t seems despite the years disappearing before our very eyes, what has endured the passing of time is the sense of anticipation for the annual pilgrimage to St Nick. In fact, my own eager excitement ahead of the forthcoming silly season has further strengthened over time. For me personally, this has been more evident since having children. There’s something pretty special about seeing their faces light up with delight, and not just when it comes to opening up presents! Children derive so much joy from the act of giving. Gift giving is a custom that can be found in all cultures and evidence of its existence dates back to prehistoric cultures; the symbolic giving and receiving of gifts being the social glue that makes possible the friendships, loyalties, alliances and coalitions upon which all human social organisations, ultimately rest. Let us not forget however, the true beauty of Christmas – the reunification of scattered family and friends, the additional time to do so with annual work breaks, ABCthe AUDITED opportunity to provide a physical imitation of one’s love and also a reminder of the importance of all of the above. Elaine Paige, the queen of musical theatre, is heading to our southern city with a show at Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal on Monday 21 January.

he English singer and actress has built a stellar career, with some laudable performances, including the role of Eva Perón in the first

production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita in 1978, which made her a household name. We caught up with Elaine to discuss her illustrious career.

What attracted you to singing and performing? Academically I was not that interested; I was always much more about the vocational things in life. Singing was something I knew I loved; I was in the school choir, did the end of school productions. Dad asked me if I would like to go to drama school. I’m always grateful he made that suggestion. I’m not altogether sure I would have come to that myself. From a middle class family, we knew nothing about drama schools or anything of that ilk. Pretending to be someone else appealed to me, so I went to drama school and that’s how it all began. What are some of your career highlights? Evita will be one of the major highlights. Having the opportunity to originate the role of Eva Peron gave me a career in musical theatre, so that will always be the one that

is most special to me. I was able to pick and choose after Evita what roles I wanted to play. I was very fortunate to find myself in a very privileged position that gave me a career and choice. You’ve performed at some of the biggest venues around the world, what are you looking forward to about performing in New Zealand? I’ve come ‘Down Under’ to New Zealand and Australia several times during my career, although I haven’t been your way in half a dozen years. So I’m really looking forward to visiting and seeing the changes. Equally it’s like coming home really because New Zealand is so similar to England. That’s what I like about it. People are always very welcoming and in the past have come out to see me, so I’m hoping I can enjoy the same this time around. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? I’ve always worked very hard, many hours, done many different things. Next year I’m coming to see you in January, then when I come back to England there’s some television on the cards, a play I might be doing and in the summer I’m looking to do a new album with Cliff Richard. I’ve been having a quiet year this year, jumped off the bandwagon for a bit, smelled the roses and next year is looking to be quite busy.

Can you tell us a bit about the concert series and what Christchurch audiences can look forward to? It’s a concert series that will be celebrating song writers that I love and people I grew up listening to, such as Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Carly Simon. It’s really celebrating their music and a bit of a soundtrack of all our lives really, from the late 60s to 70s. It’s a show that has something for everybody.

Sophie Pascoe has taken adversity and turned it to gold. We catch up with the inspiring Canterbury medallist about ﬁnding your ‘why’ and making history.

You received an MBE when you were just 15 and continue to kick goals. How does it feel to be part of the history books as one of the country’s most successful women? It’s humbling to be one of the country’s most successful women, by doing something I love every single day. I love what I do; I love the challenge and the thrill. To see me as one of the best in the country alongside some of the most

incredible women; my disability hasn’t defined that. I’ve gone and done that myself. When you’re young and have a goal to be the best in the world, you never really intend to create history with that. Now I want to be a successful female and leave a legacy, so others can see that if you put the hard work in, you can achieve.

Being a high achieving sportsperson not only requires the ability to push yourself physically, but also mentally. What has it taken to get where you are today? It’s taken so much more than just myself to get there. People might see just me, but man do I have a support team around me! There’s times I have to make – I don’t want to use the word ‘sacrifices’ – but there are decisions I have to make in order to make myself successful, even just whether to go out on a Friday or Saturday night, knowing how that’s going to impact the following day or week. As an athlete, you have to think how you can be better than the rest of your competitors and remember what your ‘why’ is. Every day you get up and tell yourself ‘why’ you are doing this. You have athletes that don’t make it and those who do; those who do are that special breed that questions themselves on every single move; they become perfectionists. It’s about routine but you’re still human, not a robot. There’s days you might fail, days you don’t ask why. You have to learn from that, come back the next day and do it better. You’ve been taking a break to recover from an operation on your leg, how does it feel to be back in the pool? A forced break is never treated as luxurious. It’s been challenging getting back in the pool. It’s been hard, it’s taxing on the body

