In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. “In most cases, suicide is a solitary event and yet it has often far-reaching repercussions for many others. It is rather like throwing a stone into a pond; the ripples spread and spread.” - Alison Wertheimer
T
here’s a poignant saying that ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ and, while it was likely penned to provide encouragement for those grappling with the challenges of a difficult experience, it is not necessarily accurate in its sentiments. Because, as we know, we all process feelings quite differently. For some, grief really does have the power to make them stronger, for others, it has the ability to break them. Depression has long been a taboo subject in New Zealand; something which is discussed behind cupped hands in the lunchroom, if it is even discussed at all. Well-known New Zealanders such as Mike King, Oscar Kightley, John Kirwan and Jay-Jay Feeney have all lent their names and their profiles to getting mental health into the public consciousness. But for every high-profile New Zealander to propel the discussion into the public sphere, there has been one that has been lost. Greg Boyed, Charlotte Dawson, Sophia ABC AUDITED Hawthorne and Pua Magasiva, to name just a few. There was a record 668 deaths in the 2017/18 year. That’s 668 too many. Not talking about it hasn’t done us any favours. So, let’s talk about it. Let’s shine the spotlight on mental health, depression and suicide. As a society we must do AUDITED everything we can to recognise the signs of depression and learn how to best support those who are suffering. We owe it to each and every one of them.

Imke appreciates the image of ballet is changing. “When I started I wasn’t toned or skinny, but it didn’t matter.” Her dance idols include Misty Copeland and Michaela Deprince, who are changing stereotypes. “I believe to make it big you need to be versatile,” she says. So Ikme also masters other moves such as tap, hip-hop, lyrical and jazz – plus she sings, acts and does modelling. With feet pointed towards an action-packed future, she says, “I’d love to be on Broadway one day”.

mke Koekemoer has adored dancing since she was three – her career now taking off in leaps and bounds. Accepted for a four-week intensive course, Imke is one of 14 dancers from Canterbury Ballet chosen from thousands worldwide who vied for places in three prestigious international dance schools this year. Canterbury Ballet, co-directed by Lily and Alexis Cartright, is in partnership with Ao Tawhiti, which enables students like Imke to learn to dance full-time in tandem with studies; a big advantage on the competitive stage. Her gymnastic-style agility was honed during five years as a power tumbler from the age of eight. “It’s really fun being upside down,” she laughs. “I am classical-ballet trained, but chose contemporary dance

Honest Talk By Céline Gibson
New Zealand’s criminal justice system and art recently combined, with a goal of seeking transformative change.
A
multi-media exhibition which has been touring the South Island, Kōrero Pono featured the true stories of 16 New Zealanders who have been through New Zealand’s criminal justice system; their statements appearing alongside their portraits and photographs from the 16 Kiwi artists who sought to capture their stories through art, including Marianne Muggeridge, Xoë Hall, John Crawford and Christchurch’s very own Fiona Temple. The exhibition was created and curated by JustSpeak, a youth-led movement seeking transformative change in criminal justice that will

bring about a fair, just and compassionate Aotearoa. JustSpeak Director Tania Sawicki Mead says the project shares the importance of investing in solutions that resolve harm, rather than believing that punishment will provide accountability. “Kōrero Pono simply translates to honest talk, which is what we need when it comes to incarceration in New Zealand,” she says. “The stories and accompanied artworks come together as a powerful exhibition that speaks to the long-term consequences of prison on family members, on job prospects and our

collective failure to address the complex drivers of harm such as family violence, drug and alcohol addiction, and mental distress.” The goal of the exhibition was to create new narratives about criminal justice, highlight experiences from people who have suffered incarceration and their whānau, as well as to reduce stigma and challenge public perceptions. In hearing the stories of the 16 people affected by incarceration, visitors to the exhibition could not help but be moved by stories like Jess’s. Jess has been drug-free for eight and a half years now, yet because her last sentence was for two years and nine months (of which she served a year), she is ineligible for the government’s Clean Slate scheme. “I’ve really changed as a person but my criminal convictions will always be there,” Jess says. “No matter how much I’ve changed or the work I’ve done or how many people I’m helping, my options are still very limited.” Jess says The Clean Slate
programme is a great idea, but only for those who qualify. “I think we need to make it easier for people coming out of prison to reintegrate into the community. The journey through the justice system… when people are younger, it can really, really change the course of your life, because if you’re constantly hitting blocked opportunities for jobs or houses, it’s very hard not to go into crime.” Jess gained her degree in criminology and, upon her release from prison, she approached JustSpeak for a job. “I just really believe in their kaupapa of changing the justice system, making it fairer for people. We need to give more of a voice to Māori and people with lived experience because so often, people are making decisions based on research or books… they just haven’t been there. “These stories are very moving,” Jess says of Kōrero Pono. “The people are from different walks of life, ages, identities, ethnicities, genders. I feel like it’s something everybody needs to see.”

Star Siblings By Melinda Collins
Growing up in Christchurch, Scott and Brendan Cole would do anything to get out of dancing. At 8 and 6 that meant clambering out the car window and running off down the street. But then they started doing competitions – and winning – and something just clicked. A couple of years later, younger sister Vanessa joined them and dancing became a lifelong love affair for the siblings.
10 July 18, 2019 Metropol
“W
e were just absolutely hooked, all three; we were completely living it in our teenage years,” Vanessa says. They would spend hours pouring over dancing videos and now laugh at how the dancers became ‘stars’ in the minds of the then teenagers. Today, it’s the trio themselves that are the stars.
we learnt to dance properly because she never did,” Vanessa says. “Mum’s gone from DWTS to our brother starting a new reality singing show in the UK, so she moves from TV show to TV show,” Scott laughs. “I bet her friends are like ‘Oh Karen just does not shut up about her kids’.” But they assure me, she was never a ‘dance mum’. “She’ll be there boots and all enjoying it, but she’s never pushed or shoved or been sitting on top of us or watching rehearsals,” Vanessa says. “She’s just not like that. She’s a great support without all the intrusive smothering. She loves it!” Scott and his partner Hayden Boyce have joined Vanessa in Christchurch, where she remains based, to unwind after the latest season, when we catch up about the experience. The first couple of years of the show, which is now in its eighth season, Vanessa commuted between Christchurch and Auckland for filming, but this year she was paired up with Whanganuibased Glen Osborne, which saw her relocate to the city for the duration. “So she hasn’t been based in Auckland at all during the filming,” Scott laughs. “It’s had its positives and negatives! She had to learn the pro dancers when she turned up on set on the Saturday; everyone else has done it for two or three days.” “It’s certainly a rollercoaster, there’s no doubt about it,” Vanessa agrees. “What’s amazing about it is the creativity, the pressure, the
intensity, the relentlessness; it all comes together to be such an amazing experience because it is so short-lived, but it’s loaded with every human emotion.” There was something extra special about DWTS 2019; the brotherhood; the men loving men and men supporting men to all do well together, “whether they’re crying or whether they’re triumphant,” Vanessa says. In fact, the whole 2019 cast was an “incredibly supportive bubble”, the pair describe. Rather than intense competition, it became about each of those involved genuinely wanting each other to do well. “I don’t think we could do this job if we weren’t completely committed on every level,” Vanessa says. “You have to be in there, boots and all.” But that level of emotional investment comes at a price and that price is how hard it is when you have to leave. Voted off with his dance partner Mai FM Day host K’Lee in week seven after a strong jive that got the pair their first ‘eight’ in the competition, Scott was able to comfortably say that he felt like he had won anyway. But it’s extra tough when you leave after a harder performance, and Vanessa describes her finish in week eight as “a really hard way to end it”, despite Scott calling her week three waltz the “dance of the season”. The show rolls around pretty quickly, they agree, and they are both committed to another season if the opportunity arises. “It’s (dancing) what I think I’ll always do,” Vanessa says.

Scott, Vanessa and Brendan may be best known for their roles on Dancing with the Stars (DWTS), but what you didn’t see on the show was the years of hard work and dedication it took to get there. The former Asian Pacific Latin American Dance Champion and New Zealand Latin American Champion, Brendan won the first ever season of the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2004, then went on to judge New Zealand’s first four seasons of DWTS. With three consecutive national titles under their professional belts, Scott and Vanessa are the three-time former New Zealand Amateur Latin champions. Scott too spent time in the UK, where him and Brendan spent time teaching and touring, before he came back home, settling in Auckland where he works full time in the industry. Meanwhile, Vanessa has spent the better part of 20 years teaching dance in Christchurch and honing her skills on the dance floor. “I’ve been learning as much as I’ve been teaching, so when the show came up it was amazing timing to then put all that skill from honing the craft through teaching into the show and into performing as well,” she says. Despite encouraging her children to pursue dance, mum Karen never dreamed they would all pursue it as a career, but it’s a great pay off for all the years – and expense – of driving them around from competition to competition, the siblings laugh. “Her and dad did rock ‘n’ roll but they never learned it properly, so it was her wish that

