reat things come from failure. Walt Disney, Henry Ford and George Foreman join an illustrious list of business greats who have experienced failure and bounced back – better than before. Recent advances in neuroscience have shown us that the brain is far more malleable than we ever thought possible and this may be the key to picking yourself up and dusting yourself off. Noticing some students rebounded while others seemed devastated by even small setbacks, Carol Dweck made studying human motivation her life’s work. She spends her days diving into why some people succeed and some don’t and how much is within our control to foster success. Her theory of the two mindsets and the difference they make in the outcomes is incredibly powerful. Dweck believes there are ‘fixed mindsets’ and ‘growth mindsets’, with success determined almost entirely on simply believing that you can improve. If you believe your qualities are unchangeable — the fixed mindset — you will want to prove that you’re right, rather than ABC AUDITED learning from your mistakes. Those with the growth mindset on the other hand, have a powerful passion for improvement. “We like to think of our champions and idols as superheroes who were born different from us,” Dweck writes in Mindset. “We don’t like to think of them as relatively ordinary people who made themselves extraordinary.” AUDITED This issue we caught up with the brain coach for the All Blacks, Gilbert Enoka, about how we can be high achievers both on and off the field. Enjoy.

AWinning Wonky Donkey By Tracey Edwardes

One down-to-earth Kiwi songwriter and author is proof the universal language of humour is a very catchy beast.

Q

ueenstown-based writer Craig Smith decided, 16 years ago, to leave his marketing career and follow his musical dreams. Then along came a

rather charismatic wonky donkey which set him on the straight path to publishing success. Last month Craig, author of the best-selling book and song

Obama’s autobiography. “Now it’s sold globally - from Portugal to Poland. It really helps that the song is the same as the words in the book - so when English is the second language, you can listen as you read. It’s visual and aural, but also provides a kinaesthetic way for many kids to learn, which is how I learn best.” Craig has performed at many schools, where kids can’t help but jiggle in their seats to their favourite song. “This is the way stories used to be told before print was invented.” The 47-year-old lives between Queenstown and his creative getaway in Monowai near Te Anau, and has spent nearly a decade touring Australia. However, it was Christchurch where he first started singing and performing both his adult and kid’s music. He was even a regular busker at the Riccarton Market. He has invested in land and a home in Lyttleton and visited there last month and stopped and had a beer with fellow musician Marlon Williams. Craig has written nine children’s books so far. On the back of The Wonky Donkey, a book and CD about wonky donkey’s daughter - Dinky Donkey – will be launched worldwide on November 1, and again illustrated by the talented Katz Cowley. Craig gives us a clue: “She’ll be a punky, blinky dinky donkey!”

I want parents to enjoy equally – and get them giggling too!” And speaking of giggling, The Wonky Donkey, and accompanying CD, sold around a million copies worldwide before Scottish granny Janice Clark hijacked the internet with her infectious giggles, while reading the story to her grandson. Craig says his best-selling book had been entertaining children for nine years selling close to a million copies, before sales then went from a trot to a gallop, from last September, selling a further three million copies. “Until this day I can’t stop laughing every time I hear her, even though I know what’s coming. I realise this happened by complete chance - it was real gift. The Wonky Donkey became arguably the number one selling book in the world across all genres for two weeks on Amazon global sales. WORKING CLASS MAN By Melinda Collins

In music, 3.5 minutes is a long time; it’s long enough to find love, lose love, perhaps even find a new love. Nothing nearly as exciting happens in the 3.5 minutes I nervously wait for my call to connect to Jimmy Barnes.

W

hen we do connect, he’s basking in the Australian sun and despite the dismal 15 degrees we’ve got in Christchurch, it doesn’t dampen his excitement about crossing the ditch for his upcoming Shutting Down Your Town Tour, which reaches our city on Thursday 26 September. He’ll be playing all his classic hits – and there’s a lot of them – plus highlights from his acclaimed new album, My Criminal Record, which was released on Friday 31 May. “I always have a great time coming to New Zealand,” Jimmy says. “I’ve been touring there since 1975 and I look forward to getting back there.” It’s also the first rock and roll album he turned his talented hand to in 10 years. “I’ve done a Greatest Hits, two books and I do what I do, but what I enjoy the most is making rock and roll. So I’m really excited.” Born James Dixon in central

Glasgow, Scotland in 1956 before moving to Australia as a five year old, ‘Barnesy’ kicked off his career with Australian rock band Cold Chisel in the 1970s. But the Jimmy of today is a far cry from the Jimmy of 50 years ago. For one, the rocker who was widely believed to drink more than two bottles of vodka a day, much of it during performances, now only takes to the stage under the influence of honey and water! But if demons were inspiration to be transformed into music, then Jimmy’s had plenty to share around – enough to fill five decades of material. And while the demons are still there, it seems now he’s made peace with them. After candidly opening himself up in his two bestselling personal memoirs, Working Class Boy (2016) and Working Class Man (2017) – both of which won the prestigious Australian Book

Industry Award – it would be easy to think that you knew everything there is to know about James Dixon (Jimmy) Barnes. In the early years, there was the abuse, the neglect, the poverty and the family’s alcoholism. In the later years there was the partying, the drugs, the alcohol and, heartbreakingly, the eventual suicide attempt. When Working Class Man was released in 2017, David Free from The Australian described it as a sequel “in the fullest sense of the word”. “Read this one by itself and you will find yourself looking at a cliche: the self-destructive rock star. But the first book lets you know, in pitiless detail, exactly what the self-destroyer was out to destroy. The adult who behaved like a child is explained, in large part, by the child who had to behave like an adult.”

And although the ‘broken’ Jimmy makes up a big part of this ‘new’ Jimmy, he’s not letting it define him. Getting professional help has been “vital” to his recovery, he tells me. “I think that the perfect way would be to alleviate the social problems – the violence, the abuse, the promiscuity, the drugs, the alcohol – that kids are exposed to. But if they are exposed, people think they can deal with it on their own. “For me, seeing a therapist once or twice a week has saved my life. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have made it.” Jimmy has done a lot of work on himself to get to this point – not just to stare down his demons, but to understand them. It’s by sheer miracle he escaped the trauma of his childhood, but he reflects that perhaps he didn’t escape it at all; maybe it’s still there, in his heart. The earliest of his new music

N

was written at the same time as he was writing his memoirs and, although the music is tinged with the trauma of a difficult childhood, it comes from a different place now. Because although he’s been writing about these experiences for years, now that he understands his demons, he’s been able to write about them from a completely unique perspective; he’s eschewed the blame and been able to write objectively. He’s even “cleared stuff that was killing me”. The first lines of the new album – the title track – set the tone for this more understanding Jimmy: “Well I came from a broken home. My mama had a broken heart. And even though she tried to fight it; it was broken from the start.” “One thing I’ve learnt is that

SEEING A THERAPIST ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK HAS SAVED MY LIFE. IF I DIDN’T, I WOULDN’T HAVE MADE IT.”

out & about

no matter what you do or who you are, you have the same demons, the same background, the same troubles,” he explains. “It’s about how you cope with it.” While Working Class Boy and Working Class Man allowed Jimmy to get his story out in hundreds of pages of raw, riveting prose, My Criminal Record does it in around 50 minutes of brawling rock and roll and it’s been described as “one of his finest ever albums”. Family too, have played an integral role in keeping him on the straight and narrow. Wife Jane Mahoney – the daughter of an Australian diplomat who famously left Jimmy and his heady rock’n’roll lifestyle, earning herself a starring role in the song Rising Sun – and their children sing together and play together. “I have thirteen grandchildren now,” Jimmy says. “Family and music are entwined for me. They help with my sanity; they’re the ones that keep me going.” Jimmy’s life has been a rollercoaster ride from the start. But there’s little doubting that he’s at the top of the carnival ride right now – and he plans on staying there!

