ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a Kate fashionable nod to what Pierson we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. Kaikoura For the love of

In a poignant case of paying it forward, teams of Christchurch East residents humbled by the support they received post-February 2011 sprang into action to meet the needs of hundreds of affected people throughout the greater Canterbury district following the Kaikoura quake.

nna-Maria Covich and her flatmate Carolyn Hodgen used social media networks to assist with sourcing food supplies, before hooking up with the Eastside: Our Turn To Help Facebook group, which was operating from Bin Inn New Brighton’s back room and adjacent arcade. Anna-Maria had worked in the welfare team for the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) post-February 2011 and was aware that a lot of needs didn’t filter through to official channels. There was also a major disconnect between what she saw first-hand in the East and what she heard through those official channels. Some was deliberate, in that the EOC had to prioritise its early response, but some was caused by making the system too hard to use. Anna-Maria began wondering how to make it easier for those offering and requesting assistance. Her website superhero.geek.nz

Assistance has included collecting and facilitating the delivery of baking, non-perishable foods and cleaning products; coordinating accommodation requirements for the displaced; finding a massage therapist for a nurse coming to Christchurch for respite, and supporting a family evacuated from Kaikoura when they lost their house before being uprooted again from their temporary lodging in Goose Bay. Anna-Maria is unsure how long the service will be required, but plans to continue for as long as she is able to offer help and others require it. “By the time I needed a break post-2011, most of the offers for free accommodation had dried up and I didn’t qualify for a travel grant. I don’t want anyone affected by this quake in North Canterbury, Kaikoura, or Wellington to be in that same position.”

HUMILITY PERSONIFIED Chart-topping, platinum Kiwi singer-songwriter Benny Tipene is humility personified. A vocal patriot of his childhood stomping ground - Palmerston North - the soundtrack to Benny’s own success story is defined by family and great friendships as well his own unwavering commitment to fulfilling his musical potential.

Ahead of his opening act at The Winery Tour, alongside the equally prodigious talent of Brooke Fraser and Bic Runga, Benny talks to Metropol about the journey. Were you always compelled in the creative direction of music? My first introduction to music was at primary school in the Kapahaka group. I think I learned there how to hold a tune and, looking back, I think that was a beautiful introduction. When I was 16 I rented a “How To Play Piano” book from a mobile library and taught myself how to play. I learnt ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles for my Grandmother and played it for her just before she passed away. From there stemmed my love for The Beatles, and so I kept on learning their songs. In my last year of High School my friend and I wanted to form a band, but he said that carrying a piano around is too much effort and suggested I learn guitar. I spent a whole summer locked in my room learning to play. We wrote two songs, entered ourselves in Rockquest as ‘The Nerines’, and won future recording artist. For the next threes years we played gigs, wrote and recorded songs and immersed ourselves in the musical community of The Stomach. A couple

of the guys went down to Wellington to study so I bought myself an acoustic guitar and started practising covers and singing more. I took that to cafes and pubs and started making a living off music in Palmerston North. I started writing my own songs and releasing them on Bandcamp under the series ‘Room Demo Live’. I put on shows in peoples flats so I could play and invited other acoustic artists to as well. One day X-Factor came to Palmy and I thought I’d give that a shot, and now here I am. Has the impressive trajectory of your career caught you by surprise at all or did you have set goals in mind on the journey? Since being apart of The Nerines I’d always hoped that I would have a career in music. When the band wasn’t playing as much and I started playing solo I began to set goals of releasing music and playing more. X-Factor became a great platform to help me do this.

When I was 16 I learnt ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles for my Grandmother and played it for her just before she passed away.

What would you say have been some of the most significant challenges while establishing yourself as an artist? While I can appreciate the place X-Factor has put me in, and the opportunity it has given me to become a recording artist, it has been a challenge to prove myself as a musician and to separate myself from a reality TV show. I think it’s good to acknowledge what the show did for me but I knew going into it that I wouldn’t be able to ride that forever. I couldn’t actually write one song while I was on the show I found it too difficult in the bubble I was living in. When it was all over, I finally went home and wrote for a few months before releasing my EP. You describe playing the guitar and joining a band as being the first time you ‘felt like myself’ – how would you encourage others to find that sense of belonging in an art or hobby or at least a place of being that resonates? Be open to opportunities and be willing to try new things. Spending time on a craft can help you learn a lot about yourself and can become a great way of expressing yourself. For me, the band felt like a family and this really cemented me in my art. Creative communities are important so I encourage people to collaborate with others and have fun. Who have been your greatest sources of inspiration as well as practical support in your career evolution? Definitely my family! My parents have always encouraged my sister and I to pursue anything that makes us happy, so growing up in that environment gave us a lot of opportunities to try new things. The Stomach was a great place of support and inspiration. I watched so many bands there that made me want to be a better musician, and met so many of my friends there - it became a second family. I get a

