y daughter was pretty upset the day she found out she was getting a little brother delivered and not the little sister she had been pinning all her hopes and dreams on. “I’ll be honest mum,” she said to me on the way home from the scan, “I really liked the idea of having a little sister who would look up to me.” “But honey,” I said to her, “don’t you realise how important your role as the sister of a little boy will be?” “How so?” “Well, that little brother of yours is likely to grow up to become someone’s husband, possibly even someone’s father, so that leaves you and me to teach him how to grow up to love and respect women and know the right way to treat them.” Well I’m not sure how much she bought the hormonally-driven speech, but considering being Johnny on the spot isn’t my greatest virtue, I think I did a pretty good job of it. It also got me thinking about the future and what I’m most excited about ABC AUDITED is how our worlds are opening up with possibilities; the fact that if through being a great big sister my daughter decides that leadership is her kind of thing, then she is going to have every chance she wants to nurture this. That to me is one of the greatest accomplishments of women to this day AUDITED – the freedom of choice.

What drives you as a sportswoman? I love the continuous challenge of the game and thrill of competing! I feel like there is no perfect round of golf and no matter what ranked player you are, you can always improve! You have taken out some of the biggest accolades in the sport both nationally and globally, what have been some of the most memorable experiences for you? Winning my two majors was probably some of the biggest moments in my career so far. However, I think my favourite moment ever was competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics and to be able to represent not only myself, but also my country and to be in that atmosphere alongside the best athletes in the world.

How did it feel to become a Member of the Order of New Zealand (MNZM) in the New Year’s Honours? It is a huge honour to have received the MNZM! I’m very lucky to be able to do what I love. To be awarded this prestigious Royal New Zealand honour is something I’m very grateful and proud of. You have been described as changing expectations for every young girl, how does it feel to be in a position to give future generations something to dream of and aspire to? Hearing from juniors that I am their role model and that I inspire them, actually inspires me to become a better player, person and role model, and make the game a little bit better for them! Why do you think you’ve been able to do so well – is it hard work, dedication, passion or all of the above? I think I have been very fortunate with the things that have happened in my career so far and I truly believe I am where I am today because of all the love and support all my team and family have given me every step of the way. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? This will be my 6th year on the LPGA for me! I’m really looking forward to another fun year on tour.

Labelled as a transcendent figure in the sport in 2017 by LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan, she has paved the way for young girls to enter a male dominated sport and demonstrated just what is possible when you’re led by your heart. “Some players change records, but what Lydia has done is change expectations for every young girl,” Whan says. “It used to be you’d dream of making it to the LPGA someday, but someday meant in your 20s, and playing your best golf even later. Lydia has changed those expectations. “Girls believe they can now do it at 14 and that’s because she was the one who did it first.” Metropol caught up with the world-leader on the road for the 2019 LPGA Tour.

in a gourmet picnic hamper and glorious classical music, at the beautiful Lake Hood. The Picnic Company’s passion for food and community is behind this unique event with plans for future pop-up gourmet and entertainment opportunities; from carefully crafted eats and cocktails, to collaboratively curated events and good vibes; all-inclusive events that will leave you delectably full, thirsts quenched and spirits entertained. With a passion for good food, a conscious approach to the integrity of ingredients and cooking, while recognising the abundance of inspiring and enchanting locations in Canterbury, it seems obvious that the

boutique ‘catering business’ will be well received. With a move away from the traditional sit down dinner that can feel stuffy and fussy, the company’s focus is on the social aspect of entertaining, the pleasure of planned celebration, creating a playful and leisurely ambience. The business seeks to craft casual yet elegant food in settings that celebrate alfresco aperitif and picnic occasions. The Picnic Company is also refining the creation of beautifully crafted picnic foods that can be enjoyed at destinations of your choice. Menus and events are designed as a collective effort with the client’s interest being primary focus, while encouraging that you trust the chefs to create menus based off what is in season, at its prime and will create memorable taste experiences. The Picnic Company will strive to always use the finest ingredients, which include free-range, organic, seasonal, hand crafted and locally sourced wherever possible. creativity innovation Capturing

Set in the figurative and literal heart of the city, The Cathedral Grammar School captures creativity and innovation both through its physical incarnation, and through a unique structure that is designed to get the very best out of each and every student.

I

n much the same way as the worldleading innovative junior school with its roof-top playground and slide combines with a rich and long history, so too does a commitment to tradition and the energy to explore culminate in a best of both worlds approach to education. “We’re very much about the balance of the traditional rigour of academia, but equally, we’ve got an eye on the exponentially changing world that the children are going to need to thrive in,” Cathedral Grammar Principal Scott Thelning explains. “A big part of that is creativity. We want to move away from our children being passive receivers of information, and instead become critical thinkers, analysers, creators and collaborators.” This understanding and reverence of the school’s history is captured in the catchphrase, ‘Aspiring since 1881’. ‘Aspiring’ speaks of the innovative future focus; ‘Since 1881’ denotes the long and illustrious history that underpins everything the school does. The unique structure, which includes a play-based Pre-School, a co-ed Junior School and for Years 4-8, a Boys’ and Girls’ School, enables Cathedral

Grammar to meet the unique needs of girls and boys while giving them the opportunity to work together. Students here learn from the best. Every year level benefits from the expertise of high-calibre specialist teachers across multiple subjects and with plenty of individual attention, every child’s strengths are identified and built on, with support provided where and when needed. One of the school’s greatest strengths is that it is a really tight, welcoming and warm community, and that comprises not just staff and students, but also the parent community too. “We promise our parents that we will nurture, know and grow their children because we want to make sure that our school is about the heart as well as the head,” Thelning says. “We want them to be able to leave our school being strong learners, but they are gritty, they’ve got resilience, they’ve got strength and great friendships.” Open Day is on Thursday 7 March with the Principal’s address at 9:30am. To book a personalised tour contact the registrar, Lydia Hemingway on 03 365 0385 or register online at www.register. cathedralgrammar.school.nz.

Gift Music The

In life, there are the watchers and the do-ers. Local violinist and composer Fiona Pears most certainly fits into the latter, perhaps best illustrated by her upcoming concert, from which all proceeds are going to support our city’s most vulnerable.

L

ong recognising the increasing number of homeless in Christchurch, Fiona decided to utilise her own skills to do what she could to help. “For years now, I have felt sad seeing the amount of homeless people in our city,” she says. “At the end of last year, I decided that instead of feeling sad I would do something about it.” Calling on her musical friends, she has put together a beautiful concert to raise much-needed funds. Featuring the New Zealand Army Band, Graham Wardrop and Fiona Pears herself, backed by some of Christchurch’s best musicians, the charity concert is being held at 7pm on 30 March at the Transitional Cathedral with 100 percent of the proceeds going to support the city’s most vulnerable. “The concert is called ‘The Gift of Music’ and I wanted the money raised to go towards medical expenses to help our street whānau through the winter of 2019,” Fiona says. Registered charity Street Wise has come on board to manage the funding and the organisation has already found doctors who will be able to provide the service at a lowered cost. “Everyone involved is giving their time for free, to enable us to raise as much as

possible on the night. The cathedral has donated the venue for the evening and I have friends putting up posters and working on the production for the night. “The support already is amazing but we need to let people know about it.” For more information, visit www.fionapears.com or www.facebook. com/streetwisenz.

up in Madras, India, as the youngest of 10 children. His family moved to Leicester, England where his music career began. During his career he has generated sales in excess of 140 million records, including 64 gold albums and 23 platinum, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe, and stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Las Vegas Walk of Fame. He has performed for the Queen four times and many dignitaries around the world. He put out his latest studio album, The Man I Want To Be in November last year with two notable covers from Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars. Engelbert says he likes to keep up-to-date in today’s music world. “I listen to programmes like The Voice and other talent shows. I listen to the music because the people that are singing it are usually singing what is happening in today’s world… so I keep up with my musical learning in that respect.” On his New Zealand tour he will be showcasing new music as well as original hits including Quando Quando Quando, Release Me, A Man Without Love, The Last Waltz and Am I That Easy To Forget. He says his latest album was also a love letter to his, wife of 52 years Patricia Healy, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. A strong believer in holistic and eastern medicine, Engelbert says she now has round the clock care at their California home but continues to fight the disease. “She does understand what you are talking about although she can’t reciprocate.” He says her treatment consists of holistic medicine and acupuncture. “Actually you know she’s making progress… very slow… and one has to be patient and keep the prayers coming in. Eastern medicine seems to be taking an effect on her which is good.” With a long career in the music industry, Engelbert says he’s had a few regrets – the biggest being a choice in management. “I’ve made some bad decisions in my career… for instance management, which has hindered me in my career.” With his eyes firmly on the future, Engelebert has a message for his Christchurch fans. “You can tell them I’m happy to be coming back to their wonderful country and I hope the people who come and see my show enjoy the programme I am bringing them.”

T

he 82-year-old legendary entertainer is returning to Christchurch on March 2 with his The Man I Want To Be Tour and says he loved visiting New Zealand. “It’s very near and dear to me. I love New Zealand. I’m not just saying that because I’m coming there… I love it mainly because they love my music.” First released 52 years ago on Engelbert’s Release Me album, Ten Guitars is considered by many as the unofficial anthem of New Zealand. Engelbert was delighted how popular the song became. “It’s massive over there. When I’m there I have to sing it a couple of times. I sing it once (myself) and then the audience sings it.” With over half of a century in the musical business, the father of four and grandfather of eight says he has no plans to stop. “I’m not ready to sit in front of the fire place and put my knees up and keep watching TV. No, no, no. “I’m still very active and my stage performance is very active… it’s almost like it used to be in the years gone by.” Engelbert says people “are usually surprised at the way I move on stage”. “To be honest I don’t feel (and people tell me) I don’t look my age, thank God. I’m still moving and dancing around on stage – it’s no problem for me.” Described often in the media as a “sultry swooner”, Engelbert has had his fair share of female attention when on stage but says “that was a thing of the past”. Asked if he still has underwear thrown at him, he replied “No. Occasionally somebody might do it to get attention it’s a thing of the past and I’m glad because none of those panties fit me,” he laughs. He puts his agility and good health down to exercise and losing 31lbs. “I’ve just finished doing a TV special in Hawaii (which is going to be released pretty soon) and I thought ‘I must look how I used to in the old days’ so I went on a strict diet and slimmed down.” His daily routine consists of half an hour on the treadmill in the morning as well as hitting the gym. “I think you should respect your body because without your body working correctly, you have no life.” The veteran singer entered the world as Arnold George Dorsey. Hottest event North Canterbury’s

It’s the hottest event on the North Canterbury social calendar and this year is no different, with the North Canterbury Wine and Food Festival set to bring some seasonal sizzle to the tail end of summer.

