t may be somewhat of a proverbial cliché, but when it comes to the notion that the world would be a very boring place if we were all the same, it’s a concept which is at its very heart, founded on truth.

Much like the rebuilding city with its eclectic mix of old and new culminating in a dynamic central city space, the people that make up our city too play a key role in forming the vibrant urban centre which stands today.

Christchurch is so much more than the sum of its parts and we’ve spent the past 20 years showcasing what makes the city such a cool one. But if we had to sum up how it got there, it would be the people.

Having been in the privileged position to spend time with some of the city’s movers and shakers over the past several years, I can honestly say that they all link great cities to the people behind them.

In true Metropol fashion, this issue serves to showcase the best the city has to offer. We have the events, the initiatives, the trends, the businesses and, in our Metropol Build supplement, the products and developments that make Christchurch tick. So kick back, relax and let us enlighten you.

Rangiora will become a technicoloured riot of high-energy fun next month, to celebrate its diverse cultural vibrancy.

T

he Pak n Save Rangiora Festival of Colour 2018 will be an unmissable inaugural event, from 10am to 4pm

on 24 March, at Victoria Park.

Karl Howarth and Sarah Broughton, who organised Rangiora’s winter festival,

have taken a little inspiration from the worldwide Indian festival – similar to the one held in Christchurch, but with a twist that reflects North Canterbury’s bourgeoning multicultural community.

“Throw in some colour cannons, a big LED screen, a foam machine and, of course, the throwing of colours and we have a recipe for a fun day!” Karl says. “The coloured powders are made from natural corn starch powder and food-grade natural dyes, which will wash off.”

He suggests wearing a white t-shirt to really show them up. Colours and T-shirts will be available for purchase on the day.

Cultural performances such as kapa haka, Irish dancing, Highland performers and bagpipes, Japanese drummers, Chinese dragon and Indian Bollywoodstyle dancers, will entertain and educate in an alcohol-free family environment.

Meanwhile, talented local bands and musicians, and a DJ playing incredible international and dance music, will keep the party grooving.

Among the free activities provided by the many sponsors are a children’s area with bouncy castles (including a free under 5’s castle), Bumpa Boats, and Water Walkers. An amazing selection of international food trucks and restaurants – many of them local – will befit the feast of colour.

STARRY EYED Christchurch local Mandy Pickering captured the heart of the nation when she won Stars in Their Eyes in 2009. We talk to this talented performer about her incredible success.

How much of a part did singing and performing play in your life prior to the competition?

I always loved to sing. I taught myself how to play the piano and would spend hours just singing and playing whenever I had the chance. My parents met in a band, my mother is a singer and my father is a guitarist so I grew up with music all around me and it was a very natural thing for me to sing, although I hadn’t performed professionally before Stars In Their Eyes.

What have you been up to in the last nine years?

I had a whirlwind of amazing (sometimes terrifying) experiences following my success on the show; I performed my first professional gigs, recorded an album and toured in New Zealand and Australia. I couldn’t have done it without the help of some incredibly talented musicians who guided me along the way.

Following the Christchurch earthquakes, the ‘Heart Strings’ Project became my focus. My husband and musician, Jason, and his craftsman father built seven unique guitars using timber from some of the city’s beautiful historic buildings that had fallen. These guitars were exhibited and toured around the country before being auctioned off and raising $111,000 to support the Christchurch arts community.

I still love working at Champs-Elysées Day Spa and my marketing role means I can often work remotely, allowing me flexibility to perform at gigs around the country. Recently we have built a home on five acres in North Canterbury and I’m settling into the country lifestyle quite nicely.

How much of a part does singing and music continue to play in your life today?

I still perform regularly at weddings

and corporate events throughout the country, but more importantly, it is also still something I love to do just for myself… I have my piano in my bedroom and I play and sing every day.

I understand music’s a family affair, with a musician husband and a music space in your newly built home?

My husband, Jason, is a talented guitarist and he accompanies me on all of my gigs. He a huge support and I feel so lucky that music and performing is something that we share.

Before the build of our home commenced, we built a separate studio that we lived in for six months while building was in progress, which has now been converted into our music studio. It is filled with Jason’s amps and collection of guitars, many of which were hand crafted by his father. Our two sons have grown into young men and have musical talents of their own, so they enjoy using the space as well, and even perform with us occasionally at more relaxed gigs.

What have been some of the most stand-out experiences of your career?

I loved touring in New Zealand and Australia as part of the ‘Heart Strings’ project and having the opportunity to support the arts in Christchurch in such a meaningful way.

Performing at exclusive events have taken me to incredible venues, places I never dreamed I would have the chance to perform, such as Te Papa, the Beehive, Auckland Museum and many beautiful vineyards.

Last month I was thrilled to perform at the Sunset Symphony Concert featuring the Auckland Symphony Orchestra to an audience of over 15,000 which is an experience I will never forget Amanda is performing at OGB on Saturday 17 February from 7-10pm

Walk THE Walk

Christchurch is a visual and physical treat for fleet-footed thrill seekers looking for some action.

There are plenty of walking adventures through diverse landscapes to suit those from all walks of life – pun completely intended.

ithin just a short distance from the city, there are a wide range of walks, through native bush and wetlands, head up one of the many magical mountain peaks that frame the city, or go in search of some breath-taking coastal views along the eastern stretch.

So why not take a walk on the wilderness side and try some tempting new spots with our quick guide.

HALSWELL QUARRY: Halswell Quarry played a major role in the development of Christchurch, before ceasing production in 1990 after 140 years of quarrying. A unique 60-hectare park, it offers various walks from 5-40 minutes all accessed from the car park off Kennedys Bush Road. Toilets are located in the main car park area. You will also find picnic sites and a dog park area.

THE CRATER RIM TRACK: The Crater Rim walk traverses the length of the Port Hills from Godley Head to Gebbies Pass. Start at the Sign of the Bellbird, head along the Summit Road to reach the saddle on the south side of Cass Peak Reserve. A cattle grid marks the point where you can leave the road to access the track, which offers stunning views over the city to the Southern Alps.

Toilets are located in the Godley Head car park.

WASHPEN FALLS: Just a one-hour drive from Christchurch, Washpen Falls is a loop track in a breathtaking natural setting in the midst of a working sheep, cattle and deer farm. Although a small fee is charged (which includes a track guide and use of walking sticks) it is well worth it for this exceptional little escape. Described as ‘a pocket of paradise where moa once roamed’, Washpen Falls is a conservation project that started 80 million years ago with a major volcanic blow.

CASTLE HILL: The grand limestone rock battlements of Kura Tawhiti led early European travellers to name this unique area Castle Hill. An area rich in Maori history, the track loops its way around the magnificent limestone rock formations but the joy in this area is heading off the track and exploring at your own pace.

MT SOMERS: If backcountry is up your alley, then Mt Somers is the ideal location, with a number of options for walkers of all abilities to explore and get a taste of backcountry New Zealand. There are a number of walks available including a half/full day hike to one of the DoC huts.

For a circuit trip to Woolshed Creek Hut, walk in on the Miners Track and out via Rhyolite Ridge Track.

or the answer, beautiful in its simplicity, we could do no better than ponder the motto of the organisation Big Brothers Big Sisters: One hour.

Once a week. One life.

Founded in New York, 1904 by war veteran, journalist and lawyer Ernest Coulter, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been in operation for 100+ years and has turned around the lives of more than 280,000 children per year.

Matthew Button, Manager of BBBS Christchurch, came aboard 14 years ago and it’s evident he still loves his work. The dedication that Matthew and his team bring to the job of matching young people, aged 6-18, with nurturing mentors is both inspiring and heart-warming.

