owning a home of their own will be an ongoing challenge. The property market continues to rise, with the average house value increasing by 3.6 percent nationally during the three month period to the end of September. The latest QuotableValue figures show that the national average property value is now sitting at $977,456. The second strongest value gain for the main cities during that time was in Christchurch with 7.7 percent growth. The average property value is now $702,215 in Christchurch. That’s good news for sellers, but tough on those looking to buy their first home.

New large-scale housing developments will provide more scope for buyers, as will a predicted gradual slowing in the rate of value growth in the foreseeable future. So too will the proposed new law allowing, from August next year, buildings of up to three storeys on most city sites without any need for council resource consent. Behind Well-known New Zealand playwright Roger Hall has an unmatched repertoire, and impressive awards to match. He chats to Georgia Summerton about his writing process, memorable moments and his connection to Christchurch.
R
oger has been honoured with many awards and titles for his contribution to performing arts in New Zealand and for good reason. His prolific career has played a key role in keeping local theatres and actors busy since he started. Currently living in Auckland, Roger speaks fondly of his professional and personal Christchurch connections. “When we lived in Dunedin, I visited Christchurch often, mostly connected with theatre. The Court’s production of Glide Time (Mervyn Glue in the cat) around 1978, then to work on Footrot Flats The Musical, co-written with Christchurch writers AK Grant and Philip Norman, and socially to see good friends the late Barrie Tait and Philippa Tait.” Christchurch’s The Court Theatre has been home to many of his plays, and the relationship is special. “The Court did my first play, Glide Time, in 1978. They entered into the spirit of the play by making the programme as a manila folder. “During the performance, the door handle came off accidentally in the first half, ruining a joke that I had set up in the second half. “Glide Time did very well for The Court; it had an extended season, plus a season at the James Hay. As a result, The Court increased the actors’ pay by 10 percent.” He recalls a particularly special moment at The Court, performing Footrot Flats, The Musical. During the preview a night before opening, the invited audience gave a very subdued response. “We thought we had a flop. The opening night was full of true theatre enthusiasts. As soon as Wal came on stage, there was a roar of approval from the audience. We knew had a hit.”
12 28 October, 2021 Metropol
Roger is best known for writing brilliant comedies that carry a vein of social criticism and thoughtprovoking themes. While the repertoire is large, there is one work he is particularly proud of. “By Degrees, which was an all-woman cast describing how they came to university later in life than most people and what it meant to them. The characters never spoke to each other, but simply told the audience their experience as they progressed through their degrees. The director wanted to have them talk to each other, but I insisted they didn’t. It worked. And I received a lot of positive response from women about how much the play meant to them.” And his most memorable play? “It has to be Middle-Age Spread because it was such a hit here, in Australia and then 15 months in the West End. My parents were able to be at the first night, a wonderful moment for them. And it set me up financially.” As every writer knows, the writing process is a fascinating and challenging one; a real journey and some moments are enjoyed more than others which Roger knows all too well. “Writing the words ‘THE END’, and starting is a nice feeling. Everything in between is a fairly hard slog, but developing characters is a fascinating process.” A lot of creatives refer to a muse through their process of making art. Roger’s thoughts on this are quite simple, and food for thought for those ever facing a serious case of writer’s block, “If you wait for the muse, you won’t get much done….” What is next for the successful playwright? “If only I knew! One or two possibilities, but too early to go public on them yet.”

Bird-pleasing plants
T
At this time of year the birds have a little more chirp in their voices and if you’d like to make the most of this free entertainment, plant some bird-friendly plants and they’ll come flocking.
he song of the bellbird and tui is something special and even though they’re native birds, you don’t necessarily need native plants to attract them to your garden, year-round. “There’s a reason prunus campanulata (cherry blossom) is known as the tui tree, they go mad for its nectar,” says Miranda Sinton of Lushingtons. “A lot of introduced plants can provide the best nectar. Grevilleas and bottlebrush attract birds, and bring vibrant colour to the winter garden.” She also recommends apple and crabapple trees to keep birds fed in autumn and winter. If you do want to go native, Miranda’s top plant choices would be kowhai, which provides spring feed and the New Zealand flaxes, phormium tenax (harakeke) and phormium cookianum (wharariki). “If you don’t have room for more plants, a bird bath and a bird feeder will help our feathered friends.” Talk to Miranda about the birds and the plants (and possibly the bees) at Lushingtons Garden, Gifts and Cafe. 5 Archibald St Tinwald, phone 03 308 6858. www.lushingtons.co.nz

What is your next chapter? The motivations as to why people buy or sell property range from a change in employment location or growth in family size, to downsizing or working on an investment portfolio.
n our profession of selling homes, we meet many people who are on a journey of big change in their living situation,” says Sahab Hussain, owner of Mike Pero Real Estate Northcote. Many choices to change address are lifestyle-driven. For some, there is the need for a fenced yard for the dog, extra garaging for ‘toys’ or the workshop, a sewing room, media lounge, home office, or perhaps a wine cellar. While there are those looking for lifestyle blocks, others are wanting apartments. “At Mike Pero Real Estate Northcote, we realise that each move has personal considerations,” explains Annette Pendergast, licensed salesperson. The length of time that properties are being held onto before they’re sold was last recorded in 2019 at about 7.4 years. When planning your move, it’s important to consider what your lifestyle will demand over the next 7-10 years. Mike Pero Real Estate uses its market knowledge of buyers’ expectations and personal ‘perfect home’ wish lists, combined with its experienced sales and marketing skills to ensure its agents are reaching the optimal buyers who find your home ideal to choose for their next chapter. www.northcote.mikepero.com

