EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE
F
ashion envelopes us this week as NZ Fashion Week draws our attention to the hottest new trends on the catwalks. This year, included in the outstanding line-up of national and international designers are six Christchurch designers whose creativity and drive is inspiring. And, while it's the collections that steal our hearts, it is the extraordinary models who bring the garments to life. Local agency Portfolio has nine models walking in this year's event – you'll find photos and the full story on the following page. Canterbury has its own Fashion Beauty Week thanks to local fashionista Denyse Saunders. High fashion, entertainment, awards and cocktail parties make for a stylish week in our city, and the jewel of the week – The Canterbury Collections & Awards at The Tannery – is an event not to be missed (pages 26,27). To find out what's arriving in the fashion stores in our city, our writers have been hitting the streets and talking with the owners of local stores. In this issue we get a glimpse into refreshing new fashion from garment collections to lingerie and beautiful new jewellery that brings the reviving colours of spring's jewel tones to the fore. Like new clothing designs, home fashion is also constantly evolving. Industry experts are always studying design innovations, colours, textures and emerging global designers in order to predict which trends will gather momentum to become the latest big trends. On pages 66 and 67 you'll discover the forecast for spring colour – a surprising palette of slightly more masculine tones in earthy new shades. And for those of us who are more inclined to unique, statement bling than nature's forests and ferns we have a round-up on the latest in new elegance home style. With brass, gold, velvet, art deco and opulence the latest luxe trend for homes is nothing short of lavish.

or someone who had never really aspired to
become a school principal
Brent Ingram has proven to be a visionary in the successful evolution of Hagley College. From his battle for earthquake restrengthening for the school back in the early 1990s, to transforming the school to cater for pupils who had missed out on opportunities and helping those students succeed in specialised subjects such as fashion, cuisine, music and theatre, Brent Ingram has enhanced thousands of lives. He has bravely taken a school that was struggling and grown the roll from some 900 to over 2,300 under his 25 years' inspirational leadership.

What initially led you into the world of teaching and education? I wanted to make a difference to people. I originally wanted to be a doctor, but once I was studying science at university I had something of a transformative moment while swotting for an organic chemistry exam. To help me understand a virtually incomprehensible text book I translated it down to a single page. Then I could understand what it was all about. It made me realise that I could have been taught in a different way, in a way that made material accessible.
What was the most challenging thing about teaching science and in particular running science experiments? The key thing is managing the process of letting kids loose with equipment. Many teachers are doing fewer experiments because of these management issues. I found different ways of organising things so students had the opportunity to experiment in a way they hadn't before. It was a case of building different programmes for students so they could have individualised learning and become hooked on science.
You specialised in the sciences, and were appointed head of science at St Thomas and Villa Maria Colleges – what did you love about teaching science?
Teaching is a very challenging vocation – what qualities do you need in order to succeed?
I loved the inquiry and problem solving. I also liked the beauty and intrigue of science and the discovery of the unknown in something as tiny as a drop of water. Conveying that to students was very satisfying.
You need to like students - to have a belief that they can succeed. You also need optimism and a belief that anything is possible. As well you need a passion for your subject area and for learning.
OUT & ABOUT
When you were invited to be principal at Hagley Community College what was your reaction?
You have been at Hagley for 25 years – what are the most radical changes you have seen over this time?
I was pretty excited - excited about the potential the college offered and the challenges it was facing. At the time I was one of the youngest secondary school principals to be appointed.
I have seen both attitudinal and performance changes. There was a perception that Hagley was a school for kids with no other place to go. Now it's seen as a regional hub for students and a place to inspire them to transform their lives. From a school struggling with performance it has transformed to a school that has sustained a top ERO report for the past 4 – 5 years. It has also changed from being seen by the Ministry of Education as a difficult child to being regarded as at the cutting edge of education.
One of the first things you did at Hagley was to change the school's name – why? When I arrived Hagley was not like a traditional high school. It was involved in a variety of other different types of schooling, as well as with adult and community education. It seemed more appropriate to describe the school as a community college. You were instrumental in introducing the “pathways” programme where pupils can specialise in subjects such as fashion, cuisine, music and theatre – why? Learning happens best when students have a passion for the subject and it is grounded in their world. For students with learning difficulties it was a way to really engage them. We set up the different pathways not just for interest, but also associated them with advanced qualifications.
What are the most important attributes a principal needs? You need to be a visionary and to be innovative. You also need to be practical and able to take an idea and implement it.
What are the most challenging aspects of being a principal? The concept of injustice is very difficult for a principal to deal with. That injustice may take the form of a kid being treated badly, or the Ministry not being supportive, or a parent not understanding what we are trying to do. Being a principal is demanding; how do you switch off and what hobbies, pastimes do you enjoy? I don't ever really switch off but I don't think of that as a negative. I'm always thinking about solutions, about achieving the win/win. What will you miss most upon retiring as principal of Hagley? The people – the staff and the students. The stimulus of finding creative solutions and the feeling of intense pride and satisfaction at seeing students succeed. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Anything is possible if you have a belief that you can succeed. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? That I am actually shy and don't like public speaking. Yet I have to do an awful lot of it.
“Learning happens best when students have a passion for the subject and it is grounded in their world.”
What's next on your wish list? To continue to contribute to education, but also to spend time with my family and to be a grandfather.

