he headline act at the free New Year’s Eve party in North Hagley Park on 31 December, the Jordan Luck Band has been entertaining Kiwi crowds for decades. As the front man and song-writer for legendary The Exponents, Jordan has had a hugely successful career with 18 Top 40 singles and countless radio hits. He and the Jordan Luck Band will share the main stage for the New Year’s Eve concert with local groove merchants Dillastrate. During their relatively short career Dillastrate, whose signature sound is a combination of current neo-soul, hip-hop, funk and electronic sounds, has impressed audiences up and down the country. Also performing on the night will be an up and coming Christchurch act Deep Water Creek and crowd favourite DJ Spinal. “If you want a fun night with family and friends singing along to great songs like Why Does Love do This to Me and Victoria then Hagley Park is the place you’re going to want to be,” says Council Events and Arts Manager Karena Finnie. The gates will open at 6pm, there will be a mock countdown to New Year’s Eve for the kids at 8pm just before the bands take to the main stage. At 11.59pm will be the real countdown and the New Year will be kicked off with a fireworks display.

he O’Reillys are a vibrant, typical, true-blue Kiwi family striving to fulfil the near impossible final request of their mum: that they sing Fauré’s Requiem at her funeral. Written by Alison Quigan, actor and current Performing Arts Manager of the Mangere Arts Centre, Mum’s Choir was based on Quigan’s experience when her own mother died in 2001. Music is a huge part of Mum’s Choir, with classic songs performed throughout the play such as After You’ve Gone, That’s Amore, Accentuate the Positive, Every Time We Say Goodbye, Hine E Hine, We’ll Meet Again and, of course, the magnificent Requiem by Fauré. “The play is about the power of family when we all come together,” says Ross Gumbley, Artistic Director at The Court and Director of Mum’s Choir. “The galvanising force in the O’Reilly family is a love of music and song; singing is a must for this family.” The exceptionally talented Eilish Moran, Paul Barrett, Lynda Milligan, Nick Dunbar, Amy Straker, Julie Edwards and Wiremu Waretini make up the Mum’s Choir cast. “Mum’s Choir is a play which touches your heart,” Ross says. “It really is a symbol of where New Zealand plays have come from – and how good they are.” Opening at The Court Theatre 15 September - 6 October 2018. Kate spearheaded the suffrage movement, which resulted in women being given the right to vote in New Zealand on 19 September 1893. A special event was held in Christchurch at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 13 September, with the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, as the keynote speaker. Proceeds from the ticketed event were given to YWCA Christchurch, to help support the organisation’s work. The YWCA Christchurch provided emergency housing and support to vulnerable women who arrived during the early settler years, a legacy which continues today, with the charity still providing emergency and transitional housing to women in need and access to health and social services. Many children stay with their mothers and the on-site team ensure they are well-fed and have transport to school. So far this year, 2500 meals have been provided to tāmariki staying at the YWCA and more than 200 breakfast and lunch making sessions have been held. Wraparound support services include guest speakers and skill-building activities to ensure their success as they move on from the facility. The charity is supported by local philanthropic funders and partners and is always on the lookout for volunteers – maybe even some future Kate Sheppards.

Local artists Sandy Gottermeyer and Svetlana Orinko are just two of the returning exhibitors. Gottermeyer’s works evoke the atmospheric pre-impressionist landscapes of Turner, while Ukranian born Orinko’s paintings have been described as visual poetic language. Amelia Davis, Marketing and Fundraising Manager of Hohepa Canterbury, says they’re thrilled that two thirds of the exhibits are from new artists. Amelia cites printmaker and mixed media artist Ben Reid, self-taught artist Philip Beadle, and sculptors Don Service and Julie Ross as just some of those whose works will be showcased for the first time. “The exhibition also supports five artists with intellectual disabilities. Peter Chou, for example, has quite a following,” Amelia says. “His works are unique in that they often give a very detailed, bird’s-eye view of landscapes and buildings.” Proceeds from the exhibition go to Hohepa’s Wellness and Community Participation Programmes. Kittens for kittens
Little Luna was barely more than a kitten when she became pregnant.
L
una was 11 months old and around two months pregnant, with a very large belly. Her owner brought her to see Ourvets Veterinarian Alice Finch because she was worried the babies might not be alive. She waddled across the exam table and flopped down behind the computer. “All of her energy was feeding the growing kittens, and not her own growth,” says Alice. “Pregnancy takes a major toll on the body – especially when the mother is very young.” Cats (and dogs) can become pregnant from as young as six months old, so at Ourvets they recommend de-sexing around five to six months of age. The process is straightforward – pets will
stay in at the clinic for the day; the vet will examine them and make sure they are fit for surgery; then the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. “Clients will often report they are ‘back to normal’ by the following day but it is very important to keep pets quiet and limit exercise after the procedure to allow for healing,” Alice says. Entire males and females are at higher risk of many cancers developing as they age. Females are also at risk of pyometra (infection of the uterus). This can be life threatening and very costly to treat. Entire males have a higher risk of prostate issues associated with high levels of hormones. Desexing eliminates many behavioural
problems – often linked with aggression (which can play a part) but problems are often related to roaming and inappropriate marking. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health, don’t hesitate to give your vet a call. Luna was put onto a high energy diet and received regular checkups to make sure she made it through her pregnancy safely. Luna will be spayed once the kittens are weaned and the kittens will only go to homes that are aware of the benefits of desexing. Both Luna and the kittens are doing very well! How did you end up working with dogs? My love affair with dogs started at a very young age. Given Scott – an unruly 45kg German shepherd – as a young boy of six, I learnt very quickly what it was like to be faced with a dog that caused havoc in your life. My grandfather was a dog trainer in the war so he helped me learn my first lessons around dogs and ignite a life-long passion to learn everything I could about them. This led me to North America to study the dog’s ancient ancestor, the wolf, alongside many of America’s great canine behaviourists. I was amazed just how many of its behaviours were exaggerated dog behaviours, or more correctly – how dogs showed toned down puppy-like wolf behaviours. I discovered a wolf isn’t a dog and, although they share 99.96 percent of their genes, they are also very different. This took me on an amazing lifelong journey to discover the evolution of the dog, its co-evolution from wolf, proto dog and pariah and how it joined our families. From there I did my Masters in Sheep Dog Behaviour and started my behaviour clinic over 40 years ago. I have loved every moment of it. If there was one thing you could teach the world about dogs, what would that be? That what you do in your puppy’s first 1-4 month formative period is critical to success; to ensure that all dog owners do the right thing at the right time when raising their pups; that they put in place the critical foundations during the pup’s formative period. The formative period is when 70-80 percent of the brain’s connectivity is wired and the time when the most important behaviours are put in place. Most importantly these include establishing
their bond with their owner, house training, ensuring generalised socialisation to all species (human, dog, chickens, cats etc) and the beginnings of the shared language that needs to be established between us. It is so important that the whole first day of the train the trainer workshop is dedicated to puppies – understanding why and how we establish these foundations and getting hands-on practicing these critical skills. This is our big idea – that we can transform dog behaviour in New Zealand in 10 years if we all do the right thing at the right time – it’s really that simple.

B
ut what’s perhaps even more impressive is that he has taught rescue dogs to drive a car and fly a plane! Metropol catches up with the dog behaviourist and author of bestselling book Dog Zen ahead of his trip to Christchurch for the region’s first ever ‘train the trainer’ session about his dogged determination to transform dog behaviour in New Zealand.
What have been some of your most powerful experiences with dogs over the years? Our TV show Purina Pound Pup to Dog Stars was a very powerful experience for me, working closely with dogs with serious psychological and physical trauma and proving both to myself and others, that even what seem like impossible cases can be resolved and can have a happy ending. The ability of dogs to recover using the right techniques and seeing them enjoy living in a loving family was a deeply moving experience. Another experience has been teaching rescue dogs to fly a plane and drive a car. Seeing the capacity of the dog’s intelligence to learn such complex and amazing things was extraordinary. And sitting in the back of a small four seater plane as my adorable German Shepherd Labrador Cross rescue dog Reggie flew was more than a little mind blowing! What do the next 12 months have in store for you? An exciting, big year ahead as we switch our focus to education through our national ‘train the trainer’ workshop series, writing a new book (watch this space) and developing new TV opportunities. Our central focus is spreading the word on our ‘big idea’ – that we really can transform dog behaviour in NZ in 10 years and prevent the 13,000 plus dog bites a year– we all just need to know what to do with our beloved pups in their formative period. Make sure you spread the word too!

Promoting Philanthropy Communities, charities and projects are the benefactors of the new Christchurch City Foundation, set up a year ago to positively impact the city. We catch up with Head of the Christchurch Foundation Amy Carter to discuss the philanthropy driving this positive outcome. How did the Christchurch Foundation story begin? The initial concept came as a legacy of the 2010/11 earthquakes. There were so many generous people living overseas or in other parts of New Zealand who gave to the Prime Minister’s and the Mayor’s funds. It
showed us that even though people no longer live in Christchurch, their hearts often still do. This means that they probably have dreams for the city and the causes within it, so we’ve built something to help them achieve these dreams.

event or asset. This is decided by the person or business giving. From time to time, the foundation will also invest in programmes or projects identified in the city as important. For example, we recently announced that we are establishing a women’s fund. Christchurch has a proud history of women and girls making change both here and globally. We thought that it was part of our city that needed to be celebrated and we have set up the fund to continue to support women and girls making change at a grassroots level within the city. We have also recently hosted our inaugural Thinker in Residence. KPMG partnered with us to bring a global leader, Hila Oren, to our city. This is an annual programme and we are already working to select the 2019 Thinker. Why are you so passionate about the work of the foundation? It is really exciting to be hands on developing an entity that will have a sustained positive impact on Christchurch. I have big aspirations for our city, as do many others. In this role, I get to help make those dreams come true.

