The language of the urban landscape Kara Burrowes: Citified Reiteration marries the abstract with the tangible.
Elements from the cityscape are selected and reinterpreted to form a unique object with a new dialect of expression.
K
ara’s work focuses on the language of the urban landscape, the patterns and incidentals. Elements from the cityscape are selected and reinterpreted to form a unique object with a new dialect of expression. There is a balance between preservation and reinvention and a tendency to transform the mundane into lustre. This exhibition borrows slices and snippets of the landscape, changes and relayers them, resulting in a new language. Wood offcuts are re-purposed and threads from pre-used vinyl billboards are individually selected and used to create new patterns. Stenciling techniques are used to adhere onto and then peel off to reveal further patterns. The exhibition is running from 7 December 2016 - 20 January 2017 at Christchurch QbStudios - 18 Bernard Street, Addington.

Sometimes all it takes for great things to happen is for people to meet and begin a conversation. This was pretty much how the incredibly innovative and inspirational Ōtākaro Orchard came about.

Suddenly our small community garden places – numbering thirty in our city currently – became significant in our lives; not only did they provide food, they provided a social network, a sense of wellbeing and order during testing times. They left that workshop determined to talk to others who might be of similar mind. As more people put their hands up, Chloe dared to hope her vision might become a reality. Chloe, who is now Co-ordinator of Ōtākaro Orchard, outlines all the facilities the Orchard will have on offer, apart from the edible garden and information centre/library. Even a year from now, I imagine people doing yoga in Ōtākaro, weaving flax, enjoying food, a busker or two. When I see that? ur Construction Programme not only introduces our students to construction and carpentry, it teaches different disciplines in trade areas, so they can make choices; be it working in fine furniture, joinery or construction. They leave here with the skills to forge a career.” Nigel’s students (comprising full-time Youth Guarantee students and part-time Canterbury Tertiary College students) have been constructing tool sheds as part of their programme, and Nigel, recognising they could be converted into huts, made a call to the Department of Conservation. “They were very interested,” says Nigel. Five student-built bench seats were added to the order, and it appears as if future projects for D.O.C. are highly likely. “Yes, a fantastic outcome,” agrees Nigel, as we inspect two sheds near to completion. The word ‘shed’ seems a misnomer to describe these snazzy little pine structures; suddenly the revered tin shed down the back of the garden seems embarrassingly naff! We view the interior of what will soon be a warden’s hut at Packhorse Saddle on Banks Peninsula. It feels solid, quaintly Kiwiana, and very cosy. Lucky warden! “Once the hut’s at Packhorse Saddle, we’ll take the students for a visit. They’ll see how important their work is, and feel proud. As their tutor, that’s my reward.”

love affair a
If you were to summarise what CoCA stands for to someone completely unfamiliar, where would you start? The Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA) is a free gallery for everyone, that shows new, modern and innovative works of art by contemporary artists. The gallery has had a long history in the city. It was originally the Canterbury Society of Arts, and it built an amazing gallery space in 1968 and renamed the organisation the Centre of Contemporary Art to present and represent art of its time. We curate four exhibitions a year – solo or group exhibitions – by local, national and international artists. We also have a public programme, which includes fun Saturday free workshops for kids, and ongoing series of talks, films, and music events which relate to the exhibitions.
Art, as a form of expression, a visual story, and a form of escapism, is a powerful medium. For almost 50 years, the Centre of Contemporary Art (or its predecessor the Canterbury Society of Arts) has been at the heart of giving inspiring and established artists a platform to romance the imagination of visitors to the space. Metropol talks to CoCA Director Paula Orrell about the centre’s evolution and what lies ahead.
To what extent do you think the city’s regeneration has offered more fertile soil to those wanting to plant their own start-up seed/fulfil their potential – specifically those in creative fields? It is an unexpected opportunity for change. Everything, literally, was thrown into disarray. The regeneration is a rebirth and an impetus for change, for people to do things they haven’t previously done, to have a go! It has given a voice to artists and also a community who wants to see change happen in the city. Christchurch has always been a creative place and it would be great to see some cheaper spaces for artists to work in the inner city, as used to happen. The freedom of being able to use the public spaces in the city has been an exciting new territory, especially with the transitional community like FESTA and Gap Filler. You’re a year into your time with CoCA – what’s been achieved and what lies ahead? There are so many things ahead of us – what gets me going is when new audiences tell us how interesting and exciting they find the work. I want to build an audience and bring more excellent work to them. Art is subjective. We know that not every exhibition will appeal to everyone. But one I believe that will is an exciting international exhibition opening in March. The artist is very well known and uses humour in drawing, sculpture and film. We’ve also planned some exciting group exhibitions exploring identity, and others giving a platform to Maori artists.

with contemporary art What would you consider to be some of the more unique challenges involved with leading such an organisation and how do you overcome these? The challenges are unique because we are a charity and have a public role, and contemporary art is not a tangible art form – it needs curators to interpret the work to ensure people get the most from the experience. Contemporary art deals with ideas and there is a lot of ‘research thinking’ that goes on in the process of making and developing the work. It is our job to help demystify the work and make the artist’s message clear. To your mind, what do you think are the most essential qualities to being a leader? Being mindful of our small team, their needs, and how we support each other. Also supporting the community that surrounds you is critical. I also have to stick my neck on the line a lot – to stand up for contemporary art and be the advocate and voice to ensure that art galleries continue to have a social value in a world that is increasingly corporate and commercial. Have there been any particular organisations across the world that have inspired CoCA or that it looks to emulate? I am inspired by lots of different art organisations and project spaces. It is a hard question as there are so many inspiring galleries in the world today. There are lots of powerful cultural venues that are really utilising the arts to help change society and inspire people to live and think differently. We live in such a complex world with increasing chaos that the arts are a powerful tool to change the world. As an art student, I was so inspired by the Musee des Arts in Paris. It was my first experience of a world-class contemporary art gallery and I was immersed in such powerful works of art that motivated me to become an artist and now a curator. Subsequently, I have been fortunate to work with some
CoCA DIRECTOR PAULA ORRELL
amazing galleries in varied sizes in the UK. There are several organisations, about the same size as CoCA, in towns and cities such as Liverpool or Manchester, where galleries are at the heart of regeneration and transformation of the city or place. The Institute of Contemporary Arts in London also inspired me. It is a historical radical space for contemporary artists and has pushed the boundaries to platform some of the most exciting artists of our time. What do we have to look forward to at CoCA in the coming months? Showing now is Precarious Nature, a group exhibition, which will be on until 19 February next year - we are open throughout the summer and only close on public holidays. It is an exhibition that responds to, and asks how humans are affecting an increasingly fragile global ecosystem. Key local and international artists of different generations feature, their work tackling issues such as the decline of the honeybee, deforestation, air pollution, and consumerism. What is the single best piece of advice you could offer to aspiring creatives? See, experience as much art as you can, but also engage in lots of different art forms and other talks and discussions about the world. Expose yourself to new ideas, because inspiration comes from many places!

