“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognising and appreciating what we do have.” Frederick Keonig
I
t’s long been said that money doesn’t buy happiness and I’m sure that no truer saying has been said. After all, some of the world’s most financially-rich are also some of the world’s most happiness-poor. I think it’s easy for us to forget that happiness isn’t something that is handed to some people and not to others because, as the Dalai Lama once said, “Happiness is not something ready-made; it comes from your own actions”. Happiness results, not from circumstance, but how we react to circumstance and the beauty of that is the knowledge and appreciation that our reactions to circumstance are completelyABC AUDITED within our control. So in 2020, my challenge to you is, smell the roses, use the good tea set, have the second glass of wine and accept the compliment. And remember, no act of kindness, no hint of compassion, no good deed – AUDITED however small – is ever wasted; 2020 is the year of happiness but let’s also make it the year of kindness.

And because it’s from the horse’s mouth, it must be true!” As the Rubber Band Boy, Shay has smashed two Guinness World records for the most rubber bands strapped to a human face, and took the stretchy show to 30 countries. He asked a plastic surgeon if it was OK. “It was a great thing for my skin, he assured me, and would probably keep me looking younger!” Hailing from Geraldine, he cut his comedic teeth at Burnside High School, where his parents sent their talented son to for the renowned drama department. In 1996, while still a student, he hit busker bigtime. Now a quarter of a century later, he’s just turned 40. “I’m over the hill now – so I’ve got to start ticking off all the boxes.” He lives in Lyttelton with Riley the dog, who also has a few talented tricks. Shay’s a wicket keeper for Heathcote Cricket Club, where he also volunteers. Always having a side-splitting project on the go, he recently starred as butcher, florist and masseuse in NZ on Air shortlisted The Woolston Complex, filmed at The Tannery. Aspiring to launch Palaver as a live-audience TV series, he loves the concept of a chat show. “There’s nothing on TVNZ like it at the moment. It is closest in format to This Is Your Life”. Except this show will be a grand palaver of life’s more funnier follies.

Shay is best known at the World Buskers Festival as Rubber Band Boy and, in 2019, packed the house with busker show The Revolver Club. He recently hosted his inaugural Palaver chat shows in Lyttleton’s intimate Wunderbar - delving into the minds of colourful kiwi celebrities, one on one. Peter Rowley, legendary funny man and co-writer/sidekick for the Billy T James Show, was one of his victims. “Shay’s a great smooth-talking, cool, goodlooking guy,” Peter says. “The show was sensational. He delved into drawers from the back of my mind that I never knew existed!” He will be under the microscope once more for Palaver Grand, uniting with an eclectic cast of four on the couch – in front of a much grander audience. Other guests for the R18 show include favourite television host and comedian Dai Henwood, actor Jonny Brugh, aka Deacon the Vampire, of film What we do in the Shadows fame, and from Daredevil Chicken Club from USA – sensational improvisers and regular busker act. House band Lawrence Arabia will entertain. “These are all people I’ve loved performing with in the past,” Shay says. “Palaver means to talk unproductively at length – exactly like the open and free-flying nature of the show. Amazing Grace By Celine Gibson
It was always in his mind to cast an actress as young as possible in the role of Juliet because Shakespeare’s Juliet, of Romeo and Juliet, was a 13-year-old girl. Derek Doddington, Founder and Director of Top Dog Theatre, stands firmly by his ground-breaking decision. “With casting such a young cast, I’ll either fall on my sword or it will be the biggest triumph,” Derek says, with an irrepressible twinkle in his eye.

hirteen-year-old Grace Opie, who plays Juliet in Top Dog’s Summer Shakespeare Festival, confesses she’s a bit obsessed with Shakespeare and has loved Romeo and Juliet “for ages”. Grace studied the play last year at her school, Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery and feels she has come into the show with a pretty good understanding of the story. “But speaking the lines is very different to reading them and studying the context of the play.” Grace says the portraying of Romeo and Juliet as the Bard of Avon intended them to be, makes the show feel a lot more realistic, as many of the decisions they make are impulsive and don’t end well. “It also explains how they fell in love almost immediately and how strong their emotions became that eventually led them to making decisions without much thought.” Grace has attended Original Scripts Theatre School since the age of six and says she has had great experiences there and with other theatre companies. Summer Shakespeare is her first experience of outdoor theatre and it’s been a positive one. “I’ve really enjoyed rehearsing outside at Mona Vale. I’ve loved the process and people, seeing everything come together and working with such an experienced team as Top Dog. Everyone has been really nice and supportive.”
Grace says she loves to perform and would like to explore as many different genres as she can in the future. “But definitely more Shakespeare!” Romeo is played by 17-year-old Rhys Murdoch and Mercutio by 18-yearold Felix Elliott, completing the teen cast of lead roles that Derek had long envisioned. “I’ve seen performances where the actress playing Juliet’s obviously too old – I recall one where they gave her a doll to make her look 13!” Derek has switched the gender of a few characters in the play in order to keep a good balance of male and female actors on stage – hence there’s now a Mother Superior and Benvolia instead of Friar Laurence and Benvolio. The original music score is composed by Harry Lawrence, and the wardrobe department is under the expert hands of Caitlin Maclennan and Polly Mortimer. “There’s rich comedy, beautiful live music, singing and dancing, and our costume people have done a brilliant job,” Derek says, “Romeo and Juliet is the ultimate love story. Pack a picnic, bring your deck-chairs, sit back and just enjoy being part of it all.” Romeo and Juliet is showing from Wednesday 12 February to Saturday 22 February at The Mound Lawn, Mona Vale, 6pm nightly and 2pm Saturday matinees. Sam Neill’s By Melinda Collins
Sam Neill has been an international spy (Possession), a palaeontologist (Jurassic Park), a senior KGB officer (Amerika) and a corrupt policeman (Peaky Binders), but his most recent role was ‘host’ to a possession of family members who turned up at his Central Otago vineyard, Two Paddocks, over the Christmas holidays.
“I
did get a bit of a break,” he says when we catch up in the New Year. “But it was chaos with grandchildren turning up… they seem to be proliferating!” The 72-year-old has been a grandfather since 2000 and, between three children and a stepchild, he’s since racked up several more, not that he’s complaining! “It’s always fun,” he says of the craziness that comes with a full house during the festive period. But that’s not to say he’s lonely when they go back home; there’s always the other side of the family to keep him company. Charlie Pickering (that’s his duck), Susan Sarandon and Anjelica Huston (a couple of his many beloved sheep), Helena Bonham Carter and Graham Norton (two of the cows) are all part and – very welcome – parcel of farm-life, Neill says. “Every animal has a different
personality, so I’ve grown fond of them and enjoy their company.” The Central Otago crew have developed somewhat of a media presence themselves, with Neill regularly sharing their exploits with his many global followers on Twitter and Instagram. It was 1993 when the opportunity came up for him to purchase the block of farmland near Queenstown. But it would take a giant leap of faith for Neill to plant pinot grapes in the first of his vineyards – of which there are now four – in the rugged Gibbston Valley. Because although Central is world-renowned for the drop now, in 1993 it was yet to be demonstrated that the region’s dicey climate could produce a quality pinot. But then wine – Neill says – is in his blood. His family has been trading in the business of ‘booze’ in Otago since the gold rush, importing and trading wine and spirits since
PHOTOGRAPHER: CHRISTOPHER D THOMPSON 12 6 February, 2020 Metropol
as far back as the 1860s. “I’ve always enjoyed wine, I’ve never been interested in booze, but love wine; there was always wine on the table growing up,” Neill reminisces. “Once I went abroad and I could afford to buy good wine as opposed to ‘vin ordinaire’ then I got the opportunity to grow wine and realised I wanted to grow really good wine. It’s been a slow process to realise that, but a very interesting one.” So what makes a good wine? “You can reduce it to three things – the right grape, the right place and people. There are other things of course – patience, diligence, hard work, 8000 years of viticultural knowledge – there are many things that come into it, but I’m not interested in making wine; I only want to make great wine.” And great wine is exactly what he’s making, at least if accolades are any measure of success.

