Inspiring life lessons By Melinda Collins

A week before Christchurch Boys’ High School senior monitor Jake Bailey was due to deliver his end of year speech in 2015, he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – the fastest growing cancer known to man.

Photo: Māia Health Foundation 6 July 19, 2018 Metropol

How blown away were you when your end of year speech made global headlines? I suppose it was something you never could expect or foresee happening; certainly I wouldn’t have ever imagined it happening. The only way to describe it would be absolutely surreal. It was incredibly humbling to see my words having an impact on the world and seeing people receiving my speech so positively. You story is such a powerful one, when you delivered that speech, you were literally battling for your life. What has this experience taught you? That’s a question I get asked a lot and it’s a tough one to answer; there are too many things I could say, and it has taught me so much. It has certainly changed the way in which I approach every single day; the way I treat every single opportunity; the way I treat the people around me. It’s a real appreciation of life and how delicate it is. If there was a key message you could get across to New Zealand about life, what would that message be? I guess it would be how fragile life is, how it can change beyond recognition in a week, a day or even a split second. While that sounds incredibly pessimistic, it’s quite the opposite I think. You have to understand this in order to live every day to the absolute fullest, with passion and pride. The experience I went through at the age I was and the time of life I was in, I didn’t have an understanding of how delicate the world around me was and how quickly that could be taken away. Now I do, and it’s made me a better person. How has life changed for you in the past three years? It has changed beyond recognition and far beyond what I would have envisioned three years ago. I think I’ve changed so much as a person, I suppose most people would change a lot from 18-21, but certainly life has changed so much. Moving countries when I was just 18 was a challenge, but to get to write a book, film a documentary, do public speaking for such varied audiences – that has been absolutely life changing. I’ve been so lucky and honoured to be able to experience the things that I have and to be able to share my journey with people. Why is your role as an official ambassador for the Māia Health Foundation so important to you? Māia is something that is hugely important to me. I’m incredibly passionate about their cause. When I was going through treatment in the hospital, I was so

fortunate to be in the hands of the most amazing medical team, but at the same time I was acutely aware that these people weren’t always working with the most amazing facilities or in the most up to date settings. I saw the Māia Health Foundation as an opportunity to give back to them; to do my part to say thanks for what they’ve done for me. The Māia values and principles align with me and the vision I have for the Canterbury healthcare system and the people within it, and taking it from good to great. Do you wish the cancer never happened? That’s a great question, and the answer is that I wouldn’t change it for anything. I wouldn’t give up my experience for anything in the world, not just because of the opportunities or things that have come in my path as a result, in fact it’s nothing to do with that, but simply for the lessons it’s taught me in life, and how it has changed how I will live the rest of my life so drastically. I will go through life as a much better person, and with far more gratitude, than if I hadn’t gone through those tough months. People often seem to be surprised by that response, but it’s something I find that I have in common with many people who have had a similar journey. Putting the sporting stuff aside, Lance Armstrong once said he wouldn’t change it (the cancer) for the world- “Why would I want to change for even a day the most important and shaping event in my life?” That sums up how I feel about cancer. The world has taken so much from your inspiring speech and who you’ve become throughout all of this, what have you taken from this experience? I suppose what I’ve taken is that the world is a good place and filled with good people. You’d be easily misled into thinking otherwise if you view the world through the news or negative interactions you might have. But when you take a step back, certainly what I’ve learned from my experience, is that the world is filled with people that want to help and care for others. I guess that’s been the overarching theme in my experiences - I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by incredibly kind people, to share my story with them, and have them as part of my story. This relates to the Māia Health Foundation again - it’s all about people who want to make a positive impact on the world around them, by giving back to those people who help us all when we need it most. He still did the speech and the video of this went on to touch the hearts of millions, drawing support from across the globe. Now in remission, he is focusing his energy on supporting the health system that has done so much for him. Metropol talks to Jake about his inspiring life lessons.

fter having each of my three small humans, there was nothing better than the feeling of being able to lay in bed on my tummy, without a 9 pound baby encroaching on my space. Of course, prior to each pregnancy, I had been mindlessly laying on my flat tummy for many months, in fact years, with no reference point to how lucky I was. It’s easy to take what we have for granted. In fact, many of the luxuries we experience in New Zealand on a day to day basis are luxuries many don’t get – freedom, access to fresh water, even our healthcare system. Māia Health Foundation was designed to take Canterbury’s healthcare system from good to great and, to do this, it has enlisted help from some pretty inspiring locals, including Jake Bailey. Jake has been through some of the most trying circumstances imaginable and, despite this, or perhaps even because of it, he continues to focus his time and energy into doing good. We talk to Jake on page 6 about the inspiring life lessons he has taken from his battle with cancer and how he is giving back to the healthcare system that has done so much for him. Life is precious and, at least as far as we know, we’re only given one. Why not remind yourself how lucky you are to be healthy, alive and to have your loved ones with you, or simply that you can sleep on your tummy. I challenge every single one of our readers to re-frame their day to day annoyances and focus on how precious all of our lives are because, ABCas AUDITED we know, things can change in a blink of an eye. After all, those wrinkles show we had something to laugh about; that round tummy shows we had food on our tables and those grey hairs show we had family to worry about. Food for thought?

wisdom Now he’s using his voice to support the Cystic Fibrosis NZ Canterbury branch, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in New Zealand and Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Week 13-19 August. Metropol caught up with Nigel ahead of his Christchurch presentation for the charity, Adventures in Parentland on 21 August.

You’ve made a name for pushing against political correctness, how damaging is it for people to try to be ‘perfect’ and politically correct at all times? The politically correct thing has taken on a whole new tone with Donald Trump. When I was talking about that stuff, I was talking about being overprotective of our kids, now political correctness has become a catch phrase, so it’s not a term I use anymore. When I used it, I was just saying raising kids is hard, we’re not perfect. There’s always been a lot of pressure on kids and with the rise of internet and the ability to Google everything, it’s become harder. It’s hard to know how to prepare kids for a future that is increasingly uncertain. Half the problem is experts saying ‘if you don’t do things my way, you’re going to screw your kids up’. It’s actually hard to screw up kids. Yes you will be imperfect and do things that in hindsight you wouldn’t do, but that’s raising humans. How fulfilling is it for you to be able to use your high profile to support worthy organisations such as Cystic Fibrosis Canterbury? Being a TV presenter is stupid. Being on TV is an empty and vacuous thing. There’s nothing in it, but what it does mean is you can use that profile to do things that are positive and helpful, such as helping to raise funds and doing TV shows about things that are helpful for people. If you can leverage off the public profile for good, then it makes the rest of it bearable. The public profile is the least enjoyable part of what I do. I’d rather make tele and nothing else, but it’s good to be able to use that for something this positive. What are some of the myths about parenting? Almost all of them! It’s endless; we overthink just about everything; we think everything is more important than it is; we micro critique every single thing. Parenting is about the lifetime score not your daily average. There are solo parents with no support, who can’t provide their kids with the basics, but if they love them and do their best, they’ll be ok. Of course it would be nice to not have kids in inadequate housing etc, but the biggest thing is that you love them and do the best you can. There’s this myth of the ideal family; mum, dad, dad goes to work, mum’s at home totally focused on the kids all the time. It’s nonsense. Kids have been raised in imperfect families for forever; we didn’t always read them 50 bedtime stories. If what you’re doing, you’re doing it for them, it will work out fine.