The Mo
movement WORDS GEORGIA SUMMERTON
November is an important month for many Kiwis, as it signifies the incredible campaigning for Men’s mental health led by Movember. This year marks Angus Cameron’s fifth as a ‘Mo Bro’ and second as a community ambassador.
T
he movement is important to Angus, whose passion stems from a desire to be a part of the much-needed change. “I want to be a part of making a positive difference in other people’s lives. The stats around men’s health, particularly in New Zealand, aren’t great and men are dying too young. The movement that Movember has started around educating us about these stats and the work they are doing to help save men’s lives is something that I want to be a part of and help where I can. Also, a couple of years back I lost my cousin, Dan, to suicide. So, he is a key motivator for me personally.” The statistics are staggering when you start to look into the state of Kiwi’s mental health. The most recent data shows 607 people died by suspected suicide during the last year. Angus believes for this to change, there needs to be more education, and more talking. “The more people that are aware of their mental health and how that can be affected, as well as how other people’s mental health can be affected by completely different things, is key for us to be better equipped to have those

conversations and seek help when working through mental health issues.” From his work with Movember, Angus has gained some extremely valuable lessons and tools to share with those struggling. “My piece of advice would be that you don’t have to go through it alone. If you are struggling, then don’t be afraid to speak up and let someone know. Yeah, it might feel a little awkward or unnatural when you do it but what you’ve done by speaking to someone about it is taken a huge step forward in helping yourself get your mental health back on track.” As a nation, we are lucky to have inspiring individuals like Angus, who stand up for those struggling. We all need these kinds of role models, and he sure has his as well. “My Dad always has been and always will be a role model for me. He has set the tone right from the start and continues to set a good example for me. I also consider some of my close friends great role models, they have all done well in their respective fields and we all keep each other honest and push ourselves to be better friends and people.”
one on one
How Angus looks after his mental health.
“Exercise – whether it is getting out for a bike, walk, gym session, a game of golf or even getting into the garden at home, it always clears the head and gives that sense of accomplishment. When I am exercising, I always feel my healthiest.”
“Take a rest day – some days I do just like to blob on the couch and be a bit of a hermit. Life can get pretty busy sometimes and you feel like you’re jumping from one thing to the next, so I do enjoy having days where I literally do nothing and just take some time to slow down and relax.”
“Talk – when I do have those days when I am feeling a bit flat, I do try to talk to someone. Normally, to my partner Jess. She’s good at asking questions, getting information out of me, and putting things in perspective. I’m definitely not the most forthcoming sometimes but it is something I am working on and when I do talk, I feel better for it.”
Movember has funded over 1250 men’s health projects globally, and are making a true difference in mental health and suicide prevention, as well as prostate and testicular cancer. “I am extremely proud of the way New Zealand men can now acknowledge mental health issues, and their desire to be part of the solution for themselves, their friends, and whanau,” says Movember Country Manager, Robert Dunne. “As a nation, it’s important we continue to open up, reduce stigmatising language and promote help-seeking and help-offering behaviour. At Movember, we are lucky to have a trusted voice in mental health and an engaged community to advocate on our behalf. We understand our responsibility to communicate constructively and compassionately about suicide and suicide prevention and fund initiatives locally that help Kiwi men to do the same.” Check out the website to see how you can be a part of Movember 2021. www.nz.movember.com Metropol 28 October, 2021 17

Be careful what you wish for..... If you think you know all there is to know about the musical Little Shop of Horrors perhaps you might need to think again.
T
*
Little Shop of Horrors was originally produced at the Orpheum Theatre, New York City by WPA Theatre (Kyle Renick, Producing Director), David Geffen, Cameron Mackintosh and the Shubert Organization.
he Court Theatre’s summer revival of Little Shop of Horrors gives a fresh take to this genially gruesome classic. The shop itself has morphed into a van – a shop on wheels – something very familiar to Christchurch citizens so used to pop up stores and container malls. Never fear though, the beloved story of hapless florist shop worker Seymour and his blood-thirsty singing plant Audrey II will be brought to life with all the glorious technicolour and razzamatazz of costumes, set and killer performances we expect from The Court
Theatre’s musical productions. Do watch out for Audrey II, as the carnivorous succulent may not be quite what you expect. The show’s music, composed in the style of early 1960s rock and roll and doowop includes a number of hits - “Somewhere That’s Green”, “Feed Me” and “Suddenly, Seymour” – all performed by The Court’s deluxe cast. Little Shop of Horrors is disarmingly funny, clever and tuneful. On at The Court Theatre from November 20 – January 1, 2022. Just remember... Don’t feed the plants! Using green tech for climate change Reducing carbon emissions to net zero is urgent, and so is adjusting to the hazards of a warming world.
A
mong the companies actively supporting change is FintechNZ which recently called for more commitment to green tech to help climate change and move toward a sustainable financial services sector. FintechNZ acting executive director Jason Roberts says finance companies need to act now as New Zealand charts a path to recovery from a global pandemic and prepares for a resilient future. “The general investor and many businesses are not only aware of the challenge, but often the rewards are just as
good, instead of investing in fossil fuels, for example,” he says. “Finding and accessing funds is much easier now that we have next generation platforms such as Sharesies, Hatch and Kernel that allow investors to choose portfolios of interest. “Financial markets globally are playing a major part in shifting investment away from emission-intensive activities and towards a lower emission economy.” Roberts is encouraging the public to grow their investments with companies that are supportive of, not against climate change.
He cited several examples of beneficial change: Launching a green finance action such as Singapore did in 2019. NZ listed companies publishing sustainability reports. Currently only an estimated 25 out of 150 do this. Compliance to reporting requirements even though it places additional pressure on the financial sector in New Zealand. New Zealand’s banks and investment firms integrating public climate policy into their business objectives and activities. Kiwi firms developing platforms to analyse the environmental impact of investments.

