The latest QuotableValue figures show that the national average property value is now sitting at $977,456. The second strongest value gain for the main cities during that time was in Christchurch with 7.7 percent growth. The average property value is now $702,215 in Christchurch. That’s good news for sellers, but tough on those looking to buy their first home.

New large-scale housing developments will provide more scope for buyers, as will a predicted gradual slowing in the rate of value growth in the foreseeable future. So too will the proposed new law allowing, from August next year, buildings of up to three storeys on most city sites without any need for council resource consent. Joining the previously announced line-up of New Zealand films is MILKED, a thought-provoking exploration of New Zealand’s dairy industry and Juliet Gerrard: Science in Dark Times, a fascinating insight into the life and career of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s Chief Science Advisor. New Zealand will be well represented, with short film competitions New Zealand’s Best 2021 and Ngā Whanaunga Māori Pasifika Shorts screening in both Christchurch and Wellington. As well as this, several locally produced shorts are due to screen ahead of features throughout the festival. “We hope that Kiwis will rally behind the film festival and show their support by coming out to see the stunning line-up of films that we’ll be presenting,” says festival director Marten Rabarts.

n innovator, a curator, a choreographer, and a performance artist, Alexa spent more than a decade performing in Europe and globally before returning to New Zealand. Among her credits, she choreographed the award-winning Magic Box and Toxic White Elephant Shock, for which she earned the prestigious title of Best Emerging Choreographer and the Creative New Zealand Tup Lang Award respectively. She returned in 2011 to win four Auckland Fringe Awards for her solo Weg: A-Way. As a choreographer and performer, Alexa’s work has taken her all around the world, including Berlin, Vienna, New York City, Germany, Belgium, Poland, London, Stockholm, Zurich, India, China and Vancouver. With a canon of choreographed work that includes Star/Oracle, The Status of Being and The Dark Light with Footnote NZ Dance, 21 Movements, Breathless, and

Alexa Wilson 999: Alchemist Trauma Centre/Power Centre. Rituals of Destruction is her first independently funded work since returning to Aotearoa, performed by Alexa herself alongside emerging talents Shani Dickins and Alana Yee, with a guest appearance by drummer Hannah Dactyl. She describes the work as a response to the current times of mass crisis, and the global phenomena of mass protests, collective resistance, and traumatic effects of a pandemic in this new piece. “Stemming from historical systemic imbalances, Rituals of Destruction is a glimpse at what happens when we reflect culture in order to transform it, aiming to break down oppressive norms in and around the body and identity.”

Transforming culture

Behind Well-known New Zealand playwright Roger Hall has an unmatched repertoire, and impressive awards to match. He chats to Georgia Summerton about his writing process, memorable moments and his connection to Christchurch.

oger has been honoured with many awards and titles for his contribution to performing arts in New Zealand and for good reason. His prolific career has played a key role in keeping local theatres and actors busy since he started. Currently living in Auckland, Roger speaks fondly of his professional and personal Christchurch connections. “When we lived in Dunedin, I visited Christchurch often, mostly connected with theatre. The Court’s production of Glide Time (Mervyn Glue in the cat) around 1978, then to work on Footrot Flats The Musical, co-written with Christchurch writers AK Grant and Philip Norman, and socially to see good friends the late Barrie Tait and Philippa Tait.” Christchurch’s The Court Theatre has been home to many of his plays, and the relationship is special. “The Court did my first play, Glide Time, in 1978. They entered into the spirit of the play by making the programme as a manila folder. “During the performance, the door handle came off accidentally in the first half, ruining a joke that I had set up in the second half. “Glide Time did very well for The Court; it had an extended season, plus a season at the James Hay. As a result, The Court increased the actors’ pay by 10 percent.” He recalls a particularly special moment at The Court, performing Footrot Flats, The Musical. During the preview a night before opening, the invited audience gave a very subdued response. “We thought we had a flop. The opening night was full of true theatre enthusiasts. As soon as Wal came on stage, there was a roar of approval from the audience. We knew had a hit.”