Did you put your own parents through their paces? I was a sh**. I thought I knew best when I was 14 and of course I didn’t, because I was 14. I had a mum and dad – dad worked, mum didn’t so mum was always there. We didn’t have lots of money; dad was a builder when people weren’t building houses. But I had parents that cared about me; I didn’t have a pony, but having parents that care about you is a big deal and not everyone gets that.

How does successful parenting look to you? I don’t think there is such thing. So long as everyone loves each other at the end, if they’re decent enough people and look after the people around them. I don’t think it means your kids need all the trophies or you’re at all the awards ceremonies because that’s bulsh**. Do your kids know how to go about life? Because life is often sh***y. There are huge numbers of kids experiencing depression etc. What I think it’s about is teaching kids how to live an imperfect life. You need to give them strategies so when they have sh***y times – which they will – they can deal with it and chug on. What would some of your key advice be for struggling parents? Embrace the imperfectness of it. What people need is simple strategies that strip away the self-doubt. Never believe anyone that says ‘if you don’t do things my way, you will damage them’. The most important thing you have with your kids is your relationship with them. That’s the building blocks for everything. It’s the relationship when they get older that’s important, they can say they hate you; it may take 20 years, but they will eventually come around. Humans are wired to connect, you just need to keep believing in that and keep backing them and you’ll eventually get there – in a messy and imperfect way. Part of the problem is the belief that some people have their sh** together. That doesn’t mean there’s no point, so stop trying; it means embrace the imperfect things in life. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? We’ve got a neuroscience series coming out soon. I think it’s some of the best tele I’ve been involved in. It’s looking at what we know about the brain. It’s been amazing to make. So that will be out soon. Then I’m working on a parenting app. Books are ok, but people today don’t have the time to read a whole book written for all parents, because all kids are different. I wanted to build an app for what to do for your kid, not a generic kid. Nigel will be presenting Adventures in Parentland for Cystic Fibrosis Canterbury at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 21 August. MakingD Happen By Céline Gibson

Never tell huge-hearted philanthropist Scott Gilmour that disadvantaged kids can’t dream, for he has a beautiful story; it goes something like this: Southland-raised Scott was working for Intel in Portland, Oregon when he spied a newspaper article one morning that changed his life. It was about New York’s I Have A Dream Foundation and its founder Eugene Lang.

14 July 19, 2018 Metropol

n

S

cott was so inspired by the article that he had a dream of his own – to give disadvantaged children back home the same opportunities he’d had. In 2003, the first I Have A Dream Foundation was launched in New Zealand and so began a life-changing journey for 53 Auckland children. The pilot project needed to assess whether the US model (34 years of success, with more than 200 projects impacting some 17,000 young people) would fit within the New Zealand framework; 15 years later, the results speak for themselves. Scott says early intervention is crucial. “Investing in an entire generation from ages 5 through to 20 breaks intergenerational poverty.”

Scott and I Have A Dream co-founder and coach Ant Backhouse took an entire decile 1A class from Wesley Primary School, Mt Roskill – children destined, by their own admission, to take up with gangs and gang culture. Together they invested 15 years of support and mentoring, including paying for their tertiary education and the outcomes radically changed. From that very same class emerged neuroscience and engineering students, an aspiring local body politician, a surgical nurse, a youth worker and a fashion graduate. Fact: 80 percent of these Dreamers went on to tertiary studies, versus 30 percent of a comparison group. Scott cites the following six points of difference as to their resounding, incomparable success:

I Have A Dream has now expanded to 1,500 disadvantaged youth across four schools in the Whangarei district. Scott wants to get the Government on board so every New Zealand school can help kids triumph over adversity. In ŌtautahiChristchurch, there are many kids afraid to dream; could you be the person to change that? If so, Scott would love to hear from you. Visit www.ihaveadream.org.nz.

Action-packed This July the residents of Fitzroy of Merivale are full of festive cheer as well as the delicious traditional luncheon, served at the annual Mid-Winter Christmas celebration. It’s a highly anticipated event on Fitzroy’s entertainment calendar, along with Cup Day, St Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day, and the programme of concerts and visiting entertainers throughout the year.

A boutique establishment with just 29 rooms, the relatively small size ensures that the rest home is more like a community than anything else. Its history and character are enhanced by the grace of the antiques throughout and views of the traditionalstyle sunlit garden as you move through the establishment. Once outside, it’s just steps to the shopping and services of Merivale Mall, the city bus and taxi stands for residents who value their independence. Fitzroy of Merivale is unique, not only in its size and great location – it is one of the few privately owned rest homes left in Christchurch. Its owners for the past two plus years, Vanessa and Daryn Pirie are very hands on at Fitzroy. “Everyone knows each other well and the staff and residents truly care for each other,” Vanessa says.

Bit of bold If neutral is the name of your style game, then this one’s for you! Accessories are the easiest way to amp up an outfit. Add some vibrancy with just a ‘bit of bold’ – that is some red tassel earrings or a hot rainbow cross-body bag. Shoes are another exceptional way to add some colour to your life. Opposites attract Opposites attract is the very premise behind colour blocking, which involves pairing opposites on the colour wheel together to make complementary combinations. When it comes to your wardrobe, this means an orange sweater and navy cigarette pants. You don’t need to be loud and proud, colour blocking can work equally as well with pastel shades. Top or toe Rather than going bold from top to toe, why not try top or toe? Choosing one element of colour for your outfit creates a strong focal point and the rest of the pieces nicely complement the look. Keep the rest of your clothing and accessories neutral, think a hot pink top with black pants.

C.

One colour wonder Choose a colour and tone which suits you and go all out! Keep your accessories neutral in either black, white or beige tones to balance out the look. The key to wearing one colour well is to either match everything together with precision or mix and match noticeably different within of a colour family.

Anything Boring

but

This coming spring and summer, if your clothes are a bit rad, you’re instantly in fashion. Think out-there shapes and cool mix-ups of items worn together. For instance, who said that scruffy and loose frayed jeans shouldn’t be donned with a gorgeous tailored-waist, satin jacket? By Liesl Johnstone

H

erein lies the glory of getting dressed. Designers are trying to shake us free of our introversion or apathy. For the timid, out-there looks still beckon. It could be just wearing a tactile texture or incorporating a mad ruffle effect to an ensemble. As with comedy, it’s the unexpected gag which makes everything work. This means that the less you try to put things together properly, the better! It’s all about interesting shapes, colours and patterns. And if you want your look simple, there’s nothing wrong with one long dress in an interesting shape. Have a look at Paris Fashion Week for Spring-Summer of 2018 for inspiration. It seems the key is to possess one or two items that fit beautifully. Such as the paradoxical fitted cropped top paired with a capacious shaggy number. Ok, for those photographed in most city street-style shots, looking good might be a business. But even for the rest of us, life should be vibrant. Visiting op-shops for radical pieces is a fabulous, sustainable way of walking on the wild side. Or maybe just the verge.