BACK ON THE AIRWAVES It has been 27 years since Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford first teamed up to host the breakfast show on 91ZM Christchurch. Now they’ve brought their magic back to Newstalk ZB 100.1 FM, where you’ll catch them from 12-4pm Tuesday-Friday. We caught up with the dynamic duo about the new gig. It has been 16 years since you finished working together. How is it going being back together? Simon: Just so enjoyable! I am incredibly thankful to work with my dear friend again! Phil: Much easier than might have been expected. It helps that our friendship was never faked for radio, but very genuine. Is the magic still there? Phil: If by ‘magic’ you meant do we still both have a big streak of an irreverent 11-year-old in us? Then yes, it is. Simon: Absolutely! Phil and I have remained firm friends for 27 years. He and Jan both came to our daughters’ weddings and getting back on air with him was relatively seamless! His laugh is the same, his mannerisms, his humour and the fact that I just cannot get him to stop talking! If ever a man was made for News-talk, it’s Phil! How does it feel to not be doing the breakfast show?! Simon: Let’s put it this way, I do not miss the 4:30am starts and the sound of my alarm clock chirping! We really feel at home in the midday slot. Obviously the audience is different, as is the general vibe of the show because you’re not waking people up. It’s more leisurely in some respects and, after 30 years of breakfast, I was certainly ready to take that on. Phil: I loved the work, but I grew to hate the hours. My family’s life would have to depend on it for me to agree to a job again where you have to wake at 4:45 in the morning. You won best breakfast show numerous times from 1992 to 2003. Why do you think the dynamics were so strong between the two of you? Simon: Honestly I think a lot of it was down to work ethic. Phil and I were fiercely competitive and we both felt if we were going to be getting up so early we wanted to make it a success! We worked very hard to be the best we could be and we never lost sight of the fact that we wanted to have fun! We loved each other’s company so that made the job a joy!
12 July 18, 2019 Metropol
Phil: We liked each other and, while in some ways we’re very different, in a lot more ways we’re very similar; boring family men who love sport and our wives. What’s the overall vibe you’re hoping to capture on the show? Simon: News is a serious business but it doesn’t have to be doom and gloom! We want to tell the stories with our own brand of personality, humour and, above all, respect for the story, our listeners and the subjects. We want it to be relaxed, informative and as I am fond of saying, “serious fun”. Phil: That it’s a friendly place to be, where people won’t be treated rudely or unfairly. And if that’s ‘PC gone mad’, then more power to ‘PC gone mad’. You’ve started off with a bang, with Bic Runga and Kieran Reid as guests already. What sort of content can we expect from you guys? Simon: News is effectively just what people are talking about, so we hope to cover everything from politics, arts, sports, regional news to CNN, Kim Jong-un to Kim Kardashian… and above all to make our family of listeners aware; they are our show! Phil: We want whenever possible to talk to people actually involved, whether the topic is the All Black team, or a house owner whose whole view has been blocked by a fence put up by a neighbour. I understand you and your families are close outside of work? Phil: That’s true. When Jan and I first met Simon and Jodi they didn’t have a family. We were there an hour after their first girl, Sammi, was born and have seen all four girls grow up, and have been to the first two weddings. Simon: For sure. Phil and Jan are two of our dearest friends. We try to arrange regular catch ups and meals, although now with Phil’s rapidly ascending age, we tend to make it in the afternoon so he doesn’t nod off… LOL!
one on one By Melinda Collins
What do you enjoy the most about working together? Simon: Phil has an incredible zest for life; his laugh is simply infectious! I love his pragmatism, because I tend to be a bit of a worrier, so Phil is the perfect counter to that. I also thoroughly enjoy his breadth of knowledge; there is always something fascinating that he regales me with. Above all else though, he keeps life fun! Phil: The shared laughter… and that I think we’ve really tried to not be jerks to people along the way. What do you both love about what you get to do for a job? Phil: That we get to talk with and meet people who you wouldn’t be lucky enough to cross paths with in most other jobs. Simon: I’ve always seen it as a complete privilege to share peoples’ stories and be part of the listeners’ lives; that is something I take seriously. Then to be able to broadcast events and be at the cutting edge of some pivotal moments in this country’s history is incredibly exciting. What have been some of your standout moments in the industry? Phil: The big snow in 1992, when we stayed on air for six hours at ZM and basically took phone calls throughout. The naked ads on TV, which remain – by a mile – the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done. Simon: The earthquakes in Christchurch will always stand out for me. It was gut wrenchingly sad at times, but also uplifting in the extreme to see how the community rallied and groups of people from different socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities and demographics came together and for a number of months, despite some dreadful hardship, this created a wonderful sense of togetherness and care. You’ve had a tough year Simon; we all hope Jodi is doing well and I’m sure she’s a proud wife as you embark on this new part of your professional journey… Simon: Jodi is simply my life! I have never been so in awe of anyone as I am of my wife! She is my greatest cheerleader and support, and just being with her makes me feel like the most blessed man in the world! I could not ask for more!

ounder, Managing Director and Owner of House of Travel Christchurch City office, David Williams, says their bookings for Tokyo 2020 opened on 20 June to unprecedented demand. “We’re already close to 60 percent of our merchandise sold and we know the remaining 40 percent will fill quickly. The Olympics attract more than double the numbers of the Rugby World Cup.” New Zealand Olympic Travel (NZOT) began in 2013 as a joint venture between House of Travel and the New Zealand Olympic Committee to deliver a bespoke Olympic Travel and Games experience. It’s managed exclusively through the House of Travel Christchurch City office. David’s team oversees all transport, accommodation
and promotion for eight games events within a four-year cycle, comprising the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the Youth Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. With sports celebrity commentator Jenny-May Clarkson and former Olympic rowing gold medallist Eric Murray hosting Tokyo 2020, this promises to be the ultimate Olympic experience. Apart from NZOT, another branch unique to House of Travel Christchurch City is HOT Events, started by David in 2000 and headed by Business Director Victoria Wales. HOT Events creates programmes for conferences and incentive events that take in the culture of the destination and offer something special that can be booked off the shelf
– like a private tour of Tokyo with your own Sumo guides; exploring Saigon on a vespa; touring the hinterland of Bali in VW Jeeps, or just enjoying a simple lunch on your own private beach in Fiji. “For some, an incentive trip is to experience a new destination they mightn’t normally do on their own, such as an intrepid experience in ultimate luxury; while others may be seeking professional and personal development. Incentive trips aim to build business relationships through the benefits of networking away from the office,” Victoria says. HOT Events is designed to celebrate success, deliver sustainable growth to businesses and, most importantly, create unforgettable tailormade
experiences. Their success is evidenced by their 14 awards collected at the HOT Awards on 23 March 2019, including the highly coveted Best Performing House of Travel Outlet 2018. David and Victoria say crucial to this success is their collaboration with clients and their relationships with airlines and hotels. “Clients know and love us. We build respectful relationships, instead of being just suppliers. The reason they keep returning is because we deliver product that far exceeds clients’ expectations.” Find House of Travel Christchurch City at 122 Victoria Street, phone 03 365 7687, email christchurch@hot.co.nz or visit www.hotchch.com. Did you know? All of their South Island branches are managed through their Head Offices in Canterbury and all are owned and operated by Christchurch business owner Rachael Cone. This means there are no franchise fees or other unnecessary expenses instead they have eliminated the costs that do not contribute towards selling your home, and pass these savings directly on to you, their clients. On top of this, every property listed with Total Realty is professionally photographed and promoted on 6 leading real estate websites. Having always been strong believers in the power of the internet, Total Realty was recently ranked as outperforming the market in key performance areas such as number of days to sell and number of views per property, by New Zealand’s #1 real estate site.

Total Realty also have branches in Nelson and Dunedin as well as Christchurch and North Canterbury.
Where low fees and quality service come together. Time on the Market Explained
Rachel Cox
Statistics show that most buyers come through a property in the first 3 weeks. This is because when a property is first listed, it is exposed to the existing pool of buyers in the market as well as any new buyers who enter the market. Normally after 3 weeks the buyers that are interested in the property will have viewed the property already and it is really only a small number of new buyers each week that will view after that. Therefore it is vital that any offers produced during the first 3 weeks of marketing are given serious consideration by the seller. A common mistake is to reject an early offer only to end up accepting a lower offer months down the track when the interest in the home has significantly dropped.
Total Realty is delighted to now welcome Dean Smith, a top performing agent, to their Dunedin team! With over 14 years in the real estate industry and already having hundreds of successful Dean Smith sales behind him you can be sure you are making a great choice when you choose to sell your Dunedin property with Dean. Many past clients keep returning for Dean’s continued 5 star service. Dean’s decision to join the Total Realty team was based on their positive work environment that he describes as “friendly, generous and supportive”. What a recent client had to say: ”Dean was a pleasure to work with when selling our first home. He went above and beyond to make the process as transparent and seamless as possible. There was nothing too big to ask of him. His approach was friendly yet professional and his experience in the industry is apparent. I would recommend his service to anyone wishing to sell their home.” Ella Visit totalrealty.co.nz to read more about Dean Smith and view the lovely homes he has listed.
Buyers typically make lower offers on properties that have been sitting on the market for longer. In this market it is imperative that sellers understand this principle and price their property to reflect fair market value from the outset. This enables their agent to obtain the best price during the prime selling period, without “chasing the market downhill” in months to come. For more information on the marketing and selling process please contact one of our friendly consultants!