Roger is best known for writing brilliant comedies that carry a vein of social criticism and thoughtprovoking themes. While the repertoire is large, there is one work he is particularly proud of. “By Degrees, which was an all-woman cast describing how they came to university later in life than most people and what it meant to them. The characters never spoke to each other, but simply told the audience their experience as they progressed through their degrees. The director wanted to have them talk to each other, but I insisted they didn’t. It worked. And I received a lot of positive response from women about how much the play meant to them.” And his most memorable play? “It has to be Middle-Age Spread because it was such a hit here, in Australia and then 15 months in the West End. My parents were able to be at the first night, a wonderful moment for them. And it set me up financially.” As every writer knows, the writing process is a fascinating and challenging one; a real journey and some moments are enjoyed more than others which Roger knows all too well. “Writing the words ‘THE END’, and starting is a nice feeling. Everything in between is a fairly hard slog, but developing characters is a fascinating process.” A lot of creatives refer to a muse through their process of making art. Roger’s thoughts on this are quite simple, and food for thought for those ever facing a serious case of writer’s block, “If you wait for the muse, you won’t get much done….” What is next for the successful playwright? “If only I knew! One or two possibilities, but too early to go public on them yet.”

At this time of year the birds have a little more chirp in their voices and if you’d like to make the most of this free entertainment, plant some bird-friendly plants and they’ll come ﬂocking.

Grevilleas and bottlebrush attract birds, and bring vibrant colour to the winter garden.” She also recommends apple and crabapple trees to keep birds fed in autumn and winter. November is an important month for many Kiwis, as it signiﬁes the incredible campaigning for Men’s mental health led by Movember. This year marks Angus Cameron’s ﬁfth as a ‘Mo Bro’ and second as a community ambassador.

he movement is important to Angus, whose passion stems from a desire to be a part of the much-needed change. “I want to be a part of making a positive difference in other people’s lives. The stats around men’s health, particularly in New Zealand, aren’t great and men are dying too young. The movement that Movember has started around educating us about these stats and the work they are doing to help save men’s lives is something that I want to be a part of and help where I can. Also, a couple of years back I lost my cousin, Dan, to suicide. So, he is a key motivator for me personally.” The statistics are staggering when you start to look into the state of Kiwi’s mental health. The most recent data shows 607 people died by suspected suicide during the last year. Angus believes for this to change, there needs to be more education, and more talking. “The more people that are aware of their mental health and how that can be affected, as well as how other people’s mental health can be affected by completely different things, is key for us to be better equipped to have those

conversations and seek help when working through mental health issues.” From his work with Movember, Angus has gained some extremely valuable lessons and tools to share with those struggling. “My piece of advice would be that you don’t have to go through it alone. If you are struggling, then don’t be afraid to speak up and let someone know. Yeah, it might feel a little awkward or unnatural when you do it but what you’ve done by speaking to someone about it is taken a huge step forward in helping yourself get your mental health back on track.” As a nation, we are lucky to have inspiring individuals like Angus, who stand up for those struggling. We all need these kinds of role models, and he sure has his as well. “My Dad always has been and always will be a role model for me. He has set the tone right from the start and continues to set a good example for me. I also consider some of my close friends great role models, they have all done well in their respective fields and we all keep each other honest and push ourselves to be better friends and people.”

“Exercise – whether it is getting out for a bike, walk, gym session, a game of golf or even getting into the garden at home, it always clears the head and gives that sense of accomplishment. When I am exercising, I always feel my healthiest.”

Using green tech for climate change Reducing carbon emissions to net zero is urgent, and so is adjusting to the hazards of a warming world.

FintechNZ acting executive director Jason Roberts says finance companies need to act now as New Zealand charts a path to recovery from a global pandemic and prepares for a resilient future. “The general investor and many businesses are not only aware of the challenge, but often the rewards are just as

good, instead of investing in fossil fuels, for example,” he says. “Finding and accessing funds is much easier now that we have next generation platforms such as Sharesies, Hatch and Kernel that allow investors to choose portfolios of interest. “Financial markets globally are playing a major part in shifting investment away from emission-intensive activities and towards a lower emission economy.” Roberts is encouraging the public to grow their investments with companies that are supportive of, not against climate change.

New residency visa category Thousands of migrants now have a pathway to New Zealand residency.

mmigration New Zealand has just announced a new category, starting December 1, offering a one-off opportunity for many migrants who are currently living and working in New Zealand to apply for a residency visa. The new 2021 Residency Visa Category recognises the contribution migrants have made to New Zealand during Covid-19 and the uncertainty they and the businesses they work for have faced with closed borders and necessary changes to immigration settings. Migration Associates (NZ) Ltd managing director Borey Chum says this means that certain migrants will now be able to apply for their residency visas on a streamlined fast-track process. A licensed immigration advisor, director of the New Zealand Association for Migration and