Doctor House? Is there a in the

The field of cosmetic medicine is rapidly expanding in New Zealand as the demand grows for safe, effective and affordable cosmetic procedures. In general, techniques are becoming more complex, requiring an increasing level of both skill and artistry by the practitioner.

Metropol July 19, 2018 29

B

efore embarking on any cosmetic medicine procedure, make sure you are in safe and competent hands. An easy way to check this is by asking whether the doctor is a member of the NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine. You can then be assured of their specific training and qualifications in this field and the ongoing assessment of both their professional development and also the safety and standards of clinic premises. If your practitioner is a nurse, it is important to know who is providing their medical oversight; a requirement for all nurses administering medicines such as BotoxÂŽ and DysportÂŽ. Ideally the doctor qualified in this field will be present in the clinic. Follow up in the days and weeks after any treatment is always important, so make sure you will have access to a medical practitioner in the event of a complication or adverse outcome. This is especially important if you are having treatment with dermal fillers. Remember, its all about making sure you are in skilled hands and in a safe environment. Look out for the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine logo to identify members, or visit nzscm. co.nz. While smaller pieces can be left for Maudes on Trade Me at any of Nurse Maude’s seven hospice shops, it is sometimes possible for larger or bulk items to be picked up. “Just give us a call on 03-375 4643 or email us at trademe.volunteers@nursemaude.org.nz if you have large items and we can let you know where in Merivale to drop them off or whether we’re able to pick them up,” Sue says. “Unfortunately we can’t take beds, mattresses or televisions, but we can take almost everything else in good, saleable condition. “Maudes on Trade Me helps make it possible for patients and their families to receive care and support free of charge at the Nurse Maude Hospice, so they can focus on what matters most rather than having to worry about how they’re going to pay for that care.”

F

or those among us whose pelvic floor functions normally, it seems irrelevant among the distractions of daily life. But to those of us whose pelvic floor is failing us (and we are many!) it can change our pattern and quality of life every day. So, what is the pelvic floor? A great way to describe it is a funnel of muscles and tendons, attached by its brim to the inside of the pelvic bones. The anus is the spout of the funnel, and the urethra and the vagina open through the front wall. The pelvic floor is really a complex arrangement of muscles and tendons with a very rich nerve supply and a clever co-ordination system that allows it to respond appropriately to everything from sneezing or coughing to pooing and peeing. The pelvic floor has a very important job holding in the bowel and the pelvic organs and letting out (under control) other things like urine and faeces. When the pelvic floor doesn’t work properly one of two things happen: either things fall out that shouldn’t, or things that should come out don’t…. or both! Childbirth is by far the most common thing to cause damage to the pelvic floor. For the baby to pass through the vagina, the front of the pelvic floor must open widely. This process stretches the nerves of the pelvic floor muscles (including the anal sphincter and the bladder sphincter) so that the muscles are weaker. Forceps

delivery and prolonged labour with a large baby increase the likelihood of damage. The nerves recover to a greater or lesser extent in the months after childbirth, but they may never recover completely, leading to varying degrees of difficulty with bladder and/or bowel control. It is very common for the tendon, which holds the left and right halves of the pelvic floor muscles together between the vagina and the rectum, to become stretched or torn. This allows the rectum to fall through the pelvic floor where it causes bulging into the back wall of the vagina (rectocele). This creates a pocket which sometimes traps faeces and causes difficulty emptying the rectum. Some people find they have to support their bottom to help it empty. A specialist pelvic floor physiotherapist can help with management of a rectocele, but if difficulty emptying the bowel becomes an ongoing problem, a specialist colorectal surgeon can repair the pelvic floor and greatly improve your bowel function. Intus colorectal surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and management of defaecation and pelvic floor disorders and generally work in a multidisciplinary team with physiotherapists, urologists and gynaecologists to ensure that the best expertise is applied to every individual’s situation. For more information, contact Intus on 03-977 5977 or visit www.intus.co.nz.

Enduring Powers of Attorney As we age, we must eventually turn our minds to what happens if because of accident, illness or just plain old age, we can no longer manage our own affairs.

E

nter the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act 1988, which allows us to appoint people we trust to manage our affairs under documents known as Enduring Powers of Attorney. These documents come in two forms, one for personal care and welfare; a second for property matters. In relation to personal care and welfare, you can only appoint one person at any given time, while in relation to property matters, you can appoint one or more attorneys and can specify whether they can only act jointly, or jointly and severally, meaning any one of them can act as your attorney on his or her own. An Enduring Power of Attorney in relation to property can be created to also act as a general power of attorney which can be used by your attorney(s) while you have mental capacity. Alternatively, you can choose to set up the Enduring Power of Attorney for property so it only comes into effect if you lose mental capacity. However, an Enduring Power of Attorney in relation to personal care and welfare can only be activated if you have lost mental capacity. You are presumed to be competent unless an assessment by a registered medical practitioner shows otherwise. Significant changes were made with the

passing of the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Amendment Act 2007 and, in 2016, new standardised forms were introduced. The 2007 changes included: • The ability to appoint a successor attorney, in the event the original attorney is unwilling or unable to act • The capacity to authorise your attorney to act on certain specified matters or all matters • The ability to require your attorney to consult with or provide information to specified persons • The power to authorise your attorney to ask the court to make or amend your will. If you wish to change your appointed attorney while you have mental capacity, you can revoke the attorney’s appointment at any time. If however, you have lost mental capacity and family or friends are concerned about an attorney’s actions, the only redress is through the courts. Similarly, if you lose mental capacity and do not have Enduring Powers of Attorney in place, an application may be made to the Family Court for someone to be appointed as your welfare guardian and/or your property manager. This is more expensive, both in time and cost. Adding insult to

injury, the process must be repeated after the first three years and every two years thereafter. It is much cheaper to put Enduring Powers of Attorney in place of your own choice while you still have the capacity. Retirement villages insist on all residents having valid Enduring Powers of Attorney, so if you are contemplating this type of community, it is essential your Enduring Powers of Attorney are in place, up to date and meet your needs. Enduring Powers of Attorney are one of the most important and valuable estate planning tools available that everyone should have in place, regardless of age, so in the event of an unforeseen loss of capacity, your affairs can be managed by someone you trust. Kannangara Thomson has a specialist senior law team. Contact Brent Selwyn on 03-377 4421 to discuss putting Enduring Powers of Attorney in place.

Coco Gifts has worked with Metropol since opening over five years ago. It is an iconic Christchurch brand which as a business for me is a perfect partnership. It is one of two publications I support, as it works well with my brand and demographic, and it’s great having a stand at the shop for my customers to collect a magazine. I enjoy being able to work across social media with Metropol on Facebook and Instagram.