Music a uniting language Christchurch-based country-music songstress Katie Thompson has just been in Vienna collaborating with five other artists in the creation of a music single, video clip and documentary within a hectic five-day schedule.
K
atie was selected to be part of the project after placing sixth out of 8000 artists from 140 countries in the world's largest online music contest conducted by the worldwide music platform, Global Rockstar. The resulting single will be released internationally on 1 September, along with the video and documentary, to coincide with the launch of Global Rockstar's 2015 online music contest. The project brought together six artists from six continents – with Katie representing Oceania – in order to demonstrate the ability of music to transcend physical borders and differences. “Music is our uniting language, although the song will be in English,” said the rather excited, 28-year-old Katie in an interview a few days before departing for Austria.
10 August 27, 2015 Metropol
“It's an honour to represent my continent on such a global scale and for such a positive project. I can't wait to see what we come up with and to share it with everyone back home. “The others will be coming from places like South Africa, Japan and South America. We were selected for our musical attributes. There's a lead singer, a female drummer and I'll be involved in writing the song. There'll be an up-tempo, rock feel to it, like my own Kiwi-country songs.”

Her music showcases a fondness for the organic warmth of country music, as well as the direct approach of pop.
A driven, charismatic and eclectic singer and songwriter, Katie has enjoyed ongoing success ever since moving to Christchurch from Hokitika three years ago. Her music showcases a fondness for the organic warmth of country music, as well as the direct approach of pop. Following the release of her 2009 debut album, Tall Poppy, with its heartfelt, honest vocals and catchy melodies, Katie quickly made her way around New Zealand, where she has performed extensively, even as the opening act for Sir Elton John during his 2011 New Zealand tour. Her sophomore studio album, Impossible, which was recorded in the UK, displays a crisp studio production and blends elements of folk, pop and country into a collection of bittersweet and beautiful songs. Her latest EP, ‘Moving On - Katie Thompson Live At Quicksand Studios’, offers an intimate and authentic portrait of Katie's music, which offers a glimpse of her outstanding live show. Katie has also started up her own service company, Quirky Music, which specialises in artist development, social media management and online crowd
funding for independent artists. This year, the Music Managers' Achievement Award was presented to Katie for the great promise demonstrated in her work with Quirky Music. Other awards have included Top Artist in 2014 on the emerging-artist platform, Artist Signal and she was a finalist for Female Artist of the Year at the 2012 New Zealand Country Music Awards. Whether you want to raise funds for a single, EP, album, music video or tour, Quirky Music can help determine the budget, what rewards you can offer and set a realistic time frame. They will look at each artist and do a pre-campaign assessment to see what you need to work on to make your campaign successful. In fact, Katie was the first country artist in the world to raise $50,000, through the Sellaband Website, where fans can invest in the music of artists, to cover the full production costs of her own second album. On her return from Austria, Katie plans to work alongside Anika Moa in a crowdfunding campaign, via PledgeMe, to raise money for Anika's next children's album. “I've been very lucky in my career that everything has come together at the right time. These are all great opportunities and I'm ready to take them on,” says Katie.

READING IS SEXY It was International Book Lover's Day on 9 August. To celebrate, EliteSingles ran a fun survey: a look at whether or not singles see reading as a 'sexy' activity, and if the right book can score you a date. From the 1700 survey respondents 90% of Kiwi singles revealed that they regularly read for pleasure. Additionally, nearly two-thirds of singles would prefer to date an avid reader, with what you read influencing your dating chances: women like men who read thrillers while men fall for women who read erotica.

Retire in comfort and style “They're not only spacious, stylish and beautifully finished, but they are also loaded with extra features and are extremely practical with a quite astonishing amount of built-in storage.” Trish Veronese, sales manager at Park Lane Retirement is speaking about the brand new two bedroom villas available at the retirement complex.
M
etropol was fortunate to be able to view these homes. They are indeed fabulous offering an entertainer's kitchen, large living areas, two luxurious tiled bathrooms with under floor heating, custom-made drapes, double glazing and great storage. Each of the eight villas has its own individual design elements and they all come equipped with a heat pump, stainless fridge/freezer, washing machine and dryer, dishwasher and rangehood, as a well as a security alarm system and marine grade floor carpet in the garage. Quality of this level is integral to life at Park Lane Retirement Village. The villas are simply the latest example of the range of modern lifestyle options at the complex. Park Lane offers 21 studios and 24 beautifully appointed onebedroom apartments all in a facility purpose-built to the highest possible standards with the comfort and well-being of the residents in mind. The studios and the apartments offer the ideal balance between semi-independent and assisted living with levels of care developed and provided to meet specific individual needs. For those residents whose care needs are greater, Park Lane also offer 42 swing beds in its care unit.
The villas are simply the latest example of the range of modern lifestyle options at the complex. Trish says that visitors are often surprised by the spacious grounds and gardens around the complex because these are not visible from the road. A large courtyard with a water feature is the focal point of the community and is very popular particularly during the summer months. Things don't stand still at Park Lane. Currently in the design phase is another
option for independent living in the form of 80 one, two and three bedroom apartments to be built on adjacent land. Stage one of this new development will begin next year. You can be sure it will be first class. Call Trish on (03) 338 4495 to arrange a visit to Park Lane Retirement Village at 35 Whiteleigh Ave, Addington.

