LIGHTS UP! By Céline Gibson

When the February 2011 earthquake struck Christchurch, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas was being performed at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre at the University of Canterbury; it never got finished, due to immediate building evacuations.

N

ow it is expected that play will be performed again when the new Ngaio Marsh Theatre opens within

the new University of Canterbury Students’ Association (UCSA) building, Haere-roa, in 2019.

Our focus has always been to regain a space fit for purpose.” The theatre will be a flexible space with seating capacity for 300 or 1,000 people standing. Apart from performances and concerts, it will also host meetings and events for the UCSA’s 130 affiliated clubs and societies. Most wonderfully, wood that was removed from the original theatre will feature in the new foyer and theatre, as well as historic posters and photos. James envisages a grand opening for the new Ngaio Marsh Theatre, and yes, there may well be a certain famous Kiwi film star making an appearance! Information: www.ucsa.org.nz/ourhome

With work already commenced on Haereroa (which translates to the longest stream or the long wanderer), students and theatre lovers can be assured that the Ngaio Marsh Theatre won’t be far behind. “Our focus has always been to regain a space fit for purpose,” says James Addington, President of UCSA. “The Ngaio Marsh Theatre was a massive part of the university, and the hub of student life. Sam Neil, who’s very supportive of its reestablishment, said the theatre played a huge role in developing his acting career.”

Fresh out of a successful first exhibition, held at Exchange (XCHC) Christchurch Café, Alice chats with Metropol about the beginning of what is bound to be an extraordinary career.

Your artwork is extraordinary! How did you break into such a competitive industry? Thank you! I’m not so sure I have ‘broken into’ the industry as such, although more commission work does seem to be coming my way. For me it’s more about doing something that I love and putting it out into the world - but it’s definitely a bonus when people like what I’m doing! I think it also helps that I work in the creative industry (I’m a graphic designer), so I get to use some of my illustrative skills at work and this gets me a bit of extra exposure. What stokes your imagination? Lots of things! Beautiful faces, fashion and nature are where I get most of my ideas. I’ve been loving Moroccan tiles and strangely, beetle wings, at the moment so many vibrant colours and interesting patterns. I have an insane amount of Pinterest boards so I’m always adding inspiration from typography, branding, make up looks and outfits right through to weird things like cool doors from around the world. How would you describe the genre of your work? Conceptual portraits inspired by the fashion and beauty industry. The work is usually quite feminine and contemporary.

A marriage of pop culture and her restless, constantly innovating imagination have imbued artist and graphic designer Alice Ferner’s conceptual portraits with passion and power.

Do you create in a freestyle context or are your pieces commissioned? Generally I will see something or someone

I really like the look of and get so excited that I need to draw it! Selling work is never really my end goal, I do it because I love it, but I have been receiving more commissions which are actually a lot of fun. It’s really interesting taking a request from someone and turning it into your own piece of work. It can be a challenge, but that is half the fun, and people have great ideas. What have been some of your happiest milestones on your artistic journey? Probably the most recent one which was having my first solo exhibition. I was so nervous, but it turned out really well and I sold quite a bit which was reassuring. I think it has boosted my confidence. Also just seeing your own progression as an artist - it’s awesome to be able to see how far you’ve come.

4.

2.

Do you have any particular mentors that you look to for guidance or creative enlightenment? I definitely have other artists who inspire me. My two favourites are Kelly Thompson and Lisa King who are both in Australia. I pretty much learnt digital drawing from a tutorial Kelly Thompson did. They are both such girl bosses. Lisa now does a lot of large scale murals, which is so daunting, but I’d love to try it some day! Do you have any particular projects on the horizon you can share with us? Just a couple of commissions at the moment! I also do freelance design jobs on the side so it can be tricky juggling it all and working full time. What is a favourite saying or mantra you embrace in your career? Get sh*t done!

PREPARATION

When Milena Bartlett of Harcourts talks about preparing a property for sale, it pays to listen. A believer in meticulous planning, she’s managed a 100 percent sale success with all her individual listings.

T

rue property preparation is more fundamental than simply presentation work. Milena’s first piece of advice is to get your ducks in a row. In Canterbury right now, the most important preparatory work involves ordering all of your property’s paperwork, which can take several weeks to receive. Buyers will unfailingly want to see the Earthquake Commission Scope of Works for the property. This can be requested by a simple phone-call to the EQC. However, it can take seven working days to get. And that’s not all. Buyers will obviously want to scrutinise the work’s sign-off papers, from the repairers. Obtaining these can take up to 21 working days.

