Lynette McFadden W

ith a dynamic personality, natural business acumen,

tireless positivity and a wide smile never far from

flashing, Lynette McFadden is a leader in the field of

Christchurch business women. Since 1994, when she embarked on her career in real estate, Lynette (‘Polly’ to her friends) has earned an enviable reputation as an absolute professional and inspiring mentor. Along with her husband John McFadden she runs the Harcourts’ Gold Papanui office on a daily basis. They were the first Harcourts’ NZ duo to be inducted into the Harcourts’ Hall of Fame. Lynette was ranked among the top Canterbury salespeople and, with her interpersonal skills and work ethic, she has mentored and coached many of the Harcourts’ Gold consultants to outstanding results. She has been nominated for Maori Businesswoman of the Year (Ngati Tama, Te Ati Awa, Te Atihauni a Paparangi), had her story told in two books, accepted various public speaking engagements and presented at two international Harcourts’ conferences on leadership and achievement. What you may not know is that Lynette has carved this very successful career from humble working class roots…

You come from a traditional Maori family. What led you into the world of real estate? I’d been doing up houses with my husband and our real estate agent inspired me, as did encouragement from John. My folks were supportive, but worried about me leaving nursing. Taking a risk and launching the Papanui Harcourts office had its challenges. Did you envisage this bold move would lead you to the success you now enjoy? No. We started with 5 agents, 17 listings and a massive loan. Today there are 5 offices, over 90 people and a huge reputation for excellence. It is a very competitive market. What qualities do you need to succeed? Do what you say you are going to do – because so many people don’t. Try not to take rejection personally. There will be plenty of it. Have a plan. Smile. Your husband joined you in real estate after two years. What are the strengths of your partnership? I consider it a privilege to work alongside John. We have complementary skills, specific and different roles and we communicate well with each other. Plus I fancy him.

OUT & ABOUT

Real estate has opened up a world of possibility for me and my family.

The real estate business is very demanding. Do you turn your phone off and take time out very often? Rarely off and if I don’t answer it, it’s because I can’t find it in my handbag! On a more personal note, what is your favourite item of clothing? A black tuxedo jacket that was made for me 8 years ago.

Looking back what were the biggest obstacles you have had to overcome? The biggest obstacles I’ve faced were trying to operate our business in the period including both big earthquakes and the next 18 months. I also struggled when our business partner of 10 years decided to leave. What do you love most about the real estate industry? I love the fact I’ve made a difference to the lives of people I work with and those I’ve worked for. Real estate has opened up a world of possibility for me and my family. What is your key role within Harcourts’ Gold Papanui on a daily basis? My key roles are marketing, auction, high performance coaching and ‘magic’ (also known as making things special). What are your comments on the current property market in Christchurch? Dynamic and diverse are the terms that come to mind. This includes the emergence of completely new categories of properties for sale. For example “As is – Where is”, or uninsured homes. There’s also massive redevelopment in the inner city and strengthened property values throughout the region. Finally realtors must know their stuff. This is also a complex market place.

What is your proudest achievement? My marriage and my sons. What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, “I shouldn’t be doing this”? Looking on the internet for clues about who is going to get killed off next in Game of Thrones. If you had a crystal ball, what would you expect the property market in Christchurch to look like in five years’ time? My crystal ball broke a few years ago and I prefer to interpret the market than imagine it, but here goes: Ÿ A resurgent and dynamic inner city with a wide range of occupants enjoying apartment living Ÿ A lift in the upper-end price bracket consolidated by the values of significant rebuilds and new builds in blue chip suburbs like Fendalton Ÿ More rental properties and first-time landlords Ÿ Fewer real estate consultants and less council red tape Ÿ A proud positive local population

What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? When I was still nursing I played for a nurses’ indoor basketball team and Steve Hanson was our coach. (I was useless.) What is your favourite drink? Champagne Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Christchurch? Formal – The George Casual and relaxed – Brigitte’s What is one thing you would like to see in the ‘new’ Christchurch? A convention centre What are you like at parties? On time with gifts for the hosts What’s next on your wish list? A Christmas break with my beloved family and folks in Wanaka

Beauty There is a surprising mixture of devastation, beauty and serenity in the nine photographs taken in Christchurch just after the February 2011 earthquake, which are now on exhibition in the main atrium at The Tannery.

“It’s acknowledging what the city used to be like by showing what was left,” says Christchurch photographer Sabin Holloway, who had been given access to the red-zone area in the centre of the city that had been sealed off. Eight of the nine photographs were taken within the CBD and another one at Lyttelton. “All the photos meant something to me. I had worked or lived in these places and the photos became personal. I found it quite hard to photograph them. I was in shock. My head didn’t

photographer Sabin Holloway know where it was at, but there was a lot of beauty in them,” says Sabin. The pictures include a cherub in Poplar Lane; the front door of Shands Emporium, which has since been moved from Hereford Street to Manchester Street; Stranger’s Lane, at the corner of High and Lichfield Streets; and naked mannequins hanging inside the window at Plume, the fashion designer in High Street. “I started taking the photos because I was going to Waiheke Island to see my sister and wanted to show her what had happened to the city. I then continued to get passes to enter the red zone. I was doing some salvage work there, but always carried a camera,” says Sabin.

“I didn’t realise then that there were no other photographers allowed in to document the area. It’s a shame when you think about it now, because lots of those buildings are gone. I’ve got 3000 to 4000 photos. It’s now four-and-a-half years since the quake and lots of people have been encouraging me to show them for a long time. It was Alasdair Cassels, owner and developer of The Tannery, who has pushed me to do it.” Large prints of the photographs, measuring 1.35m by 0.9m, are suspended in The Tannery atrium and will be on display into September.

While first impressions of The Homestead at Annandale in picturesque Pigeon Bay are striking, it’s not ‘one thing’ that shouts luxury five-star. Rather it’s a gentle layering of quality surrounds, attention to detail, a serene ambience and the gradual awareness that nothing is left to chance...