Investment, and a qualified barrister and solicitor, Mr Chum says the visas will be available to most workrelated visa holders. These include Essential Skills, Work to Residence, and Post Study Work visas, plus their immediate family members. “We can help with that, assist you to determine whether you and your family are eligible and plan your pathway to residency in New Zealand,” he adds. The streamlined application process will require health, police and security criteria to be met. Vendor assistance: In a sale there is usually a period of Vendor assistance (at no charge) where the previous owner assists the new owner in learning the intricacies of the business. Typically, this is up to 10 working days but varies depending on the experience of the new owner, and the business type. 4. Foundation awards $865,000 for health research Eight local medical researchers have been awarded a total of $865,000 in funding from the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) as part of its annual Major Project Grants round.

his year’s research topics include Huntington’s Disease, cannabis use in pregnancy, stuttering in children, tuberculosis, mental health, prostate and breast cancer. Foundation Director Melissa Haberfield says CMRF is delighted that its annual grants process has continued despite Covid-19 lockdowns, as a number of similar funding programmes have not. “Researchers rely on securing funding to undertake their projects. Supporting Canterbury-based health and wellbeing research is our reason for being,” she explains. “It’s testament to the hard work of our team and the dedication of our loyal supporters who have donated to fund these world class research projects. Research is incredibly important and shouldn’t stop because of things like Covid-19. In fact, it’s more important than ever.” CMRF received a record number of applications this year, highlighting the demand for health and medical research funding. All researchers are aligned with one of CMRF’s host institutions including University of Canterbury, University of Otago Christchurch and New Zealand Brain Research Institute.

Lemons add sweetness and tartness to baking so think lemon cake, muffins, slices, biscuits, a sprinkle of zest in or on baked goodies, and also a drizzle of home-made lemon syrup. Don’t forget lemon tarts and lemon meringue pie.

A change from traditional orange and grapefruit marmalades, the lemon variety is tangy and zingy on the tastebuds, and aside from livening up your morning toast, can be used numerous ways for delicious desserts and baking too.

Bottling lemons means you can enjoy them long after their season has closed. Try Annabel Langbein’s easy preserving recipe, after which you can use them in a myriad of dishes especially Moroccan cuisine, stews and tagines.

Homemade lemon curd is another easy way to use up surplus lemons. Ingredients include butter, eggs and juicy lemons. If you’re making a Pavlova, save the egg yolks and make lemon curd. It tastes great as a pav topping.

Lemons make a great variety of thirstquenching drinks such as homemade lemonade, lemon cordial and even limoncello if you’re game. Packed full of Vitamin C, they also make a revitalising hot toddy mixed with honey and hot water.

Serves 4-6

Method 1.

Combine all curd ingredients in a saucepan. Whisk gently over a low heat until thick, about 8 minutes. Make sure the mixture never boils or sticks to the base of the pan.

Once the curd is thick, pour into a jug, cover tightly with cling film and place in the fridge to completely cool.

6 egg yolks 100g caster sugar 400ml tropical fruit juice 45g butter 1 lime, zest & juice 35g corn flour

200g plain flour 45g desiccated coconut 100g butter 1 Tbsp icing sugar 2-3 Tbsp water

Meringue

2 egg whites 100g caster sugar

Bring the mixture together with 2-3 tablespoons of water to form a stiff dough. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. When chilled, roll out the pastry on a floured surface and then line the skillet, allowing the pastry to slightly overhang the side.

Pierce the pastry several times with a fork, line with parchment paper and fill the pastry case with baking beans or rice.

Bake for 10 minutes. Remove baking beans or rice and bake for a further 8 minutes. Remove from oven and cool slightly.

When the curd has completely cooled, pour into pastry and set aside whilst you make the meringue.

In a very clean bowl, whisk the egg whites until firm and fluffy. Using a tablespoon, slowly add spoonfuls of sugar whilst continuously whisking. Once all the sugar is incorporated, continue to whisk until firm glossy peaks form.

Spoon the meringue into a piping bag and pipe meringue kisses on top of the curd and sprinkle with coconut. Bake for a further 15 minutes.

Remove from the oven and finish with lime zest.

To serve

Zest of 1 lime 20g coconut flakes, toasted

Place the flour, butter, icing sugar and desiccated coconut in a food processor. Pulse to create a fine breadcrumb texture.

Here comes the sun Longer days equate to more sun and time spent relaxing in our sunniest spots. Many homes have sun rooms, positioned where best to capture the warm rays. Of course it doesn’t have to be a whole room, maybe just a sunny corner with some cosy chairs, a coffee table, a few books, a rug and some soft cushions. Here are some suggestions from Metropol.

