Many women, and an increasing number of men, are turning to cosmetic medicine to “refresh” their look.
In Christchurch they turn to Dr Brigid Lee, one half of the team running the popular Skin Rejuvenation Clinic.
A cosmetic doctor, Brigid started work as a general practitioner (for more than 12 years) before deciding she wanted to specialise in cosmetic medicine. That was more than 15 years ago.
“I realised I wanted to combine my love of art and design with my medical knowledge,” she says, adding that cosmetic medicine is a true amalgamation of art and science. After completing her two-year diploma course with the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine, Brigid wanted to learn more about skin, opting for a postgraduate diploma of dermatology through Cardi University.
Years later, she still finds cosmetic medicine a fascinating area to work in, with constantly evolving new treatments and technologies, and it becoming both more widespread and acceptable.
“Recently Bette Midler, who is looking amazing for her 77 years, acknowledged that her face has had some help, telling the world she has had some ‘tailoring done to my face’. It’s so refreshing that these Hollywood celebrities are admitting to having treatments done, rather than telling us it’s all due to face yoga and dandelion tea.”
Interestingly, says Brigid, there has been a huge increase in demand for cosmetic medicine since New Zealand’s ‘team of five
million’ exited Covid-19 lockdown.
“I think it had something to do with all the zooming we were forced into doing, and seeing what we look like when we are talking and animating.
“Also it made people realise that we never know what’s around the corner, so stop thinking about it, just do it.
“We all deserve to feel happy and confident, and if a few tweaks can help with that, then why not?”
• SPF 30+ (or stronger) every day.
• Vitamin A/Retinoic acid is your secret weapon against ageing as it increases cell turnover, which keeps fine lines away, tightens pores and makes skin look brighter.
• Vitamin C/Ascorbic Acid will keep skin looking and also feeling firmer.
She says procedure trends, such as the foxy eyelift and Russian lip, come and go, but healthy, radiant skin will always be in fashion.
“As people notice the early signs of ageing, such as loss of skin radiance, volume loss, and sagging, they look for treatments to help. Luckily there many options available, from machines that help with skin discolouration, tissue tightening, and skin texture, to injectables that help
with wrinkles, volume replacement, and collagen stimulation. “Overall, most people just want to look refreshed, and maybe a few years younger.”
Men too are turning to cosmetic procedures, Brigid says. “Men age di erently to women, but a lot of the issues are the same. They get wrinkles, and lose volume as they age, so treatments for those issues are the most common. A sharp jawline and strong chin are good masculine characteristics, and is probably our most requested procedure from our male clients.”
She is quick to point out that the great thing about cosmetic medicine is that none of it is essential (some of her clients might disagree), yet it is “wonderful for enhancing features, and reversing the signs of ageing”.
“The Kardashians have encouraged younger and younger people to give it a try, but gorgeous young people only need ‘baby tox’, and cautious use of fillers to prevent the earliest signs of ageing and enhance their natural beauty,” Brigid says.
“Once lines are still there, even when you aren’t smiling or frowning, is when it’s time to give some wrinkle treatments a go, which, depending on how strong your muscles are, and your skin type, can be from late 30s onwards, but usually mid-40s.
“Once menopause starts, ageing happens rapidly, so anything you have done prior to support your skin and face will make the ageing process gentler. However, it’s never too late to soften deep lines and make your appearance look fresher.”
Healthy radiant skin will always be in fashion, and Cantabrians have Dr Brigid Lee to turn to for help achieving that. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch explains.
Costa Kerdemelidis slipped into the world as his mother was exiting a taxi. That was the start of a life filled with drama, his family’s past marked by both conflict and reunion.
Amidst the turmoil of World War II, his relatives were separated, with some imprisoned in Siberia in 1936 before the war, and the others exiled, along with all the Greeks living in Crimea, to Kazakhstan as enemies of the state.
Miraculously they were all reunited in Kazakhstan following that tumultuous period, and managed to escape to Greece. Then, just before Costa was born, Greece became locked in a violent civil war, resulting in thousands of deaths, and many Greeks abandoning their country.
In an era when most nations were solely accommodating young male migrants, Costa’s grandmother was determined to keep her family united. New Zealand was one of the few countries welcoming entire families.
The Kerdemelidis family, all 16 of them, packed up and immigrated, living together for many years, as they put down new roots.
Costa settled well into New Zealand life becoming dux of Linwood High School, then studying chemical engineering. He worked initially as a chemical engineer, and then as a lecturer at Christchurch’s University of Canterbury.
While looking for a change, he and a friend decided to start up a restaurant.
“I thought to myself, I can play music and my mother can cook,” he recalls.
Mykonos was an instant success, and Costa would often play his bouzouki through the night. Mykonos was sold and Costa and his family decided to live in Greece. New Zealand retained a place in his heart, and in 1993 Costa returned
to Christchurch, starting the restaurant Santorini. A vibrant spot pre-quake, it was renowned for its great food, music, dancing, and singing, and quickly became the “party capital” of Christchurch.
“Lots of immigrant families came to the restaurant, and I heard many interesting stories.”
Unfortunately, the 2011 Christchurch earthquake decimated Santorini’s, forcing its closure and demolition.
With one chapter ending, Costa suddenly had the time to dedicate to his true passions, music, and storytelling.
His musical, Breaking Plates, debuted earlier this year. The musical is based on Costa’s experiences and events during the Canterbury earthquakes. Initially envisioned as a television series, Costa realised that he wanted to showcase “Greek music with English lyrics to the world”.
The name Breaking Plates represents a mix of Greek tradition and a nod to the earthquake’s tectonic plates. Costa worked on the script for more than 10 years, and in the last seven with the help of director and singer Ravil Atlas, and musical directer Deen Colson.
The narrative revolves around Yorgo, a father of four, who finds himself dealing not only with the shifting tectonic plates of the earth, but also with an evolving world that he is unwilling to accept. “I am ecstatic with how it turned out.”
Now, Costa and his wife Despina run The Classic Villa, an iconic boutique hotel that is easily recognisable as the bright pink building on Worcester Street.
He also supports the Canterbury Musical Theatre Charitable Trust, to encourage young people to engage in music.
A remarkable individual who has faced numerous challenges, Costa has overcome them all, and is now celebrating the musical as “the highlight” of his life.
“Greek music with English lyrics to the world.”
It’s all things wool, arts, and theatre taking place in and around Christchurch over the coming months.