O

n Sunday 10 March, Waipara Valley’s Glenmark Domain will be hitting the social sweet spot, as thousands pack it to the brim with fun and festivities. In fact, the organisers of this North Canterbury gem have a little habit of making things bigger and better every year, with this year’s event proving no exception. For 2019, three new elements are being introduced, along with food and wine galore – the Long Lunch, Meet The Makers and a festival High Tea. Seated at long tables under the oaks, the Long Lunch will feature four small courses of seasonal delights, from the finest local chefs, paired with four North Canterbury wine tastes. The ultimate laidback way to experience the flavours of the region, culinary favourites Inati, Jonny Schwass and Barrys Bay Cheese will be pleasing palates You’re in it for the wine and food – and we get that – but this year with the help of Rekindle, you can

get into a bit of ‘making’ under the Glenmark Oaks too. Meet the makers and have a go with whittling techniques, rope and string making, and doll making workshops. At this year’s inaugural High Tea, gourmet blends from Nobel and Savage Tea Merchants will be paired with homemade baking from Glenmark Parish in a fabulous fundraiser for the local church, where the festival began 25 years ago! Expect vintage linens, floral china and a slice of slow living. The North Canterbury Wine Festival has thought of everything – even transport! Why not take a bus to the festival, so you can chill and enjoy all the good stuff on offer? Bus transport is available to and from the festival from Hanmer Springs, as well as from Christchurch and Lincoln. Nab your tickets at www.ncwineandfood.co.nz and we’ll see you at the coolest little wine festival in the country on Sunday 10 March!

Wife Melva has witnessed first-hand how the independence has helped Brian on many different levels. “It’s very convenient for him to get on his scooter and go,” she says. “He might go away for half an hour, I can go away and play bowls, and he comes back when he’s ready.” The couple are also the happy owners of two “wonderful” electric liftchairs that rise with ease when you’re ready to get up from your seat. Melva can’t praise the service they’ve received over the years by More Mobility highly enough. “They’ve been excellent. When he buys a new scooter, they deliver it. They have absolutely wonderful staff, and are always available if you need help and advice.” More Mobility was established in 2007 to provide mobility solutions and living aids for older people, those living with disabilities, or who are rehabilitating from illness or injury. Ourvets is excited to welcome Dr Angela Hartman, a Veterinary Radiology Specialist.

20 February 28, 2019 Metropol

n January, the Ourvets team welcomed Angela in order, to provide a specialist referral service to Christchurch and the wider Canterbury area. Angela is the only Veterinary Specialist Radiologist in the South Island and already offers her advanced skill and knowledge to the Nelson and wellington area. Angela has been working in the veterinary world for more than 20 years - her goal: to benefit as many patients, clients and veterinarians as possible during her career. With an extensive range of radiographic equipment – including digital radiographs, ultrasound and CT (the only small animal machine in the South Island) – Ourvets is equipped to support Angela with a wide range of diagnostic tools to assist in her decision making. When not at the clinic or working from home, Angela likes to spend time with the many retired working dogs that she and her partner have rescued – as well as her rescued cats, pigs, ducks, cattle, goats and sheep. “I could go on about these but you don’t have enough room on the page!” Angela says. “A dog’s love and trust are like no other relationship in life. The unadulterated love they give purifies my mind and makes me a better person. I will always be surrounded by dogs, dog hair on the carpet and all!” Angela adds a wealth of knowledge and passion to the growing Ourvets team and they look forward to her working alongside them to offer clients the very best service. To find out more about what Ourvets can offer you and your pets, visit www.ourvets.co.nz or visit any of the practices – St Albans, Parklands, Riccarton and Halswell. Across its multi-locations each veterinarian’s area of expertise fits together to create an extensive portfolio of veterinary skills and knowledge.

Only the best! Only the best is good enough for the team at specialist wedding and event venue, Rossendale Vineyard. They are constantly looking for ways to improve their already consummate service to clients.

“W

e have made a small change to our name to make it trip off the tongue more easily,” says manager Graham Jones. “We’re now Rossendale Vineyard rather than The Vineyard@Rossendale. Many people used to refer to us as that anyway.” Now too there is a stunning video of the

venue and its surrounding environment online at www.rossendalevineyard.co.nz. Much of the footage was shot from a drone and the aerial views only serve to reinforce just how picturesque the rural vineyard setting is. It would be very difficult not to fall in love with the place immediately and say “That’s where I want to have my

wedding. Nowhere else will do.” There are also shots of the interior of the elegant specially-designed venue itself, superbly dressed for a sumptuous wedding feast. “The video complements the 360-degree tour of the venue that we have had online for some time. We have found that to be extremely useful, especially for potential clients from overseas so they can see what we have to offer.” The team from Rossendale Vineyard will be at the Great New Zealand Bridal Show at the Addington Events Centre on Sunday 31 March between 9am and 3:30pm. Graham will show you how Rossendale Vineyard can turn your wedding ideas into reality. Otherwise you can contact him on 03 322 7780 or email gra@rossendale.co.nz.

Maximising “F your investment How do you choose the right agent to sell your home and what should you expect from them? Real estate specialist Juline Grassam makes some suggestions.

or most people selling their home means selling their most important asset,” Juline says. “Homeowners are all interested in the same thing – maximising their investment. Being able to trust their agent to achieve this is at the heart of the relationship between vendor and agent.” Juline speaks not only about trust, but about truly

personalised service and about homeowners being able to build a genuine rapport with their agent. “You need to feel comfortable with your agent and really gel with them. If you don’t, then they are not right for you.” Juline explains that one of the better ways to identify a good real estate agent is by the process of referral. “What you also want is an experienced professional who understands the importance of getting you the best result. Our team is tight knit and has some sixty years collective experience in the industry.” Grassam Real Estate is known to have a real flair, talent and skill for effective marketing to bring the widest collection of buyers to a property. Their hot pink and black vehicle really stands out and they bring this vividness and passion to selling your home. “We genuinely want to help our vendors move on to the next chapter in their lives.” You can contact Juline on 03 352 8539, or 027 232 7561. Seeing the city sights They say good things come in small packages, which rings true for our beautiful city and is also one of the reasons why Caroline’s Kombi Tours are so popular.

P

roviding a unique and fun way to explore Christchurch, one of the wonderful things about a Kombi Van is its small size, which is a great way of bringing people together. “When filled with people it brings a real closeness,” says Caroline, who runs the business with her husband Murray. “Our tours are about learning new things and having fun but it’s also about people connecting and getting to know each other.” For business owners looking for an enjoyable team building idea – come on board for a tailored Caroline’s Kombi experience! With many small businesses doing big things, the tours also provide 1 a fantastic way to showcase and support local businesses. From tasting the amazing Bennetto Organic Fairtrade Chocolate to drinking a shot of Number 8 from the new business Ball & Cue, our city is full of small businesses providing the best in food and beverage.

Visiting the Christchurch farmers’ markets is something everyone should experience and it’s also exciting to see Riverside Farmers Market will be open in a few months, on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Cashel Street. The market will be full of local growers and small businesses – an amazing addition to the central city. Another small and beautiful place to be proud of is our world-class facility for the music and arts of Canterbury, The Piano. The architectural design is inspired by a grand piano and the name of the building in Māori is small bird – the Pipiwharauroa. The shining cuckoo are the conveyors of messages of singers and entertainers; and are also of significance for the Ngāi Tūāhuriri. The Lonely Planet has ranked Christchurch as a global street art capital – for a small city we are BIG on art. With Caroline’s Art Tours, you will see the best

of the city’s street art, as well as other amazing outdoor sculptures. Caroline’s Kombi specialises in small groups and the company focuses on providing a fun-filled experience, sharing wonderful stories and fun facts, along with their extensive local knowledge. “We enjoy meeting new people and would love to take your family, friends, employees, visitors or grandparents on a journey to showcase the arts, but of course we also have other tours available. We take great pride in providing our customers the best possible experience – we would love to hear from you.” Some of the fantastic feedback from one of the company’s many happy customers: “Highly recommend. Was thoroughly enjoyable and something a little different and a uniquely NZ experience A++++.” Visit www.cktours.nz to book a tour or for more information call/email Caroline on 027 600 4502, caroline@cktours.nz.

women in business

Min Sarginson Min Sarginson began working in real estate back in 1983, working briefly in the city then moving to a local company based in Lyttelton. She launched her own company in 1998 continuing to specialise in the harbour. Back then things were simple and authorities to sell could be based on a handshake.

“Adelphi Insurance Brokers will ensure you have the right policy for your circumstances and your needs, when it counts – at claim time”

These days of ever mounting legislation have changed the face of the industry, mostly for the better, and it keeps Min and her team of 7 busy on all fronts.

Andrea Phillips

Min’s philosophy since day one has been to cut the hype and simply concentrate on providing great service and getting great results and the people she has attracted to her team reflect those same values.

