“One would give generous alms if one had the eyes to see the beauty of a cupped receiving hand” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I

t seems despite the years disappearing before our very eyes, what has endured the passing of time is the sense of anticipation for the annual pilgrimage to St Nick. In fact, my own eager excitement ahead of the forthcoming silly season has further strengthened over time. For me personally, this has been more evident since having children. There’s something pretty special about seeing their faces light up with delight, and not just when it comes to opening up presents! Children derive so much joy from the act of giving. Gift giving is a custom that can be found in all cultures and evidence of its existence dates back to prehistoric cultures; the symbolic giving and receiving of gifts being the social glue that makes possible the friendships, loyalties, alliances and coalitions upon which all human social organisations, ultimately rest. Let us not forget however, the true beauty of Christmas – the reunification of scattered family and friends, the additional time to do so with annual work breaks, ABCthe AUDITED opportunity to provide a physical imitation of one’s love and also a reminder of the importance of all of the above. After all, according to Peg Bracken, “Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas”. On behalf of the entire team at Metropol, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and AUDITED a happy New Year. Metropol will be back with you on 17 January, ready to embrace all of the wonders that await in 2019.

Queen of

Musical Theatre By Melinda Collins

Elaine Paige, the queen of musical theatre, is heading to our southern city with a show at Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal on Monday 21 January.

T

he English singer and actress has built a stellar career, with some laudable performances, including the role of Eva Perón in the first

6 December 13, 2018 Metropol

production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita in 1978, which made her a household name. We caught up with Elaine to discuss her illustrious career.

What attracted you to singing and performing? Academically I was not that interested; I was always much more about the vocational things in life. Singing was something I knew I loved; I was in the school choir, did the end of school productions. Dad asked me if I would like to go to drama school. I’m always grateful he made that suggestion. I’m not altogether sure I would have come to that myself. From a middle class family, we knew nothing about drama schools or anything of that ilk. Pretending to be someone else appealed to me, so I went to drama school and that’s how it all began. What are some of your career highlights? Evita will be one of the major highlights. Having the opportunity to originate the role of Eva Peron gave me a career in musical theatre, so that will always be the one that

is most special to me. I was able to pick and choose after Evita what roles I wanted to play. I was very fortunate to find myself in a very privileged position that gave me a career and choice. You’ve performed at some of the biggest venues around the world, what are you looking forward to about performing in New Zealand? I’ve come ‘Down Under’ to New Zealand and Australia several times during my career, although I haven’t been your way in half a dozen years. So I’m really looking forward to visiting and seeing the changes. Equally it’s like coming home really because New Zealand is so similar to England. That’s what I like about it. People are always very welcoming and in the past have come out to see me, so I’m hoping I can enjoy the same this time around. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? I’ve always worked very hard, many hours, done many different things. Next year I’m coming to see you in January, then when I come back to England there’s some television on the cards, a play I might be doing and in the summer I’m looking to do a new album with Cliff Richard. I’ve been having a quiet year this year, jumped off the bandwagon for a bit, smelled the roses and next year is looking to be quite busy.

Can you tell us a bit about the concert series and what Christchurch audiences can look forward to? It’s a concert series that will be celebrating song writers that I love and people I grew up listening to, such as Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Carly Simon. It’s really celebrating their music and a bit of a soundtrack of all our lives really, from the late 60s to 70s. It’s a show that has something for everybody.

Canterbury’s

Golden Girl By Melinda Collins

Sophie Pascoe has taken adversity and turned it to gold. We catch up with the inspiring Canterbury medallist about finding your ‘why’ and making history.

You received an MBE when you were just 15 and continue to kick goals. How does it feel to be part of the history books as one of the country’s most successful women? It’s humbling to be one of the country’s most successful women, by doing something I love every single day. I love what I do; I love the challenge and the thrill. To see me as one of the best in the country alongside some of the most

incredible women; my disability hasn’t defined that. I’ve gone and done that myself. When you’re young and have a goal to be the best in the world, you never really intend to create history with that. Now I want to be a successful female and leave a legacy, so others can see that if you put the hard work in, you can achieve.

Being a high achieving sportsperson not only requires the ability to push yourself physically, but also mentally. What has it taken to get where you are today? It’s taken so much more than just myself to get there. People might see just me, but man do I have a support team around me! There’s times I have to make – I don’t want to use the word ‘sacrifices’ – but there are decisions I have to make in order to make myself successful, even just whether to go out on a Friday or Saturday night, knowing how that’s going to impact the following day or week. As an athlete, you have to think how you can be better than the rest of your competitors and remember what your ‘why’ is. Every day you get up and tell yourself ‘why’ you are doing this. You have athletes that don’t make it and those who do; those who do are that special breed that questions themselves on every single move; they become perfectionists. It’s about routine but you’re still human, not a robot. There’s days you might fail, days you don’t ask why. You have to learn from that, come back the next day and do it better. You’ve been taking a break to recover from an operation on your leg, how does it feel to be back in the pool? A forced break is never treated as luxurious. It’s been challenging getting back in the pool. It’s been hard, it’s taxing on the body

and mind trying to get your body back to a high standard. I love being back though. I know what my ‘why’ is and I’m back with my support team. It’s great, but it has been challenging. It’s always hard to come back into it after a bit of time off, but that’s a great challenge in being able to see the rewards of the hard work pay off - hat’s what makes training enjoyable. How will the next two years look as you prepare for the world para-swimming championships in Kuching, Malaysia, next year and then Tokyo? The World Champs in August is my pinnacle event for next year. It’s also the stepping stone leading into Tokyo in many ways, not just in qualifying, but seeing who is new coming into the sport. When you are the ‘expected’, retaining that is bloody hard. There’s always going to be those hunting the expected but it’s about being prepared for the ‘expected’. The next two years will be full on, but exciting to know time is ticking down towards Tokyo. I’m really looking forward to it. How does a regular day in the life of Sophie Pascoe look? I train a couple of times a day, swim sessions that are two hours in the morning, an hour and a half in the afternoon. I have a gym session x3 during the week, along with prehab (a personalised maintenance programme for athletes to prevent injury) every morning. I get the recovery in there by having a nap every day - that’s vital for an athlete, not luxurious. There’s some yoga in there and recovery physio and massage during the week as well.. Why do you think you’ve been able to be such an incredible success? Again it comes back to the reason why. I have many whys – I love what I do, I love winning, I love making my parents proud and I love being something more than ‘the girl that’s missing a leg’. Those are pretty powerful impacts for the reason why I do this. Holding those close and making them work with my goal is what makes me successful. We learn from the times we fail and get back up. We, as a family, were struck with adversity at two and a half years of age. It’s about overcoming adversity and that’s how you find success.

You’re the proud winner of nine gold medals and six silvers across three Paralympic Games. What have been some of your most defining moments, not just as a sportswoman, but also as a person? So many accidents happen on a daily basis that change lives forever. This definitely changed my family’s and my own. Every time I go out and achieve and have my family, in particular my dad, who was part of my accident, in the stand, seeing this typical Kiwi bloke who doesn’t share a lot of emotion, shed a tear, that’s my defining moment. That two minutes up in the podium listening to the national anthem takes everyone back to the moment it started. I wouldn’t have had this life if it didn’t happen, but I don’t want to be defined by my disability.

Jody has already released three albums; next year she will release her fourth. Signed to Australian labels ABC Music and Universal Music, Jody spends much of her time between New Zealand and Australia. “I’ve come to think of it as one big country now. One night I might be performing in Christchurch, the next it will be Sydney. It gets hard sometimes, but I’ve got a great core band; we’re there for each other. I couldn’t do it without them.” When not writing, recording or on the road, Jody’s overseeing iHeartRadio Top Paddock Music Festival, a yearly New Year’s Eve event held at Wanaka’s Lake Hawea that was created by Jody. “Top Paddock gives me the chance to pay it forward to my artist friends by giving them a stage, a venue and a hugely appreciative audience.” Jody reflects on what would be the pinnacle of her career. “To have bigger shows and venues would be fantastic, and perhaps a collaboration with a pop group, because the lines between pop/rock/hip-hop and country are becoming increasingly blurred – Nelly and Tim McGraw’s Over and Over, for instance. I’d love to do something like that!” For a woman of such drive, passion and massive talent as Jody Direen, it can only be a matter of time.

“G

randma was very musical. She’d bring her guitar whenever she came to visit; I’d try to wrap my hands around it to strum a few notes. She taught me my first song – Pistol Packin’ Mama. The sensation of being able to play guitar and sing at the same time was amazing! Hats off to Grandma – she was my inspiration.” When Jody was five, the family moved from Mosgiel to Wanaka; it’s still her base, but she’s seldom home for long periods of time. “Music’s been my fulltime career for around six years now. I’m very lucky to be making a living doing something I love.” Jody has travelled to Nashville to write and record her songs, and has also performed there. “Nashville’s considered the mecca of country music. There’s nothing like it, but it’s also extremely competitive. I remember going into this bar along Broadway, this woman was singing – an amazing voice… think Tina Turner on steroids – and she was singing for tips!” In 2014 Jody performed at Nashville’s Country Music Association Festival (CMA), in the Global Artists Showcase category. “The CMA Festival is one of the biggest country music festivals in the world; to be selected to perform there is the opportunity of a lifetime!”

