EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

20 YEARS METROPOL

EST: 1998

n 1998, the National – New Zealand First coalition Government was dissolved, leaving the Jenny Shipley-led National Party as a minority government. The women’s rugby team, the Black Ferns, became the world champions. The Hikoi of Hope marches to Parliament called for more support for the poor. And Bic Runga’s Sway became the single of the year. It was also the year Metropol came to fruition. That’s right, this year marks the incredible 20 year anniversary of our esteemed publication. Brought to life through the vision of Trevor Laplanche, who recently handed the publishing reigns over to Murray Dempsey as retirement – or some extremely cute grandkids – beckoned, Metropol is celebrating its 20 year anniversary this year. Though I can’t personally lay claim to any of that success, being here just two percent of those two decades, I am extremely proud to be a part of the Metropol Team as we embark on the next chapter of our publishing story and work towards the next milestone. Reflecting on past success is an integral step in preparing for future success and there’s no doubting that 20 years of producing a fortnightly publication is just that. While the final word on physical immortality may remain in the hands of science, that of Metropol lies with our readers and our loyal advertisers. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts, we look forward to celebrating with you over the next year.

Sounds SHOW-STOPPING

Christchurch is a hotbed of musical talent so we’ve got the lowdown on the latest events for Christchurch music lovers. We’re pleased to bring you a show-stopping selection of powerful performances that will bring music to your ears.

1.

SUNDAY 4 FEBRUARY: DELANEY DAVIDSON & BARRY SAUNDERS Well-known for his hypnotic and original Ghost Orchestra show, Delaney carves out his own space in the musical world, that some call ‘countrynoir’ or ‘gothic americana’ as he plays hypnotic trance takes on old blues classics. His rumpled stage persona combines an unconventional and unforgettable voice with a wry and twisted sense of humour.

3.

Barry Saunders has had a charmed and distinguished career that began when he formed his first band, Orange, to play the Christchurch club circuit in early 1970. These days, you’ll know him as the frontman for Wellington band, The Warratahs.

SUNDAY 18 FEBRUARY: ATLAS ENSEMBLE Christchurch’s new vocal group, the Atlas Voices Ensemble, is commemorating the anniversary of the devastating Christchurch Earthquakes with a special concert presentation designed to recognise the city’s continued resilience and regeneration. A collection of some of the city’s best vocal talent, the group is reinvigorating choral music by presenting a variety of styles under the expert leadership of American maestro, Ravil Atlas.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens, Rolleston Ave, 4 February 3:30pm – 5:00pm

To mark the anniversary of the quake, the group will perform the critically acclaimed Requiem for the Living in the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral. Joining Atlas Voices is noted local soprano Amanda Atlas, along with Burnside High School students and a hand-selected orchestra.

Free admission, more information at www.eventfinda.co.nz

Christchurch Transitional Cathedral 2pm, 18 February 2018 Tickets available from the Court Theatre Box Office

4.

SUNDAY 25 FEBRUARY: THE ALL GIRL BIG BAND In a largely male-dominated musical genre, to see a full jazz big band on stage with a woman in each section is one thing. To find a full big band of women is incredible in itself, add full sections of trombone, trumpet, sax and rhythm with two powerhouse vocalists and you’ll be blown away! Brought to life from out of the creative influence and musical direction of Lana Law and stunning vocals of ARA vocal tutor Kate Taylor, the All Girl Big Band has been a power player of local performances since January 2016.

2.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens, Rolleston Ave 3:30pm – 5:00pm

SATURDAY 10 FEBRUARY: BAROQUE MUSIC COMMUNITY The Baroque Music Community and Educational Trust of New Zealand is excited to announce its upcoming South Island Concert Tour. This year the group is introducing solo dance with Mareike Greb from Germany, an expert in the art of historical dance who performs as a soloist and leader of various dance groups in Europe. Not just a treat for the ears, Mareike will be dancing in authentic Baroque costume to a live Baroque ensemble led by Szabolcs Illes of Hungary. JUST LIKE

HOME

Fitzroy of Merivale is a boutique rest home located just 100 steps from Merivale Mall. One of very few privately owned rest homes, owners Daryn and Vanessa Pirie are active within the home daily.

“W

e really get to know the residents and their families in our unique family environment,” Vanessa Pirie says. “Most of our staff have been with us a long time and provide dedicated care, more intimate than in larger facilities. This makes the transition to their new home with us a smooth one.” Due to the 30-guest maximum, residents develop a trusting relationship with the multi-disciplinary team of highly

skilled healthcare professionals, all of whom are engaged in on-going training and professional development. There is warmth and comfort in the home, a security in knowing needs are met by an engaged team member. The cosy environment offers good food, company and a full programme of activities. Diversional Therapist Jana has just started teaching Tai Chi classes which are fun and popular. A number of rooms have a direct view across the main lawn and gardens and all enjoy

access to their own private courtyard or garden. A clear paved pathway meanders around the entire facility, through perfumed gardens, around mature rhododendrons. Believing dining should always be an enjoyable experience, white tablecloths, linen serviettes and intimate dining room table settings are the norm, as are celebrations – there is a special summer barbeque event coming up. The local affectionate “adopted” cat will no doubt try and get on the guest list.