s
His four small certified organic vineyards produce pinot noir and a little bit of riesling and he’s pretty proud of earning 95 points from Wine Spectator in New York two years in a row. Two Paddocks is low yield, boutique winery and perhaps that’s why it’s so good; or perhaps it’s the passion that goes into it. Ask Neill and he’ll tell you it’s all about the people. To Sam Neill, it’s the people that make everything. He first caught the acting bug off his older brother who dabbled while at university. It looked like “a bit of fun” especially when family on both sides were in the military. The fact that ‘bit of fun’ ended up becoming a career wasn’t something he expected, “but just as well because I have a spectacular lack of confidence in any other field!” “I certainly would not be much of a soldier, less of a businessman and probably a pretty average lawyer – all three things I contemplated at some point.” He’s earned three lifetime achievement awards in the last few months – one in Spain, one in New Zealand and one in Australia. And the accomplishment has given him reason to reflect. “It looks like a very busy life, but I remember a lot of sitting around listening to good music and spinning yarns with friends, so while it’s been busy it hasn’t been hectic.” Neill’s Twitter account says he is also seen acting “on occasion”, but at 72 it seems he is busier than ever, with a slew of new movies recently, topped by the recent announcement that
he’s reuniting with his 90s Jurassic Park co-stars Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum on Jurassic World 3 in June 2021. “I’ll be away in six weeks and that will take me somewhere warm when it gets cold in Central. I’m very fond of Jeff (Goldblum) and Laura (Dern) and it’s always great to reunite with old pals. There’ll be a lot of laughs to be had.” There will be plenty of local work on the cards too. “One of the best things about what I do is to come home and work on familiar ground,” he says. “I’ve actually done three films here and in Australia in the last 12 months; Ride Like a Girl has done well in New Zealand and I’ve got another one coming up soon in May called Rams which, as the title suggests, features a lot of sheep, a subject I know a little about given I’m a sheep owner.” He may have worked with some of the world’s best actors and directors on huge hits, including Jurassic Park and The Piano, he may also star in the popular British television drama Peaky Blinders, but at Two Paddocks there is little evidence of this glamourous, starstudded ‘other life’. That’s where you’ll find him in the country’s uniform of red and black ‘swanny’ and gumboots. He spends as much time as he can on the farm, between making movies, preferring the movies to come around when it’s winter in Central Otago. “When it’s midwinter in Central it can be very cold with short days as well, so I do like to be somewhere warm with some agreeable people to work with.” And although his two worlds really do seem like parallel universes, in Sam’s eyes, they have plenty in common. “It is people that are the most important thing. I’m lucky enough to work with some really great people in films and also in my vineyards and that’s been the most rewarding thing for me in all of this.” www.twopaddocks.com

FOLLOWING I SIR ED’S FOOT By Melinda Collins
The spirit of exploration is strong in the Hillary family. Sir Edmund Hillary’s grandson Alex is continuing the legacy, this time by kayak, rather than tractor. We catch up with Alex about exploring Antarctica.
Do you think the spirit of exploration is something that has been handed down in the Hillary family? Without a doubt! We all have different interests and hobbies but something that really binds us is our passion and yearning for adventure. It doesn’t have to be the high alpine couloirs and cols, but any place that tests our positivity and humour; that demands determination and teamwork; places like the Waitakere Ranges, the Southern Alps and the Khumbu Himalaya. We’re stronger together because of these adventures.
THE EXHIBITION BY ALEXANDER HILLARY AND MARCO DE KRETSER IS NOW OPEN AT CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT, AS PART OF AN ANTARCTIC HERITAGE TRUST INITIATIVE.
16 6 February, 2020 Metropol
You headed down to Antarctica 61 years after your grandad arrived at the pole on a Ferguson tractor. How did the trip come about? I applied to the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s Inspiring Explorers’ Expedition programme and joined the team as the photographer. It was 61 years after my grandfather drove Kiwi farm tractors across Antarctica to the South Pole, but we went on a different kind of journey; kayaking around the Antarctic Peninsula. This meant that instead of the vast frozen deserts and barren glaciers, we navigated past icebergs, around whales and into penguin colony coves.
Your grandfather is a bit like New Zealand’s grandfather, possibly even New Zealand royalty. How important is it to you to carry on his legacy in some way? I think most New Zealanders really related to Ed; they respected and admired his determination, humility and compassion. He stood for resilience through success on Everest, he stood for preservation through his involvement and passion for national parks and forests and he stood for generosity through his philanthropic work in the Khumbu Himalaya. Growing up, I have seen the impact that his life has had on others; I’ve seen the forests now grown in the Everest area and the success of the incredible Sherpa people. I’m so proud of what Ed stood for and I hope his legacy will stand for positive change into the future. What do you think Sir Ed would have thought about your adventures? Our team had an incredible adventure in Antarctica; one that was unique and challenging in a place that Ed really cherished. He loved the idea of young people getting out and exploring. He was always encouraging that spirit of adventure in my siblings and I, even on a small scale, like climbing trees at the beach house, or around the garden. He would have been thrilled to see this awesome team of young Kiwis out exploring this incredible landscape; rising to the challenge and learning to become more resilient versions of themselves.
ANTARTIC HERITAGE TRUST - NIGEL WATSON
What does 2020 have in store for you? I have big plans for 2020, at the end of last year I climbed Ama Dablam (6985 metres) in the Nepalese Himalaya – the Matterhorn of the Himalayas and literally twice as high – and from its summit, I looked across at my next climb; Mt Everest. I’m returning in March to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps to the summit ….. here’s hoping!

Can you tell us some of the highlights for you? A journey to Antarctica is a journey filled with other-worldly experiences; we kayaked every day on inky black water that sometimes felt infinitely deep. On one particular day as the glaciers in the distance calved and crashed into the sea, that inky water that I paddled through became mottled with white beneath my kayak. We were hundreds of metres from shore so I was certain I wasn’t above rocks. The movement and colour was making my head spin for a moment until I could decipher form in the dark water… a massive flipper and tail gliding effortlessly below the thin plastic of my kayak, only three or four metres below. My heart was in my mouth as the whale moved forward and rose up through the water. I was overwhelmed with astonishment and awe. This huge female humpback whale had swum beneath me on its back and then rotated to crest the surface in front of me with a deep blow. It was a moment I’ll never forget; an absolute highlight.

Time to end domestic violence
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of reported violence against women in the world – yet accordingly to the Ministry of Social Development, 76 percent of family violence incidents are not reported to police.
A
s part of Zonta International’s campaign to stop violence against women and girls, the Zonta Club of Christchurch South recently held a fundraising breakfast at the Elms Hotel, supported by more than 100 people. The keynote speaker was Jan Logie, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Justice (domestic and sexual violence issues). Jan has worked for a number of social causes, including Women’s Refuge before entering parliament in 2011. She also has a proud history as a volunteer – for
Youthline, HELP Sexual Abuse Crisis Line, Wellington Rape Crisis Board and others. In parliament she has been a champion for people and families affected by domestic and sexual violence. She initiated a select committee inquiry into funding for specialist sexual abuse and social services, and her Workplace Protection Bill is designed to protect victims and reduce the significant economic impact of domestic violence. “We are committed to changing society, but it’s going to take all of us,” she says.
Powerfully, a true survivor in every sense of the word then took to the stage. Sharon Kerr is a Peer Support Specialist for Aviva – an organisation committed to making New Zealand violence-free through supporting social and personal
change. “What that means is I bring lived experience of overcoming family violence to my job,” Sharon says. Change is coming and it’s happening through the powerful determination of individuals and organisations like these. www.avivafamilies.org.nz

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: THE INS AND OUTS Intellectual Property (IP) can be a powerful advantage in the right hands. Metropol catches up with IP specialist and Patent Attorney Virginia Nichols from Saunders & Co Lawyers about how to use IP to your commercial advantage.
E
very business has valuable IP, but it is easy for owners or executives to overlook the opportunity to leverage those intangible assets fully for their commercial advantage. The first step is to perform an ‘IP audit’ to find out what intangible assets your company already has or may need or want. Many companies underestimate the value and commercial importance of the intangible assets they already own. IP comes in a lot of different forms, including trademarks and other brand elements, copyright in written text, technical or artistic drawings, photos and videos, know-how and inventions, processes, licences, customer lists and databases. Every company has different intangible assets, and should regularly consider their IP strategy as part of their evolving business plan.
It is important to ensure all intangible assets are correctly owned and that your trade secrets remain confidential. There should be clear contracts with employees, contractors, external providers and co-founders. Many legal disputes arise because the parties were not clear at the outset about who would own the output, or how it is to be used. This can be avoided by being proactive in getting contractual arrangements right before work starts (or as soon as possible). Certain types of IP rights are recognised by statute, which can provide a legal monopoly. Trademark registration is a very effective tool for brand protection and essential for any business involved in either exporting or overseas manufacture. Patents provide an extremely powerful protection for
any new product or process and should be given serious consideration by any innovative enterprise. The main ways to exploit these intangible assets include: • Protecting your own market position to keep competitors from copying you • Licensing others to use your IP, in exchange for an income stream • Selling some or all of your intangible assets to another company. As your business plan evolves over time, your IP strategy should do the same. Leveraging intangible assets can be extremely useful when expanding into new markets. Now is the time to maximise your IP potential. For a noobligations discussion about your current IP strategy, call Virginia on 03 963 1463. www.saunders.co.nz Metropol 6 February, 2020 19

