EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

I

n order to “make the most out of life” we are constantly encouraged to set goals and strive for things, to be the best we can be and follow our dreams. But, funnily enough, one of the articles in this mag has made me realise that to achieve what we aspire to sometimes takes an opposite approach. Sometimes we have to give up on something we've given a lot of importance to. Sometimes we have to make a real effort of simply letting go. Philosopher Eckhart Tolle believes we create and maintain problems because “they give us a sense of identity”. Perhaps this explains why we often hold onto our pain far beyond its ability to serve us. The article I'm referring to is by architect Cymon Allfrey (page 68) where he explores our attachment with Christ Church Cathedral. It's a good metaphor for life, when sometimes our clinging to something prevents us from healing and moving forward. Cymon's perspective reminds us that we often focus on what we want to achieve and overlook what we need to let go of. In everyday life we need to let go of all manner of things from judgemental thoughts and fear of failure, to unrealistic expectations and the mistakes we have made in the past. We all know it's not good for us to hold a grudge but the quote “Holding a grudge is like letting someone live rent free in your brain” is a great way of reminding ourselves to get over being wronged as quickly as possible. Self-proclaimed “Zen Momma” Dina Strada lists things to let go of which will enable us to cut through the ludicrousness of life and find a happy, content place. I had to laugh at a couple of them as they've been lead weights around my ankles at times. Dina's things to let go of: The need to be “perfect”; The need to “People Please” and have everyone like you; Being Right; Beating yourself up for mistakes; Giving your power away to someone else; Anger and resentment; Toxic people; The need for control; and Your ego. And, for Canterbury, perhaps it’s time to let go of icons that no longer define us.

Samuel Miller’s FIVE KINGDOMS King Travis

Good-looking Travis King has just returned to his home in the Chatham Islands after taking part in the initial shooting for a drama/thriller with a bit of romance that was being filmed around the Brick Mill Café, on the Main North Road, at Waikuku.

A

ged 29, Travis plans to return to Canterbury next year to continue playing the role of a horseman in Five Kingdoms, with the chance of possibly becoming a star. “We'll see if there's a future in it for me. I'll give it a go and see what comes of it,” he said at a cafe near Christchurch Airport on the morning of his return to the Chathams. Written directed and produced by Samuel Miller, Five Kingdoms is set in the fictitious fiefdom of Miraval early last century, where electricity is virtually unknown, with water, fire, steam and wind still the main sources of energy. Played by Rusty Fitzgerald, the main character in the film is a monk named Anandas, who is on retreat at the

His task is to retain the land in the valley for the monastery but he must survive a full year and falls afoul of the townsfolk. In Travis's introductory scene, he rides into Victorbius drunk, insults and spits on the mayor and then falls off his horse. The monk is the only person who helps him. Travis practised for the fall by several times leaping off a 44-gallon drum. The cast of Five Kingdoms also includes David Round as Mayor Fandacious and Paul Sanderson as stonecutter Horatious. It follows on his successful documentary, Charles Luney – Master Builder, which was screened recently at the Hollywood Cinema at Sumner. Samuel first met Travis on Pitt Island, in the Chathams, where the director was working on a documentary, The Wizard & The Commodore. He will be going back there for the annual pig-and-weka hunt with Christchurch's Wizard later this year, and to complete the filming with the Commodore of the Chatham Islands. long term Lyttelton resident, artist, foodie and event organiser, Gill Hay is a fabulous ambassador for Banks Peninsula. Many city dwellers will remember her from the days when she founded The Preservatory Delicatessen and ran it for ten years here. Gill still does a little catering and food consultancy, as well as event organising, but she has always been painting and has exhibited regularly in New Zealand and overseas. Her current focus is organising Sculpture on the Peninsula which is the South Island's largest contemporary sculpture exhibition on at Loudon Farm, Banks Peninsula from 6-8 November. Gill was on the original organising committee of Sculpture on the Peninsula and has been the event organiser since 2001. I caught up with Gill to find out more about this fabulous upcoming exhibition and about her own creative side…

12 September 24, 2015 Metropol

Q& with A Gill You are a well-known local artist, how does your creative eye assist in organising an event such as Sculpture on the Peninsula? Part of my job at the event is organising where each work will be positioned. This involves working closely with each artist, understanding where they are coming from with what they have created, and a knowledge of the logistics of what is involved in installing different types of work. Works have to not only relate to each other but also to the environment, so it necessitates a strong visual sense. And from your foodie background – what kind of food will be available? The Grand Opening on Friday 6 November will have contemporary style cocktail food with chef Abby Taylor from Underground South in charge. Guests will be tempted with treats served on spoons including chargrilled asparagus drizzled with a balsamic reduction or a wild mushroom risotto. Because people wander around the sculptures we also have barbeques set up in different places to tempt people along their way with whitebait fritters, marinated garlic prawns, our take on a Croque-monsieur and American hot dogs. And there are sweet treats too, homemade meringues and salted caramel sundaes. On the weekend we are selling a range of gourmet pizzas and toasted BLT rolls, we are baking fresh scones and lamingtons each day and the girls from Rangi Ruru will man the ice cream stall making a range of sundaes.