and mind trying to get your body back to a high standard. I love being back though. I know what my ‘why’ is and I’m back with my support team. It’s great, but it has been challenging. It’s always hard to come back into it after a bit of time off, but that’s a great challenge in being able to see the rewards of the hard work pay off - hat’s what makes training enjoyable. How will the next two years look as you prepare for the world para-swimming championships in Kuching, Malaysia, next year and then Tokyo? The World Champs in August is my pinnacle event for next year. It’s also the stepping stone leading into Tokyo in many ways, not just in qualifying, but seeing who is new coming into the sport. When you are the ‘expected’, retaining that is bloody hard. There’s always going to be those hunting the expected but it’s about being prepared for the ‘expected’. The next two years will be full on, but exciting to know time is ticking down towards Tokyo. I’m really looking forward to it. How does a regular day in the life of Sophie Pascoe look? I train a couple of times a day, swim sessions that are two hours in the morning, an hour and a half in the afternoon. I have a gym session x3 during the week, along with prehab (a personalised maintenance programme for athletes to prevent injury) every morning. I get the recovery in there by having a nap every day - that’s vital for an athlete, not luxurious. There’s some yoga in there and recovery physio and massage during the week as well.. Why do you think you’ve been able to be such an incredible success? Again it comes back to the reason why. I have many whys – I love what I do, I love winning, I love making my parents proud and I love being something more than ‘the girl that’s missing a leg’. Those are pretty powerful impacts for the reason why I do this. Holding those close and making them work with my goal is what makes me successful. We learn from the times we fail and get back up. We, as a family, were struck with adversity at two and a half years of age. It’s about overcoming adversity and that’s how you find success.

You’re the proud winner of nine gold medals and six silvers across three Paralympic Games. What have been some of your most defining moments, not just as a sportswoman, but also as a person? So many accidents happen on a daily basis that change lives forever. This definitely changed my family’s and my own. Every time I go out and achieve and have my family, in particular my dad, who was part of my accident, in the stand, seeing this typical Kiwi bloke who doesn’t share a lot of emotion, shed a tear, that’s my defining moment. That two minutes up in the podium listening to the national anthem takes everyone back to the moment it started. I wouldn’t have had this life if it didn’t happen, but I don’t want to be defined by my disability.

Jody has already released three albums; next year she will release her fourth. Signed to Australian labels ABC Music and Universal Music, Jody spends much of her time between New Zealand and Australia. “I’ve come to think of it as one big country now. One night I might be performing in Christchurch, the next it will be Sydney. It gets hard sometimes, but I’ve got a great core band; we’re there for each other. I couldn’t do it without them.” When not writing, recording or on the road, Jody’s overseeing iHeartRadio Top Paddock Music Festival, a yearly New Year’s Eve event held at Wanaka’s Lake Hawea that was created by Jody. “Top Paddock gives me the chance to pay it forward to my artist friends by giving them a stage, a venue and a hugely appreciative audience.” Jody reflects on what would be the pinnacle of her career. “To have bigger shows and venues would be fantastic, and perhaps a collaboration with a pop group, because the lines between pop/rock/hip-hop and country are becoming increasingly blurred – Nelly and Tim McGraw’s Over and Over, for instance. I’d love to do something like that!” For a woman of such drive, passion and massive talent as Jody Direen, it can only be a matter of time.

randma was very musical. She’d bring her guitar whenever she came to visit; I’d try to wrap my hands around it to strum a few notes. She taught me my first song – Pistol Packin’ Mama. The sensation of being able to play guitar and sing at the same time was amazing! Hats off to Grandma – she was my inspiration.” When Jody was five, the family moved from Mosgiel to Wanaka; it’s still her base, but she’s seldom home for long periods of time. “Music’s been my fulltime career for around six years now. I’m very lucky to be making a living doing something I love.” Jody has travelled to Nashville to write and record her songs, and has also performed there. “Nashville’s considered the mecca of country music. There’s nothing like it, but it’s also extremely competitive. I remember going into this bar along Broadway, this woman was singing – an amazing voice… think Tina Turner on steroids – and she was singing for tips!” In 2014 Jody performed at Nashville’s Country Music Association Festival (CMA), in the Global Artists Showcase category. “The CMA Festival is one of the biggest country music festivals in the world; to be selected to perform there is the opportunity of a lifetime!”