Andrea has been a Registered Financial Adviser, actively visiting clients for the last eight years. She has a unique understanding of client needs and is always there to lend a helping hand from quote to claim. She is very passionate about helping people protect their most important asset, their health and their ability to earn income. Emily means business. While businesses globally have moved forward with women in leadership and senior management roles, New Zealand is typically behind the trend - however change is coming. “In Advisory, we see a significant number of new business start-ups in New Zealand being driven by women,” remarks Emily Bradley of Duns. “With 2/3 of our management team being female, we’re fully aware of the opportunities that gender diversity brings to the table. We’re continually creating stronger levels of support through effective partnerships, to ensure businesses realise their potential.” Emily sees the accounting world undergoing dramatic change with a new set of needs. “By blending specialist tax and business advisory teams, we’ve built a foundation of knowledge that provides proactive advice that really adds value for our clients where it counts.” With close to 14 years in the industry, Emily has a wealth of knowledge in both the chartered and commercial industries. Her experience dealing with a wide range of businesses (including Multi National Enterprise, owner-managed and not-for-profits) has left Emily in good stead to handle a wide range of tax and accounting matters. “The greatest success for me, is helping others achieve their goals.” A mantra that clearly defines who she is. In short, Emily means business.

In the city Four Ave Festivities Sport of kings What do you get when you mix the stylish fun of Polo – the ‘sport of Kings’ – the hottest DJ sets, fashion, food, beverages, North Hagley Park and the weekend? I picked it as the hottest event on last year’s social calendar after attending and this year will be no different. With corporates and high-end brands involved, it really will be the place to be. The raw energy of polo mixed with the fun, fashion and music was something to behold last year and the chance to turn your hand to divot stomping and learning how to use a mallet are just a small glimpse of what’s on offer Saturday 2 March.

Broad-ly Inspiring Christchurch BMW is playing prestigious host to ‘Broad-ly speaking’ on 8 March from 6pm to 8pm at the new showrooms 104 Moorhouse Ave. Six inspiring women including, Dr. Hana O’Regan, Hon. Margaret Austin, Theresa Gattung, Chloë Swarbrick and Jacqueline Fahey, spanning experience from life as a refugee to a revolutionary feminist artist, tell it like it is. With brands like Pegasus Bay Wine, the Boneline and Black Estate on hand and catering done by the Catering Dept, it’s sure to be a good night to dig deep into the female psyche and I’m sure there will be a laugh or two. It’s a women-only event with proceeds going to support Aviva, which gets behind women dealing with domestic violence – a very worthy cause.

Garden Theatre The Botanic Gardens is hosting the Anthony Harper Summer Theatre until 17 March and there’s always a laugh as they present King Arthur, ‘An epic tale retold with knights, a holy grail, a wizard and a magical lake!’ in association with Rollicking Entertainment. Sword fights and a fun night with the picnic blanket is a great way to enjoy one of Christchurch’s gems. The Botanic Garden is always great for a walk in beforehand but don’t leave the picnic basket at home! It’s a free event suitable for all ages but a donation will be gratefully accepted on the night. The Murray Aynsley Lawn is located near the Heritage Rose Garden at the back of the hospital.

Canadian chart-topper It seems that North Hagley Park is where all the action is happening in March, with Bryan Adams on Sunday 17 March at 4pm. This is the chance for all those who grew up with his music in the 80s and 90s to rock it like you did in the Summer of ‘69. Seriously this Canadian chart-topper is a top performer and with a musical drought as big music acts skip us for Dunedin, this will be one for the Canterbury concert-goers to get in behind.

If you have an event happening and want to let me know I’d love to hear from you. Flick me an email at nickinchristchurch@gmail.com.

HOSPO HELP FOR ALCOHOL LICENSING

A successful hospitality business in the 21st century requires not just the magic mix of taste and style with an acute business sense, but also a deep knowledge of the regulatory environment.

T

he Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, 2012 considerably increased the responsibilities of hospitality owners. With an overarching objective of ‘minimising harm’, owners must show actively how they are doing this. With a combined 30 years’ experience in alcohol licensing, Christchurch’s own Alcohol Consulting Group recognises that the knowledge required to gain and retain an alcohol license can be daunting for small and large businesses alike. Comprising specialists from a regulatory background, Consultants Helene Faass, Al Lawn and Jenn Ramsay have worked within the range of agencies that have an interest in the granting of licences. Jenn and Helene understand what agencies are looking for from potential licensees. They have seen licences refused and understand why; they know how agencies work, what they are looking

for and why they want things done a particular way. By using their knowledge and experience, they can explain to agencies and decision-makers why it might be difficult for a hospitality operator to respond to certain requirements. As well as agency experience, Al Lawn has been a District Licencing Committee member. As a decision-maker, he understands exactly what current decision-makers are looking for. In their previous roles, Helene, Jenn and Al have seen people struggle with what was being asked for and needing help. Working nationwide, the team can travel to clients at their premises. Seeing hospitality premises on site and in action enables them to give the best possible advice. Recognising that office hours do not apply in hospitality, they are available as and when they are needed. They bring a 360-degree approach to licencing. They’ll help with making

applications, training staff and all aspects of risk management, including alcohol management plans. They understand how to balance regulatory requirements with success in hospitality. “We minimise your compliance costs and help you to fully focus on the entertainment side of your business,” Helene says. “We perform a liaison role as well,” Jenn adds. “We work with the 2012 Act daily and we know it inside out, so we can help legal teams get to grips with paperwork and hearing preparation to get good results faster.” “We also strongly advise developers to consult from the outset about how design affects licencing,” Al says. “It will save you money and provide you with certainty.” Alcohol Consulting Group tailors assistance to the assessed risk of each premises, so that clients don’t end up paying more than they need.

fashion Utility pulls a

Practical Punch By Tracey Edwardes

World War II Britain first gave us utility clothing and it’s now a cool, calm and very collected way to dress. Having a recent resurgence, it has returned for 2019 in bold and brave designs.

BANDIT TRUCKER JACKET

ONE TEASPOON WARRIOR

F

abrics and tailors back then were in short supply, so it was all practicality in boxy-shaped canvas. Clothing stayed safe in natural colourways from neutrals to navys, tans to uniform whites – we still keep this purposeful austerity, a nod to more sombre times. Manufacturers were encouraged in the ‘40s to forgo flair and create for utility value. Shoes were chunky and sturdy. Garments became a swissarmy-knife of the wardrobe - functional not impressionable. However, this season it’s totally turning heads – with designer pieces from Fendi to Hermes marching down the catwalks. New rules say playfully contrast – a silky shirt under a khaki jacket, a feminine ‘40s

pencil skirt with a miltary shirt. Even bulky boots look swish, polished to the nines and boiler suits, worn just with nonchalant attitude and hands in pockets, just rocks. Combat trousers are thankfully a more flattering looser cut than the solider version. Fabrics are from cotton drill and denim to luxe leather and canvas – it’s sturdy on the streets. Utility has morphed into a clean-cut, functional edgy style that milks all the practicalities such as big belts with purses and attachments, cargo pants and patch pockets, detachable hoods, rows of chucky zips, and oversized pockets to hold our XL phones. Symmetry has flown out of the window too. The aim is to have fun playing combat while dressing to code.

etropol catches up with the designer ahead of her role as part of the prestigious judging panel for the iD International Emerging Designer Awards in Dunedin. How did you make your commercial start? The idea began when my partner Wayne and I were living in Paris. We wanted to return to New Zealand and start something of our own and we opened our first store on Auckland’s Kitchener Street in 1993. Making clothes has always been my passion so I’m incredibly lucky that I have been able to do what I love every day. How would you describe your design philosophy? I aim to create timeless classics that will last a lifetime not a season. What are you most looking forward to about joining this year’s prestigious judging panel for the iD International Emerging Designer Awards? It is very exciting to celebrate emerging local talent and see the strength of the future of our industry.

The darling of design Kate Sylvester is an iconic New Zealand designer whose collections have been described as embodying “intelligence, witty irreverence, sophistication and modern femininity”, resulting in designs which are all at once eccentric, beautiful and intelligent.

It’s an industry that is said to take no prisoners. Why do you think New Zealand has connected so strongly with what you do? I’m constantly looking for inspiration whether that is from art, movies, books, music – all the things I love. New Zealand is a constant stimulus; it’s a beautiful place with beautiful people and an endless source of creativity. How have you been able to stay so current and create a brand with longevity? A willingness to evolve, staying honest and true to my aesthetic, supporting long lasting relationships with our incredible local fashion community. What does 2019 have in store for you? We are looking to introduce a range of new product lines to the brand, plus have some exciting new store developments in the works for later this year.

Dental hygiene and oral health are often taken for granted, but are actually essential parts of our everyday lives. The major role of a dental hygienist is in the provision of oral health education and the prevention of oral disease through keeping the mouth, teeth and gums clean and healthy.

“I

t’s never too late or too early to start on the life-long journey of oral health,” says Jiljane Delaney, who has her own independent dental hygiene practice. “I see myself as a prevention specialist and a coach. If you come to see me and learn how to keep your mouth healthy, you are less likely to need to visit

a dentist. A healthy mouth is integral to whole body health.” Jiljane has been in this field of dentistry for nearly 30 years and has made her work a true vocation. “I’m passionate about my job. I love that my patients leave feeling really good about themselves and with the knowledge of what to do to prevent or control oral issues.” Jiljane also loves that she gets to use some cool equipment. “It’s not just dentists who use power tools. I have the very latest airflow polishing device for effectively removing deposits from around a tooth, including below the gumline. It’s state of the art, is a requirement for the treatment and maintenance of implants and is very helpful during the wearing of braces.” You will find Jiljane at 214 Papanui Rd on Thursdays and Saturdays between 8am and 6pm. Creating Summer Bodies

Taming tummies, refining rears and thinning thighs for more than one million people worldwide, the Cooltech process of freezing fat has arrived in Christchurch and is exclusively available at Encorė Cosmetic Clinic. Owner Dr Grant Bellaney says if you start your treatment now, you’ll see results in time for your summer holiday.