HAY How many exhibitors are involved this year and in what range of media? This year we have 70 exhibitors including the cricket bats that will be auctioned at the opening. There is a great diversity of mediums, scale and approach to sculpture. Most contemporary mediums will be on display from marble to glass, to recycled steel plus ceramics. Who are the most well-known sculptors exhibiting? Hannah Kidd has created a large golden horse. It's nearly three meters high and we are hoping to position it on the ridge line, there're just a few logistics involved in getting it up there. Graham Bennett is creating a work from aluminium and steel, Mark Whyte is carving a marble cloud, Hugh Prebble from Oamaru is carving a series of works from macrocarpa that will form an interactive installation in the large paddock called "Relics", Juliet Novena Sorrell has work going in the farm slaughter house. 'Dream House' will comprise of 10 ceramic dolls. In contrast Aaron te Rangiao has taken over one of the farm sheds for his installation of carved Patu. Tim Wraight who won the award last year is carving a wooden fence and Cheryl Lucas is creating ceramic Doomsday pots. Bill Hammond, Phil Price and Dean Venrooy are also part of the cricket bat auction. Please tell us about Loudon Farm and the area the exhibition will cover?

OUT & ABOUT

Loudon Farm is a working farm owned by Philip King and Sarah Lovell-Smith. The area we use for the exhibition is several acres that surround the original homestead. Works are installed in surprising places: in old sheds, in fields, on the ridge line, up macrocarpa tress… Part of the intrigue of the event for both adults and children is discovering the work. What is the format of each day's entertainment? On Saturday and Sunday there is scheduled entertainment happening each day. On Saturday 7 November it begins at 1.30pm with Lil Chuck, 2.30pm The Twisty Twins, 4.30pm Carmel Courtney and friends, 5.30pm Radius Music Jazz Duo, 6.30pm Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers. On Sunday 8 November: 12pm Lil Chuck, 1pm Twisty Twins, 2pm Radius music, and 3pm Devilish Mary. How many visitors are you expecting and how can they book tickets? Tickets for the Grand opening on Friday 6 November will go on sale from our website www.sculpturenz.co.nz or at Ballantynes from 1 October, cost is $70

each. On Saturday and Sunday tickets are $12 with children under 12 free. Tickets can be bought on line or at the gate. We are expecting a lot of people over the weekend as it is a great day out with family and friends. The event was initially launched as a fundraiser for Cholmondeley; how much has Sculpture on the Peninsula contributed over recent years? This is the ninth Sculpture on the Peninsula. Proceeds from all events have gone to Cholmondeley – around $500,000. The 2013 event donated $75,000.

in this currently series I am combining that with charcoal drawing on canvas. What music are you enjoying at present? Marlon Williams. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Don't start smoking. What is your favourite drink? Coffee What one book would you recommend everyone read? Patrick White, The Vivisector.

If you are not event managing or cooking I believe you'll be painting – what do you love to paint? I am currently working towards a show at Little River Gallery in April next year. It is in the early stages but is loosely combining an ongoing interest in drapery with landscape.

What are you like at parties? Good at providing the food.

What preferred media do you use? I paint largely with oil on canvas through

What is next on your wish list? A trip to Morocco.

What do you love to do on a Sunday afternoon? Dog walk.

Q RICHARD & A LUCY

OUT & ABOUT

with

Y

our pet is in better hands than you could ever have imagined if he meets Veterinarian Richard Lucy! Richard has done plenty of stints in private veterinarian practice both in NZ and the UK, he's also travelled extensively and, whilst taking the long road home from Europe, toured through West Africa where he worked in a primate rehabilitation centre treating injured gorillas, chimps and bonobos. He has also been a Senior Medical Registrar at Sydney University, and donned a different hat when he retrained in human echocardiography. When he finally returned to Christchurch, just in time for the earthquakes, he worked at Christchurch Public Hospital in the Cardiology Department before returning to his true passion – looking after animals.

What is the most memorable animal you have treated? A python that I bought from some little boys on the side of the road in Nigeria. It was blind as it hadn't shed its eye-scales. It travelled with us across Nigeria and we fed it rats that we paid the local children to catch for it. We released it in a National Park and the local paper took photos of the crazy white man with his pet snake! You have been up close with gorillas, chimps and bonobos – what are they like to treat? Amazing. They are so similar to people. They can be incredibly gentle and trusting or just savage. You have to be very careful as an adult gorilla could easily tear your arm off. The babies are super cute. Have you encountered many dangerous situations when treating animals? Lots of times – you have to have your wits about you and constantly 'read' the animals. What was it like shifting from veterinary work to work in the public hospital cardiology department? Different challenges – but the humans don't bite or scratch as much! Seriously – I really enjoyed it, the whole team at Christchurch Public Hospital do a marvellous job in difficult times. You are trained in human echocardiography – what is that? Using ultrasound to diagnose heart disease. It is an essential tool in diagnosis