What is the key mission and how does it do this? Our core focus is to make it easier for people to give to the causes within Christchurch that they care about. We are a donor-led organisation rather than cause-led. That means that we act on behalf of the generous person or business who wants to give, matching them to causes that share their ethics, values and desired outcomes. You don’t give to The Christchurch Foundation itself. We make it easy by offering a range of ways through which to give. This could mean a gift through a will/ bequest, payroll giving or a mixture of cash lump sums, goods and services. The Christchurch Foundation undertakes the due diligence on the cause so that donors can have confidence the money given will end up being invested in the way in which they want. We are also in the process of becoming a registered charity in locations where our generous people and businesses pay tax. There is a significant focus on helping people overseas to give here. A cause can be a charity, social enterprise, a community

he popular casual eatery and seafood restaurant in the heart of Wigram Skies has introduced free te reo Māori classes and the first event earlier this year attracted more than 600 people. “I was brought up speaking te reo Māori at home and primary school but it wasn’t until I got to high school that I realised how unusual I was,” Fush owneroperator Anton Matthews says. “It’s one of Aotearoa’s three official languages and the preservation and normalisation of it is very dear to my heart. I only speak to my children in te reo Māori and we’ve always made it a part of the Fush culture too. Now, I want to give our community a chance to learn the basics for free. “The feedback has been overwhelming,” Matthews says. “We might well have created a bit of a beast! But isn’t that so cool?” The team at FUSH had to find a bigger venue, so they booked out a local auditorium and couldn’t believe the turnout. “We had our first lesson and we were just so stoked, people are coming back for more which is just so awesome.” “We expected probably a dozen or so people to turn up, but when we put it online the feedback and demand for the lessons was overwhelming.”
FUSH is a whānau (family) owned business that opened in 2016 with the goal to sell the perfect fish and chips. Manaakitanga (the way in which you show hospitality towards your guests) is important to Anton and the team so everyone is welcomed like one of the family. The restaurant features a menu in both English and te reo Māori and table talkers with basic Māori words to encourage diners to speak Māori to each other while they wait for food. Te reo Māori in New Zealand is experiencing a renaissance with free classes across the country becoming popular with young and old people looking to reconnect with their culture or learn more about the indigenous Māori culture. Ngahiwi Apanui, the Chief Executive of Te Taura Whiri i te reo Māori (Māori Language Commission), says children are again using their language at home, in places where a 1970’s study had shown effectively no intergenerational transmission of te reo Māori was occurring. “It’s like seeing green shoots appear in a burnt-off landscape. Māori language is alive and is bursting through into new domains,” Ngahiwi says.

Talk of the There is no question the Canterbury quakes were a game-changer. They took from Christchurch an iconic identity, one it had been building and nurturing since the Canterbury Association settled the surrounding province of Canterbury and gave the city its name in 1848.

W
ith the brunt of Mother’s Nature’s force concentrated in our central business district, it was our city’s commercial heart which took the biggest hit. For many of the businesses that had made their commercial homes within the cleverly confined quadrant of Christchurch’s central city, it became survival of the fittest; a test of our innate fight or flight responses. Thankfully, for a select group of developers, that response was to fight, in a commercial capacity that is. Richard Peebles, Antony Gough, Phillip Carter, Max Bremner, Tim Glasson and Nick Hunt are just some of the city’s brave legacy leaders. Daring to dream big, they have delivered handsomely. And, on the back of their dogged determination, the central city has got its groove back.
This is perhaps best exemplified by the opening of a world-class venture by Calder Stewart that welcomed a very unique entertainment and dining experience into the CBD when it opened earlier this month. Entertainment Central (EntX) is Calder Stewart’s latest central city development and it’s one that is the talk of the town. With three levels of entertainment, we’ll get to enjoy seven cinemas and 18 eateries in the heart of the CBD. Those confirmed are Cleaver and Co, Joe’s Garage, Two Fat Indians, Infinito, Habitual Fix, Hanoi Old Quarter, Leemo, Nando’s, Nourish Pod, Ottoman Turkish Kebabs, Shanghai Dumplings, Roll and Bowl, and Pad Thai Pan. Under construction for a year and a half between Colombo, Lichfield and Tuam Streets, the $50 million new Hoyts EntX multiplex replaces the eight-screen Moorhouse Ave complex which the cinema chain lost in the earthquakes. A first for New Zealand, the development incorporates more than 900 electric reclining seats across seven luxury cinemas – two extreme screens with Dolby surround take cinema to an exhilarating new level. It will be the company’s third multiplex in Christchurch and 11th in New Zealand, and the second in the country with large “xtremescreens”, recliner seats and incinema dining. The opening will bring the number of movie screens in the city to 39. Since the earthquakes the only central city cinema has been the boutique two-screen Alice Cinematique with 74 seats. The Arts Centre plans to open a double-screen arthouse cinema next year. The development is expected to play an important role in the central city’s reinvigoration. The population of the central city is currently a third lower than before the earthquakes, with the New Zealand Property Council calling the council’s target of 20,000 residents by 2024 unrealistic in a recent report. However, a Christchurch City Council committee is considering a newly announced three-year plan aimed at accelerating the repopulation of the space. Labelled ‘Project 8011’ after the central city postcode and the estimated number of homes needed to house the 20,000 people, it recommends boosting resident numbers through more housing options, through development incentives including low equity loans, rebates on development contributions and investment from the NZ Super Fund. But in the meantime, developments such as EntX are heading in the right direction to draw the people in.

IT’S AN UPRISING! Some clever cookies are transforming an old brewery near the CBD into a state of the art climbing venue. Sefton Priestley and Vaughan Jones are already business partners in Uprising Boulder Gym – the city’s only facility dedicated to bouldering, a discipline of climbing making its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020. Covering a massive 1250 square metres, their new venture at the old Harrington’s brewery site on Ferry Rd will be a climbing, yoga and adventure exercise mecca. www.bouldering.co.nz
Christchurch based creative, Shannon Thompson introduced her fashion label, Out Of Comfort, to the world stage earlier this month, at Vancouver Fashion Week. What comes as even more impressive than this young designer’s talent, is the story of support and how this trip has become a reality. I enjoy being involved in their special day.” Now she’s taken the formerly home-based business to the next level, with a beautiful store in Hanmer Springs’ new Boulder Point Precinct. Known as Mickey Raes, the store stocks everything from wedding accessories, through to craft, sewing and knitting supplies, fabrics and haberdashery, along with a carefully curated range of eco-friendly pet products and toys. Pet beds made from recycled bottle fibre are a hit for the store, which is the exclusive South Island supplier and wedding accessories range from car ribbons and flower arrangements to horseshoes and garters.

The bigger, the better By Kayte John
CHRISTOPHER ESBER MBFWA18 PHOTO BY TIM DA-RIN FOR FLAUNTER
Forget skinny jeans, bodycon dresses and slim-fit shirts: baggy style is back! Oversized clothes allow movement and are extremely comfy, but they can also be a little intimidating if you’re unsure about what to wear with them. Here’s how to let loose this season with spring’s trend, which is quite literally, big!
F
irstly, don’t shy away from picking oversized pieces from top to bottom. Whether it’s a hair piece, or statement hat, start the look strong and finish it off with a pair of baggy denims, making your legs look loose and relaxed. Another opportunity for women to go big is large shoulder pads and earrings that brush the collarbone. It may sound a little eighties, but it’s a look that’s making a dramatic return. When you’re tired, or feeling self-conscious, it may be a little cliché to throw on that boyfriend sweater, chunky knit or sack dress that you can disappear into. We know these pieces are completely necessary, but don’t hide in them; wear
them with pride and transmit an air of sartorial confidence. Oversized sack dresses are aesthetically pleasing and they’re wonderfully unfussy, but sometimes they can make you look a little shapeless and too baggy. If you’re worried that the dress might look like it has swallowed you whole, simply cinching it in at the waist with a belt can elongate your silhouette. For a more subtle approach to the oversized trend, start with accessories. Think chunky bracelets, bold necklaces, eye-catching rings, bulky bags. Don’t hesitate to give these looks a try; they may leave you pleasantly surprised.

hile frills and ruffles are not new by any stretch of the imagination, having made their fashionable appearance since the 16th century, this seasonal style staple is seeing a serious resurgence in popularity. According to Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, we’re embracing ‘maximalism’ this year and maximalism is all about the ‘more is more’ motto. Ruffles fall effortlessly into this aesthetic, with the dramatic twist they bring to any look. Ruffles and Elizabethan collars make the perfect partnership. For a more laid-back look, pair a casual ruffled top with jeans, straight-legged pants or shorts. Meanwhile, a floaty high-low skirt or maxi will cross the seasonal divide from spring to summer. So why not take the opportunity to get a frill out of your wardrobe – on your top, swimsuit, blouse, pants, or even on your jacket.

A model citizen
It is a fabulous double as Christchurch’s premier agency and modelling school, Portfolio Models, celebrates its 25th birthday, plus Director Mel Radford-Brown completes a quarter century in the modelling industry, having signed as a ‘new face’ to Portfolio when it first opened in 1993!
M
el is passionate about the Portfolio legacy, taking the business from strength to strength and is excited about the great things to come. “It’s been a remarkable journey and, as a result, the agency is hugely special to me, particularly the Christchurch market where I am still working with key clients/brands and models who used to work with me during my busy modelling days; those models are now signed with me at Portfolio,” she says. “My relationships are built on professional reputation, experience and longevity.” Mel’s experiences in the industry have given her thorough insider knowledge: she modelled in Christchurch and worked in London as a model and model booker, before returning to New Zealand and purchasing Portfolio in her early 30s. “I have a very strong work ethic and extremely high standards,” she says. “I really love to see people flourish and to develop their ‘star factor’. I am there to enable, empower and encourage my team, to drive them to succeed.” Mel especially loves working with teens entering the industry, which takes commitment, time and energy from both parties. She feels Portfolio has developed under her ownership. The calibre of the models and talent continues to skyrocket, reflecting positively on the company and its success. “The models and talent are hugely instrumental to the success of our agency,” Mel says. “With my expertise and experience, the skills of my booker Rebecca and hard work from our models, I feel we have a very successful formula.” Mel herself has grown as a business owner and industry leader, and is always focused on where she needs to drive the brand within the New Zealand market. The future looks bright with her at the helm. “I want to continuously challenge myself, my staff and our models. I have a very strong desire to continue to shape Portfolio to be consistently the best within the industry.”

