FLIP GRATER a slice of Paris

Musician, songwriter, foodie, and entrepreneur somewhat describe Flip Grater. Metropol writer Neville Idour discovers she is so much more.

With multiple international tours and five albums under her belt, musician, singer, and songwriter

Flip Grater has a dedicated following. Add on vegan foodie, Grater Goods Café/restaurant owner, food manufacturer and wholesaler, astute business woman, author, and columnist, and even her hats are wearing hats.

Personally Flip hasn’t played in a while, although she is opening for Tim Finn in September on his New Zealand tour.

These days, she’s mostly busy juggling work and family. “I have one daughter, but if I had any more it would be harder,” she admits. “Starting a business with a toddler at home was a challenge. While I have often felt stretched, I am really proud of what I have built, and I am very passionate about what we are trying to achieve in the big scheme of things.

“We want to change the way people eat and give them wonderful gourmet options, so for me it is worth all the hard work.”

Flip definitely knows all about hard work, and facing challenges head-on. One of five children, proudly home birthed in Christchurch, she kick-started her music career by learning to play guitar when she was 10, “mostly so I could sing”.

“My father was in the church band, so we played around the house and sang a bit. I was frustrated with the range of my voice and that I couldn’t sing along with so many songs. I thought that made me a bad singer. I really played the guitar so I could write songs suitable for my voice.”

Growing up she became well known on the New Zealand music scene in her 20s, for her music, and for collecting recipes for her first recipe book ‘The Cookbook Tour NZ’.

Travel to Europe followed, touring several countries, playing shows and collecting recipes from audiences for her second recipe book, ‘The Cookbook Tour Europe’. “After that, I knew Europe was where I wanted to be, to use music as a way to travel and live in a world where I was less comfortable than I was here in New Zealand.”

Flip’s non-stop international and domestic music touring lasted about 15 years, by which time she decided living in Paris was an easier way to get to all the destinations she wanted to play regularly.

“I had brought on French and German labels and wanted to be recording over there, so Paris it was for three years.

“I was fortunate when I was touring. I met and worked with some incredible musicians of di erent genres. At the same time, I cared about meeting good people and having great connections and experiences with other people, rather than networking and going into a room and seeing who is of use to you.

“I think when you are coming from a heartfelt place, hopefully that leads to opportunities that are genuine.”

Her big encounter was with husband-to-be Youssef Iskrane, at 2am on a cold September night in Paris in 2012. “I was recording

my album Pigalle. He was working in a famous jazz bar, one of the few that o ered dinner and show tickets. As Montmartre closed, my bass player let out his famous hearty chuckle, lifted a finger in the air and said ‘I know a place - the party will continue’.

“We traipsed up and over the hill in Montmartre with our double bass and inappropriate footwear and arrived to Youssef’s smiling face leaning over a balcony. He threw down a key, invited us up, immediately poured a round of whiskies and we settled in. There nestled into a deep armchair surrounded by stacks of old books and Moroccan trinkets we discussed the meaning of life and made plans to save the world.”

Youssef and Flip were married in 2015 on her father’s farm in Amberley. They’d planned to return to Paris directly afterwards, but “quickly got pregnant with our daughter Anais, and wanted to have her in New Zealand, so ended up staying.”

Her new domestic life and breeder-based fears for the future had her wanting to do more for the planet than writing sad songs. “I wanted to promote plant-based eating fulltime,” she explains, “so we rented a small kitchen where we now are in Sydenham and cooked there three days a week.”

“There I was, by myself, making sausages and handing sandwiches out the window. The demand grew so rapidly that within a year we had taken over the whole building, with retail and hospitality space, and now have a factory in Woolston just behind the Tannery, all with a team of 17 sta . For us it is like a little slice of Paris in industrial Sydenham.”

After Covid-19 lockdown, Flip started live shows at Grater Goods, at a time when it was di cult for local musicians to find a space to perform.

“Cary Caldwell from Music 212 organised them. We kept them to a 30 person limit so we could keep people spaced and safe at any of the Covid-19 levels. It was a special time with many incredible shows.”

Interestingly the Grater Goods name is a reference to Flip’s grandfather, whose family business was Grater and Sons, a butchery in Sunderland, England dating back to the early 20th century. Flip’s team manufactures vegan meats, cheeses, pates, and premium artisan products that are 100% plant-based, and sold throughout New Zealand.

