The bi-annual Winter Encraftment Market is once again gracing Christchurch with its presence.

O

n Sunday 3 July, from 10am until 3pm, Lincoln Event Centre on 15 Meijer Drive will become a melting pot of handmade arts and crafts fashioned by the hands of some of New Zealand’s finest crafters and designers. From clothing and accessories, through to jewellery, houseware, stationery, toys and art prints, the event will be brimming with treats for all tastes. More than 80 tempting stalls will be on site for exploration and delicious coffee and sweet and savoury goodies will provide the fuel for the ultimate shopping mission.

The first market found its feet in May 2011 just after the Christchurch earthquakes. It provided a platform for artisans whose regular points of sales had been impacted by the natural disaster. The market has since evolved into a bi-annual bonanza of creativity that continues to remind us that Christchurch still has a strong cultural and recreational heartbeat. For further information about The Encraftment Market and how you can apply to be a stallholder for future events, make your way over to www.encraftmentmarket.com

Jewel Crown The

Katherine Gee (Kat) is a mother and a bona fide New Zealand entrepreneur, fulfilling her potential in both extraordinary roles with grace, candour and raw passion. An obvious example of nature and nurture in action, Kat’s talent has been shaped and polished to perfection, like the beautiful stones that feature in her world-class Kagi jewellery collections.

The jewel in the crown of her beautiful business, Kat shares with Metropol the creative and strategic journey she has experienced with her business over the last decade - a story rich in sentiment that, in fact, began in Indonesia a long time ago. What inspired the inception of Kagi? I started Kagi in 2006 with a dream. My dream was to create designer jewellery that was bold, feminine, unique, and allowed women the freedom to style it their own way. I always had a passion for jewellery, but it wasn’t until working as a graphic designer that I realised a career in jewellery was really the direction I wanted to pursue. Prompted by this revelation, I quit my job, bought a business, enrolled in night school and did everything I possibly could to turn my dream into reality. The story about my grandma also holds a special place in my heart. I was inspired by her bravery to follow her dreams and understood from an early age just how special jewellery can be. The story begins with a strand of pearls,

10 June 30, 2016 Metropol

which was given to my grandmother by her father when she was just 18. They lived in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) on a rubber plantation. It was around the war time and the Japanese were invading Indonesia. One day a well-dressed Japanese man arrived at their home and

in another – never seeing each other. My grandmother was a bit clever and crafty and for three whole years she hid the strand of pearls in a jewellery pouch in her undergarments! After the war my grandma’s family was forced to slowly sell off the jewellery from her pouch in order to

survive. Everything my family owned had been taken by the war. Nothing remained – other than these pearls. These pearls are still in our family to this day and they are very special for all of us and I think in some way have laid the foundations for me of what was to come.

Where do you draw seasonal inspiration from? Anything and everywhere! I am very fortunate to have a number of travel opportunities with Kagi, which means I am open to a lot of influencers and inspirations - this keeps my design concepts fresh and on trend. Have you had any particular mentors or support systems that have contributed to the success of the business? I have been very fortunate over the years to have had the support of some great people. My father, to begin with, has always been a guiding light and has a cool, calm and rational approach to everything. I am also lucky enough to count the incredible Diane Foreman as both a friend and a mentor over the years. My family and friends who have stood beside me through both the ups and downs (there have been many) of running a business - without them I simply wouldn’t have survived. My partner Phil is my rock and I am blessed to have him and our wee son Xavier in my life. Of course my mum is pretty awesome too (I don’t tell her nearly enough) and has helped me chart a path through the sometimes bewildering course of motherhood. What do you consider to be some of the business’ greatest milestones? This year we turn 10! To reach the milestone of 10 years in business (especially in the fickle fashion industry) is no mean feat. To celebrate we are paying homage to the women who have supported us over the years and having real Kagi women to model in our photoshoot. Our next collection takes inspiration from this spirit of celebration and popping champagne - something I definitely plan on doing! Another career milestone for me was being a finalist in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards and Kagi being listed in the Deloittes fast 50 for three years in a row - this was a great way to acknowledge all the hard work that my team have put in over the years. Kagi Blue Danube Drops Earcharms $99 on Silver Huggies $49 www.kagi.net

Kagi Blue Danube Pendant Blue Side $179 www.kagi.net

What do you consider to be some of the greatest virtues of New Zealand’s business landscape? Are there any particular challenges? It’s so easy to start a business in New Zealand and I found people incredibly supportive of start-ups. Our Kiwi can do attitude also lends itself to mucking in and making things happen. The one draw-back is our market size. We have a relatively small pool of customers and niche product lines that may go great guns in the States or United Kingdom but they don’t stand a chance here as there’s only a handful of potential customers. Therefore, exporting is very important for us as a country to access more customers. Can you share some of your future ambitions for the business? For me as creative director my focus is really on continuing to design innovative, versatile jewellery that women love. It’s about further adding to and extending our existing offering. As a business we wish to continue growing our Kagi brand into more top retail locations across Australia. We want to continue doing more of what we love and are good at and less of anything else. We are always sharpening the pencil and wanting to make tomorrow’s Kagi better than today’s.

Katherine (Kat) Gee is the founder of the decadent but accessible eponymous jewellery brand Kagi. How do you strike a balance between work and home life? It’s a constant push and pull really, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m a new a mumma now so have the benefit of a six month old to keep me grounded and in the present. I also love Kagi so juggle them both and just find ways of squeezing things in. Both myself and my partner work part time so share the child raising and I have a fabulous nanny to plug the gaps. It’s a bit of a work in progress, but so far so good. Having a baby has really brought home to me what’s really important - you blink and he’s already got two teeth, is sitting up and giggling. For me it’s really about having the right support systems on the home front to be able to do what I do. How do you define entrepreneurialism? It involves commercialising a vision. It’s the true amalgamation of something creative and turning it into something commercial. It takes guts, and as Owen Glenn would say, ‘rat-like cunning!’