Matthew outlines what it is about BBBS that makes it a great mentoring programme.

“The value of working one to one is paramount; the importance of building up a young person’s confidence – to look them in the eye and say ‘You’re okay’, that’s the starting point of change.”

Matthew says Christchurch people are very open to the idea of mentoring – 162 young people were matched with a mentor in 2017.

“The earthquakes, though devastating, were in many ways a catalyst for kindness and thinking of others. People thought about the ways they could be of help and reached out to those in need. The goodness of people is very life affirming.”

People like Duane Smithson, for instance. Four years ago, Duane

was jogging past the office window of Big Brothers Big Sisters and says the name, for some reason, clicked in his brain. He did some research when he got home and then rang Matthew.

“I’m not about saving the world, or changing 100,000 people’s lives,” Duane says, “I’m married with two kids; I’ve a great home and work life, but there was that sense of meaning and purpose that I felt could still be filled.”

In his role as Big Brother, Duane meets up with his “young brother” once a week.

“We play a bit of sports; he writes some amazing, funny poems. Early on I worked out that he’d a bit of an engineering bent, so we do stuff that kind of addresses that strength, as well.”

We talk to Kathleen Gallagher about the therapeutic storyline.

How long did it take?

The work began from notes I took while living through the severe earthquake sequences here in Christchurch 2010 - 2012. I wrote the first draft with Elizabeth O’Connor of the Court Theatre as dramaturg. I then wrote the book, the radio play with Prue Langbein of Radio NZ National directing, a second draft of the play with Steven Arnold directing and finally have worked on this final draft with Helen Moran as director. Maybe now on the seventh anniversary we are in a position to watch and interact with it and transform.

What was the intent behind this work?

To listen with all of our senses, to heal, to transform, to move through, to touch places of great pain for the people of Otautahi Christchurch in a way that is healing for us - that enables us to move on and through, transformed, to see things in the light.

To hold our experiences up into the light and to be with them in a new and more open way. To glimpse and describe ourselves and who we have become through the process of living through the earthquakes, staying here, being with, moving alongside, becoming whole.

Why did you make this play?

To make some sort of sense out of what happened to us here - living for twenty months through 80,000 earthquakes including 10 major earthquake sequences, which is extremely unusual. Splitting of the tectonic plate occurs in only five percent of the world’s earthquakes.

Whole new earthquake sequences continued to open up time and time again. We were never sure when they were going to strike nor how long for We all suffer various degrees of trauma, most of us have now experienced a life-threatening event.

The end of this month will see the closeknit team from Cameron & Co’s Ilam offices relocate from their current premises in Clyde Road, to the newly out-fitted permanent Riccarton Road office. The decision to establish a larger combined suburban office arose, as after the earthquakes, the business ended up with three of its four offices located in very close proximity. “It just made sense to consolidate and find a location that was still suburban, but could accommodate more of the team – all under one roof.”

The Ilam office will relocate premises on 28 February. The move will see a continuum of legal services provided for former clients of Mitchell Mackersy, purchased by Cameron & Co in 2014, along with clients of partner Tim Holton and Associate of the firm Marg Morrison.

“Being literally five minutes down the road makes the logistics a bit easier – so we fully intend to have everyone settled in and be open for business as usual the next day.”

Until 14 October 2018, a selfproclaimed ‘engrossing selection of abstract art by big-name New Zealand artists’ is on show at Christchurch Art Gallery. From the austere, geometric precision of Gordon Walters and Don Driver, to the spontaneous, expressive paintings of Gretchen Albrecht, Ralph Hotere and Colin McCahon, Untitled #1050 focuses on shape, form, colour and materials.

The Centre of Contemporary Art has always excelled in its role in showing innovative, explorative and sometimes confounding art that imprints itself on the memories of those who encounter its exhibitions. In 2018, it will continue to revel in this role, with Hannah Beehre’s Mures, Et Terram setting an eclectic tone. The large, seven-panel drawing explores chance as both artistic strategy and subject, and is presented as a collaboration between Jonathan Smart Gallery and CoCA. Hannah’s work is a powerful visual expression of her experiences following the 2010/2011 earthquakes. Animals act as an allegory for her human experiences, with her lens of experience also expanding to look at global politics.

Gas, The Physics Room:

Just a few days shy of the curtain falling on this exhibition, you’ll want to head to The Physics Room at pace to experience Gas, a collaboration between Mark Harvey and Shaun Hendy. Installed across two locations at 209 Tuam Street and The Physics Room’s new gallery space at 4959 Worcester Boulevard, Gas is exploring this state of matter in the context of nonlocality and what it means for gas to be in two places at once - what it can do for our psycho-political states, and how it can be owned and contained.

Franz Josef Glacier is widely regarded as the gem of New Zealand’s West Coast glaciers and a range of glacier hiking tours are on offer, as well as experiencing a heli flight and hot pools.

OAMARU: It might be a humble, inconspicuous player on the recreational scene, but Oamaru brings its A-game when it comes to recreation.

With its preserved Victorian architecture, this seaside town doesn’t need to work hard to win affections. Enjoy the stunning Moeraki Boulders, two penguin colonies, a craft brewery on the harbour and walking and cycling trails that are dressed to impress.

SUMMER’S SEASIDE SELECTIONS

New Brighton has come alive this summer, with the suburb’s newest playground attracting hundreds of people a day, since the beachside playground with its distinctive whale opened in December.

evelopment Christchurch Chief Executive Rob Hall says the playground has been highly successful, drawing people from throughout the city to check out the new attraction.

“From what we’ve seen and heard, busy days can easily attract hundreds of people to the playground – many of whom are visitors to New Brighton.”

The annual SummerTimes Kite Day event at New Brighton beach last month saw approximately 500 people getting together to fly kites or watch them being flown.

One of them is Julie Adam, also known as ‘The Kite Lady’, who lives in Christchurch but travels around New Zealand running kite making workshops for children. “Whenever I fly a kite people

come and talk to me. It makes people smile. There’s a really nice community kind of feeling to it.”

The city’s eastern stretch will also soon be home to a new skate park, with four sites short-listed for the bays area between Ferrymead and Sumner.

Christchurch City Council is now asking the community to rate the four sites in order of preference to help it determine which site should be selected. The four sites are 26 Nayland Street Sumner, Sumner Beach near the Surf Life Saving Club, Scott Park Ferrymead and Redcliffs School site on Recliffs’ Main Road.

People have from Monday 29 January until 5pm on 26 February to rate the sites and submit their feedback.

It was rather fortuitous for Tiggi that her owners enrolled her with Ourvets back in 2007 when she needed her first puppy vaccinations. Since she was a puppy, Tiggi has developed a habit of biting off a little more than she can chew which has seen her need the use of the clinic’s diagnostic equipment on more than one occasion during the past 10 years.

irst it was a children’s toy back in 2012, then a button in April last year – both found and surgically removed with the assistance of radiography. When Tiggi presented at the clinic with similar symptoms of lethargy and vomiting in December last year, the veterinary team had their suspicions! The team took a radiograph of Tiggi’s tummy to look for the cause.

Despite the benefits of this technology, radiographs do have their limitations, veterinarian Dr Richard Lucy explains.

“X-rays are best at differentiating certain things that are high density materials such as bone and metal,” he says.

“Ultrasound on the other hand is an imaging technique which uses high frequency sound waves and enables us to look internally with greater accuracy.

The two are very complementary as diagnostic techniques and ultrasound covers the limitations of x-rays.”