What drew you to the General Manager role with Showbiz Christchurch? I have spent a huge amount of my life in musical theatre; you could say it’s in my DNA! I’ve always felt at home in Christchurch and I’m really excited by the city’s rebuild, so when the opportunity arose to become a part of the musical theatre community at Showbiz Christchurch, I grabbed it with both hands.
New name in Showbiz He’s lived and breathed musical theatre for most of his working life. But for Paul Christ, the opportunity to come to Christchurch and take the reins of our local operatic society was a dream come true.
Can you tell us about your background in musical theatre? I first became involved in music as a conductor in the classical symphonic world. My first professional musical was actually My Fair Lady (the first show of the 2020 Saunders & Co Season playing from 3-18 April) and for 15 years I was Musical Director and Supervisor for numerous West End shows, including Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera , The Producers and Mary Poppins. I was the Musical Director for Elaine Paige in The King & I at the London Palladium, and Disney’s worldwide Musical Supervisor for the Broadway production of Disney’s Beauty & The Beast, before moving to Vienna to work where the arts are really well subsidised and given huge importance. What are you looking forward to the most going forward? I’ve been very fortunate to travel throughout my career and see what musicals are being produced around the world, so I’m incredibly excited about what could be coming our way! There are some exceptional shows coming out of Broadway and the West End; we’re in talks to bring that excitement to Christchurch and make more worldclass theatre, utilising world-class local talent. How exciting is the 2020 Showbiz Christchurch line-up? It’s really exciting! These are exceptional shows and each one has some personal connection. My Fair Lady set a Broadway record when it opened in 1956 and its revivals have all been huge hits. Chess in Concert in association with the CSO (19-21 June), is re-visiting the work of the ABBA boys, with international hits like I Know Him So Well and One Night in Bangkok. Buddy Holly had so many number one hits that anyone can come to Buddy (11-26 September) and have a sing along and a good time, which is a theme of all the shows – everyone can enjoy them. www.showbiz.org.nz

OPEN DAY
Gauguin in Aotearoa
An exhibition showcasing the works of artists Gabriel Heimler and Anna Proc is soon to open at McAtamney Gallery in Geraldine.
T
itled Gauguin in Aotearoa, the exhibition features a series of paintings inspired by a time when French post-impressionist artist, Paul Gauguin had a ten day stopover in Auckland in 1895,
en route to Tahiti. Gauguin visited the Auckland Museum and, discovering the then newly-opened Māori Art wing, immersed himself in studying and making sketches of the artworks on display.
“Gauguin was a worldcitizen; he was half-Peruvian and half-French,” Proc explains. “He felt himself to be already cosmopolitan and, although he lived in France for some years, he didn’t feel at home

there. Gauguin was searching for a newness, for diversity… he dreamt to find an optimal inspirational place and Tahiti seemed an idyllic destination for his creativity.” Proc says that, like Gauguin, she and Heimler are from Europe and have been searching for a place that is new and diverse yet also rooted in its history. “Our inspiration is to ask ourselves what would Gauguin paint if he were here in New Zealand now? Our work also asks can we choose another country and represent it; interpret this new land – our fascination with Māori culture and that underlying female presence? Gauguin’s paintings of women are rather mysterious; our big point of difference is that certainly, we want to celebrate and show the beauty and importance of women, but integral to our work is to make them contemporary – of today’s world.” Heimler and Proc have been painting collaboratively for 10 years. They work in tandem, from large wall murals through to diptychs. Gauguin in Aotearoa poses many questions, such as why alongside the Polynesian women featured in the series, there are also blue-eyed blondes, sports cars and, somewhat surreally, Heimler, Proc and Gauguin chatting in a doorway! “In sum, our art is a reflection of our quest to gain a deeper understanding of our single and united selves,” Proc says, “Our work is not didactic; rather, we raise questions. Our process is as much one of exploration as of discovery.” Find McAtamney Gallery and Design Store at 40a Talbot Street, Geraldine. Phone 027 305 3000 or email carolyn@ mcatamneygallery.co.nz.

Female entrepreneur event kicks off
A number of New Zealand’s leading lights in the purpose-driven entrepreneurial space are coming together to offer Kiwi women thought provoking, possibly lifechanging, action packed events in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
T
he March events are guaranteed to inspire, engage, connect and help participants better understand their true purpose and how important this is, not only for everyday living, but specifically for entrepreneurship. With ‘purpose’ listed by the New Zealand Institute of Directors as the second most important issue for
directors in 2020, international businesswoman and founder of Entrepreneurial Women with Purpose, Catherine van der Meulen was inspired to run the event series for current and would-be Kiwi entrepreneurs. She had met many during her business travels since moving to New Zealand from Sydney last year. Each event is jam-packed
with keynote speakers, networking opportunities, hands-on sessions, including a passion with purpose workshop, networking connector session and a range of inspiring speakers from Kiwi female entrepreneurs walking the talk. “There are more Kiwi women in New Zealand than ever before launching their own businesses and this event
series will champion these women, offering advice, training and coaching to help them reach the next level,” explains specialist trainer and coach, and B Corp Ambassador for New Zealand, Tim Jones from ‘Grow Good’. “The Entrepreneurial Women with Purpose events will also inspire and support women who need help taking their first steps to turn a business dream into a reality.” The Christchurch event is being held Wednesday, 11 March at the PwC Centre, Level 4, 60 Cashel Street from 9am-1pm. Tickets cost $150, plus booking fee, with $50 from the sale of each ticket going to the UN Women Aotearoa New Zealand to support the Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Pacific.

For as long as he can remember, James Rabbette, of Rabbette Ltd, has been involved in the building industry.
rowing up with a father who was a builder meant James loved spending almost every school holiday on site with his dad and, after starting a New Zealand Diploma in Business at Otago Polytechnic, he soon realised working indoors just wasn’t for him. He began doing outside labouring jobs before starting Rabbette Ltd at just 21! “I spent the next five years working by myself before taking on my first apprentice,” he says. “Now, after 15 years, we’ve built up
a fantastic team of guys who love masonry trades, get along really well, work hard for the team and take real pride in their work.” The business has now grown to include wife Alana who manages the accounts, three tradesmen, a third-year apprentice, a first-year apprentice and a labourer. “It’s hard to attract young people to take up brick and block laying, stone masonry, tiling and plastering trades, but it’s an extremely rewarding job; hard and physical, but really satisfying.” Rabbette Ltd covers Central Otago and the Southern Lakes area, with a special interest in masonry houses, built completely out of concrete blocks. “It provides amazing insulation,” he says. “People think concrete is cold because in the 60s they used to strap and line the inside of the block. Nowadays, the insulation is on the outside, which means the thermal qualities are exceptional. Having built two for myself, I find them extremely warm and comfortable to live in. “They hold the heat in winter and can’t burn or rot, so it’s a no-brainer, really.” For more information, email rab.bricky@gmail.com.

fashion Classic Blue Meet Pantone’s Colour of 2020 – Classic Blue. A solid, dependable hue, classic blue needs no introduction other than to say it’s a welcome shade to start the new decade off nicely. So, how to wear? Well, those new to blue should start by incorporating the shade via pops of colour – a neckerchief, sunglasses and handbag, perhaps – or try a monochrome moment by pairing with their existing white or black closet staples.
Bold Moves By Clementine Page
The new decade is well and truly here, and it’s time to dial up the boldness with colours that are loud and proud. We’ve sought out the top three most glorious colours trends reigning supreme in 2020.
Biking Red Forever a fiery hue that exudes confidence and powerful feminine energy, red shines bright against any skin tone. This year the fashion world will enjoy ‘biking red’, a deep, warm ruby shade with hints of purple and brown – the perfect addition to your existing autumn colour palette. Workwear inspiration: how about high-waisted trousers cinched with a belt and paired with a creamy blouse and heels… Saffron Yellow Always a reliable spring shade, yellow manages to hold its place on the catwalks for another year (we’re certainly not complaining!) Elevate any otherwise plain ensemble (and your mood!) with accessories in this sunshine shade, or go all out by wearing saffron yellow from head-to-toe – a jumpsuit or midi dress might just be your answer. As always, if you’re stuck for inspiration… let the runways be your guide.

