More than a feeling
Among the simple pleasures in life, being tactile is high on my list. It costs nothing, yet brings pleasure in so many ways. I’m talking about giving someone a hug,

or a pat on the back, wrapping your hand around a cold glass of bubbly, and trying on clothes in a local boutique. Researchers have found that tactile experiences can stimulate areas of the brain involved in sensory processing and cognitive function.
That’s all great, however I’m talking about the buzz, the pleasure, the satisfaction that comes from physical touch.
Actually touching or holding something increases levels of dopamine and serotonin, two neurotransmitters that help regulate the brain’s pleasure centre, and your mood. That’s part of the scientific explanation, however for many it is just about doing things that make you and others feel good.

the girls, a blokes’ fishing trip, or reading your Metropol magazine in front of a warm fire, all bring tangible, tactile pleasure. The same cannot be said for some experiences, such as online fashion shopping. I know women whose drawers are full of garments bought online, unwanted because they don’t fit, aren’t properly made, or not what they wanted. Many don’t bother to send them back so, tags intact, they end up in op shops or find their way into unsanctioned landfills such as Chile’s Atacama Desert.
Actually venturing out, into a boutique (or five) and physically trying something on is usually highly pleasurable for the buyer and the seller. Check out the following pages for some our top fashion retailers.

Chef Simon Levy is not only a long way from home, he is a long way from the 13-year-old boy who worked London’s Harringay market stall with his father. Metropol writer Céline Gibson recently caught up with the 2024 Hospitality Awards finalist.
Now founder and executive chef of Christchurch’s
Inati restaurant, Simon is a finalist in the hospitality awards Outstanding Chef, and Outstanding Wine & Beverage List categories.
That’s partly thanks to his teenage years, and his initial interest in cooking, and great work ethic.
“My first work experience was at the Fire Station restaurant in Waterloo, for which I was paid £120. The wages didn’t cover all the tube travel, but it didn’t matter. I loved it.”
From small beginnings, big things can happen, and for Simon, it was progressing from the Fire Station to Claridges and then to The Ivy.
“I really learnt my craft at The Ivy. Everything I thought I knew before then, I realised I didn’t know.”
Next up were four years at Rules, where he met his wife-tobe, New Zealand-born Lisa, a human resources manager.
Rules had been out of the British Good Food Guide for 11 years, and part of Simon’s contract was to restore its name in the guide. “We did it in the first 18 months and got fantastic ratings.”
A move to the Admiral Coddington eventually segued into a chef position at The Warrington Hotel.
Simon recalls his first meeting with its owner, Gordon Ramsay.
“You get butterflies meeting somebody of his stature. We started talking – it was like I’d known him for years. It was a great experience working for Ramsay. That starts your journey as well. The journey and the experience, because that’s how I learnt – how we all learnt.”
After two years at The Warrington, Simon worked with restaurant legend
Pierre Ko man (whose protégés include Ramsay and Marco Pierre White) at Ko man’s in The Berkeley Hotel, and following that, Simon opened the iconic Isle of Wight restaurant, The Hut. It was here that Simon created a
burger that became so popular, its fame spread to major United Kingdom newspapers, The Independent, and The Times. By now, Simon and Lisa had moved to New Zealand; the family arriving at Christmas 2013.
Not one to sit around, Simon worked at Pegasus Bay Winery on the odd occasion, followed by two years at The Harlequin, the latter being awarded one Hat (as prestigious as Michelin stars) in the Cuisine Good Food Guide during Simon’s tenure.
Inati opened for business on 5 July, 2017, and recently celebrated its seventh birthday. Simon says it has been a hard-earned labour of love.
Inati is a Māori word that means “to share a portion of food or to be exceptional and exciting”. And that is what Simon and Lisa strive to deliver.
“We want people to come and experience a great night out - to feel welcomed, that when they’re here, they have left their troubles behind.”
Simon describes the cuisine as Modern European; its tapas style comes from his desire to replicate what we all grew up with. “That sitting around the family table, having good conversation. The concept of sharing food is so popular now.”
Simon says alongside their focus on delivering an incredible experience is to challenge people’s ideas around food.
“For me, breaking down those barriers at the beginning of the meal, we’ve already formed a bond and a relationship to start that conversation going, which can only add another layer to the experience.”
Inati has been awarded two Hats in the past four years, the ultimate proof that the young teen who worked the London markets with his dad all those years ago, truly has come a long, long way.
Questioning her own sense of self convinced realism painter Anna Gibbs to escape London life and settle in Banks Peninsula. The rising star shares her story of success, motherhood, and creating captivating artworks to promote native birdlife conservation with Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker.
Anna was born in London and grew up in various places across the south of England and the United States, embedded in art. “I have always had a compulsion to be creative and my passion for making art is a core part of who I am. I don’t think I would be able to repress it, even if I wanted to.” In whatever she did, there was creativity. Every piece had a purpose, “to evoke a significant and positive emotional response in those that stand in front of it”.
Upon finishing school, Anna had to choose between Art College or the coveted Oxford University, choosing the latter which “provided a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore deep philosophical questions”. She continued to refine her skills at Oxford’s Ruskin School of Art. Like many in the arts industry, Anna had to search for a ‘proper job’ after finishing university. She took up teaching, which allowed school holidays to continue her creative passions, painting in the communal spaces of the house she lived in with others at the time.