“You absolutely don’t want obstructions to a potential sale by putting a house to market without its supporting paperwork. I also encourage sellers to have the Land Information Memorandum (LIM) ready for potential buyers. We all need reassurance that every part of a property has received the proper consents, particularly under prior ownerships,” Milena says. The next thing is to talk over any plans for pre-sale renovation spending with your agent. “Good agents know what will and won’t make a difference to the price achieved. Some ‘upgrades’ don’t, so be guided by your professional,” Milena urges. Personally, she loves to guide...to help people move successfully onward.

“I

We have always been at the forefront of keeping up with changes in heating, with technical developments and design trends, and our refreshed space is a reflection of this.” As you enter the showroom your eyes are immediately drawn to two of the stylish new fires – and they are quite simply stunning. compact gas fires that come in either 600mm or 700mm and with different frame options. They are suitable for both new homes, or for fitting into an existing chimney.” Long-established gas fire brand Jetmaster has now introduced a handy remote control to electronically operate its On/Off ignition. “This is a real plus for lovers of Jetmaster Fires. INSPIRING EDUCATION

In an environment that now recognises a one-size-fits-all format is not the way to educate people, Hagley College may have been well ahead of its time.

H

agley is a designated character school, which means it is a state school that has a particular character which sets it apart from ordinary state schools. Hagley’s character is that not only does it recognise students as unique individuals; it actively encourages diversity, and enables students to design their own programme from a diverse range of subjects such as art, music, theatre or animation and design. It is a dynamic place where no-one wears a uniform, everyone is on a first name basis, and success comes in many shapes and forms. Hagley is also much more than just a high school. In addition to the core curriculum subjects offered to students in Years 9-13, some of whom are studying at multiple levels; it also offers a wide range of learning options to students of any age. Through its tertiary pathways programmes, the school has helped

hundreds of students move successfully into tertiary study. There is Catch Up College, which enables students to get credits necessary to step into tertiary study, or its UC@Hagley tertiary transition programme to help get to the University of Canterbury. After 3 is an opportunity to study a wide range of courses away from daytime commitments such as work and childcare. Whether for career advancement, special interest, or for entry into tertiary level programmes, Hagley offers students the opportunity to establish new directions or pick up where they left off educationally. The school really does live out its mission statement, ‘lifelong learning that’s accessible to all.’ See www.hagley.school.nz for more information on courses available. There is a Senior College Information Evening on 31 September, from 5 to 7pm.

We’ve got your next step sorted.

Take the next step with one of Hagley’s tertiary pathway programmes or specialist courses. From Engineering and Sports and Recreation to Cuisine, Fashion, Pre-Health and Animation, Hagley has a range of courses designed to pathway you to tertiary study or help you gain real skills for work. Visit our website today for more information on your study options for 2018!

day of celebration, with Addington hosting a spectacular day of racing, entertainment, fashion extravaganza, food and wine. It’s New Zealand’s equivalent of the Melbourne Cup. The day provides an opportune time to dress up and thank valued clients, staff and friends, and network with others. Addington offers an outstanding range of hospitality options to enable you to do just this. Choices range from the Lindauer Reserve Mini Marquees, which are ideal for those looking for a more relaxed informal environment in which to enjoy the day, through to one of the more prestigious racing and entertainment packages on the outer track. Due to the Johnny Globe Marquee being sold out and high demand for this area, Addington have just released an additional venue, the ‘Monkey King Marquee’. This stylish marquee, located on the outer track, is superbly appointed and includes allocated seating, premium catering, all beverages, access to the Lancôme Beauty Lounge, Master of Ceremonies, live entertainment and more. The medical edge to beauty

ANTI-AGEING TREATMENTS

Non-invasive lifting and tightening of the face

Appearance medicine is a rapidly growing area of medicine with new and improved treatments to reverse the signs of ageing being developed constantly. With so much information out there it’s hard to know which treatments are going to give you the best results for your time and money.

$100 OFF ULTHERAPY FDA APPROVED

Everyone wants firmer, stronger and glowing skin as it makes you look youthful and healthy. To achieve this, there is the V2 Beauty Booster treatment. The treatment involves injecting a unique hyaluronic acid that hydrates and repairs the dermis into the skin of the entire face with the V2 injection device. The hyaluronic acid includes a patented formula of natural components - amino acids, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins - and it’s this combination that helps to optimise DNA synthesis and stimulate collagen production giving skin a fabulous glow! When clients say, ‘I look older than I really am’ it can be very disconcerting. One of the most common ‘trouble spots’ is the lower face and neck. In fact, a change in the contour of the jawline is one of the first things ageing clients say they notice when they look in the mirror. The formation of jowls, the degeneration of soft tissue cells, and the sinking in of the chin are all connected to collagen deficiencies. Now there is Ultherapy which is the only non-invasive procedure, FDA-cleared, to lift skin on the neck, under the chin and jowls and around the eyes. Ultherapy uses the power of ultrasound to rejuvenate and lift these trouble spots!