S

ome might say I’ve walked the hard road in life so far, but hey, I don’t dwell on the past. I’m two years old this year and I’d like to say I’m the warm and friendly type. I absolutely love being snuggled and scratched under my chin. I’ve overheard some of my friends describing me as ‘lion-esque’ and yes, I can understand why. Just between you and me I’m quite proud of my shiny black and chocolate brown fur – it’s pretty easy to style, and has a natural shine, and I think it makes me a very cuddly companion. While some may say looks don’t matter, it’s doesn’t hurt that I’m not hard on the eye this much I know! I’d have to say that it was love at first sight with Letitia. I think I can speak for us both when I say, we both knew we were destined to spend our lives together. I love her affectionate and compassionate nature, and she loves my loyalty and charm. We’re a match made in heaven really. I was really fortunate to have the support of Cat Rescue too – the awesome local Christchurch cat charity were more than willing to help find me a home if need be, but ultimately it was Letitia who saved the day. She could look past my rough start in life, and the serious bladder issues I’ve been challenged with. I’m far from being a Drama King,

but it really was touch and go for a while there. My blocked bladder almost sent me to kitty heaven but I guess it’s true that we cats really do have nine lives! She’s one of the amazing humans happy to do a tiny bit more work to ensure I can really thrive and fulfil my potential living a happy and long life. When friends have asked my new mum why she picked me I’ve heard her say, “I have a deep connection with animals that need extra care and I love to be able to look after them and give them the love and support they need. Otis is such a beautiful cat – he jumped into my arms from the moment I met him.” As you can tell, this is definitely a fairy tale ending for me and Letitia and I’m so thankful to all my loving friends at Ourvets who nursed me back to health when I came in very unwell. I know they will be my friends – and my family – for life.

Social Climbers By Céline Gibson

Craig Hutchison has a lot to smile about these days. Having recently completed a successful run of April Phillips’ stage play Blind Eye, he is already in rehearsal for his next play Social Climbers.

C

AS’n’OVA PRODUCTIONS was established in 2008 with the objective of providing professional support for amateur theatre in Christchurch. Craig has a stalwart support team behind him, namely Ali Robb, Rebecca Wakelin and Gary Hutchison; it’s their job to ensure Craig’s business ethic of ‘total theatre’ (i.e. backstage and front-of-house are just as important as actors) is carried out to the letter. Social Climbers, a Roger Hall classic, tells the story of six women - four school teachers, a school counsellor and an unhelpful daughter – who find themselves marooned in a DOC hut due to bad weather. Initially they cope quite well, but the

prolonged rain plus their cramped conditions, not to mention an over-indulgence in wine, begins ramping up the tension on what was supposed to be a pleasant tramping weekend. Theatre aside, Craig, never one to rest on his laurels, has three feature films in the pipeline and on September 18 he will be in Los Angeles attending the prestigious Emmy Awards as an honoured guest; what better recognition for a man so passionate about his art? No wonder Craig Hutchison has a smile on his face. Social Climbers runs from 14-23 July at Heaton Performing Arts Centre. Book online at www.casnova.co.nz

Magical Methven In the eye of the Misty Mountain, nestled at the foot of Mt Hutt, lies magical Methven, part pastoral, part outdoor adventure playground, often passed by for ritzier, glitzier alpine destinations.

Year round you will find plenty to keep you entertained, even if swooshing down the white stuff isn’t your thing.

M

ethven, however, is one of those secret Kiwi spots, still unpolluted by traffic tailbacks, large bus tours and campervan cavalcades, where the locals offer a warm welcome, and there is a plethora of things to do and see, all just over an hour from Christchurch. Recent convert and devotee Polly Gillespie describes Methven “like Takaka, only with Mountains”. Of course, Methven has long been a winter destination, with Mt Hutt Ski field winning the World Ski Resorts “best

New Zealand ski field” prize in 2015, but year round you will find plenty to keep you entertained, even if swooshing down the white stuff isn’t your thing. For walking or biking, there is the Methven Heritage Walkway, the Awa Awa Rata Reserve, Washpen Falls, the Mt Hutt bike park, and Rakaia Gorge - all with breath taking views and scenery. Head up past Lakes Camp and Clearwater, and you’ll find yourself at Mt Sunday – the setting for Edoras in The Lord of the Rings, and with jaw dropping vistas from the top.

You have a choice of two stunning golf courses, one in the village, and one at Terrace Downs. You can go jetboating, horse trekking, clay bird shooting, try archery, go boating, fishing or sailing at the Lakes, and when it’s cold enough, ice skate and toast marshmallows at the open air ice rink in Staverley. Once you have exhausted yourself, head back into Methven for gorgeous hearty pub grub at the Crossroads, a real Irish Welcome and a good Craic at the Dubliner, or for delicious a la carte, try Ski Time Lodge or Shackelton’s Restaurant at

Brinkley Resort. For the best Mountain views and spectacular sunsets, stay at Southern Cross Lodge, Brinkley Resort or Ski Time Apartments and Lodge – and without the light pollution found in the city, you can star gaze or watch the twinkling lights of the snow groomers up on the ski field working their own magic. As for shopping, Primo and Secundo, or “Maria’s” to the locals, is a Methven institution - you can happily while away the hours in the café and vintage emporium with more treasure to be found

than Smaug’s lair, fossicking with a good coffee and vitals – you’ll enter a stranger and leave as a friend. Across the way, Clothe is a designer boutique full of local and international designer brands thoughtfully chosen by its owner Rachelle. Methven is home to artist Tessa Watson and sculptor Hannah Kidd, so check out the Methven Art Gallery or Heritage Centre if you like to find original pieces. A short walk up Forest Drive will lead you to Country By Design for French Brocante inspired interiors and objects. With its annual events like Mountain Thunder (comparable to the Isle of Man’s famous TT Motorbike event), The Scarecrow Trail for kids, and the Light up winter Festival and regular live music at the Brown or Blue Pub, or the Dubliner, Methven will truly put you under its spell. Whether you come for the snow, the scenery, or just to relax away from the city hub-bub, there’s something for everyone.

an artistic

The Christchurch Arts Centre is undergoing a transformative evolution before our eyes.