“My poor housemates would have to lift my paintings o the oven to use it, but I think they did find my enthusiasm infectious,” she remembers. It seems she found her happily ever after, fulfilling the dream of becoming a full-time artist after such time in the trenches.
“The financial barriers were significant and daunting, and it was di cult to give it enough of my attention to find my ‘voice’ as an artist,” Anna explains. After selling the odd piece to friends and colleagues, the dream crept within reach. She sought a slower life, a rural one where she could raise a family and use art for something meaningful, moving to Banks Peninsula, where she’s “so much happier” now. It “made sense” to change her entire lifestyle, “I was able to see an avenue here in New Zealand where I could potentially make it work,” she says. They moved to a lifestyle block, with no signal and an unreliable landline. “When there was a power cut, your only form of communication was physically going to see someone,” she laughs.
message. Criticism propelled her further, “to communicate better the importance of protecting these unique species and why that is so valuable and in critical need of our attention,” Anna explains.
A leader in what is becoming a growing area of art globally, Anna’s conservation e orts are visible in every piece and through the opportunities she has had to visit nesting sites and sanctuaries. “I use my paintings as a platform to inspire and educate people about the importance of native species, primarily birds, and aim to make the audience connect with and see the value of them.”
She’s found so much more meaning and reward in creative conservation work than those arbitrary goals as a Londoner, where a sense of achievement came from “social status and materialistic aims. I don’t think concentrating on those things was bringing me joy. I am so fulfilled now totally immersed in creating every day, surrounded by nature.”
Such a day in her life now looks like breakfast shared as a family, and a day’s work spent in the studio, with several pieces on the go. She will squeeze in a lunch break and perhaps a walk with their dog. Each night ends spoilt by her husband with a delicious home-cooked family meal. Living on a lifestyle block, overlooking a lush valley and the sea, in a zone that the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust is working to make ‘predator-free’, is her obvious ‘happy place’.
“I remember doing the maths once in the early days and working out I was earning less than $2 an hour for a painting.”
A slice of paradise filled with regenerative bush and native birdlife, the perfect backdrop and unmatched inspiration for her art.
Inspiration is Anna’s favourite part of creating, and it spurs from anywhere. A painting of a tūī feeding on red hot poker flowers came from “observing how sunlight goes through dried grass in the summer and creates a golden glow like the background of my paintings. The striking colour of the flowers with the tūī feeding on them, set against the golden grass, was so captivating I felt compelled to translate it into an artwork,” she says.
Anna gained an apprenticeship with Judy Curnow, who trained under the late and great Kiwi landscape artist Tim Wilson. Doors opened, and Anna soon found herself exhibiting countrywide.
The road as a self-employed creative is an unnerving one to walk. “Half the battle is building up a solid base of confidence in yourself, what you are making, and what you are saying,” she tells me. From selling out a collection in her very first gallery exhibition to winning the Premium Artist Award at Auckland’s 2023 Art in the Park exhibition for Kākāpō in the Forest, which raised both awareness and funds for the endangered bird, Anna has achieved many feats.
Resilience and persistence are what she says kept her from “throwing in the towel”. “You have to spend so much time creating work and then put in so much e ort to get anyone to look at it, let alone pay you enough to generate a profit on that artwork,” she reflects. “I remember doing the maths once in the early days and working out I was earning less than $2 an hour for a painting.” It was a sacrifice she was willing to make to do what she loved.
With such a commitment to the conservation of native birds, it was “soul-crushing” each time someone could not connect with the deeper meaning. She gained a sense of conviction in her
With her second child imminent at the time of writing, Anna often thanks her rural o -grid environment for giving her the time and space to nurture her children. She calls motherhood and conservation the “cornerstones” of her identity. “Acknowledging and confronting some of the damage that we’ve done as current and past generations, and playing a small part in improving the future of our planet and our children’s lives, is rewarding and grounding.”
See Anna’s solo exhibition from 30 January to 24 February 2025 at The Little River Gallery, where each piece is set to sell fast, following commissions and new pieces withheld for months to focus solely on this collection.

OART WITH PURPOSE
ne local gallery has established itself as a cornerstone of Canterbury’s community arts scene.
As well as o ering professional and individualised fine arts tuition, Art Metro is currently displaying a series of stunning works by two of their tutors, Malene Laugesen and Veronique Lambert.
Danish-born Malene’s work draws on her background as an animator and illustrator. In her Midnight Mall series, melancholy colour palettes and an exquisite delicate touch help to reframe familiar architectural environments with a distant, dream-like quality.
The paintings of French-New Zealander Veronique, contrarily,
explore the shifts in colour and light seen in the world around us. With a particular interest in seascapes and motion, her work captures moments of transition, richly rendered in oil and acrylic.
The Platform @ Art Metro also helps to grow the Ōtautahi arts community, with 10% of sales going toward holiday art programs for children from local schools who otherwise wouldn’t be able to a ord it. It’s a win-win, an exhibition with stunning artworks and a beautiful kaupapa behind them.