BOLD + BEAUTIFUL: BEHIND THE SCENES By Kate Pierson

On a crisp winter’s morning in Christchurch, breath visible in the frigid air, an ambitious team embarked on a stylish expedition – to create a collection of inspiration rich, highfashion styled images. Photographer Paul Tatterson (www.paultatterson.com) started to work his magic before the moon had fully retired for the evening – busily preparing a Showbiz Christchurch studio with the perfect alchemy of a clean, modern backdrop and dream-like lighting. The objective? To create a chic, minimalist style aesthetic that would let the stunning wears tell the story. This year’s Bold + Beautiful theme is a tribute to the key styles of the current and upcoming seasons – an emphasis on structured lines, texture, embellishments and layers. A showcase of some of the city’s finest retailers, Metropol’s annual fashion spread brings together the best in the business. This year’s Stylist Jess Mundy (www.jessmundystylist.co.nz) led on the execution of the vision, collaborating with each of the participating retailers to select garments and accessories that would powerfully contribute to the overarching style story. Jess’ creative moodboards – one for each of the stunning models from Portfolio Model Agency (www.portfoliomodels.co.nz) - set a benchmark for hair and makeup which was delivered by industry veterans from Salon Parlour (www.salonparlour.co.nz). Each carefully curated look can be yours for the taking – we’ve included detailed garment descriptions on every page so you can make these highly coveted creations your own.

Colourful

SARTORIAL STYLE Rainbows of colour have always brightened up the day at Made in the Shade - but Ali and Sharon are in their element this spring with the latest vibrant hues.

C

olour, and all its delicious nuances, has arrived at the Beckenham fashion boutique. There are warm mustards, exotic tangerines, apple greens and fresh lemons, amongst the bold brights. Flattering, feel-good blue is a Made in the Shade staple - from nautically-inspired to more subtle hues and designs. And florals are blossoming in whimsical patterns. “I concentrate on natural fibres, which are more practical in warmer weather,” Ali says. “The new floaty silk tops and wide pants are so comfortable. And Bittermoon have great tops that go fabulously with our varied range of super-flattering Lissete L pants from Montreal that lift your bum and flatten your tum.” Ali has helped women create their wardrobes for over three decades. Along with Sharon’s expertise, clients of all ages seek their sassy

advice for individualised outfits from casual to special-occasion wear. “We stock only quality labels such as Optimum knitwear, which has brushed-cotton garments for smart spring layering - and absolutely no pilling. It’s so popular and sells fast, but we can order your chosen colour and style, in sizes up to 20.” Another favourite is Anne Mardell’s range in various sizes, hem lengths and fabrics, with some standout dresses for wedding season. “You can mix up colour and patterns,” says Ali, who is relishing this adventurous trend. “Spots, stars and stripes are still in – and I love wearing them all together.” For colourful inspiration visit Made in the Shade at 151 Colombo Street, or www.madeintheshadefashions.co.nz. Unlocking the Einstein inside!

The newly opened enhancement centre braiNZiac on Blenheim Road delivers exciting, intense and specific intervention programmes designed to unlock a student’s potential for learning and success. Over the past number of decades, scientists have tried to understand the brain and its performance… why? Every day we are bombarded with information - education, TV, computers, cellphones, and much more. So what do we do with that information? We have to process it, store it and respond to it - so the brain that we have can perform and function better, you ask? The answer is a definite ‘yes’. The braiNZiac Centre delivers BrainRx, arguably the only evidence based cognitive development programme in the world and the Sonday System programme, carefully

crafted to incorporate the essential components of reading, writing and spelling development. Built into the process are pre and post assessments for each programme that accurately identify specific weaknesses and outline the strengths of the individually tailored one-on-one training. The programmes are 12 weeks in duration and are designed to deliver improved cognitive processing and literacy abilities. Who are the programmes for? Everyone! The centre will see that the future for anyone in Christchurch is more about enriching and enhancing one’s life for learning, greater potential and enjoying life’s successes. A MILLION DOLLAR SMILE

uxton Dental’s caring and highly skilled dentists and hygienists focus on each patient’s individual needs to help them achieve a beautiful, healthy smile. Also, as we welcome spring, Cup and Show Week is just around the corner – followed by the festive season – so now is the time to focus on your appearance. A comprehensive consultation is provided after every new patient examination. The examination includes an in-depth assessment of: teeth, bone and gums, jaw joints and bite analysis, oral cancer screening, saliva testing, laser decay detection and dental risk assessment. Where appropriate, the patient receives a full written summary of the proposed personal treatment plan. The friendly and approachable team aims to educate the patient by discussing every treatment option in

