City mojo

The news is out. Christchurch is (arguably) the best city in New Zealand to live, work, and to play in, and visit.

All sorts of people call the city home, and among them is television and radio presenter Jack Tame. Earlier this month he took to the airwaves, on NewstalkZB to tell the

country that in his opinion, for the first time since 2010, his beloved city is now better than it was before the earthquakes.

Jack was on a visit to his home city, running around Hagley Park, when he had this light bulb moment.

A Cantabrian at heart, he says emphatically that Ōtautahi has crossed a threshold, and although it’s good now, it can evolve to be better.

For Jack it is a myriad of changes, including progress on the Cathedral, Te Pae Convention Centre, Tūranga library, the good food, cheaper housing than Auckland, the influx of young people, and the emerging shape and energy of the city.

Like many Cantabrians, he’s under no illusion that more hard work is ahead. Also like many of us, Jack believes that with continuing good leadership and planning, the city will rise to greater heights, especially with the projects such as Te Kaha.

I’m with Jack on that. As he says, “Christchurch has energy. Christchurch has mojo. Christchurch is better than ever.”

Ōtautahi has been my home for more than two years now, and even in that short time there have been many exciting changes, driven by people who are also true believers. Debate is essential for progress, and so too is Christchurch’s continuing evolution. Become a believer in our city.

The best way to describe Gemma McCaw’s life right now is, to quote her, “in the thick of parenting”.

These days the former Black Sticks wonder woman, Olympian, and women’s wellness coach is more likely to be found cuddling one of her daughters, as she is running around with a hockey stick in her hand.

Gemma and husband Richie welcomed their third daughter, Ella, in April; a little sister for Charlotte, who is four, and Grace, who is two. “Three kids under five is definitely full on,” she says, quick to add that her newest is “such a delight”, and it’s been lovely seeing the older girls embrace their new little member of the family.

Life in the McCaw household includes plenty of chaotic moments, yet Gemma wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m right where I want to be, and am keenly aware that this period of our lives is special. It’s time we’ll never get back,” she explains.

“I would say the past five years have been the busiest of my life, but absolutely the happiest, too. I find it incredibly fulfilling watching my babies grow.”

One thing Gemma did di erently this time around was to really focus on rest for the first four weeks after Ella was born. “I took time out from work, stayed at home mostly, and really just focused on our little family. Parenthood feels a lot like stripping life back to basics. It’s the simple things that count. Being there and being present is everything.”

Gemma retired from hockey in 2020, but sport still plays a huge role in the way she approaches life. “The lessons I learnt being an athlete are with me every single day, like prioritising sleep, ensuring I exercise, and understanding the importance of good food.

“Sport teaches you so much about working together as a team, managing disappointment and building resilience, and they’re lessons that can be applied in all parts of life.”

She misses the connections made in sport, and being part of a team environment, but is now equally dedicated to Team McCaw family activities. One of her joys as a mother is encouraging the girls to learn by watching their parents, and being active. “My wish for them is that they’ll be involved in sport for life, regardless of what level they play at.”

On a personal level, Gemma finds inspiration from the amazing female role models she has had throughout her life. “My family and friends, and people I’ve worked alongside, I have learnt so much from many di erent women.

“Closest to home, my mum Michelle and nana Yvonne are my biggest inspirations. They’re the hardest workers I know, are incredibly selfless, and always give their time to others. They’re nurturing and loving, and the best examples of strong women I can think of. I know my maternal, nurturing traits have come from them.”

Reading other women’s stories also provides inspiration. “I get so much from learning about others’ perspectives, and not necessarily sportswomen. I love reading about people like

Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama, who’ve been through hard times but now help and connect with others.

“Often, I will see other women just going about their days, dropping their kids at preschool or rushing to work, and I admire them, too. As they say, ain’t no hood like motherhood. I think we can all learn from each other.”