Beautiful Blooms If we think about it, flowers are the one constant in all of our lives. Flowers are given to celebrate our birth, our birthdays, engagements, weddings and anniversaries; flowers are presented upon our retirement, or as a thank you gift, and flowers are given when we die.

L

eanne Lovell of Victoria Florists has had a love affair with flowers all her life, and of her many years working in the floristry business, she says that it’s in the creating of funeral tributes she’s at her happiest. “Death is part of life; there’s no escaping that. But every life – no matter how short or long – is a life to be commemorated and honoured. Every tribute we make is composed with so much thought and care for that unique individual, and equally for the grieving family and friends.” Compassion has always been Leanne’s first and foremost priority, and in this fragrant, tranquil oasis, there’s plenty going around.

Sometimes, all you need is a wander amongst beautiful blooms and a little conversation with caring hearts to find what you’re looking for. “My team are all very experienced florists, but like me, when they finish work each day, they go home to real families too. They’ve all experienced the lows, highs, joys and sorrows of life. And that is what we bring to every tribute – our understanding of your pain and loss, but most importantly, we bring our love.” Find Victoria Florists at 107 Idris Road, Fendalton. How critical is the mental side of sport? I work as part of a quality management team, so I am just one spoke in the talent management wheel. The mind always gives up before the body, so it’s pretty paramount when it comes to performance. Most people have an understanding that to train they have to sweat, so if they’re not sweating, they’re not training. When they want to improve their strength, they go to the gym three times a week and train for it. The way I see it is, if you want to improve your mental ability when you’re under pressure, why wouldn’t you apply the same principles to give you the ability to perform more consistently in that space? However, it needs to be noted that it is important not to overplay the ‘mental’ hand. It is important that you still do the physical work; you can’t plough a field by turning it over in your mind. Without giving away all your secrets… what are your key strategies when it comes to getting athletes and business people performing at their very best? I think the first thing is to understand that nobody is born with the ability to perform under pressure; it’s learned. There’s not one big secret; rather there’s lots of little skillsets. It’s about understanding the individual and the relationship they have with pressure in a given moment and then enable them to unpick that and give them control when they encounter pressured situations. When you get that level of awareness, you can recognise when you’re in a state that restricts you from peak performance and once you recognise it, you can do something about it. How important is stepping back from the core activity and recharging the batteries? In today’s world, both in sport and business, it’s integral. People get tough by exposing themselves to waves of stress and waves of recovery; it’s how you get resilient. In today’s world you get the stress without the recovery and that’s how you get burnt out. It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it. We want people to schedule

STORM Cruiser

MANGO Foldup Commuter

deliberate recovery activities in your day or in your week, where you get away from the compression of your environment. When you understand that resilience is a set of skills, not a personality type or disposition, then you can become purposeful about things you need to put into your environment to ensure you perform well. How can people take failure and turn it into a positive? It’s purely a mindset thing. It’s about how you view the situations you encounter, the happenings that come upon you as a result and the challenges you have. There’s a saying, ‘it’s good to forget the things that have hurt you, but never forget what they taught you’. I’ve had a lot of experiences in both life and sport that have hurt, but they’ve taught me wonderful lessons. So it’s about what ‘return’ can you get from those experiences should you encounter them again. Failure can then be viewed as a gift that informs future actions and outcomes. It’s about being courageous. Comfort ages you; people search for comfort, but comfort is not the place where great things are achieved. It’s about being courageous and getting out of your comfort zone. Failure through the right lens can ignite things in other areas that can have a really big, positive impact. How excited are you for the Rugby World Cup this year? It is such a privilege to work with this wonderful team; Steve Hanson, Ian Foster, the whole management team, both the men and women in our management team that leave no stone unturned and work exceptionally hard. I often think, if only the country knew just how much work that team puts in. I love firsts, new horizons and things people say can’t be done; this opportunity ticks all those boxes. It rocks my socks! What do the next 12 months have in store for you? Only the master knows that! My focus is on the huge opportunity in the back half of this year and I’m going to continue to work hard delivering my role, along with our magnificent management team. I’m a great believer in fate. I haven’t chased opportunities. I feel I’ve been where I’ve needed to be when I’ve needed to be there and that’s kept me with this magnificent team for 19 years, which is such a privilege. My responsibility right now is to do my bit to continue to enhance this great legacy and deal with what’s in front of me. What happens after that will present itself in due course.

What attracted you to sports psychology? I’m a self-confessed sportaholic. My first dabble into sport was volleyball; I became a player and then a coach, representing New Zealand for 10 years in the game. It gave me the drive to get better, both for myself as a player and for the greater team, which led me to the mind space and recognising that the brain can inhibit performance and fuelled my interest in the people side of sport.

lane. Inside, the 50s-style afternoon tea and ice creams did not receive the attention they merited, with residents and their families, friends and staff more interested in jiving, lindy hopping or even jitterbugging to band Sharvelle who kept the 50s and 60s hits coming. “It was the perfect era, with one of our gentlemen saying ‘I thought my rock ‘n’ roll days were over, I’m so thrilled to do it again!’” Donna says. Another month, a pets theme saw staff and families bring their pets to visit and residents have fun with dog washing! Pets are always welcome though. “We don’t expect visiting family to leave their four-footed friends at home,” Donna says. “Our residents love the opportunity to meet family pets.” Activities also extend far beyond the borders of the Village, with recent trips to Sumner for a fish and chip lunch, The Groynes, The Birches and the new Central Library to experience the virtual reality technology. Currently there are vacancies at the village, contact Donna on 03 351 0974 for details.

That culture is one of the criteria for the LINK Spirit Award along with achieving exceptional results, living and breathing the brand and having fun. “To have ticked all those boxes was amazing, but for me the key to our success is the right culture,” Katherine says. “That is what I set out to establish from the outset when joining the team. We worked on putting in place goals for individuals

and for the whole team, as well as making sure we have fun outside of the work environment.” All that hard work has certainly paid off not only with the LINK Spirit Award, but also in the indisputable fact that the local office won the international Most Improved Office Award, based on revenue – a huge 125 percent increase over the previous 12 month period. “We have made a great start and from here on we will continue to build on our passion for bringing businesses and purchasers together.”

Solid Business Growth

Chartered Accountant Peter Eastmure is proud of the boutique accountancy firm he has spent over ten years building. It’s the kind of firm that is tailor made for the SME. Relationships are central to the success of any business and this is true of Eastmure & Associates, and its clients’ businesses.