MULTI UNIT DEVELOPMENTS – PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT IS A MUST Developers who are about to commence building multi-unit complexes which will be a Body Corporate, should talk with a professional body corporate manager even before the construction process begins. Taking the time to do this will assist them in understanding how a body corporate works and will help developers confirm that the facilities and services they are planning to provide within their development are complete and desirable.
P
rofessional managers like Skyway, who work with many different types of multi-unit developments for commercial, industrial and residential properties, have a wealth of invaluable knowledge they are happy to pass on to assist developers to achieve a well thought-out multi-unit development. “Professional managers can advise in areas such as the finalisation of Body Corporate Rules, the appointment of fire safety professionals for the long term, and the preparation of the budget and initial disclosure requirements so the setup is transparent and complete for marketing and sales purposes,” says Ann from Skyway. “Prospective owners will know the property is to be well run and well cared for.”
There is no doubt that owners of units in already established multi-unit developments should also employ a professional management company such as Skyway to ensure their Body Corporate is run correctly. Professional management offers neutral and independent support to owners, to the chairperson and the committee. Ownership of units change, chairpersons and committees change, whereas a professional company provides ongoing and consistent services to the Body Corporate at a minimal cost. “Units in a well-managed and well maintained Body Corporate consistently hold their value and are desirable to prospective purchasers,” says Ann. “And professional management certainly assists

Step out in comfort, style and colour When spring arrives we tend to gravitate outdoors and spend the majority of our time there, which means when it comes to footwear comfort is key. Ziera, the comfort-engineering specialists in fashionable footwear think so too and Ziera Merivale is full of additional surprises that you won't find at the other Christchurch stores.
Z
iera's latest collection encapsulates sartorial summertime designs. Inspired by strong botanical prints they have presented a colourful and visually compelling range that not only impresses the eye but is cushioned with comfort. They're all about “pretty on top, heavenly underfoot”. Among the latest luxe trends are standout platforms, block mid-heels and low blocks. The use of woven textured fabrics, super-soft natural leathers, and stacked wood veneer and leather covered heels is a timeless interpretation of contemporary-chic. Every one of Ziera's designs is cushioned with layers of comfort, be it Poron® cushioning technology, memory foam, rubber soles, contouring and cupping or all of the above. Even down to the daintiest of sandals, everything is engineered to provide ultimate comfort without

ROMY compromising on style. Merivale store manager Kim Sullivan says their point of difference is their variety. They have a mixture of brands which means there's something for almost every occasion; casual, corporate and playful. While the majority of the designs are by Ziera there are also select European brands, Australian brand CC Resorts and the much-loved Skechers brand. You can visit the Ziera Merivale store at 229 Papanui Road, Merivale. Parking is available right outside the front door. www.zierashoes.com

Food for a healthy body and mind A personal journey observing the benefits of eating foods for optimal health was just the beginning for Ann and Ran from Parachute Health.
W
ith symptoms of joint pain becoming an increasing issue in her life, Ann read a book recommended by a friend on a nutritional-based approach to managing chronic health issues. Its suggestions opened Ann and Ran's eyes to the possibilities of curing their own aches and pains and they decided to make changes to their own lifestyle. Many years on and the evidence in their own health speaks for itself – no more joint pain, welcomed weight loss and general good health. “We have been interested in nonmedical health care for years and have done a lot of research to help ourselves and others to become remarkably well again,” says Ran. Parachute Health is no fad diet; rather a lifestyle change based on eating grass-fed meats, natural fats, no grains and plenty of vegetables. Ann and Ran recommend their health programmes for a wide range of chronic health issues, including Type 2 diabetes, migraines, allergies, asthma, dermatitis, unwanted weight gain, arthritis, osteoporosis, ulcerative colitis, infertility and general good health.

“Our health programmes are designed to help you change your established eating habits in an efficient and easily achievable way,” says Ann, with the option of purchasing an instructional health programme which clients can follow at their own pace, or a personal consultation with a package designed specifically for each person or family's needs. “The programmes include an entire week's menu and accompanying shopping list and recipes, with the well balanced meals including a selection of ingredients to provide optimal health and minimal waste.” Nutritional information and supporting research is explained in simple terms, with both Ran and Ann able to offer a wealth of knowledge on any specific part of their programme. “It is what you put in your mouth that makes a difference,” says Ran, who encourages anyone who may be putting up with chronic health issues to give them a call for a free no obligation consultation. Spring's homage to French couture No longer is there a lack of haute couture in Christchurch, at least not at beloved Beckenham boutique Made in the Shade. Owner and buyer Ali Musson has an eye for fashion, picking pieces that epitomise feminine beauty and are effortlessly on-point.