Expansion is on the cards, with the company raising $400,000 through Crowd Funding to help drive exports into the Australian market, via Victoria, with the focus on Melbourne.

And writing? Flip has compiled another beautiful recipe book, ‘The Grater Good’, crammed with healthy vegan options. “It has sold really well, and shows that there is an appetite for delicious vegan food.

“The main goal is not necessarily that the recipes are healthy, although they are. It is that they are comforting and delicious, because I want people to have the pleasure of plant-based food rather than feel they are having a healthy salad on the side.”

Christchurch-born and bred, Sky Sports presenter Laura McGoldrick’s bubbly personality beams at us from thousands of television screens. Metropol writer Neville Idour chats with her about sport, growing up, and life.

Laura McGoldrick views herself as a good Canterbury girl and also as a good sport.

She’s always been involved in sport, whether playing it herself, following it, or supporting her family.

“My brothers played sport, and my dad used to run Jade Stadium, while my mother is a sports player agent. So we have always been around sports growing up,” she says.

“Cricket was particularly popular in our household, I have always loved it.”

Laura “sort of fell into the TV side of it”. Hosting a children’s TV show, she interviewed Shane Bond. “Someone from Sky Sport saw it and rang Shane Bond and asked ‘who is that girl’. He said it’s my manager’s daughter. Do you want her phone number?

“So it started from there. I never saw myself doing this, but loving sport it has been easy to talk about it. I’m pretty lucky, there’s no doubt about it. Now I cover League, Super Rugby, and have been doing golf for a long time, which I love. I still love my cricket and enjoyed working on the Women’s World Cup when it was in South Africa. That was an awesome experience.”

So how did Laura actually get into TV? “When I came out of school I went to Drama School because I wanted to be an actress. A friend of mine was auditioning for a kids sports show called Push Play. The job was hosting it, and it was a good way to learn about being in front of the camera, so I auditioned and got the job.”

She was a 20 year old at the time. “I started on that and everything sort of flowed on from there,” she recalls.

Involvement with radio also followed, and Laura has her own afternoon entertainment music show Monday to Friday from 3pm till 7pm called Hits Drive. “I’m still that drama girl at heart, singing and dancing, my poor husband!” she laughs.

Tennis was her sport, although, she confesses, not to a very high level. “I really

liked it. I tried cricket but wasn’t very good.” Now she plays golf, and loves it. “My daughter is five and we have just started playing together. She comes with me to the driving range and has her own clubs. We take our golf seriously and are the epitome of all the gear. I am a member at Remuera.”

So the Canterbury girl lives in Auckland now? “Yes, terrible isn’t it?” she laughs. “Auckland has become home now, but Christchurch will always have a special place in my heart.”

Getting back to golf, Laura says she’s working on her handicap. “I’ll be playing in the NZ Open in a couple of years once I figure out this game,” she laughs again.

“I try to play at least once a month. It is not a lot because I just don’t have the time.

“A lot of my women friends have started getting into it as well, so we try to nip o for about nine holes in the morning before my radio show.

“It’s good for your mental health being outside as well, unless there is a bad hole. (laughs….again). I try and play a full round at least once a month, plus a couple of nine holes when I can, and I love the driving range because I can do it with my daughter.

“I have a setup where you can order some chippies and have a pizza while you are hitting some balls. We love doing that. I also have a son who is two and likes hitting things, bats, clubs, whatever he can find, so it’s good fun.”

Golf aside, Laura recently enjoyed hosting a TV show called ‘The Women’s Game’, featuring New Zealand sportswomen, including cricketing great Susie Bates, Ruby Tui, Ruahei Demant, Kendra Cocksedge, and Kristina Sue. “It was pretty cool being able to highlight some of our female athletes.” Looking further ahead? “My ultimate goal is when I retire to travel the world playing beautiful golf courses. That’s my game plan and why I am working so hard now,” Laura concludes, her laughter ringing out again.

Escape to

New Zealand pop rock band Zed and Christchurch’s iconic brunch spot Addington Coffee Co-op have one thing in common, and that’s drummer Adrian Palmer. Metropol’s deputy editor Daniella Judge chats to him about his past, present, and future.

Kiwi band Zed became a pop rock sensation when it burst on to the music scene with its debut album, Silencer. The album skyrocketed to No.1 on the New Zealand Albums chart in 2000, taking the band’s members along with it.

Canterbury-born drummer, Adrian Palmer found himself thrust into a whirlwind of excitement, travel, and a taste of fame, all of which he wasn’t totally prepared for.