O

wning and operating any business is a timeconsuming, complicated, and sometimes daunting endeavour. Often, questions and challenges arise that demand an immediate, even if simple, response. Peter is nearly always only an email or text away. Simple matters can be dealt with quickly, or a meeting can be arranged. His open-door policy at the Hazeldean Road, Addington office with plenty of parking means your business keeps running smoothly. “We intend to remain a small,

approachable firm,” Peter says. “When you get too big it’s easy to lose that client interaction.” There are no extra charges for such interactions, meetings, or travel. That peace of mind is vital to the relationships Peter likes to build, and the businesses he and his team help grow. “We do lots of compliance work for SMEs, for a whole range of clients, but we’re focusing on the business growth aspect because the accounting profession is changing. Clients want more from their accountant. They don’t just

want to know what happened 12 months ago and how much tax they have to pay. They want to know what’s happening now, and last month, and the projections for going forward. “Some clients just want their tax done, but others may, for example, want to sell their business in five to ten years and realise now’s the time to make some changes such as keeping track of performance and setting targets. Prospective purchasers will want to see five years of accounts with steady growth.”

Eastmure’s Business Growth Package looks at all aspects of a business, such as compliance, shareholder agreements, structure, anti-money laundering measures, Companies Office documentation and more, and makes sure they are all in place. Then, together, targets are set and a plan to achieve the targets is devised. “It’s about building that business, that asset, to get the maximum value when they come to sell it, or to give a greater return on their investment while they own it.” Eastmure & Associates is a well-established Christchurch firm with clients nationwide and overseas. Many of its clients have come from referrals. Having the right accountant, where you feel valued and are getting the result you want is a good business decision and with variable fee structures, including a fixed fee which assures no surprises. Using the latest technologies and keeping up with new legislation, dealing with IRD so you don’t have to, and with a network of related professionals – lawyers, insurance and mortgage brokers, financial advisors – Peter and his team are always on hand with advice and strategies to grow your business.

We have costumes, sets, and special effects.”

Atlas says that each different Lloyd Webber musical has been tied into vignettes. “For instance, we’ve two songs from CATS, two from Whistle Down the Wind, three from Joseph, three from The Phantom of the Opera, three from Jesus Christ Superstar and so on. Within each vignette, we’ve created these mini-stories.” The Canterbury Symphony Orchestra

brings a full 33-piece orchestra onstage – not the usual pit orchestra of 14. This is a first partnering between Showbiz Christchurch and the CSO. “To be able to work directly with the CSO and have that quality of music is fantastic!” Atlas says. “We’ve got this opulent orchestra; we’ve Maestro Marrett conducting; we’ve beautiful sound and lighting design, and our set designer, David Bosworth, has come up with a beautiful asymmetrical set, which is unique. It will be gorgeous!” Atlas agrees that Showbiz Christchurch has a growing reputation for producing shows of the highest calibre. “Absolutely. Showbiz does musical theatre at an extraordinary level. I saw Wicked at the West End and I remember watching it here and thinking that the whole physical production – the singing, the storytelling… well, I’ve seen good shows, but Showbiz’s production of Wicked was on par with, if not better than, what can be seen on Broadway!” Born in San Francisco, Atlas was a professional performer and operatic soloist for thirty years, working in Italy, England and ten years on Broadway. His original training was in stage direction and conducting. He retired from singing in 2007 and, in 2009, came to New Zealand to start a family with his Kiwi wife, opera singer Amanda Atlas. One of the highlights of this concert for Atlas is not only that Amanda is reprising her character role from last year, (from Sunset Boulevard) but also that their nine-year-old daughter, Katya, performs in the children’s chorus – her Showbiz Christchurch debut performance. It’s good news for Christchurch theatre, then, that Atlas is here to stay. “You’re stuck with me, whether you like it or not,” he laughs, “I keep saying to my wife that if I’m not having fun, I’ll stop doing it. But I’m having fun!”

Perhaps you’re ready to embrace winter with a ‘cool’ new palette or you’re yearning for some warmth – either way, we think any excuse for an update is a good one! We’ve pulled together some head-turners just for you.

1. Ice Ice Baby: Already blonde? Why not embrace winter and change things up with a cool new ‘ice blonde’ makeover? Or you could take it to the next level and try out life as a silver siren.

2. Dark Dimension: Brown needn’t be boring! Layers of light and darker chestnut tones is a great way to create depth and dimension… it’s what all hair dreams are made of.

Black Velvet: You don’t have to go outrageous with the colour to make a statement. A long, dark mane can work for most skin tones and it’s the look to rock in winter after all, black really is the new black.

Sweet like honey: Warm honey blonde or caramel tones are a beautiful way to warm up your winter. Get the colour balayaged in and you might make it right through winter before you have to head back to the salon!

Red Hot: Red hair is one of the easiest to achieve for both light and dark hair. It’s a beautiful burst of warm colour that will bring life to your winter wardrobe. Not ready to go fully bright-red? Start with a light auburn and work your way up.

At Akaroa on the Beach we have three Akaroa waterfront apartments in a tranquil setting, each with spectacular views of Akaroa harbour. Wrap Up By Clementine Page

Hair accessories are picking up the pace as one of 2019’s biggest street-style trends; satin headbands, statement barrettes, velvet scrunchies… and now headwraps and headscarves are emerging as the hottest (and most versatile) hair accessory of the year – just ask Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Versace or Tom Ford – and it appears they’re delighting the inner bohemian babe in all of us.

Whatever look you’re rocking, there’s countless no-fuss ways to style these babies; we’ve done some research to get you started. For that 9-to-5 look that’s also completely dinner date appropriate, twist hair into a loose bun and secure with bobby pins. Whether we want to accept it or not, Games of Thrones is over and winter is coming! As dark mornings and cold nights greet us, it’s time to adjust our wardrobes accordingly. Converting from autumn to winter wear, especially in the Garden City, can be tricky. One day you may need to embrace a coat and the next day, a knit jumper may suffice. So, if you haven’t already got your winter wardrobe organised, Kayte John is here to fill you in on how to make the seasonal switch.

Update

3. 4.

Take a browse – before you buy, go online and look at your favourite stores and view their latest winter collection. See what styles and trends take your fancy and begin scouting the best and most cost-effective version of each item online. You can even ‘get thrifty’ as Christchurch has an abundance of opportunity stores like The Recycle Boutique, Mīhana – recently opened by The Christchurch City Mission and located in the Boxed Quarter, as well as consignment stores like Style Me which can be found at 304 Selwyn Street. Four seasons in one day – Christchurch is notorious for being warm one day and then bitterly cold the next - so we should take advantage of this! Instead of packing away your spring and summer clothes, look at what could be crossed over and efficiently used for all seasons. For example, a midi dress could be paired with tights and a jacket. Using this method will ensure you get full potential and more wear out of your wardrobe. Invest in key pieces – we all know that winter clothes can be more expensive. So, to ease your wardrobe and your wallet into winter, invest in a few key pieces that you can style with items you already have. Investing in good quality items like boots, coats and bags is always a good idea as they will see you through this winter and the next! However, don’t forget to replace your basics for convenience and practicality. Pick a neutral colour palette for your basics such as blacks, greys and nudes, which allows for optimal mixing and matching. However, if you want to add a splash of colour then think khaki, magenta, maroon and red, or trending patterns such as leopard print.