Furniture

White is ideal for a sunroom because it helps to enhance the airy mood of the space. Paint the walls and ceiling white or light colours, and use floaty, airy window treatments, and white or bright coloured contrast furniture. A mid-coloured floor will help to keep the room grounded.

Comfy cosy is the order of the day with sofas and chairs. Wicker works well too, as do slatted wooden beach-style chairs with soft cushions. Add a few throws and pillows, some potted plants, maybe a drinks trolley, and a coffee table laden with books and Metropol magazines.

These days, the word ‘containers’ conjures up the big steel rectangles stuck either in the Suez Canal or the wrong ports. But gardeners know that there’s another whole world of containers that can always be in the right place.

Short of space or sunshine?

Want to get creative?

Containers are your answer because of their flexibility; most food-producing plants prefer full sun for maximum production, but some prefer part shade especially in the hot season (e.g. coriander, broccoli, pak choi, spinach, and rhubarb), which means you can give everything prime position as the seasons change. Avoid using smaller pots which are limiting when it comes to crop choices. And of course, a VegePod is the ultimate in container gardening. Raised timber beds (or corrugated iron) are another good option as most fruit and vegetables prefer good drainage, which you also get with containers. Raised beds make for easy maintenance not only because of easy access, but several beds are less daunting work-wise than one big single space. The key to success with any gardening is the soil/potting mix, so always use premium quality. High quality potting mix will contain controlled-release fertilisers, Saturaid for even water distribution, and the correct micro-nutrients for the crop being grown.

Then add structures to the design for container/raised beds with obelisks, or wooden frames with vertical stringing for climbing beans, peas, and sweet peas. Add companion plants that will not only improve the health and yield of your crops but make any garden a work of art.

What to grow?

Marigolds can be planted with just about anything (except cabbages) to deter soil nematodes and attract beneficial insects that will deal with the ‘bad boys’. Lavender attracts bees and repels insects, and rosemary protects against insects on beans, carrots and cabbages. Basil planted as a border with tomatoes deters insects, improves tomato flavour, and attracts bees. Nasturtiums deter insects and the flowers are edible, as are viola flowers.

Just about anything edible! Patio dwarf fruit trees make a productive centrepiece. A garden divided into quarters containing strawberries, coriander, green lettuces, and red lettuces has good colour, contrast and interest. Broad beans and dwarf beans are best grown in rows for easy picking but most other crops are fine grown in the quarters of a raised bed. Wicked range of wicker Indonesia has some of the ﬁnest textile weavers in the world and the villages of West Java are renowned for their centuries-old artisanal traditions.

t was during a backpacking trip around Indonesia in the 1980s that a young New Zealand designer, Neil Briden, first came across hand-woven rattan furniture. This is where the WovenVeranda story begins. Sales manager Lisa Lloyd-Thwaites, says Neil was impressed by the 150 yearold weaving traditions he witnessed and wanted to incorporate them into his own designs. “He was living in Sweden and his designs were Scandinavian-inspired. So he needed a manufacturer who could bring those to life.” Lisa says he found the right manufacturer and the business relationship and friendship has been strong ever since.

He saw that bonds are created and strengthened when family members work together, taking turns learning and using the various techniques in the process.

The furniture frames are manufactured at the factory in the city of Cirebon, then delivered to surrounding villages where the weaving is done. “The fact that the weaving was a community enterprise really left an impression on Neil. He liked that the whole village would have a sense of ownership of the product,” says Lisa. “He saw that bonds are created and strengthened when family members work together, taking turns learning and using the various techniques in the process. And have great social interactions at the same time.” As they say, you can’t stop progress. The wicker furniture range has expanded to include indoor and outdoor ranges, which are made from different materials for different purposes, and to handle different environmental conditions. The outdoor range is designed for the varied, harsh European environment and copes with the extreme cold and high UV rays. Perfect for New Zealand’s changeable weather. Synthetic (polycarbonate) UV stabilised wicker is woven over commercial grade aluminium framing, which means no rusting. For indoors, the furniture is made from plant-sourced, natural wicker cane, woven on natural rattan tube framing. The chair cushion covers are 100 percent natural cotton. Clever, attention to detail sets the furniture above your run-of-the-mill wicker. “One great example of this is the design of the dining chairs,” says Lisa. “They have a concave area around the lower legs or feet. This accommodates natural body movement while sitting at a table. Very comfy.” Teak is highly featured in the dining and coffee tables and Lisa says it is all certified sustainable plantation teak, which has a lovely rustic look. Contemporary design at its best I