In 2005, Zed broke up and its members went on to pursue new endeavours. Adrian found his purpose, after an eye-opening visit to Kolkata, India, where he witnessed the devastating impact of modern slavery, and extreme poverty, on local communities. Fuelled by a desire to make a tangible di erence, Adrian, with other like-minded people, established Addington Co ee Co-op in 2008, with profits going to Kolkata and Christchurch communities in need. Their mission has been clear: to e ect positive change in both Aotearoa and overseas, with a commitment to redistributing profits and transforming lives.

As you step into the Co-op, echoes of its past as a mechanic’s workshop still linger, with the large ceiling, wooden beams, and walls of windows only adding to its appeal. The pocket-sized Addington store, encapsulated within the space, is home to a vibrant tapestry of eclectic items and stocks a treasure trove of change-making books waiting to be explored. And oh, let’s not forget the illuminated cabinet brimming with delectable treats. It’s an inviting haven, drawing many Cantabrians to settle in and enjoy.

On the success of the Addington Co ee Co-op as a well-loved co ee spot, Adrian humbly expresses gratitude. “I’m just grateful that this is a place where people like to spend their time.”

Essential to the operation of the Addington Co ee Co-op is its partnership with Joyya, an organisation providing essential assistance in Kolkata. Joyya’s dedicated team engages with the local Kolkata communities to gain an authentic understanding of their needs. The funnel that feeds Joyya is a portion of the Addington Co ee Co-op profits, the apparel goods sold in-store, online and directly to companies, and the Common Good Co ee sold to businesses across New Zealand.

As an advocate for the greater good, Adrian encourages other businesses to embrace the “common good” ethos. Business owners need to challenge themselves to step beyond their comfort zones. That first step, he suggests, could be as simple as stocking Common Good co ee grounds in sta rooms. By immersing themselves in the stories of diverse groups, businesses can discover a cause to rally behind. Adrian firmly believes that instilling a greater sense of purpose within any team will undoubtedly yield positive results.

In 2019 Zed re-united, and Adrian tells how the members are enjoying jamming together again. They even have their original producer, Nic Manders, back on the scene and the team are set to release music in the next year with a genre shift from their 2000s music.

As the band reunites and prepares for new music, Addington Co ee Co-op continues to inspire positive change.

TE RĀ: THE MĀORI SAIL

Te Rā is a sail woven in harakeke (flax) e imated to be 200 years old. It briefly returns to Aotearoa in 2023 on loan from the British Museum.

Te Rā is significant as the only existing Māori sail from post-early contact, and is currently on exhibition at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetū.

How did Te Rā find its way home? Its arrival was anticipated in 1922 by Sir Peter Buck, c.1877 – 1951, (Ngāti Mutunga) encouraging others in Aotearoa to study Te Rā. His wishes were finally realised in 2023 with weavers, scientists, and academics, now conscious of its history and significance.

Dr Catherine Smith while undertaking her PhD on Māori textiles in 2022, and master weaver, Ranui Ngarumu, ONZM, visited the British Museum and saw Te Rā. Working with Dr Donna Campbell, Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies at the University of Waikato, (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Ruanui), they received a Royal Society Te Apārangi Marsden grant fund for further study and the exhibition of Te Rā in Aotearoa.

Te Rā has its origins in a technological revolution in Polynesia from the 13th century. Changes in climate saw harakeke gain prominence as the primary weaving material for clothing, rope, fishing nets, and also recognised for its medicinal properties.

Te Rā is a taonga that has an association with numerous aspects of human behaviour and relationships.

The agreement for Te Rā’s loan encompasses its return to the British Museum when its exhibition in Te Puna o Waiwhetū and Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum is over. This commitment is confirmed at a time when colonial history increasingly addresses the return of significant indigenous objects to their place of origin. In 2021, for example, Cambridge College returned a ‘royal ancestral heirloom,’ a Benin bronze taken in 1897 from the Kingdom of Benin, Nigeria. It is not unrealistic to also consider that Te Rā’s brief visit home may also see its final return home.

WHIRIA TE TĀNGATA: WEAVING THE PEOPLE TOGETHER OVER 150 YEARS

Whiria Te Tāngata documents and celebrates the 150th anniversary of Te Wānanga o Waitaha University of Canterbury, its gue curator PhD Art Hi orian Bojana Rimbovska highlighting heritage obje s ‘chosen to make visitors think about what it means for a university to be part of the community for 150 years’.

