farming system has a strong ethical base; with a low environmental footprint, lambs are reared by their mothers for at least 35 days before they are weaned, and no sheep are tail docked. The sheep are quiet and friendly. Products are available at the Riccarton House Farmers’ Market, at Piko Foods, Fresh Choice in Merivale, Harbour Coop in Lyttelton and in the soon to open Riverside Market in the centre of the city. This spring, an expanded range of gelato will be available. Live outside Christchurch? Delivery can be arranged throughout New Zealand. constructed for Royal New Zealand SPCA. The new wing of the SPCA was designed for the quarantine of dogs and cats that have been mistreated and need desperate or critical care. In the complex, there are 48 separate dog rooms, each with an external and internal area and 12 cat condos. Each animal has room to recover where they can get a chance to feel safe and become accustomed to tender loving carers. They are kept cosy during the cooler winter months with heaters in each room and cool during the hotter months. The entire building is maintained at moderate to warm temperature with HVAC systems to ensure comfort to the animals and staff alike. There are veterinary and operating rooms to treat animals as soon as they come in, storage rooms for medicines and food as well as areas to wash and clean dogs. A HOME WITH
HYGGE By Rhonda Mitchell
If the Danish term ‘hygge’ is defined as a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or wellbeing, this Gold Award-winning home built by Fleetwood Construction has it, well, in bucketloads.
T
he home – a happy collaboration between the homeowners, Matt Gutsell of Sheppard and Rout Architects, and Fleetwood Construction – is the fourth Gold Award win in the Master Builders House of the Year competitions for Directors Sam and Charlotte Fleetwood, and is amongst the top 100 in New Zealand to get a Gold Reserve Award, putting it in the national finals for the competition later this year.
While it helps that one of the owners hails from Denmark, this home’s innate hygge is a reflection of the couple’s passion for the home and their detailed design choices, which included bringing light fittings back from Denmark. Feelings of home, comfort and welcome are encapsulated in the setting, exterior, and interior of the Governors Bay split-level design. With the house as the stage, the view
down Lyttelton Harbour to the heads leads a starry cast of features. “Matt did an amazing job of designing the home and maximising the view,” Sam says. A stunning slender veranda acting as both viewing platform and outdoor hallway is fitted with attractive vertical metal privacy panels on rollers. “They look like a design feature but are actually practical for shade and wind protection,” Sam says.

The custom-made floating staircase leads you to the entrance of the home and in to the combined kitchen living area which reveals the amazing view. The chic kitchen shows great attention to detail and is a perfect design fit for the style of the home. “The island bench in matte black with a slim stainless steel bench top and modular detailing really draws you in, the hygge is here,” Sam says. Sleek floor to ceiling sliding doors frame the living rooms’ view and again in the master bedroom, “you just don’t want to leave”. Sam says skilled hill-builders Fleetwood Construction loves building architectural homes. “The team loves the attention to detail and craftmanship required.” With Sam onsite every day overseeing the details, any challenges run smoothly and it gives clients confidence and the great service they deserve. “This home had eight different types of foundations and retaining walls, a 22-metre long steel frame and a 4.6-metre precast concrete panel, which all had to be fitted with precision. The access to the site made this challenging but the team totally nailed it. It was great to have this hard work and craftmanship recognised at the awards.” With plenty of architectural masterpieces in the pipeline, Fleetwood Construction is looking forward to next year’s competition. “We work hard everyday to create Christchurch’s most personalised building experience.”