Real estate agent’s Supreme Win When local real estate business owner Rachael Cone and her husband Rob van Nobelen started working on plans for their dream home in Christchurch, the idea never crossed their minds that it would one day hold the coveted House of the Year National Supreme Winner title.
A
s the planning evolved, the home grew in size and so did their family, Rachael laughs. “We had two more children in the build process so we were pleased we had added a bit more space.” That “bit more space” totals 700sqm on an idyllic 9000sqm site, perfect for raising their four children while also working in their real estate business Total Realty. “We had just finished having a spa and were tucked up in bed at about 11pm when the phone rang,” the couple laugh. “It was our foreman calling to say we had ‘done quite well’ at the House of the Year awards in Auckland. We ended up back in the spa, this time
with a bottle of wine to celebrate!” Rachael is quick to point out how happy they were for Metzger Builders Ltd (MBL) to win this recognition and credits them alongside O’Neil Architecture for the design flair and faultless finishing touches that wowed the judges. So where to from here? Rachael remarks that real estate is in their blood and they love servicing the South Island with Total Realty, their low fee (just 1.25 percent) real estate business. With real estate branches now up and down the South Island, the couple is firmly planted and certainly won’t be moving house anytime soon!

Fundraising for additional accommodation near the hospital to meet demand for out-of-town patients and their families is halfway towards its $12 million goal.
T
he Bone Marrow Cancer Trust (BMCT) has owned and operated Ranui House in Cambridge Terrace since 1993, providing short-term residential accommodation for patients from throughout New Zealand – primarily the South Island – who are required to come to Christchurch Hospital for medical treatment. To help more patients and families in need, the development – Ranui Apartments – is planned for construction on the corner of Selwyn Street and Waller Terrace, and will provide an additional 42 self-contained apartments, says BMCT chief executive Allison Nicol. “With just 16 two-bedroom apartments and 10 one-

bedroom apartments here at Ranui House, we are very busy and often have to turn patients and their families away, which is really hard – but we just don’t have the space.” Allison saw a need for accommodation for families who live out of Christchurch when her eldest son was diagnosed with leukaemia in 1983. She originally set up 26 fundraising sub-committees across the South Island to establish Ranui House – which now consists of two buildings, affectionately named ‘Big Ranui’ and ‘Little Ranui’. Ranui is the only purposebuilt accommodation to take all patients from all hospital departments. Over the past 25 years, thousands of families
from across the country have stayed at Ranui. This has been made possible with the help of ongoing fundraising and generous donations from Community Trusts, Charitable Gaming Trusts, the Lottery Grants Board, companies and individuals. “People have been wonderfully generous and the families who stay here are so grateful for the support during such a challenging time in their lives – we receive so many incredible letters of thanks from them. Our aim has always been to provide a home away from home, to keep families together. This makes things a little easier for them and we know that patients who have family support do so much better.”

The two-bedroom apartments will all be fully self-contained and designed as a three-key system, meaning they can also provide accommodation for one-night stays – which isn’t currently possible at Ranui House. Carparking will be available, which is a real asset for families. better reflects our current global service capabilities.” The locally owned business employs 12 highly skilled and experienced staff, working in import and export shipping (FCL and LCL), air freight services, express courier, and also includes three dedicated licensed customs brokers on site. Compass Global Logistics Ltd is also a member of the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Federation of New Zealand Inc. From start to finish, they’re on hand to guide you through the paperwork, work with partners to minimise risk, and take personal accountability for your items throughout the process. A handy online tracking service also provides current shipping container tracking information, as well as access to supporting formal documentation. With more than 30 years’ experience, Compass Global has seen it all and can handle even the trickiest of loads. They’re used to transporting everything from boats and machinery to vehicles, and have a mantra that announces, “if it’s Difficult, Different or Demanding, let us give you a quotation”. As proud Cantabrians, and with a strong desire to support the local community that has supported them throughout the 33 years, the agency sponsors both Canterbury Rugby and the Inspire Foundation. Stronger & healthier skin H&B is now offering Medical Dermal Needling in salon today! Dermal needling serves two main functions; firstly, it stimulates epidermal growth to provide stronger and healthier skin, secondly, it stimulates the production of collagen, making skin tighter and firmer.
D
ermal needling uses a specialised instrument that contains incredibly fine medical needles to create micro punctures on the skin’s surface layer. This triggers the skin’s natural collagen production and restorative processes. The treatment is minimally invasive, however it has been found safer than some other skin treatments such as chemical peels, laser treatments, etc. If you have scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles or want to give your skin some firming, dermal needling could be for you!
Dermal needling can help to stimulate collagen, increase skin elasticity, soften fine lines and reduce the appearance of scarring, pigmentation and sun damage. It also allows treatment products to be better absorbed by the skin. As every client is different, H&B does require you to have a quick consultation with one of their amazing beauticians beforehand, as they can tailor a treatment plan to your skin needs. Contact H&B on 03 381 8939, email info@hairart.co.nz or visit www.hairart.co.nz, or pop into the salon at 96 Cranford Street.

usual claw-shape of regular mice. I reviewed the original Swiftpoint mouse many years ago and have been a regular user on my laptop ever since, so I am well used to the very different hand position the ProPoint requires. But I do remember the initial steep learning curve and just how plain weird using a pen-grip mouse feels. Persistence pays off though and once you get used to the new position, making that gnarled claw shape on regular mice makes you realise how bad it is for you. The Propoint talks to a small USB dongle that also doubles as a charging station for the little mouse, but it can also connect via Bluetooth. I couldn’t get my MacBook Pro to recognise the ProPoint, but I had no issues pairing my iMac and iPad. The mouse supports more than one simultaneous Bluetooth connections, so hot-swapping between devices is easy. Just like the original Swiftpoint, the technology behind the rechargable battery is
astonishing. A full charge will see days of regular use, or weeks of intermittent usage, while a quick one-minute charge will have you working for hours. Pairing the ProPoint with an iPad doesn’t allow you to use it as a mouse or stylus, but it does allow you full control over Word and Excel via remote desktop apps such as VMWare and TeamViewer for example. The ProPoint also comes with gyroscopic technology and, with the flick of a switch, the mouse becomes a presenting device for Microsoft PowerPoint, letting you navigate and draw on slides or use it as a virtual laser pointer. The gyroscope also facilitates the ‘tilt’ functionality that you can programme (through the downloadable control panel) to do a range of tasks, my favourite being flicking between tabs in the browser. With three buttons and a scroll wheel to customise, the ProPoint is more than enough mouse to satisfy any non-gaming computer usage. ProPoint: $319 www.swiftpoint.com

Decide, Commit, Succeed
Commitment is what transforms a promise into a reality, said Abraham Lincoln, and Damien Fahey and Sam Cherry of Tabak Business Sales could not agree more.
“I
f you bring your prized business to the market, you need to have already definitely decided you want to sell,” Damien says. “Long experience shows that vendors who bring a ‘laissez-faire’ attitude to sale, or simply want to test ‘who’s out there’, tend to be disappointed and potentially erode business value.” The decision to sell can be difficult and prompted by different reasons or situations, and Damien and Sam are always very happy to talk your position through with you, to help you establish where you are really at and what your goals are. However, fixating solely on money and entering the market with a successful sale predicated on receiving ‘top dollar’ is inadvisable. “Your mindset as
Metropol July 18, 2019 31
in the city
a vendor needs to be focused not necessarily on achieving ‘maximum’, but ‘optimum’ – that is, what’s best for all parties. The fairest is not always the highest,” Damien says. “There are real dangers with a total obsession on an extreme price,” Sam warns. “Once you enter the market, you have crossed a Rubicon of commitment, whether you think you have or not. You naturally lose edge because you stop thinking strategically about the future of the business and then if you don’t sell, can you reenergise?” Damien adds. “A business is a living, breathing, profit-making ecosystem – and business performance is directly impacted by how the owner feels and performs.” Your business confidentiality could suffer if you simply ‘test the market’; a risk to your intellectual property, staff, customers and suppliers if you are not fully committed to the sale process. Further, if your business sits on the market for a long time, or if you don’t sell, but return to the market more seriously later, your business can look tired and you might walk away with less, all because it was not priced appropriately in the first place. “Also, do leave some salt on the bread,” Damien says. “It shouldn’t be about squeezing the last dollar from a buyer or triumphantly beating the system; it’s your legacy of leaving something great behind, your staff, clients, suppliers continuing to grow and prosper.” As well as the vendor, your broker needs to be fully invested to achieve a good result and that’s what you’ll receive at Tabak. “We aren’t a brokerage that collects bulk business listings without genuine intent to sell, and that’s reflected in our unequalled track record of listing to sales success ratio,” Sam says. Damien and Sam ensure the information clients receive about their business’s value is backed by correct market data, banking and accounting advice. Transparency, accountability and validity of valuation methods are critical because they achieve great sales and avoid disappointed vendors. Phone Tabak Business Sales on 03 377 7491.