Richard Lucy of a wide variety of heart conditions. The cardiologist can then appropriately treat the patient. You see pets from all over the South Island for diagnostic ultrasound and CT scanning – are you one of the few that can perform this? I am the only vet in the South Island with Postgraduate training in Imaging and Cardiorespiratory Medicine. We are the only practice in the South Island with an in-house CT scanner. What can you discover with this kind of diagnostic scanning? We can diagnose a wide variety of problems ranging from causes of cough to causes of fainting or vomiting and diarrhoea. If there is an internal problem we can help! Most animals must be very nervous when they see you, how do you calm them? Take time with them, reassure them and be gentle. If all else fails a little bit of sedation does wonders. What is one piece of advice you regularly dispense to pet owners? Get pet insurance – vet bills are expensive!

Careful thought has been put into the selection of designs to allow each home to suit individual needs, with the second bedroom space easily used as either an office or an additional living area. “No matter where you are, you can look out over gardens,” says Nola, with each apartment

block joined by the linkway, which will also connect them to the planned Russley Homestead. With construction now underway, the Homestead will have the feel of a Country Club, providing the ideal space for social gatherings, including a dining area, bar, library, spacious lounge, hair salon and a wellness centre. “Everyone here is very welcoming,” says Nola. “We have a great group of social people, and you can be as social or independent as you like.” For some this may be time spent in the community garden, an afternoon on the bowling green, or watching a movie in their purpose built movie theatre in the Bealey Apartment complex. Contact Nola on (03) 982 8280 for more information or visit them on www.russleyvillage.co.nz. Viewing will impress!

CHRISTCHURCH WINS nine Top Shop awards The best shops from Canterbury, West Coast, and the Upper South Island were named at the Retail NZ Top Shop Awards on Thursday 3 September, with Christchurch retailers taking out nine awards across a range of categories.

B

eginning in Auckland at the end of July and working its way South, the evening was the final of five awards celebrations where the top retailers across New Zealand were recognised for their success. “The Retail NZ Top Shop awards celebrate all those who have achieved retail excellence over the past year, and aim to lift the bar of retailing in New Zealand,” Retail NZ Chief Executive Mark Johnston said. “I offer special congratulations to the Christchurch retailers who stood out as the best in the region in their categories.” “Specsavers Papanui won the Fashion & Footwear category and Traiteur European Butchery took top honours among Food & Beverage stores. In both cases, judges were impressed by the modern, inviting shops and the high level of customer service.” “Renaissance, The Art of Beauty in Sumner won the Health & Beauty category standing out because of the exceptional product knowledge of its staff. The Home & Garden award went to the bright and vibrant Global Living Homebase in Marshlands. Spark Moorhouse Ave won the Technology & Electronics, while Flight Centre Barrington took out the National/Multi-Store award. The Multi-Store OmniChannel award went to Christchurch’s KILT.” “The coveted People's Choice award for the best Top Shop in the region went to Hair Products Online. It received the most votes from the public through the Top Shop voting app and website.” Winning stores excelled in their mystery shop assessment, as well as making it through the review from the panel of judges. The panel included well known retailer, Kathryn Wilson, as well

Metropol was the proud sponsor of the Small Single Store Award at the 2015 Top Shop Awards. The winner was Living Light Candles in Nelson with runner up Emma's at Oxford. Metropol’s managing director Trevor Laplanche praised all entrants involved in small business saying that, particularly in Christchurch, they have overcome many unexpected hurdles in the last year or so. “Many small Christchurch store owners have demonstrated more resilience than they thought they were capable of. They have not only survived but are creating unique, innovative and inspiring environments that their staff and customers love.”

BD's contemporary premises are located within the four avenues amidst a handful of cafes and bars – a prime position from which to watch the city centre grow. New clients' aren't simply scheduled in with the next available stylist – a little background info is gathered and they are matched with a likeminded stylist. Summer lovin’ fashion It's time to put away your winter boots, woolly tights, and staple puffer jacket. Say goodbye (or see you later) to the dark moody days of winter because the daffies are up and spring has sprung.

A

t Lincoln's fashion destination, House of Allure, the new season has brought with it an enormous range of inspirational summer fashion to suit the most classic and outrageous of us all. The knowledgeable staff tell us that this summer we can expect bohemian-style dresses, relaxed fits, fine details like embroidery, lots of linen and natural fibres, and, of course, buckets of colour. Not Your Daughters Jeans (NYDJ) fans will be super excited with the highly anticipated new range from this iconic American jeans label. There are more aged and distressed fabrics, as well as the classic cropped jean in a variety of colours including a not-so-classic metallic pink. Following on from winter, denim on denim is to be embraced and what better to pair your favourite jeans with than a colourful cropped denim jacket from Loobie's Story. At House of Allure, the staff are not there to push you into buying something. It's more like trying on clothes at your best friend's house. Owner Lee Parker says, “If it doesn't look great, we don't let you buy it. We're not forcing trends; we're really just trying to help people find their own personal style.”