20 June 30, 2016 Metropol

he commitment to helping the building fulfil its potential as the arts and cultural heart of Christchurch never faltered in spite of the serious and widespread damaged caused by the Canterbury earthquakes. With Christchurch named as ‘one of the world’s most creative cities’ by How I Love Travel only last month, all eyes are on our brave, bold and beautiful city, and some of its key milestones like the re-opening of the Arts Centre’s Great Hall on Friday 17 June, which more than satiates our desire for positive and palpable change. While the spotlight has been on this monumental achievement, the Great Hall is graciously sharing its moment of glory with a number of Arts Centre developments making history and cementing the future of this great place. Christchurch’s i-SITE Visitor’s Centre is moving to the Arts Centre’s Boys’ High Building in spring with surrounding spaces being devoted to a range of specialty retailers. The significance of the i-SITE cannot be overstated with 250,000 visitors each year in its temporary location in the Botanic Gardens. Arts Centre Chief Executive, Andre Lovatt, says the i-SITE is a natural fit for Worcester Boulevard given its proximity to a multitude of tourist destinations and attractions including Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery and the Botanic Gardens. On the culinary side of the cultural equation, the Arts Centre is also due for a new addition to its eateries. Hamish Evans, the owner of Switch Espresso and Black Betty, will open a new café with a scientific twist. ‘Bunsen’, on the ground floor of the Clock Tower space, will open its doors come spring with a space that flows out to Worcester Boulevard. Restoration of the 1877 Gothic Revival building has given it a new lease of life while retaining its beautiful heritage features. The Arts Centre is also acting up – in the best positive sense. From 17 June to 2 July (get in quick), the Free Theatre at the centre is delivering magical drama and dance with its performance of Frankenstein. Music, film and puppetry all feature in the mystical multimedia performance. Keep an eye out for further updates in Metropol Magazine as we cover the latest news on the beloved Arts Centre.

To be, or not to be By Majka Kaiser

The changing of the seasons heralds the opportune time to reassess the contents of our wardrobes and get things in order.

S

ince dragging my winter clothes out of storage a few By Majka Kaiser weeks ago I have been procrastinating ever since about tackling this seemingly formidable task. The benefits of revisiting your wardrobe organisation are plenty, especially as the new season rolls around; you discover all kinds of gems you forgot you even had which saves money and doubling up on items and you can even make money by selling them through your local recycling boutique. It also creates space for new items to take their place and revitalises your creative styling options.

I like to organise my closet according to occasion; casual, corporate, and after-dark attire. First things first - separate the contents into three sections; clothes to keep, clothes to sell (or donate to charity) and clothes to bin. The reason why this process can be so agonising is that we spend far too much time (and waste valuable closet space) by holding onto things we have either outgrown - physically or stylistically - or have spent an extortionate amount of money on. If it’s been a good two years since you last wore something, then, by and large, it’s more than likely it is either the wrong colour or style for you. Therefore, it’s best to bite the bullet; sell it, bin it, or give it away to someone who will wear it to death. Then you can replace it with an item you love that suits your figure and your personality. I like to organise my closet according to occasion; casual, corporate, and after-dark attire. Of course there are bound to be some crossovers, but this general organisational approach has proven to be a time-saver over the years. Some people like to arrange by outfits, but I personally find that limits my creativity. Within the three categories I arrange like items together (all trousers together, all tops together, etc.) and then group each section by colour. However you choose to organise your wardrobe, make sure it suits the way you like to live and dress.

Educating the nail Technicians Nail servicing is one of the fastest growing beauty industries, so staying current is imperative.

“Our goal is to promote and support companies and beauty schools who are using quality products.”

T

op nail technicians, educators and students were lucky to have NAILX Beauty Supplies bring icon Mindy Hardy, an international nail artist, educator and judge down under. Nail technician, Karen Clark, who trained in the 80s, recently purchased NAILX, an established company of 20 years. She saw a need for extended industry and public education in New Zealand. “Our goal is to promote and support companies and beauty schools who are using quality products while participating in education and providing hygienic, quality services to customers,” Karen says. “We encourage people to be conscious about what their technician is doing - if your nail technician isn’t using quality brands or freely advertising product names, it warrants a potential relocation to a new technician. It’s also good to ask for training and competency certificates.” NAILX has distributed INM (International Nail

Manufacturers) products nationally for 10 years. CEO of INM, Garret Kellenberger, and education head Pamela Mares also attended the open trainings and educator training hosted at The Beauty School at Southern Institute of Technology. “He was pleased with the high level of educational facilities and quality educators in New Zealand,” Karen says. “Since Garret fronted the third generation family business seven years ago, it’s important for him to see his professional products being used correctly.” The training was a huge success with technicians and students hungry for new skills and inspiration during the 10-hour training days. “For those who missed out, we have trained educators nationwide keen to pass on their knowledge.” If you’re an aspiring nail technician, require further education or want to contact local industry leaders, call NAILX on 376 5077 or email karen@nailx.co.nz

This is a beautiful technique where compatible colours are blended toneon-tone with ribbons of opposing shades interwoven to create a unified, luminous glow. The hues merge into each other adding fabulous texture to hair. Hair Contouring is another bespoke technique Scissortrix loves. There are no hard and fasts rules for fit or fabric this season – snug or slouchy, wool or suede, beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to the best coat for you. Always think about what works best for your height and body shape though! With price tags that can leave you feeling a bit hot under the collar, the best advice we can offer when you’re approaching an investment, is to think about longevity. qualities right now, think about how you see the coat fitting into your wardrobe choices down the line. Black is, as always, the sensible option, but if you’d like to flirt with options outside the traditional square, perhaps still err on the side of caution and opt for a rich navy or charcoal grey, or even a stripe. Depending on the fabric, a great but economic investment is the ever-trusty lint brush. As always, your coat will stand a much better chance of seeing you through multiple winters if you follow the care instructions religiously. The expression ‘better late than never’ unfortunately doesn’t apply with this rule of thumb!