Sure enough, the ultrasound uncovered a suspicious linear foreign object in her tummy. “This had caused Tiggi’s gut to be obstructed and to plicate or bunch up,” Richard says.

“It was clear she had again eaten something she wasn’t supposed to.”

Dr Thea Taylor removed the offending item – this time a tea towel – and Tiggi hasn’t looked back since!

Opening up the gut of an animal always requires special care and vigilance to prevent contamination of the abdominal cavity and infection. For Tiggi, the surgery went well and was the only option for her to get better. “Tiggi had a very uneventful recovery, which is just what we want.”

Dr Woods says the act of leaving one’s mark – from cave markings to contemporary muralism – is “something that’s been occurring basically throughout time. You’ll find graffiti in some of the most obscure, out of the way places.”

The artworks were commissioned either through local government or cultural institutions, one by a major insurance company, while others were part of street festivals. The tour puts graffiti, murals and street art in both a local and global context.

As well as walking tours, Watch This Space offers a free interactive map for phones, iPads or computers.

Proceeds from tours go back into the organisation to maintain and update its map and written content.

ith a shift in gender boundaries that is less revolutionary than evolutionary, the modern day blurring of the sexes has been the organic development of a changing attitude in global culture as a whole. The upshot: more choice and not just for the risk-takers on fashion’s cutting edge.

Back in August when Pink accepted the VMAs Video Vanguard Award, she recounted how her daughter had once said “I’m the ugliest girl I know… I look like a boy with long hair”.

Pink’s response was a PowerPoint presentation featuring “androgynous rockstars and artists that live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their life, and carry on, wave their flag, and inspire the rest of us”.

Ever since Coco Chanel’s inspiring decision to design pants for women in the early 1900s, modern fashion has challenged perceptions of gender and identity.

Since then Mick Jagger has worn a “man dress” onstage, Vivienne Westwood has dressed herself in the same shredded tees as the Sex Pistols, Jean Paul Gaultier has worn a cone-bra dress for a photoshoot and not so long ago, Gucci sent men down the runway in pussy bows and cardigans.

Here, we pay respect to some of androgyny’s most beautiful champions, with a mood board of inspiration because, in Pink’s words, pioneers from David Bowie to Annie Lennox “help other people to change so they can see more kinds of beauty” and we think that’s a beautiful thing.

Sarah’s hairdressing career evolved so organically, there was never any question of what direction she wanted to take.

A

s a plucky nine-year-old, she offered to help out at a salon in a block of shops where her parents owned a bakery. She started out doing odd jobs, such as making coffees and sweeping the floor. The salon owner was so impressed

by Sarah’s work ethic, she began paying her. “I ended up staying there till I was 14 years old,” She says. “After the salon closed, the owner got me an after-school job with another salon and I began an apprenticeship.”

Hair Design and leads a team of four senior stylists. “I started out on my own from a converted garage 10 years ago and started building up a clientele. It grew so much I had to start turning people away, so that’s when I realised I needed to move to a bigger space.”

Sarah renovated a beautiful villa on Colombo Steet in Cashmere and will celebrate five years in the premises in July. Providing a personalised, one on one service to every client is what sets them apart, she says. “We feel it’s really

important for our clients to have the same stylist, from start to finish.”

Also offering make-up and wedding hair services, the salon uses only cruelty-free products and the option of chemical-free hair colours and styling ranges. Sarah’s mum is also a valued member of the team. “Mum takes care of the clients as receptionist/salon assistant and also bakes handmade treats for our clients to enjoy.”

I didn’t know about fashion design, I didn’t have that background as my mother didn’t sew. Though we certainly bought clothes! One of my early jobs was as an in-house model for a shoe company, which I loved! From there on every job I tried to get something with a fashion bent to it.

Through that I met my husband who was very involved in fashion and travelling the world. I was the tag along but deeply fascinated by what they did and frustrated at being on the outside. So fashion has been a long and passionate love affair.

It’s an industry that has been said to not take any prisoners, why do you think you have been able to form such a strong global following?

There’s an old adage in clothing, that you’re only as good as your last range.

There’s never been a truer statement.

It’s all about whether it will sell or not – every piece has to be a ‘fall in love with it’ piece.

There’s a lot of clothing in the world, there’s a lot of choice and price points. Mine is always in the top price point, so I’ve always been driven to create distinction in every piece. I was once told something that has become my mantra – that it must have everything right with it. I want to get an ‘everything right with it’ moment for every piece.

How have you been able to stay current after more than three decades in the fashion limelight?

For me it is about always evolving.

When I went into this business, I went in without training. While that was difficult in the beginning, it has been a blessing because I’ve had to be instinctive about everything I do.

I’ve evolved, I’ve listened to how the market is changing. There’s been a major revolution in clothing in the last five years through social media and e-commerce which has massively changed the dynamic and way in which people buy. They’re relying more on social media.

I educated myself on all the new technology. Business today is completely different to when I started out. We didn’t have a graphics team, or a social media person. Today Instagram queens can’t be seen in the same outfit twice, so now we

sell to rental places. Five years ago, that business didn’t exist. It’s about constantly keeping an open mind and being open to change.

How would you describe your style evolution?

I always like to say my pieces are timeless and I still believe a great deal are, but I still like to keep current with what’s happening in fashion.

I’m a believer that the only fashion you need is that which makes you feel confident and beautiful. My style has evolved because of that philosophy. Fashion is ever-changing.

In New Zealand we have a really small population. So I can’t come out with lime green this season and next season as well. I’m incredibly lucky to be able to travel, I go to a lot of fabric fairs, I follow Instagram and what’s happening globally. It’s my passion, it’s what I love to do.

As the largest specialist colorectal practice in the South Island, Christchurch Colorectal is at the forefront of combating bowel cancer, which is particularly important in New Zealand given the country has one of the highest bowel cancer rates in the world and it is the second highest cause of cancer death in this country. More than 3000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year and more than 1200 die from the disease.

Bowel cancer is more common as you get older, particularly from the age of 50. Common signs and symptoms may include changes in the normal pattern of going to the toilet that continue for several weeks (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely), blood in your bowel motion, tiredness and weight loss.

Christchurch Colorectal advises that vigilance is key – any concerns or symptoms should be addressed, particularly when there is a family history of bowel cancer.

You can make an appointment for a diagnostic colonoscopy with Christchurch Colorectal. Bowel cancer can be more successfully treated – with a 90 percent chance of long-term survival – if detected early.

If there is a delay in diagnosis and treatment and the cancer is more advanced, it is harder to cure. So the clinic’s advice is ‘don’t delay’. Even if there is no evidence of a malignant tumour there may be pre-cancerous polyps – most can be excised at the time of colonoscopy. Most bowel cancers develop from benign polyps so all but the smallest should be removed to ensure they don’t turn into cancer.

a little bitof home Perhaps one of the last things you might expect to find in the rural backblocks of Canterbury is an authentic Thai restaurant, nestled among fruit and hazelnut trees. Nevertheless, there it is. Lemongrass.

F

or Sriamorn Reavill, Lemongrass is a dream come true. From her childhood in Chachoengsao, near Bangkok, where she learned from her grandmother the essence of food preparation and sharing, to an orchard in Loburn, her journey has been an eventful one.

She met English born Paul in Thailand, married in 2003 and, six years later, found herself in Lincoln, with a dream of opening her own restaurant. While on a visit home, a tarot card reader told her she would soon own a property with a pair of two-storey buildings. “That’s rubbish,” she thought because, at the time, she and Paul were building a one-storey house in Lincoln.