New residency visa category Thousands of migrants now have a pathway to New Zealand residency.
I
mmigration New Zealand has just announced a new category, starting December 1, offering a one-off opportunity for many migrants who are currently living and working in New Zealand to apply for a residency visa. The new 2021 Residency Visa Category recognises the contribution migrants have made to New Zealand during Covid-19 and the uncertainty they and the businesses they work for have faced with closed borders and necessary changes to immigration settings. Migration Associates (NZ) Ltd managing director Borey Chum says this means that certain migrants will now be able to apply for their residency visas on a streamlined fast-track process. A licensed immigration advisor, director of the New Zealand Association for Migration and
Investment, and a qualified barrister and solicitor, Mr Chum says the visas will be available to most workrelated visa holders. These include Essential Skills, Work to Residence, and Post Study Work visas, plus their immediate family members. “We can help with that, assist you to determine whether you and your family are eligible and plan your pathway to residency in New Zealand,” he adds. The streamlined application process will require health, police and security criteria to be met. Plans are to have the majority of applications granted within a year of the category opening. “Our team of Licensed Advisors in Christchurch is able to determine your eligibility for the 2021 Residency Visa free of charge. Please visit our website to complete our free no obligation visa eligibility form.”
Eligibility for the 2021 Residency Visa Criteria Have been in New Zealand on September 29 this year Be on an eligible visa or have applied for an eligible visa before September 29 Have lived in New Zealand for three or more years; or earn at or above the median wage ($27 per hour); or work in a role on the ‘scarce list’.
Visa eligibility All applicants must already hold a Post Study Work Visa, Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa, Essential Skills Work Visa, Long Term Skill Shortage List Work Visa, Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa and in some cases, a Critical Purpose Visitor Visa. Applications open Phase One opens December 1 for people who have submitted a Skilled Migrant Category or Residence from Work application, plus those with dependent children 17 years or older who currently have an SMC Expression of Interest submitted. Phase Two opens on March 1 next year for all other eligible applicants, including any others in the SMC Expression of Interest pool, can apply.

Athol McCully, NAI Harcourts
Business is booming Despite the recent lockdown, or maybe because of it, NAI Harcourts is very busy currently dealing with both buyers and sellers of businesses.
e usually find that during a holiday period, enquiries for businesses ramp up, and we believe that’s because people have some time to consider what they would like to do next, and the thought of buying a business has strong appeal, says Athol McCully. “The recent lockdown had the same effect, so right now we are fielding a lot of enquiries, particularly from the North Island, from people who see Christchurch as an excellent location to live and own a business. “We are seeing strong enquiry on hospitality businesses such as cafes and restaurants, and accommodation businesses like motels, among the wide range of options. The opportunities are there, and people are keen to explore them. “If you are thinking of selling your business, or are seeking a business opportunity, now is a great time to act – don’t hesitate to contact us at your earliest convenience. We will be happy to have a confidential no-obligation chat to see how we can help you.” www.naiharcourts.co.nz

Q: I am buying an existing business, how does the handover with the previous owner work? A:
For a smooth change of ownership, key items which need attention include: 1. Staff: Liaise with the outgoing owner regarding which staff will be required by the new owner, who will need to provide new employment contracts. A Vendor deals with existing staff and pays any outstanding entitlements, etc. 2. EFTPOS: Arrange EFTPOS facilities with your Bank as early as possible to avoid handover complications. 3. Vendor assistance: In a sale there is usually a period of Vendor assistance (at no charge) where the previous owner assists the new owner in learning the intricacies of the business. Typically, this is up to 10 working days but varies depending on the experience of the new owner, and the business type. 4. Customers: Advise customers of the change of ownership, introducing the new owner, and acknowledging the outgoing owner – agree content between the parties before being sent. 5. A new owner should assess the business before making any changes – we have seen some people make major changes to a business immediately on takeover, with disastrous results, so be careful!

The value of print
Doing well while doing good
In our highly digital world, and with so many spending more time at home, people are craving physical experiences with brands.
T
Sustainability is a growing topic of interest, with investors and the general public alike.
S
ustainability isn’t just about climate change; it also means thinking about social factors, as well as governance. These factors impact and resonate with everyone differently which is why we cannot simply look at purchasing or investing decisions as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Considering sustainability when assessing whether to invest in a company, can not only align investments to your values and encourage companies to make positive change, it can also identify risks to the longevity and strength of a company’s business model. Socially responsible investing is here to stay. Socially responsible investing is anticipated to become increasingly important in the years ahead. Covid-19 has acted as a boost, with more investors now recognising the
importance of thinking about the bigger picture, rather than only pursuing returns. Gone are the days where the only focus for a company was on maximising shareholder value – a company must now be aware of the impacts of its activities on all stakeholders - shareholders, customers, employees, suppliers, or society at large. To help investors, Craigs Investment Partners has developed sustainability scores, which provide valuable information for socially responsible investors. These weigh up key issues and highlight environmental, social and governance factors for investors to consider in an easy to understand way. he beauty of a print magazine, for example, is its tangibility. There is something almost luxurious about settling in with a cup of tea and flicking through the glossy pages, taking time to fully enjoy the reading experience. While online shopping is extremely convenient and useful in our busy world, it lacks this tactile experience with brands. People are multi-channel consumers and companies that create layered campaigns understand that this helps achieve unified messages, and an overall stronger voice and brand. Getting into people’s homes,
and more importantly into their hands, alongside a strong digital presence, works to support and even increase a company’s marketing effectiveness. It gives people tangibility, something to touch and physically share with friends and family. Recent research shows that letterbox marketing is rising, and big brands are reverting back to this kind of channel to support their digital and online presence. Layering campaigns across different channels is a winning combination for a brand’s marketing strategy, and print is, and always will be, an integral component.