detail, so they can make their own informed decisions. The extensive range of procedures available at the popular Riccarton-based practice include tooth whitening, straightening teeth, replacing old amalgams with white fillings, computer-generated porcelain fillings, or replacing teeth with various cosmetic makeover techniques. To achieve that great smile, Duxton Dental offers Invisalign – a series of clear, removable aligners – as an alternative to traditional metal or ceramic braces. The aligners are individually manufactured for each client’s particular teeth and changed every two weeks until they have straightened to the prescribed amount. Duxton Dental’s loyal clientele appreciate the thorough, professional and personal service they receive from the team. Children have been flocking to nature-based learning and developmental programme TimberNook. Designed to encourage creativity, imagination, and independent play in the outdoors, Kim Tenebaum introduced the TimberNook programmes to Christchurch at the beginning of the year.

R

egular contact with natural outdoor environments plays a significant role in children’s health and wellbeing, providing endless physical and mental benefits, including developing muscle strength and coordination, gaining selfconfidence and reducing stress. With 17 years of experience as a teacher, and a professional development facilitator, Kim, a mother of three, provides TimberNook programmes for all ages: playgroups for pre-schoolers, programmes during the school holidays for school aged children, birthday parties and special events. “I’ve seen a lot of learning and growth in the children who have been attending regularly,” says Kim, who recently ran sell-out programmes during KidsFest. TimberNook provides ‘Going Wild Weekends’ on Saturdays for a six-week block each term, aimed at children aged 5 to 11, who participate in team challenges

and icebreakers to settle into the day. “We always offer creative elements, and then at morning tea we tell stories to enhance literacy and communication skills. “A proportion of the session is free play in the forest with loose parts, where children integrate their decision-making skills with learning and exploring.” TimberNook also tailors sessions for school, early childhood and community groups. Regularly held at Cracroft Guiding Centre in Cashmere, the gorgeous wooded hillside is home to bellbirds and fantails, and features trails, rope swings, and a stream. “We provide a safe environment for the children to take appropriate ‘risks’. Every TimberNook session includes a creative element of problem solving, reinforcing that at TimberNook, ‘We don’t entertain, we empower’”. Follow on facebook.com/TimberNookChristchurch-NZ.

TRIBUTE TO LOVE

Love is universal and omnipotent. Its talismanic qualities have been a source of enduring preoccupation since the dawn of time and its power is right at the heart of The Wholehearted, a beautiful Massive Company show, on a 7-stop national tour from Tuesday 5 September.

M

assive Company, an innovative professional theatre company, was born from a desire to create theatre that defies the imagination; works that are full of vigour and heart. The Wholehearted is a compelling testament to this fact. The show will delight Christchurch audiences from 3-7 October at Papa Hou, the YMCA’s own art venture, as a brilliant ensemble of Kiwi talent brings stories of devotion – from the very young to the very old – to life. The awe-inspiring cast, inclusive of established actors Bree Peters (Shortland Street) and Scotty Cotter (The Rehearsal, Awatea, In My Father’s Den, Shortland Street), explores what people do in the pursuit of love and how love changes us. The Wholehearted was developed through conversations with the local community who generously donated their personal stories of affection and dedication. Massive Company’s Artistic Director, Sam Scott, says, “We make our shows

This show is transformative and fills its audiences with joy and hope about living.” for those who love to feel the impact of their theatre experience; who want meaning and connection through seeing stories that make them laugh and dream around their own lives. We make theatre for those who want less injury and more beauty in the world. “In this tricky, topsy turvy world of ours, The Wholehearted is a great antidote. This show is transformative and fills its audiences with joy and hope about living.”

“This is New Zealand theatre worth seeing.”

BELLBOTTOMS! The late seventies were a time of iconic energy that refused to be contained – John Travolta brought a new level of style to the white flared disco suit while Diana Ross’ retro wardrobe choices set the tone for the era.

T

he seventies represented a vibrant era of psychedelic colours, bellbottoms, Donna Summer hairstyles, liberation and love; culture at its boldest and brightest. As an inspiring tribute to these iconic times, Showbiz Christchurch is hosting a ‘70s Night on 22 September to coincide with its highly anticipated season of Sister Act, which is set in 1977. The show tells the story of wannabe disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, on the run from her gangster boyfriend. She hides in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and the uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco talents, Deloris inspires the nuns to create a contemporary choir, and they become the hit of the community. Word of their success reaches her exboyfriend, who tracks her down to the convent. A battle ensues between the mob and Deloris’s newly found sisterhood of feisty nuns. Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, Sister Act is a sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship. Seventies lovers are invited to dress up in their favourite outfit that pays homage to this era and come along to see the show (standard ticket prices apply). The night will be themed with a ‘70s disco vibe, spot prizes and a grand prize for the best costume of luxury Christchurch hotel accommodation and 2 x Premium Tickets for the first Showbiz show of 2018 are up for grabs.