30 JUL - 16 AUG 2024
Polly Gilroy embraces the point of transition between sculpture and painting, binding the two through multi-faceted structures which glow in changing light.
Gilroy’s silk stretched ‘paintings’ present deceptively minimal compositions in which carefully considered colours push and pull spatial depth. These works have an illusory quality yet speak honestly to their materiality and construction. They are subtle and sophisticated, bringing shadow and light changes into the viewing experience. Nailing necklines
BY NINA TUCKER
The work of a neckline is to showcase, or not, your neck, shoulders, and collarbones.
Di erent necklines drop in and out of fashion each year, and many move in parallel with the seasons. Each one does a di erent job of flattery. Taking neckline into consideration when buying a garment does not feel overly pivotal, yet may give you that subtle style boost you need.
Balance out a look, or body part you’re insecure of, with the right neckline. Bring purpose into your thought process, such as whether you are heading to a business meeting or date-night dinner, and look to the weather, where a turtleneck might come in handy.
Not just round necklines, there are boat, scoop, and crew styles. With v-necks, the commonly more slimming style, there are then deep v-necks, split necks, and shawl styles. More than 20 more alternatives make each one an opportunity to use necklines to your advantage. Often, the styles lend themselves to certain occasions, and you will likely find more cowl neck styles in evening wear, or round necklines for workwear.
Neckline hacks
• Choose a v-neckline if you have a shorter neck or bigger bust.
• Incorporate boat neck styles for a smaller bust or pear-shaped frame.
• Consider the necklaces and earrings styled with certain necklines, and enhance or pare back as necessary.
• Flatter narrow shoulders with square necklines.

A love ofnatural bres
A wish to embrace the beauty of natural fibres sparked the invention of one unique boutique, which is renowned for its colour palettes, styles, and a classic, timeless look.
As an interior designer, Wendy Giltrap always knew the importance of colour and natural fibres. “We love living with them, why are we not wearing them.” With her partner Vance Gemmell, they turned the interior o ce into the first OFI natural fibre boutique in Havelock-North. That’s how the OFI story began 10 years ago. Soon after the outstanding response, three more boutiques opened in Napier, Cambridge & Christchurch.
The unique colours of the OFI range stems from Wendy’s interior design background, “The natural love for the art of colour”. “For our lovely customers, we invest in quality natural fibres, such as linen, cotton, cashmere/silk, from European designers.” Ethical labels and processes are valued, “From the first stages of production to the marketing of the products we use,” they say.
Promoting diversity and inclusiveness, the in-store experience is personalised, genuine, and empathetic with body stylising.
“Our customers have become extended friends of our OFI team,” Wendy says. The loyalty of customers and proof of the product are demonstrated by the fact that most customers’ wardrobes are 80% OFI, the pair say. “We feel rewarded to know our customers get as much satisfaction as we do with their purchases and their OFI boutique experience.”

OPEN YOUR EYES
Maintaining a youthful appearance that can fit in with a busy work and social calendar is a hard task. Dr Brigid Lee and Denise Prosser from the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic are always being asked what the latest and most effective treatments are to help.
Dr Brigid says one of the most common requests they get is from clients who are sick of being told they “look tired”. One of the reasons people can look tired, says Dr Brigid, is due to the area around the eyes being one of the first to show the early signs of ageing with fine lines, wrinkles and loose, sagging skin.
Luckily, there are lots of safe and non-invasive treatment options to rejuvenate this delicate
area available at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. One of their favourite machines to treat this area is Ulthera which uses high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to deliver energy into the tissue below the skin. This causes the tissue to tighten leaving the area around the eyes looking smoother and tighter with a lift to the upper eyelids and a reduction of under eye bags. Only one treatment is needed, and it is FDA approved. Check out this month’s special below.

e snail trail
Snail mucin is considered a wonder beauty treatment by many who have embraced its use, backed by various laboratory studies.
Because snail mucin is packed with hyaluronic acid, research has shown its use can benefit cell cultures, possibly enhancing collagen and elastin production. Claims include that its antioxidants help to reduce signs of aging such as wrinkles, uneven skin tone and sagging, help with skin regeneration, and protect against damaging free radicals.
Snail mucin is the clear, sticky slime or mucus, left behind when a gastropod moves across a surface. Snails can produce di erent types of mucin for di erent purposes. For example, the mucin from a snail’s foot helps the snail lubricate its path and stick to surfaces. It’s what allows the snail to travel upside down.
The mucus from a snail’s back has been found to be hydrating and antimicrobial — both properties of interest to the skin care industry. The mucin creates a protective barrier that keeps germs out to prevent infection.
Snail mucins are also used in medicine, for example to help with wound healing and infections after surgery.
FACT
On a chemical level, snail mucin contains several compounds that may o er potential skin care benefits. Collagen and elastin: Natural proteins that form the connective tissues in the body. Collagen promotes skin strength, while elastin provides skin elasticity.

