“Don’t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human” – Tony Robbins
I
t seems everywhere we look, there’s someone telling us how to ‘be’. Aware of this modern day challenge, Robyn Okrant devoted 2008 to adhering to all of Oprah’s suggestions on how to ‘live your best life’. She watched every episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, read every ‘O’ magazine cover to cover and referred regularly to www.oprah. com for an entire year to see if her life would improve if she did everything the talk show queen told her to do. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. However, the experiment wasn’t completely in vain, with a pretty inspiring revelation resulting at the end of it: “It is futile and exhausting for me to shape my life to meet anyone else’s standards. And I know there is a hazardous divide between being inspired by others and being dependent on their guidance and approval…. I think we can all give up hunting for the elusive path that will lead to ‘Best Lives’. I think the very idea of attaining our ‘Best Lives’ is a fairy tale that keeps us from being satisfied with our ‘Real Lives’.” So while we’re all familiar with the concept of FOMO or fear of missing out, there’s a new term that has caught our attention – JOMO or ABC AUDITED joy of missing out. The antithesis of FOMO, it captures the idea of slowing down, switching off and living in the moment. That sounds pretty good to us. After all, as Tony Robbins once said, “perfection is the lowest standard in the world because if you’re trying to be perfect, you know you can’t be. So what you really have is a standard you can never achieve.AUDITED “You want to be outstanding, not perfect.”

At Total Realty we understand the importance of having a highly experienced team on the ground and full time Admin and Management team providing marketing and customer support. We have built a stream-lined business that allows us to list homes to a consistently high standard while also still passing significant savings on to our homeowners. You will be given the opportunity to rate our service after the sale. Here’s what a recent client had to say: “Total Realty contacted me within 15 minutes of emailing through an enquiry. Immediately I got the sense that the agent I was dealing with (Nigel Maisey) was experienced, professional and would be supportive as this was our first time selling a house. We were recommended Total Realty by our mortgage broker. The 1% commission was a huge advantage too. It was an excellent experience with Total Realty, I can’t believe how stress-free, professional and quick the whole process was. Our house was under offer after the first open home.”

resented by Neptune Entertainment and The Breeze, the four-date tour will celebrate the release of his forthcoming album Shine a Light and follows his visit to Kiwi shores earlier this year, when tens of thousands of Kiwis jumped at the opportunity to see the Canadian icon live. This time around Adams will play to crowds and cities he didn’t visit earlier this year, including Spark Arena in Auckland on March 12 and TSB Bank Arena in Wellington on 14 March. His tour will also take in the South Island, with shows in Nelson at Trafalgar Park on 16 March and Hagley Park in Christchurch on 17 March. One of the most highly-acclaimed singer/songwriters, Adams is known for hit singles ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’, ‘Summer Of ’69’ and his Rod Stewart and Sting collaboration ‘All for Love’. The Grammy-winning artist has seen success from a string of number ones in over 40 countries and has sold in excess of 65 million records worldwide. His thirst for performing and his unique take on live concerts have established him as one of the world’s best rock singers. Thousands of New Zealanders got the chance to see Adams live in action earlier this year, with his shows receiving critical acclaim. “Bryan Adams kicked off his Get Up! Tour in absolutely tip-top style… We’ve sung our hearts out, clapped our hands and waved our phone lights in gleeful revelry, and bounced our way through a solid two-hour set of pure, simple, honest pop-rock delivered with absolute class,” Ambient Light described of the earlier tour. On his upcoming tour, Adams will be joined for the South Island shows only by special guests Dave Dobbyn and The Jordan Luck Band. Both legendary Kiwi acts in their own right, Dobbyn started his career in Th’ Dudes and DD Smash, before going solo and releasing hit after hit, including ‘You Oughta Be In Love’, ‘Slice of Heaven’, ‘Loyal’ and ‘Welcome Home’. Meanwhile Jordan Luck was the lead singer and songwriter for The Exponents for several decades, with countless hits to his name, including ‘Why Does Love Do This To Me’, ‘Who Loves Who The Most’, ‘Victoria’ and ‘Whatever Happened To Tracey’. The Jordan Luck Band will be playing all of the classic hits from The Exponents on this tour. Recipe for suc Manu Feildel has won hearts as the resident Frenchman on My Kitchen Rules for the past eight years. It was a recipe for success; the two beloved chefs, many years of experience under their culinary belts and the competitive streak that has given us an insatiable appetite for cooking shows. Then of course, there’s that suave French accent.
8 December 06, 2018 Metropol
How did you get to be where you are now? I moved to London when I was 18 with £300 in my pocket and no English and stayed in London for eight years, hated the weather and moved to Australia when I was 26 and got recognised in the industry. How do you deal with being a celebrity? I said hello to about 28 people coming in here! It’s part of the job, most of the time it’s ok but sometimes you just want to be left alone, when I’m with my family. What’s your go to food when you’re not cooking? My wife is an amazing cook, Chinese, Malaysian, Sri Lankan. Yesterday I was in Melbourne and she called me and said, ‘please don’t eat anything on the plane, I’m cooking for you’. I love her and love her cooking.
ccess By Nicholas Henare
In the city as part of his involvement in creating the gourmet menu for the new Hoyts Lux, part of the EntX development, Manu sat down with our very own Nicholas Henare for an exclusive one on one meeting with the suave star himself dishing the dirt on everything from his start in France at the ripe age of 15, to dealing with celebrity-dom and his love for the woman by his side.
When you cook for your family, is there anything you cook that they they don’t like? My young daughter is a little fussy but my older son was very picky between 10 and 12, in fact he was a little s**t and wouldn’t eat anything but now he eats EVERYTHING because he’s a rugby player. Do you ever eat McDonalds or KFC? 3am in the morning and I’ve been out for a big night, I put a hat on and use a German accent… no, no, no, very rarely do I eat that type of food. Hoyts Lux is amazing, how did that come about? Hoyts wanted to ring something different on the food aspect. The original menu was the same as everywhere else, so I thought I’d just jazz it up a bit. It’s been great to work with the team at Hoyts.
What’s your pick on the Hoyts Lux menu? Try the duck bao, pulled pork pizza, the chicken burger is also very good. Duck is a luxury product, something very special and that’s what Hoyts Lux is, something special. What’s your advice to someone who wants to start in the restaurant business? Don’t do it! (insert loud French laugh here). No, but really, it’s a small percentage of people who are successful and it’s very, very hard work. Long hours and commitment is what’s needed to make it. How much control did you have over the Lux menu? About 70 percent – they pretty much gave me free reign to do what I wanted so you really do get what my ideas are when eating at Lux. MKR? What’s happening? Season 10 is being filmed at the moment. It’s going to be a cracking season with some great guests. There’s a bit of bitchiness, but here in New Zealand we’re a bit more tame. I play the good cop and don’t try to offend anyone’s cooking too much and try to explain how they can improve and what they could do to make it better, so they don’t cook any… ‘merde’. How do you keep motivated? I’ve got a great job that’s different every day. I never get bored. I got to jump on a plane and come and meet you and all the people in New Zealand. Do you still cook in restaurants anymore? No, I miss that immensely, but my life has changed. Do you have favourite restaurant in New Zealand? You would love it Nick, a modern Indian restaurant in Auckland called Cassia, I love it! Manu is everything you see on television; suave, sophisticated and a bloody great conversationalist. Now I could do the hard sell on the food at Hoyts Lux but I don’t need to, Manu created it and seriously, it’s fantastic. Would you expect anything else? Metropol December 06, 2018 9

What motivated you to become a chef? I was crap at school, I was the class clown. My mother said, ‘I don’t know what to do with you, your dad owns a restaurant, I think you should go and work with your dad’. I just loved the restaurant, I could eat and cook and hang out with girls. I fell in love straight away with the restaurant.