Rocking the leather look By Melinda Collins
TRELISE COOPER WHATEVER THE LEATHER JACKET
The leather jacket is an iconic silhouette which has crossed the sartorial divide from street star to high fashion, and it has remained there ever since.
W
ith its cult street appeal, this amour of cool is a jack of all fashionable trades; toughen up a floral dress or pull together a chic, all-black ensemble – it’s all about adding a bit of exterior edge to an otherwise easy-going aesthetic. Our very own Trelise Cooper has done just that with the Whatever the Leather Jacket, pictured, in her soon to be released Spring 2020 collection. Despite its tough exterior, leather can soften easily, so while you may have the crisp white shirt and patent leather shoes to make any mother in law proud, a pair of leather pants can add some much-needed edge to a play-it-safe look, or
why not pair that leather pencil skirt with a light silk blouse to rock a completely different vibe. Strong, tough and provocative, leather represents strength and that’s what you want when you’re heading to the office. An investment watch or briefcase is power dressing at its finest. While leather can add luxe to your wardrobe, the latest leather looks aren’t all dark and moody. Brown leather is classic and sophisticated. It looks crisp and clean with white and can be thrown over a casual look to completely alter the ensemble at face value. So, why not take a walk on the wild side and be a ‘lady of leather’?

Can you recall the very first set of teeth you ever made? The first set of teeth I made at the age of 16 were a disaster... but I see that as fortunate as I soon realised how difficult and how much of an art it is to make dentures for a patient that has lost their teeth. Taking a patient through a rehabilitation programme means so much to me. Now I’ve got 40 years of knowledge from New Zealand, Japan and Europe where I spent time honing my skills. Implantology is fast becoming an option for patients; this is a very technical approach to rehabilitation and is much more costly, needing planning and time. I am currently looking closely at a new Zirconia system from Europe for these large implant cases. It must have felt like a fantastic achievement to open your own clinic in Harley Street? Having my own studio on Harley Street was part of an incredible journey for me. I worked with some of the top prosthodontists/dentists in the world and made teeth for many international celebrities. I also made teeth for the average man/woman and treated all my patients in exactly the same manner. Some of the most interesting people were the ‘behind the scenes’ people... speech writers, directors, businessmen, inventors, fellow artists. Some very interesting things happened to me during these times... parties, private jets and, ultimately, a
role in a British movie! But what drove me then and continues to drive me now is making teeth that improve lives. I can sit at home and see my patients of the stage and screen and have a quiet satisfaction that billions of people are looking at my work, without even realising it. What brought you back home? To slow down, go surfing and do my oil painting... there were not many waves in London. Funnily enough, I’m as busy as I have always been... but I like it. I still find myself travelling internationally to keep up with technology, or speak at conferences about my approach to dentures and dental ceramics. What are some of the common dental situations you see? The most common thing I’m presented with in my daily work is what I call a ‘collapsed denture face’, caused by a lifetime of denture wearing that has taken away a patient’s appearance and character – and often their self-esteem. Rebuilding this in a natural way is what I strive to do daily. Understanding a patient’s ‘oral architecture’ and what they have lost is critical. I am fascinated by the face and this is what I lecture about internationally – how to rebuild it. How does it feel to see a client elated by their new appearance? Seeing a patient restored to their natural appearance is why I do what I do. As I move through the stages of my work, the change can be quite dramatic. This is usually followed by friends querying what they’ve done and commenting on how great they look. Patients carry on their lives – looking and feeling great and no one knows why; it’s their secret. I love this side of my work.

Exercise: The New Health Prescription From chronic low back pain to mental health, exercise has been shown to be a highly effective ‘prescription’ for many health conditions. We spoke to Cath Julius, Clinical Director at Freedom Health Physio and Pilates, about how you can enjoy the benefits of exercise too.
S
o if exercise is so effective, why do so many prefer to take medicine over exercise? “There are many barriers to getting started on a new exercise routine,” Freedom Health Clinical Director Cath
Julius says. “But most come down to one thing – fear. Aside from the fear of embarrassment or uncertainty, people with a history of illness or injury are naturally quite worried that

exercising may do more harm than good.” The best way to combat this is to ensure you are under the care of someone you can trust. “At Freedom Health, our Pilates and Rehab Programmes are all supervised by highly experienced physiotherapists, so you know you are with someone who fully understands your body and your health. “Movement changes lives. When people begin with a long held fear that movement may

assist them through their cancer journey which can be an inwardly deep, reflective process; however, once fear is removed, we can discover many rewarding moments – hope is restored and plans of self-recovery are made,” Tracy says. With a Bachelor in Holistic Health Science, a Masters of Natural Medicine and currently completing her Doctorate of Natural Medicine, Tracy says that while conventional cancer treatments manage the symptoms, they don’t always address the underlying root of the diagnosis. “It’s essential to undertake a holistic journey, even alongside conventional treatment, to support your body through treatments, and also to discover and eradicate
the root cause, thereby helping prevent its return – a very empowering process.” To support your journey back to health, Tracy offers a free 45 minute initial consultation, followed by an extensive health investigation with functional medicine testing when required, recommendations and an achievable coaching programme. “We all enter this life with gifts and a purpose, but for whatever reason, life gets in the way and dreams get lost. I see a cancer diagnosis as a divine tap on the shoulder to return to who we are meant to be – to thrive and live the life designed for us.” Wellpower is at Suite 10 225 High Street, Christchurch. P
odiatrist and Owner/ Director of Feet First,
Charlotte Russell, says the well-established clinic takes
pride in being a general, family friendly podiatry practice. “We see everybody – from children with foot issues to adults who, for instance, might be suffering from ‘high risk feet’, due to chronic conditions that affect the feet, such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as providing general foot care for the elderly.” If you’re a keen walker
or on your feet a lot and experiencing foot or heel pain that’s impeding the enjoyment of your outdoor pursuits, Charlotte says prescription orthotics can make things significantly better. “Walking problems impact on everything in life. We do an in-depth bio-mechanical assessment of the client’s feet and base our orthotic prescription on that.” A wonderful point of difference with this podiatry clinic is The Shoe Room; the perfect opportunity to not only purchase fashionable and functional footwear, but to be fitted with the right shoes to meet your needs, thanks to the knowledge and expertise of the Feet First Podiatry team. Improving brain health The New Zealand Brain Research Institute (NZBRI) has three main charitable aims: to reveal new knowledge about the brain and its dysfunction; to improve the standard of care for people with neurological disorders, locally, nationally and globally, and to educate clinicians, scientists, and the public on brain research findings and techniques.
T
he NZBRI was founded in 2004 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF). Board Chairperson
Dr Cheryl Doig says NZBRI is focused on improving brain health for our community through research, education and clinical practice. This work is undertaken by an

experienced and globally recognised team of researchers and clinicians who are based in Christchurch. The NZBRI is also central to identifying emerging research talent, developing that talent and retaining it for Canterbury and New Zealand. However, the life of a medical researcher is not particularly secure. “They are wholly driven by dedication and passion because the funding model we have to work under means their incomes are not guaranteed from year to year,” explains NZBRI Commercial Director Colin McDougall. Dr Doig says that while medical research is vitally important and the work of NZBRI is especially so, funding such research can be challenging. “We do appreciate the regular donations and generous bequests that continue to make our work possible in an increasingly crowded donor market,” says Dr Doig, who also recognises the tremendous work of those who volunteer their time to organise various fundraising events that help raise the profile of brain research while also raising valuable research funds. The major part of the research funding raised by NZBRI comes from the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, the Neurological Foundation of NZ, Brain Research New Zealand and Health Research Council research grants, but both NZBRI and the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation host entertaining fundraising events throughout the year. The annual Friends of the Brain Institute (FBI) Golf Tournament and the Opera Meets Art events are popular and continue to be strongly supported by Cantabrians. Upcoming fundraising events include a Gala night at the Court Theatre on 2 August featuring the globally acclaimed play The Father, which smashes misconceptions of dementia and stars acclaimed New Zealand actor Mark Hadlow. Research Director Dr Michael MacAskill and Professor Tim Anderson lead the research team which is strongly focused on Parkinson’s disease. This flagship project is a longitudinal study that has been running for 12 years and has involved several hundred patients, their spouses, and healthy control subjects. Dr MacAskill says the project has contributed to the international effort to improve the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s – a stage where early warning signs for dementia become apparent. This is important for when dementia treatments become available: researchers understand that treatments will need to be applied as early as possible to have a useful impact. If you would like to know more about NZBRI and how you can support its research work, visit NZBRI on www.nzbri. org or find them on Facebook.