But, I’m getting ahead of myself. I experienced a stay with a small group (3 couples) recently after my husband won a bid at a charity auction. What was a whimsy at the time became a gem of a weekend in a muddle of mundane wintery weeks. Annandale is a working farm of around 4000 acres which happens to have over ten kilometres of breath-taking views along a coastline that looks across the deep blue Pacific towards Christchurch and up to The Kaikouras. The Homestead, which is located across a private bridge in an extensive wooded area and surrounded by gardens, is near the Pigeon Bay Boating Club. It was built in the 1880s and has been immaculately restored in keeping with its historic pedigree. A plethora of rooms, high-ceilinged hallways, a sweeping staircase, gorgeous

wallpaper, drapes and antique mirrors surround you, with the comfort of all the mod cons that are strategically ‘invisible’. The hosts Lyndsay Jobin, general manager; and Paul Jobin, private chef, encourage you to embrace the feeling of The Homestead being your own. To make use of the elegant rooms, lounging furniture, candle-ware, beautiful glassware and silver; to pick some salad leaves or lemons from the garden and live like it’s 1884 and all of your needs are taken care of. Indeed you could easily let your imagination wander to an historic murdermystery fantasy. Could a mysterious history have been formed at one point? And would the assailant have been Colonel Mustard with the candlestick in the dining room, Professor Plum in the butler’s pantry or perhaps Mrs White in the swimming pool and spa area by one of the two outdoor fire settings? Each of the people in the group I was with experienced The Homestead in their own various ways: choosing to have an energetic game of tennis, a meander in the vegetable garden, a stroll along overhung paths or simply some rest and respite from a busy week. Our dinner was Annandale’s “We create, you serve” option and chef Paul Jobin had created a delicious three course dinner which was left in our fridge with detailed instructions on heating and plating. The wine list at Annandale is extensive and won’t disappoint, or you can take your own favourites if you prefer.

After banqueting at the enormous dining table with silver candelabra flickering and fires roaring we retired to the library where festivities continued long into the night. There was something about having the Homestead to ourselves which allowed us to relax entirely and enjoy the company of friends. Next morning Lyndsay and Paul picked us up in their four-wheel drive vehicles to take us on an expedition on the farm. Winding roads, steep drops and stunning views made it an invigorating morning, before returning to cook our gourmet breakfast. A turn of croquet, a final stroll around the gardens and all too soon it was time to tear ourselves from a weekend that will linger long in our memories as a refreshing fix of luxurious country life, all just an hour from the city.

I have just completed a one week journey in the fabulous region of Burgundy and my choice of area did not disappoint. Surrounded by a lush landscape of vineyards and quaint villages we

discovered all that this region has to offer. Travelling at a speed of no more than 10km per hour you can glide along the canals, stop to explore villages and local chateaux all from the comfort of your floating home. Knowing our route would take us to the village of Chagney in central Burgundy I took the opportunity to book one of the top rated restaurants in all of France. 'Maison Lameloise' rated 3 stars by Michelin, has long been a member of Michelin with its first star being awarded back in 1926. Our six course degustation menu took just over five hours to complete. With

dishes comprising of lobster served in a nectar of tomato and strawberries and foie gras encased in thin strips of potatoes, our taste buds were awakened with each bite and we were taken to new places discovering combinations and flavours never before tasted. Each course was expertly matched with local wines, proudly recommended by our sommelier. For me life is about these small delights that create memories that will last a lifetime. Travelling gets you to these places so you can explore not just the sights, but also the smells and tastes of a country. Bon appétit!

IN THE CITY WHAT’S ON BARS & CAFÉS WHAT’S NEW ART RETAIL DOWNTOWN

A NEW BREED OF HOTEL BreakFree on Cashel is a welcome sight on the Christchurch skyline following an extensive refurbishment and structural upgrade of the former Hotel So. The $30 million development offers a new breed of hotel for travellers to the Garden City.

D

Richard D alman Managing directo Dalman ar chitecturre Ltd

alman Architecture was engaged as architects and interior designers to create a new look both inside and out. Their first act was to modernise the front façade with a series of aluminium fins which create an interesting pattern and give the building a strong presence and modern look. The retention of some original building elements not only connects to what was on the site before, telling a story about the history of the building, but is also a costeffective way to create a new contemporary look. To enhance the sense of arrival, the low height entrance was visually opened up to two storeys, with the construction of a Corten clad “portal”. Under this on the ground floor a new wind lobby and glazed doors open the interior up to the street to attract not only house guests but the public, critical for the success of food and beverage in modern hotels.

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism CEO Tim Hunter says “The BreakFree on Cashel is a very pleasant break from the norm in hotel design. The mix of materials, unabashed use of colour and chic furniture makes it feel like you're in the newest pad on the block.”

Design and fabrics Fashionistas rejoice. For those who believe it's only appropriate to welcome spring with a flurry of designer fashions, you'll be pleased to know that's exactly what brand new and exclusive boutique Forza Viva is doing out of their location at The Hub.

T

This is the perfect place to makeover your wardrobe with many an option for work and play.

he Forza Viva brand originated in Milan, Italy. Its European roots are easily recognisable in the use of fine fabrics and flawless cuts that dominate its luxurious collections – collections inspired by the “retro glam of the French Riviera, figure-hugging dresses of the 1950s and wide silk pants of the 1970s…we pick timeless styles,” they say. Their summer 2014 collection featured in Hong Kong Fashion Week, promptly putting them on the industry radar. The combination of quality textiles and effortlessly edgy designs have seen the garments become hugely popular in Japan and Russia. And now, thanks to store owner Martin, Forza Viva can be found here in New Zealand. Forza Viva may have opened its doors at The Hub only three months ago, but it has quickly made its way to customers' lists of places to frequent. Located in the newly renovated extension to Hornby Mall is the modern and well laid-out space that entices customers with 'specials' at the front – handy for those looking to quickly purchase basics and bargains – with the rest of the clothing displayed on the walls and throughout the store.