Montgomery and Phillip Sunderland are dedicated ambassadors for the quality denim brand and strong advocates for locally made products. A tagline, ‘Always
Aotearoa’ perfectly captures the sentiment bestowed at the very heart of the business. “We are in the unique position of being New Zealand’s only denim brand made
taking their apparel to a larger market outside of Canterbury and New Zealand. “The most difficult part for us is finding stores that suit our brand values. We will be hitting the road to get our name (and story) out there.” While Dual’s products are popular with all ages, Phillip says its biggest supporters are those who are not interested in mass-produced items and wish to support New Zealand made products. Nobody knows that more than Dual Designer Gina Lee. “Everyone here is like a family. We help each other out and I love working alongside the staff in the factory. “Producing a pair of jeans takes team work and takes time. Each garment that leaves here has had many people working on it, helping construct it.” Even though the margins are small, according to Phillip, Dual won’t compromise on quality or its ethos. “If people actually saw where some of New Zealand’s top designers have their brands made, they wouldn’t buy them. “Ours is a story that is local – an authentic New Zealand story.” For further information, email hello@dual.co.nz, phone 03 925 9786 or pop into the retail shop next to Little High Eatery.

T
his is the opportunity of a lifetime for 15-23 year olds to win a 100k business start-up package. The Dream, Believe, Succeed Foundation was launched in 2018. It was established to give business-driven youth the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial spirit by providing a funding start up, together with a service and mentoring package to commence their own business or grow their existing business with the goal of becoming a successful business person. Last year’s contest winner, Oliver Hunt, has gone on to launch Medsalv, a single use medical device reprocessing business that saves costs for both the healthcare system and the environment. Dream, Believe, Succeed was founded by Steve Brooks, who began
his first business at just 12 years of age. At 14 he qualified as New Zealand’s youngest real estate agent and at 16 he purchased his first rental property. Steve’s goal was to be a millionaire by 21; he achieved this at 19. Steve had always determined that once he reached his goal, he would start an award to inspire young entrepreneurs; something that was not available to him when he was starting out. Contest entries close December 16. Finalists will be announced on December 21, and then they present their business plan in the Dragon’s Den, February 2019. Creating happiness “There are two things in particular that I enjoy about having a career in real estate,” says Joe Laing, sales consultant and franchise owner with Mike Pero Real Estate.
“T
hat’s the diversity of the job – every day is different – and meeting and developing strong relationships with people. I really like seeing people happy, both vendors and buyers.” Joe has definitely brought happiness to many clients and they have responded to his youthful, open, friendly, yet highly professional approach. In 2014 Joe was the recipient of the Mike Pero Salesperson of the Year Award and this year he was named the second top auction lister and the third top sales lister for the company nationwide. “I was delighted with this result because Mike Pero Real Estate has grown considerably since I first started in 2013 and there is so
much more competition among the agents. I must be doing something right!” Diversity features elsewhere in Joe’s life as well. Originally from Newcastle, England, he has lived in Canada, Australia and now New Zealand. He’s a father to a ninemonth-old daughter, is an avid football fan playing regularly for a successful local team, and a lover of classic cars, especially old Fiats. And, as if all that was not sufficient variety, he is also a part owner of a central city café. “Everything I have done has introduced me to people from all walks of life and that has been immensely helpful for my career.” You can contact Joe on 022 697 2388 or at joe.laing@mikepero.com.

Exceptional rental experience Having worked for a number of years for other large property management companies, Brent Manderson and Steve Hawker decided recently that it was time to do something for themselves, to put their own stamp on the industry. That was how they came to purchase Rentworks Property Management.
“C
hristchurch’s rental market behaves in an unusual manner, quite unlike New Zealand’s other large cities,” say Brent and Steve, the new owners of the successful business. Given this unique environment, it is vital for rental property owners who engage a property management company to have confidence that the company understands the vagaries of the rental market. Between them Steve and Brent have extensive property management experience. “Our emphasis for the business is on developing real and truly personal relationships with our owners and tenants. Not for us a corporate model of being hands-off and perhaps somewhat disconnected from the day to day property management process. We intend to be highly visible as owners working in the
business every day. We invite people to drop in and see us and we certainly intend to meet with all our owners over the next few months.” The duo know that the reason property owners employ a property manager is because they simply don’t have the time or often the knowledge to do this job themselves. “What we do is take the stress away. We handle the myriad of tasks that go with renting a property, from tenant selection and determining rental fees, ensuring rent is paid on time, and conducting regular maintenance inspections and reports.” They know both sides of the business – as property managers and as investment property owners themselves. “We understand rental rates; we know the market and we know what it costs to run a rental property, so we are very well
equipped to give owners advice about current market rates for their particular property. It is also our job to be up to date with any changes in legislation and regulations that might affect the rental property market and to ensure that our owners are made aware of their responsibilities.” At present Rentworks employs two staff also highly experienced in property management. “We would like to grow the business and our staff, but that will definitely not be at the expense of our personal services levels. We believe we live in the best city in the country, and there is no other city with the capacity for growth long term that we see in Christchurch.” For more information, visit 11/337 Harewood Road, Bishopdale, phone 03 359 0308 or visit www.rentworks.net.nz. Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber in Concert at the ITR. It features a superb on-stage orchestra, outstanding soloists and a large chorus. The fully staged and choreographed production features songs from Lloyd Webber shows, such as The Phantom of the Opera, CATS, Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat, Evita and more. The show was devised by Lloyd Webber himself; artistic direction is by Ravil Atlas. Following on from the hugely popular 2009 premier season of Miss Saigon comes the new production of Miss Saigon. Opening 27 September at the ITR, this epic sung-through pop musical is universal in its emotional power; it’s a tragedy of passion and beauty, and is described as one of the most daring theatrical spectacles of all time. As in the 2009 production, the 2019 Miss Saigon will reunite New Zealand’s foremost directing duo of Stephen Robertson and Richard Marrett. Miss Saigon has been nominated for an impressive number of Olivier, Tony and Drama Desk Awards and comes from the creators of Les Misérables. The story is based on Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. Set in the turmoil of the Vietnam War, American GI Chris and Vietnamese girl Kim fall in love and marry but are separated when Saigon falls. Alone, Kim gives birth to Chris’ son and waits faithfully for his return. Unable to contact Kim, Chris remarries and attempts to move on with his life. Circumstances see Chris return to Vietnam and he learns the truth, which brings about tragic consequences. Tickets go on sale from 30 November 2018 and feature 10-30 percent savings on ‘Premium’ and ‘A Reserve’ tickets until 31 January 2019. Recognising that choosing a date to attend a show which is months away can be tricky, Showbiz has introduced the new and fabulous FlexiTicket; this way ticket purchasers can take advantage of the generous 2019 Season discounts without having to commit to a performance date. Flexi tickets can be purchased online and make an ideal gift for your mad-on-musicals mates! Just visit www.ticketek.co.nz.