Sculptor and print maker, Sam Harrison’s commitment to the figure is evident in both his choice of materials; bronze, waxed plaster, pigment and concrete, and the imposing tangible presence of his subjects.
Harrison describes the works in Aggregate at the Jonathan Smart Gallery as “full figures standing upright, but their forms have been reduced and upended. They have this feeling of being a full figure but are only a fragment and that has become more interesting as I break them down. Less is more.
“The sculpted figures continue to be developed from my drawings, which are made from life sometimes only capturing a fragment of what’s in front of me. This is what informs the sculpture. I have been working on Torso for two years now. I have lived with it, and I have paired it back, and now it is from a space between the figure and abstraction and that is a dangerous and good place to be playing. Everything is turned on its head.”

In April Saskia Bunce-Rath opens an exhibition of new embroideries and textiles at City Art Depot, which she describes as ‘thread in a painterly way.’ She notes that as an undergraduate painter at Ilam School of Fine Arts she was struggling to find her voice as a painter/artist.
“I remember being at the Rudolf Steiner School and loving embroidery. At Ilam I took one of my paintings and recreated it in embroidery. Showing it to another post-graduate, Emma Wallbank, in the studio next to hers it was warmly received.”
Bunce-Rath says that she doesn’t have a studio at home, but “sits in bed and makes her works, looking and thinking about them. I have recently done a much larger work, three times the size of my smaller works (approximately 20cm x 15cm), and I am not sure how people will respond to it, but there is something that happens when my works are on the wall to the vividness of their colour.”
She also makes a connection to her embroidered work and post-impressionist paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.
“I was overseas in Europe, and I saw their paintings. I was in Amsterdam, and also in England for the year, exposed to this massive canon of art history.
“I like van Gogh’s compositions and his interiors, his bedrooms are wonky and strange and I have picked up on that in my works. I love Gauguin’s compositions, and the way that he places his hills, and his long skinny trees, in his painting, and the mountains in my works are inspired by those in Bill Hammond’s paintings.”
Although inhabiting mythical or futuristic worlds, Bunce-Rath’s subjects in her works are also contemporary commentaries.
“When making the first ones, I was feeling very anxious about climate change. I was creating this imagined future world, and these creatures wandering in this strange world in the future.
“For the exhibition coming up, I am going back to present time. I have taken the figures inside into their bedroom, and I have one working on a computer. It’s about conjuring feelings of nostalgia and wonderment.”

Based in Ōtautahi Chri church, Saskia Bunce-Rath’s embroideries are about their conne ion to a global hi ory of painting and ancient and future worlds in which humanity is mythological, personal, and familiar.1. The forest hours shaking through, embroidery thread on calico fabric, 2023
“Throughout the whole process, we were constantly sharing our thoughts, ideas and sharing our own individual experiences. I feel like these workshops were really important for strengthening our bonds and being there for each other. It was really cool to see how everyone had their own personal growth and it was a lovely experience to go through it together. It is such a beautiful way of healing.” –Cahaya Milne
In the a ermath of the 15 March 2019 mosque shootings in Ōtautahi Chri church, survivors and supporters joined with Colombianborn New Zealander, and photographer, Janneth Gil in a series of creative collaborations centred on healing and finding peace.
In March 2023, their exhibition Raising Sakinah: Finding Peace honours the Shuhada, ‘those taken from us’. The project is Gil’s most recent endeavor in her Darkness into Light projects, established following March 2019. Gil outlines the current project as realised ‘with guidance from Noraini, a survivor from the attacks, and artist/designer Sudi Dagipour, and social worker Rebecca Parnham. “We created workshops to provide creative tools for healing, focusing on printmaking and photography and discussions about support systems”.
“Most people don’t take into consideration the spiritual, cultural and individual needs of these circumstances and art is a way of healing. But rather than an ‘art recipe’, it is about what can I do and what do you need?
“Now in my forth year, there are many projects under the umbrella of Darkness
into Light, working with the survivors and their support with me. It has grown organically.
“We started the workshops in 2021, and making the prints in 2022. For this project we had support from the Philip Carter Trust, and it has allowed us to do the work that we needed to do with the community.
“I am impressed and grateful to our group. I can’t believe the work they have done while constantly, saying ‘I am not an artistJanneth made me an artist’. They were free to work as they wished. Carving the print, and the ink, made from the flowers donated by the community after the attacks, was the ‘aroha’ taking on a new life, to make the images.
“They were making works and helping each other. Doing the workshops, I got very ill, and they were the ones who supported me, giving me food in a mutual relationship. “There were a lot of smiles during the
workshops. Seeing their prints, everybody said that the best part was when they took the paper o the inked-printed surface, sharing stories of what the print meant for them. It was an incredible moment.
“The participants directly a ected by the attacks, some of them losing both their children and husbands, wanted to use their voices to honour the Shuhada, and ensure that their stories become part of our collective memories so things like this don’t happen again.”

Auckland-based architecture, design and craft gallery, Objectspace has opened a new and additional space in Ōtautahi, at the Sir Miles Warren Gallery, 65 Cambridge Terrace. Launching its programme with Oceanic Architectural Routes: The photographic archive of Mike Austin, Objectspace is a welcome addition to the city. Warren Feeney interviewed Objectspace Director, Kim Paton, about what to expect and look forward to.
Kim Paton: “We have been generously gifted the gallery site through the incredible support of the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, and The Warren Trust, and all parties are keen to see how it goes throughout 2023, and we’ll evaluate if
we continue beyond this year.
“Objectspace is a national organisation, and the way in which we are funded by Creative New Zealand is to be a leadership organisation for the discipline fields of craft, design, and architecture.
Previously we’ve undertaken significant touring exhibitions, and this opportunity extends that work to the next level, giving us the continuity of our own space, and a chance to deliver programmes to audiences in two locations.
“Our programme is planned and underway. Some exhibitions are designed for both venues, and there is plenty of programming that responds to Christchurch’s architectural context, as well as the local contemporary practitioner/maker community.
“We have an exhibition in development, curated by John Walsh on the subject of Sir Miles Warren watercolours. We also have an exhibition coming up about the loss of a recent beloved Athfield Architects building, and an exhibition-collaboration with The National, which explores domestic spaces – a mediation on how we adorn our houses and cherish objects.
“The exhibition presents never before seen watercolours that were done during Sir Miles’ extensive travels to Europe with John and Fay Coley. They demonstrate his extraordinary skill, and interestingly, their subject is a striking contrast to the buildings he designed.
“The exhibition foregrounds the value of drawing and sketching for architecture, and importantly presents these watercolours inside an iconic Sir Miles building, where the range between the buildings he studied, and those he designed, can be experienced.”
Opening exhibition: Oceanic Architectural Routes: The photographic archive of Mike Austin
Details: Curated by Albert L. Refiti, Oceanic Architectural Routes: The photographic archive of Mike Austin. Open and free to visit, 9 March to 30 April 2023. Objectspace, 65 Cambridge Terrace, Central Christchurch. Access through the left on the street front and through the garden.