Hitting the town

Reminiscing after a trip to America, Caroline and Murray Ireland realised one of the most enjoyable aspects of their holidays abroad was meeting the locals, who provided a more personable city tour. “They were run by friendly, engaging personalities, who made it really fun and memorable – so we decided we could do the same here in Christchurch,” says Caroline.

T

he well-travelled Cantabrian couple established Caroline’s Kombi tours, providing a unique way for visitors to explore Christchurch, while showcasing and supporting local businesses. “There is so much to offer in the city now and many exciting opportunities to come with the rebuild – we’re not focusing on the earthquakes. It’s also a chance to include Christchurch’s heritage, combined with quirky history facts, Kiwi culture, and a lot of fun.” Murray is the tour guide, while Caroline drives the cute mint-and-white Kombi vans, Judy and Moira – which seat six people each, for an even more personable tour. “The vans are named after my mother and aunt, who both had a great passion for life,” Caroline says. “And the iconic Kombi van represents adventure and brings back many happy summer holiday memories for us – people connect with them worldwide.” The vans have been meticulously worked on by local VW specialists, Mark and Tony

from The Metric Nut, to ensure they are of the highest standard for comfort, quality and safety. Caroline’s Kombi tours include the CBD Tour, featuring a must-see list of attractions such as the Christchurch Art Gallery, Kate Sheppard Memorial, Rutherford’s Den, Scape Public Art, Solidarity Grid, Bridge of Remembrance and the Cardboard Cathedral, as well as showcasing the city’s renowned street art, before heading to Cashmere hills for stunning views of the Southern Alps. During the summer, the guided tours will extend to Governors Bay to visit the garden of international significance, Ohinetahi, as well as other sights outside the CBD. Food tours, Super Senior tours and tailored tours for special events or corporate outings are also available – whether groups of friends or colleagues want to visit Diamond Harbour, Sumner Beach, or Lyttleton. Urban therapy:

It’s the holiday time of year. Liesl Johnstone looks at why Melbourne is hot property for your travel itinerary.

A

lmost-summer is as good a time as any for some Aussie urbanity; some Melbourne time. Wake up here, and things could definitely be worse. Straight from New Zealand, there are a couple of extra hours before the alarm, for starters. It’s becoming a repeatable luxury that I would highly recommend…. to station myself in the midst of a bustling city a

few levels up off the street (for views and interest, allowing reasonable airspace from traffic sirens) to observe life, think, walk, read, eat and drink, then sleep and repeat. Did I mention the shopping? As someone whose cultural norm was unfailingly to ‘get away from it all’ beside the sea or into the mountains whenever possible, city breaks are a new burst of neon. Occasionally there’s something

strangely comforting about being in the midst of a large bustling population. Ditto, to walk down the street at night surrounded by teeming humanity; many pedestrians; copious night-cyclists. Parts of Melbourne’s CBD (and Sydney’s) are not dissimilar to Paris, or any city of millions. The trees and old architecture lend beauty and respectability; the street art and talented (auditioned) buskers

kefta, Persian cherries, smoked almonds... plus a truly global range of craft beers and inventive, otherworldly cocktails. Other well-patronised, gloriously centrally-located eateries included Sezar, an Armenian establishment with a geographically extensive winelist; Tonka, with its ‘clean, punchy flavours’ of modern India, and Taxi Kitchen with its fabulously brash marketing (announcing unequivocally that you’ve arrived) and its inventive Aussie-Asian-fusion menu. The latter is perfect for savouring local fish, meat and a flavour-kaleidoscope of dumplings. Other favourite haunts include the Peruvian Pastuso, (particularly noteworthy for its fab spirits menu, drawn from all over the globe), and the South-East-Asian Red Spice Road with artfully presented fresh fare and mind-blowing taste hits. The conclusion? Any cuisine in the world can be found here, lovingly crafted; likewise any fashion. Alternatively, sit riverside on the South-Wharf boardwalk and do nothing. There’s no compunction to consume. Being somewhere different and just thinking is a re-boot too.

proffer whimsy and edginess. Trams are yet another reason to love it here, giving so many such ease of access; a domino to the city’s vibrancy. The State Library of Victoria seems enough proof that Melbourne has a silken lining of learning, heritage and high culture. It’s beautiful architecturally; the fourth most popular library in the world, according to the city’s official visitor guide. The La Trobe Reading Room has that hushed, grandiose feel you get from a mix of history, the patina of quality timber, big airspace and gracious balconies. Melbourne is a true meltingpot culture and notably one with incredible menus, globally sourced. I conducted a proper scientific straw poll, questioning two local dedicated gastronomic consumers on their favoured city establishments. Checking these out online showed a plethora of Trip-Advisor back-up and hearty recommendations. In a city this size, that equals booking weeks ahead. If a weekend ‘Spice Journey’ appeals, try booking at Maha, which bills itself as an ‘unrestricted Middle Eastern’ eatery. Duck-fat hummus, preserved lemon, charred chicken

ALI HARPER WILL BE JOINING TIM BEVERIDGE AS PART OF HIS ACCLAIMED THE MUSIC IS BOND SHOW

can’t say that I’m not excited by what will be my first visit for a function. Tim Beveridge is bringing his acclaimed The Music is Bond to the Christchurch Town Hall on 16 March. The sexiness and fun of 50 years of James Bond comes to life in an exceptional show featuring the best in musical talent from Canterbury with a superb cast including Jackie Clarke, Ali Harper, Caitlin Smith and backed by the magnificent sound of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Tim says, “I am very excited to be returning to the Christchurch Town Hall. It’s probably going to be a bit emotional to be back there after having had so many wonderful experiences

performing there with the CSO”. “I also first met my wife there!” I stood amazed the last time I saw Tim belt out a stunning rendition of Tom Jones’ Thunder ball and every piece is stunningly crafted by the Christchurch symphony Orchestra to perfection. Yes, it’s true I’m a BIG James Bond fan but the music here is timeless. With the talented performers debuting this music in Christchurch’s stunning new performance venue there’s no better excuse to come and check out what the new Town Hall has to offer. Book early at www.ticketek. co.nz and have a few martinis, shaken not stirred, before you go.

etropol Magazine Publisher Murray Dempsey is the driving force behind the Christchurch App and is thrilled to be sharing his passion for hyper-local news. “There’s been a move away from community news reporting here in Canterbury and we believe there is a need for a news site focused on delivering relevant local news and events,” he says. “It’s easy to forget what is going on in our local communities with so much attention being focused on what’s happening at a national and international level.” Murray has employed former Fairfax

Editor Sarah Jarvis and journalist Tracey Edwardes to drive the news component for the app. “Everyone has a story to tell and we will be happy to tell that story,” Sarah says. “Let’s start focusing on what’s happening in our own backyard and give residents a domain to share their stories.” Sarah says as well as news stories, the Christchurch App will cover sport and events. “Our aim is to cover inspiring, informative and thought-provoking stories but to also inform our readers on things happening daily.” Non-profit organisations and community groups can also list their events for free.

“We understand non-profit and community groups don’t have the money to advertise so we are more than happy to support them with a free listing and story when needed,” Murray says. As well as information on local events, there will be a detailed business and trade directory. The Christchurch App is a free downloadable app available from the Apple App Store or Google Play. T Time Change? FOR A

If you’re a small business owner you’ll understand exactly where investor Mark Cuban is coming from in saying a successful business “is not in the dreaming, it’s in the doing”.

he business year is full of doing and doing, and doing some more; often a summer holiday is the only breather you get to sit back, pause and reflect on the bigger picture. Are you still passionate about your business? What do you want to be doing in two to five years? Is it time for a change? Tabak Business Sales understands that being in business has to be about more than just the bottom line and considering where the market is: it’s about passion and engagement; about being excited to get up in the morning to go to work. If your appetite for your enterprise has dulled a little recently, Damien Fahey and Sam Cherry, brokers at Tabak, are the people to see about the sale of your cherished business to a new and enthusiastic owner. Damien says their process is comprehensive. “We assess the value of your business, write up a clear and very inclusive Information Memorandum for potential buyers, take buyers into due diligence and make the sale, occasionally in just a matter of weeks – but more often it can take 2-3 months.” Tabak have statistics going back 15 years comparing assessed valuation with actual sale price, and are extremely proud that on average the sale price fell is within 5 percent of the valued price. “We always justify our valuations to the business owner by way of market and other data, and we never waste time bringing

unreasonably low offers to our owners,” Sam says. The Information Memorandum tells the fullest story possible. It sets out the history of the business, then examines the future, the business plan going forward and, “more importantly, the future opportunities for the business,” Sam says. “We aim to produce the best Information Memorandum you’ve ever seen and we can answer potential buyers’ questions, often without going back to the owner. Their role is to keep the business running smoothly, not to be concerned about the sale.” Discretion and confidentiality are key: potential buyers sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) for each business, rather than relying on a blanket NDA over a period of years. “Eighty percent of the businesses we sell are through our database and we regard that as our intellectual property,” Sam says. “We can sell a business before the whole world knows it is on the market, so privacy is protected for vendor and purchaser.” Sam and Damien will also meet off site and after hours to protect confidentiality. “It is part of what we do and who we are. We love helping people so we don’t mind it being a 24-hour service,” Damien says. “Our referrals come through satisfaction, our reputation is our hallmark, and we will only ever represent quality clients.” Metropol December 13, 2018 29

Business Excellence Recognised Coffee Worx recently won the North Canterbury Business Excellence Award for Hospitality and Tourism. Owners Deb and Ian Riach were thrilled to have their hard work, and that of their team, recognised with the judges describing their “good food, good coffee and a great business strategy” as impressive.