On the business front, Gemma is excited about planning her first South Island women’s wellness retreat. To be held at a luxury Canterbury location from 24-26 November, the retreat will o er like-minded women the chance to step away from their hectic lives for a blissful three days of rest and rejuvenation.

Gemma will be joined by health and wellness experts to guide the group on “an unforgettable journey, allowing women to unwind and reset, and providing vital skills to take home with them for healthier and happier lives”.

“I love working with women, and I always say it’s often the smallest changes that can bring about the biggest results.”

“My top tips for women would be”:

Prioritise sleep and it will help you in every area of your life

Be present and always make time for your relationships – they are what make life meaningful. Move your body every day – something is always better than nothing.

Most importantly, I would urge other women to be confident in who you are. Don’t let anyone else’s opinion define you. You are a unique gift to the world, remember that!

Juggling family life, work, and “me time” keeps Gemma McCaw busy. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch asks how she successfully balances being a wife, mother, and entrepreneur.

The Briscoes Lady is so deeply embedded into Kiwi culture that she has already achieved icon status, popping into the lyrics of Don McGlashan’s ‘Marvellous Year’, being fantasised about in the play ‘Mamil’, having her face tattooed on to a Whakatane DJ’s leg, and, most recently, becoming a GIF.

On a personal level, while celebrity recognition undoubtedly has its downside, the upside is that it can be used as a tool for good, and paying it forward is something Tammy Wells is passionate about.

“In those early days with Christchurch City Mission, I did a lot with them. Nowadays, when an organisation invites me to speak about being The Briscoes Lady, I’m happy to do it but ask that they give a good donation to the City Mission.”

Tammy’s Briscoes Lady has so long proved herself the ultimate ambassador for the brand, that the temptation to ask if there is any particular instore merchandise that she covets above others is irresistible.

The question is promptly answered. “The linen sheets. Personally, when travelling for my work, I don’t like cotton sheets. They’re cold and noisy; whereas linen sheets are quiet

and warm. Briscoes linen sheets are my fave.”

Tammy describes herself as a private person who cherishes her downtime with family – her husband, Michael, and their two sons, who both recently married. “We adore our daughter-in-law and son-in-law and feel so blessed. It’s lovely to see them all in a settled and happy place.”

A typical day away from the cameras sees Tammy either before her easel, “I love creating with colour, and the colours that happen on the canvas - what comes out - it’s a learning curve in itself,” or working alongside Michael in the garden of the family home they have resided at for 38 years.

“Sometimes when I’m being The Briscoes Lady instore and meeting our wonderful customers, that’s amazing, but it’s also intense. As my character, I’m being hugged and photographed and filmed, so it’s lovely to return home to the peace and quiet and the bellbirds.”

As Michael has long championed Tammy’s career in front of the spotlight, Tammy is now championing Michael’s new career as a sculptor.

Michael’s sculpting began after his retiring from dairy farming and ramped up during lockdown. His Corten steel

artworks are drawn from shapes and forms in life, and range from small ornamental barbedwire bird nests through to magnificent large orbs, balls, and link-like structures.

Tammy says their property will open to Garden Clubs for the first time, this spring, showcasing Michael’s work.

“Corten steel looks beautiful amongst green surroundings. Nature has so much rust colour in itself.”

Work and home-life aside, another burning question that needs to be answered is what is Tammy’s secret to looking so vivacious?

“Number one is smiling. Smiling is key because smiling lifts your face. I’m also lucky that I have a team doing my hair, my make-up, my clothes, and fabulous lighting guys.”

Tammy says that having an inner contentedness helps too. “Surround yourself with good people who help to lift you up. Realise that you are beautiful as you are. Youth is beautiful, but so is age. All ages are beautiful. We need to make the most of the age we are at.”

As for retirement, there are no plans for that.

“My employer at Briscoes said to me right at the start that he visualised us both still going strong into our old age. So, as long as I can keep going and they keep saying, ‘Let’s get Tammy up to Auckland’, I will still be The Briscoes Lady.”