Our passion, your flair.

effortlessly combined By Lydia Truesdale

Martin and store manager Angela have worked hard to pull together a portfolio of looks that complement the tastes of many cultures, namely Kiwi, Asian and European. As the winter apparel leaves the shelves it is replaced by contrasting spring collections. Bold aesthetics rule the runway this season in the form of vibrant patterns, dreamy silhouettes, clean lines, layering and depth. There are many styles and sizes on offer that team with New Zealand's laidback lifestyle. Choosing between feminine, corporate and casual may seem hard when there's ample appealing

options for each, but with many new garments priced as low as $30 you'd be forgiven for just getting them all. On that note, this is the perfect place to makeover your wardrobe with many an option for work and play. Spring and all its splendorous warmth and compelling visuals tends to reinvigorate people, igniting a motivation to look and feel better. And we all know that replacing your wardrobe with contemporary and flattering pieces is one of the easiest ways to reflect this. As the sort of cherry-on-thetop is a selection of shoes and accessories sprinkled throughout. Having the added luxury of being able to complete the outfit right then and there is just one of the many things customers duly appreciate at this modern boutique. For the customers who like a little guidance when shopping, the friendly team of staff – who speak a mixture of English and Mandarin – are able to draw on their years of experience in the fashion industry to provide helpful assistance in choosing the best options. GLAMOUR with ease “Keep me up till five only because all your stars are out, and for no other reason.” - J.D Salinger, Seymour: An Introduction

M

uch can be said for life's more fluid moments. When seven hours goes by in the same number of minutes. When we live deep, and own time with a knowing smile. When a gathering becomes a party and we wish it would never end. When we shrug on glamour, and take charge of what we wear. The euphoria and self-confidence that exist in such moments encouraged designer Emily Miller-Sharma when designing Liam's SS15 collection All Your Stars Are Out, which owes its essence to the above quote by author J.D Salinger. This season, wherever the self-assured Liam

woman goes, fun follows. It has emerged as a collection poised for a good time, with a nod toward the movement and casual ease of the seventies. There are silhouettes that tease the eye's curiosity, while still adhering to the label's hallmarks of clean lines and elegance. Bold cuts, most celebrated in the oversized flared pant, contrast with the easy fluidity of silk crepe de chines and embroidered chiffons. The spring palette features olive green, copper, black and navy. www.rubynz.com/liam

SPRING Dreaming of spring? Slow down on the garden path and get lost in a paradise of heady English blooms - for this is where you'll find the RUBY girl this season.

D

rawing the natural world ever closer, Ruby's SS15 collection Nectarine is in a garden state of mind. Designer Deanna Didovich has borrowed from the botanical with a polite dose of British sensibility. A visit to London's Columbia Road flower market informed her vision, as did the work of famous floral illustrators Elizabeth Twining and Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Botanical patterns are plentiful, with geometric daisy and neon floral prints, while the colour palette is bold. Poppy red, hunter green and midnight navy hues are balanced by white marle, ivory and blush pink. Form clearly favours the feminine. Ruffle, twist and wrap details, along with gossamer lace raw hems, update the playful Ruby silhouette. Meanwhile, textures display a whiff of British eccentricity by way of metallic animal jacquard, striped ribbed cotton and faux-shearling.

For Michelle providing such opportunities and training for the team is crucial to continually extending their expertise. Their skills were recently recognised at the annual Canterbury Westland Hairdressing Association competition with the salon taking home a handful of awards, including a 1st and two 2nd’s, over a range of categories. “It's nice to be recognised for our work,” says Michelle. W

hile hairdressing itself is nothing new for Emily, the mobile salon is. Returning home from working in Australia and with a long history of hairdressing in Christchurch, the timing was perfect for Emily to join forces with her brother KJ and his wife Angela to start the new business. Mobile hair salons are a big thing in the United States and across Asia, with the US styled salons often in large motor homes. Emily, KJ and Angela were looking for something a little simpler a vehicle that was easy to park in a city driveway and that would provide a great space for a salon.

IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH & well-being “Health and fitness is for everyone” declares Keith Symes personal trainer, professional chef and passionate health advocate.

“Believe in your potential for only you can motivate yourself to reach it!"

N

o matter what your situation is, you can always start on a path to improve your health and well-being. "The plus side of exercise is that you look and feel better, your energy levels are heightened, and you prolong your life." Everybody, no matter what shape or size, can start and Keith recognises that for many that does not include going to a gym. So, to meet the need, he has developed several online PT packages that allow people to get started on a personalised training and food programme from home, when it suits them but with total support and encouragement. "This is fitness on your terms." Keith will learn all about you and your goals and provide a personalised programme. He checks in weekly and alters it as required,

pushing you towards a better you. Food programmes form a large part of this and as a professional chef Keith runs workshops on healthy cooking. And again, these are done in your home. He comes to you and better still it can be to cater food for any function - he will be your own private chef with all food being healthy and super tasty. "Often a small group will get together and I cook an interactive dinner party where people can learn new skills, get ideas and new recipes for really healthy and tasty food while enjoying a social event at the same time." Armed with a multitude or recipes and tips, Keith has so much to share with his clients - whether they bring him in once for a cooking workshop or subscribe to his online PT services. "It's all about getting started - this is my motto, and I want it to be your motto:

Be nice to your nails

Working in partnership with families to support the children in their care to reach their full potential, is the foundation of the learning philosophy at Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool. Every day's programme and each child's assessment are designed with this outcome in mind. When you walk through the centre you can see this in practice. Each child's name is displayed on the walls along with the goals they want to achieve. Each child's work is also displayed on the walls as the visible sign of their progress towards their individual goals.