HAUS OF SONG NYFW RUNWAY
fashion Bell of the Ball By Tracey Edwardes
Bell bottoms are swinging their way back into our wardrobes this season.
I
t’s funny to think that this fashion style was originally created for sailors to readily roll up their trousers, when on messy deck duty. The ’60s has since embraced this look and the ’70s exaggerated it even further. But now, you don’t have to wait for the next fancy-dress party. This fabulous, fun and surprisingly flattering fashion statement will be swooshing down a street near you. Twiggy, Mary Quant, Cher and Farrah Fawcett have handed the trend over to celebs from Katie Holmes to Kate Beckinsale, who relish in the practical comfortableness and sassy style. Unlike the former bootleg cut, the truest bell bottoms flare from the knee and can also start flaring out loosely
from the thigh. The bottom can be as wide as the retro originals at around 65cms. They are not exactly the satin-white Abba variety – this season’s bell bottoms are beautifully boho in dusky denims and suedes and flower-child prints, through to the sharp electric hues of this summer. They are greatfitting, like the NYDJ jeans, and high-waisted this time round – a pair of high heels are a must to balance out all that fabric. It will be so nice to slip your jeans on without having to take your shoes off first. And the down-tothe-ground length covers the craziest of heels. Anything that creates a bit of longer-leg magic will be whole heartedly embraced. I would like to place a bet that this look may very well linger on!

Stepping T out in style Whether you’re arriving at a party at dusk or strolling along a sun-bleached esplanade, metallic leather is about making a style statement.
he Women’s ECCO Touch Flatform is crafted from metallic Ecco Vibrio leather, with double foil finish – designed to shimmer and sparkle as it catches the light. The metallic finish, achieved through an innovative layering process, can be applied to a selection of base colours. Combining silvery blue hues with golden yellows, Ecco Vibrio’s two-tone effect adds depth and softness, bringing a subtle, sophisticated edge to any
silhouette. As well as adding glint and glamour, Ecco Vibrio is velvety to the touch – with the leather specially milled to improve your shoe’s softness and comfort. The leather-covered inlay sole with Ecco Comfort Fibre System™ technology cushions the foot and helps it to breathe. NOT JUST A WATCH - PART OF YOU

What inspired you to enter the Best Dressed competition? Looking at all the amazing outfits, I just wanted to be a part of this fun and glamour each year. This only happens once a year so we try to make the most of it and over the years have developed many new friendships. I love going to the races with my crazy and beautiful race buddies. How did you come up with the concept for your award-winning combination? After my big win in Auckland Derby Day in March, I came home and started drawing in my book as usual, making sketches just thinking what I could design that would be a little different and also day wear. One of my sketches just stood out and I went with that one. Finding the right fabric is always a hard one for me. I went through hundreds of fabrics before I came across this one and the moment I saw it, I knew it was a winner. I didn’t know where or when but I had a feeling this was going to do well. As soon as my fabric arrived, I got my friend Jo Laurenson, who is my seamstress, to cut a pattern so I could send the left-over fabric to my milliner

Irene Moore. After six or more long months I was quite pleased with the outcome. Jo did an amazing job on it, the lace was very hard to work with but she made it look amazing. How would you define style – do you have a particular inspiration in the sartorial sphere? Originality is style. I think that when you create something yourself with all your hard work, that is style. I love and follow what Dior brings out each year; their new colours and amazing inspirational outfits. What do you envision for fashion in 2019? I know I shouldn’t, but I have already started to make sketches in my book; more challenges for my seamstress. I have just signed a contract working along with another amazing designer and together hopefully we can create some cool stuff. I love colour but I think 2019 will be quite different with simple but bright colours. I’m hoping to see some dark blues. How did you feel the moment your name was announced as the Best Dressed Lady? Best feeling ever, funny thing is the moment they said ‘Best Dressed Lady goes to…’ in my heart I called out my name hahaha. Sounds weird I know, but my husband who was standing across from the winning post videoing us said the same thing, that he called out my name in his heart. I think that was very sweet. I’m super chuffed and very grateful to all the sponsors. I think they need to be applauded.

How long have you been interested in fashion? I think it was 2012 when I first tagged along with one of my friends who was entering in the fashion competition. I thought I could do this too so Addington was the place that I entered my first comp. From a farm in North Canterbury I’m always in my gumboots working so I look forward to dressing up every year now.

Straddle the seasonal divide By Tracey Edwardes
Some clothing is for winter, some is reserved for hot summer days – and then there are those clever pieces that straddle the seasonal divide. We look at some ideas to create an all-season wardrobe. Double-up dresses A fabulously fitting dress, structured in well-made quality fabric, can look perfect for a summer’s day with bare legs, strappy sandals and a smile. However, teamed with tights, boots and a jacket, it can see the winter through. Whether it’s a shirt dress or a shift dress, strong colours, bold florals and little black numbers can all sail stylishly through the calendar. Shoes that breathe The cut away shoe style is open-toed and possibly sling-backed, but still with plenty of structure. They can be worn with warm tights, or just tanned feet and painted-toes. Best of all, they allow the feet to breathe in summer and not be suffocated in winter. They are great for undecided spring/autumn weather
– you can just take your socks off. Cute flat ankle boots with little pinholes are a trans-seasonal must-have. The denim jacket Teamed with floaty summer shorts and skirts, or cosy jeans and boots, the denim jacket is your forever-edgy fashion friend. The all-year-round staple is a real faithful. Whether embellished with bling, or a simple faded classic, they suit us all. Natural-fibre knits The latest fabrics in knitwear mean not having to pack away winter woollies. Cotton knits and the finest merino give layering options and style for all seasons. In zip-up cardigans, jackets, jumpers and slinky tops – it’s natural, breathable, trans-seasonal warmth without the bulk.

Fabulous footwear: The fashionable feet of the 90s were adorned with heavy-duty combat boots, simple slip-ons from Birkenstocks to Adidas scuffs, while Converse’s Chuck Taylors and Manolo Blahnik’s Mary Jane style shoes too were on high rotation.

Not over overalls: Dungarees or overalls are hitting the sartorial consciousness in a very big way. They’re the closet staple of the 2010s; easy to slip into, effortless and ridiculously chic.

THE BODY SHOP COLOUR CRUSH EYESHADOWS The long or short of it: Midriff-baring crop tops were a 90s must-have. Why not relive the best fashion from the decade by pairing a crop top with a pair of mum jeans, a chic combination that is a favourite of celebrities and street style stars alike.