Rosie Kelly played for the winning side, Matatū, in last year’s inaugural season of Super Rugby Aupiki, but now there’s a new jersey on the horizon for her.

Sporting a Black Ferns jersey didn’t seem possible until Rosie shared a room with women’s rugby legend Ruby Tui at a provincial nationals sevens tournament. While her brother initially introduced Rosie to the game, it was Ruby who initiated the dream.

“That’s when I found out she was from the West Coast,” laughs Rosie.

For Hokitika born and bred Rosie, connecting with someone who followed a similar pathway and ended up a household name was a defining moment in her fledgling career. She describes that realisation as “crazy,” and reminded herself “you can definitely be there too.”

Growing up on the coast, Rosie could be found outside, playing games with her brother and friends, and learning any sport she could. “I was the ultimate tomboy,” she says. Her brother was three years older and her dad was the coach of his team, and while the level of rugby was out of her league, she always joined in.

“I definitely looked up to him throughout my childhood. I was in awe of him.”

That coaching expertise and fatherly support helped push Rosie to reach for the stars. In the rain after school when everyone else was inside, Rosie was training, her dad reminding her that “nothing comes easy”. She labels it as her “fondest and almost worst memory at the same time”, saying that the work ethic she gained from her dad was a catalyst in achieving her goals.

Fast-forward, and with hard work comes big returns. Just one week after Super Rugby Aupiki ended, Rosie was ready to jump

a life-changing phone call. Rosie was asked to re-think her Japan contract because she was being o ered something a whole lot better. The rest of that phone call blended into a haze of excitement and shock. “It was a crazy week of emotions,” she says.

Now on a full-time rugby contract, Rosie’s days are di erent, yet just as busy as her years balancing study, work and training. Travelling with her teammates, gym, speed and mental skills analysis sessions, leadership workshops and club rugby, it’s hard to believe that she has any free time.

When she does, it’s “anything but rugby”. A qualified physiotherapist, Rosie dreams of eventually applying her knowledge to a high-performance team, although for now she’s focused on embracing the experience she’s worked so hard to be a part of.

Making so many new rugby connections has been great, she says. “I’m literally now working every day with my best friends. They’re not just teammates.” She still has friends on the field who she made after moving to Christchurch Girls High School, aged 13, for its women’s rugby programme.

Opportunity hasn’t come without pressure though. Rosie says that the hardest part has been finding a life/rugby balance. After a “go-go-go” 2022, she finds she now has more time training with the Black Ferns to focus on her game and skills, and she’s learnt to schedule downtime into each day to feel connected, motivated and present. “It’s about letting myself be happy, remembering that nobody is perfect, and being my own person.

“I’ve got to be myself. That’s what got me my contract.”

This is the second home Cameron and his team have sold for us and we continue to be impressed with his work ethic and positive attitude. He is Number One for a good reason. We felt completely looked after and supported throughout the campaign.

Director Cheryl Cordier, who has a background in education, says “we combine the joy of creating with food, the life skills of knowing your way around a kitchen, and of course the children are getting practical experience with their reading and maths as they interpret the recipes.”

While having fun together, children learn about hygiene, safety, and good kitchen practice. “We also focus on learning to make healthy food, along with a few treats,” says Cheryl.

NEW HANMER TRACK

The Te Tihi o Rauhea/Conical Hill Loop Trail is around 6kms long, taking between 90 -120 minutes to walk.

The trail can be accessed from several points and the signs (such as the one pictured) can be followed in either direction.

For instance, if starting at the Cenotaph the walk goes up the rise into Hanmer Springs, north through the oaks crossing Jacks Pass Road into the centre of town crossing the road opposite about the 4 Square. From there it proceeds north to the top of the hill, and it is recommended you turn left at the top to the lookout.

Once back on the track, walk north again for a short distance and descend

the east side turning left onto the Majuba Track. This is a steep section which may be omitted if you walk in the other direction.