Inspiring children to full potential I

t's thanks to the staff's professionalism and passion about high-quality early childhood education that this new Kaiapoi nursery and preschool has grown considerably over the past few months, more quickly than even the management expected. The teachers are inspired by the new ideas and new approaches that are now an integral part of early childhood education. It's also great that they work in a specific-to-purpose, light, bright and airy facility full of wonderful resources and equipment. The Sovereign Star Preschool caters for a maximum of 75 children from three months to five years old, either full-time or part-time and for affordable fees, which include morning and afternoon tea and lunch. The meals are cooked on site and the lunch menu is on a two-week cycle with something different every day. The babies' nursery is specially designed

to recreate a calm home-like culture and the staff are dedicated to nurturing the infants in their care. The centre maintains a high ratio of teachers to children to ensure an environment where the children have the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of learning. Central to this learning is music, art, dance, drama and story-telling through which children acquire verbal, perceptual, numeric, spatial and motor skills. Sovereign Star offers 20 hours of Early Childhood Education for all three and four year olds enrolled in the centre. They are open Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm. Change afoot North of the Waimak' North of the Waimakariri River has many locals wondering, with all the new buildings going up, who is coming to town…

OXFORD

KAIAPOI

In Oxford the new supermarket is taking shape behind the current Super Value with the revamped opening expected in the next months. The town has welcomed the new Black Beech Wine Bar which opened recently. This has been great news after the recent announcement that Seagars Café and B&B was for sale and closing its doors in the meantime. Seagars put Oxford on the map as a destination and many are thankful for the support they have shown Oxford over the last ten years.

The massive land work on Smith St as you hit the Northern Motorway is taking shape with Placemakers the anchor tenant of the Waimak' Business Park. In the main street of Kaiapoi, William Street, there are four building sites currently underway with much anticipated retail, eateries and commercial businesses vying for the space. Silverstream are also progressing well with their shopping complex with a café, retail and a potential chemist among other options considering the Silverstream location. There are currently four major constructions taking place on the High St with Lamberts building's brickwork showing how tting it is for the main street. Once the two buildings either side of Conway Lane are complete nearer to Christmas, the Council will remove the temporary shops. The Farmers' site is also starting to see construction begin now with an opening planned for this time next year. Winnie Bagoes and Joe's Garage are also really starting to take shape with both racing to open in time for spring. ianne is renowned for her 3D appliqué/machine embroidery wall hangings of New Zealand native birds. Recently she has designed a beautiful Kereru piece and the class will learn the art of free motion thread painting to achieve the 3D feathered texture. The cost of the class will be $100. Book in quickly as places are sure to be snapped up. You can contact Quilters' Quarters directly on (03) 313 6765 or email quiltersquarters@clear.net.nz for more details. Not only is Dianne going to be teaching a two-day class, but on 23 September she will run a free demonstration day on how to use different feet on Husqvarna sewing machines. It went by many names: King Seenie, Blackthorn, King's Den, Bar the Door - but call it whatyou-will the rules were the same. Ahead of you was a wall of kids, ready to bring you down. Beyond them was your goal line, and safety. They would call your name. Their job was to put you on the ground. Your job was to get past them. Remember?

ullrush! A Celebration of the Great New Zealand Game is David Slack's tribute to the game. It's a fun, fact-filled history, from the origins and its various bannings, to its modern revival in the post-PC playground. It also features the memories of a wide range of people. The game is as old as the hills. It came with the settlers, and established itself firmly in school playgrounds when schooling became compulsory. There

may have been variations on the theme, but it was universally enjoyed – and feared – by boys and girls of all ages, no matter their size. It was a rite of passage for generations of Kiwi kids. 'You ask people what they remember of it,' says David Slack, 'and they start by saying 'Nothing', and then gradually they recall a little more, and a little more, and it

all comes back to them and they love it.' 'It's the perfect sport' says Scotty Stevenson. 'There's a lovely balance between winning, losing, starting again, the challenge all in front of you again, and just when you think you've got an advantage, it turns on you. And there you go. No equipment required, just your wits and a bit of bravery.'

Our emphasis is on great service, great food, and I like to embrace the Japanese culture of omotenashi," says the charming Chie, who runs front of house. “It means devotion to great hospitality.” Taka is assisted in the kitchen by Italian chef, Giuseppe. “He makes amazing gnocchi and ravioli, as well as all the fresh pastas. In fact his gnocchi is so melt in the mouth good, some regulars are requesting that he runs a gnocchi cooking class,” Chie says. To cater for the range of local customers, this bright little restaurant has an extensive menu. “Recently we have added more traditional Italian dishes. Cut those carbs.. Counting carbs? Then this recipe book is a must.

ll the recipes in the book have carb counts of 15g or less per serve and are perfectly suited to the increasing number of people who are looking for low carb recipe ideas. A national 2014 study by the Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council states that there has been a 30 per cent fall in carbohydrate consumption over the past three years, which demonstrates the demand for a book such as this to be published. Every recipe has the following information: energy - kilojoules and calories, protein, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, sugars, dietary fibre, vitamin C, total vitamin A, sodium, potassium, calcium and iron. This easy-to-read extended nutritional panel is a major feature of the carbs by numbers series of recipe option books. All the recipes are colour coded according to the level of carbohydrates per serve: 0-5g carbs is colour coded green, 610g carbs is colour coded blue and 11-15g carbs is colour coded magenta. The book makes carb-conscious meal planning easy. For example, four seed crackers (1g) with guacamole (1g) followed by pork and sage rounds with cauliflower mash (4g) and finishing with tiramisu (7g), adds up to a meal of just 13g of carbohydrates.

The 112-page book with a full colour photograph for every recipe includes options that many low-carb followers may not expect to find such as crunchy granola, Japanese pancakes, tiramisu, pizza and chocolate cake. CHRISTMAS Father’s Day Out IS COMING With Jeremy Ray, Head Chef, The Villas

– it really is! Mid winter feasting has no sooner finished than its time to start planning for Christmas festivities.