Kondo convert – you knew this was coming, right? There is no better way to make space and to evaluate everything you own than going through your wardrobe methodically, piece-by-piece. If you’ve been watching the Marie Kondo series Tidying Up on Netflix, you’ll be familiar with this method of decluttering. Go through your clothes and sell or donate anything that hasn’t been worn in the last 12 months, or no longer fits you. Kondo believes the best way to choose whether or not to keep something is to hold each item in your hands and decide whether it sparks joy. Choosing items this way means that after you finish decluttering, you will only be surrounded with items that make you happy!

You know how your grandma said to take care of your possessions so they last a lifetime? Well your skin is no different. For all of winter’s seasonal highlights – hitting the slopes, snuggling by the fire, chunky knit throws and spiced mulled wine – the downside is the drying effect it has on our skin. So, while winter is the time to update your wardrobe, it’s also the time to update your skincare regime. We’ve pulled together some top tips for looking after your skin throughout the cool months of winter.

1. Our skin is the barrier that keeps water inside of our bodies. When it is dry and cold, that water is able to evaporate off the surface faster and easier. So throwing back an extra glass or two of water each day over the cooler months can help restore the moisture in your skin.

2.

It may seem like common sense, but moisturising is the first step to keeping skin hydrated throughout winter. So invest in the best. This is one time when quality really does trump quantity. Body oils are also a great option, as they can create a barrier before having a warm bath to prevent skin from drying out.

3.

While it’s tempting to get home on a cold day and jump into a hot shower, taking hot showers and not immediately moisturising after can result in small cracks in the surface of the skin which expose the skin nerves to air, creating what’s known as ‘winter’s itch’; dry, itchy and irritated skin that can feel like eczema. If you do have a hot shower, lather on the moisturiser while the room is still nice and steamy.

4.

This is one time of the year when it’s OK to chill on the exfoliation routine. Too much exfoliating during the winter months when it is cold and dry can compromise your skin’s barrier.

5.

Cleanse gently. Harsh cleansers can strip away natural oils, leaving your skin exposed. Cream-based cleansers, preferably with moisturising attributes, will remove the day’s dirt and makeup while keeping the moisture in.

6.

Slapping on sunscreen in winter may seem like the last thing on your mind, but sunscreen is just as important during winter to protect skin from those harmful UV rays – especially in New Zealand. Opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF30 and if you’re heading up the slopes, make sure you reapply every two hours – or immediately after heavily sweating.

Crochet craze From tops and frilly dresses to bags and shoes, crochet is appearing on runways all over the globe as designers take this delicately detailed textile from beach cover-up to high fashion favourite. Not only reserved for that summery soirée, this woven material can be styled up or down; opt for the ultrahippy look (think crochet crop and bell bottoms) or slip into a more luxe outfit (a crochet cardigan, midi skirt and heeled boots) – or better yet, go crochet crazy and don yourself in a crochet maxi, jumpsuit or knee length cardi.

cleanser, a toner, and a facial scrub is in the making. The products are affordably priced and handmade in small batches. Unlike in most products the first ingredient is not water but flower water – the end product of the distillation of making essential oils, meaning that 100 percent of each product is therapeutically beneficial. The scent of the natural oils used, such as manuka, sweet orange blossom and ylang ylang, have proved irresistible, and “positive feedback about the brand through word of mouth from existing customers has created steady growth for the business,” Amanda says. A practicing nurse with Diplomas in Aromatherapy, Organic Skincare Formulation, and working towards a Certificate in Herbal Medicine, Amanda loves the process, “starting from the beginning with the basics, to create something beautiful, natural and beneficial”. CREATING LUSH LASHE By Melinda Collins

It’s been said that eyes without lashes are like cake without frosting. Such is our lust for lashes, that we’ve primped, preened, painted and permed them since almost the beginning of time. Although the evolutionary story of how eyelashes came to be is less than glamorous, their future is certainly looking lush – particularly at the talented hand of Keren Clayton.

T

he Lash Kandy founder is already well-known in North Canterbury for providing high-end, bespoke lash extensions; now she’s thrown open the doors of her high-end eyelash boutique at 135 High Street in Rangiora. And, although it may be hard to picture the glamorous local is a country girl at heart - living on a farm and also working within the dairy industry! At Lash Kandy, every single one of your natural eyelashes gets to find its perfect partner, with Keren’s practiced hand attaching a longer, more shapely extension to every single one, for a beautiful, natural look. If you opt for a volume – or even a mega volume – set, you can get from 3 to 16 lashes for every single one of your natural lashes! “A lot of women are scared to get

extensions because they don’t want the huge, big, false looking lashes,” Keren explains. “We create a bespoke set of lashes for every client, to look as natural or as full as they want.” What makes this VIP treatment so VIP is the technique. Where some lash artists will add too much glue to your natural lashes and not isolate the eyelashes, they can prove itchy, uncomfortable and even damaging to your lashes or eyes. For Lash Kandy, eye health is a top priority; they use only medical grade products and Keren has been trained by the best – the global best, that is. She has invested heavily in training, with one on one training in the UK with internationally recognised Eyelash Excellence. She’s even got plans to become an internationally recognised

Eyelash Excellence Trainer, where she will be ‘training the trainers’. Meanwhile, her daughter Kezia has caught the lash lush bug too and is undergoing training. Extension maintenance is ideal from 2-3 weeks, as our natural lashes fall out at a rate of 3-5 every day. But at Lash Kandy, the online booking system makes scheduling easy. If growth is an issue, Keren will help you stock up on growth serums and she also does lash lifts if you want to go more natural, with the lift generally lasting from 6-8 weeks. “Some people live for lashes. They’ll forego their hair appointments, their nail appointments and their skin appointments. But that’s OK because when you wake up and look in the mirror, you feel like a million dollars, whether you’re 18 or 60!”

Shell yeah! Unleash your inner beach babe this cold season by rocking some sweet little shells. Colourful renditions of these beauties hit the runway this season, as did shells set in plated gold. An array of necklaces, rings, earrings and hair accessories are featuring petite cowries, puka shells and gold sculptural pieces shaped like seashells. It’s enough to make even mermaids swoon! Heavy metal Both vintage and modern chains will forever remain a jewellery box staple. This year chunky, oversized chain-link necklaces are the hottest look, with bold and gold proving particularly popular, but chains of all shapes and sizes are making their well-deserved appearance on the runways of 2019. Feeling fancy? Layer it up with several chains of varying sizes and lengths. Dripping crystals The blinged-out ‘chandelier’ trend is getting both a modern makeover and a vintage revival this year, with glittering bracelets, earrings and necklaces everywhere from the runway to the red carpet. Elevate a polished updo with some cascading crystal earrings, and if you’re feeling bold, deck your neck with strands of bedazzling diamonds. Mother of pearl These precious stones ruled the accessory scene back in the 50s, and it appears they’re rising through the ranks once again. A cute set of pearl earrings is enough to complete any 9-to-5 outfit and speaks sleek sophistication. Delicate baby pearls or daring baubles - either way, you’ll steal the show. Heads or tails? Coin necklaces were spotted swinging down the runway this year – some styles featured a single, thick chain, while others stacked up piles of chains featuring vintage pennies and antique-style medallions. Coin bracelets, rings and earrings are also in the spotlight this year, and are versatile pieces that add that extra statement to a more classic outfit.