Gabby O’Connor is an artist-researcher who has successfully used art to communicate the relationship between our marine environments and the risks of environmental and climate changes.
From 2017 to 2021, O’Connor researched the risks around climate change for her PhD at the University of Auckland, the outcome involving her skills as an installation artist, commanding and controlling large gallery spaces.
Describes as an ‘artist-researcher’ her commitment has been to utilise her arts practice to make tangible the relationships between our marine environments and the possibilities and probabilities of environmental and climate change, through large-scale public art projects that have been installed in public gallery spaces throughout Aotearoa.
Her current work has been with scientists and local communities, making the connections between art, science and climate change for a further significant contemporary work that has now opened at the Ashburton Art Gallery. O’Connor’s All the Colours, All the Light is an installation drawing from her experience in the Antarctic, where ‘moisture particles in the air can freeze and act as tiny prisms,
reflecting a rainbow of light that creates twinkling clouds known as diamond dust’.
Indeed, the scale and ambitions of All the Colours, All the Light was anticipated by Connor’s 2021 project, The Unseen, created from 12 kilometres of rope and cable ties and evolving through nationwide community programmes that included 60 workshops and 1600 participants. Described as a giant community artwork made from rope, she commented: ‘At its heart, The Unseen is an art-sci collaboration that provides opportunities for people to participate directly in making art and accessing scientists and scientific research. It is not one or another, but all things at once.’
In the spaces of the Ashburton Art Gallery, O’Connor has installed theatre lighting gels, transforming the gallery into an immersive kaleidoscope. Bathing in colour, All the Colours, All the Light relies on an audience’s visual perception of light waves to exist.

Backdirt is an experience like no other, an unanticipated encounter that amuses and persuades. Daniel John Corbett Sanders and Priscilla Rose Howe raise questions about public expressions of queerness and what continues to be considered transgressive. The detail of Howe’s Pool Party, a large wall painting of figures sharing a sauna with dead oysters and prawns, resonates with an ‘otherness’ that is very funny, yet equally about conversations, relationships and connections. As such, Sanders and Howe deliver on Backdirt’s a rmative message, ‘the work inhabits a queer world that is abundant, untamable, and infinitely various.’ Daniel John Corbett Sanders and Priscilla Rose Howe, Backdirt, The Physics Room, 301 Montreal St. The Arts Centre Registry Additional Buildings. 10 March-21 April. Do you day dream about a place in the country where you can disconnect from the stresses of life surrounded by beauty of a natural environment?
This doesn’t need to be a day dream, because there is such a place only eight kilometres from Geraldine.
Built last year, the Fiery Peak luxury couples’ retreat is designed with the environment in mind. Set amongst trees, the cabin looks across farmland to the mountains. Sleep late in the king sized bed and wake up to bird song. Linger in a wood-fired hot tub under a star-filled sky or take a plunge in the natural spring-fed pool. Prepare dinner in the kitchen or you might like to barbeque your food on the deck while you watch the sun go down behind Fiery Peak. If you like to dine out there are some excellent restaurants and cafes to choose from in Geraldine.
Just relax at the retreat or enjoy some of the many activities in the area – horse treks and bush walks in Peel Forest, or ice skating, snow tubing and day-spa/ massage at Lake Tekapo. You could visit Aoraki/ Mt Cook, or the Lord of the Rings film site at Mt Sunday. The ski fields of Mt Dobson, Roundhill, and Mt Hutt are also not far away.
The perfect spot for a honeymoon –private, peaceful and luxurious - or treat yourself and someone special to a wonderful way to recharge your soul. Check out on your departure day is not until noon.
Book by email to kay@staygeraldine.nz, call 027 358 3022, or visit the website.

Afashion colour palette is a group of three to six di erent colours that look great together, and give you plenty of options for pairing with all the garments in your wardrobe. Think about the colours that look good on you, and the colours you surround yourself with in your home environment. If you need to seek help from a professional to determine what colours suit your skin tones best.
Or, you might try checking the palms of your hands to help determine your undertone. Holding your hands flat with palms facing up decide if you see blue, red or yellow most predominantly. If you see mostly blue then you are cool, or mostly yellow then you are warm.
There is no restriction on the number of colours that go into your palette, but there should be a balance between neutrals, complementary colours, accent colours and metallics.
Your neutral and complementary colours are your base colours, and your accent colours and metallics are your highlights.
The four main types of colour schemes are monochromatic, two-colour, threecolour, and four-colour. A monochromatic colour scheme uses one colour in varying tints and shades. Complementary colours are two colours that are opposite one another on the colour wheel, creating high contrast.

Searching for the right garment can be a question of quality and style, and the investment needs to last a lifetime. Davaar & Co’s jersey collection combine all three elements: look, warmth, and longevity.
In the early stages of the pandemic, Kate Macdonald started Davaar & Co with a simple dream: to recreate the homespun jersey her grandmother Sally used to make.
That simple dream grew into an ideology to reinstate the importance of wearing sustainable, naturally-made wool jumpers.
Kate values the need to keep her
products New Zealand made, as reflected in the production process. Each jersey is shorn on Kate’s family farm, with wool personally selected using technology that finds the best quality fleece fibres.
The wool then journeys across Timaru, Wellington and Dunedin, before returning home to the farm to be hand-packed by Kate and shipped to the buyer.
The full-circle process has “never been more important than now,” Kate says, highlighting the significance of supporting local. “To me, it’s so much more than just a jersey o the rack.”
Wool has many natural benefits that make it worth the premium, both to your wallet and the environment. Woollen fibres are naturally insulating and can acclimatise to your surroundings, retaining heat if you’re out in the cold, and releasing heat when amongst the warmth, the breathable fleece providing whichever comfort you need. It’s durability and non-allergenic qualities mean money well spent, a piece that can slip into every wardrobe and outfit choice with ease. Renewable and biodegradable, wool regrows and breaks down far quicker than synthetic substitutes.

Winter weather calls for comfort, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style.
Statement jewellery is unique, bold, and allows both men and women to express themselves and their personality through their jewellery.
Ancient civilisations, such as the Egyptians, used statement jewellery in ceremonies, rituals, and to show divine favour.
Many of today’s fashionistas use statement jewellery to express who they are. If you are considering buying a piece of statement jewellery, think first about what kind of jewellery you like to wear. Are you an earring person, love necklaces, or prefer cocktail rings and blingy bracelets? Choose quality, one-o , unique pieces.
NECKLACES – go for big, bold, colourful, and something that reflects your personality.
RINGS – one huge stone, or an intricate design, both work but try to stick to one statement ring per hand. Wearing too many statement pieces on one hand can divert the attention away from the piece that you want to highlight.
EARRINGS – versatile, and you can opt for a di erent style in each ear. Think large hoops, dazzling drops, and floral bouquets. BRACELETS – bracelets come in a variety of styles: cu , bangle, tennis, and more. Stackable bracelets are a great way to get the dramatic look of a statement bracelet while also adding personal flair. You can decide what colours and combinations to include, so the style is all your own.

