Introducing James Blankley

They say that you never work a day in your life when you really love your vocation – such is the case for James who has a 34 year career in the travel industry, the last 20 of them with House of Travel. 1. Tell us about yourself James. In 2017, following years of ownership of my Auckland House of Travel Agency, my partner and I made the lifestyle decision to sell up and move to Queenstown to build a new home at Jacks Point. I joined the awardwinning team at House of Travel Christchurch City and I work remotely from home. Along with the many loyal clients who after many years I still manage travel for, I have a growing number of Queenstown residents who I work closely with to plan their dream overseas holidays. Working from home offers flexibility for clients as I am available 24/7. 2. What do you love about cruising and why does it make the ideal holiday? Cruise travel is my speciality, I am a strong advocate and have a real passion for it, having had the pleasure of experiencing many cruises myself. Cruising is the fastest growing category of travel for good reason, there is a cruise and ship to suit everybody’s wishes and budget. To unpack once and have your transport, accommodation, restaurants and

entertainment all in one makes cruising the ideal holiday and it really is amazing to wake up in a new port each morning and to spend the day discovering what the local region and it’s people have to offer. 3. You do book several luxurious experiences for your clients. What is HOT for 2020? It is exciting times as the cruise industry matures and is now building ships specifically designed for the “seasoned” cruise customer who is wanting high end luxury combined with adventure to regions like the High Arctic, Antarctica, the Baltic States, Central America and the Galapagos Islands – just to name a few. HOT destinations for 2020 are Riga in Latvia and Tallinn in Estonia – I have recently travelled to both, so happy to help if you are interested. 4. You enjoy European holidays – what top tips do you have for travellers heading to Europe this year? Global warming means that Europe is a great place to visit later in the year now around

October and November. Of course, the weather is never guaranteed at any time but in my own experience over recent years, this is a wonderful time to avoid the huge crowds and the extreme temperatures of the midyear high season. Another tip I’d like to add is to invest in purchasing some packing cells for your luggage. Packing cells allow you to keep your clothing categorized and it makes the job of unpacking or repacking quick and it is very easy to find the clothing that you are looking for. 5. What is on your bucket list for 2020? A European Christmas including a river cruise through the German Christmas Markets and then the actual Christmas period spent in Paris which is still one of my favourite cities. It is very important to book travel over the Christmas period as early as possible as this is peak travel time globally. Contact James on jamesblankley@hot.co.nz or calling +64 27 233 1949

In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. hen a New Year dawns it is already a great year – we’ve yet again been blessed with an opportunity to live and love. And, although it seems rather cliché to say, it really is a time of year that is capable of inciting profound transformative change to mind, body and soul. Of course while some changes in life work, others may not, but the whole point is about giving something new a go. After all, as Einstein so wisely and poignantly pointed out, doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insanity. So whether the changes you are contemplating in your lives this year are great or small – whether it is simply to turn your talented hand to a new hobby, curling your tongue around a new language, changing jobs or taking an entrepreneurial punt on a newABC AUDITED venture – go hard! It’s time to give it your best shot and don’t worry if it doesn’t work out entirely as you had planned, you will no doubt be richer for the experience. The Metropol team is excited to embark on yet another adventurous chapter in 2020 and look forward to you joiningAUDITED us on this journey.

global warming to nudge us to nod off. The concept of allowing 40 winks in the middle of a work day is being discussed as a productivity-boosting bonus in the office – to recharge batteries and counterbalance chaos. Our minds need to empty out the old in order to refill. Enjoying doing nothing doesn’t mean checking emails, chatting or watching TV while flopped catatonically on the couch. That’s cheating. It can take a while for wound-up minds to wind-down and get comfortable with the habit. We innately know when to switch off. It just takes a little neuron rewiring to make it easier, with practise, to tap into our inner timetables. This sweet neutral state of ‘effortless being’ is a natural trait to all living things. Observe animals both in the wild, and the ones chillaxing on our carpets or wandering nonchalantly in the garden – they have it sussed! The nothing experience needs to be guilt-free to be of real benefit. Imagine not achieving everything, or indeed anything, on your daily agenda. Are there any adverse consequences? Doing zilch and zoning out can create momentum, motivation and more energy for the hours and days to follow. When a person stops and does absolutely nothing for a moment, or two, or three, the benefits can be empowering and enlightening. Add in some nature – and that equals bliss.

“I

’ve done nothing today” is often a statement of shame-ridden guilt. However, that very nothingness can be a productive, even lucrative, something. It’s just in disguise. A new movement to purposely slow us all down is fast taking over the globe. Busyness has been attributed to success and worthiness – while doing ‘stuff all’ often holds the stigma of being lazy, unmotivated or unproductive. If only we could see the measurable physiological anti-anxiety benefits that our mind and bodies get from gazing glassy-eyed out the window in the midst of a hectic day. There is a good reason that many of the best inventions, songs and ideas are born in the middle of the night. The mind is empty, quiet and still. We are just lying there in the dark – doing nothing. Enter creativity. Some cultures are better than others at embracing the health-enhancing art of nothingness. The Dutch have a catchy succinct word for the concept – Miksen. It is a verb, a.k.a a doing word, that means to ‘do nothing’. The Italians indulge in a concept known as ‘la dolce far neinte’ translated as ‘the sweetness of doing nothing.’ The Chinese have mastered the concept of ‘wu wei’, meaning inaction, which is seen as central to living a life harmoniously. A sweet empire By Melinda Collins

Oonagh Browne’s love affair with chocolate has been more rich, intense and satisfying than for most. In fact, she says, it saved her life. We catch up with the queen of chocolate about why she believes eight cacao beans a day keeps the doctor away.

I

rish-born Oonagh had been climbing the corporate ladder in London after completing a business degree when her boss gave her “the greatest gift”. “He told me that I would get to the top rung of that corporate ladder,” she explains. Already unhappy in the corporate world, the conversation provided a moment of clarity and she realised reaching the top wouldn’t bring her any satisfaction. Within nine months she had packed it in to travel. Eventually ending up in Australia, she began training to be a yoga teacher. It was during her time here that she met Suzanne Johnson and Bernie Prior who would later open She Universe, the idyllic café perched at the top of Governors Bay. It was when Oonagh decided

to make chocolate for a charity event that she discovered an innate gift for the confection. “It’s like some people who have this innate talent for painting,” she says. “I found that in chocolate. I fell in love.” When Oonagh’s then-husband Declan suggested they move to Christchurch to help Suzanne and Bernie run She Café, the couple made a new home here, but their work in the café wasn’t to be, with a fire destroying it just three weeks after they arrived. It would remain closed for nine months. So instead they started selling Oonagh’s chocolate creations at the Lyttelton Farmers’ Market, her Decadent Date chocolate and hot chocolate were instant hits with the locals. When the rebuilt café opened, it was Oonagh’s creative

Oonagh’s work in Samoa has expanded to Peru and the Solomon Islands, where she is endeavouring to reverse the damaging effect of global demand for chocolate for cacao farmers. Since the commodification of chocolate, large companies have continued to drive the price of beans down, with the supply chain leaving many cacao farmers impoverished, despite hard labour. The knowledge of cacao’s medicinal value has been lost, even to those who farm it and it’s no longer viable to be a cacao farmer, so young people are no longer staying on their farms. Oonagh is putting heart and soul into getting infrastructure and training into these regions, enabling the farmers to earn more and encouraging young people to become cacao farmers. One of the greatest impacts is teaching the farmers how to enjoy the bean themselves, creating cookbooks with recipes and teaching them how to make tea from cacao bean husks (known as Skinny Tea in the Solomons due to its ability to encourage weightloss) and even cacao face masks. She’s passionately spearheading a cacao revolution. “We want to connect the consumer and cacao farmer and close the gap, and for the cacao farmer, more than anything, to be empowered and proud of what they grow, but first they need to be earning a real income. “Cacao was once honoured and revered, then we added sugar and it became something different; its time as a powerful medicine was forgotten, but now we’re experiencing a revolution; a cacao revolution.” “I want people to know it’s the food of the gods.”

chocolate flair that helped She Universe become a local Canterbury icon. With the chocolate winning numerous awards, it was soon being supplied to outlets throughout the country and is now celebrating a move from Governors Bay to the new She Chocolaterie at Riverside Markets this year. Post-quake though, Oonagh experienced severe depression or a ‘mental breakdown’. “I was in the darkest place and nothing could help me, not even the support of amazing, wise friends,” she says. Willing to try just about anything, she started researching natural antidepressants when she discovered cacao; the purest form of the very chocolate she was already in love with. She vowed to have a cacao smoothie every day, combining it with another superfood maca which, combined with cacao, create a powerful antidepressant. “Within 10 days I started coming out of the darkness and I started to have hope. I started to ‘see’ the thoughts rather than ‘be’ the thoughts and I soon learnt to master them,” she says. “I started to delve into the health side of cacao and spend time on a cacao farm owned by a friend in Samoa. It was a profound experience as I discovered my depth of connection with this food. Cacao is one of the oldest foods, with the ability to heal our bodies and support us on so many levels.” Cacao’s health properties are well-supported by science, with the powerful little bean not only packed with nutrients such as iron, magnesium and zinc, but also antioxidants for heart health and neurotransmitters which contribute to wellbeing and happiness. For Oonagh, it’s a daily medicine she swears by. “Eight cacao beans a day keeps the doctor away!”

ANIKA MOA UNLEASHED By Melinda Collins

Anika Moa first burst onto the recording scene at the age of 21, when she released her debut album Thinking Room in 2001.