When you embarked on this career path, could you ever have imagined what lay ahead? When Francis Hooper and I started World in May 1989, we had absolutely no idea where this journey would take us. We were both bored in the jobs we were doing and I was always on the verge of being fired for insubordination. Francis just took the plunge and came home to say he had taken the lease on a 100sq. ft. shop in Auckland’s High Street. I think in retrospect, it made us, as we had pooled our life savings of just $200 each. We had no choice, we were looking down the barrel of a gun. We had a new baby, no family here to help us and we had to make it work. And when I say work, I mean every hour of every day, non-stop. We did everything, we worked in our sleep! Some brands, to me, can appear so fake, almost as if they were conceived in a laboratory, they come up with the perfect formula; they are so contrived. It is all about how much money they can all make and how quickly they can do it. There is no passion, and there always has to be, regardless of what you are doing. Francis and I never did this; it was never about the money and getting rich. If it was about that, we would have done something else! World is nothing more than an extension of Francis and my personalities. Benny Castles joined World from school, and is now a Director and Designer. He has been with us from almost the beginning and grew as we grew, and understands how we think, be it good or bad; he has also become an extension of us! Tell us about the feeling of receiving your New Year Honour. The feeling was indescribable really, just floored. It is very rare that I have nothing to say, but I was flabbergasted,

humbled, elated, proud, grateful and a hundred other emotions, it was not something I had ever thought I could have achieved. If somebody had told me 28 years ago that I would be a Dame, I would have convulsed with laughter, but here we are... The evolution of World has been nothing short of extraordinary. What is your definition of the perfect alchemy for success? There is no perfect alchemy for success, it depends on so many things all coming together. In 1989, Auckland was small, shops closed half day Saturday and all day Sunday. There was no café culture, it was very insular, and we came along with a store concept that New Zealand had never seen the likes of before, and it is still the same today. World is who we are, and you have to be completely true and honest with yourself when you have a brand about what that brand is.

WE HAD POOLED OUR LIFE SAVINGS OF JUST $200 EACH. WE HAD NO CHOICE, WE WERE LOOKING DOWN THE BARREL OF A GUN.”

What lies ahead for 2018? We have been working on some projects for nearly two years that will be released this year and, of course, we have the collections each season. We will continue keeping our production in New Zealand, which we have for the past 28 years, as that is very important for us, to support those that supported us and to put money back into the New Zealand economy. Without locals, World would not be here, we would not be having this conversation and it is our way of giving something back. We will also continue with the philanthropic side of the company which, again, we have done for 28 years, as that is extremely important to us as people and as a brand. To be recognised, not only for World, but also the brand’s philanthropy, has been extremely gratifying.

MATCHMAKERS

out & about

theatrical By Melinda Collins

If the busy lives of friends and loved ones has ever stopped you missing out on the latest theatrical performance, a show-stopping new social initiative may be just the ticket – puns absolutely intended – to ensure you never again miss a good performance.

T

he Court Theatre has referred to itself as a “theatrical friendship matchmaker” with a new initiative which ensures everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the theatre. The ‘Play Mates’ initiative encourages members to meet in the Court Theatre’s foyer for pizza and wine, enjoy a play together, before mixing and mingling postperformance. The gatherings are hosted by a member of The Court’s community, who will ensure everyone feels at ease and lead a discussion on the play members are about to watch. Artistic Director Ross Gumbley

says Play Mates is a unique take, but the theatre is excited about what it offers Christchurch. “Friendship matchmaking based on a mutual love of theatre – it’s not something we’ve exactly explored before, but it makes so much sense,” he says. “There are a lot of people out there who would love to attend the theatre but don’t have anyone to attend with and don’t feel comfortable going it alone. Play Mates allows us to bring those people together so they can all share the experience of great theatre.” For more information visit www.courttheatre.org.nz.

But this season’s design darlings have waved goodbye to the adolescent polka dots of the nineties. Instead, this modern take on dots successfully marries sophisticated style with a light-hearted edge. Loud and proud, the polka dot is the redlip of sartorial circles and, after a few years of minimalist trends and solemn ensembles, this fun fashion fixture is becoming the life and soul of the style party.

here are several factors that will affect how skin looks, some we can control, some we inherit and some we can reverse. We can control sun exposure, diet and smoking, which all have direct effects on our skin and, the good news is, it’s never too late to make positive changes. Luckily there are also treatments

available to help reverse any existing damage. Even someone as beautiful as Christie Brinkley – who looks great for 63 – has admitted to dabbling with non-invasive procedures such as Botox, fillers and Ulthera. So, what’s the best? What’s worth the money and time? Here’s what is available in order of cost

If there’s a fashion rule book – either figurative or literal – it’s not one Zambesi designer and co-founder Liz Findlay plays by.

It is perhaps this salient fact which has garnered such a cult following for the iconic homegrown label’s dark, edgy persona, one that is not for the fashionably faint of heart. We talk to Liz about the brand’s stylish evolution.

The fashion industry has been said to take no prisoners, how do you think you have been able to form such a strong iconic following? I believe we have carefully built trust and loyalty by staying true to our core values and our genuine desire to continue to create and encourage individual style. Our decision to

remain ‘Made in New Zealand’ has become even more important in the current landscape and seems to really resonate with our followers. We also operate as a small close-knit team keeping a critical eye on all aspects of the brand with a deep understanding of our ethos. I think that has been a strength. How would you describe your style evolution over the years? A very organic and natural progression. I’m still passionate and curious about clothes and still learning what I am capable of. What do you think the Zambesi name represents? Quality, integrity, imagination, realism, strength, independence. With such a long-standing iconic label, how do you remain current and continue to be such a strong performer? We work very hard! I am surrounded by a very talented creative team that believe in the brand. they and our loyal following validate the brand and share in the success. What are some of your future goals or ambitions for the company? We try not to think too far ahead; our goal is always to improve the way we do things and make great clothes – that is our purest ambition. How would you describe the overall New Zealand fashion scene? So much has changed but there’s a lot of creative energy and drive – there always has been and it seems as strong as ever.

