Your Kindness. Their Christmas. Embrace the Christmas spirit. When we think of Christmas, we think of tables laden with food; of turkey and ham with baby spuds; of brandy snaps, pavs, and tasty treats galore. But for many Kiwi families, the reality is quite different. In fact, often times it’s just another day struggling to make ends meet. By donating money, food, or your time to the City Mission this Christmas you’ll be helping us make the festive season a little bit special for real families, in real need.

W

hile you’re looking after friends and family this festive season, it’s important you don’t forget to look after ‘you’. Wellbeing Specialist Sarah McGuinness shares her top tips for keeping well over Christmas. 1. Be right here, right now: Practicing mindfulness is probably the last thing you’d think to add to your festive to-do list, but it can be a helpful calming tool. 2. Know that good enough is great: There can be a lot of pressure at this time of year, especially when hosting or staying with family and/or friends. Be clear about what you can control and what you can’t, and what’s important and what’s not. 3. Be with people who love you in all your glory: There’s almost nothing better than spending time with people who love you for who you are and can make you laugh until your sides hurt. Find time to be with those people and find ways to help each other take care. 4. Celebrate the goodness: When you get a chance, write down a list of all the good moments from 2019. It might be a list of big things, small things or both. The idea is ABC AUDITED to come up with 10 to 20 things that make you smile and feel buoyant. 5. Support the community: There are many families that go without in some way at this time of year. Consider donating your time or items to organisations that support families or individuals in need.

Shelley Ferguson wears a lot of hats; she’s the editorial director of home and fashion magazines at Bauer Media, including Your Home and Garden; she’s the beloved co-host of The Block New Zealand; she’s also wife of Steve and mum to Flynn and Jett.

O

n Tuesday 12 November, she added another one, joining the judging panel of the Best Dressed competition at Addington’s Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup Day alongside Jackie O’Fee from Signature Style, creative director Deanna Didovich of New Zealand-based brand RUBY. We caught up with Shelley about her impressions of the day. Christchurch was incredibly lucky to have hosted you recently when you came down to judge our Best Dressed competition. Did you get to spend much time down here and look around? I was lucky to be invited! It was a quick 24-hour visit, but within that time I had a quick look around the city, got to spend the night in a hotel, had lunch

with the organisers, judged the Best Dressed competition and drank some champagne before flying out, so I reckon I made the most of it! What did you think of the fashions this year? I was incredibly impressed; it was at an international level. The planning, themes, details, fit, fabric, accessories, hair and makeup many of the contestants showcased was impeccable. Racewear is about getting every detail perfect and respecting heritage with a modern twist which takes time, money and an inherent sense of style. There were so many different, unique and creative approaches which made for a visual feast!

out & about What were some of the highlights of the day for you? The entire vibe on the day was fabulous. This is an iconic event and I could feel the sense of pride and celebration on the day. It was a fantastic business card for the city that’s for sure. What were some of the key things you were looking for when it came to selecting your top picks for the podium? The first was a cohesive theme that was evident in every aspect of the look without going OTT which is difficult with racewear. The other key element I looked for was fit and fabric. At this level every nip, tuck and pleat needs to be tailored to the body. You are always exceptionally put together yourself. What do you love about fashion? Oh thank you! I love to dress up; sometimes I don’t think we do it enough. I grew up watching classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and love iconic brands like Chanel. There is a sense of celebrating womanhood by making an effort and dressing for the occasion, in whatever way that means to you personally. Where was your beautiful Cup Day outfit from? A Melbourne brand called Loreta. How would you describe your own fashion philosophy? Wear things that make you happy – feeling great leads to having more fun. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? Continuing to nurture my interior design business and clients, another season of The Block, and hopefully another trip to Christchurch for Cup Day 2020!

MERIVALE

It’s a fantastical lead up to Christmas as the curtain rises on The Court Theatre’s spectacular summer season of The Wind in the Willows, which was last performed there in 1995.

D

irector Ross Gumbley says audiences can expect thrilling theatrical magic, whether they’ve seen the show before or not. “Our approach is not to try and recreate something from the past, but how we can best tell this story now and really keep the core of The Wind in the Willows,” explains Gumbley of the exciting new concept. “Our idea is that the animals in the story have found this old abandoned theatre and they’re putting on the play!” Costume Designer Stephen Robertson describes it as a period piece with a twist. “From a costume point of view, it’s really big. There’s probably going to be 150 costumes – and each costume has about six to nine pieces!”

Audiences will love the onstage antics of 22 stars, costumed as rabbits, squirrels and other woodland creatures getting up to all kinds of theatrical mayhem. The main cast includes Cameron Rhodes as Toad; Eilish Moran as Mole; Gregory Cooper as Ratty; Tom Trevella as Badger and Andrew Todd as Albert. “It’s wonderful for families, but it’s not purely a kid’s show,” Robertson says, “The Wind in the Willows is one of those timeless pieces like Mary Poppins – it’ll always be with us.” The Wind in the Willows is playing at The Court Theatre from 23 November. For bookings phone 0800 333 100 or visit www.courttheatre.org.nz.

YOUR TIME TO By Melinda Collins

Adventure (noun): an unusual and exciting or daring experience An exhilarating mix of adrenalin, speed and nature, ziplining is sweeping the world as a fun, safe alternative for thrill-seekers wanting to experience the sensation of flying. Editor Melinda Collins heads up the hill to check out the ziplining facilities at Christchurch Adventure Park and tells us why this should be your next epic adventure.

A

ction-packed, adrenalin-inducing adventure is there for the taking in the heart of the striking pine forest of the Port Hills that frames the city’s southern stretch. But Christchurch Adventure Park stands head and shoulders above the rest and not just because of the spectacular terrain that looks right out across the city. Christchurch Adventure Park is the first lift-accessed, four-season mountain biking operation in the world featuring a chairlift specifically designed for mountain bikes and their riders. The

12 12 December, 2019 Metropol

long-awaited park opened just before Christmas 2016, boasting bike trails for all levels of riders, a mountainside café, ziplines and more than 120km of bike routes. Although the network of advanced, intermediate and beginner trails on 358 hectares of land between Dyers Pass, Summit and Worsleys Roads was the jewel in its crown, the Christchurch Adventure Park is out to prove it is not just for mountain bikers. A new zipline product, The Long Ride – which is the last and longest zipline

in the tour – has been launched just in time for the summer holidays. It offers a quicker option for zipliners, taking about an hour to complete compared to 2-2.5 hours the full tour takes. The full tour offers not just one but four great zips – each one of them something a little bit different. The first one offers sweeping panoramas which seem to stretch forever, while the second prepares you for the third, which is the highest in New Zealand – 150 metres! Meanwhile the fourth takes you above and through the trees for just

reasons ziplining should top your bucket list: Challenge yourself Ziplining is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and see just what you’re capable of. It is one of the safest outdoor activities available, but you still get the rush of cruising down the highest (150 metres!) and the longest (more than one kilometre!) zipline in New Zealand. Adrenalin junkies Team building exercises encourage meaningful connections among your employees while building a social network within your company. There’s nothing like a shared adrenalin experience to bring people together. Flights of fancy Humans have been crazy about flight since the beginning of time. And seeing as we haven’t figured out a way to grow wings yet, a trip through the Christchurch Adventure Park on a zipline is the next best thing! Accessible action You may not have headed up the hill yet because you’re not keen on the sweat, blisters and achy muscles that come with a mountainside bike ride but, accessible to everyone, ziplining is a great way to get the best of both worlds from an afternoon in the outdoors.