When I was at school I was intrigued that there were only four boys in the cooking class, yet the professional kitchen is dominated by males. Men in the kitchen were never strange to me as my father, who was the eldest of nine children, had to learn to cook and I was often found in the kitchen watching him at the chore he had turned into his passion. With Father's Day approaching, give all those Dads who cook a break. For those who don't, I am sure they will still appreciate a great meal out. So book a table for breakfast, brunch or dinner at The Villas this coming Father's Day, Sunday 6 September. Keep an eye on The Villas Facebook page for any special deals. PS: Thanks Dad!

T

he Villas, that elegant Victorian venue for dining and coffee on Montreal Street, has just launched its special menu for Christmas 2015. Famed for its fabulous food, extensive beverage list and all day dining, this city favourite, housed in adjoining Yellow and Blue Villas, is perfect for functions for groups from “four to 44 or more.” Their Christmas menu is available from 17 November for lunch or dinner bookings for 12 or more per group. The three course menu is, as is to be expected from The Villas' team, sophisticated and original. Starters are light and palate cleansing with a choice of natural oysters in the half shell with riesling jelly, prosciutto and rocket salad with morello cherry relish, or asparagus and pea shoot salad, with homemade feta and lemon caper dressing. Spectacular steaks are a speciality of The Villas' kitchen and mains on the Christmas menu include a succulent grass-fed eye fillet, as well as baked salmon, duck, or ham cutlet, each served with modern and imaginative sides. To finish, it's a return to the traditional, with steamed Christmas pud, pavlova or sherry trifle. The three course menu is just $70 pp. With Christmas approaching faster than we dare to think, if you're planning a function it's advisable to book early. Ring The Villas 365 6066 to secure your table. Metropol August 13, 2015 53

At Café SisMo the menu, the passion, the flavours and the décor whisper quietly of the love the French have for food, coffee and café culture.

Y

et across this vibrant and diverse café you will find a team that has experience or comes from Europe, Paris, China, South Africa, Taiwan and Japan… and of course all of them now are passionate Kiwis - serving good food to other Kiwi food lovers. Open seven days, Café SisMo is only a few minutes' walk down Riccarton Road from Hagley Park. Since it's been open it has forged a strong reputation for quality food - all with a French twist - in particular fans rave about their Eggs Benedict! The secret, says owner Colin, is that every morning, every sauce used on every dish, is made fresh from quality ingredients. Add to this the impressive range of cabinet food which features decadent and freshly baked croissants, Danish, friands, muffins, slices and scones. The breakfast menu would not look

There is also a good selection of savoury light meals and again that cabinet calls with a diverse selection of freshly baked goodies to eat in or takeaway. Add in an impressive drinks menu from Italian coffee to over 12 types of teas. The café itself is small and intimate - a place where families and friends can enjoy some quiet time with quality fare. They don't believe in table numbers at Café SisMo - everybody has a name and the team is committed to knowing yours… and this is all because every customer is seen as a part of the SisMo family. CANTERBURY REGION'S FINEST HOMES announced...

Metzger Builders won the Canterbury Registered Builders' 2015 House of the Year Supreme Award for this house in Clearwater.

A new build and a renovation in Christchurch have been revealed as this year's top Canterbury homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Canterbury Registered Master Builders' 2015 House of the Year.

M

etzger Builders (MBL) took out four regional awards with a home at Clearwater - a Gold Award and category win in the Carters $1 million - $2 million category, as well as the Canterbury Registered Master Builders' Supreme Award for the 2015 House of the Year. The company also won the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award for the same property. In addition Metzger Builders (MBL) took home the Craftsmanship Award, Outdoor Living Award and a Gold Award as well as overall category win for the Builder's Own Home Award for another property.

The judges called Metzger Builders' Supreme Award winner a stand out home with outstanding features. “This was an impressive build with a complex, challenging design. The variation of material use, stone work and interior panel work required a lot of skill,” they said. “Clever innovations including access to some rooms concealed behind wall panels instead of traditional door openings made this home a stand out. This build was a case study in builder, architect and client working together to achieve the best result.”

aul Reed Homes was awarded the Supreme Award for Canterbury Registered Master Builders' 2015 Renovation of the Year, as well as a Gold Award and overall category win for the SafetyMate Renovation Award over $500,000. The judges praised Paul Reed Homes for their Christchurch renovation, saying the team maintained the character of the original home to an impressive standard. “Built on the hills overlooking Christchurch, this was an outstanding renovation which came with its fair share of complexities and challenges,” they said. “Incredible skill and planning was required to hold the house up while the ground floor was dug out underneath and replaced with a whole new foundation and brick cladding. Looking at this home, you wouldn't know it went through a major renovation. It looks substantial, solid, wellcrafted and complete – a credit to the builder and a striking renovation.”

ANTIQUE HUNTING Ferry Antique Centre's large new premises at 282 Ferry Road is representative of the store's growing range and increasing popularity.

E

stablished in 2009, Ferry Antique Centre started as somewhat of a “fluke” when Sue Wootton came across the previous premises at 598 Ferry Road. “I pointed out to the building owner who was there at the time that it would make a great antique store,” Sue says. “A couple of weeks later I went back and told him I was serious, that I was prepared to do it and knew some like-minded dealers.” Yet over the following six years the collection – sourced by five registered antique dealers – outgrew the space and in May this year moved into the turquoise building at the Moorhouse Avenue end of Ferry Road which Sue describes as “bigger, brighter, warmer and with plenty of off-street parking”. Few can deny how well stocked this

vintage store truly is. The group supplies a wide range of antiques and collectables, from Victorian to retro, including men's and women's clothing and accessories and a large range of beaded dresses. The shelves of this spacious store are well stocked with china, crystal, glass, old bottles, tools, Kiwiana, linen, cutlery, jewellery and much more! The dealers – each with their own specialities – are happy to source specific pieces, like the correct fittings for a lightshade for one recent customer, and hunting out a Kenwood mixing bowl from the '60s for another. Call in and see the range for yourself and meet Vickie, Sue, Steve, Geoff and Lindsey at the turquoise building at 282 Ferry Road, with ample parking to the side of the store.