How did you find your way into the fashion field? Looking back now it feels that it was inevitable. I loved being around fabric and clothing, a passion passed down from my mother who taught me to sew. She was very creative and one of my favourite memories is a pair of maroon pleated rompers she made me for school sports. They made such an impression I was asked to parade them in front of the whole class – my first entree into the modelling world! I have always had a leaning towards rompers and have included them in many collections over the years I moved to Auckland from Dunedin in the late 60s and applied for a position in administration at Derek Batts Limited. I was very fortunate to be able to transfer to the production department after some time and there started my education in the fashion industry. I learnt to use the industrial machines in my breaks and was fascinated by the process from design through to distribution. It was a very large company and a great environment to observe and learn. Over seven years I explored working in retail, moving on to a textile company that imported amazing fabrics, and finally in a small workroom in upper Queen street for Walter Hart. I loved working for him and being in a creative and inspirational environment made many valuable connections, which encouraged me to venture into retail and then later into creating Zambesi with my husband Neville.

entists Grahame and Christine of Duxton Dental say more people are keeping their natural teeth as they get older. However, with ageing, especially when teeth have had considerable restoration work, comes the increased risk of tooth decay, root decay and gum disease. This needn’t be the case with professional advice and treatment. “To give your teeth the best chance of lasting a lifetime, it is wise to review your dental plan when you reach 55,” Grahame says. “Factors such as reduced saliva, reduced dexterity and institutionalised living all contribute to dental deterioration.” An individual prevention plan is essential to protect the teeth’s

vulnerable surfaces – and ideally before the latter years approach. Duxton Dental has an acute awareness, new techniques and new materials designed specifically for the ageing dentition. The clinic’s comprehensive consultation takes into consideration health status and personal requirements for a healthy mouth and great smile, and any risk of disease can be identified and controlled. “Your oral health is closely related to your overall general health and good oral health is part of successful ageing.” For more information or to make an appointment phone Duxton Dental, 22 Barlett Street, Riccarton on 03-348 5488, email info@duxtondental.co.nz or visit www.duxtondental.co.nz.

K

ate Davidson is the Senior Nurse Co-ordinator at Genea Oxford Fertility. One of three nurses in the clinic’s multidisciplinary team, she has worked in her field for 15 years and was involved in helping set up Genea Oxford Fertility four years ago. She says the clinic’s nurses are there to support couples at every stage of their fertility journey, whether it’s helping them through a medical procedure or providing an understanding ear on the phone. “Hearing a baby has been born (and eventually getting to have a cuddle) is the best conclusion and always makes me feel privileged to be doing this job,” she says. “If a couple’s fertility treatment is unsuccessful, we also know we have helped them to do their very best to have children – which is important as they move on with their lives.” So how does Kate describe a typical day in her role as a fertility nurse at Genea Oxford? “The day starts with checking emails and new enquiries that have arrived overnight. Scanning for IVF cycles generally starts at 8.30 - 9.00am, followed by egg collections. A typical egg collection, where a women’s eggs are aspirated from the ovaries, takes up to 30 minutes. “Embryo transfers generally fill in the late morning. It takes 9-14 days before a pregnancy blood test can determine if a woman is pregnant from an embryo transfer. Waiting can be extremely stress-

ful. We contact people during this time to see how they are feeling and remind them of our counselling service. “Blood test results normally start arriving at around 1.30pm. These tests can show a number of things such as where people are in their cycle, the next steps needed in their fertility treatment, whether they are pregnant, that someone has a failing pregnancy or an ectopic pregnancy. The results are discussed with the specialist and patients are contacted. “There are always unplanned moments including someone arriving with their newborn baby for a cuddle. We particularly love it when patients come back with their babies. I know we’re biased but we think Genea Oxford makes beautiful babies! “There are many highlights to working as a fertility nurse at Genea Oxford, especially the great team environment. Variety is guaranteed! Also the world of fertility is constantly changing. Some days you may have to give a number of people negative news but all it takes is one positive pregnancy result or one photo of a newborn baby to turn your day around.” If you’re struggling to conceive or just want to find out more about fertility treatment options, contact Genea Oxford Fertility on 0800 377 894. kids zone There are three key features effective educational intervention for your child should be: simple, structured and successful.

A

s the 2018 academic year begins, do you – as a parent – groan and roll your eyes at the thought of positive changes in your child’s learning difficulties based on past experience? Do you hope and wish that someone could re-write the script for, not a new beginning, but a new ending? Reflection on past intervention is a great tool to establish whether the positive and attainable outcomes promised were achieved. At braiNZiac, the team aims to deliver the three ‘S’ properties of intervention and encourages parents to ask, ‘is my child’s current intervention doing the same?’ Intervention must be simple, so you understand what your child is receiving. According to research, intervention needs to be structured, otherwise you can

go around in circles for months – even years – and, most importantly, it has to be successful. Are you seeing the proof and evidence of improved learning, better grades and educational milestones achieved? New and improved learning skills and abilities must transfer into your child’s daily educational life 100 percent of the time, otherwise it’s not effective. It’s that simple. If you want another year of frustration, then change nothing. If, however, you want a better ending of successful learning for your child, then give braiNZiac a call. The team can give you a demonstration of intervention programmes that deliver results, faster, easier and in as little as three months. Phone Alan on 022 533 1355 for more information.