Working with the Metropol team has been a pleasure over the last four years. The staff are always helpful and accommodating with the planning and designing of advertisements. The magazine is always fresh and interesting, with a broad range of articles and features ensuring a good read for a greater audience, so from our perspective, Metropol has helped grow Ataahua Wine’s brand awareness in all the right places.

Grassam Real Estate would like to congratulate Metropol on their 20th anniversary. Juline and Pauline were foundation clients when the magazine was first launched and we have been a loyal client ever since. Having been involved in the real estate industry for 22 years, we have been proud to promote our business with Metropol. We have always found it to be a stylish magazine with interesting articles and hits our target market. On behalf of our company, we wish Metropol all the best for the future.

Winter’s

Must-Attend

This year’s Clicquot in the Snow in Queenstown from 2-5 August marks the 200th year since Madame Clicquot blended the world’s first rosé champagne and, to honour the special anniversary, long-time friend of the brand, designer Kathryn Wilson has designed a special edition rosé pink belt.

T

o the delight of many Kathryn Wilson fans, the special edition rosé belt is reintroducing her much loved belts to her coveted designs. The talented shoe and accessories designer is releasing the celebratory belt as part of her spring/summer 18 collection which is set to be debuted at Clicquot in the Snow this year. An annual highlight for festival guests, this is her 7th year showing at Clicquot in the Snow. Kathryn Wilson will also be releasing her spring/summer 18 collection at her annual runway show presented by Veuve Clicquot. This year is particularly special as she celebrates the brand’s 15-year anniversary.

This year will also see another magnificent presentation at Rata with celebrity chef Josh Emett to bring back the Clicquot Long Lunch series at Rata Restaurant; a four-course degustation lunch inspired by Clicquot Colourama and the Veuve Clicquot range including NV, Vintage and Rosé. The weekend’s highlight will be the magnificent and much anticipated Clicquot Gala. This time with an exciting new Colourama theme. Bringing a touch of glamour to close the four-day celebration, the Clicquot Colourama Gala at QT Queenstown will be the ultimate place to be in Queenstown on 4 July.

Guests will be treated to an exclusive performance by Anna Coddington and Dick Johnson of DJ – Vocalist duo, Clicks, and multiple iconic Clicquot moments. Tickets are $99 per person and include entry to the Clicquot Colourama Gala, canapes and one flute upon arrival with cash bar available for the rest of the event. It’s colourful and luxurious, it’s fashionable and it’s refined. Clicquot in the Snow is fast becoming the event to attend on the Queenstown social calendar. Going Viking! By Keiran Bleach

In ancient times, those who went off raiding and plundering in ships were said to be ‘going Viking’. These days such behaviour is frowned upon, but Southern Lakes residents can at least dust off their furs and party like they’ve made it to Valhalla (Viking heaven).

A

n innovative charity fundraiser, The Viking Ball is being held next month to raise money for Upper Clutha Hospice Trust. Wanaka event manager Samantha Stout feels strongly about giving back to her community and has teamed up with Pete and Claire Marshall – owners of high-end venue Corbridge Woolshed – to plan the evening. “It will be a totally immersive experience,

with highly theatrical elements,” Samantha says. “Prepare to be surprised.” Entertainment includes live music, a fire dancer and actors dressed as Vikings. Without giving too much else away, Samantha reveals that a traditional Viking burial ritual will be re-enacted using the small lake at the venue. And what to wear to an event that is heavily themed around the seafaring warriors of the late 8th to 11th centuries?

Think natural fibres: leather, wool and fur. Samantha suggests people could further support the cause by finding an outfit at the Upper Clutha Hospice Shop in Wanaka. The Viking Ball is on Saturday 4 August at Corbridge Woolshed, 707 WanakaLuggate Highway. Tickets cost $160 per person (10 percent discount available for groups of 10 or more). Exceptional Efficiency

T

Central Otago and the Southern Lakes region are known for their extremes of climate – scorching hot days of more than 30 degrees in the summer and plummeting well below zero in the winter. Such fluctuations call for building materials that perform at the highest level of efficiency, especially with respect to thermal insulation, noise reduction and security.

he largest holes in your house are your windows and doors. Designing window and door frames to prevent heat escaping has reached the highest standard with the use of unplasticised polyvinyl chloride or UPVC. This material, when used in conjunction with low emissivity double glazing, achieves an R-value of 0.8 for insulating effectiveness and thermal performance. To interpret the jargon, that is a very high rating and will help you enjoy a perfectly comfortable atmosphere in your home while lowering power bills. It’s the ideal product for the southern environment. UPVC Windows and Doors Ltd of Dunedin manufacture and install these UPVC products using the Deceuninck Zendow profile, the world’s largest manufacturer of UPVC window and door systems. The frames come in a range of seven colours and have a 15-year guarantee. Once installed on a house, the frames look similar to the beauty of timber frames but, unlike timber, they are virtually maintenance free. They have other benefits too. They offer high security locking features, as well as high sound insulation and maximum water tightness for areas prone to driving rain and snow. For more information about UPVC frames, phone UPVC Windows and Door Ltd 0800 455 501.

rrow International’s team worked in blazing heat and falling snow to get iFLY, Queenstown’s sensational new attraction off the ground this winter. Arrow was involved in the design phase of the $15 million project, giving buildability and programming input before being awarded the main build contract. The skydiving facility involves an 8m deep basement and wind turbines that sit on top of the building. The turbines blow air around the building, into the basement, and then project it up through the centre of the building to create a ‘flight chamber’. People float on a column of air rising up to 5m above the ground. The Queenstown building design, drawn up by local Walker Group Architects, is the first of its kind for New Zealand. This iconic build is a joint project between Sky Venture International, which manufactures iFLY vertical wind tunnels and Kiwi residents Emma and Gary Beyer. Emma Beyer was on the British skydiving team winning the 2006 world champs, while her husband Gary is a former world champion and 18-time US champion. Emma comments that “we originally

approached iFLY in 2011 with a view to launching an indoor skydiving facility in New Zealand. Before tendering for construction even started, a huge amount of work went into finding and researching the right location. The consenting process was especially time-consuming and challenging due to the central Queenstown location, and the appearance

Now anyone can fly like Superman of the building needed to fit well with the surrounding architecture and alpine backdrop. It’s unique as it is unlike any of the other 67 iFLY sites around the world.” Nick Hamlin, Arrow’s Southern General Manager says, “The site is wedged between two existing buildings making construction activities incredibly difficult. The site is very tight and steep and on one of the busiest streets in Queenstown

PLANNING

for foot traffic, which leads up to the gondola. A major tower crane was used on site to construct the super structure and install all the 12 tonne wind turbines. “The basement area is approximately 8m in the ground, with the top of the building lifting up to 14m – making it a massive concrete structure that had to be systemic designed for the alpine location.” The 450mm-thick basement walls required specialised pouring systems brought in from Christchurch and a special free-flowing concrete to pour the massive walls. Highly technical, the wind tunnel and most of the technology for the project have come from Texas. Construction Project Manager Bruce Halligan, Project/Senior Site Manager Brian Macmillan, Quantity Surveyor Gerry Lyons and Project Administrator Kirsty Tamatea were supported by an enthusiastic team of subcontractors. “It’s been a tough but very rewarding build, with a lot of very technical details and low build tolerances that add to the challenge – we all can’t wait for the opportunity to try out the tunnel itself.” www.iflynz.co.nz www.arrowinternational.co.nz

Headed by Emma Mettrick and Welshman Paul Howells, 27 Steps is one of the hottest new kids on the culinary block. Metropol talks to these formidable foodies about stepping up and their recipe for success.