The exhibition features heritage objects, photographs and documents from 1873 to the present. Among its highlights is a painting by Rita Angus (1908 – 1970), Untitled [Mountain Biological Station, Cass], 1936. Her attention during this period centred upon Canterbury’s ‘hard, clear light’, an idea shared by other promising artists. Angus became a student at Canterbury College (now the University of Canterbury) in 1927, valuing the importance the art school then placed on skills in drawing. During her time at Canterbury College, Angus was also influenced by lecturer in Art History, James Shelley, whose authority as a Cambridge University scholar was widely felt by other local artists, equally aware of European modernism, including Rhona Haszard, Russell Clark, Rata Lovell-Smith, and Evelyn Page. Shelley possessed a knowledge of modernism beyond his Christchurch contemporaries, praising the work of New Zealand painters who flirted with modernism, keen to liberate students and the general public, providing support for painting, drama, music, dance, and romantic discussions, on the artist’s role in society.

OLIVIA CHAMBERLAIN, GUIDELINES

Guidelines is the 5th in a series from Olivia Chamberlain of floating, minimal geometric forms in acrylic on cotton paintings, a progressive exploration of her imagery, informed by a certainty and attitude in the realisation of an impressive series of new paintings. Chamberlain comments: “I am using, re-using, flipping, and altering, many paper cutouts from previous works, and I am looking to lines, shapes, and colours, that I notice around me. The lines are straighter, corners are squarer, colours are more saturated.” Undoubtedly the exhibition’s title, Guidelines, seems ironically deceptive, Chamberlain’s further reconsideration and intuitive exploration of relationships between colour, form and space are fundamental to the exhibition’s success. MIRANDA PARKES, BALLER

News of a new exhibition of paintings by Miranda Parkes is always accompanied by expectations of large, billowing canvases, hosting boisterous and resolute colour harmonies, and Baller, like previous exhibitions exceeds such expectations. Yes, Parkes more than delivers on such expectations, the reality and experience in the gallery is always so much more. Parkes’ canvases and large-scale paintings are treasures, complemented by wall-sculptures animated by rowdy colour harmonies and flowers in a state of seemingly continual blossom. Parkes’ manipulation of her materials of choice reveals evocative evidence of the artist as shaman, an intermediary, and an act of metamorphosis, as magnificent as it is sublime. Tia Barrett’s He Pounamu Ko Āu was an unanticipated revelation.

Describing He Pounamu Ko Āu, in the accompanying gallery handout, Barrett underlines her art practice as “firmly grounded in celebrating my wahine Māori identity and deepening my connection to my whenua me o ngā tūpuna through a lens-based practice. The positive transformation of feeling uplifted through this research, [for He Pounamu Ko Āu], is the peace felt when pounamu arrives in the riverbeds in Te Waipounamu. My mōteatea describes this peace as a calming sensation.’ Certainly, as both film and installation, at the heart of the experience of He Pounamu Ko Āu is the authority of its sensory and physical presence. GALLERY GLIMPSE COMPONENT: LIVING IN A LOOP

Auckland-based artist Component is widely regarded as a pioneer of stencil art in New Zealand, and internationally recognised for his style and attitude.

For more than two decades he has explored and redefined the boundaries of his art and his subjects, his street art and public murals in parallel with his work in galleries and museums, locally and internationally in numerous group exhibitions and collaborations with other artists and designers.

Shaping the street art scene in New Zealand and a founding member of the influential Auckland-based Art Collective, Component’s subjects range from “pop culture icons and political figures to abstraction.”

His exhibition, Living in a Loop, at Fiksate Gallery, sees the artist encouraging us to “liberate ourselves from the confines of repetitive patterns that shape our reality, embracing the potential for personal growth and transformation”. Central to such ambitions is a serious commitment to his art as a critical means for social and political commentary and change. In a recent interview he commented: “I often find myself gravitating towards social issues, personal narratives, and cultural representations. These themes allow me to engage with viewers on a deeper level, spark conversations, and highlight the interconnectedness of our human experiences.”

He described Living in a Loop as showcasing “a blend of my signature stencil style alongside experimentation with new techniques and visual elements.”

Fiksate Gallery notes: “Component’s art acts as a mirror, inviting contemplation on the choices we make, the habits we form, and the consequences they bear. Living in a Loop sparks a dialogue on the role of art in challenging societal conventions and fostering individuality. With every brushstroke and every precise stencil cut, Component invites viewers to explore their own unique narratives within the intricate tapestry of life.”

