“Always remember that life is precious, you are precious and treat yourself accordingly.” - Dr Libby Weaver
W
e live in a world of self-help books, of Google diagnoses and of armchair psychology. We’re constantly trying to be the best versions of ourselves and the highest bar often isn’t the expectations others set for us; it’s the expectations we set for ourselves. As a goal-focused A-type personality, I love aiming high and the constant quest for advancement. But where does that leave what we already have in our lives? When speak to those who are dying about what they’re going to miss the most in the world, it’s never the pressure, the deadlines or even the success that comes from meeting all of the above. Instead it’s the simple things they say they will miss the most; the feeling you get when your significant other tells you they love you; the feeling of your child’s armsABC AUDITED wrapped tightly around your neck; your dog’s excitement when you walk in the door at the end of the day. So if that’s what we’re going to miss, why not fill our lives with more of that? Don’t forget that happiness is a choice. It’s time to stop striving for ‘your best life’ and start striving for a good life. AUDITED If you’re still in doubt, head along to see Dr Libby Weaver later this month, she’s likely to tell you, “You are enough, you have always been enough and you always will be enough”.

entire community of ‘Queens’; women who are fighting loneliness, sexism, postnatal depression and body issues, and she’s done it through love, kindness and humour. We caught up with Constance ahead of her TEDxChristchurch talk on 25 August.
How excited are you to be heading to Christchurch for the TEDxChristchurch event in August? There was some divine intervention that made TEDxChristchurch be the place I was asked to give this talk. New Zealand is my favourite place in the world. Never has a country embraced me like New Zealand has and when I visited Christchurch two years ago, my shows sold out and I was completely blown away by the crowd, almost like I had finally come home. I couldn’t be more excited to share this experience with Christchurch, it’s a new experience for me and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervously pushing the boundaries of what I’m comfortable with, which makes me happy I’ll have such friendly faces in the crowd to keep me on track. What are you going to be talking about? I’ll be talking about my experiences with my blog and life taking off in public and how quickly that was followed by online bullying, how that has affected me and what I think we can all do to make a difference to the bully culture we live in online. You have developed a global following by empowering women with your messages about self-love and supporting other women. Why do these messages resonate so strongly with you? The messages of self-love and women supporting women resonate so deeply with me because at a point in my life I realised how lonely I was, I saw an invisible barrier between me and the women I met, and I realised that when that barrier was broken down I was completely fulfilled and at my happiest. I realised that in order to get there with each other, we needed to love ourselves. Lack of confidence as women was what made us competitive, which was making us lonely. Once I came to this place, I wanted to share the message as far and wide as I could to bring about a sisterhood and village that I knew we could all thrive in. Or maybe I just wanted a job that included a f**k load of girls’ nights and drunken 3am conversations in the toilets like, “No you’re prettier… I’ve always had a girl crush on you!” That’s where the magic happens. What have been some of your most powerful posts in terms of engagement? I think the biggest post I wrote was about communicating with our kids, how we need
to stop thinking we failed if our toddlers are whinging, teens are complaining and kids are fighting. It’s the quiet kids, it’s the kids who are trying to disappear, not communicating and locking themselves in their rooms, that we need to worry about. A child therapist explained to me that it’s not so much about how the kids are communicating with you but the fact that they are that’s important. And it resonated because so many women think we are doing a bad job if our house is chaotic, or our kids just screamed “I hate my life!” But that’s all normal stuff and we need to be a bit easier on ourselves. Keep an eye out for kids that aren’t communicating at all; they are bigger warning signs than a toddler throwing a tantrum. Really we all just need someone to tell us that we are doing OK. The blogs that remind people that they are doing OK, that there is a bigger picture, that everything is going to be just fine, are the ones that do well. So much of the internet is designed to make mums and women scared; “If you don’t buy this you are screwing up your kids,” or “If you don’t do this your husband will cheat”. We leave the internet feeling like crap. People leave my page thinking….. it’s gonna be OK and even if it’s not, Con’s definitely got it worse! How does it feel to be making such a positive difference to women throughout the world? You never sit back and say, “Wow, look what I’ve done”, you just sit back and say “Wow, what else can I do?” It’s terrible but it’s the way we are designed. I wish I spent more time enjoying my accomplishments and taking the things women say to me on board and less time pressuring myself to do more, but I think that’s just the way the human brain is designed. It seems these days that people – particularly women – can’t do anything right. Why is it so important that we stop this culture of ‘mummy shaming’? I think mum shaming has peaked and it is dying; I hope so anyway. Women don’t really judge other women; they judge themselves and it makes them pretend to judge other women as a way of deflecting their self-doubt. My mantra: “When you can love you, you can love me”. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? Who the hell knows? Life is crazy. I want to open a shop for my clothing label, but I also want to give away everything I own, buy a bus, teach the kids what our country really looks like while I vlog my life to the world. There is always the option of nothing. The ocean calls, it calls every day and that might just be enough. To find out more about TEDxChristchurch, check out page 26. Metropol August 1, 2019 9

You’ve had a pretty massive year, how is everything going? Everything has finally settled into a beautiful space. It took a while to adjust to life in Sydney for Dancing with The Stars, I missed my kids and don’t love the media world, then even coming home took some adjusting too, back to a world of forest and ocean and piles of washing. But now, the sun is out and I feel extremely happy.

FROM DELINQUENT TO DOCTOR By Melinda Collins
Paul Wood was imprisoned long before he set foot in Paremoremo Prison; locked up in a mindset that would plot the map that got him there. “Anyone looking at me in my teenage years might have muttered to themselves that I was heading for prison. They were wrong only in the sense that I was already there,” he says.
T
wenty-four years ago, Paul committed the ultimate crime, but he’s spent the intervening years working hard to both understand and harness the demons that set him on the path that would get him here. Paul earnt his place in the prison system, but he also earnt his way out. Along the way he also earnt himself the initials ‘Dr’ that he can now wear proudly in front of his name. Paul Wood was the first person in New Zealand to progress through undergraduate studies to attain a bachelor’s and master’s degree while in prison and was the first person to begin a doctorate while still incarcerated. He wears many more hats than that. Paul Wood is a Doctor of Psychology, a motivational speaker, leadership and personal

development specialist, media personality, loving husband and father. It is perhaps his journey that makes him so good at wearing them; a journey he has captured in How to escape from prison; the remarkable story of how one man defied the odds’. While the book catalogues his way into prison, his journey through the system and his exit out the other end, perhaps most importantly, it focuses on helping others break out of their own prisons. Because, while Paul was physically incarcerated, he came to realise that most of the people he was inside with – and many on the outside who think they are ‘free’ – are in fact locked up in mindsets that prevent them from living full, authentic lives. “They are imprisoned by their beliefs about
I didn’t know what I’m doing now was something you could do; the key thing is going, ‘what’s a small thing that I can do now?’ There are steps backwards, sideways; it’s about continuing that momentum with those small steps.” While the take-away of the book is going to look different for everyone, he would like to see it help people to be more accepting of failure, to recognise it as an opportunity. “Failure is a key ingredient of growth,” he says. “If you’re not experiencing failure occasionally, you’re not striving to fulfil your potential; you’re playing it safe and not exposing yourself to opportunities and risk. “Struggle is normal; life is challenging; that’s not an indictment against us, that’s how we learn and grow. We make the mistake of thinking our job is to be ‘good’ at things – being a parent, a manager, an employee. If you can re-conceptualise the key deliverable, the key success factor as getting ‘better’, not being ‘good’, then you’ll realise failure is an opportunity to get there.” If you keep focusing on the end point, it can be so overwhelming that you never get started, he says. “We’re all familiar with the quote ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, but the full quote is actually ‘but they were laying bricks every hour’. It’s about focusing on small steps that make big steps over time. “It’s one of the rich ironies of my life’s journey that I had to go to prison to learn how to be free,” Paul says. “Your freedom is there for the taking, all you need to do is fight for it.”

their limitations, about who they are supposed to be and what they are or aren’t supposed to feel,” Paul says. “That’s as much of a waste of human potential as anything the criminal justice system has to offer.” The reason he’s so effective at convincing people that adversity can be the catalyst of growth and that transformational change is achievable? Because he’s living proof of just what is possible, no matter the size of the mountain that needs to be conquered. So is there ever a mountain too high the climb? “I think the potential to change your life is always with you, but it requires you to take ownership and to start taking the steps required to make that change,” he says. “You can’t reach your potential without support, but taking small steps every day, there’s always a path back.” The first of those steps, is taking ownership. It’s a crucial step in reparation, recognising that your decision paved the way for your journey, Paul says. It requires “bravery and commitment, but there’s no more empowered position you could take in life”. While we like to have a narrative; a ‘lightbulb’ moment where suddenly we’re on the right path and it’s smooth sailing here on in, Paul says real change is an incremental process and it’s about putting one foot ahead of the other every single day. “You just need to start taking the right steps with no idea where they will lead you. You don’t need to know the destination in order to land somewhere great. I wasn’t familiar with the life I’ve got now;