How to have P a happy holiday With the arrival of guests – expected and unexpected – at Christmas, and kids home from uni or overseas who always seem to be on the prowl for food, suddenly there’s no time for relaxation, because you’re too busy fretting about what to conjure up for the next meal.

he Canterbury-based coffee roastery produces premium blends, which have also won several coffee awards, for distribution and supply around the South Island. It partners with many businesses to help them make their coffee stand out from the crowd in the competitive hospitality industry. Deb and Ian are veterans in the dynamic coffee industry, and pride themselves on their long-term commitment to the Canterbury hospitality scene over the past 22 years. Their funky, retro industrial Coffee Worx Roastery Café in Rangiora is a very popular destination, and their stylish industrial espresso bar in Hayton Road serves top notch espresso and cabinet food weekdays. Deb and Ian have made it their mission to offer freshly roasted premium coffee and high quality made-on-site food, including their exclusive freshly baked, authentic bagels. They also sell their award-winning coffee in retail bags at both of their cafés, with the ability to fill your own containers and have coffee freshly ground to order, and will be adding coffee pods to their range by Christmas. If you have a coffee lover on your Christmas present list, then check them out, as they also have a range of coffee equipment for home use and gift vouchers. Visit www.coffeeworx.co.nz.

asta Vera at Unit 1, 2 Musgrove Place removes all that anxiety. Pop into the factory shop to stock up your fridge and freezer with fresh pasta, homestyle lasagne, and mouth-watering calzone and gnocchi. For barbecues their selection of pesto, sauces and hummus are delicious accompaniments. So now you’ve got the long-term sorted, what are you going to do about the

scary immediate and the fact your unpredictable teenagers have invited all their friends over for tea tonight? Not a problem, grab a tray of Baked Lasagne, a tray of Macaroni Cheese, and just to be on the safe side, add in some Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni (available in 10 x 140g servings) and those kids are fed. And because you’ll only have enough energy left to open a bottle of wine, the re-heat and serve Chili Con Carne has your name on it. For those with special dietary requirements there is a delectable range of gluten free lasagne and gnocchi; and for vegetarians, the vegan lasagne is scrumptious. With ample parking outside the factory shop, the holiday season is starting to look pretty good! hat trick By Tracey Edwardes

It’s great to see hats making a confident comeback. Once upon an era they were a mandatory item, while more recently just reserved for occasions, sun protection and bad hair days. No longer. The latest looks seen out and about are head-turning – beautiful in form and function.

F

abulous wide brim hats, shielding our precious complexions and shoulders, add balance to an outfit and silhouette. For everyday elegance, they are structured with florals, colour, neutrals and sashes, or are more nonchalant in summertime straw, floppy or fringed. Another brimmed beauty is the fedora, straight out of the movies, be it embellished cowgirl or gangster style, to black and white sophistication. Bucket-style hats are a surprising statement from the catwalk. There is 1920’s

style with vintage florals so flirty with sundresses - to gingham and cute prints in every imaginable material. A new-look beret for summer is of leather and perched slightly askew. Sun visors have been snatched back from the ’80s. From funky vinyl to slinky suede, they can be a dressy accessory. As sportswear merges with fashionwear, a designerlogo baseball cap easily partners a pair of heels. Hats of all shapes, attitudes and sartorial cloth entice everyone to don their most favourite.

Christmas Style By Tracey Edwardes

Decorating for Christmas doesn’t just have to be about adorning your home. We have some clever ways to bring Christmas into your wardrobe. Whether subtle or celebratory, taking the Christmas spirit to the streets will bring cheer to one and all.

M B.

etallics are this season’s fashion star. Harness this timely coincidence and exude celebration. Silvery blues, shimmery blush pinks, and lustrous lilacs are metallics at their most beautiful. Mimic decorative baubles and adorn in over-sized pearls. Put on a filigree snowflake pendant, crystal drop earrings, sparkly diamante hair slides, and a dress and heels in materials of ethereal fairy-like lustre. Certain colour combinations are Christmas on a candy stick. Go bold with gold against anything red, or pair shiny silver upon beautiful blue. Try ultra violet - this hot-right-now hue will fall in love with anything metallic. A white satin belt cinching the waist of

a white cotton shirt dress teams great with silver shoes. Last season’s star prints can even come out to shine. Pick out this season’s florals of rich red blooms and green foliage. Cute cherry patterns on everything is vogue right now in Europe, but ironically a bowl of juicy cherries epitomises Christmas day to us. It’s the same with pretty strawberry prints. Vintage pinup style dresses often sport Christmasy patterns or red Polka dots. Think red and white gingham or elf-green anything – just search amongst Santa’s colour wheel. Saying someone is dressed up like a Christmas tree is not normally a flattering compliment, but for the next few weeks, go for it – with bells on!

Sometimes bold accessories are what’s needed to give your wardrobe a seasonal pick me up.

A

ccessories are certainly getting braver. They can create a statement of personal style. Seize the opportunity to splash out on the vivid side of the colour wheel, even if you prefer plain fabric. Wear a mishmash of gemstones, something that shimmers or shouts from your wrist or your collar, or perhaps invest in a funky original piece from a local artist that’s a conversation starter. The little black handbag is temporarily overshadowed

A Commitment of Care

by colourful prints, metallic embellishments and floral features. Even with elegant blush pink, there’s most likely a glamourous adornment attached somewhere. Wide corset-style belts create hourglass silhouettes – perhaps contrast the colour for a fashionable impact. Hair is daring in dazzling diamantes, feathers and crystals for hair-slides and clips, on the catwalk this season. Knockout nails continue to bedazzle and statement scarves

www.jouvence.co.nz

are the go-to accessory. You might be feeling a little bored of your favourite summer dress. Just put on an outthere pendant in azure blue or molten metallic and voila, a fresh new outfit. Oversized earrings also glam up a look. Jewellery especially, exudes the effervescent part of ourselves. Demure or daring, it paints a 1. 2. 3. 4.

picture of how we are feeling. If you are off to a party, a standout geometric necklace, a multi-beaded choker, or a collection of beguiling bracelets, will get you in the festive summery mood. It’s the season of celebrations and frivolity, and absolutely nothing is going to look too loud or too lavish.

Have a Zero-waste Christmas

Finding that perfect gift and reducing your waste this silly season is easier than you think. Founder and CEO of The Rubbish Whisperer, Helen Townsend shares her favourite environmentally-friendly spoils ideal for under your Christmas tree this year.

1.

Waste-reducing household items One of the best gifts you can give friends or family is helping them on their waste-reducing journey. Reusable coffee cups, stainless steel straws, reusable produce bags and water bottles are all pretty sweet options – either individually as stocking fillers or bundled as a plastic-free lifestyle starter kit.

36 December 13, 2018 Metropol

2.

House plants Who doesn’t love a great plant? They have been proven to lift your mood, make your home more beautiful and the air cleaner. Share a plant you’ve grown and place it in a beautiful pot you’ve picked up at the second hand shop– or if you’re short on time, support your local nursery by buying one instead.

8.

9.

10

Homemade pampering products Creating a personalised lotion, candle, unpackaged soap or a set of bath bombs is a great spoil to give. Use scents you know they’ll love to make it special. Glass mason jars or homemade fabric bags are impactful ways to package the pampering products beautifully. Fun experiences Experience-based gifts are thoughtful ways to really show how much you care this Christmas. Think dance lessons, scuba diving for beginners, massage training, knitting classes or yearly passes to a local attraction. For kids, think of awesome annual memberships Unlimited visits to an aquarium or zoo is (almost) every child’s dream! Think about the child’s interests when selecting the perfect place to gift. If you’re buying for a niece/nephew or a friend’s child, this is the ‘extra’ expense parents will appreciate being covered as well. Reusable water balloons Keep the kids busy all day with reusable water balloons. They are a fantastic gift – especially for Christmas stockings. Simply dunk each reusable water balloon into a bucket of water and throw! You don’t need to pick up little bits of balloons at the end of the day. Plastic-free store vouchers Gift vouchers are still a firm favourite – opt for an electronic voucher code rather than a plastic card. Treat friends to a voucher from their favourite store or brand, and if you have tween or teen children, a gift voucher allows them to select exactly what they want. Donate to a charity on their behalf Make a monetary contribution to an initiative your family member or friend is passionate about or support a family in need with a food hamper on their behalf is a meaningful way to give. A stunning piece of clothing for the vintage lover We all have that friend who simply rocks statement vintage pieces. Shopping second hand is an ethical and sustainable way to buy clothing – it not only has no packaging, but also provides an opportunity for an item to have a second life. Wrap it well When it comes to wrapping your gift, forgo expensive printed wrapping paper and sticky tape and use reusable gift wrap instead. Get creative and reuse fabric or brown paper you have at home.