C

ooltech is European technology and comes with a larger range of adapters than other brands, meaning a more extensive range of body areas, including those with curved contours, can be treated. Available in 40 countries, the fat cooling process is hugely popular and is fast becoming the go-to treatment for spot reduction of fat in New Zealand. Cooltech freezes the fat cells which then break down and are expelled through the natural metabolic process. While Encorė Cosmetic Clinic offers the full range of cosmetic treatments, it does have a special focus on fat reduction. As well as Cooltech, Encorė also offers the more traditional tumescent liposuction and non-invasive fat reduction using heating with their TriLipo technology. TriLipo combined with Cooltech is known as the ‘fire and ice’ treatment. Encorė is the only clinic in Christchurch equipped to offer all three treatment options. The team at Encorė can advise clients on the best option or combination of options and client preference is the first consideration: the experienced team understands

34 February 28, 2019 Metropol

that for some people, liposuction is not their prefered choice. The Cooltech process, or freezing of fat, can remove fat in specific stubborn pockets and is the clinic’s preferred non-invasive fat reduction treatment, as it has a higher patient satisfaction rate than TriLipo. At Encorė, aesthetic registered nurses can treat clients with Cooltech Monday to Friday. Treatments last around 70 minutes. Two adaptors can be used simultaneously, reducing treatment time. Most clients need 1-2 treatments 8-12 weeks apart. For most, one treatment is enough. Results are visible in 6-8 weeks, with a 95 percent satisfaction rate globally. Cooltech treatments are not painful but tingling or heat at the treatment points is possible and you can feel the vacuum pressure of the adaptors. Post-treatment, possible localised redness could take a few hours to subside. Short term side effects such as altered sensation or discomfort can occur. Find Encorė Cosmetic Clinic www.encorehealth.co.nz and 248 Papanui Road in Merivale Village where off-street parking is available. Phone: 03 356 0214

They deliver locally, nationally and internationally through Interflora. Allan began learning his trade in his teens; now, with more than 40 years in the business, the fully qualified florist says he wouldn’t be doing anything else. “I love my job – I’m passionate about my work!” All Allan’s certificates, including his diploma and Master Florist, were obtained through NZ Professional Florists. Currently, Allan is President of Interflora Pacific Unit, which necessitates quite a lot of international travel.

In fact, Allan’s standing in the world of floristry is held with such high regard that on 23 February, he headed to Philadelphia to judge the Interflora World Cup, one of the biggest, most prestigious floral events in the world. There are 23 countries taking part this year. Allan was one of only six judges. When asked about his surname, Allan smiles. Way back in time, and due to his French lineage, Allan’s surname was spelt Jardin – the French word for garden. He agrees that yes, it does seem that he and flowers were destined to be together. “I

f the head is impacted by the force of a head knock or mild brain trauma, this causes the head bones to jam up. The membranes surrounding and protecting the brain and forming the spinal canal, then twist and tighten to try to accommodate these jammed bones. body Life-long

CONFIDENCE

re you starting to realise that body confidence is not just about what size clothes you wear or what number your scales read? In your 20s, fit and healthy means wearing clothes that make you feel good and look a certain way. But there comes a time in life when you realise that confidence in your body is so much deeper than that. For athletes it comes when getting out of bed the morning after a competition lacks the usual spring and ease. For mums it may be after having a baby and suddenly facing the realisation that even a quick run across the road doesn’t feel ‘secure’ anymore. For others, it’s when you start to find getting up off the floor ‘hard’. But whatever the trigger, I hear the same question every day – “is this it; is this all I can expect from my body from now on?” The answer from me is a resounding NO! Too often people put their aches, pains and difficulties down to the ‘normal aging process’, or they’re told to just accept that they can no longer do the activities they love. But it really doesn’t have to be this way. Movement

is a basic requisite for happiness – and you deserve to enjoy the freedom and confidence your body has to offer. So how can you stay supple, strong and fit – and keep doing what you love beyond your 20s and well into your retired years?

1.

Find a love of regular movement and activity

2.

Move in lots of different directions and lots of different ways

3.

If you have specific injuries or illness, seek help from experts and never accept ‘I’m just too old’ as an excuse from yourself.

BEFORE

AFTER

Body & Skin Confidence We chat to skin guru Nicky Quinn about the latest technology in non-invasive treatments – Viora Skin Tightening and Body Contouring. Can you tell us a bit about your body contouring and skin tightening treatments? Viora body contouring and skin tightening is a non-invasive and gentle treatment that uses radio frequency and vacuum therapy to tighten and tone the skin, contour the body and shrink fat cell volume. Loose or saggy skin is often formed after pregnancy, weight loss or just through aging as we lose the natural elasticity in our skin. It’s been great for tightening the “mummy tummy” loose skin, reducing cellulite and tightening up the skin around the eyes, jawline, legs and arms.

How does it work? The radio frequency initiates tissue heating in the dermis layer of the skin, as well as the hypodermis below it (fat storage layer) to stimulate new collagen formation and facilitate the reduction of fat cell volume, resulting in improved and tighter skin texture. For body contouring, the combined mechanical vacuum therapy works on lymphatic drainage, minimising the look of lumpy skin and sculpting the body. Treatments take about 30 minutes, and we recommend between four to eight treatments for best results. It’s a fantastic alternative for those not wanting to go under the knife!

Are the treatments safe? Yes, the treatments are FDA approved and clinically proven. The radio frequency energy used is non-ionising radiation, and on a scale of frequency is lower than the radiation from a TV or FM radio. In addition, it isn’t light based energy, so there is no danger of a skin response, unlike with laser treatments. It’s fast, effective and completely pain-free, with no downtime. Most clients describe the treatment as very relaxing! Skin tightening treatments start at $199 Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa 209 Papanui Road, Merivale 03 355 6400 quinnbeautyspa.co.nz

Locals leading

breast cancer research

When Angelina Jolie announced she was having her breasts and ovaries removed to minimise her risk of cancer, she introduced the concept of genetic testing to a global audience.

J

olie’s mother died of ovarian cancer at age 56, so the world-famous actress got tested for a common genetic variation (or change in her DNA) associated with increased cancer risk. People with a BRCA1 gene variation have up to 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer at some point in their life and approximately 50 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer. When Jolie tested positive for a BRCA1 variation, she had radical surgery to reduce her chance of suffering the same fate as her mother. The increased risk posed by variations in BRCA1 or its sister gene, BRCA2, is well known thanks to numerous international studies. But the impact of myriads of other DNA variations found during genetic testing are still a mystery. That’s where geneticist Associate Professor Logan Walker and his University of Otago, Christchurch research team come in. They are world leaders in studying the impact of genetic variations on breast and ovarian cancer. As Walker explains, a genetic variation is when a specific part of

your DNA differs from the norm. A variation is like a sentence with a few words or letters out of place. You can still understand the meaning but it’s not grammatically correct. Each of us have thousands of variations and many don’t cause disease. As genetic testing becomes cheaper and more accessible, hundreds of new variations are being found. What researchers such as Walker are doing is identifying ones that occur in clusters of people with a particular disease or family history. They then study in the laboratory what the variation actually does in the body. This kind of research involves studying the DNA of tens of thousands of people. Walker is New Zealand’s only member of an international genetic consortia sharing cases and DNA to unravel the mysteries of variations related to breast and ovarian cancers. This collaborative approach means the DNA of women getting treatment or advice from the Canterbury DHB and involved in Walker’s research are contributing to global studies aimed at preventing unnecessary deaths.

Walker is one of ten scientists sharing details of their work at a Te Papa Hauora (Christchurch Health Precinct) evening of short talks in March. The ‘We’re talking health’ event celebrates exceptional health research in Canterbury. Te Papa Hauora is a partnership between the city’s main health and research organisations – the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, Ara Institute of Canterbury, the Canterbury DHB, and Matapopore, which is Ngāi Tahu’s earthquake recovery agency. It facilitates collaboration to improve public health and help commercialise research discoveries made here in Canterbury. Walker’s work is an example of how health research is increasingly being done – in collaboration between organisations. Being part of the Health Precinct, partners meet regularly to find ways to work together on life-saving and internationallyrelevant research projects. Go to www.talkinghealth.org.nz to book a seat (numbers are limited) or find out more about Te Papa Hauora at www.healthprecinct.org.nz.

A fling with bling By Tracey Edwardes

It’s an exciting decision that can be made in a heartbeat, or after months of pondering. After all, it’s a forever investment, a future heirloom – the token of true love. While still mainly classic in design and elegance, there are a few fabulous points of difference when it taking a fling with bling in 2019. We look at the latest trends in engagement rings that you can expect to see this year.

1.

2.

Split-shank settings Two open bands, often of fine diamantes, spread out to join the centre piece. This gives the illusion of wearing two rings, creating a delicate, open design. Oval cuts Model Hailey Baldwin’s engagement ring from her beau Justin Beiber – an opulent oval diamond solitaire – stunned the media and cinched the trend. Oval shapes can also go to extremes, narrowing to elongated points; a nod to art deco.

3.

4.

Sapphires Oh so royal in blue, as seen on the elegant fingers of Lady Diana and Kate Middleton – sapphires are stars in the latest ring choices. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga and Princess Eugenie were pretty in pink, with feminine rosy-hued sapphires. Stackable and nested diamonds Paris Hilton doubled up with this trend of more is more. Rings that nest in together or create a row on the ring finger is all the go. Three otherwise delicate bands are a dramatic eye-catching ensemble. And then there’s the flexibility to wear just one or two.

5.

6.

7.

8.

9.

10.