At the bottom the walk passes two woodland ponds and a wetland area, down a set of stairs, crosses Jollies Pass Road, heading on to Brooke Dawson Reserve, and Leamington Street back to the Cenotaph.

Hanmer Springs Community Board member Chris Hughey says he came up with the idea a few years ago, designed the route and the signs for it, and the board agreed to fund it. The Hanmer Springs Track Network Group was given the project to bring it to fruition.

Weaponising sexual abuse claims

The Ministry of Justice New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey claims 94% percent of sexual assaults are not reported to Police. However what is rarely commented on is the weaponisation of sexual abuse claims, which overwhelmingly puts men at huge risk.

Recently I dealt with a client who went to a social function, and drank more than he should have, before encouraging a lady to join him and his work colleagues in a drinking game. The lady declined his invitation, and soon after commented to security that she felt this person had invaded her personal space (which was undeniably true). A few weeks later my client’s (male) manager turned her comment into an allegation of sexual abuse, even though the lady involved never made a written complaint about anything to anyone, and there were no witnesses, only a second-hand report of what a security guard had allegedly said. My client (married with children) was devastated, and resigned from a well-paid job with a well-respected employer.

One could rightly argue that he’d been exceedingly foolish, and the author of his own misfortune, but that minimises his manager’s decision to make a devastating allegation, without any actual evidence. To fight such an allegation was likely to be career damaging, regardless of the outcome. The result was a high performing and wellregarded colleague was removed from the workplace, we suspect because he commented a little too often that his manager was not doing his job very well. We’ve been anticipating it for a while and now it looks like we’ve arrived at the peak of interest rates – and what will probably be a turning point in the market.

In late May, the Reserve Bank raised the OCR (O cial Cash Rate) by 0.25 basis points, a move that came as no surprise to anyone. At the time, they signalled every intention of holding the OCR at that level for the next 12 months. It remains our belief, however, that by the end of 2023, interest rates will be on their way down, albeit gradually.

There is a feeling of change in the air. We are seeing borrowers begin to act in anticipation of interest rates reducing. We’ve particularly noticed a change with property investors. They’ve been very, very quiet over the past 18 months. In the last few weeks, this market has really begun picking up.

Investors and home buyers alike will also take heart in the easing of LVR restrictions that took place on 1 June 2023.

All in all, the market is poised for an upswing, though not as dramatic as we have seen in recent years.

She is used to balancing family, and work, especially with the arrival in April of baby daughter Ella, (see pages 8 and 9).

“My biggest advice for working mums is to prioritise sleep. Women have a huge amount on their plates, and it’s impossible to juggle it all when you’re running on nothing. Sleep can go such a long way to ensuring we’re at our best.

“It’s also important to remember that we don’t need to be perfect, and it’s okay not to have everything in order. This morning I chose to go for a run with the pram instead of cleaning up the house first. It was a mess, the beds were unmade, there were oats all over the bench, but I knew I’d feel so much better if I got a bit of exercise in. And I did, it set me up for the day and I feel good. Housework can always wait.”

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness month, and throughout Aotearoa people have been participating in the Move your Butt campaign to raise funds to help Kiwis beat bowel cancer. Last year’s challenge raised nearly $170,000 towards bowel cancer research, awareness, education, support and advocacy.

The disease is treatable (and often beatable) if caught early, making it essential that as many people as possible are aware of the symptoms, says the Bowel Cancer New Zealand organisation.

“Symptoms may come and go, so don’t wait if you have any of these concerns, no matter what age you are,” says a spokesman. “See your GP right away.”

While bowel cancer is more common in the 50 years + age group, it a ects people of all ages. If told that you are too young to have bowel cancer, seek a second opinion, the organisation recommends.

The National Bowel Screening Programme is available for eligible men and women, aged 60 to 74.

Bowel cancer, sometimes called colorectal cancer, is cancer in any part of the large bowel, which includes the colon and rectum, and starts with the abnormal growth of cells into lumps or tumours. Risk factors include aging, smoking tobacco, being overweight or obese, drinking alcohol, not exercising often, having Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis for more than 10 years, and a family history.