Are New Zealand-made lenses as good as imported products?
Are New Zealand-made lenses as good as imported products?
Absolutely, the team at ILS (Independent Lens Specialists) say. Often, they are even better. There is one remaining optical laboratory in New Zealand, based right here in Christchurch. Through a strategic partnership with Shamir, a world leader in lens design, independent optometrists can provide locally made spectacle lenses featuring Shamir’s cutting-edge designs.
Are locally made lenses more expensive?
It’s a common question. While chain stores may advertise low prices, hidden upgrade costs can make the final price much higher. Independent optometrists have the freedom to select lenses that best suit your visual needs, ensuring excellent value for your money and avoiding outdated technology that can lead to poor adaptation. Independent optometrists understand the importance of speed and urgency. With the laboratory local, they can prepare spectacle lenses, including progressive and anti-reflective coatings, in just three days. For urgent cases, your lenses can be ready in one day. This level of service and responsiveness is something chain stores simply cannot match.
Experience the di erence with an independent practice, where your vision and satisfaction are the top priorities. Ask for New Zealand-made lenses and discover the benefits of independent optometrists. Make the smart choice for your eye care needs today.
Glycolic acid: An exfoliant often used to remove layers of dead skin and curb hyperpigmentation.
Allantoin: An organic compound that moisturises the skin, may have anti-inflammatory e ects, and promote wound healing.
When it comes to your eye care, choosing the right optometrist is crucial. Independent optometrists, unlike chain stores bound by franchise agreements, have the freedom to make choices that prioritise your needs.

Coping with miscarriage
Miscarriage is one of those topics that people run away from – it’s big, it’s hard, it’s sad, and it’s scary.
Miscarriage a ects a huge number of people in this country, ending between 10-20% of the 60,000 pregnancies per year in New Zealand. As many as 30 women and their families are a ected every single day.
Thanks to the e orts of two North Canterbury sisters, hundreds of New Zealanders who have su ered miscarriages are now being supported, with fundraising through an annual “Butterfly Run”.
Founded by Aleisha Black and Corrine Christian, Miscarriage Matters NZ (MMNZ) is the only charity of its kind making information about miscarriage easy to find, and in one thoughtfully collated place.
To date, the organisation has supported more than 5000 families who have experienced miscarriages. It sends out over 100 care packages each month across Christchurch, the West Coast, Timaru, Auckland (North Shore), and Wellington.
More regions are soon to join its cause.
With knowledge, comes power, Corrine says. “Miscarriage Matters NZ is a place for women, their whānau, and their supporters to understand more about what miscarriage is and how to support it.
“What we’ve found out as we’ve talked to more and more people is that just like a live birth, every miscarriage is quite di erent. Our website, resources, and care packages are there to accommodate that and make sure all women feel informed and supported.”
The Butterfly Fun Run is the charity’s annual opportunity for people to come together, remember, and run (or walk) 6km around The Groynes in Christchurch. People outside of Christchurch can purchase a virtual ticket and do their own 6km run or walk.
“It gives people the chance to have a moment to think about a loss, whether it is from five or 50 years ago,” Aleisha adds.
MMNZ will be holding its 5th annual Butterfly Fun Run on Sunday 13 October.
Run or walk a fabulous 6km loop track at The Groynes, Christchurch for Baby Loss Awareness Week.

excellence IMAGING
Whenever the need arises for medical imaging, it is reassuring to know we have access to technology that is as cutting-edge as possible.
New Zealand-owned and clinicianled Beyond Radiology use the latest state-of-the-art imaging technology. The clinic has a complete suite of imaging modalities including x-ray, CT, ultrasound and MRI, with the latest technologically advanced scanners.
These utilise some of the most up-todate artificial intelligence technology, allowing for reduced scan time and premier imaging quality. This technology o ers exceptional definition, e ciency and speed. Yet, machines can only do so much, it is the eyes and experience of both the healthcare team and specialists who pin-point the answers, giving clear, e cient outcomes.
The healthcare team consistently deliver exceptional standards of excellence on every level, with an empathetic approach
that sees a thorough consultation and step-by-step guidance with patients.
A recent addition to the friendly and welcoming team is radiologist Dr Samer Naser. Having trained in Germany, with subspecialist interests in emergency, MSK, neuro, body, vascular, and oncology imaging/interventional procedures, Dr Naser is onsite daily o ering his skills.
Another imaging service provided here is the CT Calcium score scan. This specialised CT technique utilises high speed and high-resolution images in order to detect calcium deposits in the plaques, which can build up in the arteries of the heart (coronary arteries that supply the heart).
The more calcium detected in coronary arteries, the higher the risk of heart disease.
The CT Calcium score scan is a relatively simple imaging process that takes less than 15 minutes.
Ultrasound and x-ray are now also available by appointment at Dudley Creek Health in Christchurch, thanks to the Beyond Radiology team.
Convenience is something that is taken into account and recognised by Beyond Radiology, so its walk-in x-ray service is proving a winner with timepressed patients. Walk-in x-rays can be accessed at 225 Papanui Road, Merivale, Christchurch. Take advantage of the free patient parking via the Leinster Road entrance.

