“A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking because her trust is not in the branch, but in her own wings. Always believe in yourself.” - Anonymous I’m a fixer upperer. I’m not sure where this desire for improving things stems from, but I seem to get a greater satisfaction from renovating something existing, than from building from scratch. Whether it’s a house or a life problem, I love nothing more than getting stuck into a project. So with my latest project being my health, I’m a little hindered by my lack of a medical degree; which is why Dr Libby Weaver is my new best friend. In our 29 August issue of Metropol, Dr Libby talked about her latest book – The Invisible Load. A guide to overcoming stress and overwhelm, it covers the mental side of stress; how much of what we perceive as stress (such as that overflowing email inbox!), isn’t actually stressful (unless it really is life-threatening) and that the inner turmoil that we experience as a result of letting these things get to you is ABC oneAUDITED of the greatest health crises facing the modern woman. I don’t do life by halves; something my three kids, three dogs and the full time job that I passionately live and breathe, will attest to. I love every single one of these areas of my life, but it is a lot of love to juggle. I’ve now got my hands on aAUDITED copy of The Invisible Load, so it is perhaps ironic that the only problem I now have left to solve is how to find the time to start reading it.

Designed for all fitness levels, the soft-under-foot marathon starts and finishes at Bottle Lake Forest, and comprises four popular distances – the Full Marathon (42.2km); the Half Marathon (21.1km); the 10km run; and the “fun for everyone” 5km run. John encourages people to give it a go. “We’re becoming too sedentary, so we need to find ways to keep more active but enjoy it at the same time.” The 4 Paws Marathon has garnered much attention, with more than 145 entrants already registered from here and overseas, to date. The trilogy started with The Tiger Catcher, you’ve just released A Beggar’s Kingdom and you’re releasing the third – Inexpressible Island – later this year. How intense has this been for you? I thought it was a great idea when my publishers first suggested it, and I still think it’s a great idea for my readers, not to have to wait some inordinately long time to read the next book and the next. And clearly I’m hoping that when my readers finish A Beggar’s Kingdom, they will not want to do or read anything else until Inexpressible Island is finally in their hands – because I certainly didn’t! But for me, to revise, copy-edit, proofread, do the illustrations, go on tour, and promote all three books in quick succession, is both exhausting and exhilarating. I love getting the feedback on one book while I’m working on the third and promoting the second. It’s a heady combination of overwhelmed and deeply satisfied. How long did they take to write? Five long, tortuous years. I’m still writing them. Still changing words, adding sentences, thoughts, jokes, as the publishers are prying the books from my clutching hands so they can go to print on the final book in the saga, Inexpressible Island. When it comes to writing, how strict do you have to be? Do you write full time or just when the inspiration hits?
I have to be strict, and I have to write full time. Sometimes I’m not, and I don’t. But when I’m working on a book, I force myself to stay alone in my office for about twelve hours every day, and hope that I can squeeze out a few lines, a page, a poem, a thought, a character, a story. Sometimes there is a trickle, sometimes there is a flood. Sometimes I feel pleased, and sometimes I feel raging self-doubt. If I wrote only when inspiration hit, I would probably never write at all. The inspiration comes from the daily grind of the work, not the other way around. How connected to characters and a storyline do you get during the writing phase… is it sad to finish a character’s storyline after being so invested for so long? When I was writing The Bronze Horseman books and for a long time after, I would dream of Tatiana and Alexander as if they were real people. Same thing with Julian and Josephine. I feel not just connected to my characters when I work, I am completely immersed in their struggles and stories. They live in me in technicolor and much of my actual life fades to black and white. It is sad to finish, it is very difficult to let them go, but once I do, the colour gradually returns to the rest of my life. And afterward, the characters from my books live alongside me as real people with real lives. I often think about where they are and what they’re doing. Where do you get your inspiration from? I get my inspiration from people who say hello to me, women who travel with me, my sister who breaks up with her boyfriend in the middle of the Stanley Cup Final, Olympic ice skaters, Ivy League colleges, my homeland, the prairies of America, Truman Capote, John Steinbeck, and my friend Penny who said to me when I told her I was writing my first book Tully, “Paullina, please, whatever you do, don’t write the parts that I don’t want to read”. Oh, and I also get my inspiration from How to Train Your Dragon 2, the movie. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? There is a trip to the Grand Canyon, a cruise to Cozymel, a writer’s festival in Dubai, a research trip to Utah, and then four planned books that need to be written and finished before the year is out.

Can you tell us about the End of Forever saga and what these books mean to you? They mean the last five years of my life. Literally. It sounds like a lot of time, and it is, but bear in mind that my books tend to be long and I usually spend about two years on each. So for three books, I’ve come out about a year ahead. This trilogy represents all of my hopes and dreams for my work for those five years. Every writer on every book worries they are wasting their time; that the story will never work; that readers won’t care. So I had all those concerns times three. But if it didn’t work, I wasn’t risking just a year or two. They represented a significant portion of my lifetime of work. In addition, this is the first time since The Bronze Horseman that I’ve written this kind of sprawling epic love story. End of Forever is everything I’ve thought and felt about love and life and fate and grief in the intervening twenty years.

Performing under pressure By Melinda Collins
Ever wondered how the world’s top sportspeople deal with pressure? Dr Ceri Evans has seen the impact of pressure across the spectrum.
I
n his new book Perform Under Pressure, the consultant psychiatrist outlines his strategies for dealing with stress to get you performing at your best – whether on the sportsfield
or in the boardroom. We caught up with Dr Ceri Evans about the state of play when it comes to the mine field that is performing under pressure.

Does performing under pressure look the same in the boardroom as it does on the field? Although performance in different domains obviously looks very different in terms of the external world and circumstances, our internal workings are just the same. This makes sense: there is no ‘sports lobe’ in the brain; athletes don’t pop in a different brain for performances; and no matter how we perform in our selected field, we also all succumb to a sense of overload and overwhelm in our everyday lives – I name these ‘red moments’. So external pressure in the boardoom, on the field, in the classroom, in the clinic or at home, all lead to common, predictable internal reactions and therefore familiar behaviours. Although there will be obvious differences in intensity, the patterns will be the same. Your Red-Blue mind model is renowned for its ability to help people serious about performing under pressure. Can you give us a rundown of the model and how it works? I developed the Red-Blue mind-model with Renzie Hanham - a well-known local graphic artist, martial arts instructor and mental skills practitioner, who has a brilliant way of cutting through the complexity to give us the simplicity we need in those tricky moments over the last 25 years. For performance purposes, our mind can be
seen as having two systems that interact with other. The Red system is primed for survival, keeps us safe, and runs on images and feelings. It is very fast but is based on quick impressions. The Blue system is primed for potential, allows us to learn and adapt, and runs on logic, words and numbers. It is slow and takes effort, but provides detailed analysis. The Red ‘feeling’ system can dominate and compromise the Blue ‘thinking’ system when we are under threat. The Blue system, in return, can reframe situations and calm Red reactions to some extent. We want Red and Blue to be in the right balance for the situation. Red is not bad and Blue is not good – we need the energy of Red and the clarity of Blue – so we are at our best when the two are balanced and we are ‘in the purple’. Without giving away all your secrets… what are your key strategies when it comes to getting people performing at their very best? The basic approach is to help people ‘see’ their immediate Red/Blue states of mind, understand them and make more conscious, effective choices about their responses. First, we can’t change what we can’t see. You might be surprised by how unaware most people are of how much they are affected by pressure – even at moderate levels – and how this holds them back. The first step is to gain emotional control. Second, it helps to have a clear picture of the overview so that we make informed decisions, not reckless ones arising from tension and tunnel vision, so that we have clarity. Rather than one-sided positive or negative thinking approaches, we want clear thinking under pressure. Third, rather than waiting for something to happen so that we fall into the procrastination trap, we want to take effective action. Instead of avoiding tough moments and having as little discomfort as possible in our lives, we can see tough moments as the very conditions we need to put our Red-Blue pressure skills into practice. By providing people with a method to hold their nerve, find their way and make their mark, it encourages people to not only tolerate tough situations, but to ‘walk towards the pressure’. www.drcerievans.nz

How does performing under pressure look? Although you probably intend this to mean successful performance, there are two sides to performance under pressure. On the one hand, as a personal experience, it is when we are completely ‘at one’ with our immediate environment, when we feel calm, clear and act with precision. Looking on, we see performers who seem to have time, make good decisions, and are accurate. On the other hand, when we get a sense of overload and overwhelm and we feel the weight of pressure come down on us, we lose our nerve, lose our way and lose our touch. Looking on, we see people become hesitant, impulsive, stuck, and lose their ability to perform the basics, let alone perform with timing. It’s a two way street, it’s unpredictable, and therefore it draws us in.
Introducing Minji Park Minji has recently joined the award-winning team at House of Travel Christchurch City, let’s find out more about her….. How did you start in travel? I studied tourism management and I always wanted to travel around the world. After university, I went to Canada on a working holiday. I came across the tour company G Adventures; and they asked me to join their team as a tour conductor in Japan and South East Asia. This was my first step into travel, and I have loved it ever since.
Why did you want to join the House of Travel Christchurch City team? House of Travel Christchurch City is an award-winning office in New Zealand which instantly made me want to join this team. We don’t just book leisure travel, but we have corporate consultants, as well as the HOT Events team who book travel for groups, conference and incentives. I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to learn a different aspect of the industry as no two days are the same. Furthermore, we are home to New Zealand Olympic Travel which is very exciting! The Olympic Games are the world’s biggest event and I feel honoured to be part of it.
What have you found out about the team? Everyone in the office is very friendly and hard working. I’ve never felt as welcomed in a new role as I have here. We are all passionate about what we do, sometimes we don’t talk at all for hours to concentrate on work, however we always have a couple of laughs throughout the day. I joined the team only a couple of months ago and I do feel we are a great united and supportive team. Where is your favourite place to travel? It is a tough question. My favourite place for a food trip is Japan and for scenery and culture is Spain and Croatia if I have to choose!