Better to

treat osteoporosis than ignore it

With safe and effective treatments now available for osteoporosis, people with the condition should make sure it is treated so that they can stay strong and well, according to Oxford Women’s Health Endocrinologist Anna Fenton.

“O

ften people try and turn a blind eye to it, even when they know they have reduced bone density, because they feel it is a natural part of ageing or nothing can be done to change it,” she says. As an endocrinologist, Anna diagnoses and treats hormone problems and the conditions that can arise from them. Osteoporosis is of particular interest to her. She has served on the board of Osteoporosis New Zealand and is currently the clinical leader for the Canterbury District Health Board Bone Density Service. Osteoporosis can result in chronic pain; loss of height, functionality and self-esteem; a rounded back (dorsal kyphosis); anxiety; and depression. Bone fractures can also have life-threatening consequences for people. “It’s so important that individuals, their whānau and medical practitioners care about the impact of osteoporosis. Fifty-six percent of women and 29 percent of men will suffer a fracture after the age of 60 because of it,” Anna says. “Of those with hip

fractures, 20 percent will die within a year from fracture-related complications.” Access to bone density testing means it is possible for medical practitioners to readily identify those at risk and to individualise treatment. “There have been wonderful advances in tests for bone density, the understanding of oestrogen and testosterone depletion, and medical treatments. This means we can develop an individual approach to treatment. For some people, drug intake can be minimised with minimal or no side effects, but with significant benefits in reducing the risk of fracture,” Anna says. “Getting tested or treated can make such a difference to your ability to function, but more than that, to live life well.” Anna also encourages people to reduce their risk of osteoporosis by stopping excessive coffee or alcohol intake; not smoking; including calcium and vitamin D in their diet; regular exercise with some weight-bearing included; and reducing hazards or installing stability and mobility aids around the home.

Fact file:

1.

2.

Nearly 20 percent of people with hip fractures die from fracture-related complications within a year, and men fare worse than women. In addition to the 20 percent of people who die within a year of their hip fracture, one third never return home, and those that do often lose their mobility and independence. More women are hospitalised with a hip fracture due to osteoporosis than through breast cancer.

3.

More than 3,000 New Zealanders break a hip each year. This figure is expected to rise to more than 5,000 as our population ages.

4.

The estimated cost of osteoporosis to New Zealand is $1.1 billion each year.

5.

Osteoporosis can affect men and women of all ages. Metropol June 6, 2019 45

hat’s the feeling of the residents of Merivale Retirement’s striking new facility on Somme Street. Designed by Marc Barron of Jerram Tocker Barron Architects and built by Jones and Wyatt Construction, the building exudes the elegance and sophistication one associates with a luxury hotel. Yet it is so comfortable and tastefully decorated with soft furnishings in its lounges and private rooms that you feel right at home. Open since April, the twostorey main building surrounds

a spacious tranquil courtyard beautifully landscaped by Ben McMaster of InsideOut Design. The view of the courtyard is a focal point for many of the rooms and apartments within the village. Upon entering this stunning facility is a café that could grace any hotel lobby. It’s a space that has quickly become very popular with residents for catching up with one another or for meeting in a vibrant environment with family and friends. The large, light and airy reception area flows through to a lovely boutique hair salon, a

choice of lounge areas and the charming and cosy lounge bar called Stokesy’s with its own courtyard and barbeque area, while the library is a delightful place to relax and read. The ground floor boasts 22 gorgeous one-bedroom serviced apartments. Every apartment includes ensuites, cooking facilities, central heating, as well as 24-hour emergency call buttons for nurse support. Each has its own private patio for outdoor living. These luxurious “License to Occupy” apartments are ideal for residents who may require

some support, but who like a little more space. The open and airy communal lounge and a dining room on the first floor flow through to generous dual purpose ensuited rest home and hospital rooms. Entertainment and activities add to the lively, welcoming atmosphere. Every level of care is provided for in the new facility from fully supported to semi-independent living. Merivale Retirement Village is renowned for its quality clinical care by fully trained and dedicated staff, ensuring residents receive the specialised attention they need. Kombucha Kick By Clementine Page

Kombucha: you either love it or you don’t – but if you do, you’ll be stoked to hear that this tingling tonic will continue to tickle taste-buds in 2019. We look at why the world is going crazy with kombucha cravings.

C

lean eating is fast becoming fashionable, and consequently fermented foods

and beverages are making their well-deserved appearance on our supermarket shelves. Even

though its roots go back to two millenniums ago, kombucha began to gain tremendous

traction in the world of food and beverage in 2017, seemingly yet another hipster fad seeking attention. But the tart, tangy drink has held its place as a well-liked magical elixir and this year we’re expecting to see several kombucha-infused products; kombucha coffee, cocktails, ice cream… even baked goods are getting a hit of kombucha. Long story short, kombucha is made by introducing a ‘symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast’, commonly known as SCOBY or ‘mother’, into a solution of brewed black or green tea and sugar. Once the mix ferments, fruit, herbs and spices can then be added for a second fermentation to flavour the drink. It’s totally trendy to brew your own, but there are a ton of creative, tongue-tingling flavours popping up all over the shop. Full to the brim with ‘live’ bacteria, kombucha is a probiotic-rich beverage praised for its health-promoting effects on the digestive and immune systems. It’s jam-packed with B vitamins, which are essential for energy and other bodily functions like cell growth and metabolism, and it’s relatively low in calories, so you can sit back and swill to your heart’s delight!

Salted Butterscotch JAZZ Apple Crumble

I’ve partnered with the team at JAZZ Apples to create an incredibly simple oaty butterscotch and apple crumble.

N

ew season JAZZ Apples are grown in sun-drenched Nelson and Hawkes Bay orchards creating a tangy-sweet flavour that cuts through the caramel

for a not-too-sweet (but rich) dessert. I’ve cheated and used store bought caramel but you could equally make your own using brown sugar and butter.

Ingredients Topping ingredients: 1⁄2 cup flour 1⁄4 cup brown sugar Pinch of sea salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon 100g cold butter, cubed 1⁄2 cup rolled oats

Filling ingredients: 6 JAZZ Apples, peeled, cored and chopped 2⁄3 cup caramel (I used Highlander caramel) Pinch of sea salt 30g butter, chopped

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. 2. For the topping, combine the flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. 3. Add the butter cubes and rub into dry ingredients to resemble breadcrumbs. 4. Stir in the oats, then set aside in a fridge while you cut the apples. 5. Toss the chopped apples well

with the caramel sauce and salt. 6. Split the mixture between 4-6 ramekins, top each with a knob of butter then sprinkle the oaty topping evenly all over each. 7. Bake for 40-50 minutes until the apples are bubbling and the crumble is golden brown. 8. Serve with lots of ice cream.