NOURISHING MIND, BODY & SOUL
e pleasure of a compliment
Not everyone enjoys receiving a compliment. Often that is because they’re shy, embarrassed, want to downplay it, or just unsure how to gracefully receive it.
Researchers have found several awkward ways in which people typically react to compliments. One of these is rejecting it by directly contradicting the compliment giver. An example is being complimented for work on a project, and replying that you didn’t really do anything. Downplaying a compliment, “this old thing”, in response to a cute dress is another.
People with low self-esteem often struggle to accept a compliment, as do some who have high self-esteem yet are unsure of their own capabilities.
Thank you
Saying thanks is the simplest and often the best way to accept a compliment. Here are three steps to receiving them gracefully.
Pause: You might be tempted to interrupt the compliment giver even before he/she completes speaking due to the discomfort you’re experiencing. Control the urge to brush o their words before they’re done. Pause.
Absorb: Take in the compliment you just received. Give yourself a millisecond to do a tiny happy dance in your brain. When you allow yourself to wholly take in the compliment, your body language will automatically change. You may nod, smile or do a little dance. Your body language will show the person that they’ve had a positive impact on you.
Acknowledge: A simple “thank you” works as the perfect response to a compliment. You could also acknowledge the compliment in other words that basically serve to thank the person, for example, “It made my day.” If you’d like to add more, do so after you’ve acknowledged the compliment. For example, if you’ve received a compliment for what was a team e ort, you could first say thanks and then go on to mention your team. This way, you’re accepting the compliment while sharing credit.

Olympics Hosting an viewing party
Exchange mundane dinner dates with friends and family for a night of sporting excitement and thrills.
Delicious French-inspired food and leave-it-all-out-there sport, that is the energy to expect at any Olympics viewing party. The iconic sporting event is an ideal opportunity to ditch the winter blues and reconnect with family and friends in an exhilarating way.
Create your hosting space by setting up a comfortable viewing area, with ample seating. Bring a taste of the Olympics to the space through competitions to engage your guests, such as best dressed, most passionate fan, or sweepstakes on di erent events.
Award medals to the winners, and take photos to remember the fun. Set the mood with decorations and snacks that symbolise the Olympics.
Podium plates
For your guests, create eats worthy of a medal.
Easy nibbles
Organise five ceramic bowls on a platter as the Olympic rings. Fill them with dips and spreads such as guacamole, cheese sauce, hummus, salsa, and the classic Kiwi onion dip. Surround the bowls with a mix of healthy and indulgent eats. These could be carrots, celery, and capsicum sticks, plus pretzels, chips and crackers of your choice, a selection of meat, and a French baguette to stick to the theme.
A bigger meal
For a more filling snack, look to French-inspired cuisine. The croissant is as much of an icon in France as the Olympics is to sport. With a croissant bar, guests can help themselves and craft a customised croissant in between events, races, and games as they wish. Crisp, flaky, and golden brown, with a punch of butter and a hint of sweet, these delicious morsels are wonderful for an Olympic viewing party, especially if you are hosting at breakfast time.
For those with a sweet tooth, o er toppings such as chocolate spread, jams, cream, and butter, while ham, salami, spinach, tomato, and a selection of cheeses work well for savoury options. If you have the time and energy, fry up some eggs too. Make sure the croissants are warm, and you have provided enough cutlery to serve and enjoy.
From the French-born Magimix, this delicious salmon quiche is a crowd-pleaser. The ease of the blender makes for stress-free, easily preparable eats. Filled with flavour, this quiche is soft and creamy and works well for lunch or dinner hosting parties. Find the recipe at magimix.com.au or create your own Olympic-inspired interpretation.

A taste of Taiwan
When Amber Huang and fully qualified chef
Don Cheng opened their Ashburton restaurant seven years ago, they had little business experience.
Today, that same restaurant boasts the kind of patronage that necessitates booking 24 hours in advance to secure a table.
Formosa draws the crowds with a magnetic-like attraction, all vying to experience for themselves this unsurpassable Asian fusion cuisine.
Taiwanese food embraces a diverse range of wholesome ingredients, ensuring a wellbalanced diet and significant intake of essential nutrients.
“We pride ourselves on the strong symbiotic connections forged with local Canterbury suppliers.”
“Creating contemporary dishes of delicious food sourced from fresh, quality
produce is a major component to our success,” Amber says.
Three private dining spaces, the dining room; the Chinese Lantern room (seats 20 guests maximum), and the Red Parasol drinks area (seats 50 guests maximum), provide plenty of group booking options.
“Each dining area brings its own unique atmosphere, so whether an intimate dinner, a smaller function, a family celebration, or a large corporate event – every need is catered for.”

Dreaming of
Mykonos
Dream of the Greek island of Mykonos and you will have visions of whitewashed streets lined with bright bougainvilleas. Add in great ethnic food and this is truly an Aegean gem.
How could something like that possibly be re-imagined in Christchurch?
Enter Panos Bougos. He and his family have created a little slice of the enchanting beauty of the Greek islands, nestled in the heart of Riccarton.
Their café and bakery, naturally named Mykonos, was born from a passion for homemade Greek cuisine and for the warm hospitality the islands are known for. Originally taught to make Greek food by his grandmother, Panos came to New Zealand 12 years ago, studied cooking and baking here, and always dreamed of providing authentic Greek appetisers and pastries to the people of Christchurch.
That dream came true in August 2023 with the opening of Mykonos Cafe.