FACTS

The incidence of bowel cancer in New Zealand is one of the highest in the world.

More than 350 people under 50 are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year.

Estimates are that one in every 18 New Zealanders will develop bowel cancer in their lifetime.

Men are at increased risk of bowel cancer than women.

SYMPTOMS

These may include:

Bleeding from the bottom (rectal bleeding)

Change of bowel motions/habits that come and go over several weeks

Anaemia

Severe persistent or periodic abdominal pain

A lump or mass in the abdomen

Tiredness and loss of weight for no obvious reason

STEPS TO TAKE

Numerous studies have indicated that a diet too rich in red meat and processed foods can heighten the risk of bowel cancer. To help prevent bowel cancer enjoy a wide variety of:

The good team at Wigram Brewing Co have sorted this with their range of Dog Beer. Developed with their own dog, Blitza, and the ritual of sharing a beer with your mates, in mind, the lipsmacking doggie draught was created.

“We did a bit of research as to what could go into our Dog Beer – what would

be super tasty and also good for them at the same time,” says Caroline McGurk, at Wigram Brewing Co. “We went ahead and developed the recipe using the Little Bone Broth Company’s broth, added a few secret ingredients, vigorously tested it on a handpicked panel – Blitza and friends – elevated the data, and Dog Beer was born.” The team have been amazed at

Exploring Wigram

Southwest of Christchurch’s city centre, Wigram has experienced considerable growth during the past decade.

Today it is home to a variety of cafes, restaurants, licensed premises, and retail outlets, with a population of 11,102 just a year ago.

While close to Hornby’s retail zone, Wigram has its own expanding business hub, in addition to a variety of new and established housing developments. Post-earthquake, it is one of the region’s fastest growing satellite towns.

Named after a former mayor of Christchurch, Sir Henry Wigram, the suburb is largely known for its links to the region’s aviation history. Sir Henry established a flying school there in 1916, which was bought by the then government seven years later, and run as a military airbase.

In June 1923 the base was o cially handed over and renamed Wigram Aerodrome.

Home to RNZAF base Wigram, until military cutbacks closed it in 1995, it has since been developed into housing and an industrial estate, although it still houses the popular Air Force Museum of New Zealand.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup cooked, shredded, chicken or turkey

3/4 cup finely chopped ham

125g cream cheese

1 Tbsp chives, finely cut

2 Tbsp chicken stock

30g butter, melted

Crackers or crusty bread to serve

METHOD

Combine all the ingredients, except the butter, into a food processor, and blitz until smooth. 1

Spoon into 1 large or six 1/2 cup ramekins. Smooth the surface, and pour melted butter over the top.

Cover, and chill for at least an hour before serving.

Tip: Add a tablespoon of your favourite herbs instead of chives.

If you’re looking for something culinary to do with leftover chicken (or turkey at Christmas), try this quick and easy pâté recipe.

Chicken and Pork terrine

Closer to a meatloaf than a pâté, with chunkier forcemeat, a terrine is a tasty treat as a starter, part of an antipasto platter, or served with a salad for lunch. This is a basic recipe, where chicken can be substituted for turkey, and raisins, pistachios, hard boiled eggs, and even cranberries, can be added to the mix.

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp olive oil, plus extra to brush

1 onion, finely chopped

2 Tbsp brandy, optional

12 rashers smoked streaky bacon

2 skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1cm pieces

500g pork mince

50g pistachios, roughly chopped

50g dried cranberries, or raisins

3/4 Tsp freshly grated nutmeg

2 thyme sprigs, leaves picked o

Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

Serves: 8 to 10 | Prep Time: 30 mins | Cook Time: 2 hrs 10 mins

Heat the oil in a medium pan and gently cook the onion for 10min until softened. Add the brandy, if using, and bubble for 30 seconds, then tip mixture into a large bowl and set aside to cool.