li has just unpacked the latest collections and there is plenty to envy. This spring/summer pays homage to French couture with pleats, polka dots, stripes, mint green and rose pink pastels and hues of blue and navy dominating the scene, and the standout trend being the relaxed, slouch-look pant. She wanders through the store demonstrating how well the garments marry with other pieces to create different looks. You'd be forgiven for thinking you were backstage at fashion week; never have I seen someone throw together high-end looks with such ease. She modestly puts it down to the brands – brands that appeal to the fashion-savvy in every age group, younger women transitioning into adulthood through to more mature women who dress to impress.
The pieces exude aesthetic appeal with their subtle detailing and flattering structuring. As such, with the exception of occasion wear, pieces can be mixed and matched as both casual and corporate. Only the finest natural textiles feature; breathable cottons for the warmer climate and luscious wools to wrap up in. New Zealand made brands like Bazaar, Bittermoon, Optimum and Mardee sit alongside European brands like Sandwich and Lisette, and Ali and Sharon are on hand to put together pieces or entire wardrobes for individuals. WHAT'S IN THE F R A M E ? Following World War I, Christchurch residents were hungry to embrace American culture and soon the city was punctuated with 'picture palaces' scattered across the city.
W
e lost 21 cinema screens in the February quake, with the Metro Gold and Regent on Worcester near Cathedral Square destroyed, the Academy and Cloisters cinemas in the Arts Centre closed and the Rialto and Hoyts in Moorhouse Ave later demolished. Yet Christchurch remains home to a number of smaller boutique cinemas tucked away around the city, great for something to do on wintry days.
Hollywood, Sumner
HOLLYWOOD THEATRE SUMNER 28 Marriner Street, Sumner Sumner's Hollywood Theatre is the only suburban cinema still operating in the city after 70 years in business. It opened in 1938 as a single cinema, before a second was added in 1973 and a third in 1999. Owner Lang Masters, who has run the cinema with his wife, Maureen, for more than 50 years became the youngest film distributor in New Zealand at the age of 19 and had seven independent Christchurch cinemas at the peak of his empire in 1981. Named the country's independent cinema of the year last year in the fifth annual New Zealand Motion Picture Industry Council awards, the Hollywood Theatre screens a wide range of arthouse films through to Hollywood blockbusters. While the theatre closed for a short time post-quake, a detailed engineering evaluation report showed no concerns and it has remained open ever since.

ALICE IN VIDEOLAND The Old High Street Post Office, 209 Tuam Street Alice's Cinematheque was the first cinema to open in the city following the February 2011 earthquake. The ornate 38-seat cinema was established at the back of Tuam Street's Alice in Videoland DVD store in 2012, based on the Egyptian revival style popular in the 1920s, complete with hieroglyphics, Tutankhamun masks and a carving of the goddess Isis above the screen. Positioned in the Old High Street Post Office, Alice combs the world's film festivals bypassing questionable mainstream releases to focus on the good, the great, the rare and the unusual to bring a celebration of film to the screen. A virtual rainbow's end for discerning movie lovers, the digital cinema shows an eclectic mix of arthouse movies.
ACADEMY GOLD CINEMAS The Colombo 363 Colombo Street, Sydenham The Academy Gold story began in Christchurch in 1976 when its first incarnation opened in the old Boys High Gymnasium in the Arts Centre, managed by Rodney Cook who later built up an impressive cinema portfolio in the city. After losing the Metro Gold cinema near Cathedral Square in the February 2011 earthquake and being evicted from the Academy and Cloisters cinemas at the quake-damaged Arts Centre, Rodney was committed to bringing arthouse cinema back to the city, overseeing the development of the new Academy Gold Cinema at The Colombo in Sydenham before his death in 2013. His wife and three children have continued the dream, establishing the Academy Gold Cinema. Now based at The Colombo, Academy Gold houses three self-contained theatres: the Odeon (25 seats), the Academy (65 seats) and the Metro (48 seats), featuring richly patterned carpet, retro-style lighting and comfortable seating.

GLOBAL YOGA WARRIOR She's a global yoga warrior and servant to the breath and now Janet Stone is coming to Christchurch, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience, thanks to local yoga studio Flow Hot Yoga.
F
rom 3-6 October the San Francisco native will be sharing her unique, vigorous approach to vinyasa yoga, with Flow Hot Yoga hiring Addington Raceway to accommodate the numbers this talented yogi is attracting. Five elements – earth, water, fire, air and space – make up the natural world, our bodies, and the practice of living yoga. In this 30-hour training (24 hours of practical, 6 hours of theory/written) for teachers and non-teachers alike, you will study how to harness and balance these five basic energies both on and off the mat. For each element, Janet will explore asana, pranayama, mantra and devotional practices that can help us connect with these fundamental building blocks of all life. Janet Stone's studentship began at 17 under the meditation teachings of Prem Rawat. His reverence for simplicity and finding joy in the rise and fall of life live on in her practice and teaching today. In 1996, she travelled to India, her grandfather's birthplace, and became dedicated to the path of yoga. Janet blends the alchemy of her own practice with decades of studentship,