In demand: A high end finish By Rachel Smith

“We can take a build, renovation or repair from stud to finish, both inside and out.” Plaster and paint, wallpaper, tiling, flooring, exterior paint work and landscaping – welcome to the world of build finish specialists Wisker Contracting.

W

isker Contracting take the bones of a building and create a high end finished look, evolving from a decorating company to also include complete build finish and project management. “We can take a build, renovation or repair from stud to finish, both inside and out,” says owners Glenn Wisker and Peter Supyk, who each have decades of experience behind them. Glenn founded the business 25 years ago, gaining a reputation across the city based on the quality of their work, including luxury homes as well as general residential properties. It was this reputation that led to Peter and Glenn working together, after Peter approached Wisker Contracting to decorate his own home. “We went for a coffee and we just hit it

off,” says Peter, who had previously owned a large plastering company in the United Kingdom. Peter's plastering skills fit well with Glenn's own decorating expertise, with the business expanding after the earthquake to include project management of complete home renovations. They also have a similar view on the desired outcome of any work they undertake, with customer satisfaction and a job well done top of the list. This means not only a great finish but also excellent communication with their clients and respect for the home they are working in. Sustainability is imperative to the business, who acknowledge that painting has long been a dirty business when it comes to the environment. “While we're just one small company,

we're committed to taking full responsibility for our environmental impact,” says Glenn. “It's a journey, and we have a way to go, but we've started on a process of continual improvement.” Glenn developed a customised washing facility for rollers and brushes, called Wiskaway, which uses recycled water in order to reduce water contamination and water wastage. The system works by containing the washing water, with a chemical process used to deflock the paint. The result is solidified paint and clear water, with the system also available as a service for other painters. “Give us a call – we'd love to help you with your home,” says Peter and Glenn. ENERGY EFFICIENCY The perception that an energy efficient home is too expensive to build is a myth, says Christchurch-based architectural designer Bob Burnett. And it's a myth he and others in the industry aim to debunk with the SUPERHOME movement.

The SuperHome movement aims to inspire the building of 1000 homes that achieve a HomeStar rating between 6 and 10 stars.

T

here are currently two demonstration homes being developed by Burnett in Christchurch's Church Square that he has designed to 10 Star HomeStar standards. The homes are due for completion at the end of this month, and one was recently formally awarded 10 Star HomesStar Design certification by the NZ Green Building Council. Burnett says the homes distinguish the SUPERHOME movement from general talk about green building, as people can see the process of building affordable green homes and the results. Burnett says most of the materials and technology, including laminated veneer lumber framing, solar photovoltaics, reclaimed heat ventilation systems, infloor hydronic heating, and substantial insulation, are fairly standard – they've just been put together better. He installed the insulation himself, because he doesn't have trust in the quality of workmanship delivered by NZ insulation installers. Even one gap in the insulation will compromise thermal and energy performance, he says, and a

recent report by the Building Research Agency of New Zealand showed that 75 per cent of the country's homes had faulty installations. The SUPERHOME movement has so far gained support from the central government, Christchurch City Council and a number of builders, developers, designers, architects, investors and materials' manufacturers. meeting hosted by the council drew over 120 people and has resulted in positive changes to projects that were already under construction. The movement aims to inspire the building of 1000 homes that achieve HomeStar ratings between six and 10 stars. The concept is not only about the energy ratings either. Burnett says

affordability, earthquake resilience, thermal comfort and a healthy indoor environment are also key elements to what makes a SuperHome. Ultimately the aim of the industry-led initiative is to “promote and normalise” the idea of energy-efficient sustainable homes through open source sharing of design and construction information. “We want to get people to understand

it doesn't have to be complicated,” Burnett says. These [demonstration projects] are modest, affordable homes.” He would like to see a similar concept applied to homes as is legislated for cars in NZ, where a vehicle displays both a price for the car and the fuel cost to run it. This, he says, would make it clear to people that running costs are a major factor in home affordability. To assist with this, the movement currently has three tools under development that the central government's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is keen to promote. 1. A dashboard-type digital tool with an infographic of a home showing what initiatives can be implemented, the costs they might add in terms of building and the corresponding benefit in terms of energy bill reductions. 2. A mortgage calculator that shows users the degree to which mortgage terms and interest costs can be reduced if energy bill savings are put towards additional mortgage payments. 3. The degree to which a home's value as an asset is increased by various sustainability initiatives. Burnett says that this concept is well understood in the US and Europe, where research has shown an energy-efficient home is worth between 10 and 20 per cent more on resale than a business as usual home. The return on investment on a badly built home, he says, is compromised by issues including mould and condensation as well as poor performance energy-wise. Burnett says that discussions around rebuilding the city more sustainably have been largely a “talkfest” where “very little real stuff happens on the ground. The Church Square

projects are the movement's way of “making it real”. “We are leading by example, from the grassroots, doing ground-up stuff,” Burnett says. Article resource: Willow Aliento

NKBA 2015 Kitchen Design of the Year by Robin Caudwell. NKBA Bathroom Design of the Year winner was by Davinia Sutton and Sam Lawrence of Detail by Davinia Sutton, Christchurch. The judges commented: “The attention to detail in this bathroom is impressive – right down to the way the handle has been formed as part of the glass shower door. It's a simple palette with subtle but contrasting colour. And simple ideas have been developed and followed through. The lighting is particularly well planned.” Robin Caudwell of Designer Cabinets, Waikato took out the NKBA Kitchen Design of the Year. The judges commented: “This is a kitchen that integrates perfectly into its surroundings. It creates a strong presence without dominating. It feels light and elevated despite the heavy structures around it. Texture and lighting have also been used to create a variety of mood options.” For more information go to www.nkba.org.nz.

Silver now; Gold in the future The 2015 House of the Year Awards was the first time seven year-old local construction firm Trent Building Solutions had entered the prestigious national awards. This makes the company’s Silver in the Nulook New Homes $650,000 - $1 million category for Canterbury all the more impressive.