what’s past the sign and up the sweeping driveway”. This will be Hohepa’s second exhibition. Gendy Brown organised the first one in 1975, with many now-famous artists at her grandfather Robert McDougall’s iconic art gallery. Named after him, Gendy’s son Angus McDougall ‘Dougie’ was adored for his cheeky smile by all at Hopeha for over four decades, before sadly passing away this year. Dougie’s sister, Lucy, joined the art fundraising committee so people like her brother can continue to receive Hohepa’s incredible support. Well-recognised names such as Bill Hammond will participate. Michael Eaton, who contributed in 1975, will be a guest artist along with Philip Trusttum. Philip even became inspired by Hopeha’s own Peter Chou as he draws with unique perspectives and detailing. Ian Neilson’s watercolours also exude talent. Artwork and crafts will be exhibited in the hall, and sculptures in the surrounding gardens. Until mid-September, original artworks can be submitted for this charitable community occasion. Visit www.hohepacanterbury.com or call Amelia on 03 332 3179 for details.

Michelin Star Magic By Nicholas Henare

There is one thing you can guarantee about the dining experience at Rata in in Queenstown and that’s quality.

M

ichelin Chef, Josh Emett, goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure the experience is something wonderful and the apex of each year’s effort has to come in the form of the Rata Long lunch, part of the Clicquot in the Snow with Veuve Clicquot.

Josh puts together a range of locally sourced food to accompany the finest of French champagnes. Like a gaggle of geese, luckily invited media gather around him to syphon titbits of information on why, when and how these dishes come Cont. next page.. together.

The Secret Garden

Welcome to Christchurch’s best kept secret... our sheltered, garden oasis at Dux Dine Share a Platter-for-Two, with a bottle or two of a crisp Pinot Gris or light Rose and make an afternoon of it. We will even provide the sunscreen and sun hats (plenty of parking, and free WiFi for your data addiction).

first course consisted of Hamachi Kingfish Crudo, Ora King Salmon Caviar with horseradish cream, and fennel with the Veuve Clicquot NV. This was a perfect pairing of champagne and fish. Next up - the seared bluff octopus, crispy pork shoulder with pickled beetroot and saffron aioli and the Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2008. We were told of the virtues of the 2008 as we ate a truly sublime dish. Third course was Te Mana lamb loin, fried sweetbread, butternut squash, coconut and vadouvan spice with the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Rose 2008. I have never tasted a lamb so good, never. Forth to be served was tamarillo compote, white chocolate whipped ganache and vanilla rosemary ice-cream with Veuve Clicquot Rose NV. The amazing thing about all these dishes, is that it takes an incredible amount of expertise to present just one plate. To present a whole restaurant shows that Josh and the team are true epicurean masters. As I nibbled away at macaroons and watched unfortunate people who failed to book for this event turned away at the door, I thought to myself how lucky I was and to remind you, that if you want to try something that is truly a one-off experience, then please, book your place at next year’s Rata Long Lunch. It’s part of Clicquot in the Snow. You won’t regret it.

The splendour of this extensively refurbished and strengthened house supports a natural heritage taking you back to a Christchurch of the 1930s. The house gardens are contoured by stone from the local Halswell quarry. The luxury boutique accommodation experience enters the international marketplace with elements of the Art Deco era and hopes to delight the high-end traveller without high-end tariffs.

cuisine If you have a hankering for something to cleanse your palate, Gumbo Wine Merchants can help. Founded by Sommelier Cashias Gumbo, the business is a Christchurch based wine distribution company with a bright future. The launch of new label, Heirloom Organic Wines, is part of an ever increasing portfolio. The wines will be hitting your shelf or your cellars early September and the project is a collaboration between Sommelier Cashias and Winemaker Haydon Good. Both young men have a passion for the wine industry and came together after realising the need to produce a wine that has a focus on guests. Organic wines were the answer. The project will see the boys craft wines using a “hands off ” approach. As if that was not enough, Cashias continues to challenge himself again. He is also leading a team of five wine experts over to France to battle it out at the fifth annual

World Blind Tasting Championship from 13 to 14 October, the first time New Zealand has entered a team in this prestigious event. “It’s the wine Olympics, and we will proudly raise the New Zealand flag high, and the team feels its mandate is to make New Zealand’s presence felt,” Cashias says. This event has been supported by Carnmore Hospitality Management and wine producers and received its Platinum Sponsorship from Giesen, Ara Wines and Pegasus Bay. For more information about this and everything Gumbo Wine Merchants has to offer, visit gumbowinemerchants.co.nz, email info@gumbowinemerchants.co.nz or call 021 158 7662.