I

t reached the top of the New Zealand Singles Chart, yielding four hit singles. She’s remained perched at the top of Kiwi consciousness ever since. Although life has changed considerably since those days, the now mother-of-four juggles being knee-deep in nappies with the same offbeat sense of humour that has made her a beloved presenter, MC and now radio host. But nothing has changed perhaps more than her music. Rather than lust, love and heartbreak, her latest album is jam-packed with witches, monsters and Mrs Heather Fiddly Widdly Bum’s Song About Veges. Released in November, it’s her third Songs for Bubbas album; last, but not least. “I love working with babies and kids,”

12 23 January, 2020 Metropol

Anika says. “It fills my heart and makes me proud of myself. I love singing to them and connecting with them; that’s when I feel my happiest.” The journey from ‘grown-up’ country-pop-rock albums to children’s music was a fairly natural progression, Anika explains. “The only way I can write is from what I know. When I was a youngster, I was well… young! Youthful you’d say! “Life was learning how to control my emotions or even learning how to have safe emotions and to go through a lot of lust, love and heartbreak. It’s all so dramatic and rough, then you have kids and you dive into that world. You grow up quickly, but I am a child at heart so that will never leave me. So

having children inspired me to write songs for my bubbas and it grew from there. “I am a baby whisperer… just saying!” The 39-year-old’s ‘bubbas’ include five-year-old Soren and nine-month-old Marigold with wife, TV news reporter-turnedproducer Natasha Utting, along with eight-year-old twins Barry and Taane which she shares custody of with her ex-partner. You can’t really imagine Anika not having fun, but I still ask, how much more fun is writing and recording children’s music? “Every kind of recording is fun, whether it’s adult or kids’ music! I still have a wine at the end of the day!” So how different is Anika Moa post kids to Anika Moa pre kids? “Before I had kids I had a

vision of zen, peace and lovely, well-behaved kids, but the reality is a lot more ‘cray cray’,” she laughs. “Toys everywhere, screaming, tantrums, sugar highs, sugar lows, devices, more screaming (from me lol) and lots and lots of laughter and snuggles and love. It’s a really fine balance of ups and downs. “Keeping it real and being kind to yourself is my mantra. Also – whoever smelt it first has to change it!” Music too is a big part of life for all her children. “My dream is for all my children to learn an instrument and to be as passionate about music as I am, but they will have their own dreams so I’ll go with them and their hearts. As long as none of them are gay. That’s disgusting,” she deadpans in

a way only Anika Moa could possibly get away with. Amongst the adults, she’s arguably better known today as a television presenter and radio host, having recently joined Stacey Morrison and Mike Puru as part of the Drive team at The Hits. “I’d compare it to swimming in the deep ocean and just keeping your energy levels up with a heaving chest, then you go under, but voilà, up pops the head and you continue swimming… repeat that a million times a day and that pretty much sums it up!” she laughs. “I do love my new job with Stacey and Mike. It’s nice to get out of the whare.” Meanwhile, her unconventional interview series Anika Moa: Unleashed

has proven so popular that TVNZ OnDemand has given the greenlight for Anika Moa: Reunited next year, and you’ll often find her face popping up on Seven Sharp, where she’s a fan-favourite guest host. So how does a day in the life of Anika Moa look these days? “Haha… wake up two to three times a night with Marigold; wake up; do kid things (food, walk, drop offs etc) then head to a filming or an ad or a song recording or an MC event or whatever you have for me, then head to The Hits, then drive home, put the kids to bed and have a wine, if I’m honest; talk to my wife for four and a half minutes then pass out, exhausted. “Weekends are for gigs, MC work etc… so no days off, and making time for my mental health is very important to me, so I’m trying to walk more, talk more and have massages, lots more to unwind. Did I mention wine?” Raised in Christchurch, she loves our little slice of heaven and gets down here whenever she can. Her BFF Nicky Claridge, who took this photo and the cover shot, lives in Omihi, in North Canterbury. “I love Ōtautahi! I love my memories of growing up there; the Cathedral; Hagley Park; New Brighton Beach; Scarborough Hill; Lyttelton; gosh there are too many beautiful spots to name. It is a sometimes dark city but very inspiring for a writer like me. “A sensational part of the country/world, plus the rugby!” So how does the next 12 months look in the Moa household? “How long have you got?” she laughs. “I started filming Anika Moa: Reunited - a show about reuniting some of Aotearoa’s finest bands! It’s awesome so far but a lot of work! I am going to tour songs for Bubbas 3 during the school holidays and I have a new baby business I am developing for Kiwi parents. I want to release a few books and merchandise and I’d love to record a country album… “That’s just the first half of the year!”

Q+A

A growing passion By Melinda Collins

Wildly successful home design blogger Julia Atkinson-Dunn recently developed a green-finger. We caught up with Julia about her growing passion.

You started NZ’s very first – and wildly successful – design blog in 2008 before going through a bit of an evolution. How did you first catch the gardening bug? I had always been a flower lover (and roadside thief!) but not at all tempted to grow my own garden beyond a house plant or two. The exact moment gardening entered my life was three years ago when I saw the impressive, stacked vegetable beds in the backyard of our Linwood home-to-be. I realised then and there that I would have to ‘grow things in it so it looked good’. I think the turning point was the fact this garden wasn’t going to be rented, but instead a place I could transform to enjoy for the future! As I got going, pestering my poor mum to answer all my questions, I slowly realised that gardening was a natural and welcome extension

of my passions for design and decorating, in perhaps the most satisfying form of it all! I think that my experience is pretty common of a lot of first-home buyers now, that’s why I wanted to get involved with the Grow Ō Tautahi Garden Festival and share what I’m learning. How excited are you about being the Beginner Gardener Ambassador for the new Grow Ō Tautahi – Christchurch Garden Festival launching in March 2020 and what will your role involve? Incredibly excited on so many levels!!! It’s such a thrill to be involved in an innovative, vibrant Canterbury event and even more so to have a public opportunity to source wisdom for all those local people out there who have shared a similar gardening adventure to me. During the Grow Ō Tautahi festival, I will be running a series of panels on stage (free to attend) aimed specifically at helping beginner gardeners. Here I will invite local gardeners and experts to impart specific advice to answer our questions around getting started, troubleshooting and those tricks and tips that you can’t google!

Metropol Advert 65 x 190 v1

Where do you start when it comes to making heads and tails – or roots and leaves – of everything gardening? The BEST source is a friendly gardener. I’ve discovered that gardeners are eager sharers and helpers and they can really help you on your way. Honestly, it’s highly likely if you knocked on a neighbour’s door with a garden you love that they will come to wander yours armed with advice and maybe even plants! Second to this, the Yates Garden Guide, which has been in print for nearly 80 years, is packed with so much valuable information relevant to our differing growing conditions in NZ. It’s like the beginner’s bible and can support you as you get going and give you a resource to fill in the gaps after a googling session! Or come along to Grow Ō Tautahi in March to hear ideas and talk with expert gardeners as part of my beginner gardener panels! You are also welcome to follow me on Instagram/Facebook or read my blog posts sharing the snippets that I learn along the way too! @studiohomegardening www.studiohome.co.nz 11062019.pdf 1 11/06/19 10:55 AM

TIPS

FOR GARDENING SUCCESS

2 3 4 5

Read the labels and do your research. If a plant requires full sun they aren’t kidding! The result is either plants growing horizontal to the ground searching for the sun OR simply not growing much at all. Dedicate yourself to watering or invest some time and money into an irrigation system – staying on top of this has been key for me! Muster up some patience. There is no beating Mother Nature on how quickly things will grow and if the weather suits. With that said, don’t simply revert to an “easy care” garden, it is astonishing how time flies and in no time you will have flowers blooming! Get a grasp on the plant types – perrenials, annuals, biennials etc. Having a basic understanding of plant life cycles will save you a lot of time and money in the long run! This will also help you build a plan for a garden that has interest all year round. Give yourself a break! Often as adults we don’t start learning new things from scratch, so allow yourself time to come to grips with it all. The actual process of learning, getting your hands dirty, researching bug problems and harvesting is as important as the atmosphere you are trying to create. www.growotautahi.org.nz

lived in New Zealand about 20 million years ago. The bones of Squawkzilla, and a life-size model, have been put together for the exhibition, so visitors can now come face-to-face with our past in never-before-seen detail. Also on display are giant penguins that inhabited the oceans near what is now Waipara more than 60 million years ago. At a Central Otago site with fossils from around 20 million years ago, they uncovered many different types of birds that have never been seen in New Zealand before; bats that walked along the forest floor as well as crocodiles and turtles. The exhibition runs from 13 December 2019 to 12 July 2020. “It will be a summer blockbuster,” Museum Director Anthony Wright says. “We think visitors will be blown away when they see the life-size models of the penguins, the parrot and the crocodile. While the exhibition will be entertaining, it’s grounded in science and we hope people will come away having learnt a little more about the ancient past of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Changing Lives By Melinda Collins

It was once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Renowned journalist Paula Penfold has taken a very literal approach to this adage.

F

her Stuff Circuit investigation into the abortion law reform bill, Paula Penfold is fighting for justice. We catch up with 2019’s Reporter of the Year about changing lives.