fter her role as Hagley Ferrymead Community Board Chairwoman, Sara was voted in as Councillor for the Heathcote Ward in 2016. Her new position was very motivating. “I was now in a job that I can really help make a difference in the wider community,” she says. “I didn’t like the idea of puffing my way to work on a regular bike, but believed in the cycleways’ potential to cut emissions, so did some research and bought an e-bike. By car it’s 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic, but on my bike it’s 24 minutes every day.” The e-bike gave some base fitness and adding in a little jogging led to her entering the 10km section of the Christchurch Marathon in 2017. Sara went from an overweight middle-aged mum with three to the healthiest she’s been in decades. This January, Sara sold her own vehicle and now mainly cycles, busses or occasionally uses Yoogo Share – a shared 100 percent electric car fleet. “If we all didn’t use our cars for just
one workday each week, it would bring Christchurch’s daily traffic numbers down by 20 percent.” Taking her coffee KeepCup everywhere, she has only used six takeaway cups since being elected – and they’re drinks others have bought her. The Templeton family haven’t used plastic shopping bags for a decade – only cloth, mainly ones she makes. She uses solid-bar shampoos to omit plastic bottles, eats less meat, and buys organic where possible. “Transitions are never easy when it comes to social movements and large-scale change,” she says. “For example, the Suffragette movement took three petitions before victory. We tend to over estimate what we can achieve in a year and underestimate what we achieve in a generation.” Now it’s on to the next personal goal. Sara made a pact to buy no more clothing for a year. “On average, an item of clothing only gets worn seven times. It has made me look into my wardrobe to find a few things I had forgotten about! “My floral blazer from the
Woolston Sallies and my Jane Daniels jacket from Time and Time Again in Sumner still get complements. We’re far more critical of ourselves than others are. No one really cares how often we re-wear something. People may have noticed her necklace from social enterprise Bead and Proceed. Each coloured wooden bead represents one of 17 United Nations sustainable development goals. Sara chose five that represent what mostly matters to her – good health and wellbeing, gender equality, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, and peace, justice and strong institutions. The Coastal Pathway is where Sara recharges. She says the clear space on the wide, well-lit walk is so good for the brain. It’s here, or while cycling, that she now does her thinking, planning, and practising Te Reo. “It’s the small things we do every day. It’s not all or nothing – it’s just making a change. And we don’t need to be perfect at everything.”

New Zealand’s fastest mum By Tracey Edwardes

competitive sprinter, the 34-yearold holds the title of New Zealand’s fastest mum, with three children under 10 in tow. The surprising twist on her inspiring journey is that just over two years ago she was overweight, unfit and struggling with depression. She is now training to represent New Zealand in the Oceania Masters Athletics next month, with four other mum sprinters. Then it’s off to the World Masters Athletics Championships in Toronto next August. At high school, Middleton Grange, Helena felt like an ugly duckling even though she was an all-rounder academically, also winning a fashion competition. However, her stand-out talent was that she was fast. “But that was the reason others didn’t want to pair up with me at PE. The message

I gave myself was that no one would want to be my friend, as nobody likes that kid who beats everyone,” she says. “I then massively regretted giving up athletics. I couldn’t even watch the Commonwealth Games on TV. There was also a high financial cost of competing, so I didn’t follow through.” Debilitating depression clouded her twenties, including post-natal depression and bulimia. Bringing up terrified children during the earthquakes also added stress. She underwent three surgeries for endometriosis, and an earlier back injury still requires weekly physiotherapy. She also has mild hip dysplasia to boot. “But one day I realised that only person who is going to make my life better is me. I decided I needed to get moving again.”

downs a protein shake for lunch. “But I make sure I have a massive bowl of greens with dinner. I eat with the family and healthier during the week, and more relaxed in the weekend. I’m a massive foodie, I love cream in my coffee – and I eat cake!” She bakes and decorates exquisite cakes for her children’s birthdays. Seemingly always on the run on and off the track, Helena’s creativity is yet another strength. Running her own business for over a decade, to enable her to work from home, the busy mum has a business which fundraises for charities by transforming school children’s drawings into necklaces and key chains. As part of her own fundraising for both events – the world champs cost a hefty $40,000 – she’s working towards sponsorship. Helena’s positivity and inspiration is infectious, and is why she enjoys public speaking, having engaged with an audience of hundreds in the past.“I’m very keen to offer inspiring talks for businesses,” she says. Helena acknowledges that even with all the highs and lows, it is the overall balance that grounds the bubbly, bouncy athlete in her race to succeed. To support Helena with her fundraising for both Masters events, she can be contacted via Facebook www.facebook. com/healthy.by.definition. Also track her progress on Instagram www.instagram.com/healthy. by.definition, find her jewellery business at www.facebook.com/ creativefundraisingnz, or contact Helena to find out how to make a donation.

With only 14 weeks to train, she ran the 21km Christchurch Marathon – just after her youngest turned one – having barely run more than 5km in her life. However, the event also included a 100m race, in which Helena competed exceptionally well against much younger women in their 20s. “Strangely enough I find jogging exhausting. Very few people are built to sprint. I was built to sprint and jump – I’m really bouncy.” Completely hooked, she then enlisted the help of coach Andrew MacLennan of GFS (Get Fast and Strong) who has helped other top athletes with their careers. After the Oceania Masters, she will compete at the World Masters in the sprints, hurdles and jumps, plus the heptathlon, 200m, 800m, hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and even the javelin, which she is now learning. Beating some national records as well as bringing back gold medals – plural – is Helena’s goal! Weight training, running and technical training each twice a week, every week, are all important. “There can be an impact of up to five times your body weight as your feet hit the ground.” Her husband Adrian, Facilities Manager for Life Church and its La Vida Conference & Community Centre, fully encourages her dream. “My half marathon running friend Julianne is also an awesome supportive friend from my church community.” A light breakfast is always timed an hour or so before training. Close to 400 patients were seen at the Charity Hospital last year and this is expected to grow to 600 in the coming year as awareness about the hospital’s services increases. These investigations are extremely important as rectal bleeding is one of the main symptoms of bowel cancer, which is a common cause of cancer deaths in New Zealand, claiming 1200 lives per year. Some patients were found to have the early stages of cancer which would otherwise not have been detected. Patients with rectal bleeding aged under
50 years old are not seen by the Canterbury District Health Board. “While older patients do make up the majority of colorectal cancer patients, international and recent New Zealand research shows clearly that an increasing number of men and women under 50 are being diagnosed with these cancers and that these patients require more timely investigation,” says Christchurch colorectal surgeon and Charity Hospital Trustee, Professor Frank Frizelle. The busy endoscopy service is almost completely staffed by volunteers, including surgeon Ian Bradford (pictured right). To be eligible, patients require a referral from their GP.
SURGEONS VOLUNTEER AT HOSPITAL Urologist Frank Kueppers is the latest surgeon at the Charity Hospital performing vasectomies. Frank says it is sad that Canterbury needs a charity hospital and that so many needy patients do not even make the waiting list in the public health system. “The Charity Hospital is a fantastic set-up, very professional and it’s great being able to help these people who otherwise wouldn’t be seen.” Frank is a urologist at Christchurch Hospital, a consultant at Urology Associates and trains surgeons at the Fiji School of Medicine in Suva. He also keeps busy as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at University of Otago, Christchurch and a trustee of Canterbury Urology Research Trust. The hospital has a team of 300 volunteer surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, reception and support staff but always needs more people to share their caring expertise. To gift your skills and become a volunteer, visit the hospital website, www.charityhospital.org.nz or email reception@charityhospital.org.nz.

CHRISTMAS FUNCTION ALL WRAPPED UP
Sue and Phil Bagshaw have been appointed as Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
BAGSHAWS HELP CANTABRIANS The Bagshaws are well-known within New Zealand and overseas. Both Phil and Sue are a force to be reckoned with, spending many hours helping Cantabrians in need by establishing the Canterbury Charity Hospital and the Youth Health Hub. Dr Sue Bagshaw was recently made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit as a well-known youth health advocate. Providing young people with doctor’s appointments, counselling and addiction support services all under one roof has gained traction throughout the country. After several different locations within the central city, Sue’s dream is to raise $10 million to establish a permanent Youth Health Hub on land in Salisbury Street.
Both Sue and Phil Bagshaw have been appointed as Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit; Sue in 2002 and Phil this year. Phil, Sue and their colleagues established the Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust in 2004 in Harewood Road, Bishopdale, providing free day surgery to people who have been turned down by the public health system. The hospital has expanded to include three buildings - a day surgery, endoscopy unit and oral surgery - offering a range of services to Cantabrians in need. Phil still operates as a volunteer each week and is chairman of the Trust, while Sue is a trustee.
Gala
Christmas work functions can typically be stressful to organise but the Charity Hospital’s annual fundraising event on Friday 29 November at the Air Force Museum is the perfect solution. “Colleagues, staff or clients will enjoy a night to remember and it can also be a night off for the person who usually has to organise their company’s function, saving them all the hassle and time,” says Rosie Graham, Fundraising Co-ordinator at the Charity Hospital. “The Gala is always hugely popular, attracting a range of local Christchurch business people, medical professionals, lawyers and the media. “Many of our guests have attended the Gala every year and always have a great night out. The Air Force Museum is an awesome venue.” Tables for 10 guests cost $1700 (or $170 per guest) including a three-course plated dinner, beverages, dancing and an amazing selection of auction items. Tickets can be purchased from the front page of the Charity Hospital’s website www.charityhospital.org.nz. For more information about this year’s Christmas Gala, or to donate an auction item, please email rosie@charityhospital.org.nz.