In 2014 you were artist-in-residence at your former school Rangi Ruru. Teaching young women to grow their performance confidence must have been a wonderful experience? I really enjoy working with young people – encouraging them to explore and delight in the total abandonment that comes through singing, movement and storytelling. We live in a society so caught up in what we do, what we look like, and worrying what others think. I want to impart that we’re all unique; there’s no-one else like us. I want our young people to embrace and celebrate that. You won the Actress of the Year Award at the United Solo Festival 2014 in New York, and at the same festival, in 2019, won the Best One Woman Show Award for your Songs for Nobodies – how did that feel? The Arts is not the easiest of career paths, so it’s wonderful to be recognised for the risks you take, on and off the stage. Any favourite roles? I’ve loved so many. Eliza Doolittle and Maria Von Trapp were a delight, while Mrs Johnston in Blood Brothers was a dream role. Songs for Nobodies was like a personal coming of age… celebrating being old enough to draw from a wealth of life’s highs and lows to play the often tortured ‘nobodies’ and ‘somebodies.’ Is there a “baddie” woman you’d relish bringing to life on stage or screen? I’ve been watching A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix. The lead baddie is Count Olaf, but I’d love to play that role as a woman, taking on the many disguises and accents. Mean, convincing, greedy… my boys would be so impressed!
You’re currently touring your solo show, A Doris Day Special, around New Zealand. What do you love about Doris Day? Doris sang and danced with total joy and abandonment. Her life was often difficult, but it never defined her as a person. She retired early to commit her life to saving neglected animals. She was optimistic, kind and genuine – all qualities I greatly admire. Which world-renowned venue would you love to perform in, if you could? I saw Audra Macdonald singing with the San Francisco Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall last year. Fabulous! I kept looking at the elite New Yorkers’ in their box seats and imagined walking out onto that stage to take my place in front of that orchestra… pure joy! Tell us about the importance of yoga in your life? I realise more and more the importance of yoga not only in my life but for those around me. To take time out for yourself, to connect deep within, to listen and trust your intuition, cultivate self-love and, most importantly, breathe fully and deeply. When we align these things, it’s amazing how they impact so positively on so many other areas in our lives. Recently I did my yoga teacher training in Thailand. It was a life-changing experience, and now I’m so fortunate to be balancing my life, teaching and sharing my passion for yoga, meditation and singing, as well as at home with my singing and acting students. When not performing, MCing, producing, writing, teaching or doing yoga, what do you do for time out? I have busy young boys and a daughter at uni, so time out is rather scarce, yet when I really think on it, the things I choose to do in my life are time out, because they’re what I’m passionate about.

When did a life of performance first beckon, Ali? Like many children, I was constantly role playing, always singing. I set up the ‘Fitzgerald Stationery Shop’ in my wardrobe, and the ‘Harper’s Bizarre Fabric Store’ which sold my mother’s leftover sewing remnants. All sorts of imaginary characters visited those shops! Then I found out I could take those characters, continue ‘playing’ and make it my full-time job.

Dinner with a twist!
The Ronald McDonald House Supper Club is one of the hottest events on the social calendar, but if you missed the Christchurch event, Queenstown is getting the mystery dinner treatment on Friday 18 October. We caught up with one of the country’s leading chefs, Corey Hume, who spearheaded this mystery dining event.
How did you become involved with Ronald McDonald House? In one of my former roles I met one of America’s greatest chefs, Reimund Pitz, who started the ACF Chef & Child Foundation and it was inspiring. I thought I could do something like that. In 2002, my grandad mentioned about Ronald McDonald House opening in the South Island, so I approached the Chairman at the time, Stuart Leck. He was keen. The first event was called ‘Miles of Smiles’ and it was about young chefs supporting young children in hospital and their families. I moved overseas in 2006, so lost touch with the initiative, but was very happy to have RMHSI’s events
advisor call me inadvertently to ask if I was interested. Little did she or I know how the conversation was going to reignite my passion for the cause! I was blown away to see how it had been transformed and joined Ryan Henley, the Chef de Cuisine from Pescatore at the George Hotel, for the Christchurch Supper Club in June. How important is supporting Ronald McDonald House South Island to you? I spent a lot of time in Christchurch Hospital as a child. I understand how having their families close to them can make a real difference in their recovery. I feel like this fundraising event is a voice for them; it’s a way we as adults can come together, over a plate of food cooked with love, to
help support families who are there to support their children in their time of need. It’s been my way of giving back to the community of Christchurch that has supported me through my earlier career. You’ve got the Queenstown Supper Club coming up. What can guests look forward to? It’s going to be hosted by former Supper Club attendees. It will be great for them to see how it’s coming full circle and for me to have the opportunity to cater for them. It will be a memorable night in a truly memorable location. www.rmhsi.org.nz/event/queenstownsupper-club-2019/

Mind Matters: Stroke Awareness
The first part of the 2019 Alpine View Neurological Talk Series - in association with the Neurological Foundation. Alpine View is a new generation retirement village, with its own Wellness Programme (called TRILife) developed to enhance the lifestyle of residents through a focus on exercise, nutrition and state of mind. As part of this programme, they host TRILife Talks with expert speakers, to talk about the multiple aspects of Wellness. Alpine has been working with the Neurological Foundation to present further talks, focusing on different neurological conditions and research. The first presentation related to Stroke Recovery and Research. In the recent talk, Rich Easton, CEO of the Neurological Foundation, joined Alpine residents to introduce the guest speakers. They included Professor Maggie-Lee Huckabee, a world leader in communication disorders, and Emma Burnip, who is studying for her PhD at the University of Canterbury. Both are currently researching at the Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research - a state-of-the-art facility at St Georges Medical Centre in Christchurch. They are working to help individuals who have swallowing and communication disorders to recover function, or improve sufficiently to gain a better quality of life.
They were joined in the talk by Eric Knapp, with his own personal story of stroke recovery and rehabilitation. Eric was a strong, handsome, young firefighter, who woke up one morning unable to move or communicate. He had suffered a devastatingly severe stroke. Eric spoke of his life before and after the stroke – when he was unable to swallow and how he improved when referred to the Rose Centre for rehabilitation. His brave story of survival, hardship, and recovery was truly inspiring – and he is now employed at the centre as a Patient Consultant… while at the same time hoping his story will help other similar stroke recoverees on their difficult journey. Mind Matters: Stroke Awareness - was the first in the TRILife Neurological Talk Series at Alpine View. You should keep your eye out for guest speakers later in the year, as members of the public will be invited to attend.
Alpine View is dedicated to helping residents lead a life worth living, focusing on health and wellness.

Music Producer, Lytteltonbased Ben Edwards of Marlon Williams and Nadia Reid fame, weaved his magic on the awaited Bittersweet album of 11 tracks. Bonjour! Welcome to Akaroa FrenchFest 2019
Escape to picturesque Akaroa and immerse yourself in French culture, entertainment and romance as you celebrate Akaroa’s unique history (French, German and Maori) at Akaroa FrenchFest – a whole weekend of fun activities. All are free for the family to enjoy, except the ticketed Cabaret on Saturday night.
S
ettle in on Friday evening and relax with seaside dining. Watch the waterfront come alive on Beach Road, with entertainment and music featuring Mundy and Danger Baby. A traditional Maori pōwhiri will open the festival. Early Saturday morning (8:30am), take part in the theatrical living history reenactment with The Landing on the main beach. Telling the history and stories of the many and varied intrepid souls who travelled far and wide to make Banks Peninsula their home, The Landing is a lively, fun, historical re-enactment that leads up to the arrival in 1840 of The Comte de Paris, bringing 59 French and German settlers to Akaroa. Stories are told of these first encounters; of local iwi, the whalers, trading sailors and the first farmers, who were just set up in Akaroa. The groups of characters – played by local community members, wherever possible playing their own ancestors – will all be a part of telling these stories in a lively, historically accurate, fun, immersive and audienceinclusive way.
The Landing is followed by the parade to the Recreation Ground. At 11am on the Rec, the official part of the programme commences with speeches and the official flag raising. From 11am until 4:30pm, Le Jour du Marché (Market Day) is held with French inspired markets, games, food, entertainment and live music all day. Iconic events like the Waiters Race and the Cock Crowing competition will delight! On Saturday evening, there is a ticketed cabaret which is not to be missed. Enjoy an incredible array of music and entertainment with an enchanting French flavour all night. Delight in thrilling performances from Bonita Danger Doll, Jason Kerrison, Corner Sounds and more! Sunday will see a Circotica Circus workshop for the children plus a circus performance to close FrenchFest 2019. in the city Hottest happenings
There are some exciting things on the horizon as the inner city comes back to life. Nicholas Henare checks out some of spring’s finest.
The Riverside Market is opening on 30 September, just in time for spring, and is set to become the centre of food and activity in the city; a place where the people of Canterbury can come together and celebrate our amazing city and enjoy an incredible collection of local businesses. There’s a slice of the amazing cultures that make up our Canterbury community with flavours from around the world, including Argentinean, Greek, Chinese, French, Japanese, Thai, Indonesian, Turkish, Nepalese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian and Turkish. There’s also a fantastic selection of local businesses in the surrounding laneways ranging from gifts and fashion to streetwear and tattoos!
One event close to my heart is Hard-ly Speaking. An event aimed at changing the conversation for men in Ōtautahi, the format is simple: over the course of the evening, six diverse men speak for four minutes each. There are no hard and fast rules – just a unifying belief in the value of celebrating honesty and vulnerability, and of course, locally provided eats and drinks in an epic location. The last event saw men sharing a frank discussion about topics that we often shelve due to their sensitivity. The event is on at Christchurch BMW, 104 Moorhouse Avenue, this Thursday 19 September from 6pm to 8pm. Tickets are $55 and worth every cent. Guest speakers are Tyla Harrison Hunt, Isaac Gieson, Colin Mansbridge, Trevor Hone, Mike Brown and Gary Moore. On Thursday 24 October, a fine selection of North Canterbury wineries from across the region are coming to the Christchurch Town Hall for the annual Taste North Canterbury – a springtime extravaganza celebrating the best of locally grown drops. Head along to experience incredible wine, delicious artisan eats, top notch tunes from local DJs and a whole lot of fun – get hyped on being part of New Zealand’s coolest little wine region! This awesome event is a great way to support local producers and get a taste of the beautiful wine being made right on our doorstep. Taste North Canterbury is for everyone – serious wine fanatics, foodies, and people who get buzzed on local experiences! From 5pm to 8pm at The Limes Room, Christchurch Town Hall. Tickets $49. Making a difference A greener, greater Christchurch is what Mike Davidson stands for. At 43, the independent Papanui Ward Councillor appreciates Generation X in the political arena. “We understand the older generations, but also appreciate the needs and aspirations of younger people – such as mental health and action on climate change.
“P
Ardern, Simon Bridges and James Shaw are from Gen X and are making a difference.” Mike has plenty of political
DNA. His grandfather marginally missed out in the polls; the same fate befalling his dad. The third-time-lucky-