Spring is the perfect time to… rejuvenate your beauty regime Spring is a great time to review the beauty products you are using and evaluate if they are living up to their claims.

I

t is also a good time to look at what beauty treatments are available and what new treatments are on offer. New Zealand is very quick to take on new treatments once they have been found to be safe and effective. The New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine has just had its annual conference in Queenstown with experts from all over the world demonstrating the latest products and techniques for facial rejuvenation. It’s very important for doctors and nurses who practice cosmetic medicine to keep up-to-date with what’s available so that they can offer their clients safe and effective treatments. Dr Brigid Lee from the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic said, “It is

our job to make sure that clients look natural and beautiful – you should not be able to detect that someone has had anything done. I like my clients to look slightly younger and refreshed – the perfect comment from their friends is that their skin looks good!” “One of Australia’s leading plastic surgeons showed us a beautiful technique to rejuvenate the area around the mouth, to lift and support the fine lines that occur around the lips, making the lips appear slightly fuller without actually doing a lip treatment, and all done without the risk of any bruising. My clients have been thrilled with their results from this new treatment. ”

Good looking legs for summer Mr Peter Laws of Veins NZ has recently returned from Seoul Korea where he was lucky enough to be invited to speak at the UIP (Union Internationale de Phlebologie) symposium. This was a tremendous honour with over 800 delegates from around the world.

M

r Law's talk entitled “The Venaseal Closure System - a novel treatment strategy for CVI” (Chronic venous insufficiency) was extremely well received. It appears there is an ever-growing interest in this new technique. Mr Laws has a wealth of experience in minimally invasive techniques to treat varicose veins, with over 10 years' experience in laser, radiofrequency ablation, and was the first to perform Venaseal in New Zealand. Venaseal will soon become available throughout Australasia. The procedure minimises the number of injections required, is virtually painless and can, in some instances, eliminate the need to wear stockings all together. This can be a real bonus in the hot summer months. “As new techniques become available it's important to recognise that each treatment strategy has its own indications, risks and benefits,” says Mr Laws. “To be able to advise patients correctly it's important to know about and be able to offer

Vintage meets

MODERN

There's a reason online shopping has become a part of our daily habits. Not only is it time-friendly but it's also a way to score exclusive items. Firklover is somewhat of a hidden gem when it comes to online fashion stores and, even better, it was founded here in New Zealand.

F

“Our collections are luxury ranges with high hem lines, swirling psychedelic patterns and fluorescent eye-popping colours.”

Reloved Quality Clothing

irklover's designs emulate the dynamic nature of the 1960s and '70s. They bring the best of revolutionary vintage into modern couture with their signature clean lines, timeless tailoring and expressive aesthetics. “Our collections are luxury ranges with high hem lines, swirling psychedelic patterns and fluorescent eye-popping colours,” says Clover. “They embody the radical rebellion of the Skinny Sixties, the class of Jackie Kennedy, the iconic independence of Jean Shrimpton, and the pop culture appeal of Andy Warhol,” she says. By creating limited collections Firklover offer exclusivity through individuality – it's highly unlikely that customers will spot someone wearing the same garment. And there's no shortage of inspiration from collection to collection when the design brief is essentially vintage-meets-modern. What's more, being a NZ label the garments are flexible with the NZ lifestyle, particularly our Kiwi summer. They are aesthetically in sync with the blooming colours of seasonal surroundings, not to mention stylistically practical for a number of occasions. Have a browse or place an order at www.firklover.co.nz.

Back in 1987 Tricia Cuthbert had a vision for quality preschool education and she established Lindisfarne Nursery School in Linwood to turn that vision into action. Tricia is remembered for her inspiring attitude and dedication and Lindisfarne has been part of the Cuthbert family ever since.

HOME-LIKE ENVIRONMENT

“O

ur aim is to provide parents and families with a nursery school which respects their individual needs and aspirations,” says Michelle Cuthbert, daughter of the nursery school's founder. “We provide full-time, part-time and casual enrolment opportunities for preschoolers so families can organise a schedule that suits their requirements.” All the teachers are qualified in early childhood education and they provide a learning experience tailored to individual children's needs and interests. Because

the nursery school is based in two lovely old villas it has a real feeling of 'home' which means children settle in quickly and are happy and confident in the environment. “We offer the best of both worlds for parents. The children are looked after and are safe. They are also prepared for going to school and yet it is all in a home-like environment.” Lindisfarne's transition to school programme has earned special commendation from local primary schools. PLANS UNVEILED FOR CITY'S CULTURAL PRECINCT Canterbury Museum and the Ravenscar Trust have unveiled plans for New Zealand's first contemporary house museum to display the Trust's collections of New Zealand arts, sculpture, designer furniture and classical antiquities.