Heading East
By Melinda Collins
I let Adam McGrath select the meeting point for our interview; there’s more than a bit of irony that the frontrunner for local band The Eastern sends me east! Upshot Coffee’s Heathcote location is much like Adam himself; real, authentic, perhaps a little rough around the edges, but that’s what makes them both so very good. Housed in a modified 20ft shipping container, Upshot Coffee shares its Bridle Path Road premises with a working farm and offers an impressive rural outlook.

t’s also Adam’s local when he’s in town, but he’s been on the road since last September, such is the muso life. Soon after we catch up he’s heading off to a sell-out show in Queenstown, then it’s back to Europe. It’s a powerful story for someone who never expected to amount to much – “best case scenario, join the army or play rugby league” – and, while others speak of music as being their saviour, for Adam, it really was. “When I was a kid my dad did this thing where basically stolen things would end up in our house on their way to other places. So you’d always have an extra TV or something showing up and one day they put a stereo in my room. “My dad gave me some records and showed me how to use it and I just fell in love with records. That was it for me man; there was really nothing else. “I never thought I would play music or could play music; I just loved music.” But it turns out he can play music; how else do you explain being able to live off music “for maybe 14 of the last 15 years, maybe even a bit longer”. “I basically decided a long time ago that I just wasn’t going to do anything else, no matter what, and just see what would happen,” Adam explains. “But every day I wake up and still don’t have to go to a day job, so that’s a good thing.”
Aimee Cane Photography
He’s thankful for the worlds music has opened up to him – both literally and figuratively. He’s thankful too that the band has helped him build a family; “most specifically Jess, Shanks, Jono, Hopley and everyone involved. “If it does all end tomorrow I can say well at least that happened and that’s a really nice thing.” That family – The Eastern – is “a string band that roars like a punk band, that swings like a gospel band, that drinks like a country band, that
works like a bar band, that hopes like folk singers, and sings love songs like union songs, and writes union songs like love songs, and wants to slow dance and stand on tables, all at the same time”. He works at his craft every day. “I’m happy to get a song when it shows up, I just hang out and wait for them to come and I found the more you work on it, the more they show up; they just want to make sure you’re worth it.” And Adam most certainly is.

Daredevil in Disguise Scout is a typically energetic four-month-old Jack Russell Terrier who loves being involved with everything that is going on. One morning recently, Scout was a little too close to the action when a wooden pallet fell on her. When the team at Wigram Vet examined Scout, it was not immediately obvious what injury had occurred, but she was lame on her left hind leg.
A
fter sedation and x-rays, a distal femoral epiphyseal fracture with approximately 35 degrees of displacement was identified for poor Scout. This injury is essentially a fracture at the growing zone (epiphysis) of the femur, at the end of her femur close to the knee, Veterinarian Geoff Mehrtens says. “Although outwardly the limb looks relatively normal, such
a fracture would have serious effects on her limb as she grows if it was allowed to heal in the abnormal position.” Geoff says surgery was the best option and Scout’s physically active family wanted the best possible outcome for her; she is after all, an important member of the family ski team. “It is a tricky surgery where we essentially must balance the
distal knob of bone that forms the knee back on to the shaft of the femur with two semiparallel metal pins. The postoperative phase is particularly important with these injuries. We must balance the need for confinement because the fracture repair has substantial stresses, with the need for maintaining function, movement and muscle strength. Due to the
fracture being so close to the stifle joint, discomfort and lack of use can lead to muscle wasting and decreased mobility of the joint.” Wigram Vets started Scout on a programme of physical therapy soon after surgery, managed by their canine rehab guru Kate Donald. This involved massage, range-of-motion exercises and some sessions in the hydrotherapy treadmill. The implanted pins were removed at an early stage to enhance the recovery of the joint. “Scout is a model patient and has made an amazing recovery from a potentially crippling injury, because of the holistic integrated repair strategy she has received,” Geoff says. “However, she has not modified her daredevil behaviour and will, I am sure, continue to support Wigram Vet in the future!”

Capturing Southern Beauty The beauty of the South Island landscape has been captured by one of the country’s leading watercolourists, Bernadette Parsons, in a new exhibition at Geraldine’s McAtamney Gallery this month.
T
he gallery’s new premises on Geraldine’s main street (40a Talbot Street) is playing the prestigious host to the exhibition, entitled Haast, which features 12 paintings, mostly painted on location in the Haast
Pass area, evoking the solitude and serenity found in the mountains, bush and coast. The Waikato-based artist often makes her way to our southern spot, drawing inspiration from the beauty of the landscapes.
She started painting more than 20 years ago, moved by watching a watercolourist work, and clearly demonstrates a deep connection with the landscapes she turns her talented hand to. “Watercolour allows me to interpret the landscape, to find what is unique,” she says. “This is the main thing in any painting. I also love watercolour’s spontaneity: it can be strong and wilful, yet there’s a transparency and softness too.” While working as a practice nurse and raising four children, Bernadette immersed herself in art, every chance she could, seeing as many international tutors as she could. “I love landscapes, in particular trees, as a couple we’ve got a business growing trees, but a lot of it comes down to how you ‘see’ a landscape,” Bernadette explains. “Artists all have their own unique way of seeing a landscape.” Today, Bernadette has
numerous awards under her artistic belt, including the Best Watercolour in Show at the Easter Show and the award for Most Successful Artist in Show. Her work also features in the books ‘New Zealand in Watercolour’ and ‘Impressions of New Zealand’ by Denis Robinson. Gallery Director Carolyn McAtamney says Bernadette is one of the country’s leading watercolourists and the proof is in the finished product. “Her ability to capture the moments of stillness and peace we feel in the natural world is breathtaking. Bernadette has mastered the loose brushstroke in a way that is second to none and has a style that New Zealanders adore.” Find the gallery at 40a Talbot Street, Geraldine, opposite the Village Inn. TEDxChristchurch Turns Ten!
Sparking deep discussion and connection since 2010, TEDxChristchurch is celebrating double digits this year with a milestone event that’s bigger and better than ever before – TEDxChristchurch 2019: Tūrangawaewae.
F
or the first time, the TEDxYouth@Christchurch has teamed up with TEDxChristchurch to bring an entire weekend (24-25 August) of TEDx celebrations to the city of Ōtautahi. The two teams have joined Cultural Partner Matapopore Charitable Trust to develop their most inclusive theme ever: Tūrangawaewae –
meaning ‘a place to stand’ or ‘place of belonging’. “For nine years, we have opened every TEDxChristchurch with a mihi, delivered by mana whenua, to acknowledge and show our respect to the traditional people of this land,” TEDxChristchurch licensee and curator Kaila Colbin says. “Now, for our tenth edition of TEDxChristchurch, we are honoured to progress
our journey towards bicultural practice, by partnering with Matapopore to integrate tikanga Māori into the heart of our event.” For the first time, our spectacular Christchurch Town Hall will set the scene for the two inspirational events. Both will feature activations from HIT Lab NZ, interactive art installations, a pop-up Scorpio
The
Books bookstore and branded merchandise (for the first time!). Day 1, Saturday 24 August, will be brought to us by the TEDxYouth@Christchurch team, who have been carefully curating a collection of around 12 speakers/performers for a half day event of ‘ideas worth spreading’ at the James Hay Theatre. Specifically produced for under 25s, by under 25s, TedxYouth@Christchurch will hear inspiring speeches from the likes of talented comedian and poet Ray Shipley; young entrepreneur and Crimson Education co-founder Jamie Beaton; and orator Takunda Muzondiwa, whose recent speech at the 2019 Race Unity Speech Awards made global headlines. Day 2, Sunday 25 August, will see around 1700 TEDxChristchurch fans gather for a full day event in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium to watch 20 speakers share thought-provoking and challenging stories and ideas. Amongst the star-studded lineup of speakers is Matt Brown, world-renowned barber of Christchurch’s My Fathers Barbers; out-there social media sensation Constance Hall; American civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson; and scientist and biochemist Dr Sarah Kessans (who’s currently figuring out what we’d eat on Mars!). With our very own Jack Tame as the events’ master of ceremonies, TEDxChristchurch 2019: Tūrangawaewae is undoubtedly shaping up to be the city’s event of the year. I
was at the Hilton recently, reminiscing about an interview I did with the late great Jon Gadsby. He had reflected on the Chateau’s glorious past and we both shared stories of mischief and mayhem. This year Hilton is celebrating 100 years
of history as the world’s first hotel chain. Hilton’s legacy began on 31 May 1919, when New Mexico-born Conrad Hilton travelled to Texas with plans to buy a bank. While that deal fell through, Hilton’s pioneering spirit did not falter – he instead bought the
Nicholas Henare
hotel where he had been staying. Through the times, good and bad, Conrad continued adding new hotels to his collection, becoming the first hotelier to appear on the cover of TIME magazine. Soon, Hilton hotels would circle the globe, introducing and popularising innovations that in many ways created the modern hospitality industry. This includes now customary amenities such as room service, a central reservation system, airport hotels and the much-loved mini bar. We’ve lost so much built heritage in Christchurch, so it’s nice to reflect on the history we do have. I’m sure Chateau on the Park – Christchurch, a DoubleTree by Hilton has a few more good stories in her yet. Happy birthday Hilton!