eople talk about the ‘boomers’ or ‘millennials’, but forget about Generation X. Political leaders like Jacinda
member of the Davidson family would love to retain his role as councillor. He even moved house with his wife Fiona and pets Jess and Mr T when St Albans’ electorate boundaries changed, to remain in the ward he represents. He believes Christchurch is heading in the right direction, and now children can cycle safely to school. He’s behind a better transport infrastructure to encourage walking and public transport, and advocates for rail and chlorine-free water. Last year he pushed his physical boundaries in the Coast to Coast, Le Race, and 42km Christchurch Marathon. Mike now eats less dairy and meat and more local organic produce for a healthier body and environment. He owns an electric car, but mainly bikes everywhere. “It’s great to get out, clear your mind, and get mentally and physically fit. “We have a great city that puts people and the environment front and centre. The power is with the people to create communities all generations can enjoy.”

Jason Sare says the company is 100-percent New Zealandowned and operated and proud to be a sustainable fishery. While all United Fisheries’ products are available in stores across the country, the place in Christchurch to get access to a wide range of seafood products, alongside friendly service, is the dispatch area at their Parkhouse Road address. Behind the counter, you’ll find Brownie Kirkwood, who has been with the company for 35 years. He and the team offer top-quality advice and expertise. The freezers are stocked with a variety of fish options, prawns, scallops, mussels, dumplings, and much, much more. Nothing goes to waste at United, as they also sell liquid fish fertilisers and pharmaceuticals. The shop is open Monday to Fridays, 7:30am-4:30pm, and from 9am-12pm on a Saturday. The United Fisheries team is excited to take the next step in their proud history this month, opening The Little Fish Co. in the Riverside Markets in late September. www.unitedfisheries.co.nz

By Clementine Page
Will floral prints ever go out of fashion? Never! But if you’re going to wear flowers, now is the time to splash out; if one thing screams ‘spring has arrived’, it’s blooming flowers! Check out our top tips for this season.
4. 5.
KATE SYLVESTER
Take inspiration from the tougher punk-style ensembles that incorporate delicate floral prints; a blouse bedecked in beautiful blooms paired with a leather skirt and knee-high boots is a fun look that’s equal parts feminine and edgy; perfect for both the office and after work drinks. If the beach is your fave summertime destination, surfergirl hibiscus prints are hotter than ever – how about a bold jumpsuit in this playful print? Don’t be afraid of experimenting with interesting colourways and layered prints; up the ante with primary brights contrasting against pastels and lighter shades, or opt for 2019’s trendy tones of teal, peach and marigold. Feeling brave? Stand out from the crowd with a daringly feminine combo of a flowery dress and plaid blazer. While loud and bold is the look of the moment, let’s not forget about the elegant and classy; paler and prettier tones are still in style, and wrap dresses, ruched midi skirts and playsuits in pretty pastel florals are spring/summer 2019’s favourite silhouettes. Into a bit of the DIY? Jazz up a pair of old jeans with a flower patch or two – try a cluster of classic daisies or peachy roses.

If it suits By Tracey Edwardes
Suits are head-turning, confidence-creating and fabulously flattering – and have now relaxed into an exciting wardrobe staple. We check out the hottest suit styles for the coming season, to take us into 2020.
1
36 September 12, 2019 Metropol
W
hile women once minced in demure pencil-skirt and jackets of the 1930s and 40s, this season’s trouser suits are taking bigger, bolder strides leading into the next decade. Anything goes in the material stakes. Ice-cream coloured pastels are a delicious summery wardrobe
treat, while on the other end of the fabric spectrum, tweeds are teaming up as dapper trouser suits for dames. Everything goes, from slippery velvets, breathable summerweight silk, perhaps black and white in a stylish wool-blend, hot fuchsia in cool linen, or metallic in modal. Suits make a unique statement. Individual personality this season takes the suit far, far away from
any corporate connotations – it’s all about suiting up and owning your own style. Celebrities from Michelle Obama to our royal influencers are flaunting floralbombed patterning to gorgeous blocks of colours and timeless neutrals. In cute or courageous original outfits – the cue is to make your own mark. Wide pants are swishy, slouchy comfort to the max – quite the opposite to what you’d expect to feel in the usual tailored two-piece. Go high-waisted and wide-legged from the hip, or do a glam Charlie’s Angel-style ’70s flare from the knee. Larger jackets have lots of wiggle room with full-on sleeves still a big fave. Teamed with high-rise heels or chunky flats – this look is quick to transform from daytime to drinkstime at the flick of a heel. Cinched in via a wide tied belt or beautiful tailoring to show off the waist, a suit jacket adds flattering femininity. But equally so, the baggier, edgy boyfriend blazer will be strutting most of our streets, paired with perfectly matching pants. Structured shoulders are invited to team up with slouchy-crotched trousers. Tiny fitted tops are tasteful under long languid jackets; juxtaposition is, after all, hip. Flattering for every figure, suits suit most bods. The silhouetteslinking sameness will elongate the shorter stature, and jackets and pants can be made to skim over or figure-hug any feature. No matter how casual the suit is stitched up, the wearer will always look somewhat polished and purposely dressed. Don’t forget, a tailor can alter any part of an otherwise perfect suit. Think about buying a suit that will look good with most of your summer shirts. Emulate a dramatic three-piece with a matching coloured top. Plunging necklines also render a sassy suit, creating a sizzling contender to the little black dress. And worth every penny is the suit’s sassy versatility in all weathers. Throw the jacket over the back of a chair and you instantly have a cooler, different look. There’s no need to find that co-ordinating summer jacket either – phew. It’s really a great two-in-one investment!

Pamper your smile Does having an enjoyable experience at the dentist seem like an alien concept? Too many of us are still likely to be apprehensive about our visits to the dentist, but one Christchurch practice aims to make that fear a thing of the past.
Y
ou can’t help but relax the moment you walk through the door at Christchurch Boutique Dental. The reception area is light, bright and comfortable with couches and easy chairs. It’s an atmosphere more like a spa or a hotel than a dental practice. “We want our patients to feel pampered and to look forward to their dental visits,” says dental surgeon Dr David Kao. The pampering extends to the clinical expertise offered by the practice. Dr Kao has dedicated his clinic to making high-end dentistry affordable. He has a passion for the precision
of microscope-enhanced treatments that are minimally invasive for the patient and that deliver the best possible results. “Using an operating microscope allows dentistry to be performed on a level that was previously unheard of.” Christchurch Boutique Dental is one of a kind in other ways too. It is the only practice in the country that offers not only general dentistry, but the full range of advanced dentistry specialities as well – orthodontics, complex root canals, surgical wisdom tooth extraction, implants and gum grafts. “We go the extra mile
to ensure our treatments are tailored to our patients’ needs and that our care changes their lives.”

A natural nutrient boost could be your key to optimum health.
Sight – The impact of colour in this large, airy space of massed flowers, bouquets, potted colour, pots and vases, and exquisite French Country silk flowers (the biggest selection in Christchurch, which can be arranged in customers’ own vases) is visually stunning. Sound – The tiered water fountain with its gentle trickle of water makes for a soothing background accompaniment while wandering through this delightful flowery bowery. Smell – Bask in a myriad of flower scents, then nuzzle your nose amongst the heavenly scented candles and diffusers from Mor (Marshmallow, Peony, Pomegranate, Belladonna, Snow Gardenia and Lychee Flower), the food-fragranced Waxglo collection and new room-scenting ranges from Australia and America. What an olfactory oasis! Taste – If it’s something sweet you seek to win that special person’s favour, then a box of award-winning Devonport Chocolates, such as the scrumptious Luxurious Chocolate Assortment, will have them surrendering in no time. Touch – With an extensive giftware range that’s ever-changing, take time to inspect frames, mirrors, ornaments and household ware, unique cards-to-cherish and so much more. “Our flowers are always different,” Suzie says, “That’s why our customers love coming here.” Find Kaiapoi Florist & Gifts at 178E River View Terraces, Williams Street, Kaiapoi. any of us believe we eat a healthy diet full of nutrients, but did you know fruits and vegetables today aren’t nearly as rich in vitamins and minerals as they were decades ago? This is mainly due to modern mass-agricultural methods and the lack of nutrients in our soil. Supplements can help, however most on the market are made using synthetic vitamins and minerals, which studies have shown to be 50 to 70 percent less biologically active than natural ones – meaning our body can’t absorb and utilise them as well. It’s vital to support our bodies in an age where we are timepoor, over-worked and underrested, and a nutritional boost of natural vitamins, minerals, probiotics and more can assist with a range of health concerns and deficiencies. Kiki Health supplements and superfoods have just launched at Nicola Quinn in Merivale for the first time in New Zealand, and are natural, organic and GMO-free. Their carefully selected ingredients are sourced ethically from remote areas of the world where they grow best, and are either raw, carefully cold-pressed or naturally dried to retain their benefits. The products are also completely free from fillers, additives and synthetics, meaning only pure and potent nutrients. Some powerful products in the range include alkalising powder, green superfood and Acai powders, marine collagen, hemp protein, probiotics and more, each with benefits specific to different health concerns. Cellulite Salvation “Even small people have cellulite,” says Wendy Barker, Director of Christchurch beauty and massage favourite Beauty Progress. Cellulite is the accumulation of fat cells in the form of clusters, given a dimpled appearance or ‘orange peel’ skin. These clusters compress circulation systems and leading to inflammation at the level of connective tissues, increasing water retention and allowing the accumulation of toxins and a loss of elasticity.
A