When you’re approaching an investment think about longevity.

ary-Ann Toohey, a professional makeup artist, has the expertise to create a feminine, polished and pretty look for any occasion - and can also teach you how to apply it. “Makeup is a very individual thing,” she says. “It’s not about one look for everyone; it’s about reading someone’s face and looking at their wants and needs. It’s also about creating a timeless, classic look which can be built upon, rather than focusing on trends.” Mary-Ann’s artistic talent transferred from painting canvases to painting faces after completing a year of Fine Arts. “I discovered makeup artistry and it was the perfect fit for me.” After working in the industry and travelling overseas for 20 years, she returned to Christchurch and set up the business. “I learnt so much on my travels; it really broadened my knowledge and cemented my love for makeup.” Mary-Ann offers a mobile service

and can provide one-on-one makeup styling or group sessions in your own home. “I like to provide a good basic understanding of knowledge, techniques and tips so you feel really comfortable with the products you are using. I assess what clients have currently, what works and what can be updated across a range of brands at different price points. I’m not affiliated with any particular brand, so if I’m going to recommend something, it has to be really good. “I’m also currently collaborating with MECCA COSMETICA to provide a group Makeup Master Class in store at Ballantynes this September, which is really exciting. More than 3000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year and more than 1200 die from the disease. “Bowel cancer is more common as you get older, particularly from the age of 50. Common signs and symptoms of bowel cancer may include changes in the normal pattern of going to the toilet that continue for several weeks (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely), blood in your bowel motion, tiredness and weight loss,” Tim says. “The kind of work we do has definitely been raised in people’s consciousness with the announcement in the recent Budget of funding for a national bowel screening programme. It was excellent news because international evidence has shown that bowel screening programmes have the potential to reduce deaths from bowel cancer by at least 16 to 22 percent (after 8 to 10 years) in the population offered screening. The New Zealand programme will be rolled out progressively from 2017 and will offer bowel screening every two years to eligible people aged 60 to 74.” Tim adds that bowel cancer affects more men than women and advises that if they or their loved ones notice any of the common symptoms, or have any concerns at all because of a family history of bowel cancer, it is important to be checked by a doctor. “People can make an appointment with us at Christchurch Colorectal and we can carry out a diagnostic colonoscopy. Bowel cancer can be more successfully treated – a 90% chance of long-term survival – if detected early. “If there is a delay in diagnosis and treatment and the cancer is more advanced, it is harder to cure. So our advice is ‘don’t delay’. Even if there is no evidence of a malignant tumour there may be

pre-cancerous polyps. Most bowel cancers develop from benign polyps so all but the smallest should be removed to ensure they don’t turn into cancer.” Christchurch Colorectal is based at Specialist Centre@21, Level 2, 21 Caledonian Road, St Albans - on the Southern Cross campus. These are new modern rooms with easy access, including a lift and discreet covered and uncovered parking.

Last month Rangiora’s main street opened to twoway traffic for the first time since the Canterbury earthquakes and it’s just the first in a number of exciting new developments for the township as its centre comes to life.

W

ithin the next couple of months, major upgrades of High Street will be completed and, with several developments drawing to a close, anticipation is building. Work on the new 5,000 square metre Farmers Rangiora building is moving ahead in leaps and bounds. With more than twice the floor space of its retail predecessor, the High Street store will also house a number of other specialty stores including Whitcoulls, Pascoes, Specsavers and sushi shops when it opens its doors in early September. Developments to the former Robbies Bar and Bistro at the Junction Hotel continue to add vibrancy as the township welcomes its first Vietnamese restaurant. When local culinary icon Sushi Ya closes for business in the evenings, the premises will transform into Secret, a Vietnamese and Japanese fusion restaurant that also features a sushi train. Artisan by Rangiora Bakery has also recently opened its new precinct on the corner of Durham and High Streets, a building which also features the recently opened Pita Pit.

THE

Best little Town By Melinda Collins

Oxford promotes itself as the ‘best little town in New Zealand’. A welcome reprieve from the mile-an-hour urban hustle, it doesn’t disappoint.

ust under an hour outside of the city, Oxford feels like a world away from its metropolitan neighbour. Oxford started life as a small sawmilling town in the 1950s, and despite the rural backdrop of the township which is cradled by the Canterbury foothills, Oxford has transformed into what it is today - a destination popular with foodies and fashionistas alike. A row of striking historic villas features a delicious offering that encompasses everything from homewares and furnishings, to fabulous fashions, arts and crafts, with an equally diverse range of eats to enjoy on your outing. Rugging up is easily done in Oxford, with Egyptian

cotton and Belgian linens sitting alongside winter coats and capes. There are gift shops and galleries where jewellery, books, mosaics, garden ornamentry, and even gourmet-ingredients go hand-in-hand. There are stores packed with hand knits, homemade children’s clothing and knitted toys and if you’re into the arts, there are ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles, paintings and prints. There’s the museum, a 1975 jailhouse and even an antique store filled with vintage valuables and a number of cafes, wine bars and restaurants to enjoy along the way. There’s certainly no shortage of things to see and do in this diverse little rural oasis. But then that’s Oxford, a little bit eclectic and a whole lot of cool.

INNOVATIVe INK

Walking upstairs to the vibrant, friendly tattoo studio in Rangiora is the exciting beginning to planning your new tattoo.

L Tattoos now transcend age and personality

ifetime artist and tattooist for 16 years, Steve Purtle, fronts the private, inspirational workspace. His skills are unrivalled with talented tattoo artwork such as the intricate visual illusions of M.C Esher. The vigilant perfectionist can put his creative hand to anything. Offering a half-hour free consultation, Steve draws up a client’s dream ideas or suggests designs - and the best place for it. Tattoos now transcend age and personality – “It may be something representing a child or event - even

words or quotes in their simplicity,” says the studio’s Manager Trudi. She says the euphoric look on clients faces, when they finally see their tattoo, says it all. “It can be quite a cathartic experience.” Now there’s a new buzz of excitement at NZ Ink Tattoo Studio - they are branching out to include a body piercing service. Sara, with a decade’s experience, is the new piercer. Belly buttons, nose studs, ears, lips, tongues and eyebrows anything above the belt - can be pierced using American quality surgical stainless steel jewellery or a client’s own that is put through an Autoclave Steriliser. “Our procedures and hygienic standards are set at very high levels,” Trudi says. “We are happy to do children’s ears and use a Cannula Needle instead of a piercing gun.” Winter, without the UV rays and heat, is an opportune time to do something for yourself and finally get that tattoo or piercing. A gift voucher also makes a unique surprise. Visit NZ Ink Tattoo Studio, 5 Good Street Rangiora. Phone 03 310 6669 or message on Facebook: www.facebook.com/nzinktattoostudio

Go Figure By Majka Kaiser

Turn pain into pleasure by narrowing down your style options before stepping into the bridal showroom with these helpful hints. We’ve worked up a guide to choosing your ideal bridal gown style.