feel-good festive vibe. The team is offering a Christmas Massage Special – it is a delicious full 90 minutes of massage for the amazing price of $99 and includes a full body massage, a head and scalp massage, and foot reflexology massaging. While you are there, double down on your stress reduction by stocking up on Christmas gift vouchers for loved ones who have been especially good this year. The vouchers come in any value from $30 to $100, or can be gifted for a specific treatment. Beauty Progress is open over the holiday period, so visiting friends and family can use their voucher to come in and destress, or you can come in together and experience the relaxing bliss as a bonding exercise! The facials at Beauty Progress are something special. The team uses a product range exclusive to them in Christchurch. Ten years ago, Gernétic approached Owner and Skin Therapist Wendy Barker. “I proceeded to do in depth research on friends and family, and discovered the range to be the best I have used in 30 years of skin therapy,” Wendy says. “The range, which is French, was first developed to treat burns in Paris hospitals, so the products contain 50 to 80 percent active ingredients, as opposed to the 20 to 30 percent that you can buy over the counter.” The full and final answer to your festive prayers is received when you discover Beauty Progress is open seven days from 9am to 7pm and there is parking at the door. Canterbury Bride

Bridal Makeup Magic By Tracey Edwardes

Cameras, kisses, champagne, sunshine and tears of happiness – bridal makeup must last through it all.

A

bride’s beautiful face is by far the most unforgettable image of the big day. Weddings might have become a more casual affair for many, but makeup really needs to be perfectly faultless. With a pre-wedding ritual all of its own, it requires the calm creative touch of a professional, who will ensure stress lines don’t feature! There is much to ponder before picking out colours and products. The weather, the venue, skin type, the dress and, most vital of all, your unique personality. Thankfully, it’s a fanciful era of everything goes for wedding beauty. Nude shimmery lips or matte rose-red pouts, cat’s eyes or doe eyes, sun-kissed skin or a pale porcelain complexion. Choosing a makeup artist is like finding a bridesmaid, you’ll be on a personal journey together. A good consultant will ask you everything – as absolutely loving your look is number one. Browse Instagram,

42 December 13, 2018 Metropol

Pinterest and magazines until you spot that certain image you adore and aspire to. This guarantees you’re both on the same page. An invaluable trial makeup session is now the thing to do. This ensures you’re feeling comfortable, have made the right choices, your skin won’t react, and you can test out how the products last on your skin. You can buy the lippy for touch ups on the day, or the consultant often has sample sizes. Don’t do anything drastic or dramatic to your eyebrows near the time that you haven’t tried before. The makeup artist can create them with gels, pencils, or powder on the day. However, microblading is a refined process in stages, with a flattering outcome such as beautifully arched brows akin to Audrey Hepburn. The timelessly feminine winged flick on the eyelids is a photogenic look this lady also rocked so well. Specialist makeup brands, such as hypoallergenic Lauren & Louise Cosmetica,

ensures luminous photo-worthy effects. Primers for complexion and eyelids are so important for a long-lasting coverage that won’t melt away. Mineral powder and cream blushes appear softer and it’s a bridal trend to highlight the cheekbones. Careful makeup to the décolletage will limit any high-colour flushing and ensure this skin area matches your complexion. Shimmery shadows are so fine and delicate these days – any age can wear them. Pinky golds are a romantic choice, and the new emeralds and violets for shadows and liners emulate jewel-like fantasy. Gold is also staring, for all over goddess-like glamour. High definition cameras mean an overall softer makeup effect is essential, as deeper tones can be too harshly accentuated. The wedding makeup artist will work their technical magic so you and your bridesmaids look picture perfect both on and off camera.

She is talking about Via Sollertia’s own diamondshaped ring keeper necklace. The ring keeper necklace was forged by the desire of women who do physical work, or jobs requiring continuous handwashing, to keep their precious ring completely safe,

aster Stylist Vicki O’Fee, of V for Hair and Beauty upstairs in Merivale Mall, says women often start to grey by 35, or even earlier – and many are now loving the look and making the most of the change. It’s important to choose a shade that suits your skin. Sultry hues of silver, sand, dove, iris and lilac for hair can also be incredibly feminine and flattering.

yet still wear it. You can display the necklace and ring, or tuck it safely into your top. When your ring is nestling on your finger, the necklace stands alone as a fabulous piece. “We were challenged to design a product and it has become desirable in its own right,” she says. The ring keeper necklaces are bespoke to you, plus sizing and angles ensure your ring stays put. Doctor, drainlayer, dishwasher or busy mum, you need this clever little beauty.

Like any change in hair colour or style, it’s a transition, so planning ahead for special occasions is vital. Christmas Trifle INGREDIENTS It simply is not Christmas without a trifle; it makes such a great table centrepiece. The best thing is you can invent your own trifle layers using your favourite sponge or meringue – mix and match fruits, creams, jellies and inclusions – there really are no rules. This trifle is entirely made up of recipes from Chefs Host Christmas.

MARKE T

Just go for it! I’m using cherries here because they are AMAZING but use whatever you fancy as a fruity substitute.

INE CHRISTMAS TIMEL

The best part about this, apart from the taste, is that it can all be made in advance. Knock this out on Chrissy Eve and you’ll be winning.

ASSEMBLY TIME

25 minutes (plus overnight setting and 1-hour chilling on the day)

SERVES

12 16 TO DECORATE

500g cherries in vanilla syrup 500ml moscato jelly 720g white chocolate + vanilla cream, whipped 2 x chocolate brownie discs, 18cm diameter 75g dark chocolate, melted 360g custard 200g champagne sabayon

Fresh cherries Cherries in vanilla syrup, extra, drained Meringue dots Dark chocolate shards Edible gold leaf

1.

5.

For the trifle, you will need a 2.5 litre glass bowl with a diameter of 18–20 cm to fit all the layers.

2.

Drain the cherries and reserve the syrup. Arrange the cherries in the bottom of the glass bowl. Slowly pour the melted jelly into the bowl to cover the cherries. Place the bowl in the fridge and leave to set overnight.

3.

The next day, spoon half of the white chocolate and vanilla cream onto the jelly and spread it out to the edge of the bowl with a spoon. Drizzle half of the reserved cherry syrup over the top of the cream.

4.

Place one of the chocolate brownie discs on top of the cream and push it gently into the cream layer to half submerge it. Spoon the remaining white chocolate and vanilla cream onto the chocolate sponge. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the top using a spoon.

Place the second chocolate brownie disc on top of the cream and again push it gently into the cream layer to half submerge. Spoon on the custard and spread it out to the edge of the bowl before drizzling the remaining cherry syrup over the top.

6.

Spoon the champagne sabayon over the custard, to fill the glass bowl. Refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour to let everything settle and soak in.

7.

Meanwhile, prepare the decorations for the trifle. Make the meringue dots and chocolate shards.

8.

When you are ready to serve, remove the trifle from the fridge. Decorate with fresh cherries, drained cherries in syrup, meringue dots, chocolate shards and gold leaf.

AMAZING GLAZE Chris Timbs takes us through the process of glazing your Peter Timbs ham, using this easy and delicious marmalade glaze. For the glaze, you’ll need: 1 cup finely cut orange marmalade 3 Tbsp wholegrain mustard 3 Tbsp brown sugar 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

METROPOL ON A PLATE

Steeped in Tradition C

hristmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a succulent ham on the bone and nobody knows the importance of tradition like Christchurch butcher and Peter Timbs Meats Ltd part owner Chris Timbs. Like his father Peter, grandfather and generations before, Chris discovered a love for butchery, passionately carrying on the family tradition. It’s a tradition which traces back to 1886 when Samuel Timbs first opened the doors to ‘Timbs and Son’ in Oxford, England, Chris says. “While some things have certainly changed over the past 130 years in the meat industry two things remain the same and that’s our uncompromising commitment for providing quality meat products and our friendly helpful service which is second to none.” For Chris, the quality of the product and

its presentation is paramount. “If it’s good, people will come back – and they do,” he says. Alongside their award-winning bacon and sausages, you’ll find an extensive range of salamis, chorizo, nuremburg sausages and deli goods. Orders are now being taken for Christmas hams. However, there are also plenty of other options for those wanting to have a less than traditional Christmas dinner, with quality Te Mana lamb legs, free range chicken, freedom farmed rolled pork loin and beef fillet steak. With plenty to choose from, you won’t be stuck for choice. Peter Timbs Meats Ltd is conveniently located in Edgeware at 70 Edgeware Rd and in Bishopdale at 129 Farrington Ave. For further information or to view their products visit www.petertimbsmeats.co.nz

METHOD: Stir together the marmalade, mustard, sugar and orange juice. Remove the skin, by gently cutting around the hock end and peeling back the skin. Try to keep all the fat on the ham. Place cloves in nice straight lines, and then score your ham around them, making diamond shapes. Apply the glaze. TO SERVE HOT: Pre-heat oven to 160°C, and start basting your ham every 20 minutes or so. At home, we like to heat the ham all the way through. Once we have the colour we want, we cover it in tinfoil and turn the oven down to 120°C. For a full ham (8-9kg), this will take about 2-2 1/2 hours. Remove, and serve hot! TO SERVE COLD: Follow glazing steps, as above, and remove once desired colour is achieved. Place in fridge. Be sure not to cross contaminate with fresh food. TIP: To give your ham that bright and colourful look, we decorate with pineapple pieces and glazed cherries.