OPENYOUR EYESTO THE POSSIBILITIES 2. ULTHERA (HIFU)
There is a growing demand for safe and effective treatments to help maintain a youthful appearance that fit in with a busy work and social calendar.
T
he area around the eye is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing with fine lines and wrinkles and loose, sagging skin. Here are some safe and non-invasive treatment options available to treat this area.
1.
3.
RADIOFREQUENCY (RF)
RF is an effective way to safely deliver energy into the skin, independent of skin colour. The energy flow causes a build-up of heat which induces an immediate contraction of the collagen (an ‘instant lift’) and stimulates a natural wound-healing response, leading to a long-lasting lift of the skin. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic uses a skin tightening treatment that combines RF skin needling (called Intensif) with RF fractional skin resurfacing (called FSR) and a course of treatments is recommended. This leaves the skin around the eye looking smoother and tighter with a lift of the upper eyelid to reveal a more open eye!
4.
HIFU is high intensity focused ultrasound that delivers energy into the tissue below the skin to cause tissue tightening at a deeper level than RF. Only one treatment is needed and it is FDA approved. It also causes the area around the eye to look smoother and tighter with a lift to the upper eyelid and a reduction of under-eye bags.
BOTULINUM TOXIN
Botulinum Toxin works by causing the muscles above the eyebrows and around the eyes to relax which makes the eyes open up. There are needles involved but there should be very little pain and no down-time! Results can take a few days after the injections are done to work and should last about four months.
DERMAL FILLER
Dermal filler is made of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance). It can be used to lift the eyebrows. It can also smooth and fill out the under eye tear trough area. Once again needles are involved and results should last anywhere from 12 months to a couple of years. All injectable treatments at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic are done by Dr Brigid Lee who is a member of the NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine.

Return To Retro By Kayte John
If you’re a fashion follower, you will know that as ephemeral as trends are, they have a way of coming back. The next season’s fashion trends are heavily influenced by the styles of the past, right back to the seventies. You don’t need to have lived through this era to know that this was a bold and colourful decade. We return to retro and take a look at six retro fashion styles making their way back into our wardrobes. A. AFC DESIGNERS ABROAD NYC - PARED EYEWEAR B. COUNTRY ROAD HIBISCUS PRINT CULOTTE C. ‘Mom’ jeans – denim is major this season. Forget skinny jeans though as it’s all about slouchy boyfriend jeans and high-waisted ‘mom’ jeans with loose fits. Pair your denim with a crop top or statement t-shirt for an all-out retro look.
Embroidery – embrace the embroidery because it’s basically been around forever! In recent seasons, it’s been increasingly popular on jeans and boots. However, embroidery is a key trend for spring 2018 and can be found on blouses, jumpers, dresses, jackets and accessories with bold, confident designs.
Bare shoulders – think Julia Roberts in that red cocktail dress in Pretty Woman. This retro trend has come back with a vengeance, especially for the summer season. Dresses and blouses that allow for bare shoulders are feminine and flattering – from the clingy offthe-shoulder dress to the looser blouse styles, this iconic style can be tailored to your own taste.
Basket bag – a key piece this season is the famous Jane Birkin basket bag. In the seventies it was a permanent fixture on the English actress’s arm and thought of by many as a way to achieve effortless French glamour. The basket bag is a key piece for spring and summer, adding a cool, retro vibe to any outfit.
The empire waist – it just doesn’t get any better or more flattering than wearing a dress that cinches in the waist to accentuate your curves. While the empire waist dresses of the seventies were more conservative, the same look of today overshadows that dowdy feeling as it’s added to slit dresses, pencil skirts and a-line skirts.

Bell sleeves – it’s no wonder they’re back in fashion; the look of bell sleeves is elegant and very feminine. This season, you can find bell sleeves on sweaters, dresses and blouses, creating a little drama at the end of your arms.

“O
Creating happy hair Vibrant and fun is the flavour of Mondo Black hairdressing salon in Edgeware. There’s always great conversation, and the team of four make a point of knowing every client, not just their own.
ur salon’s favourite thing is to make people happy just being here and then popping out the door with a transformation they love, a stunning special occasion hair-up, or a perfect refresh of their signature style,” says Manager Alesha Brehaut. Alesha and fellow stylists Alana Jackson, Sheree Rosewarne and Janine Petrie love what they do and are experts on the in-house product range NAK, which is designed especially for Australasian conditions. They have a great eye for what will and won’t suit a client and, if a client brings in a picture that isn’t quite right, they can suggest gentle adjustments to ensure it is perfect. Passionate about up-dos, the team has completed many a look for Cup and Show Week, including Fashion in the Field prize winners. Understanding that getting set for the party season can be expensive, Mondo Black offers the ideal solution of layby, first payment on the day of your style, then pay it off over the coming weeks. Mondo Black’s Facebook page is a popular watch for up and coming trends. Last season’s copper tones are starting to be replaced with different tones for the warmer seasons ahead Alesha says. Open Tuesday to Thursday 9am-8pm and Friday and Saturday 9am-5pm, there is generous parking at the door.

e is already providing his patients with the finest quality handmade dentures that are comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing and those patients are very happy with his work. Tom studied and worked at the University of Otago’s Faculty of Dentistry in Dunedin for more than 10 years. He led various departments in removable prosthetics, including partial dentures, full dentures, implant supported prosthetics and orthodontic appliances. His additional few years working at a private clinic in Christchurch prior to joining the Merivale team, support his extensive and wide array of experiences from complex and highly specialised hospital cases, to conventional dentures and prosthetics. “For me, spending a good amount of time with each patient before starting the treatment is crucial. This allows me to make a thorough and comprehensive diagnosis to identify the needs and requirements necessary to produce the highest quality dentures. Dentures aren’t something you can pick off the shelves and away you go. They are oral prosthetics. They should be designed to the specific conditions of each patient’s mouth to adequately restore essential functions such as speech, and the abilities to eat and smile, which a lot of us take for granted.” To book a complimentary, obligation-free consultation, phone 03 355 4704.

Effective Concussion Treatment
Concussion is a serious injury and occurs frequently. According to ACC statistics, there are about 35,000 head injuries in New Zealand each year. Despite the fact that we seem to hear about concussion happening mostly on the sports field, actually only 21 percent of all head injuries in this country are sustained through sport-related injury.

T
oday there is an increased awareness and understanding of what a concussion is and that the impact of the injury may be either immediate or delayed. People who have suffered a head knock can potentially suffer anxiety, depression and make poor decisions either immediately or years on from the initial trauma. The good news though, according to Gill Redden, a specialist concussion practitioner, is that concussion, even an old concussion, is treatable. “Any amount of force will impact the head,” Gill explains. “This causes the head bones to jam up and the membranes surrounding and protecting the brain to twist and tighten to try to accommodate these jammed bones. What I do is physically unjam or free up the head bones through quiet, gentle manipulation. “This is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment called CranioSacral therapy, a technique which came into its own in the 1970s and which is extremely effective.” Gill takes a full body treatment approach when treating a concussion, helping to align the body, the neck and various organs to release compression and to allow uninterrupted flow. If you think you may be suffering from a concussion and would like to find out more about how Gill treats people, phone 03 365 7801.

Changing A prostate cancer treatment We’re nearing the end of Blue September, the month to raise awareness of prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer in men in New Zealand but fortunately, when detected early, prostate cancer has an excellent cure rate.
1. Small nodes like this are usually normal on CT.
PSMA (prostate specific membrane antigen) study is an imaging test that determines the position and extent of prostate cancer. Pacific Radiology uses Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and low dose computed tomography (CT) imaging, in conjunction with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR), to help doctors assess the staging of prostate cancer treatment. Pacific Radiology radiologist Dr Justin Hegarty specialises in interpreting the PSMA and MR images. “We are starting to rely more on imaging to help diagnose as well as guide treatment options,” Justin says. “Recent studies show that PSMA imaging often changes the type of treatment that a patient receives – for example, someone who before would have been treated with a prostatectomy might now be better treated with radiotherapy.” Prostate tumours as small as 2-3mm can be identified. “The clarity of the imaging ensures that patients are able to choose a treatment pathway that best suits them and that allows them the best possible outcome.”
2. PSMA is present in the node, and we can now confidently predict it contains metastatic prostate cancer.
Supportive breast screening a patient’s perspective
A
few weeks ago I had my routine mammogram which is usually very uneventful. I was told at the end of the procedure that I would receive a letter in a couple of weeks if everything was okay. Then sometime later I was called to come back for more investigations. It caught me by surprise. I’ve got a friend with Stage 4 breast cancer at the moment so I immediately started worrying about what might be going on. On my return visit, I saw the screening mammogram from a few weeks before. The images showed some little white dots of calcium that the specialists were concerned about. I was told I would have some more mammograms looking at that area in detail and also have an ultrasound with the radiologist. During the ultrasound, the radiologist said to me that she couldn’t see anything that looked definitely worrying, but they wanted to be sure. That’s why I was to have a biopsy in the afternoon. The trickiest thing about the biopsy was getting into position and staying completely still for a very long period. The procedure itself wasn’t too bad. The whole way through the biopsy there was a woman, Debbie, holding my arm to help me keep still, but also giving me support. Because I didn’t have a support person there, I really appreciated Debbie’s presence. There was also clear communication the whole way through and a real sense that they were being honest with me at each step. In the circumstances, the entire process was a positive experience. They phoned me when the results came through and thankfully the biopsy was benign. For more information visit www.pacificradiology.com Metropol September 27, 2018 43

uilters Quarters stocks some 4,000 bolts of fabric, including the classic and timeless Liberty of London and top international brands such as Stof Fabrics, Moda, Tula Pink, French General and Kaffe Fassett. “We

A recent addition is an excellent and increasing selection of woollen yarns, and knitting and embroidering supplies. “We pride ourselves on being the go-to one-stop-shop, where everything to do with handicrafts can be found under one roof, including sewing machines,” Pauline says. “We are agents for Elna, Husqvarna and Janome, and we’re very fortunate that we have an excellent mechanic available for servicing sewing machine repairs.” For those wishing to upskill their crafts, or for those who have a desire to learn, but have had little or no experience, Quilters Quarters has a bright and spacious classroom in store, from which they run classes and workshops that coincide with the regular four term school year. looks to love By Kayte John
Glancing at wedding dress trends for 2019, it’s clear that saying ‘yes to the dress’ doesn’t have to be a hunt for indiscernible white gowns. If you’re planning your big moment and wanting something unique and fashion forward, then look no further as we take you through five standout styles that have caught our eye for next’s year nuptials.
1. 2.
The Markel effect We’re already seeing Megan Markel’s effect on the fashion world and now it’s taken over the bridal world. The Royal wedding’s influence is apparent in many styles which showcase glittering tiaras, regal elegance, capes, high-neck gowns and oh-so simple cuts. Markle’s modern look has inspired many major bridal designers. Expect to see a lot of minimalistic gowns that mimic her effortlessness, like breaths of fresh air. For a simple cut dress, consider a tiara to complete that imperial look. They may have once been dubbed as dated, but thanks to Megan Markel and Kate Middleton, they have made a comeback. These women proved that tiaras can look beautiful if done in a delicate way. Lavender to blue Many bridal designers have ditched the traditional white dress by adding a little colour to their latest collections. We are seeing hints of lavenders and soft shades of baby-blues that are sweetly reminiscent of Cinderella. Princess ball gowns with pastel colours are incredibly popular for 2019 and many of them are adorned with beautiful floral appliqués, which will leave any bride feeling pretty.