Halo settings A cushioned solitaire gem encircled by a cluster of diamantes is a graceful classic that makes a standout statement. We will also see unique takes on classic spheres, with intricate and unique shaping. Coloured gems Coloured precious gems are personalising brides to be. Emeralds, aquamarine, topaz, ruby, morganite, and other dazzlers, create a perfect marriage combined with the scintillating sparkle of diamonds. Yellow gold bands After years of whiter metals taking the limelight, yellow gold is finally warming and brightening the tone. Gold is encircling ring fingers in hardwearing 14k and 18k luxury. Three stones We are still in love with Megan Markle’s three-stones-in-a-row tradition. However, a modern twist upon a classic is incorporating different shapes and coloured gemstones. Interesting shapes Gems are also going tear drop, diamond, rectangular or pear-shaped. And some sparkly clusters are more organically formed, as opposed to manufactured. East-west settings With the gem set horizontally across the width of the band, the ring then appears more fluid in design – and interestingly, imparts a different kind of sparkle.

ia Sollertia Jewellery has been creating exquisite custom-made jewellery for 23 years, from rings bracelets and bangles, through to necklaces, pendants and earrings, or whatever else is desired. Just like food and fashion, jewellery changes with the times, and Via Sollertia’s jewellery designer, Clare, says there’s a definite shift towards more contemporary, eclectic styled rings nowadays. “There’s an interesting move towards rings being comprised of a mix of shapes, colours and cuts - as in marquise, baguette and princess, for example. But it’s also about how the ring sits on the finger,” Clare says. Via Sollertia prides itself on unsurpassable craftsmanship in producing bespoke jewellery that absolutely says it all.

Mr Hospitality By Jenafor Rollins

Peter Morrison has spent his professional career in the hospitality industry and his credentials and prestigious awards support his ‘guru’ status. HAVE YOU VISITED THEM ALL? ASK OUR STAFF AND WE’LL SEND YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Where did it all start? I began my career back in the mid-1970s as a management trainee with the company now known as Lion and then gained extensive experience in numerous hotels around the country. I moved to Christchurch in 1986 when I became the General Manager of the Hotel Russley and then I took the next logical step and I became one of the owners of that establishment and started my divergence from management to ownership.

We caught up with Peter at The Classic Villa about his hospitality journey and how we can support the industry yearround.

This has led you to The Classic Villa Boutique Hotel. This place is impeccable and I felt like a queen just walking in. Then I’ve accomplished my goal. I want my patrons to feel like the royalty they are. I’m very proud of this boutique hotel and its history, but mostly the atmosphere and comfort people feel as soon as they walk through the door. It is a special place that my partner Jan and I took over in 2006 and we work hard to attain and retain its 5 star Qualmark rating. Prior to moving here, I successfully owned and managed Morrison Hospitality Management Ltd where our attention was on a number of accommodation bar and restaurant establishments including Morrisons on Merrin in Avonhead and the Mansfield House & Tavern in Merivale. I have enjoyed each location and experience, but The Classic Villa holds a special place in my heart and I just love it. More importantly I love what I do. In 2018 you received an Order of Merit (MNZM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to hospitality, when you were called ‘the host extraordinaire’. I was surprised and totally humbled by the honour. It was so good the hospitality/tourism industries were recognised. I never expected it, doing something I love. Again, it has always been about the people, the experience and the memories. To receive this honour was very touching.

In your 40 years of industry experience, how have things changed or evolved? Travel is something that just about everyone thinks about and participates in these days. People dream about their next vacation; where they are going to stay, what they are going to see and eat, and people enjoy talking about their experiences and recommending places or not. Hospitality caters to and focuses on providing ‘wow’ factor, comfort and enjoyment. With all the hospitality that happens on a daily basis around New Zealand and in Christchurch specifically, our industry can hold their head high because we really do care about the customer experience. I have served on the national board of Hospitality New Zealand for over 10 years, currently National Vice President and Canterbury branch President. I see first-hand the desire and detail that goes into hospitality protocols and systems; they are top notch. One of the topics I have spoken about is the importance of community support. If locals and tourists don’t come out and support their establishments, there is no choice but to close. Hospitality is a low margin industry. It’s all about volume. Although it’s wonderful to be a location of choice for tourists, hospitality is more about locals supporting hospitality establishments to keep us going year-round. Mini-breaks or vacations to stay in accommodation within your own city provide a relaxing close-to-home experience. Trying food locations to support local cuisine is important, as well as meeting up with friends at a bar. Hospitality stays in business because of local community support and we appreciate that here in Canterbury; Christchurch especially. You represent New Zealand’s tourism and hospitality sectors on the world stage as a member and Senior Vice President of SKAL International, you’re a friend of the Arts Centre and you are the Vice-President of the national board of Hospitality New Zealand… What can I say? I am committed to this industry and its owners and managers as well as the patrons who frequent them; working together, supporting each other creates those lifelong memories and experiences worth sharing. I can’t imagine doing anything else and don’t plan to stop any time soon.

More than your local micro-brewery we are a journey. Visit our Brewery and Taproom for delicious beers made from NZ Malts and Hops and enjoyed by like-minded people. Great beers and food using a wide range of delicious, responsibly and locally sourced ingredients. We are committed to the journey and want to be a test bed for innovation.

Your credentials and awards are of the highest nature in your field. Was hospitality always your first choice? It’s always been about people. My passion encompasses people enjoying themselves at the location they stay at; all about the memories they make and when they look back to the time they spent at a specific place; what those memories hold; how they recall the experience and the feelings they felt; the stories they can tell. That sums up hospitality to a tee and I was fortunate to find my ‘calling’ early in life, straight from Wellington College.

A partnership of perfection Creating the perfect marriage between cuisine and wine is a unique art and one which local institution The Monday Room has up its culinary sleeve.

W

ith Head Chef Eeva Torvinen turning her talented hand to creating a menu that utilises the techniques and flavours of her Finnish background to bring flavour to the table, the central city hotspot is a dining destination not to be missed. “I want to create dishes that make people talk while they dine,” Eeva says. Metropol catches up with Eeva about popular dish Three Little Pigs, while renowned Wine Consultant at Wine Sentience, Stephen Wong finds its perfect partnership in a local Waipara tipple that offers an exquisite complement. Meal: Three Little Pigs Three Little Pigs is a dish that has three different parts of pork, cooked in different ways, Eeva explains. “Slow-cooked pork cheek, also known as pork jowl, is fatty and rich. It is wrapped in savoy cabbage leaves, which are blanched and glazed with syrup to add sweetness,” she says. “Pork fillet is cured and then sous vide for four hours, producing a tender, lean fillet which is then pan fried for colour and flavour. Meanwhile, belly bacon is cooked

slowly until it is crispy, bringing saltiness and texture to the dish.” The pork combination is then combined with smooth and buttery parsnip puree and finished with a Nordic inspired tart, while sea buckthorn dressing gives a sweet and sour flavour profile. Wine match: Black Estate Damsteep Riesling 2017 According to Wine Consultant at Wine Sentience, Stephen Wong, Riesling which is often overlooked, yet infinitely versatile, could have been purpose built for Three Little Pigs; a dish which delivers rich, fatty sweetness sandwiched between savoury, saline austerity and fresh crunchy astringency. “It resonates with the kaleidoscope of

Riesling’s varied expression in much the same way that a classic chypre perfume is composed of a trinity of interlinked but contrasting vertices.” Thankfully, Canterbury is home to some of New Zealand’s most celebrated expressions of Riesling – with the complex patchwork of soils; from gravel to clay to limestone allowing this noble grape to display its riches fully. “Black Estate’s minimal-interventionist Damsteep Riesling 2017 hails from an organic vineyard at the foot of the Omihi saddle, planted during the previous millenium. “Perceptibly dry and racy yet powerfully built and arrestingly perfumed, it is as refreshing as it is profound; weaving a narrative of cloudy skies over bleak rolling hills, yet tinged with a honeyed stonefruit sweetness of nostalgia and finishing on a note of stoic pithiness and chalky resilience.”

ake 43 Degrees Café, for instance. Recently the café merged with local catering company Bell & Co, renowned for delivering to your door salads that are nourishing, nutrient rich and superbly fresh. With the food philosophy ‘to promote social and environmental wellbeing by creating beautiful food’, it’s easy to understand why 43 Degrees Café owner Mia Lu is thrilled with this merger. “People are aware of the link between health and diet now – it’s cool to think vegan and organic, and care where food comes from. Our salads of seasonal vegetables, fruits, grains and pulses are I00 percent beneficial to health and are delicious!” Apart from catering for private functions, corporate events, Christmas functions, birthdays and barbecues etc., Mia envisages branching out to cafés, hotels and, most crucially, schools. Her goal is to introduce their salad boxes to teachers’ groups initially and thereby filter down to where healthy eating is most needed – to children. “I’d love schools to have healthy options available and for children to find that good food truly has lots of variety, is really colourful and is totally yummy!” With all the food made onsite by a professional chef at 43 Degrees Café’s commercial kitchen, it appears that from the merging of these two businesses, catering in Christchurch is about to get awesome! PUMPKIN ORECCHIETTE WITH SPINACH&SAGE A warm pumpkin and pasta salad is like autumn on a plate, so we’ve put together one of our culinary favourites in time for the seasonal changeover.

1.

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Slice sugar pumpkin in half and place cut side down on a baking sheet. Bake for 45 minutes before removing from oven and peeling off the skin. Puree with a potato masher or in a food processor. If time is of the essence, use a can of unsweetened pumpkin puree.

2.

Cook orrecchiete (or another type of pasta) in salted water until very al dente. Drain and return to the pot.

3.

In a large skillet heat olive oil. Saute onion, garlic, sage, red pepper flakes and nutmeg, seasoned with salt, until the onions are soft and translucent, then transfer into pasta pot.

4.

Stir pumpkin, chicken broth, sour cream and spinach into the pasta mixture. Spread in a greased baking dish.

5.

Sprinkle the top with bread crumbs and cheese and bake in a preheated 200 degree C oven for 30 minutes. Serving suggestion: Chuck in some chorizo sausage or fried diced chicken if you prefer a meatier version.

Destination Recharge! By Jenafor Rollins

Hanmer Springs, only a 90 minute drive from the city, has the reputation for being a sports destination and all that encompasses, from cycling, tramping and off roading, to boating, fishing, bird watching and hunting.