On a roll By Melinda Collins

The founders of Queenstown’s Rata and four Madam Woo restaurants, Josh Emett and Fleur Caulton have been on a roll, hospitality speaking, with the shared vision and love of food that has seen both dining options become such a success.

Where did the inspiration for Hawker & Roll come from? Hawker & Roll is inspired by Malaysian street food restaurants and their ability to consistently serve the gutsy dishes Malaysia is famous for. The hawker roll quickly became a signature dish at Madam Woo. From the minute we opened people were raving about it! It felt like a natural next step to dedicate an eatery to our hero dish. When and where are you opening in Christchurch? We’re now open at the bustling location of 79 Cashel Street. Can you tell us about some of the meals on offer at Hawker & Roll? At Hawker & Roll we’re dishing up our take on Malaysian street eats. The hawker roll is the heart of the menu. Malaysian classics such as beef rendang, sticky pork, soy sesame eggplant, percik chicken, honey szechuan prawn and hoisin roasted duck, wrapped in a flaky roti with fresh herbs and pickles, all bursting full of flavour. We’re all about taste and that means using the freshest quality ingredients. I understand Hawker & Roll is leading the growing emergence of fast-casual dining in New Zealand. Can you tell us a bit more about this trend? Dining is becoming a bigger and bigger part of daily life. As a result, people demand more quality, freshness, variety and convenience, which the fast-casual space provides. Hawker & Roll works so well for people because they get to enjoy authentic, quality food without the fuss of a fullservice restaurant.

How have the two existing branches, one in Auckland and one in Queenstown, been received? We opened our first Hawker & Roll in Sylvia Park last December. Depending on who you ask, that’s either the best or worst time of the year to open in a shopping mall! We had lines out the door from the minute we opened. That momentum carried us through the new year into opening our Queenstown site in April. Both sites are quite different, but it’s been an amazing year for us to test the model and watch the brand grow! Why do you think this Asian fusion offering is such a popular one in New Zealand? Kiwis love adventurous food experiences, which is what we always aim to provide with our restaurants. I think Asian fusion appeals to the masses because it’s the perfect mix of foreign components and westernised flavours – perfect for when you don’t know what you feel like! What do you think sets Hawker & Roll aside from the competition? Sustainability is ingrained into our business. Our customers are only ever given metal or paper straws, menus printed on recycled paper, biodegradable takeaway packaging sourced from Innocent Packaging, and paper or cardboard takeaway bags and boxes. We are also working in some sites with compostable options for food scraps and used napkins. What is the best compliment you have ever received? I can’t recall one in particular but it’s always good when someone lets you know, ‘you are doing a damn fine job!’ Goals for the future? Our plan is to grow to more than 100 restaurants, locally and globally by 2028. The rebrand from Mayfare to the Go To Collection has us even more excited about the future than before.

The season of I entertaining By Liesl Johnstone

Entertaining shouldn’t seem a chore. If hosts are having fun, guests have a ticket to relax. Simple catering puts emphasis on friendships; not elaborate food.

t’s great to make a sweet slice ahead of time; even better if it’s flourless for gluten-free or low-carb guests. Chocolate-based recipes that use ground almonds are fab. Next, a trip to the supermarket will do almost all of the food-and-drink prep for you. That’s because a few luxe ingredients are often all it takes to make an occasion feel special and taste delicious. A

range of different craft beers and wines to different tastes will cater to everyone. Good-quality breads and crackers are ideal. Ciabatta can be fried up in quality olive oil with a little lemon, garlic or chilli seasoning to become the basis for a dipping-platter to accompany drinks. It’s a good idea to research which relishes and salad dressings are your favourites, then simply add sour cream and make dressing bowls to accompany freshly chopped vegetables. Good quality nuts, olives and cheeses, partially dried fruits, naan breads, guacamole, plus pastry nibbles from the supermarket’s freezers are all good investments for the outdoor entertaining season. Cream, full-fat yoghurt, sodas, tonics, limes, lemons and fresh herbs will all be useful when presenting platters and drinks. Creatively concoct mocktails using drink concentrates as the base flavour. If the colour’s gorgeous, all the better. Add napkins and jugs of iced water to your table, and voila!

Wild, wild greens The king of green goodness, kale, hands over the crown to leafy cousins of equal royalty. Dandelion leaves, mustard greens, chicory, chard, sorrel and nettle will adorn our plates. They’ve been around forever, it’s just taken time for our spinachand-lettuce tastebuds to embrace a quirkier bitterness.

4.

Grains and seeds will sprout forth From hippie to hip, watch hemp’s popularity rise in 2019. As a high-quality, sustainable protein, it’s amazing in smoothies, great as a flour, and the seeds produce the healthiest oil. Freekeh is a super grain we’ll see more of. Made from green wheat, usually Durum, it can replace quinoa or brown rice.

7.

Sharing the sumptuousness Sharing platters became a cool thing to do. Now it’s the thing to do. Food envy is passé. Palates can explore, chefs can showcase, and it’s great for group dining. It doesn’t matter if eyes are bigger than bellies, or if someone won’t eat their greens.

2.

Fermented fixations As gut health becomes a focus, microbe-filled, probiotic, fermented food is fast becoming a staple. Tempeh joins tofu’s ranks as a diverse soy product that soaks up flavour, while kimchi and sauerkraut are capable of curing our tomato sauce addiction. Kefir and kombucha are exploding their fanbase - a delicious way to down your probiotics.

5.

Fashionable fungi Canterbury has joined France as a truffle producer, and the taste is enticingly unexplainable. Although ‘black gold’, truffles are affordable in slivers. Infusing oils and dusting seasonings, they’re becoming another Kiwi delicacy. There is also an exotic mushroom movement, as foraging local goes mainstream.

8.

Colour craze It’s healthy to eat from the rainbow, but there’s another reason for the increasing colour on our plates, as tropical fruits to edible flowers become vogue – a sausage stew just won’t get the likes on Instagram!

Plant loving Vegan eateries are sprouting up fast, especially in burgeoning Christchurch. Plant-based menus are becoming works of culinary craft, seducing the naysayers. Expect vegetarian dishes to be mainstream now on restaurant menus, if not the stars, as chefs utilise meat rivals, like aubergines. Jackfruit is a meaty-textured newbie that absorbs savoury flavours, and vegan icecreams are the desserts to end the decade.

6.

And a side of insects please… Yes, the entrée of crunchy locusts has landed. Cricket flour will no longer raise eyebrows - we’ll be raising our glasses to its protein-packed, world-saving goodness.

9.

Bountiful bowls Budda bowls, breakfast bowls, acai bowls, poke bowls – the list will only increase in 2019. Abundantly packed with balancing tastes and traditions, they’re so easy to eat.

Hanmer’s new lease on life Hanmer Springs is Canterbury’s recreational heart, with the natural hot springs to which this tantalising township owes its name offering a respite for bustling city dwellers

N

ow it’s set to get bigger and better than ever before, with plans for five new thermal pools and a new aquatic thrill ride. General Manager Graeme Abbot says construction on the $4.3 million development will begin in April 2019 and be completed in late 2019. The five new pools will sit among river boulder terraces and native gardens on what is currently a grassed area next to the Rainbow Pools. A lot of time and effort has gone into ensuring plans for the new development are environmentally sustainable. The new 13.5 metre high slide will attach to the complex’s existing hydroslide tower and sit next to the SuperBowl, where the complex’s AquaPlay area currently is.

“Riders will shoot down a winding hydroslide in two-person tubes, before going down a steep drop that propels them up a nearvertical wall for a moment of weightlessness before zooming back down and onto the slide’s finish,” Graeme says. The pools’ have lodged a resource consent application for the development with the Hurunui District Council, this will be a publicly notified process so people can make submissions on the application. “Those we have spoken to thus far are incredibly excited about this development’s potential to make Hanmer Springs even more popular with visitors and boost local businesses.”

Jarry eyed Mason jars are not only perfect for edible gifts, but they’re also a great option for soaps, art supplies, or other small gifts. Add a bit of fabric or recycled tissue paper and let the gift do the talking.

3.

Fabulous Furoshiki Furoshiki is the traditional Japanese art of wrapping a gift in a beautiful fabric, scarf, or bandana which can be used again and again. The creative twisting here brings sophistication to fabric gift wrap.

5.

Leaf it Adding a touch of nature makes green gifting a more literal affair. Bamboo or banana leaves can be used to cover a small gift, or why not try a holly leaf, birch bark, or a bird feather to add a pretty natural embellishment.

Fresh new house plans out now. Our already huge range of house plan designs is growing, meaning you have even more choice. Simply choose a plan and go with it, or use one as a starting point and customise it to suit. The choice is yours. Get inspired at orangehomes.co.nz

2.

Artistic Accessorising If you’ve been wondering what to do with all the artwork that comes home from preschool all year long, it can have a second life as gift wrap.

4.