Cyclical trends: They say fashion does a full circle and it meets this brief in a more literal way this sartorial season, with round glasses the current hot property of eyewear, adding a vintage vibe to any outfit. Skirting the rules: The denim skirt is having a moment. The ’90s and early-2000s throwback is making the rounds this summer, in varying lengths and styles. All choked up: In the 90s, chokers came in stretchy plastic to resemble tattoos, while others boasted a fabric construction featuring charms and jewels. Now they are well and truly back in fashion and add that chic ’90’s touch to any outfit. Scrunched up: Hair accessories like scrunchies were a favourite of this decade and everything from satin to glamorous velvet designs added colour to ponytails, buns and even pigtails.

he dental benefit is a reciprocal relationship. If you eat well you will have healthy teeth and gums; if you have healthy teeth and gums you will eat well and enjoy a variety of foods through your whole life without dentures. Dr Rhonda Gooding shared the knowledge that poor oral health has been linked to heart disease, clogged arteries, strokes and pregnancy complications. She says the mouth is a window to the rest of your body and can help detect early signs of systemic diseases, e.g. mouth ulcers are a symptom of coeliac and crohns disease or nutritional deficiencies. Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health. Hygienist, Micayela thinks
great looking teeth need great looking gums. She suggests regular hygienist care to remove stains and tartar in conjunction with brushing twice a day and flossing every night. Recent research out of America proves that every $1 spent on dental prevention (such as hygiene visits) saves $8-$50 on dental treatment long term. Dr Christine Duxbury firmly believes in the value of a friendly smile. Feel confident that your teeth and smile look healthy and attractive. SILVER LININGS By Tracey Edwardes
I
Silver has never lost its lustre. The everlasting semi-precious metal in all its forms is still taking centre stage across fashion and accessories.
t eludes to the stars, the sea, a silvery moon – it can shout anything from edgy with attitude, to pure princess. As a statement or a complement to any look, silver still rocks! Silver is simply sparkling in jewellery, fashion, handbags, and silver locks
are such a glamourous look for hair. As we edge a little closer to a very sci-fi sounding 2020, long ago predicted Star Trek-type fashion pages are not quite as spacesuit we thought. Silver now nods to our former heydays, just as much as does the future.

Finest vintage filigree is in vogue, as equally as luxurious Scandinavian minimalist pieces, as local and international jewellery designers are embracing silver as a medium to get creative. Silver is youthful, but also timeless, suiting all skin types and tones in jewellery. Swarovski crystals, pearls and semi-precious gems always beguile from their beds of silver. With developments in materials and techniques, silver is cleverly embossed or blended into the colour wheel. Shimmering silver is woven into delicate cotton knits, embellished into soft leathers of the latest summer sandals, melding with blush, lilacs and baby blues to create the iridescent appeal of a seashell. There is much variance, from palest white-silver or rose-hued, to an almost pewter. The silvery wow-factor is now as much for day as for night. Once glittering up for a glam evening was the thing, now it’s almost mandatory to exude a little, or a lot, of shimmer in the sunlight. Mixing it up with other metallics also creates an original ensemble. Gold loves silver too.

Seeking stories By Sarah Jarvis
With a rising suicide rate in New Zealand, two Christchurch women are writing a book on the highly emotional subject in the hope of raising awareness about the issue.
J
an England and Sheryn Gillard Glass are looking for people to share their stories with them so they can publish a book on suicide – a subject which is too often associated with feelings of shame and stigma. “We are hoping by sharing the stories of those who have had to deal with the loss of a loved one [to suicide] it may help others who find themselves in the same situation,” Jan says. A retired solicitor, Sheryn says they would also like to hear from people who survived a suicide attempt. “It’s such an emotional subject but one that needs to be talked about.” In August, Chief Coroner, Judge Deborah Marshall released the annual provisional suicide statistics showing 668 people died by suicide in New Zealand in 2017/18. It was the highest number of deaths since the statistics were first recorded in 2007/08. Navigating the tragedy of loss is familiar to both women who have known someone who has taken their own life. “It is such a shock,” says Jan, a casual retirement village manager.
Jan and Sheryn co-authored their first book Adoption New Zealand in 2002. The book came about after the law changed and the women got talking about the number of adoptions and the trials and tribulations people faced. “It was such a shame their stories weren’t being told – so we decided to tell them,” Sheryn says.
Friends for nearly 50 years, Sheryn says it was always their intention to keep writing. “We originally wanted to write a series of books but time went by and somewhere along the line we became grandmothers…”
It took three years to compile Adoption New Zealand but they are confident this one will be done in less time. “We know what we are doing this time,” Sheryn smiles. The women say the reaction to their first book was wonderful and they were honoured to be a part of some amazing stories. “Everyone has a story to tell,” Jan says. Jan and Sheryn are now actively looking for people to feature in the suicide book. New Zealand has criminal laws governing what can and can’t be said when it comes to reporting suicide. Sheryn says they are aware of the law and will adhere to it. “We are hoping this book will raise awareness around suicide and the impact it has on people who are left to deal with the loss,” she says. “We also would love to hear from those who have survived an attempt on their lives and how they got through it.” If you would like to be involved please phone Jan on 03 352 1527 or phone Sheryn on 021 355 109. hile there is a waiting list for the gorgeous villas, 14 stunning apartments are now completed and waiting for their new owners to join the village and live the dream. More like smaller villas than apartments, there are spacious one and two bed options, and you’ll have to be quick on your feet to snap up the fabulous corner units. Every room has a sizeable balcony, appliances are included, there is a fully equipped laundry and bathrooms are airy with under-tile heating and a call bell system. The kitchens are a wonderful surprise, full sized and completely equipped so residents can have the family in for an evening meal. The views are lovely, and each apartment is architecturally designed and beautifully finished. The care package is for those
seeking a little extra help and means you don’t have to cook or clean for yourself. The Clubhouse is complete and contains an array of spaces including the billiard room, library, cinema, dining area for apartment and villa residents, and café. Fourteen apartments and the Activity Centre are brand new. The Activity Centre houses the gym, bowling green, plus the pool and spa. A ‘man shed’ completes the suite, and to complete the hospitality options, there is a unique fully-licensed bar. Manager Olivia Cleave says, “Our interiors blew the budget a little” and you can see for yourself where the money went – the award-winning interior design is just divine. Sophisticated yet homely, the art is all one-off pieces and complements the custom-made furniture. Don’t forget to look up – the lampshades upstairs are handmade in Melbourne and from designer lighting specialists in Auckland.
As well as organised recreational activities, residents run a lot of clubs and groups themselves. “We are really keen on that, it promotes independence and the feeling that this is their place,” Olivia says. The residents’ choir is popular and going from strength to strength. “All we do is create a beautiful environment for our people to feel at home in. “As well as safety and security, companionship and fun is a really big draw card at Lady Wigram, and the friendships are such a boost from a health and wellbeing perspective,” Olivia says. “It’s a great lifestyle, they love it here and there is never a dull moment.” For sales contact Sarah Jacobson on 027 341 1464, or view at www.goldenhealthcare.co.nz. Va Va I Vegan By Melinda Collins
Limiting or excluding meat, dairy products and eggs was once on the cusp of consumer consciousness. But now veganism is hitting the mainstream. A menu that was traditionally not universally available or appetising, today it is all that and a bag of kale chips.
n New Zealand, more than half of Kiwis say they are eating less meat, and a quarter expect to be mostly meat-free by 2025, according to the results of a recent survey by Bean Supreme. Meanwhile to research from Stanford University in the United States suggests a produce-driven diet directly helps the health of the planet in more ways than one: growing produce generates fewer carbon emissions and uses less water than raising livestock, resulting in less of an environmental toll.