Other favourite haunts include the Peruvian Pastuso, (particularly noteworthy for its fab spirits menu, drawn from all over the globe), and the South-East-Asian Red Spice Road with artfully presented fresh fare and mind-blowing taste hits. The conclusion? Any cuisine in the world can be found here, lovingly crafted; likewise any fashion. Alternatively, sit riverside on the South-Wharf boardwalk and do nothing. There’s no compunction to consume. Being somewhere different and just thinking is a re-boot too.

The State Library of Victoria seems enough proof that Melbourne has a silken lining of learning, heritage and high culture. It’s beautiful architecturally; the fourth most popular library in the world, according to the city’s official visitor guide. The La Trobe Reading Room has that hushed, grandiose feel you get from a mix of history, the patina of quality timber, big airspace and gracious balconies. Melbourne is a true meltingpot culture and notably one with incredible menus, globally sourced. I conducted a proper scientific straw poll, questioning two local dedicated gastronomic consumers on their favoured city establishments. Checking these out online showed a plethora of Trip-Advisor back-up and hearty recommendations. In a city this size, that equals booking weeks ahead. Editor Sarah Jarvis and journalist Tracey Edwardes to drive the news component for the app. “Everyone has a story to tell and we will be happy to tell that story,” Sarah says. “Let’s start focusing on what’s happening in our own backyard and give residents a domain to share their stories.” Sarah says as well as news stories, the Christchurch App will cover sport and events. “Our aim is to cover inspiring, informative and thought-provoking stories but to also inform our readers on things happening daily.” Non-profit organisations and community groups can also list their events for free.

“We understand non-profit and community groups don’t have the money to advertise so we are more than happy to support them with a free listing and story when needed,” Murray says. It sets out the history of the business, then examines the future, the business plan going forward and, “more importantly, the future opportunities for the business,” Sam says. “We aim to produce the best Information Memorandum you’ve ever seen and we can answer potential buyers’ questions, often without going back to the owner. Their role is to keep the business running smoothly, not to be concerned about the sale.” Discretion and confidentiality are key: potential buyers sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) for each business, rather than relying on a blanket NDA over a period of years. “Eighty percent of the businesses we sell are through our database and we regard that as our intellectual property,” Sam says. “We can sell a business before the whole world knows it is on the market, so privacy is protected for vendor and purchaser.” Sam and Damien will also meet off site and after hours to protect confidentiality. “It is part of what we do and who we are. We love helping people so we don’t mind it being a 24-hour service,” Damien says. “Our referrals come through satisfaction, our reputation is our hallmark, and we will only ever represent quality clients.” Metropol December 13, 2018 29

Christmas mince pies are a festive favourite for foodies. Why not add this to your silly season spread?

SMALL MINCE PIES

NZ Christmas mincemeat 175g raisins 150g sultanas 100g mixed peel 150g currants 30g blanched almonds 1 lemon, grated zest and juice 1 orange, grated zest and juice Quarter cup brandy Quarter cup sherry Half tsp allspice Half tsp ground cinnamon Half tsp ground ginger 75g butter 150g brown sugar 2 ripe bananas

ME THOD Place raisins, sultanas and peel in a processor and pulse well. Add to a large bowl with currants, almonds, zests and juices, brandy, sherry and spices. Melt the butter in a large frying pan over low heat and stir in brown sugar. Add sliced bananas to the butter and sugar, mashing them in well. Continue cooking until thick and smooth. Add to the remaining ingredients, stir well and cover. Leave at room temperature and stir again the following day, before placing in a covered plastic container in the fridge. Can be left up to several weeks to mature. Add to pastry parcels, decorate and bake accordingly.

Christmas Trifle INGREDIENTS It simply is not Christmas without a trifle; it makes such a great table centrepiece. The best thing is you can invent your own trifle layers using your favourite sponge or meringue – mix and match fruits, creams, jellies and inclusions – there really are no rules. This trifle is entirely made up of recipes from Chefs Host Christmas.

Just go for it! I’m using cherries here because they are AMAZING but use whatever you fancy as a fruity substitute.

The best part about this, apart from the taste, is that it can all be made in advance. Knock this out on Chrissy Eve and you’ll be winning.

ASSEMBLY TIME

25 minutes (plus overnight setting and 1-hour chilling on the day)

SERVES

500g cherries in vanilla syrup 500ml moscato jelly 720g white chocolate + vanilla cream, whipped 2 x chocolate brownie discs, 18cm diameter 75g dark chocolate, melted 360g custard 200g champagne sabayon

Fresh cherries Cherries in vanilla syrup, extra, drained Meringue dots Dark chocolate shards Edible gold leaf

For the trifle, you will need a 2.5 litre glass bowl with a diameter of 18–20 cm to fit all the layers.