over a kilometre! The new zip isn’t all that’s new up the hill. Four new intermediate bike tracks have recently been incorporated amongst the trees below Dyers Pass Road, aimed at helping intermediate riders progress their skills, bolstering the already spectacular track network. There’s even a walking trail that can be accessed from the village car park. From the top, you can take a free chairlift back down to the village. Check the website for access requirements christchurchadventurepark.com. Absorb the stunning views from the chairlift or walking track; take in the stunning machine and hand-built mountain bike trails or just chill out on the large deck of the Adventure Park Café nestled in the pine forest. There’s something for everyone here – not just the thrill-seekers!

Who to take? Ziplining is the ultimate escape right here in the city and Christchurch Adventure Park can accommodate groups, so grab a group of friends ‘just because’ or get in touch if you have an event coming up: - Work colleagues - Sports teams - Wedding parties - Reunions - Icebreaker with in-laws! A family pass is the ultimate stocking filler and gift vouchers are available!

iercely committed to Christchurch, the German-Kiwi trio have collaborated with local hospitality personality Campbell Parker and expert brewer Dicky Fife to bring the quintessential beer culture of Bavaria to Christchurch’s thriving hospitality scene. The venture pays homage to the original Kaiser Brewery of Bavaria, founded by the brothers’ great uncle in the 1830s. More than 170 years later, the Kaiser beer business has been given a new lease on life. An original handwritten family beer recipe given to the brothers on a trip to Bavaria is how the story begins. “The recipe has been tucked away but it arrived with us at the right time. The Canterbury earthquakes taught us that we had too many eggs in one basket in terms of our vineyards. We had brewing legend Dicky Fife on our Giesen team and, once he found out we had rediscovered our family brewing recipe… well, it was a no-brainer, Kaiser Brothers Brewery was born,” Alex says. If anyone knows about beer, it’s Dicky Fife – after all, he’s the man behind Dux de Lux’s famous Ginger Tom brew! A renowned Master Brewer and Senior Beer Judge who’s taken out numerous trophies and medals for brewing himself, Dicky has taken the family’s original recipes and handcrafted a range of Bavarian-inspired craft beers that are brewed locally – the

Kiwi way. Well-known hospitality operator Campbell Parker, who has set up and run many successful hospitality ventures, says although he was living in Spain at the time, he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to partner with the Giesen brothers to establish Kaiser Brew Garden, so he packed up and moved home. Campbell says Kaiser Brew Garden will be a perfect addition to the already popular Riverside Market. “It’ll be a relaxing garden terrace above the hubbub of the marketplace, where people can pop in for a yarn. Our values sit nicely alongside Riverside’s. We’re keeping it fresh, fun and local,” Campbell says. With a working micro-brewery on-site, this roof terrace garden bar will be the only of its kind in the heart of the city. Here you’ll meet old friends and make new ones as you sip on one of their delicious craft beers, ciders or fruity cocktails, and peruse a Bavarian-inspired menu that features German favourites like sauerkraut, flammkuchen and apple strudel. If you’re heading to the Great Kiwi Beer Festival this summer, you can taste four of Kaiser Brother’s Brewery’s delicious beers (including one that’s exclusive to the festival only!) and one refreshing apple cider – plus a shandy and lemonade will also be available. www.kaiserbrewgarden.co.nz

JUST SCOOTING AROUND

As the new face of our city emerges with the revitalising rebuild well underway, we’re discovering new ways of getting about that are practical, sustainable, cost-effective and fun!

E

lectric Scooters Canterbury are proud to be at the forefront of meeting the needs of Christchurch commuters by providing quality selected scooters backed by an excellent sales and service support. Their expanding range covers fold-up, ride-on commuter scooters; off-road cruisers; golf scooters, plus a range of high-quality fat tyre, kick fold-up scooters with front and rear suspension and disc brakes. The latter models are even puncture-proof. Currently there are four options available of fold-up scooters that weigh as little as 10kg. These scooters can be easily stored and removed from the trunk of motor vehicles for a stress-free commute around the inner city or through congested shopping/ business suburbs. They may be ridden on the footpath, cycle lanes or the road, and no licence, registration or WOF is required. The lightweight, fold-up features also make them ideal to carry on public transport or store neatly in a work space. The scooters have a minimum operating range of 20kms, and up to 30kms plus on some models with a fully charged battery. For more information on their products, the team at Electric Scooters Canterbury are only too happy to arrange a demonstration and assist customers in finding the right scooter that meets all their commuting requirements. Legal Expertise Great lawyers must bring more to the table than traditional expertise and experience. Today they must have an affinity with people in all their diversity, earn trust, have great communication and reporting skills, be in tune with the quickly changing social context, and do the whole job in a cost-effective way.

C

ommercial Lawyer Emma Jackson, new Senior Associate at Papprills Lawyers, puts clients at the centre of her practice. “I love the satisfaction that comes from helping people: identifying their needs and assessing the best path forward for them, assisting them to achieve their goals and avoiding problems along the way. I take a collaborative approach every time – I like meeting people and finding out about them and their businesses and guiding them through what can be daunting legal processes.” Emma has 20 years’ experience in the commercial and property areas and specialises in subdivisions, sales and purchases, leases and financing. Acquisitions, sales and restructuring of businesses together with succession planning are also key competencies. She gets great satisfaction from advising clients on all technical aspects throughout all stages of the transaction. Career highlights include advising on flagship commercial and residential subdivisions as well as acting for two large irrigation companies on all parts of their expansion projects: product disclosure statements, issue of shares, financing and property access. “I take pride in reducing clients’ scope for worry and ensuring we move forward together.” A Cantabrian who studied at the University of Otago, Emma comes to Papprills after eight years at a South Island based firm. As a fan of English and grammar, she

can’t recall a time when she didn’t want to be a lawyer. “It all seemed so glamourous and fast-paced! The reality is a little less so but I do love working with words, and through commercial work I’ve surprised myself by becoming a really passionate numbers geek too,” Emma says. The team at Papprills also includes partners Jeff McCall and Margaret Smyth, solicitors David Collins, Rebecca Maynard and Emma Ioane and Legal Executive Carmen Campos. The firm’s vision is to develop the commercial practice, in what is already a firm of extremely varied skill. There is a rare medical focus as the firm is contracted to the Cook Islands in the health area. “We are an all-service firm celebrating 125 years of doing wills and estates and family and employment law: looking after South Islanders personally and their business needs from cradle to grave,” Jeff says. “People that come to Papprills are looking for technical expertise but on a personal level,” Margaret says. “We came back early to the CBD, because we are a firm with heart, and wanted to be part of the revitalisation of the city’s heart.” At their Gloucester Street office there is client parking available and with people at the centre of the practice, their phones are always on, call 03 379 2800. Worked around a ‘country comes to town theme’ you’ll find beautiful French and English inspired giftware, while in the café you’ll find delicious wholesome and homemade cakes and slices, plus full breakfast, lunch and sides menus, which cater for gluten free and vegetarian diners. Co-owners and sisters Miranda Sinton and Sophie Duff are locals who grew up on a farm in Mayfield. Arapawa’s Precious Pearls Family owned and operated Arapawa Blue Pearls showcases the majestic side of paua in New Zealand.