27 Steps has stepped up as one of the hottest dining destinations

banter and the industrial language. Having a smaller restaurant before taking on 27 was particularly important for me – I really did learn a hell of a lot in the five years we had it however, for me personally, I think from a food sense we had taken it as far as it could go. It was time for a fresh challenge How would you define Twenty Seven Steps? Emma: We wanted to create a classic restaurant that needs no explanations nor has any pretensions. We have been magpies grabbing what we thought worked at previous jobs and melting them all together into a place where we would like to eat. Paul: Honest, classic, natural, simple. You’ve become one of the city’s hottest dining establishments, what has been your recipe for success? Emma: That’s a very generous statement! We have just done what we know and done it with integrity. That and a lot of elbow grease and luck. It helps that between us we have both sides of the restaurant covered, are hands on and are blessed to be surrounded by likeminded people helping us do what we do. And, of course, that people chose to spend their money and come and dine with us – without that we have nothing. Paul: The most important part for me is that you have to be totally consistent in everything you do. What attracted you to the hospitality industry? Emma: There was something about hospitality that I always thought was cool. You worked hard and played hard. You can work anywhere and the people are great – most of my closest friends I have met through this industry. There is something that gets under your skin. After 22 years I genuinely still get a kick when our diners leave happy at the end of the night or by introducing a customer or staff member to a different wine that they really like, made by someone cool. There’s a bunch of fab people in this game whether it is those creating/growing what you sell, manning the grill or those on the floor beside you. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? Emma: Who knows?! If it’s more of what we are doing currently, I am happy. Paul’s been talking about a cookbook for years so you never know…

Can you tell us about your culinary journey and how Twenty Seven Steps began? Emma: I remember my parents bribing me that if I learnt to eat with my knife and fork I could have a meal at a restaurant. I remember loving the whole experience. My first job was at the Astrolabe in Akaroa working for Tui Joblin, a fantastic woman whose daughter Madi now works for us. Chicken, cranberry and brie was revolutionary and the aim was to get the highest, frothiest cappuccino. For me, food has always been intertwined with people and experiences and realising that everything we know is fluid and constantly evolving – nothing is a given and rules change. Anne Edmond and Annie’s Wine Bar showed me NZ wines, put me through art school and sent me travelling. In London, working for Lisa and Agnes at the Jazz Café meant seeing amazing musical acts whilst being paid and a restaurant attached to a fringe theatre in South London introduced me to a whole other world. Finally, Aiobheann MacNamara at Ard Bia in Galway, Ireland (where Paul and I met) showed me the worth of celebrating and having pride in what is in your local environment. We originally set up an Akaroa restaurant naively thinking we could live six months there and six months back in the UK however, Finn coming along changed that. Post quakes, I got very nostalgic about Christchurch. After falling in love with our space, we sold up in Akaroa, went to battle with bureaucracy and got the doors open. Paul: I was always destined to work in the food industry in some way, shape or form. My elder brother was in catering college when I was 6/7, so his cook books and chefs whites were always strewn across the bedroom we shared. My mother was, and still is, a tremendous cook. Her ham hock soups, corned beef and tomato pie, Manchester tarts and homemade breads were amazing. For me the journey started at home. It’s testament to her that both her sons would go on to be chefs and restaurant owners. Her pumpkin, feta and rosemary bread she taught me to make when I was eight is the house bread at 27. Inevitably my brother got me my first job in a kitchen. I’d spend my summer holidays topping and tailing countless boxes of green beans, shucking oysters and de-podding mountains of fresh peas. I loved the cut and thrust of kitchen life; the mickey taking, the

A cultural coffee With the Christchurch rebuild well under way, it’s fantastic to see Christchurch moving ahead in leaps and bounds. Nowhere is this change more evident than in the thriving café industry.

All the flavours & atmosphere of a culinary revival with a theme of modern sophistication

lack and White Coffee Cartel has been leading the charge since 2015 with a vibrant place to grab a coffee from a crew of people who are focused on making your experience exceptional. With 400 years of coffee in western society, expectations of coffee and the house in which it is brewed and drunk have grown substantially. Christchurch is a daytime city, with a visit to the local café a daily ritual for many thousands of Cantabrians. It’s become part of our lives; ingrained in our culture. Black and White Coffee Cartel is well-placed – with eight in total, amongst the thriving new city being built around us. Bink Bowler says, “When we started in Victoria Street in 2015, you had a clear view of the Port Hills, now it’s a hive of building activity”. With the plethora of café options, it’s a clear indication that Christchurch is on the right track. Nothing builds harmony amongst a people more than its social gathering points. With coffee consumption in Christchurch giving Auckland a run for its money, we’re all wide awake for a beckoning future of success and growth after an event that has affected us all. I for one love the great taste of coffee to accent a wonderful day in the garden city. Don’t you?

Café Kiwi Kick Personality radiates throughout LeBakermen Café and Bakery – the unique and delicious food, the staff and a coffee experience to rival them all.

W

ill Leung is a connoisseur of coffee and artisan food. After a spell in Japan, mastering the country’s French way of baking, he finally opened his café in March. Will describes his baking as “Using French techniques for Japanese-style delicacies – but with a Kiwi kick”. The famous Fairlie Bakehouse pies add to the cabinets – filled with tempting homemade bread and pastry aromas. With an in-house dessert specialist, the cabinets are filled with everything from Salted Miso Caramel cakes to buttery fluffy brioches. Using Havana Coffee Works espresso from Wellington is one of the many ways to have a coffee here. The café specialises in soft brew methods such as pour-over drip, Siphon, French Press and Cold Brew. Will comes to the table

to explain the process. “You can try a single origin earthy Mexican, wellbalanced Cuban, a strong and nutty Brazilian or a sweet and fruity Ethiopian – it’s the coffee version of wine tasting!” Head coffee maker, Vii, was a former Ara Barista tutor. The café also offers keep cups and coffee equipment for sale. The menu includes the likes of fluffy waffles for breakfast and The Loco Moco for lunch. “This is my absolute favourite,” Will says of this Hawaiian comfort dish. Easily accessible, the modern, comfortable, new premises at 187 Wigram Road, Wigram has oodles of parking and seating. Open every day 6:30am to 4:30pm weekdays and 8am to 3:30pm weekends. F

eeling like I was having lunch at a gentlemen’s hacienda in Mexico, I savoured the ceviche – raw fish in lime juice – which is a must-try – and the polenta fries and jalapeño and queso croquetas; rich croquets with just enough kick. It’s a definite must-see if you’re in the area or looking for an excuse to drive to North Canterbury. Using the finest of local produce and wine – and we all know the area is a cornucopia of epicurean delights – the menu by head chef Merv is bristling with things worth trying. Doc Sanchez, owner and Latin guitar aficionado says, “We want people to walk in and have great service,

fantastic food and enjoy a wonderful environment”. Well he doesn’t get that wrong, with cocktails served by bar manager Olivia, a Californian fluent in Spanish, to Toots and Woody, the rainbow lorikeets in the expansive garden area and live music on a Friday and Sunday. Open from 11am until late, Casa De Sanchez is my pick for a great dining and entertainment experience. PS, you can drop in for huevos rancheros, a scrambled egg burrito and other wonderful breakfast options to take away from the food van parked out front from 7am-10.30am every day! Dark Details