3. 4. 5.
Oversized bows It’s a classically romantic motif that bridal designers turn to again and again. We’re talking about the bow, but now it’s back and bigger than ever as it has become a focal point rather than a finishing accessory. Oversized bows have also taken on a sculptural shape and take pride along necklines, low backs, or clinching in the waist to create a flattering point. Suit up Dare to be different? One of the latest trends is a tailored suit, or bridal jumpsuit. It may seem less extravagant, but a suit is no longer just for courthouse weddings as brides are opting for a modern and chic look. This trend also allows the bride to be more comfortable, allowing freedom to cut loose on the dance floor and celebrate her big day. So, if you’re simply more of a pants girl, a bridal suit might be just the thing for you, or even your bridesmaids. Marvellous metallic Glinting metallics and sparkling sequins are another trend ruling the runways. They make a bold statement for a bride who is all about glitz and glamour. Popular metallic hues include gold, copper, champagne and rose gold. However, silver seems to be the metallic of choice. Paired with romantic silhouettes, the silver fabric creates a glamorous feel that will make your guests swoon on your big day.
Churchill once said, “I didn’t have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one”.
I
t’s an enduring conundrum: how to say something compelling, quickly, particularly for those of us who have had to scribe some wedding day words. If you’re getting tongue tied ahead of tying the knot, here are our top tips for those everelusive vows.
A new chapter If someone special has bequeathed you jewellery that means so much, but just doesn’t suit, Via Sollertia has a brilliant solution – remodelling – to get the piece out of the drawer and onto you.
Via Sollertia 11 New Regent Street Christchurch Ph 366 8001 www.viasollertia.co.nz
ewellery designer Clare establishes the style of jewellery you like, be it classic, modern, art deco, or art nouveau. “Browse pieces in store and in the catalogue and see what jumps out,” she says. “We’ll work with what you’ve got, re-using the stones and metal on site to create something completely personal.” The design process often sees people add to the components and Clare draws the design for you to take away and keep. Wedding and engagement rings are being modernised and reworked too. “Re-modelling is my favourite thing to do,” Clare says. “It’s so special, creating something with huge history that people will actually wear and love, bringing a new chapter to the life of the jewel.”
1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
Set the tone: Just as you’d want to coordinate the style of your invites with your decorations; your gown with your shoes; your hair with your makeup, you need to agree a tone for your vows with your significant other. Get to the point: It’s hard to imagine that on the most important day of your life, people’s attention may wander away from you. Be that as it may, keeping your vows clear and concise, and no more than a couple of minutes in length, will make for an endearing and engaging exchange. Be inspired: This may seem like we are going against all our journalistic ethics, and it is, but if you’re really struggling to wax lyrical about your loved one, then by all means, let Google be your inspiration.
Consult your officiant: This is often an afterthought, but it’s actually important, particularly if you are marrying in a church or observe a religion and there are some mandatory inclusions. Practice makes perfect: While most don’t commit their vows to memory – there’s enough to remember on the day as it is – repetition is your best friend when it comes to your vows. Coffee Craft By Tracey Edwardes
An Ethiopian goat herder noticed his flock became rather rambunctious and frisky after nibbling from a tree of coffee cherries – and so goes the origin of coffee. Another belief is a healer roasted raw beans to remove bitterness and voila! Next came the Ottoman empire and Indian Spice Traders, then once Europe got a whiff of its energising powers, our caffeinated civilisation was hooked.
he Coffee Monster, aka Chris Meyer of Black and White Coffee Cartel, at 150 Lichfield Street, has been enlightening groups of intrigued caffeine fiends on the ‘hows and wows’ of coffee, in an aromatic journey from plant to cup dubbed The Coffee Appreciation Project. The main beans are Robusta and Arabica. The best, ripest cherries of the latter are hand-picked only from mountainous slopes of the equatorial belt. However, there are some 48 coffee-producing countries. The micro roaster, a rather Jules Verne-esque beast, was demonstrated. The aroma was dewy grass, which became caramelised straw. Each small-batch roast goes through an endothermic process, when raw beans absorb heat, then an exothermic process, releasing heat. Airflow, temperature, speed and timing culminate in perfection, via bells and whistles for Africa, and an astute roast master. Italians gave us our espresso machines, which require a super skilled human to extract the elixir just so. Other interesting means were demonstrated, such as the Cold Drip, a 7-12 hour process in a science lab-like vessel, creating the most sultry, smooth liquor. Interestingly, we learnt the Swiss water process decaffeinates naturally without chemicals, retaining its full flavour - a secret weapon of the coffee obsessed in the late afternoon.

Where did your passion for food come from? Look I’m not really sure. My mother was a pretty bog standard cook, however growing up on a farm we always ate very well. The protein that anchored our diet was sheep meat… lamb, hogget, mutton and all the delicious offal that accompanied the prime cuts. We always had a decent sized vegetable garden, so grew most of the greens and tubers that we consumed. Personally, like many kids, it was baking that got me interested in the joys of cooking and eating. Born with a very active sweet tooth and with no dairy down the road, I soon realised it was a DIY situation if I was to satisfy those sugar cravings. However once I grew up and left school, it was fairly apparent when I set off on my OE, that it was hospitality and becoming proficient in kitchens that were my early career goals. Why do you think the country has connected with you and what you do? I guess people connect with me in a way that they sort of see themselves embracing or singing off the same song sheet that I do. Authenticity, informality and nostalgia play a big role in what I believe in or attempt to portray. I genuinely feel a huge sense of pride in being able to call New Zealand home. Like so many others, I don’t think the significance of this can be underestimated. We are all just so darn lucky. You’ve been busy with the Garden to Table programme, how important is this to you and why did you choose to become involved? From the first visit of a decile 2 school that had incorporated the Garden To Table programme into their curriculum, they had me. It’s an extraordinary programme on so many levels and I feel fortunate to be involved in a small way. Connecting the dots and understanding the full circle of food, is incredibly powerful. To plant, to grow, to harvest, to prepare, to cook then to share the spoils around a table is simply priceless. Learning in a non traditional setting often gives the kids that struggle in the classroom environment an opportunity to shine. Self esteem and personal worth are other
attributes from the programme that also help empower the children. What is the winning recipe for a great dining establishment? The offering (food and beverage) has to always be on point, however personally I believe the real reason that an establishment is successful, as often is the case in any business, is that it comes down to the people. Creating a fun-filled culture with hard working values, kindness and generosity of spirit at its core, is what it is all about. Great staff attract great customers. How does a day in the life of Al Brown look these days? • 6:30am walk ‘Sir Ed’ my Jack Russel for an hour • Two slices of toasted Vogels with tomato, sea salt and cracked pepper along with a mug of instant Red Ribbon Roast to start the day • Staff catch-up • Writing menus for various events • Best Ugly Bagel business • Tennis lesson or a hit every second or third afternoon • Write speech for impending speaking engagement • 6:30pm work the floor for a couple of hours at Depot or Fed Deli • Hopefully home by 9pm for family time, before hitting the hay. What’s the most fulfilling aspect of what you do? I really enjoy the collaboration aspect of what I do. If you surround yourself with a bunch of clever folk that bring different skill sets to the table, you can achieve a hell of a lot. Also winning with a bunch of like minded people is a lot more fun than winning by yourself. What does the next 12 months have in store for you? Plenty of interesting events dotted throughout the calender. I’ll continue to work on and support Depot and The Federal Deli, while we are also opening two more Best Ugly Bagel outlets. Besides that and with a bit of luck, I will be aiming to squeeze in as many days fishing as possible!