Wonderful winter veges
Just as restaurants change their menus seasonally, so too can you, making the most of those vegetables that are plentiful at the time. A bonus is that produce is usually cheapest when it is at its most abundant.
In winter, it is essential to gain as many nutrients as possible from what we eat, to help boost our immune system and combat colds and flu. It also helps to give our digestive systems a break from raw foods such as salads. Opt instead for lightly steaming or sautéing your vegetables, and using them in soups, stews, roasting them or putting them in a slow cooker.
As darkness falls, at Pegasus, the glamour of our Moonlight Bar is ignited; enter a world of intricate flavours from an assortment of delectable tapas and exquisitely prepared mixology. Moonlight Bar’s tapas menu has a variety of tasty bites for sharing and pairing with their unique beverages. Prepare for a night of sumptuous food and local wines. Ideal for functions, it can be booked for business events, celebrations, and more.

Charred broccolini with parmesan and pine nuts
Take the humble broccoli and cheese sauce side plate up a notch with this quick, easy, and full-of-flavour dish.
Just four main ingredients bring it together.
Mouthwatering parmesan cheese and the buttery distinct notes of pine nuts, paired with the sharp aromas of garlic is a delicious combination. Add to that the chargrilled, savoury taste of charred broccolini, and you are serving complete umami. This flavour profile is something else. Something so simple, that takes little time to prepare and comes with the flavours of dining at a five-star restaurant, is exactly the side dish to have up your sleeve for winter nights and hosting parties.
INGREDIENTS
2-3 bunches broccolini, depending on servings required
4 sliced garlic cloves
1/4 cup pine nuts
1/3 cup grated parmesan
1 Tbsp olive oil
METHOD
Wash and dry the broccolini.
To medium-high heat on a non-stick pan, fry pine nuts until slightly coloured and put aside.
To the same pan, add one tablespoon of olive oil and cook broccolini until tender and charred to your liking.
Push aside the broccolini and add garlic to the pan, cooking until fragrant.
Transfer cooked broccolini and garlic to a serving dish and sprinkle with previously prepared pine nuts and parmesan. Enjoy hot.

Gaelic charm, food & music
Irish myths and leprechaun legends often refer to a pot o’ gold at the end of a rainbow.
Christchurch City isn’t home to many leprechauns (unless it’s St Patrick’s Day), yet it definitely has a pot of gold in the form of The Little Fiddle, an inner city Irish bar.
The lilt of Irish laughter often filters through its walls, while inside it’s filled with music, fun and fabulous food to wash down with beer, wine, and a good Irish whiskey or two.
Chef Santosh has been at The Little Fiddle since it opened six years ago, and publican Mel Ling says his food just keeps getting better and better.
“It’s pub grub while at the same time being much more. We have regulars who come in just for our bangers and mash,” she explains.
The popular menu includes small plates, platters, burgers, salads, house classics, the famous “Fiddle Roast”, and desserts.
Spicy chicken wings, crispy fish bites (in tempura batter), pork belly bites, sliders, and Irish potato skins are all on the small plates menu, to enjoy on your own or in a group.
Savour classic treats such as a full Irish breakfast, Guinness Beef and Mushroom Pot Pie, and traditional Irish Stew, to name some firm favourites. Snacks, lunch, and dinner bring forth even more tempting o erings, while the beverage list includes 60 plus whiskeys from around the world. For the non-whiskey drinkers, there’s a great selection of red, white, bubbly, and low alcohol wines, boutique beers, and cider to wet your whistle.
The cosy interior vibe is wholly reminiscent of a pub in Ireland, thanks to Mel’s husband (and business partner).
“Craig designs and has the pubs built, then hands me the keys to run them,” laughs Mel. Craig’s an O’Carroll, known for drinking establishments of that name previously in Christchurch and Auckland.
Together, the couple have worked the bar scene not just in New Zealand, but also in Las Vegas, the Cayman Islands and elsewhere around the world.
“We now call Christchurch home, and have done for the last six years,” says Mel. “We love it here.”
They love it so much, that Craig is well underway with his latest design and build project. No surprise it’s another Irish bar in central Christchurch, so keep your fiddle tuned. Cheers, or as the Irish say: Sláinte.
SAVE THE DATE
The Little Fiddle’s sister establishment, The Whiskey Fiddle will be opening in the inner city in September this year. In the meantime if Irish cheer and a dram or two is your thing, call into The Little Fiddle at 132 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch Central City, thelittlefiddle.co.nz
home & living
living HUMBLE
BY NINA TUCKER
Being humble means having humility, upholding modesty, and living without an ego.
By no means is it achieving less, or performing poorly. What if you were to embrace this concept in your home?
Humble living embodies the meaning of the word: creating a concept of décor and styling within your home that is genuine, meaningful, and no less beautiful. It is something I find increasingly front of mind as I continue to decorate my own home.
Just as in fashion, sometimes it feels like there is a new trend in homewares each week. It can be overwhelming to know which styles and designs you truly love, and which are going to look out of place. So, before you jump into the latest homewares hitting shelves, be it Art Deco or minimalist décor, consider if such a style can exist in your home naturally.
Creating a space that is grand in a quiet way is a hard skill to master, sometimes it takes time to gather all the pieces that make your home what it is.
Don’t overthink it
Utilise your space, collecting artwork and décor that suits the energy your home has, instead of trying to make each piece fit your home. For some, less is not best. Consider sustainability, and how you can make choices that benefit the environment in your own way. Most of the time, the pieces about your home should ‘work’. If you find yourself buying new pieces to suit another or an onerous amount of time styling them, it may be time to step back and wait for the things you love to jump out at you.
Invest in your personal style
Avoid trends, unless it was something you loved before it became trendy. If something catches your eye online or when visiting someone else, give it time before rushing to the store. When taken out of an environment of complete cohesion, would that piece still look as beautiful? Go for quality over quantity, purchasing pieces here and there that will stand the test of time, both in appearance and craftsmanship.