Fast forward, post-earthquakes, a property in Loburn is available. Paul wants it; Sriamorn is reluctant; until she sees it and falls instantly in love. It has two buildings, each with two storeys. They moved and, after some extensions designed and built by architect Paul, Lemongrass was born.

It is a special place. Quiet.

Secluded. Open seven days for lunch and dinner, Sriamorn has bought elements of her childhood to the menu. Using local fare, the Thai beef salad, she says, “never disappoints”.

With other dishes such as Kai Phad King, Panang Beef Sirloin Curry and tasty desserts, the drive into the country is well worth it.

The clinking of wine glasses has been a symbolic acknowledgement of success for almost as long as wine glasses have been used to consume our favourite tipples. So the clinking of glasses will have taken on special meaning for one of Canterbury’s own – Dom Maxwell of Greystone Wines – as he was named the New Zealand Winemaker of the Year 2018 in the inaugural Gourmet Traveller Wine last month.

he judges said Dom’s fusion of traditional winemaking and groundbreaking techniques (notably vineyard fermentations) earned him the accolade, which propels him into New Zealand’s winemaking history.

This is the first year Gourmet Traveller WINE has run the award in New Zealand and the 20th year it has run in Australia.

Framing specialists Lynn and Graham Barr are experts at framing anything such as photos, paintings, stitch-works and memorabilia. However, it’s the difficult framing jobs that Graham enjoys. “We pride ourselves on taking framing jobs others say no to,” Lynn says.

or example, a local trotting enthusiast requested the framing for display of the full-length driver’s suit of famed Canadian trotting driver, John Campbell. Several other framing companies had declined, but Graham accepted the challenge and completed the job.

Your cakes are extraordinary – where do you get your inspiration?

I like to be creative and design my own cakes, even if it means putting my spin on a popular trend. Weddings are a big focus and I love working with couples to create something unique that tells their story, or brings in details from their wedding. I encourage clients to bring me noncake inspiration. Nature, art, fashion, interior design, architecture all have so many textures and details that can be translated into cake design.

Was baking always a great love?

I’ve always loved cooking, in particular experimenting. Alongside that I’ve always been pretty crafty. When I had kids, I discovered cake decorating and it seemed like two things I loved were coming together. So now I love the baking and decorating parts equally and enjoy the challenge of creating something that not only looks great, but tastes yum too.

What have been some of your favourite designs?

I’ve had the chance to do some epic wedding cakes. I love it when a couple is willing to try a design that’s a little different to the norm. One was a winter wedding – the cake travelled for an hour and was the tallest I’ve ever done! My cake tiers are a standard four layers of cake high, but this was two tiers at eight layers high each.

Moroccan Meatballs with couscous salad Serves: 5

Cumin, coriander and turmeric are all popular spices in Moroccan cuisine. Enjoy these fragrant flavours, meatball-style!

PREP TIME: 10 mins

COOK TIME: 20 mins

Preheat oven to 220°C and position oven rack in centre of oven. Lightly grease a large casserole dish (measuring about 25cm x 35cm) and place into oven to preheat. Bring a full kettle to the boil. Bring a small pot of salted water to the boil.

Preheat barbecue hot plate to mediumhigh (if using to cook meatballs).

Place all Moroccan meatball ingredients in a large bowl and mix well using clean hands. Roll into golf-ball-sized balls.

Carefully place into preheated baking dish in a single layer and bake for 13–15 minutes, until cooked through. Turn oven setting to grill (leaving oven rack in centre of oven) and grill meatballs for 2–3 minutes, until golden. Alternatively, cook on barbecue hot plate for 8–9 minutes, turning often, until cooked through.

While meatballs cook, prepare the rest of the meal. In a large, heat-proof bowl, combine boiling water, couscous and salt.

Stir, cover and leave to swell for 5 minutes.

Fluff up grains with a fork.

Prepare veggies. Cook broccoli in pot of boiling water for 3–4 minutes, until bright green and tender. Drain, place under cold, running water to cool and drain again. Quarter cucumber lengthways and dice into 1cm pieces; grate carrot. Stir all veggies through cooked couscous, along with vinegar and olive oil. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

In a small bowl, mix sour cream with second measure of Moroccan spice mix (if using).

To serve, divide couscous salad among plates and top with a few Moroccan meatballs. Spoon over sour cream.

If you’ve ever had a moment where one of the trending food topics has left you red faced as you’re not in the know, you’re not alone. Cuisine is a moveable feast and is always serving up new ideas. Here’s the lowdown on a few favourites right now.

1.

FUNCTIONAL MUSHROOMS: hailed as one of ‘the’ hottest foods for 2018, a functional mushroom is much easier to digest than its seemingly abstract moniker! Also known as medicinal mushrooms, this ancient food comes in multiple varieties from Reishi to Chaga to Lion’s Mane. These fungi friends are very effective foods as they are herbs and adaptogenic – put simply, thewy help the body respond to a wide range of stressors and normalise body functions. Every type of mushroom has its own benefits and a long history – Shiitake really captures the attention. Its medicinal properties were valued and became widespread during the Ming Dynasty and as well as supporting the immune system, the pharmaceutical Lentinan was extracted from the Shiitake mushroom and is the third most widely prescribed anticancer drug in the world.

King of the culinary castle for some time now, a mention of superfood ‘kale’ will still raise the odd quizzical eyebrow. It’s a cruciferous vegetable rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre and protein.

Kale has a split personality - one with smooth leaves and one which is curly giving the leaves a crinkly look. Most commonly boiled (but also great in a steamer or in the pan), it becomes increasingly bitter over time, so is best enjoyed within two or three days. Be picky when it comes to the crop you chose heads of kale on the smaller side are better as they’re more tender.

Leaves should be crisp and bright in colour.

TURMERIC: used in India for millennia, the bright yellow spice turmeric has become a headline grabber, courting attention thanks to its medicinal properties. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric and offers powerful antiinflammatory effects as well as being a strong antioxidant.

ingredients 180ml any milk 140g dark (70%–85%) chocolate, broken into squares 3 tablespoons maple syrup 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

to serve: SEA SALT FLAKES: 1 handful of fresh raspberries or cherries or a mixture 1. Gently heat the milk in a saucepan for about 45 seconds until hot all the way through.

2. Place 120g of the chocolate in a high-powered blender or food processor with the maple syrup, egg and vanilla extract.

3. Very carefully pour a quarter of the hot milk into the blender or food processor (or use a ladle, if you prefer) and blend until smooth, then repeat, adding a quarter of the milk at a time, until all the milk is combined and the mixture is silky smooth. (You need to add the hot milk slowly so that it doesn’t scramble the egg.)

4. Pour into four small ramekins or glasses and leave in the fridge for a minimum of 1½ hours, or 1 hour in the freezer, to set.

Popular pizzeria Spagalimis Pizzeria opened its doors in Christchurch in May 1978, serving pizzas to locals and visitors ever since. Believed to be the oldest restaurant in Christchurch, it is proud to continue the same traditions since it first opened on the corner of Kilmore and Colombo Streets.

he pizzeria is now located in the wooden building on the corner of Salisbury and Montreal Streets which was built in 1899. Extensively repaired after the earthquakes, it is the perfect fit for the pizzeria, with two dining rooms, a private dining room and a trendy bar area. The outdoor deck is a favourite spot for a glass of wine or pint of beer sitting amongst the terracotta flower pots.

The pizza menu is extensive with something for everyone. From the traditional and always popular Spags Special through to the on-point Lime Chicken, no one is left out. All dietary requirements are covered, with gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options.