coming to Christchurch
The hot yoga studio was developed by owners Victoria Pomeroy, Jess Smith and Greta Wilkinson five years ago and they are supported by a wonderful team of 16 teachers all teaching a range of classes. The unique heated environment allows the body to eliminate toxins while you more comfortably move from posture to posture and the heat increases an
individual's flexibility in the poses. The Christchurch studio offers hot yoga classes for all levels of students, with the aim of helping you realise your full potential, whether you're trying yoga for the first time or you've been practicing hot yoga for years. Opening just two weeks before the 2010 earthquake, the studio was an
instant hit with locals needing to de-stress and develop a stronger sense of community, quickly growing from 22 to 53 classes a week, offering a variety of classes, teachers and temperatures to suit. Eating out in Addington By Hans Petrovic
It is no real surprise that Addington has become one of Christchurch's most vibrant and exciting neighbourhoods, with a wide variety of restaurants, pubs and cafes.
A
drive down Lincoln Road is always interesting, with new office complexes still popping up, employing hundreds of people, many of whom require a place to go for a meal or refreshment at lunchtime or after work. The regional manager of Hospitality New Zealand, Amy McLellan-Minty, points out that with the AMI Stadium, Addington Raceway, Horncastle Arena, as well as the relocated Court Theatre, all close by, many cafes and restaurants that had been forced to close in other parts of the city by the earthquakes, saw this as an ideal area in which to relocate. Business soon started booming everywhere. The Miller Bar and Café and Sullivan's Irish Bar (then the Bedrock Restaurant and Bar) continued on from before the earthquake, to be followed by the Bean Scene Café and Cargo Bar. Not far away is Richard Sinke's music venue and late-night bar, Dux Live, which also moved early into Addington and has attracted large crowds of younger people, mainly aged from 18 to 25, and sometimes 40-plus age groups, depending on the gig that's on. Sullivans
The Pedal Pusher both major names in Lincoln Road, while Speights Ale House at Tower Junction is hugely popular before sporting events. Simo opened his Moroccan Mosaic deli and restaurant in Lincoln Road in 2012, before the Court Theatre moved into the area. “The opening of the theatre was a big bonus to us. There weren't that many restaurants here then and we provided theatregoers with a place they needed. Now, there are so many more places to eat in Addington that we all have to keep up or improve our standards in order to keep our customers,” he says.

“Now, there are so many more places to eat in Addington that we all have to keep up or improve our standards in order to keep our customers.”
Amy McLellan-Minty
Morrell & Co Simo's small establishment is right in the middle of it all, with the popular Addington Coffee Co-op and Shanxi Noodle just over the road; North and South Gourmet faces Simo in an offstreet parking area; and the Miller Bar and Café, Sullivan's and the Pedal Pusher not far away. Also catering to the huge influx of office workers in the area with its excellent food is the Town Tonic restaurant, café and cocktail bar, where the floor-to-ceiling windows provide an agreeable and relaxing vantage from
Town Tonic which to sit and observe the hustle and bustle that is the new Addington. Amy likens Lincoln Road to what has been developing in Victoria Street. “Lincoln Road is pretty much the same set-up. It's vibrant and it's safe. It's all within walking distance. To go from dining to a night out, you just walk from A to B,” she says. “It's exciting. We're really getting there in Christchurch, with clusters of bars and restaurants popping up all over the place, instead of being centralised in one place. “I'm a bit of a foodie, so I appreciate
the high standard and variety of restaurants in Christchurch, although there are still a lot of people who don't realise how good it is. The calibre of chefs – Mexican, Japanese, all kinds – is extremely high.” This cosmopolitan touch is also becoming apparent in Lincoln Road, where, along with the well-established Chinese and Japanese places, you can now also find the Afghan Restaurant, and even a Filipino food market not far from Simo's Moroccan deli in the Addingtown Shopping Centre.