L

ocal to the Marlborough Sounds, these pearls and jewellery are cultured in this special part of the South Island. These pearls are created by placing a seed in a paua shell and allowing them to grow for another four years. After the pearls have formed, the fish are harvested for meat while the shell is cut down to produce pearls. The remaining paua shell is used to aid in reseeding juvenile paua into the ocean or sold to craft local artwork. The little island of Arapawa also offers three homesteads with its own personal beach and beautiful hills to adventure. You can head there to stay or book a tour through Beachcomber Cruises to see the process. For more information, visit www.arapawabluepearls.co.nz.

BEFORE

RESTORING TO

PRE-QUAKE CONDITION Give yourself the gift of peace of mind this Christmas by choosing Wrightway Construction to repair your earthquake damaged home.

W

orking closely with EQC for more than eight years, Wrightway has built up specialist knowledge of earthquake repair methodologies and has access to all the expert services, contractors and subcontractors required to ensure that your earthquake-damaged home is restored to its pre-earthquake condition. Wrightway is one of a small group of building companies 26 12 December, 2019 Metropol

still working closely with EQC to ensure that earthquakedamaged homes are correctly repaired, managing remedial repairs through the EQCmanaged process. “While we continue to work directly with EQC to manage repairs, our business has evolved as the property and insurance markets in Canterbury have changed,” Wrightway Director Hamish Wright says.

AFTER

“Although we continue to hold the full confidence of EQC and have jobs allocated through their programme, we have found that more and more homeowners are approaching us directly when they have cash-settled their claims and are looking for a company that truly understands the earthquake repair process, and can support them through that.” In August 2019, the Government announced a $300m policy for homeowners of over-cap ‘on-sold’ properties in Canterbury to apply for an ex gratia Government payment to have their homes repaired. If you think you may be eligible for an ex gratia payment from the Government, you can find more information on www.eqc. govt.nz, including an online form to register your details. Under the policy, homeowners have 12 months to register interest, and need to choose a contractor of their choice to complete the repair. Hamish Wright says the company has seen a recent surge in the number of ‘on-sold’ property owners contacting them directly. “Homeowners are doing their due diligence. They have seen the number of repairs we have been involved in and

understand that we have access to all the experts required to take the stress out of the repair for them.” Contracted directly to you – with EQC responsible for payment – Hamish and Operations Manager Steve Cole team up with a group of trusted architects, engineers, and surveyors that they have been working with for a number of years. There are 25 on the in-house team including five licenced building practitioners, concrete repair specialists and quantity surveyors, plus they do their own house lifting and foundation replacements, and relevels. If you have cash settled your claim, or believe you may qualify for the on-sold over-cap policy, Wrightway Construction is happy to do a free assessment for you. “We start from the beginning with you, from scoping through to quoting, project management, compliance, and sign-off,” Steve says. “We know how stressful this process has been for people,” Hamish adds. “We want to ensure they can move on with their lives with peace of mind that their home has been well-repaired for them and their families.”

Moving On

Christmas is the time for families, making memories and celebrating. For some of us, this is the time that we notice that our parents have aged. They walk a bit slower, simple tasks are no longer as easy as they were and you see them struggling. Making the decision to talk to them about a retirement village will be one of the hardest things you do… although you know it is in their best interest.

anterbury Movers are the experts in all things moving and relocating, and their new division, Senior Moves, has been established to help during this emotional time. “Through personal experience within my own family, I realised there was no relocation company providing a dedicated relocation service geared toward accommodating the needs and issues faced by our senior folk, particularly when down-sizing from the family home where they have been for years,” Pat says. Subsequently, Canterbury Movers’ ‘Senior Care Relocations’ service was established, and Pat hasn’t looked back. Canterbury Movers are the only company offering this exclusive service. You will be dealing with Pat and his team from the initial consultation, until your family member is settled into their new home. As there are no subcontractors or other companies involved in the process of the care of your loved one’s belongings, the process is smooth and stress-free. With Pat’s 30 years’ experience, you know you are working with the best. After an initial consultation with Pat, you can rest assured that your family member’s belongings are treated with the same care and respect as your family member. Household items can then be moved by the professional team to any retirement home South Island-wide. With the professional packing service Canterbury Movers offers, you can trust all the precious items will be packed and transported with the utmost care. Once these personal items have arrived at the new home, Canterbury Movers can unpack, set up furniture and beds and remove all packing materials. With the downsizing of your parent’s home there tends to be items left behind after the move; these items can be handled by Canterbury Movers. Whether it is large items to be moved to another family member’s home, donations to charity or removing of items to be disposed of, Canterbury Movers can do it all. The Canterbury Movers team will work to the timelines that suit you and can liaise with the retirement home for delivery details. This will ensure a seamless transition for your family member to their new home surrounded by their memories and treasured possessions. If there is a delay for any reason during the move, Canterbury Movers can arrange safe and secure storage with full insurance for your peace of mind. This means that Canterbury Movers can move your items from home, to storage, to the new home of your family member. After the move is complete, the team at Canterbury Movers can arrange cleaning, maintenance and/or rubbish removal at the property. eing shortsighted has been a big bonus for celebrity cook Jax Hamilton. She has a designated drawer for her 36 pairs of spectacular spectacles and eight pairs of prescription sunglasses. “No one bats an eyelid that I have 60 pairs of shoes,” she says. “So why not have loads of glasses – and they don’t have to break the bank.” Jax even has her own name for signature eyewear. “I don’t call them glasses, I call them face furniture. I see them as an integral part of my face, just like a couch is integral to the living room. They are a part of who I

am – it’s my dreads, glasses, and Cockney accent!” Preferring her accessories large and loud, she wears big square or hexagonal shapes when she’s out and about. However, at home in Christchurch, Jax will be relaxing in her PJs with a smaller,

comfortable, round Harry Potter-esque pair. The colourful character is attracted to bright, bold colours like reds and blues, and her newest pair is always her fave – her latest being black bat-winged prescription sunnies with wide tortoiseshell arms. “I feel like a diva,” she laughs.