OUT & ABOUT
BLONDE AMBITION hits the stage
The Court Theatre’s summer musical is always eagerly awaited. There’s great expectation about what delightful costumes, sets, dance numbers and acting will be on show each year. This year’s show Legally Blonde the Musical is sure to have audiences swept up with its energy, humming along to its catchy tunes and awestruck by the complex and technical set.
L
egally Blonde the Musical, based on the Amanda Brown novel and hit 2001 film of the same name, is a musical comedy that smashes stereotypes about women. Perky, blonde college student Elle Woods has her life all planned out, right down to the boyfriend she plans to marry. Those plans are turned upside down when her boyfriend dumps her for someone more ‘serious’, motivating Elle to enrol at Harvard Law School so she can prove she’s capable of much more than anyone thought. As Elle wins over her sceptical classmates she also becomes involved in a high-profile trial where her particular world view may prove the key to cracking the case. Artistic Director of The Court Theatre, Ross Gumbley, says, “The show’s got a wonderful, unpredictable sense of humour about it. It’s a little bit sexy, but what is really exciting is that at its heart it says that in this day and age, if you’re a feminist, you can still dress how you like. It demonstrates how we shouldn’t really judge books by their covers”. At the helm of this year’s summer blockbuster is Director, Stephen Robertson. “When you come along to Legally Blonde you will find a ridiculously youthful vibe which is, of course, unapologetically pink and an ‘OMG’ song and dance spectacular,” Stephen says. Legally Blonde the Musical is on at The Court from 26 November to 21 January.

he fresh, flirty colour palettes synonymous with summer have made glitter a compulsory addition to the style aesthetic for the season and as willing slaves to sparkle, we’re rejoicing in the prospect of the many possibilities. We’ve discovered what’s reigning supreme on this front - from top to toe – and we have your must-have wardrobe and beauty box additions sorted. One of the key sartorial rules to bear in mind when it comes to working a bit of glitter magic is that less is more. While they played an-all important role in our life through the 90s, the likes of Jem and the Holograms shouldn’t be our role model when embracing this visual. Shine on, darlings!

nette and Graeme Drewery have embellished North Canterbury’s original Meadery with vintage French-country charm. They extend a warm invite to wander the gardens and the historic homestead’s courtyard garlanded with old roses and shaded by magnificent established trees. Golden Retrievers Daisy and Flynn welcome visitors, as do the fluffy-plumaged chickens - which even have their own petite farmhouse with French shutters. The gift and clothing boutique in the original mead factory has one-off fashion pieces, from Italy and France, of finely woven linen, soft lace, chiffon, cotton and delicate knits. New shipments of flattering, feminine designer pieces regularly arrive in chic neutrals and pops of colour. An eclectic mix of old and new giftware offers something affordable for everyone this Christmas and includes Pre de Provence quad-milled shea-butter soaps, French Durance home-fragrance and exquisite Bianca Lorenne linen. The Jeanne d-Arc Living Magazine for sale showcases the Nordic take on French country design. The light, whitewashed, fresh shades interestingly mirror provincial French chic. Additional to imported treasures, Graeme’s carpentry skills up-cycle items such as dressing tables and shelves. Also appreciating the gnarled detail of an old farm post, for example, he gives it new life as part of a table. Anette completes a piece by cleverly recreating an authentic patina - drawing upon her love affair of the romance of a French antique. Visit The Old Meadery at 273 Plaskett Road, Fernside, www.theoldmeadery.co.nz, Facebook or email sales@theoldmeadery.co.nz. Phone 03 313 1366. Open Wednesday to Sunday.

After a number of “temporary” locations over the years since the earthquakes, Dr Philip Frost is delighted to be finally relocating Face Value Cosmetic Medical Clinic to a fabulous new home.

NEW ERA
B
uilt in 1891 as a private school for young ladies, the “Charlotte Jane” on the corner of Papanui Road and Webb Street, Merivale is a stunning heritage site which Face Value will share with the Champs Elysees Day Spa. “The building epitomises the elegance and grace of the Victorian era and provides us with the much needed space and opportunity to further grow our range of services,” says Dr Frost who will be joined at the new clinic by his wife.
Registered Nurse Shelley Frost will bring many years of experience as a national leader in general practice and primary care nursing to Face Value. A past Director of Nursing, Shelley’s presence will enable an increase in opening hours and in time provide clients with a greater range of services to complement Dr Frost’s acclaimed expertise in cosmetic medicine. “It’s time to take Face Value to the next stage in its development, providing
excellence in clinical care, now in a setting that is really quite unique and special.” Dr Frost looks forward to seeing his patients in his new premises and welcomes new clients. Call 388 8806 for your free, no obligation consultation.