SEPTEMBER SEES SOME FABULOUS MUSIC ACTS COMING CHRISTCHURCH’S WAY. It’s life-affirming when international bands include Christchurch in their tour line-ups. This month Portland Oregon-based band The Dandy Warhols will be performing at The Foundry on 19 September, before an Auckland performance the next day. Not to be overlooked, however, are our own home-grown talents. Many of these are spectacular. Matty Smith, who’ll be performing at Dux Central on 16 September, is a great example. Well versed in our national music scene, Matty has a powerful and heartfelt vocal contribution to make. After working with some stellar names including INXS and the CSO, he recently embarked on a solo song-writing and performing career. His trademark style probably defies definition, but seems to meld folk and alternative country.

Blum NZ customises space towers for anywhere in the home or office.

M

ost home-renovators or builders know what they like when it comes to kitchens or bathrooms. But Blum, an international company based in Austria, can tailor storage systems in a way that’s nothing short of perfect. Many New Zealand kitchen designers and architects are already working with the business. However, clients should always ask their architect or builder for top-quality storage mechanisms to be employed, according to Sophie Beets, of Blum New Zealand. Form and function will both be exceptionally engineered if Blum’s bespoke drawer systems, hinges and lift mechanisms are installed. A very ergonomic ‘Space Tower’ is a boon to any kitchen, maximising both kitchen flow and accessible storage. With sturdy, smooth-gliding drawers, anywhere from 275mm to 1200mm wide, space tower pantries can be single or double-doored, with five inner pull-out drawers. So why are space towers so good? Sophie says that years of research have gone into what humanity needs from kitchens. Drawers, rather than cupboards, provide best value and storage volume, especially below bench height. Even more ideal is that the brand’s internal pull-outs can withstand up to 70 kilos in tinned food, potatoes, or library returns. In short, space towers swallow a ton of daily clutter in addition to food items, if homeowners favour the streamlined look. For closer inspection, visit the showroom in Dalziel Place, Woolston. www.blum.com

BUILDING BEAUTIFUL

AWARD-WINNING HOMES Building a House of The Year, Gold award-winning home is not without its challenges. Fleetwood Construction, however, has done it twice, most recently in the 2017 awards announced in July. It also won a Silver award for another house in the same category.

explains. Sam, who has been building homes in Canterbury for over twenty-five years, established his multi-award winning construction company in 2003. Since then, the business has been building beautiful architectural homes in Canterbury, and has earned a solid reputation in the industry. The Gold award-winning house provided some challenges in the build phase. A family home split over five levels, on a hill site in Cass Bay, demanded exacting professional standards. Such standards are the backbone of Sam’s philosophy, and his company. Overcoming challenges, and working closely with clients, designers and architects are some of the things Sam enjoys most about what he does. The greatest reward is happy homeowners, and Fleetwood has many. Recognition by the industry is an added bonus. “As a smaller business, we really pride ourselves on maintaining that high quality across all of our projects, so we’re extremely pleased to have been recognised at this level,” Sam says. Fleetwood Construction is a Registered Master Builder, and is also a member of Site Safe. For more information and to contact Sam, see www.fleetwoodconstruction.co.nz or phone 0800 381 381

A SHIFT IN FOCUS Cymon Allfrey

A

ARCHITECT CYMON ALLFREY OUTLINES WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO HIM THIS ELECTION; AND WHY A SHIFT IN FUTURE THINKING NEEDS TO BE IMPORTANT TO YOU TOO.

s we all know it is election time. And for the first time that I can recall, I had a local candidate of a major party knock on my door. Having spent some time talking to him, covering a variety of topics, he asked me what was important to me when considering who I will vote for. Wanting to go beyond the traditional election cornerstones of education, transport, housing and poverty, I posed a concern over the economy in Christchurch. With recent findings indicating that in the wake of the earthquake the peak of activity across the construction sector is still to come, Christchurch is arguably operating in an artificial economy. As we ascend the peak and ultimately fall down the other side, what will happen

to this false economy? How will businesses like mine thrive without this energy of activity? Pre-quake it was common for architectural practices to forecast the year ahead, implementing budgets, staff plans and necessary precautions against a conservative estimation of workflow. Post-quake there has been a strong and consistent foundation on which to build off – a minimum amount of activity offering ongoing business certainty. Our challenge as the outlook changes, is to find a way to continue to instill certainty into our planning rather than reverting to the conservatism of old. At a central and local government level, we also need to be asking how, and what, the economic future of our city looks like;