“I love them.” Jax always has four pairs with her when she goes out, and at least six when travelling. “As for me, it’s always how I feel at the time. I buy my glasses locally from Bailey Nelson, and it literally takes about 40 seconds to choose a pair.” The trends to try on next year for 2020 vision are bejewelled, oversized, funky cat-eye, brow bar, and big, bold geometric shapes – so Jax will be in her element. “It’s not if they suit me, it’s more about having the confidence to wear them. Most of mine are out-there – I just put them on and rock it.’

What do you love about designing? Starting a new seasonal range; travelling to new destinations and experiencing different environments; listening to feedback from customers and hard-working retailers to provide garments that women love to wear. Is there a Lania look? Lania is all about natural fibres and comfort; garments that provide both fashion and function, whether you’re working, travelling, or spending time with friends. Do you favour any particular colour scheme? I love khakis, inks, blues and berries, and a touch of soft floral… creating femininity with an edge!

Clothes Women Love

Any favourite fabrics? Lania loves quality natural fibres and textures. I love working with denim; hand feel and fit are important to me; there’s always a new take on denim.

Fashion Designer Rose Keys talks fashion and designing for Lania The Label.

Where did your journey into fashion begin? From a young age I was fascinated by fabrics and textures, and I was encouraged to follow what I loved. I often remind myself that I do love the business, as fashion involves many emotions and hard work.

How did Lania The Label come about? After 15 years designing the Verge brand, I took time out before starting my own clothes brand – Fray The Label, which was recently bought by Longbeach and rebranded to Lania The Label.

An unforgettable Rose Keys design would be of…? Heavy silk in rich colours, beautiful clean lines and draping to create a vision of simplicity. www.laniathelabel.co.nz or on Facebook @laniathelabel

Savvy advice from a retail expert An experienced consultant will often coax the shopper to have a try on of something that’s not their usual pick. Humour them. It might be a pleasant surprise, a game-changer even. They’ve seen all shapes squeeze into styles – and are in the know when it comes to what fits and flatters. From head to toe We can cling to hairstyles in habitual comfort – however, the new energy of a complete change in hairstyle is empowering. If you haven’t got any colourful or shimmery sandals, lay safe blacks to rest, and walk on sunshine for the summer of 2020. For those firmly grounded in flatties, there’s high heels that still feel like slippers, and conversely, flats with chunky platforms for high-heel confidence.

4 5 6

You deserve it Buy that outfit you adore – the one you can’t really afford or see as too glamorous, but can’t stop thinking about. That’s not an impulse buy; it’s fate! Instead of drooling over fashion pages with wishful admiration, imagine yourself there, and recreate a completely new look to suit your budget. Embrace the future Metallics will be synonymous with the sci-fi-sounding 2020s – so have some fun with futuristic fabrics. Leggings have been synonymous with the 2010’s, so leg it out of this last decade and try on hot pants, suits, or high-waisted loose-fitting pants. We’re going to be time-travelling in fashion to both past decades and futuristic times – fasten your belts! Rule out old rules Fashion is now delectably ageless. Fabrics are flattering, trends are flexible, and boundaries keep on blurring. You can still wear a maxi skirt if you’re pint-sized, outthere colours and cut-out styles if you’re over 50, sportswear if you can’t run a mile – and plus-sized models remind us to love our bodies. Let the world know that leopards can change their spots – however we hear that rich yellows and polka dots are on the catwalks for 2020!

A little help from my friends A good friend is an honest one. They see the 360 degree version of their favourite person the most. Ask all your friends their advice and see if there’s a common thread. Be the influencer and lead the way amongst your peers. Have a blast trying on new styles together. Perhaps experiment with new looks, shapes and colours at affordable pre-loved fashion outlets such as Nurse Maude Hospice stores. “That’s so you!” is what we love to hear. But imagine the squeals of glee as their demure, minimalist mate rocks up in a ruffled frock in lime green.

So very beautiful Fortunately for Canterbury women, clothing boutique Molto Bella – is no longer Rangiora’s best kept secret. Here is where they will find that beautiful something that’s unique, made of natural fibres and is Italian made.

P

roprietor Anette Drewery travels to the most prestigious of international fashion shows every year to

scout out the latest looks and trends to bring back home. Sifting through the racks of her clothing collections is one

of the most pleasurable pursuits imaginable, as the eyes feast on labels like Haben, showcasing garments nothing short of

delightful, such as a quirky plaid tunic and skirt in cream, charcoal and French Navy; while Purolino (from Positano) features dustercoats in crisp blue and white, in homage, perhaps, to their place of creation, “where Mount Vesuvius meets the sea of the Gulf of Naples”. For avant-garde at its most superb, nobody does it better than Corrina Caon, while Sunshine and Made in Italy flaunt all the verve, vividness and romance of Mediterranean climes in frills, lace and gossamer silk. Italian leather handbags, exquisite scarves and jewellery, not to mention stunning homewares such as cute and clever cushions, dreamy drapes for a pretty partition, heavenly candles to scent your favourite room, and must-have décor magazine Jeanne d’Arc, best encapsulate the ethos of Molto Bella. Visit Molto Bella at 199 High Street, Rangiora or go online for convenient inspiration to make this summer unforgettably beautiful! Can you tell us about your SISTERS collection and what this means to you? The SISTERS collection is a collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, and it’s focused on celebrating and bringing attention to women’s sexual and maternal health. The title SISTERS is influenced by the powerful bonds that exist between women and girls in our contemporary global society and the partnership wishes to emphasise the importance of sisterhood in times of rapid and turbulent social change. The collection symbolises the collaborative power of sisterhood: the coming together of women to mobilise and build support

systems – to fulfil the promise of rights and choices for all. The work was influenced by messages around gender, bodily autonomy, and women’s rights, using dialogue between theory and practice to support expanded ways of thinking, being and doing fashion. The capsule collection is created on a craftsmanship level, incorporating traditional techniques that would have been seen traditionally as female-centric skills, and using these in innovative ways, while reinforcing the mandate of the UNFPA through the symbolic prints. Clothing skills and traditional crafting techniques unite women all over the world, providing independence to support families, educate, upskil,l and self-belief through equity. The collaboration tells a strong message of female empowerment, solidarity, reproductive rights, and sisterhood. The capsule collection consists of screenprinted sweatshirts, t-shirts, hoodies, and printed silk scarves that are sustainably produced, 100% organic and screen printed by hand in Ireland. The prints tackle the issue of culture, how female sexuality is presented through design by subverting masculine imagery and historical and archival references and changing them into empowering, rebellious and strong imagery.