Make meetings interactive The late Karl Lagerfeld said “I don’t do meetings,” but then of course he didn’t have a bespoke meeting room solution complete with a state-of-theart Interactive Whiteboard created for him by Ricoh New Zealand.
I
n a thriving business, meetings have to happen and Ricoh knows how to maximise productivity through design and technology. Every meeting room is different and every company is different, so Ricoh’s solutions are tailored to ensure that technology, room size, rate of usage, natural and artificial light, acoustics and table size dovetail for best efficiency and enjoyment. Ricoh’s core product is the amazing Interactive Whiteboard. To see it in action is to realise you need it and once installed, you’ll wonder how the business functioned without it. Picture an iPad in table-top size that also functions as a whiteboard you can write on with your finger. Then picture the whiteboard
function overlaying the data, plans or images on your screen, enabling you to alter, design, highlight and rearrange with a fingertip. You can save work straight to your computer, print and email instantly from the screen, video call and conference meeting rooms all over the country – it is easy and instinctive to use. The applications for the Interactive Whiteboards are almost endless. Often wallmounted, the Interactive Whiteboards can also be placed on a stand and used table-top style, which is invaluable for architects, designers, engineers and planners. They are ideal for companies where client presentations are really important, perfect for small and
large group training and for standard meetings. “At Ricoh we now have so much better interaction with our own head office and regional branches using this technology,” Karen Heydon says. The Ricoh team recently installed an Interactive Whiteboard for the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, which has since ordered another for a second space. “As the home and voice of Canterbury business, The Chamber offers around 100 events and 300 training courses every year,” Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Leeann Watson says. “With many of our trainers favouring a workshop approach to encourage engagement,
the multi-functionality aspect of the whiteboards has been really important. This means that we don’t need to clutter up our training spaces with a range of different solutions – we can easily use the board for everything from Skype to presentations as well as just for writing on. Being internetenabled in particular makes a huge difference, as our trainers often use this feature to show instructional videos and can navigate websites easily with a touch of the screen. It’s also really user-friendly so even the least tech-savvy people can use it.” The Chamber has been working with Ricoh for a number of years. “We have been impressed with the way they have taken the time to learn about our organisation and our specific business requirements. They have been able to work with us to provide a fit-for-purpose IT solution that ticks all of the boxes – taking care of everything from photocopiers to IT support and troubleshooting. Their ability to get any issues sorted is integral to us being able to continue to support and empower local business,” Leeann adds. Metropol August 1, 2019 29

Boots ‘n’ all By Melinda Collins
Ankle boots may be winter musthaves, but their versatility makes them a year-round essential.
VOLA BOOT
T
hese little ankle biters provide the complete coverage of a boot, but their chic streamlined shape means they can mix well with just about everything in your closet, from a jeans and tee combo to boxy sweatshirts and coats
- and even that little black dress. High-heeled boots can elevate denim, and combat boots can add edge to a little paisley dress. From flats to heels, there is no shortage of styles and colours this season.
A sartorial safari of animal prints have been stalking the runway recently and the Vola Boots by Mollini (pictured), from Victoria Street’s style staple, Robin Pierre, are the ultimate way to dip your toes into this trend. Better yet, the neutral tone of this animal print pairs perfectly with, well… everything! For traditionalists who want to play it safe with a classic black boot, the Vola Pony Boot
offers the same statement heel with the soft feel of pony hair. They’ll turn the most simple outfit into a statement look. Because, even though Nancy Sinatra famously sang that ‘These Boots Are Made for Walking’, they’re also made for everything else – from dancing to daydreaming. NZFW Local team’s
adventure!
Get ready for 26 August – New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) is hitting the capital! Christchurch’s very own Kristen Stewart Makeup School is taking up 16 graduates and 14 assisting students – their largest team yet – to work their makeup magic. We caught up with Kristen Stewart about the NZFW experience and what she’s looking forward to this year.

How have you and your team been preparing for NZFW? There hasn’t been too much preparation so far except putting the teams together. The production meetings start in a couple of weeks’ time; this is when we meet the designers and get inspiration for what they want. Then between hair and makeup, we collaborate to come up with something that suits the designer/s. This can be quite difficult in group shows where the designers are sharing models and they want a completely different look from each other, and we need to come up with a compromise. What is an average day at NZFW like? Long! For my teams, the first show starts at 10am, so the makeup artists need to be on site by 6:45am ready for the models by 7am, then it is full noise for the next 3-4 hours, until the show is finished and the models have gone. Depending on how many shows we have each day, this can happen back-to-back and even
Natural
overlap until 9:30pm. The workload can change depending on the number of designers and models on each show - it makes it exciting and the adrenaline keeps you going. For me though, I have the best of both worlds. I am there early each day, I may get to lead some shows, however I generally keep an eye on everyone and everything backstage, but I also get the luxury of going to the shows. For me it is a family affair, not only in blood, but a lot of these people I have been working with for over 20 years, so it’s a big catch up session also. What has NZFW been like for you and your team in previous years? It has always been a fabulous experience for me, my team and students. We have grown each year and, with that, we get more shows and artists get more recognition. The students have been very lucky as we’re the only school in New Zealand that gets to take a team. They find it an eye-opening experience to really see what happens behind the scenes – it is a lot of work, but it is very rewarding. What are you looking forward to this year? This year NZFW is back at the location of where it all started – the Auckland Town Hall and Aotea Square. It is going to be very nostalgic walking back in there and I am excited for what it will be like now, as we have all learnt so much since it all began. We love working on the Graduate Shows; this is where new talent is taking the stage for the first time and has an awesome vibe and a lot of ambition!

You’ve been participating in NZFW for quite some time! What has been a big highlight over the years? There have been so many; heading shows and watching my teams thrive is always a highlight. But if I had to pick the most memorable few days, it would be my time with Pamela Anderson. Not only was she an interesting and very beautiful woman, but she taught me how to layer false lashes! I had never put on more than one set at a time before I met her.

Paint the town red: Pantone’s Spring 2019 colour list is packed with empowering and uplifting primary colours, with Fiesta Red and Jester Red topping the list. Whether you adorn yourself in this bold hue from head to toe, or play with fire and try a simple bold lip or heel, it’s time to paint the town red with this hot look.

B.
A fiery fiesta: Bright, fiery and almost orange, Fiesta is a hot fashion statement. But for those who err on the shy side, why not dip your toes in and pair your favourite jeans with a pair of fiery heels, or add some heat to your black blazer with a Fiesta Red handbag? Add some ‘kick’: Red is hot property for those wanting to add that ‘little something’ missing from an otherwise low-key outfit and it’s getting us all fired up about the possibilities in store for our wardrobes. It’s time to roll out the red carpet. All over red rover: If there was ever a time to rock a pair of red pants with a red blazer, red top, and red shoes, it is now. Yes, this is one time when it’s totally OK to opt for a bottom and jacket in the same hot shade, then mix it up with a top that creates contrast, whether it’s lighter, darker or perhaps patterned. Boots ‘n’ all: Not everyone is ready to jump in boots and all when it comes to this powerful shade, so why not start from the bottom and work your way up? Hot red pants or a skirt can still create statement style without feeling over the top. Pair your choice with something simple or pared back. Rocking the red top: Red can turn any garment into a statement piece. Yes, that means it can make simple, paredback styles pop. So pair a red coat with jeans or a red tee with black pants and you’ll be looking hot.

Age Defying Fine lines, dark circles, age spots, dry skin and thinning hair are just a few of the unavoidable aspects of getting older that keep us up at night. There are some clever tricks of the trade that make it possible to bring back that youthful glow.
Vitamin C Beauty bloggers and dermatologists are raving about Vitamin C for anti-aging. It can improve the appearance and texture of your skin by decreasing the sun’s harmful effect on the skin and preventing future damage. It also encourages collagen production to promote skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. What’s more, this miracle antioxidant targets stubborn skin discoloration and reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation, redness and under-eye circles. Serums are one of the best ways to add Vitamin C to your skincare routine.

Microneedling As the name suggests, microneedling involves pricking the skin with tiny needles, creating microscopic channels for anti-aging products, like hyaluronic acid or Vitamin C, to penetrate the deep layers of the skin. The tiny injuries caused by the needles promote collagen production and build new elastin. The anti-aging results of microneedling are most apparent after four to five treatments. The treatment is especially effective at treating large pores, acne scars, neck lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Microblading Just as your hair thins with age, your eyebrows may start to look sparse as you get older. Microblading is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that can give you the appearance of thick, lush brows to lift your face and make you look younger. The technique involves using a hand-controlled device with ultrafine needles to make microscopic strokes which are filled in with semi-permanent pigment that resembles your natural eyebrow hair, creating a defined shape and fuller look. Results last between one and three years, depending on skin type. Vitamin A (Retinol) The wrinkles and freckles we associate with aging appear most prominently on skin that has been exposed to the sun. Vitamin A, which you might also see labelled as retinol, helps fade these dark spots and stimulates the production of new skin cells. And these are just the creams and serums you can get over the counter. Prescription-strength retinoid can actually renew the skin by treating acne, reducing the appearance of fine lines and evening out skin tone. Not only can retinol boost collagen production and treat the signs of aging that are already there but also it can potentially prevent future sun damage.
6. 7. 8.
9.
BOTOX®/Dysport®/Xeomin® Among the millions of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed each year, BOTOX® is one of the most popular. It is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the face by paralysing the underlying muscles, which stops the overlying skin from creasing. The anti-aging effects last between three and six months. It is important to note that BOTOX® will not treat wrinkles caused by sun damage, but, when paired with another treatment like microneedling, BOTOX® can produce fantastic anti-aging results. Radiofrequency Skin Tightening A radiofrequency (RF) treatment involves heating the deepest layers of the skin to encourage new collagen production and cell turnover to help the skin become firmer, thicker and younger-looking. While lasers work to improve the skin’s surface, radiofrequency treatments use a lower frequency to safely penetrate to a deeper level. This helps improve skin tone and structure, and it can even lift tissue. Radiofrequency treatments can be performed in tandem with injectables, microneedling and other minimally invasive treatments to achieve complete facial rejuvenation. Makeup Makeup can transform your appearance and minimise the physical signs of aging. Primer helps minimise fine lines and large pores by filling them in. For fuller lips, lightly draw over the border on your lips with a lip liner that matches your natural lip tone and top with a sheer gloss. Bold and defined eyebrows can also make you look younger. A brow pencil that is a cross between a pencil and a powder will create the illusion of fuller brows. For your eyes, use a cream eye shadow in a neutral shade and apply powder illuminator to the inner corner of your eyes. Cream and silicone-based cosmetics work best for aging complexions because they ‘melt’ into the skin and offer a flawless, naturallooking finish, while powder settles into fine lines and can make the signs of aging more apparent. Laser Resurfacing Laser resurfacing uses short, concentrated beams of light to remove layers of the skin for improved texture. Facial flaws like age spots, acne scars, wrinkles and sun damage respond well to laser resurfacing as it smooths out your skin for a complexion that not only looks younger, but actually is younger. A series of treatments are best for long-lasting results. This article first appeared on Aedition. Visit www.aedit.com