MIND/ BODY mastery It has its roots in more than 5000 years of ancient Indian texts and traditions and yet yoga, an eastern spiritual development practice, continues to gain popularity in the west.

W

hile the fads come and go, yoga continues to be practised by millions across the world. Yoga began to pique interest in the west towards the end of the 19th century, A radical break from the grassroots yoga lineages of India, the modernised offering was deeply influenced by western spiritual ideas but at its heart was the same original purpose – connecting with the divine and exploring inner awareness. A Sanskrit word derived from the word ‘yuj’ which means to connect, join or balance, yoga offers a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Yuj, according to the Iyengar School of Yoga, is to join or integrate all aspects of an individual and create a balanced harmony of the body, mind and soul, with the ultimate goal of achieving kaivalya or absolute freedom. The mind-body practice is frequently touted for its ability to reduce stress and boost wellbeing, but it has also been shown to offer wide-ranging physical health benefits, including decreasing cholesterol and blood pressure, reducing anxiety and stress, as well as improving lung capacity and bone density among older adults. While some crave yoga’s ability to achieve a sense of wellbeing in a chaotic world, for some the ancient practice fulfils a far simpler need. “I don’t want it to change my life,” actress Julia Roberts said recently. “Just my butt.”

Magic in Movement

At the Flow Hot Yoga studio there are many varieties of yoga on offer: Hot Flow, Power Vinyasa, Yin, Yin/Yang and Breathing/ Meditation classes.

T

he popular studio is soon introducing a ‘Mastery Vinyasa’ class for students who have done Power Vinyasa for at least three years. One of the key benefits of yoga is being present and creating a mind/body connection. If practised without a mind/body

connection, injury can occur. The goal of the team at Flow Hot Yoga is to help students attain maximum use of their bodies for as long as possible; to move easily, elegantly and efficiently all their lives and not to burn out from overdoing things, or doing them incorrectly. Injuries happen in a year, not in a day, through regular incorrect postures or continually pushing too hard. Proper form and listening to your body are vital. More is not more when it comes to yoga – there is patience and beauty in the mastery of a slow but steady progression of knowledge and skill in this ancient practise. At Flow Hot Yoga the emphasis is on learning postures correctly and safely so it can be done for a lifetime. With the range on offer at Flow Hot Yoga, from challenging sessions to the peaceful, relaxing ones, there is something for every day of the week, for a lifetime.

cuisine What do you attribute the rise of “raw” to? People being more aware of what is actually in food on the supermarket shelves, with the majority of ingredients not actually being food. These ‘ingredients’ are beginning to cause diseases and illnesses which the public are becoming aware of. Due to this, people are becoming more conscious and aware of what they are consuming. You attended a plant lab school in California. What was that experience like? We absolutely loved Plant Lab and the experiences and memories we gained from it. A highlight was learning a wide variety of raw food techniques that showcased different flavours and textures each fruit and vegetable has to offer. A plant based diet is far from boring.

Two Raw Sisters: Rosa and Margo Flanagan

Raw revolution a

The rise of raw food delights has been significant. Chefs, bakers and nutritionists from the four corners of the world regularly pay ‘raw’ lip service, thanks to its multitudinous benefits and it has become the food fixation of culinary whizkids Rosa and Margo Flanagan, who have dubbed themselves ‘two raw sisters’. Hot off the heels of their return from a vegan culinary school in America, Metropol talks to the duo about their ‘rawtarian’ approach to cuisine.

36 February 01, 2018 Metropol

What is your current venture? We are currently in Sydney instructing a Plant Lab culinary pop-up for four weeks. While we are at home in Christchurch, we are running our own plant-based business, Two Raw Sisters. We specialise in raw plant-based workshops, catering, sports nutrition talks, and we supply our raw cheesecakes to Hello Sunday Café. What lies ahead? We have lots of exciting ventures ahead of us, starting with the Riccarton Bush Farmers’ Market where we will have a stall from February 2018. We are also in the process of rebranding and creating a new website, which is a really exciting step for us, as it means we will have a central hub where people can go and see what Two Raw Sisters is all about! Throughout the year we will be developing more comprehensive workshops, such as fermentation and plantbased sports nutrition. We also hope to release some e-books later in the year. There’s lots going on, watch this space!

Almost everyone is familiar with the staples of Indian food – butter chicken, tikka masala and even rogan josh. While versions of these are available at Tamarind, “that is not everyday food for us,” Honey admits. “The food we provide here is the food we have in our homes,” she says. “It is a different taste to what people are accustomed to in Indian food.” For example, on the menu at Tamarind is Ishtoo, a choice of

meat stewed with mild spices and Kerala’s signature coconut milk. Succulent roasted fish of the day, steamed in banana leaves, - meen pollichathu - is also a favourite. New to the menu are the truly authentic thali meals - a large silver platter made up of sweet, sour, salt, bitter, astringent and spicy tastes. “To have a complete meal, you should have all of these flavours to satisfy the palate,” Honey says. Thali meals are available in vegetarian and meat-added options, and are very popular. In the heart of Riccarton, with parking off Rotherham Street, Tamarind is open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. It is licenced and BYO wine. As culinary connoisseurs increasingly adopt a ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ attitude, foodies are becoming the beneficiaries of truly innovative recipes inspired by Carlo Petrini and his Slow Food Movement, which concentrates on the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment.

RAW FOOD The dietary practice of eating only, or mostly, uncooked, unprocessed foods, raw food is moving from marginalised to mainstream and with merit. Advocating the consumption of dietary gems like nuts, veggies, seeds and dairy, the movement has certainly courted some degree of controversy, but it looks like it’s here to stay.