SISTERS TWISTED SWORD SCRAF $629.00

What attracted you to the design world? I have always been interested in the transformative nature of clothing; the storytelling aspect of dressing up. And now I am very much inspired by how many cultural codes a piece of clothing can carry. Fashion reflects cultural perceptions, it reinforces values, definitions and norms, and I am working towards my designs making a difference, breaking down stigmas and taboos. I also adore women and I love dressing them; I love how clothes can transform how you feel and what message they can give out to the world about who you are.

Why was FGM such an important practice for you to bring awareness to? Female genital mutilation is an erasure of female power; the effects of mutilating a woman sexually have repercussions for the rest of these women’s lives, in terms of body image, intercourse and giving birth. Infertility, repeated infections, even child and mother mortality in severe cases, are some of the short and long-term complications from female genital mutilation that are profoundly damaging and a violation of human rights. In a lot of these cases the sufferers are not old enough to give consent let alone understand the procedure, which is often preformed under inhumane conditions. It was necessary for us to bring as much awareness to the cause to end this outdated practice.

How have you captured the symbolism of this movement within the designs? Using the typography SISTERS printed through the collection as a way of connecting the sisterhood, and each of our printed silk scarves is rich in meaning. We adapted a very wellknown image from Islamic fundamentalism and from this constructed a logo from swords which aims to operate as a brand mark for a resistance movement against the symbolic obliteration of female genitalia. This motif reacts as an organised resistance and manifesto; a symbolic opening is held apart with a sword. The twotone colourway represents cause and effect, the reason (the drop) and the result (the star). This acts as a call to arms. This print is on some t-shirt dresses and scarves.

What hunger are you feeding? In a world where people are bombarded with celebrity diets and images of photoshopped bodies, disordered eating has become the new normal while our body’s natural hunger cues are being ignored.

O

xford Women’s Health Dietitian Sara Widdowson is encouraging people to recognise what hunger they are actually feeding, when it comes to our complicated relationship with body image and food. Sara says humans are born intuitive eaters, meaning they listen to their body’s hunger

and fullness cues. For example, a baby may cry when they are hungry and stop when they are full. Although body shapes are incredibly diverse, when people begin to develop a sense of self-image around ages five-seven, the body’s natural hunger cues can become blurred as weight-related

Having a healthy relationship with food and ensuring your body is getting the nutrients that it needs is paramount. “People can be healthy at all sizes, so we need to focus on health-related goals rather than stigma pressures people to weight-related goals. THOSE

hearing aids are sexy The team at Hear Again has been collectively solving hearing problems for over 50 years and thought they had seen and heard everything when it comes to hearing loss and hearing aids – until today! When being shown the very latest rechargeable, made-for-iPhone hearing aids, one of their longstanding clients exclaimed, “Man, those hearing aids are sexy!” This created a great laugh in the clinic: something which happens on a regular basis at Hear Again.

“M

any people are really concerned about having their hearing tested and the thought of having to wear hearing aids,” explains Managing Director and NZAS Audiometrist Steve Foster. Because of this, the team at Hear Again are

passionate about making the process a fun and enjoyable experience for you. “We hear too many complaints from people about feeling they have been treated as a number, rather than a person,” says Steve. “Never seeing the same person twice

and feeling you are being rushed through a process which is an emotional thing for you is not comfortable.” Director and General Manager Samantha Foster encourages anyone with hearing problems to not delay and have this checked.

“A hearing check is free and takes only a few minutes to complete. We even open on a Saturday if you work during the week,” says Samantha. “We have over 7000 very happy clients who have trusted us with their hearing care and regularly recommend us to their friends and family. We are incredibly grateful for the trust they have placed in us and do everything we can to ensure their ongoing hearing care is a pleasurable experience.” And the new hearing aids really are sexy! With the ability to stream sound directly from your smartphone or a transmitter plugged into your TV, they become an almost invisible extension to your connected life; all for a great price, starting at only $495 assuming you are eligible for a government subsidy for hearing aids. You may even be entitled to hearing aids at no cost at all, depending on your work history, exposure to industrial noise or military service! So, don’t delay: contact the friendly, fun and professional team at Hear Again at The Hub Hornby, and get your sexy on!

Bonkers for bamboo By Jess Murray

This summer we’re bonkers for bamboo. While the material does make for great home furniture, it also takes centre stage in the fashion world – the reason being they’re extremely lightweight and compliment almost any outfit. You’ll definitely be the envy among your peers with this purchase.

L

CUSTOM ENGAGEMENT RINGS

ike most other bags, you can choose the style and shape to suit you. Some may prefer a clutch and others a shoulder strap. Either way, it’s a wardrobe must-have – think of the ‘summer vibes’ it will bring to your collection of clothes. The bamboo bag or clutch provides a casual appearance without compromising on style. A great thing about these bags is that you can find them at several different price points. From the high-end designers such as Yves Saint Laurent to the bustling Bali

street markets for a bartereddown price – anyone can feel ‘bad and boujee’ as long as they wear it with confidence. But if you’re sick of hearing about how you can wear must-have items this summer, you could always just prepare for winter by purchasing a bamboo bag in black and pairing it with a huge winter jacket. They’re really such versatile bags! Just make sure not to accidentally drop it into the panda enclosure at the zoo… you won’t be getting that back.

CHEWY CARAMELS WITH SALTED PEANUTS Not only are these chewy caramels with salted peanuts a delectable treat for the Christmas table, they’re also the ultimate little gift, wrapped up for a loved one. INGREDIENTS 3 cups (420g) salted peanuts 1.1kg white (granulated) sugar 1.125L single (pouring) cream 1 cup (350g) golden syrup 100g unsalted butter, chopped

MAKES

50

METHOD Line a 20cm x 30cm slice tin with non-stick baking paper. Sprinkle the base with half the peanuts and set aside. Place the sugar, cream, golden syrup and butter in a large saucepan over high heat and stir with a metal spoon until the butter and sugar have melted. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, stirring, for 20–25 minutes or until the temperature reaches 122°C (251°F) on a sugar (candy) thermometer. Working quickly, pour the caramel into the tin and carefully sprinkle with the remaining 1½ cups (210g) of peanuts. Allow to cool completely at room temperature for 3–4 hours. Refrigerate for 25–30 minutes or until firm. Turn the caramel out onto a board and, using a large sharp knife, cut into pieces*. Wrap each caramel in brown wax paper, twisting the ends to seal. Keep refrigerated and bring to room temperature to serve. * If the caramel becomes too soft to cut, simply return it to the refrigerator for five minutes. Pro tip: Store caramels, wrapped in paper, in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