A haven of heavenly ideas, Quilting supplies & Haberdashery

he less known secret is that Hanmer Springs is the perfect destination for a day trip or longer, simply when you need to recharge your batteries. The topic of mental health is a ‘hot’ global focus, with research validating the importance of brain breaks, going for a walk or just taking time to unwind. This helps your body operate in peak condition in today’s warp-speed society where the to-do lists are long and seemingly never-ending. A change of scenery is the best medicine, even if only for an hour or two. The physical pick me up a change of scenery provides is

invaluable when you return refreshed, clearheaded and ready to tackle your list again. As the year is now totally underway, put yourself at the top of your list and take care of your mental health. When you are in the need of a change of scenery, think outside the box for a place to take refuge and experience some quiet. A place you can spend an afternoon by yourself or with a loved one, just meandering for a stroll or having a cup of tea, or just sitting under a tree on the grass. The drive to Hanmer Springs can be just as calming as you listen to music or a book on tape or just enjoy the quiet of the road.

Peachy Keen

By Melinda Collins

Peach is offering a fresh new take on the seasonal shades of autumn this year, as we eschew the traditional tarnished tones of autumnal gold that make their way into the home to mark the changing of the season.

W

e’re certainly not complaining with this dramatic palette heating things up in the homewares sphere, with a colour scheme that’s more sorbet than saccharine. Named for the pale colour of the flesh of the fruit from which it takes its name, peach works well with aqua, cream or ivory. A little bit retro and a whole lot of cool all wrapped up in one, it can brighten up the starkest of spaces, managing to straddle the divide between elegance and fun. We’re all for it, in fact, we’re peachy keen for the hot new colour of autumn.

Fresh new house plans out now. Our already huge range of house plan designs is growing, meaning you have even more choice. Simply choose a plan and go with it, or use one as a starting point and customise it to suit. The choice is yours. Get inspired at orangehomes.co.nz

Off the hook By Tracey Edwardes

Hooks are the ultimate in form and function – especially the latest range of home hangers gracing our walls.

Get your house

back to level and strengthen your ground

P

lastic and plain makes way for arty hangers of the original kind. From minimalistic to bling, there’s a hook for every look. Singularly or as a rack, they are objects d’art in their own right – looking the part both when in use, or not. Create a feature of single hooks in the same theme. From wooden teardrops to ceramic birds, designers are being creatively cool. Arrange vertically in a narrow gap, as an eye-level horizontal row, or in free-form over the entire wall. Homeware artists are getting hooked on humour. Hang keys upon a perky dogs tail, or on a wall of climbing people. Cool optical illusions, such as dripping paint, are among the quirkier eye-catchers. Painted-metal shapes sit flush

to the wall – from hearts and clouds to simple silhouettes; and rustic reigns for wooden racks come in nature-inspired designs from branches to snow-capped mountain ranges. Children’s rooms crave playful hooks, especially of the animal kind. Hanging up satchels on a brightly painted nose or beak is no chore at all. Classics such as racks of Shaker pegs remain in vogue, and vintage kitchen ceiling hooks are practical saucepan showpieces. Antique styles range from strong multipronged wrought-iron to fine brass filigree. Interesting hooks also make personalised gifts, as there’s always a place to hang one. They create a space solution and a lived-in vibe – it’s all too easy to get hooked!

We’ve helped hundreds of Christchurch homes with level correction and ground strengthening. We offer the safest and quickest re-levelling technologies using methods likened to ‘key hole surgery’.

Shout Out & Praise Up! I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately, as we navigate our way through the first few months of the year. Some of that is directly due to a recent set of experiences and my observations of how individuals perform when they are encouraged and praised. I know there’s nothing earth-shattering in that observation, but there’s definitely something compelling. Praise is defined as: The expression of approval or admiration for someone or something. And here’s the connection: Over the past weekend, I attended an event to support friends who were taking part in a regional sports challenge. Having seen them through their various transitions, I was off to find a spot on one of the backroads where I could wholeheartedly cheer them on. What I got to experience has given me a whole new insight into the value of praise because, on my small corner of the course, I was able to acknowledge and cheer on some 200 athletes. The reaction to a simple sentence of encouragement was profound. To a man (and

woman) many of the competitors picked their pace up, took the time to nod or smile and even (despite the difficulty of that moment in the event) shout out a quick ‘thank you’. All of us felt better for the exchange. It made me wonder how often we hinder each other’s progress by not positively acknowledging good work or offering praise based on a positive action. At this time of the year we are preparing for business planning, one of the most significant and serious parts of our annual calendar. Inevitably, we spend time analysing different aspects of the year, including our strengths, challenges and opportunities. Being in business, the opportunity to berate yourself for missing a target or botching a new process – or interacting without always considering the 100 other agendas – is always on the cards but the simple experience of being praised for the items done well goes a long way. A Stamford professor, Carol Dweck, has spent some 40 years studying the growth mindset and the part praise plays in it. Although her studies captured the responses of children when praised, I think the passage of years doesn’t make too much difference. So, make someone’s day by offering genuine

encouragement and praise. For me, that shout out goes to homeowners, especially those that assist in the transaction process by heeding the recommendations of their property professionals and remaining open to measured, well-considered feedback. Like the cyclists I watched climbing steep hills, I also get to work with some consultants climbing incredible mountains of their own. Here’s to that ascent being praiseworthy and wholehearted whilst they deliver results for their clients.

And, as far as the business planning we have ahead of us goes, another sportsbased analogy comes to mind: Strengthen the core and disrupt the edges. Thank you, Bert.

the community’s ideas. Made possible by a legislative change in 2014, the project allows individuals to own a standalone company with shares, without expensive legal processes. The minimum buy-in for Collett’s Corner is one share, at $100. Any New Zealand resident can invest and the maximum an individual can own is 10 percent. The project was initiated by entrepreneur, developer and international architect Camia Young. Having co-designed the Gap Filler Pallet Pavilion and co-founded XCHC, she creates buildings that build community. “I’m interested in defining the next era of architecture, creating places of connection and belonging. I truly believe it’s possible to create a more equitable society if we work together. “It’s time to turn the tables on how our economic systems work, or don’t work. BESPOKE FURNITURE WITH STYLE

Furniture Dimensions is the place where your design ideas can become a reality.

F

or the past 15 years, the Sydenham workshop and studio has been creating contemporary, custom-made, quality furniture to fit perfectly in your home. In fact, owner and craftsman, Rob Carter is used to regular clients turning up with pages torn from magazines, or their own sketch books, asking him to replicate a piece in their own personalised style. Using a variety of quality wood veneers and high-gloss lacquered finishes, Rob produces everything from sideboards, dining tables, entertainment units and coffee tables, to kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, and built-in wardrobe units. Recent projects have included the installation of a brand-new kitchen into a 125-year-old house and another he designed with the owner’s guidance

before the kitchen was taken out. He also recently made units to feature in a house that went into the House of the Year awards. Rob says he has been in the industry – in some form – all his life, starting out his career as a chair and frame maker. He has since modified the business with his clients in mind, so much so that his Sydenham workshop features an adjacent showroom that allows potential customers to view the finished work firsthand. BEHIND THE OFFICE DOOR

Daryl Hewitt, owner of D J Hewitt Builders, has personally seen to it that building a house with his company is an all-inclusive experience.

D

aryl’s handpicked team are there for clients for every step, “from site selection to moving in with your toothbrush,” Daryl says. “We understand creating homes is about needs and wishes, and we are all about solutions rather than problems.” Backing the top team on site is the cracker team in the office. Craig is Project Manager, while Noel, a qualified technical builder, is the pricing expert and Daryl’s wingman for 19 years. Janet manages all accounts and with four years at D J Hewitt, is able to anticipate requests before they are made. She also makes sure the subtrades and bills get paid on time. Janelle makes everything happen: passing information, timelines and weekly site

photos between the office, building team, trades and clients. The office team is rounded out by Tara, Daryl’s wife, and interior design and fitout guru. Tara assists clients to choose tiles, appliances, plumbing and other fittings and the interior and exterior colour scheme, ensuring all fit within the budget. Daryl says there is a happy environment in the office. It’s a genuine team effort that centres around communication, openness and transparency. The company as a whole like a family and staff turnover is rare: builder Kevin has been on site for Daryl for 23 years. The whole team is very loyal and passionate about work and they get together outside of work too, with the likes of the D J Hewitt basketball team and golf days.

C.

Working with clients right from the beginning, the D J Hewitt team help with site selection and choosing a designer, or will work with the designer you have already chosen. Every part of the process is managed, complete with pricing and monitoring your budget. “Striving to work to budget can be the most stressful part of a build, but I ensure the build fits the budget and the wishlist,” Daryl says. “In fact, they call me the budget police,” he adds. “I keep the design on track but will build it to the client’s budget. It’s not about cutting corners; it’s about adding value, doing things in a clever way. A single line on paper can be the difference between $60k or $100k.” Daryl, Noel and Tara meet with clients and designers often. Behind the scenes they meet the engineer, geotech engineers, and surveyors to ensure those elements stay on budget. Janet ensures all quoting and invoicing is explanatory and transparent, and she also provides forecasting of the expenses ahead. The loyal team of subtrades have worked with Daryl for 20 plus years and work closely with Noel and Daryl to ensure the best value, and the right product, priced correctly. “It’s not a job; we’re passionate about creating homes and delivering dreams – whether it’s a deck or a multi-million dollar hill build.”

Louvred Luxury As the long summer days slowly drift into autumn, rest assured that your outdoor living experience can be extended all year with a Louvre Solutions roof system. Now is the perfect time to have Louvre Solutions create a stylishly comfortable oasis for you and your family.