Sophisticated, yet understated, the off-white plaster finish of 39 Winchester Street’s modern exterior is juxtaposed against the natural beauty and depth of cedar. The contemporary colour scheme aligns the exterior with the interior, where a crisp white palette is set against the golden glow of the extensive oak flooring. A structural steel staircase of oak and glass climbs elegantly to the upper floor, where three north-oriented bedrooms enjoy plenty of sunlight.

Testament to the ease of building with Trents, the home’s co-owner Daniel, is ready to build again less than 12 months after the completion of his new home, which explains how the local firm has been able to operate solely through word of mouth. “The company started in 2008 when we got two houses for family members to build,” company owner Richard Trent explains. “From a property we built for my in-laws we picked up the Merivale build and from this project we’ve picked up two more new builds.” Yet the award-winning home is just a glimpse at the level this Registered Master Builder and Licenced Building Practitioner is capable of. FINDING A GOOD BUILDER Hiring the right builder is crucial to the whole building experience. People who have been involved in building, repairing or renovating a house typically report that the key factor in making it a happy experience is finding a good builder and subcontractors.

W

hat most commonly soured the experience for people whom ConsumerBuild talked

to, were: Ÿ Poor workmanship Ÿ Contractors not turning up when promised Ÿ No communication about variations and other issues that arose Ÿ Complaints being ignored and problems not being fixed Ÿ Phone calls not being returned - in some cases even by the management of the building company Ÿ Delays which became a nightmare In contrast, people who'd had positive experiences reported that the builders they hired all had the following qualities: Ÿ Skill Ÿ Knowledge of the housing industry Ÿ Honesty and integrity - i.e. someone who tells the truth, keeps promises

and accepts responsibility Ÿ Patience Ÿ Sympathy with the client's goals and budget ConsumerBuild provides tips on selecting a builder When the tenders come in, don't automatically choose the cheapest. Use a number of criteria to decide, such as: Ÿ Price - if a tender is way above or below the others you should question it. Some builders tender low on the initial bid just to get the job - but they'll probably be forced to cut corners, or rely on expensive variations along the way to make the job pay. Ÿ Examples of their work - ask them if you can talk to someone who has used them to build or renovate, and look at examples of their work. Ÿ Licensing – check the Register of

...always something stylish at

licensed and qualified practitioners to see if they are licensed. A licensed practitioner has shown they have the skills, knowledge and experience to meet government-backed national standards. Ÿ Membership of trade organisations – find out if they are members of New Zealand Certified Builders Association (CBANZ) or Registered Master Builders Federation (RMBF). Ÿ Guarantees – whether any are offered and what is covered. Finally, talk to each one and decide if you think you can work with them on a daily basis. You need to be comfortable with them, believe communication channels will be open and confident they are capable of turning designs into a high quality/satisfactory house. AUGUST tips and tasks By Michael Coulter

August in the garden is a month when we can start to think about spring and the tasks to come. Although the days are noticeably getting longer there is still plenty of cold and frosty weather to come.

M

any winter tasks can be completed, like pruning and winter spraying. Moving deciduous fruit trees and other trees and shrubs should be done by the end of the month. As ground conditions improve soil can be dug over and compost dug in to prepare for planting and sowing in the vegetable garden. Lime and superphosphate may be applied to allow time for the soil to absorb it before planting and sowing in a few weeks' time.

Spring bulbs will beneďŹ t from a dressing of a potash fertiliser to improve owering and to strengthen stems. Watch for bud movement on the stone fruit in order to correctly time the copper spray to control leaf curl and brown rot. Complete pruning of soft fruits. Hardwood cuttings of currants and gooseberries from prunings may still be taken. Strawberry plants may be planted in the ground or in pots (pot grown will often fruit earlier). Tomato growing areas should be prepared now by digging in

compost and fertilisers and in some cases changing soil if disease has been a problem (especially in greenhouses). Seed sowing can be started in controlled areas like greenhouses, cloches and heated pads. Once lawns have started to grow and have been cut at least twice, they can be fed to encourage growth and suppress weeds. Article courtesy of Canterbury Horticultural Society. AUTO PLUS AUTO NEWS ROAD TESTS NEW MODELS AUTO EVENTS

DESIGNED FOR A SELECT GROUP While we initially questioned the need for a Subaru Legacy sedan with the jacked-up ride height of the Outback, we did fall for the Legacy 3.6X when we road tested it just over a year ago.

By Damien O'Carroll

I

t was a car that didn't seem to serve a logical purpose, but worked remarkably well anyway. It was a car aimed at a tiny, tiny niche (people who want ground clearance, but don't want a wagon) that actually seemed to make sense when you drove it.

For more information go to www.oversteer.co.nz

It also helped that it was basically a Legacy, which also meant it was just a good car to begin with. Now Subaru have extended the concept by making the Legacy X available with the smaller 2.5-litre fourcylinder boxer, opposed to the 3.6-litre six in the earlier car. The 2.5-litre engine pumps out 127kW of power and 235Nm of torque, compared with the 191kW/350Nm of the 3.6-litre six and is hooked up to Subaru's Lineartronic CVT transmission.

The net result of this is a car that is pretty much exactly the same as the sixcylinder car, but slower and it doesn't sound as good. But it also consumes considerably less fuel as a consequence – 7.9L/100km as opposed to the six's 10.3. The 2.5X is still a pleasantly Subaru-ish sedan, albeit without the 3.6's mid-range urge, but when the six-cylinder car only costs $3,000 more, we would probably choose the bigger-engined car's relaxed demeanour, superior performance and proper (albeit ageing) transmission.

Price: $54,990 Engine: 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder petrol Power/torque: 127kW/235Nm Transmission: Continuously variable Fuel consumption: 7.9L/100km CO2 emissions: 132g/km

Still, if you really need a sedan with an increased ride height and can't stomach the fuel consumption of a six, then you won't go far wrong with the 2.5X. You will also be a member of a very select group of people with needs THAT speciďŹ c.