Tamed Tresses By Clementine Page
Hunting for a hot hairstyle for your special day? Whether your dress is boldly bejewelled or sleek and simple, we’ve got the ‘do’ for you.
Y
our hair is your canvas – so why not decorate it? In 2019, we’re seeing statement hairstyles featuring bejewelled pins, barrettes, headbands and even tiaras and halos. A well-placed headpiece accentuates any simple hairdo – think sleek, straight locks or beachy waves held back by a pair of dainty barrettes or

pins adorned with sparkles. A headband studded with pearls or a glittering tiara attached to a cascading veil makes for a look fit for a queen, as does a hair chain scattered with crystals. The 2019 bridal year is welcoming nature-inspired crowns and hairpieces with open arms, from oversized
floral headpieces to delicate leaves nestled into curls. Bridal catwalks are in full bloom, with recent shows from Rodarte, Alejandro Resta and Reem Acra bringing back faithful flower crowns in both delicate and bold silhouettes. Bridal hairstyles are also getting a whimsical touch of green, with delicate leafy hair accessories and horticultural halos proving popular too. Add a wild pop of colour to a traditional white ensemble or go for a more natural vibe by weaving vines into any classic updo. Buns – they’re practical, versatile and above all, sexy and sophisticated. For a smooth and sleek bun that won’t unravel when you’re dancing the night away, we recommend using products that smooth strands and hold them in place. For a more romantic, carefree look, consider an undone chignon with trailing tendrils that frame your face – a perfectly chic ‘do’ that flawlessly complements any sleeveless gown. Elevate either of these looks with a
minimalist wedding veil on a small comb and a pair of teardrop earrings – voilà! Suitable for both the aisle and the after-party, a pretty ponytail might be your saving grace! Take your pick: will it be a polished pony high on your head or one with texture and volume that sits at the nape of your neck? Whatever your preference, 2019 sees countless variations – side swept, swept back, inverted… the list goes on. Too plain? A jewel-encrusted pin, a pearlescent headband or a pair of bedazzled barrettes is bound to dress it up. Bridal braids are reigning supreme in the world of weddings, as spotted behind the scenes at Berta, Cymbeline and Suzanne Neville – romantic, classic, relaxed or bohemian, there’s a braid for every bride. Incorporating braided details into an updo is subtle way to add texture and detail, or if you’re feeling edgy, dramatic double braids might just be the answer. A braided crown is simply divine, especially when decorated with small flowers.
“Going grey gracefully and letting yourself go… there is an enormous difference!” quotes Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.
I
Will you marry me? Let’s face it, when it comes to proposals of marriage, nothing beats making it an unforgettable one. Who can resist the bended knee, the proffered ring and the view from atop the Eiffel Tower?
n fact, Vicki says, silver/ grey is the sexy new black and you don’t need to be 65+ to be a silver siren. But you do need to have a hair stylist that understands grey hair and can give you expert advice and the right approach for you. For years women (and men) coloured their hair when it turned grey, but we’re increasingly yearning for a more natural shift in hair colour, embracing silver and using the very latest in ‘no demarcation’ colour systems that still enhance your style and give shine, but without the nasty regrowth line. Consultations are complimentary at V For Hair and Beauty Merivale and well worth the time to get you going in the right direction for your desired look, whether that’s natural hues, avant garde, silver blonde, foxing or simply going grey gracefully. Edgy fast-food outlet Hell Pizza pulled a cheeky stunt recently, announcing that its new ‘Burger Pizza’ contained a pea-protein meat substitute by the culinary innovators at Beyond Meat. We check out some of our favourite easy alternatives to meat.
ulled jackfruit: Best known for its likeness to pulled pork in both texture and taste, marinated pulled jackfruit is the perfect vegan filling for wraps, tacos, nachos, burgers… the list is endless! Nut roast: Great served hot or cold, this nutty loaf can use almost any type of nuts and is packed full of protein, fibre and healthy fat. Check out a top-notch recipe over at www.bosh.tv/recipes/big-boshnut-roast. Bean burgers: Looking for meatfree patties for the barbie? Quick, easy, inexpensive and adaptable, bean burgers are delicious, not to mention full of healthy nutrients. With a myriad of vegan/vegetarian recipes online, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Quorn: This protein-packed beauty has been one of the most popular meat substitutes since the dawn of meat alternatives - and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Derived from an edible fungus known as mycoprotein, quorn is perfect for virtually any recipe that uses chicken, from curries and stir-fries to ‘chicken’ nuggets and kebabs. Breaking free of diets By Tracey Edwardes
Tansy Boggon believes eating intuitively and savouring every joyful moment can help us to nourish and nurture our body and mind.
S
he debunks diet industry constraints in her first book Joyful Eating: How to Break Free of Diets and Make Peace with Your Body. As a qualified nutritionist and wellness coach, Tansy explores how eating to nurture our bodies can be pleasurable, and how restricting and depriving ourselves holds us back from a vibrant and joyful life. “There are no diet plans. It’s more a philosophical guide that explores how our sense of self-worth and emotions influence our relationship with food and how people of all shapes and sizes can be healthy!”
Australian-born, Tansy moved to Christchurch last year with husband Rob Hutchings, a Chiropractor at Happy Spine. Her calling in nutrition and eating psychology began a decade ago after 15 years in the environmental science field. Brought up a healthconscious vegetarian, she has spent the last two years juggling writing her book and coaching clients - and also provides nutrition advice and recipes for New World. Tansy says that change needs to come from within, as when we rely solely on the experts, it can erode trust in ourselves and our own body.
“Every one of us is different. We have different genetics, microbes, lifestyles, upbringing and culture that play into how our bodies respond to the food we eat and how we relate to food and our bodies. Even if we had a perfect diet, it is unlikely practical due to our individual uniqueness. “Diets can be another stress on an already stressful lifestyle. In my book, I help people explore their own beliefs, habits, emotions and associations to free themselves of diet stress. Joyful Eating is about being curious and exploring why you ate or didn’t eat, without
judgement or guilt. When you tune into your body, savouring food’s sight, taste, touch and feel, it can aid digestion and satisfaction. “The problem lies with diets and strict rules – not ourselves!” Mingle with the author during the book’s launch at Mt Pleasant Community Centre on 24 August, which happens to be Tansy’s 42nd birthday! RSVP at www. joyfuleatinglaunchchristchurch. eventbrite.co.nz or purchase the book at www. joyfuleatingnutrition.com/book. Metropol has two of Tansy’s books to give away. mindset. Even some of the taproom furniture is recycled, with the pews coming from the old St Matthews church. In a bowl, combine the warm water, sugar and yeast. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. Mix the flour and salt into the yeast mixture, then turn out onto a clean floured work surface and knead for 10 minutes. Place into an oiled bowl, cover, and leave to rest for 30 minutes. Cut the dough in half, and roll out into two 1cm thick circles. Place onto greased trays. Bake in an oven, preheated to 220 degrees, for 15 minutes, then carefully remove from the oven and spread the bases with the tomato passata and sprinkle with mixed herbs. Season and top evenly with the mozzarella cheese. Return to the oven for a further 20 minutes or until the base is golden and the cheese has melted. Dollop the ricotta over the pizzas, sprinkle over the rocket and top with the prosciutto. Drizzle over the warmed Egmont honey, season and garnish with thyme leaves. Serve immediately!

Chocolate is arguably the most universally loved treat in the world. However, for the last 80 years just three types of chocolate – dark, milk and white have been available. This finally changed in 2017 with the exciting innovation of a fourth chocolate type.

T
he name of this new style is Ruby Chocolate, developed by the world’s largest BelgianSwiss company Barry Callebaut, with their ruby cocoa beans grown in Ecuador, Brazil or the Ivory Coast. As the name
suggests, the chocolate comes in a natural pink hue and offers a different taste from the other three types – it is best described as having a smooth berry-fruity flavour but without any actual berries or colours added!

How did the Cellar idea come about? Craig, the store owner, has always dreamed of the day we could open the Cellar. He has been collecting wines for the last 15 years for the sole goal of sharing them with our customers. They have all been stored in an offsite cellar, under perfect conditions. How do you choose what to purchase? We taste a lot of wine and travel to different wine regions to find new products. Planning must be at least five years ahead to ensure we have the best wines to add to our cellar.
What’s in the cellar? By Nicholas Henare
There’s a gentleman at FreshChoice Merivale’s Wine Cellar, Andy Gutschlag, who has a real understanding and appreciation for finding the perfect partnership between food and beverages. We caught up with Andy about his top tips.
Tell us about the range. What are your favourites? That’s a hard question! I am a big fan of shiraz, especially the Barrosa Australia, and the Rhône Valley in France. I’m also a bit of riesling freak. Now I’m enjoying chardonnay from around the world. I try to list wines that people can match with great food and share with friends. If I had to pick a favourite now it would be the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz. What should laymen on the street know when buying a good wine? Taste different wines and fine a style that you enjoy, then get out of your comfort zone and try something new every so often. Find a retailer that will listen to you, share what you like and give feedback on any suggestions they give you. Share your wines with friends, enjoy them with great food and create a few good stories! What are your rules when buying wine? Drink what you enjoy, not what someone tells you to enjoy. Share your wines surrounded with great friends and loads of foodie experiences. Every so often take a risk and try something new. Just enjoy the moment.

home Statement Splashbacks By Ashleigh Cocker
Imagine walking into your home after a long stressful day at work, it’s raining and dark outside; you turn on the lights in your kitchen and bam! A bright lime green splashback brightens the room and your mood instantly.
S
plashbacks are seen in nearly every contemporary abode, such is the power of their practicality. But in 2019 kitchens, form is combining with function and splashbacks are making a style statement all of their own. They change the energy and vibe of the space instantly, allowing you to quickly and easily update the overall look and feel, or pull a colour scheme throughout the house. Whether it is a bright colour, your favourite floral arrangement or even black and white family snaps, the popularity of statement splashbacks is only set to increase in the latter of 2019. While bold colours and geometric designs may be the winners, chalkboard splashbacks can add practicality to their list of charms and a mirrored splashback can add much needed space to a room that’s on the small side. Whether you’re a passionate foodie who loves the challenge of a new recipe, or you simply love to embrace creativity in design, the kitchen may just be the creative canvas you need. The beauty here is that change is only a few tiles away, so choosing wisely is no longer a prerequisite.