WE NEED LEADERSHIP THAT FOCUSES ON FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES.

how we can create a sustainable business module in a declining environment; and how our leaders are inspiring us to achieve what needs to be done. Continuing my discussion with the local candidate I proposed that the solution was to be found in strong leadership. We are in a rebuild mindset and there is a risk that we will be absorbed in the current, or even worse, a retrospective view, and miss the opportunity to change. As a result we need leadership that focuses on future opportunities. Leadership that questions whether there is a better way to solve and overcome old problems. Architecturally we will be an exemplar of modern living, but this needs to be supported, enhanced and driven by aspirational leadership. I am not disputing that our local government is currently operating at a high strategic level. But in order for our city and our businesses to continue to do so, we need to look forward to a future without a false economy and ask ourselves what the solution to survival is. In a built sense, Christchurch is and will be, a wonderful environment in which to operate. The physical regeneration of the city will provide a new platform for business activity to thrive on, however to utilise this to its potential, businesses need to be challenged to question what future opportunities may exist, to be innovative and bold. Strong leadership will inspire us to grow and exceed our potential, ultimately bringing a new dynamic to our city. We have lived in the shadow of a natural disaster and recovery for seven years and will no doubt remain there for a few more. With our architectural environment being built with the future in mind, we need leadership to evolve the city to ensure it follows. www.caarc.co.nz Metropol August 31, 2017 63

We focus on having a really tightknit team, where the culture of the workplace is friendly, safety-aware, and active. We take pride in our work as well as in our reputation.”

your plans

Normally polar opposites, creativity and organisational skills cohabit within the Brownie Homes construction team.

W

ith a young, energetic staff of eight, Brownie Homes is a company which tackles both the big and the little. This sets it apart somewhat. Many Canterbury homeowners have in the past few years abandoned hope of achieving their desired residential or renovation projects, assuming no-one in the construction fraternity would be available. Site Manager Joshua Lee, along with Director James Brownie, would like people to know there is absolutely no need to procrastinate on building. Joshua says every build project, no matter its scale, is a worthwhile challenge. The business has recently built houses in Mt Pleasant, Kirwee, Darfield, Redcliffs, Marshlands, Waikuku, and Wanaka. So the geography of a project is no bar to it either.

Great organisational systems underpin the work output, such as colour-coded timelines on different house jobs. These are displayed in the new offices in Talfourd Place, Waltham. “We focus on having a really tightknit team, where the culture of the workplace is friendly, safety-aware, and active. We take pride in our work as well as in our reputation,” Joshua says. A medium-spec house takes approximately 16 weeks to build, he adds. The key to this is a great supply-chain of the different trades. The Brownie builders tackle the landscaping also, and if required, even without a formalised plan! “Our group is committed to a mix of good planning, timeliness and craftsmanship.” Check out browniehomes.co.nz.

he company earned a reputation for integrity and excellence after it was established four years ago, attracting a large clientele in a short time, due to an abundance of word-of-mouth referrals. The multi-skilled duo is currently repairing a two-storey leaky home in Avonhead for a client ready to sell their investment property. The team discovered the core of the building was rotten, due to cracked plaster cladding. “This allowed water inside the building for a long time,” says Adrian, who has carried out structural damage repair to the house; added bracing; re-cladded and insulated; as well as replaced windows, guttering,

fascia, and untreated timber. “There have been a number of complexities around this project, but we have bought it up to the current building code, while making sure we stay within the client’s budget – saving client’s money and time is a very important part of what we do.” Well-known for their meticulousness, the team members are often called on to rectify inadequate work or to take on challenging or difficult projects that have been turned down by other tradesmen – there really isn’t anything Innovate Renovate can’t do. The legendary and iconic Fiat 500 has celebrated its 60th birthday this year.

B

uilt to take advantage of Italy’s post war economic boom, the first 500 rolled off the production line at Fiat’s Mirafiori plant in Turin for the first time on 4 July 1957 and went on to achieve cult status. Powered by tiny 500cc four cylinder engines, mated to a four speed gearbox, and featuring next to no creature comforts at all, it was the last word in inexpensive utilitarian transport for the masses. During its first production run, which ended in 1975, almost four million 500s were sold internationally, a staggering 400,000 of which can still be found on Italian roads today. More than 5000 of the original Fiat 500 spent their lives in New Zealand, and in 1964, one Fiat 500 even found itself helping in Antarctica at New Zealand’s Scott base. In 2007, Fiat brought the 500 back from the dead, reimagining the classic design and adapting it to suit the 21st century. While packing considerable more grunt and standard kit than its predecessor, it has proved to be a winner with drivers young and old. Back in 1960 the Fiat 500 was the cheapest new car in New Zealand, priced at 499 pounds. Today in New Zealand the Fiat 500 is available in five versions with prices starting at $19,990 for the entry level 500 pop.