Endometriosis affects an estimated 120,000 New Zealanders. Many wait an average of eight years between symptoms developing, and diagnosis.

Endometriosis New Zealand (ENZ) wants government to develop a national endometriosis action plan, similar to that in Australia, and to including funding and research.

“We heard that women with endometriosis are a ected by lack of available information around menstrual health, as well as being unfairly

a ected by a lack of management, and treatment guidance for health practitioners, and limited availability of specialist treatments,” the report says.

ENZ Chief Executive Tanya Cooke says words alone will not improve the lives of women burdened by endometriosis.

“It must be backed up with a specific action plan, and underpinned by funding and resources,” she says.

An internal stye forms when one of the oil glands in your eyelids becomes clogged or obstructed. An external stye occurs when there’s an infection inside the hair follicle of an eyelash. Here are a few tips to reduce the discomfort of a stye.

Apply a clean, warm compress to the a ected eye for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day. The warmth helps to increase blood circulation, and promote the natural drainage of the stye.

Keep the area clean. Maintain good hygiene by washing your hands frequently and avoiding touching or rubbing your eyes.

Avoid makeup and contact lenses until the stye has healed. These can further irritate the eye and prolong the recovery process.

Don’t squeeze or pop the stye. It may be tempting but avoid touching the stye as it can lead to further infection, or spread the bacteria.

When the mother of a special needs daughter approached her, the decision was easy, and Rita began providing cooking classes to facilitate pathways for disabled communities into the hospitality industry.

“It’s not just a job for me. It’s a life mission,” she declares. Rita’s My Home Chef classes cover health and safety, knife skills, proper cooking posture, and an array of delicious meal recipes thanks to lifetime experience of cooking Mediterranean, Asian, Middle Eastern, and European cuisines.

She says one of her special needs students is 22 and a wizard in the kitchen, easily cooking three meals in 45 minutes. “I can’t even cook as quickly as he can,” Rita says. Open to new students of any age and skill level, Rita notes that “everybody is welcome to come and learn, improve their skills, and gain new ideas.”

Rita hopes to open the first kitchen in Aotearoa with a disabled workforce, to beat the stigma in society and provide equal opportunities. Catering for events is supplied by café Paris for the Weekend, and the range of gorgeous spots in the garden makes it di cult to choose a favourite. “We have stream side ferns gardens, rustic spaces, or you can go more formal with our pagoda in the rose garden,” says Andrea. The colours are wonderful and constantly change with the season.

INGREDIENTS

4 cloves garlic

225g Swiss Brown mushrooms

2 Tbsp butter

1/8 Tsp salt

1/8 Tsp pepper

225g fettuccine

2.5 cups vegetable broth

1/3 cup heavy cream

1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Mince the garlic and slice the mushrooms. 1

Add the butter and garlic to a deep skillet and sauté over medium heat for one minute. Add the sliced mushrooms, and pepper, and continue to sauté until the mushrooms have softened and the edges are beginning to brown.

Add the fettuccine to the skillet along with the vegetable broth and stir to combine.

Place a lid on the skillet, turn the heat up to medium-high, and allow the broth to come up to a boil. When it reaches a boil, give the pasta a quick stir, replace the lid, then turn the heat down to medium-low.

Continue to let the pasta simmer in the broth for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally or until the pasta is tender. There should be a little saucy liquid left in the bottom of the skillet.

Add the heavy cream, and salt, to the skillet and stir to combine. Turn the heat o then add the Parmesan and continue to stir the pasta until the Parmesan is melted. Give the pasta a taste and add salt or pepper if needed.

These include improving digestion, lowering the risk of depression, preventing bone loss, supporting heart health, protecting against cancer, and more. Also known as an alligator pear or butter fruit, avocados are actually a type of berry.

A popular avocado dish is guacamole, first developed in Mexico, and now used internationally as a dip, spread, in tacos, and as a condiment. Try this Jamie Oliver recipe, with your add-ins:

GUACAMOLE INGREDIENTS

1/2 a small red onion

1-2 fresh red chillies

3 ripe avocados

Plentiful at this time of year, avocados are delicious, and nutritious, on their own, or in any number of culinary dishes, from simple to sublime. METHOD

Peel the onion, deseed 1 chilli, then roughly chop it all on a large board.

Extra virgin olive oil

Roughly chop the coriander, add the tomatoes, then chop it all together.