Spending time in the kitchen is one of my favourite things.” Elora has turned her talented hand to creating recipes and you can find a wide range of these on her website www.theshrinkingviolet.co.nz. You’ll find a range of recipes so divine you’ll struggle to believe they’re all healthy – from decadent and cleverly named Strawberry N’Ice Cream with a Chocolate Shell made from strawberries and bananas, to her paleo, keto and dairy-free White Chocolate Coconut Fudge. We’ve got her recipe for two unique ways of making Keto Peanut Butter Blondies on page 54. Aiming for high fat and high protein, Elora’s favourite way to start the day is eggs, bacon and spinach and she’s a sucker for a Sunday roast. “Taking the time to plan and prepare foods is critical,” she explains. “The single biggest key to success is being organised and planning ahead. “It’s crazy to think that I have created a business that has helped thousands of women; that something I have done for myself has had the power to make such a difference for so many.”

he Christchurch-born beauty was just 19 years old when health concerns related to her weight started her on a journey that would change her life – and that of many others. A captive audience has followed her journey, a journey which has food at its very core. “There’s just no doubt in my mind that food is 100 percent the key to good health and integral if weight loss is your goal,” she says. Elora’s recipe for success? Paleo. Today the wellness and lifestyle blogger runs two Facebook weight loss support groups, speaks in seminars around New Zealand and has partnered with Behavioural Nutritionist, Sara Evans, to provide the 10 Week Challenge, mentoring women on their weight loss journeys. Passionate about the low carb, high fat way of eating, Elora has also launched Nourish and Thrive, a business which has health and wholefoods at its commercial heart. “It’s about making health foods more accessible and affordable,” she explains. “I am first and foremost a foodie! INSTRUCTIONS 1. 2.

Add coconut oil, coconut cream, erythritol and peanut butter to a large bowl and whisk until thoroughly combined. I used my new KitchenAid with the paddle attachment.

3.

Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each until completely incorporated. Add vanilla.

4.

Add the almond flour, salt and baking powder and mix again until completely incorporated. Here you will either mix in your chocolate chips, or set the mixture aside and prepare your “jam.” Alternatively if you are using the Barkers Spreadable Fruit, you can now pour your mixture into the prepared pan and dollop this on top of your blondie mix, using the back of a spoon to swirl it into the top of your blondie.

5.

If making the jam, place the berries in a bowl and microwave for a minute. Using a fork, squish the berries until they form a paste with their juice. If they have too much liquid, simply pour some off. Spread these across the top of your blondie mixture.

6.

Once you’ve decided which option to go for (they’re ALL amazing!), place your blondie into the oven to bake for 2025 minutes, until the centre is just set. This varies a lot from oven to oven, so when you make them the first time, start checking from 15 minutes onwards. They will continue to cook slightly once removed from the oven.

7.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely. Cut into 16 pieces and store in an airtight container. These also freeze really well!

Keto Peanut Butter Blondies T WO WAYS!

Every time I go keto, I always want a sweet fix at some point. Over the years I’ve really tried it all! But this delicious recipe ticks so many of the boxes. I feel like it’s pretty hard to get it wrong when you’re combining peanut butter

and chocolate. Or peanut butter and jam – but that’s my personal opinion.

INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted 1 tbsp coconut cream 1/2 cup Erythritol (I get mine from Nourish & Thrive) 130g smooth peanut butter (I use Pics) 2 eggs at room temperature 2 tsp vanilla extract 130g almond flour (again, I get mine from Nourish & Thrive) 54 June 6, 2019 Metropol

Pinch of salt 3/4 tsp baking powder Either: 1/2 cup 70% dark chocolate chips (I use 70% dark chocolate chips from Nourish & Thrive) OR 1/4 cup mixed berries, frozen OR 2 tbsp Barkers Spreadable Fruit (It’s refined sugar free!)

Preheat your oven to 180°C. Line a square brownie tin with baking paper. Set aside.

Scarborough’s hidden gem At the end of the Christchurch coastal pathway, Ocean Café and Bar is a true hidden gem. Park your car in Ferrymead, Redcliffs or Sumner Village, stroll along the esplanade towards Scarborough Hill, and there it is.

D

on’t let the weather deter you from discovering Ocean’s delicious food, service and welcoming atmosphere, says owner Julie Anne Pritchard. “Sumner is stunning on bluebird winter days, and the view of the sea during rough winter weather conditions is beautiful – even when it’s raining. It’s lovely and warm in here, music is playing and the view is just to die for.” Open daily from 8am, Ocean

Café and Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch, a snack and a drink, or tapas. The Brekkie Burger is popular, consisting of a black burger bap, chorizo jam, smoked cheese, fried free range egg, crispy manuka bacon, bratwurst sausage, with sliced tomato, BBQ hollandaise and jalapeños. Jules creates each item on the impressive menu, picking up ideas on her overseas travels. While still offering all the best sellers and traditional dishes such as creamy seafood chowder, she loves to keep up with current food trends. The Ocean Smoothie Bowl is popular with the younger customer base – mixed berry with banana and cashew nut smoothie, maple crunch, crispy coconut chips, fresh banana and chia seeds. Jules says her excellent staff and the unique, secluded location is what keeps her regulars coming back. Visit the café on 147 Esplanade, Sumner (by the Clock Tower), follow on Facebook and phone 03 326 7923.

and exciting new dishes to try, like the Cantonese ‘Old Fire Soup’ selection, the Taichi Seafood Hotpot, and Hofun Noodles. Then, there’s the extensive traditional Dim Sum menu, offering steamed, fried and baked options, as well as Rice Noodle Rolls and Congee. There’s really something for everyone around the table, which ties neatly into Taichi

Restaurant’s philosophy; that food is the perfect bonding tool to bring together people from all cultural backgrounds and beliefs. The restaurant was named by Professor Adam Lam, the Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury. Tai Chi is one of the most complicated concepts in Chinese, but is widely accepted

as the cultural icon representing Chinese beliefs and philosophy. Taichi Restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday for lunch from 11am to 2:30pm and dinner from 5pm until late. Lovingly Restored How do you say thank you to the sweetest, most supportive people you have ever known? This was the dilemma Cassy was facing about what to give her grandparents as a gift for all the years of being there for her.

C

assy, an airline hostess, got in touch with McDonald and Hartshorne Upholstery with the idea of surprising her beloved

grandparents by getting their furniture reupholstered. She had offered to buy them a new lounge suite, but they refused

because they liked their existing one – which is often the case with many people, says Neke McDonald of McDonald and

Hartshorne. “Your current suite, no matter how exhausted it looks, suits the room size and is comfortable for your body type. And a lot of the modern furniture out there is often too big and bulky.” So, it seemed only fitting that reupholstering their existing suite was a great solution. Cassy’s grandparents, Reg and Frances, will have been married for 56 years this October and had purchased their suite about 30 years ago. After a consultation with Keith Hartshorne to select a fabric, their ‘new’ lounge suite was delivered seven working days later and the couple were thrilled with how it turned out. The Christchurch-based re-upholstery team has more than 100 years’ combined industry experience, using both traditional and contemporary methods to transform old or damaged furniture into stunning new statement pieces that will enhance your home. If you’re going to spend money on anything in the bathroom, what are your key investment pieces? Quality stone tiles and tapware. I personally love the Axor Hansgrohe range of tapware; the colours available within the range can match with any look you are trying to achieve. If the freestanding bath is your feature then you may look to invest in this. What are some quick bathroom ‘pick me ups’ if you want to create some simple changes each season? Mirrors; circular, oval, square - anything goes. Consider painting the GIB in your bathroom a different colour, remembering to use a waterbased paint for wet areas. What are some of the hottest bathroom looks you’re seeing this year? Adding a hint of timber, whether it be timber looking tiles, timber vanity or freestanding timber stool beside the bath. White tiles are out. Natural colours and adding feature wallpapers seem to be on trend also. Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd

Small rooms with

big impact It may be one of the smallest rooms in the house, but this tiny room can have a big impact on your overall interior design scheme. Metropol catches up with award-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong from Armstrong Interiors about how to maximise your bathroom’s potential, with or without costing a fortune.