lot of support and encouragement from my girlfriend. I’ve learnt so much from her, her art practise, and watching her creative process inspires me. All of my flatmates are into different things too - architecture, art, baking bread, working with fabrics. Talking with them and understanding their crafts has helped me appreciate different art forms and they inspire me to keep creating and sharing my own. Seeing them create excites me and motivates me to be as determined as they are. At times I become quite isolated, whether it’s in my head, or in a room playing guitar, and if I didn’t have them to talk to I’d go crazy. Without giving away any trade secrets, what methods do you employ as you make music? Most of my writing is done with a guitar and usually starts with a melody in my head. I definitely do most of my writing at night-time, my brain seems to be more loopy and a little bit more relaxed and that’s when it seems to happen the easiest. I tried doing the 9-5 songwriting thing but found I got nothing done. Playing different instruments can often help me find new melodies or inspire me. I’m not very good at piano but most of the songs on this next album have been crafted on piano. A lot of mistakes happen because my fingers are a little clumsy but some of the mistakes can take the song to a different place. What is your favourite life mantra? You’re a long time dead, so be happy now.

Shapeshifter is returning home to Christchurch to headline the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ever-popular Electric Avenue Music Festival later this month.

ormed 18 years ago, Shapeshifter is bringing their massive live show to Hagley Park North for the music festival on Saturday 25 February from 11am. Joining Shapeshifter is long standing Kiwi rock band Shihad, the name behind five number-one studio albums, the title for most number one records for any New Zealand artist and three top-ten singles in New Zealand. The two acts will be joined by award-winning Auckland hip hop artist David Dallas, Australian electronic hip hop artists Hermitude, and loop station genius Dub Fx is back with support from local legend Tiki Taane, amongst an incredible line-up of 30 international, national and local acts which will perform for 12 hours across three stages. Billed as the biggest music event of the summer, Hagley Park will be transformed by a massive light show, giant video walls, themed bars, carnival rides, performers and heaps more. So, get out there and enjoy yourself. After all, the only thing better than relaxing at a concert is relaxing at an outdoor concert the whole family can enjoy. In a case of art imitating life, inquisitive and boundary-pushing creator and curator Hannah Watkinson has turned the lens on herself.

chronological expose of her life, Watkinson’s latest exhibition The Near Future has her own evolution under the microscope. The existential examination is by no means a way to address ‘unfinished business’, but rather a retrospective consideration of what has come to pass.

The artist explains, “These photographs are evidence of a tangled tryst. My only familial ties with the West Coast of the South Island are to photographs. In some of these photographs my father stands as a fresh-faced teacher at Runanga and Kumara Schools. In others I’m depicted in holiday snaps as an 18 month old, then later as a sulky teenager, bored about being dragged on yet another cemetery visit with my parents.” Underpinned by a socio-cultural understanding of ‘place’, the photographs are discursive, used to describe the psychological landscape of Watkinson’s native region. She argues there are “invisible structures of economics and politics that define the place’s history. “When Solid Energy went into debt crisis talks in February of 2013, former Prime Minister John Key said that it was ‘very unlikely Solid Energy would be sold in the near future’. Now, in 2016, I have learnt that the ‘near future’ is a concept that occupies the minds of all who live on the West Coast. “I’m compelled to listen to people’s stories, to photograph, and then I return home with a heavy heart, the weight of narratives between my shoulder blades. This project has raised more questions than I will ever have the answers for, but I hope that the photographs I continue to make could inspire in people a sense of awareness in their surroundings.”

Two artists well worth keeping an eye on are Reuben Paterson and Simon Morris. It would be in every art lover’s interest to check out Te Puna o Waiwhetu Christchurch Art Gallery’s ongoing exhibitions and see for themselves the prodigious talent of these two artists.

Lara Strongman, Senior Curator at Christchurch Art Gallery explains this work further. “For the nine seconds it takes to ride between floors, the sensation is one of travelling through a night sky, studded with stars.” Paterson’s mentor was Darcy Nicholas who told him early in his career not to think of it as glitter but as reflected light. “There are strong concepts of Māoritanga inherent in Paterson’s work,” says Lara, “The sense of where you stand in the world, where you have come from, and where you are going.” Paterson’s comment in 2003 that he had become “well versed in looking up for explanation” seems an apt statement of what inspires and influences this artist. Simon Morris is an abstract artist based in Wellington. Yellow Ochre Room is a massive work painted directly onto the walls of the gallery. It took four weeks to complete. It covers fifty-two metres of wall space and is based on a series of mathematical calculations for diluting paint over nineteen squares. The first square is richly dense in colour, while the final square could be likened to the shade of parchment. “The Yellow Ochre Room is an immersive environment,” says Lara, “It’s a contemplative space in the heart of the gallery in which visitors can take time out to quietly process all that they have seen.” Lara says she was fortunate to see the artist at work. “It was a most interesting experience.” Visit www.christchurchartgallery.org.nz

The teams are treated to a wonderful day of golf, fine wine, food and a magnificent prize pool, all the while helping contribute to the success of the New Zealand Brain Research Institute. The FBI’s next event, on Saturday 1st April, is the second annual “OPERA meets ART” at the Christchurch Art Gallery. This event showcases the talent of The Opera Club and guest performers. Set in the foyer of the gallery, guests enjoy wine from Pegasus Bay Wines and canapes from Lizzies Cuisine. During the evening there is a silent art auction featuring the work of many wellknown Cantabrian Artists. The event sold out in its first year, priced at $75pp, tickets will sell quickly for the 2017 event. Trans-seasonal wear has a new protagonist in its sartorial story – palazzo pants.