Tag team Why not try repurposing Christmas cards from previous years to use as a gift tag for the next gift you give. Punch a hole and tie a ribbon to dress up any present. Or give plantable gift tags a go. Made from paper embedded with seeds, the gift recipient can plant the tag and watch it grow.

6.

Plain Jane Plain packaging is much more likely to be repurposed by its recipient than its festive siblings. So keep it plain, Jane.

Waste not, K Want not Are you looking for a simple, environmentally friendly sewage treatment system that doesn’t require expensive, on-going maintenance? The NaturalFlow system not only provides an ecosustainable sewage solution and produces a high quality result to treat wastewater, but saves money and time.

eeping it simple is the company’s philosophy – using power-free, natural processes to treat wastewater. Owner/director of NaturalFlow South, Kingsley Kepple, says the vermiculture system is an alternative to aerating treatment systems which require pumps, electricity and computers – which can break down over time – and there is no noise! “It’s a natural system, which replicates what is done in nature. It’s really economical to run as there are no ongoing pump costs and it works all day, totally on aerobic treatment processes, doing everything for you.” The system is also very flexible, he says. “It’s ideal for the more awkward sites where you can’t get a

big concrete tank to, such as in the Marlborough Sounds. It’s made of modular plastic and weighs only up to 600kg per unit. You don’t need power, so it’s perfect if you are off the grid.” Produced in the North Island for more than 18 years, Kingsley began installing NaturalFlow systems in the South Island after the earthquakes, when he was working in Christchurch on commercial road drainage. “We decided it was such a good system, that I took over the agency for the South Island, selling and supplying them to a range of customers, from farmers and lifestyle block owners, to camping grounds and homestays.” Visit naturalflow.co.nz for more information or phone 03 323 8541.

greetings & Property Insights CHRISTMAS

from Lynette McFadden

Harcourts gold Businesss Owner and Inspirational Women’s Ambassador

As a person who sets high (at times ridiculously high) standards, it’s often a relief to get to the end of the year – and this year especially. Along with everyone else, whether working at a breakneck pace or to a simpler rhythm, I find it a good time to reflect on the events of the previous twelve months. The businessperson in me looks to analyse and assess. To attempt to repeat the successes and minimize the falls in the year that’s been and, of course, there have been both. Achieving the highest performing office internationally for the Harcourts brand has been the biggest accolade. It’s seen the Papanui office placed as the number-

one office out of over 900 in 10 countries. Undoubtedly a proud moment, but there have also been the usual conflicts that come with running a successful business whilst managing the various agendas of over 120 people across five offices. It’s also been a year where law changes around Overseas Investment and AntiMoney Laundering have required a new level of compliance and vigilance. 2019 will no doubt see even more training and specialist assistance to ensure the highest levels of professional care are maintained in these very new areas. Personally, the mother in me is adjusting to the new dimension of having two sons mostly living away from home and another Christmas (the seventh) without our eldest son Harry, who will be working in the Japanese Alps. Like every parent, these moments make me thoughtful and

nostalgic, and probably contribute to the rationale for always having an open house on Christmas Day. We’re a ‘more the merrier’ kind of family and our day is complete with our own quirky traditions and enough food and drink to feed a small army. So, it’s been a great year, a changing market and a changing environment. Adjusting to new price points in different demographics whilst instigating additional support services for the company. The appointment of a full-time social media designer has opened-up a whole new methodology for connecting with potential clients and purchasers, and the year ahead sees us adding to this part of the business. Giving back has also been a constant theme, and children and the vulnerable are the first on our list. So, what will 2019 look like? Like other years, it will probably have its share of challenge and cheer. I’m hoping it means lots of good madness, a caring community, lots of opportunity and more time with the people I love. Happy Christmas!

F One-Stop Christmas Shop It’s the last day of the working year, the office closed at lunchtime and Phillippa was due in town for a Christmas party at 4pm. But first, she needed gifts!

inally leaving her desk at 2:30pm, she still had to do the shopping, change into her party clothes, and be back in town in 90 minutes. Thankfully, she knew exactly where to head. Her first stop was Coco Gifts, located right in the heart of St Albans, just a few blocks from Merivale Mall. Finding a park outside was easy and, while the shop was busy when she arrived,

friendly staff were on hand to help with gift selection. There was something for everyone, including popular brands, like French Country, Citta Design, Beau Accessories, Four Corners, Helga May, Babu, and Moana Road. Exploring the beautiful range around her, Phillippa was soon ticking items off her shopping list: • Secret Santa – tick • Gift for the woman who has everything – tick • Gift for a candle lover – tick • Gift for a male – tick • Gifts for little people – tick • Gift for a jewellery lover – tick! Next thing, the staff were busy wrapping the gifts and, as she went to pay, a bonus $20 loyalty voucher prints out from the Coco Gifts VIP club. Tomorrow, she can come back and treat herself. At 4:05pm, Phillippa arrives at the Christmas party with the best gifts for all her favourite people and, most importantly, the experience was a breeze. Other guises of stoneware add drama and quality to living spaces. Plinths, statues, or urns invite at an entranceway, staircase, or patio. A granite coffee table, beautifully crafted onyx bowl, handcarved sandstone sculpture, quartz vase or Romanesque wall art will inspire its surrounds. Design pieces can also blend with other natural elements, such as a clear glass dining tabletop with the juxtaposition of a solid stone base. The contrast of wood, and metal also combine well. Colour Craze By Tracey Edwardes

In a world full of neutrals, it is no surprise we are craving colour, as it enhances the senses and heightens emotion and mood. We look at incorporating colour into your home.

Coloured appliances and utensils are simply delicious these days. Colour also means you can find things – they shout from a drawer of stainless steel. With a black kitchen for example, red adds drama, hot pink oozes pizzazz. Akin to the ’50s domestic goddess days, retro pastels that became so chic still charm the benchtops.

Look closely at the towels, they can fade to grey before you’ve realised. A neutral bathroom can so easily have a creative change around every week. Lime green towels with a leafy indoor plant and a quirky frog by the basin, a vintage vase of fuchsia roses against raspberry-red flannels, or a watery world of aqua soaps and icy-blue bathmats.

Cushions; the chameleons of interior design., these plump pops of hue are excuses to show off your personality. If the dining room is dim, utilise lovely yellow. Too hot in midsummer, cool with the blues and mint greens. Follow the palette of the flower garden outside, purple is vogue. Have an object de art in a different colour to everything else – all eyes will be upon it.

Change the duvet for an instant mood lift – it’s a bedroom’s creative canvas. Include colour to relax and inspire in lamps, curtains, headboards and linens. It’s likely to be the first thing you see in the morning, so wake up to your favourite. A. ADAIRS B. MUSTARD MADE C. KAS AUSTRALIA D. WEST ELM

athroom renovations are a specialty, and the company offers the complete design and build package. Architectural Designer, Licensed Building Practitioner and co-owner, Rochelle Foster (also of Yardley and Foster Architecture) says, “if you’d love a new bathroom, but you’re just too busy to take the project on, we’ll take care of everything”. The process begins with initial free consultation. Rochelle will take you through design concepts and planning, they’ll choose fixtures, select tiles, lighting, ventilation, heating and colours and the in-house quantity surveyor will provide you with the complete cost proposal. Before work begins, Rochelle can show you a three-dimensional image of your finished

product. Aquapro handles all of the consenting required, as well as managing all the subcontractors, through to the final clean. Rochelle’s design approach is clientdriven and sees her create stunning classic renovations for both historic Fendalton homesteads as well as for those who seek something minimalist and clean-lined, or luxuriously dramatic, or practical and easy to clean for a young family. Editor: Melinda Collins

e’re heading quickly into the time of the year when we start making a raft of resolutions that we vow to keep, with whole of life improvement at their very heart. And, despite the fact that few of these goals make it beyond mid-year, their setting maintains its place in our New Year traditions. Despite the questionable nature of their attainment, at the heart of these annual goals is a desire for self-improvement. While our highest aspirations for ourselves often conflict with our daily desires, resolutions are designed to give our aspirations the upper hand. As it relates to our homes – whether it is the cleaning of, the restoration of, or the building of – it’s the perfect opportunity to hit the reset button and start the quest for advancement when the clock ticks over, marking the beginning of 2019. For the goal-focused A-type personalities amongst us, we’ve got all the beautiful inspiration needed to start the New Year off on the right foot in the pages ahead. We really do have something for everyone here – the House of the Year winners for 2018, some aspirational new builds, some hot new products for your renovation and some influencing words of wisdom from some of the country’s biggest movers and shakers. So from the Metropol Build team, have a wonderful Christmas break and we look forward to bringing you more inspiration in 2019.

Seasonal Solutions

Technically, our country enjoys a temperate maritime climate, but quite often climate doesn’t get the memo and it’s just a little ‘too’ something to get the most from your outdoor living space: a little too hot, a little too windy or a little too wet.