3. 4.

PADDOCK TO PLATE The paddock to plate food philosophy was popularised by the powers that be quite some time ago, but it’s still on the menu in 2018. Promoting the virtues of vertical integration and striving to achieve greater sustainability and quality in the realm of cuisine, paddock to plate is something you can introduce into your own home – think a vege garden, or your own chickens and livestock.

KOMBUCHA CRAVINGS Dubbed the “Immortal Health Elixir” by the Chinese and originating in the East around 2000 years ago, Kombucha is the new kid on the culinary block in the Western world. A traditional fermented drink made of black tea and sugar, it is praised for its health promoting properties – giving energy, quelling pain and detoxing your body.

torte PREP TIME: 20 mins

COOK TIME: 5 hours

TOTAL TIME: 5 hours 20 mins

Beautiful to look at, insanely delicious and good for you, this Pomegranate and Hazelnut Torte from Little Bird Goodness is the perfect partner for a Valentine’s Day dinner! Author: Eat for: Cuisine: Serves:

Megan May Dessert, snack Raw, vegan, gluten-free, diary-free, sugar-free 14-16

½ cup candied hazelnuts or plain dried activated hazelnuts, roughly chopped ⅓ cup chopped raw chocolate bars Seeds of ½ pomegranate

instructions: TO MAKE THE BASE: 1. 2.

3. 4.

5.

Blend nuts in food processor until almost a couscous-like texture. Add dates and blend until well combined and the mixture is slightly sticky. Add remaining base ingredients and pulse a few times until combined. The mixture should hold together well, if not, add 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup to help it stick together. Line a 22cm fluted tart tin with plastic wrap, allowing it to hang over the edge, Press base mixture firmly into the tart tin, about 5mm thick, covering the bottom and then the sides of the tin. Set aside.

TO MAKE THE FILLING: 6. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender. With the help of a tamper or spatular, blend all ingredients together until a creamy, silky mousse consistency. I tend to blend, stop, scrap, blend, stop, scrap over and over for the best result! 7. Pour mousse over the base, cover with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least 5 hours. 8. Garnish with hazelnuts, chopped raw chocolate and pomegranate seeds (or berries!). 9. This will keep in the fridge for up to one week. Metropol February 01, 2018 41

A FILIPINO

TWIST

With Filipino cuisine on the rise in popularity worldwide, it was only a matter of time until authentic and traditional Filipino baked goods came to Christchurch.

T

ucked into the heart of Peerswick Mall – a part of Church Corner with a long history, and now, favoured by many as an Asian shopping hub – is Panadero Filipino Bakery. Panadero is one of very few Filipino bakeries in New Zealand. Owned and operated by a team of Filipinos, good friends, all with a wealth of experience in the life and cuisine of the Philippines. It is well-placed to supply delicious treats, whether authentic or western favourites with a Filipino twist. There are crème brûlée doughnuts, pastries and cakes, or more traditional items such as pandesal, ideal with coffee for breakfast. Filipino cuisine can arguably claim the invention of ‘fusion’. With Chinese, Spanish, and later American influences, the area’s culinary history is long and varied. A staple, however, has been ube (oo-BAE), a.k.a purple yam. It’s a sweetish root vegetable, notable for its vivid violet colour. It’s common in Asian countries, but found particular favour in the Philippines. And at Panadero. Panadero’s ube doughnut is a favourite. Ube has a nutty flavour, and is used in cakes, ice cream, jams, cookies, and very soon will be available as a café latte. And it’s purple! The bakers at Panadero offer a range of baked treats inspired by their childhood memories. Try other food such as chicken empanada, coconut doughnuts, coffees and more. Buy seven doughnuts, get an eighth free! See the Facebook page for opening hours and more information.

LIGHT OF YOUR LIFE It’s not that easy to find the light of your life – contrary to popular opinion, you may not be destined star-crossed lovers.

Buster + Punch available from Trenzseater

O

h, and we’re not talking about your Romeo or Juliet, people, it’s about the literal light of your life in this case. Never fear though, we consider ourselves pretty good matchmakers at Metropol! A fundamental part of our everyday living, the benefits of modern lighting have evolved well beyond their core functionality and they’re now about

looks and personality too. In 2018, solid materials used to create an industrial aesthetic remain front and centre, with the spotlight firmly on pendants. Long gone are the dainty chandeliers or bare bulbs, and in their place are the personality plus accents offering more than just some light relief. Think beautiful brass tones and modern shapes – lighting that still has an

emphasis on the ‘warehouse’ style, but that is more refined than its predecessors. Raw metals are still reigning supreme and, thanks to the Internet of Things, intelligent lighting solutions are around every corner; intelligent lighting controls that are revolutionising the way we see our environments – quite literally. COVERING

YOUR BASES

Everything’s covered at New Style Blinds and Curtains – personal service, sharp pricing and all the latest options.

“N

ine times out of ten we offer competitive pricing for better quality,” says hands-on owner Paul O’Loughlin. The Waltham business attracts repeat clientele and their referrals.

“We only make to measure for good reason. A couple of millimetres makes the difference in getting it right or horribly wrong. A perfect fit is tidy, flush and functional.”