You’ve worked on some of the country’s most high-profile stories, notably the Teina Pora case and more recently fraudster Joanne Harrison’s hidden history. What do you consider to have been some of your own personal career highlights? The Teina Pora case would be right up there. We worked on that investigation over five years and it’s some of the most difficult but most satisfying work we’ve done. There are other stories though which have less of a profile but are also important to me, though now that I think about it, the ones that matter almost always involve an injustice of some kind. News organisations throughout the country have been cutting back on investigative journalism, meanwhile Stuff Circuit has been leading the country in this area. How exciting is it to be involved in something which has the power to change – and improve – lives by uncovering critical information? I feel really lucky that I love my job! I’ve been a journalist for a long time but every story is different, so it never gets old. I feel very fortunate that at Stuff Circuit we’re given the time and resource to properly dig into a story and uncover information that should be in the public domain, but for whatever reason has been kept secret or gone unreported. It’s really satisfying trying out new creative ways of telling stories: investigative journalism done in new, multimedia ways, combining documentary with interactivity, text and whatever else we think fits the story. So yeah, it’s hugely exciting, but it often comes with a fair amount of stress too, so we need to be careful about that. I also feel really lucky that I work in an incredible team within Stuff Circuit; people who push each other creatively and journalistically, while also having each other’s backs. How incredible was it to get named Reporter of the Year at the New Zealand Television Awards in November? I know people always say this when they win awards, but it truly was a surprise - the other finalists in the category are journalists whose work I really admire. I think, especially when I’m working in a relatively new venture like Stuff Circuit, winning something like that is useful to draw attention to our stories and the type of journalism we do. And yeah, it did feel good as well! How important do you think investigative journalism is to democracy? I would say this, of course, but I believe it also.

I think investigative journalism and journalism in general is crucial to a healthy democracy. Democracy is about more than just the right to vote; it’s about being fully informed and about being able to have proper conversations about our priorities and values as a society. It’s the role of journalism to hold up a mirror to society, and to keep the powerful accountable by examining and questioning what they’re doing. It’s so fundamentally important that it’s hard to imagine a functioning society without it. The type of journalism we do is expensive, and time and resource-heavy, so if it wasn’t done by journalists with the backing of a major media company, it wouldn’t be done at all. What have been some of your most memorable experiences in your career? Driving up the coast of Leyte in the Philippines in the wake of the devastating Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. It was apocalyptic and I will never forget it. Making a rookie error by thinking we could cross the border from Texas to a Mexican border town and then sit back for a couple of mojitos! We completely under-estimated the risk of trying to film in a town controlled by drug cartels. We were in and out of Mexico within an hour. Filming at a mountaintop cemetery in Bamyan, Afghanistan, just a few months ago, with three mothers who between them had lost seven children, killed in an explosion. The enormity of their grief, combined with the eerie beauty of the place, made it an unforgettable scene. Being gathered in front of the TV with Teina Pora’s supporters watching as the Privy Council law lords delivered their decision, quashing his convictions (Teina couldn’t watch!). The reactions from Malcolm Rewa’s other victims as the verdict came in finding him guilty of Susan Burdett’s murder. On a lighter note (sometimes in this job there aren’t enough of these!), being with Tiki Taane in Vanuatu, as he sang, with his acoustic guitar, to patients waiting to get their sight restored, at a clinic run by the Fred Hollows Foundation. It was gentle and magical; soothing and beautiful. What is the most fulfilling part of what you get to do? Honestly, it’s giving a voice to people who might not otherwise have one. Putting them in a position where they can tell their story or their side of the story, which has never been heard. It’s really satisfying when that leads to change. What does 2020 have in store for you? A documentary which is very much a ‘story’ as opposed to an investigation and which I’m really looking forward to, and some more investigative work - we have some big stories in the pipeline. And my youngest will be finishing her last year at school, so that’ll be the end of an era – and the beginning of a new one.

What attracted you to journalism? I was 14, at high school, when a reporter from the Waikato Times came to visit our English class. I found her utterly inspiring. Her job sounded hugely interesting; it was a mixture of fact and creativity, and it also meant the opportunity to sometimes make a difference. I immediately loved the idea.

Summer safety for pets The team at Ourvets love the holiday season as much as everybody else, but between the fun and frolics, family pets sometimes get overlooked, so here’s some tips to keep them happy and healthy over the holidays.

hile we are filling up on holiday goodies, we all want to give our furry friends a treat too, but keep an eye on what and how much you are giving. Roast meats (e.g. ham and turkey) are often very fatty and can cause acute illnesses for our pets. Avoid fatty parts or skin and only give very small amounts of meat. Cooked bones are a big no-no for pets. They might love these, but the bones can cause major blockages in pets’ guts. The sharp edges of chewed bones can even pierce through the gut and be life-threatening. Check in with the whole family and ensure they are aware of what they should and shouldn’t feed the family pet. Both cats and dogs can quite easily suffer from heatstroke due to their limited ability to cool themselves down (they can’t sweat like us!). Make sure to always have plenty of water available for your pets (some pets love ice

cubes!); avoid taking dogs for walks or runs in the heat of the day (they can burn their feet on the pavement too!). Never leave pets in cars, even for a short time, or if the car is in the shade - cars can be deadly for pets in summer. Many people are aware of how toxic chocolate is to dogs, but many are not aware of how deadly lilies can be for cats. If your cat gets any lily pollen on their coat, be sure to wash it off immediately with lots of water. Be aware of chocolate around the home - on low tables, under the tree or in children’s stockings (that your dog might cheekily sneak into!). Many of the above things can be avoided, and Ourvets wants you and your precious pets to have a safe and healthy holiday season. If you are worried about your pet at all, don’t hesitate to give the team a call. For more on Ourvets, as well as other great tips for your pet, check out the Ourvets website. www.ourvets.co.nz

She first broke a story about the first all-female chapter of Waikato’s Mongrel Mob Kingdom while she was still a student. UC Media and Communication Senior Lecturer, Tara Ross, says Katie was outstanding from the beginning. “She stood out early for her curiosity, drive and hunger for news. She was unafraid of tackling hard stories and, I don’t doubt, can go far in journalism.” Katie has already found work as a journalist for New Zealand Media and Entertainment

(NZME) at Newstalk ZB in Wellington, and this month she is travelling to Jakarta, Indonesia to work for six weeks after being awarded a media internship through the Asia New Zealand Foundation. “I knew I wanted to be a journalist as soon as I started studying Media Communications at UC,” she says. “I don’t know what other job I could do because I think I would get bored. This job is always changing and it’s always exciting. It’s definitely a tough industry but it’s good.” Katie is drawn to “hard news” and first made contacts with Mongrel Mob Kingdom members from Hamilton when they came to UC to give a lecture to Criminal Justice Programme students in September 2019. “I was never really an academic person before but I feel like I’ve found my niche and it shows anyone can succeed at what they do if they find something they’re passionate about and they work hard.” Her dream is to one day work as a foreign correspondent and, with that in mind, she has been learning Arabic in the hope that she might one day be based in the Middle East. She spent a month in the Czech Republic in August 2018 studying a paper in foreign correspondence journalism. The adventurous young woman is also a keen surfer and she edited a youth magazine launched earlier this year called Yo, Vocal.

EO of Spritely, Christopher Dawson, developed the system after his father suffered a medical event at home. “I thought there had to be a way technology can help Kiwi seniors like Mum and Dad, not just to be safer, but also to be healthier and more connected.” John Ryder, Executive Chairman of Qestral Corporation, describes Spritely as an important innovation in the New Zealand aged-care sector. “We’ve invested in Spritely because we believe in its potential as a sectorwide solution to a number of big issues.”

Connection • Digital phonebook • Video calling • Digital noticeboard • Events and notifications • A live weather forecast Alpine View is the first retirement village in NZ to make this kind of touch screen communication system available in every house and apartment. Serviced houses and apartments also get additional Spritely Care features, including personal health monitoring etc, as outlined on their website. Head into the city By Jess Murray

The summer break, for some people, means days and sometimes even weeks to fill. Arguably, there’s only so many times you can go to the beach or trudge the lengths of your local malls. We’ve put together a few of our favourite hotspots to check out this summer.

1

Watch This Space You may have noticed bursts of colouring popping up around the city, especially postearthquake. With something as unfortunate as having vacant and empty spaces lying around the city, something positive came out of it. Christchurch is becoming known as the street art capital and it’s easy to see why.

Watch This Space is a charitable trust that provides tours, showcasing all the street art, murals and graffiti around the evolving city. While the tour is roughly two hours – you don’t have to commit to the whole thing. One of the great things about this tour is that it’s free! But if you want to make a small donation to the trust, it will be warmly welcomed.

MANAGEMENT IN THE WORKPLACE We provide Supervision, Workshops and Employment Assisted Counselling to reduce work related stress, improve relationships and boost productivity in your business.

fashion Punk pout As seen on the Max Mara SS20 runway, dark, bold lippies are making their mark amongst the other lipstick trends of 2020. Swipe on a moody oxblood red or dark violet colour and you’re sure to turn heads – bonus points for pairing with sheer grey eyeshadow. Cherry gloss Reigning supreme since the lipstick’s first creation more than 150 years ago, the classic red lippy has never really left the fashion arena. This year we can expect to see the striking colour take on a vibrant vinyl effect, with high-shine lacquers endorsed by fashion heavyweights like Louis Vuitton and Sies Marjan appearing on runways the world over.

Lip service By Clementine Page

We’re not just paying lip service – we’ve got the lowdown on the hottest lipstick trends for 2020.

90’s throwback Getting sick of the 90’s throwbacks yet? Neither are we! Visible lipliner is quietly making itself known amongst celebrities like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian West. How to: for a simple, natural look, outline your lips using pencil that’s a couple of shades darker than your natural lip colour, then swipe on a clear gloss and you’re all set. Wet-look lips Judging by some of the hottest fashion shows, lipgloss has stolen the spotlight from the once-popular liquid matte. One simple coat of clear gloss is all that’s needed, but for something ultra-sweet, take inspiration from Chanel’s ‘strawberry-bitten’ lips: lipstick in just the middle of the lips, blended out on the outer edges for a diffused effect, and a layer of gloss on top for ‘juicy texture’.

Right now, it seems as if everyone in the beauty community is releasing an eyeshadow palette. It’s currently on trend to stand out from the crowd and there’s some amazing palettes on the market that can help you do just that.