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Use about 10 of the bacon rashers to line the inside of a 900g loaf tin with bacon, leaving excess hanging over the sides. Add remaining ingredients to onion mix, and season to taste. Mix together.

Press the mixture into the loaf tin, levelling the surface. Fold any overhanging bacon over the filling; cover with remaining rashers. Press down again to make sure the surface is smooth. Lightly oil a small sheet of aluminium foil and press on top of the loaf tin. Wrap tin well in a further double layer of foil, then put into a roasting pan.

Half-fill the roasting tin with boiling water, and transfer to oven. Cook for 90 minutes until the terrine feels solid when pressed. Remove from oven and unwrap the outer layers of foil, leaving the greased foil layer in place). Pour out any excess liquid, and leave to cool.

Sit the loaf tin on a plate, and put a clean brick (if you have one), or several full food cans on top of the terrine (resting on the foil layer). Chill overnight. 5

To serve, preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan), unmould the terrine on to a baking tray and lightly brush with oil. Brown in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Slice and serve warm, or at room temperature.

TIPS

Hard boil three eggs and layer through the middle of the terrine before baking.

Add one tablespoon each of orange and lemon zest to the mix.

Swap brandy for an orange liqueur.

The noise cancelling isn’t quite as good as Sony’s high-end units, but enough to drown out o ce chatter and background gym music.

Here are some:

Chimonanthus praecox (wintersweet) is well known for its winter fragrance, and the clear yellow bells of Luteus, or the red-marked form, Grandiflorus. Look out for Trenython with creamy, almost white, flowers brightly marked in red and an unusually powerful scent.

Sarcococca (Christmas box) are evergreens with glossy pointed foliage, gorgeous white flowers, and an unmissable scent. Various cultivars range in height from 60cm to 2m.

Lonicera (scented bushy honeysuckles) are well known, and easily grown, although best against a wall in winter. Look out for pink flowering varieties.

Viburnum × bodnantense (winter-flowering viburnum) is popular, especially the Dawn cultivar. For a brighter pink, more fragrant flower try Charles Lamont. Viburnums flower intermittently from early winter into spring.

Hamamelis (witch hazels) come in a variety of cultivar, many brightly coloured, but not all are scented so be careful. Look out for Angelly (pale yellow), Arnold Promise (lemon), Aurora (yellow and red), Imperialis (pale yellow), Jermyn’s Gold (gold), and Vesna (pale orange).

If you haven’t already been in a discussion where Artificial Intelligence and its consequences were part of the narrative then, I can assure you, it won’t be long before you will be.

Artificial Intelligence or ‘AI’ (or ‘ChatGPT’, in its latest, extraordinarily popular, iteration) put very simply and in layman’s terms involves the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer-based systems.

It’s not a completely new phenomenon, as many of us already utilize technologies that allow for this, such as when we access face recognition on our phones or summon up the ever helpful and obliging Suri for Apple or Alexa for Amazon. But the scope for AI to be used to a much greater level is enormous. You see, it can undertake huge numbers of tasks and processes, including repetitive ones, with the benefit of never experiencing fatigue. It can analyze, categorize and classify millions of data points which, when applied in different circumstances, can solve complex problems, thus making daily lives easier. But with this ability and prescribed benefit there’s also a deeper question. If it can do all these tasks, what does that mean for the people who are currently doing them or parts of them? And that’s a big question being asked in tearooms and boardrooms everywhere.

I recently received a local building products information booklet which had as a headline “Is Artificial Intelligence a threat to your job?” and it quoted a Goldman Sachs report from March of this year that suggested up to 300 million jobs in America and Europe could be affected in the future. This suggests a kind of future none of us would happily envisage.

It didn’t provide a timeline for this to start happening, but even posing the question sends shivers down numerous spines, including my own. The reassuring point the article did make, however, and additional

research supported, was that “critical decision-making, creativity, problemsolving, collaboration and activities that require human judgment and adaptability can’t be duplicated.”