tephan Kriegelstein has been appointed Executive Chef at Original Sin Restaurant in Christchurch. Kriegelstein has spent the past 15 years cooking for some of the best award-winning restaurants in Europe, sharing kitchens with Michelin-starred chefs and developing a unique culinary style, using seasonal produce to create contemporary yet unpretentious dishes. His philosophy, ‘cooking is an expression of love, passion and joy of life’ can be found in every aspect of Stephan’s life. He began his career as a cook in the regional Bavarian restaurant Alpengasthof Sonnenhof. After finishing his traineeship, he started working in the restaurant of Colombi Hotel in Freiburg, which holds a Michelin star. Next was to the renowned Grand Hotel Kronenhof and Hotel Waldhaus Sils Maria in Switzerland, after which he returned to Germany to work for the prestigious Relais & Châteaux Hotel Vilino at Lake Constance. While in Switzerland he met Kristina, who was about to finish culinary school. They set off to work together at some of the best restaurants in Switzerland and Austria and now they are here in Christchurch, bringing their expertise to Original Sin. “It is our aim to re-explore regional and traditional specialties,” Stephan says. “Our guests should receive a sophisticated insight into the Canterbury region, combined with the harmony of nature and the variety of food we have here. We will bring all our expertise, using modern cooking techniques which will meet flavours from New Zealand and all over the world, only using the best produce from regional businesses and farmers. We will create classic dishes with a unique twist – keeping our German background in mind.” Join the Oxford Club to receive special deals and a 5 percent credit back from Fat Eddies, Kong, Bealey Ale House, The Bog and, of course, Original Sin. Refined dining, not fine dining Distinction Hotel in Cathedral Square has something to smile about and we do too. Alex Ensor, a hatted chef who has just returned from the Middle East where he won the BBC GOOD FOOD restaurant of the year award, has joined the team and we are the ones that are going benefit from that.
tarting his culinary journey at Huka Lodge New Zealand before heading to Australia and working for world renowned chefs Guillaume Brahimi and Dietmar Sawyere, Alex has had more than 20 years’ experience in leading hotels and restaurants, all of which consistently won awards. With hats being the equivalent of Michelin stars in Australasia, Alex brings a wealth of experience and passion and the new menu at Distinction Hotel is benefiting from that experience. Designed to be accessible, it’s refined dining without being fine dining. Seared scallops on creamy cauliflower puree, parsnip crisps splashed with apple and yellow curry oil, crispy skin corned Canter Valley duck breast with kumara puree, braised cabbage, sticky mustard seed dressing, smooth peanut butter parfait with dried fig puree, oven roasted salted peanuts, paillette feuilletine, are just some of the exceptional meals made using loyal local produce; that’s the way Alex wants it. What Alex is excited about is bringing quality, good sized plates of food to the people of Christchurch. “We want everybody to come and experience Gumption. Our team are here because we are proud of what we do and that reflects in not only our service but our attitude toward preparing new and delicious food,” he says. Gumption Restaurant & Bar is open 6am till 10am for breakfast, 5:30pm till 10pm for dinner. The bar has an all-day menu available from 11am until 10pm and all items can be enjoyed wherever the guests choose in either the bar or restaurant. Reservations for Gumption can be made via the main hotel number 03 377 7000. Bon appetit.

Confection Perfection Nothing quite epitomises the Kiwi Christmas more than the traditional pavlova however, there’s more than one way to create this confection perfection.
Magical Marshmallow For an extra marshmallowy variation of the classic, why not try a simple strawberry pavlova roll, complete with fruit pulp. Or, give a meringue roulade a go for a delicious twist on the classic!
1.
2.
3.
Mini Morsels There’s no denying pavlovas can be a serving nightmare. To keep your creation pretty on the plate, why not simplify things with these mini morsels. Quick cooking, quick cooling and ideal to bake ahead, mini pavlovas or meringues are sure to be a recipe you turn to time and again. Pavlova Tree If you’re feeling creative, why not make a Christmas tree from mini pavlovas? You could use green food
colouring with your pavlovas, use cream to stack them in a triangle formation, then decorate with edible Christmas decorations.
4.
5.
Choc Champion Adding a little chocolate to your pavlova creates a decadent fudgy dessert that will blow your mind. Pair this recipe with a generous dollop of whipped cream, grated chocolate, flaked almonds and a scattering of fresh raspberries. Ice ice baby When it’s fast and sensational you’re after, using icing sugar in place of caster sugar cuts down on beating requirements, preventing the egg white from becoming overworked and stiff, resulting in a beautiful marshmallowy middle. Take it to
the next level with a drool-worthy tiramisu torte.
6.
Beautiful Banoffee Combing banoffee and pavlova, you know it’s going to be a winner. Made from two meringue discs (that sandwich together), cream, chocolate, caramel and banana, it’s a stunning dessert that looks as impressive as it tastes.
7.
Out of left field For something a little different, why not try layered tortes, such as a delicious tropical coconut meringue delight or a crushed pavlova parfait. There’s so much you can do with a marshmallowy meringue base and with the internet at your disposal, why not let you fingers do the walking?

Handcrafted dim sum arts
T
When it comes to the quintessential Cantonese dining experience, the most popular expression comes to mind is ‘yum cha’, the Cantonese words for ‘drinking tea’ that refers to Cantonese tea lunch.
aichi Restaurant, in Shop 8, Spitfire Square by the airport, is the real deal when it comes to authentic yum cha. Taichi is a family affair, with generations of experience in hospitality and making great food. The soul of Cantonese yum cha is its dim sum arts, and Taichi Restaurant is committed to carrying on the tradition,
offering the authentic Cantonese taste. The chef Wen is a dim sum master, determined to make dim sum with the most traditional handcrafted methods. With a comprehensive background in dim sum creation, including experience as the Dim Sum Head Chef at InterContinental Hotel in Hainan, Wen has deep understanding of the dim sum tradition, as well as the expectations of the customers. He believes people come to yum cha not simply to satisfy their taste, but more importantly, to experience the Cantonese cuisine culture. Dishes like Taichi’s famous Dim Sum are a big hit with regulars. The four kings of dim sum, prawn dumplings, sui mai, BBQ buns, egg tarts are exactly the classic examples of handcrafted dim sum dishes loved by its customers. With enough room to seat 150 people, Taichi can easily accommodate your nearest and dearest for your next private or corporate function. Open six days a week, it is well worth a look.