In the Bramleys Road showroom, Brendon Rowe-Mitchell opens the door of one oven to reveal a digital control panel, a striking contrast against the mid-century aesthetic of its exterior. it down in summer. Serious cooks love the graduated hob top. Rather than changing temperature dials, the difference between simmering and boiling is the pot’s positioning on the stove top. The 60mm is the baby of the range, designed to fit a standard oven space. It features two ovens and a graduated cast iron hob top. As the size increases, so too do your options. and an innovative, sustainable, on-trend product. The winner receives a package worth more than $95,000, but the biggie is the business acceleration package which includes the chance to set up a Canterbury manufacturing base and guaranteed placement of the winning product in New World supermarkets across the South Island. Canterbury is a hot-bed of opportunity and business innovation, offering the perfect HQ for a high growth food and beverage entrepreneur’s bold ambitions. Foodstuffs South Island CEO, Steve Anderson says FoodStarter provides the opportunity for someone to bring an exciting new product to market. “Winning products are not just born from big companies – innovative entrepreneurs and small businesses often disrupt the norm by creating products which have major success. “What often holds them back is the inability to access the right expertise and inroads into the Foodstuffs co-operative’s distribution channels.” Entries close on 7 October with the search culminating in the Pressure Cooker event – a dragon’s den style selection process where the top five entrants will present to a panel of experts in hope of securing the top prize on October 31. Breathtaking in its ornate furnishing and classic styling, the Palm Lounge is lush and rich. Breakfast is served here by the wonderful hosts, Jade and Jay, who also doubles as chef de cuisine. With leather couches to recline in and have a beverage or two, and a kitchen/servery which plays host to just a few sumptuous morsels in the cookie jar, it’s not really a hotel but a place that feels more like the home of someone incredibly rich who just happens to be letting you use it. The homestead has a rich history, from the Boult Suite named after Philip Burbage Boult, who was granted the land in 1876, to the Firth Suite, the beautiful room I resided in, named after Horatio Nelson Firth, whose family lived here between 1889 and 1901. With its proximity to town there’s no need to stress about travel time to one of the stunning restaurants; the prestigious Rata is only a leisurely five-minute walk. Located at 68 Ballarat Street, just a hop skip and a jump from central Queenstown, it’s the perfect location to explore Queenstown but also to host an engagement, wedding or function. hile we continually seek to de-stress outside of the home – taking a walk, heading to the gym or joining a yoga class – leaving the house is not actually integral to feeling happier and lighter. Why not make a sanctuary of calm right at home? The Dulux Colour Forecast has just been released for 2019 offering tonal, saturated and contrasting palettes to nurture, recharge and empower. In recognition of colour’s powerful ability to dramatically transform a space and help create a specific vibe, we’ve taken the opportunity to look at the most calming options on the colour wheel. When it comes to relaxing colours, blue has the power to calm your mind, slow down your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and reduce anxiety. Symbolising nature, green is one of the most restful and quiet colours, helping you stay calm and refreshed. Pink is another colour that promotes tranquillity and peace, with the rules of Feng Shui deeming this talented tone as capable of soothing competing energies within a space. White symbolises tranquility and freshness, giving clarity of thought in times of stress. With the capacity to bring balance and inner peace, violet signifies peace and wisdom. While at face value, grey can be considered dull, it’s actually very soothing, making the perfect partnership with blue tones. To learn more about Dulux’s 2019 Colour Forecast visit www.dulux.co.nz.
What is it?
Culture, What Is It? At its best or most vital, I think of culture as a heartbeat, a pulse, providing purpose and substance for the people comprising the group. I imagine a massive tapestry where every person has contributed to the pattern, leaving a distinct impression, and that all of this creates something tangible and recognisable for others wanting to be part of that culture. We are all influenced by culture. In the sporting arena, culture is easily evident in the polarized world of winning and losing. A great team will often demonstrate a strong culture enhanced by equally strong leadership – our national rugby team comes to mind – whilst a team that is struggling to win or even connect will have nothing binding the players together. Perhaps it’s due to a preference for individual game plans and personal glory rather than teamwork based on shared success. Business is no different. Cultures within workplaces are critical in establishing values and beliefs, shared traditions and an identity. When this goes well it looks like a picture of personal responsibility combined with collective success,
feelings of being valued and the absence of a sense of entitlement. In an industry like real estate, collective group success can sometimes get replaced by more individualized pursuits and leadership becomes an essential element in ensuring the culture isn’t altered because of this. Obvious success can be a sign that a culture is robust, but it’s what sits under the success that really needs identifying … Preparation and training – this means knowing what the goal is, having the right tools and being supported in your journey. ‘Caring about the person next to you’ – it seems obvious, but for some individuals this is really hard and it’s not on their radar, but it needs to be if the culture you are striving for is about lifting everyone and not just the chosen few. Having standards and values – ‘this is how we do it’, then doing it proudly and to the absolute best possible levels. Remember these levels won’t stand still. They have to be continually reviewed and improved on. Culture benefits from being dynamic, the opposite would mean stagnation.
Recently a friend told me their business owner had made a decision that after 20 years of creating a strong drinking culture, he wanted this to change. It was certainly a groundbreaking moment and no doubt the culture, if it’s got more to it than socializing, will move forward despite a habit established over many years. Finally, leadership. Captains in sport and industry need to lead. First out onto the paddock. First into the office. Comfortable with the pressure (and there is always pressure) and uncomfortable with the status quo. So, there you have it. A tiny snapshot of what culture can mean. But the story needs one more question: what are you as an individual doing for the culture of the group or groups you belong to? Are you adding to its pulse or tapestry, or taking from it? Life is made better when you add.

The Gold Treatment By Kayte John
Many of us know the story about King Midas, who is remembered in Greek mythology for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold. As the story goes, Midas got a little carried away and soon came to realise the concept that maybe ‘less is more’.

lash forward four thousand years and Midas could have taken a leaf out of the golden touch trend which is increasingly making its way into people’s homes. From faucets to frames, gold accents can add touches of elegance into your decor and can really help liven up a simple interior design. Gold is a colour that gives a luxurious feel to any area where it is being added. For instance, take the bathroom. It’s a great hue to create a rich feel in a compact space. Rather than playing it safe, we are seeing a surge for gold taps, and simply washing our hands of the traditional chrome taps. We are also seeing brass, rose gold and matte black fittings, as people are daring to be brave by giving bathrooms a touch of personality. Sinks and even bath tubs are also going for gold in today’s modern bathrooms, which is ideal for making a bold statement. Gold accents can also be added to light fittings, draw handles, tiles, or simply a gold frame on a mirror can bestow the luxe look in the bathroom.

Covetable outdoor spaces When thinking about landscaping specialists, the team at Artworks Landscape Ltd should spring to mind. They have been creating in Canterbury for more than 30 years – the team knows their business, and they love what they do.
eing resourceful and adaptable is the key,” says Ross Marriott, who started the company. “Our clients’ needs all differ – and we work on small courtyard projects, that require intimacy and privacy, right through to the grand projects incorporating swimming pools, outside kitchens, lounging areas, large paved areas and technical planted areas.” The outside of a home is an extension of who the homeowner is, and what they like to see and do. “The first and most important ingredient is good design; one that fits and functions well with your lifestyle, creates spaces that look amazing when you are in them and can be appreciated from inside the home as well.” There are so many influences on today’s new designs, and people are investing in what complements their home and allows them to enjoy their outdoor space throughout the entire year. Artworks Landscapes’ lead designer, Luke Robertson, is a seasoned professional with extensive horticultural knowledge. He enjoys the challenge of creating small, intimate areas, through to the thrill of seeing a grand masterpiece come to fruition. “We invite clients to come and visit our award winning show garden in Prestons Road during weekdays, or to check out and enquire about us working with you via our website, www.artworkslandscape.co.nz,” Ross says. Artworks Landscape Ltd is Canterbury’s design and build landscaping expert.

The height of sophistication Indulge in the height of sophistication, the freedom of outdoor entertaining and relaxing in style to your own schedule.
S
pring is upon us and with the promise of long summer evenings on the horizon, now is the perfect time to plan on creating an exterior space that will enhance your outdoor festivities. A louvered roof is an innovative patio/deck cover that, with just the touch of a button, transforms your environment and lets you extend your living space into the great outdoors. Entertaining at home has never been easier and Canterbury-based Louvre Solutions, owned and operated by Craig Rogers, knows how to create the perfect outdoor space. Whether entertaining or relaxing, they complete your outdoor environment. The louvres move at your command to allow full sunshine, to filter shade or to provide solid rain protection. Louvre Solutions’ louvre systems are manufactured with quality elements, precision engineering and aesthetic options to realise your vision of the ultimate outdoor space. The patio louvre system is strong and conforms to nearly all wind and snow load requirements. The louvres integrate flawlessly into
any architectural style. Louvre Solutions manufactures its louvres from extruded aluminium which offers greater durability than traditional patio covers. Unlike plastic or fabric, these components will outperform in heat and rain. “When we started out, these premium products were prohibitively expensive, reserved for the elite. While the quality of the products has never faltered, we have been able to make them accessible to a wider market and work with a number of clients ranging from entry level properties through to very high-spec homes,” Craig explains. The benefits of a louvre roof are many, ranging from aesthetic to practical. They are a brilliant addition to homes and can be proactively planned as part of the design/build process or can be retrofitted once the need is identified post construction. “Following the earthquakes, there has been a significant shift to subdivisions where there is generally no established exterior cover. Houses are exposed and owners try to manage environmental
conditions and the impact they have on their homes through other means, with often poor results. We collaborated with engineers to come up with the ideal system to mitigate these challenges and a louvre roof proved to be the ultimate solution.” With more than ten years in the industry, Louvre Solutions’ reputation has been built on a solid foundation. Craig and his team pride themselves on their burgeoning portfolio of repeat and referred business generated through word of mouth, independent builders, architects, landscape architects and building companies, all of whom recommend the company to potential clients. Louvre Solutions manufactures its products at its Canterbury-based factory. A louvre roof can be ready for installation within four to six weeks, making today the perfect time to order yours to ensure maximum summer enjoyment. Retaining Character Transforming character homes into homes suitable for 21st century lifestyles takes both building expertise and empathy for the features of the original house.
“I
t actually takes what I call a building brain,” says Grant Irving of G.I. Builders Ltd. “That’s something you develop over years of experience in doing a variety of work from building different types of new homes to renovating older ones.” Grant and his wife Kelly used their combined building brain to totally renovate their own character home in St Albans. “It was a small weatherboard house that was built back to front and not orientated for the sun. We stripped the whole place back to the framing, added extra rooms for our business and created open plan living out of a series of previously poky rooms. “Now we have a wonderfully warm and functional house that still retains the character we loved about it when we first purchased it, but which has been brought right-up to date with all the facilities and technology we all expect in a home of today.”
Grant and Kelly emphasise that for a character home renovation project it is vitally important to engage the service of an architect who really understands character homes and what is required to modernise them successfully. “The project then becomes a collaborative effort between the builder and the architect to achieve the very best result.” It is well known that many older houses in New Zealand lack insulation and can be cold and dark. “That was a fundamental aspect we addressed in our renovation with insulation in the floor, ceilings and internal walls, as well as double glazing and giving the house good indoor/ outdoor flow with massive French doors off the living area out to a large kwila deck. Modern living is all about warmth and spacial flow and that is what we have created.” Keeping what is unique and distinctive about a character home requires an eye for detail and that is an attribute that G. I
Builders prides itself on. “You tend to use a lot more solid wood in a character home renovation. You also need to think about the style of skirtings, feature fireplaces and staircases. You do not want to end up with a bland modern house that has no distinguishing elements.” To this end Kelly brought her interior design expertise to the project using anaglypta-style wallpapers to enhance the heritage retro look as well as metal and stainless steel for the staircase and kitchen bench tops. “We spent a good deal of time on finishes and giving the house a real point of difference and personality.” Grant and Kelly’s beautifully renovated house is now for sale. “We don’t want to move. We have our dream home now and the area is quiet and attractive. But we need to be in the right zone for our children’s secondary education.” Should you wish to view the house you can contact Fiona Nankivell, Harcourts Holmwood - 0272 282 706.