Up-and-coming makeup artists can now learn the art of Special Effects at New Zealand’s first and only specialised school – KSFX – established by renowned Christchurch makeup artist, Kristen Stewart.
F
ollowing on from the success of her first makeup school, the Kristen Stewart School of Makeup (KSSM), Kristen saw a gap in the market for special effects makeup. “The concept of KSSM worked so well, and there are a lot of people who want to learn Special FX makeup rather than fashion and photographic, which is what I offer at my original school. My daughter is also really interested in Special FX, which is another reason I decided to provide this option, and it also caters more towards males than KSSM.” The Kristen Stewart School of Special FX Make-Up (KSFX) offers three intensive 12-week courses per year, with students earning an industry-recognised Special FX Diploma certificate on completion. The courses were developed in conjunction with Midge Holding, Minifies owner and highly experienced BBC trained makeup artist, who will remain as a mentor for the course and guest speaker for her specialist area of TV Makeup. In an ever-growing, constantly evolving industry, students will learn the latest techniques in sfx (cuts and bruises) airbrushing, prosthetics, and working with facial hair and wigs, as well as TV makeup. Classes are deliberately kept small to maximise the learning potential of students and to ensure there’s plenty of one-on-one focus from the tutor to student. KSFX ensures graduates are work-ready to the highest international standards. For more information or to apply, visit www.ksfx.co.nz

Allow your body to thrive There’s a warmth and friendliness to the welcome at Inalign Chiropractic and Health. That’s very much in keeping with its aim to be a clinic that is not clinical and to be a wellness centre that treats every patient as an individual.
I
At its heart the focus of chiropractic is to help people be as healthy and vibrant as they can be.
nalign Chiropractic and Health is a holistic practice with a mission to facilitate the best of chiropractic care and to support people to develop a wellness lifestyle. As Director Jude Moriarty says, “Wellness is an active, lifelong process of being aware of choices and making decisions towards a more balanced and fulfilling life. In other words, allowing your body to thrive”. Chiropractic is based on the knowledge that tension, misalignment or altered function of your spine may dramatically affect the function of your body in many different ways. While it is very effective for relieving symptoms such as back pain, headaches, or asthma, at its heart the focus of chiropractic is to help people be as healthy and vibrant as they can be. “Having a number of different services together in our clinic enables us to offer options to patients who come initially for a chiropractic consultation. We offer naturopathy, massage therapy, acupuncture, life coaching and nutritional advice. These pathways to symptomatic relief or good health may not have occurred to patients and we are delighted to be able to give them advice and offer great service.” Inalign Chiropractic and Health is located at 462 Tuam Street – phone 379 3370 – and at Shop 7/92 Rolleston Drive, Rolleston – phone 347 4799.

SKIN CANCER SIGNS OF
Skin Cancer
- Skin Cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand. - An estimated 20,000 people have new skin cancers each year. Because these cancers are on the skin, they are usually visible and relatively easy to detect in their early stages. - The sooner skin cancers are detected the simpler the treatment.
Melanoma
- It is the least common but the most serious form of skin cancer. - About 250 New Zealanders die from melanoma each year. - The first sign is a change in colour or size of a freckle or mole or the appearance of a new spot on the skin. - It may have flecks of brown, black, blue or red in it. - It may have an irregular edge and appears or changes over a period of a few weeks to months. - It is the most common cancer in 20-40 year olds and the risk of melanoma increases as we get older. - Melanoma develops in weeks or months; if it is diagnosed and treated early, the treatment is usually successful.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
- It is more common in people over 40. - It is often a raised, crusty, non-healing sore which often appears on hands, forearms, face or neck. - It can be dangerous if left untreated. If found early it is easily treated.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (Rodent Ulcer)
- Is the most common skin cancer (about three quarters of all skin cancers). - It is often a pale, red or pearly, smooth lump, usually on the face or neck. - It is less common in people under 40. - It is the least dangerous type of skin cancer.
The most important thing is to protect yourself from the sun during daylight saving months between 11am and 4pm. Remember to:
- Wear brimmed hats, protective clothing and SPF30+ broad spectrum sunscreens. - Avoid the sun and seek shade and watch for skin changes. - Early detection is important. You should check your skin every 3-6 months. Watch for spots which won’t heal, and freckles or moles which are changing. If you find these, it is important not to delay seeing your doctor.
Sun Spots
- Flat, red or sometimes brown, scaling spots. - A sign of sun damage to the skin. - A warning that you may be likely to develop skin cancer. - Common in fairer skinned people over 40 who have been in the sun a lot. - Usually found on parts of the body which have had many years of sun, such as the face and hands. - Some of the more benign effects of sun damage such as brown spots or broken vessels can be treated with our BBL Laser.
Preventing Skin Cancer

GENDER REVEAL PARTIES By Melinda Collins
Whether it’s your first or fourth, for many mums and mums to be, there is nothing more exciting than finding out whether your upcoming arrival is going to be a boy or a girl.
Y
et for many of us, finding out such exciting news in the sterility of a medical facility takes a little of the buzz out of this momentous occasion. So many parents are choosing to find out instead, surrounded by their nearest and dearest. There’s many ways to hold a gender reveal party, but how much more fun would it be for the parents to find out at the same time as their guests? To keep it a secret from everyone until the big moment, ask your doctor to write down the gender on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope to give to your most trusted person, who will set
up the reveal. The traditional gender reveal is the classic cake which spills its secrets only when you cut into it. But helium balloons in a box may be gaining on cake and cupcakes as the hottest gender announcement trend around. All you need is a big cardboard box and balloons in the right colour. You could announce the gender of your sweet bundle of love with a gender reveal piñata which comes packaged with pink or blue confetti or why not give gender reveal party poppers a go? Just count down and everyone sets their coloured confetti filled poppers off at once.