Dermal Fillers These anti-aging injectables fill in wrinkles and depressions, replenishing lost volume to smooth your skin and promote an even complexion. Dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm® use hyaluronic acid, a sugar naturally found in the body, to soften facial wrinkles and restore volume. When injected into the skin, it causes a smoothing, filling effect where lost volume needs to be restored. The effects of hyaluronic acid last between six and 12 months. An experienced injector who understands facial anatomy can give you the natural results you want.

Treating nails with tech “We’re totally amazed at the level of improvement we’re getting for fungal nail infection from our Lunula Laser. We had certainly read about its efficacy from overseas scientific studies, but to see the results with our own eyes is something quite different.”

performing. “The Lunula Laser is the newest standard in treating fungal nail infections. It had been
used extensively worldwide with impressive results and that convinced me to invest in the technology. The great aspect for patients is that it uses two cold laser beams, which means no heat or pain. Once patients have their foot inside, they actually have no sensation that anything is happening at all.” The process of treatment starts with four sessions about a week to 10 days apart. Each foot is exposed to the laser beams for 12 minutes. There may be further sessions depending on the severity of the fungal infection. “The benefits we are achieving with the Lunula Laser include better nail growth and appearance, as well as an improvement in the tone and condition of the skin around the nail.” Howard says that many of his patients just can’t believe how quickly their unsightly nails are repaired, especially if they have tried other treatments in the past without success. “Now in the winter is the perfect time to have this treatment in readiness for summer and open-toed shoes. Come and see us at Barrington, Ilam or Shirley.”

Foundation time! Alphie says the easiest way to pick the right foundation is to select and swatch three shades of the appropriate foundation on your jawline, starting from the corner of the mouth, then blend all three shades into the skin to see which one melts in the best. When applying CC cream or foundation, try starting from the centre and moving outwards. “Why we tend to go centre out is because I don’t like to put too much on your jawline or even on your neck. Most of the problem areas are usually in the centre,” Alphie says. Alphie advises opting for a contouring product that’s two to three shades darker than your complexion. In order to define, start by shading the parts of the face you want to recede; corners and the top of the forehead, underneath the cheekbones, sides of the nose and jawline. Go for the warmth of your skin when choosing a suitable bronzer. “People tan different ways. Always look at your undertones and how you tend to flush and how you tend to bronze, and that’s the colour you should go for.”
6. 7. 8.
Quick and simple eyebrows? Easy! Alphie recommends using a brow pencil to mark the start, the arch and the tail. Use a spoolie to brush your brow hairs upward and against the direction of growth, as this will highlight gaps where product should be applied. Using your brow product, connect the three marks and fill in sparse areas with short, upward strokes. To finish, set with a clear brow gel. For a simple eyeshadow look, Alphie advises starting with the lightest colour (a neutral or skin coloured eyeshadow that will neutralise and balance the eye) and blending it into the crease and towards the brow bone. Follow with a medium coloured eyeshadow, working it into the crease to create depth and enhance the eye’s natural shape. If desired, apply liner following the natural shape of your eye, then curl your lashes and apply two coats of mascara. Luscious lips? Alphie’s go-to is to first apply a lip oil or a lip balm before even starting your makeup, so that by the time you’re done, your lips are hydrated. If you need to, blot any excess off. After applying your lipstick, finish off with a lipliner, rather than starting with one. “It will hide all of your sins,” he laughs.

CUTTING-EDGE SKIN CANCER CHECKS It’s an unfortunate fact that New Zealand has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world.
M
ajor factors which increase our exposure to UV radiation are our thin ozone layer and a lack of atmospheric pollution to block the harmful rays. We know that regular skin cancer checks should be part of our wellness routine. Dr. Mairi-Clare Ferguson brings a unique and world class service to Christchurch, incorporating her clinical
expertise with cutting-edge digital technology and advanced artificial intelligence. A Consultant Dermatologist who has dedicated her career to the management of skin cancer, she has studied advanced dermoscopy interpretation with the University of Queensland and also holds a Fellowship qualification in advanced skin surgery techniques from the
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in the United Kingdom. In addition to personally performing your skin check, Mairi-Clare utilises FotoFinder technology to digitally map and analyse any suspicious lesions. FotoFinder is a German company who are recognised as global leaders in digital imaging and mole mapping. When examining for skin cancer, most doctors use a dermatoscope – a basic handheld instrument that gives a magnified and polarised image of your mole. The polarisation reduces the scatter of light at the surface of the skin, which allows them to see into the skin’s surface layers. Mairi-Clare explains more in-depth about the advantages of using FotoFinder technology. “To enhance the dermatoscopic image further, the FotoFinder camera implements 20 times magnification and polarisation. It displays the detailed image on a screen which enables the patient to see everything for themselves. It educates and empowers the patient to understand what we’re looking at.
“In addition, the software measures and records the exact dimensions, patterns and colours of skin lesions which are then mapped onto the patient’s body shots. Should the patient return at a later date with concerns about a lesion then a ‘ghost’ image is taken and layered on top of the original picture. The computer deciphers if there are any changes, no matter how subtle.” All patients have a digital record of their skin kept at the clinic, and a PDF report with colour images of any suspicious moles will be given to them and their GP. The skin checks and surgery are performed within the warm and welcoming environment of Encoré Skin Cancer Clinic. You will receive a very personalised service where the same dermatologist will perform the skin check and also any additional medical or surgical treatment of suspicious lesions. Surgical options include an ultra-specialised technique for skin cancer removal called Mohs Micrographic Surgery, which is the gold standard for removal for non-melanoma skin cancers. With her own online booking system, patients can book appointments with Mairi-Clare from the comfort of their homes. For online bookings head to www.mohsandskincancer.co.nz or contact Encore Skin Cancer Clinic on 03 356 0214 to book an appointment with Dr Mairi-Clare. Metropol August 1, 2019 47

Understanding Enduring Powers of Attorney It is a common misconception that Enduring Powers of Attorneys (EPAs) are only relevant for ‘old people’. The reality is that a health mishap, medical or accident related, can befall anyone at any age. The fact is that everyone should have these important estate planning tools in place. Having EPAs prepared now means that you get to determine who will represent your interests should you lose mental capacity rather than leaving this to chance in court proceedings.
T
he other important difference is the cost. At worst, EPAs will cost you a few hundred dollars per document, whereas an application for the appointment of a welfare guardian and/or property managers through the court will cost thousands of dollars. The process can also become quite prolonged if all family members are not in agreement. If you get the documents right you should not need to redo them for many years to come, whereas court orders
need to be renewed at regular intervals, so the expense may be incurred over and again. Another common misconception is that if we lose mental capacity, our spouse or partner can manage our affairs. That is not the case. This is where the EPA comes in. It’s important to highlight the difference between an EPA and a general power of attorney (GPA). A GPA is a power commonly given to a person during a temporary absence from the country or a
temporary physical incapacity. In the event of an unexpected loss of mental capacity, the GPA is revoked and of no further use. An EPA on the other hand is a power-of-attorney which survives an unexpected loss of capacity for any reason, be it accident, illness or old age. The EPA takes two forms, one for personal care and welfare and another for property. You should not be fooled into thinking that you can do without either form of EPA because, particularly for seniors going into a rest home
or retirement village facilities, the operators require residents to have both forms in place. EPAs are possible because of the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act 1988. Since the Act was passed into law there have been significant changes on two occasions. The forms are now more than 20 pages long compared to their 1988 predecessors which were two pages long. As a result, the modern forms allow for far more comprehensive documents. Among the options provided for in the modern forms is the ability to appoint a successor or successors, require your attorney to consult with or provide information to certain specified persons and state whether the power of your attorney relates to all of your welfare or property matters or just certain specified matters. According to the team at Kannangara Thomson, having EPAs in place is vital but it is equally important that they are well drafted and you get them right first time in order to avoid further expense. To talk to one of the experienced practitioners at a local law firm about putting EPAs in place, contact Kannangara Thomson on 03 377 4421. Metropol August 1, 2019 49