What are your top tips for picking accessories for the home? When choosing your accessories, they could be favourite pieces handed down through the family, or a new piece that you like for some reason or another. Everyone is different, so personal needs are different when dressing your home. We live in a very disposable world these days. When you choose something, it is best to love it. Buy things you will treasure, look after and even enjoy for many years. What accessories are worth investing in, rather than those with a lower price point? This really depends upon your priorities and budget. Some people love to collect objects, paintings, coins, bottles, pots etc. These can all be used in clever ways, displayed for decorating your home. For example, choose a vase that you love that is beautiful on its own – this way it may not need dressing, or if it does, try a small amount of greenery from the garden or a tea candle, rather than expensive flowers. I believe you can cleverly put together items from high and low price points and make them work together. Art is a great way to add colour and interest to a room, how do you make sure the accessories complement and not detract from the art? Art again is a very personal taste; for some people, the more colour the better, while others prefer a more neutral palette. I believe anything in wall/sculptural art goes. You can put a new frame on a classic old water painting and it will look fabulous in a new home. Be clever, think outside the square and do what is right in your heart and home. Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd
Serious decorating punch When it comes to the home, accessories have the power to make or break your space. We sought the inside scoop from awardwinning interior designer Angelique Armstrong from Armstrong Interiors about how to use accessories to pack some serious decorating punch.
The trend of odd numbers of items together is very popular in interiors and even floristry, does this apply to accessories? Unless we are specifically working on a symmetrical look, this definitely applies, because for some reason it is more pleasing to the eye. One, three and five are good numbers to work with, and different sizes create different levels and shadows, which is interesting.

The A-team that created this St Andrews Hill home love it when a plan comes together and the judges of the Master Builders House of the Year are in full agreement. The house has received not only a Gold Award in the ‘New Home $1.5-2 million’ category, but best home in the category also.

Future-proofed
T
he house has been futureproofed to ensure the owners never have to move on. “Often people need to come off the hill as they age, but we never want to, so we have future-proofed by maximising access throughout.” On the lower level, a large bedroom has a sleek but practical bathroom ensuite. “All the bathrooms are designed with absolutely level floors, space to move and wide access to
showers and toilets,” Jim says. Across the hall is the lift, which is located in the triple garage; compact yet easily holding a wheelchair, it provides access to the upper level. The owners requested a show-stopping entry way and the floating staircase in solid American Blonde Oak, backlit by LED, fulfils this brief in spades. Hinting with their intrinsic beauty at the delights ahead, the stairs invite you up to a world of light and space. The cantilevered upstairs
living is oriented as a platform to take in the stunning view. The truly panoramic view takes in 270 degrees, from the Kaikoura Ranges to Mount Hutt, across the estuary and the city. The owners say they “live around our kitchen”, and why wouldn’t you when it is oriented to the breathtaking view? Any cook could not help but be creative given the outlook for inspiration, working at the generous island bench with a large breakfast bar attached. The generous pantry behind holds a

second sink and fridge, while a gallery of high windows runs the length of the house, capturing the sunrise. They can also be opened electronically to provide ventilation. With an eye to future grandchildren, a study/TV space can be closed off, and with a nod to the past, the dining table is fashioned from beams of the original 1938 home. A to-die-for and absolutely private west-facing balcony is accessed through glass doors, which can be slid right back
so that the balcony becomes intrinsic to the living envelope. The balcony can also be closed off to poor weather or for security by steel louvres, which can also be tilted for shade. The owners love this feature which “gives the front of the house a unique design”. Jim’s favourite two features are the skillion roof which has been masterfully clad internally with cedar. It creates a harmonious flow from the exterior soffits, across the interior ceilings and then out
to the opposing exterior soffit. “It brings such warmth to the house.” “It also changes character at night,” say the owners, “when different wood tones come out, and it varies again depending on the lighting used”. The other striking feature is the main entrance way, a true floating stairwell. This is a feat of engineering, architecture and most importantly, a bloody good builder, all collaborating to create this “spectacular piece,” Jim says.

Flair for design
T
he owners’ flair for design is nowhere more apparent than in the master bedroom walk-in-wardrobe, where a corner carousel for shoe
display and storage really should be trademarked, and there is a clever fold-out ironing board for sprucing up clothes in situ. Under the heading of ‘how could you ever live without it’, a knee-height footrest is built into the shower.
A balcony runs the length of the upstairs bedrooms, with a secret door at the end which leads to the spa and sauna courtyard, in turn opening to the raised vegetable garden beds, and alcoves built into the house for a garden
sculpture. The dream of a forever house has been realised and when they sit in their cantilevered living room, looking at a view you could never get tired of, the owners feel as if they are “on holiday”.