Exceptional outdoor furniture
When Jodi Gauci couldn’t find what she was looking for to furnish her outdoor area, she decided to design, manufacture and import it herself.
“I
was searching for nice outdoor furniture that was good quality but not super expensive, so I ended up sourcing my own,” she says. “Then friends saw it and loved it, and word spread.” And so, The Crowded House Furniture Company was born. Specialising in outdoor lounges, lounge suites, dining suites and pool lounges, as well as storage boxes and cushions, Jodi has been importing directly from the same trusted manufacturer for the past seven years. “The furniture is very durable and made of UV resistant poly-rattan, so it withstands harsh conditions well – you can leave it outside all year round.” The furniture arrives pre-assembled and customers can buy from the website or call Jodi to arrange a viewing. CBD Anchor Projects By Harcourts Gold Consultant Mark O’Loughlin
A
Christchurch’s Anchor Projects are key initiatives to attract people into the central city. They are all about people – making the central city a place where people want to live, work and visit for social and cultural activities.
t long last we are now seeing physical evidence that major new public facilities such as the
Convention Centre (Te Pae) and the Metro Sports Facility (Taiwhanga Rehia) are more than concepts on urban planners’ drawing
boards. Bookings are already rolling in for the Convention Centre due to be finished in early 2020 and predicted to bring in more than $60 million in revenue to Canterbury. Short and longer-term accommodation for participants and spectators at conferences and events at these world-class facilities is going to be highly sought after. I am already finding inner city apartments are selling like proverbial ‘hotcakes’. Christchurch Central is definitely experiencing exponential growth and popularity from both locals and internationals. Scheduled for completion at a similar time to the Convention Centre, is a new inner city apartment development on Salisbury Street called SOHO Apartments. There are 44 apartments and 6 townhouses in this complex – all 2-bedroom/2-bathroom units, finished to a high specification and selling for $550,000 to $650,000. Each apartment has a secure car park and we are currently selling them off the plans from the developers. These units are an excellent opportunity for potential buyers to not only secure a better future for themselves and their families, but to also be an integral part of the renewed vibrancy of our beautiful city. first put on the editor’s cap for Canterbury Build magazine (then Canterbury Rebuild) in December 2013. In reflecting on that first issue I put together, I was in awe of the creative vision that was being rolled out across the city. In the words of Darwin, it’s not the strongest or the smartest who survive but those who are most adaptable to change and changing is certainly an apt description of the local landscape. Yes we are an innovative and crafty bunch in our little corner of the South Pacific. We are strong and resilient, but most importantly we are adaptable. We have taken that which Mother Nature has carelessly tossed over her worldly shoulder and created a new and unique city and one that we can all be proud to call home. We have continued to make significant progress, with some sizeable projects now coming to fruition. We have looked at comeback queen, The Town Hall’s mammoth restoration project; we have chatted to a developer who is saving some of the city’s oldest built heritage, Shaun Stockman; and we look at some showstopping residential projects, all in the pages ahead. Because, just like when I put those words together five years ago, I remain in awe of the burgeoning new city that is unfolding around us and I look forward to sharing this with you all.

he expert team at Stratco has the skills to help you create a space that can be enjoyed throughout the year, with its own range of unique verandas and louvres – from design to installation. “View our range online or visit us at our showroom to see what we can do for your outdoor space,” Stratco General Manager David Allingham says. A Stratco Outback® verandah, louvre or carport provides protection from the elements, expands your possibilities for entertaining, storage – or an all-weather play area for kids. “A veranda not only adds functional living space and value to your home, but provides protection from New Zealand’s harsh weather conditions. Our fixed-roof verandas offer an affordable alternative to our louvres. It’s a proven product with quality design – they’ve been around for years and there is no other product like this on the market.” Whether you are building a new home or making extensions, by letting light into your outdoors area while blocking out harmful rays and rain, homeowners are able to get so much more function from their home. The company offers a bespoke veranda which can be custom designed and built to suit your size, layout and attachment requirements. “We manufacture and install the units ourselves, so we can really customise them to suit each space. They are ideal as either attached or standalone units, and the addition of Stratco’s polycarbonate Outback Rooflite™ panels allows the supply of
filtered light to the underside of the veranda.” Another option is the Stratco Louvre. Controlled via a remote, Stratco’s systems also include a rain sensor as standard, so, if you are not home when it starts to rain, the unit will close automatically. Like the verandas, the louvres are ideal as either as an attached or standalone unit and, if you want to add louvres to an existing veranda, the team can retrofit a louvre system into most veranda/pergola frames – just request a free site measure to determine the finer details. From concept to finished product, Stratco’s louvre systems can be in place six weeks from the order date. Once the unit is measured at your home, the team runs each unit through an engineering programme, designed to confirm strength of system to suit your wind zone. The company can also provide fencing and sheds – and whatever you choose, the process is simple. Steve Cain, Outdoor Product Specialist at Stratco, will talk through the possibilities with you, and then measure and quote, which is free with no obligation. Stratco then designs, manufactures, and installs the products themselves – making the entire experience hassle-free. Based at 55 Hands Road, Middleton, phone the Stratco team on 03-338 9063 or visit www.stratco.co.nz for more information.
A lifeline for heritage Shaun Stockman was born in Lyttelton and grew up in Cass Bay. His passion and interest in heritage buildings and property investment began at age 24 when he purchased his first residential investment property, a small historic cottage in Strickland Street.
N
ow he is in the process of restoring the first ever historic façade he ever saved. The Ruby Black building, previously Victoria Black, is a well-known circa 1990 gem at 199-203 High Street. When the building was demolished, the previous owner Barry Watson had the foresight to prop up the small but pretty façade. The restoration is a project which is both challenging and exciting for Shaun. “The development is exciting for me because I am creative and love restoring and transforming things,” he says. In 2001 Shaun became Director and shareholder of KPI Rothschild and all its subsidiaries. The group focused on inner
city heritage buildings and, pre-quake, had restored more than 20 heritage buildings, including England Bros House, Kensington House and Stranges Building. The group has since rebuilt a replacement Stranges Building, in addition to a replacement England Bros House – now Billens Building. Stockman Group has restored again Bonnington House – an 1883 Oamaru stone building – and work is underway on the Victoria Black and Cotters Lane buildings, both circa 1900. He founded and continues to run Stockman Group with a strong core team. This includes the Above your Space brand which serves some 50 plus smaller businesses. Shaun also enjoys
contributing to the community and is particularly proud of his role as a Trustee of Cross Roads Youth with a Future Trust; a trust that works with at-risk youth in Aranui. Along with his wife Karen, they support several other local and international charities that help at-risk children. Shaun is playing an active role in the city’s earthquake recovery. He is on the Central City Business Association’s (CCBA) executive board; the group that drove the Re:START container mall to be established in Cashel Mall and is a trustee of the Christchurch Heritage Trust which recently saved the former Trinity Church in Manchester Street.

ne of the key parts to making Christchurch’s downtown a great place to live, work and play is ensuring strong investment from private developers in residential development within the four avenues. Without great projects catering to all sections of the property market, we won’t deliver on the bold ambition to see 20,000 people living in our central city. That’s why I was so pleased to see the council outline their downtown housing development plan, ‘Project 8011’, designed to reduce the risks of investment, provide increased advice and support to developers and accelerate the delivery of housing in the central city. Central to its success will be ensuring it is focused on working with and facilitating the private sector to deliver the developments we need. The CBD rebuild has been spearheaded by private developers, who have delivered high quality retail, office and hospitality offerings. We know that when properly enabled, the private sector is the best chance we have of ensuring success for Project 8011. We will see a raft of promotional activities soon to activate our central city. This is vital to the success of the fantastic developments we have seen so far. We are also entering another exciting period of openings, with the next few months welcoming Turanga, the Hoyts cinema complex, the central city Farmers’ Market and the Ballantynes extension. These great projects will attract more people into the central city. We can’t afford to lose momentum in visitation to the CBD while we wait for these game-changing city assets to come online.
F
ollowing the release of the Independent Ministerial Advisor’s report in June which found that things weren’t up to scratch at the Earthquake Commission, it is great to see some positive changes being made in progressing claims and communication with claimants. Most of these changes have been really practical and directly addressed some of the issues at EQC. As a result, 46 percent of the claims that were on the books in May have been resolved – and some of these were really tricky ones that had been awaiting resolution for a long time. All claimants now have got a case manager who is their main point of contact. This means that they don’t have to start their story over and over again when they call EQC to talk to someone about their claim. Staff numbers have been increased to meet demand – unlike the previous Government which reduced staff numbers at the start of last year even though the number of claims kept rising. These staff members are also experts, which ensures that they are well equipped to handle the workload and can work effectively. It’s been heartening to receive feedback that shows as a consequence of some of these changes, people are having a more positive experience with EQC. We know we still have more to do but we’re working hard to ensure that we get these claims sorted so that people can get on with their lives.
O
ne of the repeated issues that we see in NZ business is the ongoing difficulty in attracting skilled labour. In the construction sector, an area often in the news lately, we are faced with a continual shortage of trained and experienced engineers, architects, planners etc. If left unchecked, this can impact productivity, quality and the delivery of effective design solutions, ultimately leading to undesirable project outcomes and contributing to the failure of some firms. Providing structured training to enable staff development is essential to ensuring the NZ workforce stays apace with ongoing technical and technological advancements, but with the true power of a business being staff, we can also empower teams by encouraging community support initiatives, for the mutual benefit of staff, the company and the community. It was a pleasure then to see our young engineers showing our next generation of engineers the basics of structural frames at Engineering Week. The August showcase brought together engineering companies at the University of Canterbury campus to highlight the wide range of engineering careers available here in Canterbury. Of special note was the wide diversity of interested school students suggesting future careers in STEM subjects are now seen more favourably than in the past. Our previous involvement with Habitat for Humanity is another example of allowing our staff to support essential aid programmes in the community, while developing skills and experience; the benefit here being the opportunity to attract staff who are actively seeking these opportunities and thereby feeding like-minded engaged individuals into our empowered teams.