ounder of accounting and business advisory firm Social Currency, Lisa is investing in the next generation through a business model that donates 10 percent of all sales to help at-risk youth in Aotearoa. A chartered accountant, Lisa has helped raise almost $100,000 for charitable groups. She knows from personal experience, as a single mum to son Dakota, the socioeconomic factors that come with social stigmas, risk factors and stereotypes. In addition to business and accounting, she studied psychology and sociology, learning the impact the mind and social factors have on individuals. Now she uses her knowledge to inspire young people to
dream, to realise success, and in their everyday decisionmaking processes. “Social Currency exists to support young people, particularly those who are vulnerable by birth or circumstance to be empowered and changed through time with mentors and positive role models. “The end goal is to break the inter-generational cycle that these statistics and risk factors contribute to. Resilient kids need positive thinking and a strong mindset for future success. “Together we make this a reality.” To put it simply, in the words of her son, Social Currency exists “to help kids have a better future”. www.socialcurrency.co.nz

Planning for retirement The sooner the better is the best possible advice when it comes to planning and saving for retirement.
A
ge 30, 40 and 50 may seem a long way off, and 65 incomprehensible, but come the day you do decide to opt for a life of retirement, early planning will prove invaluable. That’s where Shiree Hembrow, a financial adviser at phwealth, can help make a big difference. With more than 25 years’ experience in the financial planning industry, Shiree can assist clients with all aspects of wealth management and financial planning – from retirement planning to estate planning, budgeting to investing. She helps all manner of clients, specialising in helping women, from a young age, to participate confidently in financial activities. Women in particular need to think longer term and plan for retirement, says Shiree. “Statistically women live longer than men and earn less. This means women require more
money saved for what is likely to be a longer retirement. Women over 50 need reassurance they will not run out of money or be a burden on their families,” she explains. Statistics New Zealand data shows the gender pay gap was more than nine percent in the June 2021 quarter. “This means women earn less but will require more money saved for what is likely to be a longer retirement.” She says the sooner anyone starts saving, the better off they will be. “For instance if you’re 60 and want to retire in five years’ time, you will have to save so much more than if you had started 20 years earlier.” Recent research found that 86 percent of retired people aged over 65 rely strongly on New Zealand Superannuation for their income. “It’s easier if you own your own home, but if you don’t then a lot of the
superannuation will go on rent. If people want to maintain their standard of living they must have an additional source of income.” A recent HorizonPoll in New Zealand showed Kiwis are putting more money into lifestyle assets ahead of investments. Shiree’s advice is to invest a higher proportion into growth funds, i.e. shares rather than fixed interest investments, as shares have a higher expected return over the long term. She can help you determine the correct proportion of growth funds based on your financial goals, your risk profile and your investment time frame. “It’s a more volatile market, but longterm you will reap the rewards as your investment assets build to support your years in retirement.” Phone Shiree on 03 288 0499 or 027 289 1563, or email her at shiree.hembrow@phwealth.co.nz www.phwealth.co.nz Metropol 28 October, 2021 25

Shaping the future Resource Management is a dynamic and rapidly changing area of law, with ambitious reforms planned.
T
hat’s where Anderson Lloyd partner Sarah Eveleigh comes into play. For Sarah, the most enjoyable part of her practice is the variety of work each day, and the team nature of this area of law. Having graduated with both a law and a science degree, resource management law is Sarah’s natural focus. “Our clients, including developers, industry and the rural sector, all tell us that the pace of change is one of their biggest challenges at the moment. It is our role to provide as much guidance as possible, identifying the issues which are most likely to affect them, and focusing on how to best achieve their objectives.” “We work closely with our clients as well as consultants from a range of other disciplines. Within the firm we are a very connected team and collaborate across our other offices in Auckland, Dunedin and Queenstown. For the most part we get to be forward looking, assisting clients to shape the future operation of their businesses, enable development, and protect our most important natural resources. It’s so rewarding to see a project you have worked on come to fruition,” says Sarah. Sarah began working at Anderson Lloyd in 2007, becoming a partner in 2019. She’s seen a raft of changes over that time, both at Anderson Lloyd and in the area of resource management law.
Being aligned in our values and focused on delivering on these is very important part of who we are and how we operate.
“Being aligned in our values and focused on delivering on these is very important part of who we are and how we operate,” she says. Anderson Lloyd has made good progress in terms of gender equity, with 42 percent of the partners at the firm being female. “We are consciously making positive inroads in developing a deeper understanding and awareness of te ao Māori through firm-wide te reo Māori lessons, and a cultural awareness programme that is Ngāi Tahu centred and delivered by Naia. Anderson Lloyd is also a member of Diversity Works,” says Sarah. She supports the way Anderson Lloyd looks at sustainability in a practical manner with local decisions that make sense. “It is important to look at sustainability though a broad lens, not just a focus on the environment, but also what this means for our business, our staff and the community. At Anderson Lloyd, we have made changes to the way we work, reduced carbon emissions including reduced business travel, increased use of community days and encouraged more staff engagement in sustainability goals with local sustainability committees currently being introduced,” says Sarah. Anderson Lloyd is the first large law firm to be Toitū carbonzero accredited, is a Living Wage Employer and is also a member of the Sustainable Business Council. www.al.nz Metropol 28 October, 2021 27