ARCHITECTURAL FORUM ATTRACTS POSITIVE RESPONSE
H
Allfrey + South Architects’ initiative ArchiChat is resonating strongly with people who share their passion for design and the architectural process. As Architect Craig South reports, the latest two-way forum sparked constructive discussion on how people like to live and holiday.
aving launched our ArchiChat Group earlier this year, it is exciting to see interest growing in this interactive social forum that we set up for people wanting to learn more about architecture
and what architects do. As well as giving people an opportunity to explore the practice of contemporary architecture, the forum is providing an invaluable vehicle for an informal exchange of

thoughts and ideas. It has been a great experience and we’re certainly learning a lot from those taking part. Our latest series, in early August, was well-attended and generated great feedback.
We got the ball rolling at each session by asking people to name their favourite holiday locations. It was interesting how these places so often lined up with a passion, whether for tramping or biking, peace

and quiet, or just wanting to be somewhere beautiful with family. Discussion then turned to what sort of bach people dreamed of and how that might complement their home lifestyle. Some preferred the concept of combining a modest city home with a large bach where they could holiday in style and comfort with friends and family. Others clearly favoured a spacious city home for urban living complemented by the option of being able to escape to a small private bach. We talked through how each option could look in architectural terms, drawing examples from our own practice. We first outlined how a large holiday house can be designed to accommodate multiple families with all the comforts of home and how this could be combined with compact living in an inner city apartment. Many felt this combination would work best if the holiday home location was not too far from the city, making it easy to invite friends and family out for a weekend away. Secondly, we showed how a large city home can be designed to maximise easy living for children and adults, as well as catering to extended family/guests. We
discussed how this could be complemented by a small bach designed to make best use of space by delivering flexibility, privacy, style and comfort. A lot of people thought a small, low maintenance bach would be perfect for a more distant getaway. We also touched on how you could combine a small city home with a small bach and designing for one-off crowds in small spaces. Smaller buildings do offer that advantage of less maintenance. Personal preferences will always influence how people live and play, though most attending our sessions agreed that a bach should look and feel different to day-today living so as to create that true sense of escape. In these latest ArchiChat sessions, there was also lively debate on the Merivale Mall expansion and whether people favoured suburban development over growth in the central city. The consensus favoured a vibrant city centre. Needless to say, we are looking forward to another successful round of ArchiChat later this year and having more people join our conversation on architecture. www.allso.co.nz

RENOVATING WITH
INNOVATION “It’s the variety of the work that gives us so much satisfaction,” according to Ron and Adrian Bradley of Innovate Renovate, the renovation management specialists. “Not only that, but we often encounter some rather head-scratching problems that require innovative solutions.
O
ver the years we have been involved in this work, we have been presented with all kinds of situations and developed tools for dealing with them that we can then bring to each new but similar instance.” The team’s problem-solving capabilities have definitely been tested recently. In Governors Bay, a client wanted a veranda canopy over his extensive deck that was strong enough for him to stand on to do
maintenance work on his house. It also needed to withstand the strong southerly winds that can sweep through the area. “We created our own purpose-design, adapting off the shelf material but strengthening it with rolled steel. The end result is a 3.5-metre semi-enclosed room which can be used all year round and which is sheltered from the elements – a really great asset.” Another little conundrum Ron and Adrian
have been asked to address involved how to replace a fully enclosed shower on the first floor of a house. “There was simply no possibility of being able to get a readymade fibreglass unit up the stairs, so once again we had to develop our own design from a 3-sided shower and enclose it in situ.” To take advantage of this solutionfocused team for your renovation, phone 03 351 7039 and speak with Ron or Adrian.

Luxe Linen By Melinda Collins
Tough and durable yet soft to the touch, linen is a textile oxymoron and, despite being one of the oldest fabrics in the world, it’s making a stylish statement in the home as we look to the warmer weather that is just around the seasonal corner.
W
hen it comes to upholstery and sheets, linen is a firm favourite, with its durability lending itself well to the family environment. Resisting wear from abrasion as well as dirt and stains, this tempting textile even stands its own against pills and stretching. So, it’s not surprising that its use is spreading across an even greater range of homewares than ever before, with draperies, tablecloths, bedspreads, curtains, drapes and even rugs
looking luxurious in linen. Known rather romantically by the ancient Romans as textus ventilus, or ‘woven wind’, texture is linen’s main allure. Soft and cool, it’s a great summertime addition to the bedroom and it becomes softer after use. Linen is, by its very nature (pun intended), a sustainable product – with flax plants requiring very little irrigation, pest control and processing energy. Inherently antimicrobial, linen is even resistant to mildew. What’s not to love?