L

ouvre Solutions’ roof systems are fully customisable with heating, lighting, ventilation, as well as offering integrated pull-down side screens. Each roof comes standard with an integrated rain sensor, which allows the roof to close automatically in the advent of rain. Canterbury-based Louvre Solutions, owned and operated by Craig Rogers, knows how to create the perfect outdoor space. Whether entertaining, relaxing, or simply expanding your indoor area, Louvre Solutions can bring your ultimate outdoor environment to fruition. Louvre Solutions’ louvre systems are manufactured with quality elements, precision engineering and aesthetic options to realise your vision of the ultimate outdoor space. The patio louvre system is strong and conforms to nearly all wind and snow load requirements. The louvres integrate flawlessly into any architectural style. Louvre Solutions manufactures its louvres from extruded

aluminium which offers greater durability than traditional patio covers. Unlike plastic or fabric, these components will outperform in heat and rain. “When we started out, these premium products were prohibitively expensive, reserved for the elite. While the quality of the products has never faltered, we have been able to make them accessible to a wider market and work with a number of clients ranging from entry level properties through to very high-spec homes,” Craig explains. The benefits of a louvre roof are many, ranging from aesthetic to practical. They are a brilliant addition to homes and can be proactively planned as part of the design/build process or can be retrofitted once the need is identified post construction. “Following the earthquakes, there has been a significant shift to subdivisions where there is generally no established exterior cover. Houses are exposed and owners try to manage

environmental conditions and the impact they have on their homes through other means, often with poor results. We collaborated with engineers to come up with the ideal system to mitigate these challenges and a louvre roof proved to be the ultimate solution.” With more than 10 years in the industry, Louvre Solutions’ reputation has been built on a solid foundation. Craig and his team pride themselves on their burgeoning portfolio of repeat and referred business generated through word of mouth, independent builders, architects, landscape architects and building companies. Louvre Solutions manufactures its products at its Canterbury-based factory. A louvre roof can be ready for installation within four to six weeks, making today the perfect time to order yours to ensure maximum extended-summer enjoyment. WOW FACTOR Christchurch home owners can now inject more ‘wow’ factor into their properties with help from Designer Homes.

S

pecialising in textured wall painting and ceiling designs, interior designer Rajesh Thakur takes inspiration from the ornate designs he has seen around the world and is now bringing his creations to life in Canterbury. He is a strong believer that a home should reflect those who live in it and stand out from the crowd, all while offering the service at an affordable price. Whether you need a small job completed,

or have a bigger project in mind, Rajesh and the team can help you think outside the box. As an interior designer, he creates complete ceiling designs, while working with specialists in the craft from Jordan and India. While they’re a popular feature in European, US and Asian countries, he says there’s nothing of its kind yet here in New Zealand.

“We have a very vast range,” explains Rajesh. “We can customise designs, for example, in kids’ rooms we can incorporate mathematics, stars, moons and hearts; we have designs for different ages and different moods.” Now based in New Zealand after years working in the design field in India, Designer Homes has so far completed five homes in Auckland, but Rajesh has chosen to base himself in Christchurch. Because of the local interest, he is now in the process of creating a full show home in Rolleston so people can visit, understand the products on offer and discuss any questions they may have. “We create homes with the ‘wow’ factor... so seeing is believing.” During your own project, Rajesh can guide you through every step of the process, working alongside a passionate team of designers, planners, architects, painters and carpenters. They can assist with everything from floor planning, to remodelling and will meet you onsite for quotes and progress meetings. So, if you’re bored of the standard designs on offer, or want to personalise your home with your own unique taste and flair, give Designer Homes a call today to discuss the many ideas on offer to give your home a brand-new makeover. GettingTrolleyed By Tracey Edwardes

The glamourous but practical vintage drinks trolley is reliving its heyday.

T

he first trolleys were wheeled into Victorian dining rooms for ‘tea total’ refreshments. Then along came the prohibition era, and out came the art deco bar-on-wheels with circular chrome sides and shiny Formica tops. Lightweight drinks trollies were all the rage by the ’50s. Traditionally dramatic in design, they were of shiny brass, glass and beautiful-grained woods upon wheels. Now with a surge in popularity, both circular and rectangular two-tiered drink trolleys are the latest thing – being replicated with functional splashbacks and in an array of designs. With the rise in artisan spirits and liquors, it’s a shame to tuck away the bespoke bottle of gin. Bring out the crystal decanters and martini glasses, add swizzle sticks, serviettes, a silver champagne bucket and a bowl of lemons – and you have an eclectic showpiece for the next party. Cheers!

In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture. Landscaping alternative If trying to maintain a perfectly manicured lawn has been a struggle this summer, maybe the answer lies in a modern synthetic grass product.

G

rassPro has transformed the way we view ‘fake grass’ and is becoming a popular landscaping alternative for gardeners world-wide who want the beauty of a stunning lawn, but none of the care and preparation involved. Christchurch GrassPro operator Tim Gerard specialises in installing the product in smaller areas, such as town houses,

apartments, over 60s units and spaces that are causing a nuisance for the homeowner. The company can supply and install a range of specialist synthetic landscaping grasses to suit your taste, and you might be surprised to know, you even get a choice on the blade thickness, length, texture and shade of green. All grasses are UV stable, include no nasty chemicals or heavy metals,

and are guaranteed for 10 years. GrassPro can also install the product at early childhood centres and day cares, and they work hard to ensure all Health and Safety requirements, and New Zealand regulations are met. As an added bonus for the sports fan, they’ve also combined landscaping grass with a specialist golf putting green grass to create the perfect green for every golfer. GrassPro is a part of the ProGroup, a Kiwi family-owned business providing ‘niche property transformation services’. In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture.

COVER “Truly exceptional” was how this ravishing Redwood home was described by judges awarding Metzger Builders with the 2018 Supreme House of the Year award, praising the “impeccable crafting and attention to detail” of the construction firm and its subcontractors.

he changing demographic of our city is something to celebrate, as we see greater diversity through the number of migrants living and working in Christchurch. We currently have a population of over 316,000 people, projected to grow to over 341,200 in 20 years. As Christchurch becomes an increasingly attractive place to live and work and becomes more widely known as a city of opportunity, we anticipate that more and more people will choose to live and work in Christchurch. Our new overseas arrivals come from many different countries, including the UK and Ireland, and more recently the Philippines, China and India. With our city’s focus evolving from rebuild to rejuvenation, it will be essential that we continue to attract the right skills to enable us to grow our economy. This is exciting news for our city, with greater diversity flowing through to our businesses, schools and communities. When you have a diverse group of people, you’re drawing on a broad range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, all of which add value to our city and region. For businesses, greater diversity encourages more dynamic and creative thinking, better customer understanding, richer brainstorming and overall more balanced decision-making. Global research also shows that companies in the top quartile for diversity are 35 percent more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians – showing that diversity is great for the bottom line too. With our city’s changing demographics, Christchurch is becoming a much more inclusive, diverse community, which is a positive change for the future.

t was a pleasure to announce in early February the transitional use of several Crown-owned properties in Sumner for a new permanent skate park and the creation of a community green space. Sumner residents have long been calling for a permanent skate park and new greenspace and it’s great that we can now make that a reality. Up until recently, there has been a temporary skate park that was run by the local community as part of their communityled earthquake recovery. The Crown has been working closely with local authorities, community groups and individuals to bring life and community back to the residential red zone areas by activating Transitional Land Use (TLU) projects. We’ve granted key red zone land in Sumner as part of an interim arrangement while we finalise the transfer of that from the Crown to the Council. This will create an acoustic buffer for neighbours and create a new gathering spot in the heart of the village. It also means there are some fantastic new community facilities for Sumner. The Community Board recently approved the proposal for a new concrete skate park and Land Information New Zealand, which manages the red zone properties in the Port Hills, has been working closely with the Council’s project team to make this happen. It was exciting to see such positive responses from the local community and I’m looking forward to seeing it get up and running.

R

ecently, our PM talked to Business NZ about 2019’s five budget priorities; three of the five make it clear that nurturing, cultivating and supporting innovation are critical to the future of our country. After all, if we are to ‘transition to a sustainable low emissions economy’, then we will need to replace old practices with innovations that enable sustainability. If we are to lift Maori and Pacific incomes, then we must ensure that those most at risk are not only prepared for the impact of exponential technology but also equipped to lead the change. Finally, if we are to be part of a thriving nation in the digital age, then innovation must be nurtured, cultivated and supported throughout the country. One of Christchurch’s key strengths is our strong pedigree as innovators – our tech sector is the second largest in NZ and our engineering and manufacturing sectors also punch above their weight. But – regardless of our pedigree – it frequently feels like we still lack the confidence that we can achieve great things. It was with this in mind that the MoA team went along to see the UCE EY Summer Startup Programme’s final earlier this month. A long day of worrying over Christchurch’s startup and innovation pipeline was immediately drowned out by every single one of those students who lit up the stage with their intelligence and blistering confidence that their innovation would change the world. They weren’t dreamers. They were proud citizens of Christchurch – the city of innovation, opportunity and exploration.

arly Contractor Involvement (ECI) can show how traditional procurement methods are outdated, and provide real benefits to clients, consultants and contractors. The simplistic concepts of ECI make it hard to understand why this has not already become common practice in New Zealand. However, it does require a paradigm shift in thinking; one based on transparency, open communication and the desire for all parties to create win-win solutions for everyone. It doesn’t seem like rocket science to choose your partners at the beginning of a process when you are developing a large and complex build. The client, the consultants and the contractor will all bring a set of unique and valuable skills to the table and if this can happen from concept stage, the risks associated with budget, time and build scope expectation can all be managed and shared amongst all parties involved. An attitude of ‘best for project’ is essential. ABL Construction is currently involved in projects at design stage that have a ‘one team approach’. Working with the engineers, architects and cost planners in such a solutionfocused manner gives me real confidence that these projects will achieve a level of excellence and success not achieved before. Our client has stated “ECI reduces risk, increases shared responsibility and limits the risk of dispute”. Principal of Marchese Partners, Simon Johnson says, “the refreshing approach of ECI enables an efficient design process from project inception through to construction. Due to the collaborative partnership between client, consultant team and main contractor whereby the original design intent can be realised in budget. It is a refreshing path to success.”