C

anterbury Museum will own the Ravenscar House Museum and operate it jointly with the Trust. Christchurch City Council, which owns the preferred site at 52 Rolleston Avenue, will consult the community on whether to gift the land to the Museum in perpetuity. Jim and Dr Susan Wakefield, who cochair the Ravenscar Trust, began collecting art in the early 1990s. Their Collections were previously housed in a Trust-owned residence in Scarborough which was extensively damaged in the earthquakes. The Trust will use a combination of its own funds and its earthquake insurance settlement with IAG to build the $13 million development. Dr Susan Wakefield says that the couple had always envisaged that they would gift their Scarborough house and the Ravenscar Collections to the people

of Christchurch, but the earthquakes forced a change of plan. “We think the Rolleston Avenue site is the best available in central Christchurch for our house museum concept. The design, by award-winning architect Andrew Patterson, together with the scale and landscaping of the building are sympathetic to the surrounding two and three-storey heritage buildings,” says Dr Wakefield. Museum Director, Anthony Wright says that the Wakefields' extraordinary generosity will create a development of national significance which will enrich the cultural life of the city and complement other visitor attractions in the Cultural Precinct. “This is a tremendously exciting new development for Canterbury Museum. We have a strong design theme in our collections and programming, and we'll benefit from having a purpose-built

facility in which to exhibit and promote these in the future. The new building will also enhance and complement any future development of parts of the Museum's current site,” he says. Mayor Lianne Dalziel says she is thrilled by the generosity of the Ravenscar Trust. “It really is a very special gesture. The Wakefields lost their home in the earthquakes and are opting to replace it in a way that will be of enormous benefit to the city. The Council will make a final decision on gifting the land, currently used as a car park, once we have received feedback from residents and other interested parties.” The Ravenscar Collections of about 300 paintings and objects are regarded as one of the country's most important private collections. They feature significant paintings by leading artists such as Frances Hodgkins, Rita Angus and Colin McCahon.

EXERCISE EQUIPMENT: Mix it up Steady-state cardio vs. high intensity, interval vs. endurance, low impact vs. high impact. Confused? With so many options available, you'd be forgiven for sticking to what you know. But they even advise against that – your body gets used to it and becomes too efficient.

S

o other than trying a new sport each season, buying an entire range of exercise equipment or driving across town to a new gym, what else can you do? Mr Rental has the perfect alternative.

Limit zero

With Mr Rental you can try a whole range of exercise equipment with no ongoing costs. All you pay is a one-off security bond and a monthly fee (which can be cancelled at any time) and you can exercise in the comfort of your home and enjoy the latest technology. Renting your equipment also allows you to try it to see how committed you are and if it works for you – because let's face it, when it comes to exercise a onesize-fits-all approach just doesn't work. And when your body figures out what you are up to, you can switch it up with another training programme on a new piece of equipment. Choose from the latest treadmills, exercise bikes, rowers and cross trainers, and get ready for summer. Also available at Mr Rental is a huge range of appliances, furniture, TV and audiovisual equipment, computers and phones. It's convenient and cost-

SMOKY, SPICY BARBEQUED SHRIMP It's time to fire up the barbeque and prepare for alfresco dining. From the recipe book Lose Wheat in 4 Weeks this recipe is simple to prepare and takes almost no time. Serve with a quick side like Roasted Asparagus with Garlic and Orange Zest for an easy dinner.

MARINATED BARBEQUED SHRIMP Dairy-Free | Nut-Free | Paleo-Friendly Serves 4 Ingredients 450g large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 2 tablespoons regular olive oil Juice of 2 lemons Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 C finely chopped parsley, for garnish (optional) Method 1. Season the shrimp with the cayenne pepper and paprika, and place in a zipper-close bag. Add the oil and lemon juice, shake to combine, and marinate for about 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, prepare a gas or charcoal grill for mediumheat cooking. 3. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper, and grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or just until cooked through. Garnish with the parsley (if using). Timesaving Tip: To save on prep time, ask for peeled, deveined shrimp at the seafood counter. It may be a little more expensive, but it's definitely worth it.

RICHARD SINKE’S - DUX CENTRAL Dux Central, Richard Sinke's latest addition to Christchurch's hospitality venues, is open in the former Twisted Hop building in Poplar Lane.

As part of Christchurch's Innovation Precinct, on the three blocks between St Asaph, Lichfield and Manchester Streets, the two-storey Dux Central has a craft-beer bar, a wine-and-spirits bar, a speakeasy-style bar, a functions venue, a large covered atrium courtyard and an extended upper deck.