LET’S GO
GLAMPING! By Melinda Collins
Glamorous and camping are the two unlikely companions which make up one of the most popular portmanteaus of modern language – glamping. Because, although camping by its very definition involves the forgoing of creature comforts at the expense of the experience, glamping is about bringing the glamour back to this popular pastime.
G
lamping has been gaining in popularity for some time, since posh pioneers Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves tied the knot in a three-day celebration in 2012, where guests had to reside in one of 47 airconditioned tents erected at their Austin, Texas estate. Feather Down Farms in the UK is credited as being the pioneer of this phenomenon. And, although it’s not hard to be put off traditional tent holidays by the muddy camping fields of Glastonbury, the festival’s elite Camp Kerala – described by Vogue magazine as “unquestionably one of the most glamorous places to be in the UK” – has been growing in popularity over the past few years. Filled with Rajasthani furnishings and
duck-down duvets, the shikar tent will set you back a cool £8,000 for a weekend. So it seems, glamping is much more than a travel trend, and rather a magical mainstay - it’s no longer restricted to the rich and famous. Five-star camping has gone mainstream and now it’s even as close as our own Kiwi backyard. Backpack-free without a soggy sleeping bag in sight, there are glamping options across the country for all budgets. In the Catlins you can find Tussock
Country Glamping in unique Lotus Bell tents and custom dual en-suite trailers, offering the comfort of a hotel in some of New Zealand’s most stunning natural environments. Canopy Camping Escapes offer luxury canvas tents, fully set up at partner sites throughout New Zealand. The glamorous part? Hot water, decent facilities, comfy beds and, most importantly, warmth. Get glamping globally by sourcing your own secluded spot through the online Glamping Hub where you will find a wide range of glamourous options. So why not give glamping a go for your next holiday excursion, after all, whether you’re in a tent, yurt, tipi, airstream or treehouse, glamping is all about enjoying the best of both worlds and what better way to stay? ENRICHING THE
MIND, BODY & Internationally acclaimed yoga and meditation teacher Sarah Powers is bringing her unique practise all the way from the USA to Christchurch this weekend.
Soul
I
n the two-day workshop, Sarah will blend the soft and strong practises of yoga, with an intention of cultivating an inner atmosphere of ease and vitality – qualities essential for compassion and insight to grow. The event, organised by Flow Hot Yoga, will be held at the Te Hapua Halswell Centre on Saturday 3 December from 10am until 4pm, and Sunday 4 December, from 10am until 1pm. Sarah is the founder of Insight Yoga – a combination of traditional yoga, Buddhism, Taoism and Transpersonal Psychology, interweaved into an integral practice to discover and enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with an alignment-based slow flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, Iyengar teachings, and QI gong. The workshop is suitable for anyone with at least one year experience in yoga, with some understanding of the Yin practise, and a sincere interest in meditating. Sarah will give some meditation instruction as well as leave time to practise. Book at Flow Hot Yoga on 25 Mandeville Street, phone 348 8889 or visit www.flowhotyoga.co.nz for more information.

Way back in 1882, two boat builders from Lyttelton erected a large boat shed on the Avon River. It is unlikely they would have imagined the Antigua Boat Sheds still standing some 134 years later, or that boats would still be making their way up and down the same stretch of water.
A TRADITION
MADE TO LAST
T
his month, Mike and Sally Jones celebrate 30 years of being a part of this tradition. First purchased in 1978 by Sally’s parents, Maurice and Diane Phipps, Sally and Mike became involved in the family business in 1986. Under their hands a deck overlooking the river was added to the milk bar, with the milk bar in turn becoming a licensed café, The Boat Shed. From here they offer great food in an exceptional setting, open daily from 7am-5pm for breakfast and lunch, with all food made fresh onsite. Mike can be found by the river most days, in the café or next door where boats and bikes are available for hire, and Punting on the Avon is based. Whether behind the scenes or putting the finishing touches on their revamped deck complete with a new louvre roof, it is work he thrives on.
“It’s fantastic – it’s not really like work,” he says, the family business extending to their children who grew up helping out on the weekends, and their team of dedicated and long-standing staff. Find Antigua Boat Sheds at 2 Cambridge Terrace, with access also via the pedestrian footbridge from Oxford Terrace or visit www.boatsheds.co.nz and call 366 5885 for more information.

Much like their cousin quince, crab apples too are tart to the bite, but when cooked, their juice becomes a vintage rose pink with a wonderful fragrance and a tart aftertaste.
By Melinda Collins
When it comes to getting crafty in the kitchen, sometimes you just need some inspiration. Now as some old time faves like quince, crab apples and figs are once again growing in popularity, there’s even more options for your clever, culinary creations.
Q
FREEDOM FURNITURE
uince, in its raw state, is so hard, sour and astringent that in Turkey - the world’s largest quince producer – the saying “to eat the quince” is slang for “to get into serious trouble”. But in our corner of the South Pacific, we have a little habit of taking things and improving them, with New Zealand firm Rutherford Meyer transforming quince into a popular fruit paste which is being exported around the world, while mega foodie Annabel Langbein sings the praises of the humble fruit sharing quince jelly and paste recipes of her own. Much like their cousin quince, crab apples too are tart to the bite, but when cooked, their juice becomes a vintage rose pink with a wonderful fragrance and a tart aftertaste. The small sized apples are perfect for preserving because of their high pectin levels and, although you’re unlikely to find them
in the produce aisle of your local supermarket, you can pick up plenty on a local foraging expedition. As a jam or jelly, they make a wonderful addition to your morning toast, even better on a rich, buttery croissant or as a glaze for a wild duck, according to foodie extraordinaire Jonny Schwass who has a crab apple jelly recipe online. Although the fig tree was one of the first to be cultivated, until recently it was difficult to buy figs locally. Even despite their increasing popularity, they’re most likely to be found in farmers’ markets or greengrocers. Yet you’ll increasingly find them at restaurants, tucked into a fancy salad with rocket leaves, lemon juice, olive oil and slices of prosciutto,; transformed into a fruit paste to be served with mozzarella, a rich blue such as gorgonzola or a goat’s cheese, or even simply poached in sugar syrup with a vanilla bean to be served warm with cream or ice-cream.
The Secret Garden