SMOOTH, QUIET POWER AND LUXURY

Price: $94,995 Engine: 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder petrol/electric hybrid Power/torque: 151kW/n/a Transmission: Continuously variable 0-100km/h: 8.5 seconds Fuel consumption: 5.5L/100km CO2 emissions: 130g/km

Where the Lexus ES350 is the powerhouse of the newly re-introduced ES range, the ES300h is its smoother, quieter and far more economical hybrid brother. And, we have to say, probably more in keeping with the wonderfully serene – and traditionally Lexus – atmosphere created by the company's newest mid-size luxo-machine.

T

he new ES range is far more in the vein of the luxury LS than its more sporting-focussed siblings either side of it in the Lexus range; the IS and GS. And that makes it probably the most traditionally “Lexus-like” of all the current Lexii this side of the big LS. Our test ES300h was far more reserved than the bright red paint/white leather of our ES350 test car and was, in our opinion, far better for it. Some cars just suit subtlety better and the ES is one of those cars. As both our ES test cars were Limited specification, the only real difference was the powertrain. Where the ES350 scores

Toyota's ever-impressive 204kW 3.5-litre V8 hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission, the ES300h gets a hybrid electric powertrain made up of a 2.5-litre Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor with a combined output of 151kW, hooked up to a continuously variable transmission. This not only helps the ES drastically in a fuel consumption sense (5.5L/100km versus the 350's 9.5) it also makes the ES300h even smoother and quieter. Damn near silent in many situations. While it is down on power, the performance from the hybrid unit is more than acceptable, with the ES300h

scampering to the legal limit in 8.5 seconds, compared to the 350's 7.4 second time. The only time it really becomes noticeable that you have a CVT hiding in shame under the car is when you need to use the full travel of the throttle pedal and you are greeted with the usual desperate CVT-induced groan from the engine. Still, this is infrequent and shortlived, so hardly a deal-breaker. Even smoother and quieter than its more powerful sibling, the ES300h is pretty much the next best thing to a more-than-twice-the-price LS in terms of serenely comfortable motoring.

FANTASTIC PACKAGE WITH A

NEW FACE fibre-look trim. The new face is the biggest differentiator between this car and the old model which hasn't actually been available in New Zealand for a while now. What isn't changed (thankfully!) is the thoroughly fantastic package that sits under the swoop skin – the 195kW/360Nm four-cylinder turbo engine is still an absolute ripper that feels perfectly matched to the six-speed manual transmission (the only transmission the RS265 is available with), while the chassis that it all sits on is a beautifully balanced, razor-sharp thing of wonder.

There hasn't been a lot that has changed about the Renault Megane RS265 since we last drove it, but it is the sort of car that when a company asks you if you want to drive it again, you simply don't say no.

S

ince our last experience Renault has restyled the nose of the car, incorporating the latest Renault family face and added a few bits and pieces of interior trim, as well as carbon

The RS265 is surprisingly comfortable, even at around-town speeds, but the lowslung ride height and awkward, highsided and heavily bolstered sports seats make it a literal pain in the derrière to climb in and out of and the lack of sensible daily practical touches – like cup holders - make it something that is far more enjoyable as a weekend fun car. Or, even better, a track day car. And that is where the true beauty and genius of the RS265 lies – it is a car you could easily drive out to a race track, spend the day thrashing it on the track and simply drive home again afterwards.

Downright The Jeep Wrangler is no stranger to us. In fact we would go as far as to say it is one of our all-time favourites, despite (or, indeed, perhaps even because of) its glaring – and, quite frankly, blatant – shortcomings as a road-going vehicle.

O

ff-road, however, it is utterly unbeatable, and this, along with its sheer charm and belligerent presence, make it downright loveable. The Overland is basically an up-spec, “luxury” model of the Wrangler Unlimited, adding 18-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, bodycoloured guards, side steps, a body-coloured hard top, fog lamps, satellite navigation and a pumped up stereo to the big Wrangler’s rugged off-roadiness. Now, we completely understand the appeal of having a few luxury features in our car - ventilated seats are one of our favourite things ever. Except that the Wrangler is not really the sort of car that you would buy for that. Not that the Overland has ventilated seats, but you get the point.

80 August 13, 2015 Metropol

Blingy new stuff aside, the Wrangler is still the big, loveable brute that we fell in love with on the legendary Rubicon Trail. The further off the sealed roads you go, the better it gets. That’s not to say it is bad on the road. Well… actually, yeah, it pretty much is. The thing about the Wrangler on the road, however, is that its very shortcomings – the unpolished, jiggly ride, the massive truck-like turning circle, the sheer lumbering bulk of the thing – serve to remind you just how damn good it is off the road. That means that every time you bounce up over a curb because of the massive turning circle or smack your head on the side window because the ride simply gets overwhelmed by the road, you can’t help but grin and enjoy the sheer rugged purposefulness of it all.

AUTO PLUS

lovable

Mechanically, the Overland gets the same 209kW/347Nm 3.6litre petrol V6 as the Sport or Rubicon models (no diesel available here) and it is hooked up to a five-speed auto transmission, meaning that for such a big vehicle, it gets along remarkably well indeed. The thing about the Overland though is that it costs $64,990 in four-door Unlimited form, where for $62,990 you can get the seriously purposeful Rubicon model that adds all the good offroad bits like locking diffs, an electronic front sway bar disconnect system and a heavy duty Dana 44 front axle, among

other things. This would be the Wrangler we would buy. It takes the Wrangler from being incredible off-road to utterly staggering in what it can do and the ease with which it does it. The single most worrying thing about the Overland model is that if someone wants luxury in their Wrangler that suggests that it would go no further off-road than a drive-through window. And that would be a massive insult to the Wrangler – not to mention an utter waste – because the Wrangler is still one of the absolute best when the seal finishes.