B

right and bold colours have been all the rage in the beauty world – from Morphe x James Charles to the Shane Dawson x Jeffree Star Conspiracy eyeshadow palette; both palettes encouraging the buyer to ‘unleash their inner artist’. With so much hype surrounding them, we thought we’d provide a few ways to experiment with your fancy new beauty toolkit.

Purrrfect – this look is the definition of ‘simple yet effective’. Choose the brightest shade you can find (try a neon green or orange) and line your lids, finishing it off with a wing. Who doesn’t love a cat-eye? A clash of colours – you’ve probably spent most of your life trying to pair complementary colours together on your eyes. Well we’re telling you it’s time to forget everything you know and use shades that sit on opposite ends of the colour wheel. Swipe one across your eyelid and the other along your lower lash line. Oh my ombré– Electric Avenue is happening 22 February… so it’s quite literally around the corner. If you’re not in to dressing to the nines but still want to stand out from the crowd, this look is perfect. A multicolour ombré is a great way to pack a punch when it comes to your eye look.

t’s hard to believe it’s a new decade, which makes us all feel a little older. While some of us love to embrace aging, there’s no harm in wanting skin that looks a bit younger and plumper. If you’re after a less invasive alternative to injectables, Dermapen microneedling could be just your ticket to a glowing and more youthful complexion. The treatment uses a pen-like device with tiny “microneedles” which make very small punctures in your top layers of skin (a fraction

of a millimetre deep), which stimulates your skin’s natural healing process. The result is a rejuvenated complexion of plump and firm skin, which will continue to improve for the next few months as your skin builds new collagen and elastin. Nicola Quinn Beauty and Day Spa is a Dermapen Gold Authorised Treatment Provider, meaning you can rest assured you’ll be getting superior results and safety using only the most advanced microneedling device, the Dermapen4.

Allows the skin to work more efficiently, increasing the absorption of skincare products. Exfoliating before a facial massage increases this further. We recommend doing this before bed so the product can absorb overnight without any additional coverage (like makeup or sunscreen). Stimulates the lymph nodes, which flush out fluids and toxins that congest the skin and cause under-eye bags/ dark circles. Relieves tension in the facial muscles, stopping wrinkles in their tracks. Focus gently on the soft lines around the mouth, eyes and eyebrows for maximum results. Can help to alleviate stress! According to a study in the journal Biomedical Research, facial massage activates the sympathetic nervous system, which reduces anxiety levels and uplifts mood.

Love is in the air “There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence,â€? so wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson in the 19th century, and perhaps this pithy but somewhat profound statement encapsulates best why the rose has, for centuries, symbolised love and is the ower most given on Valentine’s Day.

llan Jarden of Central City Flowers is a passionate floral designer who goes that extra mile to create fresh and stunning arrangements certain to captivate and charm every heart; The recipient of a Valentine’s bouquet created by Allan and his team of fully qualified florists is lucky indeed. Should roses not be the flowers you choose to woo with, then pop online to browse beautiful bouquets for some inspiration; alternatively, if something with a touch of understated allure is more your style, then a Phalaenopsis orchid in a ceramic vase, for instance, makes for an elegant and enchanting gift of love. But for the ultimate heart-hit of Cupid’s arrow, consider a delivery of flowers, chocolates and something sweetly scented, such as a pamper pack of botanic and fruit fragranced goodies, a rose scented soap or a divinely perfumed candle, to your loved one’s door. You never know, by this time next year, you might be clutching another bouquet from Central City Flowers and repeating after the minister those two magic little words – “I do! Find Central City Flowers at 92 Colombo Street (corner Colombo Street and Fisher Avenue), phone 03 961 8165 or email info@christchurchcityflowers.co.nz.

The clinic has a bright, spacious vibe. How did you get it so right? Our vision was for a dental clinic that gives a positive, uplifting experience, in which the needs of our patients are paramount, from their initial one-hour bespoke consultation through to their final appointment. What about your fees? We’ve structured our fees at an affordable level, with a view to stabilising the dental condition. We build a solid foundation for dental health at a very reasonable price.

Dentists with a Difference Fast becoming leaders in their field, we asked Christchurch Boutique Dental why they stand out from the rest.

What’s your point of difference? We do everything in-house. From general dentistry to complex procedures, such as implant surgery, complex root canals, cosmetic gum surgery, Botox and fillers. Procedures are done under a microscope; with 30 times the magnification, we can work on things not visible to the human eye. Also, because of our expertise, we’re able to offer patients a more holistic treatment plan that covers all of the bases.

Your fillings have a 10-year warranty! How does this happen? We utilise the first teaching in dentistry – the rubber dam. The dam isolates moisture from the patient’s mouth; combined with the precision of the microscope, we can perfect our procedures from every level. Without the dam, the tooth will never be restored to its full potential. Find Christchurch Boutique Dental at 105 Wainui Street, Riccarton Monday to Saturday, 9am-5pm. The fluffy towel treatment Invest in the softest, oversized white spa-towels and a basket of rolled-up flannels. A plush new bath mat, the kind to sink your toes into, is a must. White robes and slippers complete the pamper package. Plant purity Aloe vera, bamboo plants, orchids and peace lilies imitate exotic spa locations with the healing vibes of nature. Fresh, fragrant flowers will fill the smallest room of the house with their sultry scent. Peaceful hues Whites, soft neutrals and eggshell pastels are synonymous with serenity – and spa sanctuaries. Rather than bold and bright décor, choose shades that slow the pulse. If the bathroom is already black, just twist the theme to exotic. Under a waterfall Install a rain-head shower attachment for an undera-waterfall feeling or a massaging showerhead for relaxing bliss. Let water be the beauty therapist.

costlier than waxing, the savings in the longer term make it an affordable and far more lucrative beauty investment. It also saves so much precious time! No more maintenance. Another bonus is no ingrown hairs, or having to put up with regrowth in between waxes, just when you need it the least. And as for the daily grind of shaving – need we say more? A laser treatment is often over a series of 6-12 sessions, during the cyclic hair-growth phase, with breaks in between. Some people notice a finer regrowth right from the beginning. Both men and women have seen the light and chosen a laser treatment to de-fuzz all sorts of body parts. Laser uses a concentrated light beam which penetrates directly and deep into the hair follicle. It is not to be confused with an IPL treatment, which uses a broad spectrum of light. The two procedures are very different. The professionals will be happy to explain all the facts, debunk the myths, and recommend the best treatment for your skin and hair type. Hairless summer days, here we come!

patient’s name, dose time and the medicines to be taken at the specified time. “The medication sachet system is especially good for making it easy to remember to take your medications, customers who are on multiple medications or complicated regimens, customers who are travelling or needing to take medications away with them (for day trips, lunch excursions) and safety as all medications are in one place and can be easily stored.” It also provides patients with a continual supply of medications, so they never feel like they’re going to be caught short without them. When they are due to pick up a new supply of medicines, patients receive automatic reminders, and there’s flexible, daily delivery options for the local community. “We have a great community, and we would like them to benefit from this service,” Ed says. Now taking its rightful place in the global spotlight as a ‘cannonball of goodness’, the humble blackcurrant was once known mainly for its high vitamin C values and as the basis of the free wartime children’s drink, Ribena. Turns out, vitamin C was only a small part of blackcurrants’ superpowers.

A

fter extensive clinical research blackcurrants, and more specifically New Zealand blackcurrants, have been found to contain a key nutrient vital to brain and whole body health – enhancing cell growth and slowing age-related cognitive decline. The nutrient is a neuropeptide called cyclic Glycine-Proline (cGP). When available to the body in high

enough quantities, cGP regulates the availability of an essential hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1). With New Zealand’s proud tradition of biotech innovation, Associate Professor Jian Guan of Auckland University discovered cGP in the early 90s. Research shows our levels of cGP decline as we age. If cGP is in short supply, then IGF-1

Grierson, an agronomist with 38 years in the blackcurrant industry, knew there was something special about the health benefits of NZ blackcurrants. “We know what goes into Brain Shield and it is in a very natural form,” Jim says. The blackcurrants are grown, processed and made into the capsules here in Canterbury. “Brian Shield delivers an average daily dose of cGP via your brain signalling pathways and whole of body function. New Zealand blackcurrants are truly a superfruit when you understand the benefits you get from them,” David says. Brain Shield is the only product in the world marketed with cGP under a full Novel Patent. “There is no pharmaceutical equivalent or alternative, it is unique to the blackcurrant species,” Jim says. “Each capsule delivers an average daily dose and it is very safe – you cannot overdose,” David adds. Vitality NZ has five further products in their health and wellnes product range – Active, Digestive, Eye, Omega, and Women’s Health. www.vitalitynz.nz

cannot function sufficiently, and neuro-degenerative illnesses are more likely to occur and be severe. Sufferers of Parkinson’s disorders and stroke have been observed to have low levels of cGP. Administering cGP to stroke patients within 12 to 48 hours after a stroke greatly reduces brain damage and speeds up recovery. Our bodies’ need for cGP is beyond dispute, with benefits for all ages, from babies in utero, to infants, children and adults. Anecdotal evidence from large numbers of people suggests cGP improves not just neuro degenerative disorders, but symptoms of Angelman’s, Autism and ADHD. In a published paper on Rett Syndrome, administration of natural cGP showed significant and ongoing body and cognitive function improvements. North Canterbury’s own Vitality NZ has captured cGP from blackcurrants in capsule form and, for obvious reasons, named it Brain Shield™. Director David Eder is one of the most long-standing growers of blackcurrants in New Zealand, while Managing Director Jim

YOUR WAY TO

fab skin By Melinda Collins

They say you are what you eat. But can you feast your way to fabulous skin? Metropol catches up with Oxford Women’s Health dietitian Sara Widdowson to discuss the impact of diet on your skin.