Environmental Eating By Clementine Page

2. 3. 4. W
ith our food – from what we eat to how it is grown – accounting for more carbon emissions than transport, our culinary innovators globally have been working tirelessly to play their part in rectifying industry-wide issues and seeking a more sustainable path. We’ve already seen numerous operators removing single-use plastics, and this year we can expect to see a ton of new plant-based innovations focusing on sustainability, particularly highlighting nuts, seeds, fruit, veggies and even algae! Here are some of our favourites.
5.
Seed butters: All hail the new nut butter! Perfect for people with nut allergies, seed butters are full to the brim with unsaturated fat, protein and tons of vitamins and minerals – plus they utilise the part of the fruit/vegetable that is commonly discarded. We’re seeing a bunch of creamy ‘butters’ made from every seed imaginable; pumpkin, sesame, poppy, sunflower, hemp – even watermelon! Essential oils: EPA and DHA are the primary omega 3s needed to support heart, brain, eye and maternal health, and this year they’re on the rise in the food and supplement arena, as is CBD (a nonpsychoactive component of the cannabis plant) oil. Particularly gaining traction amongst vegans and vegetarians is algae oil, which is slowly appearing as the new superfood oil due to being a huge source of DHA – one tablespoon of algae oil packs the same amount of omega 3s as one whole avocado! As it is flavourless, it makes for a nutritious substitute for vegetable cooking oils like canola or sunflower. Blended burgers: The newest eco-food ‘blend trend’ is projected to mushroom this year, with chefs and food producers alike beginning to combine veggies and grains – such as lentils, mushrooms and quinoa – with meat for burgers that strike that perfect mark between plant-based and meat, offering nonvegetarians a tasty way to eat more plants. Blended burgers are flavourful, healthy and sustainable - the blended burger has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than a patty made of 100 percent meat. In 2018, more than 350 restaurants in the US served their take on the blended burger – and this movement is expected to grow far and wide across the planet. Gut health: A newfound appreciation for digestive and gut health is emerging, as we become increasingly aware of the powerful role the microbiome plays in both our physical and mental health and wellness. But it’s not probiotic pills that will be in the limelight this year, rather it’s foods and drinks jam-packed with pre- and probiotics that are expected to escalate in popularity – particularly items with ‘shelf-stable probiotics’, like pastas and breakfast foods (Kellogg’s is already introducing a new line of pre- and pro-biotic cereals!). Fermented foods full of these necessary bacteria (kimchi, kombucha, kefir and sauerkraut) are predicted to continue to make their well-deserved appearance on supermarket shelves over the next year.

1.
‘Ugly’ produce: Supermarkets and businesses aiming to reduce food waste are looking for different ways to utilise so-called ‘ugly’ produce – basically fruit and vegetables that aren’t ‘ready for prime time’. UK-based supermarket Tesco and US-based retailer Good Use have launched cold-pressed juices which utilise oddly shaped produce that would otherwise be destined for landfill, and locally, our very own Countdown has followed suit with The Odd Bunch, an initiative that packages ‘funny looking’ fruit and veggies at cheap prices – perfect for smoothies, soups and more!
We caught up with Alex ahead of him judging the Christchurch regional finals of the Rabobank Root to Tip competition on 2 August.
Gathering pace The ‘root to tip’ concept of food is gathering pace as clever culinary creators seek to reduce waste and encourage sustainability. Alex Davies from Gatherings Restaurant is playing no small part in this movement.

Why did you become a chef and what attracted you to the industry? I initially became a chef after my parents immigrated to New Zealand in 2005. I had just turned 20 and, having just moved countries and left university, I couldn’t figure out what to do next. I enrolled as a chef at Ara as a way to meet people and make friends and quickly realised it was something I was good at and fell in love. What’s your foodie philosophy? To work with what you have available around you and create dishes that reflect the seasons and the weather, whilst always honouring the land and what it provides us, even in the scarcest of times. What are some of your most popular dishes? My menu constantly changes to adapt to the time and what is happening in small farms throughout the region - as a result I find my most popular dishes and favourite dishes constantly change. Asparagus in the middle of spring is perfect, as are tomatoes in summer, squash in autumn and onions in winter; the dishes change so much that there can never be a favourite. Why are you so passionate about Garden to Table initiatives? Garden to Table connects children to the food they grow, to the table they eat from, with the rapidly changing world and with climate change a genuine threat to ourselves and more so, the next generation who will suffer at the hands of our actions today, the ability to evolve, adapt and feed oneself is one of the most important skills you can have. As a result, the
Garden to Table scheme is vital in maintaining traditional knowledge and self-sufficiency, once a completely normal thing, lost in two generations. The importance of bringing this back from a health perspective and an ecological one cannot be overstated. You are judging the Christchurch regional finals of the Rabobank Root to Tip competition on 2 August where 9-11 year olds will be creating vegetarian dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. How great is it to see our young people excited about creating cuisine they’ve been involved with from the ground up? It is well and truly 100 percent one of the most inspiring things you can experience. To be in a room with children of this age, and see the passion for growing and cooking, and the engagement they have in what they do is so, so special. This is my third year doing this, and every time I do it I come away feeling inspired and in awe of what they are doing. (I also feel a little jealous that it took me well into my 20s before learning this stuff!) The next generation of young chefs and just general cooking learnt through learning these skills is exciting as anything. The future certainly looks bright! You’ve been presenting dishes at Gatherings inspired by the dishes the children have created. How have these been received? People have really been into it, they love the story behind it. I have really enjoyed interpreting the dishes and understanding the ideas behind them a little more, it has been heaps of fun. I can’t wait to try the original dishes designed by the children themselves, which I’m sure will be way better as they have the true understanding and original concept behind them, they also have such passion that I’m sure we will taste on the day! What do the next 12 months have in store for both you and Gatherings? Having just returned from a trip around Europe doing Gatherings pop-ups overseas and opening our sister bar ALFRED next door, my focus will be on that. I have a few pop-ups in store in and around the country as well, but they are being kept under the hat for now! I also have a one-and-a-half year old daughter who I will be investing all my time in, making her feel loved and ready to take on the world!

Can you tell us a bit about Gatherings and how it came about? Gatherings came about after working as a chef for 12 years and always wanting to do my own thing. After being in a partnership with Shop Eight on New Regent Street, I decided to leave in 2016 and work closer with growers to understand the whole process behind the culinary world. I worked with organic vegetable growers for a year, accumulating ideas and developing a better understanding of the whole process from seed to plate. Having seen this first-hand, I wanted to make a space that highlighted the work of the growers and celebrate the work in which they conduct.
Wigram’s must-visit From classic Kiwi favourites to fresh, modern ideas with a twist, the impressive range of scrumptious options at Le Bakermen Café and Bakery in Wigram makes it well worth a visit.
C
reating familiar dishes with an added flair, owner Will Leung opened the vibrant eatery in March and describes his baking as ‘using French techniques for Japanese-style delicacies, with a Kiwi kick.’ One of the most popular current dishes is the Motherclucker – French toast with crispy fried chicken – followed by the Pulled Pork or Eggs and
Spinach on Waffles. Everything is made fresh onsite daily – apart from the famous Fairlie Pies, sitting alongside the café’s own stunning pie range. Will also bakes a selection of delicious breads, including sourdough, beautiful baguettes and bagels baked in honey. The amazing cheese scones made with buttermilk are a sell-out by 11am every day and the Havana coffee is expertly made by Vii, a former Ara barista tutor. Sarah bakes the ‘sweets with a spin’ such as sponge cake with lemon curd instead of jam, or lollie cake with pineapple lump marshmallow – along with traditional favourites such as banana loaf. Doughnut Friday is also a sell-out, with funky flavours attracting customers from all over the city, such as cerealinfused malt custard doughnuts topped with crunchy caramelised cornflakes or roasted balsamic strawberry doughnuts, topped with dulce de leche. A selection of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options are also available. The café is also dog-friendly and parking is plentiful. Follow Le Bakermen on Instagram and Facebook.