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for winter is to protect yourself from the flu.
The flu can be a real winter bugbear, with symptoms ranging from fever, cough, and sore throat to body aches, fatigue, and even diarrhea and vomiting.
The risk is particularly high for those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and young children.
But fear not. You can take steps to protect yourself from the flu and promote winter wellness. Start by getting your annual flu vaccine, washing your hands regularly, and avoiding close contact with sick people.
If you do fall ill, stay home from work or school to avoid spreading the virus to others.
The BrainTree Wellness Centre is an innovative, world-first facility in Ōtautahi-Christchurch that supports people living with neurological conditions to live well in the community. Come in for a visit, we are open from 8:30am to 5pm weekdays with a café.
To make sure everyone has access to this important protection, certain groups are eligible for free flu vaccinations, including Māori communities, Pacific peoples aged 55 to 64 years, pregnant people, those aged 65+, people with certain medical conditions, and young children who have experienced respiratory illness.
So, if you want to fight the flu and stay healthy this winter, head on over to our Cashel Street or Forté pharmacy for a quick vaccination.
If you’re an employer, why not book us to come out and vaccinate your team, promoting a healthy and productive workplace.

Beyond Radiology in Merivale
o ers a first-class experience for both patients, and referrers.
Its di erence is that the business is fully New Zealand owned, and led by a team of highly qualified compassionate clinicians. The whole team pride themselves on putting each patient’s needs first, as they are guided through their imaging journey.
“We live and breathe the mantra going above and beyond, every single day with a quality, patient-focused, clinician-lead service to the people of Canterbury,” says Chief Medical O cer and Lead Radiologist Dr Philip Clark (pictured).
His dream to start a practice, based on ethics, values, and great service, started with his Grafton, Auckland clinic in 2021, which expanded rapidly.
“We have had so much wonderful feedback since we opened in Christchurch in March. The vision was to provide a better experience, which begins the moment you walk in the door. We treat all patients with the same dignity and respect all the way through. Irrespective of their background, every patient will be treated equally.”
As one of the first Māori radiologists to be trained in New Zealand, Dr Clark also practices at his clinics every day.
“I have had my hands on the wheel the whole way, with every detail,” he explains proudly. “This includes our logo, which represents a tree-trunk cross-section with what we call ‘the rings of life,’ representing
patients of all ages on all aspects of their health journey. Being so involved means I can be completely confident of our highquality service.
“We o er some of the best image quality available with brand new MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and X-ray equipment for diagnostic and interventional procedures.”
For example, the IT suite includes a portal allowing patients secure access to view their own images online.
“Our latest high-end MRI scanner utilises some of the most up-to-date Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, capturing extremely fine bone structures and cartilage detail that could not previously be seen,” Dr Clark says. “It’s extremely sophisticated and great to visualise pathology and structures in a di erent way.”
He adds that the technology only does so much, however, and it is the amazing team of experienced radiologists who pinpoint the answers, providing clarity in the reporting.
In Merivale, at 225 Papanui Road, with free onsite parking, the clinic is a welcoming haven for patients, with its natural timber and warm neutral interior. Significant planning has gone into the look and feel, to ensure a calm and comfortable space for patients.
Aesthetics aside, Dr Clark says the heart and soul is Beyond Radiology’s people. Call 03 964 7459 or visit the website.
Cantabrians are being warmly welcomed into an impressive new radiology clinic, with groundbreaking technology, aimed at removing stress from each patient’s unique health journey.

Brides of Merivale stock leading labels such as Made With Love, Kellylin Couture, Wendy Makin & French Collection, Miss Chloe, and arriving soon, Miss Scarlet.
“We recommend a bride starts the search at least 9-10 months prior to their wedding,” says owner Lisa Dermott. “Companies can take up to six months to deliver product. Starting early can eliminate last minute stress.”
If your wedding is within short time frames, there is a selection of gowns to
“Beading, sequins and texture is popular, and we are also seeing a lot of simple plain gowns. Style-wise, strapless and o -the-shoulder is making an impact. Layering with changeable pieces is a definite trend,” Lisa says.
Overall brides wear what suits their body, personality, and colouring. It’s a complex process to work through.
“As a store we are quite unique. All of our close-knit team are trained couturiers who can individually create a bespoke gown or alter our ready-made gowns to perfection. Bespoke made-to-measure gowns allow brides to create their perfect gown without compromise,” adds Lisa. “We are very proud to o er a full in-store service to our brides. It makes the process more special.”
That’s why seeking advice from experts can help.
“For our latest collaboration shoot we showcased a modern vibe within local Christchurch venues. With the weather thwarting our initial plan to be outside, our favourite professionals pulled together to create stunning images. Wedding dress trends this season see a focus on bows, splits in dresses, and an
architectural-type shaping that is sophisticated and elegant.
Around 90 percent of brides still wear veils, which is like the icing on the cake for a bridal look, but they are often single veils that sit at the nape, rather than the crown of the head.
Find your dream wedding dress at Wilkins Bridal.
The most special and significant dress a woman will ever wear, the wedding gown is also the most photographed, and the most valuable. From ball gowns to fitted fishtails, from soft flowing satins to layers of sparkle tulle, from modern, minimalist, celebrity chic, to the opulence of Mikado fabric, or detachable wings or sleeves. With all of this, and of course so much gorgeous lace, bridal fashion has never looked so good.
In Christchurch, To Cherish Bridal is at the centre of it all. Boutique owner Alison ensures that the selection of gowns in store represent all of this and so much more, saying “every bride is unique - we have something special for every taste and style.”
When searching for the perfect dress (that many have dreamed of since childhood), the advice and support of your bridal consultant is vital.
Alison and the team at ‘To Cherish’ have many years experience, and they have delighted thousands of brides, so they are uniquely placed to guide you towards your perfect bridal look. Not just the gown, but accessories and magical touches you didn’t even imagine as a small girl ‘playing bride’ with a pillow case veil in front of the big mirror in Mum’s room.
With all the challenges of Covid-19 in the last few years, Alison says that delivery times can sometimes be up to seven months, and up to two months for alterations if required - so plan to allow plenty of time.
There is also the option to choose many gowns ‘ready to wear’ from stock if you’re worried about timeframes.
Alison also encourages brides to be aware of things
like sizing variations between overseas brands and New Zealand clothing standards (often up to 2 sizes).
Alison also o ers this advice: “Book early, bring nude underwear and a strapless bra if possible, ready to enjoy your bridal shopping experience. It can be an emotionally and physically tiring process, but totally worth it when you find the perfect gown.
“You should do your best to communicate and tell us everything you’re looking for and dreaming of. The more we know the better service and advice we can provide. Most of all you should have fun trying and choosing your gown.”
Rain or shine, in a church or in a garden, there is one thing at the focal centre of almost every wedding - the dress!
If the latter is the case, consider proposing with a fun ring pop, or a symbolic placeholder ring, and plan a visit to a jeweller together to create a customdesigned ring that truly represents your love and commitment to each other.
If you’re seeking a one-of-akind wedding or engagement ring that’s a true reflection of your style and personality,
then look no further than Crawford Hill Jewellery located at 140 High Street in Rangiora.
During your consultation with co-owner and designer Kelly Crawford, you will work together to bring your ring ideas to life. With her technical expertise, she can turn your vision into a reality in precious metals, encouraging you to “do it your way”.
If you prefer natural or lab-grown diamonds, or vibrant
precious gems, the jeweller at Crawford Hill will help you create a unique ring that is as one-of-a-kind as you are.
From start to finish, they’ll work with you to ensure that your ring is everything you’ve ever dreamed of and more.
Whether you choose to surprise your partner or design the ring together, Crawford Hill has everything you need to make your ring dreams a reality.