How much influence does our diet have on our skin? It seems many of us have skin complaints we would rather live without and, while there is no shortage of topical creams and lotions claiming to give the results you desire, there is often little attention given to the importance of nutrition when it comes to skin health. Zinc, vitamins A, C and D, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, are all key players in your skin’s health and the nutritional treatment of skin complaints.

What foods should we be avoiding? There is some evidence that foods that contribute to a high glycaemic diet (high in refined carbohydrates and sugar) can contribute to the development of acne. This is because high sugar levels in the bloodstream cause the release of a hormone called insulin, which increases production of androgens – hormones associated with an increase in acne. When eating carbohydrates, aim to include those high in fibre, such as wholegrains, pulses, legumes, vegetables and fruit, rather than foods with added sugar.

What are some of the best foods we can eat to make the most of our skin health? Zinc Zinc is an essential micronutrient for many processes within the human body, including skin healing. Research has shown that those with acne have lower zinc stores than those without skin complaints. The exact mechanism in which zinc assists in the treatment of acne is not fully understood but what is clear is that there is a relationship between zinc intake and acne. Zinc is relatively safe to take as a supplement and is found in food sources such as red meat, shellfish and nuts or seeds.

Vitamin A Vitamin A has been shown to prevent UVlight mediated skin damage and is likely useful for the treatment of psoriasis. Vitamin A is found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, as well as eggs and dark leafy vegetables.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Omega-3 essential fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fats that are known to have health benefits, such as reducing inflammation in women with endometriosis and protection against heart disease. When it comes to skin health, supplementation of omega-3 is useful for dermatitis and psoriasis treatment. You can find omega-3 in foods such as oily fish, avocado and olive oil.

Vitamin D This vitamin is unique as it is found in poor quantities in our food. Most of our vitamin D comes from sunlight but there is a fine line between sun exposure that is helpful for skin and increasing your risk of sun damage. Vitamin D reduces inflammation and improves immunity and skin healing time.

Vitamin C Vitamin C is often taken to prevent or treat a cold but it also plays a valuable role in skin health. Remember stories of sailors getting scurvy while out at sea for months without fruits and vegetables? This is due to vitamin C deficiency. While deficiency in recent times is uncommon, appropriate intake does promote skin hydration and wound healing.

Canterbury Bride

Beauty for the big day By Tracey Edwardes

Brides will be letting their true beauty really shine through this decade, with makeup magic that has come a very long way.

H

ailing from Christchurch, Charlotte Edwardes, a wedding makeup artist at Island Beauty on romantic Waiheke Island, makes up stunning brides from all nationalities. Her number one tip: “keep it natural to radiate warmth from within – so you’re glowing from the inside.” “A softer, natural look seems to be the trend, and products are now unbelievable in how they can achieve this. Contouring is less pronounced now – much softer – as there are too many high-definition lenses out there to capture any 40 23 January, 2020 Metropol

stage tricks!” She says no particular trend reigns; people just like to look different to what they do every day at work. Also, personality, skin tone, and what suits the colour of the skin and face shape matters the most. “However, there are less nude-shaded lips now and more colour. Some brides really suit that classic matte red, especially for a Chanel ’40s look. Some with naturally rosy lips are opting for just gloss. They might want a pink lippy to match a pink bouquet for example. Soft corals, apricots and peaches

are also featuring – glorious with an heirloom antique-lace dress. Pink undertones fair better than orange and brown for whiter-looking teeth, and a lip conditioner makes a big difference.” Charlotte see brides of all ages looking absolutely beautiful for their big day. “The latest formulas of powder-cream blushes are more forgiving for fine lines, and are best applied directly on the cheek. Pigments are now richer, sharper and a lot finer – and therefore more flattering. Goldshimmered eyelids and bronze highlights can be sensuously subtle. Mineral foundations are perfectly lightweight for dewy skin at any age, and I use a high-definition setting powder.” A highlight for the bridal party is getting glammed up together. “I recently made up a grandmother of the bride in her ‘90s. She was crying because she felt so beautiful.” The eyes express all on the wedding day. Local eye-makeup influencer Nikita Rindel is all about eyes on her popular Instagram page Nikitahhx. Over the past couple of years,

she’s noticed brides and bridal parties wanting a more natural and simplistic look, rather than a defined contour and smokey eyes, and says 2020 will mark this exact trend. “Brides will instead concentrate on enhancing their natural beauty rather than on the ‘creativity’ of the makeup. Fake lashes always make the eyes pop, so I feel this won’t go away anytime soon – but rather than rock a winged liner and daytime smokey eye, brides will opt for a light and more simplistic look such as a light shimmer and semi-dramatic lashes. Ardell offer the best bridal lashes in my opinion; lightweight yet dramatic enough to make a statement.” Experimenting and trialling new products and different looks is always an exciting part of the planning. Youngblood is a makeup line developed by former medical aesthetician Pauline Youngblood. Its luxurious base of fine natural minerals avoids common irritants often found in makeup – imperative for a stress-free wedding day. Feeling calm and serene in your skin ensures you will look it too.

It’s not only a New Year, but it’s a new decade, making makes 2020 the ultimate time to turn heads with a courageous new look.

W

hat could be more courageous – and exciting – than being a silver siren? Because today, going grey doesn’t mean letting yourself go, V For Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee says. “We can give you a shimmering sexy blonde or cool iris

sparkle, or many more.” The V For Hair and Beauty team ‘gets’ silver grey hair and has all the latest techniques and products to make embracing your grey easy, with ongoing training keeping them at the top of their silver grey hair game. Rather than leaving a harsh regrowth line, their techniques will disguise new growth with a soft, flattering look and easy maintenance regimes will keep your silver grey hair looking amazing. Head in for a complimentary consultation and seize this exciting time to reinvent and trademark the new era. www.vforhair.co.nz

The zeitgeist of ‘you do you’ extends even and perhaps especially, to that most unifying of life’s milestones; the point at which the one you love becomes your pair-bond from this day forward unto the great hereafter.

M

odern couples understand a successful marriage allows the individual essence of both parties to thrive and this is mirrored in their selection of personalised wedding rings. The days when wedding rings matched – just because – are a relic of a more prescribed era. Personal taste, colouring, and hand dimensions now drive the

choice. A delicate rose gold and diamond ring can join in matrimony with a solid platinum – the combinations are as varied as the wedded bliss they symbolise. The team at Via Sollertia believes every wedding ring should represent the unique brand of love and honour its owner brings to the union. www.viasollertia.co.nz

TOP PICKS By Céline Gibson

When it comes to summertime fresh fruit and vegetables, we Kiwis are truly blessed with the bountiful best. But what of late summer and beyond? Will there still be rich pickings? You betcha!

B

elow is an A-Z of what’s on offer. A is for apple. Harvested between February and May, varieties such as ballarat, braeburn, cox’s orange, fuji, gala, golden delicious, granny smith, red delicious, and royal gala ensure to ‘keep the doctor away’. The avocado is a fruit (yes, fruit!) that, due to being harvested at different times of the year, is another all-year goodie. It’s one of the few fruits that contains monounsaturated fat – that’s the good fat that helps lower blood cholesterol. Look for varieties such as hass,

reed, fuerte and carmen. Beans are a protein-rich superfood. High in fibre and antioxidants, these mighty legumes are great for the waistline, and may aid in disease prevention. Take your pick from green, French, butter or broad beans. Beetroot is another superfood readily available. Studies have shown beetroot helps lower blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, and is rich in potassium, folate, vitamin C and other important minerals. Berries are a great source of antioxidants, so not only are these little darlings delicious,

they do heaps to protect body cells and control free radicals. Make a berry delectable dessert of whipped cream, blackberries, blueberries, blackcurrants and strawberries. Yum! Bravo for brassicas, broccoli and broccolini, while versatile veges buttercup squash and butternuts can be baked, boiled, sautéed, added to salads and stir-fries, or made into a nourishing soup. Cabbages and cauliflowers can be found all year round, as can celery, capsicums, cucumber and carrots. Heirloom carrots, in colours of

orange, cream and purple, look beautiful and taste sensational. Eggplant (aubergine to the French), especially the purple variety, is an all-year star. “Bring on the ratatouille, René!” Garlic and ginger may be like chalk and cheese, but they’re always available, are vital for health and, let’s face it, no meal is quite the same without ‘em. Grapes, honeydew melons, mango, nashi pears, nectarines, passionfruit, peaches, plums are all available through to March, and last but not least is the mouth-watering watermelon. Check out the 5+aDay website for seasonal inspiration. www.5aday.co.nz/whats-in-season

Feeding the Soul By Clementine Page

Early human civilisations viewed food as medicine. Today, taste and convenience trump nutritional objectives when it comes to our food. Yet as more of us are seeking healthier lifestyles, there’s a growing interest in nutrition. We check out a few of the most nutrient-dense foods and how to incorporate them into our diets.

Kale

1

Of all the dark leafy greens, kale takes the top spot. Without a doubt one of the most super superfoods, kale is brimming with vitamins C, A, K1 and B6, plus large amounts of potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and manganese. It also has a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Kale also packs a powerful punch of antioxidants such as quercetin (an anti-viral that can combat the common cold) and carotenoids for good eyesight. Kale can be eaten raw or cooked – add it to pasta sauce, soups, curries, smoothies and salad! And why not switch out your potato chips for a healthier alternative? Line a tray with washed kale leaves, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake until the edges are brown (10 to 15 mins) and voilà – kale chips!