This year ‘luminous’ is the hottest buzzword in the beauty world and we’re all about getting our glow on. Check out four ways to get your glow on.
Maintaining a good skincare regime is key to fresh, glowing skin. Skincare experts recommend double cleansing before bed to ensure all makeup and dirt is removed. Don’t forget to tone, moisturise (AM and PM) and exfoliate too! Exfoliating two to three times per week helps to get rid of blackheads, dead skin cells and other skin impurities. Investing in a quality retinol serum will help banish breakouts, reduce wrinkles, stimulate collagen and promote cellular turnover – all the tricks in the book to get the glow of your dreams! Just remember to apply sunscreen daily (though you should do anyway) as retinoids increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Ahh, the trusty makeup product invented solely for glowing skin - highlighter! Liquid highlighters are picking up the pace in 2020 and it’s no longer just about the cheekbones… now highlighting begins with the base. Radiance drops and tinted moisturisers with a glowing finish are two such products that can be applied before makeup to give you the glow you’re lusting after.

Healthy, luminous skin is more than just, well, skin deep. You’ve heard it before and it cannot be over-emphasised – water is your skin’s best friend… but plastic is not, so ditch the traditional water bottle and opt for glass or BPA-free plastic, at the very least.

Time to shine By Jess Murray
Ever want to look like you’re in a hair care commercial? We’ve pulled together some of our hottest tips for hair that is both smooth and shiny.
OPT FOR OILS: a little goes a long way with argon oil, so be sure to only use two to five drops! Start by warming the oil up – to do this simply rub your hands together after placing the drops on your palms. Finally, run your hands through damp, freshly-washed hair and massage the oil into your scalp. Apply two to three times a week to ensure silky smooth hair. A FINE SHINE: for our readers with finer hair this is the tip for you. The answer is three words and some beautiful alliteration: boar bristle brushes. It’s hard to deny the effectiveness of a hair tip that has been around since the 1800s and is so easy to implement... just use it like a normal brush. OH MY OMEGA: Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids help towards hair health (which will contribute to its silkiness and shine). Load up on fish such as mackerel or sardines. If you’re not a big fan of seafood, there’s other ways to get your omega fix – fish oil capsules are a great alternative.

sustainable products and treatments on the market, something Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has embraced wholeheartedly. All of the skin products at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic are made from natural ingredients and even have a vegan tick of approval. The treatments are also natural, using light, radiofrequency, water, ultrasound and cold temperatures to achieve impressive results. Intense pulsed light is used to remove sun-damage and broken capillaries. Radio-frequency lifts and tightens the skin (fabulous around the eyes). Sterile saline water removes the surface dead cells and leaves the skin looking hydrated and fresh. Focused ultrasound tightens up deep tissue – great for jowls and necks. Cryolipolysis (cold) freezes fat causing the fat cell to die – great for mummy tummies, muffin tops, double chins and inner thighs. Even Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) is a natural product, along with dermal fillers (used for lifting and plumping the face and skin), which are made from chains of Hyaluronic Acid that are present in our skin naturally. www.skinrejuvenationclinic.co.nz

If boosting your confidence is on your list for the New Year, take time to set some goals for your skin. Most of us would love skin that feels and looks a bit younger and, thanks to advances in technology throughout the past decades, there are plenty of treatments to boost your complexion, improve texture and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles (without going under the knife!). Viora Skin Tightening is one of the most popular anti-ageing treatments at Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa. It can help
with tightening the skin on the face, particularly around the eyes and jawline, as well as on the body, such as loose ‘mummy tummy’ skin and cellulite. The treatment works by using radio frequency to stimulate new collagen formation and facilitate the reduction of fat cell volume, resulting in improved and tighter skin texture. Viora Skin Tightening is completely safe, painless and clinically proven, with no danger of skin response (unlike with laser treatments), and each treatment takes just 30 to 60 minutes.

Sneak it in Flat sneakers – there’s no need to unlace when bounding into the boardroom. Sneakers with flirty summer dresses through to long maxi skirts all add bounce to our stride. Note: sneakers with track pants are straight sports girl, so beautify the bottom half to sporty-luxe them up. Black or white are a wardrobe staple to pair with most outfits. However, pick a complementary or contrasting colour, metallic or embellishment for even more kickass cool.

Sport a pair of heels Wearing designer track pants? They desire a cute pair of heels to take them to Hollywood heights. It’s all about juxtaposition! Pointy toes peeping out from track pant hems is relaxed attitude. It is about blurring the lines of leisurewear. Change it up Pair an edgy over-sized jacket with slinky bike shorts. Baggy tops with baggy bottoms are lax rather than luxe, so pair a fitted top with a floaty pant, or oversized sweater with tight tapered trackies.
Nearly 90% of New Zealanders have some form of gum disease. 30% may end up losing their teeth from it.
Keep the cool to look cooler Along with bare midriffs, perforated materials and edgy laser cut-out designs are so hot right now. That extra airflow has the bonus of keeping us from overheating as we dash about our day. The right recipe Tempting – but head to toe super-sporty luscious luxe is just a tad too tempest. It’s easy enough though to tone it to perfection with a mix of textures and an item or two from our current fashion staples. Dress it up dress it down From the collecting the kids to dinner and dancing - transformer luxe is easy as. A blazer with rolled up sleeves, belts, handbags, bling and scarlet lippy - take them on, or off. A Wonder Woman quick change and it’s off to the next mission looking a million dollars.

Comfort is queen The goal is to be eye-catching, but the reason we are secretly in love with luxe is the comfy, cosy feeling we don’t want to change out of. A pair of Lorna Jane track pants, that feel silky soft and buttery are worth every dollar. Fitting and stretchy means they won’t linger on the wardrobe side-lines. Even natural-based fabrics are designed these days with flattering but fitting flex.

New Year, new you! Although New Year’s resolutions come in all different shapes, sizes and styles, it seems many of them lean towards health and wellness. After all, healthy body, healthy mind, right? By Melinda Collins
S
o if you’re looking to make 2020 your healthiest year yet, we’ve got the inside scoop from women’s health expert, author and speaker, Holistic Nutritionist Jessica Giljam Brown BSc, from Wellness by Jessica. Can you tell us a bit about your personal journey to better health and wellbeing and how this came about? I was diagnosed with chronic pain at age 17 after an accident and my journey began there. It wasn’t until later that I really found out how much control I had when it came to looking after myself and healing. At university, I learned about the science of the body, the chemistry of food and the reactions that take place, but it wasn’t until several years later, once I began working, that I learned about the immense healing power of food. There is a vast array of options outside of the traditional medical matrix that can help heal the body. It took a lot of trial and error to find exactly the right balance that worked for me; how best to reduce the inflammation that was triggering the pain, which nutrients I needed to boost to help support my mood and what steps to put in place when my pain did flare up again. Since my early days in clinic, I have grown immensely and have been very lucky to have some really great mentors who have opened