You read that right. FASTING. It sounds like deprivation 101. But really, those who do this say intermittent fasting is a form of freedom. There’s a lightness of being. There’s belt-easing. Also, there’s more time to plan some fabulous party fare over a peppermint tea. Here’s a hypothesis: Could we be less inclined to overconsume when we’ve cut quantities, and when our morsels are packed to the gunnels with flavour and texture? Maybe that’s what our chefs are trying to teach us. Why? Because the days of all-youcan-eat are (hopefully) falling well behind us in our cultural culinary journey. The global trend seems to be ever more toward shared, flavoursome tasting plates. It’s easy, if you feel starved, to want your own meal. For dining out, tapas and the like are on the rise, making us experience and dare more, without having to fully commit. When you’ve been almost-fasting, even small, tad-portions with delectable, sensual flavour punches will satisfy. Bon appetit!

home MUSTARD MADE THE SHORTY LOCKER Locked up Lockers became the coolest thing out when industrial retro was hot – and their sheer practicality now lives on. However, school-corridor grey has blossomed into new versions of dusky pinks through to mint greens – akin to a New York apartment. Single tall storage lockers are perfect to slot into those onceredundant narrow wall spaces. Metal is fire proof, so keep precious documents and mementos under the locker’s lock and key. Down the ladder Whether it’s a retro ladder with added shelves, or an affordable new version, cascading ladder shelving is perfect to store handy items or to showcase beautiful things. Transportable, they are great in bathrooms for towels and toiletries, bedrooms for toys and trinkets, or for book collections and plants in the lounge. Either weathered vintage or beach-house white, the trend reflects all themes.

Modern storage is about much more than the classic wall unit – although even these are evolving into creative pieces in their own right, as space becomes a premium. Options are clever, unique and fantastically functional.

L
ove it or loath it, it’s Christmas. Whether you are planning a formal Christmas dinner or a casual barbecue on the deck, it is always special for you and your guests to enjoy something a little different and to embrace the Christmas theme. Pinterest is a great option for last minute inspiration, especially if you are running a busy household like myself. So here are some creatively inspiring options. Greenery that reflects Christmas for New Zealanders and commonly found in our gardens is perfect for your xmas table; olive branches, rosemary, bunches of fresh thyme, pine tree, baytree leaves and branches, and of course buxus balls. The fragrance of some of these greeneries can also be perfect for enhancing our food, including rosemary, thyme and pine. Cutting off sprigs or branches and adding gold, white, red Christmas
decorations can set the scene without spending a fortune. Get creative, people! For a more casual country look, natural raw brown string linens, with tea lights, fairy lights or long candle sticks in various colours to match your theme, can quickly create interesting centrepieces and place settings for your xmas table. Cinnamon sticks are a lovely twist for a traditional setting and florals will complement the base of the greenery. Meanwhile, white tablecloths, linens, or paper napkins will complement the Christmas colours well. Spending special time with family over the holidays is the perfect opportunity to write your list of what you would like done to your interiors for 2019. A new kitchen or ensuite, new drapes or a lovely new sofa? Contact us we would love to help you. Merry Christmas, much love, Angelique. Visit armstronginteriors.co.nz or phone 03 356 2636.

New Zealand is no stranger to seismic activity and Christchurch residents know only too well the importance of structural integrity. Widespread liquefaction has affected countless building foundations in the region, including the Kamahi Apartments, an eight-storey residential apartment building in Merivale.

hen Bruce McDonald from KCRB Ltd purchased Kamahi Apartments, geotechnical engineers confirmed that the building needed to be re-levelled and structurally strengthened to meet the New Building Standard (NBS). Due to the building’s height, Bruce wanted absolute confidence when taking steps to achieve 100 percent NBS. Having remediated hundreds of structures affected by seismic liquefaction, including the Christchurch Art Gallery, ground engineering specialist Mainmark had proven longevity, expertise and trusted solutions. “Mainmark came up as being the major player based on reputation, results and confidence in a good outcome,” Bruce says. Thorough geotechnical investigations of ground conditions identified there was adequate stability to proceed
with re-levelling the building, which had suffered differential settlement. Mainmark technicians worked around the clock to achieve the required level tolerances across the entire building’s footprint, completing works before Christmas 2017. This then allowed extensive renovation and refurbishment of the Kamahi Apartments to be completed, preparing the building for occupancy. Based on his experiences, Bruce recommends avoiding assumptions when it comes to structural safety. “Make sure you ascertain the current capability in the ground as well as the building, so you can get the right people to quote the right remedies relevant to your site. If you try to take a shortcut that needs to be fixed retrospectively, it can be very costly.” www.mainmark.com Metropol December 06, 2018 67

Beyond Compare A visit to French Blue in Normans Road feels like a little sojourn through some of the loveliest spots of Europe. Here is a gift boutique where rarity and quality are paramount to owner Catherine Matthews.
W
ith Christmas but days away, French Blue offers the opportunity to gift loved ones with something that is distinctive, exceptional and beyond compare. If handmade, handstitched, delicate creations are something you value, then some darling Christmas angels, made by Angela Gordon, will be delightful additions to your Christmas theme at home, as would be any of the exquisite Christmas
decorations on display. With jewellery from Mexico, Israel, France, Spain and Italy, there is a gorgeous array of bijoux ranging from necklaces and pendants through to bangles, bracelets, earrings and rings. The Italian leatherware (wallets, card holders, notebooks, etc) is heaven to stroke, and the colours are muted, gentle, yet so very sophisticated. Women will adore the selection of linen, cashmere and silk scarves from Italy and Amsterdam, and French Market Baskets from Morocco will add that splash of dash. Dress your dining-room with the finest linen, place Swedish candlesticks as your centrepiece and finish with some Polish, English or Spanish tableware. Should you be the designated person preparing Christmas dinner, treat yourself to a set of handmade kitchen knives by Peter Lorimer and work will seem a pleasure. Once your guests have left, luxuriate in a bath with French or Italian soaps, and light your scented candle from Cornwall. Bliss.