Celebration
A TRIPLE
There was a good reason to celebrate at Harrington’s Breweries in November - they opened their new bottling line, celebrated 25 years of brewing excellence in Canterbury and founder John Harrington turned 75.
T
he occasion was marked by a celebration at their Wigram site, and the introduction of a new bottling line imported from Italy, which will almost treble their bottling capacity from 2500 bottles per hour to 7500! “Twenty years ago our most popular beer was a four percent commercial style draft beer, now it’s a Rogue Hop Pilsner. People’s tastes have changed a lot over the years - beer trends are constantly evolving,” says Director Carl Harrington, the son of John Harrington. Since its inception in 1991, the family business has introduced numerous new products including craft beers, RTDs and ciders, as well as specialty beers, such as
A limited release spiced ale, will be released to the public in January with a portion of the proceeds going to the City Mission. SobeRing Thought, a 1 percent (Alcohol By Volume) stout commissioned for the first Lord of the Rings movie, which has recently been released again. Fellow Director and Carl’s wife, Trudy Harrington, said other new specialties include the Rogue Hop Deluxe brewed especially for their 25th anniversary, with
25 percent more hops and 25 percent more Alcohol By Volume, and a seasonal release Black IPA. A limited release spiced ale, Special Reserve Collaboration with Cryer Malt (who are also celebrating 25 years in the industry), was brewed the day before the Harrington’s birthday celebrations and will be released to the public in January with a portion of the proceeds going to the City Mission. This is genuinely a beer brewed for the people.

Established in 1999 by Tony Chin and Bernard Wong, the iconic restaurant has a loyal following of diners who love the fresh, exquisite cuisine, along with the exciting and entertaining Teppan Yaki experience. It’s all about connecting with the chef and engaging with the cooking process, says
Bernard. “Diners love watching their dishes being cooked in front of them. And our food is so good because we keep things fresh and simple, letting the ingredients speak for themselves – minimum fuss, with maximum flavour. Nothing is pre-made and we cook everything from fresh, so it’s easy to cook to people’s tastes or dietary requirements.” The menu offers both traditional and contemporary-style Japanese cuisine, and a separate gluten-free menu is also available. @Tony’s Teppan Yaki Japanese Restaurant is located at 85 Riccarton Road/ phone 341 6608 and 2 Waterman Place/ phone 348 5644. I scream, you scream... By Kate Pierson
You’d be forgiven for thinking we have a slight infatuation with ice-cream at Metropol. We do.
F
ollowing on from our very own ice-cream recipe in 3 November, we’re still finding ways to get our fix and celebrate this timeless innovation. The season certainly calls for it! We’ve put together some of the coolest ice-cream themed utensils that will, quite frankly, melt your heart. We’ve got the scoop! See what we did there?
1 2 3
Dig deep: we’re sure, like us, you find it difficult to exercise restraint when it comes to serving size, so at least ensure you go the extra mile with the indulgence factor and dig deep into the tub with this quirky spoon.
Get in shape: no, don’t despair, this is the fun kind of getting in shape! The one that allows you to make and mould your own ice-cream themed popsicle concoctions.
Coolest kid on the block: because we’re rebels with a guilty pleasure cause and we play by our own rules, we’ve gone beyond the realms of ice-cream and ventured into iceblock territory. After all, they’re just as much a temptation on those sweltering afternoons. Perfect the art of a great ice-block with this magic mould. PRODUCTS FROM SUNNYLIFE

adventure for tastebuds
Beautiful food is as much about feeling as it is about flavour. That’s certainly the sentiment encapsulated by Fusion at the Asiatique.
B
orn from the inspiring ambition and prowess of Jackie Hendricks, culinary connoisseur, the highly regarded restaurant pays homage to authentic Asian eats and is revolutionising the concept of service. “My food is an expression of who I am and what I stand for which is honest food that my teachers and mentors will be proud of,” Jackie explains. “I have always been told ‘do not serve your customers what you would not feed your family’. I do not compromise on flavours and quality nor would I bulk a dish up with vegetables to camouflage it.” Enjoying intimacy and a personalised experience, guests at Fusion at the Asiatique are treated as friends, free to relax and socialise against a backdrop of thoughtful décor, or they can have the
delicious fare in the comfort of their own home. “We like to be able to offer gourmet take outs as part of our offering.” Such is the contagious nature of Jackie’s enthusiasm and adventurous nature with food; she has found her skills being called for in other areas. Her creative streak created “Shiok” – a tribute to the Malaysian/Singaporean expression that

speaks to the euphoric relief one gets after enjoying a delicious bite they have been craving. Shiok is Jackie’s culinary identity at major food fairs including the Christchurch and Auckland Night Noodle Markets – the latter is on from 30 November – 4 December with 200,000+ expected. Jackie is also working on a brand new product that is almost at launch stage – an Asian flavour infused sausage that will no doubt delight palates. Keep an eye on the Fusion at the Asiatique’s Facebook page for details on all of the above as well as the famous cooking classes that have rocketed Jackie’s talents to new heights. The terrace of the restaurant is the perfect place to while away the summer hours. It’s sunny and sheltered from the wind and a wonderful vantage point from which to watch the world go by. “We’re open over most of the holiday period,” says owner and chef Rod Parkinson. “We’ll take a break only on 25 and 26 December and 1 January so we’d love people to take advantage of their leisure time at our great location after their Christmas and New Year celebrations.” It’s not only the location that makes Protocol Public House a delightful place to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family. Chef Rod’s food is also a huge drawcard, especially the signature tapas menu. “We’ve recently introduced a new menu for the summer, with those lighter flavours people associate with alfresco dining.”
Rod’s superb contemporary food based on classic cooking techniques covers the range from brunch and lunch to dinner. There’s also a mouth watering pizza menu for another level of choice and the 2 for 1 pizza special on Tuesdays is extremely popular and great value. The taste of success There is very little Murray Macarthy, owner of Asian Garden Cooking School, hasn’t done. Today Murray’s culinary empire is world class – he counts five different brands across five New Zealand cities – that’s 14 restaurants – as part of his portfolio. Dynamic Asian food and flavours are characterised by authenticity in all of these restaurants, and thanks to Murray’s latest venture, amateur and aspiring kitchen connoisseurs can learn the tools of the trade. Located in a quiet cul-de-sac, just a short drive from Christchurch central and only minutes from the airport, the Asian Garden Cooking School is a breeding ground for creativity. The manifestation of vertical integration at its finest, guests to the school revel in the opportunity to pick their own herbs and garnish (coriander, garlic, Vietnamese mint, lime leaf - the list goes on) and introduce this fresh product into a memorable meal with the guidance of internationally qualified chefs and with the company of

DO put all your eggs in one basket: ignore the age old adage, because with accents like this, you most certainly want to put your eggs in such a glamorous basket.