your own dentistry,” Nicky says. “You definitely need a specialist for the job. I know about the common pitfalls that remodelers can fall into and I will work with you to achieve the very best kitchen or bathroom you can afford.” That very best design takes time. For Nicky, spending quality time with her clients at the beginning of the design process reaps huge benefits. “To produce the perfect design for their lifestyle I need to engage closely with my clients to find out how they live and use their kitchens. I also ask them to do research on sites such as www.houzz.co.nz to identify what appeals to them. Clients share what they like and that really helps to create the final design.” Nicky says that Kiwi kitchen designers are amongst the world leaders. “Keeping up to date with new trends and products is fundamental to my work and adds true value to my service to clients.” The NC Design Studio on the corner of Annex and Wigram Roads is open 7 days a week – by appointment only.
The gift of
Wise Guidance Lately I’ve found myself writing a lot about people rather than our real estate market. But given this is a people-focused industry, I’m going to continue the theme this month and look at what it means to be a mentor – and the art of mentoring. Part of the rationale for this is the recent parting of an incredible mentor, one of two mentors that my husband and I have had at our side for our entire careers. Their guidance and care over the decades has been enormous. When I entered this occupation I’d never even heard of the word ‘mentor’ and yet now, 25 years later, it’s considered a vital component for success and industry longevity. It is something that I subscribe to and now also find myself in the role of being. The word ‘mentor’ is defined as an experienced and trusted advisor, someone who guides and trains, and the recipient of this support is known as a ‘mentee’. Simply put, it could be described as helping out, but there’s nothing simple about being a mentor or mentoring.
Mentors can, and often do, share information and insights about their own career choices, providing wise counsel, emotional support and motivation, and acting as a vital role model. It’s not an easy path, especially the practice of being a role model, because you can’t rest on the adage of ‘do what I say, not what I do’. The bar for a mentor is higher than that. The mentoring I’ve been given has included having opportunities identified that I was either too busy or short-sighted to see, being assisted with solutions that my limited expertise at the time didn’t grasp, and being chastised from time to time (sometimes more severely than others!!!). I learnt lessons that were for life and I tried not to duplicate mistakes. They have been honest and open relationships lasting many, many years. Now I find myself in the role of a mentor and the bar has been set at a very high level given the experiences I’ve had. Some of the tasks I’m involved with are totally industry-driven, others of a more personal nature, and a good mentor can manage both without leaving you feeling lost or belittled.
The cherry on top.
So, if you are searching for the right person who is deeply in your corner and committed to your professional and personal wellbeing, look for these qualities. You never know, it might be the mentor that actually finds you. If you’re having trouble finding someone who encompasses this, email me and I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction.

DIVE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY Swimming pools are so much more than places to cool off in. They can create a fulfilling leisure lifestyle for families, a focus for gatherings and a wonderful way to enjoy exercise.
P
eople’s expectations of what a pool should be have also become more sophisticated. That’s a fact the Australian manufacturers of the Leisure Pools range of fibreglass swimming pools are well aware of. “There are always new pool designs being developed, along with new accessories that utilise the latest technology,” says Julie Hastings of Lagoon Pools, the South Island dealer for Leisure Pools. “To keep up to date with new products, we have recently attended the Leisure Pools’ biennial conference in Brisbane. Automation is the latest innovation.” Automation can bring a swimming pool into the 21st century by enabling pool owners to monitor and control their pool’s
equipment from their smart devices. “You can regulate your pool and spa heater when away and turn on your lights and fountain for a lovely aesthetic effect when you arrive home.” Aesthetics are certainly a major factor in today’s pool designs. “One of the most attractive pools we have is the Absolute. It’s fashionable and chic, yet versatile and very practical with its built-in spa integrated seamlessly into the overall pool design.” You can contact Lagoon Pools on Freephone 0800 927 282. The website www.lagoonpools.co.nz details the full range of services, including fountain installation and landscaping, as well as showcasing various pool options.

The architectural detailing both inside and out are of the highest quality in keeping with Generus Living Group’s established reputation of providing high-end retirement living. To ensure these buildings integrate seamlessly into their established surroundings, architectural features have been carefully articulated to maintain a residential scale. Wide, low roof forms with expansive eaves taking cues from midcentury modern architecture are employed to match the existing buildings. The façade is modulated at ground level with a rendered concrete block base that encapsulates outdoor patio areas, whereas the weatherboard-clad first floor is recessed to form generous private balconies. Invest in a good night’s sleep Gifted by Mother Nature from the sheep’s back to your back, merino is a miracle fibre. Imbued with the rugged beauty of New Zealand’s high country, created in icy temperatures, under the blue skies and sunshine, and within storms straight from the Southern Ocean, this material’s list of qualities can’t be beaten by anything created in a lab.
E
very month brings more bad news about the effect of synthetic material chemicals on our health and environment. With a third of our lives spent in bed, we really need to know that our well-earned rest is doing us good, rather than just the opposite. At Dreamwool Beds, David Henderson knows that the natural fibre of New Zealand’s own merino is the key to a night’s rest that is not only extremely comfortable, but
healthier and good for the environment too. “Imagine the peace of mind of jumping into bed at the end of the day, knowing you’re sleeping on something natural, rather than a bed full of stuff other manufacturers might prefer you didn’t know about,” says David. While once every bed manufacturer used Sample Boxes, clear display units showing the layers within a mattress, these have largely disappeared. Not so at
Dreamwool, where David is very proud to display mattress composition – without you having to ask. A queen size Dreamwool mattress contains 5–7.5 kilograms of merino wool, bringing its innate qualities of breathability, natural heating and cooling, wicking away of moisture, strength and resilience, odour resistance, quick drying, and static resistance. You just won’t beat that list with a 21st century techno fibre whose name ends with “...tex” or “… max”. “You get superior control of the bed’s microclimate,” David says. “Your sleeping temperature is more constant and the fibre density of merino wicks away excess vapour before it forms into perspiration on your skin.” Music to the ears of those suffering the dreaded night sweats, a reduction in dampness
also minimises the environment for dust-mites - great news for allergy sufferers and asthmatics. “The built-in merino mattress topper zips off for simple airing and cleaning too,” David says. The balance of the streamlined European-style mattresses is microcoils that allow air to pass through, and natural rubber latex. Then create a bespoke mattress choosing springs for a softer feel, or selecting from three densities of latex. Airflow is further enhanced because sides and bottom are not foam encased, and Dreamwool’s flexible slat bed system works in conjunction with the properties of the mattress. Designing the mattresses himself, David says he “enjoys creating top quality products that make a big difference to people’s lives”. He could easily copy other products but that’s not what the brand is about. “I’m constantly aiming to increase the level of comfort.” Begin your fresh start at Dreamwool, open Monday to Saturday (they’re sleeping on Sundays) with parking at the door. “Your best investment in tomorrow is a good night’s sleep.”

AN ARTIST IMPRESSION OF THE NEW SLIDE
Hanmer’s Hotspot There are some exciting new developments in the works near Canterbury’s northern border, so we caught up with Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa Executive General Manager Graeme Abbot about why this alpine oasis is the hottest place to head this year.
FABULOUS FOOD COFFEE & GIFTS
Can you tell us about the exciting new developments happening at the hot pools? Sure! It’s all go in New Zealand’s alpine spa village. We’ve begun construction on a new $4.5 million development that will add five new thermal pools and an aquatic thrill ride to the complex. These will be open in time for summer.

What sustainability measures have been incorporated into the new development? The new pools are designed to be super water efficient, with no holding tanks. We’ve also had to pioneer a new construction technique that saw them built on piles (instead of being dug into the ground) to protect tree roots below – this was a big process with 280 piles and added cost to the project, but was worth it. Readers may also remember that last year we became the first in New Zealand to have a micro-turbine generator that uses waste methane (that comes out of the ground with our thermal water) to generate electricity. It was an exciting project that powers around 10 percent of the complex’s electricity. Now we’re capturing the heat the generator produces and using that to reheat our thermal water – it’s a pretty cool innovation that will provide half of the energy for the new developments. You’ve got a slide naming competition running until 31 July, what sort of inspiration are you looking for? Something awesome! The slide will be the only one of its kind in New Zealand and, given the impressive nature of it, this new addition needs an equally impressive name. promise you, this one is going to get the blood pumping through your veins! We have had more than one person suggest ‘Dave’ as a name but we’re sorry, that won’t do! Why is this time of year a great time for people to head over your way? Winter brings with it the possibility of snow, making it our favourite time of the year at the pools. If you’ve ever been to the pools during a snowfall, you’ll know why! It really is magical soaking in the hot waters, watching snow gently fall around you and melting as it hits the thermal waters. It brings with it a real sense of tranquillity and stillness, which is great for the mind and soul.

What are your recommendations for things to do and see over your way for people from Christchurch heading over for the day or the weekend? The next time you come our way, take your time! Stay overnight instead of just making a daytrip. That will give you time to take a walk up Conical Hill, or along the Waterfall Track, before peddling through the village on the Rockets. Or jump on a horse or mountain bike to see another side to Hanmer Springs. Try out your mini golf skills and dine in at any one of the local spots. We have a new Forest Walk featuring huge sculptures in the forest (look out for the BFG) which the kids will love or you can jump in the car and head ‘over the back’ and discover some spots locals love (just ask a villager which way to go!). What other exciting things do you have in store over the next 12 months? We have something really cool planned for younger kids – stay tuned!