Tackling gymtimidation Just the thought of going to the gym with lots of others is enough to put some people off, and make others quit after one or two sessions. Avoid peak hour
Gyms have peak times: going outside of these hours, when the gym is quieter can feel less intimidating. Some gyms have an app which will track how busy it is, so you can check when it is generally quieter.
O
verseas research by UK health club chain PureGym has revealed several ways to help tackle “gymtimidation” and improve confidence for new and existing gym members. The research found that one in three gym members (39 percent) considered quitting due to a lack in confidence in their training or time at the gym. Here are some of the top tips for reducing gym anxiety.
Wear comfortable clothing
Not everyone trains in a sports bra and the tight shorts or leggings. If wearing something baggy makes you feel confident then wear that. Likewise, if you feel more comfortable in lycra, then go for it.
HAIRLOSS, BALDNESS, ALOPECIA OR SCALP DISORDERS
Take a gym tour
It can feel intimidating not knowing where any of the kit is as every gym is set out differently and uses different equipment. Taking a tour before you start, either through an induction or simply walking around, can help alleviate nerves.

Foundation awards $865,000 for health research Eight local medical researchers have been awarded a total of $865,000 in funding from the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) as part of its annual Major Project Grants round.
T
his year’s research topics include Huntington’s Disease, cannabis use in pregnancy, stuttering in children, tuberculosis, mental health, prostate and breast cancer. Foundation Director Melissa Haberfield says CMRF is delighted that its annual grants process has continued despite Covid-19 lockdowns, as a number of similar funding programmes have not. “Researchers rely on securing funding to undertake their projects. Supporting Canterbury-based health and wellbeing research is our reason for being,” she explains. “It’s testament to the hard work of our team and the dedication of our loyal supporters who have donated to fund these world class research projects. Research is incredibly important and shouldn’t stop because of things like Covid-19. In fact, it’s more important than ever.” CMRF received a record number of applications this year, highlighting the demand for health and medical research funding. All researchers are aligned with one of CMRF’s host institutions including University of Canterbury, University of Otago Christchurch and New Zealand Brain Research Institute.
The successful researchers are:
Dr Vanessa Morris Biochemistry
Dr Daniel Foley Cancer Research
Dr Campbell Le Heron Brain Research
Dr Jenni Manuel Mental Health
Dr Elisabeth Phillips Cancer Research
Dr Catherine Theys Child Health
Dr Timothy Allison Biochemistry
Dr Amy Osborne Human Biology
About CMRF
Currently more than 37 CMRF funded research projects are underway, with some of them already producing important findings and interim results. The CMRF is a non-profit organisation focused on investing in world class research to achieve better health and well-being outcomes for people through the prevention, treatment and ultimately, the cure of life threatening and debilitating conditions. Since it was established in 1960 by Sir
Don Beaven, it has funded more than $30 million in research into devastating conditions such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart disease, bowel disease, strokes, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. The Foundation is reliant on the goodwill and financial support of generous individuals, trusts and businesses. This support during the last 60 years means the foundation has investments in excess of $14 million and is able to award research grants in the order of $1 million, annually. www cmrf.org.nz/research Metropol 28 October, 2021 41

Lemonade
Lemons add sweetness and tartness to baking so think lemon cake, muffins, slices, biscuits, a sprinkle of zest in or on baked goodies, and also a drizzle of home-made lemon syrup. Don’t forget lemon tarts and lemon meringue pie.
A change from traditional orange and grapefruit marmalades, the lemon variety is tangy and zingy on the tastebuds, and aside from livening up your morning toast, can be used numerous ways for delicious desserts and baking too.
Bottling lemons means you can enjoy them long after their season has closed. Try Annabel Langbein’s easy preserving recipe, after which you can use them in a myriad of dishes especially Moroccan cuisine, stews and tagines.
Homemade lemon curd is another easy way to use up surplus lemons. Ingredients include butter, eggs and juicy lemons. If you’re making a Pavlova, save the egg yolks and make lemon curd. It tastes great as a pav topping.
Lemons make a great variety of thirstquenching drinks such as homemade lemonade, lemon cordial and even limoncello if you’re game. Packed full of Vitamin C, they also make a revitalising hot toddy mixed with honey and hot water.

Serves 4-6
Method 1.
Combine all curd ingredients in a saucepan. Whisk gently over a low heat until thick, about 8 minutes. Make sure the mixture never boils or sticks to the base of the pan.
2.
Once the curd is thick, pour into a jug, cover tightly with cling film and place in the fridge to completely cool.
3. 4. 5.
6 egg yolks 100g caster sugar 400ml tropical fruit juice 45g butter 1 lime, zest & juice 35g corn flour
Pastry
200g plain flour 45g desiccated coconut 100g butter 1 Tbsp icing sugar 2-3 Tbsp water
Meringue
2 egg whites 100g caster sugar
Bring the mixture together with 2-3 tablespoons of water to form a stiff dough. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. When chilled, roll out the pastry on a floured surface and then line the skillet, allowing the pastry to slightly overhang the side.
7.
Pierce the pastry several times with a fork, line with parchment paper and fill the pastry case with baking beans or rice.
8.
Bake for 10 minutes. Remove baking beans or rice and bake for a further 8 minutes. Remove from oven and cool slightly.
9.
When the curd has completely cooled, pour into pastry and set aside whilst you make the meringue.
10.
In a very clean bowl, whisk the egg whites until firm and fluffy. Using a tablespoon, slowly add spoonfuls of sugar whilst continuously whisking. Once all the sugar is incorporated, continue to whisk until firm glossy peaks form.
11.
Spoon the meringue into a piping bag and pipe meringue kisses on top of the curd and sprinkle with coconut. Bake for a further 15 minutes.
12.
Remove from the oven and finish with lime zest.
To serve
Zest of 1 lime 20g coconut flakes, toasted
Place the flour, butter, icing sugar and desiccated coconut in a food processor. Pulse to create a fine breadcrumb texture.