SAVOURING THE
Kiwi Summer Architect Craig South looks forward to the Christmas break and celebrates the Kiwi holiday tradition of sharing good times with friends and family.
W
hether it’s a staycation at home, a holiday at a camping ground in a tent or campervan, or a motel, bach or crib getaway, most New Zealanders will be looking forward to enjoying some welldeserved time off after another busy year. One of the best things about the end of the year break is being able to relax with friends and family, who often converge at the same holiday spot year after year. Many have their favourite place, whether it’s Golden Bay and the Abel Tasman National Park, Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs or Central Otago. A lot of people love the predictability of spending the break at their time-honoured camping ground, motel, or memory-filled family bach. As a parent, I love how holidays bring opportunities for family adventures and new experiences, such as roughing it out in a tent somewhere in the bush or exploring
unfamiliar cycle trails. A holiday by a lake opens up the chance to try out some water sports. Beach holidays mean sandcastles, body surfing and lazing on beach towels under a sun umbrella… of course, don’t forget the sunblock. Holiday accommodation can have a big influence on the overall experience. From an architect’s perspective, your ‘home away from home’ ought to feel positively different and yet remain in synch with how you and your family like to live and relax. In our own practice, Architect Cymon Allfrey’s award-winning family bach at Hanmer Springs is a great example of how good playful design can work so well. Drawn together around a recessed patio and timber decks, this holiday retreat includes three small buildings designed to take in the views and soak up all-day sun. It simultaneously provides privacy and places to socialise and is poised to become
a lasting legacy for the family. Every person will have different ideas about where they’d love to build a dream bach and what it would look like. These ideas are the starting point for a good design. A great holiday home will also seamlessly fit with its location. Sea views, sliders and decks will likely be priorities for a beach bach, while a crib near the mountains could have a drying room and an open fire to keep things cosy. Regardless of location, most people will opt for bunks somewhere to accommodate multiple families, though these can be configured in many different ways. A well-designed Kiwi bach will grow into an intergenerational treasure, loved by grandchildren and grandparents alike. It is a place for sharing experiences and shaping summer memories. Friends may come and set up a tent on the lawn, while children run around outside and adults gather on the deck. Whatever you do these holidays – and wherever you go – I wish you all the best for an enjoyable summer break. www.caarc.co.nz Metropol December 06, 2018 69

2. CONTEMPORARY Modern and contemporary are two styles frequently used interchangeably. Contemporary is different from modern because it describes design based on the here and now. The primary difference separating modern and contemporary design style is that modern is a strict interpretation of design that started in the 20th century. Contemporary design is more flowing with more curving lines. 3. TRADITIONAL Traditional design style offers classic details, elegant furnishings, and an abundance of accessories. Traditional design is rooted with European flavour and offers depth, layering and dimension within their design displays.

Interior Design Style Choices By Jenafor Rollins
Which choice is your pick?
1. MODERN Modern is a broad design term that typically refers to a home with clean, crisp lines and a simple colour palette that uses materials such as metal, glass or steel. Modern designs use simplicity with their furnishing and accessory statements. Sleek is generally associated with the modern look along with simple and minimal accessories.
4. RUSTIC Rustic design is drawn from being inspired by nature and uses raw and often unfinished elements including wood and stone. Rustic design may incorporate accessories from the outdoors with warmth resonating from the design. Architectural details may include features like vaulted ceilings with wood beams or wood floors. 5. HOLLYWOOD GLAM Hollywood Glam is a design style that tends to be luxurious, over-the-top and opulent. It’s a dramatic design style, perfect for a homeowner who enjoys making a statement.

Design cues from the past are injecting old world glamour into our interiors. Make a luxurious style statement and bring a little French antiquity or Victorian manor into your world.
Chic chandeliers It doesn’t matter if your home is all downlights, hang one from the rafters anyway – just for the romantic effect. Glamorise a plain bathroom, accentuate a dining table or enchant
a bedroom. Whether Phantom of the Opera crystal drama or candle styles, chandeliers are the cliché of timeless class. Identical versions of the classics are illuminating lighting stores everywhere.

Recline in grandeur The classical chaise lounge is a charming Victorian-inspired piece to fill a purpose in any room. The decadent deep-buttoning on couches to cushions, originally hails from the 1700s, as in rolled-armed Chesterfield couches. This immortal style is now very in vogue.
Glamour Antiqued fittings and fixtures Ironically, modern techniques can be thanked for the large inflow of antique-style allure. Today’s tapware for bathrooms and kitchens is not just a
chrome affair. They are expertly antiqued, or shiny in copper, brass, gold, and pewter effects. This finishes a chosen theme, as much more than a functional necessity.

Christmas goes ‘modern NZ’ Iconic Christchurch store Terra Viva is a veritable mecca of all things Christmas, between the garden centre, the inspiring home and giftwares department, and the fully-licensed café. Metropol catches up with Terra Viva’s effervescent Peter Worsp about what we can expect to see decking the halls in 2018.
T
erra Viva Home & Garden has made a quantum leap from the ‘good old days’ when Christmas decorations were all about Father Christmas and always in red velvet and gold. Contemporary Christmas decorations have a great New Zealand look and, because they don’t have a strongly specific Christmas design, they’re multipurpose and can be used all year round. There’s a definite move away from the short annual outing for three weeks at Christmas – makes a lot more sense! Even the Christmas trees themselves are quite different, with LED/seed lights,
and the most popular line is the white or black stemmed lit trees which give a simply superb look all year round. Combine the soft glow with candles and tealights, and double the effect by placing them in front of a mirror. LED/seed lights/fairy lights are the quick and easy way to create a festive glow, so coil them into glass vases with green foliage, or artificial flowers, and there’s an instant table decoration. A small wreath of foliage around each jar, artificial or real, adds the finishing touch. The contemporary colour themes focus on soft mossy greens, greys, natural wood, cream, vintage-effect paint finishes
with silver or glittering glass to enhance and contrast. The stars this year are the appealing little felted unicorns, mice and dogs dressed in ballerina outfits – little skirts etc – along with the ceramic animals. Their cuteness appeals strongly to children, so use them all year round in shadow boxes. If you’re heading off to the bach for Christmas, check out the strong New Zealand coastal theme with shell hangings, and shell/bead/pearl cones for table centrepieces – these are decorations that will still look the part long after the festive season is over.

stock pot, saute and fry pan, and a selection of pot sizes. Staggeringly pretty to look at, it seems a shame to clutter the pieces up with food! Cooking becomes performance art with the Master Pro Portable Infusion Smoker. This bijou device will entertain your friends and dazzle their taste buds as you produce table-top smoked oysters and seafood cocktails, vegetables and cheeses, flavoured by apple or hickory woodchips. Intriguing gifts are everywhere: the animal lover in your life will delight in the cat and dog celebration Christmas crackers, while the hedonist will be thrilled with the Soam shea butter Merry Christmas soaps. All budgets are catered for, and you can create a Christmas that is bespoke to you with the range of napkins, candles and table decorations. Like the man said, “I’ll be back”. The Timeball Station is one of the few of its kind left in the world. From 1876 to 1934 a ball dropped from its mast on its stone tower, signalling the time to ships in Lyttelton Harbour. Visual time signals such as this have historically been important features of many of the world’s ports, playing an integral role in correcting ships’ chronometers and ensuring accurate navigation. The Victorian-era Timeball Station in Lyttelton Harbour was damaged beyond repair in the 22 February 2011 earthquake. “The building’s owner, Heritage New Zealand looked for a project manager with demonstrable experience in the heritage sector to secure a main contractor for the Timeball Station’s rebuild and to manage the programme and the construction phase,” Threadgall says. “We at The Building Intelligence Group are known for this type of project. Over the past year we have worked with all the companies and professionals involved in the rebuild to complete the Timeball’s reconstruction on time and on budget.”