Where ec0-friendly
function meets award winning architectural form Since its inception Bob Burnett Architecture has established a reputation for award-winning, high performance hill homes and environmental design. Bob’s own epic home on the Port Hills was a testing bed for innovative sustainability and design ideas that were subsequently incorporated in future designs.
M
ost designs are a fusion of ideas from the two directors Bob Burnett and Shizuka Yasui which express influence from both Japanese and New Zealand Architecture. When we consider Japanese architecture, we think tranquillity, harmony, natural materials, efficiency and smart detailing. They are the masters of tight spaces, creating the illusion of spaciousness while working with a compact footprint. The practice’s core philosophies
include design for comfort, functionality and delight to provide the best possible living experience; optimizing building performance within the available budget; providing value for money when considering upfront costs, ongoing costs and return investment. It has an affinity for solar and passive house principles and aims to encourage quality over quantity with the belief that if you can master a cleverly designed compact home, then a big budget home is a cinch.
Following the earthquake Bob instigated Quakestar, a rating system for a building’s performance in earthquakes and has also been supportive of Homestar, a 1 to 10 rating tool for energy, health, comfort and environmental attributes. Bob is a recognised industry spokesperson, who has championed better building standards, some of which are demonstrated in the country’s first 10 Homestar home.

The movement’s focus is on providing the open source sharing of innovative design ideas, technologies and building techniques; connecting experts and leaders in the industry with each other and the wider community. Founded by Bob and Martin Reilly, SUPERHOME movement is a not-for-profit industry group creating a paradigm shift
for home owners, builders and designers, triggering behavioural change in decision making. At the launch of the SUPERHOME movement and the first 10 Homestar home approximately a year ago, Lianne Dalziel, Mayor of Christchurch, said it was exactly what the Christchurch rebuild needs. The SUPERHOME movement’s activities have led to bigger projects with Bob being engaged as an advisor, then designer, on City Council social housing
with several private developers, initiating large multi-unit Eco Village developments with minimum Homestar ratings of 6 and 7 stars. These will be the largest clusters of Homestar 6 and above homes in the country. Sponsored by the Christchurch City Council and Build Back Smarter, the Exemplar Homes Tour opened up seven houses by various SUPERHOME movement participant companies for the public to view during the weekends of May. Word of mouth and social media created a ground swell of awareness with approximately 3000 people visiting these Exemplar Homes. The public were able to enjoy and experience these homes first-hand and also be introduced to the techniques required to achieve a warmer, dryer and healthier home. The interest has been phenomenal with 50 companies now participating in Christchurch, while September 2016 saw the successful launch of the movement in Auckland and Wellington. The Exemplar Homes Tour is already geared up for May 2017 in Christchurch with other cities to be confirmed.

The best way to get your pool party started this summer is with some seasonal fundamentals that will help you make a stylish splash. Here’s a list of our very own décor desires:

A cushy summer: for the days where your mission is to remain horizontal by the pool, you’ll be thankful for the presence of pillows that offer some practical perfection to your summer soirees. Rock them indoors or out. Feeling wrapped: why not combine luxury with necessity? A dip in the pool should always be accompanied by getting wrapped up in your favourite towel. Light up your life: lanterns will bring that special glow to your pool party, offering an economic alternative to fixed electrics. Pick pretty pots: vegetation is a veritable option for adding a touch of glam to your oasis. Potted plants add personality. What floats your boat: a pool party can never reach its full potential without the mandatory toys involved.

Everyone who touched the design, or was involved in its construction was working towards the same vision, which dovetailed into the success of the build. to end: bringing their own tastes, flavours and preferences to the table. Flavours and ideas which were intrinsically aligned with ours, ensuring every decision was informed by the same aspirational aim. The initial ‘rule’ set in place, was that everything was to be timber. It became a narrative that we could all connect with, embrace and understand. During the design, engineering, and construction processes, this narrative formed the basis for a collaborative, team project. Right down to the furnishings and finer details, everything was derived from this ‘rule’. It was the perfect recipe. Everyone who
touched the design, or was involved in its construction was working towards the same vision, which dovetailed into the success of the build. So why can’t we achieve this every time? In the post-quake environment, the design sector has been placed under immense pressure to get onto the next project. As architects, we draw inspiration from the uniqueness of the site and our clients’ values, needs and requirements. Influenced by current fashions and techniques, these ideas are then aligned with innovative design concepts. However, with the next project always there on your heels, these design concepts are explored through a series of projects rather than being simply focused on one. Pre-quake we would often take contemporary design concepts and experiment with them in different ways. From design to design we would test and play with theories, creating multiple designs centered around one concept over three to four years, each with unique and varied results. Now, however, we no longer have the luxury of time to spend exploring these theories. Although our designs continue to be bespoke and original, the theories behind them have gone from being tested over years, to months. This is not to say that we aren’t diligent
with creating solutions unique to our clients and their site, it’s simply that there is no letting the pen get cold between designs. Perhaps what made this particular project stand out was that the nucleus of the design was central only to this one house. The intense and unwavering dedication to timber was a unique requirement, which achieved not only the clients’ needs, but established a warmth and relatability that translated beyond the three dimensional structure. Without intending to, the property has perhaps identified a style of architecture and a use of materials that we can call our own. So much of the architecture we see now is nouveau modernism in style, devoid of detail and colour, almost clinical in its final form. And while this home also falls into this architectural style, the use of natural materials adds a distinct Kiwi flavour to it. There are other aspects of the home which captivate: single level, a seamless transition between inside and out, and large, open living spaces. It offers a snapshot into how we, as Kiwis, want to live and perhaps forges a step forward in our quest to uncover our own, uniquelykiwi, style of architecture. www.caarc.co.nz