The beautiful white weatherboard exterior with original interiors of kauri tongue and groove floors, walls and ceilings invokes a sense of history and timeless style. Originally the town’s General Store built in 1914, it now encompasses a wholefood café on the ground floor and Dalethorpe House on level one, filled with a beautiful selection of carefully curated items. At the heart of Dalethorpe House is the Ferguson family and their long history at ‘Dalethorpe’ – one of Canterbury’s oldest sheep stations. “At our core is an understanding of a life lived well and a pride in our product.”

In 2019 we’re crushing on the lush fabric of velvet: this versatile fabric induces sumptuousness, warmth and elegance, and lends itself well to both minimalist and maximalist interiors. So how do we incorporate this beloved fabric into our home?

simplistic style sofa in a rich colour is that luxury lounging staple you’ve been looking for, while an upholstered headboard in jewel-toned velvet will add a touch of sophistication to any boudoir. If in doubt, start with a plethora of small accents like lampshades, stools and plush cushions and throws. Consider mixing and matching for contrast; other textural fabrics like wool and linen work well, or opt for a softer colour palette of greys, dusky pinks and duck egg blues. Plush pieces in glorious stand-out colours like emerald green, mustard and peach make for statement additions to more minimalist living spaces, but maximalism is in – so don’t be afraid to go all out!

pple Car Play should be a standard in all vehicles now and the Focus’ sound is brilliant; I connected in less than eight seconds. Avon City Ford’s Hemi Peek gave me the rundown as always, but it really was me playing around in the car that made it fun. I ask friends what they think. Charlotte didn’t like the passenger seat flooring but loved the big mirror on the visor; I guess that’s a woman’s prerogative. My son Tom loved the panoramic sunroof as did I. It was a good solid drive at 134kW, and 240Nm made it agile and fast off the mark, plus there was plenty of room inside for real estate gear and family materials. It has pretty good lines too and tinted glass gave it a sexy look. The heads-up display (HUD) felt like a nice addition but the price was a great one at $41,990 plus ORC. The one thing I loved was economy. You don’t really notice it when you’re driving around, but I took a couple of friends up to play in the snow at Porters Pass and it hardly made a dent in the petrol. Add the fact that despite a boot full of food and sleds we were still all comfortable and it just goes to show what a great little runner it is. So, overall impression of the Ford Focus? A bloody good car.

motoring Is it possible to make one of the best small hatches better? Honda thinks so. Just check out the new Jazz. Visually we see a more pronounced nose and restyled LED headlights, but it still retains the iconic eggshell styling.
T
A GREAT PACKAGE OF VERSATILITY AND DRIVING ENJOYMENT THAN ANY OTHER IN ITS CLASS
he entry-level S comes in a 1.3 i-VTEC four pot with 73kW and 119Nm of torque, while my test car, the RS, gets the beefier 1.5-litre version (97kW/156Nm). Buyers can choose between a sixspeed manual or CVT auto transmission. The manual is delightful, though I expect most Jazz buyers to gravitate to the CVT. Interior space is peerless, with head and legroom sure to accommodate all shapes and sizes, though the a-pillars can be slightly intrusive. It’s the interior itself where the Jazz comes into its own. Features like Honda’s
new 7-inch Bluetooth display, Emergency Stop Assist, Parking Sensors, Reversing Camera and Hill Start Assist are just some of the kit which now comes as standard throughout the range. On the move, the 1.5-litre is a peppy unit and the chassis is well balanced, offering a degree of fun chuck-ability usually reserved for hot hatchbacks. In a nutshell, the Honda Jazz stands as a great package of versatility, driving enjoyment and more standard kit than any other in its class. Plus, with prices starting at a snip over $21,990, you can throw value in there too.

In its modern workshop, Leading Edge Automotive’s specialist technicians carry out the full range of servicing, repairs and problem diagnoses – everything from issuing warrants of fitness, replacing parts and repairing defective shocks, suspension or brakes, to diagnosing auto electrical faults, replacing tyres, wheel alignments and so much more, using the latest equipment. They are Autosure warranty approved repairers and sell policies for peace-of-mind motoring. “Today’s vehicles are marvels of electronics and engineering.