“Upstairs, our fabric showroom area offers thousands of samples and our large table is an ideal space where clients can work alongside our consultants with house plans, co-ordinating floor and wallpaper samples with fabric over a cup of coffee. “Offering free in-home quotations, our consultants come with a wealth of knowledge and experience.” Shirley has an eye for colour, paired with years of fabric experience. Jemma’s expertise is interior design with a focus on functional fashion based designs. She has an in-depth knowledge spanning all products. Paul’s focus is blinds and shutters, which he describes as a modern twist on a classic, suitable for all home styles – practical and beautiful. Roller sunscreens come in different weights, depending on how much light needs to be blocked. Light filters are transparent, letting in light but provide full privacy. Combine these products to create double rollers or pair either of them with blockout blinds. “Motorisation of these products is simple and may be more cost effective than you thought. You never have to pull a blind again.” “We combine all the new technology and ideas with old the school manufacturing quality from our workshop.” New Style Blinds and Curtains opens Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, and Saturdays by appointment at 14 Opawa Road, Waltham. hen Ken Clement saw his friend’s established business, Rooms by Raymond, take off in Waikato, he acquired the exclusive plans and started his own business in Christchurch – with wife Tracy as Marketing Manager. That was nearly two years ago. Since then he has built portable outside rooms for artists, potters, home businesses, band practice studios, libraries, man caves, garden retreats, spare bedrooms, craft rooms

and sleep-outs for children that never leave home. With 22 years in the building industry, Ken takes pride in producing a quality product. Made to order, the ‘Rooms’ are double glazed, lined with hardwood ply and are insulated on the top, bottom and sides, with a ranch slider opening to a generous deck and veranda. Up to three windows can be positioned to maximise light and views. Stylish, durable, weathertight and maintenancefree, they are treated timber framed, with

a Colorsteel corrugated iron exterior in your choice of colour. “We’ll stand by our work,” Ken says. “All ‘Rooms’ are wired with a caravan adaptor and come with an electrical COC. At 10sqm our 4.15m Room is $12,995 with the smaller 3.6m option available for $11,995. Both sizes are 2.4m wide, so they are transportable anywhere in the South Island. However, if the space or access is tricky, we can build on site.” Phone Ken on 021 284 1275 or visit www.theoutsideroom.co.nz.

R

auora Park presents an exciting opportunity to the people of Christchurch – a chance to have a green space grow, develop and respond to us; for it to be something personalised for the people of our city, rather than the other way around. Running through the heart of the Eastern Frame residential development, the 660m lineal reserve connects the South Frame to the Margaret Mahy Playground, a substantial public space I was lucky enough to have a guided tour through prior to its opening in December last year. Taken through by Ōtākaro Principal Landscape Architect Pete Matthews,

the park a place for ‘everyone’, which is reflected in the palette of materials that have been utilised to facilitate a number of uses. A multi-valent space, it has been designed, and constructed, to be enjoyed by all: dog walkers, young families, the fitness focused, elderly and everyone in between, while shared pathways and a vehicle lane down the western side allow people to move through the space with ease. As a community, it is our responsibility to use the space and take ownership of this exciting new addition. Currently there is no specific reason to walk the length of it, except to satisfy curiosity, engaging with it will allow it to grow and develop how we as a city want it to. While it may require some imagination, the success of the space will come through the establishment of activities and residential development around the edges, to ensure it is used to its full potential. To this end it is great to see some residential construction work that is now underway. With ‘Rau’ meaning leaves, greenery, many and gathering; and ‘Ora’ indicating health and wellbeing, Rauora Park is an adeptly named new addition to our garden city. Now get out there and enjoy it! the green space has been purposely designed to achieve a balance against the surrounding built environment, while restraining the central business district. Outlined in the original regeneration blueprint of Christchurch, it is wonderful to see such a large-scale anchor project take shape, and so successfully. Where investment in open space is often reserved for the development and maintenance of roads and footpaths, Rauora Park is a showcase of value, not only in terms of the importance placed on green space, but in the value such a space will bring to the city and its people. Delivered by Ōtākaro on behalf of the Crown, Rauora Park is the third largest public space in the city and is a project that should see us celebrate and congratulate both local and central government for their foresight. Building on the Te Papa Ōtākaro development, this new public space creates a level of engagement with the Avon River that we haven’t previously had; a ring of green space that allows users to meander around the city, connecting and experiencing with this central neighbourhood in new and exciting ways. Christchurch City Council Social and Community Development Chair, Phil Clearwater has been quoted as calling

he NZ building code is universally used as a target but Bob Burnett says it is approximately 20 years behind other OECD countries. His mission is now accelerated through The Superhome Movement. Bob has won the Sustainability Superstar Award at the 2017 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards held in Auckland late last year. The award celebrates a person who inspires and leads others to make a difference, who has gone above and beyond to bring about change, within their organisation or in the wider community. The judges said “Bob has shown tireless commitment for twenty years to create better places for the people of New Zealand.

W

ith a background in architectural design, Craig Haywood ran a successful architectural engineering business with a team of 20. But over time his view on building homes in New Zealand changed. “In New Zealand, some new homes are still performing poorly: leaking air and wasting energy,” Craig says. “The New Zealand Building Code has no standard for air-tightness like other countries do. By comparison I believe with these European plans we, as a company, are investing in the housing stock of the future, as well as diversifying the appearance of our homes.” When driving through a new subdivision recently, his fourteen-year-old daughter pointed out that all the houses looked the same. “Which is interesting because we all drive different cars, dress differently and have different hairstyles yet every night we all go home to similar looking houses,” he says. “If a teenager can identify this, why do we continue to build houses the same as everyone else in the street?” There is an international flavour to the appearance of the Z500 designs. There are plenty of the popular flat roofed plans, but also a selection of more traditional pitched roof options as well. All plans can be altered as required for each individual client. They are priced competitively while providing the benefit of energy efficiency. “I think these beautiful European-designed homes will change the way New Zealand real estate looks.”

GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES: Large format pavers are starting to make way for their smaller, textured rivals.

FIRED UP: Fire pits are being sought out by homeowners who still want to maintain indoor outdoor flow during the cooler months.

OUTDOOR EXPECTATIONS: Outdoor rooms are expected to further increase in popularity as these spaces move away from luxury to expectation.

POPULAR PLANTINGS: Interesting succulents and cactus plants are popular and add visual interest to increasingly simple, low maintenance spaces.

LESS IS MORE: While small gardens are by no means new, strides are being made in how they are designed.

UNUSUAL EDIBLES: A move back to homegrown is seeing the resurgence of the likes of rhubarb and cucamelons. Reflect this trend and try a few new-to-you crops.

T

o showcase their clients’ vaulted ceiling in their existing Harewood home, Jo and Edward raised the height of the cabinetry. The layout, with its central island, allows free access all around the kitchen and flow to the outdoors. The clients sought “detail, but not too much detail”, and the result is clean Shaker-style cabinet doors and cornice trims. Based on their clients’ chosen floor tile in textured neutral grey and an existing wall colour, the kitchen cabinetry is show-stoppingly gorgeous in Resene Black-White and Resene Black. The glamour stakes are further raised by topping the black island with a Caesarstone benchtop in Snow and the white cabinetry with an Absolute Black Granite benchtop. Genius! The clients’ brief included a family breakfast bar, and a drinks preparation and storage area. The drinks cabinet, with a mirrored back and lighting, is accessed through ‘pocket doors’ which cleverly fold away. Pocket doors are employed again in the pantry to the left of the fridge. Upper cabinets are glass fronted and lit for display. Advanced Joinery also renovated the laundry using white subway tiles and natural wood basket drawers, to create a clean, fresh and eminently usable space. Both the clients and the Advanced Joinery team are thrilled with the end results. Metropol talks to Jo and Edward about clever design, kitchen trends and the wow factor.

DESIGNING ‘ADVANCED’ KITCHENS

With a dark timber floor and a curved layout that was difficult to move about in, a couple needed to renovate the kitchen of their late 20th century red brick house in Harewood. After meeting Advanced Joinery designers Jo Morrison and Edward Bowden, they never looked back.

03 348 77 00

Jo and Edward, with so much choice in product and style, how do you know what to design for each client? Complementing the house is key and you factor in the desires of the client. They usually leave it to us to get the best layout, functionality and storage for their budget. Fine tuning comes next, according to the client’s needs and tastes. We are honest with the client if we believe the client’s ideas won’t work. For example, there has been a fashion for 5-10 years for glossy finishes and that simply doesn’t work in some houses. What are your goals when you begin a kitchen design for a client? The aim is to exceed client expectations. While the drawings are accurate and detailed, you always want the client to experience the ‘wow’ factor when they see the kitchen installed. What are the trends and changes in kitchens as we head towards the third decade of the 21st century? From open centrally located kitchens, they are a little more tucked away, perhaps around a corner. There is more depth, mood, and earthiness to colour with tans, browns, and blacks used, plus natural materials such as wood and concrete. We are often opening up separate pantries a little; wall tiles are undulated or patterned and lighting is playing a bigger role all the time, in ceilings, bulkheads, under bench and inside cabinetry.

Acome-back corkin’ By Melinda Collins

For thousands of years it has been simply a means to prevent the spillage of our favourite tipples and remind us to pick up the milk, but cork is set to take the interiors market by storm this year.

n attention seeker in all the right ways, cork makes for a feature wall that is as practical as it is cool. Dead space on your office walls quickly transforms into a top spot for inspirational quotes, treasures, calendars and notes. Not only is cork a stylish material idea that adds warmth and texture to spaces, but it’s a corker for absorbing noise in our increasingly large, open plan homes. And, although the home office is ripe for a cork wall installation, there are other spaces in your home that you can rock the cork look, too. But if using cork en masse makes your heart do a nervous little pitter patter, why not try some cork patterned wallpapers, or some cork tiling. It’s increasingly making an appearance in homewares – think benches, tables and even cups and bowls. When it comes to interior trends, this is one we can get on board with.

FORMANCE

Naturally, when Jaguar New Zealand invites you to spend a day doing driving challenges in its new model range, and you don’t have to fork out for petrol or tyres, there’s really only one response.

J

aguar’s Art of Performance Tour, hosted at Wigram Airfield by Archibalds Motors in December was part of a travelling road show designed to give customers and media the chance to experience Jaguar and Land Rover at their very best. On display was a stunning 1957 Jaguar XKSS supercar. One of only 24 ever produced, the XKSS was the road-going version of Jaguar’s legendary D-Type Le Mans racer. The display model was on loan from Auckland owner Michael Giltrap and one of six cars reproduced by Jaguar

themselves last year, to replace those lost in a fire during the time of original production. After a safety briefing, it was time to burn some rubber. First up was Jaguar’s Smart Cone System, designed to teach drivers to be fast and smooth by navigating a course of cones, with points awarded for speed and accuracy. Having an official Jaguar spotter on hand didn’t stop this writer from making a complete hash of his first run. However, the second was much improved, with yours truly acquiring

enough points to finish in the top five. The second challenge was all about speed, reactions and braking, with competitors negotiating a slalom section and emergency brake test at speed, before blasting down the runway back to the start line. Starting in the F-PACE SUV, we soon got the hang of utilising the ABS and slamming on the anchors at more than 130km/h to perform an emergency stop. Next up was the XE saloon, which was more planted in the slalom section. Finally, the awesome F-Type Sport 400 coupe gave the sort of acceleration and braking prowess which could leave one’s fillings rather scrambled. The slalom was dealt with cleanly and safely, and the foot to the floor blast back was rather nice. Lovely burble from the 3.0L V6 heart too. Lastly, the Land Rover Terrapod gave us a chance to experience the uncanny four-wheel drive system of the new Discovery. The Art of Performance Tour ran for four days, with the overall winner heading up north to Hampton Downs to represent Christchurch at the National Art of Performance Tour finals. Oh by the way, it wasn’t me; maybe next year.