Best foot forward It’s been six months since Mikko Shoes arrived in Christchurch and opened its beautiful Victoria Street store. After a busy winter, the familyowned company has been preparing for the warm season ahead.
M
etropol sat down with Mikko’s founder, Michaela Longstaff, to discuss some of the new trends arriving in store now.
1. 2. 3.
What are the key trends to look out for this coming spring/summer? Each new season we look for the vibrant new styles that are on trend, while ensuring they still feel classic enough to last for years to come. A great example of this is animal print – a huge trend for spring, but in our opinion, it’s now a neutral. This season the print du jour is the subtle, sophisticated snakeskin texture – we’re huge fans. How about new colour palettes? It’s all about those citrus and sorbet tones. From peppermint and seafoam to tangy tangerine, we can’t get enough of these dreamy feminine and joyfully bold colours that bring grace and energy to summer dressing. What new shapes are you excited about this season? There are so many beautiful, interesting heel shapes. Our elegant courts range includes styles with sculptured, art deco inspired heels which add gorgeous sophistication. And of course, Mikko shoes come in premium, soft leather and offer foot support. Comfort has never been so fashionable.
Pop in to 143 Victoria Street, Christchurch, to see Mikko’s experienced styling team for a personalised fitting. There is something to suit everyone this season from their unparalleled collection of heritage, handcrafted European brands.

While a larger bust can be aesthetically pleasing to some and even a source of envy to others, it might not be such a delight to its owner. The weight of the breasts can cause back, neck and shoulder pain, deep grooves from bra straps in the shoulders and restrict movement. Furthermore, the emotional toll can be immense – unwanted attention that begins in teenage years can be excruciating with women feeling defined by their large breasts, while obtaining comfortable and attractive bra support and finding great clothes that fit and flatter becomes a lifelong pursuit.

raditional breast reduction surgery is expensive and only a very small proportion of applicants each year get to have the procedure within the public system. Traditional breast reduction surgery also needs to be carried out by plastic or general surgeons. However, the fantastic news is that breast reduction procedures using tumescent liposuction have been developed and practised by dermatological surgeons such as Grant Bellaney, skin and fat specialist and founder of the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic. “Most breasts, particularly in women over the age of 40, consist of 40 to 60 percent fat, so the removal of some of that fat through a procedure called tumescent liposuction can give a significant reduction in breast size,” Grant says. Producing extremely good results, the procedure is suitable for all ages, particularly those over the age of 40. It was first used in the 1980s and has an outstanding safety
record. The list of advantages over traditional breast reduction surgery include use of tumescent rather than general anaesthetic, key hole surgery resulting in fast healing and little or no scarring, and it is a day procedure with a faster recovery time. “There are also fewer side effects. With traditional surgery about 10 to 25 percent of patients can experience a loss of sensitivity in the nipples or an inability to breastfeed afterwards. With tumescent liposuction, the risk reduces to less than one percent,” Grant says. Dr Bellaney is the only specialist in the South Island performing this technique and has successfully performed this procedure on hundreds of women over the last 10 years. For more information, phone the day surgery clinic, situated at 248 Papanui Road Merivale, on 03 356 0214, or visit the website www.encorehealth.co.nz.

Improving bowel cancer outcomes
One of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in New Zealand is bowel cancer. In fact, we have one of the highest percentages of bowel cancer in the world.
B
owel cancer can occur at any age but is more common after the age of 50 years. Risk factors include a strong family history, a diet high in fat and low in fruit and vegetables, lack of exercise, smoking and inflammatory bowel disease. Screening with tests such as a CT colonography means bowel cancers can be detected early before symptoms even develop, significantly improving outcomes for many patients. CT colonography is a CT (computerised tomography) scan of the abdomen, which produces a series of low dose, cross-sectional x-ray images. These images are
then processed by powerful computer programs into 3D pictures showing bones, blood vessels and soft tissues such as the large bowel. At Pacific Radiology Canterbury, we are fortunate to have some of the most experienced CT colonography radiologists (doctors who read medical imaging) anywhere in New Zealand or Australia. “Pacific Radiology uses some of the finest CT scanning equipment and software accessible today,” Managing Radiologist for Canterbury, Dr Jeremy Sharr says. “We are constantly striving to improve our service so that
the patient is getting the best medical imaging available.” CT colonography is a highly accurate examination which can detect clinically significant growths or polyps in the bowel that may become cancerous. It is a safe, non-invasive and sedation-free alternative to a colonoscopy. No scopes are required. During the procedure only a small tube is placed in the bottom through which some air is used to help distend the bowel for clearer images. The day before the scan patients are required to take some preparation for the examination to clear out the bowel. On the day of the
procedure, patients have a small drink of contrast to help improve the visibility of the bowel on the scan. Symptoms of bowel cancer are often non-specific but can include a continual change in bowel habits, the presence of blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort or pain, unexplained weight loss and bloating. Sometimes there are no symptoms. Early detection is a key defence against bowel cancer and screening tests are recommended for those at risk. Please contact your doctor if you have any concerns about your health.

Destination Honeymoon By Tracey Edwardes
The honeymoon; that blissful life event in both time and place, when you get to have your new spouse all to yourself.
N
owadays, honeymoons are an evolving rehash on tradition, to fit in with our unique and crazy lifestyles, and new possibilities the world has to offer. Nonetheless, they are best totally tailormade to each twosome. One thing is for sure, ironically even the most spontaneous adventures are best well planned. Booking your honeymoon in advance is always the best adage. This is to take full advantage of lucrative flight deals, exclusive sought-after accommodation and perhaps

that coveted honeymoon suite. To be assured of getting in to the resort which has the most azure waters, or the room with the best views, it’s the early bride and groom that gets rewarded. It’s one big important job out of the way too, while wedding frivolities are filling up the diary. There is plenty of evidence to suggests that looking forward to a holiday is just as pleasurable as being on one! Have the travel wallet ready on the mantelpiece and start dreaming. The destination and budget may not be a problem, but time
is increasingly of greater issue to couples. Mini-moons are bitesized holidays, where you can snatch say a luxury three-day romance across the ditch, and then save the fortnight full-on safari for a year down the track. It is sure to keep the flames of love flickering. If you have a ho-hum budget, lavish it up locally and go 5-star all the way, without the travel expense. You’ll be far too busy looking into each other’s eyes to notice the familiar scenery anyway. Just be sure you are tucked away from everyone you know. Also, many new resorts and hotels have amazing opening specials. You could nab a 5-star experience for a 3-star price. This is where a travel agent in the know can be a godsend. Honeymoons can have another purpose, perhaps to learn a new skill or share a mutual passion or hobby, even one that got you together in the first place. Perhaps a culinary educational tour for foodies or a cycle adventure. Find a romantic city and immerse yourselves in every crevice of its art and culture scene. Or flee straight to
where the snow is falling and ski your hearts out. Eco-based holidays are also a choice of heart. What lures most couples though is sunny beaches where toes entwine in white sand – with frozen margaritas to cool off. Sigh. There are romantic clichés for a reason. Check out resorts that families are unlikely to flock to. Pick the quiet season, or a secret spot with no crowds. Choose a cruise that’s not a party ship - one where you can have the option of dining and reclining alone together under the full moon. Don’t forget to tell everyone, from the airline to hotels and restaurants, that this is your honeymoon. You never know your luck; many people in the tourism industry are only too pleased to dish out the royal romantic treatment. Occurring once in a blue moon, this is the holiday that you’ll be asked to talk about until the end of time. The photos will up there with the wedding pics. So, make it a magical, memorable one – or two.

We can give you a shimmering sexy blonde or cool iris sparkle, or many more to embrace the grey.” You don’t want to live at your hairdressers, so rather than leaving a harsh regrowth line, their techniques will disguise new growth with a soft, flattering look. “We understand that as your grey hair comes in you still want to look great. A great cut also plays a big part in this; you want a cut that enhances your features.” Head in for a complimentary consultation with one of their specialists in going grey gracefully. After all, V For Hair and Beauty ‘gets’ grey hair and takes great pride in making ladies feel beautiful.
The perfect fit Purchasing an engagement ring is an exciting milestone and there’s plenty to consider when making this significant decision.
T
hankfully, the highly-skilled team at Via Sollertia Jewellers can help streamline the process, with handy tips, friendly service and expertise. Before purchasing or having something special custom-made, it’s important to consider your stone choice. Diamonds and sapphires are known to be harder-wearing, but if you have another stone in mind, the setting design can be adjusted to suit for daily practicality.
Of course, the engagement is just the beginning, so it also pays to think ahead and factor in wedding and eternity rings that will fit together in the future. The important thing is not to feel overwhelmed by the process, that’s where the Via Sollertia staff can help. It’s easy to overcomplicate the design and it becomes a chore, rather than the enjoyable experience it should be.