Drain the cherries and reserve the syrup. Arrange the cherries in the bottom of the glass bowl. Slowly pour the melted jelly into the bowl to cover the cherries. Place the bowl in the fridge and leave to set overnight.

The next day, spoon half of the white chocolate and vanilla cream onto the jelly and spread it out to the edge of the bowl with a spoon. Drizzle half of the reserved cherry syrup over the top of the cream.

Place one of the chocolate brownie discs on top of the cream and push it gently into the cream layer to half submerge it. Spoon the remaining white chocolate and vanilla cream onto the chocolate sponge. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the top using a spoon.

Place the second chocolate brownie disc on top of the cream and again push it gently into the cream layer to half submerge. Spoon on the custard and spread it out to the edge of the bowl before drizzling the remaining cherry syrup over the top.

Spoon the champagne sabayon over the custard, to fill the glass bowl. Refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour to let everything settle and soak in.

Meanwhile, prepare the decorations for the trifle. Make the meringue dots and chocolate shards.

When you are ready to serve, remove the trifle from the fridge. Decorate with fresh cherries, drained cherries in syrup, meringue dots, chocolate shards and gold leaf.

hristmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a succulent ham on the bone and nobody knows the importance of tradition like Christchurch butcher and Peter Timbs Meats Ltd part owner Chris Timbs. Like his father Peter, grandfather and generations before, Chris discovered a love for butchery, passionately carrying on the family tradition. It’s a tradition which traces back to 1886 when Samuel Timbs first opened the doors to ‘Timbs and Son’ in Oxford, England, Chris says. “While some things have certainly changed over the past 130 years in the meat industry two things remain the same and that’s our uncompromising commitment for providing quality meat products and our friendly helpful service which is second to none.” For Chris, the quality of the product and

its presentation is paramount. “If it’s good, people will come back – and they do,” he says. Alongside their award-winning bacon and sausages, you’ll find an extensive range of salamis, chorizo, nuremburg sausages and deli goods. Orders are now being taken for Christmas hams. However, there are also plenty of other options for those wanting to have a less than traditional Christmas dinner, with quality Te Mana lamb legs, free range chicken, freedom farmed rolled pork loin and beef fillet steak. With plenty to choose from, you won’t be stuck for choice. METHOD: Stir together the marmalade, mustard, sugar and orange juice. Remove the skin, by gently cutting around the hock end and peeling back the skin. Try to keep all the fat on the ham. Place cloves in nice straight lines, and then score your ham around them, making diamond shapes. Apply the glaze. TO SERVE HOT: Pre-heat oven to 160°C, and start basting your ham every 20 minutes or so. At home, we like to heat the ham all the way through. Once we have the colour we want, we cover it in tinfoil and turn the oven down to 120°C. For a full ham (8-9kg), this will take about 2-2 1/2 hours. Remove, and serve hot! TO SERVE COLD: Follow glazing steps, as above, and remove once desired colour is achieved. Place in fridge. Be sure not to cross contaminate with fresh food. TIP: To give your ham that bright and colourful look, we decorate with pineapple pieces and glazed cherries.

That momentum carried us through the new year into opening our Queenstown site in April. Both sites are quite different, but it’s been an amazing year for us to test the model and watch the brand grow! Why do you think this Asian fusion offering is such a popular one in New Zealand? Kiwis love adventurous food experiences, which is what we always aim to provide with our restaurants. I think Asian fusion appeals to the masses because it’s the perfect mix of foreign components and westernised flavours – perfect for when you don’t know what you feel like! What do you think sets Hawker & Roll aside from the competition? Sustainability is ingrained into our business. Our customers are only ever given metal or paper straws, menus printed on recycled paper, biodegradable takeaway packaging sourced from Innocent Packaging, and paper or cardboard takeaway bags and boxes. We are also working in some sites with compostable options for food scraps and used napkins. What is the best compliment you have ever received? I can’t recall one in particular but it’s always good when someone lets you know, ‘you are doing a damn fine job!’ Goals for the future? Ciabatta can be fried up in quality olive oil with a little lemon, garlic or chilli seasoning to become the basis for a dipping-platter to accompany drinks. It’s a good idea to research which relishes and salad dressings are your favourites, then simply add sour cream and make dressing bowls to accompany freshly chopped vegetables. Good quality nuts, olives and cheeses, partially dried fruits, naan breads, guacamole, plus pastry nibbles from the supermarket’s freezers are all good investments for the outdoor entertaining season. Cream, full-fat yoghurt, sodas, tonics, limes, lemons and fresh herbs will all be useful when presenting platters and drinks. Creatively concoct mocktails using drink concentrates as the base flavour. If the colour’s gorgeous, all the better. Add napkins and jugs of iced water to your table, and voila!