Quinoa

2

Perhaps the most nutritious grain of all, quinoa is a one of the few plant goods considered a complete protein, offering all the essential amino acids in sufficient amounts. This complex carbohydrate is a fantastic energy source that will keep you fuller for longer and is not only high in protein and fibre – it’s also packing several B vitamins, magnesium, iron, potassium and phosphorus. Good news for coeliacs and glutenfree folk: this whole grain is naturally free from gluten! Quinoa can replace pasta or rice as the primary source of carbs in a meal. It can also be used as a substitute for your morning porridge! For dinner, why not stuff capsicums or heirloom tomatoes with a seasoned quinoa mix for a hearty plant-based and gluten-free meal?

Garlic

3

Seaweed

4

These amazing little cloves are in a league of their own! Not only does garlic make almost every savoury dish much tastier, it’s also loaded with vital nutrients such as calcium, potassium, copper, manganese and selenium. Allicin, garlic’s active ingredient that gives it its unique odour, is an incredibly important nutrient that reduces inflammation and offers antioxidant benefits. Garlic has also been shown to fight off the common cold, and lower blood pressure and ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol.

Seaweed/kelp deserves more recognition than it currently gets – it’s not just for fish! Seaweed has been found to be even more nutritious than land vegetables in many cases; it’s particularly high in minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese – and iodine! Iodine is vital for optimal thyroid function, and because New Zealand soils are relatively low in iodine, many Kiwis are lacking this nutrient in their diet. Eating kelp or consuming kelp supplements once a week can give your body all the iodine it needs.

Garlic can be incorporated into most savoury foods like pasta, salad, pesto, soups/ stews, stir-fries and more. Not a fan of the garlic taste? Dried garlic capsules are available from most health food stores and vitamin retailers.

Try adding a sheet of nori to a wrap or sandwich, make your own sushi rolls, or incorporate small pieces of nori into your salads or stir-fries. Seaweed snacks are also available from most supermarkets and Asian food stores, as are kelp noodles.

Putting the spice into innovation If you’ve made your way over to the Lyttelton Farmers’ Markets on a Saturday morning and noticed the ‘Bambina’, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were looking at your usual meaty sausage lying on a beautiful fresh bread roll.

I

t’s not even clear upon tasting that this is, in fact, an innovative plant-based creation. Lightly spiced with fennel seeds and paprika, and with a chewy texture that gets crispy when it’s shallow-fried, the Bambina looks and cooks much like a meat sausage, but is in fact, completely meat-free. This impressive display of local food innovation has sizzled its way to the top of

Red Eight Cafe Open Monday to Saturday

the 2019 FoodStarter competition where plant-based and vegan options dominated the entries. Growing up in Argentina meant there was a strong connection between food and socialising for Ananda Simply Wholefoods founders Fernando Gutierrez and Marita Lopez. “Growing up in Argentina, barbecues were always an excuse to get

together and socialise; that’s in our genes,” Fernando says. “Every chance to cook or share food with friends and family was a good one.” So when the couple went vegan 12 years ago, it meant getting creative with their meat alternatives. When they arrived in the land of the long white cloud, they found just one vegan sausage available on the market.

“When we first arrived in New Zealand from Argentina seven years ago, we realised there was a gap in the market for a good, high protein, plant-based product,” Fernando says. The couple began producing the Bambina sausages, along with vegan and gluten-free patties – a smoked lentil patty and a chickpea patty – and their classic Argentinian Chimichurri dressing, also vegan and gluten-free. “We started at the Opawa Famers’ Markets, then the Riccarton Bush markets, now we’re at the Lyttelton Markets. From there we were able to build up regular customers and then moved into shops and restaurants,” says Fernando, who worked as a full-time landscaper until three months ago, before moving to part-time hours so he could concentrate on making sausages. “But now we have a lot more to do!” They certainly do, with the FoodStarter win

coming in when Marita was 37 weeks pregnant with their second child. The Bambina sausage was one of 121 entries to the FoodStarter competition, a partnership between Foodstuffs South Island and the Ministry of Awesome (MoA), based at the Te Ōhaka Centre for Growth and Innovation, at Ara Institute. More than 90 percent of entries had a health, environment and dietary awareness focus, with four of the top five products being vegan. “The entries showed just how impactful the current trend for plant-based and vegan is,” Ministry of Awesome Chief Awesome Officer Marian Johnson says. “We’re in the early adopter phase at the moment, but we are seeing a lot of startups in that area.” She often buys vegetarian sausages, but says the Bambina was a particular stand-out. “This was amazing – it actually tasted like a lovely spicy pork sausage,” she says. “It held together really well and had the kind of texture you’d expect from a good sausage. It was an incredibly tough competition, and we saw an outstanding display of innovation, invention and passion from all five of our finalists.” It was a sentiment expressed by all the judges. Foodstuffs South Island CEO Steve Anderson says all the top five entries showed stunning innovation, but Ananda Simply Wholefoods’ vegan Bambina sausage was exceptional. “You can’t tell it’s plant-based – we thought there must be some kind of meat in there, but there’s definitely not. The balance of flavours and textures make it a truly worthy winner.” The $75,000 business incubation prize package includes product development from FoodSouth, brand and design guidance from Strategy Advertising, business startup incubation at Te Ōhaka - Centre for Growth & Innovation, guidance from MYOB staff and guaranteed placement of the winning product in all New World supermarkets across the South Island – a prize Fernando and Marita describe as “life-changing”.

Out with perfection By Tracey Edwardes

Have you ever swooped in with a coaster, just in the nick of time before your guest puts a coffee cup down on your – eeeek – shiny new coffee table? Relax, and put your feet up – it doesn’t matter so much anymore.

P

erfection in the home is out of vogue for 2020. After all, we are now being less wasteful and slowing our unsustainable

consumer appetite. Invest in quality and hang on to those timeless treasures – no matter their age spots.

430 ST ASAPH STREET!

Unravelled threads of a handcrafted throw, artwork with a chunk missing or a brazen watermark, a brass fireside piece

with a little harmless rust – it all adds to the charm! Use your imagination and creativity. A case in point: a time-faded pale blue carpet that’s seen better days. Take a look at the floaty frescos of the Italian paintings – there’s a similarity in the ethereal wishwash of subtle shade. Instead of replacing the carpet, work with it – and play up the Latin romance. Patina is the new perfect. Just think of a time-stencilled, olde worlde tabletop, buffed in French polish to show off its battle scars. Our modern pieces can equally enjoy the same freedom. From wallpaper to wall units, you can also buy what will age well anyway and function throughout the tumbles of family life – sticky-pawed infants, bull-in-a-china-shop teenagers and cats who see couches as claw-sharpening stations. A quality leather lounge suite, for example, can take a lot of battering and will look beautiful for generations, aging like a fine wine – and won’t be harmed by a glass or two being spilled on it either. Tip-toeing around the edges of a precious new rug defeats its purpose. Our abodes are for living in – really living. Visitors enjoy a place where they can feel at home – not just admire. Wear and tear is also a memory diary in a way. If the gouge on the sideboard reminds you of a rollicking New Year’s Eve party, then surely that must be a good thing!

SIGNATURE LIVELINESS

Turquoise is one of most calming and soothing colours you could use to make your space feel relaxing. Named after a mineral of the same brilliant chroma, its hue is reminiscent of Tiffany boxes to some and Caribbean waters to others.

T

urquoise is often confused with aqua, teal and light blue. While it’s true that turquoise is pretty similar to all of them, it is still a unique colour all on its own, and is obtained by mixing light blue, light green, and a tiny of vibrant yellow for its signature liveliness. Turquoise home décor is

often perceived as exotic, although it’s considerably easy and practical to combine with a wide variety of styles from bold and vibrant to more traditional looks. In what would have otherwise been a very basic bathroom, this space has been given a massive mood lift with Resene

Yes Please on the tongue-andgroove panelling to complement the creamy yellow undertones of the Resene Elderflower walls. Staining the floors with Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash nods to a natural, beachy feel, which inspired the incorporation of sea-coloured accessories in Resene Meditation, Resene

Kandinsky, Resene Remember Me and Resene Freelance. By sticking to crisp white bath linens and bathroom fixtures with stainless steel chrome finishes, like the LeVivi Marbella Freestanding Bath and Devon Vanity from Plumbing World, the result feels restful and spa-like.

We’ve mastered how to hygge our home, by creating a serene and clutter-free space, it’s now time to learn to lagom. While the words appear to be a scramble of Scandinavian slang, beneath the surface lies very interesting inspirations for decorating your home.

3. 4.

5. 6. 7. 8. HIGH QUALITY PVC FENCING

De-clutter – this speaks for itself. Bring in nature – there should be a balance between the home and the environment around it. If you live by the sea, seashells or pebbles are a nice way to incorporate this. Use muted colours – Swedish homes like to keep it simple with very organic and muted tones. Try textures – experimenting with throws, rugs and other textures is a great eyecatching addition to your home. Incorporate plants – low maintenance ones are great. Pay attention to lighting – utilise that natural light! Go vintage – creates a comfy and cosy feel. Keep it pristine – carpet is hard to clean, so get rid of it altogether.

For the love of lagom

W

hile there is no direct translation from Swedish to English, it roughly means ‘not too much and not too little – just right’. This way of thinking is a great idea to channel when you’re decorating your home this summer. Niki Brantmark could be classed as the queen of lagom with her book, Lagom: Not Too Little, Not Too Much: The Swedish Art of Living a Balanced, Happy Life, that started it all. She gives eight basic tips to lagom.