Withmany stunning wedding styles to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide on the right one. Each style can have its own unique ambiance, from the classic elegance of a formal wedding to the rustic charm of a barn wedding. Make sure to consider the season you will be getting married and the colours you are certain you want to include. Keeping that in mind, here are some popular wedding styles to help you decide what is right for you.
Firstly, the classic wedding style is the crème de la crème of sophistication. This style typically features a formal ceremony with black-tie attire, a grand ballroom reception, and a sit-down dinner with fine china and crystal glassware. The classic
wedding style is perfect for couples who appreciate simple and elegant beauty.
On the other hand, for couples who prefer a more relaxed, free-spirited, and natural ambiance, they’ll want to go for the boho aesthetic. The boho style usually features an outdoor ceremony, rustic decor, and a casual reception with a bu etstyle dinner.
Channel the 70s when thinking boho, think flared wedding sleeves, curled and braided hair, flower crowns, and dried florals. Next up, the beach wedding style is perfect for couples who lap up the sun, sand, and surf. Modernwedding cakes come in all shapes and sizes, single and multiple tiered, plain and fancy.
A wedding cake was originally a luxury item, and a sign of celebration and social status (the bigger the cake, the higher the social standing). Early wedding cakes in England and early America were traditionally fruit cakes, topped with marzipan and icing.
During ancient Greek and Roman nuptials, the groom broke bread over the bride’s head, to symbolise her submission, the end of her purity, and to represent good luck and fertility.
Fromyour hair to dress and gorgeous sun-kissed skin, there’s a lot to coordinate.
If you’re heading down the aisle and thinking about getting a tan, there’s a few things to keep in mind – most importantly is to go to a professional 2-3 days before the big day. They can take the stress (and streaks!) out of tanning and leave you looking fabulous.
Tan in the City is Christchurch’s newest boutique tanning salon and beauty bar. They’ve been tanning specialists for over ten years up in Auckland and go above and beyond, using the science behind tanning to pick the best shade for you. They use high-quality smallbatch products to leave you walking away looking flawless.
For brides, they recommend their Deluxe Tan – first applying a prep spray to ensure a long-lasting tan. They will finish o your service with a tan-drying powder that removes tackiness and, most importantly, stop transfer to keep your gown perfect. All their tanning products are alcohol, fragrance and paraben free, vegan, and hypoallergenic.
Additionally, Tan in the City can take care of your eyelashes, eyebrows and waxing before your special day. Bookings are encouraged for bridal services – reach out to the team to discuss your needs.
There’s no denying the pressures that go with getting married, especially when it comes to looking your best.
Love has four letters, and so does cake, and no wedding is complete without a generous helping of both.
While most people understand that you can’t have a wedding without a wedding celebrant, that celebrant’s role is far wider than simply being the facilitator of the legal requirements for getting married.
Happy is the bride the sun shines on, or so the adage goes.
boutique weddings have been popular post-Covid-19.
Gibson, a celebrant for some 14 years knows that celebrants need to be peopleoriented, compassionate and tolerant, as well as accepting and accommodating of di erences.
“My aim is always to make each couple’s ceremony unique, to reflect what makes them who they are and what makes them di erent. I help couples through all of the marriage process, o er ideas for their ceremony and always listen to help them create something to reflect their wishes and make their wedding day memorable. Flexibility is the key along with a good helping of creativity.”
Jenni has loved every minute of the 130 wedding ceremonies she has performed.
From an initial meeting with a couple to discuss their ideas for a ceremony, advising on the legalities, helping write wedding vows, suggesting music and readings, right through to ensuring everything and everyone is in place for the big day, Jenni is able to co-ordinate your ceremony from start to finish. “I am happy to perform my ceremonies anywhere in New Zealand, at any time of the day and at any location from on a boat in a harbour to on top of a mountain.” As well as being a celebrant, Jenni is also a Wedding Planner/Coordinator for small intimate bespoke weddings. Jenni o ers a truly comprehensive, personalised service. Call her at 021723089.
These days there’s no need to worry about the weather, keeping in the shade, or out of the rain, if your wedding aisle is down a purpose-built event pavilion.

our grazing tables are abundant, beautifully presented, and decked out with greenery — the way great food deserves to be served.” Renee agrees, sharing that the catering arm of Smoke ‘n’ Barrel began with the couple catering their own wedding over five years ago.
“We prioritised flavour over ‘frills’ when it came to catering our own wedding. We believe that simple ingredients prepared well make the most memorable feasts.
The food at your celebration is important. It shouldn’t just be good; it should be incredible.

“We aim to take classic Texas BBQ up several notches by combining it with the best NZ products and a little creativity to create flavours you won’t find anywhere else,” adds Cory.
“Our salads are big and bold, our sauces are homemade, and
“We’ve always been mobile caterers, but now we can o er our own venue as well,” says Cory, noting the restaurant is also the ideal place to hold tastings for prospective couples.