E

ver since the earthquakes closed down Richard's very popular Dux de Lux at the Arts Centre – made up of a restaurant, bar and beer garden with live music – he had been looking for sites to reopen all aspects of that complex. This led to the opening of a music venue and bar, Dux Live, in Lincoln Road, and his vegetarian/seafood restaurant in the old station-master's home in Riccarton Road. Until more recently, however, he had still been looking for the ideal place for a special bar that would handle his own craft beer. Dux Dine had come into existence because Richard often drove past the Riccarton Road site, noticing that the

He spoke to the owners, who were more than happy to have the building and surrounding garden transformed into a restaurant. Similarly, in conversations with friends, Richard learnt that the Twisted Hop building was being renovated as part of the development of the Innovation Precinct. After some negotiations, and a

three-and-a-half year search, Richard obtained it for his Dux Central. “The building has been restored to 100 per cent of the building code. It is bigger and so is the courtyard area in front. We are brewing Dux beer offsite and having it delivered,” says Richard. The new layout and design, including the four bars, has been created by Richard's wife, through her business, Lisa Sinke Design. Lisa was also the interior designer for Dux Dine. “It's not a formal, traditional restaurant. People can dine anywhere, inside and out, with the food designed for casual sitdown meals,” says Richard. “I've been interested in food for a long time. The food at Dux Dine reflects my

However, Dux Central is along the lines of more modern pub grub – all the favourites, pizzas, dumplings, burgers, with a very modern twist. "Dux Central has a spot that suits for all occasions, whether it be a drink with mates in the sun, wines with the girls, a family dinner out, a special date night,

pre-dinner cocktails, or hosting a party to be remembered." Dux Central is the second venture to open in the Poplar Lane area. Johnny Moore's Brick Farm restaurant opened there in the middle of last year. Tenants in the Innovation Precinct, which includes the site of the old McKenzie and Willis building, will not only be hospitality

venues. Dux Central's neighbours will also include Vodafone in a $50-million building, Kathmandu's $20M headquarters, and the $5M Epic Sanctuary in the Tuam-Manchester-St Asaph Street block. There will also be a seven-deck car park. “This area will develop into a mixture of business, retail and hospitality. We're one of the first to open in what will become a vibrant part of town, and you'll be able to sit here and watch Christchurch being reborn,” says Richard.

INGREDIENTS Pan-fried Chicken 450g chicken breasts, skin-on Creamy Leeks and Beans 1 tablespoon butter 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 shallot, finely diced 2 leeks, white and pale green part only, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon chopped thyme leaves 1 teaspoon dried tarragon leaves 1 1/4 cups chicken stock 2 cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 3/4 cup crème fraîche 1 tablespoon chopped parsley leaves Lemon Tarragon Butter and Green Beans 2 tablespoons butter (at room temperature) 1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon leaves Zest of 1/2 a lemon 2 teaspoons lemon juice 300g green beans, ends trimmed

METHOD Preheat oven to 190°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper. Bring a medium pot of salted water to the boil. 1. Pat chicken dry with paper towels and season skin with salt and pepper. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a large fry-pan on high heat and fry chicken, skin-side-down, for 2 minutes, until skin is crispy and golden. Turn over and transfer to prepared baking tray. Set aside. 2. Return pan to medium heat, add butter and a drizzle of olive oil and cook garlic and shallot for 30 seconds until garlic is golden and fragrant. Add leeks, thyme and tarragon and cook for 6–8 minutes, until softened, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. LIVING IN A MODERN CITY With property prices soaring, the quarter acre dream is fast becoming just that for many… a dream. Greg Young from Young Architects talks to Metropol magazine about another option to being able to afford your own home – buying an apartment…

“I

'm not coming up with any new suggestions with this concept – Rome for example has had apartment blocks for more than two thousand years. In Roman architecture, apartment blocks were called “insula” (Latin for “island”), and they housed most of the urban population of ancient Rome, including people of lower or middle class status (the plebs), and all but the wealthiest from the upper-middle class. Only the traditional elite and the very wealthy lived in single family residences, but the two kinds of housing were intermingled in the city rather than segregated into separate neighbourhoods. This is a formula that works and we can learn from this, rather than repeat the mistakes of post-war England and the tenement blocks built that have subsequently turned into slums in some cases. Apartment living is a change in lifestyle for many, but Christchurch is well suited to it. We have numerous parks, many within easy walking distance within the four avenues, negating the need for having a large back yard – this is especially attractive with other people maintaining it for you. Flats in Christchurch in the '50s and '60s especially, still seem perfectly suited for city living – albeit with bedrooms that will allow a king size bed rather than just a single. Kitchens were smaller and occupants ate out more and bought more fresh food as required, as is quite standard in apartment living overseas.

Apartment living is a change in lifestyle for many, but Christchurch is well suited to it.