Heritage New Zealand explains that the rebuild philosophy was to retain as much of the original fabric of the building as practicable. “We wanted to ensure that when locals saw the building each day it was familiar. The return of the Timeball Station and Timeball also fits well with the regeneration of Lyttelton that is going on.” The $2 million reconstruction was on the former site using original materials salvaged from the careful deconstruction that took place following the earthquakes. As Stephen Threadgall says, “heritage projects can have their challenges. So to have the work progress so well to such a superb outcome gave our team immense satisfaction.” A fine example of Victorian technology, the Timeball Station is one of only five in the world known to be still in working order. A rare piece of maritime history, it has now been fabulously restored and boasts spectacular views over Lyttelton Harbour.

The World Luxury Hotel Awards are the pinnacle of achievement in the luxury

AN ITALIAN BEAUTY WITH JAW-DROPPING REFINEMENT
T
he top is down on a beautiful Canterbury day. You’ve been at a winery up near Waipara enjoying the company of not just car enthusiasts, but Ferrari enthusiasts. You put your foot down on the accelerator and those ponies thrust you past the car in front with total accuracy and speed. I was fortunate enough to be invited to be part of Continental Ferrari’s visit to Christchurch in early October and got the opportunity to take a Ferrari GTC4Lusso and a Ferrari Portofino out to see what they could do. The Ferrari GTC4Lusso is 507 kW and ramps up from 0-100 in 3.4 seconds. A stunning 4-seater, tourer, it is an Italian beauty with jaw-dropping refinement. Everywhere you look it’s like a work of art. Everything can be refined to your specification. I noted some of the other vehicles, about 12 in total, had been personalised. There were a couple of 458s that I had a hard time recognising and Neil from Ferrari explained that, “If you own one, you want it to be YOUR one, so we bespoke them for the client”. I spent some time with Doug Price who owns a 1995 Ferrari F355 GTS; the first Ferrari with power steering and gear linkages. Doug was fantastic, briefing me for a good half hour about
his F355 and explain the ethos of the club. “We all love Ferrari Nick. Old or new, it doesn’t matter; the drive, the sound, we just love them.” He pretty much personified all the club members; approachable, down to earth men and women who are totally passionate about the Ferrari brand. I was joined on the drive back by Robert Pegg from Ferrari in the Ferrari Portofino; a two-door convertible twincharged V8 3,855 litre, seven-speed dual clutch, 0-100 in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 320kph. The only official dealer for Ferrari in New Zealand since 1973, Continental Cars officially opened a dedicated Ferrari Service Centre here in Christchurch last year. It also operates as a base to display the very latest Ferrari models and hosts local drive activities with its South Island Ferrari owners. I got given the nickname ‘showpony’ once. But the only showpony that day was the prancing pony that is Ferrari. It is the ultimate in automotive style and performance. Getting back into my car was completely deflating. But I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity. Everyone should drive a Ferrari at least once in their life, shouldn’t they?

rices start at $53,495 for the entry level 2WD GSX. This increases to $55,955 if you want four-wheel drive. My test car was the range topping 4WD Limited at $62,495. Both GSX and Limited come standard with Mazda’s newest SkyActiv 2.2-litre diesel engine with 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque. This is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. On the outset, the CX8’s fluidic styling takes the best bits of the CX5 and CX9, creating a rather handsome SUV. Though at first glance it would be hard to distinguish the newcomer over its smaller brother. Inside the same feeling of quality and
refinement which adorns Mazda’s range, makes a welcome return. The leather trim is sumptuous and the high transmission tunnel leaves you cocooned by your surroundings. Interior fit and finish are first rate, though headroom is quite restrictive, especially in the rear. Mazda has been very generous in providing the CX8 with a tonne of standard kit. The base model gets all of Mazda’s latest i-ACTIVSENSE safety technologies, including a new Traffic Sign Recognition system and Intelligent Speed Assistant. There’s also Smart City Brake Support, Forward/Reverse autonomous emergency braking, Lane-keep Assist, Departure

Warning System and Blind Spot Monitoring. Other standard features include Mazda’s 7.0-inch infotainment system, head-up display, automatic LED headlights, threezone air-conditioning, digital radio and Bluetooth, satellite-navigation and rear parking sensors. In fact, the only feature missing is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The CX-8 also contains 209 litres of boot space and, with the those extra two seats in the rear folded down, this increases to a sizeable 742 litres. On the move, the Skyactiv diesel engine is a gem. At cruising speed at 1600rpm, the noise is almost non-existent, while the linear powerband means the power is always there when you need it. Acceleration itself is brisk and remarkably refined, plus around town, I was averaging 7L/100km, which is pretty impressive. In the great wide open the CX8 continues to impress. It features the same suspension and steering set up as the CX9. This includes Mazda’s new G-Vectoring Control set up, which means corners require no real effort to negotiate. Body roll is kept at a minimum which is great for a high riding car and ride quality is sublime too. So, is the Mazda CX8 worth considering? Of course. Despite no petrol option and slightly restrictive headroom for those extra seats, the CX8 provides Mazda with yet another hit in this ever-growing and vastly competitive market.

AUSSIE LIO The Holden Captiva wasn’t much to shout about. Against the competition, it sadly failed to cut the mustard in terms of design, function and driving dynamics. Clearly a re-think was required and Holden has responded brilliantly with the all-new Equinox.

buttons and switches feeling a tad second rate. However, the Equinox claws back with a gargantuan amount of interior space. Whether you factor in the front and rear seats, or its 846-litre boot (which can be increased to 1798-litres with 60/40 split seats folded flat), this cat has more than enough room to swing one. On the move, the Equinox does rather well. The nine-speed automatic box shifts up and down smoothly, and the punch from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with 188kW and 353Nm of torque is epic. From low down to beyond the mid-range, the combination of power and torque left me barrelling along much quicker than expected. However, its combined 8.4L/100km fuel consumption figures mean it does like to drink and infrequent torque steer keeps you on your toes. The LTZ-V is actually a full-time front wheel drive car until you activate the AWD mode on the centre console. Steering can be vague, but in the corners themselves the Equinox, despite a kerb weight of 1778kg, tracks well and true, especially in AWD mode. Despite the minor drawbacks, the Holden Equinox LTZ-V has a lot going for it. With plenty of grunt, features and class leading interior space, this Holden SUV is well worth considering and proof there is plenty of life in the Aussie lion yet.

imed squarely at the Mazda CX5 and Honda’s HRV, the Mexican built Equinox, which sits firmly between the smaller Trax and larger all-new Acadia, is leading Holden’s charge in the intensely competitive mid-sized premium SUV market, but is it any good? Styling wise the Equinox is a big improvement over its Captiva predecessor. Its unmistakable American lines certainly help the Equinox stand out. Inside and out, the Equinox is generously well equipped. My test car was the range topping LTZ-V AWD petrol at $56,990. This gets you 19-inch alloys, LED headlights, Hands Free Tailgate and Semi-Automatic Parking. The LTZ-V contains a barrage of safety kit too. Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, are all a welcome addition to your commute. Plus, the driver’s ‘Haptic Seat’ will vibrate if a hazard in your path is detected. Inside there is a panoramic sunroof, heated/cooled front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, leather trim and Holden’s MyLink infotainment system with digital radio, sat nav and wireless phone charging. The standard Bose stereo also provides you with the closest audio experience to hearing Led Zeppelin live.