First open will be the new pools. These are set among river boulder terraces and native gardens. Bathers will soak in our famous mineral-filled waters with the sounds of waterfalls and nature around them. We’re also really excited about our new 13.5m high aquatic thrill slide. It will open in November and will be the only ride like it in New Zealand.

Consider an open bookcase boasting artworks that can be viewed from both sides, or a suspended louvre blind giving that perfect light and shade interplay. ow that it’s well and truly the middle of winter, it’s great to see ChristchurchNZ’s new central city winter campaign really taking shape. The message is simple: Baby Come Back. The retro-styled campaign is aimed at encouraging Christchurch residents back into our central city, and to promote foot traffic through the retail, bars and restaurants in the CBD over the winter months and beyond. It’s so positive and exciting to see a dedicated campaign aimed at supporting those businesses that have taken the lead in regenerating our CBD through their investments in our central city. It’s bold, vibrant, fun and showcases some of the great attractions in our own backyard. It’s also local. It was created in collaboration with central city businesses and stakeholders, ensuring it can be leveraged by all parties. To date we have seen positive trends in central city spending, with annual growth up by almost 15% compared to last year – driven by a combination of increased spending by local residents, residents from nearby regions and international visitors, with locals leading the charge. Locals who come in to explore what’s on offer in the four avenues will find a number of new developments – such as the new boutique cinema Lumière at The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora, and the soon-to-be completed Riverside Market, which will welcome more than 70 boutique vendors within the four inter-connected buildings in spring this year. It’s all adding up to a lot to come back to.

lmost a decade after the Canterbury earthquakes, we are nearing a major milestone in the regeneration of greater Christchurch, with the Crown and Christchurch City Council making good progress on achieving a global settlement agreement. Christchurch is now well placed to return to local leadership. Providing the Council with the opportunities to lead regeneration means the Crown will have less extraordinary involvement over time. The overall purpose of the global settlement agreement aims to provide certainty and clarity to the people of Christchurch about how regeneration will be managed in future. The agreement covers things like confirming future ownership, transfer and delivery of various assets, including implementation of existing agreements. The focus has very much been on getting a settlement that’s fair and equitable, affordable, fiscally responsible and sustainable, but also one that provides certainty and confidence on how regeneration will be managed in the future and who will support this. We are committed to moving forward confidently and hope to have the negotiations wrapped in the coming months – which will be a great achievement ahead of the local body elections in October. Implementation of the agreement will follow, noting timing considerations are yet to be finalised as part of the negotiations and will become clear once full scope is finalised. Ultimately the goal is to ensure regeneration momentum is maintained, and where possible, accelerated, and the implementation process should support that.

n support of our Government’s undertaking to invest two percent of GDP into research and development (R&D) by 2027, some excellent initiatives have emerged. These include: a $300 million ‘fund of funds’ that will help New Zealand start-ups grow and scale; the research and development tax incentive scheme designed to reward innovation; and a $106 million injection into ‘green’ innovation. These changes will help drive an increasingly productive New Zealand economy. The New Zealand Venture Investment Fund is committed to plenty of ‘fund of funds’ activity in the South Island – a commitment that we are keen to encourage and support through ongoing introduction of potential ventures and ensuring a steady pipeline of new startups with strong capability and focus in our city’s ecosystem. That start-up pipeline is so important for the future of our city. Ministry of Awesome and Young Enterprise Scheme are working hard on that pipeline at a high school level while the University of Canterbury (UC) and Ara are identifying capable future start-up founders and teams through their own entrepreneurship programmes. We are very excited to be working alongside the Ministry of Primary Industries to identify up and coming high growth ventures through our Startup Activation Sessions at Te Ōhaka in Christchurch and Blinc Innovation at Lincoln. Check out www.teohaka.co.nz and www.ministryofawesome.com for more information on these and future sessions.

T
he Meetings, Incentive, Conventions, Exhibition (MICE) industry of Christchurch has suffered greatly since 2011 with the loss our city’s convention centre, but it is exciting to have Te Pae on track for a 2020 opening, along with the Lyttleton Cruise Wharf; developments which will bring visitors into our inner city to experience what we love so much about Christchurch. Venues like the Arts Centre and the Christchurch Town Hall reopening is encouraging, with many local events taking place – it is now up to us to encourage national and international organisations to come back to Christchurch and spend their valuable visitor dollar with us. Recently, I was lucky to be part of an industry familiarisation trip of Australian MICE buyers. We demonstrated that Christchurch is back and ready to be one of New Zealand’s premier conference destinations for international events. At HOT Events, we have had to adapt – where previously we did a lot of Christchurch events, post 2011 we had to move our focus offshore. I am delighted to say that we are now managing a client’s annual conference for the first time in Christchurch since 2008. We have been very lucky in our company to also keep the amazing talent we have in Christchurch – this year we won large at the annual House of Travel Awards. I am extremely proud that we are competing and succeeding in an industry many thought was going to be extinct with the development of technology, and I can’t wait to show New Zealand’s newest city – Christchurch – to the MICE world again.
W
e’ve delivered roads, parks, laneways, a promenade and we have two of the largest buildings in the city under construction – Te Pae and the Metro Sports facility. But later this year Ōtākaro will take on a new type of project with the North Frame pedestrian bridge. The 32-metre-long, four-metre-wide bridge will connect Cambridge and Oxford Terraces between Colombo and Manchester Streets. The bridge sits on what we call a ‘desire line’, the route people would take over the bend in the Avon River if it were possible. It will make the trip through the city along the Avon River Precinct quicker for cyclists and pedestrians. With residential and other private developments planned for the North Frame, it makes sense for us to get in now to do the work, ahead of an influx of people living, working and visiting this area. Christchurch City Council expressed a desire for the bridge to be functional, simple and low maintenance, and this concept design reflects that. The bridge will run perpendicular to the river, to encourage approaching cyclists and scooter riders to reduce their speed and will mean the main vertical elements of the Taurapa sculpture, which was commissioned by the Seattle Sister City Committee in 1997, will not need to be moved. Work is likely to get underway around November and take about six months to complete. Out of our long list of construction projects, I’m confident this will be the only one with the added challenge of having to work around the trout spawning season.
I
n a place like Christchurch where, in recent years, there has been an intense focus on planning for the future, stopping to just focus on the ‘here and now’ can be tempting. While life should never be all work and no play, we need to choose our moments and, when it comes to the local economy, we must not allow any false sense of security to mask the challenges still ahead. With growth slowing and unemployment above the national average, the city is emerging from the recovery to find itself at economic crossroads with the amber lights flashing. The need for more people living in the central city identified in Regenerate Christchurch’s analysis of central city momentum is one challenge. Another is the need for about 70,000 extra workers to improve productivity and offset the effect of an ageing population over the next 15 years. ChristchurchNZ is leading the development of the Christchurch 2050 strategy to help the city address these and other challenges. All agencies will need to continue to work together in partnership with the private sector to develop strong connections between urban planning, regeneration and economic development. Regenerate Christchurch will continue to play its part, led by recently appointed Board Chair, Dr Thérèse Arseneau, who succeeded Sue Sheldon when her fixed term ended in June. I am looking forward to working with Thérèse and the wider board to not only build on the progress made under Sue’s leadership, but ensure the Christchurch 2050 strategy is supported by Regenerate Christchurch’s unique role in the regeneration ecosystem.

teffany Beck was convinced as a six-year-old she would be asked to join the Spice Girls. “I used to slide along the kitchen floor in my socks with my hairbrush microphone and rehearse four times a week – I was going to be named All Spice,” she laughs. Instead, now 29, she began her construction career in admin at Horncastle Homes – promoted after six months to Health and Safety Coordinator, then Manager. She then joined Contract Construction in 2017 in
her current role as Health and Safety Manager. “I just want to make sure everyone gets back to their families each night, as one day my dad didn’t, so I know what it’s like to not have him come home. I genuinely care about my team.” Steffany’s dad died in a freak accident in Hanmer Springs in 2013. A skilled carpenter, Michael Beck had brought his family out from Portland, Oregon in 2006. Next month she will launch her first EP of six songs. Two singles have already been released: Destined to You, a duet with her studio producer Eddie Simon, and her favourite, Worthy, a song about not feeling good enough, but still finding your worth. The other four country-pop ballads include Blue Eyed Girl, which is the title of the EP, Heart Beats For You, Am I Too Late, and then the singer/songwriter rocks it out with catchy grooves in her weekend anthem, Good Times. “I enjoy being a self-managed artist as I know exactly what’s happening – I get to steer the direction I want to go in creatively and not be put inside a cliché box.”