Millions of eyes are on Europe, and the Olympic Games in Paris, as the world’s top athletes compete for gold, silver and bronze glory.
Metallics are also prominent in European design trends currently, especially gold, as accents, and stunning focal pieces.
One of Europe’s top breeding grounds for design ideas and creativity is the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile, held in Milan each April. Many Kiwi business owners and designers visit the trade fair annually, for inspiration from the wide range of furnishing products.
Many prototypes and innovations in terms of furnishings, domestic spaces and lifestyles are launched, exploring how the way we live is changing and, consequently, home living and furnishing.
Top trends in 2024 included metallics, featuring shiny aluminium, chrome, stainless steel, gold, and reflective surfaces, all things marble, and unique conversation pieces.
Here are some ideas, based on luxurious European trends. You might have to look hard to find a gold bath, but high-end companies can order them in from overseas, and can also arrange colour customisation.

Adding WOW to family treasures
Sustainability is uppermost in many people’s minds these days, and furniture is one area when it can be put to good use.
Instead of buying new, think about refurbishing instead. Many older pieces of furniture have good bones and/or sentimental value, they just need freshening up to add a “wow” factor.
Christchurch resident Danielle thought likewise when coming across a chair and footstool that belonged to her fiancé John’s mother Veda, for many years.
“When she passed, both pieces stayed with John as he is the only member of his immediate family remaining,” says Danielle.
“When we bought our house together late last year, I decided to surprise John and have them given some much deserved “TLC” to keep them in the best condition. Now, they will remain in the family and one day be passed to the next generation,” she adds.
Danielle headed along to leading furniture and upholstery business McDonald & Hartshorne, which excels in the repair and restoration of tired, worn furniture, to spring her surprise.
She selected the Warwick Borchelli range, design: Capitano, colour: Onyx for the new upholstery. “I was attracted to the timeless design and colour of the fabric, and felt having the timber restored and polished in ebony highlights its classic style.”
Established in 2004, McDonald & Hartshorne are experts at breathing new life into old furniture.
Customers can simply email a photo of the item to the o ce for evaluation, then discuss their vision with business Co-director and Sales Manager, Keith Hartshorne, at a follow-up consultation.
Keith brings his years of experience in the furniture and upholstery industry to every job, and being the first point of contact, customers are assured they have all the information they need as to their repair requirements.
Co-director, Steve McDonald, is the expert upholsterer behind the business and he, along with his experienced and qualified team, love the small repair jobs just as much as the larger projects.
Another service available here is help with furniture insurance claims. This straight forward process usually sees Keith visiting the customer’s home to assess the piece before giving his insurance quote.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, Abarth introduced its new “Offshore” model at the prestigious Top Marques Monaco 2024 event in June.
Presented by Car O Shore, this zippy wee car/boat (pictured in action) captures Abarth’s signature traits with a striking metallic-green body and powerful performance boasting 230Hp and Riva racing exhausts.
Based on the iconic Fiat 500, it’s limited to just 500 customisable units, and designed for those who crave a unique and sporty sailing experience. A collaboration between Centro Stile Fiat and Abarth, the boat carries up to five people, and features an iridescent metallic-green exterior, dark hazelnut detailing, and a sophisticated interior with ergonomic, quilted leather Besenzoni sports seats.
A powerful 230Hp hydrojet outboard engine ensures impressive performance, while the Riva racing exhausts deliver an exhilarating sound, reminiscent of Abarth’s iconic hot-hatches.
Features include a swim platform with a recessed steel ladder and a double sundeck for relaxation, high-quality materials like Synteak synthetic teak and advanced technologies such as a Garmin stereo system with RGB LEDs.
An aquatic take on the Abarth 595/695 cabriolet, its hardtop design includes a full windshield and adjustable folding top system. Safety harnesses, a Wave Shock dampened steel support base, and a top speed of 58 knots (almost 110kph) complete the picture.
In the United States, pricing starts at $105,000 for what looks like a fabulous, fun, jetski style little water dancer.
THE LEGEND OF THE SCORPION BRAND
Abarth & C. was founded in Bologna on 31 March 1949. Like many automotive firms of the time, it bore the name of its main founder, Carlo Abarth, who incorporated the company together with his friend Guido Scagliarini.
Carlo chose the scorpion as the symbol of his fledgling company because it stood for his sign of the zodiac, it was hard to counterfeit, and it encapsulated the Abarth philosophy: “small but mean”.
The first cars built were models belonging to Cisitalia, in receivership at the time, ceded to Carlo in payment for his work for the Turin firm. Abarth also kept on 20 Cisitalia workers and the company’s site at Via Trecate 10 in Turin.
Notching up incredible records at Monza, various European victories, and a world title within the Fiat 131 Abarth Rally, was the start of what is now a legendary marque.