Boogie into Christmas The countdown to Christmas is on and besides the shopping and myriad Yuletide preparations, there’s the office Christmas function to arrange.
I
t’s important to get this right. A cluster of colleagues glued to their devices during a work do then making excuses to leave early is no way to end the year. At Boo Radley’s, this never happens. Here is the supreme venue – the superstar of venues. Open seven days from 4pm till late, this award-winning, southern-USA styled restaurant
and bar features live music and performance, stand-up comedy, burlesque and open-mic events. The food is hearty and scrumptious, and the plate sharing selection, composed of the finest ingredients, means there’s something for everyone and nobody goes home hungry. Toast Christmas with a local or international craft beer, a wine from the hand-picked wine list, or savour a bourbon
from an extensive selection of bourbon whiskeys. Cocktails can be ordered from the menu or patrons can request their own signature cocktail to be crafted on the spot.
To show your hard-working team that you’re no Ebenezer Scrooge, gift them a bourbon or cocktail masterclass. Celebrate the spirit of Christmas at Boo Radley’s. Level 1, 98 Victoria Street. www.booradleys.co.nz

The private vineyard tour and wine tasting experience is second to none, and allows you to not only taste the wines, but also experience the growing process. The walking tour will take you through the lush vineyards, tasting the beautiful boutique wines in the row they were grown in. The tour is a fun and light-hearted way to learn about and taste the wines that are so lovingly made at Melton Estate.

Creating bonds through cooking Rekindling connections that have been neglected during Covid-19 disruptions is imperative for business relationships.
oming together and sharing food is one of the best, time honoured ways to nurture and bond with others. One that is approached in a unique way during Riverside Kitchen’s cooking classes. “The past 18 months have been hard slog for a lot of people,” says owner Kirsten Fox. “It’s vital for businesses to let their clients know that they’re important to them.” The classes are also an excellent way for clients to get to know another side of the people they are used to only seeing on a professional level. Choose from a MasterChef-type team challenge or the Mystery Box Challenge. “The Pasta Challenge is really popular and fun,” says Kirsten. “We’re right upstairs from Riverside Market. The teams are given Riverside dollars which they use to buy ingredients for a ravioli filling, then they run back and get cooking.” Think of it as a group bonding experience without having to do an obstacle course, through mud. Kirsten says that you can cook your way to better relationships. Call 021 168 7209, email book@riversidekitchen.co.nz. www.riversidekitchen.co.nz

Here comes the sun Longer days equate to more sun and time spent relaxing in our sunniest spots. Many homes have sun rooms, positioned where best to capture the warm rays. Of course it doesn’t have to be a whole room, maybe just a sunny corner with some cosy chairs, a coffee table, a few books, a rug and some soft cushions. Here are some suggestions from Metropol.
Colour
Furniture
White is ideal for a sunroom because it helps to enhance the airy mood of the space. Paint the walls and ceiling white or light colours, and use floaty, airy window treatments, and white or bright coloured contrast furniture. A mid-coloured floor will help to keep the room grounded.
Comfy cosy is the order of the day with sofas and chairs. Wicker works well too, as do slatted wooden beach-style chairs with soft cushions. Add a few throws and pillows, some potted plants, maybe a drinks trolley, and a coffee table laden with books and Metropol magazines.
HEAD OF THE GLASS
Accessories
Decorate your space according to your style and colours. For a minimalist sunroom try a candle lantern, a favourite piece of art and furniture with clean lines. For a more boho look, use wicker, bright textiles and prints, jute rugs and woven planters. You could also try outdoor furniture and accessories.

W
hether your outdoor area is big or small, having one dedicated space where you can sit with a book – or drink – in hand makes all the difference on a hot summer’s day or a balmy summer’s night. What’s more, creating an outdoor patio that’s stylish, welcoming and cosy, will not only make this area an extra living space, but a destination. Bring life and intrigue to the walls with
Resene FX Paint Effects, a tintable acrylic. This textured look gives you an opportunity to create a unique alternative to traditional wall coverings and is especially appropriate for outdoor areas where such options are more difficult to work in effectively. The walls on this outdoor patio have been painted in Resene Aspiring with paint effect Resene FX Paint Effects Medium tinted in Resene Moon Mist.
Top tip
If you’re wanting a similar solid paint colour to Resene Woodsman Uluru, try Resene Double Pavlova, a green-tinted cream, or Resene Teak, a rustic brown. These earthy yellow hues are paired beautifully with similarly earthy greens such as Resene Flax on the tray and Resene Siam on the small plant pot, which provide a soft contrast to the gentle, textured walls. Don’t forget to accessorise with textured cushions in similar colours to Resene Wafer, Resene Castle Rock and Resene Travis, with a sizeable rattan rug and leafy, tropical plants for a nature-inspired look.
In this outdoor patio, light is bounced around through bright popping hues and soft highlights. The deck stained in Resene Woodsman Uluru, a blonded brown wood stain, brings in warmth from below, where it is matched with pops of sunny-inspired hues such as the table and large plant pot in the rustic and casual mustard of Resene Teak and the rattan chair in the green and yellow toned beige of Resene Yuma.