and love hearing their feedback afterwards as well.” With a deck outside to enjoy al fresco dining and a beautiful view of the hills in the summer and a warm cosy atmosphere indoors during winter, The Majestic is a great choice for the entire family. There’s even a children’s menu they’ll love, featuring mini butter chicken or kid-sized chicken korma
and naan bread stuffed with marshmallow or chocolate. “This is really popular with the little ones.” The Onion Bhaji Rings are a true favourite, as well as the Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori Chicken and Lamb Rogan Josh – succulent pieces of lamb with garlic, ginger and aromatic-spiced gravy. For a truly traditional experience, try
the Goat Curry dish that North India is famous for – cooked on the slow fire with secret spices, finished with coriander and red onion garnish. With a $10 lunch menu, takeaway, as well as gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options, you can’t go wrong with The Majestic. Deliveries within 6km are free for orders over $40. Chocolate Brioche Buns Preparation and cook time: 80 minutes Serves: 12 medium sized buns
62 August 1, 2019 Metropol
6. 7.
Ingredients For the dough: 400ml milk 110g butter 3 tsp active dried yeast 110g caster sugar 750g plain flour 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp ground cardamom 1 large free-range egg, beaten
4. 5.
For the filling: 50g softened butter 50g caster sugar 200g dark Lindt chocolate, finely grated Additional melted chocolate or chocolate sauce for serving
8.
Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Melt the butter in a large pot gently over a low heat and then add the milk. When the mixture is lukewarm, remove from the heat and add the yeast, whisking to incorporate. Mix the flour, sugar, salt and cardamom in a large mixing bowl. Make a well and pour the wet ingredients in. Using a wooden spoon, mix until you have a rough dough. When the dough has taken shape and is no longer sticky, turn out onto a clean floured surface and knead for about six minutes until smooth and elastic. Dust with a little flour if you find the dough is too sticky. Transfer the dough to a floured bowl, covered with plastic wrap and a towel and let it rise for 45 minutes in a warm dark place. To prepare the filling: In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until you have a smooth paste.
When the dough has risen, punch it down in the bowl, then roll it out on a floured benchtop into a large rectangle about 3mm thick. Spread the filling over this, leaving a 1cm space along the far end. Sprinkle with the chopped chocolate. Roll up from the long end until you have a long tube of batter. Cut the tube into 5cm-thick portions. Place lengthways onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and press down slightly, making the shape of a Danish. Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise again until the buns have doubled in size. Brush with the beaten egg and then bake the buns in the oven for about 15 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Serve with melted chocolate or drizzled with chocolate sauce. The buns are divine when consumed while still warm from the oven, with a scoop of icecream for pudding.

All tealed up By Melinda Collins
We’ve long held a deep affection for teal, but this year the hue is all grown up and it’s got us all tealed up.

increasingly digital world. So how can we use teal to create the perfect palette? Why not indulge in teal’s bold, rich incarnation, taking inspiration from gemstones and their glamorous appeal? Teal pops with bright white and its colour wheel match is coral if you’re yearning for summer holidays. Despite its obvious association with the tropics, it makes for a calming pairing with greys, a deep and
edgy match with black and makes for a regal partnership with gold. Equally it works with cream, navy, pinks and especially gold and brown tones. Embellishment is on the way back, as a rebellion to overly earnest, minimalist interiors. So why not pair your teals with burnished metals for an edgy luxe glamour, or less-thanperfect antiques for a shabby chic vibe? It’s got our teal of approval.

Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd
European design inspiration A small island in the bottom of the South Pacific, New Zealand has long taken design inspiration from offshore, in particular, from Europe and its diverse range of countries.
etropol caught up with award-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong of Armstrong Interiors about what we can expect to see heading our way, based on European summer trends. “As I sit on a train travelling from Venice through to Florence, I have been asked to write about forecast trends in Europe,” Angelique says. “Since leaving our Christchurch winter, I have experienced Paris, the UK, MonteCarlo, Milan, Venice and the region of Tuscany, Europe’s summer holiday destination. Throughout these wonderfully inspiring places, you start to recognise that each region has its own particular trend. “Italy is of course using the latest in luxurious fabrics from our favourite fabric houses, while staying true to tradition by sticking to the colour traditional colour schemes of the region,” she says. “Paris, on the other hand, takes a more contemporary approach to fabric colours and textures, while the closer to the sea you get, the more soft blues and greens, patterned cottons and thick heavy linens you will find in trends. Meanwhile, stone tops and nested coffee tables are still very hot across Europe.” Comparatively, in New Zealand we’ve still got a lot of love for timber and moody dark colours, with black tapware and dark accessories that have been on trend for a couple of years now. “But if we look at what’s coming through now, we’re seeing more greens, blues, natural fibres and various tones of natural, ranging from soft grey to beige and caramel to complement a lighter and softer approach to interior design,” Angelique says. One of her favourite pieces during the trip that she wouldn’t mind investing in herself, was a sofa. “The design function behind this piece is that it is not easy talking to people on a long 3-4 seater – well this sofa is the perfect solution!”

Sandra Dacombe began at Art Metro in 2007. Initially working in pastels and acrylics, she then discovered oils. She paints mainly in the photo realism genre. “For me, participation in Art Metro classes is as much for social interaction as learning to paint. I’ve met lots of really nice people as well as making some very good friends.” Sandra says she now has the confidence to paint at home having learned the basics in class. “I enjoy painting for myself, but would like to enter some local art sales next year.” Jayne Warwick commenced Art Metro classes ten years ago; painting with oils, she has explored traditional through to impressionism and is keen to move towards surrealism. Jayne says the tutors take each student on their own learning journey in a non-pressured environment, which is critical to personal creativity. “Art Metro provides an environment conducive to individual expression and, most importantly, the ability of each student to be in control of their own learning.” Visit www.artmetro.co.nz.

t has been a privilege for us to open our practice this year and welcome those with a passion for design and the architectural process to join our ArchiChat Group gettogethers. Sharing a room with people from all walks of life who are genuinely interested in what we do as architects and how we go about it is really thrilling in many ways. We first realised there was a place for an interactive social forum on architecture after being approached by a lovely couple, familiar with our work, at an open studio session last year. They were curious about design and asked lots of questions about our projects. It struck us that there could be other people like them who would appreciate being able to meet us informally and talk about architecture. We were not sure what to expect when we launched our first ArchiChat Group session earlier this year. In fact, demand was such that we ended up holding a second evening to cater to everyone who wanted to get involved. Our next ArchiChat series of meetings will be in the week
starting 5 August with the third scheduled for November. While builders, engineers and landscape architects are among those taking part, anyone with an interest in architecture is welcome to register. You don’t need to be an industry expert or someone thinking about building a new home. ArchiChat is primarily a forum to meet and socialise with our architects and other people who share a passion for all things architectural. Our get-togethers, with drinks and nibbles provided, are small, friendly and generally quite noisy with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and chat about matters of interest. At each session we go through some of our projects, including past and current work. Again, we see this is as very informal, not a lecture. We also encourage discussion regarding newsworthy topics in the world of architecture. For example, a focus of debate at our first ArchiChat sessions was ‘the Tulip’, the controversial new skyscraper planned for London. As we
are involved in a local project, we also chatted about the co-housing movement and opened up the floor to explore what people think about this trend. This month we are inviting people to share their thoughts on whether it is time to rethink the norm of the small bach. For those who socialise most with family and friends while on holiday, then a larger bach and a smaller city house or apartment could make more sense than a large city home and a tiny bach. We are looking
forward to hearing people’s feedback on what would work best for them. We love how the ArchiChat Group is creating a place for dialogue and a two-way flow of ideas. As much as people can learn from us, we are also gaining a lot from the informal exchange of thoughts and ideas with people who care about architecture as much as we do. Register your interest at info@allso.co.nz and we will keep you posted. www.allso.co.nz

Heating Efficiency
It’s getting cold out there, so we’ve put together our hottest tips for heating your home efficiently.
NEW Advanced Water Heating Technology
The latest high efficiency, green technology providing superior high temperature domestic hot water and hydronic heating with the lowest running costs. Designed in Norway for their Arctic conditions and made in Europe to their rigorous standards.
H
eat pumps are one of the most cost-efficient ways to get the job done, but they do need to be sized, installed and used properly. Getting your heatpump serviced regularly will ensure it’s running efficiently. The World Health Organisation recommends heating to a minimum of 18 degrees to prevent occupiers from getting sick. It might be tempting to ramp up heating some days, but setting the temp to 21 degrees is a good balance between keeping warm and not wasting energy.
A house with good ceiling and underfloor insulation can reduce heat loss by up to 50 percent, so get a professional to check out your insulation. Speaking of insulating, now is a good time to either install or upgrade your curtains to ensure they’re good quality and lined – good curtains can be as effective as double glazing when it comes to keeping your home warm. Make sure you open them during the day and close them half an hour before the sun disappears so you can trap all that free heat. Check the outside of your windows as well, ensuring seals are in good condition and trim back foliage from your windows so you can let the light in. It may seem counterproductive, but opening windows briefly every day actually makes the house warmer by drying it out. Most households spend more money on heating water than space heating. So why not check out some of the energy efficient water heating and cooling solutions now available.
STAY WARM & ELIMINATE CONDENSATION
DID YOU KNOW A FAMILY OF FOUR CAN PRODUCE 34 LITRES OF MOISTURE A DAY THROUGH EVERYDAY TASKS? Air with a higher level of moisture takes more energy to heat, which will increase the household energy bills or reduce your thermal comfort. SNOWTEMP can provide the right solutions to ensure your home is energy efficient to heat with reduced odours and increased fresh, dry air.