my eyes to the wider world of both natural and mainstream medicine. I enjoy working right in the middle of natural and mainstream medicine, and pulling treatment options from both sides alongside my clients’ GPs and specialists. How critical is healthy eating to overall health and wellbeing? Your food supplies the energy and nutrients you need in order for every single function in the body to happen. Without energy and nutrients, your body can’t function as it should, so it is absolutely critical to eat well in order to function well. Food should always be the foundation when making health changes and trying to resolve issues, with sleep and stress management being on par too. What are some of your favourite foods and meals that contribute to health and wellbeing? Real food provides us with the best density of nutrients, so I try to make sure my diet is predominantly real foods, rather than processed. Green leafy vegetables are one of my favourite food groups because they provide so many nutrients. Kale, cabbage, lettuces, spinach, silverbeet and herbs contain vitamins A, B, C and K as well as magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium and lots of fibre. These nutrients support all of
our processes in our body. Fat rich nuts and seeds are something I encourage everyone to increase their intake of. The low-fat era has thankfully ended, but there still seems to be some residual fear around nuts and seeds. These foods are rich in heart-healthy fats, vitamin E, fibre, zinc, B6 and magnesium. These nutrients are particularly important for healthy sex hormones and skin health. Nuts and seeds provide valuable fats to our meals to help us feel more satisfied, keeping us feeling fuller for longer. You take quite a holistic approach to healthy living, so it’s not all about just eating well. What are some of the other key areas we should be focusing on when it comes to looking after ourselves? The body is affected by stress,
What’s your biggest piece of advice when we start struggling with our resolutions or fall off the bandwagon completely? Focus on getting ‘more’! It’s so much easier for the human brain to want ‘more’, so play to your strengths. Instead of ‘eat less chocolate’, change the goal ‘to eat more fruit’, or instead of ‘lose 5kgs’, set goals like ‘increase veggie intake to seven handfuls each day’, ‘walk 15-30 minutes per day’, ‘take a filling lunch so I don’t have to buy lunch each day’. What does 2020 have in store for you? I am really excited about 2020, there is a lot happening for me both professionally and personally. I am really proud to have a team behind me to help me bring all my ideas to life. We have lots of women’s health courses coming this year to help women resolve their hormone concerns and some couples’ fertility courses to help prep couples for a healthy pregnancy. To stay up to date with what is happening, you can follow along via Facebook and Instagram.

sleep, environment, connections and relationships and movement, so all of these areas need to be focused on alongside what you eat in order to be truly well. I work with my clients on all of these areas, pulling in extra expertise as needed. I find that stress management and sleep improvement is what is most needed for the majority of people and is something I always address. I encourage clients to set up relaxation practices that work for them, it could be meditation, a short yoga sequence, breathing exercises, walking, reading, or dance. I also help them set up a sleep hygiene routine that helps them get more restorative sleep. Once stress and sleep are better managed, I find that people can make far better choices about what they eat.

Metropol caught up with fertility specialist, Dr Pete Benny, who has just returned to New Zealand as Genea Oxford Fertility’s Medical Director, about the options available for making families.
What attracted you to working in this field? I’d always enjoyed science, particularly learning about endocrinology (hormones). The field of fertility applies science to helping people have a family. Many women have spent their entire lives trying not to get pregnant, then they’re shocked when they can’t easily have a baby. What are some of the reasons why we’re struggling to get pregnant these days? The prevalence of infertility in each age group is the same as 20 years ago, or longer. The difference now is that people are delaying pregnancy, so the age they are trying to get pregnant has increased. In the past, there wasn’t the technology available to help. Now there is.
What are some of the biggest myths when it comes to fertility? A major fallacy is that if people try IVF, it will be instantly successful. Many people believe they can delay starting a family because of their faith in IVF. Sadly it doesn’t always work. Another common myth is that infertility is primarily a female problem. We know now that it is just as likely to stem from male issues. How long should couples wait before they seek medical advice? If you’re under 35 and there is no obvious problem, seek advice if you’re not pregnant within a year of trying to have a baby. If you’re over 35, see someone within six months. But always seek advice if something just doesn’t feel right or you are worried.
health
Making Families
Should we be thinking about fertility well before we actively want to get pregnant? I think we should all be more aware of our fertility and the things that impact upon it, particularly lifestyle and environment. We should have a plan for our lives and if having a family is important, then allow time for that to happen. What are the treatment options available in New Zealand for fertility? Treatments depend on the cause of infertility. The first issue to consider is your lifestyle. For example, poor nutrition or too much stress won’t increase your chances of becoming pregnant. Other issues, such as endometriosis or lack of ovulation, may need to be addressed to allow conception. There are various options available including IVF to fertilise the eggs; fertilisation using microinjection (ICSI), or identifying the right embryos with PGT-A. If we can’t treat someone with IVF, then we explore donor eggs or sperm, donor embryos or even surrogacy. We can also recover sperm directly from the testes, if necessary. What are the benefits of nonmedical approaches in increasing the chance of pregnancy – such as relaxation techniques and meditation? It’s difficult to prove that these methods treat infertility. They do however help people deal with the delays that are often associated with treatment and may give people time to achieve a natural conception. Such techniques can also help people deal with the stresses of not achieving a pregnancy. What’s the most fulfilling part of what you do? It is watching people grow, while achieving their goal of having a family. I get a huge amount of joy from seeing them fulfil their desire for a family.

Whether it’s a comfortable three decades away or in a few short years, it’s tempting to put off planning for retirement and facing fiscal reality.
H
ow much of a nest egg we really need can be subjective, varying vastly depending on situations and expectations. A figure plucked out by a few professionals is $300,000 per person
1 2
or $400,000 per couple. And then there are some experts that say we need a million or two to relish our twilight years. Ironically both can be right. We all have unique needs, dreams, and fates.
Do the maths All incoming funds and likely outgoing expenses meld to make the final pot of gold. Calculate incomes from weekly New Zealand Superannuation, other pensions, tenants, boarders, projected KiwiSaver funds and other investments. Will the mortgage be paid off? Will there be lump sums from cashed-up investments such as property or the fine art collection? Whether it’s a flowchart of likelihoods or a list of outgoings and incomings, it pays to put pen to paper and update continually.

live well
Plump up the pension pot By Tracey Edwardes
Decide on your lifestyle Some people might be content living off a well-tended vege garden, for others it’s banqueting on a river cruise. Lavish or frugal – or indeed somewhere in between – decide what lifestyle fits with reality, and work toward a healthy dollar sum. Expect the unexpected Unplanned medical costs, helping the children out financially, global events or even new opportunities, being overprepared brings peace of mind. If forthcoming inheritance is in the mix, be aware anything can happen. Security is planning for the worst case scenario. How much to save The closer we are to retirement, the larger percentage we should be stashing away from our salaries. Invest wisely in purchases that increase in value or will make money. For example, will this latest computer help increase my income? As leisure days loom faster we are more likely to work smarter than harder. Regardless, every little amount will help and it’s never too late. The bucket list Retirement buys the time, but not necessarily the bucks. Wish-lists invariably come with a price tag and they are generally better crossed off early, while we are fit and able. Make a list of the ‘mustdos’, and ‘would like to do’, and ferret away the required funds. Get advice from all angles Take on board all the workable tips from financial advisers, success stories from happy retirees, an accountant who knows your spending habits and online research. The website www.sorted.org.nz has useful advice and current pension rates. Seeing retirement as an exciting staging of life makes the saving up for the adventure a pleasure.
Downsizing Many plan to downsize upon retiring to plump up the pension pot, but when it comes to the crunch, it might be difficult to sacrifice creature comforts. Living frugally in a nicer home might appeal to one, and a humble abode and overseas trips to others.

biodynamic cultivation for many years, the vineyard is dedicated to protecting the ecosystem and respects the balance between soil, plants and humans,” François says. “As per the Lanson style, this wine doesn’t undergo malolactic fermentation with the long maturation period offsetting the high levels of malic acid in the champagne.” In keeping with the new product’s commitment to sustainability, the bottles are light-weight, the labels are made of recycled paper and the champagne is also veganfriendly and vegetarian. Lanson Organic Champagne is only available exclusively in Christchurch and sold in two on-premise accounts and one fine wine retailer across the city. “We are proud to be one of only two accounts in NZ to be selling Lanson Organic Champagne with the opportunity to share with our guests,” Amazonita General Manager Josh Peat says. “The wine expresses fresh, fruity and elegant notes which we have paired with the best organic produce. Chocolate Trufles
Truffles are an easy recipe that will reap many brownie points from your Valentine this year, especially when you personalise them with their favourite flavour combo.
OPTIONAL FLAVOUR FUSIONS Mint leaves (chopped with stems removed, about 1 cup) Cinnamon and cardamom (1 cinnamon stick, 2 cardamom pods) Amaretto (1-2 tablespoons) Espresso powder (1 tablespoon) and coffee liqueur (1 tablespoon) Hazelnut essence (1/2 teaspoon) and toasted chopped hazelnuts Orange oil (1/8 teaspoon) and orange liqueur (1-2 tablespoons) OPTIONAL COATINGS Truffle coatings Cocoa powder Finely chopped hazelnuts Finely chopped almonds Chocolate sprinkles Drizzle with melted chocolate METHOD In a small, heavy saucepan bring the heavy whipping cream to a simmer (stir and scrape down the sides with a spatula every few minutes). If you are using one of the optional flavour fusions, stir it in with the cream (and ignore vanilla in the next step). If adding mint or other solids, after the cream simmers, remove from heat and let seep for an hour. Strain away any solids and return the cream to a simmer before proceeding with the recipe. Ganache: Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place it in a separate bowl. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and add the vanilla. Allow to stand for a few minutes then stir until smooth. Allow the ganache to cool, then place in the refrigerator for two hours. Use a teaspoon to roll out balls of the ganache. Roll in your hands quickly (as it will melt from the heat of your hands), then roll them in your optional coatings. Place the truffles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and put them in the refrigerator overnight.