Wild, wild greens The king of green goodness, kale, hands over the crown to leafy cousins of equal royalty. Dandelion leaves, mustard greens, chicory, chard, sorrel and nettle will adorn our plates. They’ve been around forever, it’s just taken time for our spinachand-lettuce tastebuds to embrace a quirkier bitterness.

Grains and seeds will sprout forth From hippie to hip, watch hemp’s popularity rise in 2019. As a high-quality, sustainable protein, it’s amazing in smoothies, great as a flour, and the seeds produce the healthiest oil. Freekeh is a super grain we’ll see more of. Made from green wheat, usually Durum, it can replace quinoa or brown rice.

Sharing the sumptuousness Sharing platters became a cool thing to do. Now it’s the thing to do. Food envy is passé. Palates can explore, chefs can showcase, and it’s great for group dining. It doesn’t matter if eyes are bigger than bellies, or if someone won’t eat their greens.

Fermented fixations As gut health becomes a focus, microbe-filled, probiotic, fermented food is fast becoming a staple. Tempeh joins tofu’s ranks as a diverse soy product that soaks up flavour, while kimchi and sauerkraut are capable of curing our tomato sauce addiction. Kefir and kombucha are exploding their fanbase - a delicious way to down your probiotics.

Fashionable fungi Canterbury has joined France as a truffle producer, and the taste is enticingly unexplainable. Although ‘black gold’, truffles are affordable in slivers. Infusing oils and dusting seasonings, they’re becoming another Kiwi delicacy. There is also an exotic mushroom movement, as foraging local goes mainstream.

Colour craze It’s healthy to eat from the rainbow, but there’s another reason for the increasing colour on our plates, as tropical fruits to edible flowers become vogue – a sausage stew just won’t get the likes on Instagram!

Hanmer’s new lease on life Hanmer Springs is Canterbury’s recreational heart, with the natural hot springs to which this tantalising township owes its name offering a respite for bustling city dwellers

ow it’s set to get bigger and better than ever before, with plans for five new thermal pools and a new aquatic thrill ride. General Manager Graeme Abbot says construction on the $4.3 million development will begin in April 2019 and be completed in late 2019. The five new pools will sit among river boulder terraces and native gardens on what is currently a grassed area next to the Rainbow Pools. A lot of time and effort has gone into ensuring plans for the new development are environmentally sustainable. The new 13.5 metre high slide will attach to the complex’s existing hydroslide tower and sit next to the SuperBowl, where the complex’s AquaPlay area currently is.

“Riders will shoot down a winding hydroslide in two-person tubes, before going down a steep drop that propels them up a nearvertical wall for a moment of weightlessness before zooming back down and onto the slide’s finish,” Graeme says. The pools’ have lodged a resource consent application for the development with the Hurunui District Council, this will be a publicly notified process so people can make submissions on the application. “Those we have spoken to thus far are incredibly excited about this development’s potential to make Hanmer Springs even more popular with visitors and boost local businesses.”

As a person who sets high (at times ridiculously high) standards, it’s often a relief to get to the end of the year – and this year especially. Along with everyone else, whether working at a breakneck pace or to a simpler rhythm, I ﬁnd it a good time to reﬂect on the events of the previous twelve months. The businessperson in me looks to analyse and assess. To attempt to repeat the successes and minimize the falls in the year that’s been and, of course, there have been both. Achieving the highest performing office internationally for the Harcourts brand has been the biggest accolade. It’s seen the Papanui office placed as the number-

one office out of over 900 in 10 countries. Undoubtedly a proud moment, but there have also been the usual conflicts that come with running a successful business whilst managing the various agendas of over 120 people across five offices. It’s also been a year where law changes around Overseas Investment and AntiMoney Laundering have required a new level of compliance and vigilance. 2019 will no doubt see even more training and specialist assistance to ensure the highest levels of professional care are maintained in these very new areas. Personally, the mother in me is adjusting to the new dimension of having two sons mostly living away from home and another Christmas (the seventh) without our eldest son Harry, who will be working in the Japanese Alps. Like every parent, these moments make me thoughtful and