Pastas and salads are also available and the beverage list is very exciting.

Plus, it’s great to see a real size pint being served.

The pizzeria is a great spot for a quiet meal for two or a group. The private dining room is a unique space perfect for any sized group to enjoy a fun night together. A NAME

Artisan salt expert Michelle Devereux from Saveur de Sel recently released a new salt blend for summer and Metropol readers were given the incredible opportunity to name this delicious new culinary creation.

N

ow called Bella Roma, the mix of oregano, rosemary, sage, parsley and a dash of lemon was named by Marie Marshall, as judged by Michelle and local culinary expert Mark McCracken of Comber Cuisine.

Marie took home a prize pack including the new blend which works well with meat, pasta, vegetables, as well as egg and cheese dishes.

More than 90 entries were whittled down to 10 finalists, with the nine shortlisted entries also receiving a sample of the successful new seasoning, which is just the first in a series of world salts Saveur de Sel will be producing. Not sure about you, but we’re excited to see what’s coming!

Crispy skin fish fillets & new potato salad

A

friend was lucky enough to share in some locally caught Canterbury Kingfish. This recipe will do any other firm white fish justice, matching fresh flavours and simplicity to deliver a delicious summer dish.

500gm Kingfish fillets, skin on New season potatoes 100ml Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard 2 tbsp red wine vinegar Zest and juice of a lemon Salt and pepper 1 shallot, finely diced Small bunch of basil leaves 2 tsp capers (optional) 50gm gherkins, diced (optional) Potato salad: 1. Cook the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and keep warm 2. Combine olive oil, mustard, vinegar, lemon zest and juice.

Season with salt and pepper.

3. While potatoes are warm, pour over the dressing and add olives, capers, shallot and gherkins. Set aside and keep warm.

Fish: 1. Preheat a BBQ or pan to medium heat.

2. Brush the fillets with oil and season with salt and pepper.

Place the fish skin side down on the BBQ or fry pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, turning once.

3. Add torn basil to the potato salad.

4. Divide potato salad among 4 plates, top with BBQ fish and serve with a small green salad.

rom Friday 9th to Sunday 11th March, the Alpine village will provide the stunning setting and become host to the Festival of Voices. Anyone is welcome to either participate and empower their vocals, or to simply singalong and enjoy the performances held at Hanmer Springs Alpine Memorial Hall.

One of the talented tutors and coordinators, Lisa Tui Jonathon, says Hanmer already has a strong singing community and this inaugural

event supports world music, acapella and a community singing together. She attended the incredible Festival of Voices in Tasmania, which attracted participants worldwide, and hopes this year’s inaugural event for New Zealand will be just the starting note.

The festival involves four workshops for songsters and song leaders, of all abilities, and three performances in a variety of genres.

Including Saturday morning’s pop-up choirs in the village, events will crescendo over the melodious weekend, until Sunday’s Concert Finale.

Inspirational tutors include revered singer Naomi Van den Broek and Julian Hay of Voice Co fame, winners of TV1’s The Naked Choir, and special guests at the soiree on the Saturday night. Fortuitously, awardwinning New Zealand icon Jason Kerrison will be in concert at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa on the Saturday, 9 March.

And prior to this unmissable weekend on Saturday 3 March, Parabola West will showcase at a house concert in Hanmer, with her eclectic mix of Celtic, Nordic, folk and electronica.

IKON Architects has long been involved in the planning and development of St Thomas of Canterbury College’s campus and is pleased to see the completion of the latest addition – the new multipurpose science and technology learning studio.

A

significant building programme has seen the development of the two-storey

Mt Sion learning centre and the replacement of earthquake prone or damaged buildings

with a new multipurpose gymnasium complex and learning studio.

The gymnasium and learning studio have been realised through a collaborative partnership with Apollo Projects. Replacing a significant amount of building stock with a limited budget was a challenge but both projects were successfully delivered with Ikon and Apollo working together in a fast-tracked design and build process.

Both projects are constructed using prefinished insulated Kingspan cladding panels. A key element in their costeffective construction, the panels form both a durable cladding and interior lining, with exposed structure creating a refined semi-industrial feel.

The learning studio features three large interlinked teaching spaces with several breakout rooms which can be subdivided by large glazed sliding doors.

With a simple neutral colour palette, more vibrant colours are used in floor and wall finishes to define breakout zones and staff areas. Exterior colour highlights key features, such as the red canted colonnade that frames the exterior courtyard and ties the building in with the established context.

St Thomas’s is now in a great position to continue to provide high quality education thanks to the innovative design approach of Ikon Architects and close collaboration with Apollo Projects.

irector, Grant Irving, established his building company in 2008. He’s been in the building trade in Christchurch all of his adult life and has a vast amount of experience. Have you ever celebrated a birthday and stopped to wonder exactly where that year (or years!) has gone? It comes upon you as either a pleasant surprise or a deep awakening, and the nostalgia it creates leaves you remembering what happened whilst posing the question, how did I fare?

I’m doing just that as I wish Harcourts gold a happy birthday. From small beginnings to great success on an international stage, being named the No. 1 franchise in New Zealand consecutively and having the No. 1 office for Harcourts worldwide for three of the past five years, as well as Papanui being the No. 1 office in Christchurch and New Zealand, this company has become an integral part of who we are as leaders in our industry and members of the community.

Twenty years ago, my husband John and I started in business by purchasing one suburban real estate office. It was situated in Papanui and had been left leaderless after the tragic suicide of its then owner. Understandably, the small team of consultants, the caretaker manager and the owners of the few properties listed were in a transition stage whilst the business was put up for sale.

It was a nervous time: we were members of a four-person group seeking to purchase the business and with three of us already working at a large successful competitor’s office, it’s fair to say our purchase didn’t make us flavour of the month!

Leaving where we were was very tough, paying off the loans that allowed us to purchase the business even tougher, whilst the workload mentally and physically was exhausting. Having our youngest son not too far into ownership also added to the complexity of building a business. A new baby who didn’t sleep, a business in growth mode and the expectation to sell fulltime wasn’t easy, and I will remain forever grateful for the family support I received during that time.

But slowly, and then not so slowly, the tide started turning.

Like all home-grown success stories, whilst the start is often simple, momentum creates its own magic – as does innovation, luck, a massive work ethic and an unholy drive to succeed. One office rapidly became four, and those four original offices still comprise much of the business we know today.

But it hasn’t always been a linear journey.

At one time the company mushroomed to include seven offices with branches on the West Coast and Wanaka. Logistically, this was difficult and meant John would clock up enormous hours and miles traversing the country to oversee the various offices.

I look back and wonder at his endurance.

Later, a near-fatal crash in Wanaka whilst John and our two sons were travelling as passengers with another driver, and an admission that we felt stretched, meant we went back to our Christchurch roots and

sold the outlying offices to colleagues.

Not partnership changes, market movements, earthquakes nor any of the other many struggles along the way have caused us to lose our commitment to our industry, our business or our people, and the incredible pace has meant the last twenty years has gone by in a flash.

From one office to five … 17 listings to 1,300 per year … 10 people to 123 – it’s been such a privilege.

The lessons learnt have been huge.

Two that stand out for me include: • There is no such thing as work smart, not hard.

Sorry. To succeed you will have to do both.

• Get a business mentor. For most of our years in the industry we have worked with Gilbert Enoka. It has been enlightening, encouraging and essential.

There you have it. I love birthdays and this one feels very special. Let me say, on behalf of the team, thank you to everyone who has made the twenty years so worthwhile.