Ginger Berry Fizz We’re all about mocktails at the moment and Seedlip is the drink to drink when you don’t want to ‘drink’.
Ingredients 50ml Seedlip Grove 42 1 tsp plum or berry jam 1 chunk fresh ginger, approx. 1cm thick All Good Apple & Blackcurrant switchel** Ice cubes
PHOTO: BABICHE MARTENS
Method Add Seedlip Grove, jam and ginger into a shaker with ice. Shake well. Double strain into a tumbler. Double straining ensures you will not have any bits of jam berries or ginger chunks in your drink. Add ice into tumbler. Top with switchel. Gently stir to mix. Garnish with crystallised ginger or fresh ginger.
B
lended and bottled in the UK, Seedlip boasts many tempting qualities – say goodbye to calories, sugar and artificial sweeteners and hello to quality. The three fantastic flavours – ‘Garden 108’, ‘Spice 94’ and
‘Grove 42’ - are massively popular worldwide, with its NZ launch in February 2018 seeing the first shipment gone in one week! You too can master the mocktail with this Ginger Berry Fizz recipe.
** A switchel is a historical drink dating back to the 17th century, classically made with water mixed with apple cider vinegar and often spiced with ginger. Switchels are commonly flavoured with seasonal fruit.

Prawn Dumplings with Chilli Chinkiang Vinegar MAKES ABOUT
60 If I ever decide to open a restaurant, dumplings would feature prominently on the menu. There is something incredibly satisfying about making dumplings and eating them is even more gratifying. So expect to find not just one dumpling recipe in this cookbook. 60 wonton wrappers FILLING 300g raw prawn meat, finely chopped 100g white or savoy cabbage, finely shredded 1 medium carrot, finely shredded 1 cup chopped English spinach 2 large cloves garlic, peeled and coarsely grated 20g ginger, peeled and coarsely grated 2 large stalks spring onions, finely chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander leaves and stems 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons mirin 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon cracked white pepper 2 teaspoons cornflour
DRESSING 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce 4 tablespoons Chinkiang black vinegar 2 tablespoons light soy sauce 2 tablespoons water 2 teaspoons sesame oil 2 teaspoons chilli oil 4 teaspoons raw sugar ¾ teaspoon Szechuan pepper 1-2 large red chilli, finely diced 2 rounded tablespoons finely sliced coriander stems and roots 3-4 spring onion stalks, finely sliced TOPPING Black Bean XO Sauce 1-2 spring onion stalks, finely chopped Crispy shallots
Recipe from Cook & Feast by Audra Morrice (Landmark Books, $39.99)
Method Microwave the shredded the cabbage for one minute, then squeeze out as much of the moisture as possible between your palms. Do the same for the carrot and English spinach. Place all the ingredients for the filling in a large glass bowl and mix until well combined. I find it easiest to use a large fork to stir, followed by a spoon to finish off the mixing. This will ensure you don’t compress and mush up the mixture too much. For the dressing, mix all its ingredients in a glass jar. This can be made a few days
in advance and stored in the fridge for up to a week or two. To wrap a dumpling, place one teaspoon of the filling in the middle of a wonton wrapper. Dab the edges of half the wrapper with water, then fold the wrapper over the filling to make a triangle. Seal the dumpling by gently pressing outwards from the filling to the edges to ensure that there are no air pockets. Hold the dumpling with the long side of the triangle away from you and bring the two sealed edges of the wrapper to the bottom. Secure by putting a tiny bit
of water on one of the edges, overlapping with the other, and pressing gently. Repeat with all the filling and wrappers. Bring a medium to large saucepan of water to the boil. Poach the dumplings a bunch at a time, taking care not to overcrowd the saucepan. The dumplings will float when they are cooked. Remove with a slotted spoon and place in individual bowls or a large plate. Sprinkle over the black vinegar chilli dressing, a dollop of my Black Bean XO Sauce (recipe in book) and scatter with chopped spring onions and crispy shallots. Metropol September 12, 2019 59

Making Food Safe
As consumers we buy our food from all kinds of outlets – from supermarkets and restaurants to bakeries and burger bars. We eat it, focusing on the way it tastes and the way it makes us feel. Do we tend to think about how safe it is or whether it might be putting us at risk in some way? Those are less likely thoughts we have when we eat.
B
ut it is vital that someone is thinking about this and doing everything possible to protect consumers’ health by ensuring that food outlets meet all the necessary requirements
regarding food safety and suitability. In New Zealand any business supplying food must comply with a complex range of such requirements to identify and create awareness
of any potential hazards for the consumer. These hazards may be in relation to preparation, production, manufacture, packaging, storage, handling, transport or distribution of any food type. Under the Food Act (2014) each business must have a Food Control Plan (FCP) or National Programme (NP), which sets out what steps a food business needs to take to make their food safe. Businesses use the plans to identify risks and show how they’re being managed. It’s all very well to have the plans, but who makes sure the plans are actually being properly implemented? Auditing Solutions NZ, based in Christchurch with several regional offices, is a recognised national leader in evaluation or ‘verification’ of food plans and programmes across the wider food industry sectors in this
country. The company holds full accreditation by International Accreditation NZ (IANZ) to ISO:IEC 17020 as an inspection body and is approved and registered by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) as a recognised agency for the evaluation and verification of food control plans. Auditing Solutions NZ has developed a reputation as a provider of high integrity to numerous food industry customers with its team of experienced professional verifiers. The team has developed excellent customer relationships and is industryfriendly, yet maintains the impartiality required to undertake their respective evaluation and verification roles. So we as food consumers can rest easy knowing that Auditing Solutions NZ is working diligently with our health and safety in mind.

Exceptional culinary choice What can one say about Crisp Café that hasn’t been said already? Locals come from around Christchurch and even as far as Ashburton, just to sample the great eats and beverages from Nick and Sue Leadbeater and their familyrun café. Located at Shop 2 in the heart of the Fendalton Village Shopping Centre, Crisp Café is a warm and friendly family-run business, which you experience the moment you set foot in the door.
T
he most unique aspect of Crisp Café is the food on offer, particularly the addition of ketogenic or keto foods to
the menu – keto is based on the concept of high-fat and low-carb. Gluten-free food also makes up more than half
of Crisp Café’s menu, making it the definitive gluten-free go-to in Canterbury. With a stunning selection of sweets, savouries, pies, slices and even some scrumptious cheesecakes, you are well catered for. Basically, if the centrepiece of your diet is of a gluten-free variety, you simply won’t find this level of culinary choice anywhere else. A hot cup of barista-made coffee is never far away and the fully equipped kitchen is expertly run by Nick and his team. With a new menu proving very popular, and great weekly specials on hand, isn’t it time you visited Crisp Café?

Spring Brunch Delights Popular Kaiapoi eatery Red Eight Café has now introduced its delicious brunch menu every day.
P
astry chef Stephanie Reeves, owner of Red Eight, has spruced up the brunch menu for spring, and extended the hours it’s available. From 8am ‘til 2pm daily, except Sunday when it’s closed, the new brunch offerings are up for grabs. The avocado on rye or rosti is always popular, Stephanie says.
So, too, are the pancakes served with fresh fruit, butterscotch sauce, ice cream and gingernut crumble. Headlining the new menu, however, is the eggs benedict. It’s served on a crispy agria potato rosti with mushrooms and spinach, or bacon, or smoked salmon, and the hollandaise sauce is housemade.

Back to Black
F
By Clementine Page
Black has long evoked a sense of luxury, indulgence and dramatic sophistication, and it never goes out of style. Throughout the year we’ve seen interior designers opting for bold, dark and sultry, welcoming all shades of ebony from the kitchen to the bedroom. Now black is stealing the spotlight from the traditional white bathroom we’ve adored for what feels like centuries. Feeling a little wary of this dramatic colour? We’ll guide you through the ins and outs that’ll have you embracing the dark side in no time.
or the bold and the brave, perhaps a whole bathroom makeover is in store. The monochrome traditionalist seeking a bathroom revamp will feel right at home with a statement black feature wall behind an original white vanity, and black tiles are not only arguably more practical than their white counterpart, they’re also incredibly classy too. Sleek black marble is highly appreciated in modern interior design for its striking stylishness; for that true grandeur, pair with gold or copper bathroom amenities like tapware, sinks and mirrors. Black also works well as a complementary accent, particularly if you want to play it safe, so consider replacing your existing faucets, shower head, radiator and other fixtures with raw black versions. Industrial-inspired elements in black are also oh-sotrendy this year thanks to their minimalist look that’s equal parts rugged and refined. So why not take a walk on the dark side – your bathroom will thank you for it.

or a special Christmas gift, make Framemakers in Woodend your one-stop shop. Owners Lynn and Graham pride themselves on taking the time to ensure their customers make the perfect selection for their artwork. With a wide range of different frame mouldings and mats to choose from, Lynn says it’s not until the moulding is seen with the artwork that a perfect match is made. “While we often have customers seeking quotations over the phone or by email, this can be challenging because of
the extensive selection available. Other times, our customers come into the store with a pre-conceived idea of style and colour, but end up selecting something quite different.” Lynn and Graham say the best idea is to bring your work into the shop and spend some time going over the various options – without obligation. If required, a written quotation can also be provided. Framemakers can take care of all your framing needs – from sports jerseys, sports memorabilia and medals