How can a professional – like Armstrong Interiors – help create a space that captures both form and function? When asking us to look at your bathroom design, we will look at all aspects of your needs and expectations within your space. Drawing 3D models will help visualise the layout of the tiles and fixtures; working with colour options and choosing the right tapware and mixers to flow through the rest of your home. We can work with your plumber, builder and electrician and provide them with detailed plans to minimise costly errors.

How can you create a great bathroom on a modest budget? Cleverly pick tiles that can enhance your space. A feature tile on the vanity wall is a nice way to add colour and texture into your design. When visiting your local tile supplier you will see different selections for floor and wall tiles. Be creative.

arlier this year, we launched our ArchiChat Group to provide an informal way for people to meet us and share our love of architecture. It has generated a lot of lively conversation, especially around the topic of community-based housing. Many find the idea really appealing because it connects with the New Zealand dream of small, friendly neighbourhoods where children can play and grow up feeling safe and cared for, and where adults can socialise much more freely than they do in today’s suburbs. The vision also embodies a more sustainable, less wasteful way of life through sharing facilities and common spaces. In Christchurch, a good example of this is the Peterborough Housing Co-operative where a trust is creating a new pocket neighbourhood. It has been fascinating to lead the design of this medium density development over the past three years. On track to be completed in 2020 are 14 single and multi-storey residences and a ‘Common House’, clustered around a large central

outdoor space. Ranging from smaller one-bedroom homes and studios to three- and four-bedroom homes, the houses will all be different and suit a range of occupant typologies. As with any other project, the key to good design has been to understand the values and objectives of the client. In this case, the goal was to create houses that would be private while also encouraging social interaction with neighbours in the shared courtyard and the ‘Common House’. It will be a very child-friendly place with plenty of room for safe play in the outdoors and with cars accommodated separately in off-street parking to one side. There are limited entry points to the development itself, encouraging interaction between occupants as they cross paths. Shared facilities include a laundry at each end of the central courtyard. A ‘Common House’ will be the community’s social hub, comprising a guest room, kitchen, spacious lounge, kids’ space, study space and a teens’ loft. The concept of a development such

as this is to combine private housing with a sense of belonging to something bigger. The options for community housing are fairly limitless and need not simply replicate what has been designed in this particular instance. Other people might approach such a project with a completely different set of values and priorities that would, in turn, shape the final outcome. Our work with the Peterborough Housing Co-operative has certainly sparked a lot of interest and enquiry on how the concept might be applied to other similar housing developments. We are really passionate about the co-housing concept and know that it can be successful in many different forms. We have had many in-depth discussions in the office; could we live in a co-housing community? Who would our neighbours be? What shared facilities and amenities would work best for us? Do you think you could live in a co-housing community? If you are interested in setting up a similar development or want to learn more about co-housing, we want to get to know you! We would like to take ArchiChat ‘on the move’ and meet with groups who have a specific interest in co-housing, so please get in touch so we can bring ArchiChat to you! www.allso.co.nz

Home Hygge By Céline Gibson

Do you remember that scene from The Sound of Music when Maria calms the von Trapp children on a stormy night by singing those immortal words ‘Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens’…?

T

he sentiments behind ‘My Favourite Things’ may well be universal, but the Danish, who consistently top the charts as the happiest people on the planet, have just one word for it – Hygge. Pronounced hoo-guh, this wonderful word was shortlisted in 2016 by the Oxford Dictionary as word of the year. Meik Wiking, author of The Little Book of Hygge, describes

68 June 6, 2019 Metropol

hygge as being consciously cosy; being with people you love, indulging in good foods, feeling gratitude and upholding equality. With winter on the seasonal horizon, what better time to incorporate the warm fuzzies of this concept to your humble abode? Here, then, are a few tips from those happy Scandinavians on how to bring hygge to your home. Burn those candles: the

Danes burn more candles than any other country in Europe. From entertaining friends to a romantic dinner for two, a candlelit room spells ambience with a capital ‘A’. Fill your bathroom with fragrant candles and bathe by candlelight for blissful relaxation. Ramp up the lamps: create a niche space with lamps and lights that are artworks in themselves. Pooled light draws

the eye; it’s a gentle beacon that invites rest and time out. Bring the outdoors indoors: arrange berried sprigs from your garden in an attractive vessel, or place shells, driftwood and other beachcombing finds as focal pieces. Nature’s treasures can be the most beautiful adornment in your home. Books and nooks: we all need our own hyggekrog (nook) to retreat to, whether it be a den, that little space under the stairs, an attic room, or the studio at the end of the garden. Surround your space with books and belongings that you love. Switch off your phone and succumb to the hush of your hyggekrog. Colour it cosy: winter’s the season for spicy coloured kilims and rugs. They look exotic and invoke feelings of warmth and pleasure. Add in seating strewn with textured throws and sumptuous plump cushions, and bring on the chilli chocolate! Fire it up: basking before a crackling fire in a handsome hearth is ultimate hygge heaven! Raise your glass for a toast – “To Hygge!”

Getting winter ready We’re all familiar with the importance of getting your vehicle ready for winter – checking your battery, antifreeze levels, wiper blades and tread – but did you know there are some pretty integral steps that can be done to winterise your humble abode too?

etter yet, get in the pros – they know exactly what to do in their specialist fields to get your home prepped for the negative numbers set to hit the city in a couple of months. Now’s the time to get your heat pumps serviced. The filters fill up with dust which prevents the unit from working at its most efficient. A professional clean out will ensure you get the maximum heat for your dollar. Inspect your windows and doors for leaks. A professional can check the sealings around windows, door frames and other openings and replace where necessary. Clear out your gutters of any debris such as leaves, dirt and sticks. Clogged guttering prevents rain from draining which can force diversion and create leaks. While you’re up there, check the roof, eaves and shingles. If your roof needs attention, give your roofer a call to assist with any repairs and maintenance. Disconnect any garden hoses over winter, drain the remaining water and store in the garage or garden shed for the winter months, preventing damage from water that freezes then expands.

The total kitchen collection The joy of the four seasons is celebrated at Total Food Equipment where Owner Sandra McLay has ensured the store is bright, warm and welcoming on chilly mornings, making it a brilliant place for an extended browse.