Wedding cakes have their roots in Ancient Rome. Marriage ceremonies ended with a scone-like wheat or barley cake broken over the bride’s head for luck and fertility. Today things are rather different and the options in wedding cake design and flavour are endless.
Mother and daughter Sally Holt and Kate Podmore of Twisted Flour know that a wedding cake is more than just a centrepiece at the wedding reception. It’s a work of art by its creator. That’s what gives them the greatest pleasure.
“The size, design, colour and flavour of a cake is up to our couples”, say Sally and Kate. “We will do whatever they want, after all it is for their special day.
More and more we are finding that couples are daring to be di erent, playing around with colour, texture and shape. If they
have a crazy idea for a unique dream wedding cake we will put our creative genius to work, making that idea a reality. ”Sally and Kate love to live up to their name. They say they are a bit “twisted” and “one of a kind” as are their cakes. “We make bold cakes that wow”, they say. Yet behind the quirkiness and wit of many of their creations there is real skill and experience. Sally has been creating wedding
cakes for over 40 years. She has a floristry background as well and takes real pleasure in creating florals for cakes whether that be with fondant, real flowers or artificial flowers. Kate has followed her mother’s passion and has a special talent in making fondant figurines for cakes to make them truly personalised for the clients.
Each cake these girls make is a precious creation, not to be
let out of their sight until they deliver it to a venue, position it on its table and make any necessary finishing touches.
“When you have a cake that might weigh 70 kilos or be several tiers high, you really want to make sure that it reaches its destination in one piece.”
Cutting the cake is the highlight of the wedding reception - something no guest wants to miss. They certainly will not want to miss the cutting and the eating of a Twisted Flour cake. As Sally and Kate say “You might lose your mind a little when you taste our cakes.”
“Documentary-style techniques capture those fleeting moments that flash by on the day,” says wedding photographer Lavender Turner. “I’m constantly scanning for candid moments, from all di erent angles. She suggests a relaxed, unhurried schedule, making time for fun photo opportunities, such as with family during a cocktail hour. While always keeping colour and lighting natural, Lavender often uses romantic trends from decades past, like film cameras on the tables, and also prints o digital snaps for a sneak preview at the reception.
“Every wedding is very di erent, even culturally, so I meet them beforehand to get to know them as a couple, and the wedding party during morning preparations.”
The open-minded creative loves wedding planning and timeless trends, also utilising her marketing skills in brand photography. Her a ordable packages can include a videographer.
Christchurch-based but travel obsessed, Lavender does weddings around the country, absorbing 40 percent of clients’ travel costs.

Her
Hair - Depending on your gown, you may opt for an updo, or a relaxed hair down style. Do some online research for hairstyle inspiration, and take those ideas to your hair trial. If you want to include any hair accessories, buy them before the trial, so you can see how the entire look comes together.
Makeup - Decide on the level of makeup you’ll feel most confident in, whether it’s a glammed-up look, or something more subtle. Book a makeup test run to ensure you’re happy with your look for the big day.
Him
Hair - To ensure great looking hair on your wedding day, schedule an appointment with your barber at least three weeks in advance. Waiting until the last minute may result in disappointment, leaving you with no choice but to trust a new barber with your hair just before your big day. To avoid any hair emergencies, book early and confirm it beforehand.
Facials - Facials aren’t just for women. Booking in facials leading up to the wedding will help you achieve glowing, clear skin that will look great in photos.
When it comes to wedding planning, it’s easy to forget about the things that will make you feel confident on your big day. Here are some tips to make your wedding day less stressful.

On a couple’s wedding day, they want to look their best. Bridal accessories for him and her can elevate their outfits and add their personal aesthetics to a day they’ll remember forever.
For the bride
The wedding gown is the centrepiece, but bridal accessories can pull together the overall look. A floral crown or headband with colourful flowers and foliage can add a bohemian touch to the bridal look. When it comes to a veil, there are many styles to choose from, including colourful floral embroidered veils on trend now. Bridal jewellery, such as a necklace or earrings, can add sparkle and glamour to the outfit. Some brides carry a small clutch so that, if need be, they have their essential items for the reception.
Shoes are also an important accessory for the bride. While comfort is key, many brides choose to wear nude or silver heels for the elegance they provide. The shoes should complement the dress and be comfortable enough to wear all day.
For the groom
Accessories are less varied for the groom, but no less important. The groom’s outfit is typically a suit or tuxedo. A tie or bowtie can be chosen to match the colours of the wedding theme, or to complement the bride’s outfit. A pair of suspenders can be a stylish and practical accessory for the groom, especially if he’s planning on dancing the night away. A pocket square can also be added for a pop of colour. Cu inks can be chosen to match the wedding band, and a watch can add a touch of luxury to the outfit.
When it comes to bridal accessories for both the bride and groom, there are also some gender-neutral options. For example, a boutonniere is a traditional accessory for the groom, yet it can also be worn by the bride as a statement piece. Also, sunglasses, whether for the outdoor ceremony or for a cool photo shoot, matching sunglasses can be a very stylish addition to the bridal look.
One of the most reassuring words in the English language, or in any language for that matter, is the word “experience”- it represents something that has stood the test of time.
When it comes to planning an intimate wedding, a hotel can be the perfect setting for a memorable and romantic celebration.
Whena couple decide to marry, alongside the date and venue, the most important thing to secure is their celebrant. An experienced celebrant does not just perform the marriage ceremony - they elevate it.
Graham Jones has been a celebrant for 23 years, and has performed around 800 wedding ceremonies during that time. “I have been married for 43 years. I believe in marriage, and I believe in love,” Graham says.
Graham believes the wedding ceremony sets the tone for the whole day. “If you put e ort into that, everything
else falls into place.”
Graham likes his initial consultation with the couple to be in their own home.
“A relaxed environment helps us to get to know each other and see if we are a good fit, which is so important.”
Graham’s popularity as a celebrant has seen him perform intergenerational ceremonies within families.
“Trust is everything. People know me and my work.
They know their marriage ceremony is in the surest of hands.”

Photo: Anne GallowayAll types of occasions call for special breakfasts, from the fast approaching Mother’s Day, to drinks and nibbles when getting ready for a special event such as your wedding day.
Starting the day in style often includes bubbles, from bubble baths to drinking bubbly Champagne.
If it’s too early for champers on its own, maybe add a little orange, pineapple or guava juice.
Breakfast is arguably the most important meal of the day, the time
when you add fuel to your body so it can make it through the day ahead. No fuel and you may find yourself tired, listless and grinding to a halt. Special occasion breakfasts are easy peasy with a bit of imagination. Having them catered is one option, another is to DIY. Here are some suggestions for the latter:
Gain a new perspective of the Garden City, and travel to a place less-known. Sit back, relax and enjoy the surroundings in an intimate setting. Enjoy the best pizza and cocktails in town.