nostalgic, and probably contribute to the rationale for always having an open house on Christmas Day. We’re a ‘more the merrier’ kind of family and our day is complete with our own quirky traditions and enough food and drink to feed a small army. So, it’s been a great year, a changing market and a changing environment. Adjusting to new price points in different demographics whilst instigating additional support services for the company. The appointment of a full-time social media designer has opened-up a whole new methodology for connecting with potential clients and purchasers, and the year ahead sees us adding to this part of the business. Giving back has also been a constant theme, and children and the vulnerable are the first on our list. So, what will 2019 look like? Like other years, it will probably have its share of challenge and cheer. I’m hoping it means lots of good madness, a caring community, lots of opportunity and more time with the people I love. e’re heading quickly into the time of the year when we start making a raft of resolutions that we vow to keep, with whole of life improvement at their very heart. And, despite the fact that few of these goals make it beyond mid-year, their setting maintains its place in our New Year traditions. Despite the questionable nature of their attainment, at the heart of these annual goals is a desire for self-improvement. While our highest aspirations for ourselves often conflict with our daily desires, resolutions are designed to give our aspirations the upper hand. About 6,000 people currently live in Christchurch’s inner city; a third less than pre-quake. We have been warned we must speed up central city growth if new enterprises are to survive. The CBD has seen a lot of retail, office and civic developments, but the missing ingredient is people.

believe it’s critically important for the future of the city to have a strong residential component. You need a night-time economy to add to the daytime economy. So I totally endorse the Christchurch City Council’s recently announced three-year plan aimed at

accelerating the inner city population, named Project 8011 after the central city postcode and the estimated number of homes needed for 20,000 people. Incentives in the plan range from working with developers to provide subsidies around the consenting and building

fees charged by the council, to low equity loans, rebates on development contributions and investment from the NZ Super Fund, as well as introducing rating and other financial incentives to encourage people to buy. Its geographical focus is the central city as defined in the Christchurch District Plan – known as the ‘Four Avenues’. I am already seeing keen interest from buyers in apartments, town houses and homes in the specified area; the SOHO Apartments at 118 Salisbury St where prepaid rates and pre-paid body corp fees for up to three years are part of the incentive to purchase, are 60 percent pre-sold. t this time of the year, it’s important that we also help those less fortunate. Not-for-profits are a vital thread in the social fabric of our community. However, they are also often the organisations that are the humblest – the ones that fly under the radar, whispering their success stories, when they have every reason to shout them from the rooftop. That’s why I was so pleased to see the Christchurch City Mission win the Champion Canterbury Community Impact Award for the medium/large enterprise category, and why I am so happy to lend my voice to raise awareness of their Back to School programme. The Christchurch City Mission has seen year-on-year demand increases for their support, which is compounded at this time of the year with Christmas and the significant financial outlay for families at the start of the school year. To help ease this pressure, the Christchurch City Mission offers practical assistance through the purchasing of school related items, such as uniforms, shoes, stationery and other curricular material. In 2012, the cost to deliver this initiative was almost $86,000, which supported 140 people. By 2017, that cost had jumped to over $274,000, supporting 470 people. This increase in demand shows the significant need in our community for this support. So, this summer, we encourage you to show your support – whether it’s through volunteering, donations or funding. The Christchurch City Mission measures success not solely by the statistics, but by the connections made and the self-worth restored to someone’s life, and that’s more than worthy of our support.

t was exciting to see in November that drilling is now underway at the Canterbury Arena site as part of early work to fast-track the project. Geotechnical investigations began in mid-November to determine the condition of the land as part of the Investment Case being prepared for the Arena. In total, 81 separate tests will be undertaken to give detailed information across the entire site. The information will allow the Investment Case to consider the most favourable areas for construction, assess options for the arena layout, develop conceptual designs for the form of the arena and its foundations, and evaluate any uncertainties related to the ground conditions. Early work will ensure we have the best information right from the start to feedin to the design process. We know that similar ground conditions exist across the city, from other work already underway. These tests will help fill in the gaps and provide robust information for the planning process. We’ll be discussing the findings of this early work as part of ongoing workshops and forums with key community and interest groups to ensure we get an arena that meets the needs of our region. This fulfils our promise to get the project moving and to speed up the recovery in the central city. The message we received from people who attended our arena workshop in October was to get started. We heard this call, which is why we’re cracking on with the work needed to get the site ready and get the Investment Case fit for purpose.

ne of the great challenges facing people in education, be it schools, universities or other tertiary organisations, is the impact and influence of ‘new’ technologies that are really questioning the validity of ‘old’ knowledge. The world is changing more quickly than in previous generations because of the digital revolution, and educators are challenged by the ‘relevance’ question more seriously now than ever before. Can we just keep doing what we have been or do we need to fundamentally do something different? When ‘answers’ can be found at the click of a button, perhaps education needs to be more about the question? Where does the balance lie between the ‘academic’ skills of the past and the ‘soft’ skills of the future? For us at Christ’s College, we’ve had a hugely successful year in terms of academic achievements. But our measure of success is equally about our graduate character, in particular, exhibiting what we call our graduate outcome. These are dispositions and attitudes that include compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, and enterprise and curiosity; all linked to our Christian virtues. The mystery of faith fundamentally speaks to the need to be curious. As Dr Stephen Hawking said: “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious and, however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t give up. Unleash your imagination. Shape the future.”