BEFORE AFTER
MAKING THE OLD NEW Why replace when you can reuse, recycle or restore? That approach is as true with kitchens and furniture as it is with other more obvious elements of our throwaway and acquisitive society. It is also the mantra and the fundamental philosophy of M.F. Turnbull, the specialists in making the old new again.
“More and more we are seeing a trend towards refinishing and refurbishing kitchens rather than totally renovating them,” Monique Turnbull says. “A facelift for a fresh new look may be all a kitchen requires if it has been well designed in the first place and is functional. This could cut the cost of renovation by up to 50 percent.” So rather than replacing perfectly good cabinetry to get a new kitchen, M.F. Turnbull
can refinish – i.e. recolour – your kitchen. No matter what the current finish is – timber, lacquer or a pre-finished board such as melamine – they can repaint it to the colour of your choice to bring your kitchen right up to date. “You can have any standard colour you like off any colour chart. If you have something different in mind, or a specific colour or tone you may want, we can work with you and make it happen. You
can also choose the gloss level for the paint from a textured matte to a mirror-like highgloss.” M.F. Turnbull can also do minor alterations to cabinetry, or provide new cabinets where required such as overhead fridge cabinets, microwave areas and oven surrounds. If you require new door fronts, soft close hinges and drawer runners, they can organise that as well. As for process, after a free no-obligation consultation and quote the company’s specialist kitchen installers will remove all the items to be repainted. Once this work is completed at the made-for-purpose Christchurch factory, the installers will put your new kitchen back together - from removal to reinstallation takes about three weeks.
M.F. Turnbull certainly doesn’t limit refinishing and refurbishing to kitchens. The team also specialises in furniture restoration and renovation. Pieces that have gone out of fashion can be revamped and updated. Much loved older pieces can be revitalised by being stripped, repaired and refurbished back to their original condition. M.F. Turnbull can update and revitalise virtually everything – from sideboards, chairs and lamp bases, to bedroom suites, dining tables, coffee tables, wall units, vanities and wardrobe doors. Monique suggests you send in photos of your kitchen or furniture with a description of what you would like and the team can provide a quote. You can do that either by emailing info@mfturnbull.co.nz or uploading directly to the website. Please include your contact number in case there are any questions. You can also contact M.F. Turnbull on 03 365 2519 or visit www.mfturnbull.co.nz and www.kitchenrenewal.co.nz.

Standing out By Melinda Collins
Bringing the outside in has long been a popular theme in interior decorating. Touted for their health benefits and styling credentials, indoor plants are growing in popularity – pun entirely intended. quick and clever way to make your interior spaces look pulled together, there’s a plant stand to suit every décor style. They enable you to stagger the heights of your potted perennials, adding drama and dimension to your spaces, and they’re a great way to soften stark corners. A minimalist black wrought iron stand is a great option for a contemporary space, while timber looks the part in more traditional homes. Geometric shapes and mid-century design are hotting up our homes, so look for clean lines, tapered legs and scandi-style sustainability. After all, it’s time to bring life into your home – both in the literal and figurative sense.

We’re crushing on timber blinds right now, as the perfect accompaniment to the greenery that we’re increasingly yearning for in our internal spaces.
W
hile the true story of venetian blinds and their invention is debatable, Egyptians were among the first to create blinds from reeds and it seems every early culture has utilised this clever curtain alternative throughout history. While we’re certainly not short of window furnishings in the modern day, timber works particularly well with the shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly designs across home décor.
But in 2019, sustainable furniture is no longer sticking to its stereotypical re-used aesthetic. The bohemian trend is gone, replaced by clean, elegant pieces, and the smooth polished look of a set of timber venetians makes for the perfect partnership with this style. So chat to your interior decorator now, you might just have a blind date in store.

PACKING SOME PUNCH By Nicholas Henare
I asked Hemi Peek at Avon City Ford what he thought were the three top features of the Ford Endura Titanium; “A solid drive with a luxurious cabin, hands-free automatic power tailgate opening and easy interactive display”.
NOW $89,995
ell he wasn’t wrong. The 2-litre turbo diesel is also packing some punch in acceleration; with 140kW and 400Nm torque, it’s good off the mark. There’s plenty of room in the back and, coming in at $69,900 plus ORC, it’s competitive for like-minded models on the market. I drove the hell out of it and hardly touched the full tank in a week. I did struggle with the dial gear change at first but soon got used to it. Its simple but elegant interior was a pleasure to sit in, as were its luxurious seats. I guess the catch phrase of ‘Affordable Luxury Awaits’ really says it all. It “feels” good; two-tonne towing capacity and a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty are added bonuses. It might be my aggressive Christchurch driving, but the precollision assist and pedestrian detection work really well! The driver’s and passenger’s seats come with a rear seat entertainment screen for watching movies on the long drive for the kids and, as a family SUV, it fits the bill well. The week I had it was glorious and sunny, so I got to enjoy the sunroof for all that it is. The Ford Endura Titanium is everything it says it is; loaded with features you just don’t get on every SUV model, even the more expensive adversaries.

A STANDOUT SHOWROOM Chances are, if you have lived in Christchurch for the last 30 plus years, you have known someone who has purchased a Honda from Honda Cars Christchurch. The team has gained a sterling reputation over the last three decades and, to this day, is New Zealand’s biggest volume Honda dealer.

fter battling through earthquakes and shifting across the road for a time, Honda’s iconic showroom on the corner of Montreal and St Asaph Street has been given a complete overhaul, to bring you one of the nicest new car showrooms in Canterbury. The layout would still be
very familiar to loyal Honda customers. However, the similarities end there. The first thing you notice is the sheer amount of light which illuminates the whole showroom, thanks to the dealership facing north and the size of the glass windows. A new customer waiting
area and café can be found and the friendly Honda team is always on hand to help out. Around the showroom, each model, from Jazz to Civic Type R, stands out beautifully, as does a very special original 1976 Honda Civic hatch owned by Honda New Zealand.
The 12 month build process has resulted in one of the most warm and welcoming car dealerships in the country. Plus, with Honda’s friendly professional team, years of experience and some of the nicest all-round cars on sale, you would be hard pressed to find better.

The SUV is king of the new car market, so is the five-door family hatch a thing of the past? Not so, according to Mazda. After attending the launch of the seventh generation Mazda3 in Hanmer Springs and sampling two variants of the new hatch in day-to-day driving, the new Mazda3 is the best yet.

he new Mazda3’s handsome chops draw design cues from the RX Vision and Vision Coupe Concept cars to create a stunning-looking design. Those wrap around headlights and low nose give a sportier look while at the back, minimal styling cues make for a svelte rear. The new range consists of three model variants. The entry point GSX for $36,595 comes with Mazda’s silky smooth 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G fourcylinder engine mate to a six-speed auto ox. This means 114kW at 6,000 rpm and 200Nm of torque. It also sips away at 6.2L per 100km. Moving up to the mid-range $40,795 GTX and the range-topping Limited at $48,795. These will both come with the 2.5-litre Skyactiv four pot. Mated to the same six-speed auto box, power goes up to 139kW at 6,000 rpm and 252Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm and is equipped with both i-stop and cylinder deactivation. Fuel figures come in at 6.6L per 100 km which is pretty darn good. Inside you are greeted by delightful surroundings. Everything about the new 3 is simplistic and it’s easy to see it as a driver-focused cabin with minimal distractions. The Mazda3 is also very well-equipped. Standard kit includes a crystal-clear Head Up Display, LED Headlights and a 7-inch
infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto Connectivity. Plus, every button or toggle switch is such a joy to use. Mazda’s i-Activsense system with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Radar Cruise Control, Smart Braking Support and Driver Attention Alert also makes up the standard package. Move up to the GTX and you get Dual Zone Climate Control and heated seats. Plus, if you go whole hog with the Limited, you can have a sunroof, leather trim and a thumping BOSE stereo system. On the move in the GSX, that 2.0-litre SKYACTIV engine pulls well, but for me, the one to get is the midrange GTX. Its 2.5-litre SKYACTIV engine is a real peach and the way it shifts, whether in normal or sport mode, is refined and responsive. You do have to stand on the anchors, but ride comfort is unparalleled for this class. Another area where the Mazda3 excels is in the bends. You can corner at a great rate, everything hunkers down and bendy bitumen is devoured with ease. In summary, with the new Mazda3, despite the slight decline in the hatch segment, Mazda has given us even more of a reason to buck the trend. It’s just so damn good.

After years of speculation, Toyota has given us a new Supra and it’s in New Zealand! I recently headed to a rain-soaked Hampton Downs Raceway to enjoy two glorious, if a bit brief, laps in the 2019 Toyota GR Supra.
S
o, what can we tell you? Well the new Supra is the result of a joint project between Toyota and BMW. Made in Austria, it essentially shares the same 3.0-litre straight six-engine and slick eight-speed ZF automatic transmission from the new BMW Z4. This means a very nice 250kW and 500Nm of torque. However, according to Supra Chief Engineer, Tetsuya Tada-San, who surprised us with his presence when the car was unveiled, the GR Supra breathes Toyota’s DNA. “The GR Supra
has been fine-tuned to give it a personality that is Toyota. This car is all about performance.” Tada-San also gave us a bit of background about how the GR Supra Project started. “My boss, Toyota President Akio Toyoda, came to me and said we need a new Supra. He was constantly involved with the design and build process. He loves the Supra history and had to make sure I was doing a good job.” Before setting out on our brief stint, Tada-San was asked, “Should I leave the traction
control on?” His response was, “Nah, leave it off, we want you to have fun”. Out into the monsoon-soaked track we went. The sound of that sweet straight six is a torrent of symphonic bliss, and all that 500Nm of torque kicks in at a mere 1650rpm, meaning you can get on the power sooner and reach the national limit in 4.3 seconds. In the bends, the steering weights up beautifully and the Electronic Differential which splits the torque evenly between
both rear wheels means, despite the wet conditions, you can enjoy all that power under control, plus, having grippy Michelin tyres adorning those handsome 19-inch forged alloy wheels helps. The Toyota GR Supra can be yours for $99,990 NZD. However, Toyota NZ only plans to bring in 40 in the first year, with many already snapped up. It would be worth the wait though, because after our first taster, we have become rather smitten with this future performance classic.