Andrea says their design aesthetic remains very stable – they don’t follow trends, believing that if the design is classic and done well, it will last the distance and the client will love it for life.

Current favourite fabrics for Alex are stripes and florals “but we both have really broad tastes which helps us to engage with clients. We go in with flexible minds and get in tune with people.”

“Everyone has an opinion, even if they think they don’t they will have personal likes and dislikes,” Andrea says. “We never impose our desires on them, and the design has to fit with their lifestyle.”

This design duo will do the whole process for you, from inception through to procurement. It can be a whole-room or house concept from scratch, but they are just as happy to add the perfect finishing touches to your ideas. “We can work within anyone’s budget regardless, and create a lovely look,” Andrea says.

They start with finding out what a client already has or would like to use, then work out how to get maximum value for money with changes and additions. A gentle upgrade could consist of new wallpaper or curtains, or simply reupholstery of favourite pieces.

There is a huge library of textiles at the showroom and people are welcome to browse. The pair will do in-store consultations, or come to you at home. Alex and Andrea’s reputation is widespread, many clients come through referrals, and recently they’ve worked in Hawkes Bay and Wanaka. wise man once said to me ‘if it’s not funny, you’re looking at it the wrong way’. And, although one could certainly argue that there is plenty in the world that doesn’t tickle the funny bone, when it comes to defining the all-encompassing nature of perspective, it’s proverbially on point.

While some saw the post-quake central city as a veritable waste land, others saw its potential. Our architectural visionaries not only had the drive and determination to bring these heritage buildings back to life, but they had the courage to see some pretty difficult projects through to the finish.

One such visionary is Shaun Stockman.

The name behind some of Christchurch’s biggest and brightest post-quake redevelopments, Stockman has become one of the city’s most ardent supporters and one who has maintained his tireless campaign to invigorate the central core.

People, he says, are the heart of a vibrant, thriving central city and creating a space to draw them back in is what drives him.

We talk to Stockman about his favourite Christchurch buildings, on page 107 and profile one of his latest projects. The Victoria Black building at 199-201 High Street was set in what was a bustling retail hub 150 years ago and, with the architectural vision of the likes of Shaun Stockman in its corner, the central city is again making good on this promise.

reparing yourself for the future will be essential and there is no better time than the new year.

Change is everywhere, and the pace has never been faster, whether it is new government policy, climate change or digital disruption.

Take technology for example – many New Zealand businesses are already behind when it comes to adopting new technologies. Changing your mindset to thinking about the opportunities that technology will bring and not wanting to miss out, rather than focusing on the cost and other barriers, is a good way to start.

Think about the changes that your industry may face from digital disruption.

Think about technology from outside your industry that may have an impact on your business. Think about how you might refocus your resources and respond. And think about how you might be able to take advantage of the change.

Take the time out from your day to day and start a conversation with someone with a different perspective – a scientist, a graduate, a next gen-er. Be open. Listen to new ideas.

Look out for the warning signs of disruption – be alert to the signals and work out how you can respond.

Accept that change is inevitable. View it as an opportunity, not a threat. The right mindset and the right environment for change can transform your business.

The chamber will support our members through this. Our organisation is also impacted by the change and we will have to adapt and evolve, while at the same time supporting our members.

n 2018 Ōtākaro will get out on the road.

We have three main areas of work.

Manchester Street beside the East Frame, and Durham Street and Hospital Corner which adjoin the Avon River Precinct.

Most will be finished mid-year.

It is not a simple resurfacing job.

Behind the fences, contractors are completely digging out the old road, replacing metre after metre of broken pipe and suspect cable, before laying new structural layers to support a smooth road, paved and shared paths, bus stops and garden beds.

One of the most significant challenges is that not all the existing services under the road are exactly where the old plans say they will be. When the crews dig up the ground and find something unexpected they must treat the services as live. It could be a safety hazard or providing essential water, power, wastewater or telecommunications to a nearby business. Once contractors know what it is, they must work out whether it is best to go around it or move it. This can mean a redesign of the plan, which takes time and limits the work that can be done in the interim.

We’re now seeing the results. On Manchester Street alone, many of the 398,000 pavers that will line the street have been laid; 170 new trees have been planted; there’s 5.5 kilometres of new kerbing in place and underground there’s 700 metres of new stormwater pipe, with more to come. We appreciate your patience during the push to the finish.

T

he country is obsessed with the ‘housing crisis’. The reality is the ‘housing crisis’ is not a nationwide problem but an Auckland problem. You’d be hard pushed to convince me there is an issue with finding an affordable house for a first home buyer in Dunedin, Buller, Greymouth, Whangarei or even Christchurch.

In my opinion the real crisis is the impending ‘rental crisis’. Recent governments have bowed to public pressure, introducing measures to make it harder for the private sector to provide residential rental accommodation. These appear to have been introduced to pave the way for first home buyers to be able to purchase their own homes.

There is now an under-supply of residential rental accommodation in most parts of the country, further exacerbated by the popularity of Air-bnb.

Supply and demand problems haven’t yet affected Christchurch which is still a renter’s market, likely because of the Canterbury earthquakes, which resulted in the fast-tracking of subdivisions (and, in some cases, rezoning of land) that was the catalyst for a building boom in the following years. The introduction of ‘as is where is’ properties, is also likely to be a contributory factor.

If Christchurch is affected by the ‘rental crisis’, the blame should be firmly laid with the Government, which has created an environment that victimises the people in society who require reliable, affordable, long-term residential rental accommodation. The Government is removing the private sector from the residential rental market, that will leave the government as the sole provider of residential rental accommodation.

he year 2018 is shaping up as an exciting and busy one, not just for Regenerate Christchurch, but also for Christchurch as a whole.

In the central city, it’s exciting to see momentum gathering from both private and public investment, as events, new projects and businesses attract people back to the heart of Christchurch and continue to transform our city.

One of the most significant events in early 2018, will be a major public exhibition for the 602-hectare Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor Regeneration Area.

This is the former red zone section of the city from Barbadoes Street to Bexley and New Brighton.

The exhibition will take people on an interactive journey through where we’ve come from, the future, the costs and benefits, and the likely timeframes. There will be many opportunities for public feedback, including online.

We’ll also have mobile teams visiting key gathering points (such as shopping centres and events) to give people more opportunities to take a look and have a say.

Following the exhibition, we’ll prepare a draft Regeneration Plan which will be completed by September – including a preferred land use plan for the area.

Again, we’ll provide people with the opportunity to have a say on this draft plan, which will confirm responsibilities for funding, delivery and governance. It is expected to be finalised by the end of 2018.

This is the country’s largest regeneration opportunity, one that can transform both Christchurch and New Zealand. We’re very excited about the future of our city.

B

efore the election we set ourselves some hefty targets of what we wanted to achieve in our first 100 days.

From the Prime Minister on down, we were clear we wanted to hit the ground running and show exactly what type of government we would be right from the outset. It’s been a whirlwind time as we have made good on our promises.

We’ve helped make housing more affordable for Kiwi families by introducing legislation to ban overseas speculators from buying our houses. We’ve introduced new standards for rental accommodation, so everyone can grow up in a home that is warm, safe and dry.

We extended paid parental leave, boosted Working for Families, raised the minimum wage and set out to boost the powers of the consumer watchdog the Commerce Commission when it comes to the prices consumers are paying at the pump.

We’ve stopped the state house selloff, we’ve made post-secondary school education more affordable and launched our mental health review.

In Canterbury, we’ve begun work on an independent enquiry into EQC, new support for mental health and ways to get the Metro Sports Facility project back on track after the $75m budget blowout under the previous government.