t’s hard to believe that it is Christmas time and as always, I realise that the year has once again flown past. I always look forward to Christmas because it is a time when we can spend more time with our friends and family. As a business owner, it is also a good time to step back and to reflect on the business year, in particular to revisit the goals that we set ourselves at the beginning of the year. It is easy, when we are busy, to fall into the trap of working in the business rather than working on the business. Having a break gives us the opportunity to step back from the business and to have a critical look at it. This coming year is shaping to be another busy one for Fraser Thomas Ltd. We are moving into our new offices, which will be more suitable for our expanding workforce. We are working with some inspirational clients, who are challenging our engineering ingenuity and will ensure that we are exposed to some exciting engineering challenges next year. That being said, next year my goal is to try and make more time in my busy schedule, to ensure that I have more time for my wife and kids and also for myself. Success in business typically takes a lot of time and effort, but we also need to try and prioritise working on ourselves, in order to enable us to maintain our health and focus (which ultimately will help to improve our businesses).

s we head into Christmas let me give you a few numbers on Ōtākaro’s projects that help illustrate how far we have come in Christchurch’s regeneration this year – 29,000 plants and 600,000 thousand pavers make up the City Promenade that now lines the Avon River; 97,000 hours went into repairing, widening and reprioritising Manchester Street for buses; 15,000 cubic metres of concrete and 1,450 tonnes of steel are taking shape as Te Pae, the city’s new convention centre, which is now 25 percent complete. A more significant measure of progress may be considering the spaces we can once again use. In February the former site of the CTV building was reopened as a green space for peaceful reflection, as desired by the affected families. Victoria Square emerged from a 13-month restoration in March and the determination to retain its iconic character has recently been recognised with a Civic Trust award. The Bowker Fountain is back to its fully illuminated former glory, and the paths levelled and widened to make the area safer, more accessible and ready for the likes of Carols by Candlelight. In October we opened the fourth and final gathering space in the South Frame Kahikatea Common - complete with native plants, seating and the central city’s first butterfly enclosure. It feels like a year that has gone faster than Santa down a chimney and I hope you have noticed the changes. All the best for the holiday season and I look forward to updating you on what lies ahead for Ōtākaro in the New Year.

ince 2011, plenty has been said about the opportunity Christchurch has to redefine itself. But, as in most cities, conversations about vision can sometimes be overtaken by more vocal demands for immediate action and visible progress. As we near the end of 2018, a year in which there have been significant visible signs of progress, the focus must continue to shift from recovery to the longer-term, ongoing and more complex process of regeneration. While individual agencies deliver value through their individual work programmes, it is the outcomes from the collective regeneration initiatives of the wider public and private sectors that generate the most value. Two examples this year have been the completion and opening of Tūranga, the new central library, and the EntX cinema complex. In just a few months’ time, the Christchurch Town Hall will re-open and, this time next year, the opening of Te Pae (the new convention centre) will be months away. But it is also important to remember that regeneration is not about new buildings and facilities. Attracting more people to Christchurch as visitors and new residents must be one of the city’s core objectives. Unlike Auckland and Wellington, Christchurch has the capacity to grow without the space and infrastructure constraints the northern cities are currently grappling with. However, it will not be a case of ‘build it and they will come’. Christchurch must demonstrate how it is uniquely placed to support the country’s growth and its relevance to New Zealand’s future success. That will be a task for all of us in 2019.

Rising from the rubble

ased on interviews with those who lived and worked through the Canterbury earthquakes, Rising from the Rubble is co-authored by Dr Michael Ardagh and Dr Joanne Deely and published by Canterbury University Press. It gives a compelling account of staff working in the Canterbury health system who rallied to maintain and rebuild essential health services, ensuring continuity of care for the most vulnerable, as well as managing the significant increased demand for services to support the ongoing impact on the mental health and wellbeing of Cantabrians. Dr Ardagh says he and Dr Deely felt there was a lack of information about the enormous role played by people in health during and after the earthquakes and that it was vital to record the experiences of patients and staff. “We wanted to capture their stories in a book that would be accessible to the general public as well as to health staff.” Stories about the immediate disaster aftermath include accounts of emergency medical teams successfully managing a huge influx of patients, blood bank (transfusion services), staff maintaining uninterrupted services despite working intermittently by torchlight and also ankle-deep in water, and the maintenance and engineering staff striving to keep the hospital functioning despite the ravaged infrastructure. “Most people would have run for the hills rather than stay underneath a concrete building. It was typical that staff chose not to flee, but to fight – to stay at, or even return to, work.”