They say everything in moderation, right? Well that’s certainly an apt expression when it comes to the home. After all, while we’re all for dipping your toes in the colour pool when it comes to decorating, we’re equally invested in dark details.

A

fter singing the sartorial praises of black as a wardrobe staple over on pages 3435, we’re now here to say black and all its deep and moody relatives are anything but boring when incorporated in the home.

While we’re all for dipping your toes in the colour pool, we’re equally invested in dark details In fact, charcoal and black furnishings are quickly gaining popularity, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom, where splashes of deeper shades add drama and intrigue, rather than overwhelm and overpower. Don’t forget, they make a particularly powerful partnership with metallic accents of brass or copper.

Out of the O Ordinary Orange Homes does not build ordinary homes. Style, substance and quality are the company’s by-words. That is exactly what potential clients will see when they visit its newest showhomes.

pening 21 July in Prestons Park is a striking home clad with the new White Euro Brick from Midland Brick, featuring cedar detailing. “The house is a new design,” Orange Homes Managing Director Aaron Morrison says. “Our sales team have collaborated to include a range of innovative design aspects. These demonstrate not only how our house plans can be customised, but also the nature and quality of detail and workmanship invested in each of our builds.” The house is pavilion-style, with three bedrooms, open plan dining, kitchen and family living, with separate lounge. Of particular note is the use of scissor trusses in the living areas to create ceiling elevation and the sense of augmented space. Custom

built-in joinery, a walk-in pantry and a useful window seat in the living area demonstrate what is possible while remaining cost effective. With Rolleston now well-established and still growing, Orange Homes has recently opened a four-bedroom display home there, which will be the company’s base in the town. “It’s very central, right by the shopping centre and convenient for people to drop in to learn more about what we offer. It is a nicely designed house featuring the currently popular materials – plaster, schist and cedar; great family living and really appropriate for the area.” Find Orange Homes at 245 Annex Road, phone 03-343 3955 or visit www.orangehomes.co.nz.

EXCEPTIONAL SPACES O’Neil Architecture has been admired for its sophisticated enduring designs, spatial fluency, and the ability to make ordinary objects and materials desirable. The company is working on new homes throughout the country, as well as a few exciting projects right here in Christchurch.

W

e recently sat down with Director Darren O’Neil and Senior Designer David Rea to talk about team O’Neil and their exciting upcoming projects. “We have several exceptional homes that we have been working on recently that we’re incredibly excited about. They’re sculptural, balanced, suited to their environments and will look spectacular when finished,” Darren says. “In-fact, all parties involved have really gone the extra mile and the level of finish and attention to detail is outstanding. Which yet again reiterates the importance of having the right team of experienced professionals involved in your project, it profoundly affects the execution of the build and client satisfaction,” David adds. Team O’Neil recently attended a celebratory party its clients threw in their underground garage, AKA their ‘Batcave’, to thank all involved to date. “It was incredibly humbling and such a pleasure to hear how they have honestly loved the entire journey and are almost sad for it to end. That’s what it’s all about really, isn’t it!” Darren says.

Artistic Tutelage Three years ago, Paul Hobbs was looking for an art class that would help improve his painting. He spied an advert for Art Metro and immediately emailed owner and Director Simon Walmisley; within a short time, Paul found himself enrolled in a class and perched before an easel.

aul currently attends the Tuesday morning class. His preferred medium is oils. “I’m learning all sorts of techniques using oils – anything goes, really!” Paul says his confidence in his painting has grown enormously since he began. “I’m tackling things like snow and clouds now. I’m learning about the tools, like using a palette knife, and I’ve learnt about layering.” He likes to take a few minutes’ break from his easel to have a wander around and see what his classmates are up to. “I’ve been humbled by seeing the brilliance of some of the others – but that’s all good.” Paul says he enjoys his classes because the atmosphere is easy going and sociable. “Simon’s also very flexible with times; if you can’t make a class for some reason or other, you can always catch up next time. The teaching is relaxed but really helpful. If you want a bit of guidance, your tutor’s soon by your side.” When asked if he will stay on at Art Metro, Paul gives an emphatic, enthusiastic response. “Oh yes, definitely. I have learnt such a lot and hopefully I’ve improved!” For more information visit www.artmetro.co.nz, email learn@ artmetro.co.nz or phone 03-354 4438.

Level non-pooling walkways and courtyards are a landscaper’s forte

backyard

Winters By Tracey Edwardes

Winter in the backyard can either be an inviting wonderland, or a dreary scene to close the curtain to. Why is it that some gardens have that straight-out-of-a-magazine look? It’s very likely it was the professionals’ doing. They ultimately save homeowners time and upkeep, by adding a lifestyle dimension to brighten the darkest day.

Crisp but sunny Cantabrian winter days are perfect for topping up on vitamin D, but not so inviting when traversing slimy pathways of slippery rotted leaves! Safe, level, non-pooling walkways and courtyard areas are a landscaper’s forte. Adding a sturdy outside wall – and perhaps a gas fire and adjustable canopy – and it’s literally another room, without the expense of an extension. Dappled light through bare branches is enchanting, but may uncover a need for privacy, such as fencing solutions or a gardener’s advice on planting evergreens. It’s imperative to plant to the conditions and an experienced hand saves on wasted trial and error. It’s generally easier to enlist the pick of the professionals in winter too. They’re usually less busy. Options are excitingly endless. Install a glasshouse for winter vegetables, a pagoda, a pergola, or a summer house – which is also really a cosy winter house for mulled-wine gettogethers.

CENTRAL COMMUNITY Can the quiet cul-de-sac exist in the central city? Architect Craig South believes it can, as he explores what we might be missing in our central city neighbourhood.