Add juice from 1 lime and 1 tablespoon of oil. Season to taste with salt, pepper and more lime juice, if needed.

AVOCADO-COFFEE SHAKE

INGREDIENTS

1 cup (240ml) whole milk, plus more as needed

1/2 cup (120ml) sweetened condensed milk

2 medium Hass avocados (about 225g each), halved, pitted, and flesh scooped

285g ice (about 10 cubes)

1/4 cup (60ml) strongly brewed co ee

Pinch kosher or sea salt

Chocolate syrup, for drizzling (optional)

METHOD SERVES 2-4 PREP 5 MINS

In a blender, combine whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, avocado, ice, co ee, and salt. Blend on high speed until smooth, 30 seconds to 1 minute; if the shake is thicker than you’d like, blend in more milk to thin slightly.

If desired, drizzle chocolate syrup on inside of serving glasses, then divide shake evenly between glasses, and serve. 2

Tip: Add more milk for a thinner shake, more or less condensed milk to adjust sweetness, and more or less ice for either a colder and frostier treat or a thicker and more intense one. Add an extra foamy co ee shot for decoration on top.

Margarita!

A classic margarita is a delightful tangy blend of tequila, fresh lime juice, Triple Sec, and sweet and sour mix. Frozen is even better so check out this recipe, which pairs well with tacos, guacamole and corn chips, or a big bowl of Pico de Gallo (Mexican salsa). The recipe makes 4 to 6 margaritas.

MARGARITA INGREDIENTS METHOD

1

1 cup tequila

1/2 cup of triple sec

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (about 2 limes)

2Tbsp simple syrup, superfine sugar or agave syrup

4-6 cups ice

Lime wedges

Coarse salt

Place the tequila, triple sec, lime juice, sweetener and ice into a blender. Blend until the ice is crushed and the mixture is lumpfree. Add sugar a bit at a time to taste.

Using a lime wedge, moisten each glass rim. Set limes aside for garnish. Spread a few tablespoons of coarse salt on a plate, hold each glass upside down and dip the rim into the salt. Flip the glasses right-side-up and discard any remaining salt.

Divide the frozen margaritas evenly into the salted glasses and garnish with the reserved limes. Serve immediately.

TOP TIPS

The key to a smooth frozen margarita is a powerful blender. Try using pre-crushed ice instead of whole cubes.

For a flavoured frozen margarita, replace a few ice cubes with frozen mango, strawberries, pineapple, or mixed berries.

The longer you blend the ice, the finer the slushy consistency will be.

To help keep your frozen margaritas slushy, combine the tequila, triple sec and lime juice, then chill in the fridge before mixing.

This is the express aim of Treat NZ, an online service created to support and promote local eateries countrywide, and to help foodies find deals, events, and specials, to make dining out more interesting and easier on the pocket.

The service sprang up in 2020 from the creative brain of Taupo local, Fleur Wolstenholme, herself involved with hospitality, and with digital marketing.

“I wanted to set up a platform for small, locally owned and operated businesses to market themselves to a wider audience,” says Fleur.

Eateries are listed free on Treat NZ. All they need to do to join is o er a deal to potential diners, who subscribe to the service.

“By the end of the year we hope to have 100 restaurants onboard,” says Fleur, aiming to have 1000 members by December.

“In Canterbury, we have listed a wide range of cuisine styles, from fine dining to ethnic, co ee shops to hotel restaurants. Some people use saunas as part of a healthy lifestyle, although be warned – certain medical and health conditions are not compatible with saunas or steam rooms. If you are considering a home sauna, one of the easiest options is a portable, pre-built infrared style.

Usually these can be installed almost anywhere inside or outside, so long as they are under shelter. A spare room, in a corner of a garage, or a covered porch, are all possibilities. Move it in, plug it in, and go.

Traditional steam saunas are more limiting as they often need to be professionally installed due to their plumbing, drainage, ventilation, and electrical requirements.

Portable home saunas come in a variety of sizes, from one to two person units to large saunas with room for six or more, so check the measurements of both the sauna and the proposed site for it.

Wood is the most common material used to construct saunas, although some options come with glass doors.

Ceramic and carbon are the two most common materials used in infrared heaters. Carbon heaters are more expensive, yet they are also thin, light, provide an even and safe surface temperature and can last up to 50 years.

Infrared heat from carbon fibre heaters also penetrates deeper into the skin tissue, which allows the body to absorb more energy, meaning you experience a more intense sweat.