Huntsbury Heaven As a ﬁrst-time entrant, Trevor Hone Builders was the Mid and South Canterbury Region House of the Year New Home over $2 million winner, before making the list of the country’s top 100 home builds, as a national Reserve Gold ﬁnalist in the House of the Year Awards for 2018.

irector and Master Builder Trevor says the Huntsbury Hill house was a phenomenal building challenge, but one of the the best things about this intense build has been the interaction with the owners and their happiness with the finished product. Designed by Cymon Alfrey Architects, the house is a melange of angles and detailing, about as far from a box on a hill as you could imagine. As with every project, Trevor was “passionate about realising the architect’s vision: if you’re not passionate you can’t do it. The complex architecture and engineering details have to be absorbed, understood, questioned and implemented”. Engineered to the latest requirements the house has a reinforced concrete

spine. The tricky steep, all-rock hill site has a foundation that has multiple layers, cut into the rock. The tiered retaining landscape walls form part of the foundations too. The roof is clad with Coloursteel tray roofing and a Viking Enviroclad roof garden, while the wall cladding is a combination of pitched Basalt stone, Alucabond, Cedar and tiles. The interior of the three-bedroom home again utilises the Basalt Stone, with floors tiled and carpeted. The striking Mondrian style front door gives way to the artgallery feel of the entrance hall that is tiled on both walls and floor. North facing decking runs the length of the upper and lower levels, with glass balustrading to ensure uninterrupted views. The curved spine of the house, clad

in pitched Basalt, which forms the main structure, runs externally and through the house, creating a spectacular feature. Trevor says this is one of the standout builds of his 20-year career for the level of technical difficulty and the stunning end result. Advanced Ground Engineering Solutions from Mainmark Help Remediate Upmarket Apartment Complex

amahi Apartments is a striking eight storey residential apartment building located in Merivale. The apartment building was recently given a new lease of life by Bruce McDonald who undertook an impressive renovation project to create a building with unique street appeal that really makes the property stand out. When Bruce, the Director of KCRB Ltd, purchased the Kamahi Apartments, he understood that the building would need extensive remediation work to ensure it would meet the required New Building Standard (NBS). Since the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, widespread liquefaction has affected countless building foundations across Christchurch, and the NBS was introduced in 2017 to ensure the seismic resilience of buildings, and future safety of occupants. In order to achieve the required NBS, the building’s structural foundations needed to be widened and strengthened. Bruce consulted with geotechnical engineers to analyse the integrity of the soil beneath the structure, then contacted Mainmark to assist with the important step of re-levelling the building. Mainmark is a leading ground engineering firm with a proven reputation backed by expertise, experience and demonstrated results.

The organisation has remediated hundreds of structures affected by seismic liquefaction including the 33,000-tonne Christchurch Art Gallery. After assessing the ground conditions and structural requirements of the Kamahi Apartments, Mainmark recommended their JOG ComputerControlled Grouting (known as JOG) as the most suitable solution for relevelling.

JOG is a highly advanced and extremely accurate method for raising foundations and can be precisely controlled to provide very small amounts of lift at a time. It works by stabilising the soil beneath the foundations and consolidating weak ground to deliver a highly accurate outcome, regardless of building size or complexity. Since Mainmark introduced the JOG technology to New Zealand, it has become a proven and safe method for treating buildings affected by seismic activity. The grout injections are non-invasive, and controlled using a central

computer to effectively and gently “float” the building back into position with finite control. This process allows the structure to be raised evenly with pinpoint accuracy, while avoiding undue stress on the building as it is re-levelled. The re-levelling project was completed using Mainmark’s proprietary Teretek® engineered resin, which was identified as an ideal solution to underseal the ground floor slab and foundations, for the required Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) Reinstatement. In a process that is likened to keyhole surgery, Teretek® is injected through carefully selected points. The resin quickly expands, immediately filling any voids. Like the JOG solution, this process is fast, clean and unobtrusive. Mainmark worked around the clock to complete works before Christmas 2017, successfully and efficiently re-levelling the building to within the required tolerances, and helping to achieve 100% NBS . “Nothing was a problem for Mainmark. They were incredibly cooperative and worked at a great pace, including one 7-day week, to get the project finished by 22nd December. This enabled KCRB Ltd to do crucial work over the Christmas period and stay on schedule to complete the project in 2018,” said Bruce.