T

he winter season calls for slow cooking and you won’t do it better than choosing from the new shipment of French Staub castiron enamelled cocottes or dutch ovens. Cocottes are used for any dish that takes a while to cook. Their weight keeps temperatures even; tight fitting lids keep moisture in and they are able to reach heat levels needed to create a crust or crispiness. A Staub cocotte will make you smile every time you bring it from oven to table,

with hard to resist colourways and fresh, witty designs. There are grenadine pieces the colour of Pinot Noir, pumpkin shaped cocottes in orange, tomatoes in, of course tomato red, and a fish shaped dish in La Mer, a rich teal. You can even celebrate a significant event this year with a cocotte imprinted with the Chinese Year of the Pig, in one of this year’s lucky colours. Every piece is so durable, it comes with a lifetime guarantee. Form meets function perfection in the authentic Japanese Miyabi knife range,

where every knife blade is exceptionally sharp, made from 100 layers of steel that encapsulate the hard core, while the workof-art handles are the traditional D-shaped birchwood. There are ten different knives in the range, including the starter two-pack of Chef and Utility knife which is bound to kick-start a lifelong collecting habit. The genuine Spanish cazuelas bring the essence of rustic feasting to your cooking. The cazuela is a versatile dish that can be used on the stovetop or barbeque and in the oven or microwave. Made from fired clay, glazed inside, cazuelas have been in use for thousands of years. There is a variety of sizes in store, they all keep food hot and even continue the sizzling at the table. Even on a cosy night in, there is such a thing as food smells extending just too far around the house. A must-have product is the Chef’s Candle, which eliminates cooking odours. New Zealand made and 100 percent soy wax, the candles are scented with lemon and vanilla. “It’s amazing how they just absorb everything,” Sandra says. One more reason to celebrate the chill is the start of mulled wine season and making a delicious batch couldn’t be simpler. Simply combine a bottle of red and a cup of orange juice with the sachet of blended spices from Total Food Equipment, heat and you’ve just won winter! THE POWER OF DREAMS

The new dealership for Honda has recently opened on the corner of St Asaph and Montreal Streets, with the ability to showcase the extensive range of cars for anybody’s need in one of Christchurch’s biggest showrooms.

F

rom Formula 1 and Scott Dixon to the trusty Honda Jazz, Honda is an

engineering company focusing on the customer needs with ease and mobility

a priority; quality interiors and connectivity are at the top of their class in well-known models like the Honda Civic, CRV, HRV and my family favourite, the Jazz. These are individual cars for individual drivers. In fact, they are the number one choice in the private market in Canterbury! With a new $7 million building to house both the service department and the premium quality vehicles we’ve come to expect from Honda, it’s worth dropping by to chat with the experts in the field, who also make a pretty good coffee while you take a browse. More than 80 percent of Honda buyers buy another Honda on their next purchase, so if you are one of the many loyal customers, you’ll know why you keep going back. Quality, reliability and service are always good attributes when purchasing a vehicle. “Everyone here at Honda is so proud of our new facility,” Warren Horn from Honda says. “Its quality represents and showcases the brand so well. We welcome all Canterbury residents to view and experience our new premises, whether you’re are a Honda owner or otherwise.” So make sure to drop into the new showroom corner of St Asaph and Montreal and enjoy The Power of Dreams.

It’s our best valued SUV Range ever, offering class-leading space and the latest driver and safety technologies, there’s one to fit every lifestyle. The choice is yours.

ow, there is a new Wrangler on sale at Armstrong Prestige and it’s better than ever, with three models on offer. These range from the entry-level Sports S and the mid-range Overland, to the flagship Rubicon, named in honour of the rugged and tough Rubicon Trail in America. All Wranglers come with the proven 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine which produces 285 HP and 260 foot-pounds of torque. Styling wise, the new Wrangler still retains its iconic seven slot grill, which has adorned all Jeeps since the Jeep of WW2. The new Wrangler is still the only 4WD vehicle available as a convertible. Inside you get an interior with high quality materials and a substantial number of features; more storage, more comfort, more visibility and a quieter ride. Drivers will enjoy the new 6.5-inch Uconnect Touchscreen infotainment system with Satellite Navigation, Bluetooth and Reversing Camera. Safety is also of paramount importance in the new Wrangler with features like Blind Spot Monitoring, RearCross Traffic Detection and ParkSense Rear Park Assist System. For more information on this incredible new Jeep Wrangler, visit Armstrong Prestige Christchurch at 6 Detroit Place, Addington.

AST By Ben Selby

AN EDGY VISUAL FEAST WITH TON OF NODS TO ITS HURACAN AND AVENTADOR SIBLINGS.

S

o, along with ballistic fire-breathing supercars, an SUV, whether we would care to admit it or not, is still an integral part of Lambo’s DNA. Now comes the third album, the all-new Urus. I spent a long day in Auckland experiencing what Lamborghini call the world’s first ‘Super SUV’. Pronounced ‘your iss’, the Urus on the outside is an edgy visual feast with a ton of nods to its Huracan and Aventador siblings. Everything from the slim LED taillights, sharp edges and those exquisite optional Taigete 23-inch alloys with Pirelli P-Zero rubber, screams Lamborghini. Inside, the surroundings are equally

as mental, though things like the centre console would be familiar to anyone who owned an Audi Q8. That said, it still makes you feel unbelievably special. Under the bonnet, instead of a hard charging V12 or V10, we find a twinturbo V8 with 641hp and 652 ft lb of torque, courtesy of Lamborghini’s parent company Audi. It also weighs in at 2197kg, making it a lightweight compared to other luxury SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga. The figures speak for themselves, zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top whack of 300km/h. Fast doesn’t even begin to cover it. Flip up the fighter jet style starter button cover, press down firmly and the Urus awakens with a primeval growl. Blip the throttle and Urus booms and crackles like distant gun-fire. Select first gear and boy, are you in for a treat. The Urus has several drive modes. Strada is for every day street use, which it manages rather well, sport stiffens things up and makes things, well, sportier. Corsa turns the Urus into a savage weapon,

meaning you devour bendy bitumen so rapidly, it boggles the mind. Each gear change on the eight-speed auto box is crisp and the four-wheel drive system, with the addition of four-wheel-steering, is supple and responsive. However, for the first time since the eighties, you can drive a Lamborghini at a considerable pace, off the beaten track. This it does unexpectedly well, with multiple off-road modes on offer. It also has significant ground clearance to keep you straight and true through the rough stuff. Prices start at $339,000 NZD, not cheap, but when compared to the Huracan and Aventador, the Urus is a more modest way to join the Lamborghini family. Plus, the Urus has what I look for in every car, it’s a real giggle. From rubber-necking around town to blasting along your favourite B-road, paved or not, the Urus is peerless and I kid you not, a proper Lamborghini. Special thanks to Lamborghini Auckland for an incredible day.

TAKE A SEAT By Nicholas Henare

Bold and innovative, the SEAT (pronounced ‘see at’) is a compact crossover vehicle (CUV). Direct from Spanish automaker SEAT, I even had the marketing manager greet me with ‘Hola!’

T

he Ateca is a 140 kW 4Drive with a price tag of $50,900. You have extra options like dynamic chassis control and 19inch machined alloys on the one I tried which take it to $54,400. It has very similar specifications to another brand in the market which is $20,000 more and, to be nice, I won’t mention them but let’s focus on what’s good about the Ateca. Space! The cabin room is impressive with the room to house five family members and their weekend away gear stowed in the back. Handling: it’s got a great pick up and handling ability, proven when doing a U turn in peak hour traffic on Halswell Road - I was greatly impressed. The exterior is a bit generic, but you can get used to that when it comes to bang for buck on engine and performance. Founded in Spain in 1950, this is our real taste of the car and Archibald’s on Tuam has brought them in to see what Christchurch thinks. I think they are worth taking a look at purely for the fact that they are a bloody good drive and there’s a space for that in this price range. Take a seat in a SEAT and you’ll see at what I mean… see what I did there?