A study in contrast I Decorating with complementary colours can be a challenging look to pull off, but when everything comes together, the results are memorable. n this space, the sofa and the pendant lamp, vase, dish and small retro nesting table in Resene Wishing Well provide high contrast with the Resene Bluetooth walls and Resene Jailbreak console, while the small bowl in Resene Japonica brings in a softer orange to balance out the look and play off tones in the artwork. Neutral floors in Resene Alabaster lighten things up

any architectural style. Louvre Solutions manufactures its louvres from extruded aluminium which offers greater durability than traditional patio covers. Unlike plastic or fabric, these components will outperform in heat, wind and rain. “When we started out, these premium products were prohibitively expensive and reserved for the elite. Even with ongoing improvements and advancements in technology to our products, we are able to offer Louvre Solutions at an affordable price to a wider market. We are now able to be accessible to markets from entry-level properties to very high-end spec homes,” Craig explains. The benefits of a louvre roof are many, ranging from aesthetics to practicality. They are a brilliant addition to homes and can be proactively planned as part of the design/build process or retrofitted once the need is identified postconstruction. With more than 14 years in the industry, Louvre Solutions’ reputation has been built on a solid foundation. Craig and his team pride themselves on their burgeoning portfolio of repeat and referred business generated through word of mouth, independent builders, architects, landscape architects and building companies. Louvre Solutions manufactures its products at its Canterbury-based factory. A louvre roof can be ready for installation within four to six weeks, making today the perfect time to order yours to ensure spring outdoor enjoyment and intelligent preparation for summer. Elegance & Character
For the Brown family, copper and brass are like living things that can be transformed into the most amazing products. Before the earthquakes the family owned a vintage hardware and heritage restoration business. February 2011 destroyed that and the Browns needed to find a new direction. Left with just a few elegant period taps, a passion for engineering and a drive to develop the perfect shower, Hydra Plumbing was born.
T
oday the company is a bespoke plumbing manufacturer creating showers, basins, taps, baths and sinks predominantly using solid copper and brass. It’s the longevity of these materials that was the attraction and the fact that they can survive in any environment. As the Browns say – “We build all our products with outdoor applications in mind. What works for outdoors will also work indoors.” Hydra Plumbing’s showers have been shipped all over the
world, to some 32 countries, where they grace the precincts of beautiful luxury resorts and hotels. Such elegance and character is also available for the local market. A stunning copper shower rose can be matched with custom-made taps and basins, towel rails and toilet roll holders to achieve a distinctive look that is appropriate either for the sympathetic restoration of heritage properties or for a unique look in modern, architecturally designed homes.
All of Hydra Plumbing’s Heritage range products are crafted in their Christchurch workshop by hand using time-tested techniques and robust materials. They build by hand to ensure customers get exactly what they need and to allow the flexibility for unique designs. “Many of our product designs are customerdriven. They may send us a picture of something that appeals to them and ask us to make it. Customers these days are more aware that they
can have something different – something that truly reflects their taste and is not mass produced.” To create that special point of difference, copper and brass can also be finished in a variety of ways to match other fittings. The polished finish is the starting point for all the finishes and is done by hand using an electric buffing machine, polishing wheels and waxbased polish. The antique finish is an evolution of the polished finish. Fittings are dipped into a water-based oxidiser that speeds up the aging process, rapidly achieving months of aging in about twenty minutes. Hydra Plumbing can also provide a chrome finish by chrome plating their copper and brass fittings using an electroplating process. Then there is the nickel finish – a variation of the chrome plated one with a more matte silver finish. The copper and brass can also be powder coated. All these options simply serve to emphasise that the showers and fittings from Hydra Plumbing are indeed custommade to each owners’ specific needs. That’s what makes these beautiful pieces even more attractive. To take advantage of Hydra Plumbing’s bespoke service, contact them on Freephone 0508 426 225 or email info@ hydraplumbing.co.nz. Thompson and Janice Burnett have received glowing feedback from visitors to past Spring Flings, from saying how much they love the event – with many describing it as “a hidden gem” – through to praise of the quality stalls, food and beverages, music, exhibits, demonstrations, and the excellent management of the garden tour (hosted/run by Broadfield Garden owner David Hobbs and his head gardener). The fete is run by dedicated volunteers, with 100 percent of all profits going to charity (Community Care Lincoln). “Our point of difference to other fetes is that the garden is spectacular; it blows people away, especially if they’ve not been before,” Vanessa says. “It really is a day out; people come for lunch, a bit of shopping and to wander around the garden. We even get quite a few men!” Held on Sunday 6 October from 11am-4pm at 250 Selwyn Road, Prebbleton, Selwyn. Find the event listing on Facebook www.facebook.com/ EllesmereSpringFling.

Our Real Estate
i S
Every country has its own real estate signature and New Zealand, whilst being relatively young by international standards, has developed a unique derivation of this. Property, land and home ownership run deeply through the Kiwi psyche and these three elements are contextualized every day in all media forms. The New Zealand real estate signature can include property that reflects our rugged coastal footprint, a strong social conscience and DIY as second nature. This translates to dark colours and tactile materials prevailing in some locations and with some architects, a history of social housing and a massive home improvement industry. We’ve developed a vocabulary that includes ‘first-home purchasers’, ‘investors’, ‘Gen X buyers’ and ‘affordability levels’, but beneath all of this are some glaring changes.
Home-ownership levels are decreasing, property prices are rising beyond the reach of many and the median age for purchasing is now 30 and over. For most, the remedy appears to be getting comfortable with high debt levels, families helping out, or defaulting to a ‘why buy when you can rent?’ scenario. The dream property in my parents’ time usually had three bedrooms, a lounge you sat in (I don’t think we called it entertaining), sun if you were lucky and space for a vege garden. Today it could be any number of scenarios. As a realtor of more than 25 years, I’ve always valued the coalface perspective you get dealing with people and their property aspirations – and occasional disasters. It’s kept me grounded. The winter months now behind us also remind me that whilst some members of the community will be able to choose clean green millennial living and heating, for others it’s a much simpler set of desires. Property will always be a driver, for others an anchor: for me, it’s a business and a love affair.
Points to consider when planning to purchase your first property: Save hard, the less you borrow, the less you owe. Deposits can be hefty. Take time to do a reasonable amount of due diligence. Building checks may seem expensive but they are nothing compared to a leaky home or a property that has issues. Stay real and try hard to keep your expectations in check. Your first home is exactly that. Suburbs such as Merivale, Fendalton and Cashmere are usually priced above a first home budget. Accept that this time around and who knows next time. Work with people you trust and who have your best interests at heart! Then away you go!

arris House, at 234 St Asaph Street, is an art deco styled building, meticulously renovated with respect to its period. It incorporates six spacious office suites suitable for four to eight people. Each space is fitted out with designer furniture, adjustable-height desks, office chairs, heat pump and fibre broadband. Each office also has its own meeting room, block-out blinds, full kitchen with fridge, and beautifully tiled bathroom toilet and shower facilities. There is secure, indoor basement parking, plus plenty of outdoor parking space. SALT (St Asaph, Lichfield and Tuam) District is an exciting place. There are excellent amenities nearby, including eateries, ARA, retail precincts and public transport
hubs, and Harris House sits right in the middle of it all. SALT’s always been edgy, says KPI Rothschild Director Shaun Stockman. “Post-quake it’s still edgy. There are creatives, and multi-million dollar brands. It’s evolved. A lot of the heritage has been retained. There’s Little High, the Dux, Smash Palace. People see it as a very cool part of the city.” The 1938 building is also home to Lemon Tree, a spacious, eclectically themed café perfectly situated to service the offices at Harris House. There are still three suites available, due to be completed to the same exacting standards as the suites that are currently tenanted. They will be ready in early September.

ducation been in the spotlight in recent months – and a shake-up of the sector has been long overdue. The most significant development has been the decision on the Review of Vocational Education (RoVE), with 16 institutes of technology and polytechnics to be merged into the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST) from 1 April 2020, and a handful of Workforce Development Councils to be created. We look forward to seeing greater collaboration between training providers and the business community to ensure training is fit for purpose and aligned with the skills needed by the industry now and into the future, and to support economic growth, taking into account regional nuances. With the announcement of the NZIST Establishment Board being based in Christchurch, this invites an opportunity to present a strong business case to house the national head office in Christchurch, creating over 100 jobs and reinforcing our position as a national centre for education and innovation. It’s also imperative we focus on lifelong learning and integrated education that responds to the changing nature of work. That’s why we welcomed the Government’s recent announcement of an additional $14.5 million to the employer-led workplace literacy and numeracy fund – bringing its total contribution to $45 million over the next four years. Lifelong learning gives employees the opportunity to continue with personal development, enabling them to step into higher-level roles or learn new skills to carry them through different jobs and industries. It also enables the employer to increase productivity meaning that re-training and redeployment is a priority now more than ever.