Registrations of these jumped 25% year-on-year in January 2024 to 8915 units from 7135 in the previous corresponding period.
Toyota led the used import market with 3316 registrations, followed by Mazda (1329), Nissan (1277), Honda (659), Subaru (653), Suzuki (254), Mitsubishi (239), BMW (218), Volkswagen (205), and Audi (178).
The Toyota Aqua led the used import market with 872 registrations in January 2024, followed by the Toyota Prius (651), Mazda Axela (443), Toyota Corolla (420), Nissan Note (383), Honda Fit (304), Subaru Impreza (302), Nissan X-Trail (301), Nissan Serena (292), and the Mazda Demio (290). Used commercials were up more than 70%.
The removal of the Clean Car Discount/Fee legislation was also reflected by the 71.3% increase in the registrations of imported used commercial vehicles to 687 units in January 2024 from 401 in the previous corresponding period.
Toyota led the used import commercial market with 350 registrations, followed by Nissan (161), Ford (40), Hino (36), Isuzu (26), Mitsubishi (22), Fiat (8), Mazda (8), Daihatsu (7), and Volkswagen (7).
Who would have thought an all-electric SUV would be wearing a Lotus badge?
The Hethel-based brand, known mostly for its lightweight, fun sports cars, has well and truly started its transition to a zero emission future, while incorporating the most cutting edge of automotive design and technology. Cue the new Lotus Eletre, an electric SUV of epic proportions.
Buyers can opt for the Eletre S featured here or the flagship, and rather mental Eletre R. Focusing on the S, you get a 112kWh battery pack with dual motor powertrain producing a combined 450kW and 710Nm. Good enough to propel you to 100kph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds. Electric range is also a claimed 600km.
The Eletre is big at 5109mm long and with its optional 23-inch multi-spoked diamond turned alloys housing green brake calipers, it has some serious stance. I also loved the simplicity of the floating rear LED light bar and active aero, including the rear wing which the driver can deploy at will.
Inside is probably one of the most up-to-date feeling cabins out there. The first thing you notice is that massive 15.1-inch screen which provides all manner of driving data and some impressive 3D graphics. The materials used are also of exceptional quality and you can spec your Eletre with an almost limitless array of trim and colour options.
The Eletre’s onboard tech is rather clever too, like the LiDAR system which uses cameras to scan 200 metres around the car and relay 3D images of passing cars and pedestrians which the driver can view on said screen. The forward facing camera which rises out of the roof can also see up to 500 metres ahead. Probably also worth
mentioning the Eletre’s 23-speaker KEF 3D sound system provides symphonic bliss. Wagner’s “Gotterdammerung” never sounded so good.
Despite being hefty at 2.5 tonnes, my goodness the Eletre S can shift, all the while having the ability to change direction like a blowfly. There is plenty of feedback when coaxing it through yet another sweeping bend and when you have finished charging hard, no pun intended, it can simmer down and truly excel as a daily driver.
The Eletre wasn’t a car I was expecting to like, but I do, rather a lot. I will miss the days of lightweight petrol powered Lotus heritage, but this new direction Lotus is taking is not something one should be afraid of. Hands down it is one of the most impressive emission-free vehicles I have had the fortune to experience. A hyper SUV indeed.

to satisfaction Steering
Consumer NZ’s survey of New Zealand’s best and worst cars revealed our favourite brands, and those we don’t love so much.
Earlier this year, results were released from the over 8000 Kiwis surveyed and 72 models reported on.
Brands such as Honda, BYD, and Tesla have won the hearts of New Zealanders, winning People’s Choice. Scoring low on the list for reliability and owner satisfaction included brands such as Volkswagen, Holden, Ssangyong, Mitsubishi, and Ford.
Consumer’s product test manager James le Page says satisfaction does depend on the needs and expectations of the user. “One person might be interested in a comfy ride and a good stereo. Another may value driving performance above all else.”
The survey found EV and hybrid car owners to be the most satisfied drivers overall. However, of those who currently drive petrol or diesel vehicles, only 13% would buy an EV in the future.
James says price and “range anxiety” could be to blame for why drivers are reluctant to purchase an EV. “Non-EV owners are generally reluctant to embrace an EV, but once they do, it’s hard to go back to driving a petrol or diesel car again,” he says.
“While the price and lack of range are the obvious barriers, environmental factors, such as how we recycle or dispose of EV batteries, have crept higher up the list of concerns,” he adds.