1.

4.

2.

5.

An A-line skirt that gradually flares out from the natural waist down to the ground will highlight a pear-shape’s narrow midsection and detract from heavier hips and thighs. Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta are especially effective, as they don’t cling, and a spaghetti-strap bodice or a plunging neckline will also showcase your more slender upper body. Busty brides are best to choose a style with a scooped neckline that opens up the face and displays your best assets with style and dignity. If you’re sold on a strappy bodice, make sure it has a slight dip along the neckline as opposed to one that goes straight across, otherwise it will only serve to make you appear top-heavy. On the other hand, smaller busted women can add volume with ruching or padding in the bodice.

38 June 30, 2016 Metropol

3.

Fuller figures suit empire-line gowns that begin just under the bust and fall into a floorlength A-line skirt. Dodge the maternity-look at all costs by avoiding pleating beneath the bust. Ensure the gown is well tailored to your shape so as not to add further bulk to your voluptuous figure and choose stiff fabrics like satin that provide structure as opposed to more flowing fabrics like chiffon. Styles that cinch in at the smallest point of your waistline and flare out into a gradual ‘A-Shape’ are most flattering for women with an appleshaped figure. To add shape, opt for a bodice to create a corset-like effect. Add ruching or lace detailing to camouflage problem areas, and opt for a deep neckline to draw attention to the vertical line rather than the horizontal. Petite women should avoid dresses with a dropped waistline or hemlines that fall mid-calf as they will make your legs appear nonexistent. Instead opt for a style with a waistline above your natural waist so your legs appear longer. Trumpet, sheath, and modified A-line gowns are ideal for the petite figure. Keep detailing on the diminutive side and limit it to the bodice, in order to draw the eye upward.

The blushing By Majka Kaiser

T

he perfect bridal glow owes to more than the matrimonial bliss itself - it’s about having access to the top tips for achieving a flawless visage. In the spirit of channeling your inner Goddess, we’ve come up with some simple and practical steps for your Big Day.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Always have a trial with your chosen makeup artist 3-5 weeks prior to saying ‘I do’, and if you’re planning on getting a fake tan, make sure you schedule a trial run in advance to avoid potential catastrophe. Avoid on-trend makeup looks that may date; instead opt for a timeless look that accentuates your natural beauty. Choose stronger, brighter colours than you’d wear everyday to compensate for the lack of colour in your bridal gown and for hotography purposes. Maximise the impact of your peepers by wearing false eyelashes. You can always save on time and avoid hassle on the day by having them applied in advance at a beauty salon. Allow at least 45 minutes for makeup application on the day to minimise stress.

What’s an Indian Pale Ale? What’s an American Pale Ale? What are the flavours? What’s the difference?

A

trip to the Volstead to celebrate Harrington’s Breweries 25 year anniversary reminded me how far we have come. One look in the Volstead chiller and the plethora of choice is clearly visible. Harrington’s is the largest family brewery in the country and over a few of the brand’s Rogue Hop Deluxe Pilsners I got chatting with them about what makes a craft beer successful and why Kiwis have embraced the great variation in styles. Trudy Harrington puts it down to knowledge and tastes. “We developed a pilsner with that great hops taste. The New Zealand palate has changed and people are looking for something each individual

likes. We were brewing craft beer before it was cool.” Zac Cassels from Cassels Brewery says of the taste change, “New Zealand’s craft beer market is continually growing up and evolving – hoppy fruity ales are hot right now and have been for some years. There has been a growing trend of low strength and mid strength beers in the last 18 months. Sours are also very fashionable at present.” Dux Central has over 180 craft and international beers and 12 on tap at all times. This offers something for pretty much all tastes. Operations Manager Ross Herrick says, “Huge care and attention is paid to each of the brews with quality ingredients. Catering to the market we are always looking

to refine them and develop different products for the public to try.” I also caught up with the entrepreneurial, Bladley Tuhi, who is importing the range Saku Kuld. “Saku Kuld is very different to most beers out there, a sweet beer and very easy to drink. It’s a great mix of malt and hops and you can enjoy a pint or two at the Bicycle thief in Tai Tapu.” It’s great to see Canterbury people thriving in the industry and we all get to benefit. The range of beers available now is endless and there is something for everybody’s taste. You know the great thing about that? You’ve just got to try them all to find your favourite. So many beers, so little time.

going green By Melinda Collins

First there was the cabbage soup diet, then there was the juice cleanse. We’ve been encouraged by macrobiotic diets and wholefood diets, and discouraged by liquid diets and pill diets.

here’s been low fat, low sugar, high protein and low carb. Then, of course, there was souping, blending and now extracting. Yes, our foods and even how we eat them, are heavily influenced by both fads and fallacies. Finally there’s one we can really sink our teeth into – plants. Ok, so it may not sound as appetising as it is, but plants are playing a powerful role in a surprising number of products, and not just for vegans and vegetarians. Plant-based diets – including vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fruits - are going from the margins to the mainstream. According to the numbers, the market for non-dairy products is skyrocketing, meat alternative sales are expected to tip the scales at $5 billion by 2020, and more than a third of consumers are open to plantbased products. According to global market analyst Mintel, veggie burgers and non-dairy milks have escaped the realm of ‘substitutes’. “Instead, the growing ranks of novel protein sources and potential replacements appeal to the

everyday consumer, foreshadowing a profoundly changed marketplace in which what was formerly ‘alternative’ could take over the mainstream.” Global food and restaurant consultants group Baum + Whiteman included vegetables on its list of the top 11 trends on tap for 2016 stating, “We’ve reached a tipping point for vegetables. They’re pushing animal protein to the side of the plate… or entirely off it. Relentlessly rising beef prices, horror over hormones, a scramble for ever-more antioxidants, health-and-diet concerns, growth of farmers markets, locavore drummers, increasing numbers of flexitarians … all the stars have nicely aligned”. A list by the Whole Foods Market states this year’s plantforward movement will be all about harnessing the power of plants – from quinoa protein in hair care products to vitamin-rich veggies in frozen dessert pops. Plant-based options are everywhere — from fast food menus to steakhouses. Times are changing, and if the trend-watchers are correct, this year looks like it will bring even more options to the dinner table.