The happy dairy Sue Trafford of Charing Cross Cheesery says it felt like it could be a “cool adventure” when she and her husband Guy were invited to become part of the new Riverside Market in Christchurch. “To make the transition from food producers to food retailers was a real leap of faith, but it’s been amazing and so much better than we expected.”
S
ue says that apart from providing the best in gourmet foods, Riverside
Market has a good educative aspect. “With our artisan cheeses, for example,
customers can chat with us about what they like and take advantage of our in-depth
knowledge to find something that’s completely new to them and they’d never find anywhere else.” Purveyors of their own homegrown sheep’s milk, yoghurt and cheeses – of which their feta, halloumi, and the smoothly moreish labneh are proving irresistible to cheese lovers, Charing Cross Cheesery also showcases other South Island cheese and dairy brands. “Being ethical, sustainable, keeping it local and building strong supplier relationships is important to us,” Sue says. “It’s what being a true, traditional cheese monger is all about.” A recent addition to their dairy fare is – wait for it – sheep’s milk gelato! Coming in scrumptious flavours such as Amarena Cherry, Citrus, Coffee and Rich Chocolate, customers are more than curious to try it. “We’re the only people in New Zealand making sheep’s milk gelato. Once you taste it, there’s no going back!” Find Charing Cross Cheesery at Riverside Market on the corner of Lichfield Street and Oxford Terrace. www.charingcrosssheepdairy.co.nz

Blue Bayou By Tracey Edwardes
We’ve long had a love affair with the colour blue and in 2020 it’s just as popular as ever. We check out how to work this watery hue into the home.
B
lue is a cool colour on the palette wheel, but one which warms the heart. Mysterious inky depths of French navy and indigo through to the softness of powdery baby blue, there is purpose and place for its mood-inducing effect in every room. Blue buddies up well with other shades. Blue and white is a traditional combination with historical beginnings on exotic palace walls and tiles, to classic crockery patterns and gingham cloth. Dark blue and white in a kitchen is a sophisticated alternative to the smart black
60 6 February, 2020 Metropol
and white theme. Blue and green can be harmonised to copycat nature. A blue and purple blend is pure lavenderpatch lusciousness. Whereas blue and yellow evokes Italian themes. Pairing bold blues with orange, fuchsia or hot pink saturates the shade. Adding sandy shades as a neutral softens blue. Bright blue adds adventure to kids’ rooms, when paired with other primary bolds. Pale blue with silver or gold is so palace of Versailles, and is pure art deco decadence against cobalt blue. In the bathroom, blue creates a watery playground and in
the living room, an expansive airy feel. Peace and serenity abound in a bedroom of blues – a restful, natural background. French blue is always chic – think dusky denim and cornflower, with blue on blue textures perhaps merging with whites and greys. Washed out grey-blues are perfect in a home that follows a neutral palate. Blue greens of the aqua palate fit in anywhere. Certain shades of blue in the wrong lighting, or without natural light, can feel a little cold. Just like the sky, blue comes alive against the sun rays. Dark shades ironically
make small rooms appear larger, as the depth merges the corners. However too much expanse of navy in a large room can be too sombre. In the living room, especially with large windows, blue merges with the sky or blends with watery view. Jazz up a beige carpet with a sumptuous blue rug. Blue glass for water vessels or ornaments conjure up images of Greece, a place where they love to paint the walls and floors in this very Mediterranean colour – even with all that sea and sky they’re blessed with. But we all just can’t get enough of blue.

Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd
New Year, new design looks Metropol catches up with award-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong about how to maximise the potential in your investment through renovating.
W
hen you delve into the reasons why we renovate, it’s about finally getting the opportunity to have our homes align with how we want to live, Angelique explains. “When you look at the reasons to renovate, it is very
clear. When we sign up to sell our houses, we have advertising fees, auction costs, selling costs and then moving costs… this all adds up, so why not stay where you are and put that extra $20$30,000 into your own pocket and renovate?” When it comes to renovating,
the world really is your oyster. “A new kitchen, bathroom, paint; wallpaper, lighting, adding a room – anything is possible.” So what is this style maven seeing coming through in interiors in 2020? “Our homes are getting a more international feel with lighting available in beautiful finishes like steels, coppers and gold,” Angelique says. “There’s also beautiful new stones in colours we haven’t seen in New Zealand before and from all over the world, such as greens, greys and taupes. “If you are looking at Pinterest and at all the designs and the new products available, it becomes very exciting.” There’s plenty of product options and at both ends of the pricing spectrum, so there
really is something for everyone when it comes to renovating. “International brands and also our lower end suppliers are bringing out products that are exciting when you’re looking at upgrading and renovating,” she says. “It’s so exciting to see the stunning new products coming in from suppliers. Angelique is currently working on two large renovations and we are looking forward to profiling these projects in the 5 March issue of Metropol. “Over the next couple of issues of Metropol I am going to be touching on renovation work; how to make your renovations easier and how to ‘do it once and do it right’.” Phone 03 356 2636 or check them out on Instagram armstronginteriorsltd. www.armstronginteriors.co.nz

MASTERING THE HILL Nelson Mandela once said “after climbing a great hill one only finds there are many more hills to climb,” and actually, that’s just the way that Jim the Builder likes it. Providing construction excellence in Christchurch, the team has been building on the hills for more than 25 years.
im Stenberg, Principle of Jim the Builder, says they approach the issues thrown up on hill sites “by taking a practical approach and by being involved in the project from the start if possible”. “We talk with the owners, architects, and engineers to come up with a practical solution that will meet the client’s budget and enable us to build their dream.” Planning and good management is key to their approach; it helps them deal with weather, erosion and drainage problems that are common on hill sites. “Throw in our many years of knowledge of how to tackle a job, and nothing beats us,” Jim says. “In fact, the more difficult the build
is, the more exciting the project will be. That’s why we do jobs that are not just your cookie cutter home – they really challenge our team and push them to deliver an outstanding result. Our latest Master Builders Award for the Best House in Christchurch in the $1.5-$2 million category was for one such home.” Experts in all foundation types, the team makes each specific engineering design a reality. “With rocky hill sites we tackle each individually; rock type makes a difference. Involving us early means we can help with house position so it structurally ticks all the boxes, sits in its most cost-effective position with regard to excavation and maximises the view.” www.jimthebuilder.co.nz

On the out By Clementine Page
In the warmer months it seems we spend as much time outdoors as we do in. So why not open up those patio doors and make the most of outside life by creating a haven for alfresco living?
F
irst things first – it’s important to prioritise investing in quality outdoor furniture and accessories; think of your outdoor area as an extension of your living space and style accordingly. And remember, comfort and function are two of the most important attributes conducive to relaxation and entertaining, and should be at the forefront of your furniture decisions. When it comes to seating, hanging furniture is bigger than ever in 2020 – this year’s trends look to modular
and dynamic styles such as swinging day beds/sofas and classy hammocks. Opt for weather resistant and anti-fade fabrics for all outdoor seating, and ensure there are enough side tables to accommodate for drinks and nibbles. Premium umbrellas - particularly cantilever ones - are perfect for maximising your outdoor space and providing that much-needed shade from New Zealand’s searing sunshine. For 2020, large swathes of singular materials are out and mixed materials are in. Don’t
be afraid of experimenting with multiple metals – copper, brass, aluminium and chrome are the types you’ll want to take advantage of. Choose natural materials in earthy, neutral tones to complement surroundings – cane, bamboo and wicker pieces are expected to gain further momentum in 2020 for this very reason. Living features such as vertical walls of plants and hanging herb gardens give you plenty of extra space for growing your favorite plants while also serving as
an attractive addition to your landscape. Succulents are back on trend and are a lowmaintenance option either potted or arranged in hanging planters. Don’t forget - kitchens are no longer restricted to the interior of your abode. Modern alfresco dining calls for more than just a solo BBQ and a dining table; hot plates set into a stone island make cooking - and entertaining - easier than ever, while a traditional pizza oven is an asset that can be used all year round.