Gloucester Street Apartments – Young Architects, 2013 Car parking was clustered, and stairs shared, which adds to the sense of community within the apartment complexes – this can be further embellished with communal landscaped courtyards (or village greens on a larger scale) and central atriums. The hospitality venues in the city are being rebuilt, with a wide variety to explore and discover already, rather than being tied to the suburban kitchen – this is a valid reason for me personally to live in one, as I'm a terrible cook who likes a wine. With the advantages of Christchurch being rebuilt as a modern city, come the disadvantages in the cost of purchasing buildings – this is an issue in most cities, and apartment living is the solution in most as well. Financially, apartments are often more cost effective to heat and maintain, and cheaper to build due to

Ostia Insulae – architect unknown, circa 200 AD

Dorset Street Flats – Sir Miles Warren, 1957 scales of economy and smaller land size. Rather than seeing apartments as a negative, I think we should consider them as a different way of enjoying a modern lifestyle… designed well they can be a joy to live in.”

n Hanmer Springs you will ďŹ nd the wonderful Majuba Gallery. From its very beginning this gallery has featured exquisite collections of Danish-designed DYRBERG/KERN jewellery and watches. Now they have the latest collection of these dramatic and sophisticated statement designs. Gitte Dyrberg, the Design Director has an everlasting love with anything made with chains and the combinations are endless. This current collection of modern chains is full of contrasts with the chains intertwined in the most delicate way. Small crystals embedded in heavy metal tags accentuate the contrast. With school holidays just around the corner, now is the perfect time to book your budding artists in for something new and unique that will see them having fun while they learn. And, better yet, you can enjoy the great coffee in the café while they do. “Our painters get to select what they want to paint and we provide the tuition for them one-on-one in a fun classroom environment,” managing director Simon Walmisley explains. “The café is available for walk-ins, but offers great student support, enabling students to catch up after a class and develop strong lasting friendships.” The one-on-one attention is what enables the art school to cater to a wide range of abilities, while the classroom environment, which can see newbies seated next to the advanced artists, offers an inspiring environment with students learning off one another.

IS IT TIME TO RIP THE PLASTER OFF? Despite his love and passion for Christ Church Cathedral, Architect Cymon Allfrey explores whether a future without our most famous icon, would offer our city a greater opportunity for progress… Cymon Allfrey

E

ntertaining an old friend recently I was faced with his disbelief that we are comfortable and happy with the use of the word 'progress' as a descriptor in relation to the rebuild. A former Cantabrian, he is now working as an architect in Australia and over the last five years has returned only a handful of times to Christchurch; each time to be dismayed at the reality in which we are living. Emerging from these discussions arose one of my regular concerns, that the progress of our city is unnecessarily protracted by a handful of sites – most notably in this instance, Christ Church Cathedral. The reality we are faced with is that we will never again have what was there. As children we all fell and cut our knees. Cuts and injuries, which instantly felt better with a plaster, however the day always came to remove it. While ripping it off ignited pain and hurt for a few moments, it quickly passed. While it would hurt to lose the Cathedral,

perhaps we are at a point in which we have to 'rip the plaster off', in order to enable us to get on with the healing. My biggest fear is that while it stands there in ruins the 'myth' around the icon is getting bigger and bigger. For generations the Cathedral has been a symbol of the city, a place of heritage and a sight of which we are all familiar. However has our passion and reason for conservation grown from a connection to this, or have we begun to place too much emphasis on the 'myth'? Are we looking at the value of the building with rose coloured glasses? While the history and iconic nature of the structure are important, we are failing to look at the building for what it was. Like a lot of colonial architecture, at the time of its conception and subsequent construction it was simply about stamping a mark into a landscape, without any consideration or relevance to the surrounding environment. A concept that is essential in the planning of any

modern day building. With or without the Cathedral life has changed, and we need to be asking ourselves how we can best be honoring the site in which our greatest icon stood. The options for its future are contrived; focused either inwardly or on the past, they fail to reference the potential we are faced with. I am an advocate for saving the Cathedral, but I am concerned that we are moving into a dangerous place. Perhaps we just have to let go. Clinging to what we have isn't allowing our city to heal and move forward. Designed to break the deadlock, the current process of mediation can only be a good thing and, whatever way it goes, we have to accept the decision and commit to a pathway. Sometimes there is a cost to moving forward, be it emotional, historical, financial or all three. But, if losing the Cathedral is going to give us a better city, I will happily concede defeat. www.caarc.co.nz

THE ULTIMATE in extra-clear, clean glass Home owners choose frameless glass shower enclosures to enhance the beauty of their bathrooms; however with the visual deterioration caused by soap scum, limescale and hardwater marks, that beauty can quickly diminish.