PROSECCO-BRINED TURKEY BREAST WITH BRUSSELS SPROUTS AND SPECK The ultimate Christmas feast, this prosecco brined turkey breast is the best way to get your guests talking. METHOD Place the salt, sugar, tarragon, thyme, lemon and two cups (500ml) of the water in a medium saucepan over high heat. Bring to the boil and cook for four minutes, stirring to dissolve the salt. Allow to cool slightly. Pour the brining liquid into a large (five-litrecapacity) non-reactive container*. Add the prosecco and another two cups (500ml) of the water. Using your hands, carefully loosen the skin from the flesh of the turkey breasts. Lower the turkey, skin-side down, into the brine. Cover and refrigerate for two hours (but no longer). To make the lemon garlic butter, place the butter, garlic and lemon rind in a small bowl and mix to combine. Remove the turkey from the container, discarding the brine, and pat dry with absorbent kitchen paper. Using your hands, spread the lemon garlic butter under the skin. Place the oil in a large heavy-based frying pan over medium heat. Sprinkle the turkey 46 12 December, 2019 Metropol

with salt and pepper. Add one turkey breast to the pan, skin-side down. Cook for four minutes each side or until golden brown. Remove from the pan and repeat with the remaining turkey. Return both turkey breasts to the pan, skin-side up. Add the remaining one cup (250ml) of water, cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook for 20 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Remove the turkey from the pan, loosely cover with aluminium foil and reserve the cooking liquid. Wipe the pan out and return to medium heat. Add the speck and cook, stirring, for four minutes or until crispy. Remove and set aside. Increase the heat to high, add the brussels sprouts and cook, stirring, for one minute or until lightly charred. Add the extra thyme and reserved liquid and cook for two minutes. Serve turkey with the sprouts and crispy speck. * Non-reactive materials include glass, plastic and stainless steel.

INGREDIENTS ¼ cup (75g) rock salt ¼ cup (45g) light brown sugar 2 sprigs tarragon 2 bunches thyme (about 12 sprigs) 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1.25L water 3 cups (750ml) prosecco 2 x 1.5kg turkey breast fillets, skin on 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Sea salt and cracked black pepper 350g speck or bacon, chopped 500g brussels sprouts, halved 1 bunch thyme (about 6 sprigs), extra Lemon garlic butter 100g unsalted butter, softened 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind

he new owners took over in April 2018 and ensure standards are kept consistently high. “Customer satisfaction is very important to us, with both the standard of our food and our service,” Manager Gagandeep Kaur says. “Whether dining in, takeaway or delivery, we always ask for feedback, so we can provide continued excellence and quality.” The menu is filled with an extensive range of top-notch Northern Indian fare, including

the ever-popular Indo-Chinese dishes, such as Chicken Manchurian – tender, boneless chicken cubes marinated with spices and deep-fried, cooked with capsicum, onion, garlic and a blend of soy sauce, chili sauce and vinegar. For Butter Chicken lovers, the Badam Pasanda is a must-try. For couples or groups wanting to taste a variety of flavours, sharing a platter is a fabulous option. Described as a hidden gem tucked away in Addington Square, customers appreciate the lovely, casual environment, friendly and informative staff, quick service and generous portions. The small restaurant only seats up to 35 people, so the quieter atmosphere means easier conversations. The $13 dine-in lunch special includes curry, rice, poppadum and naan bread, or takeaway for just $12. For those with a sweet tooth, the chocolate naan bread is a lovely dessert to finish. Open Tuesday to Saturday 11:30am-2:30pm and 4.30pm to 9:30pm, Sunday 5pm-9:30pm. Visit www.pepperbridgeindian. co.nz for more information or phone 03 595 0442 to book.

hether it’s time for brunch, lunch, a relaxing coffee in the sunshine, or a chance to pick up any last minute essentials, you’ll find it’s the perfect place for a break as you travel the beautiful stretch of Christchurch Akaroa Road. Cam Gordon has been running the business for the past 10 years alongside co-owners, his partner Jess Morrison and her mother Claire Cameron. “We keep getting busier each year,” he says. “Summer’s coming so it’s going to be increasing from now on.” The passionate foodies are dedicated to providing a varied menu that changes by the day,

Cam is especially proud of the popular Keto Haloumi Bagels, Cheesecakes, and the Ultimate Keto Benedict, served without bread and potatoes. “We focus on old-school home-style food made to a high standard, and a varied cabinet range. “Tourists come in summer from all over and people share their experience word of mouth, too.” Little River Café & Store use as much local produce as possible, so you can sample regional olive oils, nuts, Akaroa

Top tips for the table

Christmas is almost here, so if it’s a flawless dinner table you’re after, look no further. First things first – where will you have your festive feast? If it’s outside, make sure the table is on a level surface. Depending on your taste, minimalism is always a good idea, so the table isn’t overcrowded. Decorations can be hung from the ceiling above the table to save space. Co-ordination is key. Pick a colour scheme – three colours is ideal. Silver, white and green; red, white and gold… A linen tablecloth in a single soft colour, such as khaki or dark grey, makes for a practical canvas for decorations. Offset this with crisp white linen napkins folded underneath polished cutlery for a clean, elegant look. Natural materials give a rustic touch, and they’re sustainable too. Try strewing the table with branches and pinecones – metallic spray paint can jazz these up. Consider utilising items you already have, or buy decorations that won’t date or can be reused.

6 7 8 9 10

Little fairy lights or candles give ambience – even in the middle of the day. A popular idea is to stuff strings of thin fairy lights into jars and dot them down the middle of the table. Make sure your flowers align with your colour scheme nicely. Pohutukawas give any table a festive Kiwi touch, while foliage intertwined down the middle of the table offers a pretty, rustic feel. If you’re going to put flowers in vases, make sure the height is just right. You need to be able to see and talk to the person sitting opposite you. Make sure cutlery, glasses and other utensils are the same for a flawless finish. We recommend keeping food off the table and serving from the breakfast bar/bench instead, in order to keep the table from getting too messy.

The built-in plywood bench seat brings an architectural dimension to the room, with the wall and bench seat top finished in Resene Colorwood Whitewash. The cupboards in front are finished in Resene Colorwood Greywash stain and Resene Raindance paint. Pull up a chair and add a coffee table painted in Resene Poured Milk (top) and Resene Quarter Baltic Sea (legs). The walls, painted in Resene Sea Fog, make for a cool-based white backdrop. Add a collection of ornaments painted in Resene Poured Milk (candlestick), Resene Lazy River (honeycomb vase), Resene Raindance (textured vase) and Resene Influential (diamondpatterned pot). Working superbly as neutrals, these soothing colours are easy to insert into most interior schemes. The palest watery blue works as an alternative for icy white yet still allows stronger colours to come and go as accessories, or to marry with more grounded tones in warm browns and sandy taupes. Tactile accessories and texture are made for these colours, whether it’s translucent sheer fabrics, rubbed metals, roughened basketry or aged timbers.

Organising your house for By Tracey Edwardes

Having a home that is well-prepared for Christmas partying is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Something you have forgotten to do, buy or organise can easily chomp away at your sanity. So we’ve put together some fail-safe tips to get you through the silly season.