hope you’ve taken the opportunity over summer to walk along the City Promenade which we completed and opened in November. The Promenade is a significant part of Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct but there are three outstanding pieces of work for us to carry out this year to complete this Anchor Project. The first is the Avon Loop, a simple riverside pathway from Kilmore Street to Fitzgerald Avenue that will connect the City Promenade to the future developments in the Residential Red Zone and provide a link to the eastern cycleway. We are currently finalising the proposed design for this pedestrian and cycle path, but it will be different to the Promenade and complement the greenery of the area rather than incorporating the paving that’s better suited to the CBD. The second element is a pedestrian bridge in the North Frame connecting Cambridge and Oxford Terraces. This bridge will give the residents and businesses in the area seamless access to the City Promenade. The final features to complete the Avon River Precinct are the relocation of the ‘Lift’ sculpture to the corner of Kilmore and Madras, and the installation of a new artwork called Mana Motuhake in Victoria Square, to acknowledge the shared history of the area. These elements are not big projects but are important because they will make the Avon River Precinct user-friendly and ensure there is a strong connection between the central city and the future developments along the river to the east.

ike the Arts Centre, the Christchurch Town Hall holds many special memories for people and its re-opening is a significant milestone in the city’s recovery. Completion of the new Spark building, the Aotea Gifts building and Convention Centre are further milestones on the horizon. The activity at the Town Hall from now on will be a significant new element of the city’s regeneration. In just the next couple of months some of the performers taking to the stage include Shapeshifter and the CSO, Marlon Williams, organist Martin Setchell, The Broods, Charley Pride, Norah Jones and The Proclaimers. Each of these varied performances, and the rest, will bring people into the central city – many of whom will start their evening at one of the inner-city bars and restaurants, or head there afterwards. But it is perhaps later in the year, when the Christchurch Schools’ Music festival returns to the Town Hall, that sentimental thoughts will be their strongest. The festival, which is in its 80th year, was held at the Town Hall from the early 1970s until 2010. In early November, across three nights, more than 4,000 young singers from more than 100 schools will come together. Anyone who has had an involvement with the festival in some shape or form over the years will appreciate the significance of its return to Kilmore Street. The Town Hall’s re-opening, like all milestones, is to be celebrated and, on behalf of the Regenerate Christchurch team, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who has been involved.

settings on architectural design. Do you build three double bedrooms, a double garage, walk in robes, ensuites and sculleries to protect resale value when there is now just the two of you at home? Do the kids get a double room and bathroom each? If we follow the contemporary patterns, the house size is large and the goals start to become unattainable and can rob you of the opportunity for a bit of architectural excitement. A good architectural designer will sensitively record and follow your brief. And that is just it; it is your brief. You have the most power at that early stage to influence the project and cost by what you ask for. With this in mind I challenge my clients to really prioritise their wish list. If it is a well written brief, it will beautifully reflect their desired day to day lifestyle rather than prescribe a number and size of rooms. Describing a lifestyle leaves room for creativity. If you get it right, that covered outdoor living area where you actually want to spend most of your time living, won’t be cut in the cost savings because it has a higher value than a walk-in wardrobe.

MakingWaves Acoustic Architecture is leading the way in the design of functional, yet visually stunning bespoke acoustic treatment solutions.

B

y merging the lines between art and technology, founder Peter Williams creates high-end, quality pieces that serve a purpose. Having designed and built more than 50 houses, Peter walked away from a successful business 10 years ago due to a change in family circumstances that required him to work from home. A lifelong interest in music and acoustics led him to build one of Christchurch’s few professional recording studios, Riverside Sound. Conversations with the designers of some of Europe’s finest studios resulted in Riverside Sound being rated by many of Peter’s clients as the best sounding space they’d ever recorded in. Continual requests for advice and assistance with soundproofing and acoustic treatment for other recording spaces led to the formation of Acoustic Architecture. Now those in the know not only seek out his curved creations as artwork, they look to his Scandinavianinspired, Birch plywood Wave Walls, Wave panels, Wave ceilings and Wave Room dividers because of their ability to control reverberation and noisy environments. Even though the Waves look like they could appear in a designer homeware store, there’s plenty of science wrapped up in their elegant lines.

“Our range of Wave products diffuse noise that comes into contact with them as well as having a very high sound absorption rating,” Peter explains. “The curved acoustic wall panels reduce the effect of sound and reverberation over a much larger frequency range than conventional flat panels. We also work with an artist and have our own photographer, who provides amazing images which are printed onto a range of 100 percent recyclable acoustic panels.” On the other hand, soundproofing is about constructing a wall or ceiling to reduce the amount of sound passing through that element from the neighbouring room. A major client has required consulting, design and testing services for 20 hearing clinics during the last five years. This has also included the supply of acoustic panels and soundproof testing booths. The team at Acoustic Architecture designs, creates prototypes, tests and manufactures all of its products at the factory here in Christchurch. If you own a café or bar requiring a noise management solution, are undertaking a commercial fit-out, designing any style of new build, or just want a sensational piece of art to add style to your home or office, contact Peter to arrange a viewing at their show home. www.acousticarchitecture.co.nz

n hand to walk through the details with me will be a mortgage broker, a lawyer and a rep from a new home building company. They will explain how under the KiwiSaver first home withdrawal scheme you may be able to put some of your KiwiSaver savings towards a first home and under the Housing New Zealand Home Start grant you may be able to get a grant towards your first home. You must have been a KiwiSaver member for three or more years and can only withdraw money for your first home – not an investment property. I have an actual scenario to talk about of a couple I recently helped into a new home through the scheme. It was immensely satisfying to see them realise their dreams of ownership. The reality is that people could own their first home for a weekly mortgage that is less than they are paying in rent. The free one-hour seminar is on Tuesday 5 March from 6pm to 7pm in the auction rooms of Harcourts Gold at 471 Papanui Road. It’s limited to 50 people, so to register go to Harcourts Gold’s Facebook page, phone 021 339 078 or email mark.oloughlin@harcourts.co.nz.

build MAGGIE COPP IN HER GARDEN

I Creating a haven For 45 years, the Kenneth F. Weaver Trust has been providing secure, comfortable accommodation for Christchurch pensioners.

n 1973, Kenneth Weaver saw a need and set about filling it. The need was for quality living facilities for those elderly singles and couples who genuinely could not afford it. Plans were developed and 14 units were built in Abberley Crescent, St Albans. At that time, the rent for a single pensioner was $11.75 per week! Now the trust owns 29 units in four locations in St Albans and Edgeware. Each of the units – 25 single-bedroom, and four two-bedroom – are secure, cosy and comfortable. They are exclusively for the elderly, 60+ only and provide the peace of mind that tenants have a home for life. Other criteria to qualify are a genuine housing need and having limited assets. Another requirement of tenants is that they maintain their area of garden. Each of the units has gardens and grassed areas to rival any public garden space. Some of it is maintained by the trust. “Some of the tenants take an active interest in the gardens,” Kenneth says with a smile. “Some not so active.” One very active, avid gardener is Maggie Copp. A tenant of the trust for the last eight years, Maggie has transformed her little corner of the property. Now, she has a very productive vegetable patch, dozens of swan plants

and as many or more cocoons, and a beautifully manicured, colourful garden outside her window. “I do a lot of cuttings,” she says. “Quite a few of the roses are cuttings. I’ve always been a keen gardener.” Her efforts were acknowledged with a 2017 Community Pride Garden Award from the Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board. The award was for her “personal contribution towards maintaining Christchurch as the Garden City”. More than a garden, however, Maggie has, in the trust, found a haven. She emphasises that. “The trust is wonderful. The rent is amazing, the situation is fabulous. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I’ve found a haven.” The Kenneth F. Weaver Trust has created a haven for many elderly Cantabrians over the last five decades. Kenneth wants to promote the trust even more. “The public in general doesn’t know this service is available,” he says. The next generation of Weavers are at the helm of the trust now. Kenneth’s daughter Karen and son Craig, are ensuring the trust is well placed to continue serving their tenants long into the future. There is plenty of off street parking, and the same friendly faces of Greg’s team will be there. “I want to give a shout out of thanks to my staff and customers,” Greg says. “They’ve put up with the inconvenience and some trying times.” He’s very grateful and looking forward to the next chapter for his business, and to serving the Rangiora community more effectively. “It’s exciting,” says Sue Cable. “It’s good for the town and the wider Waimakariri community.”

building out front.” Rangiora builder Colin O’Neill, whose building company had constructed the current Durham Health building, was brought in to build the new premises into which Durham Health will expand its services, and Rangiora Pharmacy will reside. Robin Wright, of R W Design, a well-respected North Canterbury architectural firm, conceived the building plan, and construction is now very close to being completed. The opening of the new building, projected to be early March, will be of great benefit to the community. It will bring together additional services, including Pacific Radiology, to the pharmacy and existing services. Its X-ray and ultrasound will greatly improve midwife services. Active Health physiotherapy, podiatry, and sports medicine services will expand to full time there, and Family Planning will also have a new presence.

SCHOOL REBUILD REFLECTS COMMUNITY

Eight years since Redcliffs Primary School relocated to ‘temporary’ premises in neighbouring Sumner, the community is eagerly anticipating its return home.

A

ctivities are now ramping up on the school’s new site with project team Naylor Love Canterbury moving in heavy machinery and beginning foundation work. Naylor Love Canterbury has supported the school throughout by communicating its vision and attending community evenings. Redcliffs School principal Rose McInerney says that soon the challenges overcome since the earthquakes will become distant memories as the school moves into

its purpose-built home, which will truly reflect the history and pride of its community. “During our campaign to keep Redcliffs School open, we were struck by the strength of this community,” she says. “It’s been important to the design team to incorporate much of what makes Redcliffs special. We involved the children and there were lots of amazing dreams about what they wanted – including a hydroslide into the sea – but in essence, they wanted a fantastic community school where they could best collaborate and learn. “Everybody involved in this project, from architects to project managers, shares our vision. We worked closely with local iwi to ensure our school will embrace its surroundings and honour the turangawaewae of this special location looking out to the Ihutai (estuary).” Although the last eight years have been difficult, Rose says the children have taken it all in their stride. “Our tamariki have learnt about determination, patience, fortitude, and resilience first-hand from their whanau, teachers and school community. What a delight it’s going to be to welcome them, and our whole community, into this wonderful new environment.”