Here locally, we know we have more to do: we’ve got plans to further boost the local economy with research and development tax credits, invest in public transport to free up congestion and speed up the recovery of our city. It’s an exciting time and the best is yet to come.

T

here’s a lot of talk about needing to attract new capital to Christchurch, in particular, the central city.

But, we don’t talk enough about the need to encourage more human capital to Christchurch from the international talent pool. This human capital might take the form of new migrants or expats, with many of the latter now signalling a desire to return home.

What both groups offer Christchurch is diversity, an invaluable global perspective, new networks and, often, investment capital.

We’re currently fielding a lot of enquiries from expats who, when visiting family during the holidays, have noticed the growth in the city since last time they were here. They are definitely eyeing up the immense opportunities and lifestyle Christchurch offers.

Increasingly, recognising the value of a global perspective is part of the changing nature of the recruitment market and what employers value. Sure, there’s a requirement for the core skills but we’re seeing a lot more emphasis on the softer skills; the ability to have emotional intelligence, build meaningful relationships, lead, analyse, problem solve and think on your feet.

The environment we operate in now is far more dynamic with technology and disruption coming at us at a rate of knots. You can see it as a threat or an opportunity. The companies that engage new team members who can adapt quickly, identify and analyse where the opportunities and challenges lie, will be the ones that will be best positioned to take advantage of these opportunities moving forward.

China, India, Dubai develop with extreme speed. A primary reason for this is that the regulations change responsibly with the develpoments, rather than the developments working within a set of rules.

A reactive regulation prescribes what you can and can’t do based on a strict set of guidelines. A proactive, performancedriven regulation breeds creativity, conscious and thoughtful design and truly embraces the profession of architecture and trusts our architects and designers to utilise their skills and expertise.

How does the construction industry need to grow and evolve to meet the world’s changing needs?

When we look at a great car company who produce only five car models, we don’t dismiss them because of their limited range – we select the car that will offer us the best design for our needs. We seem not to think like this when it comes to the buildings we create.

Vehicle manufacturing processes are becoming more adaptable to change and yet, when we look at construction, we still hammer a nail into wood, or put a bolt through steel, on site, in all weather conditions despite the available technology utilised in all other industries.

Buildings consume over half the world’s energy, and utilise over half the world’s

natural resources, yet the automobile industry is 90 percent cleaner than 20 years ago despite increasing production.

By looking at a manufacturing model in the construction of buildings, we have the opportunity to create cleaner and more adaptable buildings. We can create new industry related jobs, new industry efficiencies by utilising the tried and tested products and work collaboratively together with other industries and industry organisations and regulation writers. We should be focussing on buildings having a conscious contribution to our lives and our world, rather than focussing energy on practices that we have been completing since the hammer replaced rock on the end of a stick.

In a city which is rebuilding at a rapid pace, what are some of the key challenges?

It appears there have been significant stopping blocks in the way of progress.

Whilst the re-construction of Christchurch is moving ahead rapidly now, I can’t help but wonder what may have happened had an alternative throught process be utilised when looking at rules and regulations.

ut the sense of change has been far from skin deep, as the city has gone from rebuild to reinvention and Mayor Lianne Dalziel has been able to witness the transformation first hand.

Her role hasn’t been an easy one. In the five years since Dalziel became the 46th Mayor of Christchurch she has battled fires – both in the literal and figurative sense – and yet, despite the enormous hurdles, she remains determined to seize the enormous opportunities created by the earthquakes to reinvent our city and define our future.

A “fierce advocate” of her city of birth, Mayor Dalziel says Christchurch is experiencing a metamorphosis of change as we evolve to meet the changing needs of the modern day. “The city is now reinventing itself and becoming more innovative, creative and focused on sustainability, environmental protection and food resilience,” she says.

Projects like the development of New Zealand’s first urban food hub, Ōtākaro Orchard, are proving that community-led progress creates valuable and meaningful outcomes. “Christchurch has a really important part to play in finding some of the solutions to questions being asked globally around sustainability and environmental management.

“Innovative design and creative solutions are being applied to community-centric spaces throughout the city and the wider region.”

People often don’t realise “just how hightech our history is”, she says, including the fact that several high-profile pioneers of technology have their roots in the region, such as innovative engineer and motorcycle designer John Britten.

The city’s spirit of reinvention following the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 has won international acclaim and resulted in “an overall feeling of a city where anything is possible. We’re open to new people, new ideas and new ways of doing things”.

She encourages visitors to keep coming back to Christchurch see the progress “as we turn New Zealand’s oldest city into New Zealand’s newest”.

Silt zero treatment The chemical-free way of removing silt from our precious soils during site excavation.

W

e live in a beautiful city aptly named ‘The Garden City’ however, after recent traumatic seismic events and the large-scale development taking place, we could easily be called ‘The Construction City’.

One of the most important questions frequently raised by experts who care for our environment in relation to all this activity is “are we adequately protecting our soil, streams and environment?”

A key issue during earthworks is the removal of wastewater from a site which meets Ecan’s minimum standards. The Silt Zero treatment system is a fully automated containerised system for removing suspended solids from storm water, without dosing with chemical flocculants.

Better yet, it delivers pure crystal-clear water, regardless of its original state.

A revolutionary break-through, the Silt Zero system avoids the price of dealing with chemical by-products that have a flow on effect on water, wildlife and soil quality for many years.

It was developed by Andrew Tisch, founder of e2Environmental, a Christchurch civil engineering consultancy which specialises in storm water engineering and land development.

Designed to meet an increasing regula-tory need for the control and continuous monitoring of suspended solids concentrations in storm water discharge from development sites, the system comes into its own around the Christchurch Port Hills area where very fine loess solids don’t settle out in traditional gravity

Muddy water is pumped from the pond into the containerised system where the extraction of impurities is done automatically and the water is pumped out crystal-clear.

The process involves various stages of treatment, clarifying and filtration, the outcome of which is clear water with a solids concentration of less than the 50ppm requirement typically used by ECan for discharge to spring-fed streams. The Silt Zero Treatment system guarantees to reach Ecan’s standard.

Testing and commissioning of the system has been completed and it is now available to come to your site on either a purchase or hire service contract, providing either a temporary emergency system for a construction site on a lease basis or a permanent fixture on sites that require ongoing silt treatment.

Once set up and the perimeters are programmed, the fully-automated system does all the work. All that is visible on site is a new 20-foot shipping container and a settlement skip. The only other equipment is a discreet pontoon-mounted submersible pump in the retention pond, along with some ancillary PVC hoses and cabling.

Once the waste product is separated, it is safely disposed of or recycled.

Other applications include, heavy metal reduction in storm water, oils, paint, coal, dye and other waterborne contaminant removal.

From a conservative post-Victorian city to a bold and innovative urban hot spot, Christchurch has emerged as a province that packs a proverbial punch.

irst it was our architecture and now it’s our activities which are driving this exciting change and commanding attention, not just on a national level but now an international one as burgeoning tourism numbers enable us to play host to an increasing number of high profile events.

Two entrepreneurs have launched a startup that makes it easy to source these events. After moving back to Wellington last year, Katy Wilson

DNG CONSTRUCTION – OLD CAFFE ROMA BUILDING Francesca’s Italian Kitchen and Crane Brothers will make their homes in the Caffe Roma building

ith a brunch restaurant (created by the team that gifted Francesca’s Italian Kitchens to the citizens of four lucky South Island towns) going in the Caffe Roma space along with Crane Brothers, it seems likely The Midland Club Building will shortly gain an affectionate new title.