New Year NEW APPROACHES Welcome to 2020: a new year, a new decade and for many, myself included, a chance to try new ways of looking at and maximizing life. I’ve entered this year in a manner similar to previous years. I’m excited about the future and buoyed by the opportunities ahead. Some of these are already in the planning and some are absolutely unknown, but will no doubt show themselves when the time is right (they always do). I like to stay open to that. As a natural optimist and perpetual organizer, I also like to review the previous year, find the lessons – whether good, difficult or somewhere in between – and then learn from them. So, with that in mind, here’s what is resonating for me as I consider both the personal and the professional path ahead. Connection and happiness. I’ve recently spent time looking at aspects of well-being and happiness (that’s what a holiday does for you!) and, as a result, the theme for our company this year is ‘Wellbeing and Resilience’. Why? Well, we know from experience that it can get very tough in the real estate industry, whether you’re brand-new or a

veteran, and as a leadership team we’re deeply committed to relieving some of the stress, insecurities and constant disappointments that can accompany the profession. To do this, we’re enlisting the support of numerous professionals to help in the journey – experts in nutrition, sleep, financial management and resilience – which I think will be a change-maker. We are launching our team support program with a presentation by a recent New Zealander of the Year, Mike King. In doing the research prior to concluding that we need to increase our support framework, I came across a study conducted by Harvard University. This 80-year-old study, known as the Harvard Study of Adult Development (one of the longest studies on adult life), found that close relationships and connection kept people happy and that embracing a community helped them live longer whilst also keeping brains healthier. The study also found that the happiest of the group of 724 participants credited amongst their life lessons, a) not sweating the small stuff and b) letting go of past failures. As simple as both these lessons sound, neither is easy, but both are deeply

beneficial when applied to the real estate industry – or many other industries, for that matter. So, connection, community, collaboration and everything these things entail will be a vital part of the year ahead for our company, as I hope they will be for you. If they’re not, and a new career is part of your New Year plans, contact me. Life is simply too short to be standing still or feeling disconnected, and happiness is too fleeting. Otherwise, try yoga (I'm going to!) and have a magical year. * We will be making a limited number of complimentary tickets available for Mike’s presentation on February 11th, so please email or text me before Feb 7th if you’re interested.

Creating the perfect home just for you

Fabulous Finishing Understanding colour, having good taste, and knowing how to select individual elements to create a beautiful and inviting whole is not something that can be taught. It comes from the heart, it is innate and, combined with attention to detail plus a natural empathy with clients, it leads to an interior design house of the calibre of Christchurch’s own Kit and Caboodle.

A

t the studio, Alex Marie and Andrea Tudehope have created a temple of gorgeous fabric, furniture and finishing touches that are just a tempting hint of the luscious comfort that they can create for your home. Inspired by the great designers, Alex and Andrea follow the William Morris ethic – that you should not have anything in your home that you do not believe to be beautiful or useful. European designers such as David Hicks, Robert Couturier, Colefax and Fowler, and more latterly the Americans such as Albert Hadley and Daniel Romualdez have shaped their approach. Distilling the giants of interior design and adding their own flair has created an ethos

of comfort and soul at Kit and Caboodle, which means they are well on their way to becoming one of the ‘greats’ themselves. While never trend-driven, “it does follow that fashion in clothing design filters down to influence things that are happening in interior design,” Andrea says. For them it’s about layering to get a beautiful room to come together. “A beautiful room must be personal; it must never look like a ‘stage set’ and we would never fit out entirely in one brand,” Alex says. “Not everyone gets everything new,” Andrea says. “We often work from at least one existing item that is staying in the room, such as a work of art or a sofa.” If they are working with a blank canvas, they start with floor, walls, and curtains. “We begin with the most expensive items and then it is about layering to create the intimate and comfortable style of life, with accents or surprises to stimulate the senses,” Alex explains. Freshening up antique or classical style furniture with contemporary fabrics or with bright colours is a passion, and this is a delicious task to undertake with clients given the huge range of fabrics available. New Zealand agents for the stunning range from Melbourne, Nine Muses Textiles, the gorgeous fabrics are suitable for all furnishings including upholstery, curtains, lampshades and cushions. Printed onto Libeco Belgian Linens using digital technology, artist and director of Nine Muses Tigger Hall has hand-painted every design, bringing the imperfections and colour variations, while keeping the aesthetic and beautiful feel of traditional textile processes. “There is something for everyone, modern and contemporary colour juxtapositions through to traditional colour palettes,” Alex says. “The range feels fresh and clean, and we’ve done some lovely projects with it over the years,” Andrea adds.

Design defying gravity By Céline Gibson

One of the coolest bathroom trends of 2020 is floating vanities. Ideal for smaller bathrooms, they can create an illusion of size and space.

D

ouble floating vanities are a practical way to free up floor area. Because of their clean, minimalistic look, you can update and transform your space without compromising the overall interior design. A beachhouse bathroom, for example, morphs from tired and drab into something sleek and edgy. Patterned tiles and handsome hardware paired with a white floating vanity bring a timeless elegance, while textured finishes or grained woods make for a visually stunning statement. Restrict the colour palette alongside floating vanities to two to three colours and cut the clutter – less is, after all, more. From rustic to modern, floating vanities add pizazz to your bathroom and make cleaning a breeze. What’s not to love?

build DR IAN LOCHHEAD - CREDIT DUNCAN SHAW-BROWN

THE STORY OF AN ICON

Christchurch’s proud tradition of exceptional public architecture is evident in one of the city’s favourite buildings – the Christchurch Town Hall.

P

laying prestigious host to numerous celebrations, concerts and civic events over the years, the building once described as the city’s ‘public living room’ reopened triumphantly in 2019 after a successful campaign for its restoration.

Through the tortuous beginnings of the original project, to the battle to save the complex post-quake, a new book published by Canterbury University Press, captures an intimate story of the building’s survival. It was a fitting project for

former Associate Professor of Art History at UC Dr Ian Lochhead who edited The Christchurch Town Hall 1965– 2019: A dream renewed. Dr Lochhead was an early advocate of repair and restoration, expressed his views in a piece titled ‘Let our public living room live again’ published in The Press on 20 March 2012. When the facility opened to much fanfare and civic interest in 1972, the auditorium in particular was unlike anything seen in New Zealand before, Dr Lochhead explains. While Sir Miles Warren led the creative architectural team (establishing the reputation of Warren & Mahoney nationally), it was Sir Harold Marshall who was responsible for the world-class acoustics that changed the way concert halls around the world were designed from that point on. The quality of Marshall’s acoustic design attracted performers of the calibre of Leonard Bernstein, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Carlos Santana and, just last month, renowned cellist

YoYo Ma, and saw Christchurch recognised alongside the great concert halls of Vienna, Boston and Lucerne. The Philharmonie de Paris, which opened in 2015, took its design cues from the Christchurch Town Hall, to the extent that the French employed Marshall Day Acoustics, the practice established by Harold Marshall in 1981. The compelling story of the incredibly challenging restoration is recounted in chapters by Peter Marshall and John Hare and captured in photos by former UC photographer Duncan ShawBrown and by Olivia SpencerBower. UC returned to the Town Hall for its graduation ceremonies in 2019, one of many key Christchurch organisations to again use this much-loved space for their most important celebrations. The Christchurch Town Hall 1965–2019: A dream renewed, edited by Dr Ian Lochhead, is available now in hardback edition and online. www.canterbury.ac.nz/engage/cup/

T

he last year was one of steady evolution. There was the release of a Government Budget focused on wellbeing, as well as the announcement of a $7.5 billion surplus. There was also the reversal on the tabling of a capital gains tax. There were various changes to employment legislation, with Fair Pay Agreements one of the more highly publicised issues through the year. Immigration was also in the spotlight, with changes to employer-assisted temporary work visa settings. There were the local body elections, and the appointment of a new Chief Executive, which we hope will provide a fresh burst of energy for the council to gain traction on key issues and developments this year. In the education sector, the big news was the launch of the Reform of Vocational Education, which aims to encourage collaboration between the business community and education providers to ensure we have a fit-for-purpose future workforce. As we stride into the New Year, I think we will see more of these ‘big picture’ issues being addressed, largely driven by the 2020 general election. With low unemployment rates – and interest rates – and a housing market that is starting to turn, the economy may not be such a big issue and other key drivers, such as the future of work and climate change will really come to the fore. I look forward to a transformational year ahead and helping to shape Canterbury as a vibrant, dynamic region that supports local businesses and provides a strong quality of life and community outcomes for all.

I

love the fact it’s 2020! When applied to eyesight, 20/20 refers to clarity of vision and that is what I am sure the year 2020 will deliver to our city and region. I am hugely optimistic for what this year holds. Not only will we continue to see the benefits of private and public investment in our city, we will see major projects fully completed and others underway. Christchurch’s Convention Centre, Te Pae, will open in 2020 and what a difference that will make for the region as a whole. When I think of the conferences we will be hosting, I don’t just think about the delegates attending, I think of the extra days that they pack in on either side of the conference, the family they might bring along for the ride, or bring back after the conference when they’ve had a taste of what the region has to offer. And what about the American Airlines announcement that will connect North America and our region with Los Angeles to Christchurch direct flights three days a week? I am so grateful we have such an active airport company that continues to invest in building international connectivity. We will see the Metro Sports Facility starting to rise from the ground this year, and this will bring huge benefits, especially to the accommodation sector, due to the national events that will be held there. The signs of visible progress we will see this year will really help to restore confidence in what is the heart and soul of our city.