N
ine years on from the September earthquake, one of the most difficult issues still remaining for people in our city is the case of on-sold overcap properties. This is where a home is damaged in the earthquakes, has an EQC claim or repair, and is then on-sold, only for it to be discovered there is still damage that was missed or not fixed properly, that pushes the home over the statutory cap on EQC payments. For years this issue has trapped some Canterbury homeowners in limbo – they can’t get private insurance to cover it as they aren’t the original owner and they can’t get further EQC payouts beyond the cap. Recently, our government has stepped in to help people who have been trapped for far too long. We’ve put $300 million dollars on the table for ex gratia payments, above the EQC cap, to people trapped in an on-sold mess. This funding will help people be able to finally repair their homes and get on with their lives. Claimants will have 12 months to get their homes checked and apply for funding. Homeowners will have 12 months to make a claim to EQC for defective repairs or previously undetected damage. EQC will then work with the homeowners to agree a payment amount so repairs can be made. This will change lives for people who have been trapped for years and help people get a sense of hope back for their future.
I
f the last few months of winter 2019 had a theme for our city’s startup and innovation ecosystem, that theme would be startup funding. As you know, our government’s Wellness Budget allocates $300 million to a fund of funds for startup investment managed by NZ Venture Investment Fund. While our local startups have decent access to early seed funding, they’ve not been able to easily access the larger sums required for global growth. This has impacted our speed to market and our ability as a country to be competitive with homegrown innovation. The NZVIF fund of funds is set to change that. There’s also been plenty of activity from international venture capital groups. Blackbird Ventures have recently announced they are setting up an Auckland office, raising a seed fund dedicated to Kiwi founders, and running their community building Sunrise conference in Auckland in October. Christchurch has also recently hosted Innovation Bay – an Australian tech investment network – with two events run in the central city. The first event had local startups hearing from a panel of leading Australian VCs. The second was an event where handpicked NZ startups pitched to Australian investors. An increased level of interest and activity in NZ startups from international investors is encouraging. However, we’re looking forward to seeing our homegrown investor ecosystem catch up quickly so that we can ensure that NZ innovation builds the NZ economy rather than moving overseas to access foreign investment.

n a day and age where everything happens at lightning speed, there are still times when it pays to take your time – planning a holiday is one of them. While the internet is packed with DIY travel agencies that can see you booking a holiday with a few clicks of the finger, this is one area where faster isn’t necessarily better and there are plenty of benefits to booking through a professional travel agency. Firstly, an agency isn’t necessarily more expensive! With long-standing relationships with airlines and suppliers, House of Travel consultants can provide great deals to locations all over the world. In addition to competitive pricing, they’re privy to many websites the public can’t access. This also enables them to create the trip of your dreams – after all, holidays are about so much more than flights and hotels! They can create bespoke holidays with every client’s tastes, preferences and visions in mind. Once you’ve decided on where and when, they’ll also make sure everything is easy. They can book rental cars, day trips, tours, and even sort the right travel insurance to suit you and your budget. A big part of the fun of planning a holiday is looking through the incredible options available, but it can also get a little overwhelming. House of Travel consultants are trained across all aspects of the industry and, because they’re world travellers themselves, they can provide you with local knowledge and secret spots to help make your trip the experience of a lifetime. Great holidays made better together.
W
hile it’s a scenic part of the city, the riverside section of Oxford Terrace between Kilmore Street and Fitzgerald Avenue, known as the Avon Loop, also currently features a mix of overgrown plants and broken asphalt as a result of the earthquakes. So, we are looking forward to getting work underway in the area later this year to make this section of Oxford Terrace a safer and more pleasant place to be. A smooth pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, boardwalk, canoe/kayak ramp, native planting and new lighting will be incorporated into the area, along with some car parking. The Loop will also be the pedestrian/ cycling connection between our recently completed work on the City Promenade and any future developments in the Residential Red Zone. Most of the homes in the Avon Loop were removed a long time ago but we know that many former residents are still passionate about the area. While we are not carrying out any work on the former residential land, everyone agrees this project is an important step in revitalising this part of the city. It will enable and encourage people to come back to the area by creating an easy to follow route from the Avon Loop to other key city features like the Margaret Mahy Family Playground, Victoria Square, Te Pae, The Terraces and the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial. We are currently evaluating tenders for the construction work and look forward to keeping you updated on our progress throughout the project, which we expect to have completed early in 2020.
T
he recent announcement of the Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration’s decision to approve the Regeneration Plan for the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor is a significant milestone for Christchurch. It is an exciting time for the city as the plan will guide long-term investment and commitment from multiple parties over the coming decades. Its vision of the river connecting us together – with each other, with nature and with new possibilities – reflects the community’s priorities for the area. The opportunity to create an exemplar of climate change response that will benefit people and countries around the world will further enhance Christchurch’s national and international point of difference; and an 11-kilometre Green Spine will connect the central city to New Brighton with a mix of recreational, commercial and community uses. Since delivering the Regeneration Plan for the Minister’s decision-making, Regenerate Christchurch has also provided advice to the Crown and Council on leadership and governance of the area. We have recommended an independent entity to provide strong governance and independence, and we welcome the inclusion of a governance entity in the Christchurch City Council’s Global Settlement Agreement with the Crown. The Regeneration Plan supports environmental leadership whilst also providing flexibility to accommodate changing community views and technological advancements that might emerge over the course of the coming decades. It identifies land uses that are best for achieving the vision while anticipating and accommodating the potential for change over time. This, I believe, will prove to be one of its greatest strengths.

BUILDING FIRM’S NEW HOME Nathan Roberts left school and became a builder; that was nearly twenty years ago. Since then, having worked for a couple of well-established Canterbury building firms and created a partnership, he now heads his own company. NKR Builders is an awardwinning, Canterbury-based building firm. It has earned multiple Gold Awards in the Master Builder’s House of the Year competitions and won Gold Reserve for a client’s home in Southshore. Nathan’s in charge, leading two teams of qualified builders and apprentices who have been with him for the long term. Those relationships are important for the company, he says, and even more so for his clients. The experience and trust entrenched 88 September 12, 2019 Metropol
in those working connections is at the heart of the success the company enjoys. From large farm sheds, small (or large) alterations, shop and office fitouts, and residential builds, Nathan’s focus has become high-end architecturally designed builds. That’s where he feels at home. Literally. For the past three years, he and his wife Julia have been running NKR out of their home in North Canterbury. The (until recently) office of NKR was their 2017 Master Builder’s House of the
Year Gold Award ‘Builder’s Own Home’ category house in West Eyreton. From there, Nathan organised the building teams and accountant Julia managed the accounts and, as the business grew, implemented systems to make it more efficient. In July of this year, however, NKR fitted out and moved into a newly leased space in Sydenham, which is made up of new offices, a warehouse space where some stock is maintained and a swanky new conference room where Nathan and clients can relax with a coffee and discuss making dreams come true. It’s a display place, too. While discussing the details of your new build, you can view and choose some of the things that will feature in it; window
frames and extrusions, carpet samples, drawer fronts and handles, doors and handles, weatherboard and cedar cladding profiles, lighting and light switches, joinery, paint samples, piles of brochures and literature and much more. Lest it be a little overwhelming, Nathan is there every step of the way. Whether you have a design already drawn up, a sketch on an envelope, or just an idea in your mind, he can make it happen. From start to finish Nathan manages every aspect of the project, assuring complete satisfaction. To celebrate the move to the new premises, Nathan and Julia recently put on a spread for the team and a few of their suppliers. They fired up the mobile BBQ from Hagley Windows and Doors, fed everybody and posed for a few photos. Contact Nathan on 027 950 8118 or via the website www.nkr.co.nz. Sit down with him, have a coffee or tea and discuss your new dream home.

van Stanicich of Fowler Homes is referring to the new headquarters of the North Canterbury Fish & Game Council in Christchurch for which Fowler Homes received a national Silver Award in this

CAPTURING LOCAL ESSENCE
This was achieved using many local sustainable materials – local gravel for the Allied Concrete Superslab, sustainable plantation pine framing, western cedar weatherboards, river stone walls, external and internal gabion baskets filled by hand with local river stones, and workstations and office tables custom-made from local macrocarpa. “We didn’t view this commercial project any differently from building a house. It is, in effect, a daytime home for the staff with a catering kitchen and bathrooms, but with the addition of clothing drying rooms, offices and an education centre. At 222 square metres it is the size of a four bedroom house and has the appearance of a house from the road as well.’ The whole project took 11 months from concept to completion – the same amount of time as a conventional residential home. “Fish & Game are delighted with the building and the way it reflects the very essence of their work in the environment.”

Advocating a shift from cows to cannabis for Drinkable Rivers, Michael’s mission is to enable every Kiwi to eat three tablespoons of hemp seeds daily for health, the environment and the economy. “Hemp – low THC cannabis – really matters for New Zealand.” Abe Gray, Botanist and Science Communicator with 20 years’ cannabis industry experience, established Dunedin’s Whakamana Cannabis Museum in 2013. He says he is confident of the venture’s success. “The demand for cannabis education experiences is exploding globally as this industry expands exponentially and New Zealand is no exception,” he says. “Cannabis is widely misunderstood in New Zealand. People forget that it has been used in some cultures for thousands of years. It used to be the number one industrial crop globally, and was legal in this country less than a hundred years ago.” Whakamana will also establish a public Cannabis Education Centre of Excellence, with freely available educational, fun experiences about cannabis ‘plant power’ and pioneering uses for cannabis as a viable, sustainable food and fibre source. The medical profession will have access to
cutting-edge research and accredited courses for knowledge advancement in medicinal cannabis use. Michael and Abe have begun leasing Shand’s for five months as a base for their PledgeMe crowdfunding campaign, holding information and cannabis educational evenings with a different focus each night. This is to raise $1 million or more to transform Trinity Church into the cannabis educational experience. Once funds have been raised, the Trinity building reinstatement for the café, shot bar and emporium can then open. Whakamana’s social purpose is to improve lives and restore the planet through plant power – to be the trusted source of cannabis education, research and development. Michael and Abe express immense gratitude to the trustees of the Christchurch Historic Trust for their wonderful job restoring the landmarks, and say their history will be acknowledged, with a new life as an institute dedicated to earth’s most versatile vegetable - a befitting next chapter for these 150-year-old icons. hakamana, the New Zealand Institute of Cannabis Education, Research and Development, will be based in the enchanting Shands Emporium – the city’s oldest commercial wooden building – and also the historic Trinity Church. Restored by the Christchurch Historic Trust, the buildings sit adjacent on the Worcester and Manchester Street corner. Hemp environmentalist Michael Mayell, founder of Cookie Time, Nutrient Rescue and Drinkable Rivers, has teamed up with veteran cannabis educator Abe Gray, after meeting at the inaugural iHemp Summit in Wellington last year. Whakamana will incorporate an interactive world-class cannabis museum and education centre, a hemp food café and restaurant, an alcohol-free plantmedicine shot bar, a hemp emporium - and, subject to the outcome of the 2020 cannabis referendum, a cannabis dispensary. The facilities will be built once a $1 million PledgeMe crowdfunding campaign is completed. Social entrepreneur Michael Mayell is excited by the venture. “This will be a facility that Christchurch will be proud of, an avant-garde attraction for locals and tourists alike – cannabis tourism is on the rise,” he says.