The beauty of wood The loveliness of solid timber has been pleasing the human eye for millennia and we never tire of an exquisitely hewn piece in pale or dark woods or reds, or striped and patterned. However, as time passes there are fewer people about with the ability to bring that beauty into our homes.
I
f you are renovating or building, you can’t do better for adding value, point of difference, stopping visitors in their tracks, and of course your everyday pleasure than to bring crafted solid wood into your home. But where to find a team who have the skills and will take the time? Murray Hewitt Joinery has not only the craft and the time, but the passion for working in solid wood. Every job from replacing window sashes to stairs, balustrading to bi-folding doors is approached with care and enthusiasm. “We have just completed a solid timber library and entry way,” says director Murray Hewitt, “its really stunning.” Able to source just about any wood you can think of from maple and walnut to American oak and wenge, just bring in the looks you’d like to replicate, and the team will help select the right wood for the job. www.mhj.co.nz

These days, the word ‘containers’ conjures up the big steel rectangles stuck either in the Suez Canal or the wrong ports. But gardeners know that there’s another whole world of containers that can always be in the right place.
Short of space or sunshine?
Want to get creative?
Containers are your answer because of their flexibility; most food-producing plants prefer full sun for maximum production, but some prefer part shade especially in the hot season (e.g. coriander, broccoli, pak choi, spinach, and rhubarb), which means you can give everything prime position as the seasons change. Avoid using smaller pots which are limiting when it comes to crop choices. And of course, a VegePod is the ultimate in container gardening. Raised timber beds (or corrugated iron) are another good option as most fruit and vegetables prefer good drainage, which you also get with containers. Raised beds make for easy maintenance not only because of easy access, but several beds are less daunting work-wise than one big single space. The key to success with any gardening is the soil/potting mix, so always use premium quality. High quality potting mix will contain controlled-release fertilisers, Saturaid for even water distribution, and the correct micro-nutrients for the crop being grown.
Then add structures to the design for container/raised beds with obelisks, or wooden frames with vertical stringing for climbing beans, peas, and sweet peas. Add companion plants that will not only improve the health and yield of your crops but make any garden a work of art.
What to grow?
Marigolds can be planted with just about anything (except cabbages) to deter soil nematodes and attract beneficial insects that will deal with the ‘bad boys’. Lavender attracts bees and repels insects, and rosemary protects against insects on beans, carrots and cabbages. Basil planted as a border with tomatoes deters insects, improves tomato flavour, and attracts bees. Nasturtiums deter insects and the flowers are edible, as are viola flowers.
Just about anything edible! Patio dwarf fruit trees make a productive centrepiece. A garden divided into quarters containing strawberries, coriander, green lettuces, and red lettuces has good colour, contrast and interest. Broad beans and dwarf beans are best grown in rows for easy picking but most other crops are fine grown in the quarters of a raised bed. Add the companion planting to the raised bed or container as the finishing touch. www.garden.terraviva.nz Metropol 28 October, 2021 61

Wicked range of wicker Indonesia has some of the finest textile weavers in the world and the villages of West Java are renowned for their centuries-old artisanal traditions.
I
t was during a backpacking trip around Indonesia in the 1980s that a young New Zealand designer, Neil Briden, first came across hand-woven rattan furniture. This is where the WovenVeranda story begins. Sales manager Lisa Lloyd-Thwaites, says Neil was impressed by the 150 yearold weaving traditions he witnessed and wanted to incorporate them into his own designs. “He was living in Sweden and his designs were Scandinavian-inspired. So he needed a manufacturer who could bring those to life.” Lisa says he found the right manufacturer and the business relationship and friendship has been strong ever since.
He saw that bonds are created and strengthened when family members work together, taking turns learning and using the various techniques in the process.
The furniture frames are manufactured at the factory in the city of Cirebon, then delivered to surrounding villages where the weaving is done. “The fact that the weaving was a community enterprise really left an impression on Neil. He liked that the whole village would have a sense of ownership of the product,” says Lisa. “He saw that bonds are created and strengthened when family members work together, taking turns learning and using the various techniques in the process. And have great social interactions at the same time.” As they say, you can’t stop progress. The wicker furniture range has expanded to include indoor and outdoor ranges, which are made from different materials for different purposes, and to handle different environmental conditions. The outdoor range is designed for the varied, harsh European environment and copes with the extreme cold and high UV rays. Perfect for New Zealand’s changeable weather. Synthetic (polycarbonate) UV stabilised wicker is woven over commercial grade aluminium framing, which means no rusting. For indoors, the furniture is made from plant-sourced, natural wicker cane, woven on natural rattan tube framing. The chair cushion covers are 100 percent natural cotton. Clever, attention to detail sets the furniture above your run-of-the-mill wicker. “One great example of this is the design of the dining chairs,” says Lisa. “They have a concave area around the lower legs or feet. This accommodates natural body movement while sitting at a table. Very comfy.” Teak is highly featured in the dining and coffee tables and Lisa says it is all certified sustainable plantation teak, which has a lovely rustic look. For the latest chapter in the WovenVeranda story see them at The Old School Collective, 1429 Main North Road, Waikuku. Phone 03 423 3133, email info@wovenveranda.co.nz.

I
n real estate terms it is called kerb appeal, and there is nothing easier if you want to make a statement than to freshen a front door with a new coat of paint, or by installing a custom wood or steel door. The average life expectancy for a wooden entrance door is between 20 and 30 years, depending on the harshness of the climate it is exposed to. If you are looking to install a new door, you can expect to pay an average of $1450 to $1950 for a new single steel frame to be installed, $950 to $1550 installed for a wooden door, and $1800 to $3500 for a fully installed fibreglass door.