The very things that make humanity unique also remain the most difficult to duplicate despite the power of millions of algorithms doing their thing – and we can be grateful for that. Currently I’m seeing the use of AI in our own industry in written applications, where a quick question to ChatGPT is able to produce smart advertising text, property summaries and reports that look and sound both accurate and polished, a far cry from some of the ones I’ve read over the years. So that’s a positive whilst I wait to see how else we will utilize the varying technologies. A quick Google search suggests the kinds of occupations that have reason for concern in the future and given I have colleagues and friends in such roles I’m choosing not to highlight them. Safer from AI dominance are positions like plumbers, painters, barbers, athletes and anything where creative thinking, good judgement, cultural nuance and the ability to read human social clues is needed.

At the moment I like to think that’s where other real estate professionals and I are currently found, but we now know you can never, ever sit still for too long.

New Zealand’s remotest outpost is now just a video call away with Antarctica New Zealand installing Starlink at Scott Base to improve connectivity.

The aim is to give scientists access to modern digital software tools while they are working at the Ross Island research station, some 3800km from New Zealand. The increased capacity and speed of the connection means the experience should be similar to working from home.

Antarctica New Zealand’s chief scientific advisor Jordy Hendrikx says the Starlink trial is a significant step up in

communications capability for scientists that work from the base, opening up access to data, large files, organisational communication and collaboration tools, as well as Wi-Fi and mobile phones.

“It’ll be a di erent world.

“This could be a new era of real-time collaboration for Scott Base, with new levels of interaction for inter-disciplinary teams and analysts, both in New Zealand and around the world,” Dr Hendrikx says.

Scott Base’s first data connection to the outside world came in 1992 when Telecom NZ, in partnership with then Antarctic division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), completed the installation of a satellite earth station at nearby Arrival Heights. Before that, it was high frequency radio and letters. Until now, movies were watched on DVDs.

Business update

Every three months we run the Quarterly Canterbury Business Survey, which gathers insights from the wider business community.

The survey looks at their confidence in the economy, their own performance, and their expectations looking forward for things like investment in plant and equipment, and bringing on more sta . We also ask what barriers they face which are getting in the way of doing those things.

Results during the last year have broadly showed that businesses in Canterbury are optimistic about their own earnings, but remain concerned about the direction of the economy in general. This concern is generally born from barriers to growth and productivity, such as labour market constraints and immigration settings, inflationary pressure and rising interest rates, and falling consumer demand.

What has changed recently is the growing concern about rising costs. Where labour

market constraints had previously been the biggest concern, struggling to find sta post-Covid-19, they are now increasingly concerned about the growing increase in costs, which seem to pile on from all directions.

The concern about inflation and rising interest rates may seem obvious as they are the same costs you are facing at home, but when we combine those costs with what businesses tell us is a barrage of additional costs, including compliance burden, the result is businesses are less confident.

What’s the solution?

Just like households, for businesses to be confident and invest they need to operate in an environment where costs can be managed and predicted, and where there aren’t additional or counterproductive costs being added to the mix.

Kitchen islands and breakfast bars dominated the home kitchen entries, with popular materials used including engineered stone, and porcelain, plus a variety of wood such as American white oak, spotted gum, honey ash, and Australia blackbutt timber. Black, white and brown hued islands were accented with the warmth of light and dark wood, and stainless steel, brass, copper and black fittings.

Lighting trends include stylish glass and metal pendants, along with subtle under bench, and shelf LEDS.

Colour popped up in a few (mainly commercial) entries, but not many. Most kitchens feature black and white, or brown and cream, and plenty of space.

EXCITING TRENDS

SPACIOUS MULTI-PURPOSE ROOMS - the open plan kitchen is still popular, and design reflects that with breakfast bars, large islands, and butler’s pantries to extend their reach. Some kitchens also encompass spaces such as a handy guest bathroom, and dining areas. Connectivity and continuous visibility are also influencing how home owners want their kitchens to look and function.