AFFORDABILITY AND THE CULTURE TRAP By Linetype Architectural Architect Ben Brady
When it comes to houses, there are certain ergonomic features that make a space function, but it’s hard to argue for a need when spaces get larger than necessity dictates. However, strip a design back to necessity and we might be disappointed with what we are presented.
T
herefore, it’s important to recognise we have cultural values overlying some basic needs that tell us when a space is adequate or not. I suspect that growing up in a colony, where land was once cheap and stretching one’s legs caused no harm, has bequeathed a luxurious
expectation of space that is hard to extinguish. Of the prince and the pauper, the pauper seemed to have it good, but when life is going in the other direction, it causes much more angst. This kind of lifestyle has gone unchallenged for several generations but is increasingly coming under scrutiny: climate change; urban sprawl; affordability. If I’m honest, I struggle with an internal conflict that recognises these factors but still wants a generosity of space. Perhaps it is just a matter of me, and New Zealand culture, naturally growing up from that colonist mentality. Commute distances will cause us to value the density of cities and that value will supersede the one of space. The trouble is that the process doesn’t happen uniformly. Plus it happens slowly, and time is not on our side. The temptation may always be there to look to your neighbour with twice as much space. If you are building, challenge yourself. Big is not better, enough is enough.

A lot of people neglect decking when building or renovating their homes, but it’s amazing how much style and function is added to your outdoor living area by the introduction of a well thought out deck, not to mention the value it adds to your property. Deckadence knows how to do this better than any other, which
is why if you want a deck of your own, they should be your first port of call. With a dedicated team of professionals and access to CanForm’s internal systems and top subcontractors, Deckadence have the capacity to take an idea and create something unique and costeffective. For hill-based properties, there is no equal. They have designed and built decks where people never thought possible. In fact during the earthquakes, those decks held up several properties. In addition to single and multi-level decks, and the usual pergolas, staircases, railing and seating, Deckadence builds distinct outdoor living areas such as children’s play areas, pool and hot tub surrounds and BBQ areas. They also build turning bays, jetties and art studios. Deckadence owner Simon Geary is involved in the design, and as construction manager makes sure the job is completed exactly as planned. As Simon says, “Want something special? We can do it for you”.

Matt Harris says. Furthermore, Babbage’s sister company Bioresearches is a specialist ecology and environmental consultancy. With the introduction of building surveying, Babbage is also supplying assistance to the commercial real estate sector, property investors, owners and body corporates. By undertaking pre-purchase due-diligence assessments, facility management reviews and long-term maintenance plans, Babbage mitigates client property land acquisition and disposal risk, including providing advice regarding commercial lease negotiation and review. The team’s integrated valueadded design philosophy is
apparent in the high-end 1,417m2 Belfast Terrace development which overlooks central Queenstown. The successful delivery of the nearly completed Hyundai showroom on Christchurch’s Durham Street also illustrates Babbage’s ‘single point of contact’ formula, prioritising the ability to talk directly to the senior staff involved on each venture. The personal touch means not only happy retained and repeat clients, but key staff as well, which Babbage recognises ensures continuity of relationship management and strong sector knowledge. Iconic building stands strong
In the heart of the new city, overlooking the renewed Ōtākaro Avon River precinct, The Public Trust Building is being restored to its former glory and strengthened for future generations.
B
ox 112 is preserving the iconic building which has graced the Canterbury streetscape for almost 95 years. The team at Box 112 is renowned for restoring heritage buildings with all the respect they deserve – the Public Trust Building stands as a fine example. Every historic detail of this landmark has been considered and respected, enhancing the architecture and feel of the Canterbury icon that encapsulates the roaring twenties. Built in 1925 for the Public Trust, 152 Oxford Terrace was designed by one of Christchurch’s most celebrated architects, Cecil Wood. Wood drew international inspiration for this bold and grand design after a trip to New York during the skyscraper boom of the 1920s. With such inspiration, it’s not surprising that the building’s entrance is a masterpiece, and will have steps leading into what could
easily be the middle of the Manhattan, via its stunning timber revolving door (saved from the original 1919 PGG building) and into the grand 6m high marble lobby. The impressively oversized steel-framed windows, the original steel-caged elevator, cornice detailing and its feature façade – soon to be restored to its original colour – express a timeless architectural masterpiece. Property developer Box 112 spokesperson James Stringer says, “Christchurch City Council have shown tremendous civic leadership in their joint desire to support these important projects. In a time where they are being called on for funds from many angles, it is deeply encouraging to see them acknowledge the importance of these structures in telling the story of Ōtākaro to the world and to Canterbury’s future generations.” Awarded in 2017, The Landmark Heritage

Grant of $1.9m enabled immediate strengthening works and protection of key heritage features to be undertaken. The building’s strengthening project is now complete. Box 112 has now commenced the second stage of construction, involving the carpentry, fit-out and aesthetic refurbishment. Completion and the opening are scheduled for early 2020. “We want the people of Christchurch to have a chance to appreciate the beauty of this historic building,” James says. The Public Trust Building was designed to portray strength and stability to the people of Christchurch. At the time of its original completion, almost 100 years ago, another local and celebrated architect Hurst Seager said of its design “it strikes a new note in Christchurch”. It’s seemingly fitting, and the same can be said of the city’s icon, entering the new ‘20s – almost a century on. Vibrant hospitality and professional services are set make this iconic site home. Francesca Voza will bring the basement to life with a Rome-inspired jazz and cocktail bar, adorned with the original 1920s safety deposit boxes. Professional recruitment firm Graham Consulting and award-winning strategic advertising and brand agency Novo will both have headquarters here. And for the cherry on the top, a worldclass tapas bar created by Jeremy Stevens will overlook the city – ensuring the building is one for the public to call their own.

phone, then arrange a free visit to the site to look at the area the client wants covered and what they are trying to achieve. Following the site inspection an accurate quote goes to the client, generally within a few days. It takes around four weeks from confirmation to actual on-site work commencing,” Ian says. The Stratco Allure systems’ frame and louvre blades are constructed from specially designed aluminium extrusions to meet with New Zealand’s stringent building code, and all hardware componentry is manufactured to their unique design specifications. The fabrication and powder coating of all components is carried out in
their Christchurch-based factory, prior to transporting to site for installation by Stratco’s highly skilled professional installation team. Because each system is fabricated to order, this ensures versatility for the homeowner (or designer/architect for a new build) to choose whatever colours, size and shape they desire to match the overall design approach. The unique control system is composed of a Danish-designed silent LINAK push/ pull hydraulic motor running through a centralised automation control unit. The whole system is simply operated using either of the two remote controls. A standard inclusion in the Stratco Allure package is an Italian-designed Rain Sensor, which closes the louvres when rain falls, thereby keeping outdoor furniture dry. To keep the unit aesthetically pleasing, the entire motor/control system is hidden from view; add in the perfect matching of colour of frame, the operating componentry and surface interface, and the entire unit feels, and looks, totally seamless. “The beauty with louvres is that you get 100 percent control of light throughout summer and winter; especially in winter, when you want that maximum heat to come through,” Ian says, “And the remote control is very easy to use – no mucking around with an umbrella!” Phone 03 338 2829 or visit www.stratco.co.nz.

CUTTING EDGE CANTERBURY SCHOOL
Christchurch’s own HRS Construction Ltd has teamed up with the Ministry of Education to provide students with the most cutting edge new school in Canterbury. Spreydon School’s new site at 50 Hoon Hay Road, Spreydon, has been constructed by HRS Construction and is the first of its kind to be built incorporating BIM technology.
B
IM, or Building Information Modelling, is an intelligent 3D model-based process which gives architects, construction firms and engineers the insight and the tools to better plan and work through the build process. HRS Construction Ltd used this process while working with sub-contractors to bring the vision of Spreydon School to life. Two new learning hubs were constructed and the original classrooms from the previous school, Manning Intermediate, which closed in 2015, were demolished to make way for
new classrooms designed with BIM. The admin building and attached gymnasium/hall were retained and the renovation of this building formed part of the contract. All the latest earthquake strengthening was applied and a new school entrance of Mathers Road was created for greater ease of access. For more information on BIM and how HRS Construction can handle your next building project, big or small, phone 03 338 5194 or visit www.hrsconstruction.co.nz.

Red and Black Construction Ltd needs no introduction to those who recognise quality builds and award-winning craftsmanship in Canterbury. Talking of awards, the company has recently been awarded the highest honours at the 2019 Registered Master Builders Awards for their work on what judges have described as “a haven for the family”.
his haven has been awarded the RMB Gold Award within the $700,000 to $1 million mark in Canterbury. Basically, praise does not come much higher than that. Obviously to be honoured with an award like this, one has to be the best at what they do; such is the case with Red and Black Construction which, as the name suggests, knows the building industry better than almost anyone in Canterbury. Combining the latest building techniques, both indoor and outdoor, Red and
Black Construction’s awardwinning home has to be seen to be believed. With four bedrooms, two bathrooms and separate living areas, there is more than enough room for this busy household. Outdoor living has also been maximised with decks on either side. The house’s foundations were also set slightly higher than normal to give a floating effect.