Indian Inspiration By Clementine Page
Does the new decade call for a revamped interior? In 2020 it seems we’re yearning for that new, fresh feeling - so it’s not surprising Indianinspired interiors are reigning supreme in the world of home trends. “A pool can mean a lifetime of enjoyment, it's our job to make sure it is.”
T
he colour schemes and decor of other countries and cultures have influenced interior design trends for some time now – take Scandi-chic for example, or the intricacies of Middle Eastern decor. This year one such trend welcomes the eclecticism of Indian interior design - Pinterest searches for ‘Indian living rooms’ have skyrocketed more than 2000 percent as people begin to move away from the crisp and clean Nordic styles towards vibrant and festive interiors. Interior experts recommend beginning with a neutral shade as a base - think the palest yellow, beige or washed out brown - and opting for rich, earthy colours like
terracottas, ochres and spiced reds for your focal elements; you can’t go wrong by using the spices India is renowned for as inspiration. Decorative accents like sculptures, rustic earthenware, poufs and finely woven rugs all draw on the raw beauty of Indian interiors. Choose tarnished metals like brass, copper and gold, add cultural richness with dark, exotic woods like ebony and rosewood – particularly those engraved with authentic Indian patterns and floral designs – and swap out your simple white linen and block colour cushions for brightly coloured, intricately patterned fabrics – it’s all in the details.

Space to stash Many homes don’t have a dedicated mudroom, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need a place to stash your stuff right after you walk in the door. his soft and understated scheme, with walls in Resene Moonlight and floors in Resene Grey Olive, looks warm and inviting to guests. The vintage bench offers a cheerful surprise, painted in Resene Chorus Line and Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta, and offers seating for those heading out to tie their shoes with plenty of space underneath for painted baskets to keep footwear that’s waiting to be worn out of sight. The hooks are handmade using a small piece of pine and painted in Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta – to match the picture frame and bench legs.
Background is Resene Grey Olive and A4 drawdown paint swatches (from top to bottom) are in Resene Moonlight, Resene Influential and Resene Chorus Line. The kete basket bag is painted Resene Influential.

driveways, lawns and creating completely new gardens. “I’m told I have a very good eye for detail and symmetry. That’s why I love paving, but because one of my hobbies is building timber furniture, I am also passionate about using timber in gardens to fashion pergolas, screens, fencing and decking.” Carl’s pavement designs are bespoke and beautiful, ranging from perfect straight lines, to sweeping koru-shaped patterns. All paving, patio builds and other concrete works are completed to professional topquality standards by masonry craftsmen. Decks, pergolas, raised garden beds and fencing are all simple, yet stylish ways Carl and the team can transform bare landscapes into modern, appealing spaces to entertain, relax and enjoy. He also has a deep appreciation for New Zealand’s flora and fauna and is passionate about introducing natives into all the gardens he designs and constructs. focussed systems and practices in place. At Allfrey + South, we approach each new project with the same high level of care and attention. We are committed to ensuring everyone can access our
to draft a brief from scratch and send it through to us. We also like to meet directly with clients when presenting design concepts, as we believe the best architecture evolves out of a personalised process. There are exceptions to the rule but, where possible, regular face-to-face meetings are always a key part of how we work with clients. If this involves having to take a flight or two to meet with them, then that certainly presents no barrier for us. It only requires a little flexibility on our part to accommodate a day or two travel out of the office, (and we always make sure to offset our carbon emissions). Logistics are a big part of the equation for designing at a distance. We like to seek out good relationships with builders, consultants and local councils at the locations where we will be working to make sure we have a sound appreciation of associated build costs, as well as local planning rules and regulations. Ideally, we also try to source local office space where we can meet with those involved in the project. Sometimes we work not just with distant sites but also with ‘distant’ clients who live elsewhere in New Zealand or even overseas. Having robust processes in place, including good communication plans, ensures design work can proceed smoothly, no matter where either site or client is located. www.allso.co.nz

unique style of architecture, regardless of site location. While we are based in Christchurch, we can design for sites throughout New Zealand. Wherever the site, the fundamental steps required to achieve inspiring results remain the same. We do not treat a project involving a distant site any differently than a site close at hand. In either scenario, site visits are of key importance in order to gain first-hand experience of conditions such as sun and wind exposure, local weather and other factors that could influence design decisions. Equally important is the need to gain a clear understanding of the client’s priorities and their lifestyle aspirations. We also try to keep in mind architectural vernacular, as this can sometimes vary quite significantly from region to region. Not all design work at a distance involves new home projects. For example, some people may require help to upgrade or update an existing holiday home. Again, our process involves getting to know and understand what’s on site and spending time with the client to ensure they get the best possible result. While much can be achieved online or through video-conferencing, we find there is no substitute for meeting with clients in person as they fine-tune their brief. We would never expect a client

Transforming Kitchens
While the iconic M.F. Turnbull has been the go-to destination for surfacing in Christchurch for more than 30 years now, ‘Turnbulls’ has always been ahead of the curve with its longstanding reuse, repair and recycle ethos.
T
his year the longstanding company is further enhancing its green credentials, working with suppliers to start phasing out solvent-based products in favour of waterborne applications. “We are very focussed on moving forward with this, this year,” Director Monique Turnbull says. “It’s so much better for the environment and for our operations team.” There is an in-house saying at Turnbulls; ‘If you think it could
be spray finished, give us a call because it probably can’. Making over kitchens by resurfacing cabinetry is still hugely popular. “People realise that they don’t need to do a full replacement, they can make a radical change, a shade adjustment, or simply freshen the existing colour. They save themselves money and, of course, volume going to landfill,” Monique says. Every age of kitchen can be given a new life by Turnbulls; the team does kitchens from all eras
– everything from the 70s and 80s to very recently installed kitchens where an owner doesn’t like the colour. The overall trend is to go lighter; 1990s kitchens in pinks, greens, or blues are going into neutrals or whites for resale or for new owners, while timber can receive a paint finish to brighten the room. While Turnbulls can strip back surfaces, it is not usually necessary. “We can recolour any type of kitchen surface that manufacturers can make,”
Monique says. “Even doors where the plastic coating is breaking down, we can remove the coating and apply the colour you want to the underlying substrate.” Resurfacing old furniture is a favourite; a client will bring in an unusual piece; it might have lovely proportions and be beautifully made but the appearance no longer suits. Refinished in a bright colour it can be a real showstopper, or it could go out the door and start a whole new life with a shabby chic-style distressed finish. Working with interior designers on a special or muchloved piece that needs to fit with a new scheme is a specialty. Upholstered items with timber parts can be resurfaced and then the piece can be taken to your upholsterer for recovering. The team thrives on challenges and loves it if an unusual request comes in. The challenge can sometimes lie in bringing out of people’s heads the vision that they have. By talking through the end goal using samples and options to clarify, the team is very good at turning visions into reality. M.F. Turnbull is open from 8am-4pm Monday to Friday.

THE PERFECT PARTNERSHIP The foundation of your new dream home is the unbreakable partnership between you and your builder. Whether you are a Batman seeking Robin, Ginger in search of Fred, or Sir Ed demanding Tensing, you’ll find exactly who you need within the team at Jennian Homes Canterbury.
A
t your first visit to one of the soon-to-be five show homes in Canterbury or to the Studio J design centre – or even letting your fingers do the walking, your first point of contact will be with one of the sales team. They will give you the full picture of the array of design options, fittings and fixtures, how you can vary specifications to suit you, the sales process, talk through the lifestyle you desire, where you would love to live, and the musthaves for your home. The sales team works on
the design with you, taking your plan from concept to final details, then the dedicated client liaison group continues the great service with open communication throughout the interior design and council consenting process. The project management team then moves the project from dreams and paper to reality, working with an incredible team of trades and suppliers. “They are amazing, so supportive and always going the extra mile to ensure satisfaction. We work closely with our crew of sub-trades and suppliers
to ensure our clients have the best possible build journey that they can have,” Director Sue Prendergast says. Further, above and beyond the care of Jennian’s tight-knit group of professionals stands your connection with one of the four Directors of the company: Dwayne and Sue Prendergast and Paul and Wairete Jenkins. One of the four will be in communication directly with you at all times throughout the build process. For Jennian Homes, 2020 has already started with a bang. “It’s going to be our busiest year yet with so many exciting projects in the pipeline,” Sue says. Joining the Timaru, Rolleston, and Halswell show homes is the newly opened home at Oaklea in Ashburton, and the team is thrilled to announce their latest show home, currently under construction at Ravenswood.
“It’s a great up and coming area, with the new Pegasus Bay school nearby,” Sue says. The home could suit the first home buyer through to executive buyers and is an architectural build with three bedrooms. “There are so many options available within this design though,” Sue says. “You bring your vision and we bring the flexibility; although we believe you will fall in love with the home as it is.” To further expand your home design decision horizons, or help confirm what you already knew, Jennian Homes Canterbury has created the supremely useful and sophisticated Studio J Design Centre, located at 212 Main South Road. The stunning Studio J Design Centre is designed to replicate a house, setting up the decisionmaking process in a logical order that you literally walk through. You begin ‘outside’ the house where different cladding options are displayed, along with roofing, landscaping items, decking and even the garage door. Whichever way your new home journey begins, you know you’ve found your ideal partnership with the team at Jennian Homes Canterbury.