Fruit mu ns (blueberry, strawberry, or lemon maybe), with fresh fruit on the side.
High tea-style with dainty club sandwiches, macarons, and bite-sized savouries.
Pate, fruit, and cheese platters for those who like to graze. Don’t forget some chocolate.
Blinis with caviar and cream cheese, avocado and tomato, or ginger prawns with sweet chilli sauce.
Often with special occasions, friends and family continue on long after the main catering is finished.
That’s when platters come into their own, with tempting sweet and savoury treats to accommodate those latenight munchies. Usually at the end of the night, let’s call it supper time, the demand is for lighter fare, with people grazing their way through fruits, cheeses and small dessert-style o erings.
Making it all finger food, or bite-sized helps, as do cocktail napkins, and side plates for the messy ones. Don’t forget tea, co ee, and a plentiful water supply, and it should keep everyone happy until they call it quits for the night.
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS:
DESSERT PLATTER – Heaped high with chocolate almonds, marshmallows, mini snack bars, after dinner mints, grapes, strawberries, and dried apricots.
SAVOURY PLATTER – Bite-sized savoury pastries, tasty vol au vents (try thinly sliced rare roast beef with horse-radish cream for a filling, or creamy balsamic mushrooms), and blinis.
ANTIPASTO PLATTER – A traditional mix cheese, cured meats, olives, marinated or pickled vegetables, and bread or crackers. Also try adding artichoke hearts, mushrooms, roasted peppers, eggplant, zucchini, fennel, feta, and mozzarella balls.
SEAFOOD PLATTER – Hot and cold smoked salmon, smoked fish, mussels (marinated and smoked), prawns, oysters in season, along with hummus, and dipping sauces.
MEGA GRAZING PLATTER – Baked cheese, such as brie or camembert, topped with herbs and olive oil, figs, grapes, thinly sliced cured meats, such as sausage or chorizo, savoury crackers, crusty bread or breadsticks, nuts and olives, dips, such as hummus, chutney or taramosalata, and a variety of cheeses, such as soft-rind goat’s cheese, a hard cheese (like cheddar, or gruyere), and a blue cheese such as stilton.
TOP FINGER FOODS TO TRY:
Pigs in a Blanket.
Antipasto Skewers. Deviled Eggs.
Jalapeño Poppers. Cauliflower Bites.
Vegetarian Stu ed Mushrooms. Green and black olives. Salami.
Mini sausage rolls. Mini pizzas. Bruschetta.
With all sorts of dietary requirements being catered for today, it’s good to have a couple of tried and true gluten-free options in your cooking arsenal. This is a rich, moist, flourless chocolate cake that can be served on its own, or layered into special occasion cakes.

4
5

Engagements, birthdays, anniversaries often call for photo shoots, meaning the participants may disappear for more than an hour to have photographs taken. While guests are usually catered for with food and drink during that time, spare a thought for those under the camera lens.
A special goodie picnic basket with wine and nibbles will help the time pass quicker, and do away with grumbling tums. It might also make a perfect photo prop.
Of course, any time is a good time for a picnic. A sunny day, a romantic date, school holidays, a country walk, take your pick and pack your picnic.
In times past, most families had a wicker picnic basket, and although many of those have now been replaced by chilly bins, there’s still something lovely about taking the time to pack a picnic basket. Glasses, china plates and real cutlery add to the occasion.
Here are some suggestions:
SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY
A blanket, a beach, some bubbly (or beer), scented candles, and fine food. Roast chicken, coleslaw, and potato salad are easily transported, as is cheesecake for dessert.
FRENCH TAKEAWAYS
A selection of cheeses, salami, pate, olives, grapes, and a crusty French stick, along with your favourite red or white wine. Add some easy listen café-style jazz and enjoy.
AMERICAN STYLE
Bu alo wings, ranch slaw, potato salad, pasta salad, watermelon, devilled eggs, lemonade, and stu to make sandwiches, like cold cuts, cheese slices, and bread. Finish it o with a slice of apple pie.
An average British picnic involves going with friends to a sunny outdoor space, such as a park or beach, to eat, drink and socialise. Picnic food tends to be cold dishes such as Scotch eggs, sausage pies, salads, sandwiches, crisps, and in quiche, washed down with Pimms or lemonade.
DID YOU KNOW?
The word picnic is actually French ‘pique-nique’, which means eating outdoors.

Not everyone has a ‘green thumb’, however if you love the look of plants and flowers there are numerous ways to introduce them to your interior design, without the risking of killing o prized greenery. Here are some ideas:
Wallpaper
Inject botanical-inspired design with some contemporary botanical or tropical print wallpaper. These work well on feature walls in living rooms, casual dining spaces or bedrooms. Contemporary botanical-inspired wallpaper prints vary from bold, large-leaf tropical prints and jungle scenes, to more vintage illustrative-style botanical prints. Choose your feature wallpaper with your other furnishings and interior style
Interior ideas
• Mid-century style wicker chairs
• Botanical print duvet
in mind to avoid overkill, designclash and too much visual clutter.
Home accessories
Integrate carefully-selected botanical-themed soft furnishings to accent your botanical design, Consider botanical print cushions and wall-art as well as furnishings, drawing on natural materials like jute, rattan, wicker, linen and natural cotton. Black and white geometric print throws, rugs, or other accents, work well with botanical palettes. For a contemporary botanical ‘Jungalow’ look that’s still sophisticated and refined, work with mid-century lines and furnishings, combine vintage metals, and rich fabrics, such as velvet and leather, with lighter furnishings and fabrics in rugs and throws.
• Tropical print cushion in a contemporary blush and muted green palette
• Green velvet mid-century armchair
• Glass and timber co ee table
• Mid-century style vases with geometric patterning in muted earthy tones
• Vintage-style botanical wall prints
• Contemporary jute ottoman with timber legs – organic and understated

One such trend is the curve, which is still being seen in 2023 interior design, although not necessarily in an architectural way.
Think twice about adding an arched doorway or built-in niche. Instead, embrace curves by opting for furniture or accent pieces that embrace the curvy trend.
TABLES – side tables, dining tables, and co ee tables can be round, oval, or undulating.
LIGHTS – an easy option for adding curves. Use curvy pendant lighting, wall, and standard lamps to create ambient atmosphere.
RUGS – another easy way to bring curves to life in your interior.
ART – look for round geometric shapes in art, or reframe pictures with circular mounts.
CHAIRS – from dining to lounging chairs, options are multiple.
COUCHES – gently curved, with round ottomans, or semi-circular, couches add instant curves to a lounge.