wooden flooring - a responsible choice When it comes to choosing flooring for our homes and workplaces, we want something durable, beautiful and natural yet fashionable, and for many of us, that means wood.
M
etro Floor in Sydenham are New Zealand’s only stockists of Listone Giordano’s striking range of premium hardwood flooring. Their products redefine design boundaries, taking traditional parquet flooring to a whole new level and combining classic craftsmanship with progressive technology. Metro Floor’s interior design consultants will work with clients to help them choose between the many styles, colours, textures and surface treatments that will result in a stunning finish for years to come. All products used during the manufacture of Listone Giordano floors are ecological, non-toxic and odourless, making them child-friendly. The choice of finishes includes solvent-free varnish in satin or natural matte, water-based finishes that protect the natural wood while retaining the natural appearance and colour of an untreated surface, and natural oils-based finishes. The antibacterial Crystalcare system is totally safe and designed to eliminate some of the most dangerous bacteria for human health. It is ideal to use for modern radiant underfloor heating systems, providing thermal efficiency as heat is
diffused throughout the home. That means a product that is respectful of your home and family, and is also respectful of the environment. Many of us don’t know where the timber we use comes from, but Metro Floor does. Listone Giordano believes in responsible and sustainable forestry and checks the origins of all the raw materials they use. Their French oak is taken from a forest in Burgundy where trees are cut down only when they are dying, often as old as 180 years. Canadian maple, teak, cherry and American walnut are also available, all with the same philosophy of eco-sustainability. There are three indoor ranges to choose from. The Classica collection takes classic wooden flooring then gives customers a choice of colour, finish and installation pattern, echoing the traditions of European wooden flooring throughout the centuries; the Atelier collection
harks back to traditional Italian craftsmanship, blending it with ultramodern technology and showcases the unique grain of oak wood so each pieces is different from the others; and the Natural Genius collection, brings contemporary design to flooring, revolutionising the material and its use in both modern and older properties. The same standards of style and durability are applied to their outdoor products, suitable for a domestic or a commercial space. They use special, natural treatments giving them weatherproof characteristics making them ideal for outdoor use and have an organic durability of 25 years. Advanced technology means the pieces clip tightly together with no need for nails. Metro Floor’s team of consultants, quantity surveyors and project managers will ensure that you select the design and products that are perfect for your needs. Visit www.metrofloor.co.nz and check out their brand new website, or call in to see them at 114 Montreal Street to find out more about the Listone Giordano range. Metropol December 1, 2016 87

M
y thoughts on Skoda take me back to the 1980s with the boxy eastern European “tank” that most people made fun of. Ohhh how you’ve matured. What used to be an ugly duckling has become an elegant swan.
SKODA... living up to the hype... Chef designer, Jozef Kaban says, “Being our flagship, the Superb is a trailblazer for the future of our company, so we dug into our 120-year history and were inspired by past Skodas that were design pioneers of their time.” The version I drove was 110kW diesel, 1.9cc, TDi (Turbocharged direct injection) with a price point at $43,000. Cutting to the chase, it was a lot of bang for buck. I loved how they metal-folded the bonnet to keep the profile lines smooth and seamless; I loved the umbrella storage built into the door frame; I loved
the rear detachable boot light that can be used as a torch in emergencies. There was a lot of love and storage for Africa; I was able to fit all my open home signs, the kids gear and the plethora of junk that builds up in a car over the week. It was comfortable to drive and the sill lighting was a nice little touch. I’ve seen this in Mercedes, but at this price point it is just one of the small details that add up to this being a good buy. The power wasn’t massive, but in the end, it didn’t matter a hell of a lot, I enjoyed the ride. The dash was refined
Me

and easy enough to navigate when it came to integrating with the iPhone. Surround sensors and rear view camera are pretty stock standard, but it was all very easy and refined. Combine that with a series of driver assists in the vehicle and it ticks your boxes on safety features. As one of this year’s top 10 cars, I was looking for faults. Quite the opposite; I discovered great design integrated with a stable automotive platform for smooth driving. Gone are the ghosts of Skoda past. In its place is a modern vehicle with a touch of elegance and driving charm. It’s worth looking at to make up your own mind, but I can see why it’s in the top 10.

Southern Classic The Mike Pero
When it comes to great motorcycle events in Canterbury, it doesn’t get much better than the Southern Classic, Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December.
T
he CAMS vs NZCMRR Challenge Cup and a GP Bike Feature Race are just two of the pedal to the metal showdowns with Bike legends, Kevin “Magoo” Magee riding the extremely rare, Yamaha YZR 500 and Graeme “Coz” Crosby riding the Suzuki RGB 500 Grand Prix bike owned and built by another Kiwi bike legend, Stu Avant. There’s going to be a lot of action down at the Levels Race Track in Timaru that weekend. With a 2.4 kilometre track, Levels is going to have some great riding - classic motorcycles include models as early as 1920 vintage through to 1996, and a variety of these machines will compete in front of the South Canterbury crowd, tickling the taste buds of any motorcycle enthusiast.
It’s designed for fun with a chance to meet the riders at the clubrooms on the Friday night with a BBQ and even an international book launch on the Saturday night just to make the event that so much more attractive. Even if you can’t get yourself down to Timaru for the weekend, it’s great that motorcycling in Canterbury has such a great event to hang its hat on. The rare all-rounder
By Nicholas Henare
I’m not a construction guy or a builder, but I can see what Mazda was doing when it created the Mazda BT 50.
I
t’s a 3.2L, 147kW, 470Nm 4-wheel drive; it’s got torque and power and simplicity; it’s a solid build and has enough room and power to take on pretty much everything you throw at it. High off the ground with its beefy suspension, I can see that it would be good in challenging farm situations, and as an entry level vehicle with an affordable servicing package, it would be a good allrounder. Finding the USB point in the glove compartment required a bit of hide and seek, but once discovered, navigating the dash technology was simple. Even though it’s a work vehicle, and it’s not meant to be a play toy, the Mazda BT 50 is a good, fun vehicle. It handles corners well and has the
power to keep me entertained. I navigated through city traffic well, but I hankered to take it off road. I felt it was more like an SUV than a ute; a lot of utility vehicles are moving this way these days. Manufacturers are realising that
just because it’s a work vehicle, it doesn’t mean it can’t be comfortable. It’s missing some finer points, but then it’s not meant to be a luxury car. From $35,295 plus on road costs, it’s a great complement to any fleet vehicle.