I

t’s not just the number of seats in the auditorium that the organisers of international conventions look at when selecting their next venue in a globally competitive sector. Transport, hospitality and quality of accommodation are also crucial in the decision-making process. So, it’s great for Christchurch that Ōtākaro recently secured a development agreement with the Carter Group for up to four hotels on the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre site, including one five-star hotel. A five-star hotel near the venue is a requirement for what are considered marquee international events. These sorts of events will help Te Pae Christchurch stimulate the nearly $100m worth of economic activity each year it’s estimated the city is currently missing out on. A five-star offering will certainly add a string to the marketing bow of our operator ASM Global, which now has 40 confirmed events and around another 120 interested in coming to Christchurch once Te Pae is open in October. Our agreement with the Carter Group also enables new developments by the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch to the north of Armagh St, along the Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct. This will allow this awardwinning Anchor Project to reach its full potential as a place for people. These new developments will use a third of the vacant private land in Christchurch’s CBD east of the Avon River and serve as a fantastic example of how Ōtākaro can meet its dual objectives of delivering both commercial and regenerative outcomes for the city.

T

his year marks a watershed moment for our city, our place, Ōtautahi Christchurch. There are few years I’ve been more excited for than 2020. We are emerging as the country’s premier urban destination, a basecamp for exploration and a hub of South Island adventure. Our rebuilt infrastructure is the envy of cities with worn out facilities, while our city is new, exciting and stronger than ever. In 2020, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre will open, set to be an absolute game-changer for the city centre and our ability to host major business events. We’re also excited about He Puna Taimoana, the hot pools development in New Brighton opening this year, which will bring a new energy to this beautiful white-sand beach just 15 minutes from the city centre. In May, we welcome the world’s tourism industry to the city at TRENZ, an incredible chance to showcase our new city to the world and we plan to leverage this in a big way. We also welcome the inaugural South Island Moon Festival in October, a new celebration of our links to China and the rest of Asia. ChristchurchNZ has come of age and in 2020 we’re hitting the ground running. We stand confidently as your gutsy economic development and city profile agency, with a deep commitment to serving the public interest, igniting bold ambition among our businesses, our people, and those visiting our beautiful home.

I

t’s hard to say goodbye to that most wonderful of things – the Kiwi summer holiday. In between the pavs and beach cricket this year, it was hard to miss the horror of the human and ecological tragedy unfolding in Australia giving us all a window into the impact of climate change. With the passing of the Zero Carbon amendment last year, New Zealand is taking a lead in the global charge against climate change. And Christchurch, with its aggressive goals of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, is a part of that charge. Behaviour change will certainly be required to hit these targets; innovation and technology breakthroughs will also be critical to their achievement. It’s encouraging then to note that Callaghan Innovation’s CPrize, a national innovation challenge, chose environmental sustainability as its 2020 challenge theme. Just as we broke for the holidays at the end of last year, 10 finalists were chosen from the national entries. A quick look at the teams show solutions in agriculture, waste management, packaging, and aquaculture – each driving sustainability across mega industries or individual behaviours. We’re very proud to count three of the 10 ventures are Christchurch-based including Radius Robotics who are part of the startup cohort at Te Ōhaka - Centre for Growth & Innovation. Miraculous innovations aside, we’re all facing an individual challenge in this battle. Our city’s carbon emissions break out thus: transportation 53 percent, stationary energy 23 percent, agriculture 11 percent, waste nine percent, and industry four percent. What can each of us do to reduce our own emissions?

T

here is a lot happening in our city and one of the key things that differentiates us from the suburban shopping centres, aside from our unique retail and hospitality offer, is our ability to activate the streets with events, festivals, buskers and street performances.

We are seeing new businesses opening every day filling in the gaps and progress has now reached tipping point.

From 23 January to 16 February our central city streets will be full of colour and spectacle. Building upon 25 years of history, the Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival will garner our streets providing a platform for a diverse range of local, national and international performers. This is an opportunity to experience some of the best street performances the world has to offer and to explore your new city. We are seeing new businesses opening every day filling in the gaps and progress has now reached tipping point. There are a lot of myths about how much parking we have in the city but to help break that myth, I can tell you we have way more parking than preearthquake with over 15,000 parking spaces available… and access is easy. See you there.

The Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, Paul Martin, says the adjoining community hub will involve the wider public in a variety of activities and provide much-needed social services. “It is my desire for the cathedral to be in the heart of the city, where our Catholic community can visit on a daily basis to pray and reflect, and for the church to be able to play a part in re-energising the life of the city.” The cathedral is expected to be able to accommodate up to 1000 people and could be completed by 2025. It is expected to cost $85 million for the Cathedral, $11 million for the primary school and $30 million for the diocesan share of the joint venture with the Carter Group for the pastoral centre, offices and clergy accommodation, plus the 600-vehicle carpark building. There is $45 million set aside from the earthquake insurance claim with the remaining funding to be met by both fundraising and the sale of excess property and assets.

Special Award The Special Award category was introduced last year to recognise outstanding projects or build elements. Highly worthy of this accolade, Urban Homes claimed this award for its home in Kaipaki, Cambridge. Tasked to create a home reminiscent of a DOC hut, hidden away on an idyllic riverside site, the judges said, “The unassuming yet sophisticated home has managed to blend its beauty appropriately with the neighbouring natural environment. “Both the consideration given to this project and the owners’ dedication to preserving the natural beauty of this site are absolutely commendable, and makes this home strongly deserving of this Special Award.” An additional 15 categories and four lifestyle awards were also announced and Registered Master Builders Chief Executive David Kelly says the organisation is proud to showcase the best of New Zealand residential buildings. “As the building boom continues, we must ensure our focus is on building quality homes, quickly and efficiently across all price brackets,” he says. “As New Zealand’s leaders in residential building, it is exciting to see innovative approaches coming through in the homes showcased at this year’s awards. This competition sets the standard of what is possible and is an inspiration to others across the sector.” The awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build 10-Year Guarantee, GIB, CARTERS, Plumbing World, Altus Window Systems, Resene and Bunnings Warehouse. Our country and our economy benefit significantly from the industry’s admirable work ethic. In light of big technology changes on the horizon and the shortfall of 80,000 new construction workers expected over the next five years, we need to ensure that the construction landscape is ready and resilient for what today and tomorrow bring. the funding decisions. The intent is that successful applicants will be selected and have funding agreements in place for CoVEs to commence establishment from mid-2020. There is $2.5 million of funding available per year, for up to five years, for each of the first two pilot CoVEs. While funding is for a defined period, it’s expected CoVEs will be an enduring part of the vocational education system. Each CoVE will include one of the new Workforce Development Councils; four to seven industry-governed bodies that will take a skills leadership role working with both the industry and providers to ensure the right type of qualifications and programmes are in place. A series of thought-provoking workshops and webinars were recently held to discuss the potential scope and functions of CoVEs. Approximately 170 stakeholders from the primary and construction sectors were involved, including representatives from industry groups, peak bodies, iwi, institutes of technology and polytechnics, Industry Training Organisations, wānanga, private training establishments, schools and universities, employers, unions, the institute’s establishment board, and government agencies. A summary of findings and new Q&As from the workshops and webinars are now live on the TEC website. If you are interested in the RoI process, visit their website. www.tec.govt.nz/coves

Vocational Education is underway; the biggest change to vocational education in 25 years. During extensive engagement and consultation this year, New Zealanders told us they agree that we need a strong, unified and sustainable vocational education system fit for the future of work and capable of delivering the skills learners, employers and communities need to thrive. An important part of the reform is the Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs). A CoVE is a consortium of industry groups, subject matter experts, researchers and regional representatives from across a sector who collaborate to support the growth of excellent vocational education provision and sharing of high-quality curriculum and programme design across the vocational education system. In August 2019, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced the first two pilot CoVEs – primary and construction. The Government will set the general parameters for these CoVEs while the specific design, functions and detailed subject matter will be determined by members of the successful consortia who will be chosen through a selection process starting with a Registration of Interest (RoI). Consortium applications will be assessed by an independent evaluation panel made up of industry experts in the relevant sectors. The panel will provide recommendations to the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Board who make

Vietnamese mint Not your common garden-variety mint – this unmistakable and quite addictive flavour will wow the tastebuds of Vietnamese foodie fans.

Designer delectables for the garden By Tracey Edwardes

Parsley, sage rosemary and thyme, as the Simon and Garfunkel song goes, reminds us of our cherished common gardenvariety herbs. However, here are a bunch of some quirkier edibles to grow, that once savoured will become seasoning staples. Hunt them out at garden centres and farmers’ markets this summer.

Rocket Move over lettuce, wild rocket will really take off in the garden. Keep picking it so it doesn’t go to seed. The delicate summery leaves will add pizazz to a salad, or a peppery twist piled upon a pizza or any savoury dish. Borage The gorgeous blue flowers are beloved by bees, and these delicately flavoured blooms will take plating presentation to the next level. Add to ice cubes for star-shaped cool colour. French tarragon This requires a little tender loving care, but the unmistakable elegant flavour transports a dish straight to the South of France. Lemongrass No need to rush out for Thai takeaways if there is lemongrass in the garden. This is piquancy plus. Add boiling water to the stems for a healthy herbal tea – refreshing either hot or iced. Horopito This native bush’s red-tinged leaves have medicinal and tongue-tingling culinary uses. Dry them and sprinkle on dishes for some zing – a great chilli alternative.

ore and more people are installing the lawns, surfaces for outdoor play areas, and even personalised golf putting greens that provide the look of green space, but require none of the care and preparation. GrassPro has transformed the way we view ‘fake grass’ and is becoming a popular landscaping

alternative for gardeners worldwide. Christchurch GrassPro operator Tim Gerard specialises in installing the product at townhouses, apartments, over 60s units, or smaller areas that are causing a nuisance for homeowners. The company can supply and

install a range of specialist synthetic landscaping grasses to suit your taste and requirements. All grasses are UV stable, include no nasty chemicals or heavy metals, and are guaranteed for seven years. GrassPro can also install the product at early childhood

They’ve also combined landscaping grass with a specialist golf putting green grass to create the perfect green for every golfer.