he Christchurch City Council recently announced the development of an action plan to increase the pace of regeneration in Christchurch’s city centre. The stimulus was an assessment by Regenerate Christchurch of progress in the central city and five key recommendations regarding leadership, growth, people, activation and implementation. The council’s action plan was also informed by ChristchurchNZ’s most recent economic update. Significant progress has been made in rebuilding the central city – largely driven by private sector investment and development. What is clear in the report on our analysis, which is available on our website, is that further increasing central city regeneration will require a range of measures. As construction-led activity begins to tail off, without more workers, residents, shoppers and visitors in the central city, Christchurch will be economically vulnerable. So, what can we, as a city, do? The council’s action plan is being designed to align activity planned by public sector agencies with private sectorled activities. We also need to collectively, as a city, focus on making ‘best for city’ decisions and compete harder to attract people here. The city has an opportunity to absorb growth in a way that no other major city in New Zealand can. We can also offer facilities, infrastructure and lifestyle that other cities cannot. Having the space to support the growth of New Zealand’s businesses and the national economy, is a very powerful value proposition for Christchurch, one that we must collectively pursue and promote on behalf of our city.
Ō
tākaro recently ran a series of walking tours around the central city as part of Explore Christchurch, a campaign to encourage locals to come and see what’s going on in town. With around 300 people joining us across the eight tours, the level of interest surpassed our expectations. At first glance, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, the Avon River Precinct, Rauora Park and the South Frame all sound like isolated projects. On the tours we were able to show how linking homes to parks and shops, restaurants and other attractions makes the central city an increasingly pleasant place to be. The same goes for the links between Te Pae, hotels, shops, cafés and the river. The feedback we’ve received on the tours suggests that for many people it was the first time the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan made sense. Ōtākaro is delivering a whole host of new places for people within the four avenues and it was great to see people enjoying the gardens and paved walkways alongside the major developments forming the new central city. So, if you went on a tour, do us a favour and take someone you know for a look around. Show them the homes being built alongside Rauora Park, point out the riverside Promenade that is now being finished. Or join us for another Ōtākaro tour on 13 October as part of the walking festival and we’ll see if we can make a tour guide out of you.
T
he relatively flat housing market in Christchurch is fuelling interest from first home buyers keen to capitalise on the largely stagnant prices. But buying your first home is far from easy, although KiwiSaver and HomeStart grants are fantastic tools to help get onto the property ladder. A young couple recently came to us to arrange finance to purchase their first home. Having been in KiwiSaver since its inception, they had almost $100,000 which they could use as a deposit. That’s a huge start. KiwiSaver enables first home buyers to withdraw the balance of their accounts to buy a property as long as they have been a member for at least three years and provided they leave an account balance of $1000. The HomeStart grant varies depending on how long contributions have been made and whether the property is existing or new. Additionally, there are caps on the purchase price that vary by region. For Christchurch, this is $500,000 for existing dwellings or $550,000 for new builds. In terms of structuring, I’m a fan of annual fixed-rate rollovers. There are some great one-year rates on offer and, even if rates increase by 0.5 percent each year, you would still be paying less on average than fixing for a three-year period right now. Whether it’s your first home, or fifth, the overriding message for Christchurch buyers is ‘be prepared’. Obtain your pre-approval certificate and ensure you engage with specialists who understand the insurance aspects of buying property in Christchurch following the earthquakes.

are craving authenticity in genuine fresh produce. “People would tell me the food smelt like their childhood, or it took them back to the family farm. That’s the power of good food. The taste and smell of it is embedded in us and can trigger powerful feelings. This is a great opportunity for us to sell our produce and to work with other local producers to sell their food too.” But it’s not just about growing good produce. Cultivate Christchurch is also changing the lives of the young people that take part in their youth programme. “We provide employment training internships for young people from some of the most disadvantaged backgrounds, who are not currently in education, employment or training. The positive changes and transformations that many of these young people experience is something that no other agency or service has been achieving,” Bailey says. The results of the programme speak for themselves – 60 percent of the youths go on to find other work, start studying or training of some sort and 40 percent keep in touch with the team at Cultivate Christchurch. “There’s something powerful about working outside with these young people, side by side. They know they are part of something bigger than themselves and the impact it has on them is phenomenal.” As well as the 3000 square metre central city farm, Cultivate Christchurch now has three additional sites in the city and runs a compost arm – collecting green waste in the CBD and turning it into compost to grow the produce and bio-remediate the soil. The business is exploring ideas for further expansion; continuing its aim to feed and help people. They have identified 80 hectares of land in the residential red zone, along the river, that would be ideal for urban farming. “It’s in close proximity to communities that would really benefit, with space to teach people about growing food and for them to see positive relationship modelling in action. Some people see it as a nobrainer.”

FROM WASTE TO RESILIENCE A UC Smart Ideas proposal that aims to create seismic resilient foundation systems from used tyres has been approved for funding of $1 million by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Chiaro, of the Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department. “Successful completion of this research will result in a sustainable engineering solution to increase the seismic resilience of low-rise buildings while reusing and recycling waste tyres with great environmental and socio-economic benefits for the country, such as new jobs, improved products, and increased revenues for New Zealand, and hopefully the world,” Dr Chiaro says. Annually in New Zealand, more than 3.5 million used tyres are destined for landfills, illegally disposed or unaccounted for, he says, giving rise to stockpiles of tyres that do not readily degrade and disintegrate. With the ever-growing volume of waste tyres, environmental concerns have urged the search for reuse of waste tyres through large-scale recycling engineering applications. “Waste tyres are a great source of environmentally friendly and sustainable building materials that can be made affordable and readily available through technological innovations,” Dr Chiaro says. “Also, they may provide novel and effective engineering solutions to enable us to design buildings with enhanced seismic resilience. This makes them ideal materials for developing affordable, medium-density, low-rise buildings that are in high demand in New Zealand.”

he new Dwell showhome in Fendalton merges contemporary design innovation and environmental sustainability, while maintaining the emphasis on high quality craftsmanship. A stunning example of the company’s work, the Wroxton Terrace house is clad entirely in western red cedar, stained black on the vertical and natural on the horizontal and consists of three pavilions linked by a central hallway and a series of outdoor courtyard spaces. The combination of the two colours of cedar continues into the interior, where slate-look timber tiles and a five-metre high ceiling in the kitchen/dining further highlight the architectural details. The energy efficient home’s stunning bathrooms feature Techlam large format porcelain tiles, softened with timber detailing. The minimal colour palette, deliberately chosen, emphasises the texture of the raw materials, accentuates the views and demonstrates the Dwell aesthetic. Designed specifically for the tranquillity of the site, the public areas and all but one of the four bedrooms, spill out onto timber decking via expansive full-height glazing, linking the interior to the outdoors. Bryan works with his wife, interior designer and Co-Director Lena Doull. “We collaborate closely from the outset of each project, developing ideas and design features to ensure that the architecture and interiors are cohesive and anchored,” Lena says. NG MODEL home builds that strips out the wastage.
What is the key mission? Our mission is to make buying warm, comfortable, new homes more accessible for all New Zealanders. Chaptr brings
How are you doing this? Chaptr works collaboratively with developers, builders and brokers to manage financial process and risks more efficiently. As a Chaptr buyer, you get a cheaper house and land package, while the developer, builder and the bank are placed in much more secure positions. We offer buyers a range of house and land packages in agreed residential developments with a wide selection of builders and house plans. As a home buyer, you only need the deposit for the land to get started, so you borrow less to get on the property ladder and you get a full house and land package at the end. The developers use your capital to help with their costs and everyone saves. Home buyers also save twice on the build because Chaptr’s registered master builder partners offer you standard plans at extra competitive fixed prices and, because they have a guaranteed buyer, they remove their spec build margin. There’s no risk either; Chaptr arranges the financial transaction to offer buyers peace of mind financially. Your deposit is protected in a secure trust account.
By paying less for something worth more, you’re not only getting onto the property ladder and into safe, warm homes, you’re also getting ahead with greater equity in your property. How much of an impact do you envision this having on the traditional building industry model? Chaptr’s model is unique. We’ve spent considerable time developing the commercial, legal and technical intellectual property that will allow a complete stepchange in the way residential developments are financed and risk managed. While the parties are still the same, Chaptr has changed the financial relationships between the parties. Chaptr allows for a much more collaborative process between developers, builders and buyers. The outcome from this is lower risk and better financial outcomes for all parties. Essentially, Chaptr delivers the exact same house on the same section for a lower price. This leads to great opportunities for buyers, as well as developers and builders. Personally, I’m most excited about the potential for social good. By making warm new homes more affordable, we’re improving the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders. We’re hoping to partner with organisations who build affordable new housing to increase our impact and help them build better homes for less. www.chaptr.co.nz

Canterbury’s own Ingrid Geldof has made the province proud again by bringing home nine awards from the National Kitchen and Bathroom Associations (NKBA) awards presentation. Ever modest about her achievements, Ingrid quietly admits it is the highest number of awards ever won by a designer in a year.
Y
ou can see how her design for the ‘Georgian Bathroom’ stopped the judges in their tracks. The bath forms a focal point sited beneath two mullioned windows. It is approached via an avenue lined with twin vanities set against partition walls, which screen the shower on one side and the toilet on the other. The bathroom is flooded with light, enhanced by the glossy large format
marble-look porcelain tiles. The twin vanities are in dark stained solid oak, with Caesarstone bench tops. In the kitchen, the marble-look tiles cover the floor, while lighting is classic spotlights, under bench, and lit glass-fronted and shelved cupboards. The empire crystal chandelier is a dramatic focal point over the convivial dining space at the end of the 6.5m island. Ingrid worked closely with co-designer
Rachel Barnes on the intricate details, while Bridget Sullivan of Room Interiors worked with Ingrid on the home’s colour choices and drapes. Advanced Joinery manufactured the joinery. They have worked with Ingrid for a number of years and, with Ingrid, achieved the NZ Manufacturer Craftsman Award. Director Greg Ayers says, “It is a pleasure to work with Ingrid, her plans are detailed and easy to use”. Ingrid says Advanced Joinery has been amazing with the detailing required. “You can see the workmanship that has gone in and the award is well deserved.” Greg says, “it’s a thrill for the team to receive this award for the detailed work they did”. Advanced Joinery has also won the Canterbury Region 2018 NZ Master Builders Heart of the Home Kitchen Award for another project with Ingrid. The Georgian kitchen and bathroom brought home six awards plus the new award: NKBA Designer of the Year, earned for the two kitchens Ingrid entered; Canterbury Bathroom of the Year sponsored by Artisan Stone, Certified Designer Bathroom of the Year sponsored by The Kitchen Hub, Overall NKBA Bathroom of the Year, sponsored by St Michel, Classic Kitchen of the Year, sponsored by Schneider, Kitchen $80,000$100,000 sponsored by Gaggenau, and the Manufacturer Craftmanship Award, sponsored by Burns and Ferrall, which Ingrid is proud to share with Advanced Joinery.