Common signs and symptoms of bowel cancer may include changes in the normal pattern of going to the toilet that continue for several weeks (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely), blood in your bowel motion, tiredness and weight loss,” John Frye and Chris Wakeman say. Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is the latest outdoor water sport to hit New Zealand. It’s also one of the most popular activities to do this summer, especially in the Waimakariri, North Canterbury.

After a safety briefing, getting kitted out with a belted life jacket, some basic skills and a warm up, we headed out into the glassy waters of the Ashley Rakahuri Estuary at Waikuku Beach. The lagoon provided the perfect location to view schools of fish, large kahawai and the many protected bird species that have made the estuary home. The water was so clear we could see the bottom for most of the journey, but it turns a rich green blue towards the river mouth.

It’s a great way to explore an otherwise untouched area on a beautiful, chilled out evening. As we neared the end of our trip, we tried some yoga stretches and poses. caught up with Fleur for a chat. “Josh and I have been searching for the right location in Christchurch and believe that we have finally found it, making it the right time for us to have a presence there.” If you’ve been there, you’ll get it; it’s an uplifting experience and has a busy buzz – the perfect backdrop for a fun date night. When I ask what some of the highlights will be, Fleur is able to tempt me with: “Madam Woo Christchurch will offer the same inspired and energetic mashup of traditional Malaysian Hawker Food, fresh Kiwi produce and big, bold flavours.” Hawker rolls are great things. “There are so many great dishes you can eat – Beef and Chicken Ren Dang; Prawn and Pork Fried Noodles; authentic recipes. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’m sure everyone will be thinking about how they can show their loved one that they care and plan a special treat or something to make them feel special.

espite the obvious commercial spin that surrounds the modern day celebrations, it has a deep rooted origin, dating back to when Saint Valentine of Terni died and was martyred on 14 February 273 AD. How he died is a mystery, although one legend has it that when Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, reputed to be a priest, realised the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. • Crushed ice • 45ml Dancing Sands Distillery Sacred Spring Dry Gin • 30ml freshly squeezed lemon juice • 15ml sugar syrup • 6 cherries, 5 to crush, 1 for garnish • 1 sprig of mint for garnish

Place all ingredients into a mixing glass.

Muddle the cherries to extract the juice.

Crush some ice and add to a rocks glass.

Powell Fenwick is devoted to great culture as much as it is to delivering an integrated service defined by an economical system. It is no surprise therefore, that Yannakis has found a sense of belonging and tremendous success at the firm. Over a decade, Yannakis has earned extraordinary expertise in Pool Water Services as a Technical Director. Centre in Canterbury with the services engineering undertaking by Powell Fenwick. Yannakis’ outstanding portfolio also includes leadership of the $30 million EA Networks Sports Centre, and specialist consultancy work on the Liz van Welie Swim School in Tauranga and the Wanaka Aquatic Centre. He was recently chosen to work as the client representative for QEII Recreation and Sport Centre and to work on the new $300 million Metro Sports Centre. A palpably doting father and loving husband, Yannakis’ extraordinary career evolution can be distilled down to one key virtue that cannot be overstated: loyalty to community. This, combined with his special gift of helping to foster democratic participation among people of all ages, makes Yannakis an incredible asset to the Garden City. community triumph Sumner’s new surf lifesaving clubrooms epitomise Hawkins’ approach to building better communities.

he building with a ‘wave form’ roof has become a Sumner landmark, defining the entrance to the suburb. Architect David Hill says the success of a project often comes down to how the team members relate, communicate and work together. The seven members of the club’s rebuild committee, Hawkins, Wilson and Hill Architects and the consultant team pulled together for the award-winning $2.8 million project. Hill says the project benefited from regular site meetings, good communication and positive relationships between team members. “The Hawkins team was key to achieving this,” he says. “The standard of workmanship was high. For example, they laid a section of the curved roof on the ground so we could discuss and refine the details before installation,” says Hill. Hill sees the building as a milestone in Sumner’s earthquake recovery. “The positive feedback has given a lot of locals a sense of contribution.”

These guys were operating out of sea containers for four and a half years so they were super keen to get stuck in.” Andrea Johnson worked with Hawkins, alongside her husband, surf club president Murray. “We had a fantastic relationship with Hawkins. They were always incredibly professional and as passionate about the outcome for our club as we were.” “Many surf club members had a full time job on top of being involved in the build and Hawkins was very tolerant and obliging of our situation,” she says. Hawkins South Island Regional Manager Steve Taw says the new club facility is a true representation of what is possible when a construction firm and consultants partner with a community organisation. “The project team worked closely to provide cost effective and innovative solutions to challenges,” he says. “And to encourage local community engagement throughout the design process, we created an online forum to generate ideas which was well received.”