The building makes a bold statement on its Sumner Esplanade site. Not only that, but its size and design definitely attract glances and comments from people walking by. There are in fact two dwellings here. That was part of the brief for the architects of MC Architecture Studio – a main house of 240 sq metres and a small apartment alongside.

t was a challenge to accommodate both buildings on the site,” says Massimiliano Capocaccia of MC Architecture. “The solution was to build up, to maximise the height of the building as much as allowable, which also gives the greatest access to the wonderful view of the ocean and across to the mountains.” The stepped levels of the two dwellings give the impression of a fragmented yet geometrical building that is wrapped with a timber skin. “The design idea was to have square and rectangular forms added and subtracted from the skin like a painting on a canvas“ The materials used add to the artistic effect. Cedar that will silver down is the main cladding, while stone tiles on one side of the main house also laid in squares and rectangles, add to the pleasing aesthetic. Constructing this complex design was a privilege for Steve Brown Builders. “It was certainly a different build,” says Steve Brown. “challenging, but a lot of fun. It’s the kind of project that really

engages me as a builder.” The tight site and the proximity to passing pedestrians made both access and use of equipment difficult. “We had to make multiple crane lifts from the street bringing in the required structural steel and cross laminated timber and there is no space on the site to store materials or equipment.” Steve says that a significant aspect of his company’s work involved all the internal finishes. “The joinery is complex, detailed and very slick using a variety of different timbers – from purple heart timber on the entry decking to oiled oak for the floors, Nordic spruce for the ceilings and rosewood for the staircase features. The designs on some of the doors even echo the squares and rectangles of the main house itself.” At the end of a very satisfying two year build, the house is ready for occupation and to continue to be the object of admiring looks for many years to come. www.mcarchstudio.nz

t $85,500 plus ORC, the EQA 250 just falls short of the Government’s criteria for the Clean Car Rebate. However, when you compare it to other luxury BEVs in this price bracket, the EQA presents itself as decent value. Looks wise, the EQA still mostly resembles the petrol powered GLA on which it’s based. However, instead of a front grill, you get a gloss black panel between a set of svelte LED headlights and a handsome LED lightbar at the rear. Also, those swish 20-inch AMG Alloys were icing on the cake. The EQA’s interior is very much a case of GLA déjà vu. The switchgear, steering wheel and the MBUX 10.25-inch dual screen infotainment system being the most obvious aspects. Mercedes’ Driver Assistance package which includes features like Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Steering, and Lane Keep Assist comes as standard, as does Mercedes-Me Connect. All the features are a doddle to use. Then again, you can simply utilise the “Hey Mercedes” feature like Siri or Alexa to operate most of them if you prefer. The heated leather seats serve up a good level of comfort and lateral support. Plus, once you are cocooned by your surroundings, there is a feeling of real quality in here. With a single E-motor and battery pack producing a combined 140kW

and 375Nm of torque, Mercedes claims electric range of 410km and while using a Type 2 fast-charging system, the EQA will recharge back to 80 percent full in a snip over half an hour. Flicking up and down on the shift paddles allows you to choose from four levels of regenerative braking, with the two negative stages providing some serious braking power while giving back some extra electric oomph. The EQA 250 is not what one would call brisk. However, the instant torque of an electric motor makes itself known when you flick over to ‘sport’ mode. It isn’t featherweight, but it can still dart around corners with plenty of pomp and ceremony should the need arise. While more than able to deliver a spirited drive, the EQA is much more at home sipping on the electric juice and prompting you to drive as economical as possible. Simply stick it in Comfort or Eco mode, and supple silent running becomes a soothing pastime. Ride quality is also very good, as is that beautifully symphonic Burmester Sound System. While not perfect, the EQA 250 is certainly a well-rounded, well-priced luxury BEV. It will come as no surprise if Mercedes shift a fair number of these while their EV family continues to grow over the coming years. All in all, this one is worth checking out.

It’s no secret the new Honda Jazz makes no bones about being one of the top choices in the supermini segment. Now the fourth generation Jazz goes full electric, well almost. Enter the Jazz e:HEV Luxe.

nder the bonnet is sits the petrol Jazz’s 1.5L four-cylinder engine with the addition of two electric motors. Being the range topper, the e:HEV Luxe ticks every option box on Honda’s spec sheet which includes Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, Honda’s Sensing Safety Suite and heated seats.

You also get the option of two-leather trim which in my opinion looks the business, as does the very clear and concise infotainment system. On the move, the e:HEV does its utmost to champion electric silent running over petrol power, with the petrol engine acting purely as a