Contemporary design at its best I
The building makes a bold statement on its Sumner Esplanade site. Not only that, but its size and design definitely attract glances and comments from people walking by. There are in fact two dwellings here. That was part of the brief for the architects of MC Architecture Studio – a main house of 240 sq metres and a small apartment alongside.
t was a challenge to accommodate both buildings on the site,” says Massimiliano Capocaccia of MC Architecture. “The solution was to build up, to maximise the height of the building as much as allowable, which also gives the greatest access to the wonderful view of the ocean and across to the mountains.” The stepped levels of the two dwellings give the impression of a fragmented yet geometrical building that is wrapped with a timber skin. “The design idea was to have square and rectangular forms added and subtracted from the skin like a painting on a canvas“ The materials used add to the artistic effect. Cedar that will silver down is the main cladding, while stone tiles on one side of the main house also laid in squares and rectangles, add to the pleasing aesthetic. Constructing this complex design was a privilege for Steve Brown Builders. “It was certainly a different build,” says Steve Brown. “challenging, but a lot of fun. It’s the kind of project that really
engages me as a builder.” The tight site and the proximity to passing pedestrians made both access and use of equipment difficult. “We had to make multiple crane lifts from the street bringing in the required structural steel and cross laminated timber and there is no space on the site to store materials or equipment.” Steve says that a significant aspect of his company’s work involved all the internal finishes. “The joinery is complex, detailed and very slick using a variety of different timbers – from purple heart timber on the entry decking to oiled oak for the floors, Nordic spruce for the ceilings and rosewood for the staircase features. The designs on some of the doors even echo the squares and rectangles of the main house itself.” At the end of a very satisfying two year build, the house is ready for occupation and to continue to be the object of admiring looks for many years to come. www.mcarchstudio.nz

RISE OF THE MACHINES WORDS BEN SELBY
One cannot deny that EVs are on the rise. Therefore, it came as no surprise that the award-winning EQC would be the only EV from Mercedes-Benz. This brings us neatly to the EQA 250, the second battery electric vehicle (BEV) to feature that three-pointed star.

2021 Mercedes-Benz EQA 250
Price: $85,500 Engine: Single E-Motor Transmission: Automatic Power: 140kW Torque: 370Nm Drive: Electric and Front Wheel Drive 0 – 100km/h: 8.9 seconds Consumption: 16.2kWh Range: Claimed 410km Wheels: 20-inch AMG Alloys Wheels Boot Space: 370L
t $85,500 plus ORC, the EQA 250 just falls short of the Government’s criteria for the Clean Car Rebate. However, when you compare it to other luxury BEVs in this price bracket, the EQA presents itself as decent value. Looks wise, the EQA still mostly resembles the petrol powered GLA on which it’s based. However, instead of a front grill, you get a gloss black panel between a set of svelte LED headlights and a handsome LED lightbar at the rear. Also, those swish 20-inch AMG Alloys were icing on the cake. The EQA’s interior is very much a case of GLA déjà vu. The switchgear, steering wheel and the MBUX 10.25-inch dual screen infotainment system being the most obvious aspects. Mercedes’ Driver Assistance package which includes features like Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Steering, and Lane Keep Assist comes as standard, as does Mercedes-Me Connect. All the features are a doddle to use. Then again, you can simply utilise the “Hey Mercedes” feature like Siri or Alexa to operate most of them if you prefer. The heated leather seats serve up a good level of comfort and lateral support. Plus, once you are cocooned by your surroundings, there is a feeling of real quality in here. With a single E-motor and battery pack producing a combined 140kW
and 375Nm of torque, Mercedes claims electric range of 410km and while using a Type 2 fast-charging system, the EQA will recharge back to 80 percent full in a snip over half an hour. Flicking up and down on the shift paddles allows you to choose from four levels of regenerative braking, with the two negative stages providing some serious braking power while giving back some extra electric oomph. The EQA 250 is not what one would call brisk. However, the instant torque of an electric motor makes itself known when you flick over to ‘sport’ mode. It isn’t featherweight, but it can still dart around corners with plenty of pomp and ceremony should the need arise. While more than able to deliver a spirited drive, the EQA is much more at home sipping on the electric juice and prompting you to drive as economical as possible. Simply stick it in Comfort or Eco mode, and supple silent running becomes a soothing pastime. Ride quality is also very good, as is that beautifully symphonic Burmester Sound System. While not perfect, the EQA 250 is certainly a well-rounded, well-priced luxury BEV. It will come as no surprise if Mercedes shift a fair number of these while their EV family continues to grow over the coming years. All in all, this one is worth checking out.

It’s no secret the new Honda Jazz makes no bones about being one of the top choices in the supermini segment. Now the fourth generation Jazz goes full electric, well almost. Enter the Jazz e:HEV Luxe.

nder the bonnet is sits the petrol Jazz’s 1.5L four-cylinder engine with the addition of two electric motors. Being the range topper, the e:HEV Luxe ticks every option box on Honda’s spec sheet which includes Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, Honda’s Sensing Safety Suite and heated seats.
You also get the option of two-leather trim which in my opinion looks the business, as does the very clear and concise infotainment system. On the move, the e:HEV does its utmost to champion electric silent running over petrol power, with the petrol engine acting purely as a
generator to provide extra grunt while under hard acceleration, or to recharge the batteries. Honda claim a combined fuel figure of 2.8L/100km, but I was managing to average a snip over 4.0L/100km which was impressive. Thanks to smaller A-pillars