Spotting botched earthquake repairs is a particular specialty and they have been doing this kind of work since 2011. AWAY
n the outside, the standard Q7 has been given a stylistic nip and tuck by Audi’s S department, giving you a more square-jawed looking front and rear, along with a set of blasting tailpipes. The HD Matrix LED headlights also look the business. Under the bonnet lies a 4.0-litre V8 Bi-Turbo diesel engine with 320kW/900Nm of torque, mated to Audi’s excellent eight-speed Tiptronic box sending that epic grunt to all four wheels by quattro all-wheel drive. Inside, Audi’s latest gen MMI infotainment system and virtual cockpit is just as slick as ever and the nav utilises Google Earth, which gives you accurate traffic reports. The SQ7 is also a full sevenseater, with the rear seats folding away to reveal a cavernous boot. You can raise and lower the car at will thanks to air suspension. Having the 20-inch wheels over the optional 22s makes for a softer ride. Audi’s ride comfort has certainly improved from previous generations, with the SQ7 soaking up all the bumps with considerable ease. Plant boot and 900Nm of torque comes in one big lump above 1600rpm, resulting in this
leather-clad cathedral reaching the national limit in 4.8 seconds, which is pretty darn brisk in anyone’s book. There is a slight delay as the turbo pressure builds but if you leave it in sport, the power delivery is more seamless. The V8 burble is torrent of symphonic bliss but somewhat subdued compared to the previous gen. The SQ7 is a hefty fella, but despite the girth, it can corner and handle the bends very well indeed, thanks to four-wheel steering which comes into play while at speed. The rear wheels turn in the same direction as those at the front, allowing you to eat up copious amounts of bendy bitumen, all with as little body roll as possible. The SQ7 is also a peach when soaking up motorway miles; the level of quietness and refinement while cruising at the national limit is almost peerless. Prices start at $184,900 and even in standard spec, the new SQ7 is a great all-rounder of a premium SUV, but the extra grunt and sportier edge takes a great package and runs with it, putting it squarely on anyone’s SUV shortlist.

O PREVENTION BETTER THAN THE CURE With the summer heat putting the real pressure on your air conditioning system, are you taking your system for granted? Does it seem like it’s not as cool as it used to be? Did you know that you should have it serviced every two years?
n average you lose 10 percent of the refrigerant gas that’s required for air conditioning your vehicle every year. The team at Leading Edge checks this in a service. It’s that knowledge that puts them above others in the market. They will also replace the cabin filter which becomes blocked with pollen,
dust and road grit, giving you fresher, healthier air inside the vehicle. Here’s a tip: Leading Edge recommends running your air conditioning system regularly, even in the winter, as the refrigerant contains a light mineral oil to keep the compressor properly lubricated. Leading Edge not only provides services but also takes care of warrants of fitness, auto electrics, tyres and wheel alignments, brakes, steering and suspension and so much more, using the latest diagnostic equipment. All of their work is guaranteed and the team of skilled, professional people with a wide, up-to-date knowledge base of European, Japanese and electric cars are going to know what your car needs to get the job sorted. shered into to the boardroom, we were given an extensive breakdown of the specifications. It’s a seven-seat SUV with more spin than a very spinny thing! With a 3.0-litre six-cylinder, 243 kW and 700Nm, it also has plenty of power. The Burmester surround sound system with 13 speakers blows your mind, with 590 watts of sound and ambient internal lighting in 64 shades, beautiful leather interior with oak wood trim and a sunroof for that wonderful open-air breeze. To be honest, there is a hell of a lot of luxury packed into what doesn’t feel like a seven-seater. Its increased size is more than made up for in the power and handling capabilities, but the increased room makes for a REAL seven-seater, not like most of the tiny rear two seats of other brands. The test drivers were given the keys to take the vehicle for a drive to The Glass House, the home of Brick Bay Wines in Warkworth, north of Auckland, a stunning restaurant and the gateway to the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail. With the Mercedes GLS 400D, you simply insert the location into the navigation system and away you go; very easy to use! It was a hot day, making the seat cooling device with a back massage system a very welcome addition. That’s right, passenger and driver get a back massage by using hand signals, so you can turn this function off and on without losing sight of the road. After a couple of hours of driving, I felt better than when I got in the car! It’s a very solid drive and you can actually get a variation with an increased suspension if you really want to go hardcore off-road. The design features vents in the front grille which increases it aerodynamically and it’s got a lovely line for such a large 1:27:29 PM SUV.
A standout feature for me was the one button push that folds all rear seats down electronically; and no, it has sensors so it won’t squash the kids in case of accidental ignition. With all rear seats stowed away and loaded to the roof, the capacity reaches 2400 litres; that makes for a whole lot of options. I said to Jarrod from Mercedes that I could put a mattress in the back and go camping. He didn’t look impressed; the Mercedes GLS 400D is, after all, much too classy for such an endeavour. It comes in at $166,700 before on road costs which isn’t everybody’s price point but if you want the ultimate luxury of Mercedes SUV, it’s hard to look at anything else.

It’s hard not to like the Lexus RX. The large SUV has been the biggest seller for the premium Japanese brand for many moons now and, for 2020, the people’s choice has been tweaked and updated. We got stuck into two variants of the new car over a two-week period. So, the 2020 RX, is it still good? Well, yes actually.

ight models, petrol and hybrid, make up the range, with petrol and hybrid powertrains available. Things start at $97,400 for the base RX 350 petrol, and top out at $127,500 with the flagship RX 450hL hybrid. In between, you have the F SPORT and the high-end Limited options for the RX 350 and RX 450h, but Limited only for the roomier sevenseater L spec cars. Power for the RX 350 and RX 350L comes in the form of a 3.5-litre petrol V6 putting 221kW/370Nm through all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic, while returning 9.6L/100km respectively. The RX 450h and RX 450hL naturally get the petrol-electric hybrid set up, with 230kW/335Nm and a CVT box. Economy is more frugal at 5.7L/100km. The new RX gets some more goodies. Apple Car Play and Android Auto now come as standard, along with the same 12.3-inch infotainment system as before, albeit now with touchscreen capability. It also sits 138mm closer than before, but the touchpad interface can be a tad unresponsive at times. Safety kit includes lane tracing assist, lane centring, road sign assist and cyclist detection. Also, let’s not forget BladeScan. It may sound like a prequel to ‘Blade Runner’ but it is in actual fact, a worldfirst in headlight tech. Both the F SPORT and Limited models have 12 individual
lights incorporated into each headlight and BladeScan utilises tiny mirrors spinning at 100 times a second which help reflect the light through each headlight. Lexus claim this shines more light on the road ahead than having 200 individual LED lights; a bright idea indeed. First to test was the V6 petrol F SPORT, which from the get-go was rather nice on the move. The howl of the 3.5-litre V6 was stimulating to say the least, and a linear torque curve above 2000rpm made for a smooth delivery of power. The eight-speed box provided slick changes and perfectly weighted steering means plenty of feedback was on offer. The RX 450h provided all the silent running you could expect with Lexus’ hybrid set up. You can remain in EV mode up to speeds of 50km/h, but give it too much foot and it defaults to petrol power. The choice of petrol or hybrid can be a conundrum for some however, for this writer, the hybrid represents the best choice for its frugality, refinement and efficiency which few in the game can do like Lexus can. However, whichever you choose, the new look RX, like its predecessors, is easy to be impressed with. The changes might be minor, but they bring the RX up-to-date in great style.