DNG Construction has already done three fitouts for the clients, including Francesca’s in the Isaac Theatre Royal, and is thrilled to complete this one in another beloved historic building. 360 Architecture’s design had to work within the restrictions imposed by the building’s heritage status: the 1930s building contains heart rimu panelling and kauri floors, stained-glass windows, ceiling roses, cornices and original fireplaces.

Pureh20 to go Cr Jamie Gough tells us why this matter is so close to his heart.

Why is the water chlorination issue such an important one to you?

Water is just so important to Christchurch in general. Pure, untreated water is one of our greatest assets, so adding anything to it, albeit temporary, doesn’t sit comfortably with me.

How complex was this decision?

It was going to happen whether we liked it or not. On one hand we could do it in partnership with the Crown and Medical Officer, then have it removed prior to the end of the year once the well-heads are fixed. On the other hand, if we said no, it was clearly going to be imposed on us anyway and as a result, risk not being able to have it removed after the work is completed. The irony is shortterm chlorination will likely ensure it won’t be required in the long-term.

Are you comfortable with the decision to temporarily treat the water supply and what do you think the approach should be moving forward?

It wasn’t a decision that I was happy to make, but it was the right one. With my own business dealings I’m open to moderate risk – in fact I quite enjoy it. With public money, my risk-appetite is considerably lower. When it comes to the public’s health and wellbeing, I don’t think there is a healthy amount of risk to assume, so my appetite for it is essentially nil.

You have a young baby, how much more passionate does that make you about issues?

My wife and I have a five-month-old baby. Nothing puts life into perspective like having a child. The reality is, three people died in Havelock North due to public water contamination. If the law allowed me to hold councillors personally liable, I would crucify any councillors who knowingly allowed a contamination risk of the public water supply resulting in harm to my little boy.

It’s the only major New Zealand city without a chlorinated water supply, now Christchurch’s underground aquiferfed water system is being temporarily chlorinated to protect public health, after it was discovered some of the city’s well heads were unsafe.

What is your preferred approach long term?

We’ll accelerate the work that needs to be undertaken on the well-heads to ensure our water is back to its pure and pristine best as soon as practically possible.

The comprehensive work will mean our water supply is significantly safer going forward so temporary measures like this in future will be highly unlikely. Apparently chilling chlorinated water in the fridge gets rid of a lot of the chlorine-taste, so I’m thinking chilled water with a slice of lemon might be in order for the next wee while!

build How do you think the overall rebuild is going?

The inner city is buzzing with the Cashel Mall seeing some major developments like the Crossing, BNZ Centre and Triangle Centre complete. Equally, there is development in Manchester with the new Quest Hotel nearing completion, with the likes of streets like Southwark – Walker and Welles emerging as very hip with the re-purposing of older what were industrial buildings.

The completion of the walkway through the East frame that links the Lichfield Lanes to Margaret Mahy Park is a pleasant walk. We have the new Hoyts to look forward to and Ballantyne’s are rebuilding a large section of their retail premises.

What we are lacking is the residential in the East Frame, albeit it is underway but I feel this is essential to bring younger people into city life.

The Metro sports centre was always going to be a hard one, given the land that was chosen to place it on, but I feel we should forge ahead with it, in my view as a community we have lost so much and to have this would be great.

taking stock Shaun Stockman is the passionate central city developer behind the redevelopment of many of Christchurch’s most beloved historic buildings, including Stranges Lane in High Street and Kensington House in Manchester Street.

We talk to Shaun about his favourite buildings and profile one of his latest projects – 199-201 High Street – on pages 111-113.

What are some of your favourite buildings – both new and old?

The new section of the Crossing is my favourite new building because of the interesting mix of facades and materials; it just makes it so interesting to look at and does not just look like a shopping centre.

My favourite older building is the Old Government Building in the square it has strong lines and gives a solid vibe, it’s also is great to see it being used.

What do you see as some of the challenges facing the city as we move forward?

The balance of carparks available on the street is huge in my view, as the malls have good parking so we must compete.

Whilst I believe we have to accommodate cyclists, we must keep the balance of keeping people in jobs and businesses able to function with accessibility. The sports centre challenge is also paramount in my view.

What does 2018 have in store for you?

I am just finishing the replacement Billens building now, and have the Victoria Black Building at 199-201 High Street in planning, and I am aiming to be building by the last quarter of this year.

I am also involved in 34-38 Southwark Street with what was WL Browns Foundry and Engineers buildings, that will be repurposed for office and café use.

“The main area opens to a horizontal series of alcoves, with only three internal doors,” Tim says.

“You can see the horizon through the lounge window from the sleeping bay as the rooms borrow views from each other.”

A north-facing deck meets glass sliders.

Replacing a front door, these create a casual bach feel and views right through the cantilevered picture windows.

“The second vessel, the dining room, was designed as a folly and a space for art. The narrowness and height exaggerates the banquet space.”

The third vessel, the tower, is a reflection of the two-story baches of Hobson’s Bay, with an office/ library and a sleeping loft above.

A woodland retreat

Moved by the primeval indigenous and historic exotic timbers of Hanmer Forest, Architects David Sheppard and Max Warren of Sheppard and Rout have designed a forest homage to the venerable Kiwi holiday houses remembered from past family retreats.

W

ith its woodland setting, David and Max say it felt right to design this house in no-fuss cottage-style, with pitched roof and cleverly positioned windows to frame the sylvan view slots. “It’s important not to make a holiday house simply a scaled down city house,” David says.

Max is pleased with the integrity of the design within its environment. Clad in battened and sealed plywood, the naturally pale colour of the timber will remain but will mellow a little with time.

The colour of the steel roof was chosen to recede into the wooded background. Inside, the colour also largely derives from the materials. Lined with plywood throughout, there is a mix of the natural golden tone, with some walls and ceilings washed in white for balance.

David says the owners were great to work with, they didn’t want anything fussy and were more than pleased with the materials that allowed for an economic build on the compact section.

Hanmer builders O’Brien Construction provided a supremely straightforward process at a great price.

The overall feel of the house is simple but sophisticated, spacious but cosy, an almost Scandinavian sensibility filtered through a traditional Kiwi lens. “The owners have had lots of admiring knocks on the front door,” Max says.

n 1900, noted architects William Clarkson and Robert Ballantyne designed a modest commercial building – one of many they designed – located at what is now 201 High Street. Hosting drapers, tailors, milliners, a watchmaker, a tobacconist and more, that building stood strong for more than a century.

For the last forty years, the property was owned by Barry Watson and, for many of those, it housed his antique auction house and real estate agency. Fashion boutique Victoria Black was its final tenant and now its namesake.

Today, nothing exists of the original building save the façade. But what a façade!

Victorian Free Style, the large arched windows and flanking pilasters and cornice, with intricate relief work, make it unique and beautiful.

“I had to have it,” says property developer Shaun Stockman, who purchased the property, and façade, which now stands alone propped up by shipping containers, in late 2017. “The more you study the façade, the more you fall in love with it.”

Shaun has a lifelong passion for not just rebuilding, but recreating. “We didn’t just buy buildings. We bought something that needed repurposing.”

His company has returned the Stranges Building, including Stranges Lane, Kensington House, and The Exchange, to the cityscape.

And so he intends to return 201 High Street to the city. Office/retail, with construction set to begin later this year, “the challenge for Simon [Simon Geary of CanForm Structures, with whom Shaun has a long working relationship] will be restoring the façade.”

But he has the utmost confidence in his team. “It’s important to me, being instrumental in bringing back that history to High Street.”