CELEBRITY STATUS By Nicholas Henare
T
I guess celebrity vehicles are a top investment these days with a pre-owned Lamborghini Miura recently selling for an amazing £909,000 ($1,599,000).
he 1971 Lamborghini Miura, first owned by rock legend Sir Rod Stewart, was recently sold through an auction by international auctioneers Coys at its first Classic & Sports Car Show sale at London’s Alexandra Palace. The Miura took centre stage on Saturday 29 October and became the most valuable car to sell at the auction. This P400S model had been the subject of a £100,000 ($176,000) restoration and upgrade to SV specification. A 1972 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS, once owned by none other than U2 drummer Adam Clayton, set a world-record for a Ghibli sold at auction at £303,000 ($533,000). This car was one of only eight right-hand drive examples.
Other important lots sold included an original right hand drive 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GT E Series, with coachwork by Scaglietti and design by Pininfarina, which went for $658,240 and a 1977 Ferrari 512 BB that featured at the 1977 London Motor Show, sold for $396,000. Chris Routledge, CEO of Coys, said, “The auction was exceptional and clearly shows that the historic motor car market is strong and alive with a world-record price for a Maserati Ghibli, a fabulous result for a 246 Dino and a very encouraging price achieved for the Rod Stewart Miura.” Now all I need to do is become a celebrity and see what I can get for my old Morris Minor 800, 1953, side valve!

SUV A quality vehicle that encompasses all the needs of a weekend warrior and his whanau.
I’ve had a run of utes (utility vehicles for work) that pretend to be SUVs (sport utility vehicles); in other words vehicles for work that disguise themselves as vehicles for play.
W
ell the Holden Trailblazer is a REAL SUV. A quality vehicle that encompasses all the needs of a weekend warrior and his whanau. The tagline is “make every day an adventure”. Well, if driving to Hanmer with all the kids and all the gear required for a Show Weekend without stressful driving is what you’re looking for, you’ve met your match with this seven seater. With three tonnes of pulling power you
can tow the caravan with ease and a boot load of safety features will keep you on the straight and narrow too - 7 airbags, FCA (forward collision alert), LDW (Lane Departure Warning) and a heap of other acronyms to keep you safe. Seventeen inch alloys, 6 speed automatic, LED daytime running lamps; so many features and not enough space to write! It boasts Holden MyLink infotainment for all you iPhone users (sorry
android-ites), which provides seamless interaction with your device so that you and yours can listen and call with the same ease as you use your phone. The numbers say it all: 2.8 Litre diesel and 147 kW with 500 Nm - power meets style with this vehicle. It’s an aroundtown and take the boat to Akaroa type of vehicle with enough power to meet all your family requirements and not feel like you’re struggling to get there. The comfortable cabin makes for a relaxing drive and it’s a pleasure to relax and have enough room for everyone to enjoy. My family certainly did.

ith more than 200 vehicles in stock, the European range is diverse for the discerning buyer. As I wandered the yard, I could spot many bona fide and exclusive automotive dreams; Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren the list goes on. Mixed into the range were the staples of European automotive driving in New Zealand including Audi, BMW, VW and Range Rovers. Yes, the specialty cars are great highlights, but there’s a European car for everyone at the site based in the accessible locale of 511 Blenheim Road. With the knowledge, experience and passion wielded by the team members, it’s no surprise they live and breathe good European vehicles. The business’ direct importing shows in the quality of vehicles and the choice. Director Niki Mills says, “We will willingly source specific vehicles for our clients to ensure they can have the car they always wanted.” Exciting stock is arriving all the time and you can see that from what’s on the yard, but a great deal of business is also conducted via the internet. Just browse through www.christchurcheuropean.co.nz to see the comprehensive range available. With the ability to provide vehicles across the country, you can rely on a consistent standard of service to acquire the right European vehicle. Christchurch European, the name says it all; elegant and stylish vehicles in Christchurch.

Refined quality, Remarkable position
Subtle luxury forms the cornerstone of the design aesthetic for this superb home. No expense has been spared in the pursuit of a unique property – one which takes full advantage of its incredible position whilst providing a warm, welcoming environment and simultaneously showcasing a refined style with real personality. Positioned for full sun in Old Frankton, the alpine styling of the exterior draws upon its surroundings for inspiration. Stepping inside, the semi-industrial bespoke staircase creates instant atmosphere, its steel structure a real masterpiece and Rimu treads a nod to history, being sourced from the original home on the site. The Rimu features are reflected in the bar leaner of the sleek and expansive kitchen, complete with granite benchtop, ample storage and inclusive appliances. Covering 290sqm, the interior encompasses four bedrooms across two levels, along with two living spaces. The upper level rooms have huge walls of glass emblazoned with incredible outlooks reaching along Lake Wakatipu all the way to Mt Nicholas. Striking honed blockwork elements run throughout the home tying the design together, and are continued in the block and timber fence around the broad garden and deck. Truly clever in its composition, the home introduces borrowed light in unexpected ways – skylights and corner windows bring in the best of Queenstown’s mountain outlooks along with plenty of sunshine. Completed in 2015, this builder’s own home represents a rare opportunity to purchase in one of the area’s most sought-after locations. QR-CODE 59 McBride Street, Frankton