BentoBoxes

By Melinda Collins

I remember my school lunches well, not necessarily fondly. More often than not something would leak leaving a soggy pulp where sandwiches once sat, my excitable five-year-old self bounding through the school gates would almost certainly result in blotchy brown bruises on anything that came off a tree and, on the off chance I got chips, they had more chew than crunch. Well not anymore. Across the globe – or at least its online incarnation – lunchboxes are being festooned with colour and style, from sandwiches cut into stars and fruit fashioned into flowers, to hard-boiled eggs that rival the Easter kind. The Japanese have been onto the Bento-style lunches for some time now, but in our little corner of the South Pacific, the demand for this culinary artistry began when schools banned plastic wraps, yoghurt pots and multi-pack snacks. Yes, mums right here in New Zealand are creating these minimasterpieces for their littlies to show off to their friends in the playground. From a small Japanese cultural phenomenon, ‘bento’ has hit the big-time. Why go Bento? • Bento boxes give children a great variety • Funking up foods promotes healthier food choices • They offer a great creative outlet and fun for all ages • Kids are motivated to get involved in their own lunches • Bento boxes are environmentally friendly, cutting down food packaging • They look cool!

Warm Potato & Salmon Salad The winter fishing season is kicking in now. With some rivers now closed for the season, the North Canterbury lakes, like Coleridge if you have a boat, can be productive. Some lucky anglers with time to spare and access to their favourite “Spot X” could be bringing home a healthy specimen destined for the table – salmon. Always delicious when filleted and seared with a crispy skin, hot or cold smoked, it always makes for a tasty bite to eat. Try this recipe from our lunch menu with your home smoked or locally sourced salmon. Ingredients • 8 soft boiled eggs, halved • 50g Hazelnut Dukkah (head to The Villas Facebook page for a recipe) • Handful of coarsely chopped flat leaf parsley • 1kg of cooked and cubed Nadine potatoes

(The Villas likes to use Nadine potatoes for their mild flavour and dense texture as they retain their shape during cooking) • ¼ cup olive oil • 150g cornichons • Juice of half a lemon • 500g of hot smoked salmon • Salt and pepper to taste

Method Take the parsley, dukkah, lemon juice, cornichons and olive oil and toss together in a large bowl Warm the pre-cooked & cubed potatoes in the oven for 4 – 5 mins then toss through the dukkah/cornichon dressing Gently fold through the smoked salmon pieces and season with salt & pepper Place soft boiled egg halves on top to garnish.

There’s an increasing range of ‘bento boxes’ available on the market, from specialist designs that range from $30-$50, through to standard multi-use compartment tupperware which is generally $20 or less. Silicon cupcake cups offer a great option for ‘breaking up’ larger lunchboxes. Countless websites and blogs offer tips on how to create these delicious mini masterpieces, but all you really need is some cookie cutters and your imagination. And let’s face it, the fact that kids are asking for red cabbage and bean sprouts to improve their bento boxes can’t possibly be a bad thing.

THE MAGIC OF

MOËT By Nicholas Henare

I was fortunate enough to get an invite to the Moët and Chandon ‘Moët Party day’, a unique global party that was happening simultaneously all over the world on 10 June.

T

he concept of Moët Party Day has been tailormade to celebrate living in the now and to encourage sharing memorable moments with those around you. From the United Kingdom to France, Hong Kong to Japan, Moët & Chandon hosted an evening of entertainment at Moët Party Day, offering stylish ways to savour champagne in collaboration with some of the most decadent restaurants, bars and lounges around the globe, including Baretta Bar in the heart of Christchurch. “Moët Party Day springs from Moët & Chandon’s legendary spirit of entertainment, it’s what we call ‘savoir-fête’, where we turn experiences into true Moët moments,” says Moët & Chandon Senior Brand

Manager Ali Campbell. “This global event is a chance for us to share a single day, live in the now, and celebrate memorable moments together in a stylish way.” Moët was established by Claude Moet in 1743 and in 1833 the company was renamed Moët et Chandon after Pierre-Gabriel Chandon. Thanks to King Louis the XV it has become iconic with celebration and lifestyle ever since. Moët knows how to throw a party and the crowd at Baretta was savoring every moment. With a countdown to midnight it felt like New Year’s Eve. Keep your eye out for next year’s Moët party day, it’s a must do on the annual itinerary.

An

injection of energy When you have the pleasure of spending time with Deb Riach, co-owner and operator of the beloved Coffee Worx brand, it takes no time at all to work out why her South Island business has gone from strength to strength.

A

t the heart of the business there are the unequivocal assets – premium quality coffee, state-of the-art machinery and accessories for domestic and commercial use, and an impressive range of eats. But the alchemy of Coffee Worx success has a couple of truly inspiring and one-of-a-kind ingredients in the mix – Deb and her husband Ian and their palpable love and passion for what they do. Their dedication has culminated in a highly respected and valued branch in Rangiora and, very soon, will manifest in a new espresso bar and roastery on Hayton Road in Wigram. Of the business’ inspiring evolution Deb says, “We turn nine in November and opening our new espresso bar is really our foray into having our first retail outlet back in Christchurch. “We started in the industry 20 years ago and have always seen ourselves on a progressive journey. Coffee Worx was initially established as a supply company for Yellow Rocket bagels. The earthquakes completely changed the trajectory of our life. Now Coffee Worx is our business.” Deb is alluding to the life-changing circumstances that followed the Canterbury earthquakes, which saw both central Coffee Worx branches closed down necessitating a move out to Rangiora. “We can’t do anything about what happened, but we can focus on doing a really great job for our customers. We are genuinely passionate about our business and I still find the coffee industry exciting to be involved in. “We are thrilled to be able to serve up our famous bagels to loyal customers again and to give the people in the area a new exciting option for coffee, food and coffee advice. We are proud to remain privately owned and want to continue to support our customers through Christchurch’s recovery.”