T

he team at Stratco can provide you with the full range of outdoor shelter solutions, bespoke to your home, garden and lifestyle. “The right solution can really extend the amount of time you spend outdoors within the warmer seasons, and also get you out there for more months of the year,” says General Manager David Allingham. Stratco’s large range includes everything from fencing for wind breaks, fixed verandas, sunroofs, fully electronic louvres, carports, pergolas, garden and wood sheds. They’re engineered to withstand the wind conditions of the area, and the streamlined designs complement any style of home and garden. Stratco Louvre or Fixed Veranda systems are custom built to your size and layout to suit your needs – units can be attached to your house or freestanding. Louvre systems come standard with a

remote control and rain sensors to give you complete control over the weather. Fixed verandas include sheeted roofing to provide strength for wind and snow loading, and add polycarbonate sheets to allow protected light to come through. Both systems create comfortable living spaces in our otherwise harsh environment. Outdoor Product Specialist Steve Cain says, “it works really well when people spend some time over the summer break considering how they would like to make the most of their outdoor spaces”. “In the New Year, we can complete installation within six weeks of the order, so their outdoor time for summer 2018/19 could be extended well into autumn.” The process is simple and stress free: Steve can talk you through the full range of solutions bespoke to you in size and colours. Once you’ve made some choices, the next step is the free measure and

quote. The quote is fully detailed and all-inclusive for plumbing and electrical. “There won’t be any hidden costs,” Steve says. On accepting the quote you’ll receive a fully dimensioned plan. Peace of mind comes from knowing that the team at Stratco offers project management that includes all of the subtrades and, of course, quality control. There is a great range of images on the website at www.stratco.co.nz, the Hands Road showroom is open 8am to 5pm on weekdays and Steve carries a working model on his truck. Not just a great looking and fully engineered solution to suit demanding Australasian conditions, all Stratco products come with a full warranty. “We stand by our products. The Stratco brand is focused on quality and service and we are justly proud of what we do,” Dave says.

Incentives for inner city living

By Harcourts Gold Consultant Mark O’Loughlin

About 6,000 people currently live in Christchurch’s inner city; a third less than pre-quake. We have been warned we must speed up central city growth if new enterprises are to survive. The CBD has seen a lot of retail, office and civic developments, but the missing ingredient is people.

I

believe it’s critically important for the future of the city to have a strong residential component. You need a night-time economy to add to the daytime economy. So I totally endorse the Christchurch City Council’s recently announced three-year plan aimed at

accelerating the inner city population, named Project 8011 after the central city postcode and the estimated number of homes needed for 20,000 people. Incentives in the plan range from working with developers to provide subsidies around the consenting and building

fees charged by the council, to low equity loans, rebates on development contributions and investment from the NZ Super Fund, as well as introducing rating and other financial incentives to encourage people to buy. Its geographical focus is the central city as defined in the Christchurch District Plan – known as the ‘Four Avenues’. I am already seeing keen interest from buyers in apartments, town houses and homes in the specified area; the SOHO Apartments at 118 Salisbury St where prepaid rates and pre-paid body corp fees for up to three years are part of the incentive to purchase, are 60 percent pre-sold. So the new plan is being talked about and is working. To find out more about these incentives and other inner city properties, contact me at mark.oloughlin@harcourts.co.nz.

A

t this time of the year, it’s important that we also help those less fortunate. Not-for-profits are a vital thread in the social fabric of our community. However, they are also often the organisations that are the humblest – the ones that fly under the radar, whispering their success stories, when they have every reason to shout them from the rooftop. That’s why I was so pleased to see the Christchurch City Mission win the Champion Canterbury Community Impact Award for the medium/large enterprise category, and why I am so happy to lend my voice to raise awareness of their Back to School programme. The Christchurch City Mission has seen year-on-year demand increases for their support, which is compounded at this time of the year with Christmas and the significant financial outlay for families at the start of the school year. To help ease this pressure, the Christchurch City Mission offers practical assistance through the purchasing of school related items, such as uniforms, shoes, stationery and other curricular material. In 2012, the cost to deliver this initiative was almost $86,000, which supported 140 people. By 2017, that cost had jumped to over $274,000, supporting 470 people. This increase in demand shows the significant need in our community for this support. So, this summer, we encourage you to show your support – whether it’s through volunteering, donations or funding. The Christchurch City Mission measures success not solely by the statistics, but by the connections made and the self-worth restored to someone’s life, and that’s more than worthy of our support.

t was exciting to see in November that drilling is now underway at the Canterbury Arena site as part of early work to fast-track the project. Geotechnical investigations began in mid-November to determine the condition of the land as part of the Investment Case being prepared for the Arena. In total, 81 separate tests will be undertaken to give detailed information across the entire site. The information will allow the Investment Case to consider the most favourable areas for construction, assess options for the arena layout, develop conceptual designs for the form of the arena and its foundations, and evaluate any uncertainties related to the ground conditions. Early work will ensure we have the best information right from the start to feedin to the design process. We know that similar ground conditions exist across the city, from other work already underway. These tests will help fill in the gaps and provide robust information for the planning process. We’ll be discussing the findings of this early work as part of ongoing workshops and forums with key community and interest groups to ensure we get an arena that meets the needs of our region. This fulfils our promise to get the project moving and to speed up the recovery in the central city. The message we received from people who attended our arena workshop in October was to get started. We heard this call, which is why we’re cracking on with the work needed to get the site ready and get the Investment Case fit for purpose.

O

ne of the great challenges facing people in education, be it schools, universities or other tertiary organisations, is the impact and influence of ‘new’ technologies that are really questioning the validity of ‘old’ knowledge. The world is changing more quickly than in previous generations because of the digital revolution, and educators are challenged by the ‘relevance’ question more seriously now than ever before. Can we just keep doing what we have been or do we need to fundamentally do something different? When ‘answers’ can be found at the click of a button, perhaps education needs to be more about the question? Where does the balance lie between the ‘academic’ skills of the past and the ‘soft’ skills of the future? For us at Christ’s College, we’ve had a hugely successful year in terms of academic achievements. But our measure of success is equally about our graduate character, in particular, exhibiting what we call our graduate outcome. These are dispositions and attitudes that include compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, and enterprise and curiosity; all linked to our Christian virtues. The mystery of faith fundamentally speaks to the need to be curious. As Dr Stephen Hawking said: “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious and, however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t give up. Unleash your imagination. Shape the future.”

t’s hard to believe that it is Christmas time and as always, I realise that the year has once again flown past. I always look forward to Christmas because it is a time when we can spend more time with our friends and family. As a business owner, it is also a good time to step back and to reflect on the business year, in particular to revisit the goals that we set ourselves at the beginning of the year. It is easy, when we are busy, to fall into the trap of working in the business rather than working on the business. Having a break gives us the opportunity to step back from the business and to have a critical look at it. This coming year is shaping to be another busy one for Fraser Thomas Ltd. We are moving into our new offices, which will be more suitable for our expanding workforce. We are working with some inspirational clients, who are challenging our engineering ingenuity and will ensure that we are exposed to some exciting engineering challenges next year. That being said, next year my goal is to try and make more time in my busy schedule, to ensure that I have more time for my wife and kids and also for myself. Success in business typically takes a lot of time and effort, but we also need to try and prioritise working on ourselves, in order to enable us to maintain our health and focus (which ultimately will help to improve our businesses).

A

s we head into Christmas let me give you a few numbers on Ōtākaro’s projects that help illustrate how far we have come in Christchurch’s regeneration this year – 29,000 plants and 600,000 thousand pavers make up the City Promenade that now lines the Avon River; 97,000 hours went into repairing, widening and reprioritising Manchester Street for buses; 15,000 cubic metres of concrete and 1,450 tonnes of steel are taking shape as Te Pae, the city’s new convention centre, which is now 25 percent complete. A more significant measure of progress may be considering the spaces we can once again use. In February the former site of the CTV building was reopened as a green space for peaceful reflection, as desired by the affected families. Victoria Square emerged from a 13-month restoration in March and the determination to retain its iconic character has recently been recognised with a Civic Trust award. The Bowker Fountain is back to its fully illuminated former glory, and the paths levelled and widened to make the area safer, more accessible and ready for the likes of Carols by Candlelight. In October we opened the fourth and final gathering space in the South Frame Kahikatea Common - complete with native plants, seating and the central city’s first butterfly enclosure. It feels like a year that has gone faster than Santa down a chimney and I hope you have noticed the changes. All the best for the holiday season and I look forward to updating you on what lies ahead for Ōtākaro in the New Year.

S

ince 2011, plenty has been said about the opportunity Christchurch has to redefine itself. But, as in most cities, conversations about vision can sometimes be overtaken by more vocal demands for immediate action and visible progress. As we near the end of 2018, a year in which there have been significant visible signs of progress, the focus must continue to shift from recovery to the longer-term, ongoing and more complex process of regeneration. While individual agencies deliver value through their individual work programmes, it is the outcomes from the collective regeneration initiatives of the wider public and private sectors that generate the most value. Two examples this year have been the completion and opening of Tūranga, the new central library, and the EntX cinema complex. In just a few months’ time, the Christchurch Town Hall will re-open and, this time next year, the opening of Te Pae (the new convention centre) will be months away. But it is also important to remember that regeneration is not about new buildings and facilities. Attracting more people to Christchurch as visitors and new residents must be one of the city’s core objectives. Unlike Auckland and Wellington, Christchurch has the capacity to grow without the space and infrastructure constraints the northern cities are currently grappling with. However, it will not be a case of ‘build it and they will come’. Christchurch must demonstrate how it is uniquely placed to support the country’s growth and its relevance to New Zealand’s future success. That will be a task for all of us in 2019.