Redesigning the structure of your bathroom, along with the placement of fixtures and fittings, can change the whole dynamic of the room, turning it into something completely new, giving you a sense of luxury every day.
Whether you’re renovating an en-suite in your forever home, wanting to create a family-friendly bathroom in your first home, or upgrading a bathroom in preparation for sale, the team at BLR Projects Ltd can help.
“We are a family-based firm – in fact we are brothers in-law,” say Lewis Cullen and Ryan Eccleton. In this team Lewis looks after all things to do with plumbing and drainage while Ryan is the builder. Together they thoroughly enjoy renovation work.
“Renos are often more challenging than installing a bathroom in a new house – which we do as well.
“It’s great too, to meet and form a rapport with homeowners who really appreciate what we are able to achieve for them. We take pains to make people feel at ease and to take the pressure o them by project managing the entire renovation process from design to completion with all the electrical, plastering, painting, tiling and flooring jobs that go into the finished room.
“We source the very best bathroom products from the massive range at Plumbing World. All our clients need to think about is how great their new space will look,” they add. www.blrprojects.co.nz

Remember that anything 40 years or older is classed as vintage, while items 100 years or older are antiques. Here are three things you should consider buying vintage, rather than new:
These are more likely to be made from solid woods, whereas newer pieces are usually made from laminate, veneer, or other synthetic materials that don’t hold up as well. Vintage wooden furniture often tends to feature marks, imperfect edges, or scu s, adding to its character.
Vintage upholstery has generally been hand-done, which gives it good bones that are much harder to find with mass producedupholstery. Buying mismatched chairs can also be fun and you can tie them together with the same colour scheme or upholstery. Add your own touch with some funky modern upholstery.
Mixing and matching vintage glassware and crockery adds a fun, whimsical look to a space. Curate unique sets that are just as beautiful as newer ones by combining contemporary with classic.
The Little Car Company recently showcased four of its scaled, electrified icons at the International Concours of Elegance (ICE) at St. Moritz.
An event like no other, the ICE brings together car collectors and enthusiasts from across the globe to celebrate beautiful and historic feats of engineering, in an equally beautiful setting.
Visitors test drove the Bugatti Baby II, Aston Martin DB5
Junior, Ferrari Testa Rossa J and the newly launched Pacco Gara Testa Rossa J, skilfully tackling an ice race circuit with silverware up for grabs. Each vehicle was carefully converted to be driven on the ice, from adding studded tyres to integrating limited slip di erential.
Within the last century of motoring, the look of the motor car has undergone many stylistic revolutions.
There have also been key figures, who have given us fresh, beautiful, striking, and sometimes controversial designs.
Harley Earl of General Motors was a pioneer for big fins and chrome during Detroit’s halcyon days of the 1950s.
Leonardo Fioravanti, Marcello Gandini and
car which one could rightly describe as ugly, there seems to be hardly any dynamic individualism when it comes to mainstream car design. The mid-sized SUV segment is a case in point. Put the current competition next to each other side on, and the term “separated at birth” springs to mind.
2023 OPEL MOKKA-E
PRICE: $62,990
CLEAN CAR REBATE: $8625
ENGINE: 50kWh battery
POWER: 100kW
Now this German marque steeped in history is beginning to make waves in New Zealand. This brings us onto the Opel Mokka-e you see here, one of a handful of new models now for sale over here.
Starting at $62,990, the Mokka-e is the allelectric variant of the regular petrol powered Mokka urban SUV. Its electrical prowess is thanks to a 50kWh battery powering the front wheels. The Mokka is also funky and modern to look at with its two-tone paint scheme and clean-cut LED Matrix headlights. Many contemporaries serve up a clean-cut design which looks modern, some tend to lack a splash of colourful character. This is not so with the Opel Mokka.
The interior is also nicely laid out, but I wish the colour on the outside continued on the inside. The switchgear feels chunky and well put together. It is also nice to have toggle switches for a change instead of touch buttons everywhere which seems to be the norm these days.
It is also well equipped with plenty of features including wireless charging, heated steering wheel, heated seats and safety features like lane keep assist, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.
Passenger entry and exit is decent for those at the front and the back, though those with longer legs may find rear legroom a tad restrictive to those in the front. Head room is
pretty decent and while you sit quite high up, visibility is also pretty good all around.
Open the boot and you find 310L of space. This grows to 1060L with that second row stored away flat. It’s quite easy to load and unload plenty of whatever too.
Around town the Mokka-e serves up an entertaining and engaging drive. Its compact dimensions also mean tight turns and innercity manoeuvrability are a doddle. It’s not the most rapid EV around but it is rather smooth nonetheless.
It is also phenomenally quiet. Tyre roar is quite minimal but combination of very good build quality and that electric powertrain means the Mokka-e serves up a library reading room level of silence, even at motorway speeds. Overall, the Mokka-e is full of character and a pleasant way of silently getting around.
With plenty going for it, Opel’s Mokka-e injects plenty of colour and character into the ever-growing BEV SUV segment.

Look back on the history of Opel and you find everything from bicycles to rocket powered land speed record cars.
Volvo is certainly not veering from its plans to sell only BEVs by 2030. With its entire range now consisting of only pure electric, or electric hybrid cars, an all-new model EV has joined the Swedish stable. Ben Selby reports.
Essentially an all-electric coupe-like version of the XC40 SUV, the Volvo C40 Recharge starts at $87,900 drive away for the entry level Plus feature here. Along with those handsome “Thor’s Hammer” LED pixel headlights, the C40 gets slick looking sloping back and LED taillight arrangement. It also sits lower by 56mm than the XC40 despite sharing the same platform.
The C40 Recharge Plus gets a 170kW/330Nm electric motor powering the front wheels from a 67kWh battery. You also have the option of the top spec Ultimate with an extra electric motor and 300kW of grunt, but this will set you back an extra $15k. Both models have AC and DC fast charging capability and Volvo claim 438kms of range on a single charge.
Get in and you realise the C40 Recharge shares aspects with its relatives from Polestar. The most obvious of these features is the lack of needing to press a starter button to get going. Simply hop inside, belt on, select drive, and you are o . The C40, impressively, just does it itself.
The interior of the C40 is quintessentially modern Volvo, but there is next to no leather here at all. The C40 is the first Volvo model to have a sustainable interior from the get-go. My test car even had dash trim which displayed a Google-like street view of Gothenburg (Volvo’s hometown).
Talking of the tech giant, the C40’s touchscreen infotainment system now incorporates Google Maps. The voice
activation system also allows Google to act out voice commands relating to the car by saying things like, “hey google, turn the passenger seat heater on.” It also allows you to use Google Assistant and Google Play Store.
There is still a distinctly premium feel to your surroundings. Head and legroom up front are pretty decent and the same can be said for the rear despite its sloping coupe-like roofline. The only downside about its slippery looking rear is rear visibility which takes a tumble, i.e., it isn’t the best.
Throttling o for the first time, I found there to be no regenerative braking. That was until you activate “one-pedal drive” in the C40’s drive settings. While being a tad intense at times, you will never need to use the brake pedal in this mode.
The C40 also claws back points by being a delight to drive. It is relatively spritely and handles the bends well too. However, it is happiest sauntering along in a cruise using as little electricity as possible.
Despite just missing out on the Government Clean Car Discount, the Volvo C40 Recharge Plus is a solid premium feeling o ering and worthy of your BEV buying shortlist.