Infrared saunas also come with a huge range of extras, including audio systems and Bluetooth capability, light therapy, digital smart touch controls, LED lighting, automatic timers, and pre-set programmes, and ergonomically-designed benches and integrated seating.

Sauna prices vary depending on size, materials used, and extras.

Prices start at around $2000 for an entry level unit, climbing to $10,000+ for custom-built models.

Traditional steam saunas are usually more expensive than infrared therapy saunas, mostly due to the burner and installation costs.

Running costs are relatively low both for infrared and steam saunas.

On average, if you use your infrared sauna three times a week you could expect to spend around $10 a month on electricity. Traditional steam saunas cost between $20 and $30 a month to run.

Home saunas are more readily available these days, and many, such as the infrared therapy options, are easily installed, and take up little space.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars recently marked the 110th anniversary of its successes in the Alpine Trial in 1913.

The original trial event spanned eight days and 2600 kilometres, and the marque’s dominance of event cast the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost’s reputation as ‘the best car in the world’.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive O cer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, says the company still upholds the design and engineering excellence that made those early Rolls-Royces so successful.

“The Ghost’s marriage of performance, strength, reliability, technological

innovation, driver engagement, and comfort, provides a template for everything we do more than a century later,” he says.

A faultless performance by the new 40/50hp, or Silver Ghost as it came to be known, in the 1907 Scottish Reliability Trials, followed by a peerless demonstration at the famous 1911 London to Edinburgh Top Gear Trial and Brooklands 100mph Run, earned it accolade of ‘the best British car’.

For energetic, ambitious managing director Claude Johnson, who described himself as the hyphen in Rolls-Royce, this

was merely the beginning. He wanted to conquer the European market and knew that success in a high-profile continental event was the key. The 1913 Alpine Trial provided the opportunity he was looking for, and the rest is history.

As the most powerful vehicles taking part, the Silver Ghosts were sent o first, leading the field from start to the finish on many of the daily stages.

Of the 46 starters, only 31 reached Vienna, with the Silver Ghosts the event’s unrivalled stars.

SHORTLIST THIS ONE

It’s been a while since the name “Astra” featured as an option in the New Zealand new car market. Now it’s back, courtesy of Opel, Ben Selby reports, after his latest test drive.

The new Astra is made up of two models, the petrol SRi and GSe plug-in-hybrid. While the latter will be arriving later in the year, the SRi is available now with a start price of $49,990. Power comes from a 1.2L turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 96kW and 230Nm of torque which is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Opel claim combined fuel consumption figures for the SRi of 5.1L/100km, which is pretty good for something without the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain.

Opel New Zealand says the new Astra “speaks for itself” and on the subject of funky modern styling, it certainly does that. I love the mix of black accents, clean cut lines and the addition of 18-inch diamond-cut alloys and that now familiar Opel visor front fascia. It’s a great looking hatch, especially this shade of Amber Yellow with a black roof.

Inside, the Astra has been filled to the brim with contemporary touches, reflecting the “Modern German” stance Opel has been showcasing since arriving in New Zealand. The cabin feels refined, and there is plenty of comfort too. Dominating the dashboard is a 10-inch configurable digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment

system. Both screens also sort of blend into one, which keeps things seamless and uncluttered.

There is plenty of onboard kit too, especially for this price point. The Astra SRi gets a heated steering wheel, heated black alcantara and leatherette seats, LED pixel headlights with high beam assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, active safety brake, blind spot monitoring, rear cross tra c alert, parking sensors all around, lane positioning assist, and a very clear 360-degree reversing camera.

I have always loved the sound of a triple cylinder engine, and the burble provided by the 1.2L turbo three pot provides that same sweet soundtrack. It’s a raspy and mechanical engine note, and whether low down or higher up in the rev range, it’s a rather nice reminder you are at the helm of a machine rather than a mere appliance.

That turbo unit also provides some relatively perky power delivery. Keep it in the low to mid-range and while you won’t be rearranging your fillings with immense acceleration, its keenness to get going is noticeable. It also feels remarkably balanced and rather playful when selecting sport mode. It’s no hot hatch but it still manages to entertain and whether

one is trapsing through the urban jungle or the open road, the Astra is an ideal tool.

Despite the five-door premium hatch segment playing second fiddle to SUVs, the new Opel Astra SRi serves up plenty of zing and colour, making it worthy of your shortlist. There is plenty here to like.