58 12 December, 2019 Metropol

Double up Rolls of cellotape; slippery little things… they go missing just when you’re wrapping that extra parcel – so plant some around the house. The same goes for scissors, gift tags, bows, pens and other such items that grow legs and play hide and seek. Make sure you know where the spare sets of keys are hidden. The silly season rush catches up with the most organised among us – and Murphy’s Law often rules. There’s just no time to hunt. Have extras – like batteries, cell phone chargers, top-up medication, bottled water, or any essentials that you often run out of, or misplace – on hand. Last minute dashes to the store battling the queues, only interferes with the tick tock of the to-do list. Reminders Post-it notes – they can blend in with the Christmas decorations quite easily, especially if you choose the creative variety. No amount of technology can replace these bright, cheery, in-your-face reminders, especially when our holiday brains are jumping around like reindeers. Keep lists on your phone, on the fridge, beside the bed, anywhere. Just be sure to check them twice! Fun-filled festivities Drag out any fun-filled activities, games and silly season Christmasthemed anything. ‘Tis the season for lights, bells and whistles of a frivolous, festive nature. Dedicate an area of the home for crazy chaos, and forget the vacuuming here. Remember the playful pets too – or your decorations may be toast. Take stock Are there enough glasses, crockery, water jugs and other utensils for an extended family visit? Invest in plenty of festive serviettes – they add to the occasion as well as save on washing up for that nibble or slice of cake. Wine glass tags are a savvy additional to banish that ‘is this glass mine?’ mix-up for good. Savvy seating Organise extra seating for the dining table or lounge if you need to, and be prepared for indoors and outdoors. There might be a few spills among the thrills, so enrobe the new couch with a colourful throw. Make more room for gatherings, and store away any extraneous items that clutter the festive home, or block the runway for excited little elves. Health and safety As the party season sizzles, so does the summer heat. Give the pets extra large bowls for their water. Remove any fire hazards from the property, such as trimming trees away from the house. Check the first-aid kit and have extra suntan lotion on hand. Double check the wiring on last season’s fairy lights.

The more organised the home is for Christmas, the extra warmth it will exude – and it will spell vamoose to any stressful vibes. Create an organised haven for relaxing merriment and there’ll be extra time to spend with those that are lonely during this joyful time. Metropol 12 December, 2019 59

home

Prepare the festivities It’s time to free up the freezer and make space for those holiday goodies. Pack in plenty of party ice. Stock up on artisan canapés and satiating savouries to pop in the oven for hungry visitors. Pre-freeze what Christmas fare you can. Christmas-coloured frozen berries make instant smoothies, sorbets, desserts, and cool off a glass of bubbly fast. Borrow or buy a handy bar fridge. Fill up the pantry with extra food – it is better to have unperishable surplus than to run out. Ensure your herb garden is abundant. Snap up the home baking with Christmas bows from the farmers markets and fairs. These Christmas treats can double up as last minute gifts for surprise visitors, or someone you’ve forgotten. Thoughtfully have the likes of gluten free, vegan and low-carb supplies on hand. Bowls of cherries top the list!

something different to the big chain retail approach. The Welder complex on Welles Street, with a health and wellbeing focus, is another great example of this. You’ll also find a dash of character in the SALT district, home to some cool heritage buildings and alternative eateries such as Little High Eatery. The inner city is now generally well set-up for shopping, enlivened by Melbourne-style laneways. Of course, the Arts Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery and Canterbury Museum are other familiar drawcards, along with the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Not everything has happened as quickly as hoped in the city. Yet at least the end is in sight for some big projects, such as Te Pae and the new Metro Sports Facility (due to be finished in late 2021). Stabilisation work is soon to begin on Christ Church Cathedral and the council plans to put an investment case to Cabinet for Christchurch’s new stadium by Christmas. There is much else to be excited about, such as the planned new Court Theatre in the city’s performing arts precinct. While we wait, there’s a nearby colony of black-billed gulls, tarāpuka, in the flooded foundations of the former PWC building site providing quite a show. If you’re here over summer with family, I recommend adding it to your itinerary of things to see and do in Christchurch! www.allso.co.nz

on architecture (ArchiChat) there at Auaha Hīhī (Spark Place), a ground-floor meeting space. This world-class facility is truly multi-purpose, serving not just as an information hub, but also as a fitfor-purpose centre of engagement and interaction. Christchurch’s new waterfront is flourishing. The City Promenade – part of Te Papa Ōtakaro/Avon River Precinct – opened just over a year ago, running along Oxford Terrace. If you do nothing else this summer, do take a stroll along this well-paved riverside walk that passes by the Canterbury Earthquake Memorial, the Bridge of Remembrance, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre (scheduled to open in October 2020) and Victoria Square to the Margaret Mahy Family Playground. Along the way, you can stop and visit Christchurch’s hospitality hotspots at The Terrace or the bustling new Riverside Market development that boasts an indoor farmers market, linked with boutique shops, restaurants, cafés and bars. The market’s lively mix of local growers and small traders makes this place a real stand-out. It’s on an intimate scale that people just love and it certainly makes a change from the suburban malls. It’s exciting to see Christchurch evolving into an innovative, liveable city that includes these sorts of hubs or small communities of businesses offering

Here comes the bride! By Terra Viva Owner Peter Worsp

Yes, we’re in wedding season again with sunny skies ahead and long balmy evenings just made for celebrating outdoors.

W

e get regular requests from the hassled bride’s mother about having the garden pictureperfect for the big day, or for the next day’s after-match function. So here are a few pointers to get the wedding look – easily. First pointer, don’t let ‘garden stress’ spoil what should be a fun party for everyone, including the hosts. Everyone’s there to have a memorable time, not to pick over the garden looking for weeds. Talking loudly, laughing and inhaling your expensive bubbly will blur any detailed memories of the garden.

Green lawns, trimmed edges/ hedges instantly give the garden a manicured look and mowing regularly for the three weeks prior avoids the ‘scalped’ look. Feed the lawn six weeks before the big day and water deeply if there’s no rain around. A final mow three days before the wedding gives the best look. Focal points of massed colour are the easiest way to create the ‘wow!’ factor as guests arrive and mingle. Large tubs of a single colour of flower are the most eye-catching and place them where they’ll have the most effect. Make sure there’s enough room for two people to walk between them – very

important for the bride and groom! The front gate, the front door, entrances to pergolas or marquees, beside gaps through hedges and gates to pool areas are all focal points. The scale changes with large numbers of people, so large tubs have more impact. Roses really set the scene and “How can I have the perfect roses just at the right time?” is probably the pre-wedding question we get asked the most. Water is the basic requirement of roses and it’s almost impossible to over-water them. Trickling a hose steadily at the base is the best way

to water, rather than on the foliage, but if you can’t avoid overhead watering do it first thing in the morning, rather than the evening. Feeding six weeks before the required date promotes fresh, new, clean growth, and the period from pruning to flowering is around six weeks. Regular spraying halts pests and diseases – if you need any advice on roses just ring or call us. Flower beds can easily be a riot of colour all through summer with a bit of TLC and the good old reliable varieties are still the way to go – white petunias, white alyssum, lobelia, blue cornflowers, cream marigolds, white cosmos, blue salvias, and white impatiens in shade. Pockets of summer annuals will reinforce your colour schemes and larger numbers of less varieties will have maximum impact. Rows of geraniums in terracotta pots are simple and effective. Weddings can be a once-in-alifetime event – enjoy the fun!