LARGE WINDOWS - a focal point for many kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas. In some designs window walls separate area for functional purposes, and to let nature and the sun shine through. Window and wooden slatted features slide into wall pockets, and low-emission window (and doors) are part of current kitchen trends.

DUPLICATION - More use of kitchens as the heart of the home has resulted in doubling up on fixtures, and, in some instances, on appliance too. Sinks, ovens, and dishwashers are common double-ups, and sometimes duplicate islands

DARK VS LIGHT - rich dark wood cabinetry is being o set with lighter bench tops, especially quartz and composites, such as sintered stone, that are non-porous, stain resistant, and easy to maintain.

TRADITIONAL STYLE - are being introduced by way of pendant lighting, and classic beaded inset cabinets.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS - are a top priority in many kitchen (and bathroom designs) to hide clutter. Solutions include walk-in and pull-out pantries, and integrated panels to hide appliances.

“Our clients’ intentions were to renovate and sell their home, but they love the refurbishment so much they have decided to stay,” says Sydenham Joinery Company Director Grant Weston.

Lighting is a central part of the design. Warm light washes from above and below the large wall of cabinetry, as the island light shines out from the very inside edge of the stone bench. “The client has since talked about how they enjoy an evening view of the city, the house lit only by the kitchen and fireplace lighting, a testament to how exceptional design can blend seamlessly with practicality.”

The main back wall of the kitchen stretches seven plus metres, constructed with sleek-looking Prime Black Matte Soft Touch. A subtle feature of the wall is American White Oak Veneer, framing the darker cabinetry.

Proving that with an excellent design and production team, a kitchen can be both cost e ective and a leader in its field, this design won the Canterbury and the national 2023 Master Joinery Award for Best Kitchen Under $30,000.

“After years of have a white-on-white kitchen that had become a little tired, our clients requested an inviting, warm area as a hub for their home,” says Sydenham Joinery Company Director Grant Weston.

“We created a beautiful, bespoke kitchen island as a gathering point.”

Stunning lighting washes down the grain-matched island back panel. The warmth and depth of the timber melamine is highlighted as it contrasts beautifully with the 20mm Pure White Caesarstone benchtops.

details, and the stopped sharknose handles, which together emphasise the warmer aesthetic while providing a sleek functionality.

The angled kitchen back panel uses Bestwood’s Classic Walnut Timberland board. “With multiple di erent angles and mitres, it wasn’t the simplest construction. Our design intent was to elevate the look and use of what could have just been a simple stone overhang with waterfall ends,” says Grant.

The bar cabinet, shown left on the photo above, has a fresh new look that ties in with the kitchen. The lighting on the floating shelves matches the kitchen, and reflects into the Black Stopsal mirror, making it a true feature.

IMPRESSIVE winning joinery

True bespoke joinery requires talent to execute detailing and interesting twists in design.

AChristchurch new build commissioned the team at Murray Hewitt Joinery to incorporate the beauty of curves, grandeur of wood, and strength of Neolith sintered stone throughout.

The dazzling result achieved bronze in this year’s regional Master Joiner Awards, for Best Kitchen over $50k.

Kitchen fronts were clad in American White oak, polished to the client’s requirement of a stylish black stain, which integrated the fridge, dishwasher, and wine cooler.

The bench top and oven ran through to the window, and the induction hob was set flush, rebated into the Monolith bench top. “We cut all the drawers back to a 45-degree angle for a negative detail. Handle-less and soft-closing, the results were seamless,” says Murray.

“A black basin was under-mounted into the Neolith-clad island, which was mitred to appear as one big block, with a solid-timber cantilevered bench top, to look like it’s floating.”

A scullery backs onto an impressive, curved wall in black American Oak vertical slats, which flows on through to the o ce, while all internal doors are seamless in full ceiling height. The laundry, lounge unit, walk-in robe, powder room, and Neolith bathroom vanities also recieved the same tailored treatment.