I

mported from Europe and available from high performance glass supplier Viridian Glass, Timeless® is an anti-corrosion shower glass designed for shower and bath screens. Comprising an extra-clear glass with lower iron content than standard glass, minimising the green tinge seen on the edges, Timeless glass also features a unique magnetron coating that deflects the buildup of limescale and hardwater marks on the glass. Much more than just a coating, the unique properties that make Timeless stand out from the crowd, are processed into the glass during manufacture, creating an anti-corrosion effect which is guaranteed to last for 10 years. Water simply slips over the surface of the glass, limiting deposits, and any residue will clean off more easily than on non-treated glass. Additionally, condensation evaporates faster than on non-treated glass. So day in, day out, the glass is protected against staining buildup and maintains its attractive appearance. Timeless is the ultimate in shower glass, with no staining, discolouring or white marks, for beautiful bathrooms that really are timeless. For more information contact Euroglass on 0800 387 645 or visit www.euroglass.co.nz.

ulti-unit buildings have shared property ownership structures and include dwellings in a multiunit building, as well as standalone or joined dwellings on the one site. But if there's one thing local construction firm Buildtech excels at, it's a challenge. Immediately following the Canterbury earthquakes, Buildtech's focus was on remediating and strengthening damaged residential and commercial buildings, carrying out thousands of repairs throughout the city. Now the company is involved in the larger scale and more complex properties, such as multi-unit body corp work, Buildtech director Israel Cooper explains. “We've completed more than 2100 earthquake repairs across the spectrum, from small repairs to complex multimillion dollar hillside repairs.” “With that, we have developed a range

of expertise in remediation work and we enjoy the complexity of multiple clients on one site.” Offering most trades in-house, Buildtech has the resources and expertise to deliver on the larger projects, such as the Salisbury Street townhouses which

have been completed under budget, despite technical challenges. Another key area of focus for the company is the 'as is where is' market. With cash settlements allowing both insurer and homeowner to walk away without the need for repairs or remediation, 'as is, where is' properties – both residential and commercial – are flooding the local market. And, whether you're an investor or a homeowner attracted to the price offered by these properties, you will need an experienced team to get your insurance reinstated. Buildtech has both the experience and expertise to ensure these properties are repaired to code and your insurance reinstated, with strong internal quality assurance processes ensuring the process runs smoothly before being checked off by council. “We've carried out more repairs than anyone else in the city,” Israel says. “With our experience, we've worked with large numbers of contractors, so we know who the best in Christchurch is and, as a result, we're drawing on some of the best expertise in the industry to get the very best outcome for our clients.” Buildtech is located at 33 Birmingham Drive, Middleton, phone (03) 366 6662 or visit www.buildtech.co.nz.

Specialist work to rebuild city icon Specialist skills and dedication have combined with the latest in engineering technology, to help bring an icon back to the central city.

“W

e've been working with Dux for 15 years,” says Simon from Gascraft Engineering, who has completed plumbing and gasfitting to all services at Dux Central, including kitchen and bar areas, internal and outdoor heating, and bathrooms over the past five months. “It has been great to work with their team again.” Gascraft Engineering has Gascraft apply the same level of excellence to all their work, from large scale commercial to creating bespoke gas features.

“We work with the architect and the client to tease out the concept,” says Simon of their bespoke work, which has included outdoor gas flares for high end residential properties, sculptural flame interior pieces, the clean modern lines of a gas fireplace, and 15 years making the eye catching gas flares for Crusaders’ rugby matches. They use their experience obtained from their 21 years on the job and specialist international training to perfect their bespoke work, with the skills easily transferred from large scale

commercial projects. “A big part of our work is installing and commissioning large bake ovens,” says Simon, who also installs industrial spray booths for the spray painting industry in New Zealand and Australia. With a core team of four specialist gasfitters and plumbers, Gascraft provides a wide range of services, and works with selected contractors to complete projects. Simon sees the small team dynamic as key to the success of their work, allowing them to be mobile and fluid in their approaches, and to manage communication across Australasia via real time monitoring. They utilise the latest technology to create the best products for their clients, and to provide efficient, clean air and innovative systems, such as hybrid hot water systems which use gas and heat pump technology. 175 Ilam Road is a special home, that will immediately captivate you upon entering. Architecturally designed by Holger Henning-Hansen and built in the late 60s, this home evokes all the style of the "Christchurch School". Well positioned and thoughtfully conceived, the home has been built to take every advantage of the private north facing garden and stream outlook. The ground floor consists of a large open plan living area, partially separated to contain a formal dining area. There is a beautiful garden view from this room, with French doors leading to the patio. The room also has an existing fireplace, and although this can no longer be used, a gas fire could be easily installed. The kitchen is generous and well appointed. There's a breakfast bar for informal dining, a walk in pantry as well as direct access to the patio. The home has two bedrooms downstairs, the master with an en-suite and walk in robe. The other bedroom is also a double, and both are built for the sun and have patio access. There is also second bathroom on this level. The upstairs space was a later addition to the original home and was sympathetically designed by John Trengrove. The area consists of a double bedroom, study space and its own bathroom. Again, these rooms capture all the afternoon sun. Elegance endures, and this home has certainly stood the test of time. The well thought out grounds compliment the simplicity and Scandinavian influence of the home offering a timeless and peaceful residence.

Well located, being zoned for Cobham Intermediate, Burnside and Christchurch Boys High Schools and only a short distance to shops and services. Properties such as this are a rarity in the market. Our vendors are downsizing, giving you the opportunity to become the next caretaker of this wonderful home.