A retail upgrade Christchurch’s Priority Projects has now completed full earthquake strengthening to the buildings located at Walker Court, with the tenants remaining operational throughout the process.

he retail outlet, home to Burnsco and Paramount Pools, is located at 75 Blenheim Road and made up of four units, across single and double levels. The Canterbury fit-out, designbuild and project management company has upgraded the buildings to 100 percent of the NBS code, which includes substantial new structural steel, upgrade of accessible facilities, new roof and fire protection systems. Project Manager Kim Lowry says this was a complex project, but everything was completed

on time with the anchor tenants remaining operational throughout and efforts made to minimise the effect on their trading. They are now seeking tenants for two lovely vacant units on the same site. Priority Projects has undertaken some major concept-to-completion strengthening work since the Canterbury earthquakes, namely Go Bus & Flip Out headquarters at 230 Maces Road, Chester Street Apartments, Harcourts Division Street in Riccarton, and significant residential rebuilds for existing clients. Since 2009, Director Steve Brownie and the team have been offering comprehensive project management of commercial fit-outs, design-builds, feasibility studies, earthquake repairs, rebuilds and new construction projects, that all stick to the core values of priority service, quality, value and results. FUN WITH POWER

motoring

By Nicholas Henare

THE MITSUBISHI 20MY OUTLANDER HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST SURPRISINGLY ENJOYABLE DRIVES I’VE HAD THIS YEAR. THE PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (PHEV) GAVE A RANGE OF 55KM AND THE AVERAGE PERSON DRIVES 32KM A DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH, ACCORDING TO CHRISTCHURCH MITSUBISHI FLEET SALES MANAGER DAVID BOYCE. THE SUNROOF WAS GREAT AND THE DRIVE WAS FANTASTIC.

S

o I was looking forward to moving into the ASX VRX. 2.4L in Sunshine Orange. No sunroof but a moonroof option – most of the roof is glass! Priced at $34,990 with cool alloy pedals and 18inch alloy rims, plus 125kW and 226 Nm, it gave me a wee thrill to drive. It also has some cool little fender side guards, Apple Car Play with six speakers, and elegant leather seating. Now this is the top model with the lesser versions, the LS and XLS, coming in with a bit less flash and grunt but overall its got a pretty great feel to it…. other than Sunshine Orange. I mean I know it’s

a press model, but as someone said, you have to be brave to drive that colour. There’s also LED lighting and an 8-inch touch screen which, coming in at that price, equates to a lot of bang for your buck. The piano black and satin grille is nice, and I like the lighting set up. It’s a bit old fashioned with a manual handbrake but then again, I’m a bit old too. Yes the Outlander 20MY PHEV may have stolen my heart for a fun, wellpowered SUV in a hybrid model, but I’m not complaining about the ASX…. just the colour. It’s time to take it for a test drive!

A DYNAMIC DRIVE

T

he $39,990 RS Sensing is extraordinary value considering what you get. Under the bonnet sits a 1.5 litre Turbo VTEC four-cylinder engine mated to Honda’s seven speed CVT auto with paddle shift. While not much to look at, you still get 127kW and 220Nm of torque, while returning 6.3L/100km respectively. Honda has also crammed the RS Sensing into the kit too. Settle into those leather clad sports seats and you find adaptive cruise control, auto high beam, parking sensors front and rear, reversing camera, lane keep assist, collision mitigation braking, which sends you a visual alert on your instrument cluster if you are approaching the car in front too closely, and a wing-mounted camera which allows you to monitor your blind spot while changing lanes from the infotainment screen. Thanks to upgrades to the suspension and bushings, the Civic RS Sensing is a much more dynamic drive than before. Steering is nicely weighted and you can coax the Sensing into the twisty stuff with little effort required. All in all, the Civic RS Sensing is a solid effort from Honda and represents stunning value for money. This one is definitely worth a look.

By Ben Selby

It is really hard not to be at least a little bit impressed with the new Honda Civic RS Sensing. While the last bit of the name does seem a tad strange at first, it becomes clear the tenth generation of one of Honda’s most cherished models, makes more ‘sense’ than ever before.

ston Martin has gone two steps further to separate the V12 from the V8 in the line-up. Enter the $355,000 DB11 AMR; the Grand Tourer with the attitude that the DB11 V12 always should have. Where does the AMR come in? These three initials stand for Aston Martin Racing, a name given to faster, race-inspired Astons of recent years. The AMR also officially replaces the standard DB11 V12 in the range. Under the bonnet, the 5.2-litre twin turbo V12 gets 22kW more than the outgoing DB11 V12, bringing total power output to 470kW/700Nm. Coupled to Aston’s slick eight-speed-automatic gearbox, zero to 100km/h is dealt with in 3.7 seconds. Sure, you will be doing 11.4L/100km, but that is not why you bought one is it? The AMR gets a larger front anti-roll bar, the rear suspension has been retuned to give a sportier feel, the dampers both front and rear have also been revised for the same reason, and that V12 is even louder. Inside, you do get all the fruit as before, but the Mercedes switchgear and infotainment screen feel a tad out of place in a car which costs in excess of $350,000. Sure, it is very responsive and will do the job of working the nav, Bluetooth etc, but it just doesn’t feel bespoke enough for the AMR. With a high transmission tunnel and hiphugging leather chairs, you do feel rather cocooned by your surroundings. In fact, the driving position as a whole is nigh on

perfect. Though, the lack of a glovebox is odd. As per the Vantage, you can fiddle about with the damping and engine modes by pressing the two buttons on either side of the wheel, with three modes, GT, Sport and Sport Plus, available for each. With a wheelbase of 2802mm, and 4739mm from nose to tail, the DB11 is certainly no point-and-shoot sports car. That said, around town, the AMR, despite its sportier pretensions and feeling bigger than it actually is, manages to be quite easy to manoeuvre and doesn’t feel daunting by any means. With the engine and dampers in GT mode, the AMR can eat up the miles, but in the flowing twisting country backroads, the AMR tweaks make themselves known. You can carry a great deal of speed into each bend, with little effort required to coax it into the corner. Plus, when you lift off, the exhaust crackles like a far-off battlefield. Switch the dampers and engine into Sport Plus, and the AMR gets serious. Those mods to the chassis and the suspension makes it live and supple. Steering weights up beautifully and standing on the anchors means you come to a dead stop in quick succession. The DB11 no longer suffers from middle child syndrome. The AMR package turns the DB11 V12 from a fine tourer into a seriously desirable sporting package.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!