POWER TO BOOT By Nicholas Henare

I got the call from BMW that a very special car was available to test drive after the Evolocity Electric wheels festival. Can’t say I wasn’t excited when I found out it was the incredible BMW i8 Coupe. A hybrid electric/petrol beast of a machine, she’s sexy on the outside with power to boot on the inside.

The down side was room for luggage, but I guess you’re not popping down to Pak ‘n’ Save to do the weekly shop in this little beauty. Coming in at $278,000, this is the car enthusiast’s weekend drive. In standard driving mode, the new BMW i8 Coupe can be driven exclusively on the electric motor alone. The combustion engine is only brought into play at higher speeds, or when the driver stamps down hard on the accelerator, and is switched off again far more frequently when a measured driving style is maintained. Pressing the eDrive button allows both models to travel at up to 120 km/h on electric power alone. The internal combustion engine has also undergone further optimisation to ready it for the new BMW i8 Coupe. The three- cylinder unit extracts maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp from its displacement of just 1.5 litres, along with peak torque of 320 Nm. These figures may sound low for those thinking MONSTER power, but as all those who came for a ride in the vehicle on my test drive will confirm, it’s very high on the thrill factor, both on acceleration and sound. As my final drive for 2017 I can say it was a fantastic Christmas present from the team at Christchurch BMW and a recommendation for anyone wanting to try a truly luxurious sports car.

vehicle architecture, with aluminum chassis and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. The further optimised BMW eDrive technology employed in both models comprises a high-voltage battery with significantly expanded cell capacity and energy content, and an electric motor generating a higher peak output. The result is an incredible combination of petrol and self-generating electric power – the best of both worlds. I had a lot of naysayers commenting that “it must sound amazing” (insert sarcasm here), but the sound of the engine actually was bloody great. You feel in control with an incredibly responsive steering and acceleration platform, sensitive to my every whim on a corner. My biggest problem was trying not to exceed the speed limit. So attractive is it that other drivers would pull up videoing you or taking pictures on their phones and this car matched its look with performance. The proportions, lines and surface design that mark the BMW i8 Coupe belong to a new breed of sports car. It stands out as an extremely sporty 2+2-seater. Its light carbon fiber, scissor doors created an amusing scenario for those that have a short skirt and the older gentlemen – like myself – who are used to a foot-first scenario. But it’s well worth it for the sheer uniqueness.

an agile

motoring

By Nicholas Henare

Work on the West Coast came up recently, so I took the opportunity to put the new Volkswagen Golf GTI through its paces. Loaded to the roof with everything I needed – and my cameraman’s gear as well – we hit the road.

I

t’s a four-cylinder, 350 Nm on torque, six-speed, 0-100 in 6.4, $56990, 169 kW, agile little beast. If you’re overtaking with a fully loaded car, there’s no downtime, with instant power at your fingertips. With 220 horsepower under the hood, you can compete with the big boys, but maintain a quiet demeanour about you. A touch screen dash with the classic

easy interaction of a Volkswagen means you’re not distracted while playing your music or taking your calls through the stunning sound system. Automatic turn off/turn on systems for both wipers (it rains A LOT on the coast) and ignition impressed. Even the interior trim is elegant and stylish, with red stitching on the leather interior. What surprised me was the

petrol consumption, which had a good 6.6 litres per 100Km. If you’ve picked up that I write a bit about the Volkswagen, that’s because they really are a pleasure to drive. The only downside is there’s not one parked permanently in my driveway. It was meant to go back on Friday. As I write, it’s Monday and I still have it!

X

MARKS THE SPOT T By Nicholas Henare

I got the call from Tesla in Australia asking me if I wanted to take the new Tesla X out for a spin while they were visiting Christchurch. I gave them a cool, ‘yes’ then hung up and did a little dance. I’ve been writing about Elon Musk and his Tesla venture for years. His Lithium battery technology is groundbreaking. I’d never been able to see what it’s REALLY like.

he Model X is touted as the safest, quickest and most capable sports utility vehicle in history, with all-wheel drive and a 100-kWh battery providing 565 kilometres of range. It’s ludicrously fast, accelerating from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in as quick as 3.1 seconds. Two-tonne of vehicle with the sexy ‘Falcon’ wings all add up to this automotive writer’s ‘A-list’ drive. The Tesla representatives had a slick presentation with information on the sensors, doors and other vehicle specifics. There are chargers in a

great range of accessible locations in Christchurch – including The George Hotel, Whitehouse Black and the Rydges, Latimer. The 17-inch touchscreen display, bonnet to skylight windscreen, luxurious interior and top of the line features, really do make this the car of the future. I call it the iPhone of cars because it’s a game changer and for good reason. The drive was spectacular and the acceleration was a revelation. Performance was everything I thought it would be. All of this doesn’t come cheap, but oh the allure of owning one!