Magical melding: Modern Asian DUO Dining Room and Bar is fast making its presence felt on the Christchurch foodie scene since the arrival of its new chef and front of house manager Phil Watkins and Megan Stelma, who are themselves a duo. It offers a fresh, classy, and unique take on Asian cuisine.
“I
t's our take on modern Asian food with a European influence,” says Phil, who has recently returned to his home town from Wanaka. With a fine dining background - head chef at a French restaurant in Wanaka and overseas experience in several Michelinstarred establishments - he has impeccable credentials. But his passion is Asian food, with an emphasis on Chinese. “I love the flavours and tastes. It's what I eat all the time,” he says. And at DUO he is able to indulge in his passion. Dishes, all using the freshest ingredients, are clever and original presentations of Chinese, Korean and Japanese classics with a touch of Euro. All are designed for sharing, which is both an Asian tradition and a modern European trend. DUO's signature dishes include Phil's unique take on Dan Dan noodles, steamed Bao buns, CFC (Chinese fried chicken) and the house cheese burger which is like “nothing you've tasted before,” promises Megan. Some, like the French onion soup with braised oxtail dumpling and parmesan wafer, are a little bit cheeky. And everything, from the kimchi to the brioche for that burger, is made on site! The main menu is available for lunch and dinner, with imaginative bar snacks served all day. DUO will be adding Trust the Chef to the everyday menu from September. Available after 5pm daily let the Chef choose your meal for you. With 4-5 courses, depending on specials, it takes the tough choices out of your hands and enables you to experience
their remarkable chef's favourites of the day. This menu is designed for two or more people to enjoy and promotes sharing. “Sharing is a way to relate to people and promote talk about the food.” Says Megan. Megan has selected a drinks list that complements the Asian flavours, including Lady Coriander, a refreshingly crisp cocktail of coriander and lime muddled with Malibu rum, topped off with ginger beer and fresh coriander. Phi is thrilled to be home and is committed to giving something unique back to our newly emerging city. This centrally located restaurant opposite the botanical gardens (hospital end) is already making its mark, with DUO emerging as one of the city's “must visit” venues and a popular place for people to host their personal or business events. METAL ART in city’s hot spots You know you've arrived at the right place when you get to the entrance of Corina and Glen O'Neill's Loburn property. The beautiful iron gates lead up to a striking timber and iron outdoor set, and that's before you've even set foot inside Flaxton Iron's workshop.

or more than 20 years Glen has been fashioning wrought iron and steel into all manner of objects covering a range of industries which are just as difficult to sum up. “We have fitted out more than 250 commercial premises,” Glen says. “Our customer base is predominantly hospitality operators such as restaurants and bars, but we have developed products for a number of other industries including hair salons and retail stores.” A stand-out project was for the Hawkins family sawmill. The client wanted a feature light above each traction engine and Glen was able to utilise old cogs and

other parts, effectively fashioning a range of industrial chandeliers. The result was such a striking one the client's daughter was later married in the space. While much of the company's local work featured in central city bars and restaurants was lost in the earthquakes, Flaxton Iron is playing an increasing role in the 'new' Christchurch as hot spots such as Victoria Street spring up. Jonny Schwass' weapon of choice has been widely reported as the grill and Glen has recently developed a charcoal barbecue for the popular chef. Iron has built a number of products for the likes of Spice Paragon, Mexicano’s and Chinwag. Glen's also developing a feature for the new bar being established on the corner of New Regent and Armagh Streets for Carlton Bar & Eatery proprietor James Murdoch, due to open in late August. “Working with chefs to develop specialised cooking gear is exciting,” Glen says. “And you get a real sense of satisfaction from the work.” Hospitality is a high pressure industry to be involved in and he often finds himself in the city at 4am completing a job in time for a restaurant to open for the breakfast rush, but he clearly thrives on a challenge. “Often a customer will say, 'we're opening in four weeks
and we need 50 tables ready to go',” wife Corina laughs. Coming out of a trailer business may have seemed a bit of a leap to where he's at now, but Glen says he has always had that keen interest in metal work and, although initially focused on the domestic market, once the company completed its first commercial job, Flaxon Iron took on a life of its own through word of mouth. He's since carried out jobs throughout the country, including Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown and, a specialist field with few competitors, there's always something new and exciting around the corner. ven better – they are all fresh, homecooked quality, produced on site by baker Cham Chap who runs the cafe with his wife Sara. As well as the ever popular traditional favourites - mince, steak and cheese, and bacon and egg – Cham makes a huge selection of more exotic fillings ranging from chicken variations to vegetarian, smoked fish and more. And it's not just pies. A range of delicious savouries, muffins, scones, quiches, filled rolls, wraps and sandwiches vie for the attention of hungry customers. Tempting sweet things are available too, with delicious house made cronuts, slices (from traditional favourites to more exotic caramel or lemon meringue), cakes and lolly cakes. Originally from Cambodia, Cham has lived in

With plenty of parking right outside, it is easy to pop in for a takeaway, while those with more time can take a seat and enjoy some delicious home baking at leisure. Window films: The benefits... When it comes to our homes and businesses, first impressions really do count, so we want them to look the part and keep looking the part.
W
indow films not only reduce heat, glare and damaging UV rays from passing through the glass, they increase privacy and safety while preventing break-ins and nasty accidents. There's also decorative and designer films to give your home its very own creative spin. We are becoming increasingly conscious of our ecological footprint. By helping reduce the level of heat, glare and UV rays from entering your home, window films may enable you to become less reliant on air-conditioning during the warmer months and retain the heat in the cooler months. An added bonus with window films is the increase in both daytime and nighttime privacy. Unique tinted films are available which make it more difficult for people to see into your home during the day. And, if internal reflection hampers your stunning views at night, solar films have been designed to cut down internal glare and reflection. Most window films also have the ability to hold together glass in the event of extreme weather conditions and breakage. But if protecting your family and belongings is the priority, security films are up to seven times thicker than standard films and act as an invisible barrier to help prevent potential break-ins and in the event of glass breakage.
Window films may enable you to become less reliant on airconditioning during the warmer months and retain the heat in the cooler months.