W

hile it is exciting to see energy and life back in central Christchurch on a larger scale,

There is a common misconception that living in the centre of a city, especially residing in an apartment complex, means you forgo the sense of community found in a quiet cul-de-sac. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. And, with a little planning and focus, our central city can become a united, diverse community, equaling even the most tight-knit neighbourhoods.

with public parks, fruit trees, market stalls and vegetable gardens servicing the wider community in abundance, I can’t help but

feel we could be doing more to bring a small-scale neighbourhood quality to city developments. Unfortunately, it seems it

has become the norm to simply squeeze a suburban housing typology onto a small city site, rather than considering how the occupants could interact with one another. Preferably, we want to prevent a situation where ‘resident A’ drives straight into their internal-access garage, closes the door and has little contact with those living around them. The importance of getting to know your neighbours seems to have diminished in recent years and I think it is vital we make this a priority again. In many of the apartment developments Cymon Allfrey Architects have designed, we have purposely built community spaces, ensuring engagement between neighbours. Communal areas are crossed on the way to front doors, with occupants hopefully bumping into and getting to know each other in the process. This not only cultivates a strong sense of belonging within the development, but also adds an extra layer of security for the occupants; knowing neighbours are looking out for them and their home. Instead of every apartment within a complex having a tiny piece of private outdoor living area, why not combine all those individual areas into one large communal space; space that can be utilised by individuals when entertaining their friends and also by the whole community when socialising together. Let us once again connect and engage with our neighbours, learn from each other and

Let us once again connect and engage with our neighbours broaden our horizons. We have much to learn from the flourishing harbour town of Lyttleton. Developing and maintaining a sense of community appears to be high on its priority list and it’s doing it well. Like Christchurch, the town of Lyttleton often holds large-scale events such as the recent Festival of Lights, welcoming not only its own community but people from all over the region. While these events are great for the town, Lyttleton seems to take care

of its people and fosters opportunities for the smaller community to thrive. Can we bring this level of engagement back to the scale of the quiet cul-de-sac and help reconnect neighbours within singular complexes in the city? Living in Central Christchurch doesn’t have to be isolated and detached, with some attention and a subtle mind shift, it too can become a bustling, communityfocused neighbourhood. www.caarc.co.nz

Southern Success

The Master Painters New Zealand Association and its members have been painting the South Island red – both in the literal and metaphorical sense of the expression, with South Island businesses achieving notable success in the recently completed New Zealand Master Painter of the Year Awards in Queenstown.

A BAR FIT-OUT IN THE TIMARU CBD WON GRANT JENKINS CONTRACTING LIMITED THE NEW ZEALAND MASTER PAINTER OF THE YEAR AWARD

W

hile members from Christchurch, Nelson and Timaru dominated the Gold and Category wins in the annual competition, South Island companies also won all the top prizes as well. Timaru based firm Grant Jenkins Contracting Limited took out a number of category and overall wins including

Wallcoverings Applicator of the Year, Commercial Master Painter of the Year and the top award of New Zealand Master Painter of the Year. An astounding success, the business is only the second member to be awarded the top title twice. The winning entry was an example of the highest quality for the competition, with a bar fit-out in the Timaru CBD. The judges noted that this project truly reflected

outstanding skill, with a combination of creative decorative effects, highquality painting work and outstanding wallcoverings applications. Other Timaru contractors that achieved success were Jeff Allan Paint & Paper and Rangers Specialised Coatings Ltd. Nelson firm Total Decorating Nelson took out the other major prize, earning the Residential Master Painter of the Year. This team presented a number of high quality projects, with a quality new character home in Richmond securing the winning entry for the firm. Once again, this team presented a complete skill set that included high quality painting and wallcoverings application. Competition and standards in the Nelson/Marlborough region mean that clients of Colourbox Ltd, Dave Rees Painting, Procolour Painting, McKenzies also were recipients of award winning projects. Christchurch firms, Ian Sheppard Ltd, Chamlang Ltd, Hawke Paint, Mitchell Decorating, Switched On Property Maintenance, Selwyn Decorating and GK Fyfe Ltd, all earned recognition for work carried out during the previous year. Further south wasn’t neglected either, with Mulford Holdings, Southern Lakes Architectural Coatings, Hilo Decorating, Olphert Contracting and K I McDowall Ltd all achieving success. The judges observed that the quality of work presented by these businesses was a reflection of true professional standards, great attention to details and strong client relationships. They described it as an honour to view the projects presented throughout New Zealand and witness the passion these members have for their chosen trade. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then consider the retro aesthetic to be positively blushing. Because, from crushed velvet and psychedelic florals, to pretty pastels and paisley prints, we’re seeing a strong rise in the popularity of a 20th century aesthetic that combines the old with the new and it’s not hard to see why.

A

lthough the retro look is marked by the bold designs of the 70s and 80s, with strong colours, patterns and textures dominating this stylish revolution, there is no putting the retro vibe in a box. Because, rather than referencing a quite specific timeframe, retro style seeks to refer to modern things that display characteristics of the past and, with this typically encompassing the somewhat broad 1940-1990 epoch, retro accents in their diverse glory have been making their way into the hearts and homes of trendsetters everywhere. While there’s certainly an appetite for the bolder designs of the seventies and eighties era, currently there is an even great affection being shown for mid20th century modern furniture that hails from the 1930s-1960s. Whether you adopt a little or a lot, this interior aesthetic is big, bold and a little bit in your face, in the best possible way.

HIGHWAY DANGER ZONE! TO THE

By Nicholas Henare

I can’t express the exhilaration of drifting a BMW M2 at the Southern proving grounds in the Crowne Range, marking the lead up to one of the quintessential driving days of my lifetime.

T

he invitation to BMW’s Alpine xDrive experience had arrived about a month before the event. The invitation comprises two nights’ accommodation at the stunning Millbrook Resort, including airport transfers and a helicopter ride to the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds, that features some of the world’s most advanced winter testing facilities. There was an amazing range of BMW vehicles, including the BMW X Range and M series and you get the full BMW driving experience on the snow and ice, being taught key driving techniques by

qualified professional BMW driver trainers and much, much, more. At the incredible Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown, the bed was wider than I was tall. All amenities are available for you to use and you truly get spoilt. The first day involved discussions on how the day would proceed and prepping for the event. When dawn broke we were flying over the Crowne range, the sun glistening off the fresh powder snow. I had Kenny Loggins’ ‘Danger Zone’ rattling around in my head and couldn’t quite believe what was happening. When we landed, we were met by top

driving instructor Mike Eddy. A great guy and very well known in the industry, he has a plethora of knowledge, not only on racing, but also on teaching someone how to drive well. Our modules consisted of drifting, slalom and drag racing, all on the fresh powder snow. We broke up and were handed a comprehensive range of the new BMW X and M series vehicles to drive. We would change over vehicles at random intervals, allowing us the opportunity to experience the intricacies of each model. What surprised me is how much variance there was. honour I will cherish for the rest of my life. I lost count of the spin I got up to on the track, but when I stopped, I found myself laughing hysterically like a man possessed. At the end of the day you’re wishing you could do it all again, knowing that tomorrow it was someone else’s turn to have the drive of their life. The xDrive on the new BMWs is quite an experience. When you start up on a hill, it allows you to move your foot from brake to accelerator, while keeping the brake engaged for a few seconds. Heading downhill, you can push the descent button, which can be pre-set to allow the car to drive downhill while you do nothing but steer. The xDrive provides variable torque split between the front and rear axles through the use of a multi-plate wet clutch located in the gearbox on the output to the front drive shaft. What this means is that the power is distributed between all four wheels automatically. So, if one wheel isn’t gripping on ice, the power is sent to the other wheels and you have constant traction moving forward in the most hazardous of scenarios. Relaxing back in the spa to ease my aching bones, I reflected on how truly incredible the BMW Alpine xDrive was and how lucky I had been to have taken part. For the learning experience alone, it was a stunner. For the adrenalin kick, it just can’t be beaten. BMW, I love you.