as I thought about it, it could have been a terrible end for me. Had this been my own car, that 60kg animal more than likely would have destroyed my front right wheel, and at that speed… not pleasant. My drive back to Christchurch was a lot more subdued with thoughts of Ms Piggy’s demise. But the reason you should hire the right vehicle for the right job was very clear. If you are going on an adventure and you don’t think your car is up to it, Europcar has some great options that are well maintained and up to the challenge.

motoring

I

was introduced to Europcar through the Epass VW that you can get free through the Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland International Airports, and they suggested on my trip to Queenstown I try out a “rental experience”. Well, the first question I had was, ‘Why?’ I can either fly or take my own car, right? Then I started thinking about the trip; skiing, fishing, Tekapo and the lake areas I wanted to visit. To experience it, I couldn’t fly. Take my own car? I soon found out why taking a Europcar hire vehicle was the wise choice. I got to choose from the fleet, but my drive down was in the stunning Mercedes GLE diesel 250 d4matic, 150kW and all-wheel drive. You pick your keys up from the Europcar counter at the airport and walk out to your vehicle in an allocated spot. I’ve driven the GLE before, but never on such a long journey, and five hours in an average car can seem a lot longer. The Mercedes GLE is built for comfort as well as driving so my stops along the way were limited to truly stunning views of the Southern Alps. Arriving at Queenstown Airport, I transferred over to a Ford Everest 3.2L, 145Kw SUV so that my access to ski fields and the back roads of Queenstown would be more accessible. This was a wise choice. As the weather closed in, and my adventures grew, the 225mm ground clearance and 4WD was going to come in handy. But that’s when it happened. At 100kmh, on my return to Queenstown, a wild boar ran headlong into the front of the Ford. No time to react, I went over the poor creature. A terrible end for the boar, but

I SOON FOUND OUT WHY TAKING A HIRE @nickhenare VEHICLE WAS THE WISE CHOICE.

PRACTICALITY MEETS BEAUTY

Jaguar’s groundbreaking new I-PACE Concept has created quite a buzz at the 16th North American Concept Vehicles Awards, with the all-electric concept car being named Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2017.

H

eld at the Concours d’Elegance of America, the awards showcase vehicles most likely to be in the forefront of future motoring. Of the vehicles on show, each of which was introduced during North America’s premier auto shows, including Detroit and Los Angeles, the I-PACE Concept won outright, achieving the highest overall score.

Seemingly taking styling cues from the F-PACE SUV and XE executive saloon, Jaguar say the I-PACE takes full advantage of the packaging freedom offered by electrification. Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design, said: “Our challenge was to design an electric vehicle that’s distinctively and unmistakably a Jaguar – and one which demonstrates that an electric vehicle

can be visually dramatic as well as practical. I think that the Jaguar I-PACE Concept has done exactly that, and is clearly at the forefront of the trend for more beautiful, more desirable electric vehicles.” Expected to go into production in the second half of 2018, the I-PACE could very well be a familiar sight on our roads in the near future.

Well that’s

TORN IT!

What’s worse than a tear in your upholstery in your fine motor vehicle? It sounds like the opening line to a stupid joke, but a tear in your classic car’s rich leather can send a shiver through your wallet or purse.

T

here are enough costs in running a motor vehicle, but one of the most frustrating to pay for are interior wear and tear costs… especially a tear. I’ve replaced whole seats in the past when I’ve been lucky enough to find them for some of my vintage ownerships, but these days as cars get older and seats get rarer, what do you do? I was looking on Facebook and spotted some interesting ‘before and after’ shots of some interior repairs so contacted Grant Magrath at Vinyl Restorations for a chat. I asked him, “What’s the hardest job you’ve come across?” He said, “Hmmm... Probably repairing a tiny scratch on a leather steering wheel on a brand-new Porsche Cayenne. Talk about delicate! “It turns out most tears and damage can be repaired. In extreme cases, new

panels of a matching grain can be sewn in by an auto trimmer, and perfectly colour matched and sprayed by me.” It’s the same for new replacement parts, i.e. plastic panels and silver trim can be resprayed new colours to match your car. But the most common repair? “It’s a tossup between removing scratches from SUV rear compartments, repairing holes in dashes, and recolouring worn steering wheels.” Is it expensive? “Put it this way, how much does a new Cayenne steering wheel cost? The one mentioned above was saved for $90 and to respray a steering wheel or a worn seat, $60. Very different from a replacement.” Grant was great to talk with, but even better on detailing “miracle” repairs. My days of searching through wreckers’ yards are gone for good.