Renowned firm WINS GOLD A contemporary family home in Strowan has seen first-time Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards entrant Fleetwood Construction take out a Gold Award in the prestigious 2015 event.
T
he winning home – a modern three bedroom townhouse, with a fourth bedroom currently configured as a home office – exudes contemporary elegance without forfeiting its primary function as a warm and inviting family home. But it's the craftsmanship and attention to detail the home represents which is reflected in the Gold Award. “The House of the Year Awards are associated with high quality workmanship,” Sam Fleetwood explains. “As a smaller boutique business, we
really pride ourselves on maintaining that high quality across all of our projects, so we're extremely pleased to have been recognised at this level.” Sam has been building in Canterbury for more than two decades, establishing the residential building firm in 2003, quickly developing a reputation for building upmarket new homes and undertaking high quality repairs and alterations. As passionate about the industry today as he was in those early years, he
continues to oversee every project, ensuring it meets his high standards. “The Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition is highly regarded, celebrating industry excellence,” Sam says. “We felt this aligned well with our company values, which is why we made the decision to affiliate ourselves with Master Builders and it's great to have our team's hard work and passion acknowledged by such highly respected industry professionals.” For more information phone 0800 381 381, email info@fleetwoodconstruction.co.nz or visit the website www.fleetwoodconstruction.co.nz.

A NEW APPROACH Cymon Allfrey
Designing and building a home is based around our needs, but do we really know and understand what those needs are? Architect Cymon Allfrey explains…
W
e talk about our understanding of sustainability like it is a concept invented by our generation. We incorporate sustainable design and building practices into our homes, yet we have more than one vehicle, we build more than one level and we have more 'stuff' than ever before. The way we design has dramatically changed from previous generations. In discussions today we talk about sustainability and environmental considerations, we marvel at the way in which our contemporaries live and survive 'off-the-grid', yet 150 years ago, there was no grid to be on. We talk about sustainability and being clever about our energy use, however it doesn't deal with the fact that we haven't figured out how to live in a denser urban environment
with a smaller family unit. In 1911 there was an average of 4.7 residents in each home, while in 2013 there was an average of 2.7*. Many years ago when writing my discourse for my architect's registration I referred to, and discussed Australian architect Tone Wheeler's post-war formula for how we design and build: 2+2+2+2+2+2. Each '2' referring to a different component of building which changed in the aftermath of the war: land sizes halved, dwelling sizes doubled, single storey buildings were replaced by double storey, the number of vehicles per dwelling doubled, occupancy halved and the number of bathrooms required doubled. A formula that reflected how we, and our attitudes to our needs, had changed. I was reminded of Wheeler and his

of 4.7 an average s a w re e th In 1911 while in ach home, e in ts n e id res f 2.7* n average o a s a w re e 2013 th formula late last month when I came across an article on stuff.co.nz, 'A Century of Change in New Zealand'. The article highlighted various statistics in which the Census documentation had revealed there had been vast demographic and economic changes between 1911 and 2013. Not unexpected. What was unexpected was the number of dwellings that had been built. While our population in this period has quadrupled

number of dwellings had increased by seven times! A growth which highlights a dramatic dislocation between our physical and psychological needs of habitation. A concept which has seen the architectural response to this deemed, McMansions. Part of my discourse for my registration looked at the model home. What the needs were of this home, how much space was needed for occupancy
and what expectations there were around what was needed to survive. Needs, which over time continue to grow; and in turn one occupies a greater space and continues to increase expectations. Looking back, the question this poses is, if our expectations double, yet our occupancy is decreasing, what can we do to effect change, and how do we rethink how we live.
We need to be achieving a greater level of density that is about space, not cramming our homes closer together. Do you need to be incorporating a particular facility into your design, such as a swimming pool, if there is a shared one available down the road? Perhaps one solution is a change in expectation around how we live, to deal with our smaller family units. Our occupancy is decreasing, yet our building size is doubling, one is going up, the other going down. Why are they not going hand in hand? The question is whether we are serious about adapting to change, to achieving a better more contemporary way of building. Consideration of the fundamentals of how we live is missing. If we can rediscover them, it could allow us to achieve a different, more successful style of housing. * Statistics taken from A Century of Change in New Zealand, by Henry Cooke, published 14 July 2014, stuff.co.nz www.caarc.co.nz

AN EARTHY NEW PALETTE
Spring will bring with it a slightly masculine air this year as we throw open our doors and windows and bring a little of our surroundings inside. It's the forecast from leading colour experts at Dulux who predict earthy browns and greens will be the hero colours for the 2015 spring season.