On top of her full-on but exciting double life, she volunteers as Events Co-ordinator for the Christchurch Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and she also assists organising conferences for Health and Safety Professionals New Zealand (HSPNZ). Contract Construction General Manager John Cleary says Steffany combines rare attitudes of being a team player and selfdriven in a pressured environment. “And all this is done with a smile and a happy demeanour,” he says. Steffany’s co-ordinating skills and love of music was born from singing in church and looking after the Primary Sunday School programme. She’s also auditioned for this year’s Coca Cola Christmas in the Park. “Dreams don’t have a timeline,” she says. “But if you keep consistently working at them – someday they’ll come true. However, I couldn’t have succeeded without my husband, Mingo, supporting and inspiring me day and night. “Ultimately, I am drawn to health and safety, and music, as both are about connecting people and I can make a difference.” For the music links, follow her on https:// www.facebook.com/steffanybeckmusic/

engineers flew into Christchurch weekly, completing civil and structural earthquake damage assessments for hundreds of buildings throughout Canterbury. In February 2013, a permanent office was developed in Wainoni during the Christchurch recovery effort. It has since expanded to offer Cantabrians professional engineering and architectural advice, design and construction observation services, and work on commercial building projects. The team is skilled at new residential and low-rise commercial builds, drafting, architectural designs, alterations, additions and town planning and, as it grows, plans to expand into surveying and civil work. Lured by the historic enchantment of the SALT district, small businesses are returning – breathing community spirit back into a very unique part of town.
bove Your Space, at the heart of this redevelopment, has an evolving portfolio of boutique office spaces from 10-100sqm. “This was always known as the edgier part town – and it’s now getting legs,” Director Shaun Stockman says. “Rents are still lower here and the offerings are more interesting. You’re right among the hip restaurants, bars and shops.” Shaun ensured Stockman Group’s sympathetic rebuild of these historic spaces by investing in the highest standard design. “It’s so we can still go ‘wow’ in 20 years’ time.” The backlit stencilled steel staircase and American 1930s chandeliers are such examples in the Billens building. He reminds us, as construction costs soar, these priceless city spaces are finite. Currently, space is available at Bonnington, 225 High Street, with its original façade of grand arched windows. Common rooms are decked out with contemporary creature comforts, with a kitchen and boardroom on each level. Polished floors, high-stud ceilings, original artwork by Andrew Evans, designer lighting and the authentic rawness of concrete and steel create the vibe. The redeveloped spaces of WL Brown and Duncans 135 also have limited space, and Ruby Black, with its gracious façade, is on track for February. Once a tenant of Above Your Space, there’s flexibility of a seamless side move to new offices within the group. “Cantabrians may forget the city took 150 years to build – in comparison, it’s shaping up quickly to be a very modern city.” Visit www.aboveyourspace.co.nz or phone Anna Morawiec on 022 059 7620.

GEAR UP FOR WINTER When the temperatures start dropping, it’s time to think about protecting yourself and your team from the elements.

ith the cold’s ability to lead to fatigue and affect decision-making, it can also lead to an increase in injuries. Staff are also more inclined to take shortcuts to finish the job and get back to the warm, which can also lead to injuries or damage to plant and equipment. Even moderately cold temperatures can increase the risk of workplace incidents as the cold reduces manual dexterity, fingertip sensitivity and muscle
strength. Canterbury can have some tough, frosty mornings and Christchurch Site Safe Safety Advisor Trudy Hodge says warming up before getting into any hard yakka is always useful in avoiding cold-start injuries. “Stretching and moving the body’s mechanical workings before digging and lifting is always a good idea.” Consider the following controls when working in the elements.

Training • Workers and supervisors should be trained to recognise the symptoms of cold exposure. • Employees should be informed about PPE, safe work practices and emergency procedures in case of injury. PPE • Clothing should be worn in multiple layers; the bottom layer can be a range of materials including polypropylene, polyester or wool. • The outer layer should be hi-vis, rain and windproof and allow for easy opening and removal. • Merino is excellent for warmth and keeping the skin dry and some thermals are designed to draw the sweat away from the body. • Exposed areas such as the head, hands and feet are just as important as the body. Gloves can become bulky and affect handling, so a better option is to provide warm air blowers or insulated handles on tools. • Buy footwear that is well padded, insulated and made from materials such as leather, which
allows the shoes to breathe. A great deal of heat is lost through the head, so if a hard hat is necessary, wear a fitted polypropylene or merino beanie underneath. Equipment • Plant, equipment and tools should be designed so they can be operated without having to remove PPE. • The more complex or fiddly the activity, the greater the likelihood that PPE will be discarded, increasing risk. Plan • To avoid harsh winter conditions, plan work appropriate for the weather. • If you cannot be adequately protected from the effects of the cold, then work must be suspended or rescheduled to remove the risk of harm. Fatigue Fatigue is a state of exhaustion, either mental, physical or both. Signs include: • Irritability • Being disengaged, slurred speech • Clumsiness • Being forgetful Ways to counter it include: • More breaks than normal if work is demanding and the conditions are harsh. • Drink water, not sugary drinks which can dehydrate you. • Ensure there is suitable shelter. Food, shelter and wellbeing • Food and liquid intake are essential to maintain body heat and prevent dehydration. • WorkSafe says if continuous work is carried out in temperatures below 0°C, heated shelters such as cabins or ‘smoko’ rooms should be available. • A strict timetable for breaks should be put in place to allow employees to warm up and change clothes if needed. • Always have a hot brew on hand to keep core temperatures up.

Elegant Architecture By Angela Waller
The rebuild of an award-winning 1970s abode in Cashmere took cues from its original plans, while modernising and reinterpreting the design into a functional family home. Shortlisted at the recent Canterbury NZIA Awards, the ‘Courtyard House’ features a dramatic promenade entry enclosed in glass and vertical louvres, revealing the heart of the home – a private central courtyard.
T
he formation evolved from a deference for the original house, which featured a courtyard-like entrance. The new central design was developed to take advantage of passive design considerations, such as enhanced natural ventilation, natural light and wind protection. Living spaces were arranged to encourage these features and the stunning views of the Port Hills, says Wulf Borrmeister, of Borrmeister Architects. “The central courtyard plan offers visual interest and diversity between spaces, where passages between rooms offer a brief moment to appreciate the natural, well-established garden area at the core of the home.” The home features an open plan family/dining area, wellappointed kitchen, cosy snug and flexible living areas; the

bedroom spaces are framed by ribbons of glazing at ceiling level, allowing extra light to filter into the home, connecting the garden and courtyard. The elegant compositions and natural, sustainable materials featured throughout the home contribute to the warm atmosphere and economical living spaces – from the horizontal roof bands, oiled cedar weatherboards and raw concrete blocks of the street façade, to the cantilevered roof overhangs and glass-framed cedar walls at the rear and centre of the building. Borrmeister Architects always strives to create architecture that integrates into the natural world, thoughtfully and respectfully. Visit www.borrmeister.co.nz for more information.

Walls of green

Plants and greenery have long been a great way to incorporate colour and life into our interior spaces, but in 2019, we’re taking that to a new level with the living wall – not only do they look good, they’re good for you too! Easily plant a wonderfully eye-catching and eco-friendly feature wall inside or outside with one of these ideas.
3. 4.
Trellis walls (either inside or outside) both look super stylish and purify the air at the same time. Attach small pots to the trellis and fill with an abundance of plants that you fancy – succulents are particularly popular – or keep it simple with vines of ivy or a climbing plant woven through the framework. Spray-painted tin cans make for absolutely adorable, not to mention extremely affordable, planters – punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage, spray paint, mount them to your garden fence, fill with soil and pick your plants! Grow your herbs right where you need them – in your kitchen, of course! There’s a myriad of ways to make a hanging herb feature. One idea we’re loving is to mount bars on the wall and hang small pots from them by S-shaped hooks, curtain rings or small hanging baskets – the possibilities are endless! For a contemporary look that’s hassle-free and amateur-friendly, fill a full-wall bookshelf with potted plants. Go wild with a variety of different indoor plants – money plants, trailing plants, ferns… don’t be afraid to ‘branch’ out!

COMPLETE FIRE RATING SOLUTIONS Natural light and fresh air are the holy grail of commercial space and office workers everywhere, but so often Building Code regulations prevent the installation of standard windows, let alone windows that open up to the outside world.
B
uildings on a city block can end up with windows front and back, but long sides of solid concrete, making artificial light and air conditioning systems 24/7 unavoidable. However, exciting solutions are close at hand: the innovative team at Smoke Control New
Zealand can greatly enhance the versatility of your building project with their window systems that don’t just meet but can surpass code requirements. The windows are finished to look like standard aluminium windows, but offer so much more.
The new build at 88–92 Cashel Street in Cashel Mall, the site of the old Zetland Hotel and Café Bleu, is one of several buildings that Smoke Control has provided windows for in the Christchurch rebuild. It sits a mere 250mm away from its neighbour – so standard windows were not an option. Thanks to Smoke Control however, the building has both natural light and fresh air, with further benefits, including energy efficiency gained through power saving, thermally broken frames, acoustic performance, and of course, fire ratings from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The windows are designed to be self-closing should a fire start, and work using an arm fitted with a fusible link that fails in a fire, closing the window automatically. Further, an electronic option links to the building’s fire alarm system. Without these self-closing systems, opening windows would not be permitted by the Building Code.
Matt Cockerell, Project Manager for Smoke Control New Zealand, has been installing windows for 15 years. “The benefits of these products are huge – as well as light, air, energy savings and acoustics, these windows stop fire spreading to adjacent buildings in both directions”. Smoke Control New Zealand is not just leading the way in fire rated windows; they offer an extensive range of products to meet every requirement. Their fire curtains and shutters, static smoke and fire baffles, fire doors and natural ventilation range can be tailored to a package bespoke to your project – and you’re backed all the way by a top-of-the-market technical support and maintenance team. Matt says the company is innovative and lead the field in design and expertise. There are five engineers the wider team can call on to find solutions for every situation encountered on site.