Laze in the chaise By Kate Pierson

The chaise longue doesn’t just have beautiful form and function - it has a phenomenal history with a French twist.

T

The chaise longue is the perfect complement to contemporary or vintage style interior.

he ‘chaise longue’, which translates into English as ‘a long chair’, is a seemingly modern piece of furniture, but has an incredible heritage deeply rooted in the privilege and pleasure of French aristocracy. With looks, personality and practicality all hallmarks of this adored furniture concept, it has effortlessly transcended generation after generation, valiantly surviving the often frenetic nature of décor fashion. Oozing old-world sophistication but modern day charm, it has happily found its feet and a home in the modern homes of the 21st century. The chaise longue is the perfect complement to contemporary or vintage style interior. Brought brand spanking new, or in a more antiquated state that requires some tender-loving-care, the ‘long chair’ is the perfect statement piece for a bedroom or living room. From leather to velvet, the fabric options are unlimited with the ability to re-upholster if your piece needs a pick-me-up, or you’d like to accommodate a new aesthetic in your home. Get lost in the infinite possibilities online by simply Googling ‘chaise longue’. Dare to dream!

Spaces W Shine that

By Kate Pierson

We’ve struck gold on page 64 of this issue, and as you can tell from that story, we’re quite fond of - okay, infatuated by spaces that shine right now.

hile gold has a definite X factor that instantly adds warmth and elegance to a space, it’s copper that has the ability to stay the course. It has a sense of timeliness and is capable of being both a mesmorising and modest accent for your space. While copper made headlines in 2015 as ‘the next big thing’ I’d argue it’s never lost its street cred and is always in vogue. Difference of opinion aside, what matters is that copper is front and centre stage, and here to stay for the foreseeable future. From lampshades to ladles, the

copper theme is ubiquitous and can be introduced on a small or large scale without looking ostentatious. As we experience a much-needed and seismic shift away from the ‘throw away’ mentality that has long been a pervasive part of consumer culture, wise investments are not just about creativity but conscience of the environmental sort too. That’s where copper really shines as it helps you tick both boxes. Given its aesthetic star qualities and it’s longevity in terms of form and function, it can take pride of place in your home well into the future.

Make your rental a

By Majka Kaiser

Living in rental apartments all my adult life I’ve become accustomed to making the best of what I have on a limited budget and within the constraints imposed by landlords. You’d be surprised at what can be achieved within these confines when you get a little creative.

ith housing prices the way they are and with many Cantabrians living in temporary accommodation awaiting EQC repairs and rebuilds, a lot of you can undoubtedly relate. But just because you are living in a rental doesn’t mean you can’t make it personal to you. Although there are many key elements you can’t change about a rental property, like wall colour, flooring

or spatial design, there are many more aspects you do have control over that you can even take with you to your next, and perhaps, more permanent home. If you’re planning on staying a while and simply can’t stand lime green walls, for example, there’s always a chance your landlord may be open to suggestions, and in some cases could even be willing to split the cost with you. If this isn’t an option,

opt for pieces that are multi-functional. Instead of a traditional coffee table style you could seek out a vintage trunk or poufs that can multi-task as a coffee table, occasional seating and extra storage. Injecting your personality into a rental is easily done with artwork and textiles. Although some landlords are not keen on tenants making holes in walls, there are a number of great adhesive products on the market to hang artwork that won’t damage the walls once you’re ready to move on. Artwork can also be propped

then work with what you have rather than against it. If there’s an element of your temporary home that’s a complete eyesore you simply can’t change, think of creative ways around the problem. Sometimes an ornate screen or a strategically hung

curtain can at least keep less attractive elements out of sight. Textiles can be a cost effective option when it comes to personalising a space that you can take with you when you go. Throws, cushions, rugs, and bed linen can completely transform a room from boring to brilliant in an instant. Throw cushions are an inexpensive way to create a cohesive, harmonious look that ties in with an existing colour scheme, while rugs are an ideal way to add warmth, delineate spaces and detract from not-so-perfect flooring. With rentals, storage space is often limited, so when buying any new furniture

IF THERE’S AN ELEMENT OF YOUR TEMPORARY HOME THAT’S A COMPLETE EYESORE YOU SIMPLY CAN’T CHANGE, THINK OF CREATIVE WAYS AROUND THE PROBLEM. up against walls on the floor or displayed atop sideboards. Think outside the frame when it comes to artwork and how you display it. You could create a feature wall with postcards fixed with Japanese washi tape or display old black and white photographs with Blu-Tack in a little nook. However you choose to make your temporary house a home, there’s always a solution, so get creative and allow your imagination to run wild.

Au Naturale By Melinda Collins

The human conscience isn’t letting up and the growing awareness of the earth’s precious resources is seeing sustainability become a hot design element for 2016. SISAL, AS WELL AS ITS CLOSE RELATIVES SEA GRASS AND JUTE, IS FEATURING STRONGLY IN THE HOME IN THE FORM OF NATURAL-FIBRE RUGS.

56 June 30, 2016 Metropol

W

e’re seeing innovative ideas of mixing new sustainable items with old upcycled materials, from old railway sleepers as ceiling support beams, to vintage weatherboards transformed into benchtops. While timber has long been regarded as an easy way to add a natural dimension of warmth and feeling to our internal spaces, it’s not just our big ticket items that are going au naturale. Eco-friendly plant-derived textiles originally developed to produce rope and twine - have evolved into glamorous and green rugs for the home. Although they often come with an expensive price tag, they are long lasting and versatile, and offer a look that is simple but sophisticated.

Sisal, as well as its close relatives sea grass and jute, is featuring strongly in the home in the form of natural-fibre rugs. But it’s not just our flooring that’s getting the natural makeover as cotton, hemp, linen and wool enhance our cushions, drapes and upholstery. Chunky, robust fibres for interior design are becoming increasingly hard to distinguish from fabrics traditionally relegated to the outdoors, but the durability makes them perfect for high-traffic dining room and living room furniture. We’re particularly enthused by the seamless connections being created between the external look of a home and the interior design. Natural materials lend themselves to both and the trend looks like its well and truly here to stay.