FOR SPRING “T hink about a formal room or a casual sanctuary and create the mood of a library or space to escape,” Dulux Creative Consultant and Stylist Bree Leech says. “The ambience won't be strictly traditional in style; but rather will have a sophisticated mix of old and new items, with plenty of plants to bring nature inside.” They say reducing our impact on the earth continues to be a crucial community goal as we aspire to get in touch with nature on a more personal level. Responding to the trend, the Dulux Earthwerks palette, includes the range of greens we might discover in our own landscapes, forests and gardens and explores our desire to have greenery in our homes and workspaces. There are nature-inspired greens, from soft silvery greens through to moss and sage leaf and beautiful earthy sepia browns and ochres. “Natural colours such as green and neutrals with green undertones will be pivotal this spring,” Dulux Colour Expert
Andrea Lucena-Orr says. “This includes earthy colours, such as Dulux Herald Island; as well as brighter shades. Even the most neutrally toned home can benefit from splashes of colour.” Above all, homeowners should remember a fresh coat of paint is a simple and inexpensive way to add colour, personalise or create a place to feel comfortable, inspired and happy. So how do these colour experts predict new season's trends? At Dulux they study trends around the world to develop their forecast. They attend trade fairs in Europe, study product and design innovation, colour and finishes, and emerging global designers. They also source information from international agencies which analyse global influences such as fashion, media, world events, technology and science, social fundamentals, financial economics and politics. Expect to see more of these earthy browns and greens in all arenas this coming season.

valon is a motorcycle racer currently in Europe racing the 2015 Pata Honda European Junior Cup. This series is run inside the World Superbike Championship and also hosts a European Women's Cup. After six races and four wins Avalon leads the women's championship by 30 points. “I am able to succeed in this championship with the support of many Kiwi companies, one of them being Circuit Asphalt”, says Avalon. “I have raced together with company owners John and Larry Ross for the past few years and owe part of my success to all that they taught me.” The year started off well for Avalon by winning the NZ championships in the Superlite class, so by March she was well prepared and ready to head back to the strong competition in Europe. From then on, it has been flat out for her as she has travelled to over eleven countries. “It has been great to see and experience snippets of the diversity in each country. As nice as it sounds

however, I am 100% focused on racing while here and tend to see more of race tracks and motorways than anything else.” Currently Avalon is in Andorra training for the final two rounds of the championship starting in Spain on 20 September. “I can't wait to get there and make Circuit Asphalt along with all other Kiwis proud!”

The beautiful experience of warmth How you heat your home has a massive impact on its liveability and comfort. “Home heating isn't a one size fits all,” Simply Heat's Steve Waring explains. “There is an incredibly wide variety of heating options available and a number of factors which determine the best heating system for each environment.”
T
he whole range of those heating systems is available at Simply Heat's expansive showroom on Byron St. Gas and wood fires, solar heating, radiator central heating systems, underfloor hydronic heating and electric and wall heaters all vie for space. “Ducted air heat pump systems are becoming increasingly popular”, Steve says. “We can demonstrate how they work, how they are controlled and how they reduce costs. The Fujitsu system is the ultimate in comfort, creating the perfect even temperature throughout a home at the touch of a button. Because the indoor unit is totally concealed, usually within a ceiling void, it delivers heating and cooling that's a beautiful experience, and yet virtually invisible”. One great thing about Simply Heat is that it is not limited to one or two brands. The company sells all forms and is quite unbiased as to what option will best suit customers' requirements. Simply Heat's owner Steve Waring thing about Simply Heat is the way they keep abreast of improvements in technology. For example, the Fujitsu e3tm series which features a totally new thermodynamic system that delivers more heat for your dollar than ever before. It may be winter, but it only takes a few warm nor'westers and a couple of 20 degree days to start us planning for sunny days and alfresco entertainment so it's no surprise August and September are the busiest months of the year for The Crowded House Furniture Company, purveyors of stylish and competitively priced outdoor furniture.
Prepare for the return of
ALFRESCO LIVING
T
he company, which was launched in 2011, sources and imports its own brand of furniture, designed in New Zealand to Kiwi specifications (generous proportions, tough enough to handle sunshine and snow) and manufactured off shore. They deal directly with the manufacturers and sell direct to the public, either through their website or at shows, keeping overheads low and prices competitive. Viewing is by appointment, and not having a showroom also helps to keep overheads and prices down. Many of the company's sales are through word of mouth, with people admiring the furniture of friends and heading off to buy some themselves. Sun loungers, dining suites, lounge suites, and large bar and stool combos can all be mixed and matched, while an elegant and eye-catching stainless steel egg chair is the pièce de résistance! There's plenty of choice and the trendy, comfortable pieces are equally at home indoors or out. Constructed of UV resistant polyethylene rattan over solid powder coated aluminium frames, the furniture comes in classic black and brown, complete with cushions. Just add personal touches with additional bright
cushions and accessories. Protect your furniture year round with a custom designed cover - either dust proof (a simple answer to those pesky nor' westerly dust storms) or weatherproof, to protect it from Canterbury's temperature extremes. And store your cushions in a waterproof box, designed especially to accommodate larger than average cushions. Buy off the website or call Jodi on 0275332298 to arrange a viewing. The Crowded House Furniture Company can arrange pickups outside normal business hours, and makes deliveries throughout New Zealand. With warm weather in sight, stock levels high and prices low, it's time to buy new outdoor furniture now. Visit www.thecrowdedhouse.co.nz to see the range.