Meanwhile, Takahe Construction Ltd won the title of Registered Master Builders 2018 Renovation of the Year, for its superb renovation of a Merivale home. The company also took out the national category win for the Renovation over $1 million Award and the Outdoor Living Award.

METZGER BUILDERS WON SUPREME HOUSE OF THE YEAR FOR 2018

HOUSE OF THE YEAR Judges were impressed with MBL’s clever and balanced design, with this home showing a considered approach in every respect. “The large home sits boldly on a rural site, but peacefully in its landscaped environment. The impeccable crafting and attention to detail

demonstrated by the builders and subcontractors is truly exceptional. “The collaboration between client, architect and builder has made this a home that perfectly suits the needs of the growing family. It is a deserving winner of this award.”

CHRISTCHURCH HAS BEEN THE PROUD RECIPIENT OF BOTH SUPREME AWARDS, FOR A REDWOOD HOME AND MERIVALE RENOVATION.

RENOVATION OF THE YEAR Judges remarked on the amazing quality of the Takahe Construction Ltd’s renovation of the house, which was extensively damaged in the Christchurch quakes. “Originally built in the 1990s, the client chose to engage the original architect to complete

a full re-design, whilst retaining the elegance of the original home. A collaborative approach between client, architect, engineer and builder made this project a success. The quality demonstrated in both the rebuild work and the overall renovation is a credit to the team involved. “This is truly a spectacular

home, which the builder should be extremely proud of.” Registered Master Builders Chief Executive David Kelly says, House of the Year epitomises building excellence and showcases Master Builders as the custodians of quality and innovation across all types of homes and price brackets. “Residential building continues to fuel the construction boom, and while these homes need to be built quickly and cost effectively, it must not be at the expense of quality. House of the Year sets the standard of what is possible, both in quality and innovation. “The craftmanship demonstrated within all of our finalists shows that our members are building quality homes for all New Zealanders. From the luxury homes, to the cost-effective builds, to apartments, these homes are some of the finest in the country.” For more information about the competition, visit www.houseoftheyear.co.nz.

ased on interviews with those who lived and worked through the Canterbury earthquakes, Rising from the Rubble is co-authored by Dr Michael Ardagh and Dr Joanne Deely and published by Canterbury University Press. It gives a compelling account of staff working in the Canterbury health system who rallied to maintain and rebuild essential health services, ensuring continuity of care for the most vulnerable, as well as managing the significant increased demand for services to support the ongoing impact on the mental health and wellbeing of Cantabrians. Dr Ardagh says he and Dr Deely felt there was a lack of information about the enormous role played by people in health during and after the earthquakes and that it was vital to record the experiences of patients and staff. “We wanted to capture their stories in a book that would be accessible to the general public as well as to health staff.” Stories about the immediate disaster aftermath include accounts of emergency medical teams successfully managing a huge influx of patients, blood bank (transfusion services), staff maintaining uninterrupted services despite working intermittently by torchlight and also ankle-deep in water, and the maintenance and engineering staff striving to keep the hospital functioning despite the ravaged infrastructure. “Most people would have run for the hills rather than stay underneath a concrete building. It was typical that staff chose not to flee, but to fight – to stay at, or even return to, work.”

A new book, Rising from the Rubble: A health system’s extraordinary response to the Canterbury earthquakes, reveals untold stories of courage, compassion and creativity.

Huntsbury Heaven As a first-time entrant, Trevor Hone Builders was the Mid and South Canterbury Region House of the Year New Home over $2 million winner, before making the list of the country’s top 100 home builds, as a national Reserve Gold finalist in the House of the Year Awards for 2018.

D

irector and Master Builder Trevor says the Huntsbury Hill house was a phenomenal building challenge, but one of the the best things about this intense build has been the interaction with the owners and their happiness with the finished product. Designed by Cymon Alfrey Architects, the house is a melange of angles and detailing, about as far from a box on a hill as you could imagine. As with every project, Trevor was “passionate about realising the architect’s vision: if you’re not passionate you can’t do it. The complex architecture and engineering details have to be absorbed, understood, questioned and implemented”. Engineered to the latest requirements the house has a reinforced concrete

spine. The tricky steep, all-rock hill site has a foundation that has multiple layers, cut into the rock. The tiered retaining landscape walls form part of the foundations too. The roof is clad with Coloursteel tray roofing and a Viking Enviroclad roof garden, while the wall cladding is a combination of pitched Basalt stone, Alucabond, Cedar and tiles. The interior of the three-bedroom home again utilises the Basalt Stone, with floors tiled and carpeted. The striking Mondrian style front door gives way to the artgallery feel of the entrance hall that is tiled on both walls and floor. North facing decking runs the length of the upper and lower levels, with glass balustrading to ensure uninterrupted views. The curved spine of the house, clad

in pitched Basalt, which forms the main structure, runs externally and through the house, creating a spectacular feature. Trevor says this is one of the standout builds of his 20-year career for the level of technical difficulty and the stunning end result. A perfectionist himself from the foundations up to the minute finishing details, Trevor acknowledges the commitment to an outstanding result from his team, and Please review your subcontractors JPM Contracting, High Spec Electrical, AVI Automation, Greg Sutherland Roofing, Whitehead Plumbing and Gas, Application Specialists, Metro Performance Glass, Dyer Decorating and Monarch Aluminium, for the aluminium joinery as well as the spectacular Mondrian front door.

Technical competence The vision for Christchurch’s changing skyline has needed contributions from many different areas of expertise to start to bring it to reality. Moore Construction is one such company with its focused technical competence in earthmoving and pile driving.

nvariably the first contractor on a site to prepare the ground for the subsequent construction, Moore Construction has a reputation for being well-equipped to take on complex projects. “A recently finished project at Christchurch Hospital for a bridge linking the old and new parts of the hospital, involved installing screw pile to a depth of 24m into Riccarton Gravels,” says General Manager Nathan Moore. “Our hard working and technically experienced team saw this project through multiple site restraints and complexities to a safe completion.” Another piling project in the CBD was on St Asaph Street for a new commercial building. Here seven days of work saw 24 screw piles installed to 13.5 metres. “With surrounding existing buildings restricting the amount of space for our work on the site and a strict programme, the results are a credit to our team.” Moore Construction constantly looks to expand its resources to provide services for their clients. “A recent acquisition is a compact directional drill from Italy, a light unit ideal for drilling soak holes and retaining walls for residential or commercial buildings.” Versatility is definitely the by-word with this company. Advanced Ground Engineering Solutions from Mainmark Help Remediate Upmarket Apartment Complex

K

amahi Apartments is a striking eight storey residential apartment building located in Merivale. The apartment building was recently given a new lease of life by Bruce McDonald who undertook an impressive renovation project to create a building with unique street appeal that really makes the property stand out. When Bruce, the Director of KCRB Ltd, purchased the Kamahi Apartments, he understood that the building would need extensive remediation work to ensure it would meet the required New Building Standard (NBS). Since the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, widespread liquefaction has affected countless building foundations across Christchurch, and the NBS was introduced in 2017 to ensure the seismic resilience of buildings, and future safety of occupants. In order to achieve the required NBS, the building’s structural foundations needed to be widened and strengthened. Bruce consulted with geotechnical engineers to analyse the integrity of the soil beneath the structure, then contacted Mainmark to assist with the important step of re-levelling the building. Mainmark is a leading ground engineering firm with a proven reputation backed by expertise, experience and demonstrated results.

The organisation has remediated hundreds of structures affected by seismic liquefaction including the 33,000-tonne Christchurch Art Gallery. After assessing the ground conditions and structural requirements of the Kamahi Apartments, Mainmark recommended their JOG ComputerControlled Grouting (known as JOG) as the most suitable solution for relevelling.

JOG is a highly advanced and extremely accurate method for raising foundations and can be precisely controlled to provide very small amounts of lift at a time. It works by stabilising the soil beneath the foundations and consolidating weak ground to deliver a highly accurate outcome, regardless of building size or complexity. Since Mainmark introduced the JOG technology to New Zealand, it has become a proven and safe method for treating buildings affected by seismic activity. The grout injections are non-invasive, and controlled using a central

computer to effectively and gently “float” the building back into position with finite control. This process allows the structure to be raised evenly with pinpoint accuracy, while avoiding undue stress on the building as it is re-levelled. The re-levelling project was completed using Mainmark’s proprietary Teretek® engineered resin, which was identified as an ideal solution to underseal the ground floor slab and foundations, for the required Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) Reinstatement. In a process that is likened to keyhole surgery, Teretek® is injected through carefully selected points. The resin quickly expands, immediately filling any voids. Like the JOG solution, this process is fast, clean and unobtrusive. Mainmark worked around the clock to complete works before Christmas 2017, successfully and efficiently re-levelling the building to within the required tolerances, and helping to achieve 100% NBS . “Nothing was a problem for Mainmark. They were incredibly cooperative and worked at a great pace, including one 7-day week, to get the project finished by 22nd December. This enabled KCRB Ltd to do crucial work over the Christmas period and stay on schedule to complete the project in 2018,” said Bruce.