The new Nissan Z has been a long time coming. The lineage which stretches back through decades of fast giant-killing Z sports cars beginning with the original 240Z, continues. Ben Selby reports.

Around 10 years after the 370Z, the new Z brings this vehicular icon into a modern world. Under the bonnet sits a 3L twin-turbo V6 engine, mated to either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission. My test car came with the latter.

Whichever you choose, you will have 298kW and 475Nm of torque on tap.

Its styling has plenty of 240Z, with subtle references of 300ZX too, such as the taillights. While not dramatic, its textbook coupe lines and 19-inch RAYS forged alloys all add up to make the Z one handsome sports car.

The term ‘fits like a glove’ is an horrendous cliché, yet that is the best way to describe the cabin. It wraps itself around you like a hammock. I also love the further nods to heritage, such as a trio of driver focused gauges for the turbo speed, boost pressure, and battery voltage, which hark back to the 240Z, plus the electric seat controls, a la Z32 300ZX.

There is a good amount of kit too, with features including heated leather seats, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a 12.3-inch digital TFT instrument cluster with 8” touchscreen infotainment system coming as standard.

The Z is happy to let bystanders know of its

presence on startup. It doesn’t shout, but emits a melodic howl, like a cross between the Wolfman and the tones of Robert Plant. It’s a great bellow. Get moving and you find the Z manages to be supple and easy to drive. The steering is light and, while you do feel bumps on occasion, by sports car standards it’s not bad.

Make no bones about it though, the new Z is a pure driver’s car, one of which you must be awake for. Unshackle the Z on your favourite stretch of bendy bitumen and, whether in Normal or Sport, the Z constantly tempts you to push harder. Do so and you realise the back end loves to come out to play, even with the traction control on.

This liveliness in the corners keeps you on your toes, especially in wet conditions, but the Z itself is still terrific fun. I would love to have experienced the manual, but the 9-speed automatic is a delight to use and serves up some slick and responsive shifts.

The V6 twin turbo unit is a gem too. With plenty of low-down torque and more than enough power to have fun, a flex of your big toe on the throttle means that little e ort is required to cover a tonne of ground. Despite drive going to the rear, the Z does feel like a mini GTR, and that’s saying something.

The Z is well and truly back, and boy is it a ‘good-un’.

The Grecale is initially made up of a three-tier model lineup, with a fourth, the all-electric Folgore due here mid-2024. Currently we have the GT, Modena, and Trofeo. Price wise, the GT sits at $124,000, the mid-range Modena at $145,000 and the flagship Trofeo at $186,000.

Both GT and Modena are powered by a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to an 48v mild-hybrid system. Power for the GT is rated at 221kW/450Nm while the Modena has an extra 22kW. Zero to 100km/h sits at 5.6 seconds and 5.2 seconds, respectively.

The Trofeo is the hottest Grecale you can buy. Hidden behind that very pretty nose is the same Nettuno 3L twin-turbo V6 engine from the MC20 supercar. This means the same F1 style pre-chamber combustion system and having 390kW/630Nm and 0 to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

All Grecale models come with Maserati’s second generation eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD system.

Drivers can choose from a variety of drive modes too including Comfort, GT Sport and in the case of Trofeo and those with air suspension, Corsa and O -Road mode.

These modes are controlled by Maserati’s new Vehicle Domain Control Module. VDCM allows the Grecale to predict rather than react to road conditions and adapt the car in each drive mode to suit the situation. Hop inside and the level of refinement here is stunning. The Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system is also miles better than the old FCA system.

Being a mild-hybrid, the GT is happy to store electric drive within its 48v battery pack, and use it to aid in acceleration and fuel e ciency. This when combined with

the 2L turbo four pot equates to some pretty decent get-up-and-go.

It even sounds nice high in the rev range. When in Sport mode, the steering weights up and hunkers down to be as slippery through the air as possible.

The eight-speed automatic transmission feels slick. It is up there with the MC20 in terms of crispness and responsiveness.

As a passenger, I can safely say the Trofeo’s Nettuno V6 straight out of the MC20 is a gem of an engine.

It also makes a fabulous turbo six pot burble from idle right the way to the near 7000rpm redline.

My last Maserati test drive was in the mid-range Modena, and you do feel the extra power. In comfort mode, the ride is supple, and it feels solid and planted whether in the bends or on the straights.

I found it hard not to be rather smitten with Maserati’s latest creation.