Creating kitchen envy As if receiving the highest number of awards in one season ever isn’t enough, Ingrid Geldof also flew home from the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) awards ceremony carrying the inaugural award: Designer of the Year, sponsored by Laminex.
T
his new award requires designers to enter at least two projects, and the two projects with the highest marks are combined to find the Designer of the Year. Ingrid won this title for her entries Georgian Kitchen (featured on page 87) and the Akaroa Kitchen. Akaroa Kitchen was awarded Canterbury Kitchen of the Year sponsored by Artisan, and Kitchen $40-$60K sponsored by New Zealand Panels Group, bringing Ingrid’s total number of honours to an amazing nine, for 2018. Ingrid describes Akaroa kitchen as contemporary in style and very slick. All designed without handles, the kitchen features bi-fold doors with touch-to-open technology, a forward-thinking element employed before it was readily available for bi-folds. “Things are moving fast in our industry,” Ingrid says. The kitchen enjoys divine views of Akaroa with sliding doors mirroring one-another on the West and East walls. The sunshine which inundates the room guided Ingrid’s choice of melamine rather than natural wood, which would have suffered from the flood of natural light.
88 September 27, 2018 Metropol
Not only an award winner, this is one of Ingrid’s favourite ever kitchens. “I love the simplicity and its elegance, it is not symmetrical but it is balanced and it has exquisite fine detailing.” The back wall houses the oven and cooktop, fridge and freezer. Cabinetry is two-toned with an outer frame in dark brown melamine named ‘Oiled Legno’, surrounding ‘Prime Melamine Baroque’. Slipped between the two is a 50mm protruding, 12mm fine white Corian frame, with shark-nose edge. It’s like nothing you’ve seen before and the effect is stunning. The white 12mm shark-nose Corian is also used to wrap the island: floating off the floor up the sides and forming the worktop, complete with integrated Corian duo twin sinks. The ‘frame’ and bench were created by Benchtop Solutions, who worked closely with Ingrid to ensure the shark-nose profile was perfect. Prime Melamine Baroque encloses the island front and back, and an informal solid dark stained timber dining table, with stainless steel legs completes the unit. The kitchen is beautifully subtle and
refined, a result not always achieved in a contemporary kitchen. Modern Age Kitchens & Joinery was presented with an opportunity to create not just a kitchen, but an entertainer’s dream, along with the other eye-catching joinery to complete the beautiful one-of-a-kind home. Ingrid and her clients required excellence, along with approachable friendly service, and that is exactly what was provided by the team at Modern Age Kitchens & Joinery. The company’s precise workmanship, attention to detail, professionalism and a great relationship with Ingrid, enabled Modern Age Kitchens & Joinery to bring Ingrid and her clients’ vision to life. Owners Grant and Graham Woodham are grateful to have been a part of this journey and look forward to continuing to work closely with Ingrid in the future.

Classical-pitched roofs frame two pavilions of random-width cedar and white-painted brick veneer. A central entrance proceeds to a sunken lounge, while a fullheight glass gallery leads to the library. Four bedrooms are ensconced in one pavilion, with living in the other, encompassing 328sqm. The open-plan kitchen opens to a large deck with a louvred pergola, the scullery and an alfresco bar. The sound Armadillo engineered foundation system, thermal-broken doubleglazed windows, passive solar design, and upgraded insulation all future-proof this beautiful home. ow a Gap-Filler-style area full of food caravans with happy, relaxed locals meandering through, memories came flooding back, reminding me of the prominence of this central city block – both historically and architecturally. The Christchurch Town Hall represents a core part of the heritage fabric of
Christchurch and one which has served as a gathering place for performances, cultural events and meetings since 1972. Watching the work underway to bring back one of Christchurch’s last standing heritage buildings can only be described as a powerful experience. The improvement of the ground has
taken almost 11 months alone, with the insertion of new piling systems that are necessary not only to repair, but also to future-proof the building and protect it should we ever face another seismic event. A new raft slab has been well-planned to ensure that if anything happens, damage should be focused on the surrounding

In October 2012 the recommendation came through to demolish everything but the main auditorium; a hard call for the people of Christchurch but Christchurch City councillors voted to restore the building. Young and Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet, to having champagne with Kiri Te Kanawa, and even my first stage show of Cats. This is, in my opinion, why the Christchurch City Council voted to restore it; the need to retain something of cultural importance to Christchurch which is at risk of becoming a contemporary city full of concrete tilt slabs and glass façades; something to remind us that we have a vibrant, relevant and important history. According to Andrew Trevelyan from Ōtākaro, the Crown-led initiative giving direction to the rebuild in Christchurch, the Garden City rebuild is in full swing, as we head towards the completion of major projects and the Town Hall is integral to that narrative, as we put the puzzle pieces back together. With new marble floors, sweeping staircases and lush carpets, the Town Hall will once again take her place as a centre of entertainment to enable the people of Canterbury to once more enjoy her delights. With its amazing overhaul featuring the new Avon Room and its stunning view of the new Victoria Square and Avon River, the Town Hall is coming back, better, stronger and more dynamic than ever before and we have not long to go before we can all take in her outer and inner wonders – it’s going to be a beautiful thing.

work hard to meet the February 2019 deadline. The hard yards are done, and constant chatter of power drills, hammers and skill saws is a reminder that we are on a building site in full swing. With several new spaces for events areas and a multifunctional capability, the new Town Hall has more muscle for the future, while remaining respectful of the poignancy this vestige of Christchurch’s built heritage represents. Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney from Warren and Mahoney Architects designed the Town Hall and completed the project on 30 September 1972. Since then it has been a hub of performing arts and an iconic part of Christchurch’s architecture. The Town Hall is one of the first buildings in New Zealand to be remediated using jet grouting; the 150mm thick floor slab has been replaced with a new concrete raft slab, helping to bring the building up to 100 percent of the New Building Standard. Above ground, instead of adding extrya concrete to reinforce the building, a new method of applying fibre-reinforced polymer to the original walls has been used. The new material is thinner but as strong as concrete. Everyone who knows the Town Hall has a story; I personally have a multitude, including enjoying a tipple with Paul

Edgy + sophisticated space Office space in Christchurch central is changing. These days we are seeing a move towards shared office spaces and the benefits that it brings to incubators, entrepreneurs and small businesses. Stockman Group has taken advantage of this opportunity and brings you its newest project at 38 Southwark Street, due to be ready late-2018.
I
f you want an edgy but sophisticated office environment, you have just found it,” Shaun says. The development will create an edgy office environment complemented by a café with courtyard. Sharing boardrooms, bathrooms and amenities, while still holding the integrity of your own office makes sense in these modern times where a business hub meets most companies’ requirements. The interior will have an industrial-feel with concrete ply and steel as some of the finishes. The building will comprise eleven separate office spaces that will come furnished; a shared meeting room, reception and an open plan office area. With spaces available from 26sqm to 106sqm, there is an opportunity for all types of small to medium-sized businesses. Situated in the heart of the Christchurch rebuild, 38 Southwark Street is within walking distance to Little High and Madam Woo. With a variety of options available, contact Anna on how you can capitalise on this vibrant working space. To discuss your requirement, phone or text Anna Morawiec on 022 059 7620, or email anna.morawiec@cbre.co.nz.

A pioneering property As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of New Zealand becoming the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote this month, the Christchurch villa where a lot of the legwork behind the campaign took place has been put on the market.
K
ate Sheppard’s former fourbedroom, three-bathroom Ilam villa was where Kate and her fellow suffragists wrote pamphlets, prepared speeches and collected thousands of signatures for their petition – which became the largest ever to be presented to Parliament. The trailblazer and driving force behind this ground-breaking development in women’s rights lived in the home at 83 Clyde Road for 14 years during the campaign. The signatures were pasted onto rolls of wallpaper in her dining room and later theatrically rolled out on the floor of Parliament by Sir John Hall, which helped
convince a sceptical Parliament to vote through the revolutionary new electoral law. Arguably one of New Zealand’s most famous and influential women, Kate Sheppard now appears on our $10 note – with Everest conqueror, Sir Edmund Hillary on the $5 note and HM The Queen on the $20 note. A commemorative bust of Sheppard has pride of place in the New Zealand Parliament and together with others in her progressive movement, she appears on a large bronze plaque on the banks of the River Avon in Christchurch. With much of the women’s suffrage campaign orchestrated from the house, it was registered as a heritage building by the
New Zealand Historic Places Trust on 10 December 2010. Now for sale for the first time in 33 years, the iconic home looks much as it did in Kate’s time, sitting on more than a manicured acre close to the heart of the city. Under the stewardship of the current owner it has been transformed into a show place that few private residences can match. Architects Warren and Mahoney have brought the home up to 21st century standards, without losing the character of the home’s architecture.