found myself drag racing against New Zealand journalist and television personality Carly Flynn. We left the start gate and I sailed past her 640i xDrive in my black 5 series 540i. Well I thought I was the bee’s knees… ‘till we changed cars. And there’s the rub. Her hysterical laughing as she waved goodbye, taking with her my dream of race car glory, had me plotting my revenge. One of the great things about the day was how it ran so smoothly. Everything had been planned down to the most minute detail. As a driver you wanted for nothing and all the tutors were not only accommodating with knowledge but had great skill in dealing with drivers of different abilities. There was a whole lot of love between drivers by the end of the day. Drifting had me in a metallic M2 turning off the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and just using my rear wheels to fang it round an ice track as fast as my foot could take me. You are taught how to counter-steer and accelerate to make the best of the situation – pure adrenalin fun! Slalom has you in an X2 using the knowledge you have gained throughout the day to run through a course of orange road cones. I excelled at this, likely because of my experience navigating Christchurch’s postquake roading system in winter. Taking away the gold trophy in the end of day finale is an

Jaguar E Pace

F

T

ollowing the flagship XC90 and mid -range XC60, the all-new smaller XC40 carries Volvo’s fluidic design philosophy to great effect. Styling cues like the LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer-like detailing and reverse L-shaped rear light cluster are totally unique and its square-jawed stance definitely looks the business. The range is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with 140kW/300Nm, though the range topping T5’s power is boosted to 180kW/350Nm. The XC40 T5 R-Design featured here comes with 20-inch alloy wheels, a unique R-Design grille, LED headlights, sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, leather and nubuck upholstery, R-Design treatment on steering wheel, pedals and gear selector as well as heated front seats, Harman Kardon premium sound system and a nine-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital radio and navigation. Select Dynamic mode and everything tightens up, which means you have greater throttle response and shaper turn in. Many cars have a ‘sport’ mode feature of some sort, but with the XC40, it completely transforms the driving experience. In fact, it feels more like a hot hatchback than small SUV, quite an accomplishment in itself. The only trade-off is, thanks to the R-Design package, the ride is not as smooth as it ought to be.

he Jaguar E-Pace is the baby SUV of Jaguar’s pride, shown brilliantly by the Jaguar cub door mirror courtesy light at night. Its bigger and extremely capable F-Pace sibling has been selling like hotcakes and the new E-Pace could easily repeat this trend on looks alone. The planted stance and mesh front grille are iconic Jaguar and the rear three quarter mirrors its larger F-Pace counterpart; you would seldom find a betterlooking car in this segment. Choose from a range of ‘Ingenium’ 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engines, with two petrol and two diesels available. Inside, Jaguar design attributes have been carried over to great effect. The layout is simple and intuitive, though the use of hard plastics is a tad disappointing. Standard features include Lane Keep Assist, 10-way electric seats, Sat Nav and Bluetooth connectivity, of course. To drive the E-Pace is very much what you would expect from a Jaguar; comfortable, smooth and intuitive. Steering lacks in feel but still manages to be direct and responsive. Despite the sublime ride, the E-Pace does get a bit roly poly in the bends and feels heavy despite the size. The nine-speed automatic complements the power train well, offering crisp changes from gear to gear, and power delivery as a whole is refined and silky smooth.

Verdict

I

n summary, if you choose the Jaguar E-Pace over the Volvo XC40 – bravo. It rides better and is even slightly better looking, but the Volvo would be my pick thanks to marginally better dynamics and a more involved drive. They are marginal differences though, so whichever you pick, you won’t be disappointed.

It was in 1998 that Mercedes-Benz New Zealand first offered a new vehicle that helped to redefine the brand and significantly grow its appeal. The M-Class (now known as the GLE) marked the brand’s entry into the emerging SUV category and set a blueprint for a family of high-riding vehicles.

AN AUTOMOTIVE BLUEPRINT

T

he M-Class and the GLE, have become firm favourites all over the world. A combined total of more than 2.4 million have been built over 20 years and the two ranges jointly became the best-selling SUV in the Mercedes-Benz range in New Zealand. Last year I got my hands on it to do a tour to Queenstown and get a handle on its performance in some of the worst winter driving conditions you can get. Sitting quite high with a reasonable clearance, it handled like it was a summer day. Now there’s a new variant of the GLE 250 d 4MATIC and GLE 350 d 4MATIC, known as the ‘Edition 20’. In addition to standard equipment, the Edition 20 adds the AMG Line interior package, the Night Package featuring black exterior accents, 21-inch AMG twin-spoke alloy wheels, AIRMATIC air suspension, sports seats and a three-spoke AMG multifunction steering wheel. The GLE 250 d model utilises a 2.1-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 150 kW and 500 Nm, while the 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo diesel engine in the GLE 350 d model outputs 190 kW and 620 Nm. Both engines are paired to a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and drive all four wheels – great for handling that Lindis Pass ice rink.

EXCEPTIONAL

When Mercedes New Zealand offers you the chance to experience the new revamped E-Class Cabriolet, you don’t hesitate in saying yes – I certainly wasn’t going to!

itting squarely between the smaller C-Class Cabriolet and new flagship S-Class Cabriolet, the E Cabriolet line-up consists of two models, the E300 and E400. The E300 tested here, retailing at $133,500, comes with a variety of options and trim levels, just like its coupe counterpart. These include adaptive cruise control, 20-inch AMG multispoke alloys, Air Body Control Air Suspension, Mercedes Comand Infotainment System. Inside, there is room for four full-sized adults in unparalleled comfort and under the bonnet is a turbocharged 2-litre four pot producing 180kW/370Nm. While the E400 has more grunt (245kW/480Nm), the E300 still feels pretty brisk. Zero to 100km/h takes a respectable 6.4 seconds and the power delivery itself, is refined and very linear. Also, in Sport Plus mode, the steering and throttle response is communicative and direct, while gearchanges on the 9-speed G-Tronic box are also pretty darn quick. If things get chilly when the roof is down, simply turn on the heated seats and AIRSCARF fan mounted in the headrest, which blows hot air on the back of your neck. The E300’s trump card though, is that it makes for a sublime grand tourer. I would happily pootle down to Wanaka and back, just for the experience. After spending a few days in its company, it’s difficult to think of any car in this class which offers the same level of comfort, equipment and quality as the Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet.