Emotional versus LOGICAL Purchases

LYNETTE MCFADDEN GOLD BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

I’m often party to conversations that reaffirm the power of emotion when purchasing property and every day I’m reminded of the enormous significance emotion plays in the sales process. In fact, real estate marketing, sales and activity places constant emphasis on igniting an emotional response in purchasers. Warmth, smell, colour, presentation, street appeal and texture are all emotional elements that a sales consultant should consider when going to the market with any listing. We’re taught our words and photos (and now video too) should “sell the sizzle, not the sausage”, and I’m always a fan of highlighting benefits for consumers rather than blandly listing a set of facts or statistics. Sure, that property may have four bedrooms and two bathrooms, but nowadays most properties do, so encouraging a hot-button response takes more than a brief set of bullet points. I guess the flipside to this is rhetoric that’s so contrived or lofty it bears little relevance to the subject property and the reader of the advertisement is so bored they switch off. I’ve also found an emotional purchase doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but

the purchaser – and sometimes it really doesn’t seem to make sense to anyone else! I’ve seen families buy properties that would have provided some real accommodation challenges. One purchase was triggered by one of the parties falling in love with the garden and envisaging family weddings taking place (albeit in 20 plus years) and nothing could shift her from that purchase.

future gain can often be disappointed when the amount of money they put into fixing it up or on chattels to furnish it eats up any future profit. It doesn’t make sense to buy the most expensive and beautiful curtains only to find a new purchaser cares little for your taste or your ‘need’ to get back every cent you spent on them. It seems like common sense, but emotion and logic can collide like that.

Logic had no place in this deeply emotional buy, much as it had no place in the purchase of a property by two frail and ageing clients who decided on a home with multiple flights of narrow stairs, but a view you could only dream of. On the face of it, it didn’t make sense, but who am I or any of us to judge?

Great realtors are often great communicators that can assist a logical analytical purchaser brilliantly but also guide an emotional buyer in their choices.

So it’s fair to say emotion will always play a part in the world of real estate, but the other big player is its nemesis, logic.

I’m always deeply emotional about buying a family home and tough on potential investment purchases. I guess you could say there’s room for a foot in both camps and a world of choice. Make good ones! In the meantime, keep warm and enjoy your home.

Investors are very rarely emotional. They require a strong analytic framework to determine whether a property stacks up, if returns are viable and if a profit can be made. Emotional purchasers who look for an investment property hoping for a great

lovers Calling all cactus By Kate Pierson

Come winter, cactus owners may find themselves in an even pricklier situation than usual.

T

he strong, edgy looking plant seems to have won a popularity contest as it’s been popping up here, there and everywhere. Given its palpable relevance to in and outdoor décor right now, we thought a piece on the winter-hardy type of cacti (think ball cactus, prickly pear,

1.

and barrel cactus) would be fitting, so let’s get right to the point - they might have a tough persona, but cactuses also have a sensitive side. To that end, we’ve put together a list of tips so you can put your green fingers to good use this winter.

Like humans, cacti like to take a more laid back approach to life come winter – with that in mind, don’t overwater your cacti. They tend to remain dormant, and as such, don’t need water as much. If you get a bit too exuberant with the watering can, you might find your cacti start to rot.

2. 3.

Let the light shine in – a cool, dry and light environment is the best kind of companion to cacti in winter so it stays in shape – literally speaking. If in doubt, cover up – just as we like to feel cosy in winter, so do some cacti. If you don’t have a greenhouse for them to retreat to, or you don’t want to bring them inside, a frost cloth is essential for the more sensitive types.

A SCANDINAVIAN sensation By Kate Pierson

It’s an expression bandied about a lot lately – but what exactly does ‘Scandinavian’ décor mean? While we’re not wedded to one particular definition, we do feel that the favoured aesthetic has some key characteristics. www.freedomfurniture.co.nz

the aesthetic, prepare to become betrothed to the beautiful look and feel of this inspiring concept. The Scandinavian craze sweeping the globe is by no means a contemporary phenomenon. Having emerged in the 1950s, the design harks back to the Nordic countries including Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

1.

• Zahra 3 Seat Sofa • Wing Chair in Hunter Tan • Leather Pouffe 50x50x35cm in Tan • Nova Rug 160x230cm in Stone • Arles Clock 101cm Scandinavian interior options promote the use of what is distinctly organic – from light toned wood to rugged throws and carpets; the look is intentionally pared back. Neutrality is key with hints of eclecticism where appropriate. We have some key top tips for channelling a Scandi look in your home that will easily stand the test of time:

Embrace the light: industrial style lighting is a true hallmark of this trend and we have a real penchant for the pendant kind. Simple and practical might be key, but that doesn’t have to mean bland or boring. A pendant light is a single light fixture suspended from the ceiling by a cord or a chain, but multiples can be clustered together for a bolder and brighter look. Love lines: Scandinavian décor is adored for its clean, straight lines – minimalism is key. The true protagonists of this theme are the furniture pieces that marry simple lines with down to earth materials. Ditch the clutter: the original pioneers and current leaders of the Scandinavian design movement would have heart palpitations over a cluttered home attempting to embrace the look. A busy Scandinavian style home is an oxymoron – a non-cluttered look is the only way forward if you want to commit to the design cause. Purchase with purpose rather than wild abandon – your home and your bank account will thank you for it. We’ve also put together a taste of what awaits on your Scandinavian adventure should you accept the challenge. We’d love for you to share your interpretations of the trend with us on our Facebook page – simply upload your picture with #metropolhome and we’ll pick our favourite look and share it with our community! Happy decorating.

While it’s unlikely to have a transient nature, we’d also suggest you don’t go too wild introducing this metallic into the mix at home as less is definitely more when it comes to gold whether you opt for yellow gold or the coolest kid on the block right now – rose gold. The best part is that gold can most certainly be friends with the timeless hue, silver. If you’d like to dip your toe into the mixed-metallics pond, then striking silver and gold frames adorning your walls or wall units is a fabulous start.
